It’s February in Delray Beach WILD
January 14 – April 17, 2016
T
he weather is great. The downtown is bustling and season is in full swing.
This month, we bring you a profile of a newcomer
who is in charge of making sure the downtown functions
well. Jamael Stewart is the city’s new Downtown Manager, a newly created position and one that Mr. Stewart brings unique skills to the position. Our Diane Feen gets up close and personal in this month’s City People feature.
We also take a look at romantic options in Delray just in time for
Valentine’s Day.
Luckily, we have enough gift, dining, pampering and hotels to
make this holiday extra special.
We also delve into a terrific non-profit called Delray Students
First, a labor of love for a dear friend who is doing remarkable “The Wave,” Alex Beard
The beauty and protection of the natural world have inspired the contemporary art in this group show. Twelve internationally recognized artists and more than 20 local artists from Plein Air Palm Beach are participating. A portion of proceeds from the sale of artwork will benefit The Watering Hole Foundation, which supports endangered wildlife and was founded by featured artist, Alex Beard. work in our community. We urge you to get involved and make a difference for the next generation of Delray kids.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the city, the
DMC, DDA, CRA, Old School Square and other partner agencies,
sponsors and citizen volunteers for their incredible performance during the holiday season.
It can be hard to conjure up a holiday scene in a balmy environ-
ment, but they pull it off year after year.
We’d also like to congratulate the CRA on wrapping up its 30th
birthday year.
It’s hard to imagine Delray without the yeoman’s work of this
award winning agency. It’s the best CRA in the state bar none. Am I biased? Yes, I am. I’m also correct (wink).
When you read about the mission of Delray Students First you
come to understand that as much as has been accomplished in Delray, much more remains to be done.
We have a deep responsibility to our community’s children and
that old saw ‘it takes a village’ is definitely true. Wishing you a wonderful Febru-

Good Vibrations.
Introducing Whole Body Vibration Therapy, the game changer in physical medicine. Whole body vibration therapy (WBVT) is a new, revolutionary therapy offered at The Conde Center. By applying vibration from a special platform, WBVT stimulates sensors found in the musculoskeletal system called muscle spindles and mechanoreceptors that increase muscle tone in the spine and the extremities and enhance the brain-body connection. This results in the increased production of human growth hormone, serotonin, endorphins, and testosterone; all of which contribute to keeping you feeling and functioning better.
To learn more please visit us at: www.thecondecenter.com email: info@thecondecenter.com or call: (561) 330-6096
Numerous studies have shown WBVT to aid in the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis (one of the main causes of spinal stenosis), osteoporosis, neck-back pain, sports injries, and neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. To find out more about all that whole body vibration can do for you, contact The Conde Center today.

The VolleyGirls
For the past 17 years, the Delray Beach Open has seen many stars come through its pearly, white gates at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. In 2016, the event is going to amp it up even more, hosting the world’s only ten-day ‘Super Event’ featuring tennis champions past and present-exploding into a combined professional men’s ATP World Tour and ATP Champions Tour event,

and running simultaneously over the course of February 12 - 21, 2016. And yet, even tennis’ most-revered legends could not charmingly court the Delray Beach Open by grounds like its charismatic promotional team-the VolleyGirls. The Delray Beach Open’s VolleyGirls are the ambassadors and spokespersons of the event-the iconic figurines of the tournament both onsite at the sponsors’ private parties, PR engagements with players on-air in TV and radio, as well as appearances in the Delray Beach community and Palm Beach County. “When we started the VolleyGirl campaign in 2007, we thought it would be popular, but never realized the extent to which these girls became the iconic figures of the event they did,” said John Butler, Executive Director. “Since [2007] they’ve received national awareness, international recognition within our sport, endorsement deals with incredible fashion boutiques, fitness and spa memberships...It’s all just exploded in such a fantastic way. They’ve become an ideal representation of the event,” says Director of the

Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in February for $50 or less.
oats and brew? You had me at hello. Two of my favorite companies in Delray have joined forces to provide you with a night of cruisin’ and boozin’ (responsibly – there’s only one captain on this boat) and you’re officially invited. February is National Time Management Month and is a wake-up call to manage your time exactly how you see fit! There has to be a work/life balance, people, and let’s not forget about the fun. Delray Yacht Cruises and Saltwater Brewery bring you an evening of fun: beer tasting and cruising aboard their yacht, which promises to feel as magical as it sounds. Held February 4 from 6 to 8 p.m., you and the crew will be coasting down the Intracoastal, enjoying the sights and sounds of the water and the hoppiness, creaminess and maltiness of the beer. Can you think of a better way to manage your time? I can’t, especially when I have a nautical chauffeur, my favorite beer and delightful sights. This is exactly the type of amazing event you need to get you through the work week and help you think about how you’re going to manage your weekend. Delray Yacht Cruises is located at 801 E. Atlantic Ave. (Veteran’s Park) and tickets are $50 per person. Please visit www.delraybeachcruises.com or call (561) 243-0686 for more information and to purchase tickets.

smell the roses – and appreciate the smell. Thankfully there are a ton of ways to relax, and I dabble in a few regularly. However, my new favorite way is with a steamy cup of delightful tea. February is National Therapeutic Recreation Month and when you feel a bit stressed or non-Zen, grab a mug o’ tea and get your therapeutic recreation on. If you’re not sure where to start, head to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens for the Demonstration of Sado: The Way of Tea. You are able to observe Japanese sado “the way of tea,” an ever-changing demonstration rich in seasonal subtleties. The true spirit of sado – harmony (wa), reverence (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku) – along with a sip of green tea and a sweet treat can bring a calm perspective into a busy life. Held February 6 at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., the event is only $5 (excluding a paid admission of $15 for adults) but the value is tremendous if you can learn how to find your calm. The benefits of tea are immense and include helping to protect against cancers, fight free radicals, reducing the risk of heart attack and more, and not to mention that it’s delicious. Take an hour to learn about tea and drink the benefits
for years to come. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road. Please visit www. morikami.org or call (561) 495-0233 for more information.

t’s Florida. There’s always heat. But, we figure out how to deal with it. February is Beat the Heat Month and the best way to beat the heat is to wear a hat, grab a frothy beverage and enjoy some entertainment. Thankfully the Delray Beach Open is
here yet again and you’ve got several days of backyard entertainment. The Delray Beach Open is the world’s only 10-day event consisting of an ATP Champions Tour (Association of Tennis Professionals) and an ATP World Tour event, is televised nationally and internationally, and hosts more than 50,000 spectators. The ATP Champions Tour event is the only ATP Champions Tour sanctioned event in the U.S. and consists of players who have been ranked World No. 1, a Grand Slam singles finalist, or a singles player in a victorious Davis Cup team. Players include Grigor Dimitrov, Tommy Haas, Milos Raonic and the Bryan Brothers have committed to play in the tournament, among others. It is sure to be a swinging good time! The Delray Beach Open is held February 12 through 21 at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, 201 W. Atlantic Ave., and daily tickets start at $29. Please visit www.yellowtennisball. com or call (561) 330-6000 for more information.

ou can’t pick your family but you can always pick your friends! February is Relationship Wellness Month and if you need to see a drama to realize you don’t want the drama, head to the Delray Beach Playhouse for “Other Desert Cities.” In this award-winning play, Jon Robin Baitz tells the story of a prominent political family forced to come to terms with long-buried secrets. When Brooke Wyeth returns to her parents’ home in Palm Springs, she announces she is planning to publish a memoir about a tragic moment in the family’s past. Her older brother joined a radical protest group in the 1970s that set off a bomb in an Army Recruitment Center. Because her parents were close friends with many well-known political figures, they survived the episode with minimal damage to their social standing, but Brooke’s memoir promises to drag the whole ugly affair back into the limelight. The play was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama so you’re sure to get a whole lot of drama, and VOGUE said it was “a scathingly funny and deeply felt family drama.” Tickets are $30 per person and the play runs until February 14. The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 Lakeshore Drive. Please visit www.delraybeachplayhouse.com or call (561) 272-1281 for more information and tickets.

f you have good health, you’re lucky, lucky, lucky. February is International Expect Success Month and if you want to expect success with your health, take tips from the best in the business. The Delray Marketplace Mind Body Expo is chock full of the latest in alternative and holistic products and services, education, demos, food samples, music, dance, exercise, family entertainment and more. This is a great benefit to not only your overall health but also to local non-profits whose missions are to provide healthy lifestyle education and tools for the underprivileged. The event is held February 28 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and features tons of vendors who are ready and eager to tell you about their healthy lifestyle tips and tricks. It’s almost like you can have your health questions answered a million times over from people who are in the know. Best part is that admission is free so you can save green by going green and, more than likely, eating green. The Delray Marketplace is located at 14851 Lyons Road. Please visit www.delraymarket.com or call (561) 865-4613 for more information.

