elcome to the June issue of ECN. I recently had the pleasure of attending the NICEIC & ELECSA Live South event at the picturesque Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, where keynote speaker Roger Atkins, Founder of Electric Vehicles UK, shared some fascinating insight into the future of electric vehicles.

Having first driven an electric vehicle in the 1970s – when he commandeered a milk float – Roger has closely monitored the EV evolution over the years, and started his presentation by revealing that there’s a hefty $300 billion investment in EV on the way. This cash will be used to fund the development of battery technology, motors, inverters, lighter vehicles and a great deal more, and Roger believes that planning for an EV future isn’t just being spoken about – it’s actually happening.

There are currently 206,000 plug-in cars and 8,500 electric vans out there on Britain’s highways, which, at first glance, sounds like a respectable tally.

However, upon hearing that there’s a staggering total of 89 million vehicles across the UK, the EV portion clearly pales in comparison. Roger noted that this is all about to change, however, as fewer

and fewer petrol cars are being made by car manufacturers – and, by 2039, Mercedes will have ceased production of them entirely.

Interestingly – and somewhat ironically – Shell and BP currently have the majority control of public EV charging points, which has led many cynics to believe that they’re only involved to slow down the EV industry. That’s not the case though, as Roger explained: “The likes of Shell and BP know there’s a shift to new energy, and they want to profit from it. But they’ll need electricians – if we can’t plug in, nothing can happen. So it’s you, the electrical contractors, who will power this revolution.”

It’s clear we’re still scratching the surface of this rapidly developing market, and as a result, we’ve devoted a substantial slice of this month’s issue to the topic. It all gets underway on page 32.

This month’s edition of ECN also includes our special Wiring Accessories supplement, which includes profiles of some of the sector’s most innovative players. With the 18th Edition changes and various other regulation changes on the cards, it’s interesting to see how companies are responding, and some of the products and technologies showcased within this supplement are truly impressive – so do take the time to familiarise yourself with each of these companies.

ECA WELCOMES COMMON PRE-QUAL ASSESSMENT Electrotechnical and engineering services body, ECA, has welcomed the new Common Prequalification Assessment Standard (CAS), which has been created by industry representatives brought together by Build UK and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA).

ECA’s Director of CSR, Paul Reeve, Deputy Chairman of the steering group that drew up the CAS, comments, “The CAS aims to standardise supplier pre-qualification questions (PQQs), cutting out the wasted time and cost of multiple prequalification questionnaires. It’s the answer to a very long-standing and expensive problem in construction and beyond, and so we actively support the CAS and encourage buyers and suppliers to engage with it.”

The CAS contains a raft of agreed PQQs that include financial, health and safety, environmental, quality and other topics. During 2019, assessment bodies such as CHAS, Constructionline and Achilles, along with others (which may include trade associations), will be using the CAS to assess contractors’ general capabilities.

Once assessed, suppliers should increasingly find that the CAS is recognised as the industry PQQ standard for construction, and related activity such as maintenance. Furthermore, when data sharing arrangements are in place, suppliers should not need CAS certification from more than one assessment body.

Reeve adds, “We expect the CAS to be of increasing benefit to both buyers and suppliers, and notably members of trade associations, where suppliers may find it easier to complete the CAS question set.”

ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR LEADS THE WAY WITH ISO ACCREDITATION Burton on Trentbased electrical contractor, I. C. Electrical, has been awarded ISO 45001:2018 accreditation, which covers occupational health and safety.

The business, which is one of only a handful in the industry to be awarded this standard, has been working towards the accreditation for a number of years.

ISO 45001 requires businesses to introduce a framework to help improve employee safety and reduce workplace risk. In order to be awarded the standard, applicants must be able to demonstrate that management systems are in place across the business which adequately assess, manage and mitigate against workplace risks.

The new standard was introduced in March 2018, and it replaces a number of older accreditations. For businesses such as I.C. Electrical, which operate on an international scale, being able to demonstrate the achievement is essential when it comes to standing out from the competition during the tender process for large projects.

He began his electrical training in the Royal Navy, where he held various roles as an electrical mechanic on ships and submarines between 1971 and 1978. He finished his time in the Navy as a leading ordnance electrical mechanic and went on to work for Thames Water Utilities before forming his own company, JR Pridham Services in Reading in 1988.

The company now has more than 90 employees.

Pridham comments, “It is a great honour to become ECA President, and I am grateful for the opportunity to champion the electrotechnical and engineering services industry. I look forward to working with ECA’s staff and members, our partners, and Government, to further raise the positive profile of our industry and tackle its biggest challenges, including fair payment, the skills shortage and Brexit uncertainty.”

Pridham takes over the Presidency from Malcolm Crofts of DH Crofts, who has played an important role in championing the industry and the ECA’s role in supporting members to grow their businesses.

TRAINING AWARD FOR J S WRIGHT APPRENTICE An apprentice design engineer with mechanical and electrical services specialist, J S Wright, has won a major award for his outstanding commitment to training.

Danny Buckley, who works from the Birmingham HQ of the 129-year-old company, was presented with the Higher Education Construction award at the annual South and City College’s Sir Doug Ellis Apprenticeship Awards, held at the city’s Macdonald Burlington Hotel.

The 22-year old from Solihull received his trophy in front of 200 guests from the local business community at the ceremony, which celebrated the key role of apprenticeships in the UK’s skills and employment strategies.

Danny completed his BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Building Services Engineering through South & City College, and is now in the first year of his Level 4 HNC course in Building Services Engineering at the Birmingham college.

As well as being supported by his college tutor, Mark Price, Buckley has been a member of the J S Wright Academy since joining the company three years ago. He is also being mentored by design engineer, Tom Hollywood, on J S Wright’s ‘experience’ programme, which helps the company’s technical apprentices fast-track their way up the career ladder.

Mark Price comments, “Danny’s attendance, motivation and work ethic in pursuit of his academic qualifications have been outstanding. Credit must also go to J S Wright for the excellent structure and support of its apprenticeship scheme, which enables its young people to pursue their apprenticeships to the best of their ability.”

MOSS ANNOUNCES EV CHARGING INVESTMENT Moss Electrical has announced investment to introduce a range of electrical vehicle (EV) chargers to the UK market for the ever-growing EV sector. The brand new, fast charging units are ideal for any home, office, school or hotel environment.

In recent years, the UK market for EV cars and charging infrastructure has increased tremendously. Since 2012, there has been a 98% increase in the number of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road, reaching over 130,000 in 2019 – with 12,000 of the vehicles in London alone. The growth in the number of available charge points has risen by 44% since 2012, equating to 15,000 charge points – roughly one for every four electric vehicles.

With the number of electric vehicles rising, it is vital that more charging units are available to the UK market.

SELECT PREPARES FOR 107TH AGM A year of successful campaigning on behalf of Scotland’s professional electricians will be marked at the 107th AGM of Select, the trade body for the electrotechnical industry in the country.

Select’s long-running campaign for Protection of Title for electricians has gained a high profile in the Scottish Parliament over the year, and support has increased from all quarters, including from senior parliamentarians.

2018/19 has also been a successful spell for Select’s training programme, which has seen record numbers of attendees at courses all over the country.

The AGM, taking place in Grangemouth on June 5, will also see the appointment of Kevin Griffin as President of Select, and Donald W Orr as Vice-President.

It will also feature a technical update, presented by Dave Forrester, Head of Technical Services. It will focus on the new Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Dwellings regulations, as an amendment to BS 5839-6 this year brings changes to standards for fire detection and fire alarm systems.

In Scotland, further changes are coming due to the extension of the tolerable standard and updated guidance on the repairing standard that will see the introduction of enhanced fire safety requirements across Scotland’s housing stock.

MOVERS & SHAKERS… EcolightingUK has made some strategic changes to its management structure. Steve Gardner, previously Business Development Director at the company, has been appointed Managing Director, and Martin Needham, the company’s former MD, now becomes Chairman. However, lithium battery recycling research initiatives, including one by the US Energy Department, are now underway.

What of the future?

As prices continue falling and Li-ion becomes more accepted, the chemistry’s penetration of the data centre battery market can be expected to increase. Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecasts a market share increase from 1% in 2016 to 35% in 2025.

However, VRLA will also continue developing and fighting for its market share.

While not mandatory for VRLA, increasing use is being made of battery monitoring and management systems. Kohler Uninterruptible Power’s PowerNSURE, for example, can increase battery life by up to 30%, while also increasing reliability and reducing maintenance costs.

CONTRACT NEWS ZUMTOBEL LIGHTS UP SCHOOL’S ‘LEARNING PLAZA’ Luminaires manufactured by Zumtobel Lighting have been installed as part of a £600,000 makeover project at the Mintlaw Academy secondary school, giving its library a brand-new space known as the ‘learning plaza’.

