EXECUTIVE CORNER

Eric Horth

CAPTAIN ERIC As many of you may know, Eric Horth is new to Appalachian this year. He is the new Coordinator of Competitive Sports and advisor to the Club Sports Executive Officers. He came from East Carolina where he worked with the Club Sports program. Now, he graces the App State UREC Office with his presence. Many of you have met him at least once or seen him sitting in on meetings you may have had with your executive officer. He has certainly helped the officers out a great deal already. His favorite activity is to correct the emails we send out to our teams. He will always ensure our grammar is perfect before we send emails. In addition to making sure our emails are perfect, Eric also helps the executives with any paperwork we are processing as well as advising various procedures we are working through. Eric is currently overseeing the various budget point meetings being held over the week. He helps

us prepare for the meetings as well as supervises our work throughout the process. When we have many meetings in one day, we always know we can grab a snack from Eric’s snack drawer in his office. Grabbing a snack is always a good reason to take a small break in the office before continuing our work. As the officers continue to process paperwork and work through budget point meetings, we always know that Eric will be there if we have any questions or just need a little bit of encouragement. If you ever have any questions, always feel free to ask Eric! He works with each of us to better the Club Sports program to the best of our ability. Captain Eric leads the way and is always working with the executives.

PREPARING FOR THE SEASON With school starting and the winter season a few short months away, the Alpine Ski team is preparing to welcome new members to its team. We would also like to introduce our new officers: · President: Rebecca Purkey · Vice President: Ian Oliver · Treasurer: Morgan Baker · Secretary: Courtney Forbis · Club Sports Representative: Jonathan Gibson Starting in Mid-September we will begin to hold dry-land practices on campus at The Quinn Center. During these practices we normally play indoor soccer, racquetball, or any other team activity we can do at the Quinn. The purpose of these activities is to help introduce the new members to current members and make everyone feel comfortable with their new teammates. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Kosmala, also meets with us a few times for some in the classroom sessions about general style and technique of Alpine Skiing. This is a great experience for those new teammates who have never raced before. Dr. K also brings his Trikke Bike to a few sessions, and we get to play on that. This helps the team learn form and how to move their body to carve properly for Giant Slalom races. Even though all these activities are on

land, they translate easily to the mountain through muscle memory. We highly encourage ALL members to be present at as many dry-land practices that they can be so the team can begin to form bonds and get to know each other before the racing season comes. The 2015-2016 skiing season was a success for the Ski Team, despite the abnormal temperatures that kept most of the snow away until late December. With a total of 6 USCSA conference races, the men’s team placed in the top 5 and the women placing in the top 15 for every race. These winnings led the team to USCSA regionals held in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania. Vice President, Ian Oliver was our strongest team member placing third in slalom, qualifying him for Nationals. Unfortunately, Oliver suffered from an injury before the competition and was not able to compete. Being Oliver’s senior year, we can only be confident that this season will be as his previous ones. We are looking forward to welcoming the new members on the team and working to help them excel and deepen their passions for skiing.

WoMen’s Basketball

ON & OFF THE COURT The Women’s Club Basketball team spent their fall break in a few different ways, whether it was traveling or going home for a long weekend. However, all the various ways we spent break were to relax from the intense and action packed home tournament we put on for a few visiting teams. On October 8th and 9th we hosted West Virginia University, Clemson University, High Point University and Virginia Tech in Appalachian State’s very own Student Recreation Center. The tournament went very smoothly with fantastic sportsmanship from all participating patrons. We had a wide variety of volunteers to help run the scoreboard, and awesome help from the employees at the SRC to proctor the tournament and make sure we had everything we needed. The competition was fierce between the five teams and, however, The Virginia Tech Hokies finished tournament champions. Unfortunately, your Appalachian State Mountaineers were knocked out in the first game of our bracket play that took place on Sunday, October 9th. We used this time to reflect

8

on the things we need to work on and the team connection we have on the court. With so many new players on the roster this season, we are contemplating on the various ways in which we can improve the chemistry between members on the team and enhance the bond and perception of our teammate’s strategies and decisions. We had several supporting spectators and family members that came out to cheer us on throughout the weekend. Several mentioned that we had “undeniable effort” on the court and “a promising season ahead.” With this tournament in the books, we are beginning our preparation for a travel tournament to UNCG in November. We will continue to practice hard for the next few weeks and more importantly, spend time together and learning about each other.

