Dear Reader of As You electronic magazine, We are happy to present you the 10th jubilee edition of As You e-magazine. The working team of As You once again addressed the issues we and you are concerned about. In the section Sexual health Narine Nersisian, a doctor in the sexology clinic of the Medical University and an employee of sexology department talks about existing myths in Armenian reality, sexual education, existing problems and ways to overcome them. The Human Rights section presents the report on Human Rights Situation of LGBT People in Armenia 2013. The violations included in the report are widespread and cover almost all spheres of life. Family, educational institutions, healthcare institutions, police and military institutions are the main spheres where human rights of LGBT people are violated. In the section Gender we try to understand and find the pattern of how women are illustrated in advertisements in Armenia. Civil Society section refers to 13 years of activities of Society Without Violence NGO. The executive director of SWV Anna Nikoghosyan talks about the underlying philosophy of the organization, the driving force, challenges and measures to overcome them, and other issues. The inspiration of the 10th edition of As You is executive director of Our Bodies, Ourselves book on women’s health and sexuality Judy Norsigian. Society Without Violence NGO was founded in 2001 by Anna Arutshyan and Nonna Arutshyan, who are currently trustees of the NGO. The vision of SWV is to have civil society without violence, society where the country will be governed by people adherent to true democracy values, people who respect and promote gender equality, society where there will be no space for violence against women. Aiming to learn more about the organization, we have talked to the executive director of “Society Without Violence” NGO Anna Nikoghosyan.

- What is the mission of your organization? The mission of the organization is to share our Human rights skills and knowledge with others, to educate and inspire young women and girls to be active in the political, social, cultural life of the republic, to empower women and girls to become leaders, woman human rights defenders. Our mission is also to fight against violence against women and domestic violence and to empower women to know and protect their human rights. We are also trying to establish an institution of women human rights defenders and we want to recruit active women and women in our mission. - What lies at the core of your philosophy? Our activities are based on feminist philosophy, gender equality and respect for human rights and the struggle for democracy. Feminism includes all of these. By saying feminist values, we mean an approach where women play an important role and are aware of their role and are fighting for their rights. - What is the driving force behind your organization? Activism and unyielding spirit is the driving force, as stated a representative of Serbian Women in Black network, when one sees

any injustice, discrimination, prejudice he/she shouldn’t be obedient. Our slogan is to fight and be strong, no matter how difficult it will be. The other slogan is to feel the team dynamic that we are acting not as an individual but as a group.

- What difficulties you encountered during you activities and how you solved them? The first difficulty that we face is that people most of the time don’t have any idea what we are doing and they start to label us as “family destroyers”. That is why during our activities we are always trying to raise awareness about who we are and what we do. We are trying letting people know that gender equality is important and why is it important to have active women in all spheres. I can bring a lot of examples how participants of our trainings and workshops told that they were afraid and had very distorted ideas about what is feminism, gender and gender equality, but afterwards they understood everything and were regretting their denial. The other difficulty that we are facing is the distance, because we are visiting regions, villages close to borders, small cities and many times the taxi drivers are refusing to get us there because of the comfortless roads which are incompatible for driving. - What is the greatest achievement of your organization? It is hard to say which is the greatest but one of the achievement we had during these 13 years

Another achievement is that we are trying to make the gender education part of both formal and non-formal curriculum in Armenia. not receiving any accurate information provided in a competent form neither at home nor at school. The sex educator is a common profession abroad; those are the people who teach sex education. The sexuality is a very complicated theme and each word is important. That is why the sexual education can’t be taught by random people; there is a need for professionals. - When does the sexual education of the child begin? It begins since his/her birth. The child is learning and recognizing its surroundings, so are the sexual relations, which are part of that world. It is natural that every child starts asking questions even the simple ones; why are female and male bodies different from each other? The first educators are parents and it is important that they answer his/her questions in an accessible language and without lying. It is wrong to scare the child, make her/him feel ashamed, because those questions are not something shameful or wrong but they are very natural. If the child gets the basic information in a right way then her/his sexual education will continue with its normal path, and many problems simply will not arise in the future. - Talking about problems, is it risky to get treated in Armenia? No, it is not risky at all. In the sense of the practical medicine, the field is more advanced than in many other countries. There is only an issue with lack of professionals in the regions; for example there is only one professional working in city Gyumri and that’s it. It means the patients from the regions are forced to come to Yerevan in order to visit a doctor. - Are there any homosexual individuals that are addressing you? Yes, but contrary to popular opinion, they do not come to change their orientation. Mainly the hardest period for them is their self realization and understanding of their own sexuality. Unfortunately in homophobic society each problem of a homosexual person is being linked to her/his sexual ori-

