Celebrating 100 Years This year, 2011, is the year 100 in Taiwanese calendar. Every year on the 10th of October, celebrations and events are planned to celebrate the birthday of Taiwan, which is known as the National Day of Taiwan or the Double Tenth Day. The day is also to commemorate the 1911 Wuchang Uprising, a milestone of China’s politics development and a new chapter which led to the end of the Qing Dynasty.

During this significant day of the nation, both local and international visitors and honored dignitaries from all over the world gather in Taiwan to celebrate and show their respect for the nation. Major celebrations and the celebration ceremony are planned in front of the Presidential Office Building. Taiwanese overseas in Florida also celebrate this important year with raising flag ceremony, various concerts and festivities.

China Launch Space Laboratory Compiled by Asia Trend Tiangong-1 China’s successful launch of its first space lab module is a breakthrough for China in the domains of science, economy and politics, a Russian expert told Xinhua in a recent interview. Tiangong-1, or Heavenly Palace-1 paved the way for China to operate a permanent space station around 2020 and become the world’s third country have operated space stations after the United States and the Soviet Union.
China’s project would allow the international scientific and engineering community to conduct more and bolder experiments, as research on geography, astronomy and bio-technology in a lowgravity environment, such as that of a space station, will bring greater achievements than those conducted on the surface of the Earth. China’s project gives more choices to the international community in space explorations.
Tiangong-1 blasted off at 9:16 p.m. Beijing Time (1316 GMT) in a northwestern desert area. The manned space program showed that China’s economy is capable of performing such a large-scale space project.

Welcome the newest dragon boat to the Central Florida Community Without her, there would not be two dragon boats residing at Lake Fairview, Orlando. Without her, we would not have Orlando Dragon Boat Club which now serves hundreds of paddlers in Orlando. Harriett Lake, a well-known philanthropy in Orlando generous donated two dragon boats to Women Playing For T.I.M.E.® and funded the development of a dragon boat program in Central Florida a year ago. On Aug 25th, Orlando Health Foundation invited the community to honor her contributions and officially welcome these two dragon boats which are going to bring a new excited and hottest water spot to Central Florida.
On October 15, 2011, Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival will take place again at Disney World®. Women Playing For T.I.M.E. and MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando are the charitable beneficiaries of this festival. AAHC consists of many Asian American organizations who works together to preserve the Asian culture and heritage through informative programs. Discover Aboriginal Delights,
a Hot Springs Village, Wondrous Waterfall and an Amusement Park in Taipei County’s Wulai By Scott B. Freiberger