HOME RACE

The Appalachian State University Cycling Team had its annual home mountain bike race the weekend of August 8th. Organized by the MTB Vice President Jordan Boulding, the event started off with a challenging and muddy single-track slugfest in the scenic woods of the Emerald Outback on Saturday. Sunday’s races were a little more local at our favorite mountain bike park Rocky Knob. Sunday started off with an uphill time trial that was a steady ascent up to the saddle of the trail. A short track XC race followed shortly on the exciting fan favorite PBJ jumpline. The day finished off with a super d that shared some of the trails used by the uphill time trial but in reverse. The sloppy, muddy course on Saturday turned in our favor with notable results including podium results from Miles, Annie, Riley, Matt, and Grady. Saturday was also filled with great results including Annie’s wins in every race, Miles and Zebs stellar performance on the time trial, Miles also got second in the short track to the current short track national

champion and many other results that helped us to win the ACCC overall title. A season long effort from racers in all categories helped to launch us into the top spot on the conference standings. After winning conference, the A category racers have a huge boost going into USAC Collegiate MTB Nationals hosted in Snowshoe, WV this upcoming weekend. The weather has predicted less than ideal conditions but with a loaded team of XC, Downhill, and Omnium racers the team will be striving to bring back a national title to Boone.

Equestrian

On October 2nd, App State Equestrian’s Dressage team competed at our first show of the season. Our small but mighty team of three left Boone at 3:30 in the morning to make the just over four hour drive to Bridgewater College’s equestrian center located in northern Virginia. Most people not involved in the equestrian “world” immediately think of jumping or western cowboys when someone mentions that they ride. Dressage is a unique English style of riding built on the foundation of total communication between horse and rider to perform specific moves and transitions that we are scored on. We are scored well if we exemplify correct training and technique, causing the horse to move with flexibility, strength, and gentleness. As a team, we are a part of the Intercollegiate Dressage Association and we compete with several schools from North Carolina and Virginia. At IDA shows, we randomly draw from a hat to determine which horse we will compete on. As you can imagine, riding a horse you’ve never met before can be a real challenge. When our time to ride is close, we get a carefully timed ten minute warm up and then go immediately into the ring to perform a test that we have memorized specific to the level that we are in. The levels include Introductory, Lower Training,

12

Spotlight:

Upper Training, and First Level, with required tests becoming more difficult the further up you move. The IDA system is a fun and interesting way to learn and grow as a rider, and a wonderful opportunity to develop the skills to adapt to new horses with different preferences in a short period of time. As a team, we had one rider in the Introductory level and two riders in the Lower Training level at this past show. After a long day of showing and supporting each other on minimal sleep, we managed to pull off excellent ribbons and scores and returned to Boone happy with our rides and proud to be Appalachian Equestrians. As the Dressage Team Captain, I couldn’t be more proud of my teammates who showed in the IDA for the very first time that day and handled the pressure with admirable sportsmanship. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of showing, it’s that no matter how you think you did, you get off, thank the horse for being your temporary teammate, and appreciate the amazing opportunity to sit on top of a 1,500 pound animal who is eager to do his best for you.

ROCKED SIFA LIKE A HURRICANE Despite Hurricane Matthew looming on the horizon, members of our competitive squad successfully made the trek to Atlanta last weekend for Georgia Tech’s annual SIFA tournament. Members from each weapon joined us on our trip and competed against teams from the University of Georgia, East Kentucky University, and several others. This was our first real tournament of the year, and it proved to be a great opportunity to gain real competition experience. Patrick Arsena, our lone saberist on the trip, competed with a composite team consisting of two saberists from the University of Georgia. As usual, his team was extremely successful and ended the tournament with 1st place in saber. Additionally, Hunter Lee, a sophomore épéeist, defeated every member of Clemson’s épée squad.

of the year. At our officer meeting, Patrick mentioned that our trip to Atlanta “helped us improve in the sport as well as get to know people from other schools”. Although it can be a bummer to compete on a composite team, it is always a great way to make friends and become more involved in SIFA. Thank you to Georgia Tech’s team for being such great hosts and for organizing the event. We are excited about our upcoming tournament this weekend at Virginia Tech, so be sure to keep up with our articles and Facebook page for more information!

