EXECUTIVE CORNER

Catie Durbin The Executive Officers have been busy at work with the continued process of filing MIC’s and travel forms. During this process we have realized how many forms the club sports teams use could benefit from being updated and clarified. As Executive Officers we strive to provide clarity to our teams as well as continuing the positive growth of the Club Sports program. Due to this we take on individual projects to aid in the development and growth of the program. Executive Officer, Nikko Weeman, has taken on the task of improving the forms teams use and interact with constantly. Nikko noticed that many teams struggle with the same parts on forms such as the Medical Information and Consent (MIC) form and travel forms. He wishes to improved these forms in order to streamline the ability to submit these forms

accurately the first time around. Consistent mistakes the officers see is complete 911 addresses, missing insurance information, inaccurate emails, and missing or incorrect banner identification numbers. In order to make this information easier to get correct, Nikko is beginning to look into wording of the questions as well as specifics of the forms to ensure the correct information is provided. He hopes to gather more information to improve these forms. By improving these forms, it reinforces how the Executive Officers wish to help all the Club Sports teams. We hope to improve these throughout the next year and produce better ways for teams to complete these necessary forms. We love to hear suggestions and if you believe there is a form which is particularly confusing, please let us know and we will look into finding ways to improve it.

Four-year pla

Appalachian State Club Baseball kicks off yet another season with plenty of guidance from Clark Jones and Tanner Burrell, the only two members that have been a part of Mountaineer baseball for four years straight. Jones, a Chemistry major, and Burrell, an Exercise Science major, have not only grown closer as teammates, but they have also grown close as friends. It is typical to hear the two recalling memories from the past three seasons, whether it be something that happened on the field or off the field. Jones, who currently serves as team treasurer, is a strong-armed right fielder that also sees time as a

closing pitcher throwing at least one inning a game. “Getting on the mound, all the adrenaline and everything,” said Jones when asked about his favorite part of playing the game. “The last couple of years have been really fun, especially going on trips to Greenville and the Spring Break Tournament down in Florida.” Burrell started his freshman year in left field and has since moved around the infield playing third base, first base, and shortstop. When asked to describe his fondest memory of wearing black-and-gold, Burrell automatically brings up a homerun he hit against the highly talented East Carolina Pirates.

“We were down at least six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and I was up. I had an 0-2 count, 2 outs, and the kid threw me a fastball and I gave it a ride for a home run. After that, we hit around and we almost came all the way back, just within one run.” Last season, Burrell served as vice president and overlooked day-to-day operations. This season, he decided to take a step back from an officer position to finish out his senior season strong and help the young guys. “I’m looking forward to meeting all the guys and getting to tell them old stories that aren’t even related to baseball. Showing them the ropes and showing

them everything that I know and hopefully they can show me something that I don’t know. I can welcome them to ASU and get them started on their four years.” The Mountaineers kick off their 2016 fall season with a trip to face the Charlotte 49ers in a three-game series starting September 24.

WoMen’s Basketball

SETTING THE PACE The Women’s Basketball Team is off to a great start this year! We are now approaching our second practice of the season and have about 10 new players, primarily those being freshman. Luckily for us, we have seen nothing but hard work and good attitudes. As the season continues, we will work to create a uplifting and winning team culture. Often times, numbers are relatively low because the roster is, but this year we have about 25 members, allowing us to practice competitively and travel with a deep bench. We have set the pace at the beginning of the season to prepare for how many tournaments we have in the upcoming months. Right of bat, we have begun scrimmaging and running plays in order to be successful at our first tournament at North Carolina State University on September 24-25. President Erin Kane has lead the team in summer plans and anticipates success through returning veterans and our extensive incoming talent. Mark your calendars! On October 8th we will host our first home tournament and hope to have a large crowd there. We have invited several teams such as UNC, NC State, UNCG and more. The play will be competitive and we are hoping to have home court advantage and bring in the win. With so many new players, we are seeing a lot of guard skill. Although a few taller girls have joined the team, we have so many quick feet; the outside play should be extremely high. During our first practice on September 6, 2016 we were able to get to know each other better and experience fast paced game for the first time this season. As the only senior, I can say with vigor that the amount of talent coming in is very promising; and even better, I feel confident about this season as a rebuilding season, and our team being strong for the next four years.

of officers to lead the pack on this new journey. Jordan Cobb, Vice President, is a sophomore who has done an amazing job recruiting and leading practice. She has performed above and beyond in every opportunity to reach out and direct. Our Treasurer, Taylor Belorase, is a sophomore also, sets the tone on the court and allows the pace to pick up quickly, while opening up and creating paint down low for our bigs. Her efforts are always appreciated as she bring versatility to the game. Last but not least, our President: Erin Kane, Junior- she has been our point guard for the past 3 seasons. Erin has been dedicated to the club for three years now, and in the most intense year of accomplishing her degree, also accomplishes fearlessly leading our team. We have also brought in two new student coaches this year, and are quite excited about it. Head Coach, Cole Huskey, is a sophomore here at Appalachian. He has played competitive Basketball his entire life, and has already taken to the role very effectively and constructively. His Assistant Coach, Jesse, provides good feedback as well as he can focus more on our guard play. The two pair well together and are diligent about keeping us in shape but also looking for the smartest passes, plays, cuts, and boards. With only 6 returners, this year will be full of wonderful surprises and memories. We are anxious to get to know every single player and develop relationships on and off the court. As officers, we hope to service the team in a responsible way and lead the girls to success in hopefully, one of the most impactful outlets of Appalachian. The love for the game is apparent in every attitude on the team, utilizing that will be key for winning, and more importantly, friendship.

