EXECUTIVE CORNER BY: PATRICK ARSENA We are still at the beginning of the semester, MICs continue to slowly trickle in, and we begin to set our sights forward towards the end of the semester. Each Executive has been assigned a project to work on for the duration of this semester. The list of projects includes the Assessment, Officer Elections, Symposium, Banquet and the Budget Proposal. With all of us recently having individual meetings with Erin and Emily, we all have a better idea of what exactly will be expected of us. These meetings were especially helpful because we put together a timeline, which helps tremendously at keeping us on track. Now, we will always have a general idea about what stage we should be in at any point of the semester. Aside from our spring projects, life in the office remains more or less the same. I am especially excited in noticing a shift in organization from my teams, as officers all around are getting everything done unprompted. We recently had our second Club Sports Council of the semester, where we introduced the Council to the idea of voting new teams into the program. Council discussed what exactly it means to be a club team, and what to look for in a new club trying to make their way into the program. In future Council meetings, we are excited have more discussions like these to prepare them for potentially voting in new teams this spring!

A LOOK AHEAD BY: MICHAEL GODWIN, VICE PRESIDENT Appalachian State University Men’s Club Lacrosse team is just beginning their spring season. The Mountaineers will compete at the University of Tennessee on February 9, 2018 to kick off the 2019 schedule. The Volunteers are a MCLA DI Club team and will be an excellent opportunity to showcase the growing Mountaineers lacrosse club. Weather has been an issue for scheduling practice in the past weeks, however, this is nothing new living in the high country, and the team is hungry for a competition. A week after traveling to Knoxville, TN the team heads to Kennesaw, GA and Atlanta, GA for a long weekend packed 7
with three games against conference rivals Kennesaw State, Emory University, and division rivals Florida Atlantic University. This will arguably be the most challenging weekend on the Mountaineers schedule and will be a pivotal point in the season. The next time the team will play will be at home in Boone, NC at Appalachian State University’s State Farm Fields. App Lax will play a double header against conference rival Davidson and a debut game against division rival New Haven on March 16. The following weekend, the Mountaineers will play another new team on the schedule, Eastern Tennessee State University. The last competition for the 2019 season will take

place on April 5th in Charlotte, NC against UNC Charlotte and the University of North Florida, but not before traveling to play Wake Forest University in Winston Salem the Sunday prior. To say that App Lax is excited is an understatement. The Mountaineers have their sights set on the playoffs and are eager to get on the field and prove themselves. All in all, the Mountaineer Men’s Lacrosse team is looking good for the spring season. New members have been working hard and are eager to represent the Mountaineers as the season approaches, and the rest of the team has kept their sights on the playoffs.

KICKOFFS AND TUNE-UPS BY: JACOB LOUIE, SECRETARY A quote comes to mind when I think about your Appalachian State Nomads, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown.” That is why we decided to give the crown to UNC Darkside this weekend. Some may say, “Hey! Weren’t there 14 other teams between you and Darkside?” Sure, but we would rather see the joy on the other teams faces than experience it ourselves. Nomads are givers not takers. We travelled down to Chapel Hill last week to compete in the Carolina Kickoff. We started our day with a closely contested game against FSU. Some stuff happened here and there and then all of the sudden we ended 9
the week with a few losses to FSU, NC State, Temple, Duke, and Tennessee. That’s all I can say about this past weekend, but we are onto greener pastures this coming weekend. Once again your Appalachian State Nomads are travelling down to the Queen City, probably better known as Batum’s city. After the let down this past weekend at Kickoff, we are hoping to come back strong against some competitive oponents at Queen City Tuneup. We have a rematch with our rivals Tennessee to start our tournament, and then finish the day with Dartmouth, Ohio State, and finally with the defending

national champions, UNC Darkside. The boys from Chapel Hill aren’t ready for a scrappy and energetic team of mountain men. We are ready to have a dominant weekend against some of the best competition in the country, last year we came in and surprised some good teams and picked up wins. This year I would like to thank Juwan Howard for giving me our motto for the weekend. “We gonna shock the world!” To finish off the article I would like to shout out our Club Sports program for giving us some practice time on Kidd Brewer. We are pumped to get back out there this week. Thanks for supporting your Alien Mountain Nomads for another week.