“Before You Give Up, Do This…” And you’ll be surprised how simple it is… Dear Friend,
For the last 4 years, people from Delray Beach and the surrounding areas have come to see me with:
Some people come to my office and tell me they’ve “tried everything.” They come to me ready to give up.
• Headaches/Migraines • Restless leg syndrome • Chronic fatigue • Neck Pain • Shoulder/Arm Pain • Backaches • Numbness In Limbs • Athletic Injuries just to name a few…
That’s right, four out of five people who show up in my office have taken “every” test, wound up with huge medical bills, and are still no better off. Often, they’ve been subjected to medications that have only served to temporarily mask symptoms. But, that’s not what most people are looking for.
treatment that is performed within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee examination, or treatment.). Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. I’ve been helping your neighbors here in Delray Beach for four years now. I have the low exam fee to help more people who need care.
Health (or the lack of it) very often has simple causes, and very reasonable corrections. That’s what I’m going to tell you about. But, before I tell you more, let me tell you something about me. Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine (he tells me there’s nerve pressure on my neck going to my head). The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!” Let me tell you about Natalia, my fiancee. For 5 years, she suffered with bad low back pain and restless pain in her legs at night. Since she was a nurse she saw specialists who ordered tests. They put her on powerful medications yet she still suffered. At age 28, after suffering for years, she started chiropractic care here, and the pain in her legs is now only a rarity, and she has no low back pain at all.
Here’s some of your neighbors success stories: “I am feeling better on so many levels. I went in because of some back pain and after my treatments I found my general health improving as well! I’m very happy with the care I am receiving from Dr. Elan!” (Joe Gillie, Delray Beach, FL) “This is the best thing I have ever done for my body!” (Rosanne Patsy, Delray Beach, FL) Exciting Offer - Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problems, and not just cover them up with drugs. When you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam before February 29, 2016 you’ll receive the entire exam for $27. That includes x-rays, paraspinal thermal imaging, postural analysis… and there are no hidden fees. But, call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this exam normally costs $170. Again, there’s only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out. (The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any other service, examination, or
(Ava, Franklin, and Dr. Elan) My assistant is Pam and she is a really great person. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. Call Pam or me today for an appointment. We can help. Thank you. -Elan Schrier, D.C. P.S. Of course, all people respond differently to care, and no doctor can (or should) guarantee a successful outcome. But, if you’ve tried everything except chiropractic, don’t give up yet! P.P.S. Q
uite frankly the short month of February is the doldrums; the dumping ground if you will, for less than stellar movies. Still there are things to amuse in the dead of winter, starting with the spoof “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”.
February 6 “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” turns novelist Jane Austen on her ear as zombies are mixed in with her classical romance of love across the classes in 19th century England. Lily James stars as plucky heroine Elizabeth Bennett and Sam Riley is the dashing (and fearless zombie killer), Mr. Darcy. Jack Huston is George Wickham, Saki Waterhouse is Kitty Bennett and Douglas Booth is Mr. Bingley. Burr Steers directed a script by David O. Russell (“Joy,” “American Hustle”). The Coen brothers Joel and Ethan wrote and directed “Hail Caesar,” which stars George Clooney as movie star Baird Whitlock, who disappears in the middle of filming. Josh Brolin plays studio fixer Eddie Mannix. Also in this 1950s period piece are Jonah Hill, Dolph Lundgren, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. Nicholas Sparks keeps churning out weepy romance novels and the public keeps lapping them up. The latest is “The Choice,” which follows neighbors Travis Parker (Benjamin Walker) and Gabby Holland (Teresa Palmer) in a small coastal town as they fall in and out of love through the years. Also in the cast are Maggie Grace, Tom Wilkinson, Tom Welling and Anna Enger. Ross Katz (“Marie Antoinette”) directs. February 12 From the X-Men files comes “Deadpool,” starring Ryan Reynolds as former special operatives agent-turned mercenary, Wade Wilson. When Wilson undergoes a rogue experiment he emerges with accelerated healing powers and an alter ego known as Deadpool. Wilson// Deadpool sets out to find the villain who destroyed his life. Morena Baccarin plays his conflicted love interest Vanessa Carlyle, aka Copy Cat. T.J. Miller is
48 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Weasel. Gina Carano is Angel Dust. Ed Skrein is Ajax and Tim Miller directs. There is no easy answer as to “How To Be Single.” This is called a kinda, sorta follow-up to “He’s Just Not That Into You.” Dakota Johnson stars as Alice, a New York City single girl whose friends include Rebel Wilson, Dan Stevens, Leslie Mann, Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans, Jr. Christian Ditter directs a script based on a 2008 novel by Liz Tuccillo. Those supercool fashionistas Derek (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) are back ten years later in Europe for “Zoolander 2.” Uh-oh, the guys are no longer relevant in the fashion world. What shall they do? Justin Theroux directs a script co-written with Ben Stiller. Also featured are Will Farrell, Christine Taylor, Penelope Cruz and Billy Zane. February 19 With a title called “Risen” you can guess this is a religious film. You guessed right. Joseph Fiennes (Ralph’s younger brother) stars as Clavius, a high-ranking Roman Military Tribune who with his fellow Tribune Lucius (Tom Felton) are charged by Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) with what happened to the body of Jesus Christ, which disappeared three days after it was entombed. Pilate thinks some of Jesus’ radical followers snatched the body to claim a Resurrection. Kevin Reynolds directs a script co-written with Paul Aiello (“Red Dawn”). Maria Botto plays Mary Magdalene. No, “Viral” is not about the Internet. It’s about a virus that has wiped out half the Earth’s population. Stacey (Analeigh Tipcon) begins to record what happens when she and her infected sister Stacey (Sofia Black-D’Elia) are put in quarantine. Henry Joost (“Paranormal Activity 3 and 4”) directs. February 26 Yes, there were many “Gods of Egypt;” some good, some evil. Bek (Brenton Thwaites) and the powerful god Horus (Niko-
laji Coster-Waldau) wage battle to save Egypt from Set (Gerard Butler) the God of Darkness, who has seized the throne and caused chaos. Geoffrey Rush, Courtney Eaton and Bruce Spence also star. Alex Proyas (“I Robot”) directs. For your information, 999 is cop language for “policeman down.” “Triple 9” is a made-in-Atlanta action movie using that code as part of a scheme to pull off an impossible heist. When a rookie cop, marked for death, foils his attackers, the chase is on. The formidable cast includes Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofer, Kate Winslet, Anthony Mackie and Aaron Paul. John Hillcoat (“Lawless”) directs a script by Matt Cook. “Eddie the Eagle” is yet another “inspired by true events” movie starring Taron Egerton as Michael “Eddie” Edwards, an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper and Hugh Jackman as Chuck Berghorn, his unconventional, charismatic coach who helped make Edwards an unexpected hero of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Christopher Walken and Tim McInnerny co-star under director Dexter Fletcher.

Shoulder Pain: A Neurological Approach
{
BY DR. TRAVIS LAMPERSKI
Most people think that when an individual is suffering from any joint pain they are an athlete or older adult. But when it comes to the shoulder joint anyone is at risk. Approximately 7.5 million people each year visited their doctor with shoulder pain. In fact, shoulders are the most common injured joints in the body.
Traumatic injuries, arthritis, poor muscle tone and inflammation in and around joints are common problems in adults, often causing severe pain, discomfort and immobility. Most often acute and chronic shoulder injuries involve the muscles, ligaments and tendon that support and move the shoulder rather than the bone itself. The unique and complex design of the shoulder joint provides a great degree of mobility however; for increased mobility, stability in sacrificed. From a bony support perspective the shoulder is essentially unstable making it more susceptible to injuries like sprain and strains and degeneration. The rotator cuff is composed of four small muscles that are positioned around the shoulder and are responsible for moving and stabilizing the shoulder joint.
Common Rotator Cuff Injuries Odds are that when you’re suffering from shoulder pain someone you know will say “it’s your rotator cuff” and most of the time they are correct. Injuries to the rotator cuff muscles are by far the most common cause of shoulder pain and disability in adults. Tendonitis, tears and impingement syndrome are a few conditions that can affect the rotator cuff. Tendonitis/Impingement Syndrome Tendonitis and impingement syndromes can cause pain in multiple locations in the shoulder. The pain is produced from irritation (rubbing) and inflammation to the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles. Often times an individual will experience mild to severe pain when the
54 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
arm is raised over the head, out to the side of the body or when an individual places their hand in their pocket. When impingement syndromes are not treated medically, repetitive irritation to the tendon may result in a tearing of the tendon or muscle. Rotator Cuff Tear Rotator cuff tears occur suddenly due to high force direct trauma to the shoulder, a fall onto an outstretched hand and heavy lifting or pulling activities, but more often they develop overtime due to repetitive or prolonged activities placing
strain on the rotator cuff muscles. This repetitive strain overtime creates micro tears within the belly of the muscle or ligaments causing pain and at times leading to weakness and inability to use the arm for normal daily activities. A completely ruptured rotator cuff tendon makes it impossible for an individual to move their arm through normal ranges of motion or lift anything without assistance. Treatment Treating shoulder injuries depends entirely on the cause of the problem. A thorough orthopedic and neurological examination is very important when diagnosing any shoulder issue because most of these injuries will respond very well to conservative management. The first goal with any care is to decrease pain and inflammation. High powered laser therapy is designed to create an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms and pain. Performing injury specific therapeutic exercises can make the difference between a properly rehabbed shoulder verses one that can develop biomechanical flaws later on in life. If you are dealing with an acute or chronic shoulder problem, stop suffering and start living, schedule an appointment today. Is Botox® Really Toxic?
{
By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.
People often ask me why anyone would want to inject poison or bacteria into their face just to get rid of wrinkles? My response is that the 11 million Americans who use Botox® may have done a bit of research and learned that it is not poison and it is not a bacteria.
So if it’s not poison, what is it? “Botox®” is one of the many trade names for the protein called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While many refer to this neuromodulator as “Botox®,” there are actually several companies that make nearly identical products. Like it or not, it’s similar to how “Kleenex” became the term for all paper tissues. We lump Dysport, Xeomin, and Myoblock together and refer to all of these drugs as “Botox®.” In my opinion Dysport, Xeomin, and Myoblock which are also clostridium derived proteins did a better job at naming their products (they left off the “tox” part, which limits patient anxiety). They achieve the same results - erasing wrinkles and turning the clock back 5-10 years with a medical procedure that typically takes less than 10 minutes in a dermatologist’s office. Botox®, known by the FDA as onabotulinumtoxin A, is merely a protein molecule composed of a string of amino acids, just like proteins found in vegetables and meat sources. The confusion for some lies in the misconception that people are getting “botulism” injections. Botulism is a severe, life threatening infection (which often starts as food poisoning) caused by the bacteria Clostidium botulinum. In severe cases of botulism, patients can become “septic” or “toxic” and can go into shock. But this has nothing to do with the cosmetic usage of Botox®. There are no bacteria being injected during a cosmetic Botox® treatment and therefore patients don’t become toxic. The FDA approved medical protein is synthesized in a laboratory and bottled and sold in sterile vials. One dark caveat, there have been reports of “Botox®” being sold on the black market that actually
56 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
does contain bacteria. People who have been injected with illegal black market products have developed serious health problems that required hospital care. Botox® has been safely used in medicine for the last 34 years. Originally it was approved by the FDA to treat spasticity in the eye muscles and an ocular condition call strabismus, and it is approved for children ages 12 and over. In addition to cosmetic use, Botox® is used to treat cervical dystonia, writer’s cramp, excessive sweating, achalasia (an esophagus problem), chronic pain, neuropathy, migraine headaches and overactive bladders. What about complications? Using Botox® cosmetically is an art form that should be administered only by highly trained professionals. While you may see advertisements for Botox® in salons, spas and even a home party, Botox® is exclusively a medical procedure, with the potential to have adverse side effects
if not injected with the correct technique. In trained hands, Botox® complications are usually limited to minor things like bruising or the occasional asymmetric eyebrow. More serious issues have resulted from injections of excessive amounts in the neck (not a cosmetic application). In this scenario Botox® can travel to the muscles that control swallowing and coughing, and aspiration of food and/or pneumonia can result. These complications are extremely rare, but they do underscore that Botox® treatments are not like getting a massage or facial. It is a medical procedure which requires the controlled environment and professional care of a medical office. Respect for the procedure ensures patient safety and optimum privacy. Dr. Thomas C. Smile, it’s good for you!
{
BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA
Having a straight, healthy smile has never been easier.
OVERVIEW Smiling is one of the easiest ways to boost your health, and is the gateway to your happiness and confidence. Americans spend trillions of dollars every year trying to boost health, focusing on supplements, the newest fitness routines, diets and health care, but don’t consider their smile in the mix. However, not everyone enjoys all the healthful benefits of a straight and vibrant smile if they’re embarrassed to smile. Eighty percent of Americans suffer from some level of malocclusion or imperfect position of the teeth when the jaws are closed. This crowding of the teeth not only leaves us embarrassed to smile, but often results in gum disease, decay, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss. Once affected, these dental ailments will all prove to be both uncomfortable and costly. They can even have devastating ramifications for your overall health and wellbeing, contributing to a greater risk of systemic infection, heart disease, diabetes, low birth weight, and more. What’s DOMS and how to avoid it By vickie wong
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is the sense of sore, tender and tight muscles after an intense exercise session. DOMS predominantly exist 24 hours after a training session. It can last up to 72 hours or more. Even though DOMS give the idea that the body is stressed on a higher level than usual, it does not indicate a worthy or not worthy training session.
DOMS is also an adaptive response so the more training the body goes through the better the body can withstand the stress. Creatine kinase is one of the ultimate indirect markers for muscle damage. When the muscle is continuously stretched (eccentric), proteins leak out of the muscle cells from the microfiber tears. Therefore, soreness is from proteins, ions and acid build up in the muscles. It has been believed that lactic acid is the cause of DOMS. Recent studies from various universities and exercise associations have proven that theory false. Lactic acid can be a positive factor for performance. The more lactic acid an individual can produce, the greater power output generated. Fast twitch muscle fibers (efficient in high intensity but short duration activities) mainly using fast glycolysis (energy system that does not involve oxygen but uses the energy derived from glucose). All in all lactic acid does not cause muscle soreness but muscle fatigue. Muscle fatigue is the reduced ability for the muscles to produce energy. Muscle fatigue is present due to overtraining. A few symptoms includes mild trembling, weak grip or simply drained during an exercise session. People take rest days, or train a different group of muscles every day to avoid fatiguing. The
60 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
“Push-Pull” exercise technique is a great method to improve recovery and recruitment. The thought that if one’s main goal is to bench press two times the body weight or develop the most robust glutes possible will force the individual to work 3-6 days straight on chest exercises or on the gluteus maximus. At that point the body will not be able to efficiently progress. There is also muscle pain aside from DOMS and fatigue. This pain may be sharp
located around muscles or joints. The pain can linger for long periods of time without fully disappearing. When sharp pain is felt, it is best to stop exercise and consult a medical professional. During muscle pain, exercise should not be stopped entirely. Rehabilitation exercises with bands and light to moderate exercise avoiding the location of the pain can be compensated. The main focus to avoid muscle injuries, fatigue or lessen soreness is to start every exercise session with a short warm up of dynamic stretching such as butt kickers, arm circles, and walking lunges. There are a few “core” exercises such as back squats, bench press that should be implemented early on in the exercise session. Exercise order can also effect the muscle discomfort. Static stretching before exercising is not recommended. Studies have shown that static stretching before an exercise can potentially cause for higher injuries rather than prevention. America’s Most Romantic Small City
By Linda brown
{
Delray Beach is known as a two-time All America City and was named America’s Most Fun Small Town, but those in the know—know that at its heart Delray Beach is a romantic city.
From quaint hotel properties and a vast array of spas to beautiful ocean views and romantic wine dinners, Delray has it all and there’s no place better than the village by the sea to spend Valentine’s Day. Here’s a few off the beaten path options we hope you’ll explore. Staycations—From the high end and historic to boutique options and family owned properties, Delray has quietly become a great place to spend a weekend living like a tourist. About a decade ago, city leaders lamented the lack of hotel rooms, but a mini-boomlet of construction has suddenly made Delray a hot place to stay for a long weekend.
62 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
If you like historic lodging, consider either the Sundy House, home of Delray’s first mayor, or the Colony Hotel, which is considered one of America’s most historic hotels. Boutique options range from the elegant but casual Crane’s Beach House to the family owned Wright By The Sea. Luxury options also abound with the magnificent Seagate Hotel leading the way. So next time you consider gassing up the car and getting out of Dodge, treat your significant other to a long weekend right here at home. There are plenty of cool options. Nature—Delray has built an international reputation for marrying small town charm with big city amenities but what’s
great about Delray is with a little effort you can get lost in beautiful Florida nature. Consider a visit to the underrated Lake Ida Park which has miles of trails, an incredible dog park, abundant wildlife, great bird watching and a huge lake to fish, jet ski or boat.
Another romantic option for the nature lover is Morikami Park, which features romantic solitude minutes from downtown Delray. The park and gardens are gorgeous and provides many opportunities for picnics and exploration. Morikami’s gardens, a must see, is named Roji-en: Garden of the Drops of Dew. The six gardens were designed to be a living exhibit complementing the museum. Designer Hoichi Kurisu sought to create a garden complex for the new millennium and trust us he succeeded. The gardens are inspired by, but are not replicas of, famous gardens in Japan. Says Kurisu: “My hope is that a visit to the gardens will genuinely and deeply touch each individual’s life. My hope is that progressive ideas will be born and that action will take root here, that the intuitive conviction of such enduring qualities as beauty, love, health and wholeness, integrity, creativity, renewal, and selflessness will be strengthened. I will have accomplished my goal if visitors to the gardens come away refreshed and feeling better about themselves and their world while looking forward to sharing their experiences here with others.” We also highly recommend a stroll along the beach or beachside promenade, soon to be improved as a result of great work by the Beach Property Owners Association and local architectural icon Bob Currie.
We remain amazed at the amount of people who live here and don’t visit the ocean. We advise you to take advantage this Valentine’s Day. Culture---Nothing says romance better than sharing a meaningful cultural experience. The Arts Garage has pushed the envelope with provocative theater performances designed to rev your engine and fire up your imagination. In February, we highly recommend “Reborning” a play by Zayd Dohrn that is directed by Keith Garsson. The play runs through February 14 with performances on Thursday s and Friday s at 7:30pm and Saturdays at 7pm (and 2pm on Saturday, February 13). “Reborning” is a psychological thriller about the power of creation. Kelly, a sculptress in New York City, has the unique ability to “recreate” someone’s past. But when the mysterious Emily proposes a special project, Kelly is unprepared for the consequences of revisiting history.
The Los Angeles Times called it a “…superb comedy-drama which builds to a shattering denouement.” Not to be outdone, Delray’s Old School Square offers a romantic line-up that includes a widely anticipated new exhibit called “Wild” which runs through April. This group show features contemporary artwork by internationally recognized artists who are inspired by nature and use their talents to show the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Artwork featured in this exhibition has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. A portion of proceeds from the sale of artwork in the show goes to The Watering Hole Foundation in support of conservation efforts. “Wild” also features paintings by Plein Air Palm Beach artists, who are inspired by and have captured the beauty of South Florida’s lush landscapes. You may also want to join Old School Square guides for a “First Friday Art Walk” on February 5th.

