tarting out in any career can be difficult, and the electrical sector is no different. At the same time, it’s also never been more important to encourage young people to join the electrical workforce than it is now. In October’s issue of ECN magazine, Rexel outlines the stories of three young electricians who are just finding their feet in the industry – and the challenges they have met along the way. Supporting this new generation is a vital part of maintaining the industry, and a perfect opportunity to introduce a new way of thinking and approach to old problems. What else should we be doing as a sector to encourage apprenticeships? And how can we support them in their learning? Of course, learning shouldn’t stop after the completion of an apprenticeship. With the ever-changing demands of the electrical contracting industry, there is always an opportunity to learn and share knowledge with others; ECN is eager to provide a platform for this. The industry is still getting to grips with the changes that the 18th Edition has brought, and this issue, we take a closer look at how it will affect the day-to-day of electricians. INDUSTRY NEWS JACK TEASDALE WINS 2018 ECA EDMUNDSON AWARD 21-year-old Jack Teasdale has been recognised as one of the country’s leading electrotechnical and engineering services apprentices after winning the 2018 ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award during an awards ceremony held September 19 in London. Jack, who works for ECA member-firm Opus Building Services Ltd in Tyne and Wear, was trained by JTL. After overcoming fierce competition from two other finalists, Jack won prizes which include £1,500 and a study tour to France sponsored by industry manufacturer Hager. He will also go on to be an ambassador for the electrotechnical industry over the next 12 months. Jack said, “It’s very humbling and a privilege to be recognised as ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year, and to be an ambassador for other apprentices. One of my mentors was himself the winner of this award in 1997, so it’s an honour to follow in his footsteps.” The two runners-up, who each won £750 and a state-of-the-art toolkit, are Niall Watson of Derry Building Services and Conor McCarthy of Darke and Taylor. ECA CEO Steve Bratt commented, “I’m pleased to offer our congratulations to Jack Teasdale for deservedly winning this year’s ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award. The quality of the three finalists this year is a real indication of the talent that exists in our industry.” Edmundson Electrical managing director Mark Felber added, “Edmundson is delighted to have sponsored the industry-leading ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award for the last 44 years. We have a long-established policy of developing young people within our sector through both our apprenticeship and graduate schemes.”
ELECTRICIANS FACE DOUBLE WHAMMY OF LATE PAYMENTS & RISING COSTS Construction-related companies across Scotland are being hit by a double whammy of rising costs and late payment, according to a new business survey which tracks quarterly activity and trends. On the issue of payment, respondents to the survey confirmed that just under half of all payments from public sector bodies were made within 30 days. But by contrast, only 30% of payments from commercial clients were made within 30 days with the rest taking up to 89 days to settle their accounts. The survey was carried out on behalf of ECA, BESA, SELECT and SNIPEF. It also showed that the costs faced by companies shot up in the second quarter of the year, reflecting ongoing political uncertainty and wider international commodity ramifications. More than 70% of respondents said that material costs were higher than at the start of the year while 29.51% said that the cost of being tendered to had risen. Other Scottish Government initiatives to improve payment were having little overall impact with just over 10% of respondents saying that their organisations’ projects used Project Bank Accounts (PBAs). Darrell Matthews, director of SELECT, said,“The construction sector is currently in a good place in Scotland, but this masks some bad practice in the industry, as this survey highlights. “Whilst it’s good to see some public sector clients’ efforts on fair payment policy heading in the right direction, it is vital to ensure that SMEs, the lifeblood of the Scottish economy, are paid on time. “It is also a tribute to the resilience of both small and large employers that they are generally more optimistic about future work despite rising costs and recurring late payment issues. “The Scottish Government could do more to assist SMEs by enforcing their own powers under the Procurement Act to make sure payments are made on time right down the contractual chain. Changes to the levels at which PBAs are introduced would also help in speeding up payment”.
BREATHING BUILDINGS WELCOMES BB101 2018 Breathing Buildings has welcomed the 2018 edition of BB101: Guidelines on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools. Published recently by the Education and Skills Funding Agency, the document is aimed at technical professionals involved in the design, specification and construction of new school buildings and the refurbishment of existing buildings. This Building Bulletin sets out the regulatory framework for school ventilation giving recommended performance levels for compliance with UK regulations, while also providing nonstatutory guidance on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools. BB101 2018 sets more stringent air quality targets, is tougher on summertime overheating, and recommends a pre-mixing of air to eliminate cold draughts. Hybrid ventilation systems are also introduced in BB101 2018, alongside traditional natural and mechanical ventilation, offering specifiers an alternative ventilation design strategy for schools.
“We welcome the updated BB101 since it comprehensively addresses the issues of air quality, thermal comfort and energy use, all of which are key to the design of ventilation systems in schools. This guidance will help ensure that we have efficient, healthy and comfortable environments in schools so children will benefit from effective teaching and learning spaces,” said Matthew Bray, commercial director at Breathing Buildings. The guidelines include maximum CO2 limits which cannot be breached for 20 consecutive minutes. BB101 has also established air flow requirements for science labs, halls and gyms to help ensure children experience healthy indoor environments. Breathing Buildings was part of the advisory board for BB101 and designed two of the supporting BB101 design calculation tools; the cold draught calculator and the CO2 build up calculator to aid school ventilation design. This will make the Sangamo range much more widely and readily accessible to customers through the electrical wholesale channel. Sangamo has been manufacturing time switches at the Glasgow factory for over 65 years and today the company offers a wide range of time switches and heating controls for domestic, commercial and industrial use. INDUSTRY NEWS TRADESPEOPLE NOT CONFIDENT ADVISING CUSTOMERS ON FIRE DOOR SAFETY, SAYS POLL An online poll has revealed that 50% of tradespeople don’t feel confident in advising customers on fire door safety. Less than 20% of tradespeople polled have seen an increase in demand for fire safety products or parts such as replacement intumescent strips for fire doors. The results were published in support of Fire Door Safety Week, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors in saving lives. The poll followed a national survey of 2,000 adults across the country, carried out by online trade supplier IronmongeryDirect and supported by the Fire Industry Association. The results illustrate a lack of general public awareness of the role of fire doors, which are a legal requirement in all commercial, public and multi-occupancy buildings. A total of 70% of respondents would not know who to contact if they noticed a problem with a fire door. In addition, almost one in two people surveyed admitted that they do not know how to identify a fire door. A further 34% of people nationally said they would prop a fire door open to let in fresh air or give easier access, among other reasons. According to the British Woodworking Federation, the organisation behind Fire Door Safety Week, three million fire doors are installed each year. However, they remain a significant area of neglect and should be regularly checked and maintained by those responsible for the upkeep of the building.
UK STREET LIGHTING MARKET TO SEE 17% VALUE GROWTH BY 2022 The UK street lighting market has seen steady growth in recent years, driven by substantial LED replacement programmes run by local authorities over the past five years or so, according to a report by AMA Research. The Street Furniture and Lighting Market Report - UK 2018-2022 says that by 2022, expenditure on street lighting is forecast to reach £336m, up by 17% compared with present levels. The share of the market taken by new projects is expected to increase, as more local authorities replace outdated lighting systems with LEDs. Street lights account for an estimated 95% of public sector street lighting, with illuminated signs and bollards making up the remainder. Street lighting products include lamps, columns and ‘intelligent’ or ‘smart’ street lighting control systems. With costs for non-energy efficient lighting increasing rapidly, more local authorities have been adopting LED systems offering 100,000 hours of light, compared with 15,000 for traditional bulbs. It has been suggested that local authorities could cut their energy expenditure by around £100m per annum by switching to LED street lights. Although many councils have already switched to LED, there remains a significant proportion of old style, lower value lighting that is over 40 years old and in need of replacement and conversion. By 2014 only 10% of councils had switched to using low energy lighting and estimates suggest that in 2017 around 25% of lighting columns were in the process of being upgraded by local authorities. CONTRACTOR GIVES AWAY VAN TO HELP APPRENTICES An NICEIC registered contractor is giving away his van to set up a fund for apprentice electricians. Thomas Nagy, who runs a YouTube channel showcasing his electrical work in and around London, came up with the idea after deciding to get a new van for his business. Thomas commented, “With new laws surrounding emission levels in central London, I have had to look at getting a new more eco-friendly van. “Normally, I would just look to trade in the old van but to be honest I have had it since new and it has served me well so I thought, why not try and do something different?” He estimates the old van, which is fully racked out, is worth around £4,000. It will also come complete with a brand-new toolkit, courtesy of ITS Tools, which is worth £400. The competition requires visitors to his site to answer a simple question and pay £5 to be in with a chance of
winning the van. The competition has raised more than £5,000 already and will run until November 4. Thomas is going to donate the proceeds from the competition to a bursary fund specifically for young apprentices who need a hand to make a start in the sector. He has asked NICEIC to help facilitate the fund. NICEIC already runs its own ‘Jobs for the Girls’ bursary which aims to give young women, who are under-
represented in the electrical industry, a helping hand. The Thomas Nagy apprentice fund will be run in a similar format with young apprentices able to apply for a certain amount of funding to help them with tools, training, or other associated costs. ACI WARNS OF DANGEROUS TURKISH FLEXIBLE CORD Unsafe flexible cord, intended for use in domestic and industrial applications, has been found on sale in the UK, prompting the ACI to issue a fresh alert to the electrical supply chain. The latest find of substandard flexible cords is marked ‘Made in Turkey’ and ‘Ermaks’. Samples came to light following the initiative’s recent `Counterfeit Flexible Cords’ campaign, which alerted the electrical supply chain to dangerous industrial flexible cords. According to the ACI, in two separate instances, 1.5mm² and 2.5mm² three-core PVC insulated and PVC sheathed ordinary duty flexibles have been submitted for testing to the ACI. Testing showed that the cable’s conductors were Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA). This is believed to be a deliberate attempt by the manufacturer to reduce the amount of copper within the core and in doing so the cost of the cables, says the ACI. The flexible cord could potentially be used in domestic extension leads and industrial connection leads which are exposed to constant flexing during their everyday use. Testing showed conductor resistance to be higher than that specified by the British and European standards that the cord claimed to meet. The reduced copper content results in the cords burning out whilst in use, creating a significant fire risk to the user. The reduction in copper content of the 2.5mm² conductors meant they only just met the maximum safe current carrying capacity of a 1.0mm². ACI is warning that any cable or flexible cords marked ‘Made in Turkey’ and `Ermaks’ should not be used and should be tested by an approved electrician. Samples can also be sent to the ACI (minimum 5m length) for testing.

