BRIGHT FUTURE As the year draws to a close, we would like to welcome you to the final ECN supplement of 2018. The darker days and longer nights of winter are creeping up on us, switching the spotlight on to one of the cornerstones of the electrical industry: lighting. From a bedside lamp to large-scale commercial lighting, it is a vital part of every aspect of life. September this year brought with it the ban on inefficient mains voltage non-directional halogen – just another sign that the future landscape of lighting will look very different. It looks as though lighting is only going to get smarter, simpler and more energy-efficient – so what can we do as an industry to prepare for the changes that are coming our way? In this supplement, you’ll find comment from a wide range of industry experts and the latest products in the world of lighting. From selecting the right LED to embracing smart technologies and IoT, ECN’s lighting supplement is set to guide you into the future of lighting.

DANLERS
PURE AND SIMPLE DANLERS explains how its new occupancy detectors make the most of Bluetooth communication to offer smart and simple lighting control.
D
ANLERS’ new range of ‘Casambi-enabled’ occupancy detectors use Bluetooth Low Energy communication to control lighting, without the need for any wiring between the controls and the luminaires.
Any number of Casambi-enabled luminaires and controls in a building will automatically form a mesh network, and the Casambi app can be used to quickly and simply set up any required control system. This has major advantages in cost, ease of installation and flexibility.
Casambi networks are both reliable and secure, and devices can be added or taken away at any time. They can also be integrated with existing DALI or 1-10VDC systems.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE
MOVING ON UP Knightsbridge details some of the highlights out of its brand-new catalogue.
I
t’s been a busy year for Knightsbridge. With a complete brand makeover and a move to a bigger, better facility under our belt, we’re ready to take our service, quality and innovation to the next level. We are launching a brand-new catalogue for 2019 with over 2,600 products to choose from across a huge array of lighting and wiring accessories, meaning you’re sure to find the perfect fit for the job. Within these pages are some of our newest launches and innovations, including our brand-new range of floodlights and a Bluetooth speaker wall outlet in a range of finishes, exclusive to Knightsbridge. We are always exploring new ways of getting more out of the lighting and wiring accessories we use on a daily basis. As technology evolves, we are seeing more and more demand for products with functionality that wasn’t available five years ago; we work closely with our suppliers to ensure each product we sell incorporates the latest technology, benefiting those who install and those who use it. Our products undergo extensive quality control at every step of the process to ensure the highest quality and value for money. Here are just a few of the new launches from the new catalogue:
Easy-install IP65 LED floodlights (product code: FLR) Key benefits: •V ery easy to install with angled mounting bracket and internal junction box • I P65 PIR sensor models available with manual override function • I deal for domestic, commercial and security installations Our brand-new floodlights are designed for a fast, efficient fit, with an angled mounting bracket and internal junction box. The angled bracket eliminates the need for the bracket to be removed during installations, and the internal connector block within the housing allows the installer to wire directly to the fixture without the need for external connections and boxes required by traditional pre-flexed floodlights. Both non-PIR and PIR models are available in 10W, 20W, 30W and 50W, emitting a 4,000K colour temperature. They are durable and highly reliable; all floodlights hold an IP65 rating and come with a three-year warranty as standard.
Curved edge grid solutions Key benefits: •C omplementary to our full range of curved edge switches and sockets •F ront loading system for easy installation •L aser-printed rocker covers for a quality finish
Dim-to-warm IP65 fire-rated downlights (product code: RW6DTW) Key benefits: • I deal for hospitality and domestic environments •E asy to install: loop-in/loop-out with push-fit terminals •S imple wall switch operation, userfriendly options •M ultiple bezel finishes available separately The latest addition to our RW6 series of downlights, this new model allows users to rotate between colour temperatures (2,200K – 3,000K) and control the ambience of a room via a dimmer. Alongside this model, we also sell warm white and daylight versions, as well as a CCT-adjustable via wall switch option.
LED CCT adjustable downlight (product code: RDL9CCT) Key benefits: •B uilt-in trailing-edge dimmable LED driver •H igh efficiency SMD LED chips •P re-wired 300mm cable
Earlier this year we launched a full range of new grid solutions across our hugely popular ccrewless, flat plate and metal clad ranges, and this offering has now extended to our curved edge range. Curved edge switches and sockets come with a clean white finish on gently contoured 7mm plates and soft rounded edges. We now offer 1G – 12G grid faceplates and a range of modules and laser-printed rocker switch covers to complement the full range. All of this is just a taster of what’s inside the new catalogue. Knightsbridge, mlaccessories.co.uk
The new addition to our commercial downlight range, the RDL9CCT is convenient and efficient with an integrated design and loop-in/loopout compatibility. To adjust the colour temperature, simply choose from three settings (3,000K, 4,000K, and 5,700K) via a switch on the rear of the product.

LEDVANCE
EFFICIENCY IS KEY LEDVANCE outlines how it recently helped Ability International increase illuminance in its manufacturing facility by 20%, delivering 68% energy cost savings.
P
eterborough-based Ability International has selected LEDVANCE Damp Proof LED luminaires to retrofit its entire warehouse, in a project to improve the working environment and reduce energy and maintenance costs. The UK company specialises in providing working-atheight solutions, custom-built to client’s specifications and requirements. With more than 23 years’ experience of manufacturing aluminium scaffold towers and access equipment, Ability International offers many of its solutions custom-built to client’s specifications and requirements.
Overdue upgrade The company had been based at the site for just over a year when it became apparent that the lighting in the manufacturing facility needed to be updated. The existing lighting installation included 51 six-foot fluorescent linear luminaires with two tubes per fitting. It was using 8.7kW per hour and costing the business £273 a month. Staff had also voiced their concerns about the lack of light over the work benches and machines. Retrofitting the entire warehouse area with LED fittings enabled the company to improve the working environment whilst reducing energy and maintenance costs. Project contractor Lighting Electricians Limited chose LEDVANCE 55W Damp Proof LED luminaires to complete the installation. These luminaires provide uniform light with a wide beam angle of 105° and a high luminous efficacy of up to 115lm/W. IP65 protection makes it ideal for industrial and storage facilities.

“Retrofitting the entire warehouse area with LED fittings enabled the company to improve the working environment whilst reducing energy and maintenance costs.”