This is a wrong approach, because each individual regardless of their sexual orientation can have depression, suicidal thoughts and many other thoughts as well as problems. - It is believed that people avoid visiting a doctor because having a problem related to sexual health is considered as something shameful. It is connected with the culture. We are a traditional society, because our nation is small. Small nations have to be more conservative and traditional in order to keep their identities. Nevertheless, those traditions are not stones and they have to change and adapt to the given era and lifestyle. Each tradition is a complex of phenomenas and rules. The virginity tradition is the same way, so, many years before young girls aged 14 had to be virgins in order to get married. That is for 17th century, but what about now? How many girls do you know that are getting married at 14? As a result we kept this distorted understanding of a tradition and we keep putting pressure on women who are 25-30 to stay virgins, which can actually become a health issue. By this tradition we are not keeping an identity but we are abusing and humiliating women’s bodies. Many this kind of distorted traditions are becoming a ground for many myths and stereotypes, which are bringing inappropriate attitudes towards a real and existing issue. - What kinds of myths exist in our reality? There are actually many myths and are not only common in our society but also elsewhere. One of the common myths in contemporary Armenian society is the myth of “Saint Mariam and the prostitute”, which means that women are divided into two types: one type is for pleasure, who men will not marry ever and the type that is for marriage, who are appropriate candidates as wives. I think this is only complicating our lives, because you can marry, love, have sex and children with the same woman without necessarily labeling her.

Every time I go to a beauty salon, no matter how I look they have always something very “important” to do about me, to make me look “normal”. If my hair is straight they need to make it curly and whenever they are curly they definitely need to be straightened, otherwise I simply look “unbearable”. The natural beauty we, as humans, posses, no matter which part of our body it is, hair, nails, skin, body shape, everything needs to be altered once you enter a beauty salon. “That’s simple” one would say, “that’s because the beauty industry needs to convince you that something is always wrong about you (all most of the things) and that’s how they make money. It’s business!” Yes, I would agree with that, but WHY, WHY do I myself go to these beauty salons and let them convince me that something is always wrong with my appearance and it needs to be fixed. And then voluntarily I pay them and go home, for returning after a week again looking and feeling “not good enough”. The answer, of course, is not simple and lies in many causes, and I would like to speak about one of them- the power of media and advertising. Advertising is used for selling various products and services to people, but most of the time it also “sells” a way of life, beauty standards, which effect how we think about ourselves and the world around. ness very often portrays images of young women in order to get people’s attention and sell something. And doing this advertising creates and strengthens existing gender roles and stereotypes, in particular the ones which portray women as beauty and sex objects with unrealistic beauty standards (very often with altered images of models through computer technology). Feminist researchers in different countries have discussed the problem that advertising very often uses traditional gender roles and stereotypes and portrays women in a limited way: either showing them as beauty or sex objects or as housewives and shopaholics. It lacks diversity of female portrayal: diversity of settings and location, occupation and physical features. To explore the advertising in Armenia and its portrayal of women a group of researchers conducted a research in summer 2012. Here are some key findings from the research: . 78% of female characters portrayed in monthly magazine advertisements belong to the “young” age group (below the age of 30). . Only 10% of women characters portrayed in magazine ads are of a “medium size” body complexion. . Only in 6% of magazine advertising women are shown in a working environment. . Out of 680 observed magazine advertisements there is only one advertisement where a woman is shown working in the office. . In Armenian TV advertisements we see more female characters belonging to the “middle” age group (30-50 years old), but still the number is quite small, only 20%. . In Armenian TV ads 15% of female primary characters are shown at home, while only 12% are located in the office. . 81% of examined TV advertisements had a male voice as a narrator, while 81% of female primary characters don’t talk at all. . Only in 8 cases the woman’s arguments were factual and concrete.

The main problems (from gender perspective) revealed when studying women portrayal in advertising are: Beauty objectification - the woman is shown only as a “picture”, she is not engaged in any kind of action, and is passively standing/sitting/leaning next to the advertised product and is showing off her beauty. Woman’s appearance is what matters most, and we don’t get any information about her work, career, character or passions. Sexual objectification - in these kinds of ads female sexuality is used to attract viewers’ attention and sell products. Female character is shown in revealing clothes, with seductive, inviting body language and face expression. Fragmentation - in these ads sexualized body parts of women are used to attract customers, such as lips or breast. Objectification - in some ads this “method” was used, when women were shown as animals, objects, parts of objects or pieces of interior. Women subordination - in many ads men are shown as dominant, as authorities, which is done by face expression (confident and secure), body language or role distribution, while women are portrayed as part of “men’s world” to satisfy them, serve and make their life comfortable. Housewives - often in ads women are portrayed at home, as if in their “natural place”, looking relaxed, happy, busy with housework, taking care of children and their husbands and feeling pleased with fulfilling their “main” function as a woman. Shopaholics - women are shown as if addicted to shopping.

