CHAMPIONSHIP REGULATIONS
FORMAT
The Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Championship is a single-elimination championship involving the 15 conference members. Seeds are determined by regular season conference standings according to final overall conference records and the tiebreaking formula, if necessary.
TIE-BREAKING FORMULA
The following tie-breaking format is utilized for determine seeding.
TWO-TEAM TIE
1. Head-to-head competition.
2. Conference record of the tied teams based on winning percentage versus the highest common opponent and proceeding down to the lowest common opponent, if necessary, until one team gains an advantage.
a. All ties are broken in descending order.
b. When arriving at another pair of tied teams, use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group. When comparing records against a group of teams, the higher winning percentage will prevail. In case of tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000, the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
3. Coin toss.
THREE OR MORE TEAMS TIE
1. Head-to-head competition. Use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than performance against individual teams. When comparing records against a group of teams, the higher winning percentage will prevail. In case of tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000, the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
2. If the above results in two teams remaining, the two-team tiebreaker is used.
3. If more than two teams still remain, use the Conference record of the tied teams based on winning percentage versus the highest common opponent and proceeding down to the lowest common opponent, if necessary, until one team gains an advantage.
4. Draw lots.
NOTE: All ties will be broken in descending order. When arriving at another pair of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than the performance against individual tied teams. Once ties are broken, they remain broken throughout the tiebreaker process.
SEEDING (Reconfirmed for the 2023 Championship at Athletic Director briefing call on Dec. 12, 2022)
The Atlantic 10 will use a hybrid seeding procedure for seeding the 2023 Women’s Basketball Championship.
- The league will use straight winning percentage as the overall procedure unless the average number of games completed by all teams falls to or below 12 games for women’s basketball (which is 75% of a 16-game schedule).
- If the average number of games completed by each team falls to or below or 12, the league automatically shifts to the KenPom adjusted winning percentage overall procedure. Projected decision date for the shift would be on or about Feb. 22.
- Existing tiebreakers will be utilized, regardless of which model is used.
- In both methods, there will be a threshold of four games below the average number of games completed to qualify for the double-bye (top four seed) AND win the regular season championship. If a team does not play enough games, the highest it could be seeded would be fifth.
- The chart below dictates how many games are needed to be eligible for a regular season title and double-bye/top four seed.

A student-athlete may use athletics equipment or wear athletics apparel that bears the trademark or logo of an athletics equipment or apparel manufacturer or distributor in athletics competition and pre- and postgame activities (e.g., celebrations on the court, preor postgame press conferences), provided the following criteria are met:
- Athletics equipment (e.g., shoes, helmets, baseball bats and gloves, batting or golf gloves, hockey and lacrosse sticks, goggles and skis) shall bear only the manufacturer’s normal label or trademark, as it is used on all such items for sale to the general public; and

The student-athlete’s institution’s official uniform and all other items of apparel shall not bear a design element similar to the manufacturer’s trademark/logo that is in addition to another trademark/logo that is contrary to the size restriction.
It is impermissible under NCAA Interim Policy/Rules to allow student-athletes to promote their NIL activity while on call for required athletically related activities (e.g. practice, pre- and postgame activities, celebrations on the court, press conferences). (Per NCAA Division I NIL memorandum, Oct. 26, 2022).
SPORTS WAGERING
Sports wagering includes placing, accepting or soliciting a wager (on a staff member’s or student-athlete’s own behalf or on the behalf of others) of any type with any individual or organization on any intercollegiate, amateur or professional team or contest. Examples of sports wagering include, but are not limited to, the use of a bookmaker or parlay card; internet sports wagering; mobile betting; auctions in which bids are placed on teams, individuals or contests; and pools or fantasy leagues in which an entry fee is required and there is an opportunity to win a prize.
The current NCAA legislation against sports wagering prohibits NCAA student-athletes, member institutions’ athletics staff and non-athletics staff with athletics responsibilities, and conference office staff from participating in sports wagering activities or providing information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics practice or competition in a sport in which the NCAA conducts championship competition, in bowl subdivision football and in emerging sports for women.
A wager is any agreement in which an individual or entity agrees to give up an item of value (e.g., cash, shirt, dinner, etc.) in exchange for the possibility of gaining another item of value.
Postseason: In championships in which a bracket format is used, student-athletes, coaches and administrators may not participate in bracket competitions where there is both a required entry fee and an opportunity to win a prize. Student-athletes and administrators may participate under current NCAA rules in bracket contests where there is no entry fee but a possibility of winning a prize. Some NCAA member schools, however, have chosen to ban student-athletes from participating in these types of bracket contests.
Student-Athletes: A student-athlete found in violation of the prohibition against knowingly participating in any sports wagering activities or providing information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activity that involves intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition shall be ineligible for further intercollegiate competition, subject to appeal to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for restoration of eligibility.