ICE Hockey

Blair Huff

Next Stop Charleston Appalachian Ice Hockey is eagerly awaiting the weekend of November 5th and 6th. In just a couple of weeks, the team will uniquely play against two different teams in the span of two days. The first opponents will be The Citadel Ice Hockey Team, a very competitive group from the renowned Military College based in Charleston, South Carolina. App State Ice Hockey has faced off against The Citadel in the past and has always found them to be a team that consistently plays at the top of their game, making them an excellent challenge to better ourselves and push ourselves to the limit.

consist of running drills, endurance and speed exercises, puck handling workouts, and learning to work together smoothly as a team. Above all else, if the team could have one wish, it would be for an Ice Rink located in Boone. In the winter, the team has previously practiced at the small outdoor rink located at Sugar Mountain Resort. Being on ice, outside in the middle of winter in Boone makes for a chilly practice to say the least, but the team makes it work and appreciates the starry night sky above them as they skate. If ones things for sure, it’s that Appalachian Ice Hockey is ready to put in the work and take on the start of the season head first!

On the second day, the team will take on the University of Richmond, who have also shown themselves to be a successful team. The games will take place at the Carolina Ice Palace. In preparation, App State Ice Hockey has begun on-ice practices at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail North Carolina, just outside of Charlotte. On-ice practices

TOGETHER WE GROW Our lovely lady laxers competed in their first competition this past Saturday, October 8th against Western Carolina University at State Farm Field. We are so proud of how far we have grown as a team this season. The victory in our first competition is reassurance of all of our hard work paying off. The official score was 14 (ASU) to 8 (WCU). Transitioning was incredible, communication was clear, and our goalie was on fire. Vice President, Margaret Griggs, is very proud of how much the attack has improved so far. Obvious by an incredible 14 total goals, our attack successfully spread the field, worked through plays, and produced spectacular finishes. Secretary, Emily Edmonds, noticed how well our defense played in the game and is assured that after a few more practices, our defense will reach solidarity on the field. A focus in our practice has been on ground balls and this was well paid off! Ground ball retrieval very heavily influences the game outcome, and we killed the ground ball game this past weekend! Treasurer, Emma Bouma, said that “the game was great” and “transitions were beautiful!”

After Fall Break, we travel to Charleston, SC for our next competition on October 23rd. We will be competing in two games, versus Charleston and Coastal Carolina. Personally, I look forward to this away tournament because it not only allows time to play the sport we all love, but it gives ample time for team bonding throughout the City of Charleston. Officers have planned a team dinner at a local restaurant as well as made sure to give room for city exploration. As the season moves on and we continue to improve as lacrosse players, we also continue to grow as a team! The first themed practice of the season is October 19th! We are excited to rock the 80s theme this week for some fun before we head off to Charleston!

Women’s Ultimate

Ballers “We may not play with balls….but we have some ballers” This past Fall ten rookies joined the Nonads. Usually the sport of ultimate can take a hot minute or two to pick up, no one gets a solid forehand, or flick, their first try. Ultimate is a sport all about patience, hard work, and spirit of the game. These rookies have stuck with it, staying patient and working hard to improve their technical skills. These ladies are already great athletes, the majority having played a plethora of sports in high school, they just need to learn the technical skills and game play of Frisbee.

20

The rookies have really caught onto everything that George and the captains have been teaching them from leftie backhands to running a zone defense. They have been putting in hard work to become great ultimate players. If we can work hard as a team we can definitely achieve the goals that the we set for the season.
