INDUSTRY NEWS THE MOST LISTENED TO SONGS BY UK ELECTRICIANS REVEALED IronmongeryDirect has analysed thousands of Spotify playlists containing trade-related words in their titles, such as ‘tradesperson’, ‘plumber’ and ‘building site’, to identify the songs which appear the most frequently. Australian rockers AC/DC are the most popular artist and feature in trade playlists more than twice as often as any other singer or band. Three of the band’s hits feature in the top 10 tradey tunes, with Highway to Hell and Thunderstruck joining Back to Black on the list. Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 single Dreams, from their best-selling album Rumours, is the second most listened to track, ahead of Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood. The top 10 most listened to songs by UK tradespeople are: 1) Back in Black – AC/DC 2) Dreams – Fleetwood Mac 3) Sweater Weather – The Neighbourhood 4) Africa – TOTO 5) Highway to Hell – AC/DC 6) Thunderstruck – AC/DC 7) PTT (Paint The Town) – LOONA 8) Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People 9) The Less I Know The Better – Tame Impala 10) good 4 u – Olivia Rodrigo
Many of these songs appear in playlists across the industry, but it seems that each trade has its own taste in music. The most popular song for electricians is Closer by The Chainsmokers. Dominick Sandford, Director and Head of Merchandising & Marketing at IronmongeryDirect, says: “Music is a
massive part of day-to-day life for tradespeople, whether they’re working on a construction site or in someone’s home, and it’s great to see that they have such varied taste!” IronmongeryDirect, ironmongerydirect.co.uk
ALFIE’S ARMY COMPLETES CHALLENGE TO RAISE MONEY FOR YOUNG LIVES VS CANCER A team of 13, including National Ventilation’s Andy Bills, has hiked 53km through the Peak District to raise money for the Young Lives vs Cancer charity. The Peak District Challenge is an event which welcomes 2,500 adventurers to test themselves with a range of options from 25km to 100km. Starting and finishing in Bakewell, the team took on the challenge to give something back to the charity that has been supporting Andy’s son, Alfie, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at just three. All three of the 13 crossed the line, including Andy, who finished the challenge in 12hrs 20mins, burning 5,000 calories. Alfie’s Army has raised an impressive £11,123. However, with charities hard hit during COVID and Young Lives vs Cancer offering families such vital support, the team would welcome further donations. Young Lives vs Cancer is a cancer charity for children and is funded by donations. The charity helps families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. Every day, 12 more children hear the devastating news that they have cancer. National Ventilation, nationalventilation.co.uk
MEETING NET ZERO TARGETS – AN INSTALLER’S PERSPECTIVE
EMPLOYERS WHO ‘STEPPED UP’ DURING CRISIS PRAISED BY SECTT AND SJIB The Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) and Scottish Joint Industry Board have saluted Scotland’s employers after a record number of apprentices were welcomed into the electrical sector. A total of 738 new entrants to the industry were recruited in 2021, confounding fears that recruitment could be a casualty of the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. SECTT says the new cohort exceeded all expectations, being 50% up on 2020 and more than the 700 which would be closer to a normal year’s intake. It praised employers for their positive attitude in such circumstances and said that the figures suggested the attractiveness of the industry. Anne Galbraith, CEO of SECTT, says: “This really has been a remarkable year. We took on 500 apprentices in 2020 and we are taking on a further 738 starting in the autumn of 2021. In a normal year, I would expect to take approximately 700 new starts, so this year has exceeded expectations and we are still only in July. “In addition, nearly all colleges are full and SECTT is now exploring further opportunities for next year. “We would like to thank all employers who have stepped up and taken on an apprentice this year. As the Scottish Government targets for transition to zero carbon move closer, it shows a real commitment and a recognition that we need to train the electricians of the future now.” The news comes after the new top team at SECTT recently highlighted the importance of electrical apprenticeships. SECTT, sectt.org.uk
David Cowburn, Chief Executive Officer at NAPIT, has reflected on the progress made by the electrical industry to enhance electrical safety over the past decade and considers the issues which remain unresolved. In recent months he has met with senior politicians which provided the opportunity to discuss with cabinet ministers the need for government and industry to work together to meet carbon reduction ambitions. What has been clear throughout the discussions is that there is a recognition that future energy and carbon targets cannot be met without both carrot (grants, loans, subsidies) and stick (legislation). It would be easy to look at the cancellation of the Green Home Grants Voucher Scheme and see only failure, but we need to consider why it failed and what lessons can be learned, he said. On the regulatory side, the Future Homes Standard will set out energy efficiency standards to ensure that new homes built will be ‘net zero ready’. This represents a clearer indicator of government commitment than funding mechanisms. Simplifying the training and certification entry route for installers is key to creating a robust, competent workforce. Whilst improving standards and protecting customers must remain the cornerstones of government policy, consideration must also be given to the impact on installers of the cost and complexity of complying with requirements, he said. INDUSTRY NEWS COWBOY CUSTOMERS LEAVE TRADESPEOPLE £1.7BN OUT OF POCKET New research from Powered Now has found that, at a time when the backlog for tradespeople to commence work on home improvements is on average three months, builders are being swindled out of vast sums. Whether it be creating fake appointments with tradespeople to get out of rental agreements or as a threat to a landlord to receive a deposit back in full, seldom is it the case that the tradesperson who is losing money through bogus appointments is considered. What’s more, it appears that many Brits have actively withheld payment from their tradespeople to attempt to negotiate a lower price, or lodged false complaints with threats of bad reviews, simply to receive a discount. Key statistics: • Over five million (5,038,000) Brits have requested a quote for a project from a tradesperson when they know they will not choose them • Over two million (2,496,000) Brits have forgotten about an appointment and been out when the tradesperson has arrived at the agreed time • Over one million (1,282,000) Brits have unfairly criticised work done during a home improvement project in order to receive a discount • 1,743,000 Brits have delayed payment to a tradesperson in order to try to negotiate a lower price With so many people agreeing to use the time of tradespeople for services they know will not be ultimately required, Powered Now estimates that between £776m to £1.75bn of revenue for the UK’s trades has been frittered away, purely through bogus quotes. CRAWLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL JOINS WITH CITYFIBRE The rollout of a town-wide Full Fibre network in Crawley has taken a major step forward, thanks to a new agreement between CityFibre and Crawley Borough Council. People living in over 9,000 homes managed by Crawley Borough Council will be among the first to connect to Crawley’s new town-wide Full Fibre network. This is thanks to the signing of a blanket wayleave agreement, which gives CityFibre permission to connect all Crawley Borough Council properties to the new network it is building across the town. CityFibre is investing £23m to bring the fastest, most reliable digital connectivity to Crawley and has made swift progress on the town-wide rollout. This new partnership will ensure the project can continue to go ahead smoothly and reach social housing sites as well as other homes and businesses in the area. Full Fibre networks are recognised as the digital infrastructure of the future for both homes and businesses. With near unlimited bandwidth, Full Fibre will ensure households can utilise the latest smart home technology, stream entertainment across multiple devices and make it easier to work from home, with virtually no buffering or lagging. JIB INCREASES NUMBER OF COURSES ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING The JIB Skills Development Fund has increased the number of courses eligible for funding, following a record year of course grants. The Fund distributed £30,000 in course grants in the last funding year and has set about helping even more people with a renewed focus on low carbon technologies. The charity provides financial assistance for skills development and career progression, helping apprentices undertake additional training alongside their studies, those employed by JIB member companies and those who are unemployed and in need of financial assistance to re-enter the workforce. This year, eligibility has been extended to additional occupations for qualified electricians in areas such as solar photovoltaics, electric vehicle charging and heat pump installation and maintenance. Richard Clarke, Chair of the charity trustees board, said: “Last year saw more applications than ever before. Design and Verification was particularly popular as part of career progression to Technician grading. We are delighted that the Skills Development Fund continues to provide valuable financial help to people in the industry in areas where we are expecting to see the greatest demand for new skills and training. Ensuring the workforce is suitably qualified and competent raises the bar on standards, prevents a race to the bottom, and we are happy to continue supporting the industry in these crucial sectors.” JIB, jib.org.uk