Easy install The LEDVANCE 55W Damp Proof LED luminaire range is designed to offer easy installation, with stainless steel clamps and safety screws provided alongside mounting accessories (suspension kit, theft protection kit). Reliable luminaire quality with a lifetime of up to 50,000 hours is backed by a five-year guarantee. Ease of installation and assembly was particularly useful to the team at Lighting Electricians. As part of their commitment to reduce the impact on their client’s operations during a project, the company pre-assembles and completes as much of the installation as possible in their workshop facility off-site. The LEDVANCE products ensured that their time onsite was as efficient as possible. After completing the installation, the contractor recorded that illuminance has improved by 20%. The new luminaires reduced energy demand of the installation by 5kW per hour, saving the client 68% on their energy costs. Ease of installation was a decisive factor according to Lighting Electricians: “The LEDVANCE luminaires offered an excellent luminous efficacy, at a very reasonable price and with a good guarantee. They look and feel like quality fittings. For us, the deciding factor will always be ease of install. The LEDVANCE fitting connected simply using pushfit connectors with all additional parts included. It was an easy choice after that.”
Client Ability International adds, “The end result was a great surprise to us all. The brightness and clarity of light is stunning, with a high visual comfort. It is a lovely clear white light with a great spread, leaving no dark areas; a very important feature in an engineering environment. As for the power consumption, the measured energy reduction looks very promising. The figures from the monitor indicate that we should reduce our lighting bill significantly.”
Consider your environment Light can fulfil a wide range of different functions and purposes in a multitude of applications, and when the correct lighting is selected, it can enhance productivity while at the same time significantly reduce energy costs. LEDVANCE offers innovative lighting solutions to improve not just the quality, running costs and safety of lighting, but also reduce the maintenance required and enhance productivity. It is important to consider the environmental conditions when selecting lighting solutions such as dust, humidity, heat and vibration. Likewise, the appropriate positioning of luminaires is essential in order to avoid reflections on workpiece or machine surfaces, and to provide the optimum working environments. GREENBROOK ELECTRICAL
RAISING THE BAR Peter Ratcliffe, sales director, explains why Greenbrook Electrical is becoming a go-to lighting choice for electrical wholesalers and contractors.
A
s the manufacturer of the award-winning RCD Powerbreaker brand, Greenbrook has taken its philosophy of quality and expert design into its LED lighting ranges. The fire-rated Vela downlight, initially launched two years ago, now sees the addition of three new exciting ranges. Launched at the recent ELEX show in Coventry, Greenbrook has added the Vela Switch, Vela V7 and Vela Compact PRO ranges to the already popular Vela Advance and Vela Compact. This new updated Vela range firmly establishes Greenbrook as a leading supplier of fire-rated downlights. This range ticks every box for our customers, giving the choice and variety demanded in this challenging sector of the lighting industry.
Making waves Electrical contractors are certainly taking note of these developments. Rising elegantly into the skyline in London, GW Franklin contractors have installed Vela Advance fire-rated downlights throughout 89 apartments at Dock Street, near the Tower of London. It certainly sets the tone for the luxurious feel of this amazing project. As there has been a focus on the effect of glare from LED lighting, Greenbrook offers large stocks of antiglare downlights from the 9W anti-glare Advance fitting to the new anti-glare Vela V7. Working closely with Acorn Homes and DMO Contractors, Greenbrook has supplied almost 800 anti-glare downlights to a project at Alwen Court in London.

Greenbrook.indd 10
“In a very demanding market, LED lighting is still a large growth area and you must never stand still.”
Electrical contractors now demand more choice from lighting manufacturers and Greenbrook is keen to support this. With a complete range of fire-rated products in Vela, we also offer five different ranges of LED cabinet lights to suit every application for domestic and commercial projects. With a history of commercial lighting projects with Next Retail and the Arcadia Group, Greenbrook’s cabinet lighting range will also meet the changing demands of domestic kitchen installations for house builders and contractors.
Quality control Product quality and safety is paramount to the Greenbrook business. This is already a reputation we enjoy given the fact that we manufacture the well-established and trusted Powerbreaker range. With a very strict policy of quality control on our products, Greenbrook works closely with all the industry bodies, including the LIA, to promote independent product testing for all our LED lighting products. Following our drive on safety and lighting, Greenbrook has also recently launched the Phoenix emergency lighting range. As one of the hottest topics and most discussed areas in lighting, emergency lighting is vital for commercial premises and projects.
The Greenbrook technical engineers ensured all legislation and regulations were followed to create a range that offers LED energy efficiency, whilst meeting all emergency lighting standards.
Trusted brand It is no surprise that Greenbrook has already made a statement with our Phoenix range in the market working on projects for many contractors and wholesalers. We are certainly trusted to provide products to meet this sensitive and highly important area of the LED lighting industry. Our aim over the next two years is to grow this part of our business in the UK and establish Greenbrook as a key supplier and manufacturer of quality lighting products. Electrical wholesalers never really saw Greenbrook as a lighting company but that is certainly starting to change, especially given our recent product additions and projects that we have secured. In a very demanding market, LED lighting is still a large growth area and you must never stand still. This year has been a challenging year (to say the least!) which is why it is important to always be looking to develop new products. Our wholesaler stockists are vital to our growth and we value the relationships and support in delivering our exciting LED products to the UK market. Greenbrook Electrical, greenbrook.co.uk

FLEX7
THE BIG TWO-OH As flex7 hits a milestone anniversary, the company outlines what it has to offer after 20 years of industry experience.
f
lex7 celebrated 20 years of trading this October. In 1998, flex7 created the world’s first seven-pole lighting connection interface. Since then, we’ve designed an entire connection and control system around these clever plug and socket modules. Twenty years of design and refinement have resulted in a series of products that are incredibly userfriendly, quick to install and offer timesaving during installation, with the added benefit of simple ongoing maintenance. This year saw the launch of our revolutionary range of plug-in light switches – the first of their kind, and yet another opportunity to save valuable installation time on-site. Next year looks to be another exciting year for flex7 with a number of new products on the horizon. Despite many additions to our product range over the years, our lighting distribution box remains at the heart of the system. Designed to minimise the labour content of commercial luminaire installation, this was the first product out of the flex7 stable to incorporate our unique interface, and was very quickly adopted by the industry. A comprehensive redesign in 2011 allowed us to turn a pretty good product into the excellent one it is today, and make it a first choice for electrical consultants and contractors the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland.
Quality front and centre Both mechanically and electrically, the lighting distribution box is the most robust product in its class. The aluminium extruded body gives it the strength required to withstand the rigours of installation, whilst the patented internal contact system means any risk of high resistive ‘weak’ points are, unlike alternative connection unit designs, entirely eliminated, ensuring years of uninterrupted service. Furthermore, should the unit be exposed to fire, all non-metallic parts are made from a flame retardant, selfextinguishing, halogen-free material – PA6 UL96 V0 rated, to be precise.
