Last Friday, the Executive Officers gave the Budgetary Proposal for the fall 2019- spring 2020 school year to the Student Budgetary Committee. On Wednesday, the Club Sports Council voted on the new 2019-2020 Executive Officers. The names of the new Executives will be announced next Exec Corner. A SIFA to Remember By Maria Cilenti, President
The Southern Intercollegiate Fencing Association (SIFA) was held at UNCG this year. Our Appalachian State fencing team not only attended, but made history by showing up with 8 full squads and a total of 24 fencers.
represented our team and school very well. After a rough morning of pool bouts, the squad came out on top, making it to the semifinals and ultimately getting 4th place. This match not only consisted of intense energy from the squad, but the entire App State team and parents, For the first time in App UNC Charlotte teams, and State history, we brought a UNC Greensboro teams full women’s saber squad to standing behind the girls compete which consisted of cheering them on. Our Emily MacDonald, Caroline team prides themselves Gorman, Rachael Arnold, on how welcoming and and Griffin Hoey. These supportive they are of one four women not only had another. Having UNCC the pressure of the event and UNCG cheer on our on them, but also living up teammates demonstrates to being the first women’s how comfortable and saber squad. other fencers we are and it shows why we are so proud to call ourselves Mountaineers. Senior epee fencer Maria Cilenti was placed on a composite squad with UNCG fencers and they dominated the epee event. Cilenti and her teammates clicked immediately after meeting one another and fenced their ways to a BYE in direct eliminations and then facing off against George Washington University. GWU needed one more win after having a 4-1 lead, but the UNCG girls managed to win their next 2 bouts, making the score 4-3 and leaving it to Cilenti 8
to tie up the score. Touch by touch, her bout was 4-4 and went into priority where Cilenti successfully scored the winning touch and tied the score for her squad! She stated, “there are moments in every fencer’s career where you’re overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment. For me, hearing my entire team cheering behind me when I got that touch was one of those moments and I’ll never forget it.” In the end, the UNCG-App State composite squad received 5th place overall!
squad consisted of Ben Lockwood, Ian Brundige, and Patrick Arsena who were all a force to be reckoned with. The men made it to the finals and were awarded second place, but Ian Brundige took home an incredible individual victory after defeating the Japanese National Champion. The saber squads fenced to their fullest potential. Nathan Potvin, AJ Fitzgerald, and Nick Bayne all stood out to our saber coaches for applying new skills they’ve worked on in practices and showing tremendous improvement!
Our men’s sabers brought three full squads and each of them excelled in the tournament. The first saber Our foil squad consisted of
Cody Edwards, James Kuhns, and Drake Bogart. All three worked together extremely well and fenced their way into the semifinals! Although they lost, the squad won 4th place and their individual victories didn’t go unnoticed. Kuhns and Edwards have put in extra hours outside of practice and it showed as they were commended from other teams for their outstanding performances and clean footwork! Finally, our men’s epees brought two full squads and although each had a rough start to the day, the men got better and better as the event went on.

Both squads took their constructive criticism to heart and came out like completely new fencers in their DEs. Ian Clapp specifically rose to the occasion when he was losing 4-1 with only 18 seconds left in one of his bouts. Clapp managed to score 3 touches in a row, tying the score and going into priority where he ultimately won the bout! Saber fencer Nick Bayne stated, “It was one of the most successful and fun tournaments I’ve been to all year. It’s sad knowing this was the last tournament with the amazing seniors that have helped build this club for four years.” This SIFA was the most memorable one we have had in a long time. Coming home with medals not only speaks on behalf of our teams’ skill, but seeing everyone fence better than they ever have was priceless. The seniors are extremely grateful for the hard work and dedication our teammates have put in and are even more proud of the family they have become.

AHO Loves the Sun
By Katelyn Goff, Club Sports Representative There is no right way to prepare for Boone weather. The rain has been playing games here lately and we were finally able to get our last matrix game in against Coastal Carolina two weekends ago. The Saturday of gameday was a warm, slightly windy, sunny, and an absolutely gorgeous day to play rugby. For our last game of the season the team came together and showed up ready to play with 110% of effort and teamwork. This was an all around good club sports illustrated // no. 111
game from both teams. Both, us and Coastal, played hard and were ready for every play to happen. Even though we put up a good fight, we still fell short and lost them game 22-15. A loss is written down in the books but in my eyes we won because of all the hard work we put in and how much fun we all had. I, personally, am so proud of this team and the way we have played throughout this season. I could not be a member of a better, more loving or accepting team. AHO has helped me
become the woman I am today and I could not thank them enough. AHO Women’s Rugby has had a great year so far and we may be done with our games but the year is not over yet. In these last few weeks of classes, AHO will be enjoying the sun on Sanford Mall and hitting the books hard. We hope that all of our players and all of the other Club Sports teams finish out the year strong and succeed not only in their sports but also in the classrooms. 12

One Last Show
By Jacob Louie, Secretary Since the beginning of the year we have heard things like “heavy is the head that wears the crown” and “we’ve taken some tough losses”, but this upcoming weekend will not be the same. Your Appalachian State University Alien Mountain Nomads are travelling down to Bermuda Run to compete at Sectionals 2019. It’s a win or go home situation, and by that I mean all we have to do is come in the top 7 and as the great Jimmy V said, “we survive and advance.” With a top 7 placement we will qualify for regionals and play in Axton, Virginia in two weeks. club sports illustrated // no. 111
With the year coming to a close we have some business to take care of in this Club Sports article. To begin I would like to shout out all of our new officers that were elected this past Monday. Coming back for his second run at captain and this time El Pres is Matty McDaniels. Being upgraded from Secretary to VP is yours truly Jacob Louie. Taking the best officer role of them all, Secretary, is Aidan Todd. With the biggest shoes to fill, Zack Lewis will take over as Treasurer. And finally taking over as our Fundraising Chair is Joseph “Cugs” Cugliari. I should
also shoutout Raj Patel for once again being selfappointed to be our Social Chair. I hope to have a great year with a bunch of great dudes and guys. Another duty I feel I have is to shout out our seniors from this year, who are trying to go out with a bang. I’ll start with our fearful leader Myles “Gutta” Grady. Myles is a four year vet of the Alien Mountain Nomads, serving twice as Secretary, and this past year being President. Some say his Club Sports articles were better than mine, and that’s all up for debate, but the fact that they are 14

merely mentioned in the same sentence should be an honor for him. Up next, we now have our fearless leader, Zach Johnson. Zach Johnson battled back from injury this season, overcoming a lot to play with us this spring, and sat out there during those bleak practices in the fall. Our final senior is my brother, Caleb Louie. Caleb is actually a 5th year senior this year, and has travelled a lot to be a part of this team. As a five year veteran of this team he will be dearly missed. Thank you to all the seniors for everything you’ve done for this program and hopefully we finish out your senior season strong.