INDUSTRY NEWS LEVC ANNOUNCES ELECTRIC VAN TRIALS TO BEGIN NEXT YEAR LEVC (London EV Company) has announced that it is due to start trials with potential customers of its new electric van in London in the second half of 2019. The business is currently in discussion with a number of major public-sector fleets about joining the trials of prototype vehicles. This includes the Metropolitan Police Service and the London Fire Brigade – both of whom have ambitious programmes to clean up their vehicle fleets, with a target for all new vans being zero emission capable from 2025. Earlier this year, LEVC announced it would be entering the van market with a zero-emission capable product. The van will combine a fully electric powertrain with an economical petrol range-extender. This approach means cleaner vehicles that are able to go the distance but also lower running costs. LEVC expects that the vehicle – for its size – will deliver a competitive total cost of ownership. LEVC has previously announced that this product is not intended for ‘last-mile delivery’ and will instead focus on fleets where vehicles undertake demanding duty cycles – for example, travel over 100 miles a day. This is a segment currently dominated by one tonne medium sized diesel vans.
VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER SETS NEW NÜRBURGRING LAP RECORD A Volkswagen Transporter has set an unofficial lap record of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in the hands of HMS Racing British Touring Car driver Rob Austin. The lap time of nine minutes 58 seconds beats the benchmark time set by TV presenter and professional motor racing driver Sabine Schmitz, of 10 minutes and 8 seconds, in 2005. The production-standard Volkswagen Transporter was supplied by Northgate Vehicle Hire, and is powered by the mid-range 150 PS diesel engine. The attempt, filmed on home soil for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, set out to beat the 10-minute barrier and the time set by Schmitz on the same track 13 years ago. Northgate Vehicle Hire sponsors Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) team HMS Racing. A spokesman said, “This feat by a professional racing driver was an unusual way to showcase the quality and durability of one of our most popular vans, the Volkswagen Transporter.” Kate Wright, national rental manager, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented, “The Transporter has won a host of accolades throughout its history, but this is perhaps one of the most unusual. We’re really excited to be part of this record attempt which shows just what our vans can do. Most customers choose them because they’re reliable, costeffective and offer some of the best technologies available, but maybe this is another good reason to choose one!”
UK CONSTRUCTION FIRMS OFFERED ‘BREXIT INSURANCE’ Construction Insure is offering free one-on-one advice sessions for builders and contractors concerned about the impact Brexit will have on the UK construction sector and their own businesses. The consultations have been introduced to ease the growing concerns of construction firms who fear a hard Brexit could have a massive impact on their own companies and on the number of projects available after Britain leaves the European Union. There are estimated to be more than 120,000 EU migrants working in the UK construction sector, many in skilled positions. Experts have warned that the building industry is bracing itself for a possible shockwave if European workers choose to leave the country post Brexit. It would significantly increase the cost burden on UK building firms if they had to recruit and train UK staff to replace these EU nationals if they were to leave Britain in large numbers. Construction Insure is holding the free Brexit Insurance consultations at their north London HQ to advise firms how best to protect themselves from the uncertainty around Brexit. Mark Herbert of Construction Insure said firms were worried about both increased labour costs post Brexit and a possible downturn in business if the UK exits the EU without a strong trade deal.

PROJECT SHOUT RAISES AWARENESS FOR CO POISONING Project SHOUT is urging installers to raise awareness of the dangers of CO by highlighting the importance of having fuel appliances regularly serviced by a registered engineer and ensuring residents have audible and functioning CO alarms installed in their home. According to Project SHOUT, it is estimated that only about a third of properties in the UK have a CO alarm fitted. In addition, a recent survey by Project SHOUT revealed that 80% of people who did have a CO alarm had no idea whether it worked or not as they never tested it. Along with recommending alarms to those who don’t have them already installed, Project SHOUT suggests highlighting to residents the importance of testing their alarm regularly to ensure it is working correctly. Many people also don’t realise that the sensors in CO alarms have a limited life span of typically seven to 10 years and that alarms need replacing after that time. CONTRACT NEWS WLS COMPLETES FIRE & SECURITY INSTALLATION AT £48M OFFICE SCHEME WLS has completed a complex installation at 160 Aldersgate, a £48 million refurbishment by McLaren Construction involving transformation of a tired 1980s building into 266,000 sqft of Grade A office space. WLS installed smoke detectors and alarms as part of the Cat A electrical fit out for the whole building, designing the installation to enable extensions and additions to the core system to suit occupier requirements. The company also completed the fire safety installation for all pre-let areas of the building, aligned to a phased evacuation strategy that will maximise personal safety in the event of a fire while reducing business interruption and the potential for false alarms. WLS integrated the fire detection and alert system with a PAVA (public address and voice alarm) system, ensuring safety and evacuation messages are audible in all locations. The fully-programmable system has been integrated with a number of other elements of the mechanical and electrical installation to aid access and egress, manage smoke and minimise additional hazards based on cause and effect scenario planning. The security system combines access control, digital video and intruder alarm in a single, scalable system, with dedicated software to enable bespoke programming of all locations for restricted employee and visitor access. WLS also designed and installed a highperformance CCTV system for the building with HD CCTV hardware and IP Ethernetbased image delivery to the control room via Cat 5 cable networks. WLS installed the server, the PC monitoring stations and the software for the CCTV system, with installation of the cameras themselves simplified by the use of an IP-based system. WLS was also responsible for fit out of the control room, which sits at the heart of the life safety systems and contains the monitoring control panels for the ATS (automatic transfer switches), the smoke extract system, the fire alarm system, the smoke damper status panel, the CCTV, the disabled refuge control panel, and the sprinkler status panel and the PAVA control system.
ZUMTOBEL GROUP HELPS CREATE RIGHT AMBIENCE IN LEISURE FACILITY Zumtobel and Thorn Lighting have played a big part in creating the right ambience for the £25 million Places Leisure Eastleigh sports, health and fitness venue in Hampshire. The new centre is located next to the building of the old Fleming Park Leisure Centre and has been developed by Eastleigh Borough Council.
The state-of-the art facility, co-funded by Sport England who contributed £2 million to the scheme, will feature a giant sports hall that will house 15 badminton courts. An eight-lane pool has also been created on the ground floor near a learner pool with a floor depth that can be altered. The centre will also have a 150-station gym, a ballet studio, a spin studio, a crèche, a soft play area incorporating party rooms and a café with outside seats. For the vast sports hall and squash courts, Zumtobel’s Craft compact LED high-bay luminaires have provided the solution. SOUTH AYRSHIRE SCHOOL PUPILS PILOT CUTTING-EDGE LIFI TECHNOLOGY pureLiFi has deployed its LiFi solutions – which use light to establish wireless internet connections – at Kyle Academy secondary school in Ayr, Scotland. The project is being conducted in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh and is being overseen by Scottish Futures Trust, which supports the Scottish Government’s Digital Strategy. The Scottish Government also supported the pilot with a £16,000 grant through its Digital Schools initiative for equipment and installation. pureLiFi and the LiFi Research and Development Centre at the University of Edinburgh provided resources for the execution of the pilot with hands-on support and subsequent testing. South Ayrshire Council’s Kyle Academy is the first school globally to pilot real LiFi technology within the classroom. The installation of pureLiFi’s LiFi-XC system comprised eight LiFi-enabled LED light bulbs in the ceiling and students have been given access to LiFi-XC stations that plug in to their laptops enabling high-speed connectivity through the lights. Student Toby Nixon who has taken part in the pilot said, “It is exciting to be part the world first LiFi deployment in a school, especially because it is a technology born in Scotland, a country with a proud history of innovation.” Professor Harald Haas, of University of Edinburgh and co-founder of pureLiFi, commented, “LiFi was born in Scotland at a TED Global talk that I presented in 2011. Seven years later, I am absolutely thrilled to see true LiFi deployed for the first time in a school in Scotland. Connectivity has become a basic need to enable prosperity. This world’s first pilot not only offers secure connectivity in a school, but hopefully inspires the next generation to join us in innovating for humanity and prosperity.”