These one-of-a-kind gifts can be found at The Monogram Closet in Delray Beach. Their new location in the Historic West Settler area sets the scene as a charming 1930s cottage with more space for their unique items. For more than a decade, the local monogram shop has been carrying classic products from baby items and blankets to housewares and fashion accessories to exquisite marble wood cutting boards. Owner Sabrina Amelung opened The Monogram Closet in 2003 because of her passion for monogramming and she recognized a need for the business in the community. Her mother and sister-in- law originally owned a stationery store, so when Sabrina was in the process of starting her own, her sister-in-law was a big help. I didn’t want to compete with any other store and found that monogramming was an untapped niche in the area. I had stud-

There is a section for babies with blankets, wooden toys, baby mats and more. Another section is designated for houseware items such as linen guest towels, cheese trays, ceramic platters, sets of personalized wine glasses and much more. For your significant others, you can personalize a towel set, robe, bath products and tote bags. customers can bring in a shirt or item to be monogrammed. The store is a one-stop shop for all your gift ideas and every day fashion. For this Valentine’s Day, you can pick up a unique and personalized jewelry piece, wallet or purse to show your appreciation. “Customers can stop by and find the perfect pick up gift or custom order something special. When the person gets the gift with their monogram on it, they know that you have taken the extra time picking out the gift. We strive to provide great personal service, so much so that we know most of our customers by name. Our small staff has been on board since day one to provide quick turnaround on all custom orders,” said Amelung. “We can personalize something in one or two days. We have a little something for everyone in our store. The owner says the monogram store has grown over the years and branched out to offer more gifts and fashion accessories. Besides the wide array of presents and fashion items and a quick turnaround time, The Monogram Closet is also a meeting place where locals enjoy socializing with their friends, staff and neighbors. “When our customers walk in, they know our kids and we know theirs. You get all walks of life coming through our doors; it’s a melting pot. Our store has always just fit Delray Beach,” said Amelung. “We’ve had our same employees here since 2004, since we have opened. Our staff enjoys working here and they want to be a part of the store. They always have a great attitude and it shows. They are happy to help our customers find that perfect gift.” The owner finds it rewarding when a customer comes into The Monogram Closet and is thrilled of the outcome of what they have helped create. “What makes our product more enticing with all the online stores is that you make it unique, you make it personal. What we sell isn’t cookie cutter. Our customers are making it theirs and special,” said Amelung. Stop by The Monogram Closet today for your personalized gift! By TRISH GIANDO
{
It is already February 2016 and now that we are into a new year, Edge Automotive is here to make sure that you take care of that very important vehicle where most people spend at least 30-50% of their day.
When was the last time you thought about preventative maintenance? How about a noise that you have been hearing for a while and have not checked it out as of yet. Did you just purchase a new or used car? Most of the general population take their vehicles for granted and at times have felt panic when they’ve heard a strange noise or their car was malfunctioning. Edge Automotive makes it so easy and convenient to ensure that all is well with your car in order to provide a sense of security and safety for you and your passengers. For the past 9 years, Edge Automotive has gained notoriety in being a one-stop automotive shop servicing Boca, Delray and the surrounding areas. Since its opening, Edge Automotive’s staff of ASE Certified and Master Technicians has doubled. This along with keeping up to date with technology has created the successful business that it is today.

Their state-of-the-art 6000 square foot facility, conveniently located in northeast Boca Raton has become a popular provider of auto repair to the private sector, businesses and local car dealers as well as many professionals from the surrounding hospitals. Throughout the years, word of mouth has provided a major contribution to Edge Automotive’s expansive clientele. When you enter the bright, comfortable office area, you are greeted by the smiling face of Robert Lanzet, the service manager. He is there to answer any questions and gather all pertinent information in order to service your car for ultimate performance. Owner Mike Levy’s office is in full view and he is also available for anyone to express their concerns directly to him as well. Levy’s, main focus is quality service and customer satisfaction. “I feel that accessibility is very important. I encourage my customers to call me on my cell phone if necessary. By keeping myself readily available, it gives my customers a comfort level in knowing that I am always there for them,” said Levy. Edge Automotive specializes in highend foreign and domestic vehicles along with servicing many classic models as well. Owner Mike Levy specifically has a passion for the quality and beauty of older sporty vehicles. He is the proud owner of a 1970 Dodge Super Bee and a 1965 Buick Riviera. “This business is respected by many, including the local car dealers that provide us with many referrals. We have the same factory capabilities and diagnostic technologies as
a dealership, specifically Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Audi.” said owner, Mike Levy. ”Approximately 30% of Edge Automotive’s business is working on Mercedes and BMW’s. “All customers receive the same 5-star treatment, no job is too big or too small here,” said Levy. When your car breaks down, this is the type of service you will receive… When you call the shop, if necessary someone will come out and pick up the car wherever it is. Once the car is in the shop, diagnostics are run to pinpoint the problem and you are contacted either by phone or text with a summary and quote before any procedures are done. “Many times, I am communicating via text per customer request. This method is preferred with many of my clients that are physicians who cannot be interrupted and find texting to be a major convenience. Some clients I never even see, we pick up their car, text them a quote, do the job whether it is a repair or preventive maintenance. Once done, we wash and test drive the car and can even return it to the owner’s location. I take pride in test driving the vehicles myself.” said Levy. Every customer that I have observed in the front office always appear to be very relaxed with a sense of familiarity and confidence. Both Mike and Robert are very accommodating and are there to meet every client’s needs plus more. They not only know everything about their client’s vehicle but also treat everyone as if they were family offering any assistance necessary to
provide them with the utmost satisfaction. It is Edge Automotive’s goal to be a one-stop automotive shop. If you need body work, a new dealer key, an alignment, window tinting, battery or anything else to do with cars, Edge Automotive will get it done! The shop is also registered with the National Automotive Taskforce (NASTF) which is the organization that allows them the capabilities to work on theft deterrent systems such as alarms, antitheft systems and related products. Edge Automotive offers full preventive maintenance upon which they always check the vehicle’s factory requirements according to age and model in order to keep your car running properly according to the correct guidelines. For the past 3 years, the shop was awarded “Best Service Award” on Angie’s list. At Edge Automotive you get the amenities of a large dealership with a more personalized service and atmosphere. They offer full vehicle maintenance, 24hour towing, car rental, vehicle pick-up and delivery, complimentary vehicle wash, vehicle sales, a customer’s existing extended warranties are honored, plus the shop also sells extended warranties on the premises. They are also official tire dealers for Firestone, Bridgestone, and Toyo. Along with this, GoGreenTM Nitrogen inflation is available there as well. Interior Design Made To Order
ALICIA KINGSLEY
Owner/Principal Designer Alicia

