WOMEN’S RUGBY Bringing Rugby Back Charlotte Murphy, Club Sports Representative
After a long and eventful summer break the Women’s Rugby team is back and never better! The club sports expo was a wonderful opportunity that allowed for incoming freshman, transfer students, and returning students to discover the several different clubs this university has to offer. Women’s rugby is just one of the many wonderful sports that is able to bring people together, and not just because it’s a contact sport. The whole motto behind our ream is that we are accepting of all types of people, and we welcome any and every one to come and be apart of our family. All week leading up to the interest meeting our team had a contact table in the student union with several returning members helping to recruit people to our team. Including our new pack and back captains Keiran Smith, Mandi Wise, and Leeann Smith. The beautiful thing about this team is that our members are hardworking and always ready to volunteer their time for the better of the team. That’s the reason we are always able to grow and improve each season.

Our first team practice was this past Monday 8/26 and it had a wonderful turnout with several young rookies excited for the new season. During practice the team worked on the fundementals like passing and communication. They also worked on conditioning with some sprints and a pendulum drill. All in all, this season is off to a strong start and the entire executive board as well as our captains are looking forward to the first game on September 21st at UNCG. If you are looking for more infomation on women’s rugby you can follow or Instagram page at aho _ wrfc or you can find us on Appalachian States club sports website.
WOMEN’S SOFTBALL A Strong Foundation Leah Renn, Secretary
As we begin our first season as a club sport, softball would like to express our sincere gratitude towards Club Sports and App State for the opportunity to continue playing the sport we love at a competitive level. For many of us, Softball is way more than just a sport, it is a huge part of our lives. Our founding members have proved their passion for the game by dedicating the past two years to building this team. “Being able to start, found, and get this program added to the Club Sports organization has been a blessing to me because it has allowed me to play the sport that I am so passionate about for a few more years,” says Senior Katie McEntire. We are so excited to welcome new players as well who have just as much love for the game as we do. Freshman, Sammie Kiefer said, “Softball has given me the opportunity to come out of comfort zone and to just be myself. I am able to walk out on the field and forget about my stress and just have fun.” Having an outlet like this in college is so important for many other students as well. “Without softball I don’t know where I would be. I have been able to make so many connections because of softball and I have been able to discover myself. It pushes me to improve and grow every single time I play,” says Freshman Mercedes Henson. Not everyone has the opportunity to play softball at the collegiate level, but we want everyone who attends Appalachian to have the chance to continue playing the sport that they love. Getting to play softball my freshman year personally gave me the community that I was searching for in college and that’s what we hope to provide for other students. Being competitive is also a huge goal for our team. We set high standards for ourselves from the beginning and this season we plan on winning even more games than before. We are scheduled to play teams who are always very competitive, but we are up for the challenge. Our season opener is Saturday, September 21st against University of Tennessee at home, we welcome any and all support from our community. We are looking forward to proudly wearing our App State jerseys and representing a school and organization we are so appreciative of.

WOMEN’S ULTIMATE New Year, Same Team Bri Hibner
The excitement and commotion of school starting up again is always something that the Nonads women’s Ultimate frisbee team look forward to. Fall is filled with immediately texting the group chat when you have landed in Boone town, followed by “WE MISS YOU, COME OVER ASAP” texts. As the Nonad team catches up on all of our epic summers we also get pumped about meeting new members at UREC fest and club expo. This year we killed the game and got 75 new emails and had a Huge turn out for our interest meeting. Thankfully weather was kind to us and we got to have our first practice on state farm fields Monday night. We had 30 new girls come out who all played their heart out and threw the frisbee like they have been doing it their whole life. The Nonads are excited to have our dear coach George back after he took a year off. On Monday he had plenty of drills planned included hucking Photo by: Casey Butts

drill, keep away and some scrimmaging making an effective and fun first practice. Our Captains Casey Butt and Magy llamas are stoked about our freshman outcome and look forward to the rest of the season. Our goals as a team is to have lots of half-time dance parties, encourage each other on and off the field and allowing our family to grow more and more as time goes on. If you are interested in the frisbee team and missed out at club expo and UREC PLEASE reach out! Our email is asunonadultimate@gmail.com and we practice Monday and Wednesday nights at 8-10 pm on state farm fields. As a team we look forward to the season ahead with our first tournament being in Knoxville Tennessee September 21st to 22nd. We hope our rookies are as stoked as we are to learn more about the game of Ultimate and to play with us. Peace and Love, Ultimate Frisbee Team.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE New Season = New Beginnings Samantha Pawlovich – Club Sports Council Rep.
As the year begins Women’s Lacrosse is excited to announce the beginning of our season of growth. We have worked hard over the summer and our efforts are starting to bear its fruit with more than fifty people coming to the interest meeting and more than thirty at the first practice. Women’s lacrosse club had an average of twenty members last year and to see the growth in the short amount of time that I have been on the team is an honor. As the new officers adjust to their new role, I am eager to see how the team not only grows in size, but how we grow together. One of my favorite memories was when we did just that: worked as a team. We had a play day with UNC Charlotte where we had gone back and forth on points. It was a close one. We had fallen behind in the last couple of minutes in the game, and in the last seconds of Photo by: Larissa Jenkins

the we had tied it up. Three to three. We went into overtime and came out with the win. None of that would have been possible if we had not cultivated our skills through consistent practice and rigor. Along with having the knowledge of how to pursue our passions as a team. We had become connected beyond simply being individuals in a similar space. That is one of our hopes for this year. To grow and evolve as a team. To share the feeling of joy and accomplishment that comes from moving past failures and reaching success collectively. It’s a new season and with that it is time to start fresh and begin our journey to becoming united as one. The past season is behind us and we are going to do all that we can to bring the team collectively into a shared sense of accomplishment and cohesion.
EXECUTIVE CORNER CS Executive Corner Alison Looney Wednesday, August 28,2019 Hello everyone! My name is Alison Looney and I am one of the five Club Sports Executive officers this year. I hope you are as excited as we are to get this school year started. The executive officer team has been hard at work these past few weeks preparing for the beginning of the Club Sports season. We have been brainstorming about how to improve Club Sports, getting team rosters ready, and prepping to meet the needs of each individual team. We also had four successful events in the past two weeks: Club Expo, UREC Fest, Officer Conferences and the first Club Sports Council meeting. Club Expo featured all 23 Club Sports teams where they were able to meet, mingle and recruit new members for their clubs. It was also a chance for the Club Sports executive officers to
introduce themselves and start working with their teams. UREC Fest was another great opportunity for App students to experience the recreation center while talking with our Club Sports officers and to learn a little bit more about UREC in general. Officer Conferences were a chance to pick up where we left off at Symposium last April to continue the conversation about policies, procedures, expectations and more. Lastly, we had our first Club Sports Council meeting on Wednesday, August 28. We were very excited to welcome back some familiar faces as well as new ones. We discussed highlights of the Club Sports program and the future of Club Sports. All in all, it has been a very successful start and I personally cannot wait to see where it goe
