ctober brought with it an important announcement from the JIB, in the form of the new ECS Registered Electrician status. The new scheme is aimed at recognising electricians who are qualified to both NVQ Level 3 and the current edition of the Wiring Regulations. Alongside the new status, the JIB also launched the ECS Check, a system that allows clients and main contractors to verify the skills of electrical staff. The new status is voluntary, and its aim is to boost the credibility of not just the individual electrician, but also their company. Will the new status change the way electricians work in the future? LuxLive 2017, which will be lighting up ExCel London on November 15-16, will also be looking to the future of the sector. In this issue, ECN takes a look at some of the highlights that can be expected from the two-day event. The annual show is now in its seventh year, and as well as the usual showcase of new innovations and seminars led by industry leaders, this year’s LuxLive will turn its spotlight to the role of connected lighting. The smart home/building is more and more becoming a recurring theme within the industry, as the world around us becomes increasingly connected. INDUSTRY NEWS CP ELECTRONICS WINS LITTLE BRITAIN CHALLENGE CUP 2017 Lighting controls manufacturer CP Electronics has been crowned the winner of the Little Britain Challenge Cup (LBCC) 2017. Marking the 30th anniversary of the annual charity event, the largest of its kind in Europe, this year’s regatta brought together several hundred participants from across the construction industry. Participants included a selection of contractors, property developers, architects and engineers. The event has raised more than £1.25 million for charity since its inception. The team from CP Electronics won its class and the event overall. “We’re hugely proud to have won this event, which was made possible by all the effort and hard work put in by Team CP. Our thanks goes out to all those people who contributed both on and off the yacht,“ explained Marcus Martin, managing director at CP Electronics. The aim of the two-day event, which takes place around the Solent on the south coast, is to raise money for a number of charities, including the 1851 Trust, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, the Cirdan Sailing Trust, and many more. In total LBCC ’17 raised £25,000 for worthy causes. Marcus added, “LBCC is a great way for us to get together and build relationships with colleagues and partners from around the industry and has become an important fixture in our social calendar. We’re extremely honoured to have been involved, particularly as the proceeds are helping to improve the lives of real people.”
TWENTY PERCENT OF UK ELECTRICAL CABLE IS DANGEROUS, SAYS PRYSMIAN GROUP Cable manufacturer Prysmian Group is campaigning to make the manufacturing and importing of substandard electrical cable into the UK illegal. According to the company, figures from the Approved Cable Initiative (ACI) indicate that 20% of all the cable in the UK is substandard, non-approved or counterfeit, and the Home Office Fire Statistics for 2015/2016 states that some 4,000 fires in buildings each year are down to faulty electrics. “Properly manufactured and tested electrical cable is very safe”, said Llyr Roberts, CEO of Prysmian in the UK, “but cable that is substandard or is being used in the wrong situation is a real hazard that can electrocute and cause fires. “For many years, we have been calling for appropriate legislation to prevent substandard cable – typically manufactured abroad – being brought into the UK supply chain. We support the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) and actively promote the Approved Cables Initiative, both of which have been established and supported by the cable industry to try and stop dangerous cable getting into UK homes.” The new European Construction Product Regulation (CPR), which came into effect in July 2017, is a step in the right direction, said the company. CPR makes it a legal requirement for cable sold in the UK to carry documentary evidence from the manufacturer identifying exactly which standards it conforms to, but this regulation does not apply to all types of cable. There is a clear need for straightforward legislation that makes it illegal to import, sell or install cable that is not manufactured and tested to British Standards, urges Prysmian Group.
REXEL TEAM COMPLETES CYCLE CHALLENGE FOR CHARITY A team of 11 cyclists from Rexel has successfully taken part in a 400mile charity bike ride which saw them pedal from Bordeaux to Paris. The charity challenge, which raised over £30,000 for the Electrical Industries Charity and MacMillan Cancer Support, took place over four days and saw each individual team member cycle 100 miles each day. The Rexel UK team, comprising eleven cyclists and two support crew, included purchasing director, Peter Elliott; corporate sales director, Chris Gibson and Phil Wyatt, regional sales director, North. Setting off last month, the team reached the company’s global headquarters in Paris in just four days. “Cycling over 400 miles was a real test of grit and determination, and far more of a challenge than we ever anticipated,” said Peter Elliott, speaking at the finish line. “Prior to setting off, we knew the mileage would be testing but the two 12-hour days cycling 125 miles really took it out of us physically and mentally. However, knowing the level of support behind us and being able to raise such a huge amount for two charities which carry out some incredible work made it all worthwhile. “Our customer base, including the suppliers and manufacturers we work with, have been incredibly generous, digging deep in order to support these two charities which are close to many people’s hearts, especially within the electrical industry.” As part of the challenge, Rexel Group, France and UK also pledged to donate €3,000, which meant the team was able to exceed its original target of £30,000.
SCHNEIDER STUDY REVEALS STRUGGLE TO BE SUSTAINABLE Schneider Electric has launched a report that reveals 87% of UK organisations surveyed find themselves torn between doing the right thing for the environment and meeting the business objectives of today. The secret to sustainable success study has found that while businesses understand the need to become more sustainable in the face of increasing energy demands, nine in 10 UK organisations are primarily focused on the short-term economic outlook with only one in 10 focused on delivering transformational change. According to the report, energy consumption is expected to increase by a factor of 1.5 in the next 40 years. To meet climate targets, CO2 emissions must be halved, says Schneider Electric. Although 79% of organisations feel confident that they can overcome the challenges presented by the increased demand for energy and create a sustainable business for the future, only 13% feel well prepared to address the rapid growth in energy demands. When looking at how they can address these coming trends, 71% of decision-makers believe they will need to go through a period of tougher economic times to deliver a better, more sustainable business. The report illustrates that the mindset around energy usage needs to fundamentally change to deliver against sustainability objectives. According to the report, almost half of the organisations surveyed are targeting this change through innovation projects – whether it be to use less energy by finding efficiencies in operations, embracing robotics to address the skills gap or adding sensors to identify maintenance needs before they occur. Additionally, 70% of the businesses surveyed are actively considering digitising operations moving forward. This consideration is triggered by a reduction in energy usage (89.%) and overhead costs (89.9%). Another 69% of the decision-makers within these businesses expect to see a noticeable rate of return for digital investments within the first 12 months.
LOST TEST DATA DELAYS PAYMENT FOR CABLE INSTALLERS, SAYS IDEAL NETWORKS Poor test data sharing processes are resulting in lost test results, delayed job completions and cash flow problems, says a new white paper by IDEAL Networks that explores issues within the data cable installation and testing industry. “Over the past 18 months, we’ve conducted detailed interviews with cable installers to identify the common frustrations and challenges they are facing and have compiled our findings into a white paper,” explained Tim Widdershoven, global marketing manager from IDEAL Networks. “We’ve uncovered that many businesses are lacking efficient processes when it comes to reporting on certification jobs, and this is costing them time and money.” According to the white paper, in many cases, installers at the job site conduct the necessary tests for certification, but then must send the certifier unit back to the office for the data to be transferred. The customer can only be given a warranty once the certifier has been received, the data has been transferred and the required reporting completed. “Worryingly, the time to complete this process – from testing with a certifier to invoicing the customer – can be up to two weeks,” said Tim. “These difficulties and delays transferring test data to the office postpone project completion and, in turn payment. This invariably hurts cash flow.”