So as we can see Armenian advertising lacks a diversity of images when portraying women: we don’t see women in working environment, shown as professionals, as leaders, active characters; rather women are mostly portrayed in passive manner showing off their physical beauty and no hint of any other association, such as a job, hobby, and passion. As it is said “You can’t be what you can’t see”, thus if one sees only certain types of women on TV, on billboard, in magazines, it shapes the view of what a woman can or should be in a certain way, which in case of Armenian advertising is someone quite passive and boring, to be honest. To alter the situation the research group came up with some recommendations on how to create a more gender-sensitive advertising, in particular: Advertising is an important block in the world called “media”, which tells us many things, among them “go to salon, and make yourself “beautiful” and if we manage to change it or at least see it through gender-sensitive lenses, we won’t end in a beauty salon spending lots of money and still thinking that “we are never good enough”. Human rights violations of LGBT people remained of much concern during the year of 2013. Violations are widespread and cover almost all spheres of life. a negative point of view, defenders of LGBT rights are considered as “traitors of the State”, and LGBT people are presented as enemies of the society. As a result, any sphere of social life is becoming a place for discrimination, degradation, and ill treatment and violence. The intimidating activities toward LGBT people and supporters are considered to be new challenges which were not countered in a comprehensive way. The statements of state officials contribute to human rights violations of LGBT people, creating an atmosphere of impunity. Despite being a signatory to several international declarations and conventions, the Government of Armenia has failed to address the issue of discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation. Moreover recent events showed that there is also lack of knowledge among the society and a failure in awareness raising regarding these issues. As a result, human rights of LGBT people as well as their advocates are being violated in almost all spheres of life. The report summarizes public and highlighted cases of human rights violations of LGBT people and subsequent events in 2013. More particularly, it sums up offenses of physical, other type of human rights violations toward LGBT people, the manipulation of LGBT issues through authorities during each pre and post electoral campaign, the atmosphere of impunity and lacking in access to free and fair trial, the legislative initiatives, engagement of Diaspora, recommendations from international organizations on LGBT human rights protection, hysteria around “Gender equality” law, LGBT people in different street and public actions, how media is covering LGBT issues, and homophobia and transophobia in general. The report states that in 2013 Armenia has clearly slid backwards as intolerant views were voiced extensively, and indeed prevailed, during a national debate around gender equality. Government officials condone violent attacks against LGBT people, characterizing the violence as an expression of “traditional values.”

Physical violence towards LGBT people The offenses of physical violence towards LGBT people are mostly bias motivated, i.e. are based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity of an individual. Mostly all the cases have been the result of initiation of conflict by the perpetrators, as an illustration of the “belief” that being LGBT is wrong, which has been accompanied by various forms of violence, including but not restricted to battery, infliction of bodily damage, violence through use of weapons, threats of use of violence, blackmail for not harming a person, harassment, etc.

Media publications often manipulate the news using a variety of strategies that can alter the readers’ perception. In Armenian reality, different media sources often make up fake stories concerning events to take place or about private lives of LGBT people in order to make social tensions and disruption, which creates an atmosphere of unease and tension for many LGBT persons. Comments on articles on topics related to LGBT are abusive, degrading and often include direct or indirect threats towards members of LGBT community, however, they are never moderated by the websites’ administration.

They could also possibly condone homophobia and transphobia, which contributes to a climate of hatred and violence.

