elcome to the August issue, and I trust that you’re all keeping well.

Since we last went to press, regulations regarding the use of face coverings have come into play, and it’s now mandatory to wear masks whilst out and about in shops, restaurants (for takeaways) and in other public spaces. Whilst reaction to the move has been mixed, if it helps to keep a second wave at bay, then I’m sure the ends justify the means.

However, Government rules regarding the use of face coverings in workplaces has been less conclusive, and as such, many of our readers have expressed concern and confusion relating to how they should proceed at their place of work.

Advice issued earlier in the year by ECA/BESA regarding face coverings states that, “If face coverings are selected… there should be collective use where possible (maximising those in a ‘close proximity’ group who wear a face covering)”.

Going further than the Government guidance, ECA/BESA added that workplace face coverings should be distributed by the employer, along with instructions for use, maintenance, replacement, and disposal. However,

Lighting ‘homemade’ or ‘site improvised’ face coverings or visors are not advisable.

But in line with the COVID-19 Secure guidelines, the ECA/BESA guidance concludes by noting that “employers or employees should not rely solely on face coverings. Other measures must first be deployed, to mitigate the risk from COVID-19 as far as reasonably practicable”.

However, as you’ll see in this month’s news pages, some 63% of engineering services businesses are having sustained difficulty in obtaining suitable face masks for use on site, which presents even further challenges. Find out further findings from this rather concerning report on page 8.

There are other elements to consider, of course – although I must admit that a potential fire safety risk of alcohol-containing hand sanitiser caught me somewhat by surprise. There’s full details of this story, along with additional COVID-19 updates, throughout our news pages.

INDUSTRY NEWS CONSTRUCTION WORKERS DEPRESSED AND SUICIDAL Half of SME construction businesses (50%) say that their employees have suffered health issues due to late or unfair payment issues, according to a new YouGov survey commissioned by ECA and BESA. The construction sector fared badly compared to 11 other sectors of the economy surveyed, including manufacturing, real estate, and healthcare. Overall, construction was the second worst for health issues caused by payment and contractual issues, after the legal sector (53%).

Decision-makers at SME construction businesses reported the following mental health issues, due to issues such as late payment and mid-contract changes to terms: • Four in 10 (40%) say employees suffered from stress • Almost one in five (18%) say employees suffered from depression • Around one in six (17%) say employees suffered anxiety and /or panic attacks • 3% say employees had suicidal thoughts • 1% say employees had attempted suicide Debbie Petford, BESA Director of Legal & Commercial, remarks, “These sobering statistics show our industry was already facing a huge mental health crisis before the COVID-19 pandemic placed additional and unforeseen pressures on the payment landscape.

“We know that poor and unfair payment practices only perpetuate the mental health issues facing employers and employees and we echo the calls from all parts of the industry for people to work together in a constructive and collaborative manner to minimise unnecessary conflicts and disputes in these unprecedented times.”

The survey also found that contractual issues in construction caused a variety of other challenges to SME business viability, including inability to grow the firm (21%), lower productivity (12%) and lack of means to repair or replace faulty equipment (12%).

The Construction Leadership Council’s coronavirus contractual taskforce has produced best practice guidance for industry to reduce contractual disputes. The CLC has also advocated fair contractual and payment practices and a focus on mental health in its ‘Roadmap to Recovery’ vision.

MAKE THE SWITCH WITH CONTACTLESS LIGHTING BEG Lighting Controls is highlighting the importance of safer ‘contactless light switching’ to electrical contractors and their customers – and is also explaining how it can help deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientists have made it clear that the coronavirus can live on surfaces for hours, and light switches are one of the many ways the disease can be transmitted. However, as businesses look at introducing products to the market which can help slow the spread of the virus and avoid a ‘second wave’, manually touching light switches can easily be avoided by automatic motion or occupancy sensors.

Paul Jones, Sales Director for UK & Ireland at BEG Lighting Controls, says, “It’s a fact that if many different people have to use the same light switch, there is a health risk associated with it – but contactless light switching solves this issue.

“It was concluded very early on during the pandemic that COVID-19 is extremely contagious, so by converting light switches to contactless, this is a much more hygienic solution for businesses in order to keep staff and customers safe, and in an educational environment, for teachers and students.

“Unlike standard light switches, BEG occupancy sensors activate the lighting as soon as movement is detected, so touching the product is not necessary at all. ANDY JOHNSON TO HELP SHAPE TCI SECTOR For many companies in the electrotechnical sector, Trade Credit Insurance (TCI) is an essential ingredient in their dealings with suppliers, and it gives much-needed confidence to enter into contracts.

But due to COVID-19 and increasing cashflow difficulties, businesses have faced the risk of credit insurance being withdrawn, or premiums increasing to unaffordable levels.

In early June, the Government announced that Trade Credit Insurance will receive up to £10 billion of government guarantees. This Trade Credit Reinsurance Scheme, which has been agreed following extensive discussions with the insurance sector, will see the majority of TCI coverage maintained across the UK. The EDA welcomes the Scheme and is delighted that EDA Board

Member and MD of LEW Electrical Distributors, Andy Johnson, has joined the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) Insurance and Surety Working Group, that will help to shape the package to shore up the TCI sector.

The Working Group has issued a new guidance document for

businesses, which is available to download via the EDA’s COVID-19 Hub at eda.org.uk.

“Many construction and maintenance supply chain businesses, including electrical wholesalers, builder’s merchants, manufacturers and suppliers, use TCI,” explains Andy.

“It gives them the confidence to trade with one another, providing protection when customers do not pay their debts owed for products or services.

“This new guidance aims to provide practical advice and considerations for discussions with brokers and insurers when seeking TCI. It also provides an outline of the TCI Reinsurance Scheme between Government and insurers.

“I am delighted to be a part of the new Working Group to bring our sector’s voice to the table.”

CONSTRUCTION TALENT RETENTION SCHEME ANNOUNCED The Government has moved to secure the vital talent needed to build the UK’s recovery from COVID-19, protecting employment for thousands of people working in the construction sector.

Announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, the Construction Talent Retention Scheme is a partnership between the Government and industry to secure essential talent in the UK construction sector.

Formally launched at the end of July, the Construction Talent Retention Scheme is an online portal that supports redeployment of staff at risk of redundancy across the sector, while also enabling temporary employee loans between businesses. The scheme gives displaced workers from other sectors a route to find new employment in construction.

ECA CEO Steve Bratt, who is a member of the CLC coronavirus taskforce, comments, “ECA supports the construction talent retention scheme as a further mechanism for keeping people employed and retaining valuable skills within the industry. The key to ensuring this works for employers will be in the detail, which we look forward to contributing to.

“Engineering and electrotechnical skills are vital for delivering housing and infrastructure, as well as decarbonising and digitalising the economy. It is therefore key that as many skilled workers as possible are retained in employment or active work within the industry.”

The not-for-profit programme now has funding secured until the end of the financial year, providing a free online platform for any organisation looking to hire, while ensuring that candidates’ skills and experience are given a prominent platform within the industry.

INDUSTRY NEWS OVER SIX IN 10 BUSINESSES STRUGGLING TO OBTAIN RPE Over six in 10 engineering services businesses (63%) are having ‘sustained difficulty’ in obtaining suitable face masks (FFP3) for use on site, according to a new survey from ECA, BESA, SELECT, SNIPEF, LEIA and the CICV Forum.

Of these businesses struggling to obtain FFP3 masks, 15% said their situation was ‘impossible’, and 36% said it was ‘highly challenging’.