PRYSMIAN AWARDED NEW PROJECT FOR SUBMARINE INTERCONNECTION IN GREECE Prysmian Group has been awarded a new contract worth approximately €21 million by IPTO (Independent Power Transmission Operator), the Transmission System Operator of the Greek electricity system, for two interconnections between the Cyclades islands (Evia, Andros and Tinos), Greece. The project involves the design, supply and installation, as well as the related land civil work of two turnkey High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) cable systems designed to transmit a power of 200 MVA and consisting of 150kV three core cables with XLPE insulation and double wire armouring and associated fibre optic cable system along a total route of over 18km (16,5 km submarine and 2km land) for the interconnection between the four landfalls (Evia – Andros and Andros – Tinos). The submarine cable system will increase and ensure robust, reliable and sustainable power transmission system between the Cyclades islands. The maximum water depth expected will be in the range of 550m in the link between the islands Evia and Andros. The submarine cables for the link will be manufactured in the Arco Felice plant (Naples), the group’s centre of technological and manufacturing excellence, while land cables will be produced in Pignataro (Naples). Marine cable laying activities will be performed by the Group’s ‘Giulio Verne’ cable-laying vessel. Production of both submarine and land cables will be carried out during 2018-2019. Delivery and commissioning is scheduled for Q3 2019.
LIGHT EFFICIENT DESIGN BRIGHTENS MINEHEAD SEAFRONT A new retrofit LED lamping installation has been completed along Minehead seafront in Somerset. A total of 67 Light Efficient Design LED 8045M 50W retrofit lamps have replaced the 80W corn lamps previously used in the lamp posts lining the seafront. The existing custom caps used with the corn lamps were also replaced with E40 base fittings to suit the new LED retrofit solutions. Taunton Council had for some time been looking for a more efficient lighting solution offering enhanced light quality and energy savings. However, the replacement of the complete fittings in each lamp post was cost prohibitive. As these were clear of corrosion the council decided a retrofit LED re-lamping approach was the most viable solution. Following a thorough market evaluation and a final public opinion poll, Light Efficient Design’s 8045 50W recessed LED retrofit solution was selected by the Council. The overall decision was based on lamp compatibility, quality, light output, energy performance and an industry leading five-year warranty. CONTRACT NEWS ADAPTABLE BUILDING CONTROLS CREATE OPTIMAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Multiple building services at a London free school are being managed from a single control system, following the use of modular I/O from WAGO. John Keats Primary School is a new free school occupying the first two floors of a new residential development in South Bermondsey, London. The school opened to reception pupils in September 2018, and will eventually accommodate up to 450 students up to year six. Neo System Automation Ltd, a WAGO Solution Partner, designed and installed all building controls, cabling and trunking. Four WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 controllers are used, two of which are in mechanical plant rooms handling water heating and air handling. DALI and KNX controllers and I/O modules control all internal and external lighting from control cabinets accessed from the school corridors. The system is modular, allowing additional I/O slices to be easily added to the control node should the system need to be expanded. Pupils at the school will benefit from an enhanced learning environment, with the control systems monitoring conditions to provide optimum lighting, temperature, humidity and CO2 levels, all of which have
been shown to improve concentration and alertness. Room sensors and passive-infrared sensors detect occupancy in rooms and corridors and adapt the conditions accordingly. Certain controls can be manually overridden by school staff, for example to turn off lights to show a film or presentation. WAGO supplied all cabling and trunking, which was prewired, tested and assembled in modular sections offsite at its facility in Rugby. The ease of installation allowed Neo System Automation Ltd to de-skill on-site and reduce labour costs. The pluggable connectors used in the cabling are maintenancefree for the life of the installation, which will reduce future maintenance costs for the school.
TOWER BLOCKS’ FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS RAISED TO TOP CATEGORY PROTECTION WITH AICO Watford Community Housing has completed the installation of Grade D, LD1 fire detection systems in two 16-storey tower blocks using Aico multi-sensor fire alarms and accessories, wirelessly interconnected with Aico’s RadioLINK+ RF technology. Domestic fire alarm installation is guided by BS 5839-6:2013, which identifies both grades of alarm system to use and categories of protection. Watford Community Housing has chosen the highest category, LD1, for the two tower blocks. David Wright, surveying manager at Watford Community Housing explains, “Our tenants’ safety and wellbeing is our highest priority. With this in mind, and due to the known risks around high-rise buildings, we decided that full detection would be appropriate.” The decision to install alarms to the highest category possible was made some time ago, as part of an organisational review of housing stock. The housing association has been using Aico alarms for many years. “We believe the products deliver the best in safety for our tenants,” comments David. “We are also aware of what is required from a maintenance point of view, helping us to minimise the time we spend in the properties.” This was one of the considerations for Watford Community Housing when specifying alarm types, which led them to Aico’s multisensor fire alarm. Three to four multi-sensors have been installed per flat (depending on the number of bedrooms), plus an Ei164e heat alarm in the kitchen and a wall mounted Ei450 alarm control switch. The switch allows residents not only to test all alarms on the system, but also silence them and locate the trigger alarm from a safe, accessible location. The devices within each flat are interconnected wirelessly using Aico RadioLINK+ RF technology.
PLAYFORDS AWARDED CONTRACT FOR PRESTIGIOUS THEATRE Playfords Limited has announced the successful award of the contract for the mechanical and electrical elements associated with the refurbishment and alterations to the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. Theatre Royal Drury Lane is Grade 1 listed, owned by LW Theatres Group Ltd (previously known as Really Useful Theatres Group) who purchased the building 16 years ago. It is open daily and has recently held productions of Shrek, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and 42nd Street which is currently showing. Concerts and events are also held in the auditorium. The contract secured is to replace the whole of the electrical, mechanical and plumbing services throughout the theatre, bringing it up to today’s standards, which will allow the theatre to host a wider variety of shows and productions and will incorporate the latest technology in terms of sound and lighting systems. The contract is Playford’s largest contract award. The contract was won in stiff competition and was secured off the back of a recent success at the Royal Opera House, where Playford completed the MEP services for the open up project. Initial survey works have commenced, and a 3D model of the building will be produced so that a fully coordinated building services installation is created. Construction and installation works on-site will commence in January 2019 following the closure of the latest production at the theatre. Playfords then have 16 months to complete the works prior to the reopening of the theatre in the Autumn of 2020.
MARSHALL-TUFFLEX CABLE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DELIVERS FOR HIGH-PROFILE PROJECT A high-profile multi-million pound construction project has put MarshallTufflex’s Sterling Profile 4 multicompartment PVC-U cable management system to use in a large number of offices and support buildings. The project required a system which met Cat 6a cabling requirements (Sterling Profile 4 meets Cat 7a) as well as those of the Disability Discrimination Act for people with visual impairment, Approved Document Part M and IP4X. HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS LAUNCHED TO MEET CONSTRUCTION GROWTH IN WALES The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has announced two new Higher Apprenticeship programmes in construction management and quantity surveying. The university is working directly with industry partners and in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Construction Wales Innovation Centre (CWIC) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to deliver these programmes at
the Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering from October 2018. The construction industry has been fundamental in the creation of the new Higher Apprenticeships. Gerald Naylor, director of CWIC said, “The development of the two Higher Apprenticeships is a complete collaboration between industry and education partners. An industry task-group was established with representatives from construction

ECA’s ‘Get Skilled’ stand will give young people insight into what it’s like to work in the modern electrotechnical and engineering services sector. Apprentices from the industry will also attend to share and discuss their experiences. The stand will be highly interactive, providing visitors with the chance to try new skills through ‘hands-on’ activities, such as correctly wiring the latest switches and other fittings, and using thermal imaging. There will also be demonstrations on how to install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and an interactive home automation system that uses the latest smart technologies. Attendees will also be able to talk with a range of people working in the industry, who can share their experience of the range of available opportunities, and the financial rewards. Industry partners include JTL and JIB, who will also be providing interactive demonstrations at the event. Skills Cymru is a major careers and skills event for Wales, attracting up to 10,000 people annually. This year’s event will take place on October 10-11 at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff and October 17-18 at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.

ight commercial vehicles (vans) within the workplace are governed in accordance with taxation policy and regulation outlined by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). With an ongoing focus on compliant usage, subjective grey areas in legislation and eye-watering tax penalties, it is vital that a business and its drivers address how they use their vans day-to-day. Following a recent survey, ABAX shockingly discovered that over half of employees who drive a vehicle for business purposes are unaware of HMRC regulation and risk tax penalties because they are misusing their business vehicle. In the UK, 99.8% of business-owned vans are on a ‘nil-benefit’ system. This system is chosen because it is a simple and cost-effective way to operate a van fleet. On a nil-benefit system, the van should only complete business trips, insignificant private trips and commutes. And here lies three main problems for a business.
How can you stop your fleet being misused? As completing significant private mileage on a nil-benefit system is not allowed, it is in HMRC’s best interest to make sure a business does not choose this system and exploit it. Therefore, a business must prove to HMRC that no significant private trips are taking place. To clarify, it is not up to HMRC to prove you are misusing your fleet, it is up to you to prove that you are not. HMRC recommends that you achieve compliance by: Breakdown of the tax penalty faced by both business and employee

If you are not are implementing all three recommendations, then your business and your drivers may be at risk from HMRC penalties.
What does the term ‘insignificant’ mean? To help understand the term ‘insignificant’, HMRC provides a definition and some ‘real-life’ examples. It refers to insignificant as ‘too small or unimportant to be worth consideration,’ with the examples of: •T aking an old mattress to the tip a couple of times a year •M aking a slight detour to purchase a newspaper at a local shop on the way to work •C alling in at the dentist on the way home from work. However, these examples are very subjective. What you judge to be insignificant may be very different from your drivers or an HMRC inspector, which is not ideal in legislation. Welcome to an HMRC grey area. The best thing you can do is be clear in your vehicle policy what trips can and cannot be taken.
What happens if your drivers complete significant private trips? Let’s say that you have one driver who has been caught by HMRC completing significant private trips in a van that is not taxed to do so. They and you now face a tax penalty, a penalty that can be backdated for up to six full years. Yes, the tables below are correct. One driver completing unauthorised trips and the total penalty could exceed £35,000 – an eye-watering amount that will have a huge impact on any business.

