Glorious Storytelling from the Atlanta Opera

Stories of suspense, love, fantasy, dreams, and nightmares are drawn from the greatest literature of all time to create the works presented by the Atlanta Opera in the 2023-24 season. The Shining with music by Paul Moravec and a libretto by Mark Campbell opens the season. Bypassing the famous horror film, the opera goes directly to the vitality and macabre ingenuity of the original book by Stephen King. The work is co-presented by the Atlanta Opera and the Alliance Theater (September 15 -October 1).

Come in costume or just for the campy fun of Frankenstein at the opera! The first movie (1931) made from Mary Shelley’s masterpiece of literature Frankenstein featured the famous horror movie actor Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster. Composer and conductor Michael Shapiro created a lush and vibrant score for singers and orchestra for this entertaining evening with film and music with one show only on Saturday, October 28 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center.

The mainstage operas of the 2023-24 season start with Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto (November 4- 12, 2023) in a Tomer Zvulun production. Based on a play by Victor Hugo,

this is a twisted story of a beauty and a beast that features some of the most recognized music in all of opera. Next, you’ll be engulfed by the strained charms of a bohemian life that turn heart-wrenching for the four friends whose lives are torn apart in Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème (January 20-28, 2024). We then turn to Shakespeare as he strikes deep into our dreams and fantasies as composer Benjamin Britten mines the depths of a whimsical comedy.

Rife with magical potions, mistaken identities, perplexed lovers, and more, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (March 2-10, 2024) features the otherworldly voice of countertenor Iestyn Davies in his Atlanta debut. The season closes with the epic second opera in Richard Wagner’s work of magnificent Ring mythology, Die Walküre (April 27-May 5, 2024). If you’ve ever wanted to encounter that iconic character of operatic legends, a Valkyrie, this is your chance! The legendary Greer Grimsley is the world’s greatest Wotan and he takes command of this powerful role on our stage.

The 2022-2023 Regions Bank

Broadway in Atlanta season will wrap up with three sensational shows at the Fox Theatre including the debut of MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL and the return of HAIRSPRAY and WICKED. Visit www.broadwayinatlanta.com for more information and tickets.

Enter a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur and glory when MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL debuts at the Fox Theatre from April 19-30. As in the film, MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL celebrates over 160 years of music — from Offenbach to Lady Gaga. The stage musical features many of the iconic songs from the movie, and also includes recent hits released since the movie premiered 21 years ago.

HAIRSPRAY is the story of 16-year-old

Tracy Turnblad in 1960s Baltimore as she sets out to dance her way onto TV’s most popular show. Can a girl with big dreams (and even bigger hair) change the world? Featuring the beloved score of hit songs including “Welcome to the ’60s,” “Good Morning Baltimore,” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” HAIRSPRAY visits the Fox Theatre from May 30 – June 2.

WICKED returns for four weeks only, July 5-30, and looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle.  Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emeraldgreen skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

Broadway in Atlanta has also announced that the Atlanta premieres of the four-time Tony Award winning MJ, the Tony Award® winning and 2022 Grammy® nominated SIX THE MUSICAL and the Broadway smash-hit musical BEETLEJUICE will lead the 2023/2024 season. Testing the Boundaries at the Atlanta Fringe Festival

The 2022 Atlanta Fringe Festival was hardly choreographer Hannah Myers’ first rodeo. “When I experienced my first Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland I was absolutely delighted to see the explosion of creative energy. Everywhere I looked people were performing, without any hesitation, in the most Avant Garde style.”

Soon she was bringing her own Avant Garde style to the Atlanta Fringe, in the form of a new mutli-media collaborative dance showcase entitled A Quiet Reflection Vol. 2. Employing a wide range of dance techniques, spoken word, and film, the show swung from whisper-quiet performances in full stage light to frenetic movement pieces under enormous projections and throbbing electronic music. In short, it showcased what makes a Fringe so… fringe-y. According to Hannah, “Fringe Festivals generate a non-judgmental, organic, open space for artists where we burst through the seams of the conventional world, whether we are invited or not.”

Fortunately, that invitation is extended annually to the local arts community and beyond, as the Atlanta Fringe Festival, now in its eleventh year, brings artists from

around the world to East Atlanta for one jam-packed week of live performances.

