Hundreds of movie fans packed West Orange 5 Cinemas to preview Mimi Chan’s “Pui Chan: Kung Fu Pioneer” on September 1st. This documentary film received tremendous responses from movie watchers, friends, students, and fellow filmmakers in the industry. Tickets for both days were completely sold out. This film was also honored as the Central Florida Film Festival Best documentary and Audience Choice Award. This film is not just about an extraordinary life of a Kung Fu Master, but also an inspiring story for every immigrant who struggles to achieve. “One must like what he is doing in order to succeed,” said Grandmaster Pui Chan after the first screening at the Q&A section. Voter Registration in Florida On July 14, 2010 the Asian American Federation of Florida hosted a Civic Engagement Workshop in Orlando, sponsored by APIAVote, to educate and train community leaders interested in increasing voter registration and voter participation among Asian Americans in Florida. Based on the latest Census, Asian Americans constitute the fastest growing population in Florida, with a 71% increase from 266,256 in 2000 to 454, 821 in 2010. The largest Asian population is found in Broward (56,795), followed by Orange County (56,581), Hillsborough (42,076), MiamiDade (37,669) and Duval (35,901). Still, Florida Election Department reports that there are only

66,706 Asian American voters (1.1% of Florida voters), with a low turnout in the 2008 Election (36,876), with an even lower turnout in the 2010 General Election (15,127). The Asian American Federation of Florida (AAFF) is currently exploring ways to pursue election advocacy initiatives in Florida, in partnership with APIAVote and Asian American Justice Center (AAJC). AKM at UF: Illuminate Asian Kaleidoscope Month (AKM) at the University of Florida and Gainesville community is a month long celebration of the histories, cultures, and accomplishments made by the Asians and Asian Americans in the past and present. This year’s theme is “Illuminate,” as the month is dedicating to shedding light on various Asian and Asian American issues that are not normally discussed in every day conversations including Asian Americans in voting, with disabilities, and in LGBTQ affairs to name a few. Many accredited Asians and Asian American speakers have come in the past such as Arun Gandhi (grandson of Mahatma Gandhi), and Betty Nguyen (CNN correspondent). This year, AKM is providing its first ever scholarship to exceptional UF students who have made outstandingaccomplishments as a leader, and/or have in the Asian American community. AKM will have over 20 events throughout the month. The main shows are Opening Ceremony,

A Liter of Light was chosen for our philanthropy this year as it suits well with our theme “Illuminate.” We are dedicated to shedding light on various Asian and Asian American issues, and their project is dedicated to bringing light into the lives of millions. This organization provides light in homes worldwide without electricity using three materials: one-liter plastic bottles, water, and bleach. These bottle light bulbs are installed into the roofs of homes allowing the outside sunlight to diffract inside the home during the day. These simple devices illuminate entire rooms and homes of those who previously lived in darkness. We are hoping to collect $2,000 during the month of AKM to donate to this project so that many more homes throughout the world can be illuminated this year. What is “Barrio Fiesta”?

It is a Spanish word which means “feast in a rural town”. Words such as “festivities, celebration, merry making, dining, dancing, singing” are synonymous with this term. It is a Philippine tradition brought by the Spaniards during their regime from the 1500’s. It is supposed to celebrate the “birthday” of a Roman Catholic patron saint specifically assigned for a particular town or “barrio”. Now what is supposed to happen during this special day? Well, primarily the Roman Catholic church for that particular barrio will hold an evening procession around the community showcasing the image of its patron saint. An example would be a statue of St. Peter or the Virgin Mary or whoever is the patron saint of that town. The religious devotees shall march along the image holding candles while a brass band
plays religious music at the rear of the procession. During the day however different brass bands will march and play around the town usually led by pretty majorettes wielding a baton and wearing her standard uniform that shows her beautiful pair of legs which I always ogle about when I was a little kid (also when I was older). Before the fiesta, the town will be decorated with colorful banners or “banderitas” and other floral decorations to add to the festive appearance of the locality. You might say that the town and the church will be “dressed up” for the festivities. What else happens during the day of the fiesta? Well, it is assumed that each household in the community should prepare a banquet of food