For problems so easily fixed, is it worth the risk? “HMRC has implemented a taskforce with the sole purpose of recuperating lost benefitin-kind taxation.”
HMRC has implemented a taskforce with the sole purpose of recuperating lost benefit-inkind taxation. It is doing this by increasing its roadside vehicle checks and business records checks (BRCs). One of its most effective methods is to take photographs of vans found in public carparks outside of usual business hours, and then compare these vans to the records of the business. Additionally, as HMRC continues to go digital, technology is shaping the way it does things and it is becoming more effective. A huge problem regarding detailed mileage records is that they are time-consuming and extensive. To be 100% compliant, there are 14 pieces of information that HMRC requires: • Vehicle details including: vehicle registration, make, model, fuel type and engine capacity • The driver • The trip date • The trip start and end location, including postcode • The purpose (place/companies visited) • The start and closing mileage • Total business mileage. Recording all this information with pen and paper accurately is not practical for a profitable business. So just as HMRC is going digital, businesses are taking advantage of technology and implementing compliant vehicle tracking systems to record this information automatically and accurately. This immediately ticks two of the three HMRC recommendations, and provides a business with more control, reduced risk and improved fleet efficiency, so much so the investment is likely to be cost neutral. he problems of flickering and poor dimming range are well-documented issues for installers when it comes to LED dimmers. Now Scolmore has come up with an intelligent dimmer module – Click Dual Mode Dimmer – that not only eliminates flickering, but is much easier to control than regular dimmers, and is essentially two dimmers in one; offering the installer maximum compatibility. With a choice of dimming modes – leading or trailing edge – installers can choose the mode that works most effectively with the LED lights they are using. The electronics inside some LED lamps have better compatibility with trailing edge and some are better in leading edge. Flicker at the bottom end of the dimming range is quite common when dimming LEDs. By incorporating a minimum brightness setting, the new Dual Mode Dimmer Module allows the minimum brightness to be adjusted, so that any flicker at the bottom end of the dimming range can be trimmed out. Some LED dimmers can also be quite complicated to install, especially when changing the settings such as dimming mode and minimum brightness, sometimes requiring the installer to perform a specific switching sequence using the dimmer knob. Scolmore has made this much easier by positioning two small switches on the back of the module. Switch one allows the minimum brightness to be adjusted; switch two allows the dimming module to be adjusted. Their position on the back of the module also makes it easier to change the dimmer settings without removing the module from the plate and so saving installation time.
The Dual Mode Dimmer Module also includes electronic thermal overload protection, so that if the module gets too hot it will cut out without damaging the internal electronics, allowing the module to cool down. This means that once it has cooled, it can be used again, with no need to replace the module. With some dimmers, the overload protection will reset the dimmer to factory settings, resulting in the installer having to be called out to reprogramme the dimmer. With the Scolmore module, the thermal overload protection does not have any effect on the installation settings, which means that the dimmer will remain set in the ideal compatibility settings for the LED lamps, as originally set by the installer. The small size of the new dimmer module means they can be placed above/below each other on multi-tier plates. They will fit into 25mm back boxes when used on raised plates and into 35mm back boxes when used on flat plates. By addressing some of the key frustrations of LED dimmers, and introducing a product that will help contribute to a saving of installation time on-site, Scolmore believes its new intelligent dimming module will be in high demand by installers.

ILLUMINATING HISTORY Building controls specialist B.E.G. explains how it tackled a sensitive architectural challenge at St. John’s College to introduce an intelligent lighting solution.

of the University of Cambridge, which is ranked fourth in the Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, was founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII. The college’s alumni include winners of ten Nobel Prizes, seven prime ministers, 12 archbishops, two princes and even three Saints.

PROJECT FOCUS Well-deserved refurb The ancient college, which has some parts dating back to 1200s, required a lighting control solution as part of the refurbishment of the New Court building. The controls would be used to reduce operating costs, whilst also having to meet the needs of its architectural sensitivities and minimise light pollution. Cambridge-based Baulogic Limited, which specialises in the design, installation and maintenance of building control solutions, in conjunction with B.E.G., carried out a detailed site survey. Taking into consideration the building’s unusual design, the company selected the B.E.G. wall-mounted indoor 180 KNX detector. B.E.G., founded in 1975, provides one of the widest ranges of presence and motion detectors in the controls market today. The B.E.G. 180 KNX sensor was ideal in situations such as this, as it is recommended for use in corridors, archive rooms and conference rooms. The occupancy detector offers full lighting flexibility with four operation modes available: fully automatic, semi-automatic, slave mode and occupancyindependent regulating mode. There are also up to three switching channels which can select whether the sensor is daylight-depending or not. In addition, values and follow-up times can be adjusted for all channels. It has a burn-in function with adjustable burn-in time from 1-100 hours, and the motion LED can be activated or deactivated via ETS parameter, communication object, or remote control. The detector has a choice of covers in five different colours, ensuring it can blend in with any décor.
Delicate touch Mark Gedrych, director at Baulogic Limited, says, “Most of the lobby spaces on either side of the central spiral staircase have tall cathedral ceilings,
with archways between each area, neither of which we were allowed to touch. “That’s why we selected the B.E.G. wall-mounted KNX 180 detectors for these areas, mounted at 2.4m off the floor, and chose frames that were colourmatched to the paint colour which had been selected by interior designers Eve Waldren Design. “The overall effect is very pleasing because the detectors blend nicely into the renovated 1830’s neo-Gothic spaces whilst still providing excellent coverage to catch Fellows and guests as they exit their rooms surrounding the lobby spaces on all sides.”
Making savings In a few areas, B.E.G. were able to employ the ceiling-mounted detector PD4 KNX SM, which gives coverage of up to 24m diameter. The B.E.G. PD4 KNX SM offers very similar benefits to the B.E.G. 180 KNX occupancy detector. The main difference with the PD4-KNX-SM is the fact it is ceiling mounted and its extended detection area, meaning it is most suitable for monitoring large areas like underground garages, gyms, warehouses, loading ramps, and halls. When fine tuning the detection areas, the strategic decision was made to fit some detectors with lens shields. This prevented lights being triggered when people are just walking past, as opposed to entering an area. Shields are intelligently designed to slip over an existing lens, so they do not change the overall appearance of a detector. The shields can be modified to give clearly defined detection areas. The shields are seen as a great addition because the lights come on only when needed, thus saving energy when not required.

STRONG FOUNDATIONS In the face of the skills shortage threatening the sector, Rexel outlines the story of three young tradespeople whom it has helped find a future in the electrical industry.
I
nvesting in the future of the electrical trade is a focus for many within the industry – and an issue that has only garnered more attention since the announcement of Brexit. Earlier this year, research undertaken by the Federation of Master Builders revealed in its quarterly report that the demand for skilled electricians outweighed supply. Combined with a similar shortage in other skilled professions, such as plumbers, carpenters and bricklayers, this poses a problem for the government as it tries to reach its target of constructing hundreds of thousands of houses annually. Rexel has been keen to invest in supporting and developing new talent eager to be part of the industry. One particular example comes from Greater Manchester, where Rexel has committed to supporting 11 apprentices, including the sponsorship of three budding electricians who have not had the easiest path into work.
This scheme has been made possible by working in partnership with the Re:allies Merchant Framework – a not for profit national partnership that provides smart procurement and asset management solutions for social housing landlords – and saw Rexel provide funding for the three young men through electrical apprenticeships.
Local talent The three apprentices, Wayne Lango, Alex Tyrie and Will Doleman, were all recruited by the charity Re:vision – a subsidiary charity of Procure Plus Holdings, part of the Re:allies Merchant Framework – through its partnership with local employment groups, YES Manchester, the Broughton Trust and Salford Search. These local employment groups have worked with the three candidates to remove barriers that were preventing them from getting into work. They have supported them in preparing for interview

and to sustain employment. Today all three apprentices are working for construction companies on the Procure Plus Framework. “The shortage of talent coming into our industry is not a new concern for us, but one that has definitely been highlighted during the conversations around increased need for new homes in the UK and concerning Brexit and potential limitations being placed on free movement from the EU across our borders,” says Wayne Bridgehouse, head of facilities management. “At Rexel, we have always supported those with a keen interest in the electrical world, both within our own wholesaling sphere or the wider electrical industry. This latest investment demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the development and progression of our industry.”
Alex Tyrie’s story Upon leaving school, Alex was keen to undertake an apprenticeship – but after a rocky start to his career he felt let down and his confidence was very low. He sought support form Salford Search and the Broughton Trust, where they worked hard to rebuild Alex’s confidence and put him forward to Re:vision for an electrical apprenticeship opportunity with A B Electrical. Alex started his apprenticeship on January 3 this year. Re:vision liaised with Salford College and arranged for him to be signed up to complete his apprenticeship. Alex is now working as part of the team that are improving the housing stock of Salix Homes in Salford. As with all Rexel sponsored apprentices, Alex has received a tool kit and will continue to receive mentoring support for Re:vision. Simon Crewe, the commercial manager at A B Electrical, says: “The
work undertaken by Re:vision with its local employment group partners is key to sourcing candidates from the local communities where we work. We are delighted with how Alex has fitted into the team and confident he will have a great career with us in the future.” Alex adds, “This opportunity is great for me as I have always wanted to be an electrician. I live in a Salix Homes property and I’m proud to be improving other tenant’s homes in Salford and putting some good back into the community.” Re:vision operations director, Fiona Sharp, says, “Alex is not unusual, we come across many young people who have completed a diploma and still been unable to secure employment. As a result of the funding we have received from Rexel, we are able to make a difference and support employers and their apprentices, putting a stop to wasted talent.”

