elcome to the December issue of ECN, and I entrust you’re well heading into the festive break.

With the fallout from the Grenfell disaster still having widespread implications across the electrical industry, the issue of fire safety has once again risen to the fore – most notably due to the recent blaze that swept through a student accommodation block in Bolton.

Fortunately, the fire was brought under control before any fatalities occurred, but it’s evident that major steps are required to ensure that scenes such as these are avoided at all costs.

University and college campuses, which house a significant number of residents, seem particularly at risk – but worryingly, new figures released by Eaton indicate that the majority of UK universities are failing to invest in new technologies that reduce the risk of electrically ignited fires.

The recently collated data reveals that more than one in four universities (28%) have received complaints from students, staff or the public in the last five years regarding fire safety or building

evacuation procedures. Despite technological innovation and the widespread availability of proven fire safety and evacuation solutions, many universities are abiding by the minimum standards required by regulation, but not yet aware of or investing in existing technology which can improve safety standards for their students and staff.

With 54% of all fires in England caused by an electrical defect, it’s imperative that universities make plans to safeguard against electrical faults that have the potential to spark fires – especially with the expectation of 24/7 uptime and the number of devices on the rise.

INDUSTRY NEWS LOVE YOUR CYLINDER CAMPAIGN As part of its Love Your Cylinder campaign, Heatrae Sadia has launched a digital advice series to help answer some common questions for installers.

A rise in multi-generational households means that cylinders are an increasingly appropriate choice for homeowners, and with research highlighting the boost that a boiler and bathroom renovation can bring to a home’s value, this trend looks set to continue. Despite this, there remain a number of recurring questions amongst installers, on topics such as how they work, when they should be installed, and the level of training required.

P4 was awarded with a certificate by BSI at LuxLive – Europe’s largest annual lighting event, which took place in London in November.

P4’s Fastel Automatic Testing and Monitoring Systems were rigorously tested by BSI to achieve the Kitemark.

Additionally, P4’s manufacturing sites and quality plans have also undergone comprehensive assessments to achieve certification.

BRITAIN FAILING WITH POWER SYSTEM FLEXIBILITY Regulatory uncertainty, lack of Energy Transition Readiness Index visibility on returns and technical challenges are impeding investment in flexibility services to support Britain’s electricity network as more renewables come online, risking delays in the transition to a greener future, an industry report says.

The Energy Transitions Readiness Index, a report published by the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) and commissioned by Eaton and Drax, reviewed regulation and market access, social and political support for the energy transition, and deployment of enabling technologies (such as smart meters) in nine northern European countries. Britain, which ranked eighth out of the nine countries in the index, scored poorly on market factors such as a clear and stable regulatory and market framework.

The Netherlands topped the league table of nine countries. Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and Norway also scored highly, while Germany, Britain and France lagged.

The report also highlighted potential difficulties accessing the distribution network and a lack of progress on delivering smart electric vehicle charging.

Flexibility is becoming increasingly important as more variable renewables, such as wind and solar, replace Britain’s large fossil-fuelled power stations to meet targets to cut carbon emissions.

Large generators typically provided flexibility by supplying power during peak demand and ensuring that the system’s voltage and frequency remained within operational limits.

Dr Nina Skorupska, Chief Executive of the REA, says, “Decarbonising power means delivering flexibility. In a world of very low-cost variable renewable electricity generation, grids need to be organised differently and some services, which were once taken for granted, need to be actively procured.

“Crucially, as renewable power prices fall around the world, every country will be experiencing the same shift. If Britain becomes a flexibility pioneer, then a whole world of markets for exporting our products and services opens up. Whilst this index shows we’re lagging behind, there’s still time to bounce back. That’s why the REA is calling for the next government to address the barriers to flexibility by delivering wholesale systems change and reform Ofgem as a priority.”

INDUSTRY NEWS SCOLMORE ON HAND FOR CHILDREN IN NEED In the lead-up to a special programme recorded for this year’s BBC Children in Need Special, wiring accessories specialist, Scolmore, was able to meet some very specific needs for this worthwhile project.

DIY SOS: The Big Build BBC Children in Need Special aired on BBC One on November 13, and featured the transformation of a rundown church hall into a much needed emergency accommodation and support centre for Nightsafe – a Blackburn charity that provides support to young people aged 16 to 24 who are homeless or vulnerably housed.

With just nine days to complete the project, resident electrician Billy Byrne (pictured centre) sought the help of Scolmore to supply all the electrical accessories needed to complete this ambitious build.

He took a trip to Scolmore’s headquarters in the Midlands, where he picked up the supplies. Switches and sockets from Scolmore’s Mode range of wiring accessories, Inceptor Omni integrated fire-rated downlights from OVIA, and cable accessories from Unicrimp were all donated for installation in the new accommodation.

The Nightsafe charity at the heart of this special project was set up in 1990 by a group of locals to meet the growing needs of homeless young people. With the original building bursting at the seams and no longer big enough to cater for the growing demand in the area, an urgent solution was required. The transformation of the building to a purposebuilt support centre and short-term accommodation will give these young people a place to call home whilst they develop independent living skills.

INDUSTRY LEADERS WIN PRESTIGIOUS FIRE AND SECURITY AWARDS

SELECT RAISES ALARM ON NEW FIRE REGULATIONS A campaign to raise public awareness of new safety regulations affecting all homes has been launched

by Select, Scotland’s leading trade body for the electrical industry.

Under the new laws, every residence throughout the country must have an interlinked warning system for smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detection by February 1, 2021. To help comply with the new regulations, Select has produced an eightpage brochure with clear step-by-step guidance on exactly what is required.

The brochure will be handed out by Select’s 1,250 members to homeowners, tenants and landlords. It identifies the types of alarms specified for use and exactly where they should – and shouldn’t – be installed around the home.

The guide, which has been developed in partnership with alarm company, Aico, also provides similar advice on carbon monoxide alarms, as well as giving an introduction to the Tolerable Standard and Repairing Standard.

Dave Forrester, Head of Technical Services at Select, says, “Although consumers and landlords don’t need to comply with the new regulations until 2021, it is vital to raise awareness about exactly what needs to be done. This new support tool is designed to give an easy-to-follow overview of the changes, helping people across Scotland understand what they have to do and why. Two outstanding individuals from the fire, emergency and security industry have been recognised by the Fire & Security Association (FSA) for changing the sector for the better at this year’s IFSEC Security and Fire Excellence Awards.

Dennis Davis of the Fire Sector Federation won the Ian Marsh Fire Award for his significant contribution to industry, including leadership roles at the Institution of Fire Engineers, UK Fire Officers and the International Fire and Rescue Services Association.

Simon Banks of CSL scooped the Peter Greenwood Security Award, having been a champion for the sector over many years, in his roles at NSI, BAFE, CSL, and most recently as Chair of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA).

ECA Technical Director, Mike Smith, comments, “Both Dennis and Simon have been fantastic champions of our industry over the years, and the FSA is delighted to recognise them for their work.”