The ECA is urging its members, as well as the wider industry, to continue to exercise caution and plan as far ahead as possible on projects involving cable management systems (CMS). This comes after manufacturers’ body BEAMA recently warned that long lead times for CMS supplies are expected to continue into Q1 of 2022, coupled with increasing raw material costs. Factors cited to be behind the ongoing supply problems include shipping and shortages of timber and cardboard, which are affecting packaging. ECA CEO Steve Bratt comments: “Extra care should be taken when planning projects, and with project costings. For many, ongoing delays in the availability of some cable management system materials will continue to have a negative impact on cost and completion time. “With this in mind, our advice to the industry is to order your CMS materials in good time to ensure you can finish as planned. ECA will keep members informed as the situation develops.” ECA recently held an exclusive webinar with the Electrical Distributors Association (EDA) and BEAMA examining the impact of the materials shortage on the electrical sector. INDUSTRY NEWS LONDON REVEALED TO BE THE BEST CITY IN THE UK FOR TRADESPEOPLE With the inevitable rise of Britons looking to renovate or ‘fix up’ their home, Google search volumes show a huge 138,700 people per month searching for plumbers and electricians to repair and renovate their homes. Over 50,000 of these searches came from people located in the capital, suggesting London is the best place to work as a plumber or electrician, due to the city’s number of call out opportunities. According to findings by alldayPA, London has been revealed to be the number one city for tradespeople to work across the UK. In second place was Birmingham (20,350 searches per month), followed by Glasgow (15,400), Bristol (14,050) and Edinburgh (13,600). The data experts found that these locations give tradespeople the opportunity to earn well over an average salary each year. Through these findings, alldayPA has pinpointed which locations plumbers and electricians would benefit from relocating to if they want to expand their business or want to increase their salaries. The average UK tradesperson could earn an average annual salary of between £27,572 and £40,671, simply based on their location. alldayPA, alldaypa.co.uk
CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY UP £334M SINCE PRE-PANDEMIC New research highlights that the construction industry grew 6% in early spring 2021, meaning that new work and repair and maintenance is £334m above pre-pandemic levels. The research, conducted by specialist on-site storage company SiteStak, looked at the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics, alongside UK Government data, to discover the latest trends in building and construction. In line with the growth, orders surged by over £1.2m in Q1 of 2021 compared to Q4 of 2020. This represents 12.2%, which also supports an increase in sales of SiteStak’s storage management system which is up around 45%. Of all UK new builds, 79% represent housing, which is the highest figure since 2000. Of this number, London is also seeing an 11% increase in housing builds since 2019. Further investigation into search data not only backs this figure but is encouraging for the industry, with the term ‘new build’ seeing increased interest over the last two years and searches for ‘new builds near me’ more than doubling between April 2020 and April 2021 (14,800 vs 33,100). Although house builds are massively on the up, new infrastructure is leading the way across the construction industry as we’ve entered 2021, with high-grossing projects such as Euston HS2, HS2 Northolt Tunnels and HS2 Chiltern and Colne Valley all ones to watch this year. JOHN WRIGHT ELECTRICAL ILLUMINATES CONISBROUGH CASTLE
ECO UK GROUP INSTALLS M&E PACKAGE AT HEATHROW AIRPORT’S EXPRESS CENTRE
John Wright Electrical and Mechanical Services was recently involved in the Conisbrough Castle Illumination project – a project with Doncaster Council and English Heritage to light up Conisbrough Castle. The Castle is a 12th Century Norman castle, now a picturesque ruin for people to visit. It was given by William the Conqueror to William de Warenne as part of the lordship that was bestowed upon him. The project was an external lighting scheme that showcases the beauty of the structure, even when the rest of the world is bathed in darkness. This is the first time that this has been done in 25 years. Using an LED lighting system, the site was bathed in light from dusk until dawn, and will continue to be so from now onwards.
Eco UK Group was recently awarded a contract to collaborate on a project at the UK’s only Express Centre based at Heathrow Airport. This project involved the relocation of the Express Centre to a neighbouring building at Heathrow Airport. Work included the provision and installation of state-of-the-art wall mounted commercial air conditioning units, reconfiguration of the existing ventilation and mechanical pipework services (HVAC). The company was also responsible for the provision of power supplies to a vast amount of the facility areas and business critical equipment, such as display screens, drivers’ kiosks, weigh scales, metal detectors and turnstiles, X-ray machines, a baggage conveyor system, caster deck and lifts and overdoor heaters. The company also installed energy efficient LEDs into the Express Centre to replace the existing inefficient fittings in order to deliver the desired lux levels throughout the facility. It included the provision of both external LED linear lighting and replacement LED floodlights above the dock doors. Internally, the team supplied and installed a selection of industrial and office smart lighting solutions such as LED high bay warehouse lighting, LED panel lights and LED linear batten light fittings. Most of the lighting is controlled via PIR sensor technology and local key switch control for the emergency lighting.

TRAINING
CULTURE IS KEY — ENSURING THE RIGHT FIT WHEN GROWING YOUR TEAM Expanding your electrical team is incredibly exciting – it means bringing fresh talent into your business and growing your capacity. However, ensuring your new hire is the right cultural fit for your business is key. Mick Fitzgerald, director, Options Skills, explains the importance of cultural fit when growing your team and shares his tips for getting it right.
I
n every business, culture is key. It sets the precedent for the way you work, and, with 90% of UK employers saying candidates need to have the right cultural fit, it’s clear it should be a key part of the recruitment process too. Your new recruits need to integrate well into your existing culture to help your business continue to grow. Have you ever hired someone who had the right experience and training, but eventually found that something wasn’t quite right? Although 87% of employers offer inductions for new team members on business culture, occasionally the team member simply isn’t aligned with it. In small electrical teams, culture is key because employees often work closely together on a daily basis. Your team needs to get on well, so they can do their job properly, as this enables open communication and successful teamwork – key components for any electrical project. Your culture also impacts your service to customers, which needs to be consistent, no matter which team member is doing the work.
Hiring for cultural fit

18 | August 2021
Training – Option Skills.indd 18
Hiring for cultural fit is about bringing people into the team who will fit in well with your current culture and adopt your core values and overall behaviours that give your business its own personality. It’s not about hiring people who are identical to one another – it means expanding your team with people who can bring a positive influence and something new to compliment your already established team.
For example, if your current team is made up of young people, and you’re interviewing an older candidate who is returning to work after retraining in electrics, you may think they will struggle to fit into your current culture. However, this candidate may be able to bring lots of knowledge and general life and work experience, which could make a significant difference to your business. Just because a candidate doesn’t ‘look’ like other members of the team, doesn’t mean they won’t fit in with your culture.
Key characteristics to look out for Every electrical business’ culture is different, so the strategy behind hiring for cultural fit varies. However, there are some key characteristics to look out for to see if someone is the right fit for your growing business: • Investment in growth – is the candidate taking clear steps to develop on their career path? Perhaps they have recently completed further electrical training, or maybe they have recently retrained as an electrician through a traineeship and funded their own training. Ask the candidate about how they see their career progressing, and what they are doing to reach their goals. This will help you to determine whether they’re motivated and committed to personal growth. • Willingness to learn – are they eager to develop existing skills and learn new ones? You could ask the candidate about the kind of training and support they may value if you were to hire them. If they show interest in building their skillset, they are likely to make a committed team member. This is particularly important as electrical guidelines and standards continue to evolve.
• Interest in the trade – does the candidate see the job as simply a way earn money, or are they genuinely enthusiastic about electrics? Ask them why they are interested in electrics, and why they chose to take this particular career path. • Understanding of your current culture – share your current culture with your candidates and give them the opportunity to show an understanding of this, perhaps by asking them to share stories of times they have embodied a particular value.
Your new recruits need to integrate well into your existing culture to help your business continue to grow
Experience vs willingness When hiring, try to look beyond experience alone. A lack of experience doesn’t equal a lack of willingness to learn, or inability to fit in with your business culture. For example, imagine you’re choosing between Candidate A and Candidate B, and your culture is all about collaborative working. Candidate A has plenty of experience, but enjoys working alone. Candidate B has only just finished their initial centre-led training and is working towards achieving their NVQ Level 3 Electrical Training qualification, but is very willing to learn and enjoys team working. In this situation, Candidate B is likely the best option for your business, as they will easily fit into the culture of teamworking, and they are showing clear commitment to learn and grow by investing in their own electrical training. Fundamentally, previous experience is a crucial part of the hiring process, but eagerness to learn and the right cultural fit shouldn’t be overlooked, as these will often prove to be more valuable in the long-term. KEY ISSUE
BUILDING STRONG CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS: THE KEY TO BUSINESS GROWTH FOR CONTRACTORS Electrical contractors perform a wide variety of tasks. Yet, their businesses face remarkably similar challenges. To achieve long-term business growth, contractors must overcome these challenges and meet the needs of the modern customer. The key? Bring unique expertise and personal experience to every job, says Harry Cadman, Channel Marketing Manager at Schneider Electric.
T
Embrace digital
o grow, contractors need to move past the traditional ‘install and go’ model. By building a long-term client relationship, projects can be monetised throughout their lifecycle, past the initial installation. Contractors can strengthen these connections by delivering value-added expertise. This will be prized by clients in an uncertain future. Recent events have taught that change is unavoidable. Embracing change, and building a mutually beneficial, trusted relationship with clients is essential. This personal approach boosts competitiveness, gains recurring revenue and achieves long-term growth. Technological advancement is changing the industry at a breakneck pace. Over the next decade, this is only set to continue.
Growing from adversity A challenging business environment can be an incubator for new opportunities. Evolving technology and shifting market conditions have put the construction industry under pressure to adapt. This presents new opportunities, as well as formidable challenges for many in the business. To stay competitive, electrical contractors need to be seen as more than an ‘installer’. A more compelling and profitable offer profile can be developed in two ways. Either, by broadening your offerings or concentrating on specialised services. Contractors should also consider becoming experts in the upstream and downstream stages of the project lifecycle. New revenue streams can be secured through design and engineering, prefabrication, maintenance, service contracts, or a combination of these services. Whatever the route, contractors will need the right tools to adapt to the increasingly complex industry. New products, technologies, and services require time consuming familiarisation and

even training. This makes it increasingly difficult to keep knowledge up-to-date and experience relevant. The good news? The same digital technologies disrupting the industry can also unlock game changing new opportunities. Mastering digital tools delivers benefits beyond your own productivity. It also helps professionals guide their customers down a path toward digitisation. This sets contractors up as enablers of operational efficiency, and as digital facilitators.
To stay competitive, electrical contractors need to be seen as more than an ‘installer’
electricalcontractingnews.com
Leveraging digital connectivity is key to improve competitiveness and versatility. IoT is the new frontier in equipment management and control, and as its scope expands, so too will the opportunities. Digitally literate electrical contractors will be well-positioned to take advantage of the growth. Those who embrace digitisation, especially new IoT-enabled applications, will stand out. Contractors that are willing to make the most of the online learning resources available will benefit greatly. Not only will they enhance their knowledge, elevate offerings, and enrich the value of their services. These contractors will also create end-to-end relationships, generating long-term customer loyalty. This understanding of smart digital tools will not only allow projects to be carried out more effectively. This can also boost the productivity and profitability of the entire business. This level of customer loyalty is what will assure the long-term success of any business. From streamlining administrative tasks to simplifying and speeding up system design, the tools are out there – you just have to know where to look. The problem many contractors face is not access to information, quite the opposite. The amount of information available is overwhelming. So, professionals are seeking targeted, expert intelligence to support their individual business needs. With only so many hours in the day, streamlining workflow is key. Leveraging relevant tools and educational assets is a great, time-efficient way of enhancing a contractor’s knowledge. The role of an electrical contractor is changing. And this pace of change has only accelerated over the past few years. There is now an opportunity for exponential growth. Contractors can offer value-added services with better margins and closer customer relationships. Schneider Electric, se.com

ESP OVERCOMES SECURITY ISSUES FOR REMOTE WOODLAND DWELLING ESP was selected to provide security equipment for a rural property in Dartmouth.