Wayne Lango’s story Today Wayne is an electrical apprentice with Mears working to improve properties for Northwards Housing through the Procure Plus Framework, a job he always wanted after watching his father work as an electrician. But his journey to success has not been straightforward. After struggling to obtain sustainable employment, Wayne signed up to YES Manchester for help. With financial support from Re:vision, YES Manchester was able to help Wayne by giving him one-to-one coaching, which boosted his confidence. After supporting him, Wayne impressed at an interview with Mears and started his electrical apprenticeship in September 2017. When Wayne started his apprenticeship, he was delighted to receive a tool kit from Re:vision made possible through the Rexel sponsorship. He says, “Getting the apprenticeship was amazing. I am determined to work hard and be worthy of the faith that everyone at YES, Re:vison, Rexel and Mears have shown in me. The tool kit is fantastic, it is just what I needed. I know I would never have had this opportunity without all this support.”
Will Doleman’s story When Will started to work with YES Manchester, he had struggled to decide on a career. They gave him advice and guidance and Will’s confidence grew. He decided he was interested in an electrical apprenticeship, so YES helped Will with his maths and English and he passed the test required. Due to his lack of experience, they also suggested that he complete work experience. After impressing Mears, he was asked to apply for an electrical apprenticeship and is now an electrical apprentice with Mears. Paula Law, recruitment manager at Mears, says, “We are delighted with Will, we know that candidates put forward by YES and Re:vision have had a lot of support and are always well prepared for work when they come to us.” Will really appreciates all the support he has received from YES, Re:vison and the sponsorship from Rexel, saying: “All the work I did with YES and the preinterview with Re:vison really helped to settle my nerves; I hadn’t had many previous interviews. When I was offered the work trial, I was determined to show Mears that I was hard working and reliable. WHERE’S MY MONEY, MAN? Lee Murphy of Pandle, a cloud bookkeeping software for small businesses, looks at how to tackle the late payment culture.
I
t can be a daunting time; having completed a job to a high standard, paying meticulous attention to customer care, you are left waiting weeks or even months to get paid. The number of smaller construction sector firms at risk of collapse because of late payments is on the rise. According to recent research by the Prompt Payment Directory, many business owners cannot afford to pay themselves a salary because of the financial strain caused by late payments. It is a national problem highlighted by the collapse of construction giant Carillion earlier this year. The company was revealed to have spent £952m on local suppliers in 2016, relying on an extensive network of small firms who were forced to accept payment terms of 120 days. In the wake of its failure, Carillion is believed to have left up to 30,000 small businesses with unpaid bills, having a knock-on effect on their ability to continue trading. Those businesses have been jeopardised simply because they had not been paid by a client many had presumed reliable and solvent.
Dire straights The Prompt Payment Directory gives some insight into the effect Carillion’s collapse has had on the construction sector. Of the 400 small construction firms surveyed, 74% reported to have been on the brink of bankruptcy or liquidation or said they could be soon due to late payments. That figure is up by 30% on the previous year. Dealing with late payers may seem a challenge, particularly if you are a oneman-band working for a corporate client, but it needn’t be so. By taking steps to ensure your customers know when and where to pay you, you can instantly reduce how long it takes for invoices to be settled – after all, not all late payments are made with cynical intentions. All too often it is easy to focus on doing the day job and keep work coming in and leave the business of chasing down invoices to another day. Yet business administration, from sending out bills to forecasting cashflow, is as much a key component of a healthy thriving business as having a strong workflow.
Bonuses and penalties You may wish to include details of penalties for late payers in your payments policy. This could be a financial fine, or you may want to refuse any repeat business until a payment is made. You can encourage early payments by including bonuses, such as a discount or a free follow-up visit for customers who settle early. Not only does this boost your business coffers but builds customer loyalty.
Reminders and non-payers

There are plenty of tools available online, many of them free of charge, that will help you get organised and keep track of who owes you what and when. Many of them are even free, such as Pandle, which can automate the process of chasing and reminding customers for you, something that we see invariably having an immediate impact getting debtors to pay more quickly.
Payments policy Creating a payments policy that can be agreed up front with clients will help head off many problems before they arise. If you have a late payments policy in place, then you have the authority to enforce the rules. Asking clients to sign a payment policy at the start of a contract will ensure that they are aware of your terms and conditions. Include specific payments dates – these may vary depending on what business you are in – as well as details of charges and interest for late payments. Make sure your invoice includes all the correct information – help your clients to pay you by telling them how and where you want to be paid.
Phased payments If you are taking on a large job that could span months or one that involves you incurring costs up front, make sure you ask for a deposit or phased payments – no matter how reliable this customer has been in the past. It’s well worth considering a deposit to make sure a project goes through, ensuring you at least get some money if the work falls through. Likewise, phased payments for longer-term projects will ensure a healthy balance sheet.
There is nothing worse than calling a client to demand payment only to find you have the wrong details or perhaps missed out their purchase order number and they are using this as a tactic to keep delaying payment. Be clear of your facts before you begin sending reminders and demanding payment. Remember to stay professional and courteous; being abrasive and rude will not encourage a client to pay up. If a client continues to refuse to pay after reminders are sent, you may want to refuse any new work until bills have been settled. Remember to keep a note of nonpayers, this could help you in several years to come.
Dealing with non-payers If you hate chasing invoices, consider selling your invoices and getting someone else to do the chasing for you. This is called ‘factoring’ – it comes at a high cost, but it does mean you get paid on time and don’t get involved with chasing lots of invoices. Any decent tradesman wants to keep a good relationship with their customers, but chances are you will have to get tough with non-payers at some point. If you have people who won’t pay, then lots of phone calls and emails are the starting point and clearly, turning up at their house for domestic clients works well. After that it is legal channels, which sadly can be slow moving and involve more cost. If you are clear with customers about your payments policy and set up an automated reminder system that prompts them of when and where to pay, you will immediately cut how long it takes for invoices to be settled. speaker between joists and mounting a TV bracket, to reliably terminating and testing CAT 5/6 network cables. Key points covered during the day include: • Health and safety basics • Audio set-up, speaker positioning and room acoustics • Speaker and display installation techniques • CAT cable termination • Introduction to lighting technologies • Introduction to home automation controls. This session teaches attendees all they need to know to form a basic understanding of the technology and how to implement it into a project in the custom install industry. This knowledge will then be applied via practical elements in order to pass the session. This is completed using an installation essentials tool kit that is provided at the start of the day. SMARTER SECURITY Neil Baldwin, sales director at ESP, looks at how the rise in multi-family living is providing opportunities for switched-on contractors when considering home security solutions for this new generation of householders.
M
ulti-generational households are on the rise, fuelled by the increasing cost of residential care for the elderly – currently between £29,000 and £39,000 per year – and the inability of many young people to get onto the property ladder – house prices have increased by more than 55% in the last decade. As a result, many of today’s households are accommodating up to three generations of one family, with parents, children and grandparents all living under the same roof. When it comes to security, this new demographic of dwellers provides contractors with increased opportunities to upgrade and/or make additions to existing security solutions to cover the broader range of requirements of a multi-family household; in particular the aspect of assisted living that comes with elderly or vulnerable residents. Smart technology is making it easier than ever for installers to come up with solutions to satisfy these changing needs, with a range of products that are both easy to install and straightforward to operate. There are now smart products available to provide all levels of security, from basic security floodlights, to CCTV systems and, more recently, even door bells.
Essential protection
Can the changing demands of today’s security sector be met by smart solutions?
For those customers with no external security measures in place to protect their properties, the installation of a simple camera and security floodlight system could be the answer to providing basic security cover. There are a range of products available, and a complete, all-in-one, energy-efficient LED PIR floodlight system is suitable not just for securing domestic properties, but also for areas around offices and industrial or agricultural units.
A Wi-Fi version, such as the GuardCam Deco from ESP, offers even more features, while still remaining a cost-effective solution. Camera-ready Estimated to be worth in the region of £2.4 billion and still growing, the UK security market is big business. With CCTV accounting for the biggest slice of the sector – a 50% share – this represents a significant opportunity for installers, who will already possess the necessary skills to operate in this complementary and growing sector. With the focus on smart solutions, wireless CCTV systems are becoming an increasingly popular choice and are a quick and easy solution to updating a customer’s security provision. There are a range of wire-free CCTV kits available, offering speed and ease of installation and operation, with remote monitoring possible via a smartphone or tablet, using the relevant app. We are continually being asked by customers about Wi-Fi CCTV solutions and have been developing our product offer to meet this growing demand. Customers can opt from a variety of levels of sophistication and price ranges to suit their clients’ needs. To protect the health of their customers’ electrical circuits, contractors must go above and beyond to ensure they are adopting the most cutting-

