Victor Alzona

On Oct 1, World Smile Day, the Orlando/ Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau made a new World Record for the Largest Smiley Face with 500 people. Visitors from Brazil, the U.K., Canada, and Germany came to make a new world record along with local residence and Orlando Celebrity Smile Ambassadors Melissa Rycroft and Joey Fatone. Mainlanders Gold Splurge in H.K. In China, Golden Week refers to the two 7-day national holidays the Chinese celebrate every year. The first one is the Chinese Lunar New Year which takes places either in January or February. The second is the National Day Golden Week that starts sometime during the first week of October. There used to be a third Golden Week, which is the Labour Day Golden Week during the 1st of May; however, it ceased to celebrate since 2007. In 1999 alone, it was reported that around 28 million Chinese took a trip during the first week of the National Day celebration. In 2007, the figure increased to 120 million. Mainland families are forking out lots of money for shopping during their National Day golden week holiday in Hong Kong. Tourist family plans to spend US$3,000 to $12,000 during their three-day stay in the city. Among 760,000 mainland tourists expected for the golden week until Friday - up 30 percent over the same period last year, according

to the Hong Kong Tourism Board. The World Trade Centre in Causeway Bay estimated a 27 percent increase in business to US$2.13 million and forecast a 22 percent rise in the number of shoppers to 550,000. A group of 40 mainland women spent more than US$38,000 there on Friday, the mall said. A spokeswoman said luxury evening clothes shop G & An’ge expected a 30 percent hike in sales. Mainland shoppers spend an average of US$1,300 per person, twice as much as last year, she added. One tourist Yi, 38, had already spent over US$38,000 on cosmetics and clothes for his wife and sportswear for his 12-year-old son in Tsim Sha Tsui Sogo yesterday. The family then went to Harbour City to buy a digital camera worth US$775. “To me, shopping in Hong Kong means high quality, good service and low prices. And I can purchase some products which I cannot buy in the mainland,” Yi said.

He bought two pairs of sports shoes for his son, including a limited-edition brand launched on Friday and costing US$150. “We had to line up outside the shop for about half an hour to buy the special gift for my son,” he said. The family of three arrived from Inner Mongolia on Thursday and will leave on Wednesday. Yi, who owns a milk business and comes here for shopping at least twice a year, said: “Thanks to the strong yuan, the price of the same product in Hong Kong has become much lower.” asiatrendmagazine.com Oct 2010

Bruce Wang:

Making a Difference One Brick at a Time

 By Jodi Kiely

It all started with a community need – and art. Bruce Wang, an Orlando native, was at the time living and working in New York when he volunteered to greet guests and secure the art for an art auction benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The call for volunteers had been put out through One Brick, a volunteer-run organization that compiles local nonprofit events and lists them on an online calendar for volunteers to access and choose which activities they wish help with. The One Brick model touts itself as a convenient way for people to make a difference – “volunteering made easy” as its website claims. Originating in San Francisco, One Brick has spread to seven other cities, including Orlando. In fact, it is Wang who brought the volunteer corps to Central Florida. “I decided to bring One Brick to Orlando after moving back from New York. I had not volunteered in some time and really wanted to get involved again here in Florida,” he said. But according to Wang, he didn’t want to go through the traditional volunteer route of long term commitments, background checks and orientations since his schedule was already busy enough as it was. So instead of doing nothing at all, he decided to do something about his predicament. “Because I loved the culture and method of One Brick based off my experience volunteering with them in New York, I called the executive director, Clive Charlwood, and pitched him the idea of bringing it to Orlando,” he said. After checking Wang’s references with One Brick New York, Charlwood gave Wang the green light and a series of motions were set in place to get the chapter up and running in Central Florida. “Once we established what we wanted to do, I reached out to my personal network and built a team,” Wang said. Together with One Brick Orlando’s cofounder Joel Montilla, Wang hosted small, unofficial volunteer events which were promoted through Facebook. The team then brought on a third leg, Keith Miller, as their events leader and officially launched One Brick Orlando six months later, attracting more than 100 people and making Orlando the fastest launching chapter nationally. “We attribute our fast success to our focus on the