OLYMPIC MEDALLIST TOPS THE BILL AT AINTREE EVENT FROM NICEIC AND ELECSA
The Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) has supported a BBC investigation which has reignited a seven-year hunt for more than three million metres of substandard cable product that remains unaccounted for in UK buildings. In 2010, an ACI investigation led to more than 11m metres of cable, manufactured by Turkish company, Atlas Kablo, being recalled from the UK market, following the suspension of two of its product certification licences by British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC). According to ACI, reports of faulty cabling from concerned contractors earlier in 2010 led it to test samples of product from the Turkish cable manufacturer. The samples were found to have insufficient copper leading to high conductor resistance and did not comply with appropriate British Standards. Independent testing by BASEC later confirmed this, leading to the suspension of Atlas Kablo’s BASEC licence for a serious decline in quality across its range of products. Last week, a BBC report highlighted that the HSE decided not to issue a compulsory recall notice, instead relying upon a voluntary approach. This meant only a proportion of the cable was recovered and destroyed and the unaccounted-for cable was enough to fully rewire 8,000 houses, electrical experts have told the BBC. Subsequent market surveillance by the ACI led to stocks of the substandard cable being found on sale in Homebase, Wilco and Focus DIY. ACI intervention led to the stocks being removed from sale. The Atlas Kablo cable is marked with the manufacturer’s identification `Atlas Kablo’ and carries a 2010 manufacturing date and the TSE ‹HAR› approval mark. The cable sheathing colours included white, cream, yellow and blue and marking may be embossed or printed. Many of the cables are also marked with British designations such as 3183Y and BS6500.
Olympic medallist and motivational speaker Kriss Akabusi will be the keynote speaker at NICEIC ELECSA Live North, held at Aintree Racecourse on November 23. Kriss will talk about his own athletics career, including winning the 400m hurdles gold medal in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and the bronze in the 1992 Olympic Games, where he set a British record that still stands today. NICEIC’s Darren Staniforth and Alan Wells will also be on hand to inform delegates about the proposed changes to the upcoming 18th edition and the recent document for public comment, while the IET’s Mark Coles will provide an overview on Part 8 of the regulations. Other prominent sessions include author James Dewane advising contractors on how to attract and retain customers and Chris Ashworth from Competitive Advantage Consultancy, who will present new research into how much contractors should be charging for their work. Professor Jim Al-Khalili, OBE, will also present a session on the history of electricity, and the impact it has had on how we live. Power quality specialist REO UK is urging businesses to reconsider their relationship with renewable energy. The company has released a whitepaper exploring the state of the renewable energy sector and argues that the time is ripe for organisations to think about how they can overcome problems such as the changes to feed-in tariffs, power quality problems, planning permission and the threat from cheap imports of renewable technology. The paper explores the growth of the renewable sector, including recent figures indicating that 2016 was a record year for the installation of renewable power. According to the paper, a total of 161GW was added to the world’s capacity, with solar power leading the way. The paper looks at some of the alternative schemes and models of renewable-energy sourcing available to
businesses. It also explores the ongoing challenge of planning permission, power quality and the threat of cheap imports of heavily subsidised renewable solar panels from China. “Along with a change of approach to renewable energy models, business leaders must also consider the quality of the renewable equipment they buy,” explained Steve Hughes, managing director of REO UK. “We’ve written this whitepaper to inform business leaders thinking about adopting renewable technologies as part of the wider initiative to go green. LeaseVan.co.uk has launched a contest to find the UK’s brainiest van driver. The company has created the competition in an effort to dispel the stereotypical image of the ‘White Van Man’, an outdated and negative image of drivers. The stereotype may be deterring some people from starting their own businesses, says the company. Through the competition, LeaseVan.co.uk aims to celebrate the many thousands of British van drivers who follow intellectual pursuits. Certsure has become a member of the Institute of Customer Services (ICS), joining companies such as BMW, Virgin and Sainsbury’s. The move is part of Certsure’s effort to deliver the best service it can provide. ICS is a membership organisation that works with brands to improve the overall customer experience. It provides an individual assessment of an organisation’s culture and approach to customer service. Kate Birtles, director of customer experience at Certsure, which operates the NICEIC and ELECSA brands, said of the membership, “This is our commitment to deliver an ongoing, improved service. “Over the next two years we want to achieve ICS’ ServiceMark accreditation – a national standard recognising an organisation’s achievement in customer service, and its commitment to upholding those standards.” ServiceMark is based on customer satisfaction feedback and an assessment of employee engagement within an organisation. The process helps organisations understand how effective their customer service strategy is, and identifies areas for improvement. “In 2014 we launched our customer charter which was a promise to measure and report back on our customer service levels,” added Kate. “We now want to take the next step. This is our commitment to listen to customers’ concerns and identify any areas which might require improving.”

JOHN LEWIS ‘HOME SOLUTIONS’ SERVICE LAUNCHED High street department store John Lewis has announced a partnership with NICEIC to roll out a new ‘Home Solutions’ service to its customers. The scheme will be offered in a number of locations across the UK. The service will provide customers with the ability to get in contact with professional tradespeople who have been thoroughly vetted, interviewed and assessed. Earlier this year, the service was trialled in Milton Keynes, and will now begin operating in six other locations – including Cardiff, Bristol, Newport, Bath, Taunton and Gloucester. John Lewis approached NICEIC last year to find electricians for the launch of the scheme. Several NICEIC registered contractors signed up to take part and a rigorous recruitment process was put in place, which included interviewing tradespeople, background checks, and assessments of work they had done previously. John Lewis customers will be able to hire plumbers, electricians, decorators and other trades through the app, website and call centre-based service. The service aims to create more opportunities for registered contractors.
A Kentec fire control panel is helping protect new temporary buildings at Welcome Break’s M3 southbound Fleet Services on the Surrey/Hampshire border, erected following a fire in December 2016 that almost completely destroyed the former services building. LUX365, a new professional lighting retailer, was launched in October, aimed at meeting the demand for LEDs in the UK’s lighting market. The company has been created by a group of lighting industry veterans and is backed by global lighting specialist, OSRAM. The scheme is completely free for contractors to sign up to, and offers them the opportunity to grow their business as well as be associated with the wellknown high street brand. “We are delighted to be working with John Lewis on the electrical side of this initiative,” said NICEIC CEO Emma Clancy. “Home Solutions brings together two trusted brands and will provide further opportunities for our contractors to win more work. “John Lewis is also keen to get female tradespeople on board so NICEIC’s Jobs for the Girls campaign was of great interest to them.”
A report by MoneySuperMarket has revealed that the UK public has concerns about the smart home revolution, despite the possible cost savings. The study states 76% of Brits are ‘fearful’ of the smart homes concept, with unapproved data collection cited as the greatest worry. The LIA is offering a service to carry out UMS measurements at its laboratory in Telford. The LIA laboratory works closely with ELEXON to consult on requirements for luminaires, and can can carry out UMSUG measurements at the laboratory or send engineers to site to do the testing.

COMPREHENSIVE CABLING Marco’s wide range of range of cable management solutions have recently met the exact specification of an industrial conversion in Camberley.
T
hrough an ongoing drive to innovate and stay one step ahead of market demand, Marco has developed and today manufactures a complete and comprehensive product range. Customers are now able to meet all of their cable containment needs through Marco, including supporting accessories. The conversion of a vast 15,000 sqft industrial unit in Camberley for a pharmaceutical manufacturing business has seen contractor Jonathan Jones Electrical Services utilise a complete range of Marco’s cable containment products. Marco area sales manager, Luke Kellaher, has worked closely alongside JJES director, Jon Jones, during design and installation to ensure the exact specification was met and supplied. “We have worked with JJES on several schemes, however, this was the largest and perhaps most complex to-date,” says Luke. The warehouse was previously empty and required a full programme of works to convert the unit into a high-tech facility for the new tenant, Microgen Bioproducts. “With a two-storey office at the front of the building, the remaining space was to be converted into units with suspended ceilings and LED lighting throughout. “JJES has utilised Marco Elite 3 in all offices and labs with additional dado trunking in the offices at skirting height. Power poles were used in the centre of the laboratory space providing connectivity at a central point for the various work units. A further Marco specification, via the firm’s bench trunking, offered the perfect solution for all desktop cable containment. “Marco’s steel wire cable tray has also been utilised throughout, providing housing for both power and data cables. The contractor used a range of supporting accessories including brackets and quick-
fit accessories. In total JJES used nearly 500m of steel wire cable tray and over 350m of uPVC trunking.” The 13-week project was delivered successfully, on time and within budget, providing a high-tech facility in terms of aesthetics and functionality. Jon Jones led the contracting team. He added, “I’ve been using Marco products at JJES for well over 10 years, having recognised the value from a very early stage. “There are several benefits of working with Marco, ranging from delivery – all products arrive on site within two days – to the standard and quality of the products themselves. “During this project, the products have been delivered on-site in phases, which helps us in terms of cash-flow, whilst also ensuring the site team are able to work in

a clean environment, without unnecessary obstacles in their way. We’re also able to source all of our cable containment needs from under one roof with Marco, guaranteeing a full specification in terms of both steel wire cable tray and uPVC trunking. “Both myself and the guys on-site undoubtedly prefer working with the Marco products. We particularly like the Elite 3 which offers greater data capacity and deeper bends than competitor products, which is particularly useful when walls aren’t flush. FLEXICON PROTECTS ELIZABETH LINE STATIONS’ POWER AND DATA CABLING Flexible conduit systems from Flexicon will be protecting critical power and data cabling for the 10 new Elizabeth line stations, currently being built by Crossrail Ltd. Cable protection from Flexicon will be used for lighting, small power, CCTV and audio systems in both the general public and back office areas and for the Platform Edge Screens (PES) that separate the station from the track area. The main requirements for the cable protection system are to protect cabling from vandalism, provide ingress protection of up to IP68 and meet the stringent fire safety standards for sub-surface rail installations. For public facing areas the conduit also had to meet the aesthetic requirements of the installation. Back office areas use FSS stainless steel corrugated conduit, which combines low fire hazard performance with an ingress protection of IP68 and corrosion resistance. Public facing areas use either FSSBRD, which has a stainless steel over braid for added aesthetic appeal, or a specially developed all metallic black stainless-steel conduit called FSS black which is being used on the PES. “Power and data is vital for operational efficiency and critical safety systems. Cable protection is important not just from day one but for the lifetime of the installation,” said Daniel Tokoro, senior project engineer and package manager for the electrical installation for NG Bailey at Farringdon station.
THAMES TOWER READING’S FIRST ‘WIRED CERTIFIED’ OFFICE BUILDING Developed by the joint venture between Landid and Brockton Capital, Thames Tower is now the first Wired Certified office development in Reading, after the building was awarded a Gold rating by WiredScore. The Wired Certification is a commercial real estate rating scheme that champions cuttingedge technology and rates the infrastructure, connectivity and technological capacity of commercial buildings. Thames Tower’s Gold rating has been achieved due the building’s diverse access points, free Wi-Fi in common areas for occupiers and guests, mobile phone signal throughout the building and BT Openreach access, to name a few features. The project, designed by dn-a architects, saw the original 10-storey 1970s building stripped back to its frame, floor plates were extended and four floors added – creating an additional 62,000 sqft of space. The 15-storey tower comprises 195,000 sqft of design-led contemporary office space, with panoramic glazing providing large volumes of natural light throughout the day. A 4,000 sqft rooftop lounge, terrace and garden was added, providing breakout space for occupiers, event space and a communal bar and café, including an in-house barista, within a winter garden setting.
ENVIROVENT VENTILATES THIRTEEN HOMES Ventilation manufacturer EnviroVent has secured a five-year agreement to provide both Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) systems and its Filterless Infinity Fans for homes by property developer Thirteen. EnviroVent will install PIV units or Infinity Fans on any properties that are having energy efficient upgrades, such as External Wall Insulation (EWI) schemes. By contracting with EnviroVent, Thirteen, which has a stock of around 34,000 properties, is aiming to provide ventilation that will protect residents’ health and the fabric of buildings. The PIV units will be fitted in the central hallway or in the loft space, providing whole house ventilation. These units are designed to take advantage of the benefits of solar gain from within the loft space, to result in a relative saving of around 150W per day in an average modern family home, according to EnviroVent.
XPELAIR PROVIDES A BREATH OF FRESH AIR Xpelair has retrofitted a two-bedroom bungalow in Peterborough with its Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, Natural Air 180, to provide the home with fresh air. The Natural Air 180 extracts stale air and moisture from dwelling wet rooms while resupplying habitable rooms with filtered fresh air, transferring heat from the extracted air during the process. Paul Johnson used Xpelair Ventimiser in the renovation of his two-bedroom home. The unit is a demand control device with a temperature sensor fitted to the shower’s hot water pipe and a current sensor fitted over the live conductor to the cooker. This enables the Ventimiser to automatically boost the Natural Air 180 fans whenever it detects that the cooker or shower is in use. In addition, it has momentary boost switches located in the bathroom and kitchen to provide a manual boost control option timed for 25 minutes at the press of a button. The installation took two days to complete and it was carried out by VentfiltersRus, whose engineers are all BPEC registered. The Natural Air 180 has been designed for easy installation and comes in in two sections rather than one, in an effort to make it more portable.

