EXECUTIVE CORNER

Chris Carr As the middle of the semester approaches, teams are beginning to get into a consistent rhythm with practices and competitions. In the Club Sports Office, things have calmed down a bit from the surge of MICs from enthusiastic athletes ready to get into their sports. Nonetheless, the staff remains hard at work to ensure that the calm is long-lasting and keep the semester rolling. The Executive Officers have been diligently working on their individual projects in order to improve the Club Sports Program for everyone, present and future, that are involved. I, Nikko Weeman, have been working through the forms and documents each team must complete to find ways to make them more efficient and generally easier to fill out and quicker to process. The other Executive Officers, Angena Lebarre and Sophia Twarog, are spearheading projects to get Club Sports more involved in the local community and with the student body.

Angena has been looking into ways to further incentivize community service to encourage the Club Sport teams to get involved around campus and the Boone area. She hopes that her project will help facilitate the connection between the Club Sports and the surrounding areas so we can grow and flourish together as a Mountaineer Family. Sophie has been focusing on the outward perception of the Club Sports Program. It is her goal to spread the word about all of the current teams recognized under the program and encourage the student body to learn about what we all have to offer. So far, she has been planning to work with the Campus administration to give Club Sports more of a presence to incoming freshmen and transfer students during orientation and welcome weekend. It’s our hope that our combined efforts will help the program become a more integral part of the campus experience for all of the Mountaineer family.

WEEKEND TO REMEMBER Our team has been practicing vigorously twice a week since the beginning of the season. We anxiously anticipate our tournament in Raleigh this upcoming weekend, September 23-25th , for the third year in a row. We will group up on Friday morning and hit the highway to caravan down to NC State. Luckily, a member of the team is native to Raleigh and we will crash at her parent’s house after a long day of playing games. We are scheduled initially to compete against Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for our first game on Saturday, which will begin at 11:15am. Afterwards, we are scheduled to play Wake Forest University at 12:30pm, and later UNC Chapel Hill at 3:00pm. These three games will conclude pool play and then we will move forward to bracket play on Sunday.

facet to maintaining solid defense is being aware of your teammates and knowing their movements ahead of time. In order to solidify this ability, we have been doing many team oriented drills throughout practice to help learn more about the girls on the team and their tendencies when manipulating the court. I asked president Erin Kane her thoughts on the team’s awareness and unified playing, “We just need to make sure we keep our heads up, and look down the court for options when making a fast break.” She explains in more detail that, “we can’t let our bodies get ahead of our minds. Often times the game is so fast paced, that it is easy to get uncontrolled and scattered, however, if the team can maintain control and awareness, we should have no issue pulling out the win.”

In the past, we have typically done well when traveling away to tournaments. The team does a great job of coming together through wins and losses, and using our mental ability to push through any roadblocks or poor playing. We anticipate advancing far into the bracket play on Sunday and hopefully we will come out as tournament champs.

We have a lot of new girls this year so I thought I’d ask them what they are looking forward to for this weekend. One of our freshmen Lyndsay Ellis said, “The thing I’m most excited about is playing competitively again. I wasn’t able to play my senior year of high school so it’s been so much fun to have organized practice again and I can’t wait to play in the games!”

We have several promising shooting guards that will carry our points throughout the weekend. Women’s Club Basketball Head Coach: Cole Husky explains, “If we can keep light on our toes when playing defense, we should have no issues staying head on offense. UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest are two very large schools, their roster’s will be high and numbers and very competitive.” We also have many smaller Freshmen this year who are very speedy and able to get back on defense when we need it; while still having some larger girls to pick up rebounds and defend the goal.

After all the practices we’ve had, Kaylyn added that she was, “looking forward to seeing how awesome we can be outside of practice during the tournament.” Another one of our freshmen, Rosemary, said, “I like club basketball because it allows me to be on an awesome team and play the sport I love!” I can’t wait for all these new girls to experience all the fun tournaments can be. The tournaments are a great way to get to know each other as teammates and as friends; this weekend is going to be a blast on and off the court.

