ONE TEAM FOREVER BY: MADDIE MARCELLINO, PRESIDENT

photography by Jamie Baxter

The lady laxers welcomed Alumni back home on Saturday, November 3rd at State Farm Fields! We were very excited to see old faces and introduce new players. After starting our days with delicious muffins, we took the fields in what felt like “north of the wall weather.” Luckily, the sun made an appearance about half way through the game. The alumni went home with the win, but it was a very fun game to play! We hope to continue this tradition for years to come (especially the muffins).

semester, Emma Bouma and Jennifer Wade. We will miss you SO much. Planning for the Spring semester has already begun. We plan on hosting a tournament... confirmation pending. Come support! Our apparel for the first semester is being finalized. We plan on ordering yoga pants, short sleeve t-shirts, and headbands. Look out for some rockin’ lax apparel around campus next month! With the revenue from a Chipotle fundraiser, the Switch-Stick game, and family donations we look forward to getting more great clothes and playing in as many competitions as we can.

snowboarding

IT’S GETTING A LITTLE CHILI! BY: LILIANA RANGEL-PARRA, VICE PRESIDENT

The frosty mornings blow a brisk breeze onto my face as I walk through campus, and I am reminded of how it feels to be on the mountain yet again. Snowboarding season is rapidly approaching, and you can bet a lucky penny that we are itching for some snow! Until then, preparation for the ASU Snowboard team is key. We have our new shred squad! This year, we have a jam-packed team full of new shredders from all around the globe. Our full team roster consists of almost 60 shredders, with a racing and development team! Both opportunities allow anyone to enjoy the snow and the team energy. During the fall semester, we meet weekly or bi-weekly to catch up on the new news of the times, play bumper chairs, and get to know each other better. It’s the Chili Season! This past week, the snowboarding team and Appalachian Mountain Brewery got together to host a

Chili and Cornbread Fundraiser. It was an incredible time watching the team, a local business, and the entire community get together around warm food and good times. Thank you to everyone who came out to support both the team and AMB! We all had a blast. Recent Recess Updates: During these past weeks, the team had our annual Recess Clinic/ Sale Night, where the owners of Recess spend an entire night personally with the team, giving their great wisdom and advice on some incredibly awesome new gear. Supporting this local Boone snowboarding business is most definitely one of our favorite things to do on and off the snow season. Everyone definitely needs to go check out what Recess is up to! IT’S RAAAAAACE DAY!!!!! We have received our official USCSA race schedule, giving us insight into the mountains we get to shred over the winter. Mountains

include: App Ski and Sugar in NC, as well as Bryce and Massanutten in VA. Our first race day begins in January, so the team is starting to prepare in a variety of ways. Stretching is crucial. Water is life. Video clips provide inspiration. In addition, the team plans to meet up later this week to prep our boards at a wax partaaay! We get our boards looking smooth and sleek, ready to bomb mountains at a snowfall’s notice. All in all, the ASU Snowboard team has a lot of momentum moving forward into this season. The excitement and anticipation grows. As you may be able to tell, us snowboarders are ready for the snow. As other sports play rain or shine, we wait patiently for the temperatures to drop below freezing. Call us crazy, but there is no other feeling like dropping down a mountain, flying on snow, air, and spirit.

men’s lacrosse

THE LAX GANG GOES TO GREENVILLE BY: SAM INGLES, PRESIDENT

On October the 27th, the Men’s Lacrosse team took a road trip down to ECU for a round robin tournament against ECU and NC State. As per usual, the team stayed at a highest class hotel (Knights Inn) and ate at one of the fanciest restaurants in the area (Hooters).

photography by Kelly Ingles

The team started off their weekend Saturday against NC State in abnormally cold temperatures. The tough defensive unit, led by returners Michael Godwin, Sam Ingles, Samuel Agee, Ben Romanowski, Ross Parham and Griffen Glover helped fend of the Wolf Pack until ultimately succumbing to a two point loss. Immediately after, the Mountaineers took on the Pirates of East Carolina. Offensive weapons Sam Honchalk, Jackson Harris, Rhen Bumgardner, Conner New, Max Helmer and Johnathan Winbush pelted the ECU defense in a very close defeat. Overall, the men’s lacrosse team took away a lot of very valuable lessons from their road trip and look to improve over the upcoming weeks.

fencing

FENCING IN THE MOUNTAINS BY: MARINA CILENTI, PRESIDENT

This past weekend the App State Fencing team hosted our Fall 2018 Open! Our showing consisted of fencers from App, UNC Charlotte, and Clemson! Having a home tournament is an incredible opportunity for our non-competitive members to have a chance to be a part of the competing world, rather than just practicing with the team. This year, our team grew tremendously, but to have both competitive and noncompetitive fencers participate over the weekend was a great accomplishment. Saturday 11/10 consisted of both the epee and foil events beginning at 1pm in Quinn Recreation Center. Our epees showcased their hard work on point control which was apparent in the abundance of hand touches scored throughout the day! As a result, senior vice president Hunter Lee placed in 3rd! We also had new fencers such as Dana Baxter, and John Leppard compete for the first time, both

exceeding our expectations and taking coaching sessions to heart, applying our suggestions to their fencing immediately. After the epee event, our foils took the strips and showed improvement with each bout. For fencers Lucy Hester and Chandler Kaminski they had the opportunity to break out of practice and compete against other teams for the first time. Both of them showed tenacity, confidence, and great sportsmanship throughout the entire tournament and we couldn’t ask for anything better! The end results of the foil event consisted of freshman Drake Bogart coming in 1st place! Finally, the saber event dominated on Sunday 11/11 with 27 fencers participating! With a rivalry between the UNCC saber fencers and App State sabers, the bouts were intensified and exciting all day! All of our fencers excelled, showed support for both their teammates and the

other schools, as well as came out on top: senior treasurer Patrick Arsena took home 1st and freshman Ben Lockwood came in 2nd place! Overall, our tournament was a huge success! We always love seeing UNCC and were grateful Clemson could make the drive up to compete. Both teams expressed their gratitude and are looking forward to competing in Boone again next semester! Looking forward, our team will be focusing on improving our endurance and conditioning and are looking forward to our next tournament! We also plan to take a group to Charlotte over winter break for the January NACC to watch the Div 1 schools compete and learn from these fencers and coaches.

