Voter Engagement 2012 campaign

Asian Americans Vote is regarded as one of the most important factors in the US Presidential Election this year. APIAVote, a national nonpartisan organization, partnered with Asian American Federation of Florida this year to educate and mobilize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in electoral and civic participation in Florida. Many Asian community events were planned by the AAFF’s member organizations in the Northeast, Central and South Florida starting late September. Voting postcards, palm cards, and T-shirts were made to promote the engagement. AAFF also utilized the Asian ethnic media to reach out to the untapped voters. 51% of Asians surveyed in 2012 get their news from ethnic in-language media with another 12% getting news from ethnic English media. Presidential campaigns, statewide candidates and parties have yet to invest in any significant ad-buys in Asian ethnic media even in swing states where the Asian vote could serve to be pivotal. Another method of voter contact is to mail translated information to voters. Three out of four AAPIs speak a language other than English at home. Based on the 2012 Asian American Voter Survey, one-fifth of respondents said that they would more likely vote if given in-language assistance. Yet candidates and campaigns have been slow to realize that multi-cultural and multi-lingual outreach, when done properly, can prove to be the winning difference when the margin between two candidates are tight.

Bridging the Gap in the Asian American Family, Part 2

What Asian Parents Wish Their Children Could Understand  By Evelyn Eng

Asian parents are far from perfect. Although many of us want respect as parents, we realize there is no parenting manual that gives us all the answers to know how to raise our American born children and deal wisely with all the situations we will encounter as a family here. Please be patient with us as we try our best to raise you in this country that values independence and freedom, a concept that is foreign to the authoritarian way in which we were brought up. You love thinking for yourself and questioning us, but we were taught not to question our parents, show our feelings or even disagree. We willingly obeyed our parents even when we disagreed.

ing pot we call America. I came here to provide a better life for you. I’ve made sacrifices, but life here is good. However, I will never fully assimilate here. You are born here, so you are a true American. I don’t understand some of the ways of the West. I would like to understand, but I don’t want to fully assimilate, nor do I wish for you to be so comfortable here that you lose your cultural heritage. I have brought you up in this country but want you to embrace your Asian heritage as well. I do

We don’t always know best, but we are doing the best we can. Help us to understand how to be better parents, not by being rebellious, but by simple, respectful communication. We love you, and although we may not hug and kiss you the way Westerners do with their children, we would give our lives for you (as Jesus did for us). By God’s grace, we are able to become parents who honor God.

3) Do not question my authority. I know that God placed me over you as your guardian, and even though you are growing older, I am a bit more experienced and wiser. I have reasons why that you may or may not understand. Do not choose to do things just because your peers give you advice to do so.

In the meantime, please understand how much I love you – I show it in different ways than American culture. And to quote you, “it’s not wrong, it’s just different.”

not expect you to be perfect, but I do desire you to be a multi-cultural Christian child. This means you are “set apart” in several ways. To be holy for God and to be a model of our culture to this American society. It is a high calling, but it is one I also face on a daily basis.

6) You are my legacy; please make me proud of you as best as you are able.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun or be silly sometimes. But, we also ask you to be serious about life and academics. I realize it isn’t easy for you to grow up here and not be “truly American.” But the uniqueness of your situation is true of many Americans – this is a land of a melting pot of many cultures – embrace who you are and who we are.

Like you, I am learning how to live in this melt-

Please understand my adherence to strict

4) Do as I say, not as I do. I am not perfect, but I want you to strive to be. 5) Am I really a Tiger parent? I would like not to be, but Asian ways die hard.

My parents never let me speak back to them. The fact that we have conversations, although they may be arguments, means already I have come a long way. I want to be a good parent, but my definition may not be yours. Please be patient with me – the manual for good parenting is not easy to find. American parenting and Asian parenting are different. I am trying to navigate my way in this foreign culture. I know it is not easy for our family as we strive to find the right balance between these two cultures. I am proud of you. Please know that. It is not easy to speak in a complimentary tone to show my pride implying arrogance… I was not taught that way. Love, feelings, pride – these are things that parents do not show. It is the way I was raised. I may be able to change, but it will take a long time.

