Tridonic opens lighting academy and tech hub Tridonic UK, a manufacturer and enabler for smart, connected lighting, has opened a technology hub at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London and invested in a new Connected Lighting Academy, in its Basingstoke headquarters.

These investments are central to its digital and business transformation strategy, designed to help support and educate its OEM partners through training on the company’s latest products.

This includes net4more and basicDIM wireless, and will enable partners to learn more about the opportunities for connected lighting and how best to sell these complex, integrated lighting solutions.

‘Cautious optimism’ for engineering services The latest sector-wide Building Engineering Business Survey, sponsored

by Scolmore, shows that sector growth remained steady in the second quarter of 2019 in the face of rising costs and persistent payment issues.

The survey, which included data from industry trade bodies ECA, BESA, Select and SNIPEF, found that more than eight in 10 (81%) businesses’ turnover remained the same or increased in Q2 2019 (versus Q1 2019). Less than a fifth (18%) reported a decrease in turnover.

Harvard LED business acquired by Gallant Following the purchase of IP and related assets of Harvard Technology Limited, a new company – Harvard Power Systems Limited – has been formed.

It seeks to re-establish sales of the popular Harvard LED drivers and LED light-sources.

Now part of Gallant Lighting, a global group of companies, the new Harvard business will operate from its sales and engineering base near Leeds, whilst all production has been relocated to its specialist electronics manufacturing facilities in India.

Gallant Lighting also recently acquired Venture Lighting India, which will bring significant and comprehensive manufacturing expertise to the group.

Harvard Power Systems, based in the UK, retains a group of key personnel from the previous Harvard Technology company and will benefit from its extensive knowledge and skillset

in product engineering, material procurement, technical design, and development of the wellrespected Harvard LED product portfolio.

“Harvard has a long history of first-class products and excellent product development.

We are very excited to be re-launching this great range of products and to build upon these with the latest state-of-the-art designs, such as our CLi15 and CLi40 high specification LED drivers,” explains Mark Needham, Managing Director of Harvard Power Systems.

New technical director for NICEIC and Elecsa John O’Neill has been appointed Director of Technical Excellence at Certsure (NICEIC and Elecsa).

A well-known and much respected figure in the industry, O’Neill has almost 50 years’ experience in the sector. He started his career as an apprentice at Vauxhall Motors in Luton before working as a maintenance supervisor for General Motors in Canada and the USA. He returned to the UK to set up

Outlook for Q3 suggests that the vast majority (85%) of businesses expect more or the same turnover compared to Q2.

ECA CEO, Steve Bratt, comments, “Businesses are continuing to show resilience in what is a challenging commercial environment, with increased costs and poor payment ongoing concerns.

With the uncertainty of the ongoing Brexit impasse casting a shadow over industry, it’s vital that the new Government injects some impetus by backing major infrastructure projects and ensuring prompt payment across the sector.”

More than half (52%) of respondents reported an increase in labour costs, while nearly two thirds (62%) reported an

increase in material costs.

Prompt payment remained a major challenge, with it taking over 30 days in 62% of jobs in the public sector, in breach of regulations. This comes despite 56% of businesses saying their clients promised below 30-day payment within contractual agreements.

The survey received 497 responses from companies across the multi-billionpound industry, mainly regarding their performance in Q2 2019 (1 April to 30 June 2019), and expectations for Q3 2019.

JIB appoints new Chief Executive The Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (JIB) has announced the appointment of Jay Parmar as its new Chief Executive. He will take up the post on October 1, 2019, and replaces Steve Brawley, who is scheduled to retire after 11 years in the role.

Previously the Director of Policy and Membership at the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, Parmar is an experienced legal professional and is skilled in negotiation, member engagement and business planning. In his current role, he is responsible for policy work and campaigns, representing his industry at UK and

EU level, and has a consultative role on a number of government-led groups.

Speaking of his appointment, Parmar comments, “I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead the JIB team and am looking forward to working with colleagues, members, partners, and stakeholders with a key interest in this dynamic and vibrant sector, to ensure that JIB continues to deliver a first-class service. My focus will be to ensure that the organisation remains at the forefront of the industry’s fast pace of change; supporting members and further strengthening the value of membership.”

EV charging – quality must come first

Rexel team saddles up for charity cycle ride A team of 12 cyclists is preparing to take on a 450-mile ride to raise funds for the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) and Macmillan Cancer Support later this year.

The mammoth challenge will take place in September, with the riders starting their journey in Paris and finishing up at Rexel UK HQ in Birmingham – a trip that will see them complete around 100 miles per day. In the team are seven cyclists from Rexel UK – two hailing from Rexel France, and three working for Rexel suppliers – with one vehicle supporting the riders throughout the trip.

Peter Elliott, Commercial Director at Rexel, has organised the trip since its conception six years ago. He comments, “This is the fourth time we have taken on this challenge in the last six years. In 2017, we raised an incredible £36,000 for our chosen charities – The EIC and Macmillan Cancer Support – through the many generous

donations made. That brought the overall total to just over £70,000. This year, we are aiming to raise another £30,000 to achieve our target of £100,000.

“There are a few reasons behind our charity choices. I’m privileged to be on the board of the EIC, a fantastic charity which helps people facing real hardship in our industry. It’s a charity close to our hearts, as members of the Rexel team have benefited from the superb support they offer.

“Macmillan is particularly important to me as my father had been diagnosed with terminal cancer at the time of planning our first ride. He sadly passed away in August, a month before our ride in September. Cancer affects us all in some way, and Macmillan provide fantastic support for families facing up to this.”

In response to the government’s recent pledge to invest more cash into the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, Bureau Veritas has again voiced its concerns over maintenance challenges; stating that ‘quality must come first’ if the UK is to create a world-class charging network for cleaner vehicles.

At the start of August, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced it is pumping nearly £40 million into improving the infrastructure for electric vehicles, with investments in wireless charging and pop-up pavement technology. All new homes built in Britain are also set to be fitted with charging points for electric cars.

Welcoming the government’s additional funding, Bureau Veritas has responded, saying that the speedy creation of charging infrastructure should focus on quality and safety.

Michael Kenyon, Technical Manager at Bureau Veritas, says, “This funding offers a great opportunity to a number of industries, including automotive,

engineering and electrical contractors, currently involved in delivering the government’s Road to Zero strategy, which wants ‘almost every car and van’ in the UK to be zero emission by 2050.

“However, in the race to deliver the adequate charging infrastructure required to achieve this, quality in terms of engineering, safety and compliant installations must come first. Especially, if the UK is to create a world-class charging network for cleaner vehicles – one that is not only cost-effective but will also last the test of time.”

Bureau Veritas is also encouraging installers of charging points to ensure they hold the latest accreditations and are up to speed with recent rule changes on residual current devices (RCDs) and earthing arrangements. The firm points to new guidance on the installation of EV charging points offered in Section 722 of the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. This has recently led to the code of practice for electric vehicle charging equipment installations moving on to its 3rd Edition.

INDUSTRY NEWS Aico publishes guide to BS 5839-6:2019 With the recent changes to BS 5839-6:2019, Aico – a provider of domestic mains powered fire and carbon monoxide alarms – has condensed the information into a pocket-sized guide.

British Standard BS 5839-6:2019 covers specific recommendations for fire alarm systems in all domestic premises, covering both new-build and existing properties.

The standard contains a large amount of detail on all aspects relating to the design and installation of fire alarm systems, including the type of alarm to install and the areas of the property to protect.

NAPIT acquires Stroma Installer Certification NAPIT has announced the acquisition of Stroma’s Installer Certification.

The acquisition will result in NAPIT taking over and operating the Stroma installer activities in the building services and building fabric sectors.

The transaction will strengthen NAPIT’s commitment to continuously raise standards and safety within the construction industry and Stroma’s aim to focus on their core areas of service around environmental management, building performance testing and building control.

TRAINING New training centre for Trade Skills 4U Electrical training provider, Trade Skills 4U, has announced the opening of a new training centre at Westwood Business Park in Coventry. The company, established in 2005, has been training electricians from across the country for over 14 years, firstly in Gatwick and more recently in Leeds and Warrington.

Apprentices deliver clear ROI, research shows Companies that recruit apprentices can see a return on investment (RoI) as soon as year two of the apprenticeship programme, according to new figures from The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP).

Using scenarios based on low, medium and high charge-out rates for unskilled and skilled work, the overall net costs and benefits of apprentice recruitment have been projected.

At the lowest rates, an apprentice delivers a net benefit of around £11,400 over the four years and starts to make a return in year three of the apprenticeship.

At higher charge-out rates, the apprentice begins to pay for themselves in year two and by the end of year four has created a net total benefit of just over £34,000 at medium charge out rates and £56,700 at high rates.

ESP provides CC-Tea-V security When it was time to replace an old and faulty CCTV system at its manufacturing and warehouse site in Gloucestershire, Richard Green, Engineer at The Tea Factory, was keen to source a system which uses the latest 4MP technology. Security specialist, ESP, was able to provide the desired solution.

Following a site survey at the 30,000 square foot, purpose-built premises, it was recommended that products from the HDView 4MP CCTV range would provide the ideal system to protect the site.