CONTRACT NEWS GAIA HEATS LISTED CHAPEL CONVERSION Housing developer Beechcroft is using Gaia’s lowtemperature hot water underfloor heating (UFH) system to create a warm, comfortable living space inside a former chapel. Forming part of Beechcroft’s Fitzroy Gate development in old Isleworth, West London, the chapel was designed in 1901 by architects Pugin & Pugin in the Gothic Revival style. Beechcroft’s Special Projects team spent months on the careful renovation and conversion of the chapel to create four luxurious new homes which retain nearly all the original features, including stained glass and vaulted ceilings. “Conventional radiators were quickly ruled out as a suitable heating solution due to the unique layout of the interior,” said Beechcroft commercial director Ben Goss. “Some of the ceilings are 12m high – all the heat would have disappeared straight up into the roof-space.”

SPIE COMPLETES REFURBISHMENT CONTRACT FOR SIDNEY WEBB HOUSE SPIE UK was awarded a £6.4m contract with Unite Students, a provider of student accommodation in the UK, for the refurbishment of Sidney Webb House, a student accommodation building at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). As principal contractor and designer, SPIE has been responsible for design, procurement and site management as well as the removal and fit-out of the new internal fabrics, furniture and fixings, and mechanical and electrical services. Due to the time frame of 11 weeks, SPIE developed a complete single source solution for fast track fit-out that included innovative energy saving and engineering solutions. Using SPIE’s unique approach, the programme’s design, survey and procurement was completed while the team simultaneously prepared the site logistics and terms of engagement. As a result, SPIE carried out an on-site strip out and refurbishment of 454 bedrooms and bathrooms as well as 72 kitchens over the period. As part of the work, SPIE provided first-fix services – electrical distribution, light fittings, pipework, M&E services, 2,400 new LED light fittings, four new modularised air source heat pumps at roof level, new hot water pipework distribution, fire alarms and electrical distribution panels. SPIE also carried out surveys and risk assessments while working in parallel. As a result of SPIE’s new delivery model, Unite is set to receive cost saving benefits for the foreseeable future, driven by SPIE’s specialist multi-technical know-how.

M&E contractor Aberla has secured the development of the famous Black Friar pub, at the junction of Trinity Way and Blackfriars Road. The project will see the transformation of the historic Grade II listed building into high specification office accommodation, including a management suite. Appointed to deliver the mechanical and electrical upgrade works, Aberla has installed a new heating system, including boilers, trench heating and ventilation plus a full electrical rewire consisting of consumer units, security and fire systems. The pub, which dates back to 1886, has been boarded up for a number of years. The transformation of the pub is the cornerstone to the wider Trinity residential development which will consist of 380 flats in two blocks.

CONTRACT NEWS HIMA SIGNS RAILWAY INDUSTRY CONTRACT IN INDONESIA Independent provider of smart safety solutions, HIMA, has signed a contract with Indonesian rail supplier PT Len Industri (Persero). The Indonesian company is state-owned and produces railway systems, including railway signal systems for the native rail industry. Under the contract, HIMA is to upgrade the safety technology at 25 railway stations in Indonesia. This is HIMA’s most significant contract in the rail industry in APAC so far. Last year, HIMA expanded its Asia-Pacific business and established a new regional headquarters in Singapore. HIMA’s Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) safety controllers are designed to be a cost effective option which also comply with the stringent SIL 4 level in accordance with CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation. A major factor in awarding the €1.8m project to HIMA was that HIMA equipment uses open source communication architecture, making their controllers simple to integrate with other equipment and to configure, and because of the company’s total focus on safety technology. This open architecture allows PT Len Industri to integrate HIMA’s technology with its own legacy systems and with technology from other vendors. HIMA has developed COTS open architecture safety controllers so that system integrators and end-customer can integrate the technology into their own safety systems, independent of other providers. The controllers are designed to be easily installed and quickly supplied with spare parts. Due to its modular design, COTS equipment allows users to scale their safety system as needed and to easily meet future requirements.
GUERNSEY FIRE & RESCUE RECOMMENDS AICO Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service is fitting Aico Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms into homes on the island as part of a campaign run by the Service to ensure homes and businesses are made safe. Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service conducts a risk assessment of every property before deciding which alarms to fit, also taking into account the occupiers. “Those considered most at risk, including the young and the elderly, may require extra protection so we will fit additional alarms in those properties,” said Martin Lucas, head of fire safety at Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service. “We have been running a free smoke alarm programme for eight years – thanks to sponsorship from prominent island companies – but decided to swap to Aico following issues with the alarms we had been fitting. “This year we are really pleased to be able to include CO alarms for the very first time. These will primarily be allocated to people over 65, who are known to be most at risk from CO poisoning. We’ve already seen a huge uptake of CO alarms in the short time we have been offering them.” A wide range of Aico alarms and accessories are now being offered free of charge by the Service including 10-year optical smoke alarms, CO alarms and alarm kits for the deaf and hard of hearing. Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service is also keen to promote good practice when it comes to alarm installation, having hosted a large Aico Expert Installer session which trained over 50 people from the Service, electricians and electrical wholesalers.

CONTRACT NEWS LUCECO LIGHTS HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ESTATE Luceco and Oakray have provided energy efficient LED lighting solutions for prominent buildings within the Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) Estate, including a major office lighting upgrade at HCC’s Farnham and Robertson House Buildings in Stevenage. The extensive open plan office facilities were originally lit with 55W PL compact fluorescent luminaires. To meet their objectives, Hertfordshire County Council required a lighting refurbishment where significant cost savings and return on investment could be demonstrated, as well as energy efficiencies made to lower CO2 emissions and a total reduction in maintenance. HCC also recognised the benefits of good lighting
and providing ambient surroundings that stimulates a feeling of wellbeing and motivation in the workplace. Luceco was chosen by Oakray as the LED luminaire supplier due to the diversity of the product range, both internal and external and the dramatic reduction in energy consumption. Installed by Oakray, the high efficiency backlit panels offered
an efficacy of 147 Llm/cW. These qualities allowed for a sizeable reduction in the number of fittings helping to provide additional ROI to the project. Platinum downlights were installed in corridors and circulation spaces providing a retrofit replacement for compact fluorescent luminaires, offering running cost savings of up to 80%.
SMITH BROTHERS POWERS UP THE UK’S BIGGEST BATTERY Power engineering specialist Smith Brothers has contributed its high voltage expertise to powering up the UK’s largest standalone battery storage site. Acting as the Independent Connections Provider (ICP) for the 15MW Lockleaze Fast Frequency Response (FFR) facility in Bristol, the Elland-based firm was enlisted by contractor Metka-EGN to carry out the high voltage electrical connections and substation construction. Commissioned by clean energy giant Hazel Capital in partnership with Noriker Power, the project was developed by renewables expert Aura Power. As part of the contract, Smith Brothers was tasked with the design, project management and delivery of the 33kV infrastructural connection to the battery storage facility. The point of connection (POC) was close to the site at the existing Western Power Distribution (WPD) Lockleaze BSP 132/33kV substation, and the firm carried out 80m of trenching works to install three single core 33kV 185mm2 CU EPR cables. The 12-strong team was also responsible for the civil design and construction of the 33kV Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) substation for WPD, along with the design, supply, install and commission of the HV internal equipment – including a twopanel NXPlus Siemens switchboard. Further to undertaking the contestable works as the ICP, the electrical engineering firm also provided a containerised solution on the private side of the project. This involved fitting a nine-panel switchboard as well as installing and commissioning the interconnecting cables between the private and DNO sides.
MIDDLESEX AEROSPACE SAVES ENERGY WITH GOODLIGHT LED LIGHTING Goodlight has announced that Middlesex Aerospace, a manufacturer of aerospace engineering components, has made between 50-80% energy savings following the replacement of their old fluorescent lighting with energy efficient, low maintenance LED tube lighting from the Goodlight range. Pay-back on the installation is on target and is expected to be achieved within 18 months. The company adopted Goodlight LED lighting to meet their commitment towards ISO14001.
Installation of the LED lights was carried out over the weekends to limit the impact on production times and reduce disruption for staff. Middlesex Aerospace specified Goodlight GX1 Plus (150W) LED high bays, G5 LED battens, T8 LED tubes and LED ceiling panels for its main production factory and inspection area at the 50,000 sqft manufacturing site in Hampshire, replacing energy hungry fluorescent lighting.
John Masey, senior buyer at Middlesex Aerospace said, “Since the installation, we have been very impressed with the light quality which is evenly distributed over the factory floor. The new Goodlight LED lighting is flicker free, therefore reducing eye strain, has low UV emissions and promotes performance amongst our staff, greatly improving the working environment. In addition, we are making substantial energy savings and have eliminated maintenance costs.”
TANSUN KEEPS PARISHIONERS WARM Infrared heating manufacturer Tansun has helped to provide extra heating for a church congregation at the Church of St Mary, a Grade II listed building in Limington, near Yeovil, Somerset. The church congregation was in need of a permanent heating solution to keep them warm during the winter months. They needed an efficient system that didn’t take hours to preheat and that blended in with the surroundings as much as possible. “The heaters are cost friendly and easy to use. We just simply switch them on when the congregation comes into the church, then switch off after. No more waiting around for hours to pre-heat the church to a comfortable temperature,” said the church’s vicar. Members chose ivory Monaco infrared heaters for the church, which are quartz heaters in the Tansun Ambient series. The Monaco provides a high level of heat output with much less glare than a standard powerful infrared heater. Six Monaco triple heaters, two Monaco double heaters and one Monaco single heater were installed at St Mary’s and matched the interior style of the church.