1) Even though I don’t say “I love you,” I show it by providing everything for you, giving you gifts and making sure your financial future is secure by pushing you academically. 2) Even though I can’t say “I’m sorry,” I am – please don’t ask me to say what it is hard to say.

rules about academics is to give you a more comfortable life in the long run. Hard work will not hurt you.

Deuteronomy 6:2“so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.” Colossians 3:20 “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.” (New International Version) Evelyn Eng is an American born Christian Asian with adult children. She is in a unique position to share about Asian American children (parents) and what they wish their parents (children) could understand. She blogs at christianasianmom.wordpress.com. You may share your thoughts there or email her at christianasianmom(at)gmail(dot)com. This is a collection of opinions from A sian American children, youth and young adults, not necessarily the personal views of the author from her own childhood.

Eleven performing groups representing China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam, three audience participating workshops and eight exhibitors made up a 4-hour Asian Cultural EXPO on October 20th at Orlando “Walgreen’s Strategy is to help people Get Well, Stay Well and Live Well”. Dragon Boat certainly accomplishes all of these. Bring people of all ages together to work in harmony on the boat is good for body, mind a soul. There is no doubt that the ancient Asian Culture understood this when they created this sport and the Dragon Boat Festival at Disney helps bring it alive today. This event continues to grow every year as more and more people are exposed to the benefits. This is the kind of event we want our community to be known for and is great for total health” said Marlin Hutchens, Market Vice President at Walgreens. The event, organized by Great White North and sponsored by Walgreens, attracted 76 teams from local corporations, around the state of Florida and East Coast. A first time

AACC and IACC Joint Chamber Business After Hours

By C.K. Lau

 By Gail Rayos

Dozens of professionals from the Asian American Chamber of Commerce and the Indian-American Chamber of Commerce gathered October 11 for a Joint Chamber Business After Hours to network, swap stories and enjoy some delicious Indian food. Kannan Srinivasan, President and Chief Project Officer at Global KTech Inc, who is on the board of directors of the Asian American Cham-

ber of Commerce was instrumental in bringing the two Chambers together. “The Asian Chamber has been looking for the right time all year to do an event with our fellow Indian-American Chamber to bring our members together to network and cross promote business,” said Kannan. “October was the perfect time and this was a great opportunity to kick off a festive fall season packed with galas and many

other events for both groups.” The setting was the banquet room of Aroma Indian Cuisine on West Lake Mary Boulevard in Lake Mary. Earlier this year, the restaurant was a featured food sponsor at the Asian Pacific Heritage Month of May signature AACC event held each May at Orlando City Hall.

KTech, and Moss, Krusick, and Associates. Besides the sponsoring organizations, the Indian American Chamber of Commerce board of director leaders Beena Parikh, Tino Patel, Varesh Patel and Shobana Daniell took the lead in organizing the program and welcoming AACC members. “Every year we participate in Tri-Chamber events with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Orlando and the African American Chamber,”

said AACC President Gail Rayos. ”As the oldest organization among Central Florida’s various Asian American communities, events like the October BAH with the Indian-American Chamber are just as important.” “The Asian Chamber mission calls for our organization to act as a gateway and bridge between other chambers and business agencies and our local Asian and Asian American entities,” she said.

Did you know? According to the U.S Census, Asians make up Approximately 4 percent of the total city of Orlando population. The dominant groups include: Asian Indian 0.9 % Chinese 0.6 % Filipino 0.7 % Japanese 0.1 % Korean 0.3 % Vietnamese 0.7 %

Asia Trend Magazine would like to congratulate this year’s recipients of Asian American Chamber of Commerce 2012 Golden Dragon Awards to recognize the outstanding leadership, initiative and contributions to Central Florida. Orlando Health (Golden Dragon Award), REACH of Central Florida (Ellison Onizuka Humanitarian Award), Universal Orlando Resort (Diversity Champion), University of Central Florida (Green Spirit Award), SunTrust CEO David Fuller (Golden Hands Award), Wendy Chioji (Inspiration Award) and to the late Gary Sain of Visit Orlando, a special Legacy Award. The complete details of the event with excellent performances will be featured in the upcoming December issue. Congratulations to AACC for another inspiring night. The Vietnamese American Student Association at UCF presents their annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival also known as Tết Trung Thu. As second generation Vietnamese Americans, they are proud to highlight their culture and strive to keep their traditions alive. This event like many others they host, serves as a celebration of their heritage.