Additionally, over four in 10 respondents (44%) said they were having ‘sustained difficulty’ in obtaining FFP2 masks for use on site, with 10% of businesses reporting they had encountered faulty or counterfeit respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

37% said the current RPE situation had caused them to ‘delay their activity’, with 3% saying it had ‘already caused them to lose work’. However, more than one in five businesses (21%) said that they were taking steps to adjust by ‘redesigning our work to avoid respiratory hazards’.

NEW ‘EXPERIENCED WORKER ASSESSMENT’ LAUNCHED A new assessment process to recognise electricians’ existing skills and experience has been launched by the electrotechnical industry.

The ‘Experienced Worker Assessment’ (EWA), which will replace the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment, accredits occupational competence for people who have been working as an electrician for typically over five years but haven’t been able to complete an apprenticeship or achieve an equivalent Level 3 vocational qualification.

Available from City & Guilds and EAL training centres, the new EWA is based on the same content as the current electrotechnical apprenticeship, so both new entrants and existing workers are assessed and accredited to the same industry standard.

Before embarking on the EWA, candidates have to complete a detailed self-assessment ‘Skills Scan’ to help them consider if the route is right for them, before working with a training provider to complete the Experienced Worker qualification via a combination of assessments and portfolio building.

To complete the whole assessment process, learners will have to gain the updated Experienced Worker Qualification, which comprises six practical performance units, plus units for BS 7671:2018 and Initial Verification. A key benefit of the EWA is that an electrician’s existing qualifications, skills and experience can count towards the Experienced Worker qualification criteria, so they will only need to provide evidence against any gaps.

Once the qualification is gained, learners must undertake the AM2E assessment, which mirrors the AM2S End Point Assessment taken by apprentices at the end of their training.

The Experienced Worker Assessment has been developed via an industry group comprising The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP), ECA, JIB, NET and Unite, Certsure, ECS, NAPIT, City and Guilds and EAL. Experienced Worker Assessment, the-esp.org.uk/ewa

The cost of both FFP3 and FFP2 face masks has also risen dramatically during the crisis. Over nine in 10 respondents said prices had increased, with nearly half of businesses reporting that face masks had at least doubled in price (49% for FFP3, 46% for FFP2).

ECA Director of CSR, Paul Reeve, comments, “The inflated cost of RPE is clearly a problem but it’s overshadowed by the difficulties being encountered across our sector, to businesses who want to provide protection, but also reassurance, to their employees regarding coronavirus, as well as the other more established respiratory hazards.”

Overall, four in 10 businesses (41%) said current access to face fit testing was a ‘practical concern’, though a similar number (also 41%) indicated it was not an issue.

The survey, which was completed by 230 engineering services businesses, was held during June 2020.

NHIC PAYS TRIBUTE TO ITS PRESIDENT Baroness Maddock, who died on June 26, was a strong advocate for social equality and energy-efficient homes and had been President of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) since January 2015.

She originally stood as Vice President for the Council since the mid-1990s, working alongside then-President Lord Ezra of Horsham and during her time continued to champion initiatives to reduce fuel poverty and improve the nation’s homes.

In her final communication with the Council, Diana expressed her enjoyment at the time she spent with members

over the years and commended the brilliant way the Council serves its members and the wider home improvement industry.

Chief Executive, Anna Scothern, says, “We were greatly saddened to hear that Diana has lost her hard-fought battle and I have been overwhelmed by the response from members, as they have reflected on their memories of Diana and the excellent works she did for the sector.

“An impressive lady who certainly left her mark in so many ways, Diana was a real champion for the NHIC and will be greatly missed.

INDUSTRY NEWS HPA REACTS TO CHANCELLOR’S SUMMER STATEMENT The Heat Pump Association (HPA) has welcomed Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Summer Statement, which looks set to build on promises that the UK will continue to invest in green technology in an effort to reduce greenhouse emissions in social housing and the public sector. However, the HPA believes the UK is still at risk of falling short if some crucial details are not clarified.

On July 8, the Chancellor delivered his Summer Statement setting out a package of measures to support the economy as the UK seeks to recover from the impact of COVID-19. Mr Sunak emphasised the importance of improving the energy efficiency of homes and reaching netzero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

A £2 billion Green Homes Grant will be introduced to help homeowners and landlords make their homes more efficient. Vouchers offered will cover at least two-thirds of the cost, up to £5,000 per household. For the worst off, the scheme will cover the full cost of energy efficiency measures up to £10,000 per household.

This year has posed a new and unknown issue, not only for Fegime but for the industry. When the Government announced the lockdown on March 23, many of the construction sites Fegime members supplied came to a swift halt. This would prove challenging for many businesses in all sectors.

SCREWFIX IN COVID-19 CHARITY DRIVE Thanks to Screwfix customers and colleagues, The Screwfix Foundation has awarded over £1m in grants to charities and not for profit organisations across the UK during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Screwfix Foundation has awarded more than 200 local charities and not for profit organisations including Papworth Trust, Save the Family and Don’t Lose Hope with grants of up to £5,000. These donations will enable charities across the UK to fix, repair, maintain and improve their facilities at a time when many have been unable to carry out their own fundraising activities.

The Screwfix Foundation also awarded additional funding to support two charities with large projects: Helen & Douglas House, a charity that provides hospice care for babies and children; and Rising Sun Domestic Violence & Abuse, which provides services for adults, children and families. CONSISTENT DATA TERMINATIONS FOR SMART BUILDINGS Brett Smyth, General Manager of IDEAL Industries EMEA, a global leader in electrical accessories, tools and equipment, discusses the need for consistent and compliant data network terminations in smart buildings, and how they can be achieved.

I

ntroducing smart technology tailored to meet a building’s occupancy patterns and the tenant’s commercial requirements is a proven strategy for reducing energy consumption and avoiding energy waste. We have come a long way since the days of basic timers and PIR sensor lighting control systems, with smart building networks that are both flexible and programmable to ensure they can be adapted to changing needs.

With increasingly sophisticated smart building systems comes a requirement for increasingly complex data networks, and installing those networks requires a large number of terminations.

Each termination requires attention to detail to ensure a robust and compliant connection. In a multi-storey office block, any smart building installation or retrofit project is likely to involve multiple operatives carrying out the terminations and consistency can be compromised by individuals working with varying standards of quality. Time pressures can also jeopardise quality and consistency, with tight programmes causing terminations to be rushed, reducing consistency as a consequence.

When consistency and compliance are compromised, identifying the terminations on the system that need to be rectified can be an onerous and time-consuming task. The answer, therefore, is to ensure terminations are carried out in a way that guarantees best practice and consistency, regardless of the number of operatives and time pressures on site.

Data networks require field-termination of CAT5e, CAT6 of CAT6A cables using RJ45 modular plugs. The more complex the network, the greater the number of RJ45 assemblies and terminations required.

Conventional installation methods require conductors to be trimmed to an exact length before the plug is placed onto the cable. If the conductors are too short, circuits will remain open, but this will not be evident until the system is tested. Finding the issues on the network at this point can be a needle-in-ahaystack exercise.

If the conductors are too long, meanwhile, there is a risk that the pairs could be left exposed outside of the plug body or cable jacket. This not only looks sloppy, but could also hinder performance on the network. In this scenario, the conductors can also move out of place; an issue that is likely to remain unnoticed until the cables are tested.

To overcome both of these potential data network termination issues, contractors need to adopt a technique that will offer complete consistency for every termination, regardless of the number of installation operatives involved, without increasing the time needed to complete the work. It was these requirements that led to the development of IDEAL Industries’ FT-45 Feed-Thru modular plugs and crimp tool.