On a more personal level, we have a devoted group

RACE WEEKEND This past weekend the Appalachian State University Cycling team travelled to the NC State MTB race weekend. Due to large precipitation totals on the day before the event, the host team cancelled the first day of racing and merged the Short Track race into Sunday’s schedule of events. Riders from many teams insisted that this would make racing in the woods a brutal task. On Saturday the crew rode from our host home to a local mountain bike trail along Falls Lake. The trail was unrefined, but had a natural flow and was a great way for the team to bond and learn skills from one another. We were then treated to some incredible eats thanks to our host, the Millers. They would help us tremendously in getting prepared for the next day of battle. The day had finally come to do what we came to Raleigh for. The day started off with XC on an incredibly technical course full of large rock gardens. Maryann was our first racer to go out competing in Women’s B followed by the Men’s A with a stacked team of five riders, women’s A with Annie, and Men’s B including Zeb. Maryann pulled out an awesome second place. With the unfortunate flat tire of Miles in Men’s A, the team only got first and second with Byron and Hayden respectively. Annie also had an unfortunate flat tire in her race, and Zeb finished the XC results off with a win by a very large gap. The short track was also pretty technical with some exciting view points for spectators. Maryann pulled out another second place, then Zeb continued his successful weekend with another victory. Annie fought hard against a very fast field for another second place, along with Miles recovering from the unfortunate issues in the previous race to get another second place for the day.

working so hard at getting to the levels they need to be for IDA. First lessons are always crucial for our coach to determine where they will be placed individually.

It’s been great to get back into the swing of things, and help our new riders get acclimated during lessons. Our Western team has been doing great in their lessons in preparation for their first show, which is only two weeks away at St. Andrews! Corinne Bregman, President, and Savannah Mathis, Western Capitan, had a great first lesson and both are very pleased with how the team will compete this upcoming season.

Noncompeting team has grown more and more each semester and we are so excited to teach new members just how great horseback riding is! Some have never ridden before and are braving this new sport head on. Our returning riders are so enthusiastic to help with getting the horse ready or even just giving a barn tour.

Hunt Seat team is working towards getting the team together while placements for competing in IHSA continues. The first lessons are always helpful in deciding what division each rider is comfortable competing in.

We strive to end on positivity in every lesson, and create a therapeutic lesson program with our great coaches. Every lesson means something, whether it is a good lesson, a time where you learned something you didn’t know before, or if you jumped your first ever jump! Here’s to a great year and many more lessons to come.

FIRST WEEK OF FENCING Our first week of practice was a huge success! Tons of people stopped by our display at the club expo and it was really exciting to see such a great turnout at practice this week. While some of our new members are experienced fencers, many are not, so we’re excited to show them what fencing is all about. With so many new members, our practice routine is going through some adjustments to accommodate our different levels of experience. We begin practice with warm-ups and a conditioning routine, which usually includes wall-sits, push-ups, and various partner activities, followed by footwork drills. Next, we break into groups based on our chosen weapons and practice parries and techniques that are unique to each weapon. Lastly, if time allows for it, we spend the last portion of our practice free fencing, which is everyone’s favorite part. Free fencing allows us to gain confidence on the strip and execute some

of the things we do in practice in a real fencing situation. Later this month, we will be attending a clinic at ECU to help our new members gain some experience and see what it’s like to travel with our team. Additionally, we have plans to attend Virginia Tech’s annual Tech Open tournament in October, the longest running tournament in the state. I will be photographing our tournaments and posting lots of new pictures on our Facebook, so be sure to like our page for updates!

WoMen’s Lacrosse

OFFICER SPOTLIGHT President: Sam Yantz Our President, Sam is a senior majoring in Pre-Law with a minor in Sociology. Sam resides in Austin, Texas when she is not at Appalachian. She has been playing lacrosse since the first grade. Sam is a leader both on and off the field, as our president and our goalie. A favorite lacrosse memory for Sam was when her team went to the national tournament and came in second place; the experience was incredible and she played phenomenally in the goal! Vice President: Margaret Griggs Margaret, our valiant Vice President, is an attack(wo)man from Charlotte, North Carolina. She is currently a junior at Appalachian and is majoring in Exercise Science. If you’re ever in the dancing mood, ask Margaret to show you some of her Irish dancing moves! Margaret started playing lacrosse her freshman year of high school at Charlotte Catholic High School. Her favorite lacrosse memory is traveling to Charleston for a tournament as a part of ASU’s team. Secretary: Emily (Eddie) Edmonds Emily, known to her teammates as Eddie, is a dynamic defender from Greensboro, North Carolina (she went to the same high school as our treasurer, Bouma). She is completing her senior year at ASU as a Criminal Justice and Psychology double-major. A fun fact about Eddie is that she has titanium in her fingers! Her favorite lacrosse memory was during a game against East Carolina University, where the game went into a brave-heart and the team worked extremely hard to pull through with the win!

14

Treasurer: Emma Bouma Our treasurer, known by her teammates by Bouma, is originally from the Netherlands but now calls Greensboro her home. Starting in the Netherlands, Bouma has lived on four continents! Bouma is an Art Management and Studio Art major; this past summer she interned at the Weatherspoon Art Museum! She first played lacrosse competitively her freshmen year of high school. Her favorite lacrosse memory from here at Appalachian and is her fellow officer Margaret (Vice President) stumbling over her own feet (which is a habitual action on the field). We have a good sense of humor on the Women’s Lacrosse team! Club Council Representative: Maddie Marcellino Maddie is enjoying her sophomore year at ASU. She is a Philosophy major with a French minor. She is currently following the pre-medical pathway and hopes to go to medical school after graduating from Appalachian. Maddie is a defender on our team. When away from Boone, she resides in Edgewater (Annapolis), Maryland. A fun fact about Maddie is that she is obsessed with Chipotle and Harry Potter! Her favorite lacrosse memory was being able to go to England to play several teams across the sea.