10 Oct 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com

people, our volunteers,” Wang said. As director of the Orlando chapter, Wang is in charge of communicating the group’s vision to others, training and recruiting volunteers, finding and promoting volunteer events and marketing and branding One Brick Orlando within the community. He also sets the organization’s goals and builds relationships with volunteers and area non-profits – all as an unpaid volunteer himself. When he’s not leading One Brick Orlando, the 24-year old works as a social entrepreneur, spearheading the company Group Table which creates collaborative, web-based software designed to help businesses and organizations improve document management, project planning, and communication. (http://www.grouptable.com/) He also runs the marketing and sales for his family’s woodworking tools manufacturing business, Micro Jig. [http://www.microjig.com/] Aside from all this, Wang still finds time to serve on the board of the Chinese American Association in Florida, acting as the youngest board member in the organization’s history. While work keeps the University of Central Florida alum busy, it obviously doesn’t keep him from making a difference in his community. “My hope for the future of One Brick Orlando is to have it be the largest contributor of volunteer hours in the One Brick network,” Wang said. “San Francisco currently contributes 60,000 hours a year, and I’d like for Orlando to beat that.” Wang admits that the rewards he has reaped from volunteering have gone beyond simply making a difference in others’ lives; volunteering has made a difference in his own life as well. In particular, his volunteer work has helped him see where he is going as a Central Floridian and as an Asian-American. Wang said his advice to young Asian-Americans inspired by his community leadership is for them to incorporate diversity into their lives and to appreciate the power of working with, befriending, and engaging people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. “Your mind is like a parachute,” he says, quoting a fortune cookie. “It works best when it’s open.” To learn more about One Brick Orlando, visit http://orlando.onebrick.org/

What is Filipino Food? I am constantly asked about Filipino food. What is it? How is it different from other Asian cuisines? Why aren’t there any Filipino restaurants around? Having spent my childhood in the Philippines you would think that these questions could be easily answered. They can be, but I want to go more in depth with my responses.

Okoy

Lumpia

BRIEF DESCRIPTION Filipino food is perhaps one of the least known Southeast Asian cuisines. There are some dishes that people are more familiar with such as Lumpia, Pancit and Adobo but these dishes have no one true version as the taste and preparation can differ regionally. Filipino dishes lack the one binding recipe that defines a particular dish as Filipino. This maybe one of the mysteries and intrigues of Filipino cuisines. Many Filipino cuisines are made with pork, chicken or fish. Sometimes these meats are used sparingly to add flavor to a variety of vegetables. In addition, most dishes are served with sauces, whether with the dish or as a dipping sauce. We love our sauces especially drizzled on top of rice. If you think about it, it’s no different to having mashed potatoes with gravy or even pasta with sauce. Regardless of what dish you are eating the serving is always the same – rice, a main dish or two and some sort of sauce or dipping sauce.

Callos

Pork Singang

HISTORY Philippine cuisine is an exotic blend of various cultural influences. Historically, Filipinos are a mix of Chinese, Malay and Spanish. The Chinese influence dates back in the 1400s when traders settled starting in the coastal areas then eventually more inland. Their culinary influences can be seen in dishes such as Pancit, Lumpia and Siopao. With the Spanish discovery of the Philippines and their 300 year occupation, we came to know dishes such as Paella, Menudo and Callos. The Malay influence comes from the various dishes made of rich sauces with ingredients such as coconut and peanut which are evident in dishes such as Kare-Kare and Bicol Express. WHERE ARE THE FILIPINO RESTAURANTS? Most Filipino restaurants found here in the US are outfitted as Turo-Turo style eateries, akin to what you will find at food courts. In places like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu they are not hard to find. However they are a lot harder to find in the South but fortunately we have a few located in the Jacksonville, Orlando and St. Petersburg/Clearwater areas. Dishes that you will find in these places typically include street type foods such as Ukoy and Pork BBQ, and more popular dishes such as Kare-Kare, Sinigang, Adobo, Menudo and more. If you have not tried Filipino food, check out your local area and see if there is a restaurant near you. Or if you feel like cooking a Filipino dish, check out my blog at www.saraplicious.com See you next month!