An eight-channel, full HD, 1TB CCTV DVR, with four 4MP cameras in grey, were selected for their ease of installation, relatively low cost and the technical back-up available from ESP. The HDView systems offer features such as

motion, continuous and schedule record, with simple footage playback and backup method of distributing essential footage. As standard, it is packed with remotely accessible functions, including live view by smartphone app, email triggering, cloud ID connection, and storage. The tailor-made ESP HDView app is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and enables quick and simple remote viewing.

Manchester redevelopment as easy as ABC

Zumtobel displays its sensitive side

Cable management systems from the Unitrunk Rapid Installation Systems (RIS) range have been installed as part of the transformation of an iconic suite of three Brutalist buildings in central Manchester – the ABC Buildings.

Originally constructed between 1959 and 1965, the ABC Buildings are being refreshed for the 21st century. Mechanical and electrical contractor, Encon Maintain, has been awarded the Cat A mechanical and electrical fit-out project across all areas, along with a Cat B fit-out on level one of buildings A and B. Unitrunk’s EasyConnect cable basket and UniKlip cable tray from the company’s RIS range were selected for the project to ensure ease and speed of installation, enabling new tenants to take occupation as early as possible.

A new substation has been installed and Encon Maintain has created a new central switch room serving all three buildings, with busbar installed as risers to take the mains supply into each building. From here, cable management from the Unitrunk range has been installed to provide the infrastructure for all lighting, power, fire alarm, security alarm, access control and data networks.

Unitrunk’s cable trunking and UniKlip cable tray has been installed in raised access floor voids of all areas of the buildings, and UniKlip cable tray has also been suspended from the ceilings from Unitrunk channel as part of an exposed installation, creating a stylish, industrial aesthetic.

The speed and ease-of-use the system offers has been instrumental in ensuring a neat and uniform installation.

Zumtobel Lighting has supplied a sensitive lighting solution for the refurbishment of Birkenhead Priory, the oldest standing building in Merseyside, now under the care of Wirral Council and used as a museum.

The old, inefficient Tungsten spotlights that used to provide the illumination of the display cases has been replaced to provide highly effective, yet gentle highlighting of the exhibits. Working closely with Ainsley Gommon Architects, Zumtobel came up with a lighting scheme that would see the gloomy interior and shadowy exhibits become an inviting facility with a beautiful interior décor and clear displays.

cases. This enables the goods to be displayed to optimum effect, whilst selective lighting accents emphasise even the smallest product details, presenting them as elegant highlights. The extremely compact, gimbal-mounted lighting heads are the smallest currently available on the market for display cabinet lighting. Furthermore, Microtools’ excellent colour rendering index of Ra > 90 made this the perfect solution for the priory.

A floor mounted Pylas LED floodlight was chosen for uplighting the vaulted brickwork ceiling and enhancing the previously dark and gloomy interior, making it more appealing to visitors. Aico alarms used by social housing providers, big and small Aico is supporting South Lakes Housing (SLH) with its 3000 Series alarms to provide protection to tenants across a range of properties, including blocks of flats and 12 sheltered housing schemes.

SLH is an independent, not-for-profit housing association that manages around 3,000 homes in South Lakeland, Cumbria. SLH wants its tenants to feel safer, and installing Aico’s 3000 Series alarms and carbon monoxide alarms will help it do just that.

The 3000 Series multi-sensors are SLH’s alarm of choice. Included are the Ei3024 optical and heat multi-sensor, and the Ei3028 heat and carbon monoxide multi-sensor, which has been designed specifically for use in kitchens and provides tenants with protection from both fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

PROJECT POLICY – A WORD OF ADVICE Specialist insurer, ECIC, believes that – due to a High Court ruling in 2018 – electrical contractors should no longer rely on project policy catchall cover. This month’s Key Issue highlights the potential gaps in the protection offered by project policies.

CIC, the specialist insurer for the building services sector, is warning electrical contractors working on major building sites and projects that they may not be covered under the site’s project policy as they have been in the past.

This could leave them exposed if they are found to be at fault in an insurance claim. The warning follows an out of court settlement which has left insurers and contractors in the dark about the extent of cover offered by project policies – in the eyes of the law.

High Court ruling causes confusion Insurers supporting the UK’s construction sector are in need of urgent clarity over policyholder and sub-contractor’s rights, the ECIC believes.

In 2018, a High Court decision found in favour of a project policy insurer recovering their costs from the contractor who caused a site fire. The court concluded that, under the terms of the project policy, the sub-contractor was required to have

separate cover – which was not in place. This meant the contractor was liable for the full cost of damage caused. The contractor in this case was due to appeal the High Court’s decision in early 2019, but instead settled out of court, prior to the appeal hearing.

Ian Hollingworth, Technical Claims and Relationship Manager at ECIC, comments, “The out of court settlement has left insurers supporting the UK’s construction sector in need of urgent clarity over policyholder and subcontractor’s rights under these policies, and where the sub-contractor needs to take out their own CAR/public liability insurance.

“Traditionally, employers on larger construction projects take out a project policy to cover damage to the existing structure. There is also the option of adding cover for contract works being undertaken by appointed sub-contractors including electrical contractors.

“The project policy would normally provide protection to named contractors and sometimes all contractors in the contractual chain, reducing delays in the project and avoiding costly litigation

However, in this case, the sub-contractor had not been appointed at the start of the project, and was not named on the policy. This meant the sub-contractor required their own insurance, clearly highlighting the importance of checking insurance cover thoroughly, and not taking for granted that full cover is held for all subcontractors working on site.

Checking terms of the cover is essential Hollingworth continues, “Whilst the situation remains somewhat unclear for the insurers, what is very clear is that electrical contractors and sub-contractors can no longer rely on a project policy insurer to cover any losses in the event of damage they may cause. A project policy does not necessarily provide the catchall cover on which contractors have come to rely, and overlooking this could be an extremely expensive mistake for any electrical contractor or sub-contractor.

“Thorough checking of existing cover and the terms of that cover is even more important than ever, so we advise all electrical contractors to work closely with their broker or insurance provider to confirm they are adequately insured for their potential liabilities.”

A SAFETY EVOLUTION IN SHEFFIELD In this month’s project focus, ECN looks at why Sheffield City Council – in conjunction with safety systems from Aico – has gone above and beyond the minimum safety requirements for its new build properties in the social housing sector.

S 5839-6, the code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in domestic premises, was revised this past April. It’s considered standard practice in existing dwellings and new builds, so the changes were eagerly anticipated.

It was understood before its release that BS 5839-6 2019 would provide greater clarity on grades of alarms, which determine the type of alarm to be used, and would increase the type/level of protection for certain dwellings (referred to as the category).

In the social housing sector, many organisations have been planning fire alarm upgrades in anticipation of the revised standard. Sheffield City Council, a long-standing Aico customer and early adopter of its latest technology, took the decision well in advance to upgrade the fire alarm systems across its entire housing stock from LD3 category, which is a low level of protection and the minimum requirement, to the more rigorous LD2 – all using Aico 3000 series alarms.

Whilst LD3 requires one mains powered optical alarm in the hallway, and another upstairs on the landing, interconnected together, LD2 provides added protection.

To meet LD2, Sheffield City Council is fitting mains powered smoke alarms in every circulation space on each storey (ie

hallways and landings), in the principal habitable rooms and in every access room serving an inner room, along with a heat alarm in the kitchen. All alarms within a property are being interconnected either through hard wiring, or wirelessly, using Aico SmartLink RF technology.

The work is being carried out alongside a major fixed wire testing programme, which runs until 2021, to minimise access to property requirements. Over 20,000 properties will be upgraded to the higher level of protection in phase one.

Discussing why Sheffield City Council has taken this step and gone beyond the minimum requirements – not just of the previous, but of the revised standard – Jill Hurst, Head of Housing Investment and Repairs, explains, “We take safety seriously.

Trying to anticipate the forthcoming Part 6 (BS 5839-6:2013) revision, we decided to install a more comprehensive category LD2 system, instead of the minimum requirement. Our aim is to help customers keep safe, to better manage our housing stock and protect this vital and scarce resource.”

Hurst continues, “Early detection of a fire can, in many cases, mean that fire spread is prevented, and property damage is limited – this could also apply to adjoining property damage. Scottish and Northern Ireland standards now have LD2 as mandatory, including owner occupied properties. Installation during our electrical upgrade programme was an excellent chance to undertake this work in advance of England catching up.”

Sheffield City Council, through its principal contractors, is installing Aico mains powered 3000 Series for this upgrade, using the Ei3024 and Ei3028 multi-sensors. The Ei3024 features optical and heat sensors which constantly monitor and analyse smoke and heat levels, providing the best response to all fire types and reduced false alarms.

Designed specifically for use in kitchens, the Ei3028 is Aico’s first heat and carbon monoxide alarm, providing protection from both fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

In addition, the Ei3018 carbon monoxide alarm is being installed in every room that has a fuel burning appliance. Once again, this sees Sheffield City Council going well beyond the regulations, which only require a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms with solid fuel burning appliances.

Peter Marr, from the Council’s Repairs Policy and Investment Team, comments, “Sheffield City Council believes that the best way to protect tenants from carbon

monoxide poisoning is through the provision of an audible CO alarm, coupled with educating tenants on how to stay CO safe. Since the start of this programme, a small number of CO instances have been highlighted and acted upon, which has evidenced the wisdom to install; furthermore, AudioLink has proved an invaluable aid in these investigations.