Alicia Kingsley knows that good design evokes a variation of emotions.
She knows that because her interior design business is driven by passion and talent. She’s also driven to create the extraordinary where ordinary has worn out its welcome. But her mantra is always – create the mood or style that fits the client. “I feel a well designed home is a well designed life and as a result the client will be more productive and inspired in a supportive environment,” said the professional dancer and former Rockette. Kingsley has a unique sense of style that combines the old with the new, the retro against the sparkling essence of newness. That’s what makes her the darling of the design industry. She has won awards and been singled out by celebrity Interior Designer

and author Amanda Nisbet. “This space oozes glamour. You have combined varying patterns and thought about different light sources which are key ingredients to a pretty and functional room. Congratulations! This is a well thought out space providing glamour, whimsy, and comfort…my three musts.” This talent that Kingsley has poured into her business was cultivated at an early age. Her mother and grandmother were avid antique collectors and Alicia went along for the ride. Even as a child she was always decorating her bedroom and dreaming about the next new design creation. “I’m a creative person, designing anything feeds my soul. It was the next logical progression after my dance career.”
Kingsley wasn’t just any dancer, she was a Radio City Rockette and a professional Los Angeles dancer in film and television. Now that her dance shoes are packed away she has taken that dexterity and balance into other people’s lives to make their dwellings dance with delight. “I am in love with all of your rooms. They are truly works of art,” said Adele. “Gorgeous, it looks spectacular. I love the feel of the room, it’s so artistic and elegant,” adds another client. Part of the allure of her talent lies in Kingsley’s ability to strip furniture of its familiarity and create something else brimming with possibilities. She can reupholster an antique chair so it looks more like modern art than just a piece of furniture. That’s what sets Kingsley apart from other interior designers - her sense of adventure and imagination reign supreme. “I like to create architectural interest like a custom ceiling molding, a wood pattern on the floor, or built-ins for example. And, I always infuse some form of nostalgia, whether it’s a family heirloom or an antique from an auction house.”
“
My style is dictated by my client, but it is ever-evolving, raw yet elegant, ultra chic and always sexy
”
That’s what she did for one client who needed to add space to their home office. She designed custom built-ins from floor to ceiling and created a meaningful yet functional space for the home owner. If the devil is in the details then Kingsley has seen the little man in the red suit. Her ability to create timeless yet unique moldings and bespoke designs on chairs (in the form of abstract art patterns) has garnered her a large following of clients that want their homes to have a certain element of luxury and sensual appeal. Much of the delicacy of her work remains Kingsley’s ability to take one-of-a-kind pieces and make them fit a room whether it be contemporary furnishings or modern. She enjoys working with patterns and textures and finds that simplicity can be found by combining the most obvious or obscure of finishings. “I must confess, I am a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n roll. I love contrast and find beauty in the rough and refined. My style is dictated by my client, but it is ever-evolving, raw yet elegant, ultra chic and always sexy.” That’s why Alicia Kingsley and her Interior Design firm have been featured in Luxe Interiors and Design Magazine. It’s also why other designers sing her praises. “Alicia is darling, endearing, warm, kind, smiling and beautiful right off the bat. All the stars aligned on this one! Neat as a pin, clean as a whistle, prompt, communicative and inquisitive. I have nothing but over-exaggerated positives for this lady!” said NYC Interior Designer Drew McGukin. Kingsley has a discriminating sensibility and meticulous creative process. “I try to create the finest and most rewarding client experience. I also like to celebrate great architectural details to curate rooms that are a thoughtful reflection of those who inhabit them.”

Delray Beach Tennis Champion
Kevin Anderson Ranked 12th in the World By Nicol Jenkins

On a typical weekend, you might find Kevin Anderson and his wife Kelsey dining on Atlantic Ave, swinging the tennis racquet at the Delray Beach Tennis Center or working out at a local gym.
76 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
While they appear to be your average married couple who enjoy the Delray Beach lifestyle, appearances are more than skin deep. If you take a closer look and get a chance to chat with the couple, you quickly realize that they have quite a bit of knowledge about worldly travels and mainly about the sport of tennis, which they both love. When they are not home basking in the South Florida sun; hotels, airplanes and tennis courts filled with cheering fans are their home away from home during the other 35 weeks out of the year. And Kevin and Kelsey have spent lots of time at major tennis championships around the globe. That’s because your next-door neighbor is a major tennis star who is ranked 12th in the world. With such a modest and down to earth demeanor, you would never know that he’s such an athletic celebrity in his own right. Kevin Anderson, who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, picked up a racquet at only 6 years old. Kevin and his brother Greg were coached by their father, who also played tennis. According to his mother Barbara, Kevin comes from a tennis family. “Myself and his father played and we grew up next to tennis courts. So it was a natural thing when our sons were born that’s what they would do.” Kevin continued that love for tennis because “there was never a day I wanted to quit or stop playing.” “It’s a sport that doesn’t rely on other peo-
ple’s evaluation; it’s not a team sport. The way the sport is structured your achievements speak for themselves. I worked really hard and spent a lot of time and hours, and I never felt like there was a time where I wanted to stop training or it was too much,” said Kevin. That practice paid off with a tennis scholarship to the University of Illinois in 2005, where he would ultimately continue his athletic career and meet his wife at a study group for athletes. In his junior year of college he turned pro and has had many milestones since. 2008 was the year where he had a few breakout events including: becoming the top-ranked male South African player in 2008 after making the final at the 2008 Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas. In 2012, Kevin won the Delray Beach Open. In 2015, he achieved his careerhigh ranking of World No. 10. He is the first South African to be ranked in the top 10 since Wayne Ferreira was No. 10 in 1997. And in 2011, he defeated Somdev Devvarman in his hometown of Johannesburg to capture the South African Open title for his first ATP-level event title. Anderson has also represented South Africa in both Davis Cup play and in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Kevin and Kelsey decided to move to Delray Beach in 2012 because “South Florida is much better for practicing and training for tennis,” said Kelsey. Kevin practices and trains daily at the Delray Beach Tennis Center and at the Pro World Academy in Delray and has a great team of

athletes, coaches and supporters, including his wife, who encourage him daily. Kevin is now training for the Australian Open Grand Slam event and then the Delray Beach Open on February 12 through the 21st (there is an ATP Champions event February 12 through 14th, followed by the ATP World Tour event, where Kevin will play on Monday or Tuesday, February 15 or 16), and through the remainder of a 35 week season which includes Grand Slam events, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Kevin’s short-term goal is to get back into the Top 10 ranking and ultimately he wants to make Top 5. “I am more comfortable in my ability and belief that I have in my games, and I know the areas I need to improve on. This year was great for me being in the Top 10 for the first time. It was my childhood dream and not many get there. My goal is to get to the top 5 and higher and I work at it every day,” said Kevin. “I always had a very strong desire to keep improving and working hard, and I have a very strong team behind me who are all on the same page of working together and making improvements. I have had a passion and love for tennis since I first started and it hasn’t changed. I have been playing tennis a very long time now, for 23 years, and I am in the prime of my career. My body is healthy, and I have a lot of years ahead of me. I am excited for what the future can bring!” His wife is also very optimistic about Kevin’s future in tennis. “It’s really easy for me to be supportive and follow Kevin because he’s so hard working and puts everything he has into becoming the best tennis player he can be, and it’s really rewarding when he reaches these goals and milestones. Kevin surrounds himself with really good people who give him all the tools he needs,” added Kelsey. Kevin and Kelsey have become known in the local community for giving back to various charitable causes. They hope the community will come out and cheer for their neighbor at the Delray Beach Open in February. “The tournament has been here for many years and people in this area really do love tennis. I think residents would like to know that their neighbor is a world class tennis player. I hope our neighbors can come out and support Kevin,” said Kelsey. Kevin will continue his love for the game and hopes to do well at the international and local tournaments. “It feels good living my dream as a professional tennis player and being able to travel to play tennis. Sometimes you put a lot of pressure on yourself and forget how far you’ve come,” said Kevin. Be sure to cheer on your local tennis star at the Delray Beach Open this February!
K
evin Anderson is one of three Top 20 players who will headline the ATP World Tour field at the 24th annual Delray Beach Open, coming up February 12-21 at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center. Raonic beat Roger Federer to win the Brisbane tournament in the opening week of the 2016 season, and could come into Delray Beach ranked higher than his 2015 finish (No. 14). A Sparkling Moment In Time And Space
VIXITY JEWELRY By Diane Feen

Shopping for jewelry is always an ecstatic occasion. But a trip to Vixity in Delray Beach is like a trip around the world. Not just because their unique pieces are of a global nature, but because the boutique itself beckons one back to a time and place of harmony and small town reverence for its trade.
Mindy Zwerin, Managing Partner
It’s not by accident that Mindy Zwerin has created an homage to beauty and jewels of all stature (from fine to fashion) under one finely tuned roof. It was her master plan all along. “I wanted a gallery inspired atmosphere that was comfortable and friendly. This is a place where we get to know our customers and where we share the stories of our global artisans,” said Zwerin who is the mastermind behind the creation of Vixity. When it comes to self expression Zwerin and her business developer Mindi Jo Schifrin have hit a bulls eye. Their elegance and creativity in both the design of the shop and the uniqueness of the merchandise makes it a visual masterpiece. There are one- of-a-kind bold beaded

necklaces in brilliant colors as well as spiritually inspired necklaces with dangling Buddha’s and brass elephants. They also have elegant home décor items like silver or gold picture frames (with novelty designer trim), elegant serving dishes, ornate hand beaded clutches and wall art with sayings like “Love you More.” Vixity is a veritable holiday from the ordinary. It’s also a peak sensual experience for the fashion minded purveyor of good taste. Just ask PR pro Candice Rojas. “Vixity is a special place. You feel the love and beauty as you enter the store. I purchased the most spectacular vintage bags for my makeup and computer! I love their unique Jewelry and accessories.”
It’s easy to love this shop that has combined the refined elegance of the old world with the spontaneity of the new one. To make sure that their retail footprint has a more lasting impression they also sell Fair Trade items handmade in countries around the world. Local Florida artists and designers also have their wares in this decorative retail world of superlatives. They not only put out a plate of eatable goodies, but Vixity offers jewelry making classes, trunk shows, meditation and yoga classes and networking events. It’s all part of Zwerin’s philosophy that you may enter as a stranger, but you’ll leave as a friend. This intimate retail philosophy was part and parcel of her childhood. “My father Seymour was a jewelry manufacturer and retailer in New York. He encouraged me from an early age to learn how to polish and repair jewelry and how to do business. I saw how his moral fiber allowed him to relate to his clients and establish lifelong relationships.” Kimberly Pulido, Social Media/Social Connections
That is what continues to motivate Zwerin and her staff. “I enjoy watching our customers fall in love with our products as much as I love presenting them. Our friendly staff provides a true personalized shopping experience for each customer.” They sure do. That’s why brides and grooms often shop at Vixity for their bridal party gifts and wedding rings. Vixity also offer bridal registry as well as help in finding the perfect engagement or wedding ring. “We consign and carry estate jewelry and fine jewelry as well. Our inventory reflects more than just merchandise; it’s jewelry with an edge that is gorgeous, unique and sparkly with a much deeper meaning.” Being meaningful in intention - and helpful to customers and designers - is one of their primary goals. You can feel it when you enter this upbeat glorious shop and you can read it on their picture frames, prints and in the delicacy of their artful merchandise. “Our philosophy is for people to walk in here and feel beautiful inside and out. We enjoy talking to our customers and experiencing that small town feel,” said Schiffrin, who has a stellar background in accessories with companies such as Calvin Klein, DKNY
Mindi Jo Schifrin, Business Development/Buyer Travel Partner; Alissa Roo, Web Development; Jen Pico, Designer; Michael Zwerin, Customer Service and Inventory Manager; Lori Behrman, Visual Display; Mindy Zwerin, Managing Partner
and Brooks Brothers. They also carry local artists’ paintings, long colorful hand beaded necklaces (with satin appliqués), triple tier Swarovski crystal necklaces, pearl trimmed picture frames and vintage inspired earrings. Much of this classy yet classic merchandise resides where it should – inside lit vintage Bombay chests. The Vixity experience is as varied and sublime as the artisans it showcases. Combine that with a dash of passion and a dose of superb fashion sense and you have an
intimate small town experience that rivals those on Rodeo Drive or Madison Avenue. Stop by Vixity for an eclectic global accessory tour. You will cherish the ride. Vixity, Jewelry with an Edge 812 E. Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach Info@vixity.com | www.vixity.com 561-270-3544