The FSA was an official partner at the IFSEC Awards, which took place on November 20 at the Park Lane Hilton in London. The FSA consists of members of ECA, the leading electrotechnical and engineering trade association, and Scottish electrical trade body, Select – although the awards are open to the entire industry.

LATE PAYMENTS CAUSING DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE A remarkable nine out of 10 business owners across construction suffer a range of mental health issues due to payment and other business pressures, according to a survey run by leading engineering services trade bodies, ECA and BESA. The new survey, conducted in association with 25 other construction trade bodies, found that business owners have an array of significant mental health problems due to the pressures of late or unfair payment, including: stress (80%), depression (36%), extreme anger (38%), anxiety and/or panic attacks (40%), insomnia (36%), and even suicidal feelings (10%).

Unfair payment practices also have a significant impact on employees right across a business, including CEOs, directors, managers and executives. Of all the respondents, four said they had attempted suicide as a result, while 80% reported a mental health issue.

Furthermore, over four in 10 (41%) of all respondents said that payment issues had strained their relationship with their partner, with 5% reporting it caused it to breakdown entirely.

ECA Director of CSR, Paul Reeve, comments, “Everybody expects business to deal with everyday pressures, but stress and other mental health impacts come from sustained and excessive pressure. It’s absolutely clear from these findings that poor payment is a serious cause of mental health issues across the industry and that the problem, far from being isolated to certain

individuals, is commonplace among top management.

“These problems quickly knock on to employees and families alike.

Findings such as these mean that clients and other buyers need to greatly improve their approach to supply chain payment, and it’s a sad reflection on the industry that it will probably take legislation to achieve it.”

TOOL DONATION SEEKS TO BOOST APPRENTICE SAFETY Super Rod has donated 40 safety tool kits to apprentices at Edinburgh College, as part of the company’s industry-recognised campaign with health and safety ambassador Louise Taggart to improve isolation standards in the electrical industry.

The donation holds a special importance to the safety campaign, as it was the college attended by Louise’s brother, Michael Adamson – the electrician who died in a workplace incident in 2005, after coming into contact with mains voltage power.

On November 11, Louise shared Michael’s Story with the Edinburgh College course apprentices before helping Super Rod’s Managing Director, Malcolm Duncan (pictured second from left), hand out the safety tool kits – which included a set of VDE rated insulated pliers from Klein Tools, a Megger Instruments voltage tester and a lock out kit from MCG. The products chosen for the safety tool kit are of particular significance to Michael’s Story, as the findings of the HSE’s investigation into his death found that there was no lock out kit or voltage tester provided by Michael’s employer, and the way pliers were being used by electricians meant their insulation was inadequate – all factors that contributed to the tragic events that unfolded that day.

Louise comments, “While I can’t undo what happened that day for Michael, I can encourage apprentices to get into good habits and not accept anyone else compromising their safety. Thanks to Super Rod, they now have the tools in their hands for safe isolation, and my sincere hope is this will be the generation who will no longer accept insulating tape as a means of isolation.”

COVER STORY When turning on the GTC 400 C, the built-in visual camera is automatically activated. The intuitive display presents temperature differences within the camera’s field of view when scanning a room, displaying the hottest and coldest locations in the room. This enables the user to draw clear conclusions about the temperature distributions and locate their causes. The GTC 400 C’s freeze, save and gallery process allows thermal images to be explained and saved in a professional manner.

To activate this function, simply aim the GTC at the point of interest and freeze the image using the red trigger positioned on the back of the tool. This will then freeze the image to the display, allowing the user to move away and explain the findings to a customer. The image can then be saved in the tool’s image storage, which can be viewed later on in the gallery for other purposes; such as the user discussing the situation with their manager, for instance.

Despite the impressive storage, which is capable of saving up to 500 images, the GTC 400 C’s gallery can only show thermal imagery. However, real images are automatically saved and can be accessed on a computer when the device is connected via a micro USB. The use of thermal measurements alongside real life images allows the user to simplify and better explain situations to a customer.

The tool boasts a large 3.5 inch colour display enhancing user readability, whilst the 160 x 120 infrared sensor resolution provides the ability to detect temperature variances within seconds. Each of the 19,200 pixels corresponds exactly to one measuring point and provides a detailed, informative thermal image. The GTC offers auto scale and fixed scale options and thanks to the high thermal sensitivity, even the smallest temperature differences can be displayed. The user has to simply set the temperature scale to their preferred range, which will result in only the relevant temperatures within the desired range being shown. The intuitive display and simple controls are self-explanatory, making detection effortless and easy to adapt for different scenarios.

Another expert feature of the Bosch thermal camera is its interchangeable emissivity degrees, which are clearly unique to the tool. This allows the user to set the emissivity for a range of commonly encountered materials to better target and document their area of interest on the job.

The GTC 400 C has IP53 dust and splash protection, giving the user reassuring safety for all potential work scenarios. The tool can be powered by both 10.8 V/ 12 V Li-ion battery packs – from the professional range – whilst also giving the option to be powered by four AA batteries using the Bosch AA1 battery adaptor.

The dual power supply ensures the user is never interrupted on the job. Whilst having a large internal storage of up to 500 thermal measurements, there is also the option to transfer and store measurements. This can be done in two ways: by downloading the images onto a device through its Wi-Fi hotspot, or by connecting the GTC to a computer through a micro USB cable.

To import images onto a device, the user has to connect the GTC to the Bosch Measuring Master app, which is done by simply enabling the Wi-Fi hotspot on the device and importing the images onto the app. This app is free to download on any smartphone or tablet through the app store.

Once connected, all images that have been stored within the device can be quickly transferred onto the user’s smartphone or tablet. The imported images can then be edited on the Measuring Master app for a more informative and professional analysis in order to best inform clients.

Emissivity of individual images can be adjusted and edited from thermal to real images, in order to provide clear understanding to clients. The second method of transferring images is via micro USB to a laptop or computer: simply connect the GTC 400 C using the cable provided. This will automatically pop up with a new drive on the desktop which contains all thermal and real images on the device, allowing the user to view and compare the thermal and real differences for clarity.

The GTC Transfer Software is available for desktop users to download online, and the software acts as an alternative for desktop users to the Measuring Master app. However, it allows the user to edit and analyse measurements in greater depth than the Measuring Master app, and the user can then provide a more professional and in-depth service to their clients.

Corresponding data from the thermal image is available to view in the temperature graph window, where emissivity and transparency can also be adjusted.

Using the software, the user can alter the thermal image and remove the information that is deemed irrelevant. This increases efficiency, as only the relevant information is included to better suit the customer’s needs.

The GTC Transfer Software produces consistently high quality reports in a professional format that is structured clearly, so the user can easily analyse temperature issues. Different tools adjust the visualisation to ensure the highest quality of image is obtained, while highlighting functions can be used to draw the attention to areas of interest. Once reports are completed, they can be exported as a PDF or Word document to be transferred on to customers to provide a professional experience.