12 | November 2018
Flex7.indd 12
Time is money Installing the connection unit couldn’t be simpler. Two very strong, spring steel clips are supplied with every unit. A single central fixing is all that’s required for each; plug and screw, nut and bolt, wedge anchor, Hilti (type) fixing – all your call. Once they’re attached to the building fabric or containment, the unit simply snaps into place. The clips have a grip any selfrespecting crocodile would be proud of, holding the connection unit securely in place and crucially, because they’re metal, allow full compliance with 521.11.201 of the IET Wiring Regulations, 17th Edition, or 521.10.202 for those of you already conversant with the recently released 18th Edition. Finally, on the subject of fixing, the unit can be quickly released from its clips should repositioning be necessary at some point in the future; no more struggling with damaged, rusty screw heads while stretching into the ceiling void. Connecting the fixed wiring is also a breeze. Just one screw secures the slide-off terminal cover and there are multiple 20mmØ and a 25mmØ knockouts to accept conduit adaptors or cable glands of any variety. Once inside, there is plenty of space to allow neat routing of the wiring to the strong, cage clamp terminals, each of which easily accept three x 2.50mm2 conductors. Regardless of variant, every flex7 connection unit has two earth terminals in order to allow compliance with 543.7.1.204 of the IET Wiring Regulations 17th and 18th Editions, when the need arises. Continuing with the ‘what you get as standard’ theme, all of our connection units contain seven contacts, which means that even if you’re only installing on/off luminaires to start with, there’s always an upgrade path to regulating (dimmable) luminaires or products with more complex control requirements if things change in the future.
flex7 has utilised its 20 years of experience in designing its products
Joined-up thinking There are three basic type of flex7 connection unit: •O ne employs a single control device (switch, sensor etc.) to control every outlet •O ne employs two control devices (switches, sensors etc.) to control their own individual group of outlets • One employs two completely separate supplies (same phase, separate neutrals) to feed and control their own individual group of outlets – ideal for essential/nonessential circuits such as those often used in hospital installations. Two other variants, our tap-off and extender unit, give you the option to simply plug-in extra outlets should you require them. Every flex7 connection unit is available with 2, 4, 6, 8, ten or twelve outlets and can accept traditional hard-wired control (a 230V switch for example) directly into its terminals. Connection units available from flex7 are: •D esigned specifically with speed of installation in mind •M echanically and electrically robust ade with safe materials should the •M unthinkable happen •F eature-rich and allow compliance with necessary legislation •C omprehensive in range and flexible in application •A ppropriate for every type of commercial lighting project •P art of a complete modular concept •A t home whether used stand-alone, semi-modular or fully modular •D esigned and manufactured wholly in the UK by a UK company. se of LED lighting is on the rise in factories and warehouses, with companies reaping the benefits of huge energy savings and significantly reduced maintenance costs. Lighting levels can also be greatly increased to provide even illumination across a warehouse or factory floor, giving better visibility and eliminating shadows or dark areas. In warehouse and factory environments, the colour temperature of LED lamps can make a difference to the look and feel of a space, and often affects staff well-being throughout the workplace. Goodlight LED lamps and luminaires come in three colour temperatures: daylight, natural and warm. Cleaner, whiter light can aid concentration, reduce eye strain and increase productivity in the warehouse or production floor, whilst warm light improves the ambience in staff communal areas. LED Eco Lights has designed the award-winning Goodlight range of retrofit LED lamps and luminaires especially for industrial and commercial applications. Goodlight LED luminaires are widely renowned for their unique designs, quality of build and engineering, with innovative solutions to increase efficiency and reliability. All products provide immediate energy savings, reach full brightness instantly and are virtually maintenance free. They are also fully controllable and can be dimmed to exactly the level required at any particular time. This is beneficial in warehouse and factory environments that typically have long operating hours and don’t always require 100% illumination.
The Goodlight LED range has proved popular with design, engineering and sustainability professionals, delivering energy-efficient, low-maintenance lighting in high profile installations including Quorn Foods, Hi-Speed Services and Middlesex Aerospace.
Turning energy efficiency into RoI The most obvious benefit of upgrading to LED lighting is the improvement in energy efficiency. This has an immediate impact on the monthly electricity spend, with demonstrated energy savings of up to 85%. Typical return on investment (RoI) calculations show full payback from as little as three months. The installation of Goodlight’s highperformance, energy efficient T8 LED tubes at Quorn Foods’ manufacturing plant in North Yorkshire illustrates the financial benefits upgrading to LED lighting can bring. Quorn Foods achieved a payback in just eight months, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Improved light distribution Goodlight LED technology provides very directional light that can be focused where needed and is flicker free. High-performance LED lighting is very consistent, providing an even spread of light, without colour shifting or contrast imbalances. This is especially beneficial in warehouses and production facilities where directional crisp, bright light helps eliminate shadows and dark corners where accidents may occur. Good visibility can also improve assembly accuracy and manufacturing productivity. The large, open spaces of a warehouse building or distribution centre require adequate illumination so items can be identified and workers can navigate through aisles easily, reducing the risk of accidents and damage to stored items. Hi-Speed Services, a transport and logistics company, were delighted with the improved working conditions in their warehouse after upgrading to LED lighting. In selecting Goodlight IP65 G5 LED battens, they were able to downsize the number of light fixtures needed due to the increased light output, achieving brighter illumination with fewer lights.
Eliminating maintenance costs Warehouses and industrial buildings characteristically have high ceilings and therefore the lifetime of the light fittings is important. The costs of changing a lamp often involve the use of specialist equipment and is costly. The long lifespan of industrial LED lamps means that fixtures need to be replaced far less frequently. One manufacturer that has eliminated maintenance costs is Middlesex Aerospace, which replaced its outdated fluorescent lighting in its 50,000 sqft production factory and inspection area with Goodlight GX1 Plus LED high bays and T8 LED tubes. Goodlight LED lamps and luminaires are rated at 50,000 hours, over triple the typical fluorescent tube, giving site operators further savings in maintenance budgets. Businesses are able to fund lighting replacement programmes from their operating budgets by taking advantage of Goodlight’s BrightPlan LED leasing scheme. This allows the replacement lights to be paid for directly by the energy savings, and the customer will own the lights outright at the end of the lease. Goodlight offers businesses a free site survey which will provide a detailed breakdown of suitable replacement light fittings, the installed cost and the RoI from savings on energy and maintenance costs. They also guarantee all Goodlight fittings for five years, making installation risk-free.