That extra dose of motivation makes Slash Fitness succeed where other gyms fail. The staff doesn’t let their members fall through the cracks. They are always keeping track of their members’ fitness progress. Slash offers educational advice on fitness, nutrition and training on many mediums. Whether it’s during a workout, notifications on their Slash Fitness App, posts on their “SLASHMOB” Facebook page, or in passing Atlantic Avenue, Slash has got you covered! Since opening their doors in Delray Beach three years ago, Slash Fitness has become known as more than a gym but as a ‘Slash Fit-

ness’ family. Staff praises members who reach their fitness goals by sharing their successes on their website and in monthly newsletters. Members feel more like family as they encourage one another during workouts, on social media, and outside the walls of Slash. That was the goal when co-owners and personal training fitness professionals- Joe Ardagna, Andy Sziraki and Austin Brock- created the Slash Fitness lifestyle. Unlike large franchise gyms where members get lost in the sea of heavy machines and big muscles; Slash Fitness shows you step-by-step how to work out the right way. They offer group and private classes
taught by top personal training professionals. Another unique feature that sets Slash Fitness apart is their exercise testing day, called The Combine, similar to the NFL Combine, where professional athletes are tested for strength, endurance and their fitness levels. The event is free to all members and is offered every quarter. The tests include: body fat percentage, bench press, deadlift, pullups, 40-yard dash, vertical jump, agility exercises, pushups, sit-ups, reaction, balance, flexibility and more! There will also be local fitness related business vendors, including The BioStation who performs a thorough body composition analysis. The next Combine will be held on February 6th from 8 am till Noon and is open to the public for a $25 drop in fee. “With the Combine event we separate ourselves from the rest by PROVING results and not just PROMISING them,” said Joe. “The whole idea behind Slash Fitness is not just about the workout but about getting the result. You are not paying for a gym member-

ship, you are paying for the services and supervision of our fitness professionals,” added Andy. Austin added, “Our members are getting healthier all the time and achieving their goals. At Slash Fitness, you work with a trained professional every time who helps you reach your goals as quickly as possible. We want you to get into the best shape of your life and not just jump on a machine and say you went to the gym.” Slash Fitness also goes a step further and tracks your calories burned and heart rate during the workout. Their system then stores it for you in your own profile so you can see your progress. They even have fun calorie burning contests where the member who has burned the most calories wins a fitness related prize. “We want to keep our members motivated to work harder and stay committed. Unlike other gyms where some members only go one day, here we don’t let people slide. We send them motivational messages and incentives to be here,” said Austin. According to Andy, the goal at Slash Fitness is not short term but long lasting. “We are not a New Years resolution; we are a NEW YOU resolution!” Joe says the staff at Slash Fitness make every member feel at home. “Intimidation is a big thing in some gyms but not here at Slash Fitness. We are constantly giving our members positive reinforcement and fitness advice. Each month we highlight a new member and their progress,” said Joe, adding, “We are a fitness center for all levels, all ages, shapes and sizes from beginners to professional athletes.” Some call the gym, “Fitness for Dummies”, because all you have to do is show up, and the personal training staff shows you how to do the work! From mapping out your fitness workout to motivating you to reach your highest goal and even selling pre-made healthy meals and fitness apparel at the gym; Slash is a one-stop shop! The success stories from members say it all! Members love losing weight and they really love their new physique that comes as a result of the specialized Slash programming. “I have a client who lost 60 pounds, and as a result got off all of her medications. She then moved out of state, fell out of her routine, and gained all of the weight back. Along with the weight gain, came the return of items such as knee braces and her expensive medication. Now that she has moved back and returned to Slash Fitness, she has started to lose the weight, no longer needs her braces, and hopes to be off of all of her medications again soon. She quickly realized that the investment in preventive health is much more appealing and much cheaper than paying for the consequences,” said Austin. There’s a saying at Engel & Völkers Real Estate offices, and it goes like this: “Quality product offerings, premium service and innovative thinking never seem to go out of fashion.”
Though this ambitious assessment of their goals was said by the CEO and President of Engel & Völkers, it’s also the sentiment of Engel & Völkers realtors Lenny Felberbaum and Leanna Fruin. Both Felberbaum and Fruin imbibe the lofty goal of treating clients with utmost re-

spect and creating relationships above and beyond the sales transaction. “Engel & Völkers has a group of exceptional sales people from all over the world. Our primary goal is to earn a client, not necessarily make the sale. We believe in long-term relationships with repeat clients and referrals,” said Fel-
berbaum, whose real estate patronage goes back four generations. Felberbaum’s great grandfather Louis owned and managed property in New York and his grandmother and father followed in the family real estate tradition. After studying finance and real estate development at
University of Miami, Felberbaum developed condos in Miami Beach. You could say that real estate was in his cradle at birth, but Felberbaum has risen above the tide in other realms of the business as well. He tries to match clients with properties that guarantee a perfect fit and is easy going and pleasant. With 40 years of experience in the real estate market Felberbaum knows real estate and its inherent market possibilities from all angles. “I am an advisor, not an agent. I try to fit my client’s lifestyles into what’s available on the market. If they play golf and want to live in a golf community with a social life then that’s what I will find them. We know all the nuances of the different golf club communities and the coastal properties with that pristine beach flair.” Felberbaum also helps real estate investors strategize their long term investments and real estate portfolios. Combine that with the Engel & Völkers European heritage (they have over 500 offices worldwide) and you have a range of options from investment property, rental property or finding your dream home. Leanna Fruin – also a star at Engel & Völkers – has been a licensed real estate broker for the past 20 years. She started out in California, but has been living and working in Delray Beach for the past 15 years. Her focus is on listening to her clients and translating their real estate (or lifestyle) goals into a reality. “I focus more on advising, property should sell itself. There has to be a connection between the clients and their dream property. I don’t want a client to settle for just anything, I want them to have the perfect property for their needs and lifestyle. If we don’t see what they’re looking for then I tell them to wait until we find it,” said Fruin. If you have a desire to start your real estate search right now – it’s the perfect time to indulge in what Delray Beach has to offer. Both Fruin and Felberbaum work together and collaborate to get the most up-to-date information and expertise about what’s on the market and what is being sold at all times. Currently they’re featuring a Grand Bermuda style home with six-bedrooms with designer furnishings and 7,176-square-feet to roam. Located on a private cul-de-sac, the home has six bathrooms, a pool, great room and direct access to the beach. Securing Your Future
GUIDANCE WEALTH MANAGEMENT By diane feen
An FAU graduate in Electrical Engineering, Raymond problem solved for Siemens and Sensormatic, but he had a longing for something more befitting his personality and skill set. Then came his moment of revelation. “My father was a leader in the insurance and financial industry in New York. I decided to follow in his footsteps and over time I knew I could take it to the next level,” said Filorimo, a Boca Raton resident for 41 years. That’s exactly what he did. Raymond rode the escalator of financial knowledge upward and onward. He started in the financial services and insurance business 22 years ago honing his skills at some of the largest financial institutions and opened his own Independent Financial Firm in 2002 helping clients nationwide. “I effectively learned to create Tax Free Wealth and Safety for my clients.” Raymond’s Golden Rules are the following: “I don’t recommend any financial solutions or products that I don’t already use for myself. I am a financial strategist with my hands on the pulse of the stock market, insurance industry, real estate and investment trends. I am a big fan of Tax Free Retirement Strategies because Congress can and will raise Tax Rates thus reducing our Retirement Income.” Clients are not shy about touting his financial skills. “Ray brings a wealth of knowledge to financial planning that is essential

Raymond Filorimo is a financial problem solver. He enjoys clarifying and simplifying family and business financial challenges and has perfected his strategies over the past 22 years.
to be successful today. He’s implemented Tax Free Strategies that have completely changed my portfolio. I have the utmost confidence in Ray’s sound financial advice and look forward to financial freedom and wealth building. I highly recommend him to anyone interested in improving their current financial planning strategy,” said client Michael Reed. Raymond is bullish about one thing when it comes to Finance and Income Protection Strategies, “Volatility often comes during an election year. The key is to calm portfolio volatility without killing growth and income potential. There are proven Tax Free Investment Vehicles that can protect you when the market goes down. It will also protect your principal against loss and gains when the market rises, eliminating financial fluctuation and protecting your retirement lifestyle.” Family Protection Benefit Maximization is another area of his expertise. “When a loved one becomes ill there are an alarming number of expenses,” said Raymond, who learned this firsthand. “The loss of my mother last year was a major eye-opener for me. Custodial Care Cost was $1,300 a week and it went on for over a year. It wasn’t easy for my father, but he was prepared with the financial means to do so. Many are not so lucky.” A long-term illness can wipe out your savings and put the healthy spouse in debt. But Raymond has a few key solutions to give Peace of Mind to you and your family. Special Needs Family Planning is another area of financial planning of utmost importance today. With the dramatic increase of Autism and Alzheimer’s it is imperative that governmental financial assis-
tance be maximized. “If your special needs family member outlives their caretaker it is important to have a legally documented plan in the state where they live, otherwise it’s meaningless. With proper planning we can make sure your loved one wants for nothing, even if family is not there to do it for them. The Master Colorist Returns To Delray
BLONDIES HAIR STUDIO By Diane feen Photos by melissa korman

Reneé Sizemore Lansdown knows that blondes have more fun.
She’s been a blonde herself and helps to propagate the species – in a beautifying way. She can color your hair in any hue you want, but her expertise and overwhelming hero status remains among women who want blonde hair. It doesn’t matter what color you start with, if you want to be a blonde Renee guarantees you’ll love the results. “When a blonde sits in my chair she knows that I’ll do the best job in coloring. I have clients in Texas (where I owned a shop) that won’t let anyone else do their hair. I have a cult-like following,” said Renee, who was rated a top ten colorist in the US by Allure Magazine. To know where Renee is today is to know her past. She trained at Lockworks Academy in Louisiana and apprenticed with the famed hairstylist Todd Dore of Doré Doré