To experience a touristy but flavorful taste of aboriginal culture, Wulai (烏來) is an aboriginal village in Taipei County about fifty minutes outside Taipei City by car and a little over an hour by bus. “Wulai” means “hot springs” in the Atayal (泰雅族) native tongue. In this hot springs village discover the pristine Nanshih River (南勢溪 Nanshih Xi), which makes for fun swimming and rafting activity, as well as Wulai Falls (烏來瀑布 Wulai Pubu), one of the largest waterfalls on Taiwan that tops at around eighty meters. Magnificent cherry trees (櫻花 Yinghua) beckon and from February to April the town hosts Wulai Cherry Blossom Festival (烏來櫻花 季 Wulai Yinghua Ji). During this time a variety of cherry trees, including Bachung, Feihan, Fuji and Jiye, are in full bloom. Along with tourists, unique birds, such as Chinese Bulbul, Formosa Yuhina, Fulvettas, and Taiwan Sibia, are enticed to the area by the lush cherries. Dreamland, which is located within a resort (Yun Hsien Hotel), also boasts pricey (NT $500) yet lively aboriginal culture shows. You may be disappointed if you had expected to encounter an Atayal tribe chief, aside from the touristy performances there aren’t many aborigines in town these days. You’ll need to take the cable car to reach the amusement park and resort, the cable car ticket comes included with the price of admission to Dreamland. A small tourist train (NT $50) also transports passengers 1.6 kilometers from the village to the falls and cable car area. A night for two at the amusement park hotel typically costs around NT $3500 and includes breakfast, rates are seasonal so call
Dreamland for pricing and availability. Wulai makes for great walking and talking among friends so wear light clothing (dress in layers) and good walking shoes. To reach the amusement park and hotel you’ll need to walk up more stairs than Rubeus Hagrid has hairs, so travel lightly if you plan to spend the night. While in town try some famous local delicacies such as cherry jelly (櫻花果凍 Yinghua guodong) and sweet gluttonous rice with peanut or sesame seed shavings (麻糬 mwaji). Mwaji, or “mochi” as the snack is called by Japanese, typically costs NT $10 each or around NT $100 for a box of ten. Bamboo dishes also make for enticing native foods. The hot springs in Wulai have undergone major renovations in recent years, you may opt to take a dip in a local hot spring or to spend the night at an upscale Wulai hot springs resort, as well. By Taipei MRT exit Xindian Station, the bus heading towards Wulai is the only one in front of the station without a number and has the Chinese characters (烏來 Wulai) on the front. The MRT fare from Taipei Main Station to Xindian is NT $30, have some change handy, you’ll need to add NT $25 once you swipe your Easy Card while boarding the bus. Late Night: With AASA The University of Florida’s Asian American Student Assembly was held on August 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm at the Phillips Center for Performing Arts for the second year with almost all of its 1700 seats filled up. The theme for the event was “Late Night with AASA.” To create a more intimate, nighttime,talk-show atmosphere, the emcees interacted with various members of the performing groups and the audience. To bring an educational element to the night, AASA invited Becky Lee – 3rd place winner of Survivor and founder of Becky’s Fund against domestic abuse in women – to be the guest speaker. The Indian Student Association also performed at AASA for the first time ever with a series of dances and a video about South Asian dances. “AASA is important because in one of the largest universities in the nation, the event serves to welcome new and returning students, celebrate and showcase their diverse talents, and provide a family and life-long friendships for those looking for a place to call home,” (AASU President, Michael Satyapor, Senior). The night was filled with cultural skits, videos, and dances that aimed to unite, educate, and entertain the UF community. “AASA is consistently a very enjoyable show; however, it gets bigger and better each year. Last year was a huge step to the Phillips Center from the Reitz Grand Ballroom. Its mission is to develop leadership, to be a source of political and social advocacy for issues facing Asian American, and to promote unity and a voice for the campus and community of UCF. “Our annual showcase provides a chance for you to get to know the great student organizations that are affiliated with APAC here at UCF,” says Cecillia Barr, APAC President of 2011-12. A Constitutional Provision Allowing Discrimination Consider this: you and your family are aliens ineligible for citizenship in the United States. You are law-abiding, you pay your taxes, and you are integral members of your community. You are, however, prevented by law or the law regulates you from the ownership, inheritance, disposition and possession of real property. What? The current Florida Constitution provides for the basic rights of natural persons in Article I, Section 2. It provides that everyone has inalienable rights, including “to enjoy and defend life and liberty, to pursue happiness, to be rewarded for industry, and to acquire, possess and protect property[.]” But, that is not all. “No person shall be deprived of any right because of race, religion, national origin, or physical ability.” Despite these provisions, there is another part to the Florida Constitution’s provision on basic

rights: the right of the state to pass laws to regulate or prohibit “aliens ineligible for citizenship” from “ownership, inheritance, disposition, and possession” of real property. Yes, that’s right: the State of Florida may discriminate against “aliens ineligible for citizenship” based upon the Alien Law contained in Article I, Section 2. Luckily for those “aliens ineligible for citizenship,” however, Florida has no current laws to enable discrimination against them as to real property issues. The issue is still important, though. Under the current Florida Constitution, Florida can enact further discriminatory laws based on the Alien Land Law. Who wants that? The Alien Land Law itself is discriminatory, and unenforceable. The histories of these types of Asian-based discriminatory laws show that these laws were enacted in individual states across the United
States due to the then-existing anti-Asian sentiment, especially against those of Chinese and Japanese descent. These laws began to appear in the late 1800’s and continued into the early 1900’s. These immigrants were restricted in their rights, such as prohibitions on land ownership or the right to access to a court as a plaintiff or a defendant. These Chinese and other Asian immigrants, known as the derogatorily named “Coolies[,]” built the railroads that settled the western United States. Despite their contributions to the United States, they were discriminated against by the people that they served through laws enacted to restrict them. The laws were also enacted to restrict them in their trades, such as the prohibition of land ownership in California due to competition from Japanese farmers. This discrimination also included violence against Asians in many cities, including Denver, San Francisco and New York.