The luminaires were chosen to enhance the overall appearance of the new state-of-the-art facility, whilst increasing wellbeing and comfort for users, providing a low maintenance, energy efficient solution.

Located in Aberdeenshire, Mintlaw Academy has a capacity for 1,000 students. The new learning plaza includes new study areas for pupils, a library, a resource centre for teachers, and an IT suite.

Zumtobel’s Vaero LED was chosen to cater for the need to adapt the lighting for different visual tasks and individual needs. This LED is a purist direct/indirect pendant luminaire with a clear, minimalist and discreet design that can be successfully integrated into very different areas and almost any room architecture. NO MORE FALSE ALARMS FOR GROVE HOUSING Grove Community Housing Association in Northern Ireland has replaced its smoke alarms with Aico multi-sensors and Ei164e heat alarms in more than 80% of its properties.

Grove Community Housing Association manages 218 properties in North Belfast, which are a mixture of new builds and renovated existing dwellings. With the smoke alarms in these properties coming to the end of their tenyear life, Grove looked into the market for mains powered alarms that are reliable and could reduce false alarms.

Denis Bleakley, Grove Community Housing Association’s General Manager, explains, “We wanted ten-year life rechargeable batteries so that neither tenants nor the Association would be troubled by battery replacement. Being rechargeable also means that if for some reason the electricity supply is off for an extended period, the batteries still do not need to be replaced and the alarms function safely. We liked the multisensor technology to reduce false alarms for us and our tenants, which we found was backed up by Building Research Establishment (BRE) research.”

The multi-sensor fire alarms contain two sensor types – optical and heat – to constantly monitor smoke and heat levels, sending and receiving information via its intelligent detection software for fast response and reduced false alarms. The latter is enhanced through a dust compensation feature.

The Housing Association confirmed that no false alarms have been reported since the installation of the Aico alarms.

RDM BRIGHTENS UP SWANSEA MARKET RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services has been contracted by Swansea Council to undertake the installation of a new lighting system at Swansea Market.

An investment of over £200,000 has been made for the new lighting system, which will see the replacement of the current lighting infrastructure with a modern, more efficient LED system. The new lighting will improve visitors’ shopping experiences, cut energy costs, and make the venue easier to manage.

The project started in mid-April, with the works anticipated to be completed by the start of June. The market will remain open as usual throughout the duration of the project.

The contract adds to the vast portfolio of work undertaken by Llansamlet-based RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services in the city on private developments, as well as its 30-year history of delivering successful projects with local authorities.

CONTRACT NEWS WRIGHT SECURES LONDON HOUSING CONTRACT London property maintenance company, Wright Maintenance, has secured a major service contract with rental housing company, Greystar.

Wright Maintenance, part of M&E building services provider J S Wright, will service MyLo, a collection of 172 Greystar-owned and managed high-specification luxury apartments at three estates in prime London locations: MyLo Nine Elms Point, MyLo Fulham Riverside and MyLo Aldgate.

Wright Maintenance will keep the services for all the apartments in full working order from warranty periods into a pre-planned preventative maintenance regime.

The servicing, to be carried out by highly skilled mobile engineers, will extend across heating, hot water, ventilation and comfort cooling systems.

The lion’s share of the support will be for MyLo Nine Elms Point in Vauxhall, where the company will service heating interface units, underfloor heating, hot water storage cylinders, mechanical ventilation heat recovery, cooling interface units and fan coil units for 118 properties.

The servicing, which has already begun, has been a natural progression for Wright Maintenance as all the systems were originally installed by J S Wright.

WESTON PARK HOSPITAL CONTRACT FOR BES BES, a specialist in sophisticated healthcare, pharmaceutical and cleanroom facilities, has been awarded a £1.75 million design and build contract for a new pharmacy and aseptic suite for chemotherapy and clinical trial/emerging therapy at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield.

The company will take on the role of principal designer and principal contractor for the venture.

BES was awarded the project following a detailed NHS procurement process, with the company’s bid scoring high on both cost and quality, including price, project delivery, and health and safety criteria.

The company has already helped the Trust to identify value engineering opportunities appropriate to the classification of each area, with modifications to the HVAC and finishes that will reduce build costs, operational costs and the unit’s carbon footprint.

Together with new offices and change areas, the new facility will contain four isolator suites. The isolator suites and their associated change rooms will be designed to comply with EU GMP Grade C. One isolator will be an Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP) isolator. It will provide an EU GMP Grade A environment within the main chamber of the isolator. New air handling units to serve the new facility will be designed to comply with the requirements of HTM 03-01. The chemotherapy suite and clinical trials areas will each have their own dedicated unit.

Maintaining business as usual within a fullyoperational hospital without any interruptions is a critical success factor for this project, which is scheduled for completion in May 2020.

NEW CABLING INFRASTRUCTURE FOR COVENTRY LIBRARY Multi-compartment trunking from cable management specialist, Unitrunk, is being used to provide the new data and electrical cabling infrastructure for an upgrade to the library at Coventry University.

Designed by Birmingham-based practice, Associated Architects, the £2.1 million library upgrade includes a new entrance, reception and café for the library, along with refurbishment of some of the study areas. To enable the library to remain open for use throughout the project, the electrical installation will be delivered in two phases, with the new build elements due to complete in June and the phase II refurbishment programme due for handover in August.

Unitrunk’s trunking has been used in two sizes to connect all electrical, LV and data services from the existing risers in the newly constructed and refurbished areas. All the trunking is being installed in the ceiling void, and power and lighting cables will be installed in one compartment, while the other compartment will be used to contain data, fire alarm and LV cabling.

The electrical installation is being carried out by Whittaker Brothers, which is working closely with the university and the other delivery partners on the project to manage the challenges of an occupied building and temporary access, particularly during the busy exam season as Phase I nears completion.

TRAINING NEW TRAINING FACILITY FOR SCHNEIDER Schneider Electric has opened a new, purpose-built, 660 square metre Safety Academy at its UK headquarters in Telford. The two-storey facility will enable the company to increase both the number of health and safety training courses it runs, as well as the number of training places available on each course by up to 40%.

Courses at the facility will be available to both Schneider Electric customers and partners. In addition, all of Schneider’s UK employees will now receive health and safety training at the facility. Last year, Schneider Electric trained thousands of delegates on the safe operation of low, medium and high voltage electrical products, including staff, customers and partners.

For the last five years, Schneider Electric has been running courses from its training facility in Coventry. The popularity and demand for its specialist courses led to the decision to invest in a new facility to increase the quality and capacity of the training on offer.

POPULARITY BOOM FOR SELECT COURSES The dedicated training department launched last year by Select, Scotland’s largest trade association, is experiencing a significant rise in demand. Driven by changes to BS 7671, the department has run as many courses in the first quarter of 2019 as it did in the whole of 2018.

In the first three months of 2019, Select ran 68 BS 7671 courses all over the country, involving over 800 delegates.

It is planning at least another 40 courses for the second quarter, which will bring the new regulations to another 600 electrical professionals.

Jenny Cryans, who runs the new training department, says, “The demand from our members has been exceptional, and the courses that we have been running have attracted very positive feedback. The changes in the regulations have been a major factor in the increase in demand, but we are heavily involved in other courses as well.”

As well as the popular BS 7671 courses, the department is introducing a range of short courses, in collaboration with New College Lanarkshire, to cover aspects of fire and security.

It is also working in partnership with Training Plus to deliver courses in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Training Plus specialises in core health and safety elements, such as Emergency First Aid at Work and Manual Handling. Future subjects will include Working at Height and Asbestos Awareness.

Cryans continues, “Changes in technology are also driving demand in areas such as EV charging, smart controls, energy storage systems and energy efficiency in general.”

Select’s training team has also just launched The Electrical Site Safety Assessment, a new SQA-accredited course, in conjunction with the Scottish Joint Industry Board, which is aimed at non-technical staff who work at construction sites.

THE HEAT IS ON FOR GLOBAL WARMING TARGET The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) – the official adviser to UK Government – has published a new report, Net Zero, that seeks to reassess the UK’s emissions targets. ECN details the key findings, and looks at how the industry has reacted.

T

itled Net Zero – The UK’s contribution to stopping global warming, the latest report from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) responds to a request from the Governments of the UK, Wales and Scotland, that asked the CCC to reassess the UK’s long-term emissions targets.

The CCC’s new emissions scenarios draw on ten new research projects, three expert advisory groups, and reviews of the work of the IPCC and others.

The report’s key findings are as follows: •T he CCC recommends a new emissions target for the UK: net-zero greenhouse gases by 2050.

• I n Scotland, it recommends a net-zero date of 2045, reflecting Scotland’s greater relative capacity to remove emissions than the UK as a whole.