CONTRACT NEWS ROBE LIGHTING CHOSEN FOR NEW EVENT SPACE Nearly 100 Robe LED lighting fixtures – T1 Profiles, Spiider LED wash beams plus Divine 160 RGBW LED floods – have been installed as the house lighting package at Magazine London, a new event space in North Greenwich.

The largest of Magazine’s internal spaces is Space 2. The interior fit-out comprises over 2,100 OSB boards to bring a warmer wall finish to the warehouse-style design of the building. In total, the project used nearly 14 miles of timber, as well as around 150,000 screws and 757.5 litres of paint to stain the venue in a specific shade of black; RAL9005.

Simon Jones, Technical Consultant of events and production management company, SJ-TPM, was brought in to coordinate everything related to event production, including the lighting.

Once a basic lighting requirements brief had been constructed, he started discussions with several leading manufacturers to get an overview of the available technologies.

From this research, he produced a sensible house lighting budget which was approved by the Venue Lab team.

LED light sources were a given, and with the other considerations proposed, this resulted in the purchase of the 14 Spiiders, 16 T1 Profiles and 65 Divine 160

RGBW flood/washes from Robe to be installed in the venue.

RIEDEL’S INTERCOM IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT SADLER’S WELLS Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London has adopted Riedel’s Bolero wireless intercom to ensure reliable and flexible communications across the 10,000 square metre building and the adjacent Lilian Baylis Studio.

Located on London’s iconic Rosebery Avenue, the theatre is renowned as one of the world’s leading dance venues, staging contemporary dance and ballet performances in its 1,560 seat main auditorium.

The fourth antenna uses the IT department infrastructure and covers the cafeteria and the entire Lilian Baylis Studio.

The setup also provides coverage for all basement areas including technical offices, dressing rooms, and the orchestra pit, and even provides full coverage in the Sadler’s Wells Studios – despite the studios’ separation from the antennas by several concrete walls.

“The Sadler’s Wells team has taken full advantage of Bolero’s customisability and has fully tailored the system to the theatre’s needs,” says Nacho Lee, UK Sales Manager at Riedel Communications. “The team has made extensive use of Bolero’s profile function, giving each full-time member of staff a dedicated Bolero beltpack that has been set to a profile specific to that person’s requirements. In this way, parameters like volume, screen brightness, and quick menus are preset to the user’s liking.”

Mark Noble, Head of Sound at Sadler’s Wells, has designed highly creative workflows for Bolero using the theatre’s NSA-002A interface. In one example, the team has reassigned Bolero’s red reply button on stage managers’ beltpacks to open a channel to the paging system through the 4W-Interface. This enables stage managers to use the paging system to make backstage calls to all the dressing rooms and other backstage areas from wherever they are. With another profile, the reply button switches between brightness modes to allow the user to remain unseen onstage. The theatre’s NSA-002A sits on a comms network switch that is attached to Wi-Fi, making it easy to reconfigure on the go using a tablet.

CABLE MANAGEMENT SOLUTION FOR LANCASHIRE UNIVERSITY Whilst developing the new Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) at the University of Central Lancashire, contractor NG Bailey required a durable trunking system that would have the capacity to accommodate large data cables.

YORKSHIRE WATER APPOINTS SMITH BROTHERS FOR £55M FRAMEWORK

Electrical engineering firm, Smith Brothers Contracting, has secured a position on Yorkshire Water’s high-voltage (HV) electrical design, build, and specialist studies services framework – which carries a total forecast value of up to £55m.

The framework will deliver high-voltage electrical works and services – including design, build, installation, refurbishment and support – alongside routine planned and reactive inspection and maintenance to Yorkshire Water’s existing high-voltage equipment.

The Elland-based power contracting firm will take responsibly for all projects in the west region, for a minimum of four years – to February 2023 – with the first being the design and build of a new 11kV customer substation, and the replacement of a motor control centre (MCC).

STAYCITY HOTEL PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION Quartzelec is delivering the £4 million mechanical and electrical elements of a new StayCity Aparthotel project on Mason Street in Manchester.

Working with Bardsley Construction as the main contractor, this 40‑week project will see 224 bedroom units and public areas built and fitted out to an exceptionally high standard within a new eight-storey steel frame and brick clad structure.

Working to a detailed and high-specification design that features modern chrome fixtures and quality fittings, Quartzelec is responsible for delivering all of the electrical installation elements. This includes installing an estimated 200km of cabling for all the internal and external general power requirements, along with all the main and emergency lighting, fire and security cabling, plus all data and TV installations.

The team will also be fitting all primary fixtures and undertaking the integration of all cooking and white goods. The mechanical elements include all above ground water installation, kitchen plumbing and sanitaryware, plus the heat recovery, ventilation and sophisticated control systems via a building management system servicing both the individual apartments and the public space services.

The £4m M&E element of the Mason Street project was awarded to Quartzelec in late 2018

TRAINING LORD MAYOR OPENS NEW JTL CENTRE On October 18, JTL, the national training provider for electrical, plumbing and heating apprenticeships, invited the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Janet Looker, to officially open its new centre in York.

Is infrared heating safe and comfortable?

Infrared is actually the oldest and most natural type of heat, as it’s what the sun emits – but without any harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Infrared heat is a lot healthier than traditional convection heat, as it transmits natural heat in an efficient and safe way, eliminating the unhealthy emissions and smells that come with gas heaters and oil burners, whilst guaranteeing clear air with zero emissions and no odour.

Infrared heating is so safe, in fact, that far infrared (FIR), the gentlest form of infrared, is often used in incubators for babies to keep them warm.

Can infrared panels burn?

LUSH LIFE FOR COSMETICS RETAILER With hot water playing a central role in Lush shops across the UK, it’s vital to have a cylinder that provides a reliable supply. Here, we look at how Heatrae Sadia has helped at the retailer’s Norwich branch.

ith hot water playing a central role in Lush shops across the UK, having a cylinder that can provide a reliable supply of hot water is vital.

When the Norwich branch of the fresh handmade cosmetics retailer moved to a larger unit in order to meet rising customer demand, a new hot water cylinder was needed to supply enough water for product demonstrations and use in staff facilities throughout the day – no matter the time of year.

After 15 years on the high street, the Norwich branch of Lush found itself unable to meet rising demand for events and parties in the store. The decision was taken to move the branch to a new and improved site that could comfortably play

host to visitors, allowing them to immerse themselves in the Lush experience – including watching the latest product demonstrations in any one of the shop’s eight basins.

All hands-on deck “Unlike our bath bombs, which are designed to fizzle out, we will look to continue our relationship with Heatrae Sadia.”

Before the team could move from one store to the next, the new unit had to receive its very own makeover. Alex Scott, UK and Ireland Retail Project Manager at Lush, explains, “When moving into a shopping centre location, you often find that the units are stripped back so that you are left with a blank canvas, services are capped off and the room is bare. Our contractors will go into the property and plaster the walls, put up the ceilings and fit the plumbing system to meet the anticipated needs of staff and customers.”