for the visitors coming to their town to celebrate. That is why you usually see pigs, chickens, cows being roasted around the neighborhood. And as you wander the area you can smell the aroma of “lechon” (roasted pig) and all you need to do is follow the smoke billowing from where the grill is. You can also smell the aroma of pork bar-b-ques, the pork and chicken adobo (especially the aroma of garlic that goes with it), the “menudos” ( meat with tomato paste and potatoes), the “pancit malabon”(noodles with smoked fish, mussels , shrimps, crabs and scallops) , the “calderetta” ( goat meat with curry and spices). And don’t forget the local pale pilsen beer that goes well with the “chicharon” (deep fried pork rind and intestines) and “sisig” (sautéed cheeks and lips of the pig with hot sauce). Yum, yum, yum. Are you salivating already? The excitement does not end there. Now we have dancing and singing in the plaza. Different performers from different walks of life show their talents during the program. The Filipinos are very talented people. They can imitate any popular celebrity and do a better job than the original. How about that? Then there will be fireworks at night while the music from different brass bands perform alternately at the town plaza. This is now the opportune time for our able bachelors to approach the beautiful local maidens to a dance. The better you are as a dancer the more chances of you meeting the most popular lady in the village. So it pays to learn how to dance dear gentlemen. The town plaza will also have its traditional “mini fair “ with different rides and amusement shows. The aforementioned scenario was what the PAAT (Philippine American Association of Tampa) tried to resemble in their version of “Barrio Fiesta” held last August 19, 20-12 at the Philippine Cultural Foundation Inc. (PCFI) at Nine Eagles Road in Tampa, Florida with the able leadership of their new president Mr. Joey Omila who also did the hosting of the celebration. This story begins more like legend: samurai traveled from far and wide to study swordsmanship for one day with four masters. This was a great opportunity for students of the sword and individuals interested in becoming students to learn about and practice four different styles of Japanese swordsmanship in one seminar. The seminar was hosted by Orlando Martial Arts Meetup, a group of around 400 martial artists who gather to share experience in a number of different martial arts through regularly scheduled, low cost seminars. And, with such a large turnout, upwards of 30-40 sword swinging students, the offering of Shindai Dojo’s 2000 square feet was tremendous. Gil Gillespie Sensei, of Shindai Dojo, took the floor first. Gillespie Sensei began by sharing some of the history of the style and his own personal history in martial arts. His instruction in MusoJikidenEishinRyu was focused on the forms,

or kata, of his style, although this swordsmanship also offers seated and standing techniques with partners. The forms Gillespie Sensei chose for us to practice emphasized proper technique of drawing the sword from the scabbard into a cut. Gillespie Sensei instructed not only in proper form, but also proper attitude and focus, qualities deemed paramount by students of the Japanese sword. Upon completion of Gillespie Sensei’s time, I took the floor to instruct in KanRyuTaitokudo. I began my time sharing some brief personal history and shared that this style was something I learned from my grandfather. I also wanted to emphasize our training methodology: starting the process with slow deliberate movements and gradually advancing to fast application. Our training is based in both personal development and applicable skill. My demonstration was of three kata, two from standing and one seated followed
by a kumitachi, or paired form, with my student Nathan Cafierosan. After the demonstration, I instructed the attendees in how to perform one of the kata. Finally, we broke up into pairs and practiced the kumitachi. It was very interesting for me to watch the paired work. Since most people came from different styles, they explored how this form would fit into what they do, investigating how their style would apply the basic concept. This was a great experience and I was honored to share with such a great group of people. Next up was Pete Campbell Sensei, of Rising Sun Dojo. Campbell Sensei shared with us MukushinRyuBujutsu. He began by sharing the history of his style and the philosophy behind what they do. Campbell Sensei also shared some of the experiences him and his students had on a recent trip to Japan to visit the ruins of the castle where his style was founded and practiced centuries ago. Campbell Sensei and his student, Marty

The last instructor of the day was Bob Elder Sensei, of Orlando Toyama Ryu Dojo. Elder Sensei began by sharing some of the history of Toyama Ryu and explained why the training methods. He instructed in basic form and cuts. Elder Sensei’s students demonstrated a number of cutting patterns on the goza targets. Elder Sensei explained that the focus of Toyama Ryu is on proper and effective technique. As we practiced each of the cuts, it was evident how important this was in how he and his students approached the participants, correcting the movements to be