Founded in 2011, the festival uses traditional and converted performance spaces to showcase live dance, comedy, theatre, storytelling and more, using a randomized lottery to select the lineup. This ensures that artists of all disciplines and skill levels have an equal opportunity to perform, a cornerstone of the open-armed philosophy of community and art that guides the Atlanta Fringe.

The 2023 festival, taking place June 5-11, will follow in that tradition, featuring a diverse mix of first-time producers and seasoned road warriors performing everything from heart-wrenching dramas to magic shows in venues in and around Little Five Points.

This includes Hope Lafferty of CrashMat Productions and her “physical memoir”

INHIBITIONIST(!), utilizing clowning, dance, and physical theatre to tell the story of her childhood. It’s the kind of show that, as she tells it, can only thrive in the festival environment. “That’s why I really dig fringe festivals. Great emerging artists. Tons of it all at once, with something for everybody.”

A Thrilling and Inspiring Season is Unfolding for Atlanta Master Chorale

The sky’s the limit for Atlanta Master Chorale’s 2023-24 Season!

Audiences expect the unexpected from this sixty voice choral group, known nationally and worldwide for its versatility, confident artistry, and diverse programming. Next season’s lineup promises to delight performers and listeners alike.

Our season opens on October 13 and 14 with “The Sky’s the Limit,” a concert featuring music of endless possibilities. Join us for a program focused on looking up, stretching boundaries, and striving for more.

What are your holiday traditions? Many have incorporated our Christmas concerts into their annual celebrations with family and friends. Join us the second weekend in December as we celebrate the season. While some pieces will be familiar, there are always surprises, and the audience sing-along never fails to disappoint. Plus, tickets make welcome holiday gifts.

Next year’s spring concert performances on March 15 and 16 will bring to the stage This Love Between Us: A Prayer for Unity by the young Indian-

American composer Reena Esmail. Artistic Director Eric Nelson will conduct this complex choral work accompanied by sitar and tabla. Texts drawn from seven major religious traditions center themes of brotherhood and kindness. Ms. Esmail composed this piece on unity and light during the dark days of the pandemic. It ends with Rumi’s advice: “Concentrate on the Essence. Concentrate on the Light.”

We will round out the year with a return to simplicity for our season final concerts on May 3 and 4, featuring an entirely a cappella program: “A Capella Soundscapes.” This concert without instrumental accompaniment will showcase the chorale’s extraordinary vocal resonance and tone.

All performances are at Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. For concert dates/times, ticketing, and other information, please visit www.atlantamasterchorale.org Discounts are available for groups, seniors and students. And teachers can attend Friday night performances for free through our Tickets for Teachers program!

Alabama Shakespeare Festival Delivers Energy and Justice this Spring

Alabama Shakespeare Festival blasts to the past this spring with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley in Million Dollar Quartet. On December 4, 1956, an extraordinary twist of fate brought those four future legends together at Sam Phillips’ Sun Records in Memphis for one of the greatest jam sessions ever.

World-class actors and musicians will take over the Festival Stage with an electrifying score of rock and roll, gospel, R&B, rockabilly, and country songs. Get ready to tap your toes to your favorite jukebox hits, including “Walk the Line,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Hound Dog,” and many more. Million Dollar Quartet is recommended for ages 13 and up, making it a captivating show for the young and young at heart.

In May, ASF will produce Lynn Nottage’s Tony-nominated Broadway play, Clyde’s. Creating the perfect sandwich is the shared quest of the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff of Clyde’s, a truck stop cafe. While the restaurant’s mischievous

owner tries to keep them under her thumb, her employees find a purpose and permission to dream, discovering that “sometimes a hero is more than a sandwich.”

Clyde’s is full of laughs and insights into what it means to find and stumble down your path in life. ASF is producing it in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) and Arkansas Repertory Theatre.

EJI founder and Executive Director Bryan Stevenson will speak at the ASF Insights for Clyde’s on May 13 at 12:30 p.m. Please note that this play contains strong language and mature themes, so it is recommended for ages 17 and up.