Coverage, therefore, is in every room with a fuel burning appliance (gas or solid fuel, open or room sealed, with or without flame shut-off features etc).”

HEAD TO TOE PROTECTION Gavin Tallentire, Category Manager at Rexel, welcomes the new PPE regulations and explains why they are so important to the sector.

T

he importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) cannot, and should not, be overlooked by businesses.

From head to toe, this is the equipment that can, and does, save workers from injuries on a daily basis. In fact, PPE products regularly save the lives of people on-site or in the work place.

Despite its importance PPE is an element of the work environment that can be overlooked, and until recent times distributors of the products were subject to legislation that had been in place since 1989 when the PPE Directive 89/686/EEC was introduced.

But in 2016 the PPE Regulations (EU) 2016/425 were adopted and published.

Following a two-year transition period, the new regulations were brought into effect, and in April this year it became against legislation to CE mark using the previous standard. The final stage will take place in 2023 when old EC-type certificates to PPED will become invalid.

These changes are enhancing an

already impressive combined health and safety record in the UK, which is one of the best in the world.

Welcoming the new regulations Gavin Tallentire of Rexel says, “In the past there has been very little control over the variety of products in the PPE market place, as there has been no certification in the UK. Protective products are such vital pieces of equipment and we know that while certain roles on-site or at work will always prioritise PPE and safety, it is something that can occasionally get overlooked with people selecting a basic option without understanding if it is actually compliant and offering their team the required levels of protection.”

He continues, “This new legislation means that PPE will now undergo more rigorous testing and the onus now falls on the supply chain, from the manufacturer through to the distributor, to ensure equipment is meeting requirements.

Ultimately this means businesses can place better trust in the quality of the equipment they purchase and use for the safety of their team.

The key changes to the legislation mean that importers and distributors must ensure the required conformity procedures have been carried out by the manufacturer. They are now also responsible for making sure nothing between the time of manufacture and the actual sale could impact on this conformity.

The categorisation of PPE has also been amended, with significant changes including clarification and specific references in Category III for PPE to protect against cuts by hand-held chain-saws, PPE used for high-pressure jet cutting operations and for bullet wounds or knife stabs.

This provides better clarity and brings terminology in line with similar European legislation.

“Despite these changes and the new onus on the distributor, the initial pressure remains on the manufacturer to ensure conformity,” adds Gavin. “But to take away any question and to ensure all products remain to standard right up to the point of sale, here at Rexel we have implemented our own testing and will be ensuring all our PPE will be fully compliant to the new regulations by January 1, 2020 – three years before it is actually required.

“For our customers this means they can trust our products are going to meet legislative requirements, which is important for their peace of mind. Also, the products will keep themselves and their team safe while at work. Lastly by purchasing compliant products from early next year, they will be able to ensure their stock is completely compliant while spreading out the cost of purchase.”

LED MATTERS LED technology has evolved significantly since the first LED bulb came about, but a multitude of myths and misconceptions remain. Here, The LED Specialist clarifies some of the most important aspects and provides advice on how to choose the right colour for your environment.

Choose the correct colour temperature LED for the atmosphere you want to create

Wattage and brightness Wattage is often confused with brightness.

With traditional lightbulbs, we relied on wattage to indicate brightness. However, with LEDs, wattage does not measure brightness, but it does measure power consumption. LED bulbs emit the same amount of light as traditional light bulbs, but at a lower wattage.

When selecting LED bulbs, look at light output, which is measured in lumens (lm) and is indicated on the packaging. For your convenience, the equivalent wattage of traditional bulbs is also shown, because many consumers are still familiar with this – but you need to disregard it in terms of the brightness of the product. As a guideline, a 35W conventional will have an output of 280-300 lumens, and a 50W will be 380-400 lumens.

Light colour The first LED bulbs on the market produced a very blue ‘daylight’, and many people think that’s still the case. Kelvins (K) are used to measure light colour.

Scientific tests have proven how the colour of light can impact upon energy levels and productivity. For example, to relax at home, you would choose a warm light in rooms in your house, such as your bedroom. A warm white light, however, may not work in your kitchen or bathroom, as these rooms usually have white fittings, such as sinks or cabinets, which would look more yellow in warm light – so we would recommend a white (3000K) or cool white (4000K) light for those areas.

LED technology has evolved significantly. Today, most LED lights are available in a variety of white colours – everything from very warm white (2000K) through to daylight (6500k). You can choose an LED light that shines with the familiar warm glow of a traditional lightbulb, or go for one that mimics natural light. The accompanying illustration can assist you in choosing the correct colour temperature.

Light quality Low quality LEDs have been flooding the market, but many of these LEDs start to noticeably fade after a year. There will be a recognisable colour shift, from initially appearing to be performing well (compared to the recognised brands below), but the deterioration will rapidly occur in a short space of time.

Most of the well renowned LED brands, such as Philips (now Signify), Integral, Osram (now Ledvance), Crompton, Megaman, Segula, Bell, Calex, Sylvania and TCP were designed to provide a consistent

quality of light over time. They will keep shining almost as brightly as they did when new for most of their lifetime. Most LEDs from the brands above will last for 15,000 hours, to – in some cases – 50,000 hours; which is about 30 years, based on the average usage of 2.7 hours per day.

Many of the brands mentioned above include the CRI (Colour Rendering Index) rating in their product specifications. On a scale of 0-100, natural outdoor light has a CRI of 100 and is used as the standard of comparison for any other light source. As a rule of thumb, the higher the CRI, the better the colours will appear to their true colour.

The reason this is relevant is the impact it has on the human eye. The higher the CRI, the more likely it is that colours and shapes will appear vivid and closer to their true colour. This is extremely important in applications where something is on display, such as in an art gallery, which will want to showcase its products in the best light. In this scenario, a CRI of 90+ will make all the difference. They are commonly featured in retail shops too.

Energy efficient cost saving The first LED bulbs cost considerably more than conventional traditional bulbs, but today, they are closer in price. They use less energy and last longer, thus showing a long-term saving.

Many LED bulbs last up to 15,000 or 20,000 hours, which is 15 years when used 2.7 hours per day, on average. If a bulb is on for three-and-a-half hours per day, it will last for 15 years. Most branded LED bulbs consume about 80% less energy than conventional bulbs, so you can soon enjoy significant savings on your energy bill, and for the lifetime of the product.

Lighting is decorative As the LED technology has evolved, many lighting designers have been crying out for LED filaments to be available. Their prayers have been answered, as the filament LED range is rapidly growing. Many brands are now producing LED filaments, with variations including dimmable, a variety of shapes, a variety of caps/fitments, and also now a variety of colours, with most being very warm or warm white. But there are also now cool white options too.

There are also variations in the style of the filament, which ranges vastly from the original vertical filament style which was in the first release by many manufacturers.

Walking down many restaurant-clad streets, you will notice that a lot of them have adopted filament LEDs in their shop windows to create a warm glow and relaxed

ambience. Lighting is no longer a choice made out of purpose, but in fact it has become an integral part of interior design, as the right lighting product and right light can dramatically influence the feel and popularity of the application it is being installed into.

There are now filament LEDs being released in many smart lighting options, which is expanded upon below.

Smart lighting evolves The most familiar smart lighting product is likely to be the Philips HUE, which has been a front runner in the LED smart lighting market. This is a popular system, and products such as the Osram Smart range are now compatible with the HUE hub (gateway).

The technology has now evolved to the next level, which means that the hub/ gateway is no longer required, and the products work directly through your Wi-Fi connection. The Smart range is rapidly expanding, with many products enabling you to create a smart home, such as controlling your heating and lighting. There are now products which can turn a conventional light fitting into a smart app-controlled option with the use of a smart switch.

A very useful addition to many smart product ranges is the smart Wi-Fi plug.

The days of having to stretch around the back of your Christmas tree to turn it on and off are now over with the smart Wi-Fi plug. This enables you to turn on any product plugged in the smart switch into an app-controlled product.

Another useful addition to the range are the smart sensors that are now available, such as the moisture sensor. This is ideal for a landlord that rents out a property known to have issues with a leak etc, as the water sensor can alert the landlord as to when an issue arises so that it doesn’t go undetected.

The lighting range is also growing with colour changing (red, green, blue colour spectrum) or tunable white (warm white to cool white) LEDs available in GU10, MR16, ES (E27) or SES (E14).

LED tubes Previously, installers may have been put off LED tubes due to the misconception that rewiring may be required. The latest LED tube ranges from recognised manufacturers are designed to be ‘plug and play’.

The range includes switch start tubes and also high frequency tubes. The latest addition to many manufacturers ranges is the new Universal LED T8, which brings simplicity to your lighting project. You can forget about the driver technology, and thanks to a unique design, the Universal T8 directly fits into luminaries operating either on Electro Magnetic ballasts, HF Electronic ballasts or mains power connections.

Perfectly safe, reliable and easy to install, the Universal T8 is the ideal alternative to standard fluorescent tubes to save energy and reduce investment.

There are also a variety of outputs available if you do require a higher lumen output from your LED tube.

Warm dimming This means that as the LED dims, the colour of the light will scale to become warmer.