WINNER OF ECA EDMUNDSON AWARD 2017 ANNOUNCED Jordan Bancroft has won the 2017 ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award, earning him recognition as one of the country’s leading electrotechnical and engineering services apprentices. The 23-year old works for Imtech Engineering Services in Nottingham and was trained by JTL. During the judging process, the panel of industry experts said they believed Jordan would make an excellent ambassador for the ECA and the industry over the next 12 months. “It’s an absolute honour for me to be recognised as ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year and to become an industry ambassador,” said Jordan. “The training and practical experience I have received from Imtech and JTL has been first class and it’s a privilege to represent both organisations,” said Jordan of the award.” Jordan overcame fierce competition from the other finalists, and has won prizes that include £1,500 and a study tour to Limoges, France, sponsored by Legrand. The three runners-up, who each won £750 and a state-of-the-art toolkit, are Christopher Musson of David Pearce Electrical Contractors, Charlie Nicholson of NRT Building Services and Ashley Osbourne of Playfords Ltd. Jordan now works for Imtech as a trainee engineer, and has also been studying for a BTEC in Building Services. He was part of the Imtech team working on the Olympic Stadium Transformation Project, which converted the stadium into a multiuse sporting venue, including becoming the home of West Ham United FC.
Aico has brought its Mobile Training & Demonstration Units to Scotland for the first time since launching the vehicles earlier this year. Mobile Units were sent out to spend a day at both electrical wholesaler Scott Coppola in Edinburgh as well as Port of Leith Housing Association. The units are designed to enable Aico to deliver smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm product and technology information at a location convenient to customers. The units also offer the company’s CPD-accredited Expert Installer training. Expert Installer is a modular training scheme created by Aico to ensure everyone involved in domestic alarm specification and installation has all the information they need, from standards and regulations, alarm system design and installation to specific technologies. The scheme recently received its CPD accreditation, allowing Aico to provide
customers with CPD training free of charge. Expert Installer training can be held at customers’ premises, at Aico’s Centre of Excellence or in one of Aico’s new Mobile Training & Demonstration Units. “The CPD training for contractors was the big draw. It’s difficult to get people to give up their time, but the training is something the industry needs,” said Darren Coppola, manager at Scott Coppola, of the training being offered to the wholesaler’s staff. A range of staff at the Port of Leith Housing Association also benefitted from the training units. Attendees included both internal staff, who were given an introductory course on Aico products, as well as contractors and support staff such as facilities managers, assisted living managers and general maintenance personnel. Heads of department, gas teams and other interested parties were also invited to attend.

TRAINING UNIVERSITY OF DERBY STEM CENTRE GETS ROYAL RECEPTION The University of Derby’s new £12m Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) centre was officially opened by HRH The Earl of Wessex on Wednesday September 27. The new 4,200 sqm STEM centre, part funded by a £5m grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), provides an extension of computer studios and specialist facilities for engineering, technology and computing students. It has been specially designed to enhance applied practical teaching in mechanical, motorsport, manufacturing and civil engineering to support the University’s new programmes, while upgrading and extending facilities for electrical and electronics engineering and computer networking. The centre, based at the University’s Markeaton Street site, opened its doors to students this month, allowing them to benefit from solutions-focused and industry-linked projects, and enabling them to develop the technical and professional skills required for their careers after graduation. The building, designed by architects CPMG and built by contractor Willmott Dixon, was constructed to meet Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) ‘Very Good’ standard, and the architectural design enhances and complements the landscape between the two buildings. His Royal Highness was given a tour of the building, and met with staff, students and representatives from industry before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the opening.

NEW ‘ECS CHECK’ SERVICE LAUNCHED BY THE JIB A new system that allows clients and main contractors to verify the skills of electrical staff has been launched by the JIB. ECS Check is an online portal that provides instant information on the ECS cardholder status of those personnel sent to work on any particular site. Electrical contractors can also use the system to showcase their workforce during tenders or projects, highlighting the skills and qualifications of their team. This new service, available across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, has been introduced to give clients confidence that their contracts are being carried out by fully qualified electrical personnel. It complements the launch of the new ECS Registered Electrician status, also launched by the JIB in October, to recognise electricians who are qualified to both NVQ Level 3 and the current edition of the Wiring Regulations. All eligible ECS cardholders are being notified of the opportunity to become an ECS Registered Electrician. RAISING STANDARDS In October, the Joint Industry Board launched the new ECS Registered Electrician status. Steve Brawley, JIB chief executive, explains the reasons behind the introduction of the scheme, and the benefits it will offer the industry.
T
he JIB has introduced a new ‘Registered Electrician’ status – via the ECS card scheme – to recognise those electricians who are both qualified to NVQ Level 3 and are also working to the latest British Standard in terms of electrical installation. Any ECS installation or maintenance electrician gold cardholders who are qualified in the current edition of the BS7671 Wiring Regulations can now apply for the new ECS Registered Electrician status. For a cardholder, becoming a Registered Electrician means they can get a well-deserved endorsement for their professionalism and skills, stand out amongst their peers and get a valuable boost to their status and credibility across the industry. For electrical contractors, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate to clients that their electrical workforce is up-todate on the latest industry technology developments and are committed to maintaining this level of professionalism. With the introduction of the new ECS Check service for clients and main contractors, this new initiative also raises the profile of electrical contracting amongst the wider construction industry and procurement community.
Why is the JIB doing this? For many years there has been criticism that the ECS card is an ‘evergreen’ card, since an electrician can apply to the scheme then simply renew their card every three years by paying the fee and passing the health and safety assessment – without any need or obligation to demonstrate they are keeping up-to-date with changes to the Wiring Regulations, Continuing Professional Development or other industry standards. By introducing the Registered Electrician status, the JIB’s aim is to raise the professionalism of individual electricians, electrical contractors and the industry as a whole. It enhances the quality of work by encouraging every ECS electrician to qualify to the current Wiring Regulations. It’s also complementary to existing Approved Contractor and Competent Person Schemes, which certify the companies that undertake electrical installations.
Already around 33,000 electricians – around 55% of the ECS gold cardholder population – are automatically eligible for Registered Electrician status.
Boosting status with clients and main contractors “ECS Check is a new online system that allows main contractors and clients to verify the skills and qualifications of electrical personnel working on projects.”
With the introduction of Registered Electrician, we have also developed a means by which electrical contractors can demonstrate the qualifications of their workforce when bidding for projects. With any electrical installation, the quality of the final product depends on not just the electrical contractor’s company registration but, crucially, the person carrying out the work. ECS Check is a new online system that allows main contractors and clients to verify the skills and qualifications of electrical personnel working on projects. The ECS already verifies applicants’ qualifications in order to issue them with an ECS card – and has done so for over 45 years. There are around 65,000 electricians working at ECS Gold Card level to show they meet the industryrecognised standard. ECS Check provides a convenient way for employers to profile the qualifications held by their workforce and the ECS cards they hold. Clients, main contractors and project managers can use ECS Check’s online portal to validate the electrical workforce on site and produce electronic summaries for auditing and reporting. Those working at ECS Registered Electrician level can also demonstrate they hold the latest edition of BS7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and have committed to maintain their technical knowledge and qualifications.
Registered Electrician criteria For those who wish to become an ECS Registered Electrician, there are three key criteria that must be met. First, the applicant must meet the core requirements for the ECS installation or maintenance electrician; second, they must hold the current edition of the Wiring Regulations; and finally they must agree to a Code of Professional Practice, which includes a commitment to Continuing Professional Development. This is a voluntary scheme – no cardholder is obliged to become a Registered Electrician. If an electrician does not wish to apply for Registered Electrician status, they can still remain in the ECS as a standard installation or maintenance electrician gold cardholder. For existing installation or maintenance electrician cardholders, there is no additional cost involved in becoming a Registered Electrician. A new ‘virtual card’ showing their Registered status will be offered to all current cardholders. This will be downloadable to a smart phone at no extra cost. As an option, the applicant can order a Registered Electrician card at a discounted price if they would like one. If you employ gold card electricians that have also kept up-to-date with the Wiring Regulations, they should be proud of the time and effort put into their skills and professionalism so far. With the launch of the ECS Registered Electrician it gives cardholders the status they deserve, improving not only their credibility but also their company’s reputation with main contractors and clients. TRAVELLING LIGHT As London Luton Airport undergoes the biggest redevelopment in its history, Gamma Illumination explains its role in the success of Luton’s brand new multi-storey car park, part of the airport’s plans to cater for passenger growth.
H
aving handled 14.5m passengers in 2016 and experienced the largest passenger growth of any London airport, London Luton Airport (LLA) is currently investing over £110m to transform the airport and increase capacity from 12m to 18m passengers per year by 2020. This is the biggest development in the airport’s 79-year history. Once a base for Royal Air Force fighters, LLA continued operating as a commercial airport after World War II – and despite its hill-top location and the fact that it is bordered on three sides by Luton, the River Lea and the Chilterns, it has continued to expand, with key road and rail links with the M1, London St Pancras, Nottingham and Leeds making it accessible to passengers from London to the Midlands, the North of England and beyond. To capitalise on this fact, the redevelopment plans include making the airport even easier to reach with better road
access to the M1, new car parking facilities, a remodelled bus and coach interchange and improved rail links to Luton Airport Parkway station. The terminal will also undergo a complete redesign, bringing in new retail and dining options to ensure that the airport sets the tone for an enjoyable passenger experience.
Not only would the car park need to be amply illuminated to enable passengers to park, walk safely to the exits and locate their vehicles upon their return, the luminaires would need to be able to function effectively with minimal maintenance in this cool
The journey begins As part of this ambitious strategy, a new 1,700-space multi-storey car park has been built to provide secure on-site, under-cover parking with a covered walkway linking it directly to the terminal entrance, enabling passengers to walk from their cars to the terminal in minutes. To ensure that the car park’s lighting would meet the high standards demanded by LLA, lighting designer Stuart Price, who designed the LED lighting scheme to deliver on efficiency as well as performance, called upon Gamma Illumination to supply the high quality products required to complete the project.