• I n Wales, the CCC recommends a 95% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050.

A net-zero GHG target for 2050 will deliver on the commitment that the UK made by signing the Paris Agreement. The CCC says that it is achievable with known technologies, alongside improvements in people’s lives, and within the expected economic cost that Parliament accepted when it legislated the existing 2050 target for an 80% reduction from 1990.

However, this is only possible if clear, stable and well-designed policies to reduce emissions further are introduced across the economy without delay. Current policy is insufficient for even the existing targets.

The ECA’s response The ECA welcomed the Net Zero report, agreeing with some of the main recommendations which advise that Government take actions to reach net-zero UK carbon emissions by 2050.

Luke Osborne, ECA Energy & Emerging Technologies Solutions Advisor, says, “As well as following some of the key recommendations of the report, the Government should also work to implement the recent findings of the Green Finance task force, particularly regarding driving up demand and supply for green mortgage products and green lending.

“More widely, however, the government now needs to adopt a very clear pathway, with milestones, to meet the 2050 target.

In doing so, it will show a more activist approach in providing funding and regulation where both might be needed.”

ECA’s view is that robust, long term policies are necessary to give financial investors confidence, and also to give confidence to a large number of businesses and facilitators who could help achieve these targets.

Osborne adds, “Many SMEs are currently able to deliver energy efficiency measures, but could be reluctant to invest after previous changes in Government policy, such as the Green Deal and the Feed-in-Tariff.”

ECA has also called for stronger investment in skills and education training to meet the increasing demand for competent electrotechnical installers.

The HPA weighs in The Heat Pump Association (HPA), a leading authority on the use and benefits of heat pump technology, has also welcomed the report.

The HPA agrees with the Committee that reaching this target is feasible with already available technologies, such as heat pumps, which are vital in the decarbonisation of UK heating systems.

Crucially, the report highlights the need for the Government to act immediately to implement a clear regulatory framework to achieve the decarbonisation of heat and recommends a range of policies to do so.

The policy recommendations of the report include support for low carbon heating, a review of the balance of tax and regulatory costs across fuels, and a nationwide training programme to upskill the existing workforce.

The HPA is pleased to see these recommendations as a means of reflecting the benefits of low carbon technologies, and aims to work with all stakeholders to develop effective policy; starting with the upcoming Part L Review and consultation on the regulatory framework for the future of heat to phase out high carbon fossil fuels.

Graham Wright, HPA Chairman, comments, “The HPA wholeheartedly supports the report’s recognition that urgent action is required to meet a netzero target and welcomes the specific recommendations for decarbonising heat within the publication.

“Momentum is now gathering among the public, acknowledging the need to change the way we heat our buildings.

As highlighted in the report, known technologies, such as heat pumps, offer a clear solution for this.

“Heat pumps offer an extensive opportunity to reduce the UK’s emissions, as well as helping to address other policy issues such as fuel poverty and air quality.

The Future Homes standard is set to be introduced in 2025, and supported within this report, represents the ‘low-hanging fruit’ of heating in new builds; which, in addition to those properties off the gas grid, should be the immediate focus for the Government.”

EQUIPPED FOR SAFETY A look at how Martindale and Baxi Heating are working together to comply with the latest Gas Safe Register guidance.

M

artindale Electric, a manufacturer of electrical test equipment, has supplied Baxi Heating with testers for checking appliance wiring and earthing, together with locking off devices, to ensure circuits can be safely isolated before carrying out any work.

The tools keep Baxi’s gas service engineers safe when installing and servicing heating equipment, and are essential for achieving compliance with the latest Gas Safe Register guidance TB118 2018.

The changes mean new test procedures are now required to keep service engineers safe from electrical hazards. In addition to carrying out safe isolation procedures to prove that circuits are dead and locked off, the new guidance now requires verification of mains earthing.

Founded in 1866, Baxi Heating is a part of BDR Thermea, one of Europe’s largest manufacturers and distributors of domestic and commercial water and space heating systems. As an industry leader with more than 6,400 service engineers worldwide, Baxi Heating is at the forefront of improving gas service and installation engineers’ safety in the field, in accordance with the latest changes to TB118.

Engineers have also been supplied with a range of equipment to securely lock off circuits, such as: the LOKFS1 universal fused spur locking off device, which offers a simple solution for safely isolating fixed wired appliances including cookers, boilers, hand dryers and water heaters; and the slim line LOK7, which is suitable for locking off MCBs, where there is restricted access. Locking off circuits and proving dead before carrying out work on electrical equipment and systems is a requirement of the Electricity at Work Regulations HSG85 and TB118 to ensure the safety of workers on site.

After researching the market, Baxi Heating provided 250 of its trainers and engineers with a range of Martindale Electric equipment, which includes the EZ650 earth loop and polarity checker for socket and spur testing.

The EZ650 simplifies the process for identifying a satisfactory earth by combining a basic socket tester with an earth loop check that uses clear red / green LEDs, making it easy to interpret the results and see whether the earth loop value is within acceptable limits. The EZ650 socket and loop tester can be used on both 13A sockets and fused spurs to quickly identify a hazardous earth before starting work. This approach offers a simple solution to complying with TB118.

An effective mains earth is essential for appliances with earthed enclosures. Basic socket testers will not check the quality of the earth; to do this, an earth loop impedance test is required. For this reason, the latest edition of TB118 now specifies that an earth loop impedance test should be carried out. The updated document reflects the requirements of HSE HSG85 Electricity at Work Regulations and HSE Engineering Information Sheet No 35 concerning the service and repair of domestic appliances.

A low earth loop impedance measurement is important to ensure that fuses and miniature circuit breakers achieve a fast disconnection time to avoid electrocution. This approach of using an advanced socket tester offers a simple solution to complying with TB118 and is common among service organisations, particularly those installing and maintaining domestic appliances.

In order to make testing more convenient, Baxi Heating engineers are also equipped with Martindale’s all-in-one ET5 electrical tester with fused test leads, in accordance with G38. This will enable them to safely measure AC/DC current without breaking into the circuit and carry out voltage and continuity testing. Other features of the ET5 include temperature and capacitance measurement, together with non-contact voltage detection.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY Mark Flanagan, Technical Manager at Scolmore Group, talks about fire-rated downlights, why fire rating is required, and the importance of ensuring products are tested to the highest standards to guarantee they are reliable and safe.

I

n the light of the Grenfell tragedy, the spotlight has been shone on fire safety, with the result that building regulations are becoming much more stringent, and building products are coming under more scrutiny. As the first manufacturer to launch fire-rated downlights back in 2005 – with our award-wining FlameGuard fire protected and acoustic rated products – we have had years of experience in developing, modifying and improving our range of products to ensure they meet the latest requirements.

Why is fire rating required?

A standard house in the UK usually has two floors, and where there is living space above, the wooden floor construction with plasterboard ceiling must pass stringent fire tests. In these properties, the complete floor/ceiling construction between the two floors must withstand a minimum of 30 minutes of fire to: 1) prevent rapid fire spread, which could entrap occupants of the building; and 2) to reduce the chance of fires becoming large, on the basis that large fires are more dangerous – not only to occupants, fire and rescue service personnel – but also to people in the vicinity of the building. Where there is no living space above (loft space, for example), no fire rating is required. However, we would still recommend fire-rated downlights in the event this area should be converted to a living space at a later date.

The more floors in a building, the longer the fire protection/compartmentation has to last. In a three-story building with the loft converted to a bedroom, the floor constructions must comply with a 60-minute fire rating to give enough time for the occupants to evacuate in the event of a fire.

Downlights and fire rating The floors and ceilings will have passed fire testing as a complete floor, but once an aperture for a downlight is made, the fire barrier is broken. A standard open back downlight allows the fire, vapours and heat to penetrate the floor space, and can lead to collapse before the required times of 30, 60 or 90 minutes.

A fire-rated downlight uses a sealed steel body, together with an exterior intumescent strip around the unit. In the case of a fire, these elements separate the room from the ceiling void, preventing the spread of fire. The intumescent material helps stop the fire, heat and vapours from spreading into the void.

Downlights and fire testing Our testing is carried out to strict BS standards, and there are a number of building regulations that cover the testing of downlights:

• BS EN 1363-1: 2012 – Fire resistance tests. General requirements.

All our fire tests are carried out by independent testing specialist, BRE (Building Research Establishment).

BRE Global is a UKAS accredited testing laboratory, that can comprehensively test, predict and assess the fire performance of products and materials to British, European, marine and international firetest standards.

BRE tests our fire-rated downlights under real world conditions. This starts with the construction of the floor to fit the furnace (approximately 4.5m x 3.5m), whilst following the material manufacturer’s construction guidelines for the fire rating required. The joists, floor board and plasterboard are assembled, with the apertures then cut and the downlights fitted. The downlights have to be spaced at recommended distances to give an account of real-life installations in a worst-case scenario.