Salon. It was there that Renee learned how to perfect the art of European style highlighting. That, she says, is key to making sure that blondes not only have more fun but more confidence. “All women want to look more youthful and refreshed. The right color can change a woman’s life. When it’s perfect she feels pretty and that gives her more confidence,” said the mother of two little boys. The right color, though an easy thing to verbalize, is not so easy to actualize. That’s why Renee does color correction with the precision of a Picasso. She has seen it all – clients with orange and yellow streaks that are frightful, or dark clumps where they shouldn’t be. In that case Renee assesses the situation and regroups to put back the luster and perfect the blonde allure.
before and after
She did that for new client Veronica Moreno. The beautiful blonde, who recently moved to Delray Beach, had dark streaks in her hair that popped up among her blonde tresses. She came to Renee for a consult and the next day was in her chair for a more blonde experience. “I’m a perfectionist when it comes to color. I discussed my plan to per-
fect Veronica’s hair to the color she wants. I want her to be comfortable with the results.” Not only was Veronica comfortable with the results, she was ecstatic with the color and the European highlighting technique. “I love my hair, Renee did a great job. I was able to trust her with my hair and it looks so much better than before. I don’t see my roots the way I used to. I really like Renee and the vibe of the shop.” Veronica isn’t the only one who looks to Renee for that perfect shade of blonde or blonde highlights. In Texas, where she owned a shop called Aqua Salon and Spa, she was booked three to six months in advance. It’s also where Renee was rated top hair colorist in the state of Texas by Self Magazine. Her popularity is legendary, and her clients continue to be diehard fans. “Renee is absolutely amazing! She’s been cutting and coloring my hair for over 15 years. I get so many compliments on my hair thanks to her wonderful work. I highly recommended Renee and promise you, once you see her amazing work, you’ll never let anyone else color or highlight your hair. She’s the best of the best,” said Dawn Farmer Abeya. Renee has been a hair colorist-stylist her entire life. As a fiveyear-old she was cutting her dolls hair and even recruited her sister as a model hair client. Even though her father had his sights set on seeing his daughter graduate from college with a teaching degree. But Renee had other ideas. “I knew I wanted to go to beauty school ever since I was a small child. I always loved this business. When I get in my car to go to work now I am smiling and excited. I love helping women look amazing, it makes my day.” It also makes Mary Bigler’s day. “I have been going to Renee for over 11 years. Before going to her I hated my hair. It is naturally curly-frizzy and was a drab color and wouldn’t grow. Now my hair is a beautiful blonde, the frizz is gone and it’s long and healthy. Thanks to Renee I had this magical transformation and the hair I have wanted my entire life. Her expertise exceeds expectations.” The good news – for local folks – is that Renee was living in Texas and has now put down roots in South Florida. She is back, working in Delray Beach at “In The Grove Hair Studio.” It’s in this vibrant shop that her clients can relax and watch their hair color go from drab to fab. It’s also a place where blondes know they’re with an expert. “When a blonde sits in my chair she knows I will do the best job. My clients in Texas wouldn’t let anyone else touch their hair. Nine out of ten people who come into my chair never go to anyone else. Once I fix their hair, they come to me forever.” According to Renee she uses seven different color lines. Because of her years of experience coloring hair she knows which product is best for which client. Megan Ardoin learned that firsthand. “I couldn’t live without Renee! Best hair colorist, especially for blondes. She gets it right and natural looking every time. If I’ve ever strayed because I couldn’t get an appointment, I’ve always regretted it. I book months in advance to make sure I get her every time!” Reneé Sizemore Lansdown Blondies Hair Studio In The Grove Hair Studio 215 NE 1st Avenue Delray Beach 713-252-2060

Fite Shavell and Associates unveils new brand,
The Fite Group Luxury Homes By Nicol Jenkins Photos by melissa korman
{
Well known in the Palm Beach Real Estate market, Fite Shavell now has a new brand and a new name: The Fite Group Luxury Homes.
Like the new name, The Fite Group Luxury Homes is growing with the local community. According to founder and principal David Fite, the change from Fite Shavell & Associates is an opportunity to refine and restate the company’s unique position in the Palm Beach and Delray Beach real estate markets. “Our business model is to be more responsive and attentive to clients by eliminating the layers that corporate franchises impose,” Fite says. “We are true locals, rather than local representatives, involved and invested in our communities. We work cooperatively, rather than competitively— which brings results for clients and us. Our

brokers are brand ambassadors. This comprehensive effort brings our attributes to life, and shows why we’re different.” Founded in 2008 and led by David Fite, The Fite Group Luxury Homes is a specialist boutique agency with 100 highachieving brokers focused on the Palm Beaches. Headquartered on North County Road on Palm Beach Island, the firm also has offices in Delray Beach and Palm Beach Gardens. Additionally, Mirasol Realty, the exclusive representatives for The Country Club at Mirasol, is a subsidiary of The Fite Group. “The Fite Group had over $560 million in sales in the last year, and over $2.7 billion
The Fite Group at 1920 S. Ocean Boulevard, Manalapan ($19.5 million)
since the firm opened 7 years ago. What sets us apart is our agents, especially in the Delray Beach market. We are approaching our second anniversary in Delray Beach and we have over 20 agents focusing on Delray, Gulf Stream, Ocean Ridge, and Boca Raton,” said Fite. Their biggest expansion has been their growth and sales in the Delray Beach Real Estate market. “Delray Beach is a booming market and real estate has never been stronger in the area. We are doing so well because we have the top agents and our new marketing program uniquely highlights the homes and the lifestyle of Delray.” The new name is also a natural evolution. “Almost from the beginning, brokers and clients used ‘Fite’ as shorthand,” David notes. Fite believes the streamlined format offers multiple advantages. “The Fite Group is easy to read and remember, which matters in everything from signage to web searches.” Developed in collaboration with The VIA Agency in Portland, Maine, The Fite Group name and new brand image will begin appearing in advertising immediately, with
property brochures and listing presentations in development. The web address is now FiteGroup.com. A redesign is underway, which will touch on everything from the way the site looks to the way it functions. These changes will be introduced in several key phases, with a complete relaunch slated for this summer. “The new branding and marketing campaign has been designed to help us show people what makes us different and why they should partner with us for all their real estate needs,” added Fite. As specialists in luxury real estate, Fite is not simply in a place, but of it. “We are clothed in the fabric of our communities. We believe and are invested in these places and people, this way of life. Which is why we’re the right people to help you feel at home.” To that end, The Fite Group prioritizes relationships over transactions, people over properties. Developing long-term trust is more important than any shortterm gains. Their team of agents takes a biographical approach, asking smart questions, working together to define their cli-
ent’s vision for their life here. Then they use all their resources to get their clients exactly what they require. Another component of The Fite Way is: “While we offer global capabilities, we’ve found that maintaining a boutique size and ethos gives us the flexibility to be extraordinarily nimble and responsive. We’ve built a team of agents with exceptional local knowledge and a commitment to service. Everyone shares expertise and information in order to meet our clients’ goals, which ultimately helps us achieve our own. If you find yourself nodding in agreement with the way we work, we’re the people you’ll want to do business with!” When you partner with Fite, you’re taking an important step in fulfilling your plans for you, your family and future generations. Fite believes it’s their privilege to help bring those plans to life in the places they’re proud to call home. PURO’S CIGAR SHOP Where Friendship And Cigars Intersect By diane feen

photos by melissa korman
It’s been said that the camaraderie of smoking a cigar is a time honored tradition that has brought together enemies, formed alliances and created life-long friendships. Eduardo, Jesus and Lisbeth Garcia would agree.
The Garcia’s are the mastermind behind the tiny cigar shop on Atlantic Avenue with the large footprint. Cigar lovers from all corners of the globe congregate there with a lust for life and cigars. “Puro’s is a sanctuary for us. All the pressures of life are left behind, and it’s a place where guys can talk about guy things,” said Joe, a real estate developer who lives in Boca Raton. Joe isn’t the only one who finds the restorative power of Puro’s miraculous. Steve Buday, a retired IT Systems executive, not only considers Puro’s his neighborhood shop, but also his home away from home. “The people here make it special. Eduardo makes you feel like you’re part of the family.” Buday is right. Puro’s is a family of sorts. Grown men (and a few women) are drawn there by the huge hearts of the Garcia’s and the wonderful selection of cigars. But make no mistake; the camaraderie is part and parcel of this popular place with the outdoor umbrellas and wood paneled interior. Just recently they had their annual anniversary party. Unlike most business parties that are punctuated by brie cheese, crackers and wine this one is a feast to behold. The Garcia’s put up a large tent and guests get to indulge in fresh homemade barbequed skirt steak, chicken, rice, salad and homemade desserts. It’s a festive affair punctuated by music and friendly banter. But this year Lisbeth was contemplating forgoing the party. But that thought was canceled pretty quickly as the anniversary rolled around. “A few weeks before the party we got calls from New York, Miami and Canada. Everyone wanted to know when the party was. This is a tradition and people look forward to

it each year. It is a lot of work, but the people are so nice and everyone makes it such a happy occasion that the energy kept me going until 4 am,” said Lisbeth, the matriarch of the Garcia family and the Puro’s family. They also had a special event last month that highlighted the star-status of the Ashton Symmetry Cigar. Rated as the 8th best cigar by Cigar Aficionado the Ashton sales rep Jose Ortega showed up to introduce his prodigy. And of course there was a culinary aspect to the event. “I only told three people about it and 25 people came. It was like a small party. I made gourmet sandwiches for everyone and it was a great day,” said Lisbeth.
If you ask Buday or Joe they’ll tell you that there’s a party at Puro’s every day. It just has a more social and intellectual bent. “This place is like a social club. We solve world peace and give each other golf tips,” said Buday. Joe sees this cigar playground as more of a men’s club. “We talk about the stock market, politics, sports and golf. Puro’s has a fantastic selection of cigars and if they don’t one I want they’ll order it for me.” Puro’s has most premium cigar brands and makes sure that every top- rated cigar is among their stable of smokes. They not only have a private label brand of cigars, but also brands such as Padron, Ashton, The Griffin’s,
E b

Montecristo, Arturo Fuente, My Father Cigars, Romeo y Julieta, Rocky Patel and others. Puro’s also sells pipe tobacco in different flavors and blends, lighters, varying size humidors and cigar accessories. They also have My Father Cigars celebrated Cigar Le Bijou and Davidoff’s Avo Syncro. The consensus among Puro’s fans (called the Brothers of the Leaf) is that many cigar bars don’t have the friendly banter that is so cherished at Puro’s. “At some cigar bars people keep to themselves and don’t discuss things, we come here to talk,” said Dave, who calls Puro’s common ground where men can meet from Yale to Jail. Retired bank president Roger just found that out. He started coming recently with his friend Stanley. “We have interesting conversations, the cigars and prices are good and the people are pleasant,” said Roger, a spry octogenarian. Roger and his friend Stanley used to savor their cigars by the Intracoastal, but now hang their hats (metaphorically speaking) at Puro’s. If all the world is a humidor then Puro’s is its playground of euphoria.

Delray Students First Making A Difference in Delray By Linda brown

Mark Sauer is as focused and as passionate a person as you are likely to ever find.
After a career that took him to the highest heights of sports and business --including stints as President of the Pittsburgh Pirates and president of the St. Louis Blues--Sauer “retired” to Delray Beach. Only his version of retirement is a lot different than the stereo typical retiree. No early birds for Sauer. Not many days spent lounging on a golf course and certainly no time wasted complaining about life’s little grievances. Instead Sauer has devoted his time to men-
toring, tutoring, coaching and caring for Delray’s most vulnerable children. Many are teenagers who are talented but struggle financially or with difficult Family situations. Others struggle academically but excel in other areas such as athletics. Spend any time with Sauer and you’ll see how frenetic his life can be. His phone rings or buzzes with texts from students needing one thing or another and frankly Sauer would have it no other way.

