CORNER BY: PATRICK ARSENA With the annual Club Sports Banquet and Symposium right around the corner, this is a particularly exciting and busy time for the Executives in the office. Symposium is the first of the two, taking place this Sunday, and Executives are dedicating extra hours to ensure that time in the breakout sessions is spent effectively. We have asked team Officers from previous years for input and recommendations, to create a more efficient environment. This, coupled with the hard work of Ivy Wagner, Executive Officer heading up Symposium, will hopefully yield a more informative and fun experience for all. Additionally, the Club Sports Banquet is upon us, and we are super excited to introduce the teams and special guests, who help make Club Sports possible. Each team has selected an individual for Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player. These are important positions on the team, because it highlights an individual’s performance and effort over the last year. Also, we had each team submit three accomplishments from their last year of competing. As Executives, it will be rewarding to hear about the great things each of our teams did and how they grew the program.

COMING TO A CLOSE BY: ALISON LOONEY, SECRETARY As the school year started coming to a close, so did our season. Over the course of this season we had a total of three teams, each getting to attend three tournaments. Our teams traveled to Elon, UNC, Clemson and we hosted one home tournament. We are very proud of our teams this semester and everything they have accomplished. As we reflect on our season, we start to look ahead to Fall 2019. We have voted on new Executive Officers for the 2019-2020 season. These new positions are: Erin
Edwards and Alison Looney as Co-Presidents, Megan Treadway as Vice President, Alli Lobach as Secretary, Sophia Garmon as Treasurer, and Alayna Woodard as Club Sports Representative. We are hoping to start our Fall 2019 season off with new ideas, fresh faces and bring back some old ones. As an Executive Board, we are hoping to become more involved on campus and in the Boone community. We will be planning fundraisers for our club that will raise money to send our team to Nationals in the Spring

2020 semester. We are also hoping to get new equipment, such as new balls and jerseys for our expanding club. As a club we welcome anyone who is interested in volleyball to come and join us for our team placements in the Fall (time and date TBA). We will have a table during Club Expo and would encourage you to come out and talk to us. Ask questions and get to know our team! We would be very happy to give any information about our club!

A SENIOR SEND OFF BY: MARIA CILENTI, PRESIDENT This past weekend the ASU Fencing Team hosted their last tournament of the season. The team was joined by family members from all over the coast that drove up to support their children and our team. Along with ASU, the tournament consisted of teams from UNC Greensboro and UNC Charlotte. It was a great opportunity for us to meet up one last time this season with our favorite two teams. Concluding the Epee event, Ben Lockwood got 3rd, Ethan Fritz got 2nd, and Maria Cilenti got 1st and renewed her E. The result of the Saber event consisted of Patrick Arsena getting 3rd, Nathan Potvin with 2nd, and Ben Lockwood in 1st. Finally, the foil results were Cody Edwards in 3rd, James Kuhns in 2nd, and James Robbins from Charlotte in 1st. Aside from this being the last tournament it was also our Senior Night where the seniors were each individually recognized and presented with headshot pictures taken by future Club Representative Ian Lilliston. This year, the team is sending off 6 seniors and we’d like to recognize them here as well.
From our sabers, Emily Macdonald is graduating with a degree in Computer Science. Emily originally joined the team as an Epee fencer but quickly switched over to Saber after an event at UNCG. She tried Saber at this event to help with the number of people competing and after watching her first bout, we all agreed she would excel as a Saber. From that moment on she has improved every year and is one of the hardest working individuals on the team. She constantly asks the Officers for technique advice, drills to do outside of practice, and meets up with us for private lessons when she can. Macdonald was a crucial part of the women’s Saber squad that competed at SIFA this year and helped lead the squad to 4th place. On top of that, at this past tournament she unfortunately injured her hand, but chose to fence left handed for the remainder of the tournament. She astounded all of us as she went into DE’s and only lost by 3 touches as a lefty.

Also from the Saber team, Treasurer and Executive Officer Patrick Arsena will be graduating with his degree in Computer Science and minor in Geology. Arsena is a nationally rated Saber with his C2018 and has played a critical role in forming the team to where it is today. When joining the team 4 years ago, it consisted of 8 people and all were non-competitive members. When Patrick joined the team, he quickly took over the Sabers and assisted Maria Cilenti with teaching the team footwork and drills. Arsena is the sole reason there is a Saber squad at App and has taught every one of them all their skills. He has proven again and again to not only be an effective coach, but a personable and humble fencer. The remaining seniors are Epee fencers. First we have Ian Clapp who is graduating with a degree in Cellular Molecular Biology and a minor in Chemistry. Clapp joined the team after taking the PE class and wanted to learn more and begin competing. He works extremely hard at every practice and transitions his