KSU Dance Selects Two Eleo PomareGlenn Conner Choreographers for Summer 2023

Generous donation from Yunek family supports choreographic residencies, two world premieres

Kennesaw State University

Department of Dance has selected two international choreographers for the Eleo Pomare-Glenn Conner

Choreographic Residency in summer 2023. The Residency brings two curated choreographers each summer to KSU Dance to create an original work together with Dance alumni and students, made possible by an endowment from Jay and Debra Yunek.

The Pomare-Connor Memorial Endowed Fund for Dance honors the late benefactors who were luminaries of the dance world. Pomare, who passed away in 2008, was known for developing innovative choreography that deals with social inequality and injustice. The funds promote and preserve Pomare’s legacy through the cultivation of new choreographic voices.

Nicola Wills and Lior Lazarof have been selected as this summer’s distinguished choreographers and will create two world premieres to open the KSU Dance performance season in August. Marsha Barsky, chair of the Department of Dance, says, “We are thrilled to bring these incredibly talented choreographers to KSU

Dance this summer. The competition was fierce. The selection committee reviewed over 86 applications, spanning twenty states and six countries.” One of those countries with a strong showing was Israel.

Israeli dance artist Lior Lazarof studied in the Sadna professional dance program, located in Kibbutz Ga’aton, and she graduated from Ga’atonusalem Academy of Music and Dance in 2016. She then moved to Europe to further her artistic research. Her work has been presented in Poland, Spain, Czech Republic, Canada and Bulgaria, to name a few.

South Australia is home to Nicola Wills, where she developed her passion for performing a variety of dance styles. Nicola danced briefly with Dortmund Ballet, Germany, before joining the Ballet van Vlaanderen, (formally known as Royal Ballet of Flanders) in Belgium in 2013, where she was promoted to Demi-soloist in 2017 and is currently still dancing.  Audiences may see both world premieres in person at the KSU Dance Theater on the Marietta campus in August 2023. Dates will be announced (and tickets will go on sale) on July 1, 2023, at KSUDance.com.

Experience the Spirit of Hope and Love at The Historic Holly Theatre

The Holly Theatre in Dahlonega ventures on to complete its first entire season in three years, following a successful first half of the season. The Holly continues to showcase the regional talent in their 2022-2023 Main-Stage Season — “Hope Endures and Love Conquers All”, as they open their next show, the musical, The Spitfire Grill. It’s a story of new beginnings and friendship between three strong women told with folk-inspired music. Their season will conclude in the summer with Roald Dahl’s Matilda, the explosively funny, heartwarming musical about a zany girl genius and a set of quirky characters.

Amidst the new season, the Holly is excited to welcome Taylor Jarrard as their new Artistic Director. Taylor has been a volunteer at the Holly for 12 years and the Holly is excited to welcome her into her new role. “It’s a privilege to lead the Holly”, says Jarrard. “The rest of this season is sure to be heartwarming, filled with stories of hope, some familiar to us and some new, but all equally lovable. We’re excited to share the rest of this season with our audiences!”

(For show and ticket information go to hollytheater.com or call 706-530-5162.)

Aris Theatre Brings a Giant Legend to Life

Ireland is a land of many legends, and among them, one legend looms large. So large, it’s giant. And that giant is Finn McCool, a loveable rogue who is as likely to get into trouble as he is to make it. In one of Finn’s most famous escapades, he challenges another giant, Benandonner, to a slanging match. The problem is, Bendandonner is a Scottish giant…in Scotland. But a little thing like the Irish Sea won’t stand in Finn’s way. In order to reach Scotland and duel his nemesis, Finn builds a giant causeway across the Irish Sea.

The result of Finn’s legendary efforts is something we can still see (and stand on) today: the Giant’s Causeway, on the coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising tens of thousands of interlocking, hexagonal volcanic basalt columns. A geological wonder, the Giant’s Causeway is one of the most popular attractions in Northern Ireland today.

But what happens when Finn builds this causeway? What follows next is the stuff of legend and laughter, and the subject of a new play by Atlanta’s stage for Celtic culture, Arís Theatre.