“We’ve come a long way in the last several years,” he said over a recent lunch. “But we could be doing so much more and we need to be doing so much more”. Board member Leo Ressa, a retired financial executive from New York agrees. “We can make a big difference but we need to be able to scale.” he said. “We need to be able to take this to the next level”. Indeed. Sauer and company have done a good job to date; they have impacted the lives of students who without their assistance would have had a very difficult time getting into college. Delray Students First has partnered with area nonprofits building relationships with the City of Delray Beach, the Achievement Centers for Children and Families, Dare2 Be Great and other entities. The relationships have enabled Delray Students First to achieve some truly impressive accomplishments. A donated classroom is used to tutor, and Dare 2 Be Great has provided scholarships and additional mentoring services to Delray Student First kids. Sauer and Ressa are deeply grateful for the partnerships and connections. But it’s a strug-
gle to pay a teacher and to provide other services to get students ready for college. As experienced businessmen, they know that at some point they need to grow the organization, solidify its finances and become a stable and steady resource that local kids can count on—for the long haul. For Delray Beach, the challenge is not a new one. Despite pockets of great wealth there remains deep poverty in the city. Often the two communities—rich and struggling-- don’t interact. For example, there are students who live in Delray’s impoverished neighborhoods who have never been downtown or to the beach. Many have never sampled a meal at one of Atlantic Avenue’s posh restaurants or shopped on East Atlantic Ave. Sauer and his small but dedicated army have moved to fill those gaps offering students experiences as well as tutoring. There have been fishing excursions, airboat rides and shopping trips in addition to tutoring and more formal services. But as always there is the need for stabilization and to serve ever more kids. “There is so much more that we can do if we had some funding and commitment for fund-
ing behind us,” says Sauer. “We can make a real difference in these kids’ lives. We can make a real difference for the future of Delray Beach.” Sauer and Ressa actively fundraise yapping old business connections and hosting fundraisers. But to truly succeed Delray students first needs a large contribution a big hit. Then the organization can scale and concentrate on its mission not its survival. Sauer and Ressa see the organization as an investment in Delray and in the next generation of community leaders and solid citizens. There have been positive examples. Tre Quan Smith is a Delray Students First success story. He is excelling as a wide receiver at the University of Central Florida after receiving six years of tutoring from the organization. He is widely considered a top NFL prospect. Others have succeeded academically at places like FAU and other state schools. Currently, two students are serving as environmental fellows at Pine Jog Environmental Center. “We can do this”, says Sauer. “We just need someone who will believe in us and give us the financial resources to do with this organization when I know we can do it this organization”. Polo isn’t just a game. It’s a way of life. Boca Raton had a proud history of high-goal polo from 1955 to 2008. Alas the land at Clint Moore and Jog Roads just became too valuable and was sold for development as a gated community.
The International Polo Club Palm Beach has approximately 20 times the area of Royal Palm Polo Club on its sprawling fields in Wellington. The 13th season of high-goal polo continues through April 24. DNA PROPERTIES Decades of Real Estate Experience By nicol jenkins

In just one short year, DNA PROPERTIES broker David Marulli has succeeded in securing a name for himself and his team in the prosperous and competitive Delray Beach Real Estate Market.
Located on Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Delray Beach, David Marulli brings decades of experience in commercial and residential real estate to the table, along with a fresh outlook on customer service. DNA PROPERTIES is becoming known for providing unparalleled attention to all of their clients. David’s background of successful real estate transactions combined with a full service real estate experience has catapulted the firm into the luxury Delray Beach real estate market. “In our first year of business, we have reached $10 million in commercial and residential real estate sales. DNA PROPERTIES attributes their success to their customer service, market knowledge and quick response times. We are very accessible and develop loyalty and

trust with each of our clients,” said David. “DNA PROPERTIES offers par excellence service to all of our clients. We are here for you.” Choosing a Real Estate firm that will work hard to represent your best interests is not easy. Delray Beach residents and visitors are choosing the real estate professionals at DNA PROPERTIES to assist them with their real estate transactions. David illustrates his trusted outlook, “With years of combined experience in both residential and commercial real estate, we know what we are doing. We put ourselves and our clients into a position of strength to maximize their transactions and investments.” Real Estate is second nature to David Marulli. Coming from a family in real estate, David caught the bug early on. He started in 1995
with leasing shopping centers and managing acquisitions in Palm Beach County. “This provided me with solid experience in acquisitions, negotiating, time management, contracts, and construction.” he said. “Having a 20 year perfect track record of helping investors identify and close on multi-million dollar income producing properties is not something you learn in school. It takes hard work and lots of experience” In 2003, David ventured into residential real estate in Vermont and New Hampshire where he aligned himself with top producers to learn the ins and outs of residential real estate transactions. “Working on the residential side of real estate taught me different types of customer service and how to dig into each sale,” added
David. “To be successful, your clients need to know you understand them, care about them, and that you can handle the vast array of responsibilities a Realtor has to get a deal closed. When you do this for a living, it’s easy to forget the emotional ups and downs a buyer or seller may feel. We work very hard to connect to clients and help them feel like they are standing on solid ground. Our clients know they are in good hands and that helps make the process less scary and more of a learning experience.” David moved back to Palm Beach County in 2008, and continues real estate on the commercial side. In 2014, David decided to open his own real estate firm, DNA PROPERTIES, (D stands for David, N for his wife Nicole, and A for his daughter Ava), in his hometown of Delray Beach. “We live in Delray Beach and know Delray inside and out, we know the homes, and the area. My background in both commercial and residential real estate helps me encompass a wider range of this market,” said David. “As a matter of fact I bought my first home in Delray Beach in 1998. It’s incredible how this area has appreciated since then. That house was on NW 5th Ave in Lake Ida. It was in great condition with a large lot and I bought it just under 170K. That home today would sell for over 800K.” In 2016, DNA PROPERTIES is looking to double their business and expand their staff of real estate professionals, which now includes seasoned agent Angie Weaver and Office Manager Gianna D’Alessandro. They are working on purchasing a commercial property in East Delray which will provide the firm with a larger office space to allow for growth. DNA PROPERTIES currently has a property under contract off Federal Highway close to George Bush Blvd. If all goes according to plan, they will close on it in March. “I listen to my clients and help them achieve their goals and have been providing real estate
services since 1995. With a wide range of experience, involving over 600 million dollars of residential and commercial transactions, I am an expert negotiator with superb contract knowledge. My main focus remains to help residential sellers and buyers in Delray Beach, and to continue to work the commercial end by connecting investors with locating and purchasing income-producing properties throughout South Florida,” said David. His staff is proud of the success for the year in business and clients praise David and his team at DNA PROPERTIES. “We wanted a second home in East Delray
and contacted David. Because of the logistics of buying from out of state and the competitive market, we tested David’s knowledge, flexibility and patience. We truly enjoyed spending time with David and are very happy with the property we acquired through his efforts. He gauged every step of the process perfectly and put in extra time and effort while keeping it pleasant and in perspective,” said one satisfied client. “I worked with David Marulli on buying three properties over a two year period. He was very responsive to all of my needs and took the time to understand what I was looking for and why. I found his experience in rental properties to be invaluable. We spent a lot of time together trying to find the right fit and his feedback all along the way helped immensely. David will definitely take the time to find out your desires and work hard to make sure he finds the property that fits your needs. The type of realtor that you will invite to your family’s Thanksgiving dinner,” added another happy client. The New Downtown Manager Of Delray
JAMAEL STEWART By Diane Feen
{
Popular wisdom says it takes a village to raise a child.
No one knows this better than Jamael Stewart. While in middle school Stewart didn’t take his education or his future very seriously. He admits to being a jokester and occasionally doing things that he was not proud of. But his irreverence was not a pesky problem for too long.
“This city is small, but it’s also big. When I was headed down the wrong path people in town would say to me, ‘I know your family, don’t do what you’re doing,’” said Stewart who was born and raised in Carver Estates in Delray Beach. It was in high school at Olympic Heights High that Stewart began to see life in a more optimistic light. He excelled academically and was positively influenced by life inside and outside the classroom. “I began to see the difference between my life and what I saw around me in high school. There were nice homes, paved streets, green grass and clean communities. My school was welcoming and my teachers focused on teaching, not disciplining. I was eager to figure out how to adjust academically and socially to this new world.” It didn’t take Stewart too long to adjust. As a matter of fact, he did quite well in high school and went on to graduate from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach. From there Stewart worked with Breakthrough Miami, a non-profit academic enrichment program that provides middle-school students from underserved communities with the tools they need to achieve and go onto college. It was at Breakthrough Miami that Stewart got to put into practice his dreams and ideals of helping underprivileged students learn what it takes to be good citizens and achieve success in their lives. “A lot of what young people look up to today is materialistic. I try to instill good core values into young people. It’s especially important that young men know how to communicate, how to treat women and the importance of a good education,” said Stewart who won the 2013 Educator’s Award,
104 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
the Jim Moran African American Achievers Award and the Legacy Award for Top 40 under 40 Young Black Professionals. Stewart’s mentoring skills (and passion for education) were put to the test once again when he cofounded Prep & Sports with his local hero Tavarius Jackson (TJ). The two men created the premiere educational mentoring program for local students who need help passing tests and doing well in school. “It is humbling to guide these students through obstacles that are in place because of their economic status. My reward is watching them overcome social and economic barriers, graduate high school and take on the challenges of college.” As of January 4th Stewart has a new challenge to tackle. But everyone knows Stewart is up to the task. “Jamael is a true leader in the community. He has worked so hard to get where he is today and has an incredible positive attitude that is infectious,” said Attorney Lee Cohen. That positive ‘can do’ attitude and managerial expertise is the reason that Stewart was chosen to head up the Clean and Safe Program in the Community Improvement Department. This new position is not quite in the same form as his previous job, but it utilizes Stewarts mentoring expertise to a tee. Instead of children, Stewart’s boundless energy and enthusiasm will be dispersed strategically around much of the commercial (and some residential areas) in Delray. “The Clean and Safe Program is from I-95 to A1A one block North and South. I will be making sure the landscaping is up to code, the lights are working and the streets are clean and safe. I also
network with business owners keeping Delray looking great is a marriage between us all. I love this city and want people to be wowed when they get off of the highway to come to Delray.” That’s why Stewart often starts his day by 6:30 am checking to see if there’s trash left on the street or trees needing to be trimmed. When not keeping a watchful eye on the cities bevy of beautification (and safety) he is working on a plan to keep the area West of Swinton on Atlantic Avenue up to the same beautification level. Stewart has learned a lot since his days at Pine Grove Elementary School. He credits a lot of his growth and maturity to his mother Valerie, dad James as well as his aunts, uncles and sisters. “My mom worked two and three jobs and my sisters (Aloysia and Nakiema) and my grandmothers Hattie and Janet helped raise me. We are a tight knit family,” said the strapping six-foottall fellow with the firm handshake and impeccable dress code. What also makes Stewart such a compelling figure is his innate badge of honor – one of gratitude. “To whom much is given much is expected. If I don’t reach out to other kids my blessings will stop here. I was given a lot so I could pass it along to others.” You could say Stewart has imbibed this well honed philosophy. “Jamael was my former supervisor at Breakthrough Miami. I learned a lot from him. He is dedicated, hard working and mentors many people. He always has a positive outlook on life (or difficult situations) and loves his family. I am thankful to have learned from him professionally and pleased to call him a friend,” said Kierra J. Smith, Senior Site Director of Miami Country Day School for Breakthrough Miami. When not making sure that Delray (and its citizens) are on the right path, Stewart can be found spending time with his family, walking his dog (Luke), fishing or hunting. But one thing for sure he’ll be setting a good example for his peers and for those who need his guidance.