From their initial release, LEDs only dimmed in the output of light level, and the colour of the light would not change.

The products that feature the warm dimming functionality offer a new experience for dimmable LEDs. The gradual dimming feature enables light levels to dim to warm tones of traditional bulbs. Unlike standard LEDs, these warm dimming bulbs offer a dimmable warm glow in a familiar shape that lets you go from everyday functional lighting, to inviting, to cosy.

Many of the recognised manufacturers will market this functionality differently with different terms, including ‘dim to warm’, ‘warm glow’, ‘dim tone’, and ‘warm dim’.

Why the prices differ Some of the products may look very similar, even to the point where it is hard to determine the difference. When looking at the cost of LEDs across the board, the way to differentiate between entry level ranges and the premium ranges is to look at some key specifications.

These include lifetime, guarantee, colour rendering, and dimmable functionality.

NEW LIGHT THROUGH OLD WINDOWS Lansbury Lawrence Primary School is on track to significantly reduce its annual energy use, following an upgrade to LED lighting financed by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets’ Carbon Offset Fund and delivered by Energys Group.

L

ocated in the Poplar area of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Lansbury Lawrence Primary School was built in 1949-50 and is a Grade II listed building.

Today, the school has 500 pupils aged between 3-11 years old, and it has consistently been rated as ‘good’ by OFSTED since 2013.

The school was designed to provide open spaces for learning with large windows to maximise levels of natural light and, nearly 70 years later, students are still benefiting from its modernist design.

Nevertheless, utility bills are a major overhead for the school, following behind salary and PFI costs. With running costs increasing by 5-10% a year – in a climate of falling income – there was real pressure on the school’s management team to identify ways to make operational savings.

Sensibly, the school had invested in new housing and diffusers for its lighting a few years ago. As such, it appeared that a straightforward bulk retrofit of LED lighting would be all that was needed to make a real impact on its energy bills. Whilst the school can call upon its PFI contract for standard maintenance work, an upgrade of this scale fell outside the scope of that arrangement.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets set up the Carbon Offset Fund to support projects like this; thereby providing grant funding for eligible projects.

Saleh Ahmed, School Business Manager at Lansbury Lawrence, prepared a tender document to identify the right supplier for this project and selected Energys Group from a shortlist of four organisations. He notes, “Energys Group provided the right mix of cost-competitiveness and quality within its tender response, and we were particularly pleased to see its commitment to post-installation aftercare.”

Tower Hamlets Carbon Offset Fund The London Borough of Tower Hamlets supports schools in the borough to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon emissions through a number of projects which are funded by its Carbon Offset Fund.

The team at Lansbury Lawrence had explored the potential for financial support with energy managers at the local authority and then presented a detailed business case to them for financial support of £27,600 for this project. Ahmed continues, “There is no doubt that without this type of support from Tower Hamlets, we wouldn’t have been able to entertain a project of this scale. We were so delighted when we were given the green light to proceed.”

The solution This upgrade included both internal and external lighting for the whole school, and the LED retrofit tubes, LED linear fittings, LED panels, LED wall lights, emergency light fittings, LED floodlights and outdoor wall lights were all provided from Energys Group’s own range and all come with a fiveyear guarantee.

Energys Group estimated that the project would take two weeks to complete.

To minimise disruption to teaching schedules, the project delivery team undertook to deliver the main part of the work during the Whitsun half-term and completed the rest of the works during evenings. The project was completed with a couple of days to spare.

Results and outcomes Saleh Ahmed is delighted with the way in which Energy Group has delivered this project. He explains, “Even though our contract with Energys Group was solely for the LED retrofit – and did not include any fitting and wiring work – there were a couple of instances where this was necessary; but they just got on with the job and stuck to their original price. Their project management was excellent, and nothing was too much trouble for them.”

Raj Gunasekaran, Business Development Manager at Energys Group, adds, “We are delighted to install our energy efficient, modern LED technology at Lansbury Lawrence School. Students will now benefit from all the known benefits of LED lighting, including reduced eyestrain and improved alertness and cognition. This will make a contribution to their overall learning experience, which in turn, helps teachers too.”

The project cost was £27,600, and is estimated to achieve annual savings in the region of £8,000, with a total consumption saving of 80344.00kWh. The estimated carbon reduction is 30 tonnes of CO2 per annum, with a lifetime carbon saving of 400 tonnes. Return on investment is predicted to be within 3.2 years.

ARE YOU GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR LEDS?

Holger Engelbrecht, LED Product Manager at reichelt elektronik, describes how to avoid the common pitfalls of LED failure and highlights how to maximise the benefits they offer.

L

EDs have an impressive lifespan – it’s one of their many distinct advantages over traditional lightbulbs. They can last up to five times longer than the average bulb, saving businesses and homeowners time and money. However, it’s still important to remember that misuse can cause premature failure, meaning you won’t get everything you should from your

LED bulbs.

Many users make the mistake of thinking that failure is due to poor quality bulbs, when in fact, in can actually be due to the environment the lights are being used in. To avoid this, there are a few steps that can be taken to maintain the lifespan of your bulbs if you understand the various causes which can lead to damage to LED components:

1. Voltage peaks Upstream devices which trigger via relays, such as impulse switches, motion detectors, timers, twilight switches, etc. can cause voltage peaks. By activating these types of devices, a current impulse is given to the affected mains supply.

This current pulse causes a voltage peak, which can lead to damage (often delayed) to LED components. Research has shown that LED lamp filaments are particularly

sensitive to this type of overvoltage, so it’s of paramount importance to avoid this.

2. Overvoltages Overvoltages, which can be traced back to an increase in the basic mains voltage, can have several causes. For example, the use of several LED lamps with a low power factor, can cause an ‘apparent power’ in the form of induction voltage to act on the mains.

According to EU Regulation 1194/2012, the power factor (or electrical power factor) “…refers to the ratio of active power to apparent power under periodic conditions”.

As a rule of thumb, the lower the power factor, the higher the apparent power.

Other inductive devices (such as fluorescent tubes and energy-saving lamps), which allow an induction voltage to act on the mains, can lead to an increase in the mains voltage. These increased mains voltages can lead to damage to the electronics of

LED light sources, LED lights and electronic switchgear in the respective circuit.

Surrounding systems (such as transformer stations, cooling systems and lifts) can also present an issue. RC quenching elements (capacitors 0.1µF with 100 Ohm resistor) discharge induction voltages and voltage peaks via the neutral conductor, cleaning up the network in the respective circuit. In recent years, the majority of all system-related failures of LED lamps can be avoided by using RC extinction elements.

3. Overheating Overheating can cause problems due to proximity to older bulbs, which release more heat. Higher wattage bulbs and enclosed fittings both cause this. One of the reasons LEDs are better and more energy efficient is the small amount of heat they generate. This is also a good reason to switch all your lightbulbs to LEDs in one go, rather than replacing blown bulbs one at a time.

A top tip is to use RC quenching elements as a preventive measure when installing LED lighting for the first time to ensure that your LED lighting functions perfectly and permanently.

The benefits of LED lighting are clear, and those who prepared adequately and made the switch early are already reaping the rewards. The sooner you switch, the sooner you can start saving on energy costs, particularly now that halogen bulb stocks are running down. Good lighting has been proven to increase productivity in the workplace, which is therefore extremely important to many employees. FRESH LIGHT FOR AN ESTABLISHED KINGDOM When Kingdom Housing Association required an overhaul of its lighting provisions, it quickly found that Scolmore had the ideal range of solutions.

Here’s details on how the ongoing project has boosted safety, saved time, and cut down costs.

W

ith responsibility for over 4,000 domestic properties, and in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Fifebased social landlord, Kingdom Housing Association, decided to act immediately to increase the general and emergency lighting provision in all their communal areas – over and above any likely guidance emanating from the Hackitt report.

Aiming to keep their tenants as safe as possible, and not wanting to wait for inquiry findings, Kingdom Housing decided to go ahead with a proposal to retrofit emergency lighting into existing blocks of three storeys and above that did not already have this fitted. The challenge they faced was to procure a product that did not require rewiring, as most of these blocks were wired in two core cabling.

With the need to keep costs, installation time and disruption to a minimum, and with various products given consideration, it was Scolmore’s innovative Evo LED bulkheads that provided the solution to this full refit project.

Andy Walls, Kingdom Housing Association’s Property Maintenance Manager, was responsible for overseeing the installation project. He explains, “After researching various products, we found that Scolmore’s Inceptor Evo LED Bulkhead range was ideal in meeting with our specifications. The fitting is capable

of working on two core cabling, whilst still providing battery supply for the emergency operation of the fittings.”

He continues, “The fitting is also capable of supplying a background light during the day, as it has the capability to have the LEDs on at a reduced rating or turned off fully. This also suited our needs, as we have several blocks that have darker areas, and this would also provide better security and comfort to our tenants.”

Designed with the contractor in mind The Inceptor Evo Bulkhead was designed

by Scolmore with the contractor very much in mind. It is quick to install and simple to use, offering a number of features unmatched by competitor products. As well as integrating the control gear and the light source within the diffuser, the bulkhead has the added benefit of a Flow plug, which allows for fast and simple connection and disconnection for testing and maintenance of the luminaire.

re-attach the gear tray and re-screw the diffuser. Scolmore has taken away the need for time-consuming and unnecessary screws and integrated the control gear and light source within the diffuser and added a Flow connector. The installer, therefore, simply removes the diffuser, fits the base to the wall/ceiling, wires the conductor into the flow connector, and secures the diffuser in place.