Once constructed, weights are added to the floor to simulate the weight of furniture, etc. The floor is lifted into place on the furnace, with the heat thermocouples added to the required elements. The furnace is heated by gas burners, to over 1,000°C, and the furnace temperature is regulated and monitored during the testing. The temperature during the test can exceed 1,000°C. If more than one layer of plasterboard is fitted (e.g. the 90-minute fire test), the first layer can fall without being deemed a failure. The main contribution to an early failure is a hot joint on the floorboards. This is mainly due to vapours and heat build-up within the floor void exceeding 300°C, where ignition is only required. The test can stop in the event of earlier failure – whether the required time has elapsed or until the floor construction collapses.

THE SPARK THAT IGNITED A 30-YEAR JOURNEY Clare Ward, Managing Director of Clare PR – a PR agency that has specialised in raising the profile of companies in the electrical sector for 30 years – discusses how things have changed over those three decades, and explains why the core principles remain the same.

W

hen I first set up in business in June 1989, the internet was in its infancy, no-one had email, and social media wasn’t even a twinkle in the eye of Mark Zuckerberg. Indeed, he was still in kindergarten.

News didn’t break minute-by-minute, and there were no instant updates on the mobile device in your back pocket; we relied on the monthly arrival of magazines like ECN to update us on what was happening in the electrical sector. Then, as now, it did a fine job.

There has been plenty of change since 1989, with an excellent online presence to support the printed magazine and busy

social media accounts. That’s why as an agency, we still regularly work with ECN, just like we did 30 years ago, when I placed our first ever article with the magazine.

It’s strange to think that many of the electrical sector professionals reading this now may not even have been born when I first picked up the telephone to the editor of ECN to ‘sell in’ that first story. And the electrical sector has changed just as much as the PR industry over the course of those three decades.

Wired in Perhaps one of the most notable stories about how times have changed in the industry since Clare PR first started working for electrical clients is one of the very first campaigns we ever delivered for Volex Pencon. There has been lots of

consolidation in the marketplace since then, with some of the brands that were familiar in the 1980s being absorbed into other manufacturers, but Volex was one of the biggest names in the electrical industry at the time, and our brief from the company was to help them sell more moulded plugs.

It will seem crazy to any Millennials reading this, but there was a time when any new toaster, hairdryer or iron you bought from a UK shop would arrive in its box without a plug attached to the end of the wire. Many of us remember having to purchase a plug and attach it ourselves, however, which was both an inconvenience and a safety hazard, because not all consumers had the knowledge to wire a plug correctly.

For Clare PR, it also seemed like a golden opportunity to make Volex the go-to brand for plugs; not by offering them as a

standalone product for people to buy and wire to their small appliance, but by leading a political lobbying campaign to make it mandatory for appliances to be sold with a plug pre-wired.

The campaign received national coverage, political debate and huge public support. Our press coverage extended to full page articles in the Daily Mirror and Mail on Sunday, to name but two. Once it was successful in making a pre-wired plug a standard requirement, it also opened up a whole new market for volume sales for our client, achieving our original objective.

That approach to planning, delivering and evaluating activity formed the blueprint of Clare PR’s campaign, and has become the tried and tested formula we’ve used ever since.

Variety Consolidation has been one of the ongoing themes of the marketplace over the past three decades, with one of our other early electrical clients, Mita, becoming part of Schneider; and our work for Cablofil, Ortronics and Electrak evolving into a much bigger brief for Legrand as a result of their acquisition.

Throughout all the changes, we have been able to use our knowledge and understanding of the sector to add value to the marketing activities of all kinds of electrical sector clients. For example, we now use our knowledge of the cable management sector to drive PR and social media activity for Unitrunk and Vantrunk, and knowledge of the electrical wholesale landscape gained from working with suppliers like GreenBrook has helped us develop effective PR strategies for current clients in a similar market segment, such as Niglon.

One of the other key areas we have seen change over the years has been safety. In addition to a stricter approach to proper use of PPE and equipment on site, we’ve also seen regular updates to the wiring regulations, which have provided opportunities for comment-led articles and discussion topics.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL Michael Morrison, Managing Director of Light Efficient Design UK, provides insight into the latest LED retrofit lighting developments and looks at the opportunities for electrical contractors.

W

hile the cost of LEDs and fittings is gradually falling as market demand grows, it can still be cost-prohibitive for many buildings premises and estates in the public and private sectors to make a total switch to LED fittings. Furthermore, as user appetite for LED grows, re-lamping strategies must be cost-effective and future-proof, as – over time – even the most reliable LED technology will require updating. This is despite a lifetime of 50,000 hours allowing (in some cases) eight to 12 years between re-lamping.

This poses a problem when installing complete LED fittings, as there is limited possibility of making simple future upgrades. This is where the LED HID retrofit lamping approach comes in.

After the initial payback period (normally between 12 to 15 months), LED retrofit lamps can easily be replaced with a more efficient version of the same lamp.

For example, there are lamps that were 150W, producing 12,000 lumens over two years ago; and now, thanks to improvements in LED efficacy, that same lamp offers 19,250 lumens.

With continuing advancements in high quality retrofit products, lighting contractors and installers have the flexibility to phase in the cost of conversion to LED as part of planned and budgeted maintenance schedules; while still being able to take advantage of LED technology advancements in the future.

Design and manufacturing advancements The growing availability of certified, warranted high quality product is allowing the retrofit approach to become much more viable, and for an increasingly diverse range of applications and environments; from low bays and high bays for factory, warehouse, retail mall, hotel and office spaces, to post tops, bollards and wall packs for exterior floodlighting and walkways.

One or two quality manufacturers have also adopted new production techniques to further enhance the performance of their retrofit solutions. The use of a conformal coating, for example, is increasingly found in PCB production where a thin layer of polymer is applied to the surface of the PCB and LEDs to electrically insulate the circuit from environment stresses. Condensation, dust, chemicals and shock can all adversely affect long term reliability and light quality.

Furthermore, the anti-corrosive properties of the polymer extend circuit life.

Thermal management innovation Correct thermal management of LEDs and drivers remains a challenge for some manufacturers and importers, but is absolutely essential for ensuring the 50,000 hour promised lifetime. LEDs and drivers running above their maximum design temperature will not last long.

To address this issue, there has been a growing trend towards the use of cooling fans and thermal feedback to monitor and control the LED temperature. Light Efficient Design was the first to design-in a long-life cooling fan as an integral part of its LED retrofit lamp. These are designed to operate in enclosed fitting environments, and the 70,000 hour life of the fan far exceeds the expected LED lifetimes of 50,000 hours.

Light output optimisation Until recently, attempting to maximise lumens for actual light output has been problematical for contractors and installers. This is because most high bay, post top, low bay and floodlight reflectors

Retrofit LED checklist • Look for established manufacturers that can offer a full line of fully CE/ROHS tested LED HID retrofits with guaranteed lifetimes. There are many spurious lumen claims made by cheaper alternatives that offer only two or three-year warranties.

• Consider the intended application and environmental factors – there may be potential thermal management considerations.

• Ensure correct installation – always bypass the ballast.

• Specify suppressors to protect against surges and spikes in cases of poor power supply quality.

• Check the colour temperature and CRI of the lamp. Unacceptably high colour temperatures are often offered, as that shows higher lumen outputs.

are designed for a HID lamp, and not a standard LED corn lamp. However, there is now an increasing choice of retrofit LED designs from manufacturers, which are purpose-made for retrofitting into low bay, floodlights, and high bay fittings. Light Efficient Design’s range, for example, can deliver up to three times the illuminance when compared to a standard corn lamp.

Solar power Clearly, there is a growing demand from end user customers for more energy efficient products, and while LED lighting offers far superior energy and emissions performance compared to older technologies, there is always room for further innovation. Light Efficient Design, for example, is launching this year an allin-one solar-powered solution where the solar panel and battery are built directly into the LED fixture. There is no need for trenching or wiring, as the fixture does not connect to any power feed.

Designed for use in such applications as outdoor car parks, transit shelters and bus stops, the fixture turns on at night automatically, and can be set to either stay at 100% light output, or dim down if there is no motion in order to extend battery life.

The long-life battery lasts three nights with a one day charge, and lasts at least 2,000 charge cycles.

ith PHEV yearon-year sales up nearly 25%, and overall EV sales up more than 20%, it is clear motorists are increasingly turning to electric vehicles – a sharp contrast to huge decreases in diesel vehicle sales.

The UK Government has pledged that by 2030, at least half of all new car sales, and up to 40% of new van sales, will be PHEV

or EV by 2030. This is all part of its ‘Road to Zero’ strategy.

