FENCING
Summer Spotlight By: Lauren Brackett Public Relations Chair, Fencing Our teammates kept busy over the last few months doing lots of amazing things. This summer, fencers collectively visited a total of 10 countries, taught technology and drone camps in Raleigh, volunteered in physical therapy clinics, started graduate school, and much more. Read on to learn more about our summer highlights! Senior sabrist Alex O’Neill spent his summer in Bolivia and Peru collecting summit snow samples for climate change research. He is finishing his senior year at App and hopes to stay at ASU to pursue his master’s in physical geography with a focus on climate change. Senior epeeist Hunter Lee enjoyed studying abroad in Europe with the Honors College. His travels included exciting destinations such as Scotland, England, France, and Italy.
4
Junior sabrist Nick Bayne spent his summer taking summer courses at App and working in his family’s deli at home in High Point. Additionally, the team had a wonderful time celebrating the marriage of Tyler Stoudt and his wife, Megan! We love you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness together. With a fun summer in the books, President Maria Cilenti notes that she excited to welcome new fencers to the team. The interest meeting last Friday received record-breaking attendance and the officers were excited to begin practice on Thursday, August 30th. As a reminder, the fencing team does not hold try-outs. All are welcome to join at any time, regardless of experience. We can’t wait to meet you!

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Something’s Missing By: Alison Looney Secretary, Women’s Volleyball Volleyball has always been a way of life to me. Getting up at 5:30 am to workout with the team, seeing each other after school for 3-hour practices and sometimes going to team dinners. It was almost a 24/7 involvement activity, even in the summer. That changed once high school ended. It was almost as if a piece of my life was missing. Not really knowing what was ahead because the thing that had been most consistent in my life was gone, over, poof. Stepping foot into George M. Holmes Convocation building as a timid freshman during Club Expo was very overwhelming. Not knowing what to sign up for, having thousands of people to push through just to put your name on 20 lists of clubs you knew you probably would not join, but then I came upon the Club
Women’s Volleyball booth. Me, wanting to seem like I was a hot shot, wore an Appalachian State Volleyball shirt to show that I was definitely a volleyball player. I can remember a volleyball team rep complimenting my shirt and I immediately wanted to sign up. It was the fact that I was noticed; I was not just a face in the crowd. I felt genuinely included when putting my name on that email list, when going to the first open gym, when going to team placements. I never felt as though I should not be there or did not belong. After I finally got comfortable with my classes and started to learn peoples’ names at volleyball, I was shocked by how many people were in classes I was in or how many people I had common interests with. I never
imagined that I would make some of my best friends in Club Volleyball, but college is full of surprises. I never realized how much I would actually enjoy going to practice or traveling with my teammates to go to tournaments. I can genuinely say that joining the volleyball team was one of THE BEST things I have ever done in college.

TENNIS Tennis Anyone? By: Kylie Barnes Vice-President, Tennis The first week of practice for the Club Tennis team went very well! We had a great turnout of potential new members and an exciting first day of practice with great weather. We have a wide range of talent and personalities, which makes the team full of diversity and uniqueness that can bring a lot to the table, or the court. This year in Club Tennis will be an exciting, as well as a learning, experience for our new team and the new leaders. We have almost all new officers on the team that are sophomores and juniors at App State. Hallie Fite, a sophomore and a Nutrition and Food Science major, is the new official President of the club. I, Kylie Barnes, am the Vice-President and a sophomore double majoring in Economics and Sustainable Development. Along with the two sophomore officers are Emma Drake, a junior and club secretary, Tyler Froelich, junior treasurer, and Spencer
Daniels, junior club sports council representative. We have a very young team of officers but the dedication and commitment they have overcomes the years of experience they may lack. I, personally, am stoked for our new year. Last year was full of great memories, laughs, and new friendships and I know this year will be just as memorable. Club Tennis for me was an outlet for my passion of tennis and sports as well as a much needed social outlet. The people I met and the friends I made were all because of our club; our paths would not have crossed any other way. I believe club sports can have such a beneficial impact on a college student’s life by creating another world apart from academics where they can thrive and challenge themselves physically and mentally. As Vice President, I am most looking forward to encouraging my team to push themselves to be the best they
can be in all aspects on campus and watch them grow with the help of their new teammates and friends. I know from experience how much of an impact a team can have in someone’s life and I am so grateful to be a part of such a wonderful campus organization that promotes community, physical health, and leadership. Tennis is a wonderful sport and community to be a part of and I hope everyone has a chance to swing a racquet at least once in their life; I promise it is worth it. Tennis Anyone?