knowledge to tournaments effortlessly. At this past SIFA, Clapp was losing 4-1 with 18 seconds left in his bout. Within those 18 seconds he managed to tie the score 4-4 and send it into overtime where he took home the victory. This is simply one moment that demonstrates Clapp’s unwillingness to give up and to improve himself with every bout. Next, lefty Epee Dante Otero is graduating with a double major in Industrial Design with a concentration in Furniture and Studio Art, as well as a minor in Marketing. Otero has been described as the team’s wild card because of his frantic fencing style. He loves to surprise his opponents, and his coach,
by being spontaneous and unpredictable. Dante works extremely hard at each practice and despite his hatred for conditioning, he’s always a team player and joins his teammates in working out. Aside from his great fencing, Otero is someone with a contagious smile. Regardless of the day he’s always a jovial individual which makes practice 10x more fun for his teammates. Vice President, Hunter Lee, is also graduating from the Honors College and with a degree in Computer Science. Lee, along with Arsena, is another person that has helped shape the team into what it is today. He also joined 4 years ago as a freshman with no knowledge
of the sport but quickly took to coaching from Maria Cilenti and became a second epee coach. Hunter has improved tremendously as a fencer over time and now has the best counter attacks on the team and some of the best point control among the Epees. In practice he is always willing to step out of drills to help coach his teammates which in turn makes them better fencers and him a better leader. As an Officer, he has worked diligently with the others to help facilitate all our home meets and maintain the organization of the team. Lastly according to Hunter Lee, “President Maria Cilenti is graduating
with a degree in Pre-Professional Exercise Physiology and a minor in Psychology. As the only Epee with previous experience, she taught the entirety of the Epee squad how to fence from scratch and guided each of them to become formidable fencers. As President, she has also built up the team in terms of numbers, reputation and skill and has fostered a legacy of leadership and camaraderie between the other members of the team. Maria’s skill as a coach and a fencer are without question but her ability to bring the team together as a family and help us all grow as individuals is where her talents really shine. Without Cilenti’s leadership and guidance, the team wouldn’t be where it is today. As she graduates and moves on to the next stage in her life, her legacy of hard work, passion, dedication, leadership, and care will remain in the fencers she has taught and the friends she has made for years to come.” This team is a family to one another and it’ll be heartbreaking to see these seniors graduate. However we are all excited for each one of them and can’t wait to see what they do with their futures whether that be as software designers, physical therapists, doctors, or even fencing coaches. Next year the team is left in good hands with our future Officers being Ian Brundige as President, Ben Lockwood as Vice President, Devin Frakes as Secretary, Caroline Gorman as Treasurer, and Ian Lillistan as Club Council Representative. Good luck and thank you for making this last year a memorable one!

CLUB SPORTS POSTER PROJECT SPRING 2019
The Club Sports Poster project was an initiative of the Executive Officers and Publicity Committee of the Club Sports Council. We were able to partner with Commercial Photography major and Sports & Activities Supervisor, Grace Puffer, to take the photos in the photo studio of Katherine Harper Hall. Grace exceeded all expectations on this photo shoot and delivered an incredible product for the teams and program overall. The individual pictures have been shared with each team’s representative and on Monday, April 29th at the Club Sports Banquet we will unveil the official banner and individual team posters. This project has helped us connect with each Club Sports team in a unique way and capture the essence of their team through the banner and team posters. And, after months of planning and preparation we are excited to share with you samples of the pictures taken. As you scroll through the following pages you will be able to see the team representatives from each Club Sports team and the foundation for our Spring 2019 Banner!!

FALL 2019
THE NEXT GENERATION BY: KATELYN GOFF, CLUB SPORTS REPRESENTATIVE As the year winds down, the Exec Board and entire team is intensely preparing for next year. We held nominations a few weeks ago and cannot be more excited for our 2019-2020 Exec Board. All of these Officers are hard working, determined, and ready to make this team succeed even more than we already are. Though our season has ended and we are done playing rugby for the semester we are still enjoying tossing a ball on Sanford and just hanging out with our fellow teammates before finals start. We are still all out
and about grinding hard in the library studying for finals and are going individually to the gym to prepare ourselves for the coming season. Once again, we would like to thank all three of our seniors for their hard work and commitment to our team. To our current President, Treasurer, and Back Captain, y’all have done outstanding things for this team the past four years. We couldn’t be more thankful for all the hard work you have put in on and off the pitch. Y’all will truly be missed, but definitely not forgotten.

As the year winds down, we are getting more excited for the upcoming year and are eager to get back on the pitch and play the sport that we all love. The future Exec Board is excited to see what the team can bring to this campus and to our opposing teams. We wish all others good luck on their final exams and hope everybody has a great, fun filled summer, and that everybody comes back to Boone ready to put in work again in the fall!

L
App State Club Softball was established November 27th, 2017 as just a ordinary club of 10 girls who all had a passion for softball. Starting out we played non-conference games against the University of North Carolina and from there we grew as an organization. We officially became a part of the National Club Softball Organization and from there we received our conference the “South-Atlantic West. Through our conference we have the chance to travel to different universities which establishes bonding experiences for our team. This 2018-2019 school year was our first official season a part of the National Club Softball Organization and overall, we placed second in the conference. Our team now consists of 14 girls and one guy who helps coach. We practice twice a week and play 3 game series against teams on the weekend. We welcome anyone who wants the chance to play softball at a fun competitive league and the opportunity to join a team that becomes family. We are excited to join the Club Sports community officially in Fall 2019! CAROLINE WILSON, PRESIDENT CLUB SOFTBALL