By 2040, it plans to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, and by 2050, it wants almost every car on the road to be zero emissions.

The migration to electric vehicles is a global phenomenon, with a recent report issued by the International Energy Agency stating that the number of EVs on the world’s roads is likely to reach 13 million in the near future; with sales also expected to soar 24% every year, on average, through to 2030.

An exciting opportunity for the electrical industry This exciting news for the EV industry has also had significant beneficial opportunities for the electrical industry, with a recent survey confirming that the UK needs to increase its EV charging network six-fold by 2020 to cope with the amount of EVs due to hit the nation’s roads.

KEEPING IT COOL WITH AIR AND WATER RESISTORS The International Energy Agency aims to have 220 million electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by 2030. Fuelled by battery power, overheating in EVs must be avoided to ensure reliable and efficient operation. Steve Hughes, Managing Director of REO UK, explains the difference between air and water cooling braking resistors.

T

he effect of temperature on a product’s performance has always been an important design consideration, as overheating can reduce efficiency and the lifespan of components. So, whether a product is subjected to environmental heating or cooling, or if it generates

its own rise or drop in temperature, managing temperature is critical.

At REO UK, many of our customers are in the marine, renewable and railway sectors, and all of these must operate in extreme environmental conditions where standard electrical items are not always fit for purpose. From our experience, many of the challenges components face in these sectors, like temperature, are also applicable to automotive manufacturers.

Make the right choice in the design process Most manufacturers understand the importance of effectively addressing and understanding heat transfer considerations early in the design process, saving time and minimising prototyping costs.

Despite this, many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are unsure how to choose between the two main ways

Water-cooled resistors can be easily integrated into the existing cooling systems of EV vehicles, and can deliver cooling in areas where fans often fall short

of regulating device temperature: aircooling and water-cooling.

Braking resistors are used to dissipate heat and slow down a mechanical system to avoid overheating. They have relatively low ohmic values, a high-power rating and are typically encased in a frame to create a safe distance between surrounding components. To increase its dissipation capability, the resistor’s frames feature cooling fans or liquid coolants.

“REO’s braking resistor works by converting excess electricity that is not needed for recharging the EV’s battery into heat that can be dissipated safely.”

SPECIAL FEATURE

Air-cooling limitations Traditionally, air-cooling has been most commonly used as it is relatively inexpensive and requires little maintenance, other than the replacement of filters. This is because the fan technology is robust and able to undertake some degree of damage without impacting performance significantly. For example, if a single fin broke on the fan, it would remain functional and safe to use.

Air-cooling, however, does come with its limitations. Firstly, the integration of a fan means that the enclosures of the device generally must be bulkier to accommodate it. This means that air-cooling cannot be used in applications where space is limited.

Air fans also create an additional source of noise, unlike water-cooling alternatives such as REO’s braking resistor, D 330. Suitable for integration in EVs, the resistor works by converting excess electricity that is not needed for recharging the EV’s battery into heat that can be dissipated safely, or as energy that can be regenerated into the vehicle’s power supply.

This is an effective use of energy that would otherwise simply be lost. It also reduces the need for resistance heating using the battery’s energy, which can reduce the vehicle’s driving range.

Water-cooling advantages The benefit of using a water-cooling resistor in an application like this, is that they can be easily integrated into the existing cooling systems of the vehicle and are able to deliver cooling in areas where fans often fall short.

Water-based systems operate on a very simple principle of heat exchange, whereby pipes containing a liquid coolant circulate around an enclosure and out of the device to keep components cool. The excess

heat generated during use is thermally conducted by the water in the pipes, which can then be transferred out of the device and regenerated for other processes.

With EVs, automotive manufacturers aim to make driving as energy efficient as possible. Not only are fans in aircooling systems limited by their reliance on ambient temperatures to cool down overheating components, but – depending on the size of the application – OEMs may need to integrate multiple fans, as opposed to just one.

In comparison, water has a high heat conductivity and only requires a single pump to cool infrastructure, significantly lowering the overall energy consumption and cost of the cooling system.

Further considerations Another advantage is that coolant can be stored in the pipes below the application’s ambient level for even faster cooling.

Water cooling is the only method that permits cooling below the ambient air temperature, and is ideally suited to industrial applications.

In addition to maximising efficiency, resistors like our REOHM series D 330 make an additional space saving of up to 88%. The use of a water-cooling system allows optimal temperature characteristics to be achieved, while the performance of the component is improved.

The adoption of electric vehicles is only set to increase in the coming years, and automotive manufacturers must be able to select the right components (like resistors) and technologies for their design. By considering the factors that affect equipment performance, engineers and OEMs can ensure they make the right choice between air-cooling and watercooling every time.

The results showed that vans can harbour a wide variety of germs – posing serious health risks – and that an electrician’s van may be dirtier than a toilet door handle.

A

tradesperson’s van often acts as their second home, with many drivers either spending much of their time on the road or taking breaks behind the wheel. However, while many people wouldn’t dream of leaving their home uncleaned, a new investigation has

revealed just how dirty a tradesperson’s van can get.

Confused.com partnered with the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Essex to investigate the different types of germs living in six trade vans belonging to: electricians, builders, carpenters, dog groomers, bricklayers and plumbers.

The results showed that vans can harbour a wide variety of germs, some of which can be a serious threat to the health

of their drivers, in extreme cases.

In particular, the van belonging to the bricklayer was found to contain the most pathogens – a type of microorganism that can cause disease. Here, pathogen levels were more than double those usually found on toilet door handles.

The most prominent germs found in this van are known to cause skin infections and acne, with traces of bacteria relating to respiratory infections.

In a survey by Confused.com, nearly 8% of van drivers admit they’ll only clean inside their van when it starts to smell

Vans ranked in order of dirtiness, including the tested toilet door handle: 1. Bricklayer 2. Builder 3. Electrician 4. Dog groomer 5. Carpenter 6. Plumber 7. Toilet door handle The investigation found that most ‘touch’ points in all the vans tested were riddled with pathogens. And the handbrake was the most germ-ridden area of all – something van drivers must use at least a couple of times in one journey, which may put them at risk of catching some infections or illnesses.

The most common bacteria found on the handbrake was Staphylococcus aureus. This is often found in the upper respiratory tract or on the skin and may cause a staph infection. While most staph infections can be treated with antibiotics, the bacteria can occasionally cause more serious infections, like toxic shock syndrome or impetigo (a contagious skin infection that can cause sores and blisters). Worryingly, some strains of this type of pathogen can also exhibit antimicrobial resistance, specifically MRSA – a strain of bacteria that’s resistant to several types of antibiotics.

Staphylococcus aureus was just one of many germs lurking in the tested vans.

In fact, pathogens which could lead to pneumonia and endocarditis were also present on some touch points – both of which could lead to serious illness, in extreme cases.

Knowing when a surface is covered in germs is impossible to see by eye, but common sense says cleaning a van or car regularly can eliminate the chances of bacteria thriving. However, it appears there is some confusion around how often van drivers should be cleaning their vehicles.

According to a survey of 500 van drivers, conducted by Confused.com, nearly one in 10 (8%) admit they’ll only clean the inside of their van when it starts to smell. And only one in three (29%) will empty rubbish from their van daily. One in seven (14%) admit to never cleaning their van at all.

Quite disturbingly, more than half (55%) admitted to eating food in their van, then leaving the half-eaten food in place for as long as three days, giving germs the perfect opportunity to grow. More than one in seven (15%) claim to leave used tissues in their van frequently. And only one in seven (14%) will wipe the surface immediately if they sneeze.

It’s no wonder that some nasty germs are lurking in vans, but with better education on how to keep a van clean, van drivers will be at far less risk of contracting a bacteria-based illness. With this in mind, Confused.com has compiled a range of top tips on deep cleaning a van to make it clearer for van drivers wanting to keep germs at bay – especially if cleaning isn’t their strong-point.

rubbish starts to pile up. To point time-poor tradespeople and other drivers in the right direction, we’ve compiled our top tips to deep cleaning a van and keeping the deadly diseases at bay.”

Top tips for cleanliness Start with the wheels. Depending on how muddy your van is, it may need an initial hose down. Clean the wheels before the rest of the body, as you don’t want to get muck from them onto already cleaned paintwork. Hose them down, and hose the wheel arches and underside while you’re at it.

De-grit the surface. Cars and vans pick up ‘traffic film’, a layer of dirt and oil that’s difficult to remove. However, traffic film remover (TFR) should loosen this up without damaging the paintwork or mechanical parts of the van. It’ll also get rid of most of the grit, which’ll help prevent scratching the van when you shampoo it later.

Wash, rinse, dry, wax. Now for the shampoo. Fill two buckets with warm water – one for cleaning, the other for rinsing.