and exposed location. The lighting would also need to align with LLA’s corporate responsibilities and support the wider goals of the project by keeping carbon emissions low and maximising cost effectiveness whilst remaining compliant with the relevant standards. In order to meet the brief, Gamma would need to provide a secure, sealed and easy-to-maintain solution with exceptional life expectancy. Rather less straightforward was the need to mount them onto trunking using traditional 20mm conduit mounting points rather than the quick-release flush mounted fixing clips, which are featured on the majority of such products as standard.

that the luminaires would achieve the life expectancy demanded of a 24-hour car park. The light quality and distribution would help passengers find their vehicles quickly and easily. As well as being installed throughout the car park, the luminaires were also placed in the stairwells, complete with emergency conversion featuring discreet integral indicators (EMi) to facilitate the safe evacuation of the car park in the event of a power outage or an emergency, and ensure full compliance with the law. Gamma was chosen not only for the quality of its luminaires but also for its ability to deliver them to the client’s schedule, with the 1,000 luminaires provided in six phases to meet the clients’ budgeting requirements. Even more integral to the
decision was Gamma’s ability to modify the product in-house by providing a pre-drilled body ready to mount rather than supplying it with standard fixing clips.
Safe and pleasant journey London Luton Airport was pleased with the standard of Gamma’s products and its ability to provide a tailored solution on time and on budget in accordance with its demanding development plans. Despite the large scale of the project, the brief was met on time and without any major issues. THE LUX LIFE It’s that time of year again – ExCel London will see its doors open to host LuxLive 2017 on November 15-16. ECN takes a look at some of the highlights that will be taking place at this year’s event.

ith the lighting industry abounding with new technology and innovation, the annual lighting event has become a calendar staple for the sharing of new products and information. LuxLive helps attendees stay up-to-date with the latest tech and trends that are evolving within the sector – from novel products to the smart home and connected lighting. This year’s event, which is free to attend, is set to be a platform for learning, networking, and the exchange of information between leading industry members.
More than 300 exhibitors will be showcasing the latest lighting products and services available, and delegates will also have the opportunity to take part in a diverse learning and education programme, delivered by industry experts. There is a wealth of information to take in, from practical ‘how to‘ sessions to seminars and panel discussions that take a deeper look into more in-depth issues facing specific sectors.

Presentations, seminars and panel discussions make LuxLive a hotbed for new ideas

There will be a lot happening on the stage over the course of the two-day event. As well as several break-out sessions, the arena will also highlight some real-world case studies, including connected lighting installations at BMW’s flagship showroom in Munich, Absa Bank branches in South Africa and the Petrie Museum in London. The stage will be the scene of a number of presentations and demonstrations that will cover a range of topics. From Power over Ethernet (PoE), Li-Fi – internet and data delivered using visible light rather than radio waves – and Bluetooth mesh, the arena will provide a place to learn about how lighting might change with new technology.
Scottish start-up pureLiFi and Linmore LED will be demonstrating elements of this new technology as part of their Li-Fi experience zone. The zone will offer more information on LED ‘light bars’, which could replace the commonly used fluorescent tubes. The zone will explore whether integration of Li-Fi within LED strip lights could drive mass adoption, enabling Li-Fi to move into full-scale implementation within places like offices, schools, warehouses. pureLiFi and French light fitting manufacturer Lucibe will also be showcasing a newly developed luminaire. It places all the necessary Li-Fi components in a black ring that lies flat against the ceiling and is designed to circle an LED light. Delivering the internet via visible light, it is able to support between eight to 16 users at once, and deliver data at rates of 45Mbps. The Ores Li-Fi fitting will be on display at the for an up-close look.

Coming together Lightspace will be taking place alongside LuxLive, and is aimed at bringing architects together with the lighting design community. It is another space for the exchange of new ideas and new products, and presentations will include talks on such topics as lighting without luminaires, virtual reality and lighting design on a budget. A pop-up restaurant at Lightspace, the Lumen Café, will provide a place for delegates to relax in between presentations. The first day of LuxLive 2017 will be wrapped up with an extended closing time. The event will be open until 9pm on Wednesday November 15, giving both exhibitors and attendees a chance to network with colleagues and clients at on-stand drinks parties that will take place from 6pm.

The LIA Lighting Academy is a new educational programme at LuxLive which will take delegates through the fundamentals of light, light sources, standards, legislation and lighting design. The Academy is designed to give attendees extra knowledge and information to aid in their decisions when it comes to the installation of lighting in buildings. The programme offers delegates CPD points and a certificate of completion. Delegates will be able to learn more about CEF’s National Accounts and Projects departments, and its solutions for lighting professionals working on domestic, commercial or industrial jobs. CEF’s Projects service allows larger contractors to receive tailored support, guidance and equipment for specific electrical jobs. The National Accounts department, meanwhile, provides a centralised experience, as well as pricing compliance for organisations with multiple accounts across the UK or those that have nationwide requirements.
Safety first The LuxLive exhibition will also cover all things related to emergency lighting – from best practice and legislation to energy efficiency and easy maintenance. As well as tutorials and presentations led by authorities on lighting, there will be the opportunity to take a closer look at stateof-the-art emergency lighting equipment from industry innovators. There are a number of things that those responsible for emergency lighting installations need to be mindful of, including the latest legislation and best practice, energy efficiency and low maintenance, as well as ensuring a building’s occupants are safe at all times. Panel discussions will allow delegates to ask questions, discuss and share expertise about key issues in emergency lighting, including smart technology and the role it has to play, as well as signage, luminaire conversions, and regulations in a changing world. The Escape Zone will place a focus on emergency lighting requirements and standards. The zone is a place to gain practical knowledge, including how to do a risk assessment, regulation compliance, best practice procedures and of course the latest innovations in emergency lighting and safety. Hochiki Europe’s emergency lighting manager, Ian Watts, will be outlining best practice regarding the latest standards around emergency luminaries. He will will present Is my emergency lighting compliant? which will pinpoint the major changes just applied to the standard in the Escape Zone at 10:30am on the first day. Hochiki Europe will also be showcasing its combined emergency lighting and fire detection system, FIREscape+. The system has been specially designed to inform building occupants of unsafe exit routes during emergencies. This is possible via the product’s shared system, in which emergency exit signs and luminaires sit

This year’s event will be continuing its tradition of providing a platform for the latest novel technologies coming to market. Lighting controls specialist B.E.G. will showcase its new range of intelligent light controls using the DALI open standard. The LUXOMAT net DALI System provides end users with an entire intelligent lighting control package which includes multisensors, relay modules, switch interfaces, a power supply with USB interface and DALI software for set-up with the DALI electronic ballasts. This scalable network solution is aimed at providing greater energy efficiency in buildings, while also providing enhanced wellbeing for the room or building’s occupants. There are solutions from single rooms, to multiple rooms, to full building control which integrates into the Building Management System. Crompton will showcase its Phoebe LED range of domestic and commercial fittings for interior, exterior and specialist areas. The Phoebe LED range is designed to provide totally energy efficient lighting solutions with emergency, sensor and DALI options available as specials on most of the range. Making its debut at the show will be the Spectrum, an app-controlled tuneable fire rated downlighter that can be operated from a smartphone.