Benefits to businesses Upgrading to LED lighting can bring many benefits to businesses, including substantial energy savings and a significant reduction in maintenance costs. It can also enhance employee working conditions and improve workforce efficiencies through better, brighter white illumination without glare or flicker. With products such as the award-winning Goodlight range, plus lamps that are specifically designed for retrofit, installation couldn’t be easier. other slave devices can be linked to it to extend the detection area. The unit is programmable, but basic switching and dimming functions can be operated manually. Additional functions can also be set up by remote control. The unit can be set up to be a permanent or timelimited orientation light, ensuring safety critical areas are never dark, while still offering substantial energy cost-savings. Additional B.E.G. parts can be ordered to increase the capacity of the system, linking additional units to work as a group via the DALI/DSI interface for control of digital dimmable electronic ballasts as a group. To solve a common issue in high-bay warehouses where light is only required in one aisle at a time, detectors can be positioned in such
a way using a blind system that the sensors detect movement only in the desired aisle locations.
New to the market B.E.G. director for UK and Ireland, Paul Jones, says, “The B.E.G. PD4 DALI GH represents a chance for warehouses and other high-ceilinged storage and factory buildings to be able to reap the benefits that our other lighting solutions offer. “Previously this technology was unavailable to buildings with high ceilings, but warehouses are ideal for the light and occupancy sensing technology, and once our lights are installed they can make huge savings in energy bills.” B.E.G., beg-luxomat.com

COLLINGWOOD LIGHTING
POWER OF THREE Collingwood Lighting discusses the launch of its new H2 Lite 500 CSP – one light offering three colour temperatures.
A
s technology continues to develop, customers are demanding more creativity, more flexibility and more practicality from their lighting installations than ever before. At Collingwood Lighting, we’re concerned with how those in the trade can deliver these cutting-edge solutions in a cost-effective and efficient manner. For that reason, many of our innovations are focused on making sure products not only deliver the latest advances in technology, but also work well for the wholesaler and contractor. This means ensuring they can be installed on-site as quickly and easily as possible, often with our ‘fix and forget’ philosophy in mind. To that end, August saw the launch of the latest product in our colour switchable range of LED downlights – the H2 Lite 500 CSP.
Luxury of choice This entry-level downlight offers the choice between three different colour temperatures in one luminaire. H2 Lite 500 CSP has three colour temperatures – a warm 3,000K, daylight 4,000K or a cool 6,000K – for three different applications contained within one product. Wholesalers and contractors can carry fewer units, while the end-customer can choose their preferred colour in the home environment. Different colour temperatures can be set according to the purpose and ambience of rooms throughout a home or business using a single product.
Under bezel switch
Easy install
Colour temperature matters
Despite this added versatility, installation couldn’t be easier. It comes complete with T connector allowing for fast loop in, loop out installation, with no additional wiring or control gear. The colour is selected simply by flicking a switch underneath the bezel and can be altered at any time after installation by the end-customer should their requirements for that space change; for added versatility and value for money. The H2 Lite 500 CSP is compatible with our H2 bezels with a range of 12 different finishes to choose from and comes with the Collingwood promise of a four-year guarantee.
Expectations are growing about the quality of light in an installation and there’s now as much focus on visual comfort and practicality as there is on the aesthetics of individual fittings. Once upon a time, getting the lighting right involved utilising a combination of overhead lights and lamps, but new mood-enhancing colour switching technology means that is now a thing of the past. Different colour temperatures can be selected to match the purpose of the room. So, a cosy 3,000K is perfect for a living room, you might choose a daylight 4,000K for the kitchen and a cooler 6,000K for a more practical work space. Our new colour switchable range means all these applications can be easily achieved at the flick of a switch with just one product, offering customers more flexibility and choice than ever before. The H2 Lite 500 CSP boasts all the other revolutionary features that make Collingwood Lighting such a popular choice with electricians, but with three times the functionality. THE LED SPECIALIST
LED MATTERS The LED Specialist clarifies some of the myths and misconceptions about LED bulbs.
Wattage and brightness
24 | November 2018
Lightsave.indd 24
Wattage is often confused with brightness. With traditional lightbulbs, we relied on wattage to indicate brightness. However, with LEDs, wattage does not measure brightness, but it does measure power consumption. LED bulbs emit the same amount of light as traditional light bulbs but at a lower wattage. When selecting LED bulbs, look at light output, which is measured in lumens – it’s indicated on the packaging. For your convenience, the equivalent wattage of traditional bulbs is also shown, because many consumers are still familiar with this – but you need to disregard it in terms of the brightness of the product. As a guideline, a 35W conventional will have an output of 280-300lm and a 50W will be 380-400lm.
light in rooms in your house such as your bedroom. A warm white light, however, may not work in your kitchen or bathroom, as these rooms usually have white fittings, such as sinks or cabinets, which would look more yellow in warm light. We would recommend a white (3,000K) or cool white (4,000K) light for those areas. LED technology has evolved significantly. Today, most LED lights are available in a variety of white colours – everything from very warm white (2,000K) through to daylight (6,500K). You can choose an LED light that shines with the familiar warm glow of a traditional lightbulb, or go for one that mimics natural light. On the next page are some illustrations to assist you in choosing the correct colour temperature.
Light colour
Light quality
The first LED bulbs on the market produced a very blue daylight; many people think that’s still the case. Kelvins are used to measure light colour. Scientific tests have proven how the colour of light can impact upon energy levels and productivity. For example, to relax at home, you would choose a warm
Low quality LEDs have been flooding the market. Many of these LEDs start to noticeably fade after a year. There will be a recognisable colour shift, from initially appearing to be performing well compared to the recognised brands, but the deterioration will rapidly occur in a short space of time.
Most of the renowned LED brands, such as Philips (now Signify), Integral, Osram (Ledvance), Crompton, Megaman, Segula, Bell, Calex, Sylvania and TCP, design their LEDs to provide a consistent quality of light over time. They will keep shining almost as brightly as they did when new for most of their lifetime. Most LEDs from the brands above will last for 15,000 to, in some cases, 50,000 hours; that’s about 30 years based on the average usage of 2.7 hours a day. Many of the brands mentioned above include the CRI (Colour Rendering Index) rating in their product specifications. On a scale of 0-100, natural outdoor light has a CRI of 100 and is used as the standard of comparison for any other light source. As a rule of thumb, the higher the CRI, the better the colours will appear to their true colour, as illustrated below. The reason this is relevant is the impact it has on the human eye. Colours and shapes will appear more vivid and closer to their true colour the higher the CRI. This is extremely important in applications where anything is on display. For example, an art gallery will want to showcase their products in the best light, so a CRI of 90+ will make all the difference here.