Before Lush moved into the store, there were no hot water provisions in place.

“As the heart of the plumbing system, getting the cylinder specification right was an absolute necessity,” Scott notes.

“Starting from scratch offered us the chance to specify our own cylinder, and the decision was made to install the Megaflo Eco Unvented Direct Cylinder.”

Scott continues, “The decision to work with Heatrae Sadia was taken owing to its respect for people and the environment, combined with its vast industry knowledge. The electric water heating supplier has a clear sustainability policy which highlights its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of production and assembly of its products.

This environmental transparency aligns closely with our own efforts to improve our sustainability.

“The Norwich store has eight sinks, varying from 25 litres to 50 litres. During peak times of the year, such as Christmas, demonstrations of products take place every 15 minutes, and this means that our cylinders must be able to comfortably meet our water needs with no pause in output.

No shop manager wants to find themselves in the nightmare scenario of running out of water, particularly during the holidays.

When I specify a cylinder, I work to futureproof the hot-water supply by specifying according to the maximum load required during the year – for Lush, this is the Christmas period.”

Signs of trouble The opening of the new Lush shop in Norwich didn’t immediately go as expected.

The installation of a cylinder that was not the specified Megaflo Eco led to water supply issues.

Scott explains, “I received a call from the branch manager to say that by midday, the shop had run out of hot water. Having personally specified the Megaflo Eco, I knew it had a capacity of 300 litres and a recovery time that outstrips many of our existing water heating systems, so I knew there was a serious problem.

“It didn’t take long to discover the cause of the problems facing the store – ‘Megaflo’ had been taken to mean ‘cylinder’ and a large domestic cylinder had been installed in place of the Megaflo Eco. The team at Heatrae were excellent in providing ongoing support and assistance throughout the rectification process. They quickly helped us to source what we needed to get the store back to peak performance. The installation only took us a few hours to complete, and once we’d carried out the required chlorination test, the water system was back up and running.

“As soon as the remedial work was carried out and the Megaflo Eco was installed, the shop manager noticed an immediate difference. We’ve not had a water supply issue in the Norwich store since. This has certainly been a lesson learnt – unless it says ‘Megaflo’, it’s not a ‘Megaflo’.”

A future splash The Norwich branch of Lush isn’t the only store getting the Megaflo treatment, as the brand looks set to continue its relationship with Heatrae Sadia in the coming future.

BUILDING THE PERFECT NETWORK In this month’s column on custom installation, Phil Hansen, Marketing Director and Co-Owner of Connected Distribution, provides a guide on how electrical contractors can build the best networks in a customer’s home.

A

ll multi-room systems, be they audio, video or both, rely upon a network in the customer’s house. This is the building block upon which you attach and connect the various elements that make up a system. So, this is where we must start on your journey to becoming an installer.

Simple plug and play multi-room streaming audio systems, such as the type purchased from high street electrical stores, rely upon the wireless network installed into the customer’s house by the likes of BT, Virgin or Sky. And for the most part, they work perfectly well, but that’s because the amount of data being moved around, especially with low bit rate MP3 audio quality, is relatively small and Wi-Fi can cope with it.

Network congestion Start talking about Ultra HD TV signals, or very high-resolution audio, and the network can start to get congested – especially if the kids are playing online games, while someone else is streaming the latest blockbuster in UHD and another user is having a Facetime call with relatives in Sydney! This is perhaps why the high street multi-room audio products don’t do highres music, and why the Sky Q system won’t send UHD to the Sky Q Mini boxes.

Throw in to the mix a whole-house control system that’s pulling all the devices together, multiple wall-mounted touch screen controllers, long distances from the video sources to the TVs, and add these to the UHD video, high-res audio and the kids playing games – and it’s easy to see why networks can struggle. The simple routers supplied by the service providers are not designed to cope with this amount of data.

There’s a reason why they are free.

So, step number one is to replace the freebie with something a little more robust.

There are a number of good quality models available, from companies like Draytek, Netgear, D-Link and other brands. We would definitely suggest that you invest in one of these for your install before progressing any further.

Be prepared though – your customers may well react against the suggestion that their router be removed because it isn’t up to the task, as they sometimes feel, “It has been supplied by a reputable company, who know what they are doing and won’t send rubbish out”. And while this is true, they do supply products that are not designed for the very high bandwidth usage that a whole house install can subject them to. This is often the first uphill struggle that installers face when quoting for jobs, but be persistent, as it will be in yours and your customer’s best interest to put a robust product in place. After all, your customer is soon going to get fed up when their system keeps falling over, and you are going to get fed up of the call outs to go and fix it.

Even Wi-Fi has its limits The other key thing to watch for is an insistence from the customer that everything be done over Wi-Fi. This is another potential recipe for disaster, as even a good quality Wi-Fi router will have its limits. Plus, the construction of modern houses, with walls lined with foil backed plasterboard, are a really effective barrier for wireless signals.

If at all possible, you should run CAT6 cables around the property to every room and point at which you need access to the network – e.g. the TV, the audio streamers, wall mounted control panels, security systems, CCTV etc. Of course, that’s easier said than done in a post-build installation, but it’s worth the effort in the long term.

In a new build, it is a no-brainer. And always put in a lot more cable than you think you’ll need – for example, for a smart TV, put at least two runs in, and preferably three. You’ll need one for the TV’s smart functionality, one for potentially routing the video signal over HDBaseT (we’ll cover this in detail next month), and one as a spare for future use.

Adapters not the answer?

Don’t be tempted by Powerline type adapters either. On the face of it they seem like a good idea as they use the mains cabling in the house to route the Ethernet signals from one location to another, and that has to be better than Wi-Fi – right? Wrong!

They are a cheap and easy fit solution that do have their place for some applications, such as providing a Wi-Fi extension point, but for a whole house audio/video system, they are not up to the job. Because they use the ring main cables, they are susceptible to picking up electrical interference, which can manifest itself in degraded performance when it comes to data transmission speeds, and therefore visible and audible issues.

They emit radio frequency interference which can be picked up by DAB and FM radios – an issue the BBC has investigated and has taken up with parliament. They also only work if both ends are on the same ring main and they do lose speed – something that we can’t afford to happen when moving large amounts of data around for UHD TV etc.

Cables, cables, cables – they are the best solution.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Emma Segelov, EMEA Marketing Communications Manager at MK Electric, discusses the latest innovations to assist electrical contractors to complete a job as smoothly as possible, whilst keeping waste to a minimum.

I

t’s an all too familiar situation: in the busy, sometimes chaotic, environment of a construction site, fittings and fixtures get delivered, then are nowhere to be seen once required. Often, items are disposed of in error or mistakenly stored at the opposite end of a build, making it enormously challenging to keep track of every product that gets supplied to site.