On July 3rd, members of the Rising Sun Dojo’s Mukushin-ryu Bujutsu class and family members attended a 4 day Gasshuku (all day training) in Japan. On our arrival by train from Kyoto, we were met by Ohashi Kenshin sensei, the 15th generation souke of Mukushinryu Bujutsu and traveled by car to the town of Natasho, and on to where we were staying at a small camping lodge in the mountains outside of the village. At the lodge we were greeted by fellow students and their families of the hombu dojo along with Matsuda sensei, senior instructor and Takematsu sensei, who had traveled 24 hours by bus and train to attend and take part in the gasshuku. We enjoyed an evening of grilled rainbow trout freshly caught along with sake and great friendship- both new and old. Our home for the next four days was a very rustic traditional tatami floor house. Day 2 training began at noon at the Mukushin-ryu hombu (main or headquarters) dojo in the town of Obama, and we were met at the dojo by four sets of yoroi (armor) set up at one end of the main hall. Having the 4 sets of yoroi set up at the end of the training hall felt as if we were being watched by the ancestors of Mukushin-ryu. These were not reproductions, but real armorbetween 200 and 300 years old. As the shibucho (group leader) of Ichiryou Gusoku Musha no Kai – a group dedicated to the restoration and preservation of samurai armor and the martial arts and armor curator for the Asakura Museum Ohashi sensei has been restoring the original armor from

and going into battle wearing it.
In all, there were seven of us, three from the Rising Sun Dojo in the US, and four from Japan. There were a couple of reporters there- one from a local newspaper and another from the local TV station. Having both American and Japanese in full armor and training together in combat techniques was quite the event!
After a dinner break, we returned to the training hall for another 2 hour training session, this time- takke tameshigiri (bamboo cutting).
After a couple of hours of training we took a short water break and then suited up in the yoroi for more training, this time in 40+ pounds of armor! The style, or ryuha of Mukushin-ryu was founded in the late 1470’s, and is based on real battlefield techniques. To get a feel for what this was really like to fight and use the techniques we train in, Ohashi sensei arranged this training in full yoroi for our visit. While the armor provides excellent protection from the various battlefield weapons of the time, it can (and did) at first also seem to be very restrictive and cumbersome. Part of our training was learning proper movement while in the armor – both defensive as well as offensive movement and technique.. After another 2 hours of training we removed the armor…while no one seemed to notice the weight (or heat) while we were training- everyone was so excited to be training in real yoroi we didn’t notice, but once it was removed we realized how heavy and hot it was to wear. We only spent 2 hours in full yoroi…it’s hard to imagine spending all day outside in the heat and humidity,
Day 3 training was a trip to Asakura Village and Museum. The founder of Mukushin-ryu Bujutsu was Kageyuzaemon Ohashi and was a retainer for the Asakura clan. In 1573 Oda Nobunaga defeated the Asakura and burnt the castle and village down. All that remain today are the original foundation stones of the castle and village and is an ongoing archeological dig. Day 4 found us back in the training hall for the first half of the day along with Ohashi sensei and Takematsu sensei for more training. Afterwards we returned to the camp lodge and went about catching more rainbow trout for dinner and Ohashi sensei’s famous “trout sake”. Another great evening of good food and great friendship before leaving the next morning to Kyoto for a couple of days of sightseeing and relaxation. 2012 Chinese Yo-Yo Camp Summer Camp “I like the green one.” “I like the yellow one.” These were the voices of students as they picked out their Chinese Yo-Yos. As arms moved in an upward and downward motion, screams of excitement could be heard as Chinese yo-yos started to spin in midair. Participants gathered in Orlando from as far as Sarasota and Clearwater to attend the 2012 Chinese Yo-Yo Camp Summer Camp. The camp was organized by the Central Florida Chinese American Youth Association (CFCAYA) and sponsored by the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission, R.O.C. A diverse group of students ages ranging from as young as 6 years old to adults came together to learn a Chinese folk art – the Chinese yo-yo. Additionally, some of the adult students are Chinese language teachers and they attended in order to introduce and spread awareness of this Chinese folk art to their students. Students could be seen jumping up in joy as they successfully tossed the yo-yo in the air and caught it. Screams of achievement of “Yay!” and “I did it!” could be heard throughout the day as students accomplished a new trick. Beginner students started off learning how to start and adjust their yo-yos.They quickly progressed into tricks such as tossing and brain teaser. The advanced students learned group tosses and leg tricks. There were two special guests from Miami, Mr. Lee and Mr. Liu. Mr. Lee