BACK-LIT TO THE FUTURE With the launch of its 152 lm/W panel, UK manufacturer Integral LED provides some insight into the development path of LED panels, and looks ahead to the future.
T
he unsung hero of the LED lighting world is the ceiling grid light or panel. Since its appearance five years ago, it has been driving growth in office lighting refurbishments. A new age of office energy efficient lighting is sweeping the country, much of it fuelled by interest-free loans and corporate tax breaks. Today the LED panel is the workhorse of office lighting. Yet, the early versions of the LED alternative to fluorescent louvre units offered only a slim advantage in terms of energy savings. The old fluorescent ceiling grid units were swapped from 64 lm/W to a marginally advantageous 78 lm/W in the instance of the first edge-lit LED units. Over time, each wave of LED technology has delivered improved efficiency, climbing steeply as a ratio of power to light. Seemingly we have now arrived at a point where the once unthinkable has occurred. Should we answer the call to replace our first generation LED panels with the next

natural outcome of projecting light through less material. Edge-lit persists as a popular option, typically driven by a lower unit price. However as the short to medium term energy saving benefits of back-lit models become more marked, it is like likely that this format will dominate the category. Corporate customers are no doubt compelled to refurbish their current lighting schemes from fluorescent to LED due to the large savings available. Initiatives like the interest-free loans promoted by the Carbon Trust and accelerated tax relief offered through the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme are fuelling demand for savings directly to the bottom line. A switch to LED panel lighting has become a ‘no-brainer’ for all offices. However, as manufacturers like Integral LED predict the possibility of achieving 200 lm/W by 2020, it now becomes increasingly viable for the early adopters of LED Panels to schedule another upgrade to a new generation of efficient lighting.

The story began with edge-lit, an arrangement where the inner edge of the panel is lined with an array of LED chips and the light is ‘bounced’ downward into the room space. This format of panel was the most popular during the introductory stage of panel lighting compared to the back-lit design. However, back-lit panels have emerged as the clear winner in terms of efficiency; a

TIME TO SMARTEN UP? The smart home revolution is causing a continued increase in the appetite for smart technology. But are there enough qualified electrical installers for the job and have homeowners really embraced the notion? Marie Parry, marketing director at Scolmore Group, examines some of the key issues.
O
n the one hand technology is already an integral part of everyday life for many, in business, recreation and in our homes – and the evolution of the smart home continues to gather momentum. Yet as an industry we are faced with a shortage of
trained, skilled professionals and for many electricians, smart home integration is unfamiliar territory. At the same time, according to a recent survey, there is a fear on the part of home owners to fully embrace the smart home revolution. A poll of 2,000 people by a leading UK price comparison website to garner opinion on smart home technology revealed that 76% of Brits admitted
to being ‘fearful’ of the smart homes concept, with unapproved data collection cited as the greatest worry. The research found that whilst the majority (77%) of those surveyed had heard of a connected home, only 6% claimed to know a lot about smart home technology. This overall situation presents opportunities for forward thinking electricians, who are in a prime position

WIRING ACCESSORIES to introduce the idea of smart home technology to their customers, providing advice and education to the homeowner and at the same time using their skills to introduce a smart element to their client’s home technology requirement. The advent of smart wiring accessories shows how far the humble plug and socket has come. It doesn’t seem that long ago that people started to want more and better sited wiring accessories – switches, switch sockets and dimmers for example – to cope with the increasing number of electrical equipment, such as computers and peripherals, AV, media and kitchen equipment. Today modern wiring accessories include combination media plates for a variety of multimedia ports, USB chargers and connectors. Intelligent wiring accessories can help make homes smarter. There are products now on the market, like our Click Smart range, which is designed to make it easier than ever for installers to provide a smart upgrade to an existing wiring installation with minimum disruption. Click Smart has at its core accessibility and simplicity for the installer and end user and is designed to bring convenience, comfort, security, energy saving and ultimately more control for occupants. It also offers business opportunities for switched-on electrical contractors and installers. Smart switches are devices used for controlling receivers and they consist of a retractive switch module and switch cover plate. They offer a range of solutions that enable the wireless control of receivers from a host of locations. By looking at typical problems encountered while out on the job, installers can sell a simple solution to the end user and introduce an element of smart control. Here are four such scenarios we have outlined, where a smart switch can provide a solution:
Add an additional switch to an existing light without the need for cabling You need to make your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. It’s difficult to see in the dark and you want to avoid

disturbing anyone. The solution is to fit a smart switching module behind the light fitting you wish to activate in the bathroom and then add the switch controller to a convenient place in the bedroom. You can now easily turn the bathroom light on from the comfort of your bed.
Fix a flickering light by using a retractive switch instead of a rotary dimmer (wired) The problem of continuous flickering when you switch on one of your lights with a rotary dimmer can be easily overcome using the multi-functional dimming receiver and a retractive switch. Replace the wired rotary dimmer with the retractive switch and add the receiver to the light fitting. This will instantly stop any flickering that may have occurred.
Introduce two-way dimming control from separate locations (wired) If you have a two-way switch upstairs and a dimmer downstairs you can turn the light on from the switch. Once dimmed with the rotary dimmer, there is no way for you to increase the brightness. You can only switch the lights on and off at the same brightness. This means you have to walk downstairs which can be a hazard if the lighting is set at a low level. By using a multi-functional dimming receiver and two retractive switches, you will be able to dim from both locations, meaning no more risky trips down the stairs in the dark.
Add a switch to an outdoor socket for multiple appliances There are many reasons you may want to add a wireless switch to an outdoor socket, for example switching a light, controlling an outdoor appliance/sprinklers or the ability to switch off power for security. By adding a
smart switch and a receiver to the already powered socket, you will be able to control it from anywhere in your home. The future is definitely smart and, as more consumers become switched on to the idea of being able to control heating, lighting and security in their homes, so the demand for electricians to install the products that will bring this control will continue to rise. If installers are put off by complicated and costly smart control systems, they can start with a back to basics system that offers all the control without the complexity, time, disruption and cost. The installation of a system like Click Smart is simple and flexible, with no additional cables or wall cutting required for installation within existing or newly constructed buildings. Receivers can be installed behind light fittings or into suitable installation boxes and can be utilised with existing wiring. BEAT THE CLOCK For time-pressed electricians, products which prevent delays on-site arising from product damage and loss are vital. As a result, manufacturers are increasingly coming up with new innovations which reduce these hazards. Emma Segelov, head of marketing at MK Electric, discusses some of the latest additions to the market.
A
ccording to recent government statistics, more Brits than at any time since the recession are dreaming of shorter working hours. Like many professions, electricians can feel overworked at times, but shorter working days can be attainable if projects are planned ahead and products are selected carefully. For example, no electrician wants to waste time reinstalling products that have been damaged on-site, or re-ordering parts which have been misplaced during the hustle and bustle of every day construction. At the end of the day, the quicker an electrician can complete the job at hand, the sooner they can move on to the next one. As a result, we are now starting to see products entering the electrical industry which are designed to avoid these common issues. With innovations such as two-piece product designs, manufacturers are developing new products which can help to avoid product damage and loss to ensure time on-site is as productive as possible. At MK Electric, for example, we have recently released our latest range of screwless wiring devices, MK Dimensions, with these specific challenges in mind. During the design process, we spoke to electricians to find out what they need from the wiring devices they install, and what obstacles they face on-site.
Unsurprisingly, a standout, recurring, theme amongst those consulted was the risk of product loss and damage, and the pressure that this can put on effectively meeting project deadlines. Another frequently raised concern was that if a frontplate is not installed until a later stage (in order to protect it) then the functional module may not be compliant with British Standards, and therefore, socket outlets for example may not be operational as an on-site power source. The obvious answer to reducing damage is a design which enables a two-part installation – allowing the functional module to be installed in-line with the build schedule, whilst the frontplate is safely put aside to guard against damage such as plaster abrasions or paint splatter. However, this still leaves two points of difficulty; the first being the risk of losing the frontplate whilst it is waiting for installation, and the second that the functional module alone may not be compliant, and therefore unusable. With this in mind, MK Dimensions was designed to make two-part installation as simple as possible, also ensuring that the functional module is compliant without the frontplate being exposed to potential damage. Unlike many other two-part product solutions, MK Dimensions presents the two individual components as completely separate products, with individual part numbers. This means that whilst the functional module can be installed in-line with the build schedule, the frontplate – which does not need to be fitted until later in the process (perhaps