This is supported by several shocking statistics. For example, 13 million of the 90 million tonnes thrown away by the construction industry each year are unused materials. Whilst there are no figures to indicate how much of this is due to mix-ups on-site, it is likely that this could make up a significant proportion of the waste. Given the growing pressure on all businesses to become more sustainable, this is a serious concern. The construction industry contributes £90 billion to the UK economy and employs 2.9 million people, so it’s vital that the industry continues to thrive; but in a less wasteful, more environmentally friendly way.

A second issue is damage during construction. Naturally, certain items will be installed whilst work is ongoing – for example, wiring devices and accessories – which places them directly in the path of potential harm. Whether that means paint splatter or scratching, there are many ways a product can be damaged on a building site.

Overall, product returns cost the Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) supply chain an estimated £1bn to 2.4bn in lost revenue per annum. Of this, damaged product makes up to 6%, equating to around £156m in value.

From a contractor and site manager’s perspective, this is problematic. The requirements of insurance against damage incurred to materials on-site can be complex, which means that accidental harm caused to a product may simply mean the item has to be ordered and paid for again. Given that over a third of all projects go over budget, this is an equally relevant consideration.

Accounting for loss and damage For manufacturers, these twin issues – loss and damage – pose a real challenge in meeting the needs of their customers.

Whilst there is only so much a manufacturer can do once their product has left the factory floor, the significance of these concerns means that there is considerable thought given to what can be done to minimise the risks once it reaches site.

MK Electric spoke with key stakeholders, including contractors, specifiers and end-clients such as housebuilders and hotel developers, to assess what they felt were the main challenges involved in ordering and installing wiring devices during the build phase. The core responses related to the common risks of part loss and damage, along with the difficulties of storing products on site.

Another frequently raised issue was that if a frontplate is not installed until a later stage (to protect it), then the functional module may not be compliant with wiring regulations. This means that the device would not be usable, leaving a site without the power necessary for tools and cleaning apparatus.

Equally, uncertainty from the decision maker can often lead to waste. For example, if a frontplate is not decided until a later stage, this can delay the project; or alternatively, if there is a lastminute change to the design scheme, new frontplates may need to be ordered and installed, potentially leading to an additional cost both for the new fixture and further labour.

Time is of the essence for electricians, and product damage or loss can also result in frustrating and costly delays for the contractor.

Reduce damage with a two-part installation The obvious answer to reducing damage is a two-part installation – allowing the functional module to be installed whilst the frontplate is safely put aside to guard against abrasions or paint splatter. This still leaves two points of difficulty: the first being the risk of losing the frontplate whilst it is waiting for installation and the

second that the functional module may not be compliant with wiring regulations and therefore unusable. What’s more, this still does not allow for adjustments to the design scheme and would still require a new order should there be any amendments to the original plan.

In response to this customer feedback, and the numerous problems presented, MK Electric developed its MK Dimensions range of wiring devices – specifically designed to meet the needs of its customer base.

Whilst MK Dimensions offers a two-part installation, it offers the two individual components as separate parts, with individual order numbers. This means that whilst the functional module can be ordered independently and installed at any stage, the frontplate does not need to be fitted until the last minute.

This avoids both loss and damage hazards, and means that the frontplate design does not need to be confirmed until later in the construction phase, allowing for any late changes.

In terms of tackling usability, and protecting the functional module, MK Dimensions products are supplied with a protective cover. The cover ensures that the device meets British Standards and therefore the functional module is fully operational, allowing work to continue as usual. The cover is also recyclable, cutting down on the amount of waste which goes to the landfill, helping companies to meet their sustainability targets.

As a further benefit, the final frontplate is clip-on, saving valuable time, and tool removable – so, if at a future date the building undergoes a revamp, they can be easily interchanged and fitted by a less experienced worker.

A WIDESCREEN VIEW OF ELECTRICAL TESTING Dot matrix displays have revolutionised the production of portable electronic instrumentation, explains Brendan Beaver, UK Sales Manager of electrical test solutions provider, Metrel.

D

ot matrix displays initially started appearing in high value laboratory equipment for the electronic engineer, and then later, started to enter the realms of the HV electrical engineer, in the rarefied environment of the substations for relay testing. Dot matrix touch-activated screens have now reached the rough, tough world of the electrical contractor.

Until recently, test measurements made on LV installations were displayed on custom produced LCD screens. The advantage of using these screens for multi-function testers was that they are relatively inexpensive for the manufacturer.

The disadvantage was that they have a limited amount of space to display useful information, and they are totally inflexible.

Should the regulations change and require a new test, such as with EVSE testing, the firmware in the instrument can change, but the screens cannot display the result. This means that the user must purchase a whole new tester to have access to the additional test.

Pioneering dot matrix displays Metrel pioneered the use of dot matrix displays, realising their flexibility both for displaying information to the user and their potential for change, making updating products easier and keeping electrical contractors happy.

Initially, Metrel introduced monochrome screens without the touch facility, using knobs and buttons to navigate through the menus. Customers, not just in Britain but in Australia and New Zealand, took to the idea quickly; as the testers did not just display results, but other useful information like test parameters expressed in plain English (rather than icons).

Help screens were also available to assist when the memory failed.

Most electrical contractors don’t spend their lives testing, but designing and actually doing the installation work. Testing can occupy less than 5% of their working life.

The results for a sequence of tests, such as the Auto RCD test, can be displayed on a single screen with a clear pass or fail indication, so the numbers can be quickly identified for recording or saving on-board; avoiding the slow scrolling process that normally follows such a test.

And the operating system is a constant, so the user can move from a multi-function tester to a PAT tester and feel at home.

Let’s look a bit closer at the flexibility Metrel instruments, like the multi-function tester MI3152, gain from their unique screens. Back in 2015, Amendment 3 of the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations included a mention of the measurement of voltage drop and of the assessment of power quality in its appendix. The 18th Edition has done the same. It has been suggested that these tests will be introduced into the regulations by amendment one, when that’s published, to the horror of manufacturers of traditional LCD screen testers.

Reducing user frustration Cheap testers use slow resistive technology screens, while Metrel’s MI3155 and MI3152 use responsive capacitive technology screens to avoid user frustration.

The screens are brightly lit and easy to read for those of us with failing sight. Tests are clearly colour coded to make it easier for the operator. The parameters for the tests can be shown throughout the test, to reduce the risk of mistakes such as testing a Type AC RCD as a Type A because the tiny icon was not noticed.

And if you were an early purchaser of the multi-function tester, you did not miss out. Users could upgrade their firmware, not by returning it to the manufacturer, but by downloading the firmware direct from the Metrel website themselves.

The upgrade included a specific voltage drop measurement test, for ΔU, and includes it in other test sequences where it is relevant.

This sounds great, but how do you set about doing the test? And what connections do you have to make? These are available from the tester. A set of help screens will show you the connections required when you press the question mark icon.

As you can see from the display (pictured on the facing page), there are two steps required. Firstly, a Zref is taken at the board, and then at the farend of the installation. You can make the connections, press the test button and get a result, with a pass or fail indication.