By analysing this data and learning how and when the energy is being consumed across the building, a clearer picture of the infrastructure’s overall health can be collected – providing alerts to any faults, power overloads or even any energy waste. Connected sensors increase the reliability, efficiency and condition of key electrical assets by helping to monitor and measure currents, voltages, power factors and energy. This is necessary not only for the accurate monitoring of a company’s energy consumption, but also as a means to maintain the health of its equipment.
Going above and beyond The cost of maintenance and servicing, particularly around switchgear is a universal concern for building managers. However, rather than resulting from the innate challenges of the building itself, high costs more often stem from failings in the current maintenance schedule. This is where a contractor’s ability to implement the latest technologies can help.
Traditionally, building managers have followed a maintenance plan composed of regular, scheduled check-ups and corrective repairs once a breakdown occurs. The main drawback of this system is its inattentiveness. Equipment is checked at a set time periodically and regardless of its actual health. Wear and tear, damage and faults can certainly be detected using this approach, but it is mostly left to chance whether they are discovered before the damage is done. In the worst case, faults and electrical damage are found after the event and must be repaired, at great cost and disruption. Recently, however, more effective ‘predictive’ approaches have emerged. These utilise connected sensors to detect faults, and use environmental data to predict when an asset will likely fail. Corrective action is then organised automatically before, and not after, business disruption is caused. The predictive approach prevents asset and facility downtime, and can result in considerable savings and efficiencies. Electrical contractors and installers ought to be using connected devices at the circuit level. In doing so, they can help ensure the safety and longevity of their customers’ assets, resulting in happier clients and stronger business relationships. CLEAT CAUTION The incorrect interpretation of short-circuit test reports can result in inappropriate cable cleats being specified and installed. Richard Shaw, managing director of cable cleat innovator and manufacturer, Ellis, explains the situation and what needs to be done to rectify this.
T
he role of cable cleats in any electrical cable installation is of paramount importance. They are there to prevent costly and dangerous damage to cables and those around them in short circuit situations – in fact, the only thing underspecified cleats do in a short circuit situation is add to the shrapnel. Third party short-circuit testing still tends to be accepted as the best way to effectively prove a cleat does what it claims. Unfortunately, the validity of this process is being jeopardised by the fact that the headline figure on such reports is all too frequently taken to mean that the products tested deliver the same level of short-circuit withstand irrespective of the installation. This is blatantly incorrect. You cannot say that a specific cable cleat has a short-circuit withstand of 150kA without qualifying the statement by putting it into context in terms of the cable size, cable arrangement and how often the cleats need to be spaced.
Closer inspection Take for example a recent report I was given, which had a headline figure that alluded to the product withstanding a peak short-circuit of 138kA. Upon full reading it became clear this was simply not the case. The test rig was set up with four trefoil circuits in parallel, and while the overall fault level was 138kA, each of the four trefoil groups only saw a quarter of the fault, meaning they only withstood the equivalent of 34.5kA. The ease with which this report could have been misinterpreted is clear, and if you imagine it being reviewed by an over-eager salesman and an ill-informed specifier, it’s even easier to see a project being incorrectly specified. Worryingly, if the product in question was installed on a system with a peak short-circuit over 34.5kA, just a quarter of the report’s 138kA headline figure, it would provide as much protection as a plastic cable tie. This example clearly highlights the need for third party test reports to be carefully studied. The best way to do this is to ask two simple questions. Firstly, is the product tested the same as the product being offered? Secondly, is the test installation similar to the project installation? If the answers are both positive, then the product should be suitable.
Cable cleats prevent damage to cables in short circuit situations
Get specific If, though, you want absolute certainty, then ask for a project specific test. This is third party testing at its most extreme, and is the only way to guarantee that the cleat being installed is suitable for the installation. It does need to be noted that the certificate this delivers is specific to the installation, its fault level, spacing and cable configuration. The reason for this is that a cleat’s short circuit withstand is only valid for a cable diameter equal to or greater than the diameter of the cable used in the test. So if the project in question ends up using smaller cables than those referred to in the test, then the force between the cables is proportionally greater, meaning the certificate is inappropriate and the cleats will not provide the protection they are installed to give.
Ideally, project specific testing would be supported by the adoption of cable cleats as short circuit protection devices, which would automatically give them the same degree of importance as fuses or circuit breakers. The argument for this isn’t as outlandish as it first sounds. In the event of a fault, the forces between cables reach their peak in the first quarter cycle, which is the point that cleats earn their crust. In contrast, circuit breakers typically interrupt the fault after three or even five cycles by which time, if the cleats are underspecified, the cables will be long gone. And let’s face it. You wouldn’t buy a new car fitted with seatbelts that ‘might’ work, so why take the risk when specifying cable cleats? Ellis, ellispatents.co.uk

re you involved in the specification and installation of electric vehicle (EV) supply equipment under the various grant schemes, and do you understand the changes in section 722 (18th Edition)? In particular, with reference to fault protection using Type A residual current devices (RCD) and residual direct current detection devices (RDC DD) for fault monitoring – how do you identify equipment and products that meet the new requirements? And what do these changes actually mean in practice?

straightforward enough, but there are several points to check before purchasing and installing an EV charge point. • Read the small print first: the government’s minimum technical specification for EV charge points states, ‘In cases of apparent inconsistency in installation requirements, the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) shall take precedence’, i.e. the current BS EN 61851-1 standard does not include the 18th Edition requirements. 722.531.2.101 Mode 3 charging using Type A RCDs requires the provision of measures for protection against DC fault currents, either separately or included in the charge point. •R elevant standards: for the 18th Edition requirements, refer to IEC 61851-1 February 2017 and IEC 62955 published in March 2018 (adopted in June by BSI). IEC 62955 covers RDC DDs for use in Mode 3 charging applications as referred to in IEC 61851-1 2017.

Check that the equipment you are intending to purchase meets the latest IEC standards. Does the EV charge point specification refer to the IEC 61851-1 February 2017? (Check the date on the manufacturer’s documentation and the Declaration of Conformity.) See Reg 133.1.1. For EV equipment manufactured to BS EN 61851-1, refer to the manufacturer for advice and recommendations before purchasing. Reg 133.1.3 EV RCD (RDC-PD explained below) can be used to meet the revised requirements.
RCD, RDC or RCM? It is important to understand the associated terminology – do not confuse devices designed for ‘detecting and monitoring’ residual currents with devices suitable for ‘residual current protection’. The new standards refer to several product formats with very similar abbreviations. See Note in 411.1.

Associated terminology Monitoring and detection devices do not provide protection, e.g. a protection device such as an RCD, under specified fault conditions, must disconnect and ‘isolate’ the circuit. Conversely, a contactor controlled by an RCM can disconnect a circuit, but it does not provide isolation/protection. RCD is a generic term for a device providing, for example, 30 mA residual current protection and isolation. It must meet one or more of the following EN/IEC standards; 61008-1, 61009-1, 60947-2 or 62423. RCM is a device that monitors residual currents but does not provide protection. RCMs do not meet the requirements for the detection of 6 mA DC fault currents. RDC-DD is a generic term for an RDC-M device providing 6 mA DC fault current disconnection for Mode 3 charging applications with a separate Type A RCD providing protection. RDC-PD is a device that incorporates 6 mA DC monitoring, detection and 30 mA Type A residual current protection in one unit, meeting the requirements of 722.531.2.101 Mode 3 charging with Type A RCDs (see table above.)
Installation inspection and testing Equipment must meet the required standards and be supported by appropriate paperwork from the manufacturer.
Inspection – Regulation 642 See Regulations 113.1, 133.1.1, 511.1, 511.2 – the current versions of BSEN standards relating to Mode 3 charging do not cover the requirements in 722.531.2.101 to use Type A RCDs. Refer to IEC 61851-1 2017 and BS IEC 62955 2018 until the revised BSEN standards are published.
Testing additional protection – Regulation 643.8 Where measures for additional protection rely on the interaction of the RDC-MD supplied in the charge point and a separate RCD either mounted in the charge point or remotely, an agreement must be reached on

the minimum number of tests required to prove the effectiveness of the protection, i.e. Regulation 643.8 only covers the verification by testing of the RCD. For example, EV charge points supplied with an RDC-MD + contactor for 6 mA DC disconnection and a 30 mA Type A RCD for protection. The checks and tests need to prove: • The RDC-MD + contactor disconnects the circuit in the presence of a smooth DC residual current. • The 30 mA RCD will trip within 40 mS at 150 mA (5 x I∆n) – see 643.8 • AC residual currents: RDC-MD + contactor must not operate before the RCD (in the presence of AC residual current, the RCD must trip for effective circuit isolation). The effectiveness of the RCD to perform its safety function relies on the correct performance of RDC-MD.

So, what do the standards propose? Regulation 132.8 states, ‘The protective devices shall operate at values of current, voltage and time which are suitably related to the characteristics of the circuits and to the possibility of danger’. With regard to RDC-MDs associated with separate RCDs: • IEC62955/RDC-MD: Table 2 specifies maximum break times for DC fault currents and Table 3 specifies nonoperating times when subjected to AC residual currents. • DC residual currents: RDC-MD must disconnect the supply, to maintain the integrity of the 30 mA AC protection – again, see Table 2. • AC residual currents: the RDC-MD must not operate before the RCD – see Table 3. • Suitable test instruments: countries working to the requirements of CENELEC had to adopt the revised IEC 61851-1 2017 standard before July 2017 (old standard withdrawn). Some test instrument manufacturers already advertise specific test features to cover Mode 3 charging installations. Check that reference is made to the 2017 edition of IEC 61851-1.
Business pressures to complete projects within budget and on time should not – but can – impact on safety aspects. The EV market is relatively new in comparison to other markets, and developing fast. Regulations, standards and suppliers must change and adapt quickly to cover potential safety issues. Check with the various associated trade bodies, IET and standards organisations to keep up-to-date with the subjects covered in this article*. In the absence of recommendations for testing (IET/COPs etc), the manufacturer of the charge point and the ‘responsible person’ for testing and signing off the installation will need to agree what tests are required to verify that the installation is safe for use. This information should be attached to the Installation Test Certificate for future reference. As EV charging equipment ages, there is an increased risk of faults developing due to general wear and tear. Individual users are in direct contact with the ground, may have damp hands or be using the equipment in wet conditions, and therefore any electric shock is likely to be fatal. The changes introduced in 722, when applied correctly, will improve the reliability and safety performance of EV charging installations.

DECIPHERING THE REGS Paul Dawson from electrical accessories and consumables specialist, Niglon, discusses the implications of 18th Edition guidance on circuit protection when it comes to the use of surge protection devices (SPDs).
T
he talk of the industry at the moment is very much surrounding the changes that have been made in the new edition of the wiring regulations, published in July for compliance from January 1, 2019. A few of the elements we were expecting to be included from the consultation document have been edited out of the final 18th Edition requirements, while the area of circuit protection has come under additional scrutiny. These revisions have not come as a surprise to many, however. Following the distressing events at Grenfell Tower last year, electrical safety has never been higher on the political agenda or more prominent in public consciousness. While the additional circuit protection requirements may seem onerous, therefore, in fact there is an appetite from end-‑users for improved electrical safety, which creates an opportunity for contractors to embrace a more robust specification and incorporate the extra cost within their installation fee.
Surge protection One key focus for circuit protection in the 18th Edition is surge protection to reduce the risks associated with transient voltages. As the periods of hot dry weather followed by storm conditions have demonstrated this year, the ‘extreme weather events’ associated with climate change are predicted to make the occurrence of transient voltages more frequent, due to lightning. Consequently, we need to protect buildings and their occupants against the associated risks. To address this, the 18th Edition stipulates that installers should assess whether there is a serious risk of injury or loss of life from electrical surges caused by transient voltages and install SPDs if the risk is considered high. The new regulations do not make installation of SPDs mandatory, but don’t be fooled into thinking that this guidance can simply be overlooked – it can’t. A close reading of the 18th Edition highlights that this is much more than an advisory to include SPDs in the specification. Installers must carry out a comprehensive risk assessment if they decide not to install SPDs into an installation.
This includes a calculation that requires knowledge of the length of the cables entering the building from overhead lines, from underground networks and from the final electricity supply point. It is likely that this information will only be available from the relevant utility company, which will probably involve applying for the figures and waiting for a response. It may even incur an administration fee. Indeed, the stipulations for the risk assessment and information required to side-step installation of an SPD are so wide-ranging and time-consuming that purchase and installation of the SPDs required for the property is by far the less expensive option. Of course, many contractors already fit SPDs as a best practice approach to electrical safety and the devices themselves are nothing new. The difference now is that the electrical contractor must carry out a comprehensive risk assessment to justify why the decision has been taken not