Lighting
25/10/2018 14:35
THE LED SPECIALIST Energy efficient cost saving The first LED bulbs cost considerably more than conventional traditional bulbs. Today, they are closer in price. They use less energy and last longer, showing a long-term saving. Many LED bulbs last up to 15,000 or 20,000 hours, which is 15 years when used 2.7 hours per day on average. If a bulb is on for three-and-ahalf hours per day, it will last for 15 years. Most branded LED bulbs consume about 80% less energy than conventional bulbs.
Lighting is decorative As LED technology has evolved, many lighting designers have been crying out for LED filaments to be available. Their prayers have been answered as the filament LED range is rapidly growing. Many brands are now producing LED filaments, variations including dimmable, a variety of shapes, a variety of caps/fitments and also now a variety of colours. There are also variations in the style of the filament, which ranges vastly from the original vertical filament style which was in the first release by many manufacturers. Lighting is no longer a choice made out of purpose, but in fact has become an integral part of interior design as the right lighting product and right light can dramatically influence the feel and popularity of the application it is being installed into.
Smart lighting evolves The most familiar smart lighting products are likely to be the Philips Hue, which has been a front runner in the LED smart lighting market. This is a popular system and now products such as the Osram Smart range are compatible with the Hue hub (gateway). The technology has now evolved to the next level, which means that the hub/ gateway is no longer required, and the products work directly through your Wi-Fi connection. The Smart range is rapidly expanding, with many products enabling you to create a smart home, controlling your heating and lighting. There are now products which can turn a conventional light fitting into a smart app-controlled option with the use of a smart switch. A very useful addition to many smart product ranges is the smart Wi-Fi plug. The days of having to stretch around the back of your Christmas tree to turn the lights on and off are now over with the smart Wi-Fi plug. This enables you to turn on any product plugged in the smart switch into an app-controlled product. Another useful addition are smart sensors, such as the moisture sensor, which are now available. The lighting range is also growing with colour changing or tuneable white LEDs, available in GU10, MR16, ES (E27) or SES (E14).
“As LED technology has evolved, many lighting designers have been crying out for LED filaments to be available.”
LED tubes
Warm dimming
Previously, many installers may have been put off LED tubes due to the misconception that re-wiring may be required. The latest LED tube ranges from recognised manufacturers are designed to be ‘plug and play’. The range includes switch start tubes and also high frequency tubes. The latest addition to many manufacturers’ ranges is the new Universal LED T8, which brings simplicity to your lighting project. Thanks to a unique design, the Universal T8 directly fits into luminaries, operating either on electro magnetic ballasts, HF Electronic ballasts or mains power connections. Perfectly safe, reliable and easy to install, the Universal T8 is the ideal alternative to standard fluorescent tubes to save energy and reduce investment. There are also a variety of outputs available if you do require a higher lumen output from your LED tube.
This means that as the LED dims, the colour of the light will scale to become warmer. From their initial release, LEDs only dimmed in the output of light level and the colour of the light would not change. The products that feature the warm dimming functionality offer a new experience for dimmable LEDs. The gradual dimming feature enables light levels to dim to warm tones of traditional bulbs. Unlike standard LEDs, these warm dimming bulbs offer a dimmable warm glow in a familiar shape that lets you go from everyday functional lighting, to inviting, to cosy. Many of the recognised manufacturers will market this functionality differently with different terms, including ‘dim to warm’, ‘warm glow’, ‘dim tone’ and ‘warm dim’.
Why the prices differ Some of the products may look very similar, even to the point where it is hard to determine the difference. When looking at the cost of LEDs across the board, the way to differentiate between entrylevel ranges and the premium ranges is to look at some key specifications: lifetime, guarantee, colour rendering and dimmable functionality. LUCECO
LESS IS MORE Luceco gives its guide for outdoor LED lighting and floodlights.
A
s autumn changes to winter, demand for outdoor lighting can increase as householders and businesses look to keep their premises safe and secure. When it comes to illumination, selecting the right type of lighting can make a real difference in terms of longterm cost savings and practicality.
Keeping costs down Firstly, it’s important to dispel the myth that installing LEDs is more expensive. With LEDs you are looking at lifetime energy efficiency savings of up to 90% when compared to halogen, and the fact that an LED light will last about 10 times longer than a halogen lamp means maintenance costs are kept to a minimum. LED floodlights such as Luceco’s Guardian Pro are weatherproof, last for 30,000 hours and also come with a twoyear warranty.
Specifying the right lights LEDs provide instant light as soon as they switch on. The beam range is approximately three times the installation height, so if you install a light at 3m height, the beam will reach about 10m – enough for a small yard or garden.
28 | November 2018
Luceco.indd 28
An 8W LED light will deliver the same light output as a 100W halogen bulb, a 15W LED is the equivalent of a 200W halogen alternative, 22W is the same as a 300W halogen unit, and 38W is the same as a 500W halogen floodlight. The reality is that for domestic installations you are unlikely to need more than an 8W or 15W LED floodlight. An 8W light is recommended for installation heights up to 9M, perfect for most homes. They also come in black or white finishes to help them blend in with other external features. For larger domestic or commercial buildings, 15W is ideal for installation heights up to 12m. Higher intensity lights such as the 22W are recommended for a 15m installation height and 38W for up to 18m. These are typically used for large yards or sports grounds, so are a good choice for community halls that want to run evening training sessions, for farms that need to manage and access outbuildings during the dark winter nights, for commercial premises running 24/7 operations, or for car parks.
Luceco’s stadium floodlight range is suitable for large or open areas such as marshalling yards and sports grounds. Made from tough extruded and die-cast aluminium housing with polycarbonate lenses, the floodlights are available in 500 and 1,000W, 60,000 and 120,000lm, with an efficacy of 120Llm/W, ideal for high mast columns.
Security features Floodlights can be fitted with or without passive infra-red (PIR) sensors that detect both movement and heat. Unlike microwave detectors PIR won’t respond to every leaf blowing across the yard, but it will be triggered by people or animals. Our Guardian slimline floodlights with PIR offer up to 10m detection range.
Right place, right time When looking at where to install lights, it is not only the height that can determine future performance, it is also important to make sure the beam doesn’t stray into neighbouring properties and cause a nuisance, by shining directly into their windows for example, so guiding homeowners on the optimum location for their floodlights will ensure many years of hassle-free use. MEGAMAN
LIVING A SMARTER LIFE With smart technology a rapidly growing market, Glen Krise, managing director of Megaman, introduces Megaman’s smart control system and discusses the benefits of incorporating smart technology into a home.