Japanese Puppet Troupe Featured at Heart Of Florida Asian Festival The Bunraku Bay Puppet Troupe from the University of Missouri has been added to the roster of featured performers at the Heart of Florida Asian Festival, held on 10/23 and 10/24 at the Thomas Center in Gainesville. Bunraku Bay joins SinoElite Acrobats, Gator Bhangra, and Liang as headliners at the festival, which is in its second year. The troupe, under the direction of Martin Holman, will perform the traditional Japanese puppet theatre that dates back to 1684. Festival director David Ballard said, “In Japan, puppetry was the major form of theatre, drawing all of the best writers, actors, and musicians. It is considered to be one of the most sophisticated puppetry styles in the world and it is particularly suited for inclusion in the Heart of Florida Asian Festival.” The Bunraku Bay Troupe will perform two selections. Kotobuki Shisi Sanbaso is a celebratory piece of welcome and purification. Sanbaso is the regular opener for all Bunraku Bay performances. The troupe will also perform a lion dance, which is one of the newest additions to the troupe’s repertoire. The lion dance is said to bring good luck

to the audience. Most of the troupe’s repertoire is from the Edo Period in Japan. Mr. Holman was the first non-Japanese to train and perform in traditional puppet theatre in Japan. He founded the group in 2004 and since that time members of the troupe have spent summers training with the Imada Puppet Troupe in Iida in the Nagano Prefecture. Rounding out the entertainment roster is Pol Parsley, the Thai Elvis. Parsley played to a packed house at last year’s festival and he and his band return to rock the Thomas Center with The King’s hits, including “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and “Love Me Tender.” Also joining the festival is the Gainesville Koi Club, who will exhibit the ornamental fish on the Thomas Center grounds. The Club plans to install a large tank on the premises and to educate festivalgoers about the hobby, including the selection and care of fish and the proper maintenance of ponds.

 By Asia Trend

Mr. Ballard said. This year’s vendors are Maui Teriyaki, the Loving Hut, Thai-American Food, Vongsay Enterprises, Victoria Sweets, Sweet Dreams Ice Cream, and Radhika’s Café. Festivalgoers will choose from a selection of foods ranging from vegetarian Indian to authentic Asian curries and durian ice cream. Five of the vendors are first-time participants. The event serves as an introduction to the Gainesville community for the Loving Hut, a national chain that plans to open a storefront in Gainesville in the near future. Radhika’s Café recently opened in Alachua and Maui Teriyaki has three local outlets. The Heart of Florida Asian Festival is a weekend event this year. Guests who pay for admission on Saturday will be able to return on Sunday with no additional charge. Tickets are five dollars and kids 12 and under are free. For more information, contact the City of Gainesville at 352393-8746. The Heart of Florida Asian Festival is produced by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.

Asia Trend Magazine presents

Orange County Mayoral Race 2011:

Interview with Candidates Bill Segal and Teresa Jacobs

 By Ricky Ly

On Tuesday November 2, 2010, Orange County citizens will vote on the new County Mayor to replace Mayor Richard Crotty as the head of the Board of County Commissioners. Two well-qualified candidates are up for election and we had the distinguished privilege to interview both Bill Segal and Teresa Jacobs to get their viewpoints and background and to better understand how they will shape the future of our region as Orange County Mayor. Asia Trend: What inspired you to get involved in public service? Bill Segal: I love Orange County and want to ensure it remains the sort of place that our kids and grandkids want to return to and stay. That means more high-wage jobs and great, safe

16 Oct 2010 asiatrendmagazine.com

neighborhoods. I have 36 years of experience in creating and running successful businesses. I have managed huge budgets and hundreds of people. I am a proven job creator. Too often, people from the world of business shy away from elected office. My father modeled the vital principle of our responsibility to give back to the community. My background of both business and volunteer work has provided me with the skills needed to bring new high-wage jobs to this community, support small businesses already here and help create great, safe neighborhoods. Teresa Jacobs: The catalyst that ultimately led me to run for the County Commission was a proposed road that would disrupt multiple neighborhoods and split my neighborhood in two.