Shampoo the van top down. It’s better to use a wash mitt than sponges or chamois, as it’s easier to scratch the paintwork with the latter. Avoid getting the mitt gritty by using the rinse bucket before going back to the wash bucket for suds. Likewise, be sure to rinse it thoroughly if you drop it on the floor.

When you’re done with the suds, give it another rinse with a cold hose. Dry the van thoroughly with a towel, as leaving it to air dry can leave uneven patches. Now it’s time to wax, panel by panel. Apply in small areas with one microfibre cloth, and remove with another.

Start with the mats. Empty the van of everything – including the floor mats, and anything in the glove box, footwells, or door pockets. Wash the floor mats first, as they’ll need time to dry. Give them a good shake, and then scrub them with interior cleaner and hose them down if they’re rubber mats. If you have carpet mats, spray with stain remover like Vanish, then put them in the washing machine and give them a short cycle at 40°C. In either case, hang them up to dry when done.

Get into the nitty gritty. Give the van a preliminary brush and vacuum to get rid of the majority of dust and dirt, and sweep the floor in the back. Dust the cab before using interior cleaner, and then use interior cleaner for the vinyl, dashboard and other compartments in the cab. Use a toothbrush to really get into the detail of textured vinyl.

When it’s all done, squirt with air freshener. Then admire your handiwork and that fresh van smell.

ELIMINATING THE RISKS IN EV CHARGING Chaz Andrews, Technical Manager at Doepke UK, analyses the different types of EV charging modes, and talks us through the health and safety and risk assessment considerations that have to be factored in.

C

ompanies providing facilities at any premises for employees and/or visitors to plug in their own electrical appliances are required by law to manage any direct or indirect hazards related to the use of that equipment. A suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks also applies to the charging of EVs on site.

Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) reports the number of fatalities at work due to contact with an electrical supply (workers and member of the public), as circa 32 deaths between 2014 and 2018.

The number of electrical accidents is harder to pin down, but HSE information suggests it could be in the region of 1,000 or more per year. The HSE highlights the increased risks associated with using damaged electrical equipment outside (electrocution hazard), particularly in relation to portable and flexible leads, plugs and sockets.

Mode 2 charging These cables were originally designed to provide a safer method for opportunistic charging, when connecting directly to a standard domestic socket. Extension leads rolled out on pavements and drives overnight and the safety aspects of connecting to 13A ring main, without the appropriate RCD protection, still pose a high risk to the user and other persons who may come into contact with faulty or damaged electrical equipment. The fire hazards associated with overheating of sockets and extension cables are well documented.

THE FUTURE OF EV CHARGING AT HOME

Mode 2 charging cables are portable devices, for use outside. Providing facilities for this method of charging at a place of work, business or public building, raises complex safety issues. Duty holders are responsible for managing the risks associated with portable appliance use on site, either by an employee or a visitor.

It should be noted that the OLEV’s minimum technical specifications covering EVHS and WCS do not recognise Mode 1 or 2 as compliant methods of charging.

With a dedicated charging infrastructure, Mode 3 charging should be the safest method, Chaz Andrews says

RCDs associated with Mode 2 charging From January 2018, IC-CPDs manufactured to IEC 62752:2016 used in Mode 2 charging cables had to include the facility to detect DC residual currents and disconnect if greater than 6mA DC (i.e. mitigate the risk of DC fault currents associated with EV battery charging and upstream Type A RCDs). That is, RCD blinding and loss of 30mA protection for the circuit, that may be feeding other appliances.

The IC-CPD 30mA detection function does not provide electrical isolation.

This is only achieved by unplugging the charging cable. For example, to meet Regulation 722.531, there must be a separate RCD within the circuit. Using a dedicated 13A socket /circuit limits risks to that area of the installation.

The DFS4 AEV RCD includes 6mA DC detection and 30mA Type A protection

This issue is addressed in the context of the 18th Edition; “protective measures against DC fault current shall be taken, except where provided by the EV charging equipment” i.e. if the IC-CPD does not provide the required measures, the Regulations specify Type B RCDs or Type A + disconnection of the supply in case of DC fault currents if >6mA. The Doepke Type A EV RCD provides this combined functionality.

Mode 3 charging In theory, this method of charging should be the safest; using a dedicated charging infrastructure, robust plugs and simple cable connection between the EV and the charge point. The revised standards, regulations and codes of practice give clear guidance on design requirements to achieve safe and reliable performance over a number of years. The facility for tethered cables simplifies the health and safety management process, as opposed to portable cables, which could be damaged prior to use on site.

IEC 61851-1:2017 included the requirement for specific protective measures to be taken against DC fault currents, without exception (i.e. 6mA DC detection and disconnection of the supply to be included in the charge point when associated with a 30mA Type A RCD; or by external means, such as Type B RCD or Type A plus 6mA DC detection and disconnection technology).

This revised safety requirement is reflected in 722.531.2.101 (18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations) and the revised Code of Practice for EV charging installations 3rd Edition.

Meeting the above is relatively straightforward, for an installation supplying one Mode 3 charge point (see figure 1). The considerations relate directly to the EV that will be connected to the charge point and the EV manufacturer’s requirements for charging. For example, to meet the 18th Edition requirements, Tesla specifies the use of DFS4 AEV with its Mode 3 charge points and its vehicles. The DFS4 AEV RCD includes 6mA DC detection and 30mA Type A protection.

The 6mA DC fault current detection feature built into EV charge points is not

classed as a protection function. A separate 30mA RCD is required to disconnect and isolate the circuit under fault conditions; see RCD requirements detailed at the end of 722.531.2.101. Single charge points incorporating an RCD may require an additional Type A RCD at the origin of the charge point supply e.g. Regulation 411.3.2 and 522.6.202. Note that charge points must not be connected into circuits containing Type AC RCDs upstream.

Installation designs supplying two or more Mode 3 charge points (see figure 2), must take account of the combined effects of leakage currents when charging multiple vehicles. Refer to the Code of Practice for EV charging equipment installations 3rd Edition clause 8.5.3: Type B RCDs must be used where the DC component of the residual current could exceed 6mA.

Documented inspection and testing Keeping records on site helps to demonstrate the effective management of health and safety policy, and provides duty holders with a recognised method of monitoring and reviewing safety compliance. In the absence of any specific guidance for EV charging installations, refer to the IET CoP 4th Edition for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

Duty holders are required to control and reduce risks to prevent danger as far as is reasonably practicable (SFAIRP) and as low as is reasonably practicable (ALARP).

Inspection, necessary testing and the period between these activities should reflect the actual conditions of a specific installation based on the risk assessment for that site.

The environmental conditions, location (site access), amount of use and possible vandalism, may lead to an increased risk associated with the EV charge point and any associated charging cables. For example, if the site is accessible 24 hours a day, it may be considered reasonable (on the basis that the cost to implement is low) to carry out a visual inspection of EV charging infrastructure on a daily basis, or as deemed necessary by the duty holder.

More detailed checks and tests should be completed on a regular basis. Refer to the EV charge point instructions, the EV manufacturer, and the advice given in regulations for higher risk environments.

Levels of pollution and significant fluctuations in temperature and humidity associated with road side and car park installations may impact on RCD protection availability – see PD IEC/TR 62350:2006.

The HSE’s Electricity at Work Regulations guidance (HSR25 3rd Edition) Regulation 4(2) states: “Practical experience of use may indicate an adjustment to the frequency at which maintenance needs to be carried out.”

In other words, the intervals between inspection, testing and maintenance must be based on the actual service conditions and experience related to that installation.

To verify RCD protection availability, checks and tests would initially have to be performed more frequently, to determine the optimum time between tests.

If the RCD test button is operated and the RCD fails to trip, the installation must be checked by an appropriately electrically skilled person, before the charge point is returned to service. Doepke can provide HD version RCCBs for installations subjected to tough ambient conditions.

RCDs selected strictly in accordance with the regulations, installed and maintained correctly, perform a key safety function in all EV charging infrastructure.

RCDs that are tested regularly (using the test button), will give a longer and more reliable service life than devices that are tested infrequently.

Lighting controls allow for lighting in rooms to be automatically adjusted to make the best use of daylight, whatever the season

THE SEASON FOR SAVINGS IS HERE With longer days and warmer temperatures comes the need for better energy management, and clever energy controls are the key, says Mike Brooks, Marketing Manager at CP Electronics.

S

horts, barbecues, temperatures venturing into the double digits, and clocks on British Summertime. If the last two words in that sentence didn’t give it away, it’s that time of the year again – summer.

Yet, even with longer, sunnier days, is natural light really being taken advantage of? In residential, perhaps it is, as the responsibility is on the homeowner or tenant to switch lights off. However, in the commercial and public sector, it is likely that lights are left on even when not required, regardless of how bright it is.