L
aunched in early 2018, Megaman’s Ingenium ZB is a smart system which allows for the simple, streamlined control of lighting and electrical appliances throughout a residential or commercial space. Operated via a simple app-based interface, the system allows the user to wirelessly monitor and schedule connected lighting and other devices from their phone or tablet, even when they are away from home. A widely expandable system, Ingenium ZB is able to connect to more than 150 devices per gateway and control the products to varying schedules. Utilising ZigBee mesh network technology, the system is also compatible with a range of other popular smart products on the market, including voice control systems like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant – allowing for complete control of all connected products with voice commands. Devices can also be grouped, allowing the user to activate all of the lights in one room with one simple voice command or via the app. For ultimate compatibility, with the addition of the Ingenium Smart ZB socket adaptor, any appliance of up to 3,000W can be connected to the system, allowing the user to not only gain wireless control over their lighting but also their everyday household appliances like fans, heaters, lamps or even their televisions. The Smart ZB mains switch module can also be used to connect any LED device (up to 300VA) to the system, allowing for the creation of an automated smart lighting system without the need to invest in all new brand-compatible smart LEDs. Furthermore, the system is also ideal for retrofit applications, as the range’s wall mounted controllers are designed to perfectly replace standard light switches.

“Although smart technology is a growing trend, it is often cited as a cause for concern by consumers.”
Appy campers
Meeting concerns
Building on the success of Ingenium ZB, Megaman has just released a new Ingenium ZB app which, as well as allowing for an even greater number of connected devices, features bi-directional communication between the app and connected products. As such, the status of the product, whether off or on, is indicated by the app. Previously, communication could only be sent one way, as a command from app to product. A logical next step in the app’s development, this new feature will help to reassure users of the status of their appliances and lighting – crucially, this will give users peace of mind when they are away from home and unable to check on the product for themselves. By providing an indication of when an appliance is being used, the new app also enables users to easily keep an eye on daily usage by household members. This is ideal for households trying to cut down on energy costs and for parents trying to monitor kids’ usage of certain appliances. While there are currently a number of home automation systems available, a common problem is often compatibility, with many systems faltering if two different protocols or technologies are installed. Ingenium ZB is compatible with several different protocols, alleviating the need for a bespoke solution and making home automation systems much easier and more accessible for homeowners.
Although smart technology is a growing trend, it is often cited as a cause for concern by consumers. MoneySuperMarket recently conducted a survey which found that 76% of people in the UK have at least one concern about the use of smart controls in the home, varying from hacking to data collection. While smart devices are potentially vulnerable to hacking, smart system manufacturers are constantly developing their offering to ensure their products incorporate the highest levels of security. The ZigBee protocol, used by Megaman across all its smart-enabled devices, is considered to be the most robust in the industry, with encryption features which are extremely difficult to hack. Smart technology has the capability to revolutionise a household, streamlining and simplifying daily tasks, as well as increasing the control a user has over their household appliances. Although often daunting to older users, smart technology is designed with simplicity and convenience in mind. While security is often an issue, spreading public awareness of the developments being made in this area is key. For a simple, safe and compatible system, Ingenium ZB is an ideal entrylevel solution. INTEGRAL LED
TALKING TOUGH Integral LED explains how its new Tough-Shell high-bay range has been designed to offer the best possible lighting for industrial applications.
I
n recent years, LED has begun to answer the tough demands of industrial applications. The lumen levels of high-bay lighting remained the preserve of legacy lighting until a short time ago. Now HID lighting has given way to a new generation of LED luminaires that are able to match the illumination levels of the incandescent and fluorescent era. However, specifiers of warehouses, factories and sports halls are demanding more from their lighting schemes than the cost savings that a switch to LED lighting delivers. One of the benefits of LED light sources is its robustness, which has given rise to a new generation of fixtures that can truly be considered resilient. In the days of bulbs and tubes, a luminaire was only ever as strong as the lightsource. The new Tough-Shell high-bay family from Integral LED has taken up the challenge of being one of the most durable industrial luminaires on the market, and it aims to prove its worth in more ways than saving energy.
Complex needs In the next generation of logistics hub, all activities are scrutinised in terms of effectiveness. These complex and multi-functioning buildings require lighting schemes that are sophisticated, comprehensive and hard-wearing. Hence, the extra benefits of LED lighting have become a priority. Low-maintenance, longevity and its compatibility with digital controls are now taking warehouse lighting to a new level. In the creation of the Tough-Shell range, Integral LED looked to develop the ultimate high-bay for factories, warehouses and indoor sports facilities, by maximising all the benefits of LED. The result is an efficient luminaire that outputs high levels of illumination and maintains optimal workforce conditions, whilst being equal to some of the most demanding environments.
32 | November 2018
Integral LED.indd 32
The Tough-Shell may be tough, but it is also efficient, running 130-150lm/W, which delivers significant savings to the customer. It’s powerful too, delivering up to 36,000lm of light, enough to provide functional lighting levels to a workspace from fixtures located on high. Thanks to innovative heat management design, the Tough-Shell’s aluminium body provides a low optimal operating temperature within a high impact casing. These luminaires are therefore more than a match for the bumps and impacts that could occur in warehouse and factory environments. Impressively, certain models of the high-bay are rated IK10, which is enough to withstand 20 joules of impact. The distinctive conical form factor prevents the accumulation of dust, further cutting down on maintenance. The units are also supplied with an array of fixings made from materials that will resist coastal and other corrosive atmospheres.
says Ricardo Colombo, senior product manager, Integral LED. The new Tough-Shell range can be paired with a movement sensor, and other automated control accessories, to enable maximum savings. Such options include app control via Zigbee for fine-tuning of a scheme. There is a wide range of accessories too, including reflector hoods and glare reducing diffusers, so you can modify the Tough-Shell high-bay to suit the requirements of any installation. A selection of beam angles offer the ability to accurately focus light on key areas and surfaces where accuracy and safety are paramount. Integral LED, integral-led.com
Optimal efficiency “Advances in heat management materials have offered an opportunity to combine optimal LED efficiency with a high impact resistant casing. We set out to deliver a luminaire that was suited to the rigours of the modern factory or logistics hub. These facilities are not only tough, they demand the best in terms of efficiency – so the Tough-Shell is ready to integrate with the most up-to-date digital controls,”

CARBON8
BOX OF TRICKS Carbon8Lighting shines a light on the latest addition to its Discus LED range, the D-Box high-bay fitting.
T
he latest evolution of Carbon8’s successful Discus LED range is the D-Box, where thinking outside the box has resulted in putting a number of clever options inside the box. The key benefit of D-Box is that it offers customers a huge choice of options and functionality, all encased in one easy-to-install, IP65-rated fitting. Carbon8 prides itself in providing customers with exactly what they need for their individual lighting projects. Trevor Jacobs, senior project manager for Carbon8Lighting, explains, “Every project we do is different to the previous one, and our clients are always looking for a simple ‘one stop’ solution, no matter how complex the project may be. To aid this, we have always offered a myriad of options. Everything from corporate colour matched powder coated casings, through to optional emergency and a choice of standalone or linked sensor controls. “Adding numerous options and features to a fitting can be tricky, especially if your customer then wants to install that fitting in a dusty area that they wash down at regular intervals. “We like to look at all project technical hurdles with the ‘it can be done’ approach, rather than thumbing through a catalogue for a while and then, after exhaling a deep sigh, telling the customer that there is nothing in the catalogue that meets their specific requirements.”