Project Focus – ESP.indd 22
ith its remote location, sitting on a hillside above a creek feeding the river Dart and surrounded by dense woodland, this stunning rural property in Dartmouth certainly provides a tranquil retreat. The downside of its secluded setting, however, is the difficulty acquiring signals for TV, satellite and internet connections. This means that any systems requiring internet are working over site-wide Wi-Fi/mesh networks with multiple Wi-Fi access points operating on 3 or 4G, and there is no hard-wired data connection to any of the devices. These were the challenges facing the electrical contractor when the property owners decided to update the security and door entry provision for the extensive premises. Having had a CCTV system on a previous site, the owners wanted the benefits of having the property protected but did not want the cable infrastructure that CCTV requires installed throughout the property. They were looking for a more cost-effective alternative that would provide similar or enhanced features. At the same time, the intercom system on the entrance gate was old and had become inoperable and needed repairing or replacing with a system that would offer remote/wireless control. Martyn Walley, managing director of Hide, the electrical contracting firm hired to undertake the security installation, looked to his experience working with ESP security products to provide the solutions that would overcome the client’s issues. ESP’s GuardCam Deco was recommended by Martyn to provide the general security provision covering the various areas of the property. Four of the systems have been installed to cover the garage, patio/decking area, driveway entrance and the entrance to the boat workshop.
GuardCam Deco is a combined Wi-Fi security camera and LED floodlight system, which has been designed with ease of set up as a key feature, including the option for remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet, using the specially developed ESP Smart app. GuardCam Deco has the option to deliver motion activation notifications via the app whilst recording the activation. The user-friendly app also allows recordings to be accessed. With a built-in camera that offers full 1080p HD live viewing and recording, the GuardCam Deco was the perfect all-in-one solution for these premises. On approaching the unit, GuardCam Deco detects an intruder with proven PIR technology at a distance of up to 10 metres from the unit. It floodlights the area, initiates a video recording and provides the user with an option to deliver a two-way audio message or activate the inbuilt alarm warning. It features an adjustable 16W high-intensity LED Security Lamp (3000k colour light and 800 lumen) and you can remotely dim or turn on/off the LED lamp via the app. It will record up to 200, 20-second video sessions onto the supplied 8GB storage, and this is expandable up to 64GB. The integral high-resolution digital camera offers wide angle camera view and clear image recording in video format. Night images retain colour and clarity due to the automatic LED light illumination. To address the requirements for the access control provision for visitors and deliveries to the property, Martyn recommended ESP’s Aperta Wired Wi-Fi Door Station with Record Facility as a cost-effective solution that offers flexibility and provides full access control integration to the gate automation system from anywhere that a mobile/Wi-Fi signal permits. The Aperta Wi-Fi system has been integrated fully with the existing electric gate to enable remote control of the gated access system. A Wi-Fi door station connects directly to a smart phone, offering instant front door security and convenience to users. It allows you to view and talk to visitors at your home whether you are on the premises or on the other side of the world. From a smart phone or tablet and using the free ESP app, property owners can easily see who is at the door or gate, engage in two-way communication and allow remote access if desired. 1080p live view, visitor recording, automatic motion detection, and clear two-way audio are some of the key features available via the subscription-free ESP Smart app.
Martyn recommended ESP’s Aperta Wired Wi-Fi Door Station with Record Facility
The Click Smart+ range is designed to simplify and streamline connected home products
electricalcontractingnews.com
It was during the initial site visit to assess the security requirements that Martyn identified a number of opportunities where products from other Scolmore Group companies could provide a solution. As a result, three Ovia 10W LED Pathfinder floodlights were chosen to provide ambient lighting to the bordering woodland on the Creek Valley, gently illuminating the backdrop from the raised balcony outlook. Martyn has used products from Scolmore’s Click Smart+ smart product range to do the switching of the Ovia floodlights remotely from the owner’s mobile phone. In addition, an Ovia 20W LED Pathfinder floodlight with PIR sensor is providing security lighting to the detached single garage on the approach driveway and this has replaced the original failed halogen floodlight. The Click Smart+ range is designed to simplify and streamline connected home products – lighting controls, smart sockets, security cameras and sensors. It utilises Zigbee technology – one of the most widely adopted smart home communication protocols. Zigbee certified devices require the Click Smart+ Hub and communicate with each other using a mesh network which creates multiple pathways for the connection of multiple smart home devices without compromising signal and communication range. Products from Scolmore’s Click Aquip66 weatherproof range were installed in three outside locations to bring power sources where needed. Two Aquip66 two-gang switched socket outlets are located on the remote double garage which will be used for trickle charging facilities for the boat trailer and high-powered pressure washer. Another has been installed as a direct replacement to a standard two-gang socket which had been incorrectly installed in an external location by the previous owner of the property – ensuring compliance with the latest British Standard requirements. SPECIAL FEATURE
LED LIGHTING
LED IS LIGHTING THE WAY FORWARD ECN spoke to Russell Vanstone, Product Development Manager at Knightsbridge, to get his view of where LED lighting is going and what to look out for in the future. ECN: Does LED lighting now rule the roost? RV: It would be hard to argue against the assertion that LED lighting is now the predominant lighting source for UK residential, retail and commercial applications. Industry researcher IBISWorld estimates that sales for LED products and ancillaries will reach £2.4 billion this year. That’s a lot of LED lamps flying off the shelves! While other mainstream lighting sources have fallen by the wayside, the LED world has grown and grown. There’s probably not a house, office or retail shop in the UK that doesn’t have LED lamps installed somewhere. In fact according to findings from German electrical magazine, Reichelt, 73% of UK consumers are already reaping the benefits of using LED lamps in their home, with 17% of respondents having already switched to LED lights completely. So yes, it would be safe to say that LED is king of the castle.
It would be safe to say that LED is king of the castle
ECN: Why do you think that is? RV: There are many reasons behind LED’s success – one of the most influential being the vastly improved lumen output over the last couple of years. Couple this with the ability to put LEDs into almost any kind of light fitting, making them extremely flexible and versatile, and you have the almost perfect lighting solution. Witness the growth in accent lighting, task lighting, decorative lighting, track lighting – the simple pendant hanging from the ceiling just doesn’t cut it anymore! Architects, interior designers, even the homeowner, have all latched on to the transformative effect LED schemes

can have when positioned and installed correctly. The colour rendering, the efficacy, the energy-saving nature, all contribute to the increasing adoption of LEDs across home, business and retail. ECN: So, what next for LEDs? RV: I think that one of the challenges is bringing greater utility to LED lighting products. By that I mean increasing a product’s functionality, its ease of installation, even its economy of stocking for wholesalers, that’s to say a ‘one product, numerous solutions’ approach that allows inventory to be kept to the minimum, while offering the buyer a product that meets a variety of needs. For instance, let’s take an LED downlight. Currently, an installer will invariably choose a product that offers a fixed performance in terms of watts, lumens, colour render and, once installed, that’s it. The scope for changing how that installation works is limited to removing the downlighter and installing another one with different performance characteristics. That’s just more time and cost. Now imagine a scenario where the installer could effectively ‘dial in’ the characteristics from wattage (lumen output) to CCT prior to the installation and then change it at a later date, should the need arise. Make the connector system one that can be plugged in or unplugged very easily to facilitate removal of the unit and you now have a downlighter that really adds value. Now the next challenge is to maximise the installation opportunity for your ‘next generation’ downlight by making it super compliant, whatever the situation or application. Make it Fire Rated for solid timber, web joist or I-joist configurations

and then throw in an IP65 rating so it can sit happily in bathrooms, wet rooms or wherever moisture is prevalent. You can begin to see the huge benefits of such a product. Then the finishing touch would be to offer different style bezels to suit the colourway of the room or installation in question. Again, these could be changed at a later date to suit any refurbishment or redecoration. It really is lighting the way you want it. ECN: So, is that that something the trade can look forward to soon? RV: Yes, indeed it is. Our own take on this is called the Spektro LED, which is something we are very excited about. It addresses the points I have mentioned previously, and we believe that installers, and homeowners, will reap the benefits offered by this new, exciting LED downlight. OFF TO A FLYING START The AX’s doors and mounting plates are simply added to the delivery package and are quick to machine using the Rittal Perforex BC
Meurer-etechnik is looking to the new AX compact enclosure from Rittal to improve its production efficiency. How does the new model differ from its predecessor, the AE? A day spent with enclosure production staff reveals all.
A
new working day dawns at Murer-etechnik in Germany’s Westerwald region. In the incoming goods section, a young man wearing a black T-shirt with the company logo on the front and the sleeve is taking delivery of a
pallet with eight AX compact enclosures from Rittal. Production Manager, Steven Lauer, is already waiting for their arrival. In just a week’s time, the UL-compliant enclosures are set to be delivered to a special-purpose machinery manufacturer based in the Cologne area. Steven can’t wait to see how the new AX enclosures differ from the predecessor model, the AE.
Let’s get started,” he says. Steven has assigned the task of fitting out the AX enclosures to three of the plant electricians. One of them is already clamping the first enclosure door into the Perforex CNC machining centre. The mounting plates are next. Progress is rapid, because the doors and mounting plates are simply added to the delivery package

UPS & POWER MANAGEMENT and staff don’t have the hassle of first detaching them from the enclosure, as is normally the case. Using the digital twin’s manufacturing data from Eplan Pro Panel, the machine cuts all the necessary holes in double-quick time. “That part is the most fun,” says Steven, who is standing casually at the machine’s operator terminal. “There are hardly any questions to deal with and you can see the results straight away,” he adds. It’s now time for pre-assembly, configuration and wiring. A fully automatic wire processing machine has already produced the necessary cable harnesses – also using data from the design engineering department. In this way, Meurer-etechnik is gradually implementing ‘enclosure manufacturing 4.0’. Steven indicates an area in the rear part of the light-filled factory building to three members of staff, who lift the compact enclosures onto small metal trestles. Next to each of the plant electricians is a trolley with tools and a number of boxes containing electronic components. The enclosures are now lying on their backs with the doors fitted. Beside them are the mounting plates, to which the men next attach the mounting rails and cable ducts. Contactors, terminals, inverters and similar components are then installed. During this configuration process, the electricians regularly consult their tablets to compare their work with the 3D model. Next comes the wiring. Last but not least, the fully wired mounting plate is fitted into the enclosures. Steven has been with Meureretechnik for 10 years. Back when he was an apprentice, he still had to learn how to position each hole manually. “The technology has come a long way since then,” he says before asking his colleagues the following question: “So, what’s different about the AX?” The answer: “It feels like there’s more room on the gland plate.” And there is indeed 30% more space for inserting cables. “That’s a huge advantage,” insists Steven, because digitalisation is continuously increasing the

number of components in the enclosure and thus also the number of cables that need to be routed inside via the gland plate. He also takes a closer look at the interior wall of the compact enclosure. “There always used to be problems with the interior fit-out, because there weren’t enough options for fitting the depth stays. That has now changed,” he notes. Being able to install the rails at a variety of heights makes the process of designing the levels more flexible. Steven points to a grey box on one of the trolleys. There are now only three cable

harnesses left in it. “Once the box with the cables starts looking empty, I know we’re on the finishing straight,” he says. There were no errors during testing, and the enclosures for the special-purpose machinery manufacturer were even ready half a day ahead of schedule. “You’re happy if, when you get to the end of the day, there’s no danger of failing to meet the delivery deadline and the quality is as it should be,” says a delighted Steven. OPEN SEASON IN SMART HOME CONTROL KNX UK Association President, Paul Foulkes, writes on opening up new business opportunities for installers.