The same can be said of testing car charging points to the 18th Edition.

Metrel multi-function testers are the only ones that do the full job, testing the EV RCD to 30mA AC and 6mA DC. Again, early adopters won’t lose out, as they can download the full test sequence from the website for free; which is very different from manufacturers using LCD screens, which often expect the user to buy another tester.

Responding to the potential changes Having confirmed the hardware could supply the measurements required, Metrel modified the instrument firmware by introducing a voltage drop measurement, and – for the first time on an instrument in this class – a suite of power quality measurements, such as THD to the 12th harmonic.

EARTH LEAKAGE AND THE 18TH EDITION When the 18th Edition was released in early 2019, very few electricians realised the updates with regard to nuisance tripping. David Sweetman, Marketing and Business Development Director of Di-Log, looks at the implications.

T

he 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations features a new regulation identifying the requirement for you to measure earth leakage, as stated in BS7671 Reg 531.33.2. In a nutshell, this means that each electrician must check that each install completed does not have excessive leakage to earth on each of the RCDs or RCBOs. The maximum permitted value per RCD has been set at 30% of the nominal value – i.e. a 30mA RCD would be no more than 9mA, 100mA would be 30mA, and so on.

Never the less, I am sure you would find it useful to know if there is a potential issue on an installation before you quote for your next distribution board change.

The only way to indicate the presence of earth leakage would be to use an earth leakage current clamp meter.

up entirely of RCBOs. If the installation shows a combined differential leakage current above 30% of each RCD/RCBO value – in this case 9mA – you may need to take action to manage the leakage to earth and minimise the likelihood of nuisance tripping.

You all know how costly callouts are to any business to reset or investigate tripping RCD. Where possible, you will need to have the day to day electrical appliances in operation to accurately determine potential issues. If excessive leakage is then identified on the tails, you would then in turn need to clamp around the live and neutral conductors of each of the RCDs to determine if the leakage on that RCD is above the 30% threshold, ideally looking for a current considerably less than 9mA, repeat for each RCD.

Accurate measurement

If the earth leakage detected on each RCD is excessive, the user will need to ask the question ‘Is this intentional or unintentional?’Intentional earth leakage tends to be found in electrical appliances in the form of a functioning earth, where a small amount of earth leakage is required for the appliance to function.

Unintentional earth leakage tends to occur in poor installations where there could be a breakdown in the conductor insulation, moisture ingress, amongst many other causes.

The Di-Log DL6518 earth leakage clamp is a low-cost solution that works on differential leakage measurement, which involves simultaneously clamping around the live and neutral conductors together.

You can check any installation by simply clamping around your meter tails on the supply. The DL6518 has a measurement resolution of 100µA (0.1mA), making measurement very accurate when measuring minimal AC currents.

Intentional or unintentional leakage

Identification Switching each individual circuit off, one by one, is a good area to start. Here, you can easily identify which circuit you may need to investigate further. Once a circuit is identified, eliminate the intentional leakage first by switching off each individual appliance one by one to see if this changes the result.

Every electrical appliance has a ‘protective earth conductor current’ limit (for more on this, refer to the ‘In service inspection and testing’ code of practice for more details on these limits). If the isolating of electrical appliances does not change the result, it may well be unintentional leakage, and a check of the insulation of the conductors will be required in the form of an insulation test.

Leakage management There is an array of options to manage your earth leakage, balancing circuits between RCDs to fall below the 30% threshold, fitting RCBOs, testing the electrical appliances or even a complete re-wire – all of which are critical when you price your next job.

ENERGY, CONTROL AND A COST-SAVING INCENTIVE The PrefectIrus controls system from Prefect Controls, which monitors, measures and manages energy usage in multiple occupancy properties, is now 100% tax deductible – making it an even more appealing option.

An ECA is claimed through a business’s income or corporation tax return in the same way as any other capital allowance.

Designed for multioccupancy properties Businesses buying products listed on ETL can also make significant energy savings.

PrefectIrus is a building management system specifically designed for multi-occupancy properties, such as student accommodation or hotels – and controls rooms individually. PrefectIrus ensures energy is only used when heating is required, and if rooms are empty or windows are open, the system

automatically reverts to lower settings – only increasing temperatures when inhabitants return. Occupants have control over the comfort of their environment, but ultimately, energy managers have control over energy use via the web-based portal.

Along with temperature, PrefectIrus also controls and monitors humidity, light, CO2 and decibel levels as well as hot water – even alerting management if leaks are detected.

Another useful feature is the ability to automatically buy energy when tariffs are low, avoiding costly peak times use.

By embedding the ETL into procurement processes, organisations can ensure they are buying the best energyefficient products. Doing this will reduce the time it takes to find good quality products, and can deliver resource, energy and financial savings.

KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE PULSE Following extensive trials, the Pulse air leakage measurement method has been proposed within Future Homes Standard consultations. ECN looks at the potential impact this new test method could have on the industry.

T

he Future Homes Standard consultation, which covers both Part L (conservation of fuel and power) and Part F (ventilation) of the Building Regulations, proposes that all new dwellings should have an air tightness test – but it also seeks views on introducing the low pressure Pulse technology as an alternative method of air tightness testing.

Pulse technology, originally pioneered by the University of Nottingham and brought to market by Build Test Solutions – an innovator in building performance measurement – has been the subject of extensive field trials, product development and third-party verification.

The inclusion within the consultation therefore represents a significant step in the journey towards delivering this particular leakage measurement innovation to industry.

Enhanced measurement capabilities Pulse is a new test method that is complimentary to the existing blower door fan test. Each offers a specific range of features and benefits to the operative, with Pulse specifically developed to enable the measurement of air leakage directly at pressures representative of ordinary conditions (typically four Pascal); whereas a blower door fan will usually test in the 30 to 60 Pascal range.

This, in turn, provides insight into the background ventilation rate of a building, helping to assess the suitability and likely performance of the ventilation system specified or already installed. This measurement of air leakage directly at four Pascal is also particularly important where accurate whole building energy performance calculations are required, or where risks such as poor ventilation system performance or associated matters – such as poor indoor air quality or overheating – are a high priority.

Calls for a new air leakage cap Presently, a lower air leakage limit of 1.5 m3/h/m2 at 50Pa is proposed for the system, but the developers are confident that this cap can be lifted, with adjustments to the product having now been made that have shown the system able to reliably measure a series of certified Passivhaus properties with air change rates of between one and 0.5 m3/h/m2 at 50Pa.

The Pulse measurement itself is dynamic and completed in a matter of seconds. For this reason, it is not possible to use the method to identify air leakage paths. It is, however, quick and simple to retest, and Build Test Solutions also offers its leak checker product as a complimentary low-cost window mounted fan to enable further diagnostic work to be carried out when required.

Another target market for the leak checker are site teams and contractors who themselves could also use the tool throughout the build phase, ultimately improving the chances of a first time oncompletion compliance test.

