or the second supplement of 2018, and for the first time in an ECN supplement, we turn our focus to the world of wiring accessories. There might be a smart revolution taking the world by storm, but wiring accessories are here to stay for – at the very least – the foreseeable future. From switches to sockets, the right wiring accessories not only set the tone of an installation, offering the perfect finish to a job well done, but also need to offer compliance to regulations and hardwearing performance. Within this supplement, you’ll hear about the changes ahead in the 18th Edition and how RCDs will fit into the new regulations, as well as how choosing the right wiring accessories can offer contractors the edge in their business offering, and how building relationships with the right brands can be vital. The humble wiring accessory is still as important as ever.

FINISHING TOUCH Choosing the appropriate wiring accessories throughout the home can have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of a property, taking an interior design scheme to the next level of chic. Gavin Williams, marketing manager at Hamilton Litestat, tells us more.

W

iring accessories are often an afterthought when decorating, redesigning or even extending a home. Yet they’re always on show so can affect the overall look and continuity of a design scheme. Today’s homeowners are looking for hotel-style luxury and electrical solutions can help achieve this sought-after finish, through excellent design and a variety of finishes.

Plug in, switch on In the kitchen, the first thing you do is plug in and switch on an appliance – typically a coffee machine or kettle. With power of the utmost importance in the kitchen, homeowners are constantly interacting with wiring accessories. Easy access is needed in this area of the home so they’re always on show; therefore, it’s important to select a style and finish that complements the overall décor. The market place is packed with a wide range of design styles and finishes, from contemporary through to traditional, with brochures available to illustrate the options and make the selection process easier. From our vast collection, Hamilton’s Hartland and Sheer plate designs are firm favourites, with the Hartland CFX and Sheer CFX versions that have concealed fixings proving particularly popular. A contemporary look is achieved with these styles in chrome or stainless steel, while bronze finishes are currently on-trend in high-end hotels. Other available plate finishes include coloured plastic, glass, and a wood finish, providing plenty of choice to suit every taste and budget. Alternatively, the traditional heavy-duty Metalclad range is suited for achieving a

modern industrial look within a residential property such as studio apartments, or for where hard-wearing performance is required in a workshop or industrial premises.

Be bold, or blend With an impactful interior scheme, homeowners may want their wiring accessories to blend in and avoid detracting attention from the design. Transparent plastic solutions, such as the Perception CFX, allow a wallpaper design to show through the plate with as little interruption as possible. Alternatively, Hamilton has developed its latest Paintables range that can be supplied pre-sprayed to exactly match – or even contrast – any wall colour or design theme. This flexible accessory can blend in or stand out and is set to trend. The Paintables range comes in Hartland CFX and Sheer CFX designs, but bespoke plates and sockets can also be developed with this finish for a completely unique solution. Despite the wide range of finishes on the market, white switches and sockets may be preferred or better aligned with the available budget. But even these can be stylish. Gone are the days when affordable wiring accessories were cheap-looking and ugly: Hamilton’s Vogue range provides a neatly styled solution with moulded bevelled edges in cool-white plastic, available in a range of functionality options that won’t break the bank.

24/7 connectivity Function is as important as form, and homeowners don’t need to compromise on style or coordination when selecting Hamilton solutions. Now, created for today’s always-connected lifestyle, socket

plates with USB charging functionality are available. Hamilton Litestat supplies single and double USB charging ports, with its latest dual 2.4A USB double switched socket plate allowing two tablets or other higher-rated smart devices to be charged simultaneously from a single plate. These are available in a range of styles, with a 2.1A/1A option available in stylish white plastic from the Vogue collection and the industrial Metalclad design.

Getting on the grid With so many electrical appliances in the kitchen, grid-fixed wiring allows complete flexibility for creating bespoke combinations of switches on one front plate. Separate modules can be simply clipped together on-site for an instant solution to suit any kitchen requirement and layout. It’s a common misconception that this solution just comes in bogstandard white: Hamilton offers its GridIt range in an array of styles and finishes that can be coordinated with all the other wiring accessories in the room or throughout the home. The switches can be selected to feature the written name of the appliance or a representative icon. But if white is your colour, then don’t forget to check out Hamilton’s Vogue Micro Grid range.

The finishing touch Lighting can have a huge effect on the look and feel of a space and if it’s within budget, then smart lighting control adds an extra element of functionality and luxury to a home and can be supplied with switches and control panels that coordinate with other electrical accessories. However, simple dimmer functionality can help create ambience and a more suitable environment for entertaining and relaxing on a budget. Hamilton’s coordinated LEDIT-B100 and Grid100LED rotary dimmer options provide this functionality simply, while ensuring a seamless coordinated look throughout the home. GREENBROOK

CURRENT AFFAIRS Greenbrook talks us through Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and the new 18th Edition – what advice can you give your customers?