What is Tết Trung Thu? Tết Trung Thu, as it is known in Vietnam, or the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival as we refer to it in America, is a wonderful, ancient festival that revolves around children.

26

NOV 2012

asiatrendmagazine.com

It is said that originally, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival came about as a way for parents to make up for lost time with their children after harvest season. The harvest was done by September, (August in the Lunar calendar) and the parents were anxious to spend time with their children and do something special with them, as well as celebrate the harvest, after spending much time working hard and away from the family. It was held under the full moon, which represents fullness and prosperity of life. Tết Trung Thu is very much like a combina-

tion of our Halloween and Thanksgiving. Children parade on the streets, while singing and carrying colorful lanterns of different sizes. Some of the popular shapes include fishes, stars, butterflies and a lantern that spins when a candle is inserted, representing the earth circling the sun. Today, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, as well as encouraging affection for children, promotes education, poetry, dance and arts and crafts. Hansharo Beer “Daiginjo Masako” and “Yoritomo” ~ Local specialty beer in Izu ~

伊豆-反射炉ビヤ 「大吟醸政子」「頼朝」ビール  By Teri Mitchell place is now called Odaiba. The furnace towers are still there, as a peculiar tourist attraction. This later became the site of KurayaNarusawa, a sake brewery. In recent years, a beer brewery has also been operating. Daiginjo Masako, a light, golden ale that is an original of sorts made with sake yeast and Yoritomo, a dark beer made with several varieties of roasted malt. KurayaNarusawa, the brewer of Hansharo Beer, is located in the City of Izu no Kuni on Izu Peninsula, whose outdoor activities are countless. Izu is widely known for “Onsen” (hot springs) and good seafood on the ocean side. If you have a chance to explore Izu, do not miss your chance to visit this cute brewery! (Photos from www.kuraya-narusawa.com)

There was a Shogun called Minamoto no Yoritomo 源頼朝 and his wife Masako 政子 in the 12th century. Yoritomo established the Kamakura Bakufu (Shogunate) 鎌倉幕府 in Kamakura (in Kanagawa Prefecture) in 1192.That was the early age of Samurai rule. The political context and historical background caused Yoritomo to spend his childhood in Izu no Kuni where Masako was from, and they were destined to meet….. Reflected from this episode, KurayaNarusawa 蔵屋鳴沢 which is known for Hansharo Beer 反射炉ビヤ in the City of Izunokuni 伊豆の国市 (in Shizuoka Prefecture) is producing “Daiginjo Masako” and “Yoritomo” Beer. Hansharo Beer was named after the iron furnaces where huge cannons were forged in the mid-1800s. The cannons were shipped to a spot on Tokyo Bay where they were mounted to blast away at unwanted ships. That

One of the main objectives of the Asian Coalition is to increase the awareness and appreciation of the diverse Asian culture and heritage among local public through cultural performances, demonstrations, and information booths. Hosting Experience Asia Festival annually allows us to achieve this objective. In addition to the cultural benefits, the Festival also featured well over 80 small-business vendors of food, arts, crafts, jewelry, clothing, business ser-

This year’s Festival turned out to be another impeccable event. The early October climate was perfect. BLIA-YAD-Orlando is the Young Adult Division subchapter of Buddha’s Light International Association from Guang Ming Temple in Orlando. Their goals are to reach out and address the needs of the community at large, to develop leadership ability among their members, and to strive to enhance the value of life based on the principals of their Buddhist faith.

Over the course of two weeks, the members of BLIA-YAD Orlando asked Guang Ming Temple members for donations, and they received an overwhelming response. Everything from spiral notebooks and copy paper to erasers and markers came pouring in, and they were quite pleased with the amount of generosity shown.

Cheney Elementary principal, Tracey Gibson, was on hand to accept the donations on Tuesday, and she expressed her gratitude for the greatly

The group plans to continue their efforts to support many worthwhile causes both locally and worldwide.