oes a business model built on a single manufacturer’s catalogue work for the manufacturer or for you in the new world of smart home control? If you really want to be a winner, it’s clearly you that should be in control. People want much more in their homes and workplace – they want to integrate heating and cooling, shading and energy control and entertainment with security. They don’t want them installed separately. So, given that a globally-proven, robust open-source automation platform that makes bringing it all together easily exists, and hundreds of manufacturers produce compatible products that are available from forward-thinking UK wholesalers, why wouldn’t you put yourself in the driving seat? The open control platform that allows all these products to talk to each other and work together is KNX, and you can master the software that brings your choice together for a custom installation in a week at a UK training centre. During the weird year of lockdown and tiers, KNX has gone from strength to strength. It celebrated its 30th birthday as the de facto global open control protocol and Sony took its count of manufacturer members past the 500 mark. Yes, that’s 500 manufacturers making controls that are guaranteed to work together, guaranteed to be backwards compatible, and guaranteed to enable you to broaden your horizons by designing interworking between applications controlling every aspect of home control. The real value added in automation comes from the quality of a systems integrator’s thinking, and the combination of skill and talent that creates scalable, flexible solutions that meet customer expectations and – above all – are just reliable.
People want much more in their homes and workplace
So, don’t limit yourself by starting with a proprietary control system that only controls one or two aspects of building control. Instead, leapfrog straight to an open protocol platform that offers the control of the majority of the building’s requirements. You can still add your favourite proprietary control for, say, AV on top, using gateway devices. The big risk with relying on proprietary solutions is that they might require you to update an installation’s central controller when a new range of keypads is released. Meanwhile, with a KNX-based system and KNX-certified products, a systems integrator would have simply programmed the new keypad design into the existing system, made a quick physical swap onsite, and then sat back and continue to enjoy an amicable and profitable long-term relationship with the customer. There are KNX devices and solutions for every application – it may be lighting control with Theben DALI Gateways, BMS integration with the ABB application control or visualisation and remote access with the Gira X1/S1 combo. But that’s not to say you have to ditch your favourite systems or familiar products because, for the most part, the proprietary players have already made the KNX choice for you. They have created the gateways that let the magic happen. Control4 and Savant both offer a native IP connection to KNX, simplifying the integration of KNX lighting and comfort, with audio and video entertainment for homes around the world. Crestron has an IP to KNX gateway, a bi-directional Ethernet interface capable of addressing up to 250 KNX objects, while even Lutron can be interfaced using third party software.
electricalcontractingnews.com
Sonos, Apple Homekit, Siri, Alexa and Google Home are all able to either control or be integrated with a KNX system. KNX integrators in the UK have been delivering high end projects in the UK market for many years. The KNX ETS programming software is continually evolving and its underlying stability is the real strength of KNX – you are investing time and energy in a platform that you will be able to use to consistently deliver projects with lifecycles extending into decades. KNX UK Association members are now maintaining and expanding systems they installed 15 years ago, adding more sophisticated security devices, for instance, or building in the whole new approach to entertainment that has evolved since the CDs that were prevalent when their system was first designed. Not all updates need to be done at once. Projects can be phased, or evolved as lifestyles change – children may leave home or older lifestyles begin to call for automated help with assisted living. All of this can be catered for with the cross-application flexibility of KNX without having to go back to the drawing board. As KNX is a system with distributed intelligence, there’s no high-risk central point of failure and new devices can simply be attached to the nearest node, a switch or sensor perhaps. Changing a KNX system is not disruptive – the customer will hardly know you’ve been there. Big or small, commercial or residential, simple or complex, there will always be a KNX solution that makes sense. Don’t let the proprietary systems fool you – why be good at one or two things for the length of the project when you can be good at many things for the whole, decades-long life of the installation? SMART BUILDINGS
SMART BUILDINGS GET BETTER CONNECTED Facility and corporate real estate managers increasingly depend on data analysis to identify utilisation patterns, trim costs and make buildings into better places to work. Connecting wireless, battery-free sensors to IT infrastructures makes it easier than ever to gain new insights, says Marián Hönsch, Product Manager, EnOcean.
D
ata is critical to understanding, measuring and improving facility management processes and procedures. Versatile and innovative data gathering helps to benchmark the workplace, identifying inefficiencies, improving decision-making, operations and employee experiences.
Translating sensor data into FM insights
New solutions from EnOcean pave the way by enabling the collection of data from billions of sensors in buildings
Increasingly, data needs to be analysed to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, security and COVID-19 regulations. Flexibility and cost reduction – especially energy savings – provide further examples where facility managers can deliver benefits to the workplace. New solutions from EnOcean pave the way by enabling the collection of data from billions of sensors in buildings, using energy harvesting wireless sensors to collect data in a secure and maintenance-free way. The essential requirements of quick onboarding, broad applicability and water-tight security are embodied in a new IoT Connector that translates sensor outputs into ready-to-use data for IoT (Internet of Things) applications and data-driven businesses.
Energy harvesting sensors collect any input, anywhere
“Increasingly, data needs to be analysed to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, security and COVID-19 regulations”
Wireless sensors play a fundamental part in the world of the IoT. After all, they are the devices that collect and transmit raw data in IoT systems. Energy harvesting sensors gain their energy from their surroundings – from movement, light and temperature differences. These sensors are used for building automation and especially for IoT applications. One advantage of this technology is that these devices do not require batteries or wires to function. As a result, they can be placed anywhere in the building – exactly where the data needs to be collected. Flexible installation means that building owners and contractors can carry out the work with minimal disruption to tenants.
Data that’s ready to use and fit for purpose IoT applications in smart buildings can only be implemented where the data for analysis and visualisation are not only available, but available in the appropriate format. The wireless EnOcean Protocol standardised by the EnOcean Alliance is an optimised radio standard for IoT applications, and this delivers all the information and values the customer needs for building their IoT application. The protocol embodied in EnOcean’s technology is designed to run with ultra-low power, and is extremely optimised and compressed to work with energy harvesting technology. One key feature of the IoT Connector software is that it decodes the IoT data from the EnOcean Protocol and translates it into ready to use data in JSON format for the application.
Easy integration The EnOcean IoT Connector is the ideal link between maintenance-free IoT data and IoT application, making the integration of EnOcean products easier than ever before. For bidirectional operation, the IoT Connector decodes and encodes the EnOcean Protocol and provides security through end-to-end encryption with AES128 TLS/SSL technology. To provide maintenance-free data, the IoT Connector supervises sensor health information, ensuring that data telegrams are being transmitted in the defined intervals; that radio signal strength is sufficient to send a protocol; and that the current and

electricalcontractingnews.com
harvested energy stored in the sensor is always sufficient for operation.
Deployment made easy with dashboards The IoT Connector enables the visualisation and analysis of data collected by maintenance-free sensors in customer-built dashboards and is available as a Docker Container Image, which is a file consisting of multiple layers that is used to execute applications in a Docker container. In the typical model, the IoT Connector is deployed in an existing connectivity infrastructure: either in edge devices or third-party clouds. Typical use cases are centralised controls such as lighting and building automation. With the new model, the data is processed directly at the final destination like a cloud or server from the customer. For example, this could be Microsoft Azure cloud. Typical use cases are data analytics and IoT applications and the major advantage is that the client has total control over the data flow. With this new model there is no third party or third storage location involved when transferring the data from sensor to cloud. Customers decide what happens with their data, whether visualised, analysed or archived. An easy and cost-effective way to incorporate the EnOcean IoT Connector into IoT applications is by leveraging existing building infrastructures. The infrastructure can easily be upgraded to send EnOcean IoT data, for example, with an EnOcean USB stick that is put into a Wi-Fi access point from Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company. Also, data from existing EnOcean buildings can directly be forwarded to the IoT Connector in raw format (ESP3 – EnOcean Serial Protocol 3). These access points support the EnOcean USB stick without need for additional software. The Aruba access points talk directly to the IoT Connector running as part of the infrastructure or the final data destination, so no additional gateways are needed. With this complete scenario, customers have exclusive control over the data flow. Solutions like this are already helping facility managers to understand, measure and improve their processes and procedures, unlock inefficiencies, improve decision-making and sharpen their operations. EDVANCE has launched a new future-proof IoT light management system, making it easier than ever to produce the right lighting conditions for defined requirements. VIVARES offers superb simplicity with compatibility to two technologies: a wireless option via VIVARES Zigbee and a wired version using DALI-2 technology. The flexible system is particularly suited for office solutions, especially where rewiring and structural changes are not possible, as is often the case if a building is listed or does not have suspended ceilings. Commenting on the range, Nelo Neves, Sales Director at LEDVANCE UK, says, “Lighting today has to do so much more than simply switch on and off. VIVARES enables new possibilities for our customers with sustainable, dynamic human centric lighting, and customisation. Major benefits for lighting professionals include simple and user-friendly installation, operation and maintenance of VIVARES. The system is ideal for retrofitting into existing buildings and flexible office space solutions.” Based on the leading Zigbee 3.0 standard, VIVARES adapts lighting to the most diverse requirements in the simplest
possible way. Integrating daylight and motion sensors further increases the energy savings that can be achieved, and cloud-based monitoring with VIVARES Cloud Services ensures even greater reliability and security by generating maintenance and energy consumption reports. In addition, separation of lighting communication from Wi-Fi networks ensures maximum security. There are no control cables for unrestricted luminaire placement and the wireless system is scalable for major projects. At the heart of LEDVANCE VIVARES DALI is the Osram DALI Pro 2 IoT control unit. The system connects DALI-2 components – for example sensors, pushbutton couplers and the LEDVANCE VIVARES DALI-2 luminaires. As an open standard, the system is compatible with a wide range of DALI-2-ready luminaires and components. A total of up to 128 luminaires and 126 input devices can be individually addressed via two channels. Installation, configuration and commissioning are particularly simple and user-friendly thanks to the browser-based graphical user interface. Predefined templates and drag and drop enable time-saving and intuitive commissioning. Another advantage of the VIVARES system is the optional cloud service. VIVARES Cloud Services for VIVARES Zigbee and VIVARES DALI offers convenient remote diagnosis of
the system. With an intuitive dashboard, the energy consumption, operating hours of the drivers and other relevant lighting data can be monitored. HOME AUTOMATION — A GROWING MARKET The fifth edition of the Home Automation Market Report – UK 2021-2025 is the latest market report from AMA Research, and it addresses the market for home automation products and systems, which has benefited in recent years from the continued growth in the spread of wireless and app-based technologies.
A
The Click Smart+ app gives householders ultimate control of the smart devices
ccording to the report, the home automation market value increased by more than 46% between 2016 and 2019. However, this growth was disrupted during 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK. After 2020, the market is expected to hit double digit growth, with a forecasted increase of approximately 47% by 2025. Performance holding up during the COVID-19 pandemic is largely attributed to growth in the lower end of the sector and strong growth in online retailing. Home automation products have seen significant growth over the last decade, as housebuilders have started to embrace systems such as lighting and heating controls, with smart plugs also a growing sector. Governmental concern over energy efficiency resulted in policy addressing sustainability issues, including the most recent ‘Future Homes Standard’ proposal which had a positive impact on the demand for home automation products such as smart meters and smart grids. Smart heating and specialist systems account for 80% of the home automation market product mix, with the remaining 20% for entry level/general.
Home automation products have seen significant growth over the last decade
Getting smarter Scolmore launched its Click Smart+ range to meet the growing demand from contractors and end users for smart products and solutions. The comprehensive range will assist installers looking to boost their business with an enhanced smart home offer that will deliver a complete connected home experience to householders. Designed to simplify and streamline connected home products – lighting controls, smart sockets, security cameras and sensors – the Click Smart+ range utilises Zigbee technology, which is one of the most widely adopted smart home technologies. Zigbee certified devices require the Click Smart+ Hub and communicate with each other using a mesh network which creates multiple pathways for the connection of multiple smart home devices without compromising signal and communication range. A key benefit of Zigbee and the new Click Smart+ range is that there is no requirement for a signal repeater, as all wired Zigbee devices have repeaters built in.