I helped organize hundreds of people, got multiple HOAs working together, and raised private dollars for an independent study. I found ways to save taxpayers literally millions of dollars by using a different alignment, one that enjoyed the support of nearly all the affected neighborhoods. In the end, I lost that fight and was disappointed by what I considered to be a lack of respect for the public’s input by most of the commissioners. I vowed to change that process – and the best way to do that was to be part of the process. I was soon elected President of the Orange County Homeowners Association Alliance (an umbrella organization that represented approximately 100 neighborhoods), then elected and re-elected to the County Commission.

專訪

AT: If you are elected, what are your main goals to achieve during your time as Orange County mayor? TJ: Of the many issues facing Orange County, obviously the most pressing is the economy and unemployment. That’s why my top priority will be to make sure Orange County is part of the economic solution, not part of the problem. To that end, I’ve proposed a tax abatement plan for targeted industries that create good jobs. I will also streamline the permit approval process and ensure an affordable tax structure. Additionally, I will address budgetary issues, making sure Orange County spends each tax dollar it collects effectively and accountably. Second, I will change the culture of Orange County Government. I will make sure that Orange County Government treats all citizens and all businesses fairly. It will be a highly professional and ethical place to work. Third, I will continue my efforts as a county commissioner to create a culture and environment where citizen input is not only permitted, but is actively solicited. To transform this community into an exciting and vibrant place to live, Orange County’s citizens must know that their voices are being heard and that their opinions do matter. Finally, I will continue to push for ethics and accountability in government, and work to protect our quality of life by creating safer neighborhoods and by helping to create better schools. BS: I believe the first job of the next Mayor is to bring new jobs to new jobs here. I tapped top local small business and labor leaders to craft a 27-point jobs plan. I think it will help businesses create new jobs right away. I have a plan to cut property taxes and a way to pay for the cut. I would do that by changing the way we deliver health care to county employees. A similar plan in the City of Ocoee saved them $1 million. I think it could save Orange County $10 million a year. AT: What do you feel is your most significant or greatestachievement? BS: When the County Commission was considering approval of the new Amway Events

Center, the discussions reached an impasse. I came up with an innovative solution. The Magic agreed to pay for the construction of five community centers across Orange County. Today families are starting to use these facilities. I think one of my strongest traits is my ability to build consensus. In this case, the consensus building resulted in these incredible community facilities. TJ: Building trust and soliciting community involvement in the important decisions facing our community and our local government. AT: With the rise of China as the second biggest economy and the increasing globalization of the world, in what ways do you see Orange County moving forward to be a global player on the world stage? TJ: Orange County has the opportunity to take the lead globally with our technology and specialized industries. We excel at simulation, modeling, and high tech training in many areas, including the military, medical, and education professions. Our new medical city is state-of-the-art and should be a magnet to many more medicallyrelated industries and research programs. We also are one of the top vacation/tourism destinations in the world. We need to be recognized as the global leader in these areas and recruit and attract more high-tech industries(with their highpaying jobs) to our area. Finally, with one of the world’s best airports, we need to expand international flights and encourage international travel and business ventures. Bringing more foreign tourists to Orlando will help expand our reputation as a global leader in the tourism industry and, at the same time, hopefully increase our tourism revenues. BS: We have great assets in Orange County. We have the third largest university in the country, a world-class airport, which is a magnet for business; we have our new medical city and existing convention center. These are the elements of a player on the world stage. Orange County needs a leader who can tell our story to the world. I think my 36 years of creating and running successful businesses has taught me how to speak the language of business. That makes me the most