Mills50 — Celebration of Arts
Anyone who has driven along Mills Avenue between Colonial Drive and Princeton Street - or in the Park Lake Highland, Colonialtown or Lake Eola Heights neighborhoods - has to have noticed the colorful “utility” boxes on many street corners. These hand painted boxes are part of the Mills 50 art box project! The purpose of the art box project was to create an environment which depicted the community’s diversity, creativity, commerce and neighborhoods. And the project has certainly enhanced the aesthetics of the Mills 50 district. Local artists painted twenty seven (27) traffic engineering utility boxes - transforming them into unique works of art. The art box project was completed in four (4) phases. Phase I had nine (9) art boxes: Mills & Virginia (artist Genevieve Bernard); Mills & Highland (artist -Siege); Mills & Marks (artist: Harry Glotfelty); two boxes at Colonia & Mills (artist: Danny Rodriguez); Colonial & Summerlin (artists: ESE Students from Edgewater HS); Colonial & Hyer (artist: Lauren Galant); Colonial & Shine (artist: Harry
Glotfelty) and Colonial & Ferncreek (artist: Lee Vandergrift). Phase II had five (5) art boxes: Virginia & Ferncreek (artist: Commissioner Patty Sheehan); Livingston & Ferncreek (Danny Rodriguez); Highland & Marks (artists: students from Lake Highland Prep middle school); Ferncreek & Oregon (artists: students from Ferncreek Elementary School) and Summerlin & Livingston (artist: Antje Dardin). a Chinese-American Girl Named the Most Expensive Cars in the U.S. Mars Launch Clara Ma, the daughter of Chinese immigrants to the US, became part of space history when she witnessed one of the most sophisticated instruments ever used to explore another world successfully land on Mars with a name suggested by her. The US$2.5 billion (S$3.1 billion) Mars Science Laboratory and its Curiosity rover landed on the Red Planet on Aug 5, 2012 to determine if life ever existed there. Clara, from Kansas, suggested the name Curiosity in a winning essay submitted to NASA three years ago. Clara, now 15, was a special guest at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, for the historic landing, according to the Kansas City Star newspaper. She also wrote her name inside the rover with a marker pen and experienced the thrill of watching the car-size rover liftoff in November from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the newspaper said.

“Something like this is probably never going to happen to me again, so I just want to enjoy every single moment,” Clara was quoted as saying as she waited in the control room where the anticipation and anxiety was building. This is witnessing history and “I am going to be part of it”, she said. Clara’s 14-year-old sister, Renny, and her parents, Lisheng Cao and Frank Ma, accompanied her to the laboratory. Both parents graduated from Tsinghua University and immigrated to the US in the 1990s, according to a People’s Daily article. Her father was surprised at the invitation, saying it was an especially rare chance for Chinese Americans, the article said. Clara, a sixth-grader at the time, suggested Curiosity because, as she wrote in the beginning of the essay, “it is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind. Hong Kong Revisited Ah, Hong Kong (HK), the “Pearl of the Orient”! It’s been so long since I last visited and so much has changed for the better. If you haven’t been back for some time, you really should consider re-visiting. If you haven’t been there yet, you should seriously consider HK as one of your future travel destinations. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed! The last time I really visited HK (other than airport layovers) was when it was still under British control. Since HK returned to China, I’ve been somewhat hesitant to visit, because I have been skeptical about China’s promise to preserve HK‘s democratic system. Well, fast forward fifteen years to this past summer. I witnessed first hand China’s ingenuity in imposing the “One country, Two systems” policy on HK. It has allowed HK to continue to prosper beyond anyone’s expectations! My first impression of HK was that the new airport and the suspension bridges were very well designed. The infrastructure and public transportation in HK are truly world class. The subway system is fast, clean, quiet, and efficient. You can pretty much reach any destination in the HK–Kowloon–Lantau Island metropolitan area within a half hour. I’d highly recommend getting the Octopus prepaid card that is accepted for most modes of public transportation. You can even use it at the 7-Eleven stores found