The United States federal government also participated in the discrimination against the Chinese. In 1882, then-President Chester A. Arthur signed into law “The Chinese Exclusion Act” after revisions in 1880 to the Burlington Act of 1868. The Chinese Exclusion Act allowed Congress to immediately exclude Chinese immigration. This Act was intended to last for ten years, but was not repealed until December of 1943, by the Magnuson Act; it effectively restricted Chinese immigration for over fifty years. Despite historical challenges to these laws, even the United States Supreme Court upheld the laws in the past. The Supreme Court determined that states could restrict property ownership and that such restrictions were not discriminatory. Thankfully, times have changed. Over years, these anti-Asian state laws have been repealed, just as the Magnuson Act repealed the discrimination against Chinese immigration. The most recent states to abolish their alien land laws were Wyoming in 2001, Kansas in 2002 and New Mexico in 2006. All other states had previously abolished their alien land laws. All but one, that is. Florida remains the last state to maintain its discriminatory law, and it is contained in its Constitution. Although there have been recent attempts to remove this blatantly discriminatory provision from the Florida Constitution, it has not yet been successful. Changes to the Florida Constitution
must be done through Florida voters. Sixty percent of Florida voters in an election must approve the amendment to remove the law from the Constitution. The most recent balloting to remove the Alien Land Law from the Constitution was in 2008. This proposed amendment to remove the Alien Land Law from Article I, Section 2 of the Florida Constitution failed, only receiving 47.9% of the voters’ approval to remove the offensive provision. The failure was attributed to the confusion of voters that the provision addressed illegal immigration, not the regulation of real property by “aliens ineligible for citizenship.” Even after the failed attempt for an amendment to remove the Alien Land Law, another attempt was made in 2009 to remove the language from the Florida Constitution through a bill in the Florida House of Representatives and one in the Florida Senate. Both bills failed in 2010. The Alien Land Law has not made another appearance on a Florida ballot for Florida voters to remove this unconstitutional provision since 2008. The Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association, supported by a grant from the Florida Bar Foundation, is working to educate Florida voters as to the need to remove this discriminatory and unconstitutional provision from Florida’s Constitution. Although not actively enforced because it is discriminatory, the existence of the Alien Land Law as a part of the Constitution is, and should be, offensive to every Floridian.

Not only is the provision not supported by law, it is also based on antiquated ideas. Like these antiquated ideas, the Alien Land Law must be removed from the Florida Constitution. It is a law past its time. In support of the efforts to educate the public, GOAABA recently hosted a breakfast event in Downtown Orlando to discuss the issues surrounding the Alien Land Law. Community leaders of both Asian and non-Asian groups, local elected representatives, media representatives and GOAABA members and their guests were in attendance to hear Dr. Piyush C. Agrawal, the Chairman of the Asian American Federation of Florida, address the current issues surrounding the Alien Land Law. GOAABA acknowledges and thanks its attendees and participants, including Representative Scott Randolph; Samir Gupta of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida - Central Florida Chapter; Winnie Tang of Organization of Chinese Americans - South Florida Chapter; Mark Russell of The Orlando Sentinel; Pam Kancher and Susan Mitchell of the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida; and Hari Singh of the Indian Horizon of Florida. Tampa Bay brings the world together at the 10th World Dragon Boat Racing By Asia Trend

In August, thousands of dragon boat international paddlers gathered at Tampa Bay, Florida to compete in the 10th annual Dragon Boat World Championships. Paddlers came from 17 different countries including Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore and China. After five days of intensive race, Germany got the Premium Open championship with United States being second and China being third. Philippines Team won the small boat championship. The sport of dragon boating is the fastest growing water sport worldwide with million paddlers. In North America, the sport is raced in more than 70 annual festivals across the nation. Next year, The World Races will be held in Hong Kong and the 2013 will be held in Tehran, Iran. Walgreens Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Saturday October 15, 2011 at Downtown Disney West Side, Florida from 8am to 5:30pm. Estimated 70 teams will be competed in this one-day event. Asia Trend Magazine will host its second annual Asian Cultural EXPO with 4-hour continuous entertainments and workshops. The first Apple Store in Hong Kong
being the 100th overseas store outside the United States Compiled by Asia Trend opened on September 24, 2011 Apple today officially opened the doors of its first-ever retail store in Hong Kong. Located at the International Financial Center (IFC) Mall, very much considered the heart of Hong Kong’s business center, according to Engadget China more than 300 customers were lined-up and ready for the Grand Opening by 3AM on Saturday morning. It is Apple’s most expensive store yet.