Interview

qualified to tell that story and turn opportunities into enterprise. AT: What is your favorite place to eat at in Orange County? BS: I am a fan of many of our fine restaurants. I love to eat spicy Indian dishes like lamb vindaloo and Rogan Josh. TJ: Amura Sushi Bar. AT: What is your favorite Asian film of all time and why? TJ: Ran. Kurosawa’s masterpiece combines a powerful story with classic themes of power, love and betrayal with stunning and beautiful visual artistry. BS: I loved the film, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” I guess I’m not alone, since that film won an Oscar for “Best Picture.” AT: If you could describe yourself in three words, what would those words be? BS: Businessperson, volunteer, humorous. TJ: Passionate, Caring, Thorough. AT: How would someone get involved in your campaign? TJ: We are always looking for volunteers! They can contact my office at 407-480-9676, email me at info@teresaformayor.com, or log on to my website at www.teresaformayor.com and sign up to volunteer. Between Ignorance And Enlightenment

Think Things Thoroughly If you don’t consider your affairs over three times you may regret it. If you can do this then you don’t need to worry about future problems. All things go by with time like the flow of water. Everyday our mind could be as light as the spring winds. We have to think things through thoroughly and be careful in our actions. If we were imnulsive. we would surely regret it for many circumstances require tolerance.

Experience can teach people Astuteness; Suffering losses can teach people caution. Guang Ming Temple

Once there was a merchant who planned to go home for the New Year celebrations. He wanted to buy a present for his wife. He lingered around the market, and stopped in front of a monk who sold Buddhist verses. Out of curiosity, the merchant stepped forward and asked the monk, “How much is it for a verse?” “Ten taels of gold.” “That much?” the merchant exclaimed. “The verses are very accurate. Surely they are worth the price.” The monk replied. The merchant thought for a while and said, “Then, I would like to buy a verse.” The monk then read the verse and asked the merchant to memorize it very well. A verse only consisted of four sentences and it cost him ten.taels of gold, the merchant was somewhat regretful yet he knew it was not proper to show his reluctance. He traveled day and night till he reached home. When he arrived it was already midnight of New Year’s Eve. He saw that the front door was not locked properly. He entered and proceeded to his living quarters with wonder. In the dim light, he saw a pair of men’s slippers. Enraged, the merchant thought, “My wife has cheated on me while I was away.” He went into the kitchen and picked up a knife and went directly back to his room. In the heat of the moment, he remembered the verse from the old monk.

Take three steps forward and think, Then take three steps back and think again. If you want to know truth in life The thieves of the six roots are accomplices in crime. The wife of the merchant was awakened by the noise of his stepping three steps forward and three steps back again and again. She was elated to see her husband yet was confused by his rage. She was overwhelmed after she learned of his accusation. She said, “Ai Ya! Today is New Year’s Eve. You were not home. I placed a pair of your slippers to bring about good luck for your safe return.” Her reply hit the man like a clap of thunder. He exclaimed with joy, “Ten taels for the verse was worth every bit!” In our daily living, we must realize that what we see with our own eyes or hear with our own ears is not always in accord with reality. We can easily be delude by the six roots which are accomplices in crime. Therefore we must be cautious.

2011辛(San) 卯 (Rabbit) Prediction

Source: The Standard - www.thestandard.com.hk

 By Master Kerby Kuek

While the year of Golden Tiger was full of Natural Disasters, year of 2011, which is a year of Golden Rabbit, would be a year of MAN-Made disasters! Read on and find out more about what is going on for this year and buckle up for the roller coaster year that full of ‘intended-disasters’ also suggestions for reducing such impacts. Main events that would possibly occur: 1. Shortages of Foods cause hike in Food prices that could trigger alarm nationwide. 2. Arguments, oral disagreements, discrepancies, animosity, tensions among citizens and between nations. Demonstrations! Sabotages! 3. Spread in diseases that are ‘unprecedented’. 4. Post 80’s are aggressive than ever before. 5. A ‘brawl’ (s) in the legislative council meetings similar like Taiwan 6. Henry Tang would be elected as CEO 7. Massive change in personnel of government cabinet. 8. Constant resignation among government key personnel. 9. The sign of interest rate hikes everywhere that would cause high volatility of stocks and properties markets. 10. Economic numbers are good both for PRC and Hong Kong.