Speed, simplicity and consistency Designed to completely re-think the traditional RJ45 assembly and crimping process, IDEAL Industries’ FT-45 solution allows installers of smart networks to speed up and simplify the termination of RJ45 plugs by eliminating the need to trim conductors to a precise length before inserting the cable into the plug.

The Feed-Thru Modular Plugs are single-piece connectors, so there is no need for installers to assemble a three-piece connector, even when working with CAT6 cable. This makes terminations faster, simpler and more consistent, whether using CAT5e, CAT6 or CAT6A cables. Conductor wires do not need to be accurately trimmed to a specific length; instead, installers

simply need to remove an appropriate section of jacket, remove the centre spline (if present), untwist the pairs into the right order, and trim the ends flat. The cable can then be slid into the connector until seated.

The unit has been designed with open ends that allow conductors to be completely fed through the connector before crimping. The cable can be pushed into the connector to ensure the twisted pairs are as close to the pin contacts as possible, and that the jacket is seated beyond the primary strain relief for a secure connection. Thanks to the clear connector design, the installer can then visually inspect and verify the correct wiring order, ensuring greater accuracy and fewer errors during the installation process.

Once the wires have been fed through, the installer can pull the cable into the plug, allowing the twists to be pulled to the front of the connector. This provides better radio-frequency performance and minimal untwisting.

The versatile FT-45 Crimp Tool designed to be used with the IDEAL Industries Ft-45 Modular Plugs further enhances the rightfirst-time consistency of this approach. With a single crimp cavity for RJ-45/8-position connectors, it is capable of crimping IDEAL Feed-Thru standard, shielded, and unshielded connectors for CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6A cables. The installer simply squeezes the handle to the closed position to cleanly shear the excess conductor wires and leave a smooth, flat finish – crimping and cutting the cable in a single action.

Progressive approach To make it easier for installers to switch from conventional RJ45 connections to the improved consistency and simplicity of the FT-45 system, IDEAL Industries has introduced two new FT-45 kits.

The kits include the FT-45 modular crimp tool, the IDEAL PrepPro cable stripper and the IDEAL Data T-cutter, along with a choice of either 50 unshielded connectors or 25 unshielded and 25 shielded connectors. CONTRACT NEWS J S WRIGHT NETS CONTRACT FOR WIMBLEDON DEVELOPMENT Mechanical and electrical services specialist, J S Wright, has netted a contract worth more than £5 million for the residential element of a major mixed-use regeneration scheme in Wimbledon.

The company will install the mechanical services for 413 high-quality private apartments at Wimbledon Grounds on the site of a former dog track in Plough Lane.

Wimbledon Grounds, which will sit next to a new stadium for football club AFC Wimbledon, is a development by Galliard Homes that will eventually comprise more than 600 homes and 18,000 sq ft of commercial space.

J S Wright is already working on a contract with Galliard Homes to install the engineering infrastructure systems, including an energy centre, boosted cold water plantroom, plantroom ventilation and a building management system, within Stadia Three, the first residential element of Wimbledon Grounds.

The company will now provide and install a low-pressure hot water heating system and pipework to deliver low-temperature hot water via heat interface units to radiators in all the apartments across the seven-storey buildings.

It will also supply and equip the apartments with energy efficient mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems that will use the outgoing air from the properties to heat incoming fresh air.

Fire prevention sprinklers, sanitary ware and HPDE above ground drainage will also be fitted.

CCTV SYSTEM GIVES SNOOKER PLAYER A BIG BREAK

CABLE MANAGEMENT FOR CAMBRIDGE FINANCE OFFICES

As a professional snooker player, Mark Joyce expects the best from every appearance he puts in at the snooker table. Having recently created his own personal, purpose-designed training facility, he decided the best way to improve his performance was to constantly record and play back his training sessions using a high specification CCTV system.

Having got in touch with leading security products supplier, ESP, he was directed to its system designer, Matt Tighe, who helped him come up with the best system design and installation to meet his needs.

Working from photographs, required dimensions and specific requirements that Mark had provided, Matt created a number of 3D drawings of how the system would look and how it would operate to capture the details that Mark required.

Products from ESP’s Rekor IP CCTV range were chosen to provide Mark with the optimum solution. A total of four cameras were installed, with one acting as a security measure to cover the facility as a whole, and the other three positioned at various locations within the room so that all angles of the snooker table are covered.

The IP CCTV kit utilised consists of a 1TB hard drive, with capacity to provide a continuous recording time of seven days; four 20m pre-made leads for wiring the cameras; two 2MP 3.6mm IP rated dome cameras; and two 5MP 2.8mm wide angle view mini dome cameras.

Set-up required the connection of the NVR to Mark’s flat screen TV using a HDMI cable, to allow for HD 1080p viewing of the cameras. Mark also has the opportunity for remote viewing via an internet connection between the NVR and modem.

In 2019, the finance offices on the Cambridge University Press site began to plan a refurbishment to enhance its IT and meeting facilities. To assist with the cable management part of the works, Marshall-Tufflex supplied a range of products to serve this large, high-end office.

Michael Penfold, Director of M Penfold Electrical Contractors, had worked with MarshallTufflex products previously and knew the products and services to be reliable, robust and ideal for such a high-profile job.

He explains, “We were working to quite a tight schedule for this one, with plans that the entire office was going to be stripped bare, including all the flooring and walls. From then, we had a 12-week schedule in place to install fuse boards, powertrack, power and data modules and trunking, in order to supply power and data to a large number of desktop computers.

“This installation was going to take place across five offices, including one with video conference facilities. The main office consists of 105 desks, which all required underfloor to desk solutions.”

For this project, Michael worked closely with Glenn Woods, Area Sales Manager at MarshallTufflex, to ensure this extensive refurbishment could be carried out to schedule.

To supply each desk with a power source for desktop computers, Marshall-Tufflex supplied a number of its Clean Earth (CE) 63amp Powertrack lengths. Supplied complete with pre-assembled coupler, end cap and floor mounting brackets, it was the perfect solution to install underfloor power within the allotted time.

These were then connected to power modules, which were secured underneath desks by a simple to install wire basket solution, to keep floors clear of cable in the busy office.

Finally, for perimeter trunking, PVC-U Sterling Profile 3 was specified.

STONEWATER AND KENSA PILOT SMART CITY SCHEME A local energy system demonstrator project aiming to evidence how ground source heat pumps with smart heating controls can reduce heating costs for residents, whilst also lowering carbon emissions, is officially underway in Oxford.

Leading housing provider, Stonewater, has partnered with Kensa Contracting to have 60 of its homes at Blackbird Leys installed with Kensa’s innovative low carbon heating solution.

Individual Kensa Shoebox ground source heat pumps in each property, connected to a communal ground array, will integrate with smart controls and time-of-use tariffs to optimise heat production for cost and carbon savings.

The heat pump installations form part of Energy Superhub Oxford (ESO), a world-first project showcasing an integrated approach to decarbonising power, heat and transport across Oxford. Supported by Innovate UK, ESO is led by consortium partners Oxford City Council, Pivot Power, Habitat Energy, Kensa Contracting, Invinity Energy Systems and the University of Oxford.

The renewable heating scheme with Stonewater is the first phase of Kensa Contracting’s aim to pilot the smart technology in 300 homes around Oxford over the next two years under the ESO project.

ESO aims to demonstrate how ground source heat pumps with smart controls can help balance the electricity grid as part of an integrated local energy solution that also includes grid connected batteries and smart electric vehicle charging.