BOSCH EXPANDS THE TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT SEGMENT Bosch’s precise and versatile thermal camera, the GTC 600 C Professional, can be used wherever temperature differences need to be detected quickly and reliably. It supports the maintenance of machines and equipment - no matter which application area is concerned.
T
he GTC 600 C Professional is very robust and can even withstand being dropped on concrete from a height of up to two metres. It is also dustand splash-proof, with protection class of IP 54. The camera
stores thermal images with a resolution of 256 x 192 pixels, and each of the 49,152 pixels corresponds exactly to one measuring point. The result is a detailed and precise thermal image shown on a 3.5” display. The measuring range is between -20 and +600 degrees Celsius. The new thermal camera offers even more application and possibilities than
the proven GTC 400 C Professional – especially outdoors and even beyond the use in the construction environment. The tool identifies weak spots such as defective radiators and underfloor heating systems, as well as thermal bridges, just as reliably as overheating of structural components, for example, in switch cabinets.

Even more efficient Quick recording of the current situation, clarifying the requirements for preparing an offer, checking, and documenting work results – the new functions in the GTC 600 C Professional make it easier to perform these tasks. Professionals can now add a voice note up to 30 seconds long to recorded images. To date, this function was only available with tools in a much higher product class. The voice note is easily and conveniently recorded via the integrated microphone and saved in the gallery together with the real and thermal image. This avoids assignment errors, making documentation even easier. The thermal image and voice note can be called up at any time directly on the tool. The operation of the tool is intuitive. In addition to the picture-in-picture function, other functions can be displayed and adjusted at the push of a button, such as the color scale. It can be fixed, for example, in lock mode to visualise measurements of different rooms in the same way and thus compare them better. The GTC 600 C Professional also now features an extended list of emissivity values. More than 30 different materials are stored. If, for example, tiles has been selected as material, the device considers the emissivity of this surface, i.e. its heat radiation, during the infrared measurement. The surface temperature is therefore determined more precisely. In addition, professionals can save the five most important materials individually and have fast access to them. This function distinguishes the GTC 600 C Professional from its competitor models.
The smart solution The GTC 600 C is an essential tool for electricians, providing quality and ease of use for all tasks at hand, no matter if during the acquisition phase, the actual job or afterwards when documenting or presenting the job. Thermography enables immediate indication of potential issues, avoiding costly errors and meeting high expectations of the clients: • Identifying weak or overloaded components in electrical systems. Accuracy is facilitated by setting the camera to overlay thermal and real image, putting the area that is being detected into context, whilst making it easier to assign and locate measurements. • Assessing the conditions and effectiveness of insulation in roofing, windows, or doors, with the automatic display of hottest or coldest points, as well as adaptable temperature graphics. • Locating and assessing the distribution of electrical cables, joints, and panels without needing to disrupt installations such as walls and flooring.
• Checking the functionality of underfloor heating systems and the effectiveness of radiators and vents, aided by the display of hot and cold points.
due to efficiency designed operation processes. The app can connect with the GTC 600 C and GTC 400 C, with the GIS 1000 C integration following end of 2021. Within the different features, the Thermal App allows for customisation of thermal images. Within the edit mode, images can be customised for specific purposes. Mark, circle, or comment to make things clearer for the craftspeople and their clients. All projects and client information are visible at a glance. For each project, individual notes, to-dos and thermal images can be added. The whole project can be shared or single thermal images as PDF or JPEG. The GTC 600 C Professional thermal imager is available right now. It is operated by an interchangeable battery from the Bosch Professional 12V System. Furthermore, as all Professional Bosch power tools, the GTC 600 C has a one year warranty - this can be extended to a total of three years if the tool is registered on the Bosch Professional website within the first month of purchase.
Fast data exchange The GTC 600 C Professional is equipped with a Wi-Fi module, which the tool uses to establish its own Wi-Fi hotspot. Connected smartphones or tablets can be used to import the thermal images, including the measured data, via the Bosch Thermal App. This makes it possible to process information immediately and pass it on to clients, colleagues, or other trades. Alternatively, all data can be transferred to a PC via USB-C cable and processed there by means of the free GTC Transfer Software. The Bosch Thermal App is used to help craftspeople increase their productivity - fast transfer, organisation, and customisation of thermal images saves time and, as consequence, money

DON’T JUST CARRY TOOLS: STORE AND ORDER THEM Brett Smyth, general manager EMEA of Ideal Industries discusses the company’s tool bag range and why it’s so important to choose the correct transport and storage option.
M
aking sure you have the right tools and equipment on hand when you need them on site is fundamental to making safe and efficient progress on a project. Tools tossed in the back of a van or left lying around can easily go missing, get dirty or become damaged, which can lead to wasted time, issues around making do with the wrong equipment, and the expense of replacing misplaced or damaged equipment. The answer to all of this is to invest in a tool bag, pouch or backpack that is specifically designed for electricians. Ideal Industries has a range of bags available to suit varying requirements, developed following extensive user research to find out what electricians really need on site and made with all the quality, durability and functionality the industry expects from Ideal Industries.
All Ideal Pro Series Tool Backpacks also include useful features such as a water bottle holder and a hard, protective case for a mobile phone or sunglasses, providing an ideal solution for both the practical needs of working on site and professional tools and equipment. Both models have also been packed with useful little features designed to make life easier, such as a tape chain and tape measure clip and a pocket specifically designed for holding a fish tape. With a total of 18 total pockets, a drill holder and a removable tool pouch, the dual compartment Ideal Pro Series Backpack is available with a dedicated pocket designed for the user to carry a laptop or tablet with segregation between the electronic device and tool storage. With increasing use of digital construction tools for reporting and snagging, the ability to carry a portable electronic device safely is becoming important for many electricians. It is also useful to be able to carry a portable device alongside tools for any electricians involved in programming of smart buildings, fire alarms or control systems etc.
Backpacks
Tool carrying options
A backpack is an ideal alternative to the traditional tool bag, providing both storage and easy transportation of tools, with even weight distribution and hands-free carrying. The Ideal Pro Series Tool Backpack range includes both a single compartment and a dual compartment model, with a host of common features that illustrate a keen understanding of the practicalities of working on site. Made from durable, tear-resistant fabric, both models have padded straps to provide extra comfort when carrying the backpack and a robust, moulded plastic base to ensure the bag can be set down without risking punctures or snagging. Both models are compact and lightweight and can be zipped fully open and laid flat on the floor, bench or hoist for use as a tool store while working. Each contains multiple tiered pockets designed to enable organisation of tools and ease of access to the right tool at the right time – a perfect solution for electricians that like a place for everything and everything in its place!
For more traditional tool carrying, Ideal Industries also has a range of three large mouth bags in 13”, 16” and 18” variants, each with a detachable shoulder strap for easy carrying. Featuring many of the same useful touches as the backpacks, including the tape chain, tape measure clip and hard sunglasses/phone case, the Ideal Pro Series Large Mouth Bags have a top that opens completely and is reinforced to hold itself open for easy access to large tools. The 13” model has 20 pockets, while the two larger models each have 26 pockets and side pull straps for ease of transport. For those who prefer a pouch that can be carried to the work area from their van, the Ideal Pro Series range also includes tool carriers with many of the same useful features. The Ideal Pro Series Premium Tool Carrier is available
A backpack is an ideal alternative to the traditional tool bag
The Ideal Pro Series range includes a variety of tool pouches and an adjustable tool belt
in two sizes, with 32 or 34 pockets, and offers a sturdy and lightweight design for organising and transporting tools with a variety of internal and external pockets for flexible tool storage. The Ideal Pro Series range also includes a variety of tool pouches and an adjustable tool belt which is compatible with any pouch in the range. With the premium tool pouch, electrical supplies pouch, compact tool pouch, service pouch and a variety of flat and stand up zipper pouches to choose from, there is the right combination of practical tool transportation and storage for any electrician – from large-scale commercial contracting to domestic installation and maintenance.
A tool in its own right Tool carrying equipment is not just an accessory but an essential piece of kit in itself. On site, there is no time for rummaging around in a bag for the right tool; it needs to be at the electrician’s fingertips and stored in its proper place when not in use. The Ideal Pro Series tool bag range has been designed with these principles in mind. Ideal Industries, idealind.com