Although early days in terms of unlocking the market, Build Test Solutions has also been working with the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the Construction Innovation Hub and other key stakeholders to redesign its Pulse product in response to industry feedback about its portability when used on live construction sites.

“The Pulse system presents a new and exciting means of measuring the air leakage characteristics of buildings under ambient conditions. It is hoped that this will provide new insights into the performance of buildings and their associated ventilation systems,” says Luke Smith, Managing Director at Build Test Solutions.

He continues, “Pulse stands to offer a solution for providing new metrics, as well as an improved means of testing other types of buildings and enclosures such as existing homes, non-residential buildings (through tethering of multiple Pulse devices), laboratories, health care environments and gaseous fire suppression facilities such as data centres, server rooms and stores.”

Even up to the early 1970s, designs were basic, product development was limited and there was little consideration to the working environments in which most workers plied their trade.

Think about it – how much enduser research went into a boiler suit consisting of a single piece of clothing that combines trousers and a jacket to be worn over clothes in order to protect them from dirt while working? Or a bib-and-brace overall, which is a pair of trousers with braces attached?

The simplicity of some workwear designs and their terminology – then and now – has long been overtaken by R&D, fabric technology and end-user demand that are all at the heart of today’s serious workwear development.

Designing working clothes for professional tradespeople has become something of a science in itself, with fabrics and garments developed to suit everything, from different working environments and weather conditions to body shapes and personal wellness on site.

The workwear industry is awash with technology and terms – such as Coolmax and wicking fabrics, wearable and 37.5 technology – and even things like integrated electrostatic dissipative protective benefits.

What we wear is bound not only by personal needs, but also by health and safety standards and regulations that govern performance and personal

protection. But how does all of this impact on or improve personal wellbeing and performance at work?

Enclothed cognition is basically the influence that clothes have on the wearer’s mindset.

Essentially, it’s said that clothing can enhance how we feel about ourselves and how it can improve our performance at work.

Researchers have identified a series of mindset changes that occur when we wear certain clothes. It’s said that the clothes we wear and how we wear them affect our behaviour, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, and even the way we interact with others.

For instance, compare the individual who wears baggy jogging bottoms and an old sweatshirt to the one dressed in good looking working clothes, properly designed for working on site. There are both making a statement – about themselves, their mindset and their attitude to their work.

What we wear definitely affects the way we feel. Our clothes tell a story about who we are, and most importantly, how we feel about ourselves.

However, even if you use workwear, poorly designed and ill-fitting working clothes can have a serious affect – not just on your mood and effectiveness on site, but your overall health and wellbeing.

ENHANCED POWER PROTECTION High-quality power protection is essential to a huge variety of corporate, private and public sector installations. Alex Emms, Operations Director at Kohler Uninterruptible Power (KUP), looks at the challenges and solutions available for universities.

ith universities’ large populations, power problems can threaten public safety as well as multiple educational and administrative ICT systems. A power failure could take out campus lights, phones, computers, and even electrically controlled door locks. Such results could create panic or disorder incidents.

Additionally, universities are increasingly embedding technology into education. Leicester University, for example, uses a ‘One iPad per student’ programme. Students bring their iPads to every class session to take notes, capture online resources, collaborate in groupwork sessions and use multimedia learning materials. Other universities in the UK and world-wide are implementing similar ‘1:1’ policies.

This demands faster internet and WiFi connectivity. The associated wireless network infrastructures require power protection, allowing education to continue through any mains electricity problems.

The power must be clean, as well as uninterrupted, to prevent damage from surges or sags caused by, for example, air conditioning.

Most universities, particularly research-intensive facilities, conduct complex laboratory experiments. These may need to run for extended periods, so power interruptions could destroy either experiment or data.

Alongside administrative data processing requirements, universities increasingly employ sophisticated communications networks for phones, group mailing, web conferencing, voting systems, reporting, and intranets. Edinburgh University also uses virtualisation technology for software delivery.

What type of power infrastructure is needed?

It’s clear that lack of power protection can cause widespread safety and data issues.

Robust IT and networking infrastructures are integral to smooth campus operation, with students and faculties reasonably expecting 24/7 access. So what should an educational facility look for in candidate power infrastructure suppliers?

Any contending company must be competent to deliver comprehensive solutions comprising UPS, generator and emergency lighting. Equally, they must have proven expertise in installing, commissioning and maintaining the equipment throughout its operational life.

UPS and generators complement one another perfectly. On mains power failure, a true online UPS continues delivering the seamless uninterrupted power essential to much ICT equipment. However, its battery autonomy, however large, is always vulnerable to sufficiently prolonged blackouts. Conversely, a generator cannot start quickly enough to avoid a power interruption intolerable to ICT loads, but, once running, can continue indefinitely with sufficient fuel.

UPS attributes Maximum possible reliability and availability are essential to any UPS solution.

Competitive purchase pricing must be complemented by efficient operation, both to control costs and to minimise the site’s carbon footprint. Compact design, easy installation and maintenance are essential, as many university faculties can be housed in buildings possibly hundreds of years old with few specialised areas for power equipment.

Above all, flexibility and scalability are required, allowing UPS capacity to grow with developing campus requirements.

Modern, modular UPS systems offer the attributes essential to resolving these issues.

Any chosen generator must accept an Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) detection signal, alerting it to start up and handle any power problem that the UPS cannot. It must also start quickly and reliably on demand, and, once running, supply an AC waveform stable in both amplitude and frequency.

Generator reliability comes from careful maintenance, an adequate fuel supply for the diesel engine, and a healthy starting battery. Generators may also benefit from

a heating jacket. Voltage amplitude is set by the alternator windings, and stability is controlled by an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). Frequency stability, which is essential for UPS synchronisation, is best managed by electronic engine governors, which are superior to mechanical types.

SMART THINKING — IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE Our increasing dependence on smart energy grids offers organisations the chance to turn an under-utilised asset into a valuable money-maker, according to Riello UPS General Manager, Leo Craig.

W

hile most of you will already be looking forward to what 2020 has in store, for those of us in the power continuity sector, it’s inevitable that the events of August 9th haven’t drifted too far away from our thoughts.

For those in need of a reminder, that was the day when the country faced its biggest blackout for years. Two power plants disconnected from the grid, with the subsequent loss of nearly 1,500 MW of generation causing grid frequency to drop to unsafe levels.

As a result, 5% of Britain had their electricity cut off (nearly one million customers) to protect the rest of the network from a bigger failure. Thankfully, power was restored within the hour. National Grid deployed 1,000 MW of reserves to bring the frequency back within range.

In the aftermath, there were questions about whether the grid had enough backup power. But opinion was unanimous on the pivotal part battery storage had played in minimising the incident’s impact. Totalling 475 MW, it accounted for nearly half of our electricity system’s vital safety net.

As the way we produce power continues on a zero-carbon route, such energy storage is likely to take on an increasingly important role in keeping the grid balanced.