Following a five-minute cooling off period, the winning coach and select players will be escorted into the interview area, followed by the losing coach and select players. The cooling off period begins when the head coach enters the locker room immediately following the game. The A-10 shall have the authority to designate and require any student-athlete to attend a postgame news conference and/or those scheduled following practice. BANDS, CHEERLEADERS & MASCOTS
BANDS
A maximum of 29 band members (with a minimum of 19) in addition to one band director will be allowed inside CHASE Fieldhouse to represent each program during the game(s) in which their team is participating. All institutions are required to send a pep band to every game their program competes in during the championship.
Institutions must submit a completed Band Pass List (Appendix C) by Noon on Tuesday, February 21. Submit form to Jazmin Sherard at jsherard@atlantic10.org.
ENTRANCE AND PARKING (DIRECTIONS TO CHASE FIELDHOUSE LOCATED ON PAGE 17)
Buses will drop off/pick up the band at the Band / Cheerleader Entrance located at the East Fieldhouse Entrance to CHASE Fieldhouse (see pages 18-19). All bags / cases will be subject to search/screening upon entrance.
Each team’s submitted Band Pass List will be at the door to validate admittance. Band members do not receive credentials or a game ticket. Band Directors will be issued a Band/Cheer wristband upon entrance to CHASE Fieldhouse for the first game in which their team is playing. Bands will be escorted to their assigned location in the end zone corresponding with their team’s bench.
Bands arriving during the preceding game must remain in their designated pregame area (this will be communicated to the director by the band liaison upon entrance). At the conclusion of the first game, they should move to the designated band section in the appropriate end zone once the area has been cleared by the band playing in the previous game. An Atlantic 10 representative will indicate when it is appropriate for the bands to enter the floor. Bands must remain in their designated section.
GAME PERFORMANCE
The higher seeded team’s band in the first game of each session (Games 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14) will play the National Anthem unless a performer is secured. Prior to the start of any game, bands will alternate playing, with the higher seeded band beginning the rotation. Once the game has begun, the higher seeded band and cheerleaders will perform during the first timeout, or as designated by the sight/sound coordinator. The next timeout will belong to the lower seeded band and cheerleaders. This rotation will continue until halftime.
Halftime entertainment is reserved for the use of the Atlantic 10 Conference. If entertainment is scheduled, bands may play alternating songs after the completion of the entertainment until the start of the second half, according to the game script.
If no entertainment is secured, the designated home team band and cheerleaders may perform from the 12:00 minute mark to the 8:00 minute mark. The designated visiting team band and cheerleaders may perform from the 8:00 minute mark to the 4:00 minute mark. At the 4:00 minute mark, the floor shall be available for the participating teams; however, bands may continue to play alternating songs. The second half rotation will be the same as the first with the designated home team band and cheerleaders taking the first timeout.
Bands are not permitted to play while the game is in progress. Bands may play only during “dead ball” situations, pregame, halftime and postgame. Use of artificial noisemakers and air horns is prohibited. Any single band instrument played outside of the designated band time is considered an artificial noisemaker and is prohibited.
Bands may not go on the playing floor under any circumstances.
BANDS, CHEERLEADERS & MASCOTS
CHEERLEADERS/MASCOTS
Twelve cheerleaders, one cheerleading coach and one uniformed mascot will be allowed on the floor representing each team during the game in which their team is participating. Dance teams must have tickets if not part of the 12 designated cheerleaders.
Institutions must submit a completed Cheerleader/Mascot Pass List (Appendix D) by Noon on Tuesday, February 21. Submit to Jazmin Sherard at jsherard@atlantic10.org.
ENTRANCE AND PARKING (DIRECTIONS TO CHASE FIELDHOUSE LOCATED ON PAGE 17)
Cheerleaders must enter in uniform through the Band / Cheerleader entrance at the East Fieldhouse Entrance to CHASE Fieldhouse (see pages 18-19). All bags / cases will be subject to search/screening upon entrance.

Cheerleading coaches must enter the building with their team and his/her name must appear on the Cheerleader Pass List. Cheerleaders are not issued credentials or a game ticket. A Band/ Cheer wristband will be issued for floor access during pregame, halftime and postgame; and will be given upon entrance to CHASE Fieldhouse prior to their team’s first game. Cheerleading coaches must remain seated with their band (or section reserved for band).
GAME PERFORMANCE
Cheer and mascot performances will be governed according to AACCA policy and guidelines.
Cheerleaders will be granted baseline privileges only during the game in which their team is playing. They are permitted to take the floor prior to the game only for the introduction of starting lineups.
Once the game has begun, the higher seeded team cheerleaders and band will perform during the first timeout, or as designated by the sight/sound coordinator. The next timeout will belong to the lower seeded team cheerleaders. This rotation will continue until halftime. The second half rotation will be the same as the first with the higher seeded team cheerleaders taking the first timeout. Cheerleaders may not take the floor during 30-second timeouts.
Halftime entertainment is reserved for the use of the Atlantic 10 Conference. If no entertainment is secured, the higher seeded team band and cheerleaders may perform from the 12:00 minute mark to the 8:00 minute mark. The lower seeded team band and cheerleaders may perform from the 8:00 minute mark to the 4:00 minute mark. Cheerleaders may use megaphones for voice amplification, but they shall not be used as a noise distraction. This includes pounding them on the floor or striking them with hand(s) or other objects. The use of flags and the distribution of promotional items (i.e., shakers) are acceptable, provided they do not infringe on the safety of spectators or interfere with play. Thundersticks are not permissible. Hand-held signs are subject to the approval of the championship director. No signs may be hung in the arena. Cheerleaders are not permitted to play recorded music. Atlantic 10 performance restrictions will apply.