until just before client handover) – can also be delivered to site at a later stage, avoiding loss and damage. Every functional module is fully compliant with British Standards and therefore can be fully operational, allowing work to continue as usual on-site. As a result, the frontplate finish can be decided on later in the build process, while there is no longer a need to worry about paint splashes or knocks and scratches that may occur whilst the site is still under construction. The potential for the part being mislaid whilst it is awaiting installation is also minimised. Time is of the essence for electricians, and there’s nothing more frustrating than having to re-do a job because of damage or loss. By choosing products which take the risks out of on-site installation, electricians can save their own time, whilst also helping clients to keep their building schedule on track. Ellis installed cable cleat solutions in the Severn Tunnel
Ellis MD Richard Shaw discusses how novel cable cleating helped the company solve installation and safety issues for the likes of Siemens, Network Rail and Balfour Beatty.
A
t first glance, the cable cleat may not seem like a product ripe for design innovation; its role of securing electrical cables in the event of a short circuit is seemingly straightforward enough to preclude it from such activity. But look more closely and you’ll quickly realise you are wrong. For a long time, we banged the drum about the importance of correctly specified cable cleats. The key fact being that without correct specification, all a cable cleat will do is add to the potentially life-threatening shrapnel during a short circuit situation.
Our drumming these days is significantly quieter. The market is now well aware of the need for cleats and as a result it has become increasingly congested, with more manufacturers than ever making them and, in some cases, producing virtual replicas of the most popular. As we’ve done ever since I joined the business in the early noughties, we’ve responded to these changing market conditions by subtly shifting our focus. Back then export was something we really only dabbled in. Today it accounts for over 50% of our annual turnover and sees us export to more than 35 different countries through a network of local distributors.
Our latest change hasn’t been focused on where we sell, but rather what and how we sell – a change that was born out of a growing demand for project specific solutions. Initially, this was confined to bespoke cable cleats being designed and manufactured to exact client specifications and short-circuit tested to exact project conditions. This now has developed to a stage where we are called in, presented with a problem and asked to solve it. The first time this occurred was back in 2014, when Siemens called us in to discuss how we could help with the installation and subsequent restrain of seven large diameter high voltage (HV)

cables on HelWin 2 – a 690MW offshore HVDC platform that would provide lowloss transmission between the North Sea offshore wind farm, Amrumbank West, and Germany’s onshore grid. The end result was our Cable Guide Clamp – a product that first acts as a guide for the large HV cables, before being transformed into a fully-functioning HV cable clamp. At that time, delivering the Cable Guide Clamp was a huge achievement for us, but now, just three years down the line, that kind of work is a regular occurrence. This year we’ve designed, manufactured and helped install brand new cable cleat solutions for both the Severn Tunnel and the New Wear Crossing. The latter of these installations saw us called in by Balfour Beatty after its initial plan to secure cables running the entire length of the new bridge proved unworkable. Our response incorporated 252 specially designed assemblies, each comprising 12 standard 2F+172 clamps and a stainless steel support frame. Our ability to deliver such products has been enhanced by developing manufacturing technology and a recruitment focus that has seen both the skillsets and size of our product design team expand. Today we are able to do the design; guarantee a new product’s performance characteristics through a combination of finite element analysis,
3D printing and physical testing; produce tooling and then manufacture the product. All of which can done with a lead-time that can be measured in weeks rather than months, and at cost that is comparable to any viable off-the-shelf solution. The extent of our drive to become an industry innovator can be encapsulated by one product – the Ellis No Bolts cleat, which was developed in response to a major safety concern raised by Network Rail through our UK distributor, ETS Cable Components. The Network Rail problem was to do with outer sheaths of live cables being breached during the installation of new cable runs onto existing cleating infrastructure. The nub of the problem was that in order to accommodate new cable, and by extension new cleats, existing clamps had to be dismantled, and longer bolts fed through to allow for the stacking of new clamps. The existing live cable then had to be put back into the old clamps, and it was during this stage of the process that the long bolts were snagging the cable and allowing current to track into the containment system. This resulted in a number of earth faults and at least one engineer receiving a major electric shock. With the intention of resolving the issue, we designed a stackable product, which meant additional cable runs could be added quickly, easily and without any need to disturb existing live cables.

As the name suggests, the Ellis No Bolts cleat has no bolts. Instead it is fastened with two keepers that lock into the top clamp and secure it into position within the base clamp – a process that is tool as well as bolt free. The stackable nature of the cleats is made possible by a recess in the top moulding, and a twist fit foot on the base moulding, which lock together with a simple quarter turn hand operation. The chosen manufacturing material is a high strength nylon specifically formulated to have sufficient low smoke properties to meet London Underground 1-085 specification. Because of the nonmetallic design, the cleat is impervious to the bi-metallic corrosion that causes problems in any number of harsh environments. The Ellis No Bolts cleat became the first cable cleat to be granted Network Rail’s PADs approval. Looking forward, I’m certain the industry will begin to catch up, meaning bespoke product innovations and problem solving solutions will no longer be the sole domain of industry trendsetters, but very much a must-have service for all. Of course, with developing technology, most notably advances in 3D printing, in-house manufacturing will become easier. W
hen taking on a job, it’s always best practice for electricians to meet the customer’s needs as much as possible to receive great feedback and repeat business. At times, this may mean taking a less efficient route in the completion of a job to ensure minimal aesthetic interference to the customer’s property. This presents a common challenge for tradespeople: keeping customers’ fixtures and fittings intact when moving cables in floors or ceilings, which often requires electricians to be flexible in the route they take. Cable rods make a significant difference when it comes to efficiency and flexibility. To provide the perfect solution to this everyday task, C.K tools worked directly with its team of electricians to better understand the issues faced with cable routing, the results of which will likely sound familiar.
Flexibility A 20-30mm gap can be extremely challenging to navigate, especially when blindly fishing for cables in cavities. While many rods eventually find their destination, electricians regularly find that the cable is not in the direct line of the gap. Standard rods that claim to feature high tensile strength struggle to fit in these gaps and cannot bend to reach their destination, leaving electricians with a tough task ahead and, quite often, their rods snapping and getting left behind in the fixtures.

Splintering Every tradesperson is well acquainted with cable routing and the subsequent risks of snagging and painful splinters. Pushing and pulling cable rods across rough surfaces causes friction, which can damage the rods and result in splintering. While it’s common to find a set of cable rods wrapped in electrical tape in an electrician’s arsenal to decrease the risk of splintering, bulky tape simply reduces accessibility to smaller holes.
Strength The tensile strength of cable rods is hugely important when routing cables. Attempting to pull a trapped cable using force can result in rods snapping and disconnecting, losing expensive equipment in the fixtures. Electricians require rods with connectors strong enough to manage the routine task of cable routing and the industry’s standard does not currently stack up to the needs of the user.

ENLIGHTENING ENERGY EFFICIENCY Stewart Langdown, business development director of CPN Lighting Control, considers the lighting control options available when it comes to making buildings smarter and saving energy.
A
s in so many other areas of building technology, the field of lighting control has seen some significant advances and choosing the best control strategy for a particular building, or different spaces within a building, depends on understanding all of the options. These options relate to both control strategy and control protocols, and Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) systems are increasingly the protocol of first choice. Getting to grips with the latest lighting control technologies is clearly worthwhile because the energy savings can be considerable – not to mention the ability to enhance the visual comfort of occupants. For example, using effective lighting control can deliver energy savings exceeding 25% in a commercial office to 80% in warehousing and storage. In terms of preventing wasted energy, there are several control modes that can be deployed. The most obvious of these is on/off switching but this generally isn’t the smartest option as people have a habit of forgetting to switch the lights off when they’re not needed. Moreover, the Building Regulations point towards more sophisticated control methods, on the principle that if you are going to manage lighting, manage it well.
Taking advantage of daylight A typical scenario would be people arriving for work in the morning when the sun is low in the sky so they turn the lights on. As the day progresses, the daylight levels increase but people engrossed in their work are unlikely to notice that the lights are still on. One highly effective area of control is therefore to take better advantage of natural daylight by measuring it and either adding or subtracting artificial light to maintain the required illumination. This can be achieved by using either passive daylight monitoring or active daylight monitoring. Passive daylight monitoring uses a passive photocell within a light sensor and will hold off the lighting when someone enters a space, typically with the ability to add manual switch override. Active daylight

Choosing the protocol
Smart lighting controls can be utilised in a number of ways to increase energy efficiency
monitoring uses an active photocell within a light sensor and measures real time natural light. It can then switch fixed luminaires on or off, or vary the light output of regulated luminaires.
Who’s there? Another commonly used parameter for lighting control, of course, is occupancy – on the grounds that there’s little point in lighting a space if there’s nobody in it. Here, the choice of occupancy sensors is important and usually comes down to a choice between passive infra-red (PIR) and microwave. PIR sensors are the most commonly used motion sensing technology and have been tried and tested in a wide range of scenarios. However, most have a limited range (typically 7m diameter from a mounting height of 2.8m) and limited movement sensitivity. This means that in areas such as corridors, several sensors may be required to give full coverage. However, some manufacturers are now offering PIR sensors that can be mounted at 20m. An alternative is to use microwave sensors, which can be configured to give 360° coverage or directional coverage over a longer distance. These have greater range and sensitivity than PIRs (from 7m diameter to >25m in directional mode). When using microwave sensors, it’s important to be aware that they can ‘see’ through glass or partition walls and they can be adversely affected by a significant presence of steel in the environment.
On and off or up and down? A key decision to make early on in the project is how the lighting is to be regulated, besides providing a ‘smarter’ solution that is responsive to change. It may also be that the smart solution for one space is different to that for another.
For example, in an office building there will usually be a few cellular offices and small meeting rooms, where the space is either occupied or unoccupied. Here, a simple on/off response to occupancy or lack of it may be all that’s needed. In the same building, there will typically be larger areas of open plan office space where at any one time some workstations will be in use while others aren’t. Such areas will also receive variable amounts of daylight depending on time of day and proximity to windows. In these situations, a smarter regulated solution will be to configure the system to respond to daylight levels across the space and include some zoning to detect occupancy of individual or small groups of workstations. In such cases, absence detection is usually the most efficient form of occupancy control. Moreover, it is important to light different areas of an office building inline with their function, with an emphasis on lighting the task – as recommended in EN 12464-1. For example, a typical UK office building has around 60% of its space as corridor, yet these areas are lit to the same levels as workstations. Similarly, in a warehouse where certain racking aisles are only visited very occasionally, on/off switching may be acceptable. However, there may also be aisles in the same warehouse that are accessed frequently during the day. Here, it makes more sense to dim the lighting when the aisle is unoccupied and then ramp up the light levels when someone approaches (on foot or in a forklift). Of course, these are only a couple of examples of how the lighting control requirements for a smart building may vary. Tailoring each system to the precise needs of the building, and re-commissioning the lighting as those needs change through the life of the building is essential for achieving maximum benefits.