The products specified for installation

by Kingdom Housing Association were the Evo microwave sensor, and the emergency version for the emergency lighting provision; while the Evo standard bulkhead was chosen as the replacement for the general lighting.

Walls continues, “With the responsibility for overseeing the installation and project budgeting, I had to ensure that everything was carefully considered to ensure we are getting the very best value from the products and services we utilise. Scolmore has enabled us to save time and money on a lot of aspects of this project, as well as ensuring delivery of the product to meet our timescales.

A decade-long lifespan “The fact that the bulkheads are so quick and easy to install, with the minimum amount of cabling and no rewiring required, meant a huge saving in labour costs. With no disruption from major works in the common areas for us and our tenants, it

meant that health and safety issues were minimised, along with noise and mess.

In addition, the energy efficiency of these bulkheads, plus the minimum amount of maintenance required to service them, all added up to a positive situation for us.”

The return on investment that was projected by Scolmore was also appealing.

Walls notes, “The projected life of the units is 50,000 hours, meaning we won’t need to replace these for 10 years. With no maintenance visits required to replace the old 2D fluorescent fittings approximately every two years, this more than pays for the new units with no ongoing maintenance costs. The degradation of the light fittings is also far less than the fluorescent type, thus providing our tenants with a good light source during the lifespan of the fitting.

“We also looked at the environmental aspect of the project and concluded that we would be reducing the pollution to the environment from not having to recycle the old fluorescent tubes – eliminating the harmful gases and pollutants that these products produce and also using less energy over the lifespan of the product.”

KEEP IN TUNE WITH THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM Creating the right lighting atmosphere can have a huge impact on the wellbeing of both mind and body. I

t is well-known that human beings are tuned in to daily cycles of light and darkness, and the mind and body can be affected when deprived of nature’s 24-hour daily light cycle. Sunlight gives our bodies the cues for sleeping and waking up, and long periods of low light during the winter may disrupt the body clock so much that it leads to symptoms of seasonal affective disorder.

Recent research has identified some of the mechanisms whereby the body processes sunlight; for example, in producing hormones like melatonin and serotonin – hormones that influence mood, appetite and sleep. As well as light intensity, other characteristics of light help to keep the human body synchronised with the natural circadian rhythm.

This brings potential benefits to productivity, mood and concentration, as well as lowering error and accident rates.

Human centric lighting is based on these principles, essentially creating interior environments that support circadian stimuli.

Tuneable LEDs, that change both colour and light intensity, can be programmed to modulate the light intensity and colour temperature of the lighting environment throughout the working day.

Suitable lamps and luminaires Circadian lighting solutions rely on luminaires that hold multiple light sources to provide a range of colour temperatures – for example, 3,000K and 5,500K white light.

Such a solution requires specific drivers to provide flicker-free tuning of the light output, which allow users to modify white colour temperature and intensity to their preference, within the same fixture, thus being able to deliver colour-tuneable white lighting which supports the circadian rhythm. This can now be automated with technical advancements in more sophisticated lighting controls.

With Light Boss, lighting networks are quick and easy to design, as well as install and maintain. Software enables users to upload their floorplan – existing or proposed – for quick lighting layout creation, via easy-to-use ‘drag and drop’ tools. Once installed, Light Boss creates a digital network, where luminaires communicate wirelessly.

Unlike other software, Light Boss does not rely on Zigbee, Mesh or Bluetooth wireless communications networks. The channels of these networks are very ‘noisy’, meaning that lighting commands can get held up behind other building services. The Light Boss commands, however, are uninterrupted; ensuring lighting reacts without any delay or interference.

Setting or adjusting the lighting can be achieved without any wiring changes. Luminaires can be added or replaced and reconfigured at the touch of a button. Unlike other control networks, Light Boss is ideal when refurbishing or adapting internal layouts and eliminates the need for expensive re-commissioning.

Many lighting control solutions require add-on functionality (and cost) in order to manipulate multi-white tuneable LEDs with varying colour temperatures. However, Light Boss can control and schedule colour temperature straight out of the box. It enables control across the correlated colour temperature spectrum (2,700K to 6,000K), allowing users to fine-tune the desired colour temperature according to the application.

In this way, human centric lighting can be adopted easily and cost effectively, for example, choosing a warmer colour temperature to mimic mid-morning light, or a cooler colour temperature to mimic late evening light. MODULAR LIGHTING FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY When an innovative lighting solution was required for a new office space near Glasgow, CP Electronics – along with electrical contractor AKD – came up with a modular system that can be adapted to meet ever-changing needs. ECN looks at how the project unfolded.

T

he latest in a prestigious range of commercial developments across Scotland, the Maxim 10 office building marks yet another significant landmark project for lighting controls specialist, CP Electronics, and electrical contractor, AKD. Completing their part of the project within a rapid nine months, both companies have helped the investor achieve the objective of a safe, comfortable and energy efficient space.

Conveniently located in Eurocentral – one of the largest industrial estates

in Scotland – and part of the recently completed Maxim Office Park, Maxim 10 provides 60,000m2 of commercial office space over four floors. Built as a shell, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cheshire based electrical contractor, AKD, worked with long-term partner, CP Electronics, to design and specify a modular lighting system which is flexible enough to meet changing needs.

The building comprises a mix of open plan areas, meeting rooms, corridors and storage space, with a capacity on the ground floor alone for over 200 workstations. To ensure maximum energy efficiency, each floor is divided into smaller clusters, typically with either four, six, 10

or 12 workstations. Throughout Maxim 10 is a lighting control system that ensures lights are only ever in use when a person is present.

A flexible and easy-to-use lighting solution “This was a challenging project,” says Brian Hedley, Area Sales Manager of CP Electronics. “The building was due to be handed over in just 12 months’ time, so the clock was ticking. To meet the project timeline and energy efficiency specification, we used our Vitesse Modular lighting control system. It’s a highly flexible and easy to use solution which enables a huge variety of configurations.”

By combining two-way and four-way starter and extender modules, CP’s Vitesse Modular system enables all lighting needs to be met with a simple plug-and-play solution. Once in place, it was simply a question of plugging in the luminaires and necessary PIR detection systems into the lighting control modules (LCMs).

To ensure maximum detection and reach at optimal cost, two types of PIR were used. In the larger areas, mid-range PIRs gave 16m by 6m coverage, while in smaller spaces (including storage cupboards), the standard PIRs provided a detection pattern of 7m. Lights were programmed to timeout after 20 minutes, keeping energy usage to a minimum.

way variations, along with 167 extension modules and 144 PIRs. In addition, just over 1,000 of CP Electronics’ pre-wired luminaire leads were used to save even more time during installation.

A seamless and trouble-free project From start to finish, the lighting controls part of the project took just nine months.

Design and specification began in June 2018 and was completed by mid-August 2019. Installation for the ground floor took six weeks, with just a month needed for each of the other three floors. Initial lighting was completed by December 2018, well in time for the handover by March 2019.

While the plug-and-play system undoubtedly helped accelerate installation, another important factor came during the commissioning phase. With each floor similar in layout, and Vitesse Modular LCMs used throughout, CP Electronics only needed to commission the ground floor.

After that, AKD was able to commission the further three floors by themselves. This was made possible with a preprogrammed handset which sets timeout with a simple push of a button.

“From start to finish, it’s been pretty much a seamless and trouble-free project,” explains Keith Groom, Managing Director at AKD. “I’ve been impressed again with the simplicity of everything – including the product selection and ease of installation.

Most importantly, the end client is suitably impressed with the ease of operation and pleased with the knowledge that the building is as energy efficient as possible.”

LET THERE BE LIGHT Paul Jones, Director UK and Ireland of BEG Lighting Controls, explains the importance of lighting controls, and outlines why they shouldn’t be consigned to merely a dot on a page.

W In our current world, there’s no excuse for lighting controls to be overlooked by lighting designers, Paul Jones argues.

hen lighting designers take on a scheme they commonly consider (in detail) the type of lights needed, along with the quantity and positioning of the lights. However, in our experience, all too often designers are missing a trick by reducing the actual all-important lighting controls to merely a dot on the page.

When lighting controls were basic, simple units, a simple pencil ‘dot’ may have covered the main consideration of where sensors would be located in the space. But that time is firmly in the past as, with the giant strides in technology that have been made, lighting controls are now extremely sophisticated, with near endless possibilities for the function and control of the light.

Anyone designing lighting with their customer, or indeed, the actual end-user in mind, should be fully aware of the range of options and variations, and be ready to stipulate exactly which lighting control they specifically require for each particular

room or zone.

In our current world – where there are systems and sensors to save energy, save money, make lighting suitable for flexible spaces, or adaptable for different times of day, rooms or activities – there’s no excuse for lighting controls to be overlooked by lighting designers. There is no such thing as ‘one size fits all’ lighting control solution. A dot just doesn’t cut it anymore.

A more informed brief for a better result To enable a designer to make the right lighting decisions when taking on a brief, the basic information they need to know is what the room or space is for, which activities will be carried out there, and how the room should look; all of which informs which lights are selected.