ALPINE SKI We Ski, You Ski, We All Love to Ski, You See! By: Mikel Smalle Club Sports Representative, Alpine Ski The Alpine Ski Team is excited to see the temperature cooling off, as this heralds winter, the start of another ski season. Based on the local Woolly worm tradition we are expecting a wonderful snowy winter. This will allow us to spend plenty of days carving up the slopes as a team and making new friends while enjoying nature. This year we are excited to welcome three new officers for the Alpine Ski Team, Mikel Smalle our Club Sport Representative, Kyle McCune our Treasurer and Ty Humphries our Vice President. Each of our officers are excitedly working to ensure another successful season. People have asked us what the Alpine Ski Team does during
12
ski season; we travel to various ski resorts throughout North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia to compete against other colleges such as NC State, Virginia Tech, and UNC Chapel Hill. Typically there are two different types of races each weekend, each of these races comprise of two runs and the lowest combined time determine the results. The first race is Slalom, which is a technical short course race, in which the skier makes their way through a different combination zigging left and right to the finish line. The second race is a combination of speed and agility. The course comprises dual poles set wider and further apart resulting in higher speed as the racer navigates through the poles

to the finish. the slalom race is usually raced on Saturday and Giant slalom on Sunday. To kick off our season we held an interest meeting Thursday August 30th at 7:00pm in Room 108. We explained all the aspects of the ski season, the various racier types and what to expect from us. We are excited to kick the 2018-2019 Ski season and look forward to meeting all the new ski team members.

MEN’S LACROSSE
The Boys are Back in Town By: Sam Agee, Defense / Secretary The Appalachian State Men’s Lacrosse team had a successful spring season that ended with a 6-6 overall record that propelled the team to the semi-finals of the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference tournament. There, the Mountaineers fell short to Kennesaw State 14-11. The team plans to use last year as fuel for this upcoming season to build off of the success of last year. This season should be one for the books as the new officers of the team are anticipating this season to be a new era of Appalachian State Lacrosse This year the team will be led by new officers President Sam Ingles, Vice President Michael Godwin, Treasurer Jonathan Winbush, Secretary Sam Agee, and Club Sports Council Representative Justin Blackley. This group of officer’s plan on making some important changes that will hopefully send the team to the top of the conference. This season the team will be playing against a broader range of teams to see how they stack up within the Southeastern region. The officers are excited to see what
potential and skill the incoming class has to bring to the team. Notable losses include Seniors Mikey Fifield, Tyler Valet, David Hayes, Jack Rich and Cole Eglowstein. These gaps give younger players opportunity to step in and fill these important positions. With promising newcomers and dedicated returners, the team is looking forward to competing this season. During the fall season the Mountaineers will faceoff against Wake Forest, East Carolina University Tournament, UNC Charlotte, along with a charity tournament towards the end of the fall season. In addition, the Mountaineers will be hosting an Alumni tournament on the 30th of September. Any alumni interested in playing is encouraged to reach out to President Sam Ingles via email at inglessd@appstate.edu.

WOMEN’S RUGBY New Year, New Recruits By: Hannah Koon Flanker/Hooker, and Club Sports Rep. After a relaxing summer for AHO Women’s Rugby, the team returned to the pitch Monday evening for the first practice of the 2018-2019 season. Old and new faces met as pack captains Melina Gonzalez and Chrissy Straub introduced rugby ball handling techniques to the new recruits and refreshed the memories of returning players. Their enthusiasm and positive energy radiated across the field and amped the team up for practice as well as what’s to come this fall semester. With a total of four captains this upcoming year, AHO is prepared to do a lot of physical and
16
mental conditioning in order to return to playoffs in May. Our fall schedule has been finalized with a few away games across North Carolina, and we’re also traveling down to Charleston, SC in November. Holding tradition, AHO will be hosting Rucktoberfest the last weekend of October in which we invite all women’s teams to come play in a bracket style weekend tournament of rugby. Hopefully this year we can avoid the chilly rain and snow we encountered last fall. AHO is extremely excited for this upcoming season, and the guidance we expect from our

returning and new captains this year. Roughly thirty ruggers showed up to our first night of practice, each with positive mindsets and patience. Rugby is generally new to all recruits, and the team works hard to prepare and enlighten every player on the logistics before the first game. AHO is prepared to conquer this year, and we’re all very determined to live up to the legacy left by our alumni.