Providing a regulated lighting control system necessitates the use of regulated control gear, of which there are three main types. These are 1-10V analogue, DSI (Digital Serial Interface) and DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface). Each has advantages and disadvantages. 1-10V analogue dimming systems are very familiar as they’ve been around for years and the ballasts are cheaper than digital equivalents. They are also very simple to install and commission and dim suitable lamps to between 3% and 10% of full output. On the downside, analogue dimming lacks the functionality of digital dimming and is not as flexible for multi-circuit dimming. It also suffers from signal noise and losses on longer cable runs so that screened cable is required for runs longer than 5m. Also, the control pair is polarity conscious. DSI ballasts are relatively affordable when compared to other protocols, will provide dimming to 10%, 3% and 1%, have the best dimming curve and protocol structure and are suitable for dimming across multiple circuits. Certain DSI models can also provide a ‘switch dim’ feature, optimised energy efficiency and lamp error feedback. The control cable is not polarity conscious and does not need to be screened. However, DSI ballasts are only available from one supplier, the ballast constantly draws current (parasitic) and specialist tools are required to test the dimming signal. DALI systems address many of the disadvantages described above. They are less prone to noise than 1-10V systems and are supported by multiple lighting manufacturers so it’s possible to ‘shop around’. They will dim down to 10%, 3%, 1% and, theoretically, 0.1% with the option of a manual ‘touch and dim’ feature. Also, DALI is the only global lighting standard. DALI ballasts also have some downsides. They can cost more than other protocols and the reduction in energy consumption is not a linear relationship with dimming. Like DSI ballasts, they also draw current constantly and it can take longer to commission a DALI system than other protocols. DALI addressable, aka smart lighting, allows luminaires to be individually addressed and programmed so that each can do different things. This addressability is only possible with the DALI protocol and is one of the main reasons why smart buildings include smart lighting that employs DALI drivers and inverters. Smart systems can also be easily reconfigured. This is a major advantage for building operators, who may need to change the lighting control system when building usage changes.
Smart choices One of the things that makes a building smart is its ability to vary environmental parameters to suit the needs of occupants while also delivering the energy efficiency and environmental performance that the building owner/operator demands. The importance of light in terms of visual comfort, lifecycle costs and environmental impact means this is an area that can’t be ignored. A building without smart lighting is not a smart building. eplacing energyhungry conventional lamps with LED equivalents makes economic and environmental sense. LED lighting products are energy efficient and cost effective with ultra-
long lifespans compared with traditional units, so making the decision to change should be an easy one. But how to choose amongst the multitude of suppliers? LED offers significant benefits, including radical reduction of CO2 emissions and running costs, lower maintenance, long lifespan and instant switch-on. Another bonus is that the
retrofitting options offered by some manufacturers means products fit straight into existing fittings, thereby reducing the scale of the installation as well as the cost. So, having made the decision to switch to LED, how do facilities managers (FM) make an informed and confident decision on the right supplier?

maintenance costs. Also, the variability in products and performance on offer is so wide that choosing the right product and the right supplier can be a minefield.
Get to know your future partner A close working relationship between supplier and purchaser is often the key to a successful lighting project, whether for a new facility or LED replacement in existing sites. For smaller organisations, a good supplier can help FMs and their teams design the solution and identify the right products for the job. For larger FM companies, suppliers should work closely with them developing proposals for their clients. It’s a consultative approach. To help decide what to look for in a reliable LED supplier, facilities management organisations should consider the vendor’s background, quality, performance and price. FMs new to LED lighting can gain substantial benefits by working with suppliers that already have extensive experience with facilities management. Regardless of whether the buyer has LED lighting expertise in-house, the level of technical support offered by the supplier should be a major factor in the decision. Sourcing from an LED lighting specialist ensures the support of people who understand the challenges, ideally with experience of delivering LED installations of a similar style and size. New users of LEDs should look carefully into long-term credibility of the supplier. Manufacturers develop and produce products, and invest heavily in R&D. Their engineers work within existing parameters of LED technology. Installers may not understand component configurations in detail, and elements that can alter performance often rely on specialised electronics.
Successful relationships depend on due diligence
With all the benefits that LED technology brings, it is very easy to fall into the trap of purchasing based on grand claims rather than real-world performance. If the focus is simply cost-reduction, it can be easy to overlook the drawbacks of lower quality, which quickly eats into any potential savings on long-term
Most FMs will already have established processes to assess supplier background. As well as basic credit checks, a look at their trading history will provide valuable insights on financial standing and past performance. This is especially important for longterm supply contracts; also, to ensure peace-of-mind that warranties will be honoured. Some LED lamp manufacturers offer lengthy warranties, but that’s only of value if the business is stable. Look for a proven track record: ask for feedback and references from previous customers on performance and service – something a good supplier will happily provide. As with all electrical and electronic goods, LED suppliers need to be WEEE compliant, taking responsibility for disposing of electrical waste properly and safely. With today’s numerous recycling schemes, it’s easy to comply and there is no acceptable excuse for non-compliance. Your supplier should have their WEEE membership details to hand. Another mandatory requirement is to insist on suppliers providing CE and RoHS-certified products. Products lacking a CE mark have not passed basic electrical testing and could pose serious electrical hazards during installation and use. Potential suppliers should be able to provide copies on request.

Over and above these basic certifications, product quality is very important. After all, maintenance savings are a key reason to choose LED lighting. Poor quality diminishes the benefits. Many facilities management organisations operate within comprehensive ISO qualifications and can expect suppliers to be the same. An integral part of this is quality of manufacture. LED lamps and luminaires should be mechanically sound from the outset, showing no signs of rattling, or indications that the body is flimsy or fragile. Equally important is the quality of data that suppliers provide – not only on product performance data such as power consumption, light output and ingress protection, but also information such as installation guides.

Give LEDs a try – but start off small After initial paper assessment of the LEDs, reputable vendors will allow customers to trial products, either free of charge or on a sale or return basis. Trial projects offered by suppliers can help to ease FMs through the transition and gain an initial assessment of potential benefits in the future. For example, taking light output
Once the project is up and running, after sales service is especially important for LED lighting. LED products offer an ultra-long lifespan, so vendor guarantees should reflect this. A confident manufacturer will provide at least three years’ warranty and should be able to support the warranty period with proof of live installations that have performed reliably for similar periods of time. Of course, even the most reputable, knowledgeable and service-oriented supplier will recognise that pricing is a key part of facilities managers’ considerations. But experienced buyers know that if products seem too cheap, there will be reasons. These could include poor quality components and substandard manufacturing techniques. Low quality LEDs will cause problems such as inadequate light performance, whilst poorly assembled products can pose serious installation and safety hazards. Other common problems include unreliability, for example colour-shifting over time, rapid degradation of light output, plus high failures in large quantities and quality of light output not fit for purpose. Such issues are frequently exacerbated by poor or non-existent after sales support. In the event of a problem, the supplier should have the resources to rectify it quickly, effectively and efficiently. Cheaper LEDs will inevitably cost more in the long run.

Continuity of supply is essential and quotes of six to eight weeks for stock should sound a warning signal. T
he world of energy is experiencing a paradigm shift as the demand for decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitisation rockets. A huge uptake in renewable and distributed generation means that our power supply has never been more complex at a time when our need for energy has never been greater. Yet digitisation, the massive growth in the sharing of data across industry and society, holds the key that will enable us to manage our energy needs. In this a new environment, businesses too must learn to manage their power. This is necessary, not simply to keep the lights on but to stay competitive in a rapidly changing world. Uptime is critical and at many large facilities power outages can be crippling, costing over £1 million a day while endangering the lives of their occupants.
In addition, operations and maintenance costs can represent as much as 80% of the total lifecycle of a building’s operation over a 50-year period. This stems from the need for regular checkups over the course of the life of the building’s equipment. Yet this ultimately results in equipment being checked regardless of its status, where faults are often discovered too late and must be repaired, at great cost and disruption. Against this backdrop, building and facilities managers are under great pressure to cut energy costs whilst growing revenues. The logical course is to limit downtime and the cost of repairs by ensuring a more efficient, reliable supply of power and by improving monitoring practices. Many have struggled to achieve this, but the application of the right strategy and technology can be transformative. Companies can take the opportunities presented by digitisation
through switching to a more connected, active energy management. However, to do this companies must first obtain information on their processes and energy usage. FLUKE T6 ELECTRICAL TESTERS OFFER FIELDSENSE TECHNOLOGY The new Fluke T6 electrical testers with FieldSense Technology make troubleshooting electrical systems safer and more efficient by allowing electricians to take simultaneous voltage and current measurements without test leads.