When gathering information to inform lighting control decisions, the obvious questions would be about the mechanics of the system – such as which switches or remote controls are needed, or whether a handy smartphone app is more suitable for ease of use. Do the lights need to be

limited by a timer function or be reactive to the available light in the room?

Physical factors of the space, such as the height of the room, also need to be taken into account, as some sensors can be used on very high ceilings, whilst others can’t, or if the ceiling is suspended, is flat or cut-out as this will also have a bearing on which sensor should be specified.

However, when thinking about the full range of possibilities that current lighting controls offer, it’s like adding the fourth dimension to the brief, and extra information is needed to make the right choices. For example, how should the lighting in the room work? Is it a multifunctional room requiring different intensities or colours of light for different activities? Is it a room with ‘zones’ which can be defined by different levels of lighting?

If it’s a corridor that should be lit at 10% when vacant, but increase to 100% when occupied, should it light up entirely? Or in sections as it is used? If occupancy sensors are used in larger rooms, which sections of the room should trigger the light? If needed, masks can be installed to make sure that the sensor is only activated in certain areas.

Lighting controls for a customer-centric approach Asking these questions of a customer for the brief can make for a well-rounded and fulfilling designer-client relationship, and can ensure that the final result delivers against all the levels of the build brief, often exceeding customer expectations.

For example, cutting down energy consumption can be a key concern for facilities managers, and, of course goes hand-in-hand with financial savings for companies and organisations. Specifying the right lighting controls within each room can optimise the energy, and cost savings of around 30% can be made.

This may even mean recommending top of the range sensors and systems which come with an initial higher outlay. But if the customer understands there is a longerterm saving, they are likely to be on board with the decision.

Another example might be designing a school which has multiple rooms, each with a different purpose. Classrooms may benefit from some of the most advanced lighting control technology available, and actually subliminally influence the teaching experience. For example, a whiter light can be used to increase the productivity of students, and a warmer yellow light can help calm an over-excited class. When you add to this the opportunity to dim certain areas to focus the class on the smart board, or create a reading zone, the potential of what can be achieved by lighting controls alone, is almost endless.

Many schools in modern buildings also desire flexible spaces, in which walls and furniture can be moved to give the room multiple uses. The lighting can again be a key feature to enable the full flexibility of the room.

By using the full range of lighting controls available, the designer can create a school that works harder, more effectively and efficiently than other school buildings, while positively influencing the quality of the teaching and learning in the process. Imagine if the designer of such a school were to overlook the possibilities of the lighting scheme and neglected the lighting controls in this way?

Lighting options available to all Of course, not all lighting schemes have the benefit of a dedicated designer. It’s one of my firm beliefs that it’s equally important that anyone involved in choosing lighting controls has the best information about all the options at their disposal.

Electrical contractors may well be faced with a dreaded ‘dot on the plan’, meaning it is up to them to interpret which sensors to use. Daunting perhaps in a new build, and all too often when carrying out a refit, the temptation is to simply replace the sensors, like with like.

This holds two risks: the original sensor may be outdated, so there may now be a much better one for the job, and also, if the function of the room has changed, the previous sensor may not be the right one. In this instance, it is much better for a lighting contractor to be equipped with their own knowledge of lighting controls to make informed decisions. LIGHTING UP THE WORKPLACE WELLNESS REVOLUTION New research indicates that UK businesses are preparing to spend more than ever before on measures to enhance workplace wellness. Improving lighting can be one of the more straightforward but most important steps, says Tamlite Head of Wellness, Debbie-Sue Farrell.

he ‘workplace wellness’ concept has been gaining significant traction during the last decade. But until relatively recently, it was clear that the extent to which admittedly wellintentioned words were translating to solid actions was rather variable.

Fresh indication that this is changing is provided by a new report from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) - a global non-profit research and education organisation focused on the built environment.

‘Picture of health: the growing role

of wellbeing in commercial real estate investment decision-making’ presents data from the first comprehensive survey of leading property experts into understanding health and wellbeing. Drawing on interviews with more than 100 investors, developers, fund managers, consultants, valuers and analysts, the report explores the ways in which the wellbeing agenda is influencing investment decisions across the real estate industry.

Although the report suggests that “strong performance reasons to invest in wellbeing” are yet to become discernible to some investors and developers, the overall thrust is positive. It states that “providing a

workspace that promotes better health and wellbeing has become a fast-adopted trend within the UK real estate industry.”

Reinforcing this positive impression is the headline statistic that 86% of survey respondents expect to increase their investment in wellbeing in the next three years, with 17% anticipating that the increase will be ‘significant’. The composition of these investments will obviously be determined by the nature and requirements of individual companies, but in almost all cases, it is probable that lighting – now firmly established as an important determinant factor in workplace wellness – will be a prominent part of the mix.

Lighting control and circadian rhythms The ULI report has much to say on the subject of lighting. The importance of allowing natural light to suffuse buildings as much as possible is a given at this point.

But in terms of technology, the report states that “for tenants, the most popular changes spoken about were the impact of acoustics and lighting – [including the use of] circadian lighting or putting lighting control in the hands of users, if natural light was not available.”

Providing a workspace that promotes better health and wellbeing has become a fastadopted trend within the UK real estate industry.

In these, and other respects, the latest generation of LED-based systems can make it significantly easier to achieve lighting that is conducive to good health.

The ability of LED lighting to provide a more appealing and consistent standard of illumination – with extended product life-cycles and far fewer failures than traditional lighting – is hardly new. But what has emerged in more recent years is a new tier of tunable systems that make it possible to closely mirror circadian rhythms – in other words, the 24-hour cycle that synchronises bodily functions in humans and animals.

The efficiency of modern lighting goes up a further gear when used in conjunction with motion sensors and overarching control systems. These make it possible to use and direct light where and when it is required. Lighting control means that schedules and ‘states’ can be created and retained, allowing the lighting to match the requirements of the working space – however those may shift as the day or night progresses.

Flexible lighting for employers and employees

Lighting is a fantastic starting point for any company’s wellness journey, Debbie-Sue Farrell explains.

Depending on the nature of the workplace – not to mention the extent to which employers feel comfortable with handing over this kind of responsibility – employees themselves may be able to alter the lighting to meet their preferences. “Technology options are starting to grow,” says the ULI report, and “apps are now becoming more common that put the controls for lighting and heating in the hands of employees; just having the control is an improvement to

their wellbeing.”

There is now a surfeit of anecdotal and academic evidence that points to good lighting contributing to increased productivity and employee morale. That is obviously great news for employers, but it’s only one way in which they stand to benefit. Current LED systems are often as much as 60% more efficient than traditional equivalents, while lifetimes of 50,000 hours are increasingly commonplace. With a dramatic reduction in the probable number of system failures, lighting-related expenses – including those linked to maintenance and support – will be much lower.

By looking at lighting in isolation in this way, it is easy to ascertain the positive contribution that can be made by building systems individually – not to mention collectively. No wonder, then, that in considering the future of workplace wellness, the ULI report asserts that “technology to make buildings smart – whether it’s about the bricks and mortar or how people are using the building – looks set to be an important next step, particularly for on-the-ground operations.”

SCHOOLS FOR THE FUTURE Thorn Lighting tells ECN how it is supporting Scotland’s Schools for the Future programme; detailing why lighting plays a fundamental role in creating an effective learning environment.

A key criterion for the lighting was that it should provide a comfortable and pleasant working environment for students and staff, whilst aiding effective learning, social interaction, and increasing energy savings with the use of LEDs. As part of a project to create education facilities that are fit for the future, the new school was constructed within the existing grounds in order to minimise disruption to children and staff. T

he government has made no secret of its intent to support lower carbon energy sources in order to reduce the carbon impact of heating and cooling our buildings.

From battery storage and heat pumps, to electric heating appliances that can deliver domestic heating aligned with renewable energy generation, decarbonisation of the grid is critical if we are to achieve our ambitious environmental targets.

But what does it mean for you, the installer? Here are four reasons to include electric heating in your repertoire.

Energy policy Ultimately, the heating industry is largely driven by the UK’s energy policy and EU obligations to reduce carbon emissions – including phasing out unabated coal by 2025.

This shift away from intensive fossil fuels such as coal and oil in favour of gas has delivered almost all of the improvement that it is capable of, and the next phase of decarbonisation is maximising the contribution of renewable energy sources. This will likely mean that electric heating and hot water systems will gain compliance with ease, and inevitably become more cost-effective.

SAP methodology As a result, electric space and water heating has become more ‘attractive’ to install, especially in new properties. In fact, data from the new SAP 10 methodology – which is the government’s recommended system for measuring the energy rating of new dwellings – shows that the carbon factor of electric heating is now just 0.233 gCO2/kWh (down from 0.519 gCO2/kWh when SAP 2012 was introduced).

Under this methodology, electric heating is more carbon efficient than gas heating after adjusting for system efficiency – a substantial shift which is reflective of the government’s commitment to decarbonise energy supply through electrification.

It means heat pumps and installed electric heating appliances will perform even better in SAP 10, offering a potentially cheaper, compliant heating and hot water solution when compared to other fuels such as gas. In SAP 2012, electric panel heaters combined with an electric hot water heat pump is already an attractive solution for many new buildings. This will likely increase under the new methodology.

continues to support electric technologies, manufacturers are investing heavily in research and development of electric heating solutions.