Rethinking the role of UPS systems

Evolving energy mix This year marks a watershed for energy in the UK. It’ll be the first time since the Industrial Revolution where low-carbon sources – renewables and nuclear – generate more electricity than coal and gas.

In Q3 of 2019, renewables provided more electricity than fossil fuels (40% versus 39%) across a quarter for the first time.

Records for coal-free periods of power generation have tumbled throughout the year. While by the end of June alone, the UK had totalled 1,838 hours of coal-free electricity. That’s more than the whole of 2018.

All these trends paint a positive environmental picture, but they pose problems for the National Grid. By their nature, renewables are more unpredictable than coal or even nuclear. You can’t guarantee when the wind will blow!

This makes balancing supply with demand and maintaining a stable grid frequency a tricky test.

Decentralised, flexible smart grids harnessing the benefits of onsite generation and battery storage offer a solution to these challenges.

These two-way networks enable energy consumers to become power generators too, while real-time adjustments and mechanisms – such as demand side response (DSR) – make sure supply meets need.

Sometimes known as demand side management, DSR incentivises larger-scale electricity users to shift and/or reduce energy consumption to help ease pressures on the wider grid. In essence, it involves storing cheaper off-peak electricity and then using it instead of expensive peak mains supply.

Organisations gain from lower energy bills and reduced tariffs. They can even earn additional revenues by ‘selling’ surplus power back into the grid.

For energy-intensive facilities such as data centres, hospitals and manufacturing plants, DSR also offers an opportunity to transform an under-utilised asset into a valuable money-maker.

UPS & POWER DISTRIBUTION Apart from rare incidents such as August’s blackout, the UK’s electricity system is robust. Most organisations dependent on IT equipment and other electrical devices deploy uninterruptible power supplies to provide backup power in the event of such an outage.

But while UPS systems are musthave insurance against damaging downtime, how often is that backup actually called upon?

Thanks to advances in UPS and battery technology, it’s now possible to transform a UPS system into a virtual power plant that can contribute to demand side response without impacting on resilience.

Smart grid-ready UPS use either premium sealed lead-acid (SLA) or lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, backed with sophisticated battery monitoring systems.

Li-ion, in particular, is becoming a commercially viable option which delivers several significant advantages over SLA. It offers the same power density in less than half the space and weight, faster recharge times, and up to 50 times the cycle life.

It’s true lithium-ion incurs a higher upfront capital cost. But it has a 10 to 15year lifespan, during which SLA batteries would require replacing two or three times.

So, over a decade, choosing Li-ion can cut total cost of ownership by 10% to 40%.

So far, data centre operators and similar mission-critical facilities have been reluctant to deploy their batteries for anything other than emergency backup.

At first glance, that seems sensible. Why

add an unnecessary layer of risk to your ultimate insurance policy?

But UPS battery failure is already a major issue. Without expensive battery monitoring, it’s difficult to determine the condition of traditional SLA batteries. Can you be 100% certain they’ll kick-in when called upon?

With smart grid-ready UPS, the premium batteries are constantly monitored at an individual cell level. Any showing the first signs of deterioration can be quickly replaced. That gives you greater confidence the batteries will work when you really need them.

Powering the future There are several DSR schemes businesses can tap into using their batteries. ‘Reserve Services’ cover unexpected spikes in demand or a lack of generation. ‘Frequency Response’ aims to ensure a balanced grid frequency.

Firm Frequency Response provides payments to organisations that can reduce demand or turn up generation within seconds of an incident such as a power station tripping out, like the one that triggered August’s blackout.

National Grid already spends £170 million a year on Frequency Response contracts. However, its report into August’s incident, as well as a separate investigation by the Energy Emergencies Executive Committee (E3C), questions whether reserve capacity needs to be increased.

Lewden’s modular topTER series of distribution boards is the ideal solution to meet this requirement, allowing the possibility of incorporating up to four 16A or 32A switched interlocked sockets within a single unit. The flexible and robust enclosure design of the Caravan Hook up units allows either 16A or 32A switched interlocked sockets to be interchanged on the same fixing flange and wire harness, making it easy to upgrade additional sockets quickly at a later stage.

The interlocking arrangement is achieved mechanically via the socket outlet and an integral AC3-AC23A category isolator switch. The switch cannot be selected to the ‘on’ position unless a plug has first been inserted, and it’s not possible to withdraw the plug from the outlet unless the isolator has been selected to ‘off’.

PRYSMIAN INTRODUCES CPR COMPLIANT DRAKA CATEGORY 6 CABLE Following extensive research and development, Prysmian Group, the world’s largest cable manufacturer, has launched its new Draka UC400 23 Category 6 U/UTP LSHF D65 B2ca data cable that is fully compliant with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR).

The new UK manufactured Draka cable has a genuine Euroclass B2ca s1a d1 a1 fire performance rating for full CPR compliance without compromising data transmission levels. It delivers full Category 6 / Class E compliant electrical performance.

Prysmian has invested considerable resources in developing the new cable, with success achieved through a range of material engineering developments, optimisation of the cable construction design (including a fine balancing of the volume of air spaces within the cable) and fine tuning of the manufacturing processes.

At the same time, the new cable remains compact, with a high degree of flexibility for easy installation, with Draka claiming there is no difference in handling performance to its existing high density Dca rated cables.

C-TEC LAUNCHES NEW BS 5839-6 DOMESTIC FIRE ALARM KIT

BESA BOX SOCKET OUTLET RANGE Metway’s BESA box socket outlet range is available in three, four and six-pole versions and is designed to fit straight onto a standard round UK plastic or metal Besa conduit box.

Typical applications for this type of connector would be any installation that has fire regulations insisting on mechanical containment of cabling within the building fabric, such as where the use of conduit and conduit boxes is required. Typical examples are hospitals, retail, government buildings and council offices, airports, and large multi-use office blocks – especially for CAT ‘A’ installations.

NEW GEMINI RANGE OF LED CABINET LIGHTS GreenBrook Electrical has launched a new LED cabinet light fitting to expand its range of stylish and flexible low energy lighting targeted for both commercial and residential markets.

LEGRAND BOOSTS SALAMANDRE RANGE WITH IP55 RATED DISTRIBUTION TRUNKING Following increased demand for a trunking system that is suitable for more challenging environments, Legrand has introduced an IP55 rated distribution trunking to its renowned Salamandre range of cable management solutions.

Featuring a clear powder coating (CPC), the system offers extended life expectancy over traditional pre-galvanised trunking by presenting greater protection and resistance to corrosion.

Salamandre IP55 rated distribution trunking is ideal for external applications, particularly where cabling could potentially be exposed to splashing liquids and dust ingress. For product longevity, there are outward return flanges for greater strength and neoprene gasketed trunking lids. The trunking has achieved 672 hours of performance in a salt spray test in Legrand laboratories and is also independently tested for resistance to fire to BS EN 50885-1:2005.

The product features pre-punched lids, shake-proof screws and pre-assembled captive bushes for faster fixing of lids and couplers. All the couplers are supplied complete with all required fixings and earth links.