Dr Matthew Trewhella, Managing Director of Kensa Contracting, says, “Kensa is delighted to partner with Stonewater for the first phase in this 300-property pilot ground source heat pump project.

“The residents will benefit from clean, renewable heat with savings of up to 25% compared to a standard ground source heating system. Smart meters enable residents to switch to Octopus’s unique Agile Tariff, which varies the electricity price every half an hour and optimises energy use when renewable power is prevalent on the grid, and, together with Switchee internet connected smart heating controls, will automatically run resident’s heating systems at the lowest cost times to reduce their bills while maintaining their comfort levels, and caring for the environment.”

Despite delays to commence as a result of coronavirus, Kensa expects to complete the installations across the Stonewater homes before winter 2020.

MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING FROM BELLWAY HOMES Bellway Homes is helping to break the stigma of mental health problems during these unsettling times by providing support and specialist training to its staff.

The Yorkshire division of the national homebuilder introduced a virtual half-day mental health course in March. Open to all staff members in the region, it was run four times during full lockdown, with attendees coming from the company’s four operating departments – construction, sales, technical and administration.

The course has also been attended by several directors, highlighting the company’s appetite for supporting mental health at every level.

The half day lockdown course was born out of a two-day course, which Bellway developed alongside industry charity, The Lighthouse Charity, in 2019. The longer version of the course has been attended by over 100 Bellway employees across the UK since its launch last spring.

F

or most electrotechnical professionals, the world of work will have changed considerably over the last few months.

This article will offer a glimpse of what the future might hold, including possibly the biggest change to the electrical engineering industry in decades: prosumer installations.

More than lights and sockets Coronavirus aside, the industry has been, and will continue to be, in flux for some time. There are several reasons for this: the global climate crisis, Net Zero 2050 targets written into law and new energy efficiency legislation – not to mention rapid advances in technology.

‘Simple’ installations are not so simple anymore. Where once a typical house would have mostly been composed of lights and sockets, now it may include many or all of the following: combined heat and power, ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, energy-efficient building fabric, biomass boilers, smart metering, solar PV or solar thermal panels, electric vehicle charge points – the list goes on.

There is a common thread here – one that plays to our industry’s advantage. Most of the installation, operation and maintenance tasks pertaining to the aforementioned technology lies in the hands of electrical contractors.

With the right skills and training, future commercial opportunities abound.

Who, or what, is a prosumer?

The terms ‘prosumer’ and ‘prosumer electrical installations’ (PEI) were introduced in October 2018, in the new International IEC Standard – 60364-8-2.

The core aim of the new Standard is to enhance the user experience and to push forward the decentralisation of electricity generation.

As some of you read this article, you are most likely using electricity – you are a consumer. Some of you might have a solar panel or turbine installed, which at times may feed energy back into the grid if your household’s demand is lower than the energy being generated. In this case, you are a producer and a consumer – a prosumer.

The key to making a prosumer’s complex and changeable supply/demand system work is the smart meter. While a poorly implemented initial rollout process might have dented its reputation, smart meter technology is essential and here to stay. More power to you In what can be called an ‘entry level’ smart home, there will typically be a smart meter, a consumer access device (CAD) and an inhome display (IHD), along with a means of energy generation, like a solar panel.

More advanced smart connected homes are markedly more complex buildings and will feature higher-end, more expensive installations. These may involve Internet of Things (IoT) networks, artificial intelligence and data management for smart appliances.

These homes are also more likely to have electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs) – EVs will play an increasingly important role in the prosumer economy as the market grows.

The success of these smart homes and the capacity for the grid to accommodate more of them, depends largely on electrification, which again is in the hands of electrical contractors.

V2G – the golden egg?

The most commonly found prosumer – forming the largest proportion of the prosumer market – will likely be found somewhere between the two scenarios described above.

These prosumers will rely on battery storage to control their input to the grid, and most of these batteries will be in their EVs. In other words, while large home batteries like those made by Tesla, LG, Sonnen and others may be out of reach for the average prosumer, an EV won’t be, and demand for V2G unit installations could soon skyrocket.

This is why V2G – vehicle to grid – technology will have a critical role to play in the next few years. It will help to ‘smooth the curve’ of demand over the course of a day, flattening the peaks of demand typically seen in the morning and evening. This will reduce pressure on the grid at peak times and help manage power more efficiently.

Then, there are three different modes…

How to get involved with PEI The first port of call for businesses looking to develop and grow into the prosumer space will be to ensure they become familiar with the technology on offer and any potential standards out there. This can be done by undertaking self-development training. Manufacturer training for specific technologies is also useful in the sphere.

Early adopters of PEI and associated technologies such as EVCPs, renewable energy and energy storage systems, will reap the benefits in this as yet understaffed, under-skilled but rapidly growing part of the electrotechnical industry.

The changes come in response to the opportunities and challenges being presented by digitalisation and automation in the era of Industry 4.0.

“We understand the principles behind digitalised industry and we have developed a new generation of compact and small enclosures in response. In conjunction with the introduction of our Blue e+ range and the VX25 large enclosure system, this means all our core products have been entirely redesigned, and are fit for Industry 4.0,” explains Uwe Scharf, Managing Director at Rittal with responsibility for the IT and Industry Business Units and Marketing.

The digital age is increasingly making its presence felt in switchgear workshops with a growing need for automation, greater flexibility and product availability.

Digital chain ‘from customer to customer’ Rittal provides effective support for the entire value chain surrounding the production of panels and switchgear – from engineering to ordering to automation.

Its digital product twin delivers high-quality data for the entire design, configuration and manufacturing process.

QR codes allow all parts to be precisely identified and assigned. The launch of the AX and KX brings compact and small enclosures in line with this approach.

For example, the Rittal Configuration System (RiCS) provides customers with a fast and simple system for configuring enclosures, accessories and modifications and an automatic plausibility check helps prevent erroneous choices. The results can be transferred directly to Rittal’s online shop, and this then gives the customer immediate access to both price and delivery date.

The data can also be uploaded to EPLAN software engineering software and used for downstream tasks, complete with any modifications. This substantially cuts the time and effort needed for the engineering process.

FEATURE

Simple, fast, flexible and safe The two latest additions to the Rittal enclosure portfolio contain improved features, along with new opportunities for value creation.

The time-savings start at the point of delivery to the customer: panels can be removed individually because there is no need for the usual disassembly work. Doors and cam locks are easier to install, typically without the need for tools. The wall mounting bracket can be quickly screwed into place from the outside of the enclosure, without impacting the enclosure’s protection rating. This substantially reduces the risk of damage during transit as the brackets, which protrude beyond the sides of the enclosure, can be attached on-site at the final destination.

The rising number of sensors and actuators being deployed in the switchgear industry is, in turn, raising the quantity of cables to be housed. The new enclosure’s modular design – along with improved cut-outs and larger gland plates – creates (on average) a third more space for cables.

In addition, integrated locators in the side panels enables the simple, precise and time-saving incorporation of interior installation rails.

As the rails have a 25mm spacing (pitch pattern), the AX and KX can use accessories from the VX25 portfolio, such as lights or terminal blocks. This keeps the inventory of the smaller parts to a minimum, and there is no need for machining, such drilling, etc.

Safety is a high priority for all Rittal enclosures. Installing components into the AX and KX leaves their protection category unaltered and the same is also true of their UL certification, which is essential for deployment on the North American market.

Overall, the new design features make the compact enclosures more robust and ensure greater resistance in particular to dynamic loads.

Suitable for many requirements The new product lines provide answers to many varied needs.