11. Property prices would drop 15-25% 12. Stock market would peak at 28,000 for Hang Sang. 13. The tensions in South Seas would execrate that cause volatility to market. 14. Speculation HK US dollar would de-peg (only possible by 2014) 15. Weak US dollar What can we do? 1. Returning to Dao and realize that human being is constantly destroying the Mother Nature (our lovely earth), be green and be gentle to our mother! 2. Positive dialogues with post 80’s, a government not only have to be clean and doing something, but ‘seen’ to be clean and doing something. 3. Be sensitive towards the source of diseases and stern actions are required. 4. Accept the fact that ‘full democracy’ would have disadvantages. 5. Hong Kong is a ‘small place’, focus on the economy would be ideal as Hong Kong people are just asking for simple life with decent place to live and work (安居樂業)! 6. One must learn when not to open his/her mouth! 7. Be thrift and lean; cut wastages ad re-use what ever we can. 8. Live with passion!

Ministry to the Filipinos Priests and Celebrant (Very Rev Edward J McCarthy)

Birhen ng Antipolo (Blessed Virgin of Antipolo)  By Victor Alzona

The Filipino American community celebrated the sixth annual pilgrimage to the Birhen ng Antipolo at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe on July 25. The story of the Birhen ng Antipolo started in Spain when her image left Mexico on March 25, 1626 and arrived on the shores of Manila three months later. With the strong belief of Our Lady’s protection for safe and successful journey, and while enthroned in a Jesuit chaVictor Alzona - Independent Systems Consultant for fortune 500 companies. pel, the image was named, Nuestra Sra. De la Paz y Buene Viaje or Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. In 1632, the image was moved to the care of Jesuits in a barrio outside Manila. Legends are told that the image disappeared in the chapel twice, but she would be found on the branches of the same tree called Tipolo. Hence, Our Lady was named Birhen ng Antipolo. In 1639, during the Chinese rebellion, the church of Antipolo was burned, but the image was found unharmed. Our Lady was taken to sitio Ginapao, and then she was brought to Cavite where the image stayed for 14 years. During the Japanese occupation, she was evacuated to the mountains of Angono. Accordingly, more than 500 people felt secure during the journey along steep and perilous

trails. Then after staying awhile in a residence in Manila, and later in Quiapo church, on October 15, 1945, Our Lady was finally transferred to her original and permanent sanctuary in the church of Anitpolo. Since then, devotees commemorate this move by making an annual pilgrimage from Quiapo church to the Cathedral of Antipolo for the 1st of May festival. For 6 years, the annual pilgrimage for the thousands of Filipino American Catholics in Florida has been to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. The National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe received the designation as a Minor Basilica on August 22, 2009. Why do Filipino Americans celebrate and honor the Birhen ng Antipolo? Many that have traveled from through out Florida to attend this event will give you the same answer ‌. to preserve our culture while we practice our faith. 33rd Annual

Bon Festival at The Morikami

 By Linda Lim C.K. Lau

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach held its 33rd annual Bon Festival on August 15th. The Bon Festival is inspired by Obon, a traditional three-day long holiday in Japan that generally takes place in midAugust to honor the spirits of one’s ancestors.