R

esidual Current Devices (RCDs) are electrical devices which, when incorporated into an electrical installation, will provide the highest degree of protection against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by electrical earth faults. PowerBreaker was the first to create the RCD back in 1975. The 17th Edition of Building Regulations recommends the use of RCDs for sockets, as well as for inside consumer units. The new 18th Edition recommends that RCDs be used for all public spaces and for retrofitting sockets that are not already RCD protected. Despite this recommendation, there are still approximately 13M dwellings in the UK that have no RCD protection at all. Approximately 10% of all fires are caused by electrical faults, and many of these could be prevented by using RCDs.

Understanding RCDs RCDs are available in different variants, namely passive or active, and can be used for different applications. Many people are unaware of the differences between these two products and do not understand where best to use what. For passive RCDs, a typical application would be a refrigerator or freezer that would return to its regular mode of operation as soon as the power supply resumes normal operation. Passive RCDs are also useful for sockets in hard to reach places where having to gain access to reset an RCD would

6 | June 2018

Greenbrook.indd 6

be tricky, however where protection is still required. An active RCD is better used for electrical equipment such as hedge trimmers, machinery or power tools, where unexpected restarting of the equipment could present a danger to the user in a power cut situation.

Super sensitive RCDs You will also see PowerBreaker offer both a 30mA RCD as standard, plus a 10mA option. PowerBreaker 10mA RCDs are the latest products to hit the market and are super sensitive products. These RCDs trip earlier, as they are more sensitive to a fault current flowing, breaking the circuit before the trip occurs further upstream in the consumer unit – often then cutting out other faultless items. These RCDs have been deemed safer for use in areas with young children, such as nurseries and schools, but also for use in places with more vulnerable people, like hospitals or old people’s homes, where a chance of electric shock could be fatal. As detailed earlier – the 18th Edition now deems that all public access areas be advised to use RCDs (we would suggest 10mA) as all types of people can pass through these areas.

So, we see that the degree of risk depends not only on current and time, but if the victim is a child or a person in poor health, the effects can be more serious so the need for RCD protection is even greater. PowerBreaker 10mA RCDs are super sensitive and are ideal for use in hospitals and nurseries or areas where you would find vulnerable people. The PowerBreaker 30mA RCDs trip at least 10 milliseconds faster than the BSEN standards require. PowerBreaker socket RCDs also offer MFBL (make first break last) technology, which is critical to avoid upstream RCD nuisance tripping at the consumer unit. PowerBreaker is available in all good wholesalers. PowerBreaker, powerbreaker.co.uk

DETA ELECTRICAL

RELATIONSHIP GOALS Andrew Pegrum, technical manager at Deta Electrical, explains why the company has built a reputation as a company that can be relied on.

T

he UK electrical accessories market continues to evolve; from continuous advances in LED technology to the rapid rise in home automation, it is proving increasingly difficult to keep up-to-date with new and emerging technologies as well as regulations. There is an ever-growing range of wiring accessories available in the market, and crucially more so than ever, end-users, electrical contractors and wholesalers require a brand they can rely upon. When it comes to specifying electrical accessories, it can be a minefield. Contractors seek products that meet the application requirements and are quick, reliable and cost-effective to install. Continual cost pressures, tight deadlines and a competitive market place aside, the importance of specifying high-quality wiring accessories that are compatible with the latest technologies they are connected to (e.g. LED, smart devices) should not be underestimated or compromised.

Performance is paramount Product safety is paramount and whilst a cost saving can easily be achieved at the outset of the purchase, a reduction in cost will often result in a reduction in quality, specification, product warranty and support. Contractors and electrical wholesalers should have confidence that the products they are installing deliver a long-term performance in-line with expectations and product quality standards, because neither end-users nor installers should have to compromise. Standards are rightly increasing and this should be embraced by responsible manufacturers to lead the way in demanding high-quality, performance and compliance from all their products. The long-term cost of substituting products that offer these key attributes for low-cost, fit-for-purpose products can more often than not turn out to be significantly more for the contractor and wholesaler, damaging trading relationships which have taken years to grow and build. Partnering with a reputable, high-quality brand gives contractors and wholesalers the security of knowing products are fully compliant and rigorously tested;

MK ELECTRIC

OVERCOMING THE COMPETITION The housebuilding market is becoming increasingly competitive, which means developers have to do more to differentiate their development and attract buyers. Emma Segelov, head of marketing at MK Electric, looks at how electrical contractors can recommend extras that contribute towards a compelling offer for the buyer, while offering a hassle-free installation.

