ARCHERY

Finding My Confidence By: Alex Bradshaw Public Relations Chair

As a kid I never had the best self-confidence, for I would always compare myself to others who surrounded me. That trait stayed with me through high school and into college. I have always been aware of it but I have never really tried to do anything to fix it. It should not matter what other people think of you, but we all know that in this day and age everyone cares about what people think. This all changed when I joined the Archery Team. I have been a part of the team for a little under a calendar school year, but I feel as though I have known these people for a lifetime. Each and every one of my fellow team members are unapologetically themselves. We all have our quirks, but we all love each other no matter what. I have never had friends like these before. I know that if I were to ever need anything at any hour I could call any of my team members and they would come running. Surrounding myself with so many uplifting and kind people has definitely allowed my self-confidence to skyrocket.

3

Developing as an archer has taken time and I am still not where I would eventually like to be. With each practice I am improving and growing into the archer I want to be. My teammates help me develop and encourage me when I feel certain things are not possible. As a team we have shot ranges that go from 20 yards to 120 yards. We have hiked many miles, driven even more miles and cheered for each other at every step of the way. Archery is not a common sport among most people and I am often asked how I got involved with it. Thanks to my best friend and boyfriend, Zach, we are able to do this sport together. But now I do this sport for more than just quality time with my boyfriend, I do it because I have a passion for archery. I do it because I have a strong and supportive team that rallies behind me with every turn. I do it because it allowed me to find confidence in myself.

EQUESTRIAN

Going for the Blue: Equestrian Kayla Gunter Club Sports Representative

The Equestrian Team is flying into this semester with ease. Thanks to our coaches and exec board, we have already made it through open house/evaluations, as well as the first two weeks of lessons! With that being said, we have over 20 new members as well as a majority of returning members. We would like to thank the Club Expo as well as UREC Fest for the new faces of our team. The newest addition to our team is our new farm and riding facility in Newton NC, called Walnut Creek Farms. Sarah Klassett, the Hunt Seat Instructor bought this new location and Hunt Seat decided to move over to continue with Sarah. Dressage is currently with Dana

Dewey at Foothills Equestrian Center and Western is currently with Crosby Reed at Mimosa Hill Farms. This diversity in riding locations is enabling our individual teams to grow and be stronger as a whole. We are now focused on the ability to train solidly for this first official month, in preparation for our competitions coming up fast. We are more than anticipating a glorious show season and can’t wait to see what our new captains, Adena Mangrum (Hunt Seat), Jess Reimer (Dressage) and Emily Barlowe (Western), have in store! Overall, the Equestrian Team is doing better than ever and we hope to continue this season just as positively as it started.

WOMEN’S ULTIMATE

You’re the Only Ten I see by Bri M. Hibner Secretary of W. Ultimate

This past weekend was filled with excitement as App State Football beats UNC making us the best football in North Carolina. What some diehard App fans may have missed was the Woman’s Ultimate frisbee team winning their first tournament in years in Knoxville Tennessee! With so many new rookies a squad of 23 girls rode across the state boarder to play their hearts out and learn zone defense on the fly. Not only did we take the crown but we also were undefeated beating Clemson 11-8 in the final game. In round play, we beat Belmont 13-1, University of Tennessee Y team 13-2, University of Tennessee X team 10-4, Clemson 10-8, University of Kentucky 11-9. Captain and official team “dad” Margarita Ann Llamas had 14 assists 2 of which being hammers and scored 2 points. Team “mom” and captain, Casey Lynn Buttskeroonski, had 9 assists and 2 goals. On top of everyone’s great game play we all got to go home with rocking sunburns from the 90-degree Tennessee heat, if you would like to support App frisbee, please donate bottles of sunscreen and aloe.

7

A new system we tried out this weekend was the battle buddy system. For each tournament a vet is matched with a rookie and works with them to answer any questions, give hugs after points played and cheer extra hard for each other. From this the team feels closer and our rookies don’t look as confused on the field. Looking forward, the Nonad’s are traveling down to Elon University to play in their Rumpus Riot Tournament. We are excited to see and play some of our fun North Carolina teams as well as hang out with the Elon girls post tournament. Our next home tournament is the 26th- 27th of October in BOONE!! Blowout is our home tournament played in the fall every year, one of our main fundraisers. We are stoked to see our alumni again, and play some of our favorite teams. If you want to come out to cheer on the Nonad’s (women’s) or the Nomads (men’s) please come out, Blowout takes place on the greenway from 10am -3pm both Saturday and Sunday. Thanks for tuning in, Go APP!