SEVEN ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR ELECTRICIANS Fluke recently asked electricians what they considered their top five essential tools – there were a few ties so this article shares their top seven.
T
Being able to measure voltage without test leads can save you time and keep you safer. The Fluke T6-1000 Electrical Tester with FieldSense technology and an open fork design slides over the conductor to easily measure voltage up to 1000 V ac and 200 A ac. And it fits in your pocket.
Certified to 1000 V ac and 1500 V dc, Fluke’s insulated screwdrivers offer superior protection from electric shock and accidental drops on live equipment. The ergonomic handle adapts to the user’s hand, causing less strain and work fatigue, and providing maximum torque. Fluke’s heavy-duty combination lineman pliers deliver a secure, powerful grip through serrated jaws and a four-point gripping hole. Their slim shape makes it easier to grab wires in tight spaces and takes up less space in your bag. And they’re 20% lighter than similar pliers. Fluke’s long nose pliers with a slim jaw design perform double duty. Unique milled wave pattern gripping zones and four gripping points for pulling round objects, provide a non-slip grip. Plus, you can cut wires on the side cutting edge.
Insulated tools
Clamp meter
Fluke’s new line of insulated hand tools meets the same stringent requirements for safety, reliability, and ergonomics as all Fluke tools. Precision engineered and forged from German CMV steel, Fluke insulated tools deliver a lifetime of service to help keep you safe.
Clamp the Fluke 376 FC True-RMS Clamp Meter to the conductor and read current measurements on your smart phone at a safe distance from the arc flash zone. Measure up to 1000 A ac/dc and log and trend measurements to capture intermittent faults. Create and send reports right from the field.
ool bag space is always at a premium, so you need to make sure all the tools you carry pull their weight. The key to streamlining your tool bag is to select tools that are versatile, reliable, rugged and compact. Plus, it helps if they offer multiple functions.
Non-contact voltage tester
Multimeter The Fluke 117 Digital Multimeter was designed by electricians for electricians to provide key measurement features – 10 A, resistance, continuity, frequency, and capacitance – along with integrated non-contact voltage detection, Auto Volts, and LoZ functions. Just what you need to work more accurately and productively.
“The key to streamlining your tool bag is to select tools that are versatile, reliable, rugged and compact”
Insulation tester With the Fluke 1587 FC Insulation Tester you get a digital insulation tester integrated with a full featured, true-rms digital multimeter in one compact instrument. Use it to identify insulation problems and read and save the results right on the meter. Or read the results remotely and share with colleagues via your smartphone.
Fluorescent light tester Take the trial and error out of maintaining fluorescent lighting and save a lot of time with the Fluke 1000FLT Fluorescent Light Tester. Performs five essential fluorescent lighting tests with one compact device. Tests lamp, ballast, non-contact voltage, pin continuity and ballast-type discriminator. Drop tested to survive a six-foot drop.
Earth ground tester The Fluke 1630-2 FC Stakeless Earth Ground Clamp measures earth ground ac leakage without installing auxiliary test stakes. With this earth ground tester, there’s no need to disconnect parallel grounds. Makes it easier to conduct ground tests inside buildings, on power pylons, and anywhere you can’t access the soil to place test stakes. Wirelessly connects to a mobile app so you can view and save measurements remotely and share with your team. Fluke, fluke.com

TURNING WASTE INTO WORKWEAR Peter Dumigan, Managing Director of the Hultafors Group UK, looks at developing sustainable alternatives to traditional workwear fabrics.
E
Given increasing levels of awareness about the impact of waste on our environment, this will surely have an impact on the clothes people choose for work in years to come. For Snickers Workwear, this product development and design philosophy is being applied to every new product in the Snickers Workwear collection with the additional assurance that the Snickers hallmarks of design, comfort, functionality and durability will not be compromised in any way. Snickers Workwear’s objective is to ensure that by 2030, 70% of the fabrics used are Preferred Fibres – those with sustainable properties and a lower environmental footprint. As early as 2023, the company will be at 40% – a significant achievement by any measure. For those that haven’t come across the term, Preferred Fibres are those that have more sustainable properties compared to conventional man-made alternatives. Given that almost any fabric and garment can be developed with recycled polyester yarn, Snickers Workwear’s aim is to replace conventional fibres such as polyester with Preferred Fibres, which have full manufacturing transparency, traceability and thus reduce the company’s climate impact and prevent waste from going into landfill. Man-made materials, such as nylon and polyester fabrics, can easily be recycled to create new Preferred Fibres that have the same performance levels in comfort, flexibility and durability as the originals. Take Snickers Workwear’s new Fleece Jackets and Gilets for example.
very builder’s merchant will be aware of the problems of waste and probably have their own recycling systems in place for everything from uPVC to plastic bags and scraps of wood. But just as the effects of plastic waste on the environment has been brought to the centre of consumer consciousness in recent years, so the problems caused by the disposal of clothing and shoes are coming to the fore. Images of ‘ragpickers’ on our waste clothing mountains in Africa are an increasing cause for concern as landfill sites in the UK become overwhelmed and we dispose of our waste on someone else’s doorstep. That’s why the sourcing of sustainable and environmentally responsible workwear and safety footwear are becoming key parts of our environmental consciousness. Fabric technology has always been a key driver in the design and development of Snickers Workwear garments. Fabrics that deliver comfort and functionality, flexibility and durability are key components of every single product in the range. Now, as consumers and corporates strive to reduce their impact on the planet, the Hultafors Group is implementing a policy of replacing conventional fabrics in its workwear products with sustainable fabrics – Preferred Fibres.
Environmentally-friendly fleece jackets Snickers Workwear’s jackets and fleeces for the winter months are probably the company’s best-selling garments during November through to March and, with the growing consciousness among its users about environmental issues, the company expects the new fleece jackets for men and women made from 100% recycled POLARTEC polyester to be a big seller through merchants.
Snickers Workwear’s objective is to ensure that by 2030, 70% of the fabrics used are Preferred Fibres
They’re lightweight and breathable with great insulation properties and, with designs for both men and women – and a fit that ensures mobility and flexibility on site – these soft and versatile garments are great for both work and leisure. Either as an everyday outer jacket in dry, cold weather or as an insulating mid-layer on cold and wet workdays. Wearing sustainable garments such as these is an easy but very urgent step in becoming more environmentally responsible, so by adding them to your range, you’ll be able to make a conscious contribution to the environment and encourage your customers to improve their carbon footprint too.
Wearing sustainable garments is an easy step in becoming more environmentally responsible

Safety footwear that’s creating a positive footprint We’ve all seen that clothing and footwear containers at waste disposal centres fill up almost as quickly as any other, which is why we all have to ensure that footwear and garments are disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. The Hultafors Group’s latest brand addition to its PPE portfolio – EMMA Safety Footwear – has the solution. It’s a policy of ‘100% Circularity’ in all its products. Every shoe and boot in the EMMA range is made entirely from recycled or recyclable materials. It’s 100% ‘circular’ manufacturing, usage and recycling process for every shoe and boot it produces. So check out the EMMA Safety Footwear range to make a positive footprint in your workday. EMMA Safety Footwear, emmasafetyfootwear.com

KEEPING PACE WITH DEMAND: THE EVOLUTION OF WORKWEAR At a time when tradespeople are so busy and demand for their services is high, they need workwear that can keep pace while keeping them protected. Mark Brooks, Workwear and PPE Category Manager at Screwfix, discusses how workwear continues to evolve to meet the needs of busy electrical contractors.
S
Customers are looking to move towards more flexible, lighter and comfortable footwear to work in
crewfix knows, from its monthly Trade Pulse index, conversations heard in store, and feedback through its contact centre, just how busy the trade is at the moment. Driven by a combination of factors, electricians, alongside other trades, are in demand and that means they need workwear that can keep them safe, protected, and smart on every job. Workwear has evolved. Where, historically, products were rigid and heavy-duty, electricians are now looking for more lightweight and comfortable options that still offer the same level of durability and versatility. For example, Site’s Chinook Trousers have proven popular, as the four-way stretch material, breathable fabric and elasticated waistband provide comfort and practicality while on the job. Keeping up-to-date with general fashion trends is also playing a role in the evolution of workwear. Many tradespeople spend most of the day in their workwear, and this means they’re seeking items that reflect their wider clothing tastes. This has led to an increase in demand for slim fit tailored clothing and a rise in popularity of bodywarmers.
Electricians and other trades are also looking at a wider range of brands across their workwear and footwear. Extending Screwfix’s workwear range has meant the company is able to incorporate a mix of branded and non-brand products to reflect how electricians are shopping. Brands such as Skechers, Caterpillar and DeWalt are all included in Screwfix’s workwear range, and they prove popular time and again, alongside the likes of Site and Scruffs. Another trend Screwfix is increasingly seeing from electricians and other tradespeople, is the demand for waterproof clothing. While all trades are looking for more durable waterproof items, it is in fact, electricians who are purchasing these items most. Screwfix offers an extensive range of waterproof workwear which is available in a selection of colours and sizes to suit differing needs, all while keeping tradespeople dry throughout the working day. There are several popular features which not only help on the job, but also help to keep electricians safe. For example, waterproof items can include multi-pockets, adjustable designs, and reflective tape so tradespeople can be seen when working on wet and windy days. When it comes to safety footwear, while Screwfix still stocks heavy duty items for those who prefer it, customers are also now looking to move towards more flexible, lighter and comfortable footwear to work in. Technology and fashion advances in this area are driving innovation. A best-selling safety trainer for Screwfix is the Site Donard trainer. With a reinforced, shock absorbing heel and 200J steel toe cap, the Site Donard trainer is lightweight and flexible with a breathable mesh. For tradespeople who still prefer a heavier item for working in, Screwfix’s top seller is the DeWalt Bolster safety boot. This more traditional boot is 100% leather upper and features an ankle support. The sole is oil-repellent and petrol-resistant.