She is an internationally renowned speaker and writer on a wide range of women’s health concerns, including abortion and contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, genetics, and reproductive technologies. - How did you get involved with “Our Bodies, Ourselves”? Through mutual friends, I met some of the women who had been involved with producing the first newsprint edition of the book and wanted to participate in the next edition by contributing a chapter on nutrition. I quickly became interested in all the other issues that are addressed in “Our Bodies, Ourselves” and it ended up becoming my major focus for the next 4 decades. The issues we addressed then (and now) are so important for women, girls, and families. - Were you involved in the feminist movement in the U.S? Not before I got involved with “Our Bodies, Ourselves”. I actually had little consciousness regarding discrimination against women and the rather vast problem of sexism and paternalism in the health care system. I do remember being offended when someone suggested that I shouldn’t have got the math and science award my senior year because another male student – who also happened to be a friend – might not get into MIT since he didn’t get the award. But I didn’t understand that remark as sexist—even my father told me to ignore the comment as “dumb.” Later, I realized that this was not just some random remark but an understandable product of a sexist society. - What were some of the challenges and struggles you’ve faced in the process of being involved with women’s health and sexuality? We live in a country with many double standards and even though images of sexual violence might assault us from many corners, it is still considered inappropriate to teach about human sexuality in our schools and/or churches. And there continue to be routine practices (for e.g. in the field of maternity care) that are not grounded in the best available evidence. So sometimes it is hard to share the results of reproductive health research because of resistance to more public discussion of this information, and sometimes it is hard to get airtime for a more balanced view of a given issue, when well-funded corporate interests have so many more resources to disseminate misinformation. - You were born and raised in Boston with a sizable Armenian community. How active are you within that community? I am currently on the board of the Armenian International Women’s Association. I assist a local Armenian playwright with her efforts in getting “Women of Ararat” produced on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. I am also part of a Jewish/ Armenian dialogue group trying to challenge instances of Armenian Genocide denial (especially in the Jewish community). - Can you tell me about some of the work you’ve done in Armenia? During my most recent visit to Armenia I participated in a panel on Promoting Gender Equity and Breaking Gender Stereotypes at the American University of Armenia (AUA), which was hosted by the Women’s Support Center, AUA, and AIWA. I presented a brief history of their book “Our Bodies, Ourselves” and how greater knowledge of sexual and reproductive health benefited the health of women and families. This book has been translated into more than 30 languages and formats across the globe, including Armenian.

There are many ways to travel, to see parts of the world you never thought you would go. I have never been interested in the idea of traveling for vacation. Traveling to sit under the sun, take a few pictures and then head home to tell all of my friends and family about the amazing places I have been. This doesn’t interested me one bit. What does interest me is the chance to go and live in another place, to have a human exchange that gets to the core of who we are as individuals. To share, and to see a different way of life, a different set of values, to learn what we all have in common, and to grow. And that is what brought me to Armenia. I am a quarter Armenian, and grew up in a city with very few Armenians. Because of this I did not know any of the language, nor the customs or the culture, and only small pieces of the diasporan culture (mostly involving food). But I do have an Armenian last name and throughout my life this has been a reminder to me of my Armenian heritage. I landed in Armenia this August, with my knowledge of what madzun was, lamajoon, and dolma, and about 3 Armenian words, all the names of my grandparent’s former or current pets (Anoush, Hoshor, and Sev). Over the past nearly eight months here I have experienced so many beautiful moments and yet one of the most vivid occurred in my first month here. I was living in Vanadzor with a woman named Svetlana. I spoke no Armenia and she spoke

no English. One day through some words I didn’t understand and a few hand gestures she asked me if I would like to go on a walk with her and her friend who was also named Svetlana. I said yes, then looked up in my dictionary for the word “when (Armenian: yerb)” and then I asked “now? (Armenian: hima)” Svetlana laughed and then responded “Ayo/Yes, we will walk now.” It was raining. We left the house armed with our rain jackets and a single umbrella. My arms were linked with each of them, one on either side. Together we walked, these two women in their 60s, best friends who live within a five minute walk of each other, both with children

As the sap eased down the side of the tree she pressed her nose in the hole and took a deep breath, standing there for a long minute. She then turned and gestured that I was next. I pressed my body against the tree and took a deep breath, my nose and throat was cooled by the smell of pine. Next, Svetlana, my host mother, took her turn.Taking her time with three long breaths. Then the three of us stood back and admired the tree, it was a moment impossible to put into words. Completely absurd and beautiful to me at the same time. We all silently thanked the tree and then we linked arms again and continued to walk back home. The rain had subsided, the ground was wet and the sky was grey with a brightness behind it like the sun may come out soon. At home we drank tea, ate walnut jam, sweets and fresh fruit. I have learned Armenian people want to be sure you feel good, these two women were no exception. They genuinely care that your feet are warm and your belly is full. Because of this I have learned that not only does it feel good to care for others but that it is vital to building a health society. I cannot count the amount of moments like this I have encountered in Armenia, moments where I feel so present, like this is where I am right now in this second and there is nowhere else I would rather be, somehow this is true in both the happy moments and the sad. Now, while I am saddened to be leaving, there is much I will be taking with me. I am now able to hold a conversation in Armenian although they often include hand gestures, maybe a few English words thrown in and of course laughter. I will be carrying with me my memories and new friendships. I don’t yet know when but I feel my intuition will lead me back to Armenia.