KX small enclosures (from 150mm x 150mm x 80mm) are ideal if only a few components are to be housed in terminal boxes and bus enclosures.

AX compact enclosures are between 120mm and 400mm deep, with a maximum size of 1,000mm x 1,400mm.

For all models, there is a choice of spray-finished sheet steel or stainless steel. Despite the greater number of potential use cases, the total number of components and accessories, and as a result complexity, has been markedly reduced.

UNDERSTANDING THE ELECTRICAL SAFETY STANDARDS NAPIT, one of the leading Government approved and UKAS accredited membership scheme operators in the building services and fabric sector, looks at the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector.

F

rom June 1, under The Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, landlords in England are required to have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested, at least every five years, by a person who is qualified and competent.

This applies to new specified tenancies from July 1, 2020 and to all other tenancies from April 1, 2021. A new specified tenancy is a tenancy which was ‘granted’ (signed) on or after June 1, 2020, when the Regulations came into force.

If a tenancy agreement was signed after June 1, 2020, the landlord must have a satisfactory electrical safety report in place before July 1, 2020.

The Regulations refer to an electrical safety report being obtained by the person conducting the electrical installation inspection and test. Typically, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is used within the industry for this purpose. An EICR is a report carried out to assess the safety of the existing electrical installation within a property and is used to describe its condition. Its purpose is to confirm as far as possible whether or not the electrical installation is in a safe condition for continued service. The EICR will show whether the electrical installation is in a satisfactory or unsatisfactory condition and will detail a list of observations affecting the safety or requiring improvements. If the EICR is unsatisfactory, the landlord has a responsibility to carry out any remedial or further investigative work within 28 days of the unsatisfactory report being issued, or any shorter period if specified as necessary in the report, and provide evidence to both the tenant and local housing authority that any rectification work has been completed and the electrical installation is now in a satisfactory condition.

The Regulations require landlords to have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested by a person who is qualified and competent.

To determine those who are qualified and competent to undertake the electrical inspection, landlords can either:

•C heck if the inspector is a member of a

competent person scheme for inspection and testing (you can do this at www. electricalcompetentperson.co.uk); or

•R equire the inspector to sign

a checklist certifying their competence, including their experience, whether they have adequate insurance and hold a qualification covering the current version of the Wiring Regulations and the periodic inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, these Regulations came in as planned on June 1, and guidance has been issued for landlords by the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) on how to deal with their legal obligations during this uncertain time.

The guidance confirms that the safety of privately rented homes is of upmost importance and landlords should make every effort to comply with the Regulations which apply to them. NAPIT has created detailed guidance on the regulations and the obligations for both electrical inspectors and landlords. These can be downloaded for free at www.napit.org.uk.

Although the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector Regulations 2020 just apply in England, mandatory electrical safety checks in the private rented sector have been required in Scotland from December 1, 2015, under the Housing (Scotland) Act 2006. In Wales, landlords’ responsibilities are covered under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985. The Housing (Wales) Act 2014 requires landlords or their letting agents to be registered with RentSmart Wales by November 2016.

The new regulations came into force on June 1st and apply to new tenancies from July 1st this year and existing tenancies from April 1, 2021. Under the new law, private sector landlords must ensure the electrical installations within their properties are safe and inspected by a qualified person at least every five years.

The person conducting the inspection must produce a report detailing anything that is unsafe, which must be rectified as well as possible areas of improvement. A copy of this report is then supplied to new and existing tenants, as well as to the Local Authority upon request.

Which properties are covered?

The regulations apply to all private rented properties in England, including all houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), where at least three people who are not from one ‘household’ live in a property with shared facilities such as a bathroom or kitchen.

This replaces previous HMO regulations regarding electrical safety.

For properties that have an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), such as newbuilds or those that have been completely rewired, there is no need for a separate inspection and report for five years from its issue. As such, a copy of the EIC should be supplied to tenants and the local authority, in line with the regulations. Once the EIC

is more than five years old, the electrical installation will require testing and inspection every five years, as with all other properties.

However, the new regulations do not apply to social housing, long leases of seven years or more, student halls of residence, hostels and refuges or accommodation relating to healthcare provision, such as care homes. The rules also do not apply where the tenant is living with the landlord, such as where rooms are rented to lodgers.

What standard must the property meet?

The electrical installation should be inspected and tested in line with the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations. While an installation that was completed in accordance with an earlier version may not comply with every requirement of the 18th Edition, it does not necessarily require remedial work to bring it up to date. Providing the installation is still ‘safe for continued use’, landlords do not have to make any changes, although it is best practice to do so. Areas of non-compliance with the current Wiring Regulations should be noted in the report as recommendations for improvement.

All ‘fixed’ electrical parts of the property must be inspected and tested. This includes the wiring, the socket-outlets, light fittings, consumer unit and any permanently connected electrical equipment such as showers and extractor fans. It does not cover other electrical appliances supplied as part of the tenancy, such as cookers, fridges and televisions, or any items owned by the tenant.

However, the Government recommends that landlords undertake PAT tests on equipment that they supply, to ensure its safety.

Who can carry out the inspection?

The regulations require the inspection, testing and reporting to be completed by a ‘qualified and competent person’. Essentially, this means any fully qualified electrician, but it is the responsibility of the landlord to ensure the person selected is qualified.

The Government recommends two routes to making this determination. One, selecting someone who is a member of a competent person scheme, such as NAPIT or NICEIC. Alternatively, for electricians that are not part of a competent person scheme, landlords can have the chosen inspector sign a checklist to verify their own competence. This includes confirmation of experience, insurance and whether they have a qualification on the 18th Edition.

While it is not necessary to be part of a competent person scheme to carry out inspections, many landlords will look for this to assure them the person selected has met strict qualification requirements and undergone regular assessments of their work. Therefore, registration with one of these schemes will make securing work easier and should be displayed prominently on literature and the company website.

What should the report contain?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) should be provided, detailing the findings of the inspection, including any remedial or further investigative work that’s necessary. Part 4 of the Electrical Safety Regulations 2020 provides further details of what is required.

For any areas of the installation that are unsafe or do not meet the standards set out in the current Wiring Regulations, the person inspecting the property will classify it with the following codes:

• Code 3 (C3): Improvement recommended. Further remedial work is not required for the report to be deemed satisfactory.

If any part of the installation is classified as C1 or C2 then it is deemed unsatisfactory for continued use and remedial work must be carried out. The landlord should be advised immediately that urgent action is required to remove the danger, and this must be followed up in writing, even before the report is issued.

The regulations state that both remedial work and further investigation must be completed within 28 days, or sooner if indicated in the report. In fact, where serious C1 faults are found, the inspector may make these hazards safe before leaving the property. Once the work has been completed, the landlord must also supply the tenant and local authority with written confirmation from the electrician.

If any area is coded C3, the landlord does not need to make any changes, but the electrician should explain that it is recommended as it does not meet the current Wiring Regulation standard.

Once the installation is declared safe for continued use, landlords must supply a copy of this report to the tenant within 28 days of the inspection and to a new tenant before they move in.

What does this mean for electrical contractors?

Qualified electricians should ensure they fully understand the new regulations and look at how this is likely to affect current customers and the local area. For the majority of conscientious landlords, the change in regulations will have little impact and obtaining the EICR will be simple.

Others may require additional services to bring their properties up to the required standard. As a result, electrical contractors available to conduct inspections, investigations and remedial work could open up a significant and reoccurring new area of business.

Teaming with the EIC Aico has joined forces with the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) to help educate and increase understanding of mental health awareness with virtual, online training.