CYCLOCROSS STARTS AND APPS PLACEMENT AT NATIONALS BY: COLE JORDAN, PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR

photography by Cole Jordan

A lot has happened since the cycling teams last article. In the Atlantic Collegiate Cycling Conference (ACCC), App State were the conference champions as well as seven of our mountain bike racers going to nationals in Missoula, Montana. The cyclocross season has also started and the race in Boone has already came and went. While often smaller than other disciplines, the cyclocross racers are some of the most dedicated. David Burstein and Wheeler Davis have been to every race so far; along with Alex Casper, Kyle Kimball, Sean Hildebrandt, Brett Thomas, and Peter McPherson who have also been regulars among the mud of the courses. While we are only a few races in to the season, it’s great to see those few who are so dedicated to the sport endure the cold for the Mountaineers.

POST BLOWOUT BLUES BY: BRI HIBNER, SECRETARY

The Nonad’s hosted our favorite tournament, the Blue Ridge Blowout this past weekend and we are proud to say we placed 3rd! The tournament took place at Valle Cruises Park on both Saturday and Sunday. We played in some frigid and windy conditions, and beat Elon early in the morning then lost to Charleston and our alumni later in the afternoon. We didn’t let that kill our spirits and on Sunday beat an Asheville team, lost to our alumni, and beat Elon again to score 3rd place. Sunday was beautiful and sunny, a great day for ultimate.

As a team we would like to thank the amazing tournament directors/ our captains for putting together blowout. It was amazing and a lot of fun for everyone involved including players and spectators.

It was super cool to see all of the Oldnads and play against them twice. We have a lot to learn from all their years of Frisbee and we all look forward to Blowout to see our old friends and introduce them to our new rookies. We did release our rookies on an (almost) all rookie point against Asheville and they did great! It is always exciting to see how far our rookies have come in just one semester. The Nonads are hoping for a big turnout this weekend in Wilmington for Fall Easterns. The Nonads are looking forward to enjoying some sunshine and escaping the cloud that Boone is currently in. As our fall season comes to a close, we are very happy with how our team has performed this season and we are excited to head into our competitive season in the spring. It’s looking like another great year for App State Women’s Ultimate.

WE’LL BE BACK BY: ALISON LOONEY, SECRETARY

This past Saturday, November 10, was the first Women’s Club Volleyball home tournament of the season. The first, also last, tournament was held in the Student Recreation Center on the bottom floor on four courts. Since the availability of court space was abundant, we were lucky enough to host 14 teams including the five App State teams. We were very fortunate to have a such an enormous participation rate from other club volleyball teams from different regions. The teams that were involved as follows: UTK, GSU, High Point, USCB, Furman, Duke, Wofford, Campbell and Wake Forest. All of the teams were very friendly and respectful but came ready for some competition.

each pool played in the first round of tournament play. Wake Forest received a bye for the first set because they won all of their games from pool play. The other six teams who went into tournament play were App Nationals, UTK, Duke, App R2, High Point and App R1. The finals were played against UTK and Duke. Our club is very proud of all of our teams for competing, refereeing, helping clean up and helping keep things organized throughout the day. Although our season is over, we will be back after Christmas break with team placements. We will hope to host more home tournaments in the spring and cannot wait to be back in action, ready for another round of great competition!

I HATE TO SEE US GO BY: JACOB LOUIE, SECRETARY

Two weekends ago your very own Alien Mountain Nomads travelled down to the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina to compete against some of the best competition in the country. Both finalist were there from last year’s National Championships, and many other nationals contenders were in attendance as well. We may have been seeded 14 out 14 to start the tournament, but as we all know, momma ain’t raise not losers. We started the day off with a tough loss 12-10 to Saban’s boys, but came back strong with a universe point win against the boys from Greenville, 11-10. Tennessee had our number at this tournament and roughed us up a little, but even with those two losses, we went on to the winners bracket. The last game of the day was against Virginia, who was only a game away from nationals last year, and we came out fighting. Our offense got into a little of trouble before half as Virginia took a lead going into

half, and sadly we couldn’t make up the difference. Virginia won 12-10. Sunday we opened up our lines more, letting more rookies play, and playing different roles than people were used to. Playing against top level competition helped our boys grow and prepare for the spring. This past weekend we hosted our home tournament, Blue Ridge Blowout. Sadly, we were unable to convince any college teams to make the trip up the mountain, but we had a lot of alumni teams who were ready to play. The tournament was a lot of fun and a great way to fundraise for next semester. The Nomads had a good outing with a final record of 2-4 against some more experienced players. Our own alumni won the tournament, going undefeated against all competition. We finished the weekend with a scrimmage with our alumni team where we mixed the teams up. We got to learn about our

team’s history, and see old friends who had passed from the Alien Mountain Nomads. We can’t wait to play against them again next year at Blowout. I’d like to end this article by giving a shout-out to Patrick “Patty Ice” Arsena for reminding me to turn in my travel form for this event. You’re the realest. Stay Golden out there.