On the flip side, with warmer temperatures, air conditioning (AC) usage is likely to be on the up. Yet, once switched on, it is probable that users then don’t switch the AC off, whether they are there to benefit from it or not. Frequently, air conditioning is left running continually, 24/7, whether through necessity to cool IT equipment, or through absent-mindedness.

One major factor is the lack of ownership – both literally and figuratively – of the people using the AC and lighting

systems. Generally, occupiers aren’t the bill payers, so there is little incentive to be mindful about switching off the power when, for example, leaving a room.

Or they’ll intentionally leave the AC on overnight in the office to ensure a pleasant temperature the next day.

However, energy management need not be left at the mercy of building users.

Clever, intuitive energy controls are widely available now to curb unnecessary energy spend.

Sunny day savings Maybe we are accustomed to working with artificial lighting and at a certain lux level. With particularly sunny days, this can inhibit the way we work, as rooms can be ‘over lit’, causing glare, eye strain and discomfort.

Reducing energy usage and tackling poor lighting problems is now easier and more affordable than ever. For instance, lighting controls allow for the lighting in schools to be automatically adjusted to make the

best use of daylight, whatever the season.

This can create potential energy savings, ranging from around 30-50%.

An example of these energy saving controls is the EBDSPIR-DD from CP Electronics, a direct dimming detector with lux level sensing. This detector has a DALI/DSI dimming technology that can graduate the lighting in a classroom, so lights are dimmer near the windows and brighter in darker areas of the classroom.

With a variety of short to long range detectors, now there are solutions that fit any space. This means whether it’s saving energy, setting lighting scenes, or promoting wellbeing and comfort, it’s all available at a touch of a button.

Making AC control a breeze Similar to lighting controls, AC can also be controlled automatically, thanks to the innovative GESM-AC from CP Electronics.

This device is a battery-powered, passive infrared (PIR) sensor that provides auto on/auto off switching of infrared controlled AC units. The result is a system that regulates usage based on room occupancy – ensuring that air conditioning is only powered when a room is occupied, rather than running continuously, to save energy costs.

The detector must be positioned where it can ‘see the room’ and the AC unit, so

that the infrared can communicate and the PIR can also detect movement. As long as this is done, the GESM-AC will limit air conditioning usage to times when it’s necessary – and switch it off when it’s not. That’s a real win, but the even bigger benefit to building owners and specifiers is its versatility.

On the one hand, the GESM-AC can be hardwired via USB, which makes it ideal for new buildings and future projects, as developers can specify the unit to build energy efficiency into the framework and infrastructure of their buildings.

On the other hand, the unit can be surface mounted and battery-powered, with no wiring needed, and is also suitable for manual operation. So, for retrofit and refurb projects – as well as for small fit-out operations – developers and owners can enhance the energy efficiency of their own legacy air conditioning systems quickly and easily.

Being smart in summer The cliché of British summers is that they last for merely a week. However, recent years have shown that the UK does get its fair share of sunshine and nice weather, with 2018 being the joint hottest summer for UK. With the simple addition of smart controls, those in charge of building management need not panic about how a hot summer can impact on energy spends and wellbeing.

Despite the smart home’s rise in prominence, 16% of UK households have no intention of curbing their energy use

W

ith the continued evolution of the smart home, there’s been a lot of buzz about how we can become more energy efficient. Yet, even so – recent research conducted by Schneider Electric has revealed that a staggering 10 million Brits, equating to roughly 16% of UK households, have no intention of curbing their energy use.

However, this will change. The rise in popularity of television programmes like Our Planet is ensuring that the impact of our energy consumption and our living habits is at the forefront of our minds – so it’s time to make a change. A great place to start is during home renovations. Go back a few years, and home renovations focused on the aesthetics. Yet, now, it’s all about the systems that make houses liveable – power, lighting and heating – and the costs and impact on the environment associated with them.

We are seeing a concerted, consumerdriven movement to turn the UK’s houses into smart homes, and consumers are expected to spend more on smart home products over the next 12 months. In fact, it is estimated that smart home spending will hit £65bn by 2020, according to a report by Juniper Research. While this goal may appear to be ambitious, it does not have to be onerous. TEACHERS TAKE CONTROL AT TECH SCHOOL Abtec Building Technologies has recently upgraded the environmental controls in various buildings at a secondary school near Peterborough. As well as reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, the new controls have provided the school with greater ease of use and operational efficiencies.

erving pupils aged from 11 to 18, Arthur Mellows Village College is a secondary school in Glinton, around five miles north of Peterborough. Although Olympic medal-winning gymnast Louis Smith and footballer Luke Steele (goalkeeper at Nottingham Forest) are among notable alumni, the school is an academy with a specialism in technology.

As such, facilities like its science department require regular investment.

The original project

The Arthur Mellow Village College is benefitting from innovative temperature and lighting controls

The college relocated its science department to a new build in 2009, leaving its previous building to become disused and unfit for purpose. However, the school recently wanted to breathe new life into the old science department building and, with a combination of funds from DfE grants, The Wolfson Foundation and its own financial resources, the college set about creating a vision that would be called the McLaren Building. The upgraded facility would house art, science and media studies classrooms.

A major aspect of the refurbishment would focus on the upgrading of environmental controls, with Abtec

appointed by the project consultant to undertake this work.

“In the old science block, we were tasked with providing integrated lighting controls, mechanical vents and a BMS plant room based on Tridium technology – totally replacing the old systems,” explains Phil Peer, Project Manager at Abtec.

Upon completion of the work, it was clear to see that the McLaren Building, which opened in 2016, had been refurbished to a very high standard. Indeed, the facility exceeds current thermal insulation levels.

Housed within the revamped building are five dedicated art classrooms, a kiln room, screen-printing room, two science laboratories, a science preparation room, two media rooms, a media studio, a computer room and two further classrooms.

The total cost of refurbishment works and fit-out was approximately £1.5 million.

Further works Due to the success of the McLaren Building, Abtec has since completed several additional projects at Arthur Mellows Village College, including the introduction of a BMS in the humanities block, lighting controls in the newly constructed site office block, and lighting controls and BMS in the sports hall.

“All of the newly introduced lighting is based on LED technology, which – in combination with the Abtec control systems – means a better learning environment for pupils.”

“We also performed BMS works in the main plant room, which was originally served by another system,” says Peer. “Equipment has been installed that interfaces with other plant rooms – it’s all in one place. The college sublets spaces for events, so the BMS had to offer easy adjustment.”

Another area that leveraged the expertise of Abtec was the refectory, where extra space was constructed on to the existing block. Abtec provided a solution for controlling the underfloor heating, CO2 mechanical vent, lighting control and plant room controls – all of which were fed from the main plant room.

“Throughout the various projects, we adopted an agnostic approach, using DALI, which is industry-recognised open technology,” says Peer. “It was important to avoid reliance on any one manufacturer, so if something needs to be replaced, it can be.”

The systems installed by Abtec also facilitate the automatic testing of emergency lighting on a monthly basis, a function that saves on labour costs and time – boosting operational efficiency in the process.

A common head end sits on a virtual school server, so all data is aggregated back to one place. In addition, a single set of graphics is deployed across all plant rooms to provide the same look and feel.

All of the newly introduced lighting is based on LED technology, which – in combination with the Abtec control systems – means a better learning environment for pupils.

Furthermore, a new heating plant is helping to drive energy efficiency and CO2 reductions in line with Part L of the Building Regulations.

“The temperature and lighting are a lot easier to control now, whereas before it was difficult to say the least,” states Gary Wentworth, Site Manager at Arthur Mellows Village College. “We had to go down to the boiler room and locate the right switch, which was not necessarily obvious. Now, it’s all centralised on one computer, so we can alter time zones and schedules, and respond to issues quickly; it only takes a couple of minutes. The lighting has daylight harvesting control, which is saving energy as well as ensuring the right light levels for students and staff.”

A TOTAL LIGHTING OVERHAUL FWB, an industrial supplier of tools, fasteners, electrical equipment and workwear, recently decided to upgrade its lighting to increase efficiency and cut energy costs. Long-life LEDs supplied by Goodlight are meeting this need, both at trade counters and in the warehouses, and are providing consistent light levels.

ED lighting brand, Goodlight, recently announced that FWB – an established supply chain partner – has replaced fluorescent lights at its sites in Stoke-on-Trent, Wrexham and Truro with linear LED high bays, LED battens and Eco LED ceiling panels.