As part of its ongoing commitment and support to the EIC, Aico is organising mental health awareness sessions online via webinar. These easily accessible sessions will be delivered alongside the award-winning Expert Installer Training scheme and provide interactive and informative training.

These sessions will be run by a qualified EIC trainer and aim to provide an understanding of what mental health is, knowledge on some common mental health issues and encourage challenging of the stigmas associated with mental health.

This initiative will help educate in ways to look after your own mental health and to support someone who may be in distress.

The mental health awareness sessions began in West Lothian College with the webinars being delivered to apprentices and electrical engineering students following their Expert Installer training.

The webinars were limited to six students to allow for better interaction and engagement with the EIC provider and had a positive response from the students.

College Principle, Jackie Galbraith, says, “These sessions provided an excellent resource for students to ask questions and talk to their peers”. The free of charge mental health awareness sessions offered

by Aico and the EIC will be rolled out nationwide to those within the electrical industry in the coming months.

Easily accessible webinars With the unprecedented times caused by the pandemic, Aico revamped its training scheme to be delivered online as a free, easily accessible webinar. Launched in April, professionals can remain up to date with legislation, products and technologies while keeping informed on the selection, siting and installation of Aico alarms.

The webinars are continuing, covering Expert Installer, standards and regulations, RadioLINK and RadioLINK+, with panel discussions being added to include the Hackitt Review and Building a Better Future.

In a survey of those who had attended an Aico webinar, over 99% of people asked said they found the webinars useful, with the majority commenting that they were informative and relevant. One user commented that the webinar provided “Excellent and informative material from a proactive company that underpins its installers’ knowledge and skills,” while another said the webinar gave “Very clear explanation and example install, perfect delivery for an online audience”.

Aico has also evolved its technical support and guidance to fit the ever-changing climate. With support and guidance already available via live chat, email and telephone calls, Aico is going the extra mile for its customers. Customers with technical queries can now contact Aico’s friendly and knowledgeable technical team via video call on Microsoft Teams or Zoom. By adapting to new ways of working and using platforms to facilitate video conferencing, the Aico technical team will now be able to give more hands-on, practical advice.

Conventional systems

ire alarm systems are broadly divided into two main groupings – ‘conventional’ fire alarm systems and analogue addressable ‘intelligent’ systems – with each type best suited to different kinds of premises.

Conventional, or four-wire, fire alarm systems have been traditionally used in smaller properties such as shops and restaurants. They work by dividing the building into a number of detection zones, with the detectors and call points within each zone hardwired on dedicated two-core cable to the control panel.

There may be multiple detectors on a single zone.

A separate two-core, fire-protected cable for the alarm’s sounders is required as they are wired on different circuits. If a detector is activated, the control panel identifies the circuit that contains the triggered device and so indicates the zone from which the fire alarm has originated

In large buildings, this could mean that over 50 zones would be needed to correctly protect the property to the prevailing industry standards, proving a costly and time-consuming exercise.

Because the majority of conventional detectors are simple, two state devices, they can only be in either a normal or fire condition. Although modern components and quality system design can play a part in reducing potential problems, it is not uncommon for conventional systems to generate unwanted alarms.

Intelligent systems Addressable or ‘intelligent’ fire alarm systems overcome these limitations and are designed for large commercial premises and more complex networked systems. They are more expensive and more complicated than conventional fourwire systems, having increased flexibility, intelligence, speed of identification, and scope of control.

In addressable systems, different types of initiating devices are wired in one or more single loops around the premises, requiring less cabling than conventional systems, with each detector or call point having its own unique address. The fire control panel receives information and status reports from each device and indicates its exact location if there is a fault, contamination or activation via smoke or heat detection. As these control panels have become more sophisticated and more powerful, they are capable of handling an increasing number of loops per panel and it is possible to network numerous panels together to increase the capacity.

Because analogue addressable fire alarm systems offer a greater degree of flexibility, intelligence, speed of identification and extent of control, they are the preferred option for specifiers and contractors working on bigger and more intricate projects as they overcome the limitations of conventional fire alarm systems.

allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material cost.

A key benefit that is offered with some of these types of systems is an alarm confirmation feature which offers the ability to select a confirmation period for individual detectors and therefore confirm if the smoke/heat detected is an actual fire – and not a false alarm. Using these built-in alarm confirmation features, until an alarm has been confirmed within an individual area, only that area is evacuated. At the same time, if an alarm is confirmed in a common area, the device initiates a full alarm evacuating all surrounding areas. This unique conventional panel feature is vital where two-stage alarms are required.

Another major plus with some systems on the market is a special flexi-detector which adds further versatility and convenience to this type of alarm system. Offering different modes of fire detection including combined heat and smoke, these detectors are also available with an inbuilt sounder or inbuilt sounder strobe, which will assist with a compact install solution (as the detector and sounder is all-in-one, as opposed to separate units). Due to the different options, the flexidetector offers convenience to installers, as they will not be required to carry a complete range of devices.

lectrical fires can be fatal, often sparking without warning during any time of the day. They endanger life, property and the health of the business itself. After the immediate threat to life has disappeared, it is the impact of the business disruption caused that proves most lethal to companies. The impact of the disruption that follows – costing over $2 million (£1.58m) in insurance claims on average – often outweighs the cost of initial property damage caused.

A fire response plan is critical to ensuring your employees make it out of the building safely. However, for the business to survive in the long term, you need to be aiming for more than just fire response.

Prevention is by far the best cure, ensuring any danger to staff, property and operations is greatly minimised. To achieve proactive prevention, however, you need data and the ability to turn it into real-time insight.

The Internet of Things (IoT), coupled with a smart, dynamic systems architecture that enables continuous detection and data exploitation, allows organisations to put out fires before they can even begin.

The lesson here is that business leaders can’t simply focus on one area of the circuit while neglecting the others.

Circuits age unevenly and unpredictably, so comprehensive, persistent monitoring and predictive maintenance are key to limiting fire risk. Fires often break out without warning and become a dangerous crisis in minutes. Therefore, for enhanced safety it is important that checks go beyond regular one-off checks. Only continual monitoring and detection will ensure you are ready for any eventuality.

DEFINING THE REQUIREMENTS OF UNIQUE DISTRIBUTION UNITS Andrew Whyatt, Electrical Engineering Manager with CEENorm UK, considers the characteristics that need defining when asked to design a custom-built socket distribution system.

W

hen a standard product is not available, it can be difficult trying to find a distribution unit that is the right fit for your needs. Much of the time it is a challenge to understand all the project requirements; however, when enquiring about a custom built or made to order unit, the more detail you can offer at the start of the project, the greater the opportunity to have the correct solution designed first time, saving you time and money – which is often critical in managing project budgets. As project complexity increases, this typically requires more open discussions about design proposals and application details.

Often, especially in the early stages of a project, not all details are known but when specifying a custom distribution product, gaining an understanding of the below areas will help to confidently design the correct solution.

Styles of enclosure can include wall, surface mounted, free standing and portable options

• Project overview / application: Understanding the market sector, overall project outcomes, and environmental conditions helps to select suitable product ranges and come up with potential alternative solutions that may not have been considered.

• Style of enclosure: This could be wall / surface mount, free standing or portable.

How is the distribution unit to be positioned and supported?

• Preferred material: Steel, stainless steel, GRP, polyester, polyethylene, thermoplastic or hard rubber enclosures are all options depending on the application. Expanding on this, various grades of steel are available.

Common options include Mild, Zintec, 304 / 304L, 316 / 316L. All are available as required in a powder coat finish, most commonly RAL7035 (light grey). Always remember to ask if alternative finishes are required, as other colours are available.