T

he government is currently on track to reach its target of building one million homes by 2020, but the sheer volume of properties flooding the market means there is a pressure on developers to make their properties stand out and offer something a little bit different. One of the ways housebuilders are currently choosing to do this is through the décor they offer. Today’s homebuyers are more aware of design than ever before, with 70% of millennials, the generation now typically buying their first home, stating that the way in which they decorate their property is important to them. For housebuilders, then, the opportunity exists to reap the rewards by creating a more personalised interior for their customers – and contractors can help by ensuring the wiring devices recommended on-site feed into that aesthetic. For many developments, it is no longer good enough to simply suggest white plastic solutions – developers are often after a more creative solution instead.

Perfect finish To meet this demand, there has been a proliferation of wiring devices coming in a range of colours and material finishes, from ultra-modern colour schemes such as matte black – a hue that was incredibly popular last year and is only expected to gain popularity in 2018 – to more ever popular finishes like stainless steel. In addition to this, a screwless aesthetic has become a highly sought-after option. Young homebuyers are used to having seemingly unlimited choice when it comes to the look and feel of their property, and as such housebuilders are seeking to give them a more tailored experience. This can provide a great boost for revenue, especially when you consider that young Brits spend more on homeware than they do on traditionally popular purchases among their age group, such as fashion.

12 | June 2018

MK.indd 12

Another dimension

The new Dimensions range boasts a screwless design and interchangable front plates

Fortunately for newbuild developments, the option now exists to invest in switches and sockets that offer a more personalised finish, while having some great benefits for contractors, too.

Two-part installation At the centre of these products is the concept of a two-part installation solution, which means that contractors can install the functional module during the build phase, before adding the final frontplate later, perhaps even just before the property is handed over to the client. There are multiple benefits to completing the job in this way, not least because the contractor can avoid loss and damage such as knocks and scrapes to frontplates that have been installed onsite – something which can require costly replacements and lengthen the amount of time a contractor is required on-site. For the client, the option exists to select the finish at the later stages of a project, which means they can ensure it matches any late design changes and that it feeds into the overall aesthetic of the build. For the same reason, these products are also becoming popular in hotels, commercial offices and student accommodation.

To meet this demand, MK Electric has launched MK Dimensions, a range of modern, screwless wiring devices available in nine different finishes – including the latest addition to the line-up, matte black. Because the product is a two-piece solution made up of a functional module and clip-on, tool-removable frontplate, MK Dimensions is quick and easy to install and enables the flexibility to change the design aesthetic to match with future changes to décor. The two parts are supplied under two separate order numbers, which means they can be delivered on-site separately in line with a contractor’s build schedule, reducing the chance of damage on-site and ensuring that any final changes to the frontplate can be made without any additional cost being incurred. Vitally, MK Dimensions is compliant with British Standards before the final frontplate has been fitted, which means that contractors can use the product during the build phase of a project, without the danger of it receiving knocks and scrapes. This is achieved by the use of a recyclable cover plate which protects the functional module before the frontplate is fitted. MK Dimensions also helps the busy installer by incorporating time-saving features such as backed out and captive screws, and in-line and upward facing funnel entrance to terminals. When combined, these features can save installers around 15 seconds per double socket outlet installation, which can amount to a considerable time and labour saving on larger installations. The little things really do count when it comes to new homes, and potential buyers are becoming increasingly selective when it comes to the way their homes look and feel. By recommending a dynamic, visuallyappealing product contractors can ensure they are offering the perfect solution for selective clients, while making life very much easier for themselves too. SCOLMORE

THE VALUE OF A BRAND With an influx of budget products from hitherto unknown names hitting the UK electrical accessories market, Marie Parry, group marketing director at Scolmore, outlines the value of investing in a trusted brand.

A

ccording to AMA Research, the UK wiring accessories market is expected to be worth £1.8bn by the end of 2018, while the market for home automation products, including intelligent wiring accessories, is described as a rapidly growing market that has benefitted from the spread of wireless and app-based technologies, and is forecast to nearly double in value by 2021. The opportunities that this growth and expansion promises can be evidenced in the influx of products onto the market in recent years, from unknown names from outside the market. As a sector, we are only too familiar with the pressures of tight margins and the need to complete projects on time, to shorter programmes and within restricted budgets. Within these constraints, the appeal of a lowerpriced product may make sense in the short term, but can contractors afford to put themselves in a position where a product may fail to meet the requirements for which it has been specified, resulting in time lost, delays on-site and additional expenditure on labour? The growth in online sales of electrical products is also having an impact. The market for online distribution of electrical products was estimated to be worth £1.3bn in 2017 according to a report by AMA Research, having grown by almost 300% since 2012. Whilst the largest distribution channels for the sales of electrical products are direct from manufacturers and via electrical wholesalers, in terms of online

sales, the most significant distributors are ‘internet only’ distributors, with around 42% of the market. One of the key drivers for growth of the online channel in recent years has been the widening of product ranges by large internet retailers (such as Amazon and eBay), where access to lesser-known brands is more likely.