CIRCUIT PROTECTION budget, the increased complexity of the risk assessment and mandatory documentation is still likely to be more onerous than simply adding SPDs to the specification and installation programme.

to install an SPD in order to avoid including this on the spec. For a domestic property, it’s clear that the cost of a relatively low-priced safety item is a small consideration as compared to the time required for the risk assessment, or indeed the potential safety threat to the end-user. For commercial premises, meanwhile, where the cost of multiple SPDs may have more impact on the overall
Arc fault detection The other major talking point when it comes to circuit protection guidance in the 18th Edition is the recommendation that an arc fault detection device (AFDD) should be installed as a means of providing additional protection against fire caused by arc faults. The key word in that sentence is ‘recommendation’, however, and it’s important to note that there is no mandatory requirement to install an AFDD in the new wiring regulations, nor any compulsory risk assessment. It’s vital to clarify this point because, even in the short space of time since the 18th Edition was published, there has been a degree of panic and scaremongering about the implications of incorporating AFDDs in every new installation. The size and cost of AFDD units in comparison to
standard circuit protection devices means that this would be an extremely onerous requirement for most standard domestic and commercial projects, which may be why the regulations have recommended rather than required this change. Though a risk assessment for AFDDs has not been stipulated by the updated wiring regulations, the decisions about whether or not to follow this recommendation should be taken on a project by project basis aligned to the level of risk for a particular environment. For example, buildings that are more difficult to evacuate, such as hospitals and care homes, carry a greater risk to life from an electrical fire. Sites where some areas are unmanned and a fire may go undetected for longer should also be considered higher risk. This area of circuit protection guidance has been introduced to the wiring regulations specifically to reduce electrical fire safety risk but we must remain mindful that existing circuit protection requirements and electrical standards already provide a high level of safety. In fact, the AFDD guidance in the 18th Edition can be seen as an indication to electrical suppliers that AFDDs may become mandatory at some point in the future, so contractors can expect to see AFDD technology develop, with the advent of smaller and less expensive units over the next few years. SKILLING UP Steve Martin, ECA director of technical, reports the findings from recent roundtable talks about the level of training and expertise in the structured data cabling industry.
A
panel of leading training providers from across the electrotechnical industry met under Chatham House rules and shared their insights on the status of training and qualifications in the structured data cabling industry, during a series of roundtable talks hosted by ECA. The panel identified several challenges for the growing sector, including a perceived reluctance by some businesses to adapt to a rapidly evolving market and varying levels of quality in training programmes tailored to emerging roles.
New courses for new roles The panel agreed that, while many already work to high standards, some mainstream electrical contractors appear to be behind the curve when it comes to training. Contractors with widely varying degrees of expertise and certification often undertake the same data cabling duties, with predictably mixed levels of quality and client satisfaction. Approaches to training are inconsistent across the industry in the delivery of content. It was identified that there is an ongoing trend of condensing skills and guided learning hours as much as possible. Whilst many do a great job, the current system fails to monitor the quality of training being delivered across the piste. According to a report[1] from TMR Research, the structured data cabling sector is set to grow exponentially by 2025, driven by high demand for new infrastructure enabling high-speed internet connections. This demand has had the added effect of a surge in the construction of data centres. The market is also being driven by widespread efforts to reduce carbon emissions, modernise communications networks, and a growing demand for data to be held ‘in the cloud’.
A way forward? Comprehensive reform and industrywide culture change are the first steps towards a system of teaching, training and assessment that could raise standards and provide the fast-growing data cabling sector with guarantees of high levels of competence. But first, the industry and employers need to work together to decide what specific occupations the sector needs.

There are many potential occupations within the field of digital infrastructure. While many are well-covered by training, others are not. Electricians and other operatives in the sector need to be guided in the right direction, to develop the skills and gain the qualifications to meet their specific role. Contractors will need to be multiskilled to harness data, fibre and power. Purely electrical contractors who subcontract data package work to specialists will no longer be viable. Part of the culture change could come in the form of revised standards for Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) cards, seen as the industry gold standard for electrotechnical contractors as proof of their credentials. The roundtable attendees agreed that new ECS card requirements could cover minimum standards for skilled occupations in the data cabling sector by 2020.
While schemes such as the network cabling apprenticeship trailblazer are already providing clearer pathways to qualification, more can be done to make a career in the structured data cabling sector appealing, exciting, and show clear potential for progression. The risk of inaction is high: qualifications, and the organisations that provide them, could lose credibility. We could find ourselves in an industry where a qualification is, alarmingly, no guarantee of competence. This would undermine the hard work of many, and let those who put profit before quality slip through the cracks. If everyone raises their game to the same level, we can provide an open, transparent platform for training. The group will continue building on these recommendations and developing viable, implementable solutions to the issues highlighted during the discussion. ECA, eca.co.uk

REASSURINGLY RECYCLED Marshall-Tufflex talks to ECN about how it is championing the use of PVC-U for cable management specifications.
C
utting the amount of plastic waste the UK produces is a challenging task, with the major focus being on single-use plastics. However, there has been a quiet revolution taking place in the PVC-U cable management sector. Marshall-Tufflex has been using recycled plastics in its trunking solutions for more than 20 years. Through clever, high-tech engineering, decades of production experience and exhaustive research and development at its headquarters in Hastings, East Sussex, Marshall-Tufflex now leads the field – by a clear margin – in producing cable management systems that are, on average, comprised of 80% recycled plastic. For some profiles, this figure is routinely 100%.
Driving change It is a fantastic achievement and a great environmental story, preventing the equivalent of 300 double decker buses worth of plastic going to landfill each year while still offering products that set industry standards for design, quality and installation. But Marshall-Tufflex doesn’t want to stop there; it is inviting the entire supply chain to join it in moving towards a minimum threshold of 50% recycled material in all cable management solutions. Staying in the know But what do electrical contractors need to know about the 50% initiative and the use of recycled material? For installers, there are a number of business benefits – using PVC-U cable management systems manufactured from recycled material allows electrical contractors to position themselves as environmentally aware, differentiate themselves from competitors, and open up new business channels with environmentally conscious customers. Larger projects may already specify a percentage of recycled materials to be used. Cable management hasn’t really been included in this debate, but Marshall-Tufflex thinks the time is now right for this to happen. Marshall-Tuflex is changing nothing other than the environment. This means all of its cable management solutions are exactly the same quality and price. All that has changed is its decision to talk about its plastics recycling and encourage others to get involved. And for good reason. Around 120 million tonnes of waste from construction, demolition and excavation are generated in the UK each year. This represents a wide variety of materials (bricks, concrete, wood, metal etc.) but plastic is rarely one of the top five (or even 10) named constituents, unless reference is made to packaging. MarshallTufflex wants to bring recycled PVC-U into the conversation. Marshall-Tufflex sources recycled plastic from the post-industrial window manufacturing industry – essentially
the off-cuts of window manufacture and fabrication. PVC-U windows are made from high-grade material designed to withstand external elements, making it a stronger and more durable raw material than virgin extrusion grade cable management material. This means that our trunking solutions are of a higher quality and more robust nature than virgin grade products, with greater molecular strength and UV stabilisation. Our long-standing relationships with the plastics recycling sector allow us to ensure a sustainable supply of suitable material in order to deliver on our commitment to maximise our recycling activities and minimise our environmental impact.
PVC-U pioneer PVC-U is a cost effective and sustainable choice with a long-life cycle. By using recycled PVC in our manufacturing process, not only are we reducing landfill, carbon emissions are 20 times lower when compared to manufacturing with virgin material. An acclaimed Manchester University study into carbon allows companies to estimate the ‘cradle to grave’ carbon footprint of their products. It was this calculation that showed the use of recycled PVC offers a 20-fold reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to virgin product. Marshall-Tufflex’s 50% recycled initiative sits well beside the drive to eliminate single use consumer plastic items and is in-tune with WRAP’s UK Plastics Pact to create a sustainable system for plastic packaging. “We need to move away from a linear plastics economy where we take, make and dispose of plastic, and towards a circular system where we keep plastic in the economy and out of the natural environment,” says WRAP. Small changes can have big impacts – cable management is a relatively small part of construction projects but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be considered in resource efficiency discussions. Millions of metres of PVC-U cable management are installed throughout buildings in the UK. If 50% of this was made from recycled plastics, the reduction in use of virgin PVC-U would be immense. The 50% initiative is not just about promoting our products; we want to see the entire cable management industry making greater use of recycled material, not only to reduce the amount of re-usable plastics going into landfill, but also to lower the demand for virgin PVC-U. It’s about making more informed decisions when specifying or purchasing PVC-U cable management systems. Marshall-Tufflex’s ultimate goal is for every specification to state that the trunking solution should be 50% recycled plastics or more. CHOOSE WISELY It is critical to specify cable protection correctly to ensure ongoing operation throughout a system’s lifetime, especially when choosing between metallic, non-metallic or composite flexible conduit systems, says Tim Creedon, sales and marketing director at Flexicon.
T
he wide choice of standard systems now on the market are available for a reason; to ensure contractors can specify the right product for the application demands. However, careful consideration must be paid to material choice without over specifying or introducing unnecessary cost. Before the development of engineered plastics, conduits and conduit fittings were made of metal. As plastics developed, they were used as sheathings to provide increased flexibility, plus improved water and corrosion resistance. With the development of highperformance engineering polymers, allplastic conduits were developed together with injection-moulded conduit fittings, with nylon (polyamide) being one of the most important materials now available. Taking the automotive industry as an example, there has been an ongoing trend to replace metal parts with plastic components, where weight, mechanical strength, high-temperature, oil and fuel resistance are important factors. In the same vein, non-metallic systems have taken a progressively larger share of the market. Yet, metallic and composite conduit systems are still in demand, due to their high mechanical strength and EMC screening possibilities, so making an informed choice must now take in to account many different factors.