A total of 8,200 square metres of warehousing, trade counters and offices are now illuminated with long life, energy efficient Goodlight LED lighting. FWB chose Goodlight for the quality and value of the products as a distributor, and

FWB, which was established in 1963, provides a diverse range of products, including pipeline and fittings, fasteners, tools and workwear to the industrial, infrastructure, construction and public sector markets. FWB was looking to replace the inefficient lighting in its three trade counters and offices to save on energy and maintenance overheads; and thus selected Goodlight Eco LED ceiling panels, which have been designed to slot into existing ceiling grids with ease, making them the thinnest, most lightweight panel on the market.

THERE’S MODULAR, AND THERE’S MODULAR Mike Elms, Sales and Marketing Director at Centiel UK, explains the critical differences between a modular UPS and a true modular UPS.

T

he UPS industry has seen changes in topology, from single standalone units to multiple redundant configurations, the establishment of the transformerless-based design, and the modular concept. The driver has been to reduce energy and seek higher efficiency, while at the same time increasing availability by removing single points of failure. Most major manufacturers’ UPS have very high online operating efficiencies, and there are now more modular type systems in the market.

However, the term ‘modular’ can have different interpretations for different individuals. Therefore, it is important to analyse the nature of what is being described as a ‘modular system’ carefully when purchasing a UPS, to ensure the essential power of the data centre is protected at all times. Understanding the configuration and the definition of a modular system carefully, before the deal is done, is therefore critical.

Defining a modular system At the most basic level, a single standalone UPS unit that protects a critical load is known as an N system configuration.

However, a standalone UPS lacks any resilience in the event that the unit develops a fault or is offline for preventative maintenance. Paralleling a second standalone UPS unit of the same rating, provides resilience and is known as an N+1 configuration. It would be possible to parallel several standalone units together of an individual smaller rating to give the same philosophy. At the most basic level,

this could be described as a modular UPS system. However, there does need to be the associated electrical infrastructure – switchgear, etc. – to be able to add more standalone units.

Another definition of modular is a standalone UPS designed and manufactured in a modular format. The main component parts of rectifier, inverter and static switch are modular; that is to say, they can be withdrawn/inserted as a single component.

If there is a problem with the rectifier, for example, it can be swapped easily. The challenge with this configuration is that if one component does fail, the whole UPS functionality goes down with it. It may be a modular system by definition, but its level of availability will not be reliable.

A truly modular UPS A better solution is what we term ‘a true modular UPS’. This is where several individual UPS modules are contained within a frame. All the individual modules are UPSs in their own right, all containing a rectifier, inverter, and static switch and all operating online in parallel with each other. For example, eight 20kW UPS modules may typically be contained within a single frame, offering a resilient configuration of 140KWs N+1. Various frame and module sizes are available. If required, it takes moments (around 30 seconds) to ‘hot-swap’ a module while the rest of the modules continue to protect the critical load. At no point does the system need to be transferred to maintenance bypass and hence on raw mains.

Some other modular systems include the rectifier and inverter within their modules, but the static switch is a

centralised and separate component. This results in a potential single point of failure.

It may only take a few moments to replace a separate static switch, but, depending on location, getting to the site to replace it may take a maintenance engineer several hours.

During that time, the system cannot transfer to static bypass. With a true modular system, where the static switch is included in each module, the rest of the modules in the UPS frame continue to protect the load until it can be replaced. This increases the level of availability dramatically.

Assessing the costs When selecting a UPS system, the up-front CAPEX necessarily comes into question.

This can lead organisations to purchase at a lesser cost, but at the risk of buying a lesser product. Therefore, it is essential to check all proposals to ensure that you are being offered a modular system that really will do the job intended: protect the critical power of your data centre with the highest level of availability. The installation of a higher CAPEX, higher quality UPS system can realise cost savings over the long-term through increased efficiency, resulting in lower running costs and a lower overall total cost of ownership (TCO), so doing a full cost analysis is usually worth calculating.

In LED lighting, they are particularly useful, because you can have a large number of LED driver power supplies operating in parallel. When the AC mains input is switched on, this can result in very high peak currents, as the input capacitors of the LED drivers all charge up at the same time, which can cause a very large current surge which will result in circuit breakers tripping.

The PSICL series is a true current limiter and cuts off all peak currents when starting loads under practically every AC condition. Extreme conditions can occur on AC lines in the event of a break in the supply, and when power returns, high current peaks can often cause havoc and trip circuit breakers.

In decentralised areas, this will often lead to increased maintenance costs, as the breakers require resetting. This is especially the case in remote areas, such as tunnels etc., where the circuit breakers are not easily accessible to maintenance operators. The PSICL current limiter prevents this happening and can result in reduced cable cross section used and smaller and faster circuit breakers can be used.

The PSICL Series is available in three 230VAC single phase input models with continuous operating current rating of 12A, 16A and 25A. Current limiting time is

100-500ms with repeat intervals of 1000ms.

They have an operating temperature range of -40ºC to +70ºC and conform to EN609501 and EN61000-6-2, 3 standards and are CE and RoHS. MTBF figures are 300,000 hours.

The PSICL is a housed in a low profile V0 flammability rated plastic case, measuring 91H x 71W x 57Dmm. There is also an alternative mechanical design designated PSESB series, which is available in a very slim width enclosure with measurements of 100H x 22.5W x 112Dmm. This model is also DIN Railmounted and internal circuitry is identical for both the PSICL and PSESB versions.

RAMPING UP THE POWER High voltage power contractor, Smith Brothers, has begun work on the first of Arlington Energy’s energy storage and gas peaking projects – a short term operating reserve (STOR) site in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Here’s a look at how the project unfolded.

This is the first STOR site set to be added to Arlington Energy’s planned 1GW portfolio of UK energy storage and gas peaking projects

ith work having commenced on the Chesterfield Road development in April 2019, the site is set to house eight gas generators and the associated infrastructure. Once complete, the plant will provide back-up power generation to the National Grid, and Smith Brothers is also working alongside Northern Power Grid (NPg) to achieve a 66kV connection for the power generation of the plant.

The planned turnkey programme of works sees the Elland-based contractor carrying out all engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) civil and electrical engineering aspects of the connection assignment – from the initial design, through to final commissioning.

What exactly is involved?

Preliminary works saw Smith Brothers’ specialist power system design team oversee all EPC electrical and civil design and approval processes for the contestable elements of the project – including those on behalf of the DNO. The EPC works will include the procurement, delivery, installation and commissioning of eight 2.5MW gas generators and an 11kV switchboard – as well as the required on-site gas pipe engineering. Meanwhile, private works will include planning, proving and laying of the cable route, as well as procurement, delivery, installation and commissioning of a 66/11kV power transformer and 66kV switchgear – alongside all associated infrastructure.

In order to reduce environmental impact to the surrounding areas, the development will be surrounded by an acoustic barrier fence and – upon completion – the site will be landscaped, in order to encourage local wildlife to return.

Matt Clare, Director of Arlington Infrastructure, adds, “It’s great to see work having started on the Chesterfield Road site. It’s the first of many gas peaking projects Arlington has in the pipeline, and – given the scale of our portfolio and approach to the market generally – it was crucial that we partnered with a trusted counterparty who would take care of all our EPC and technical needs.”

The Smith Brothers team, along with a project manager, site manager and several sub-contractors, will work towards the final commissioning of the scheme, and subsequent energisation, by September 2019.

NEW MERIDIAN LED CABINET LIGHTING The CED Electrical Group promised that 2019, its 25th anniversary year, would feature a host of new products and, for the Meridian brand, this begins with new CE approved cabinet light fittings.

Suitable for kitchen counter lighting, cabinets and recessed areas, there are new Linklites from 310mm up to 1,170mm in length, and in power terms, from 4W to 16W. Designed to allow up to ten fittings to be linked together, they have a flicker-free operation and come with 2,700 or 4,000 changeable colour rendition. Silver aluminium cabinet lights follow, with 8W and 10W variants and lengths from 310 to 565mm – including an infrared sensor option. All products are IP20 rated and deliver a beam angle of 150°.

PRYSMIAN LAUNCHES CPR COMPLIANT DRAKA CABLE Cable manufacturer, Prysmian Group, has launched a new, UK manufactured Draka UC400 23 Category 6 U/UTP LSHF D64 Cca data cable.

The new cable has been designed and engineered by the Prysmian Group Multi Media Solutions business to comply with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) to Euroclass Cca s1a d1 a1 fire performance rating, provide a high degree of usability, including deployment from a 305m Reelex box and delivering full Category 6 / Class E compliant electrical performance.

CPR for cable products that are permanently installed in buildings has been in force since July 2017. To meet these stringent fire safety tests, the existing Draka Cat.6 U/UTP Eca cable needed to be redesigned. Prysmian Group developed a new Cat. 6 U/UTP Cca cable that meets both criteria without compromise: high data transmission levels are maintained, and the cable is genuinely CPR Cca rating compliant, even when used from a Reelex box.