Lately in practice we have been working on many offensive plays. We have utilized the motion rotation for moving the ball, and find several different options when it comes to get the ball off and looking inside for passes and ball movement. The most important

DOWNHILL THRILL The team took on the James Madison University Rocky Rampage race weekend in Massanutten, VA. This included the first Downhill race of the year. The race took place Sunday at Massanutten Resort, one of the few east coast Downhill Parks. In this race Hayden, Annie, and John took the wins in Men’s A, Women’s A, and Men’s B respectively. Jordan brought in the second spot on the Men’s A podium while Jonathan and Riley finished off a Men’s B podium sweep. After the downhill race was the XC race which included an extremely technical and rocky course. This type of course benefits riders that excel in leaping and bounding over rocks & obstacles. The first day of the race weekend Saturday held an uphill time trial and a STXC which is a short track cross-country race. The courses maintained the trend of being technically difficult and demanding. The results for all of the XC oriented events have not been published yet, but he crew finished with multiple podiums. Next weekend the team splits up and will be racing in conference at WVU and for those looking to take a break from all of the far away races, going to Lees McRae. WVU will have a similar schedule to the JMU weekend with beautiful but remote trails in the outskirts of Morgantown. Lees McRae, our neighbor to the south, has trails and terrain that some of us are familiar with and is located very close to our own home race.

Equestrian

The Equestrian Team was hard at work this past week, with our Western team coming in third place at St. Andrews! Not too bad for the first show of the season. Meanwhile, the team was busy organizing volunteer hours with Horse Helpers of the High Country. Horse Helpers is a local rescue barn for abused and unwanted horses run by an Appalachian State Professor, Amy Hudnall. With the help of volunteers, Amy takes in horses with no place to go, rehabilitates them, and sends them off to good homes. If these horses cannot be rehomed, Amy provides a safe place for them to stay and be taken care of. The Appalachian State Equestrian Team strives to volunteer as often as possible lending a hand to the hard working volunteers that already spend their free time out at the barn. Some of the activities the team members do include grooming the horses, cleaning out their stalls, feeding and bringing hay to the pastures, as well as aiding in barn upkeep. It is our goal to help

Horse H

Amy and the barn leaders in any way possible. While doing this we get to spend some free time with great horses who deserve all the time and love in the world. Two of Horse Helpers star characters are Hank and Chester. These two miniature horses travel around Boone often, spreading their cuteness and their sassy attitudes. These best friends can be found roaming the farm on nice days, chasing volunteers down for treats, and biding their time until they can be fed again. The Equestrian Team aims to have Chester, the small black miniature, to campus for one of our favorite events sometime soon in the future. This event would of course be “Selfie With Chester! – The greatest day on campus for those who love selfies and mini horses. In all, Horse Helpers of the High Country is an amazing cause and deserves more attention from students at Appalachian State as well as the Boone community. The Appalachian State Equestrian Team is fortunate to be involved with Amy, and all of her rescue horses.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN This coming weekend, some members of our team will be traveling to East Carolina University to attend a clinic. This is our first traveling event of the season and I think our new members are really excited to have this opportunity. The clinic will start with the very basics of fencing for new members and will also provide a chance for more experienced members to brush up on their skills. Our VP, Maria Cilenti, is looking forward to traveling this semester and added, “Our team is bigger, better, and has a promising future”. She has been hard at work making sure that all members have completed their MIC’s and can practice legally and safely. With the addition of so many new fencers to our team, we are looking into purchasing more electric weapons at some point during the semester. Our

Armorer, Sophomore Chandler Case, has been working diligently to repair broken weapons and keep our equipment in shape. We would definitely be in a bind without his help! Fencing pun intended. Even though it’s early in the year, some of our fencers have already started competing. Last Saturday, two members of our sabre team participated in the Knights of Siena Open in Matthews, NC and expanded our collection of medals with two big wins. Alistair Pitts, a senior, received first place in sabre; followed by our Secretary, sophomore Trevor Moody, who received third place in sabre as well. We are hoping to team up with Krispy Kreme or Come Back Shack for a percentage night soon to raise money for the equipment, so be on the lookout for that this semester!

Last school year, Appalachian Ice Hockey experienced monumental changes. The officers and members of 2015-2016 worked diligently to improve and grow the team, winning the Club Sports “Turn around Team of the Year” award. This was made possible by the dedication of those members who believed that the days of dwindling membership numbers and little to no campus-wide knowledge of the hockey team were in the past; the future of Ice hockey at Appalachian was here. At the interest meeting this semester, we were incredibly pleased with the sheer amount of students who turned up at the meeting. To our surprise, when we posed the questions “Who has played hockey before and who has their own gear?” nearly every person raised their hand. While experience certainly isn’t a necessity to join us on the ice, we were beyond

excited to be joined by so many Mountaineers who are ready to go out and play. This year, we are especially looking forward to being a part of the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference, and compete against fantastic teams including Old Dominion University, The Citadel, and Richmond University. As far as we can tell, the future for Appalachian Ice Hockey is looking like a bright one.
