Important information Although it is difficult to find drinking water on Kinn, you can buy cold beverages and snacks in the church, when the summer church hosts are there. We recommend bringing outdoor shoes that fit the sometimes wet and muddy trails. Because sheep graze the island, dogs need to be kept on a leash. Tents are to be set up west of the church. Remember the right of public access! There are toilets by the church. Defilibrator: Gry Seim, tel. +47 915 81 78

Hikes and walks on Kinn island Study the information sign at the quay before heading up to the arrow sign by the white house. Make a left and follow the coastal pilgrim path/ Sunniva path that goes over the tall mountain side “Høyskaret” by Kinn church. Along the pathway, there are QR-codes with information about the cultural heritage along the route. The view shows Heilefjellet by Førdefjorden, all the way to Atløy, Tviberg, Alden, Værlandet, and Bulandet in Askvoll municipality. Before the steep hill through Høyskaret, you can take a break by the Olav Tryggvason ledgel on the mountain side. This spot is particularly great in the morning on a sunny day. There is a beautiful view towards Ytterøyane and Nærøyane at the top of Høyskaret. During the height of the herring fishing industry in the 19th century, thousands of people used to live on Nærøyane. Today, Nærøya only has a couple of remains from foundation walls left. Follow the trail down on the north side and make a right around the mountain. After a couple of hundred meters you will arrive at the church. The walk is about 4,5 km and takes about 2 hours. The distance from the church to the quay is about 1.3 km, and is along a gravelled road.

“Søre Stauren” Hike up the southern peak of the clefted mountain. The two tall and sharp peaks are 221 and 196 meters above sea level. There is a marked trail from Høyskaret. Reaching the windy top of the peak, you will see the panoramic view to the islands and Kinn church. Walking back down, there is a trail towards a pond and down towards the ocean at the southside of the island. Alternatively you can return the same way as where you came from.

Høyskaret/Høyskarhellaren

2. Store Byrjehillaren 3. DNT-cabin. Cabin owned by the local chapter of the Norwegian Trekking Assosiation DNT open for rentals. The building was built around 1920 and used as a school until the 1970s. The cabin has 10 beds. Contact Signe Nordvik tel. +47 415 30 520 to book the cabin.

The small house by the church is most likely to be 150 years old. It was first built north of Florø, before being moved to a small island in Batalden. During the period of herring fishing around the 1850s, the house was again moved to Nærøyane north of Kinn. There were thousands of people who spent the seasons of herring fishing in fishing houses and boats. At the turn of the 20th century, the house, being the only remaining one on Nærøyane, was moved to Kinn. Today, the house is used for sacristy and as the living quarters for the church hosts.

4. Kinn Guesthouse /Pilgrim hostel has 10 beds/ 4 bedrooms. For more information and booking contact Gry Seim, tel. +47 915 81 178 5. Kinn church was build around 1100 and is the oldest church in Sunnfjord. The rood loft is from year 1250 and is the most preserved one in Europe. The church used to be the main church in Kinn parish until 1882 when Florø church was built. To this day, Kinn church is still used for baptisings, confirmations, weddings, funerals, and services. It is also used during the outdoor theatre Kinnaspelet. The church’s hosts can also give you more information about the church. The hosts volunteer all summer long, but it is expensive to keep the church open. The church welcomes donations. The church is open from 20th of June to 28th of August. There is a short prayer every day at 13.30 and 19.00 and the church is open between that. Kinn church welcomes everyone to join and participate in these services. 8 July: Seljamannamesse, 29 July: “Olsok” service.

Kinnaklova Walking around the island, most people choose to start by walking the gravelled road towards Kinn church, where there is a pathway towards the clefted mountain Kinnaklova. The first part of the walk is flat, but sometimes a bit wet seeing that you have to cross a swamp area. There is a trail up in Kinnaklova, but it might be a bit slippery. If you do not want to walk back down the same trail, you can follow the good, but steep hike down towards the ocean – the most beautiful part of Kinn! Do not continue to the left side of the mountain side, Geiteberget. It is very difficult to walk and climb through. Make a right past the wishing stone and the two Byrjehellarane. Enjoy a break with the view of the ocean, islets and skerries, and Ytterøyane with its 50 m tall lighthouse. Down towards the ocean the rocky islets are shaped by the rough weather, and this makes for a good place to make a short detour.

6. House of paintings consists of an exhibiton of pictures by Harald Seim. There are no set opening hours, but you can ask Sissel and Hermod who live in the white house to unlock the door for you.

The hike starts 200 meters north of the local boat quay (in the direction of the church). The trail is marked with signs to “Kinnafjellet”, and blue markings. The ropes along the trail can be very helpful at times. The hike is very steep at the beginning, before becoming flatter and more of an even slope. There are some slippery parts in the middle of the sharp incline. At the top, there is a beautiful view of the ocean to the west and the entire island paradise outside Florø. We recommend walking down the same way you came. Length: 1 km one way. Height: 315 meters above sea level. Time: 1 hour each way.