MEN’S RUGBY Men’s Rugby By: Ben Chapin Fullback The AHO Men’s Rugby team has an exciting year ahead. We have had two games this season, and we are currently 0-2. Although we’ve had a rough start, there are a lot of mistakes we’ve noticed that will be easy to correct as the season goes on. Our first game of the season was against one of our bigger rivals, Furman University. We traveled a grueling 3 hours to Greenville, South Carolina to play Furman on their home turf. We ended up losing, but the Furman rugby team was gracious enough to host a lunch afterwards on the field.

This past weekend, we hosted UNC Chapel Hill at State Farm field for our first home game of the season. The App State football team was playing against UNC at Chapel Hill, and after a long week of practicing, we felt prepared to beat the rugby team in Boone as our football team beat UNC in Chapel Hill. We played much better than the previous weekend’s game but couldn’t pull away with the win. This weekend we have a game at Eastern Carolina against ECU and it should be promising. We’re looking forward to a great season!

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Competition Update By: Alli Lobach Secretary

Volleyball season is in full swing now! All six of our teams have played in their first competitions of the year. On September 14, the Blue and Orange teams traveled to UNC Chapel Hill. They faced some great competition throughout the day, and both teams put in a lot of effort. The Orange team finished second in their bracket after a hard-fought 2-3 decision with Coastal Carolina. This past weekend the Red and Yellow teams took on the University of Tennessee and other schools while playing at UT Knoxville. The Yellow team came away with a second place finish in the silver bracket. The Green and Indigo

11

teams were also on the road last Saturday and traveled to UNC Wilmington. The both teams saw improvements throughout the day and look forward improving and growing with their teams. Our girls are excited to be working hard in practices as we get ready for our upcoming competitions. We will have two tournaments during October, one of which will be here at App State. Come out and support the Mountaineers on Saturday, October 26 at the SRC gym!

SNOWBOARDING Preseason Preparations By: Nicholas Bufano Vice President

As the cold brisk nights of October make their way into our fall semester, members of the snowboard team are reminded of the countless hours we spend shredding down the mountain. The temperatures begin to fall near freezing and the hope for snow is vast throughout our minds. The team waxing and sharpening kit has made its way out of the closet as we are beginning to prepare our boards for the season. We are scheduled to meet in November to add a fresh layer of wax on our boards to prepare for our high-speed slalom runs down the mountain. With over half of our team being new members, I am more than excited to get to know all of my teammates. Spending over five weekends together in log cabins throughout the southeast, I have come to find some of my best friends and the gnarliest shredders on the east coast. Having only snowboarded for a few years prior to joining the team, I was skeptical about getting involved so soon. Nonetheless, I can honestly

13

say that it was one of the best decisions I made in the beginning of my college career. The amount of practice that went into last season really paid off as the regular season came around. I saw loads of improvement and confidence throughout every team member as the season progressed and saw more and more top ten finishes at every competition. The team finished first place in our conference in Women’s Snowboard Freestyle and second place in Men’s Snowboard Freestyle. Hard work and good times surely pay off! I couldn’t be more excited for this competition season to come as I am eager to push myself and develop my skills even further. By the end of next season, I see our team not only improving as significantly as last season, but I also foresee multiple first place finishes. I know that adding so many new members to the team will only bring more variety of talent and I look forward to seeing others harness their skills as I have.

MEN’S ULTIMATE Back and (Hopefully) Better than ever By: Aidan Todd Secretary After a summer of kicking back by the pool and enjoying our time off the App State Alien Nomads are back. This year our new leaders Jacob Louie and Matty Mcdangles look to fill the big shoes left by Myles Grady and Zach Johnson as they look to lead the team to victory. besides our fearless leaders we have several key players returning this year. Alex McCleary and Raj Patel return in their last years as Nomads and they hope to leave an legacy that future nomads will hear about for years to come. Sophomore’s Caleb Owen, Haywood Ferguson, and Hunter Loftin all look to improve on their fantastic rookie seasons and hope to become key contributors to the team. This year we were also blessed with our new coach Sandy who will be with us for this fall semester. The man is one of the best to ever do it, he has playing for some of the best teams in North Carolina as well as representing the USA in worldwide tournament. His experience and knowledge of the game have been a huge asset for the nomads as we start this year. “The Sandman” as we call him has helped get the players new to the game up to speed on how ultimate is played. The rookies are not the only ones getting some coaching though as Sandy has finetuned the veterans fundamentals in order to push them to elite levels of play. Now for an update on what the team has been up to this year! We started our year out right with some heavy recruiting. UREC Fest and Club Expo provid-