When addressing the energy use of existing properties, the Dimplex Quantum off-peak heating system, for example, offers a significant improvement in EPC rating over conventional static storage heaters. But the technology will never stand still, with further updates in the pipeline to support connectivity and integration with other devices throughout the home.

In addition, all ‘fixed’ electric space heating appliances in the UK must now adhere to a minimum energy efficiency standard under Lot 20 of the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive. Many products were redesigned by manufacturers as a result to include integral controls with added intelligence – further improving their energy saving potential for homeowners.

In essence, Lot 20 has delivered a better standard of product. Even entry-level products have energy saving functionality as standard, whilst manufacturers have worked hard to incorporate even more advanced technology into the controls of higher spec appliances. This includes functions such as anticipatory warmup control and on-board open window detection, which simply didn’t exist just a few years ago.

Water heating Another key area of innovation is water heating, which has come to the fore particularly in new homes, where yearround water heating has become the dominant load.

This trend has forced the industry to look beyond insulation and space heating when aiming to improve the SAP rating of a property, taking advantage of innovations like Dimplex’s Edel hot water heat pump cylinder to meet the renewable energy requirement and deliver low carbon hot water year-round.

BEWARE OF THE FALSE ECONOMY

With a new directive insisting that the installation of heaters without controllers is not permitted, Prefect Controls explains why its latest control unit is perfect for student accommodations.

T

he LOT20 Directive, that ensures the efficiency of electric heaters, has been in force since January 2018. The headline rule is that the installation of heaters without controls is not permitted. This has been remedied by new installations being fulfilled using integrated control heaters available from many manufacturers.

This is acceptable for domestic situations where an easy to use, 24/7 programmer satisfies the occupants’ need to adjust the comfort of their environment, easily. In more demanding situations, such as student accommodation, these domestic heaters are, at face value, a cost-effective solution. However, when their features are compared with a control unit specifically designed for these environments, the savings made on hardware and installation are soon eroded by higher energy costs.

But why would the energy costs be higher?

Although the majority of integrated control heaters are designed to avoid children being able to tamper with the controls, in university dwellings, students will take five minutes to ‘Google’ the controls; establishing that pressing two buttons simultaneously, or holding a button down for three seconds, immediately gives them access to control temperature, which can then be set and left at maximum, permanently. Within a few more minutes, a social media post relays this ‘heating hack’ to all fellow occupants, and suddenly the meter starts whirring like a Waltzer at the funfair.

HEATING UP THE FUTURE Legislative changes, regulatory updates and product developments regularly impact the electrical heating industry, leaving electrical contractors with unanswered questions. Alan Clarke, Technical Support Manager at Heatrae Sadia, addresses these in our latest FAQ feature.

What is SAP? Acronyms – this industry sure does love them. But they’re of no use if no-one understands them. SAP has made frequent appearances in the news recently. To put it succinctly, SAP is the Government’s Standard Assessment Procedure for calculating predicted energy use and the resulting carbon dioxide emissions from a dwelling.

You should be aware that its primary use is as the main compliance tool for Building Regulations Part L1A, and it is also used to produce the property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).

The calculations are based on the home’s energy balance over one year, taking into account a range of energy efficiency factors. The SAP calculation provides other information on a dwelling, including the Target Emissions Rate (TER) and the Dwelling Fabric Energy Efficiency (DFEE).

What does SAP 10 mean for the industry?

Published in July 2018, SAP 10 will replace SAP 2012 once Part L / Section 6 of the Building Regulations is updated. The publication of SAP 10 revealed that the CO2 emission factor of electricity has been reduced from 0.519 kgCO2/kWh to 0.233 kgCO2/kWh. This puts it only marginally behind mains gas at 0.210 kgCO2/kWh.

Will electrical appliances benefit from SAP 10?

SAP 10 will ensure that a more contemporary approach to electrical hot water generation within residential dwellings is taken – meaning that it’s likely to become a better proposition for major multi-occupancy developments.

The changes to the carbon emissions factor of electricity is a game-changer in the industry, as suddenly – at least on paper – CHP and gas boilers begin to look less attractive than electrically powered heating systems. Additionally, the revised carbon factor of electricity makes electrical heating a viable choice for landlords looking to improve their EPC rating.

Where would homes benefit from electrical heat and hot water appliances?

It’s estimated that around two million UK homes (15%) are not connected to the mains gas network. Rural developments and high-rise buildings are driving this percentage ever higher.

Electric boilers offer a valuable means of heating and hot water generation for those who lack a connection to the gas grid. The dual capabilities of some electric boiler models make them uniquely suited for those living in rural developments.

Take, for example, the Electromax. It can provide both controllable wet central heating supply and hot water using only a mains electrical connection and a coldwater supply. Additionally, electric boilers such as the Electromax use standard radiators and thermostatic radiator valves.

In addition to rural properties, high-rise properties have been a boon for electrical wet central heating. Compact and efficient electric flow boilers are now seen as a viable choice for high-rise apartments and flats. Such boilers are controlled and operated by a programmer and thermostat, working in a similar way to a traditional gas-fired boiler. High-rise homes can have

their hot water delivered by an electric boiler paired with a direct cylinder.

Do I need to be Gas Safe Registered to install an electric boiler?

Unlike in the gas industry, where there is a requirement for installers to be Gas Safe Registered to install a boiler, there is no similar requirement for those installing electric boilers. Engineers can build confidence in their customer base by proving their competence by demonstrating membership of an electrical trade body.

Alan predicts that a certification scheme will be introduced for electrical products – particularly in high-rise homes.

How important is an assessment of the circuitry before installing a boiler?

Will an ‘electrical safety certificate’ soon be required?

Checking the condition of the wiring is an important consideration for heating engineers. This is particularly important in retrofits, as the circuitry may not be up to current standards; owing to their high-power usage, electric boilers need their own dedicated circuit.

Importantly, to ensure a safe installation, the ratings of switches such as isolators must be considered and adjusted where necessary.

A gas safety check is mandatory for landlords every 12 months.

This must be done on all gas appliances – hobs, fireplaces, boilers etc. – to prove that they are safe to use. An engineer will provide the landlord with a Gas Safety Record. There is no such requirement currently in place for safety checks on electric boilers or water heaters.

However, in the wake of the Grenfell Tower incident and the subsequent Hackett Review, I would expect some sort of certification scheme to be introduced for electrical products – particularly in high-rise homes. I do not believe that it will be as onerous as a gas safety check, but any legislation that is introduced to bolster the safety of residents is a real positive step forward for the electrical heating and hot water industry.

Does an electric boiler still need to be serviced?

In short, yes. It’s best practice to check the installation of the electric boiler on a regular basis. As such, it’s important to arrange a regular service visit to the customer’s property.

Contractors should be checking the safety valves and ancillary components, along with any wiring which should be checked for discolouration – this is likely to have occurred if a connection has not been made properly, or the wrong sized cable has been used.

Where next for the industry?

This is a question that I am often asked. I predict that we will begin to make greater use of heat pumps to warm our homes, and there will likely be an uplift in demand for cylinders.

usinesses are more than just the people who run them. They are also buildings, facilities and, increasingly, technology and IT infrastructures. To be successful, it is crucial for all these varied but interlinked functions to communicate and work together. Yet, a great number of businesses do not seem to be getting the message.

When you design or operate a siloed business, decisions or actions in one area can have unforeseen ramifications in another. Sometimes the system can be unreliable, key functions can be rendered

inoperable and, whilst the business waits for everything to be fixed, the operations suffer. Key functions, such as building management, become expensive to run and, whilst crucial operations, contribute very little to business profits.

The ‘customer architecture’ is a philosophy or design principle that helps you turn your power and technology infrastructure from a cost of business into an asset. With the right approach and the power of the Internet of Things (IoT), it’s possible to link together all the elements of a large project, such as a construction project, to maximise efficiency, reliability and operability. This minimises both operational expenditure and initial capital expenditure through design efficiencies.

The customer architecture principle can be applied to many applications: electrical, for power train fault level optimisation, cascading, selectivity and grading coordination; mechanical, for cooling, HVAC and distribution; and IT and communications, for infrastructure, visibility, apps and analytics.

Integrating this functionality can lead to space and cost efficiencies, maintaining or enhancing lead-times while mitigating design risk and implementation delays.

Embedding them early in the process means you can enjoy the benefits of a connected approach from the beginning and avoids the costs of needing to install them down the line.

Indeed, an integrated design, construction, installation and commissioning may deliver substantial efficiency – 13% overall savings on integration and engineering costs when monitoring and control are integrated into the design.

Yet, the benefits of an integrated and connected approach are found at the operations level. Connected solutions provide an unprecedented level of insights and capabilities. From a building’s power infrastructure, to its lighting and HVAC, connected devices can collect reliability, availability, maintenance, environmental and status data, giving managers complete visibility into their facilities.

This visibility allows managers to see what is happening at all times, letting them respond to problems rapidly and even anticipate issues before they occur. This is the foundation of predictive maintenance, where device health can be accurately monitored with issues identified and resolved before they can turn into crises, leading to less downtime and avoiding the cost of expensive repairs. An example of this is the PowerTag wireless energy sensor for asset management, and wireless temperature sensors which can be used on transformer connections to detect potential maintenance issues.