The first step to selecting the material is to understand which hazards the conduit will be subject to. Specifying conduit based on one property alone is a mistake, and the full range of environmental factors should be considered. These can include exposure to extremes of temperature, UV

radiation, harsh chemicals, the likelihood of water or dust ingress, fire performance, the compression strength required and abrasion resistance. While many products may look the same, they are designed to meet specific criteria, so customers should always check suitability and compatibility for the application. With over 60 different systems now available, Flexicon, for example, offers in-depth comparative performance data to help contractors make the right selection. This is a critical aspect of the purchasing process as specification can often be based on preference, previous installation experience or outdated requirements. In effect, this could mean that a flexible conduit system is selected which is not suitable for the application or is over specified where an alternative, lower-cost solution would provide the required levels of protection.
The benefits of non-metallic Metallic conduit has a higher level of crush resistance, high mechanical strength and can provide excellent EMC screening properties. However, the technology of non-metallic conduit means that it can sometimes offer an equally tough solution, coupled with ease of installation and reduced weight. Where fatigue life or impact resistance is important, nylon corrugated conduits offer high impact strength and recover if crushed. They also have no exposed metal that requires bonding and do not rust or corrode. PVC corrugated flexible conduits offer high compression strength and polypropylene conduits are acid resistant and available at a lower cost. In addition, it is worth mentioning the labour and installation time. Non-metallic systems are often quicker to install than steel options, as they are easier and faster to cut, with fewer parts and many of the fittings pushing on and twisting to secure. For installations subject to increased UV exposure, it is important to specify nonmetallic and polymer-coated metal conduit with extreme care, as UV radiation will naturally degrade any plastic materials. Failure could result in materials cracking, an increase in brittleness, reduced flexibility and lower impact strength. To overcome this issue, specifiers should select products with proven UV resistance credentials. There is no one recognised standard that UV resistance is tested to, meaning actual product performance claims can differ drastically.
When to specify metallic or composite? While non-metallic options can indeed offer high levels of protection, there will always be a requirement for metal and composite systems. This can include applications that require a very high compression or pull-off strength, or, of particular importance, where there is the need to protect cables from exposure in hazardous environments. Composite products, such as plastic sheathing on metal conduits, metal overbraiding or metal threads on plastic fittings can also offer the ideal combination of light weight, high strength and fast installation. If specified correctly, a combination of liquid-tight, metallic flexible conduit systems and flameproof barrier glands can offer effective cable protection. These systems are available in nickel-plated brass and 316 stainless-steel, with the suitability of the material dependent on the installation environment. Specifically, this offers the best combination of mechanical strength and ingress protection while providing high levels of chemical and corrosion resistance. In environments subject to the corrosive effects of salt spray, such as marine or offshore, Flexicon standardises on the use of marine grade stainless steel 316L tested to ASTM B117-11 and BS EN ISO 9227 standards.
Long-term A cable protection system is designed to do just that – protect. Compromising the integrity of the installation by failing to provide adequate protection could be catastrophic in today’s interconnected world. With material properties advancing all the time, operators now have an extensive choice of metallic, composite or non-metallic options at their disposal. It is by employing a combination of careful specification and the correct application of system components, that the ideal option can be selected that not only protects against the possible hazards but meets budget constraints too. HIGH HOPES Multi-occupancy buildings present a unique challenge to specifiers and electrical contractors due to the height and scale of the projects they are working on. Steve Richmond, marketing and technical manager for REHAU Building Solutions, looks at how the clever use of trunking solutions can make light work of this tall order.
C
ommercial new build and refurbishment projects provide a steady stream of work for the electrical contracting industry, particularly in large urban areas where the demand for city centre apartments, student accommodation, hotels and office space peaks. The cabling required for such multi-occupancy buildings is significant, and contractors can spend many months installing power and data supplies to individual dwellings, guest rooms or offices, often replicating the same cable installation over and over again. Having products that are easy to fit and cost effective is therefore essential for such jobs, as every minute or penny saved per installation quickly adds up. So how can cable trunking really make multi-occupancy building installations more efficient? Well, the primary benefits focus on ease of installation. On a new build project, contractors are under pressure to deliver on time and to budget so ensuring products are easy to fit not only reduces time spent on-site, it can also reduce the number of workers required to complete the job and improve the quality of the installations. Small design innovations in the cable trunking, such as pre-punched holes or guide pins, all contribute to a faster fit and help contractors progress on largescale jobs quicker.
Student digs REHAU’s PROFILA trunking was recently specified for a high-quality student accommodation development in Portswood, Southampton. Local firm J&B Hopkins was appointed by Morgan Sindall to deliver the electrical services within the building, which features 435 student bedrooms. The data trunking specified by the developers Select Property Group was very minimal; in each room they wanted a 1m section of trunking, which would house the HDMI for the television, a data point, a USB charging point and a double socket. This would be mounted on the wall underneath the desk, around 400mm from the floor. J&B Hopkins chose the PROFILA data trunking for the project. With a depth of 65mm, it is able to handle modern data cabling and power cables with ease. While this was a prominent factor in the decision to specify PROFILA, it was the ease of installation that clinched the deal for project manager Andy Hindley. Andy says, “Installation of the PROFILA was very quick and simple. It comes with holes pre-punched into the base, which saves time on install, plus it has an open design so once it’s on the wall, we can just run the cables in and fit on the front cover. REHAU was able to supply the PROFILA in 1m long sections for us, so there was no cutting required on-site which meant it was less time to install, less mess and less waste too.”

When it comes to ‘easy fits’, choosing trunking which can be mounted with minimal fuss is ideal, and as Andy mentions, pre-cut lengths are also a hit with contractors on multi-occupancy jobs. Ordering trunking in short or bespoke lengths not only saves contractors time spent on cutting trunking on-site, but it also reduces mess, waste and the time it takes to tidy up once the job is done. We estimate that pre-cut trunking can actually help contractors finish an installation in half the time. If you shop around, contractors might also find trunking solutions that are even quicker to fit as manufacturers are increasingly looking for ways to provide the

Some cable trunking makers, like REHAU, not only provide easy fit, pre-cut trunking for customers to make their lives easier, but can also deliver them pre-wired. Preassembled data trunking pods are plug and play, saving contractors even more time on each installation. It’s worth remembering that ease of installation doesn’t stop with the initial fit, and contractors need to be mindful that in commercial multi-occupancy buildings, the likelihood of a refit is very real – for example in hotels, which have ongoing upgrade programmes and therefore a defined need for future flexibility.
Room to manoeuvre In 2017, Chichester-based Haddow Electrical won a Holiday Inn refurbishment project as part of a tender bid with Phelan Construction. The six-month works programme included the refurbishment of 97 rooms in the Holiday Inn in Southampton and 202 rooms at the Holiday Inn in Reading. The specification of the cable trunking was an essential element of the refurb programme to not only provide the three necessary power points for each room – in locations which would fit around the new furniture and room layouts – but also to deliver a cabling solution which would be futureproof and could be easily adapted again in the future.

Adrian Downie, electrical project manager at Haddow Electrical says, “Holiday Inn rooms have been designed with a ‘plug and play’ approach in mind, ensuring there is as little disruption as possible during refurbishments. Rewiring each room to move the sockets when the hotel puts in new beds and tables is not practical or cost effective, so cabling is run around the room and simply adapted to the needs of the new layout when it is refurbed.” Haddow Electrical chose REHAU’s slimline SL trunking for the contract, fitting in excess of 2,800m of trunking in the two hotels. Although it is made of extruded PVC, the chamfered finish of the trunking gives it the look of traditional skirting, making it a neat and unobtrusive way to run cables around a room. At 70mm high and 20mm deep, the new trunking was the same size as the trunking being removed, so it was an easy substitution and required less finishing off for the construction team.
Being prepared While the future needs of a multioccupancy building may or may not include a refurbishment plan, what is guaranteed is that it will surely require maintenance at some point. HAMPSHIRE SHOPPING PRECINCT SEES SAVINGS WITH LIGHT EFFICIENT DESIGN Light Efficient Design UK’s retrofit LED lighting solutions have enabled an outdoor shopping precinct to make major energy savings in the first year of operation and see lamp replacement costs plummet. As part of a major refurbishment, the precinct had a requirement to upgrade the existing metal halide floodlighting to LEDs. An LED retrofit re-lamping approach was selected. WISKA’S NEW COMBI 206 JUNCTION BOX The COMBI 206 is the smallest member of the COMBI junction box range, measuring 85x49mm – approximately half the size of the COMBI 308 model. TRIDONIC LAUNCHES NEW SENSORS FIT FOR DALI-2 Tridonic has launched a new series of sensors that can detect both motion and ambient light. Developed in accordance with the IEC-62386-103 standard and prepared for certification by the Digital Illumination Interface Alliance (DiiA), the sensors are suitable for commercially available DALI-2 controllers and can easily be integrated into lighting and building management systems. The new sensors operate with passive infrared technology (PIR) and react to changing thermal radiation in the detection range. The sensors are available in three designs: MSensor G3 SFI 5DPI (low-bay), G3 SFI 30 10DPI WH (mid-bay) and G3 SFI 30 16DPI WH (high-bay). Depending on the respective design and area of application, models with an additional attachment housing offer protection class IP66 (mid-bay) or IP65 (high-bay). The sensors are compatible with standard controllers for DALI systems in accordance with EN 62386-101 Edition 2 and are therefore easy to integrate into lighting management systems.