Fushu Daiko

The Gardens opened at 4PM and with continuous activities offered throughout the day, it provided for a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Typical Japanese street fair food such as yakitori, and teriyaki as well as the traditional festival food of hot dogs and funnel cake was available for purchase. Children entertained themselves in a bounce house and participated in the traditional Yo-Yo Tsuri game where Yo-Yo balloons are set floating in a tub of water and players must “fish” the balloons out. Festival attendees were also given the opportunity to stroll through the picturesque Japanese Gardens and learn about Japanese culture via interactive exhibits that provided a glimpse into life in Japan. The entertainment began at 4:45PM with three alternating performances by the Taiko Drum Group, Fushu Daiko, and the Folk Dancing Troupe, Chitose Kai. Taiko is an ancient

Japanese form of percussion using large drums. Fushu Daiko is based out of Dania Beach, FL and has been delivering amazing performances throughout Florida, and the performances at the Bon Festival were no exception. Chitose Kai performed Bon Dori, which are typical dances performed during Obon. A Bon dance usually involves dancers lining up in a circle around a high wooden scaffold called a yagura. The yagura also serves as a stage for the musicians. At the end of each dance performance, the audience was invited to the front of the stage to participate in a Bon dance. The Toro Nagashi, or lantern floating, took place at sunset on the Morikami Pond. This beautiful ceremony where candle lit lanterns are floated down a river and towards the ocean is performed to honor the departed spirits of one’s ancestors. The evening’s festivities culminated with a dazzling fireworks display over the Morikami Pond.

The World Comes to Tampa through Dragon Boating More than 10 years ago a couple of inspired businessmen in Tampa took on a venture that would put the city on the map in the International sporting circuit. Dragon boat racing began in Tampa with a few years of planning and a corporate festival in April of 2004. What began at that first event with just 30 teams took off to be one of the most popular on-water sports and team building activities in the region.

 By Christine Canevari

Now on the verge of their 9th major event, the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute continues to carry on their mission to serve the Tampa Bay Community by bringing awareness to our waterfront opportunities, through the sport of dragon boat racing. On October 23rd, the Institute is hosting an event called The Prelude to the World Championships. This event is a trial run in preparation to host the 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships, August 3-7, 2011. That’s right - The WORLD Championships! Participants in “The Prelude” will include paddlers of all abilities, many from the local corporate teams. The Institute will be using the Seddon Channel in Downtown Tampa for the first time, and this event will help to test the equipment and general flow and cohesiveness of the event in preparation for August of 2011. This prestigious event was awarded to Tampa after the Institute had successfully hosted the U.S. National Dragon Boat Racing Championships in 2006, and put the local festival on the forefront of Tampa’s most successful and exciting events. In 2007 the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) selected Tampa to host the World Championships through a bid process. After being awarded the event more than three years ago, the organizing committee can now see the largest international sporting event ever to hit Tampa, just ahead on the horizon. Dragon boats are 42 feet long, propelled by 20 paddlers, with a drummer keeping the cadence in the bow, and guided by a steersperson in the stern with a 10 foot long oar. Now a modern day competition, dragon boat racing traces its roots back to more than 2000 years in ancient China. Qu Yuan, a Chinese scholar and poet, and minister to the King from the southern Chu, was exiled from his home when his King fell to corruption. Qu Yuan later committed suicide in the Milou River in protest of the corruption of the era. The dragon boat festival has become a traditional commemoration of his death. In 1999 the first world championship was hosted in Nottingham, England. Following every two years the event has been held in Philadelphia, Poznan, Shanghai, Berlin, Sydney and Prague. The event features IDBF member nations competing against each other in 21 racing classes over the course of 5 days. National teams select their paddlers by a number of different methods, but one thing that is a constant amongst them all, they are aiming to put the best athletes in the nation on the water. The prestigious Nations Cup goes to the country that has earned the most medals throughout the event. On the local level, the Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races is held in downtown Tampa each spring and brings more than 70 teams to the waters of Garrison Channel. Teams travel in from all corners of the state of Florida, as well as more than 100 paddlers from across the United States and Canada. The event raises money for two beneficiaries: FACTors Breast Cancer Patient Support Program at Moffitt Cancer Center and The Florida Aquarium. To date, the Institute has donated more than $140,000 to its beneficiaries.