Arís brings this magical, mythical

tale to life in their June 2023 production of The Legend of Finn McCool, written and composed by Arís co-founder Rob Shaw-Smith. This rollicking all-ages show is Arís’ first musical, and the songs are as entertaining and delightful as the comedy and the characters.

Arís has produced theatrical and literary works of Celtic origin and import in Atlanta for 10 years, presenting works from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, classic and modern, Brian Friel and Enda Walsh, George Costigan and Marina Carr, bringing to life Byron, Owen and Sassoon, Robert Burns and Leopold Bloom. And now, Finn McCool, the Irish Giant.

The Legend of Finn McCool is produced in part with generous support from the Government of Ireland Emigrant Support program through the Consulate of Ireland, Atlanta.

The Legend of Finn McCool plays at the Academy Theatre in Hapeville from June 14 to June 25.

The Schwartz Center: Don’t Miss a Note!

The Schwartz Center for Performing Arts explores how the timeless art of classical music can transcend generations with its 2023–2024 season. Beginning with up-and-coming violist Jordan Bak and the Balourdet Quartet, the mostly classical series also features virtuoso Midori with Festival Strings Lucerne, National Symphony Orchestra Ukraine, and a recital concert from violin protégé Randall Goosby. Intergenerational connections continue with the pairing of the world’s most famous brass group, Canadian Brass, with select Emory University student brass musicians included on one of the evening’s works as part of a concert ranging from Baroque to Dixieland.

“This season embodies the spirit of the Candler Concert Series,” says Rachael Brightwell, Schwartz Center managing director. “Our students and audiences have the opportunity to experience artists who are inarguably masters of their instruments—Midori and her violin, for one—in the same series as intriguing young artists like Randall Goosby and Jordan Bak, who are really making their mark in classical music. This season’s lineup showcases the best performances across generations, and I’m thrilled to be able to

bring such a dynamic series to Emory.”

The Schwartz Center is also proud to support new work as a commissioning partner for an ambitious, multi-composer project with Turtle Island Quartet, featuring compositions from jazz legend Terence Blanchard, MacArthur Genius Fellow Rhiannon Giddens, New Music USA Composerin-Residence Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, and Turtle Island Quartet founder David Balakrishnan. Additionally, contemporary works will be the focus of an orchestra of voices from the Grammy Award–winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer.

Along with the Candler Concert Series, audiences can enjoy the time-honored tradition of Emory Jazz Fest as part of the Center’s Schwartz Artist-in-Residence Program. The festival brings world-class jazz to the community with master classes, artist demonstrations, and concerts featuring the Gary Motley Trio, Emory Big Band, and a soon-to-be-announced featured guest artist.  Subscription ticket packages are available to order now with selections from the Candler Concert Series and the Schwartz Artist-in-Residence Program. Single tickets to all concerts go on sale Tuesday, August 1. For more information visit schwartz.emory.edu or call 404.727.5050.

Trailblazing

On June 18, 2022, the mayor of Macon, Georgia proclaimed Terrie Ajile Axam Day for being the first person to bring Modern-African dance to their town in 1980. I was totally surprised as I thought about the dancers that might have graced the stage of the historic Douglass Theatre when they hosted jazz and blues greats such as Bessie Smith, Otis Redding, James Brown, and more. I graciously accepted my proclamation. Later that evening, I began to reflect on my many awards and recognitions of “being the first.” In an Atlanta ShowGuide article in 2008, Pamela Turner stated that I was a “true pioneer.” I never intended to be a pioneer, but I realize I have been trailblazing for most of my life.

My biggest endeavor is my twenty years at the C.T. Martin Natatorium and Recreation Center. I was invited to create a pilot arts program tasked with bringing professional arts to the Adamsville Community. We presented classes, seminars, and workshops with a mission to train, produce, and present technical and creative dancers, performers, and educators.

Five years ago, the Atlanta City Council honored me as a prominent community leader, dance instructor, cultural arts entertainer, artistic director, and certified life coach for my commitment to serving

the Atlanta community. They acknowledge me as a history maker as the first person to receive a teacher’s certificate in dance. I can still remember the conversation. The Georgia Department of Education representative said, “You are the first person ever to receive this dance certification . When you go for a job, most principals won’t even know this exist.” That was in 1983. I subsequently became the pioneer dance teacher for Tri-Cities Visual and Performing Arts Dance Program.