The right environment One issue that arises with many lighting projects is the working environment. It’s great offering a range of options on a light fitting, but many of these options require the addition of sizeable and sensitive electronic components, and many of these don’t take kindly to being installed in harsh working environments. To understand suitability of electronic equipment in different working environments, it’s useful to first understand how products are rated. The industry-standard rating for working environment suitability for electronic equipment is the Ingress Protection ‘IP’ rating. This two-
34 | November 2018
Carbon8.indd 34
The Discus D-Box features a robust IP65-rated casing
part rating certifies the level of protection that a product has against solid objects (dust) and water. The rating deals with ingress and not impact, so if you are interested in what happens when a rock is launched at your newly-purchased light fitting, you will need to look at the ‘IK’ rating rather than ‘IP’. The ingress protection rating is important and is displayed as the letters ‘IP’, followed by two numbers – the first referring to protection levels against solid objects and the second one being protection against water ingress. The higher each figure is, the greater the ingress protection. The IP rating is not required to be displayed on a product, but it should always be present in technical details. If you happen to purchase a product with one or several bolt-on options, such as sensors or integrated emergency lighting, the IP rating stated is that of the lowest-rated option/component. There is no point in paying for a light fitting that can withstand a force 10 gale if the optional light sensor that you have added is designed to spend its time in a balmy, dry and dust-free utopia-like environment.
Carbon8’s Discus D-Box high-bay fitting takes all of the optional add-ons that one would wish to add to a fitting, and encases them in one robust IP65rated casing. The D-Box can include a myriad of clever electronics. You could choose a standard emergency version of the D-Box, with integrated battery pack. Alongside this, you may want a choice of standalone occupancy, light level or integrated standalone sensors. Or you may be looking for the ultimate in lighting control, with Carbon8’s LumiNET wireless system. The LumiNET system offers fantastic control and reporting, including a selftesting feature for emergency fittings, where an automated periodic test can be set to run, reporting back on battery life, any electronic component fault, and even indicator light. Couple this with all of the other LumiNET features and the savings can be astronomical. With its IP65 rating, Carbon8 has gone to great lengths to ensure that all of the component options within D-Box are well protected. However, it’s not just a case of keeping things out of D-Box. To ensure longevity of those components, it is important that they remain cool, and the cast aluminium housing acts as a heatsink for everything inside. The aluminium housing also does a great job of blocking radio waves, and this means that if the D-Box has a Carbon8 LumiNET wireless control node installed, it cannot communicate with the outside world. Lifted from the radio-controlled car market, the D-Box is installed with a neat, IP65-rated, aerial. The Discus D-Box high-bay is offered from the 12,000lm 70W, all the way up to the flagship 42,000lm 250W. Carbon8Lighting, carbon8lighting.co.uk
Thinking outside the D-Box For most commercial indoor or outdoor applications, a rating of IP54 was recommended as the industry standard for light fittings. With newer LED lighting, this standard has raised to IP65, and this rating covers most indoor and outdoor working environments.

CP ELECTRONICS
THE RIGHT LIGHT Contractors have more choice than ever to fulfil projects and reach their clients’ desired lighting configurations. However, choosing the right occupancy detector is of utmost importance, explains Phil McBrown, area sales manager at CP Electronics.
W
hether it’s driving down costs, making buildings more sustainable and ‘green’, increasing energy efficiency, or ensuring a safer working environment, we now have a wealth of choice in lighting control solutions to meet these needs. Yet, with more choice comes more complexity that can cloud judgement, leading to systems that may be overcomplicated, hard to manage, and unfit for purpose. This is why knowing which occupancy detector to use and where is vital, as they are essential to lighting controls. Using the wrong occupancy sensors not only leads to wasted energy, but it may even create frustration for occupants and increase maintenance. To ensure this doesn’t happen, it is first best to revisit the differences between the types of occupancy detectors available.
Differences between PIR and microwave
PIR presence detector
Occupancy detectors are mainly available as PIR (passive infrared) sensors, and microwave sensors. Whilst PIRs appear to be the more cost-effective of the two, there must be careful consideration as to whether they are the most suitable solution for the application. A PIR works on body heat and movement when monitoring the detection zone. Conversely, microwave presence detectors work only on movement, and can sense even the slightest of activity. They will also cover a longer range, with fewer sensors required, compared to a PIR detector. To understand the strengths and weaknesses of each, it is helpful to consider a number of different applications.
Open plan offices Microwave presence detector
36 | November 2018
CP Electronics.indd 36
PIR detectors are often seen in open plan offices, and their placement should be dictated by the lighting design.
For example, if the lighting is suspended or surface-mounted with an open soffit, a fully addressable DALI PIR device is often best for flexibility. The device should either be directly within the luminaire, or surface-mounted on the soffit. If the luminaires are suspended, consider whether the obstruction of the luminaire can affect the PIR coverage. If operating daylight dimming functionality, suspended lighting can also affect the measurement of the illuminance levels. Blocking the daylight out will unnecessarily trigger the lights to come on. Microwave detection is not advisable for open plan spaces. Operating on movement only, the lighting can be falsely triggered inadvertantly, such as through vibrations from fan coil units. If the office has a suspended ceiling grid, it is normal practice to connect an extra-low voltage PIR, via a CAT 5e cable to a local LCM. This allows all the devices to be networked and enable communication thoughout.
Educational buildings Educational buildings need to be designed around individual spaces, such as classrooms, corridors, WCs or the main hall. Whichever solution is applied needs to be kept simple for maintenance and cost purposes. Classrooms will be multi-use for general studies and exam conditions. In these circumstances, occupants within the room can be very still, and if a PIR detector is used, the lack of movement can cause the lights to turn off inadvertently. The ideal solution is to use microwave detectors in classrooms, as they pick up the slightest of movements, thus keeping the lights on. However, microwave detectors do also pick up movement through glass. Therefore, when positioning microwave detectors, they should not be facing windows internally or externally. Corridors of various lengths can be controlled by fixed output 230V microwave detection or 230V dimmable microwave detection. Lights can then be dimmed back to a low level during lessons and save energy.