Partnership benefits Working with a reputable brand will allow access to an unrivalled range of products, services, facilities and expertise, helping customers keep upto-date with the very latest products, technologies and regulation changes. A dedicated technical support team and customer service department will be trained to provide the right level of support whether it is product-related or more general advice seeking. Such is the pace of development in this industry – with more smart systems becoming available – it can prove difficult to keep up with the raft of new products and solutions that are coming on board. It is a manufacturer’s responsibility to provide customers with the opportunity to be educated on how these new products work. As a group, we have always put great emphasis on the importance of training and development as part of our service to customers. Having invested time and money to harness the latest technologies to develop cutting-edge products, we

want to ensure that our customers are given every opportunity to understand how the products work, and how they can be utilised to best advantage on a project. We offer a range of training opportunities designed to keep customers up-to-date with the latest products, technologies and legislation, including a course aimed at contractors and wholesalers looking to expand their knowledge of home automation. With contractors under increasing pressure to complete projects within tight deadlines and budgets, it is more important than ever that they have the security of knowing the brands they are working with are rigorously tested, fully compliant, will help deliver faster installation, and are backed up with reliable customer support service.

Investing in the future As a leading player in the electrical accessories market, Scolmore cares about the future of the industry and invests a significant amount of time and money to help support and promote the industry through a range of measures including sponsorship, event organisation and attendance. Our support for the NICEIC and ELECSA National Apprentice of the Year competition – now in its third year and going from strength to strength – demonstrates a commitment to help secure the future of the industry by educating and developing the next generation of electricians. USBEAUTIFUL

SOCKET SAVIOUR With the increase of smart devices demanding the use of more and more sockets in the home to charge, BG Electrical gives us three things to love about its new range of USB sockets, which free up much-needed power sockets.

W

ith the UK population now using an average of four connected devices each, according to Ofcom, it means the charging of devices can turn the family home into a battleground. Peace and harmony can now be achieved thanks to USBeautiful sockets from BG Electrical, where USB charging ports are seamlessly incorporated into easy-to-replace wall sockets.

Here are three reasons to love USBeautiful:

“Peace and harmony can now be achieved thanks to USBeautiful sockets from BG Electrical.”

1

There are options for two, three or four USB ports depending on how gadget-crazy your family is. The four port option is perfect for areas which will have multiple devices, for example in the heart of the home, the kitchen.

2

Once fully charged, USBeautiful’s standby mode will kick in, which saves on electicity bills. Smart technology built into the socket recognises the type of device that is charging and adjusts the power accordingly.

3

USBeautiful is easy to install or replace, simply remove the old socket – no need to adjust the wallmounting box. USBeautiful also comes with colour-coded terminals for quick and easy installation.

With our beautiful new range of USB wiring devices, available in ten stunning finishes in five unique ranges – there’s a product to complement any interior. Our USB sockets offer overload protection, and are ASTA approved. The USBeautiful range is available at retail outlets, including B&Q, Screwfix, Wilko, Argos and Homebase, or your local electrical wholesaler. USBeautiful, usbeautiful.co.uk

BG ELECTRICAL

GOOD SPORT BG Electrical’s Wi-Fi range extender sockets offer a strong internet connection in all parts of the home, including where connection is usually patchy – meaning no more fights about what to watch on the TV.

W

ith the summer of sport likely to divide TV-watching families, keeping up with all the action on phones and tablets will be essential for many of us. However, slow or patchy Wi-Fi coverage around the home can be frustrating – and with the World Cup and Wimbledon likely to see multiple devices being used at the same time, the need for uninterrupted WiFi has never been more important. BG Electrical has launched Wi-Fi range extender wall sockets – which will help boost Wi-Fi into those hard to reach places in the home – up to 30m. Positioning the Wi-Fi socket halfway between the router and the area of poor reception, the range extender will relay the signal to further spread coverage.

Here are five reasons to fit these ahead of the summer:

1

5

Range extenders take existing internet wireless signals and rebroadcast them to areas of the home where the Wi-Fi signal is weak or even non-existent. They work with all wireless broadband routers meaning nothing has to be replaced in order to improve connectivity.

3

They’re easy to install and can replace your existing sockets without changing the wall-mounted box. Setup is done by one-touch of the WPS button.

Range extenders are suitable for all devices: computers, tablets, mobile phones, games consoles, TVs – perfect for a gadget-crazy family. No additional plug-in adapters are needed – keep sockets free for other devices.

The BG Electrical Wi-Fi socket range extender is available from many retail outlets, including Screwfix, Argos, B&Q, Wickes and Tool Station, or local electrical wholesaler. BG Electrical, bgelectrical.uk/wifi-sockets