My favorite trailblazing moments are creation of Mojah technique and the creation of three wonderful children. I gave birth to Chuma my junior year at Princeton University in 1971, Makini my Senior year at Princeton in 1973 and Kikora my first year in graduate school at Rutgers University in 1976. Now at 71 years of age, I am asked the question when are you going to retire. I simply say, I have more trails to blaze.

Summer Theatre Classes with Georgia Ensemble Theatre Gives Kids New Friends and a Creative Outlet

Kids are creative beings, full of emotions and thoughts they’re learning to express. That’s what makes theatre training such a great option for every kid. Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s Education Director Laurel Crowe knows that first-hand—she was a student in the very first class offered by the theatre in 1992!

Now, Crowe has helped grow the Georgia Ensemble Theatre Studio in Roswell, offering classes all summer for students from pre-K to rising 12th grade. For those who are serious about acting, dancing, and singing in musicals, Triple Threat camp will teach the basics and help kids grow from wherever they start. Improv and Mash-Up classes suit kids who love to invent stories and find the funny. Performance and Production camps give kids an intensive experience in creating, rehearsing, producing, and performing an entire musical. (Oliver, Jr. is scheduled for July 2023!) Brand new in 2023 is Influencer Boot Camp — a class that hones students’ interest in content creation for social media and video platforms, teaching them performance skills and video/editing techniques — but also addressing online safety and mental health.

Crowe says, “The goal of these classes isn’t to turn every kid into a professional actor. If that’s an individual student’s goal, we will absolutely help them pursue it. But for a

lot of kids, they take skills like improvisation and turn that into successful conversational skills. They take what they learn about using their voice expressively and turn that into successful business presentations. They take a class in lighting design and turn it into a career in science. They take the experience of mentoring younger students and turn it into a teaching career. And they take the teamwork and empathy that all theatre requires, and turn them into new friendships, stronger interpersonal relationships, and a sense of connectedness with the world around them.”

Students who spend a week or two — or even their whole summer — at GET Studio get to be around other creative kids like themselves all day. They’re forming new friendships with people outside of their schools, connecting with people who have shared interests. Summer camps at GET are educational and entertaining, led by professional actors and directors, supportive, inclusive, welcoming, accessible…but most of all, FUN!

GET Studio classes offer payment plans and financial aid. Students of differing abilities are welcome. Anyone with questions is urged to reach out to education@get.org or view the available camp sessions at get.org/classes.

Stage Door Players — An Interview with Lauren Morris

Interviewed by Joey Davila

So Lauren, why Peter and the Starcatcher?

“I have loved this play since I first became aware of it. I love that it is theatre at its most simple AND most imaginative. I love that it’s about children and childhood and the fact that we are all really at our

Just the fact that we, within us, have the ability to surprise and delight each other is the core of what magic and what theatre can do.

core, just tall children. I love that there’s magic and it reminds us that magic is real and possible if we remember that magic is real and possible. I also really like that it has fabulous villains because that’s really fun. And ours will be extra fabulous.”

It must be a challenge to do a story that has so many famous iterations. Do you have a favorite iteration of the Peter Pan story?

“I’m reading the novel version of Peter and the Starcatcher and it really explores a lot more darkness of the characters and exploration of who they are, how they got there, and human nature.”

So I’ve got to ask because I’ve been so curious: What is a Starcatcher?

“Starcatchers try to keep humans from being completely engulfed by the devils on their shoulders, by the darker nature.”

You mentioned magic earlier. What is theatre magic, to you? Is there a base requirement, or a specific example you can think of?

“I have so many things in my head when I think of theatre magic, but I think surprise and delight is all that magic is to me. I think there’s something deeply elemental in us that’s about us as animals who sat around a campfire and told stories a million years ago. There are little bits of us that are awakened at simple moments like that. That’s why I think shadow puppetry is magical and why we’ll be using that in this production. Just the fact that we, within us, have the ability to surprise and delight each other is the core of what magic and what theatre can do. It comes down to breath, the physical shared molecules in a space.”