Similarly, WCs can be controlled by 230V PIR detection for a simple on/off solution or 230V dimmable PIR control, so lighting can initially dim back over a shorter time period, before switching off completely. Main halls need more complex solutions, as it is generally a multiuse space with numerous switching arrangements. Microwaves can be mounted on walls, with a metal cage for protection against sporting activities or PIRs at high level, using a suitable highbay detector for adequate coverage.
Warehouse lighting Warehouses encompass multiple designs including microwave detection and PIR detection, but best practice for large warehouse applications is to install a sensor within each light fitting. Whilst this may be perceived as excessive and expensive, it reduces the wiring required. Flexibility also increases, as storage racks may later be installed at 90 degrees to the power supply, while future tenants that want to alter the layout can.
A combined effort In many multi-use buildings, it is never a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. A combination of both PIR and microwave detectors is often better to deliver the most effective blend of lighting control. The primary objective with all applications is to ensure luminaires will switch on and off efficiently, without false triggering, maximising energy and cost savings. REXEL
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER Steve Kearney, business manager, shares insight on the pressures and opportunities in the lighting industry, and highlights what the specialist Rexel Lighting Solutions division can bring to the table.
A
t Rexel Lighting Solutions, we work hand-in-hand with our 250 branches to offer a specialist service, which reglarly involves assisting customers with the transition from old to new technologies, reducing energy usage and improving the quality of lighting control and automation. Our expertise assists our customers in many different ways, and this specialist insight is becoming more vital as our lighting needs change. Since the Energy Related Products directive in 2009, we have seen that many traditional light sources are no longer available. In September 2018, with inefficient mains voltage non-directional halogen being outlawed, LED is fast becoming the only available option, not
only for new installations, but when carrying out lighting maintenance on existing infrastructure. Smart lighting will also expand lighting opportunities, with remote-controlled lighting systems using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. On a larger scale, the development of IoT places lighting fixtures at the heart of the developing connected technologies. These changes mean we can look forward to huge opportunities to enhance existing lighting systems and utilise lighting to benefit us in a myriad of ways. In our latest catalogue, we’re launching some new Wi-Fi smart products, and have integrated these products within our stock offer. As the demands of the connected world increase, we’re delighted to be able to support our customers to develop their projects with lighting that can respond
The lighting industry landscape is changing, opening up a number of new opportunities
to their clients’ needs. We see this as a great opportunity for the industry to look to the future, particularly as new legislation comes fully into play, and to invest in solutions that not only serve a purpose, but enhance those working, operating or living in that environment. Rexel, rexel.co.uk

LEVELLO
MODULAR MADE EASY Levello explains how its modular fixing system makes plaster-in fittings quick and simple to install.
P
laster-in fittings are becoming increasingly popular as more customers desire uncluttered ceilings and clean lines. Most plaster-in products are difficult to install, and are limited in their applications. With different sized ‘cut outs’ for each different type of fitting, mistakes are easy to make and constantly changing the hole-saw can be time consuming. At the heart of what makes Levello different is its patented fixing system. A housing is fitted permanently into the ceiling and different styles of fittings or ‘inserts’ are placed into the housing and held in by magnets. A front plate completes the flat finish. Levello is versatile, allowing the user to change a downlight to a pendant, a spotlight or even blank-out the position completely, in seconds. Just decide if the product needs to be firerated or not and the choice is endless.
Simple installation The ‘first fix’ housing is one size for all of Levello’s products, reducing errors and speeding up the cutting of the holes. Housing installation is simple; drill a 62mm hole, fit the supply cable to the Levello connector, push the housing into the hole and pop in the decorator’s card – and the ceiling is ready for plastering and painting. The decorator’s cards stop the housing getting filled with plaster and paint. The Levello painter and decorator cards have been specifically designed to grip the inside of the housing, ensuring that they
Housing installed
do not fall out during decorating. Levello supplies a plastering and a painting decorator’s card with each housing and recommends that they are removed when the plaster is green, or the paint is not completely dry, to ensure the perfect finish. The ‘second fix’ stage is even easier, as all Levello products are supplied with connectors factory-fitted, so second fix is literally ‘plug and play’, and its magnetic fixing system means that the ‘insert’ is simply popped into the housing.
Stunning ceilings With plastering disk
Plastered
One of Levello’s aims is to make ceilings look beautiful. Levello has designed all of its products to have as small a visual impact as possible, giving an almost zero sight line. One of the problems with most ceiling fittings is that the metal or plastic of the fitting ages differently to the paint on the ceiling, which gives an aged appearance to the room. To ensure that the desired finish is achieved over the longer term, Levello offers paintable front plates with practically all of their products to ensure that the colour of the visible part of the fitting not only blends in with the ceiling but ages gracefully too.
Versatile style The modular nature of Levello’s products means changing client requirements are no longer a problem, as the ‘insert’ can be swapped out in seconds for another type of fitting. The Flush range of downlights can cater for almost any installation. The Low Profile products have been designed for ceiling voids where there is minimal space, the Deep range are stylish recessed fittings with many different baffle colours to chose from and the Directional products can tilt by 35° and rotate by 360° and are perfect for wall washes or feature lighting. All of the Flush range can be IP 65-rated with minimum fuss and no visual difference to the other products. A wide variety of light sources are available as Levello has designed its products around the industry standard 50mm diameter (MR16 / GU10) lamp style. From a GU10 version where the contractor can select the GU10 of choice, to our range of high CRI light engines where quality of light is important – like
the recently completed Michelin-starred Outlaws Restaurant at the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge. Should the customer require other styles of lighting, such as surface spotlight or pendants, these can be easily and quickly installed into the housing. The only limitation with pendants is that the fitting must not weigh more that 5Kg – similar to a ceiling rose. There is an ever-expanding range of alarms and detectors covering many control systems. The fire detection range is incredibly discrete with the largest alarm having a diameter less than 65mm. The presence detection range covers Lutron, Casambi, DALI and even 1-10v systems, with the detector head being 1020mm in diameter.
Simple to maintain Even with modern LED lamps, changing a lamp becomes inevitable. Levello completely eliminates all the inconvenience of changing a lamp whilst maintaining the integrity and finish of the ceiling. Levello products are manufactured in the UK and supplied complete with simple installation instructions printed on the lid. The factory assembled connectors ensure speedy installation and testing, enabling the user to swap their fitting with ease and ensures the safety of the installation. Products can be supplied as ‘first fix’ and ‘second fix’ kits, reducing the risk of lost or damaged products on-site, while allowing last minute changes to be accommodated with ease. Levello’s customers expect the best finish in all architectural needs. Levello is a luxury lighting system which provides so many unique possibilities to everyone’s lighting schemes.