in virtually every subway station! The HK skyline has changed so much! The tallest buildings in the 80s are now only about half the height of the new ones. The best place to see the HK skyline is from the Kowloon Public Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui. The night view is even more spectacular! Be sure to get to the pier before 8pm each night for the “Symphony of Lights” show where the participating skyscrapers put on a synchronized light and laser show. If you want to get a quick survey of the street scenes from the Central District to Causeway Bay, you can hop on the double-deck trams. The tramways system has been serving HK for over a century and is still very popular, especially with the tourists.The drawback is that the trams are not air conditioned, so it can get quite hot at the stops. Outdoor markets and food stalls were once very popular in HK. Due to health regulations, the outdoor food stalls have moved indoors to the shopping malls’ food courts. I honestly quite miss those outdoor food stalls of the olden days! However, you can still find outdoor markets in certain parts of the city . We quite like the historic Temple Street outdoor market off Jordan Rd. in Kowloon. This area comes alive at dusk and activity lasts well
into the night. There are more than one hundred stalls selling clothes, watches, jewelry, art and crafts, electronics, toys, HK souvenirs, antique/ collectibles, and other exotic items. The streets are filled with shoppers,including a large percentage of tourists. There are also restaurants with outdoor seatings filled with diners. The delicious smell of seafood fills the air. Personnally, the biggest attraction of visiting HK is its delicious restaurants, especially the Cantonese style restaurants. From the inexpensive noodle and BBQ shops around town to the award-winning restaurants in the fancy hotels, it’s hard to find poor quality Chinese food. Even the Chinese fast food chains like Fairwood and Café de Coral serve good food at reasonable prices. Although the quality of dishes at the good restaurants in HK is top-notch, the prices are comparable with, or even more expensive than those in US Chinatown’s restaurants. HK has long been known to be the “shopper’s paradise”, and it still is. Upscale malls, with every brand name products you can think of, are everywhere. However, compared to years past, the prices are no longer cheap. I guess the cost of living in HK has risen significantly as the city reinvents itself to serve as the gateway into the fast-growing China market. We really enjoyed our visit to HK and I hope you’ll too! Zàijiàn (goodbye)!

Korean cuisine is marked by the use of gojuchang (fermented Korean spicy chili pepper pastes), sesame oil, and the dominance of kimchi, the national spicy pickled cabbage. The cuisine is often spicy, flavorful, and fresh. Korea House – which recently underwent renovations with additions of new wood booths and future plans for a karaoke lounge – is spacious and inviting, with several tables equipped with Korean barbecue grills for cooking at the table. For appetizers, start off with the gunmandu, Korean pan fried dumplings made with pork, and the haemul-pajun, a Korean style seafood pancake with green onions and hot pepper. The haemul-pajun, made from a batter of eggs, wheat flour, rice flour, is absolutely the best I’ve had in Orlando, slightly crunchy, crispy, and stuffed with green onion and bits of calamari and imitation crab. Add a dab of spicy chili soy sauce to the slice of haemul-pajun and enjoy. Japchae, clear, Korean sweet potato noodles stir-fried in sesame oil with vegetables, mushrooms, and beef, is also a tasty starter, and fun to slurp. Dolsot-bibimbap, a mixed rice dish served sizzling in a hot stone pot, is full of vegetables, sliced beef, and topped with a fried egg. To eat, just add some of the sweet pepper paste provided, to taste, and mix it all with your metal spoon while relishing the crunchy, slightly burnt rice on the bottom of the pot.
The Korean-Chinese food menu here is a relic of the historical influence of Korea’s Chinese neighbors on Korean cuisine. Dishes such as sweet and sour chicken, shrimp, pork, stir fried beef are all prepared with a slight touch of Korean style, full of spicy flavors and sesame oil. The jjambbong, a huge bowl of seafood spicy noodle soup, and the jajang-myun, black soybean paste noodles with beef and vegetables, are said to be particular favorites of the locals here at Korea House. Other popular dishes here include the hot Korean stews like the Sundubu-Tzigae, a spicy, soft tofu stew with shrimp, and seafood, and the gom-tang oxtail soup that is prepared by simmering for 10 hours and served with clear noodles and beef. There is also an extensive list of fish prepared Korean style with a little bit of salt, grilled or fried, such as cod, monkfish, and mackerel fish to be eaten with white rice. When you order large portions of the Korean barbecue menu, the dining party can opt to use the the grills built into the tables or have the kitchen prepare the dishes and bring them out on hot sizzling plates. The gal-bi, thick chunks of beef short ribs marinated in Korean barbecue sauce, are excellent here as are the bulgogi, available in pork, chicken, or beef varieties. Korea House is a place known for quality Korean cuisine and its reputation for one of the best Korean restaurants in Orlando is well deserved.