EQUESTRIAN Jumping Ahead By: Kayla Gunter Club Sports Representative, Equestrian This fall, the Equestrian team is providing for a club filled with diligent riders, overall bringing more fun and opportunities to the team and Club Sports as a whole. Before the semester started UREC hosted an event as well as the annual Club Expo which offered a chance for our team to really display its undeniably flexible attitude and the positive aspects of the team itself. From 4 distinct disciplines of riding (Hunt Seat, Hunt Seat Competing, Dressage, and Western), new members found interest in at least one of them and further proved their curiosity when they showed up for the interest meeting on Wednesday Aug 22. Next, an Open House for Dressage and Hunt Seat at Foothill’s Equestrian Center was held last Sunday the 26th as well as an Open House for Western at Mimosa Hills on Thursday the 30th. Both of these events gave the new members a chance to show our coaches what placement they will qualify for at competition level, but also gives the new members a chance to meet the horses, other members,
and overall just get a feel for the atmosphere of the team. I committed to the equestrian team for the first time last fall because of my interest in horses and previous competing experiences. Quickly realizing that everyone was just as serious as I was about riding, I knew I’d picked the right University. I personally, was confident that it was something you have to put your heart into. A year later, I see that this was true and it has not only encouraged me to become a stronger rider but a stronger person because of the amazing bonds that this team inevitably displays. Our team’s initial goal is to provide a positive atmosphere based off trust. Expanding our knowledge of the horse world, as well as bonding with new members is proven achievable and will continue to strengthen each year. Overall, this team is a perfect escape from the busy college life and gives students an opportunity to bond with fellow classmates over the passion of horses.
Lessons are starting the week after Labor Day, providing that members are prepared for a lively semester. With this being said upcoming events are as follows. The Hunt Seat Competing Team’s first show is September 29th at Averett University. Our Western Team will be participating in a two-day show at SAU from September 29th through the 30th. Following, the Dressage Team will be competing at Bridgewater on the 30th of September. We look forward to a solid season and encourage anyone to come support our team, supporting yours in return!

MEN’S ULTIMATE And, We Back By: Jacob Louie, Secretary We’re back and you know what that means. Another year of great updates from the Men’s Ultimate team. I know many of you will miss the articles from Myles Grady, but I promise to do my best to live up to my mentor. With the first week of classes over it’s that time of the year for the first day of practice. We saw a lot of potential players at our interest meeting last Wednesday and it looks like this could be an exciting year for your Alien Mountain Nomads. With many returning players coming back from last years regionals qualifying team, we hope to build off of our successes last season. Club Expo was a huge success thanks to our fearless leader Myles “Gutta” Grady. Gutta attracted the freshmen to our sign up sheet, faster than
he attracted bed bugs to his apartment this summer and it was a great sight to see. With over 100 sign-ups we hope to see a gaggle of people out there this semester grinding. With the first practice Monday we saw a lot of potential in the rookies, and hope to help grow their budding talents all year. To recap the end of last year, the Alien Mountain Nomads finished 12th at regionals last year. Not the exact result we wanted, but it was a good place to build off for this upcoming year. We lost some Nomads legends this past year. Benj “Loves His Mama” Thomsen, Otto “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” Solberg, and Michael “The General” “The Ignition” Mckay are just a few graduated that come to mind. Although they will be missed we have to move

on. As Benji always said, “Don’t cry over spilled milk.” It’s a super exciting time of year to be at Appalachian State, and its been great throwing a frisbee on Sanford again and being back with the boys. I would like to end my article by wishing everyone a great year. Have fun, do your work, get good grades, graduate, get a good job, join the rat race, retire, and keep up with the Alien Mountain Nomads throughout that whole time. To finish this article I’d like to shout out Emily Walker. We’re excited to work with Emily in her new role and hope to bring back some National Championships to her.

EXECUTIVE CORNER Club Sports Council Update By: Sam Ingles, Executive Officer
The first Club Sports Council meeting of the year, took place on Wednesday, August 29th, was a success. Across the board, both the executives and the Club Sports Council Representatives conducted themselves in a professional manner and represented themselves and their respective organizations with pride. During this meeting the executives went over how council is operated, including attendance policy, how voting works, and how to motion for the introduction and conclusion of the meetings. Halfway through, the Club Sports Council split into five committies to discuss future projects for the upcoming school year. All in all, a successful first council!