DUBS AND SUBS BY: BRI-MARIE HIBNER, SECRETARY The Nonad’s enjoyed the 65 degree weather and sunshine all weekend in Chapel Hill competing in the Hucking and Shucking Tournament hosted by The University of Chapel Hill B team. Without holding any practices, tensions were high and players were nervous about how we would play, or if any of us could still throw a frisbee after a full winter break that lacked flicks and hucks. To our surprise, frisbee is easy to remember and our close friendship and communication allowed us to go 4 and 2, placing us at 3rd place overall. Over the weekend we defeated the University of Miami that flew up for the tournament, Chapel Hill B team, William and Mary College, and the University

of Asheville. In the games we lost, the Nonad’s played well and never gave up the fight. We beat William and Mary in a fierce first game 13-2. We followed that up with a more competitive game beating Miami 12-6. Then we lost to George Washington 7-12. The Nonad’s ended our Saturday beating Asheville 13-1 in some fun tired frisbee. We were lucky to get a first round bye. Some of us slept in while other did some homework and some yoga to wake up our bodies. We then came to the fields and lost to Catholic in a close game 1012. We kept our spirit high and beat Chapel Hill B team 13-8. In the placement game for 3rd we battled University of Miami again and beat them 10-8.
Outside of frisbee we enjoyed some killer frozen yogurt from the infamous Yogurt Pump in Chapel Hill, morning yoga at Rachel’s beautiful home, and half-time tanning. We came home looking forward to the season ahead of us and with a few rocking sock tans. We also couldn’t leave without a good old stop at Trader Joe’s to grab a yummy dinner and dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Looking ahead, our next tournament is in Charleston, South Carolina, our team’s favorite tournament. We are looking forward to improving more during practice and continuing to communicate well on and off the field. Next stop, regionals.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO BY: ALISON LOONEY, SECRETARY The Women’s Club Volleyball team has accomplished a lot over the past month. We had our team placements on January 24th and 28th and came out with three strong teams. We were excited to welcome returning members, as well as new members into the club. We have had three practices to prepare everyone for tournaments which will be coming up very quickly. We have attended Club Sports Meetings and are excited about the upcoming events that Club Sports have put together. We also have been practicing in the Varsity Gym this semester which is a change from last semester since we practiced in the SRC.
will be sending them off with all of our confidence that they will represent Appalachian State and the Women’s Club team in a way that will make all of us proud. As far as upcoming tournaments go, our Nationals team will be participating in an UNC Ranking Tournament in late February which will allow them to participate in the upcoming National Tournament. For the National Tournament, our ladies
will be traveling to Colorado on April 20th. We have another away tournament on April 6th where we will be sending Nationals to High Point University and Regional 1 and 2 to Elon University for our last away tournament. We will be hosting two home tournaments this semester in the SRC on March 23rd and April 13th, so make sure you stop by and support. We are very excited to see what this season has to offer our club!
We are very excited to be kicking off the season this weekend as we have all of our teams traveling to two different locations: Clemson and NCSU. We have our National and Region 2 team traveling to State where they will play teams from WFU, UNCC, UNCG, Campbell, Duke, VT, Elon, and ECU. Our Regional 1 team is traveling to Clemson where they will be playing against teams from Georgia Tech, USC, Lander University, University of Florida, and USC-Beaufort. AHO IS HEADED TO CHARLOTTE
WOMEN’S RUGBY
BY: KATELYN GOFF, CLUB SPORTS REPRESENTATIVE To start off the spring 2019 season AHO Women’s Rugby will be traveling down the mountain to the Queen City, also known as Charlotte. After coming back from winter break, AHO has been out and about campus recruiting new players and sharing our excitement about the game of rugby. With new players joining us for this season we have hit the ground running with conditioning on our own time and explaining the basic logistics behind this sport we all love. The captains and returning players are eager to continue to show and explain to the newcomers what rugby is and why it is loads of fun to play. The thought of explaining and demonstrating how rugby has brought all of these random people together and made us
one big family on and off the pitch gives me the chills and makes my heart full. It is great to know that there is a group of rugby players around campus not only here to play the sport, but also to support each other through the college experience. The team cannot wait to display this type of “family” atmosphere to the recruits throughout the rest of the season. AHO sees such great potential in the new recruits and cannot wait to see what this semester brings to the team. We will be playing UNC-C this Saturday, February 9 at 10 AM and are thrilled to begin our season.