Ranges of differing thermoplastic enclosures are selected depending on application and budget. Common materials are PBT, a polyester material used in our Variabox modular system that is often selected for industrial and harsh environments. ABS is a cost-effective polymer and used in several enclosure ranges. Other materials such as PS, (polystyrene) and PC (polycarbonate) are used for smaller enclosures and device viewing windows.

Portable equipment, often used in the events industry, or temporary power applications can use injection moulded enclosures such as our Evobox range, made from LLDPE, (linear low-density polyethylene). Alternatively, custom fabricated enclosures using hard sheets of HDPE could be an option.

• Preferred IP rating: Linked to the environmental conditions, what is the minimum acceptable IP rating? Socket options are usually IP44 or IP67, enclosures and other options may have an influence.

Distribution and combination units will be given an overall rating, based on the component that has the least protection against the ingress of dust and liquid. Certain enclosures have limiting IP ratings.

Standard 13A BS1363 UK domestic twin switched socket outlets, for example, are rated at IP2x.

Alternatively, we can fit a plug and cable. Our standard offer would be H07RN-F ‘rubber’ cable. Don’t forget to mention how long you want the cable to be.

• Socket count: How many are required? And consider current rating (A), voltage (V), configuration 3P+N+E (number of pins). We simply need to know the sockets you require, and/ or other circuits that may be used for future requirements or external equipment such as a lighting circuit.

To aid clarity, consider combining your socket list with the required electrical protection. For example: -Q uantity (3x) Current Rating (32A), Voltage (400V), Configuration (3P+N+E) or (five pin).

Various enclosure materials are selected depending on application and budget

Having identified a preferred enclosure style, the next step is to consider details of what is required.

• Incoming supply: Hard wired, single pole connectors, appliance inlet, plug & cable length.

How would you like to connect your supply to the supplied distribution equipment?

For fixed installations, hard wiring is preferable. Useful details to think about start with the cable approach.

Should the units be suitable for top, bottom, or side entry? What about the type and size of cable? This helps to offer adequate termination sizes and spreading distances.

Also, how is the supply electrically protected? Knowing if there are upstream fuses, MCBs, MCCBs etc. helps us to maintain discrimination between the supply devices, and our locally provided earth leakage and/or overcurrent protective devices.

For portable or temporary use equipment, a means of convenient disconnection can be useful. Portable equipment is often supplied with an appliance inlet, the client using an extension lead to connect between the supply and the distribution unit.

• Electrical protection: Where known, and if specified, advise regarding RCD sensitivity, types, MCB tripping curve types, fault ratings, and preferred manufacturers.

Clarification of required Residual Current Device (RCD) types can help the design to stay within expected budgets.

RCD Devices can include: -R CCBs – Earth leakage protection only.

Common types are AC, A, S, and B. - RCBOS – Earth leakage with integral overcurrent (combined RCCB and MCB).

-V ariable sensitivity / time delayed earth leakage relays.

Overcurrent devices, meanwhile, can include: -M CCBs – Moulded Case Circuit Breakers. Various tripping characteristics are available.

-M CBs – Miniature Circuit Breakers.

You may think that pliers have not changed all that much over the years, but innovations and new features are designed and incorporated into hand tools on a regular basis to save time and effort for electricians. Here are five of the top trends as it relates to the latest tool innovations:

1. Compact designs

There is a noticeable move to more compact designs. Tools such as the Cobra XS, which are the smallest water pump pliers in the world with full functional capability, measure just 100mm long and can adapt to eleven adjustment positions and grip nuts up to 24mm in width. They also look great and tools like these are becoming more sought after as professionals look for improved ease of use and functionality.

2. Multiple features on one tool Cable strippers are a key part of any electrician’s toolkit and are also being designed with more features, while at the same time becoming more user friendly.

The PreciStrip16, for example, quickly and precisely strips fine, flexible and solid cables, holding all materials tightly and firmly in its semi-circular grooved holding clamps. The pliers have a wide capacity range (which is easily adjusted) from 0.08 to 16 mm2. The cable cutter on top of the PreciStrip16 reliably cuts flexible cables up to 16mm and solid conductors up to 6mm.

Parabolic stripping blades separate insulation from both extremely finestranded and solid round cables, then automatically strip the insulation off backwards. It has an adjustable length stop so accuracy is guaranteed time after time, even on repetitive jobs. When needed, the blade cassette can be easily replaced. The tool makes cable stripping easy as it has an ergonomic handle that is comfortable to use all day long.

Manufacturers like Knipex are also making electricians’ lives easier by combining access keys into one tool. For instance, the Control Cabinet Key ‘Double Joint’ is designed to work across a range of utility and control cabinets, fitting locks made by different manufacturers. With a varnished plastic body and zinc die-cast profiles, it makes it easy to access control panels, shut off valves and more, and electricians do not have to root around for hours looking for keys.

3. Personalisation As well as expecting a perfect, secure grip and an exact cut every time with the PreciStrip16, it’s not easy to lose either as it comes with a description label that can be personalised – meaning no more mix-ups and no more lost tools. Being able to personalise a hand tool may be the first step into deterring tool theft too.

5. Safety and protection Making sure hand tools are fit for purpose and safe for their users is very important.

Using insulated VDE pliers, for instance, is a must, but there are other types of safety and protection features too.

Take tethered tools, for example, which allow electrical contractors to work at height, perhaps in an industrial setting, without the fear of dropping a tool onto equipment below. ith advances in design and technology, there is now a wide range of cable management systems available, particularly when it comes to perimeter trunking. However, it is important to choose the system that is most suitable for the project and this will depend on the type and use of the building. It will also be influenced by the need to meet the regulatory requirements.

Physical factors One of the first and most basic factors to consider is the number and types of cable that need to be contained. When choosing the cable management product, you must ensure that there will be sufficient space within the system to contain the required cables. If there are too many cables housed within the trunking this can lead to overheating. The guideline set out in the Wiring Regulations is that the cables should not occupy more than 45% of the space within the conduit or trunking. To calculate this, contractors should look

at the cross-sectional area of each cable (including the insulation) and compare the total area of all cables to the space within the trunking.

CABLE & CABLE MANAGEMENT Contractors should look for systems with separate compartments to allow the different types of cable to be separated, as detailed in BS EN 50174. There are many systems available that have three sections as standard and can then be subdivided further if necessary. Individual covers on each of the main sections will help ensure ease of access.

The possibility of electromagnetic interference (EMI) on data cables also needs to be considered. Steel and aluminium systems provide high quality protection against EMI but typically have a higher cost compared with PVC-U versions. Steel or aluminium dividers can also be used to separate power and data cables to reduce EMI. Where aluminium dividers are used, twice the space for cable separation is generally required than when steel is used.

Furthermore, to fulfil particular needs or overcome challenges of the installation, there are also a wide array of specially designed cable management systems.

Compact systems are available for where space is physically limited, such as below windowsills. While these do not have the capacity of the full-size systems, there are three compartment options that still allow simple separation of cables. Also, cornice trunking provides simple and unobtrusive concealment for surface wiring around ceilings, while angled bench trunking can be mounted directly on to desks, work benches or fitted under shelving.

In addition, Approved Document M of the Building Regulations requires that in non-residential buildings, face plates around electrical sockets differ in colour from their background. This is to help those with a visual impairment to locate them more easily. Coloured accessory boxes should be selected to provide a colour frame that contrasts against standard white components.