A connected technology architecture also allows you to identify efficiencies across operations. Energy costs are consistently one of a business’s largest outgoings, but with the capabilities to measure and monitor energy usage, it becomes easy to spot areas where it is being wasted. Once inefficient energy use has been identified – such as when a building’s management system is not maintained or optimised – the functionality can be monitored remotely and switched into low-power states, saving energy and money.

The goal is to move from an architecture of individual parts and products to one that is based on applications that integrate, communicate and work together. Instead of working to control one product at a time, you are leveraging the infrastructure, data and information with an application that monitors and controls all the connected equipment in the building. This is the definition of business transformation.

Safety in numbers Using a common coordinated philosophy across all elements of a building or facility architecture, and in turn utilising the information from its operating system, can enable greater operational safety and system reliability. A case in point is how connected architectures are being used to mitigate the dangers of arc flash.

An arc flash is a dangerous electrical event that involves an uncontrolled release of energy, emitting deadly levels of gas, heat, pressure and light. The causes are various, ranging from insulation breakdown to a foreign metal object making contact within an electrical assembly, but it always poses a major danger to operators and potentially employees and property.

However, by utilising arc flash detection and prevention technologies, fire risk can be reduced, and operator safety increased with the customer architectures approach as a backbone to ensure a coordinated full project approach. Indeed, recent IEC draft technical documents TR 61641 and 63107 ED1 advise on the integration of arc flash solutions into low voltage switchgear and control gear assemblies for personnel protection, arc flash protection and mitigation.

The key to mitigating the danger of arc flash is understanding the incident energy level (IEL) present in the environment. Once this is known, a connected approach to protection should be adopted. This should involve personal protection equipment for operators and insulation levels within the switchgear environment, but also connected maintenance practices.

Unitrunk, a manufacturer of cable management systems, explains its decision to introduce ‘commercial leads’; detailing how this presents wholesalers the opportunity to upsell and add value.

W

e live in a world where everyone is used to getting what they want on demand, and in real time.

From streaming movies at home to ordering a takeaway on the internet, it is an increasingly small step from asking the question to getting a response. Yet, in the electrical supply chain, this culture of rapid turnaround still has some catching up to do – a situation that manufacturer of cable management systems, Unitrunk, aims to address with the company’s decision to introduce ‘commercial leads’ into its sales and customer support teams.

Opportunity to upsell and add value Unitrunk recognises that many contractors still view cable management systems – ladder, tray and basket, for example – as commodity items and are looking for the best price with the fastest delivery.

However, the cable manufacturer identifies this as an opportunity for wholesalers to upsell and add value to customer relationships by supporting better product selection and delivering improved customer service. But this can only be achieved if the supply chain infrastructure is in place to facilitate a completely joined up, efficient and seamless customer journey and that is exactly what the appointment of Unitrunk’s commercial leads has been designed to do.

Martin Gregg, Commercial Manager at Unitrunk explains, “Our approach has never been to sell on a cheapest price basis because our products are high quality, design-led cable management systems that help contractors reduce the installed cost of the project by reducing installation times on site.

“Rapid turnaround is also a key differentiator, and this is an area where we can steal a march on others in the sector and support wholesalers in winning the

order. We can do this by responding quickly and accurately to enquiries, suggesting cost saving opportunities and enabling a choice of delivery and collection options, including same day pick up from any of our nine locations in the UK and Ireland, or next day delivery to the wholesaler or direct to site. We can also be flexible with production schedules so that standard items are always available from stock and special orders can be processed quickly.”

In addition to its two manufacturing facilities in Lisburn in Northern Ireland and Warrington, Unitrunk has seven distribution depots – Harlow; Bristol; Wolverhampton; Manchester; Newcastle; Livingstone and Dublin – providing a wide geographical reach across the UK and Ireland. The new commercial leads are now based in all of these depots, working alongside the customer support and sales teams at each depot to provide a fast and efficient customer interface for wholesalers while helping to drive sales enquiries to the

wholesaler network by engaging directly with contractors.

Martin continues, “In our experience, contractors want to see proactive and efficient customer service. It gives them confidence that their needs will be supported and their order will arrive on time every time. The supply chain must be able to respond quickly because contractors are under increased pressure to deliver jobs on time within tight schedules.

“We only supply contractors through wholesalers and we want to support wholesalers’ relationships with their customers in any way we can. Putting the commercial leads in place enables us to join up the sales process, adding value to contractor/wholesaler relationships by offering technical support, specification guidance and a point of contact that can offer a fast response on any question, including pricing.”

Effective communication Amongst the commercial leads that Unitrunk has appointed to its depot network is Keith Quinlan, Commercial Lead at the Harlow depot. An electrical industry specialist who has spent 22 years in the wholesale sector, Keith understands how the market has evolved over the years and the challenges facing wholesalers.

Keith comments, “There has always been a need for good customer service but purchasing decisions never used to be so driven by deadlines, and deadlines never used to be so tight. Now, an order can be won or lost on how quickly the wholesaler gets back to the customer with a cost, or how fast the goods can be delivered or collected, and we want to ensure that we support wholesalers in raising the bar for speed of response so that they can win business and nurture contractor relationships.”

With commercial leads now in place for each of the Unitrunk depots, the new members of the team are busy meeting both wholesalers and contractors faceto-face to develop an understanding of what they can do for wholesalers and their customers.

“The response we’ve had when we’ve gone in to see wholesalers has been 100% positive so far,” Keith continues. “It’s clear that they like the product range, want to engage with Unitrunk and are receptive to working with us to drive demand through the wholesale channel. Indeed, some have even given me a list of contractors that they’d like us to meet with because they trust us to work in partnership with them and they know we would never sell direct to the contractor.

“We know wholesalers need fast and efficient supply chain partners because their customers rely on product availability to keep the job moving. As the only cable management company with a national depot network and agile in-house production capabilities to enable fast turnaround on bespoke orders, we are uniquely placed to answer that need for responsiveness.

“It’s also clear that effective communication is critical as part of a seamless approach to customer service across the supply chain: our ability to keep wholesalers up to speed with the progress of their order and provide a credible response to any enquiry means that they can manage their own customers’ expectations all the way through the sales process.”

Flexible remit While Unitrunk’s new commercial leads are based at the company’s depots, the role does not require that they are tied to the depot, far from it.

“It’s a flexible remit,” Martin explains, “Which has been designed to leverage the value of our supply network and bring an additional element into the customer experience that sits between the sales process and after sales support.”

While the role includes a sales element and the commercial leads are working closely with Unitrunk’s field sales team, Martin sees the commercial leads as a value added link in the sales delivery chain.

“Conventionally,” Keith explains, “A sales person from the manufacturer will respond to a sales enquiry from the wholesaler and price up what they have been asked for – it’s a straight forward transaction that’s ideal for making a like for like cost comparison. At Unitrunk, however, we don’t sell cable management as a commodity, we sell it as a solution, so there’s a lot more to providing a quote and a spec than costing up a list of components.

“A big part of my new role is to interpret the initial sales enquiry and understand

whether there is a better alternative or more cost-effective way of supplying the job. Often that means talking to the contractor as part of our service to the wholesaler. Ultimately, we don’t want to sell more product for a job than it really needs. Similarly, we don’t want the contractor to miss out on prime cost savings that could be made by reducing labour costs on site. The availability of a commercial lead within each depot means that we can calculate costs and provide alternative quotes, supporting the wholesaler in helping their customer make informed decisions.”

nsuring electrical supplies arrive on time and in perfect condition is essential for most electrical installation projects. Be ready to receive goods and forecast demand Forecasting and managing demand is essential for effective stock management.

Poor stock management will often lead to large batches of stock spending long periods of time in the warehouse or worse still, on-site, which could ultimately increase the chances of damage.

Understanding demand also allows you to prepare for sudden spikes in volumes, ensuring you can cope with the added pressure of delivering items as quickly as possible and avoiding disruption to regular orders. This isn’t always easy with large and bulky freight, as it can be harder to predict when these spikes might hit. Implement careful preshipment safety measures When delivering a leg yourself, it is essential to put in place numerous safety measures to protect both the drivers and the packages they’re transporting.

Fitting safety nets and other load restraint devices can provide protection from falling items, and limits items from moving in transit. Vehicle cameras also help to provide greater assurance for drivers in the event of an incident so that, if need be, they can make well-informed changes to procedures to avoid recurring incidents in the future.

If shipping high value items, it’s important to insure against damage and theft to avoid incurring costs. A prudent step is also to package items appropriately and, where necessary, wrap them with black sheet.

RETROFIT SURGE PROTECTION UNIT BY LEWDEN In addition to the range of SPDs in Type 2 and Combined Type 1, 2 and 3, Lewden has introduced a new Retrofit Surge Protection Unit that meets with the requirements of the 18th Edition regulations BS7671:2018, section 534.

This easy to install, self-contained metal enclosure connects in parallel to the existing consumer unit without any need for modification to the unit; and has been designed for retrofitting application to provide protection of electrical appliances against impulse surges where it is not possible to accommodate an SPD directly within the existing consumer unit due to space limitation.