PRIME
STEAK ITALIAN SUSHI
Go For The Flavor And Stay For The Fun By Diane Feen
{
There have been some changes to this grandiose restaurant over the past few years. For starters they moved from the Avenue to a few blocks south on 2nd Avenue.
But the fun and classy classic atmosphere pervades. They have the same art deco mural on the wall, the same glamorous Italian Alabaster glass chandeliers that make you think of Hollywood and the same vibrational essence that ethereally spells romance. If you’re looking for a restaurant that is calming, elegant and sophisticated look no further. They have a piano in the main dining room with live music Wednesday and Friday nights. Add that to the private wine room, wood paneled dining room, elegant bar and celestial window coverings and you have a supper club atmosphere guaranteed to make you feel good. There are other new improvements at this beautiful restaurant that calls forth another time and place (1940’s Hollywood) and it’s the staff. Owner Steve Pellegrino has

passed a portion of the torch to his children Steve Jr. and Nicole. Prime continues their tradition of serving prime steaks that sizzle with flavor. Their 22-ounce Ribeye Delmonico is excellent cooked over a wood grill and dry aged. “The steak is marbleized and has bone-in flavor,” said Steve Jr. Also a taste maker is their 14-ounce New York Strip Steak done to your perfection. This new incarnation of an old favorite continues to be their selection of fresh sushi dishes. According to Steve Jr. they recently hired a world renowned sushi chef who is not only a pro in the kitchen but also a literary hero on the subject. The sushi has become some of their most popular dishes with favorites including Crab Cakes with spicy Tuna Jams, Hawaiian Tuna Poke (which is Tuna, Avocado and Mango with a Sweet Spicy Hawaiian sauce). The Black Widow Roll is excellent and is made with soft shell Crab Tempura, Asparagus, Avocado, Eel Sauce and Spicy Aioli. They also added a Sashimi platter with Tuna, Hamachi and Salmon. For starters they have a wonderful Jumbo Shrimp and Lump Crab Cocktail with their secret Gin-cocktail Sauce. Also excellent are Prime’s meaty fresh Maryland Style Crab Cakes with roasted corn sauce and julienne vegetables. There’s no fillers just fresh tasty crab in this appetizer, and that’s so authentic and tasty. An old favorite at this glamorous restaurant is their Prime Meatballs made Tuscan style with roasted peppers and shaved Pecorino. On the Prime Italian side of the menu there are choices that range from
Prime Lobster Roll
Prime Supper Club Pork Chops to Guiseppi Cocco Rigatoni Braciole and Meatballs. The Veal Saltimbocca is extremely tasty with an execution unique to this traditional veal dishes. Unlike some of its contemporaries this is made without the heavy essence of its namesake. The veal is rolled with Prosciutto, Mozzarella and Spinach in a tasty Mushroom Demi- glace that is refreshing. For the Seafood lover they have Seafood Fra Diavolo that is made with Shrimp, Scallops, Calamari and Clams in a spicy tomato sauce with linguine. Another great dish on the menu – that is very popular with guests – is the grilled Jumbo Scallops with Creamy Asparagus Risotto and Parmesan crisp. Wednesday Night is a very special night at Prime. The reason is its “All You Can Eat Stone Crab Claw Night.” For only $59 you get all the stone crab claws you can eat with soup, salad and chef side. A reservation is required to attend this popular seafaring event that starts at 6pm and goes until 10 pm. Prime customer Nick had this to say about the evening. “I went to the “all you can eat” stone crab night at Prime and I can’t begin to tell you how pleased I was. The service, ambiance and food were excellent. They were the most delicious stone crabs I’ve ever had, so tender and sweet I couldn’t get enough. The waiter brought out 15 claws on the plate, which is unheard of. I can’t wait to go back.” They also have a wonderful Happy Hour from 4pm to 8pm at the bar. If you’re ready for a time travel experience indulge your senses in their outdoor dining area and bars. This luscious tropical oasis is nothing short of enchanting, and is the perfect setting for pro-
posing to your sweetheart or asking your boss for a raise. It’s also the perfect spot for a drink or dinner with out-of-town guests or family. On Friday and Saturday evenings after 9:30 the Outdoor Garden and three bars turns into their well known nightclub IL BACIO. That’s when the music gets cranked up and the night turns into a flurry of activity and joviality. If you’re looking for a place to cater an event, be it a Wedding, Engagement Party, Bar Mitzvah, Family Reunion, Corporate affair or Special Event, think of Prime. The elegance of your surroundings will add to the perfection of the evening. They have a stateof-the-art sound system, intelligent lighting, 10’x10’ LED screen and Laser Light Show. If you need Live Music, DJ, Dancers, Stilt walkers, Fire Performers, Percussionist, Serving or security staff, tents, decorations, ice sculptures or theme party planning they’ll have it all waiting for you. Before you leave for the evening try one of their decadent desserts. The Double Fudge Chocolate Brownie has Haagan Daz Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, walnuts and whipped cream and will send you into a tizzy of elation. Their signature dessert is Chocolate Bread Pudding and Vanilla Gelato. If you want to feel the essence of Humphrey Bogart and experience the Romance of the Golden Age head over to Prime and enjoy the evening. Can Giardia, Worms, Heartworm, & Intestinal Parasites be a Human Threat?
T
he fact that our pets can harbor and transmit parasites to their human family can be a concern in keeping all of us healthy. Actually it can also work in reverse as we can transmit our ailments to our pets as well although our hygiene practices are very different. Roundworms, hookworms and others are transmitted by contaminated soil and feces. Many of the protozoa parasites such as Coccidia and Giardia can be spread in the same manner and can also be consumed from contaminated water in puddles. So how do we protect and ourselves against these threats and possible illnesses? Are they curable or preventable? The answer is yes. They are treatable, curable and preventable as well. The first line of defense against any threat to any living body is a strong, healthy immune system supported by a species appropriate diet and a healthy digestive tract. There are no drugs or remedies that prevent us from contracting these vermin. These threats are present all around us in nature daily. If we weaken ourselves or our pet’s immune system with chemicals, toxins and inappropriate diets, we set the stage for
possible infestation of these parasites. The healthy body has a number of natural defense systems designed to handle these types of threats on an ongoing basis. In most cases when the infection is induced, the immune system handles it and it disappears. Yes, there may be a loose stool or an episode of diarrhea for elimination but then it is cured naturally by the body itself. Now what happens if you are feeding your pet an inappropriate diet of commercial pet foods such as kibble and canned mystery foods and using toxic drugs for “prevention” of various parasites? Doctors and veterinarians will prescribe various synthetic poisons to kill the parasites but they also kill good intestinal flora needed for digestion as well as cells in the whole digestive tract. These poisons are also filtered through the liver, kidney and lymphatic system and can subsequently destroy these organs as well. Diagnosis is a non-invasive fecal exam but should be performed in a testing laboratory, not in a clinic as this can result in up to a 30% false positive. If the results are positive, do not panic! There are a number natural herbs and botanicals that have been use successfully for generations to rid these
bad guys. Animals in the wild regularly self medicate themselves with these natural botanicals to treat themselves instinctively. Prevention for your pet and yourself is to feed your immune system with clean, drug free foods, species appropriate of course and to detoxify and support both your pets and your body with the appropriate botanicals. We all use herbs and spices in our meals and it is as simple as just adding in the appropriate ones to protect our overall health. The natural universe has provided every living creature with the right species, specific nutrition, the adaptation to our environment and all the natural cures ever needed. The key is to open our eyes, seek those with the knowledge of nature and then open our minds of what this universe provides for us! We are here for you with the answers. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe. com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. We can be reached at Fiesta Pet Deli or www. ARTS â•‘ Beyond the Business Card
Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.

No better group exemplifies the commitment and pride of the Delray business community as much as the Ambassadors. Their engagement with citizens and events throughout the City serves as a beacon to the heights for which we can achieve. Surviving Valentine’s Day
{
By Robert V and Marie T
Just as we are recovering from the Holiday Trifecta (Thanksgiving/ Christmas-Hanukkah/New Year’s Eve) - Valentine’s Day comes around. As if we aren’t already busy (feeling guilty for) breaking our Resolutions. Let’s get through this and look forward to March Madness and St. Patrick’s Day - no dates required for those “holidays”!
He Said
Surviving the Valentine’s Day single. Here are some ways of coping with being single during this (blech!) day celebrating romance and love. Do some research. Know (and tell your friends) the true origin of Valentine’s Day. February 14 marks the event of the execution of St. Valentine by Roman Emperor Claudius II. C2 as we call him, prohibited marriage because, as we all know, married men make terrible soldiers. If you can’t lift yourself up, bring the entire room down to you. Misery loves company. Have a ME day. Treat yourself to a spa-ahhhh day. While your friends are scrambling to buy flowers and cards and make dinner reservations, you can be relaxing with a cucumber facial and massage. Oh, if only the poor saps who forgot to prepare could see you now. Good luck standing in line at Sizzler, suckers! Turn off your phone! Lock away your contact list and DO NOT drunk dial exes who you convince yourself “weren’t so bad”. They were. In fact, whatever made you run in the first place has probably only gotten worse with age. Four cats become six, six cats become 12... You can’t fix crazy. There we go, feel good about yourself. Celebrate your singleness and shout from the roof tops “I am glad to be single”. Just don’t stand too close to the edge when you do it.
She Said
I’ve never really been a fan of this pseudo holiday. For one, I don’t eat chocolate - the official “food” of V-Day. Then there’s the pressure of buying just the right card. For me
138 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
this usually means an hour or so, at several stores, reading EVERY SINGLE card before buying just the right one for my SO (Significant Other). And, anyone in the service industry will tell you it’s one of THE worst nights to go out to dinner. I always preferred staying in on V-Day, cooking a meal together or ordering take out, and snuggling on the couch. Actually - I prefer doing that most evenings. With that said - being single on the day that celebrates couples, love, and commitment is not easy. So, here are a few ways that I will consider getting through this. Stay in with fellow single friends. Pop corn, watch (unromantic) movies, and avoid the Hallmark Channel. Let’s not forget wine. Lots of it. Many laughs will hopefully follow.
Meet up for Happy Hour. Can’t go wrong here! It’s guaranteed happy - and surely longer than an hour. Most places offer 2-4-1 drinks and half off appetizers. Who needs a date when you can have truffle fries and a nice Pinot Noir? A couple of hours later and you’ll forget all about the 14th. Make sure to leave before the “happy couples” arrive for a pre-dinner cocktail. Go shopping. Two words - Retail Therapy. The malls and supermarkets are sure to be empty! Or, full of other singles trying to keep busy. Hmmm... I see that purse I’ve been drooling over in my future. I’ll be my own Valentine - Ahhh...I feel better already! With the date quickly approaching, and no prospect in sight, I’m leaning towards option 2. Fries and wine.

Our Responsibility to the Future
{
I came across a magnificent story a few weeks back in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
It was a story about a “one man redevelopment machine”, an older gentleman who fell in love with the beat up town of Foxburg in Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Where others saw blight, Dr. Arthur Steffee saw beauty. So he put his money and his convictions where his heart was, buying up old buildings and opening businesses such as a winery, a pizza shop and other retail stores. At age 83, chances are Dr. Steffee won’t be around to enjoy a return on his investment. At least in the conventional sense. But in the more important measures–heart, soul, satisfaction and love–he most surely will. Dr. Steffee embodies the mindset of a steward–the type of leader who understands that his or her role is to leave a place better off than when you find it. It’s a simple concept really. But it requires selflessness, vision, fortitude, patience and a long term view of leadership too often lacking in our society. “We will never get out of it what we put into it,” he said. “The point is to leave something behind.” Yes it is. That’s the whole point. Over the holiday break we went to see the movie “Brooklyn” which chronicles the experience of a young Irish immigrant who leaves her home and her family for a new life in America. The film is achingly beautiful. You literally find yourself tearing up for most of its two hour running time. Not because the film is especially sad, but because it rings so true and it captures the homesickness, sacrifice and strength of our immigrant relatives who risked it all so that we–future generations –could enjoy the opportunities of America. I thought of my own grandparents who 142 February 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Foxburg , PA
came from Russia, Poland and Latvia not speaking English or having any marketable skills other than a tremendous work ethic, unfathomable strength and a desire for their children and grandchildren to be here in the land of opportunity. My wife’s mother came from a tiny village in Italy as a teenager leaving behind all that she knew for a taste of America. In my family, within one generation, we experienced a fair amount of success. My father, a first generation American went to an Ivy League college and enjoyed a long and successful career as a pharmacist and businessman. My wife’s mom became a widow at a young age and raised five children all of whom have experienced success in this country. Stewards and our immigrant parents and grandparents believe our lives should be about creating opportunity–to leave something behind as the good doctor in
Foxburg, PA., says. It’s not all about us, our pet peeves, personal drive times, annoyances and tastes. Sure, we can’t ignore the present but we need to focus our present on creating opportunities for others in the future. That’s our jobs. If we do so, history will treat us kindly and reward those who will benefit from our vision, sacrifices and hard work. If we ignore the future, it will surely bite us and our children. “We will never get out of it what we put into it”, said the doctor. Maybe, but in many ways we will. The point is to leave something behind.