Fire safety The latest edition of the Wiring Regulations introduced the need to adequately support all cables using non-combustible fixings, to prevent premature collapse in the event of a fire. The heat of the fire can cause cable housings to fail, resulting in falling and fallen cables that present a serious hazard to those evacuating and especially to firefighters moving into and through the building. Cables should be fixed in place using metal clips or supports and secured to the structure of the building, such as the ceiling or wall. This ensures that the cables are held firmly, even if the surrounding cable management system fails.

Sustainability Reducing waste and optimising the use of resources is now a key issue. Making more sustainable product choices in all areas of the building is now a focus on many projects, not just those aiming for higher environmental accreditations.

While PVC-U cable management systems manufactured using recycled content is not a recent development, ongoing product innovation means that leading suppliers now offer systems containing more than 80% recycled plastic. In the case of some white trunking extrusions, this can be as much as 100%.

There has been a common misconception that the use of recycled PVC-U results in a lower quality product. In fact, the quality of the raw material itself is more important than if it comes from recycled sources and there are many low-quality systems manufactured from virgin PVC-U. For example, the recycled postindustrial waste PVC-U used for our cable management systems originates from window frames – a high grade of plastic that even after processing retains the same characteristics. Using recycled PVC-U products that are rigorously quality controlled will ensure the product retains the glossy white finish and colour consistency that is expected.

Anti-microbial systems Furthermore, for some environments it may be advisable to select a cable management product with enhanced hygiene properties, such as those with an anti-microbial treatment. While these are commonly chosen for healthcare settings, they also have benefits for other high-traffic and public buildings such as schools, colleges and universities as well as sports centres, leisure facilities and gyms.

Silver ion-based technology is one of the most effective forms of continual anti-microbial protection. The silver ions manufactured into the surface of the PVC-U or ABS disrupt the key cell functions of bacteria and prevent them from reproducing. The presence of silver ions in the material has been proven to reduce the bacteria surviving on the surface by 99.9%. This includes Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). When combined with a robust cleaning regime, the antimicrobial properties can protect

those using the building from the risks of bacteria spreading.

However, not all anti-microbial systems offer the same level of durability and longevity. The silver ion formulation can either be added to the PVC-U when it is manufactured, or applied to the surface postproduction. If coated trunking is scratched or damaged, which is very common over time in busy, high-traffic environments, this will leave exposed surface areas where the bacteria can survive and multiply.

Therefore, products where the silver ions are integral in the material offer a more reliable and long-lasting protection, as damage to the surface does not impair its effectiveness. At the same time, electricity is a vital part of the modern world. It powers our hospitals, our houses, our transport and even our smartphones. But how can we ensure all our electrical cables are protected from heat, chemicals or water?

EMBRACING THE ‘BEST OF BRITISH’ With COVID-19 having a huge impact on buying habits, Toolstation has observed a trend whereby customers are seeking products made in Britain. Here, we look at the implications for cable products, with key input from Doncaster Cables and BASEC.

A

recent survey of tradespeople and DIY customers by Toolstation as the UK came out of lockdown showed that 86% believe it is important to protect the future of British manufacturing. Having access to locally manufactured products makes their lives easier and creates employment for British workers.

The decades-long decline of UK manufacturing is an all-too-familiar story.

COVID-19 has challenged manufacturers of electrical, plumbing and heating products as much as it has tested other UK businesses. Employees have been furloughed, production lines have fallen silent and there have been job losses too; worrying and unavoidable consequences of ‘unprecedented times.’

Necessity is the mother of invention

The picture hasn’t been all bleak though.

Lockdown presented opportunities to demonstrate innovation, agility and fighting spirit. As global supply chains faltered and failed, some UK brands kept production open to ensure continuity of product availability and build up stocks for essential trades and vital healthcare equipment manufacturers.

News reports celebrated the reengineering of production lines and rapid product innovation to build much-needed ventilators and other equipment for the NHS. Contactum, the manufacturer of electrical accessories and circuit protection, was able to respond within 24 hours to a request for highly specialised sockets from the contractors building London’s Nightingale Hospital, producing and delivering them to site immediately.

It wasn’t only the NHS, however, that needed suppliers to think differently about how to keep the country’s construction industry working, or to provide trades with the products they needed for essential repairs and maintenance. At a time when many electrical wholesalers remained closed or didn’t have the manpower to cut cable, Toolstation collaborated with long-standing supplier Doncaster Cables to keep customers supplied. The approach was simple, but popular with customers who could now order cutlengths of cable online for delivery direct to site.

Taking back market share Once a significant industry in the UK, cable manufacturing has haemorrhaged tens of thousands of jobs. Doncaster Cables founder, Chris Mallinson, estimates that between 60% and 70% of all energy cables used in the country may now be imported from overseas, rising to as much as 90% in the case of flexible cords, where his company is now the only approved UK manufacturer.

The good news for those whose businesses have suffered from cheap imports is that interest in British products has increased because of both the pandemic and Britain’s exit from the EU. 40% of the 3,500 customers who responded to the Toolstation survey said the crisis had increased their consideration or purchase of materials made in the UK. This is similar to the 42% who reported that Brexit had increased the likelihood of them considering or buying British products.

Keeping up standards

Interest in British products has increased because of both the pandemic and Britain’s exit from the EU

Securing the supply chain Nigel Birch, Head of UK Sales and Marketing at Contactum, believes that lockdown was a wake-up call for buyers, who realised that somebody in the supply chain has to carry product stocks. “As supplies of imported product dwindled, the thought process in the UK started to change. The penny dropped that making products in the places where they are used is actually quite sensible,” says Birch. As a result, Contactum ran a successful social media campaign encouraging contractors to ‘buy British’ and saw an increase in calls from buyers wanting to consider products made locally.

Product shortages have been frustrating for buyers who needed to get on with a job, either for a customer or in their own home.

Toolstation electrical buyer, Colin Freeland is well aware of the importance of working with local manufacturers and carrying deep stocks to prevent future supply chain disruption.

“COVID has been the perfect storm,” he explains. “In local and developed markets, manufacturers had to either shut down or significantly adjust their working practices to accommodate social distancing in a challenging production environment. But you have to realise it takes 10 weeks to ship a consumer unit from the Far East. If that becomes difficult, for whatever reason, we are going to be vulnerable to product shortages,” he explains. Meanwhile, air freight is increasingly costly and less straightforward because airlines have grounded unprofitable planes. It’s also something customers want to see decreasing: 50% of people surveyed said that reducing carbon footprint was a reason for buying British.

Among survey respondents, 41% said that better product quality was a reason for buying British, while 53% quoted better testing and safety standards. Along with continuity of supply and the need to protect local economies, this is a message that UK manufacturers are keen to promote.

“British Standards have always been the gold standard,” according to Chris Mallinson, who is also a director of BASEC, an independent certification body for the cable industry worldwide. “Tradespeople need to know that some imported products pose an actual risk to life because they are made from inferior compounds and are manufactured outside British Standards, so they can overheat or give electric shocks. In some cases, buying British is the responsible thing to do.”

Toolstation’s Commercial Director, Matt Nourse, certainly intends to pursue this strategy, in a market where people increasingly look for recognisable, branded products. “There’s a reason why you’re seeing more ‘Made in Britain’ labelling on items in the Toolstation catalogue. Our customers know this stands for continuity of supply, high quality, proper accreditation and – above all – peace of mind.”

In the manufacturing community, they may still be having sleepless nights thanks to the immediate fallout from the looming recession. Yet, while nobody is predicting a return to the heyday of British manufacturing, there is a sense that our homegrown suppliers should be able to ride out this storm. After all, there are encouraging signs that this is what customers want.