15

ed us with great chances to talk to freshmen and give them our most persuasive speech on why they should come toss a frisbee or two. We must have been convincing because we had a quite a few freshmen sign up. A week after the bulk of our recruiting we held our annual interest meeting where we informed the young bucks on who we are and what a normal year on the frisbee team looks like. After that we showed them some sick highlights from years prior. Practice for the team began on 8/26 and the Nomads have been putting in work ever since. During these grind sessions on State Farm we have been going over different formations and techniques we will use to defeat the opponent, we have been running nonstop to get that conditioning up, as well as playing against one another in order to get that competitive spirit going, through all these different ways we have turned ourselves in to some pure “Gruden Grinders”. After a month of practice our team is hungry, we look to fill that hunger on the weekend of 9/27 as we are heading down to Charlotte for the first tournament of the year. There we will feast on some of the best teams in the area. These teams include, NC state who made it all the way to Nationals last year, as well as our rivals ECU and UNCC. The team has a long road ahead of us but if we play our cards right and continue working hard, I think this team could really go places.

WOMEN’S RUGBY

Game time By: Charlotte Murphy Club Sports Representative The moment that everyone has been waiting for has finally come. On Saturday September 21st, the AHO Women's Rugby team traveled to UNCG and played their first matrix match. The game ended with a crushing win of 67-0, but in the end, every player displayed fine sportsmanship and was grateful for the learning experience. This game had several firsts for our team, especially for the newer rookie class. Every player who showed up to the game was given a chance to see game time, and neither half resulted in injuries, which is what we love to see. Some highlights for the game included Marina Faillace making her first kickoff attempt in the second half of the game. Whitney Williams, Ashley (Chad) Dupalevich, and Emily Beauchamp were lucky enough to make their first try’s ever, which is huge in terms of their future rugby careers. The MVP of the game was a rookie named Murphy McConnell, who was very vital in keeping our line in order and knowing where to be throughout the game. Murphy leads

17

the line, and is one of the first people to get the ball and pass it to the other teammates, which means she always has to be ready and always has to know where to go. Despite this being her first game Murphy was up to the challenge and kept things running smoothly. All in all, after weeks of preparing and putting in hours of hard work, the team pulled off this victory allowing the season to start off 1-0. Everyone is excited to continue putting in work, especially our captains who are constantly working to find new drills and practice opportunities for the team. Overall, this season is starting off well and will hopefully continue to head into the direction of success. WOMEN’S LACROSSE Switch Stick Style By: Samantha Pawlovich Club Sports Council Representative

On Sunday, September 29 Women’s lacrosse will be having our annual switch stick game with Men’s club lacrosse! We are continuing off of what we developed last year and wanting to amp it up as each year passes. How the switch stick game works is that we play by the women’s lacrosse rules. But the fun part comes with the boys and girls switching not only stick, but their jerseys as well! The boys will have to wear the classic tank-top and skirt, whereas the girls will be wearing the boy’s traditional t-shirt style jerseys. To prepare for the upcoming game we have a practice with men’s lacrosse where we go over the rules and ins and outs of the our game. This gives both teams time to practice with the unfamiliar gear and get used to cradling with different sized pockets. Because sometimes the

19

boys do not realize just how hard it can be to keep the ball in a stick that has a much smaller pocket to keep the ball in. Whereas the girls have to get adjusted to the different sized stick lengths and the larger pocket. From knowing how much fun it was last year, we are proud to do it again this year, but added a few more details that would lead to better success for both teams. To create success for our teams we have turned the switch stick game into a fundraiser, so that we can have some fun and be productive at the same time! We have set up a Go-Fund-Me that will be split between the Men’s and Women’s lacrosse team. We hope to entertain our families and friends as the come to watch and enjoy this parent’s weekend. Come out and support us on September 29!!!

EXECUTIVE CORNER Club Sports Executive Corner By: Caroline Holland Hello all! My name is Caroline Holland and I am one of your Club Sports Executive Officers. Wednesday, September 25th marked our 3rd Club Sports Council meeting and it was a very productive council. The Executive Board is very appreciative of the participation and the great ideas that everyone brings to council. The energy that the Club Sports representatives brings to council has us excited for this year and we can't wait to see what will be accomplished and how we will grow the program. We continued to meet with our committees of Retention, Safety, Publicity, Fundraising, and Unity. Each committee worked on creating a charter to stay organized and on task for this year. A Chair and Vice Chair was established for the individual committees, they will lead

21

the committees each meeting with the guidance from an executive officer. After establishing the goals of the committee they worked together to establish a timeline of what needs to be done in order to achieve those goals. The individual committees worked together to determine communication methods, other meeting dates outside of council, and the execution of how they saw fit to reach their goals. They all are planning great things for the near future and we are excited to see those carried out and cannot wait to hear more at the next Club Sports Council Meeting on October the 9th. If you would like to stay up-to-date with all things Club Sports you can link to our Google Calendar via clubsports@appstate.edu.