The evolution of products means they’re now able to adapt more to the pace, trends and desires of the trade
Keeping up-to-date with general fashion trends is playing a role in the evolution of workwear
Finally, a core element of safety workwear that has really come to the fore over the last 18 months is PPE. The most in-demand items have remained the same across the trades. For example, safety glasses and disposable gloves. As a core part of an electrician’s toolkit, Screwfix focuses on maintaining its stock levels in this area and ensuring the company keeps pace with what’s required to keep trades safe. While the core functionality of workwear and safety footwear remains the same for electricians, the evolution of products means they’re now able to adapt more to the pace, trends and desires of the trade. Continued innovation in this area will ensure that this product area never stands still and there’s always the choice, quality and value that electricians seek. For busy electricians, it’s not only important they can get what they need, it’s also crucial they can get it when they need it, which is why Screwfix continues to expand its store network and offers Click and Collect in as little as one minute, to ensure getting the workwear and safety footwear needed is as convenient as possible. CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT
NIGLON’S HELPING YOU MANAGE An electrical installation project isn’t just about making sure the right products are used in the right place: as any good contractor knows, they also need to plan ahead to ensure the final look is as aesthetically pleasing as possible. There’s also the pertinent matter of keeping everyone using the area as safe as possible.
B
oth the safety and the clean look can be achieved through incorporating cable management products into the installation – and selecting the right products from the get-go is essential to ensure the project goes ahead as quickly and smoothly as you’d hope. Niglon knows that being able to choose from a wide range of products makes life easier and that’s why the company has researched, developed and stocked up on more than 650 different cable management products, which include conduit boxes and fittings, support bracketry, brass gland packs, flexible conduit, adaptable boxes and resin cable joints. Of course, cable management is just one of the aspects offered at Niglon, so the company’s valued customers are also able to choose from in excess of 4,000 wiring accessories, industrial accessories, circuit protection devices, tools and fixtures, control and automation, and general lighting products.
Conduit fittings Incredibly, Niglon has been supplying conduit fittings to the electrical industry for more than 50 years. It might not be the first product which comes to mind when people think of Niglon, but they’re actually one of its top selling products and has been for many years. This goes to show that while many things have changed in the industry over the decades – and as suppliers the company is constantly looking at how it can evolve to meet the needs of the contractors using its
products on their installations – the tried and tested reliable products tend to stick around, remaining loved and well-used by each new generation of installers. When it comes to conduit boxes and fittings, Niglon has got everything you’ll need covered – and the great news is, with more than 1,500 electrical wholesalers stocking Niglon throughout the UK, you’re never too far from a stockist. This network is also backed up by the company’s extensive stock holding at its centrally located distribution centre in the West Midlands.
Conduit fittings are one of Niglon’s top selling products

Heavy duty cable protector A more recent addition to the Niglon range is the heavy duty three channel cable protector which has been independently tested by TUV – one of the world leaders in product testing and certification. The product can take loads of up to 7,500kg and, for ease of transportation, arrives in 910mm sections – then as many sections as needed can be simply clicked together when on site. Niglon has also incorporated design features which make installation as simple as possible – such as the hinged lid which allows the cable to be easily laid into place. And with safety being a primary concern, the protectors are made using a chequer-plate pattern which means they’re anti-slip, therefore suitable for lots of different environments.
Brass gland packs
Flexible conduits Niglon has you covered when it comes to flexible conduits, with a comprehensive range of options from 12mm to 50mm in diameter. The competitively priced contractor packs come complete with glands and are fantastic for many standard applications. However, the company knows that more demanding installations will require different conduits, and that’s why it offers galvanised steel, liquid resistant, and liquid tight variants too.
From standard BW and CW options to LSF, CXT and flameproof products – available in sizes ranging from 20mm to 75mm – Niglon has it all when it comes to brass gland packs. Commercial director, Paul Dawson, comments: “These products have been flying off the shelves, especially in the past 12 months, over which we’ve seen a 50% growth in sales in this area. This has mainly come from the rise in people working from home during the pandemic, meaning there’s a greater need for home offices. Businesses have also needed to change how they trade and interact with their customers, which again has required the installation of these types of products.”
Resin cable joints are an essential for contractors who are repairing damaged cables
Resin cable joints Resin cable joints are an essential for contractors who are repairing damaged cables – or for those needing to extend a power cable using an existing length with a new one. Many installers keep resin cable joints as part of their regular kit to ensure they’ve got some on hand whenever needed. That’s why Niglon offers kits which can joint cables as small as 1.5mm2 and as large as 300mm2. And of course, because Niglon is committed to ensuring safety at all times, its kits are approved to BS EN 50393:2006-11 standards – safe and handy, what’s not to like?
Why choose Niglon? Niglon’s purposebuilt headquarters are situated in the heart of England
Niglon knows a good product speaks volumes when it comes to choosing which supplier to opt for – but the company also believes that its job is much more than that. As a fourth-generation family owned and run firm, Niglon has retained the personal customer service that stood the company in good stead when the business first launched. Nearly 80 years later, its product ranges may have expanded almost beyond the imagination of the company’s founder – but the high-quality service he demanded from his first members of staff has remained the core of the Niglon ethos. While Niglon is a fan of traditional good customer service, it is a truly modern company – with a purpose-built headquarters situated in the heart of England to match. Niglon was one of the first in the industry to adopt revolutionary stock fulfilment processes; has invested heavily and retained a continual focus on research and development; and prides itself on its long-standing commitment to independent third-party certification, to ensure all products are rigorously tested. Niglon is also more than happy to talk you through its extensive ranges – whether you’re after cable management or products from any of the other supply categories the company specialises in. MAXIMISING THE BENEFITS OF A FIBRE-OPTIC INSTALLATION With a high speed broadband connection of ever-increasing importance – especially in light of the pandemic – BT OpenReach is looking to roll out FTTP (Fibre-to-the-Premises) connections across the UK. However, with the ‘last-mile’ of copper cabling from the cabinet to the property still in place, the speed and stability of the new connection is curtailed. Paul Churm, Telecommunications Specialist at REHAU, talks through how contractors can maximise the benefits of a new fibre-optic installation.
T
he pandemic has brought about somewhat of a sea change in the way we view connectivity, with the challenges posed by the past year rendering our appetite for data greater than ever. This is perhaps most true of the nation’s businesses, with a 2021 Statista report indicating that 82% of businesses used the internet for banking in the past year. Moreover, 59% required the internet to operate social media pages and accounts, while 58% used it to store customers’ personal information. As such, it is clear that a high speed internet connection can no longer be considered a luxury – but rather a necessity.
Limitations of Infrastructure With a gigabit-capable connection becoming an increasingly attractive feature for any premises to have, many property developers and businesses are looking to ensure that premises come equipped with fibre-optic broadband as standard. While this is certainly a positive sign for the nation’s connectivity goals, it is important to first consider the limitations of current infrastructure before undertaking new installations. At present, the UK is largely equipped with antiquated, copper-based wiring. This type of infrastructure is designed for landline phone connections and cable television, and is growing increasingly ill-suited for the nation’s connectivity needs. As such, BT OpenReach is looking to phase out its copper network by 2025 in favour of the ‘Fibre First’ programme. This initiative will see FTTP connections rolled out to an additional 551 cities and towns across the UK, in an effort to satiate the nation’s growing thirst for data. However, it should be noted that if fibre-optic installations are completed using an external distribution point such as a toby box, the effectiveness of the connection may be limited. This is owing to the fact that the external cabinet is most often linked up to the house connection by way of existing infrastructure that is

already in place. This so called ‘last mile’ of copper cabling is not designed with high speed internet in mind, and so can have a substantial negative effect of prospective broadband speeds.
Enabling high speed connections A fibre-optic connection is only as strong as its weakest link. As such, if contractors want to maximise its benefits, they should ensure that the ‘last mile’ of infrastructure is future-proofed for high speed fibre-optic cabling before undertaking an installation. For electrical contractors, this can be done by fitting microducts within the premises, allowing optical fibres to be blown all the way into the property and enabling a true FTTP connection. Moreover, with many businesses now demanding more sophisticated broadband set-ups such as FTTD (Fibre-to-the-Desk), the installation of microducts allows scope for a number of complex arrangements to be introduced in future. Traditionally, fibre arrangements in commercial properties have made use of an ONU (Optical Network Unit) within the property to do this, splicing the cable between multiple devices. However, the installation of microducts in an FTTD set-up allows each workstation to benefit from its own connection, with speeds of up to 10Gbits/s. This can have a major effect on a property’s valuation, which contractors should consider when specifying solutions for developers. However, the quality of the microduct solution employed should be a key consideration before beginning any installation. Low calibre products can provide sub-optimal conditions for the blowing-in process, while even presenting a health and safety risk in the event of a fire. To ensure that microduct fittings do not fall foul of legislation, contractors should opt for only trusted solutions.
A high speed internet connection can no longer be considered a luxury
When undertaking a new installation, it is critical that electrical ducts meet British Standard (BS) EN61386, as specified in the criteria set out by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). BS EN61386 specifies that a system’s installation must not interfere with the property’s occupational or fire safety. Moreover, cabling must not present an additional hazard in the event of a fire. Certain low quality cables are made with halogens, meaning that they produce harmful gases during combustion. This has the potential to exacerbate the blaze, or even cause direct harm to the occupant. As such, by opting for cables and ducts that adhere to BS EN61386, contractors can guarantee the safety of their installation at no extra effort. High quality solutions like REHAU’s RAUSPEED Inhouse micro ducts, are halogen-free and produce minimal smoke during combustion, in accordance with BS EN 61034-2 regulations regarding smoke density. Their self-extinguishing nature ensures additional compliance with BS EN 61386-1, meaning that the spread of a potential fire is significantly limited. A fibre-optic installation can introduce a host of benefits to any property, but it is vital that adequate infrastructure is in place if contractors want to maximise its effectiveness. Solutions such as REHAU’s RAUSPEED Inhouse allow commercial premises to achieve a true high speed connection without the time and costs associated with replacing existing copper cabling. Moreover, by opting for high quality solutions, contractors can guarantee compliance with safety standards without undertaking special measures. REHAU, rehau.com

CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT
NO COMPROMISE WHEN IT COMES TO FIRE SAFETY Three years after the Hackitt Review, the Building Safety Bill is set to create lasting change. Yet Wrexham Mineral Cables (WMC) Commercial Manager, Steve Williams, explains why all hazards need to be put under the spotlight to make way for a safer future.
I
n the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, building safety has rarely been out of the headlines. The fire at New Providence Wharf in London was another reminder of why occupant safety needs to be a priority throughout the life cycle of a building. London Fire Brigade’s initial findings showed that a serious failure of a vital safety systems resulted in the building acting like a ‘broken chimney’, leaving residents’ only escape route smoke logged. London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner Richard Mills commented: “The New Providence Wharf fire needs to be an urgent wake-up call to all building owners and managers. Look at the fire safety solutions inside your building and take action if they are not performing correctly. It is too late to wait for a fire to see if they work.” Three years after Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, the government has sought to introduce legislation to address safety concerns. And in publishing the Building Safety Bill last month, it highlights a commitment to create a lasting, generational change. The bill has been designed to tackle bad practice head on and will ensure high standards of safety for people’s homes, in particular for high rise buildings. In addition, a new regulator will provide essential oversight at every stage of a building’s lifecycle, holding those in charge accountable for any mistakes, with tougher sanctions for those that fail to meet their obligations.
WMC believes there needs to be a single test for enhanced fire-resistant cables
Greater accountability The changes will have an impact on almost everybody in the supply chain. And the overriding message is that in order to make buildings safer for the people who live and work in them, we must embrace a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Yet we can only truly make buildings safe by identifying all possible hazards. To date, the focus has been largely on identified defects. But it is the unidentified issues – such as the installation of inferior fire-resistant cables – which, WMC believes, need to be put under the spotlight.
Cable Management www.niglon.co.uk 0121 711 1990 | sales@niglon.co.uk 52 | August 2021
Cabling & Cable Management – Wrexham Mineral Cable.indd 52
It has also become clear that steps need to be taken to ensure the tests to which construction products are subjected to are relevant and can be relied upon. This is particularly important for specifiers and designers with whom the responsibility of product specification lies. How can they be held accountable if products cannot be relied upon and do not perform as marketed?
Higher classification Should a fire break out, fire-resistant cables play a fundamental role in ensuring that emergency and building critical systems – including emergency lighting, extraction systems, emergency generators and fire alarms – are supported, providing vital time for the safe passage of occupants out of the building, and allowing for shutdown procedures to take place. In order to meet the requirements of a fire-resistant cable, they must meet the British Standard appropriate to their type of fire-resistant cable. There are several references for fire performance on cables including BS 50200, BS8434, BS8519 and BS6387. However, as we all know, fire is a dynamic force that moves, expands, and changes the shape, size, and properties of all it comes into contact with. As a manufacturer of fire-resistant cables, WMC has been calling for more stringent testing standards for years. The company believes there needs to be a single test for enhanced fire-resistant cables. Regardless of size or construction, if a cable is required to function in the event of a fire, each cable sample must have to pass a true fire scenario test. Due to its unique construction, no polymers or plastics are used to aid fire protection on Mineral Insulated Copper Cable (MICC). This means over 85% of the entire MICC range fall in the under 20mm category. Currently, only fire-resistant cables that are greater in diameter than 20mm must undergo testing for direct impacts to reflect falling debris and water testing on a single test sample. For fire resistant cables under 20mm, no direct impact testing takes place and different stages of each test are carried out on different samples of cable.
The government has sought to introduce legislation to address safety concerns
As the call for mandatory sprinkler systems in taller buildings gathers momentum, it becomes even more concerning that smaller fire-resistant cables may not survive fire, water, and direct impact. This has resulted in too many cables being classed as fire resistant, but that would not be adequate in the event of a fire, as the tests do not represent real world conditions. WMC strongly believes there should be a higher classification of cables introduced to help specifiers and designers identify those which can survive, rather than simply resist fire. A new was standard introduced in the wake of Grenfell. BS8629:2019 states enhanced fire-resistant cables must be placed in costly fire-proof conduits unless its construction is armoured or made from MICC. These very cables not only don’t perform like a fire survival cable, but they are more expensive with fire resistant conduits and take longer to install. The recommendations in BS8629:2019 have clearly got many experts asking what was recognised in BS8629 that is considered not applicable for any other type of fire-resistant cable standard such as BS 5839, BS 8434-2, BS EN 50200 & BS 6387 CWZ. In an era of greater accountability, there should be no compromise, and as an industry we can no longer aim for minimum compliance to get the job done. CABLING & CABLE MANAGEMENT
CABLE MANAGEMENT THAT MAKES SAVINGS ACROSS THE BOARD Mark Kimberley, senior product manager at Gripple, explains how a new approach to cable management can cut project times and budgets on projects from commercial to residential and education to healthcare.
T
hreaded rod and strut has been a trusted method of cable management suspension for decades and provided a reliable solution for most projects. However, considering newer, more modern systems, such as trapeze bracket solutions, can not only cut down labour and budget, but can also create a greener and slicker site.
Thinking ahead When considering suspension of cable containment systems, traditional rod and strut has been the go-to method for contractors for many years. While it has proved to be an effective and sturdy method for suspending cable management, the need to have it cut to size on or off-site adds additional cost and on-site waste. It also requires hot works permits and skilled or trained personnel to carry it out. Therefore, Gripple is seeing a real shift towards newer alternatives, and forward-thinking contractors are increasingly turning to prefabricated options which have benefits beyond simple cost savings. For example, the company’s engineers have created a new generation of the patented Fast Trak range, a prefabricated, trapeze bracket solution designed to provide speed, flexibility and efficient use of restricted space. Containment of cables can be quickly and easily installed with the use of single channel hangers that spread loads across its fixing points and allow for quick adjustment through a unique locking mechanism. This innovation in suspension systems is suited to all mechanical building services, with load capacities of up to 220kg that arrive on-site as a ready-to-use kit.
Forward-thinking contractors are increasingly turning to prefabricated options

Time is money
Multi-tier brackets have four sides with suspension points on every face, offering the potential to attach multiple services in any direction, which adds greater versatility for installers. These brackets are ordered precisely to the right size, which eliminates the need to have them cut to size after they arrive on site. It also saves the time needed to carry out the adjustments and eliminates the need for hot works permits or specially trained site engineers to carry out the work safely. Opting for a segregation bracket eradicates the need for extra bracketry or subsections when segregating Class 1 and 2 data and power cables as specified in building regulations.
Installation times can be up to six times quicker with today’s modern suspension systems. This can result in significant savings in time and labour costs, leading to greater profitability. A recent customer commissioned the latest version of Gripple Fast Trak range for cable management at an educational setting and reduced labour by 536 hours by using the trapeze bracket instead of threaded rod and strut and saved more than £16,000 in labour costs and materials.
BIM benefits To make the process even more efficient, Gripple has specialist BIM engineers who create drawings specifically for customers’ projects so main contractors can benefit from exact quantities of products ordered and delivered to site, as bills of materials are generated by the work the company has undertaken prior the project commencing. This reduces manual handling, on-site storage and waste. It is now becoming commonplace for many major private and public sector construction projects to specify that contractors now source BIM-ready materials to ensure their framework offers best practice, such as correct file sharing and offering peace of mind to the client. Incorporating BIM-ready products also reduces the chance of service clashes and the company packs equipment up by floor or by building to ensure they can be delivered directly to exactly where they’re needed. However, the benefits of utilising modern, prefabricated products extends beyond the convenience of ready-to-install equipment, ease of fitting and green credentials. It’s possible to shave thousands of pounds off project costs.
A tight spot Awkward angles and restricted ceiling height need not pose extra time and budget constraints through specialist and additional supplies. By choosing a system which can be easily accessed and adjusted it not only overcomes issues caused by small spaces but offers a safer alternative to traditional containment. The Gripple fabricated short track feature ensures cable containment supports are tight to the ceiling and can be multi-tiered to allow efficient use of space for additional services, making it an ideal solution for residential developments and buildings requiring optimised use of internal space. Also, vertically adjusted systems that can be altered before the load is applied are ideal for rectangular ducts and plenum boxes. This allows maximum preparation on the ground and minimising time spent at height.
The benefits of utilising modern, prefabricated products extends beyond the convenience of ready-to-install equipment
Make the change It can be daunting to switch to new methods and materials after many years of installing the same products. But with the emerging technology in the suspension and cable management industry, there are alternatives which can offer the same reliability and sense of stability, but with increased versatility and safety, reduced costs and environmental effects. PLUG AND PLAY POWER DISTRIBUTION BUILDS COMPLIANCE AND RESILIENCE INTO POLICE HQ David Brown from CMD, the specialist in power distribution and workstation power for commercial environments, discusses the use of the company’s powertrack, Power Hub and workstation power systems at the new Gwent Police headquarters building in Cwmbran.
B
uilding resilience into power distribution networks is important in any commercial environment. It could involve measures as simple as installing cleaners’ hives to ensure essential equipment is not inadvertently unplugged when the cleaner plugs in the vacuum, it should always involve circuit protection and it can sometimes be wise to limit the number of workstations dependent on a single circuit to prevent nuisance tripping. At the current electrical fit out of the new Gwent Police headquarters in Cwmbran, all of these strategies have formed part of the specification using CMD Betatrak powertrack and Power Hub distribution systems to aid both speed of installation and resilience.
A 21st Century police HQ
The new building will occupy around half the footprint of the existing HQ
The new 5,178m2 headquarters in Cwmbran will replace the current Gwent Police HQ in nearby Croesyceiliog and will accommodate 480 officers and staff. The new building will occupy around half the footprint of the existing HQ and has been designed to reduce running costs by more than £1m a year, while providing facilities that include the force’s control room for 999 and 101 calls, wellbeing and training accommodation, and a base for major crime teams, support services and senior management. Delivered by electrical contractor, Highadmit Projects, the electrical fit out has been specified to ensure that any trips or outages on the electrical network affect as little of the building as possible to support 24/7 operational continuity and efficiency. The Power Hub system was specified by the M&E consultant in conjunction with the client, Monmouthshire County Council, in order to satisfy its electrical design criteria.
Combining speed with security of supply
The CMD Power Hub system provides up to six power outputs from a single mains input
Power Hub system The power distribution installation includes Auxiliary Earth 63A Betatrak powertrack, which connects to CMD’s Power Hub system. Power is then delivered to the workstation via CMD’s Elite+ under desk modules. Simple to install and providing flexibility for office layouts and future adaptations, the CMD Power Hub system provides up to six power outputs from a single mains input. The system combines compact hub units with flexible metal conduits or ‘umbilicals’, which connect the hubs together to create the electrical distribution network in the floor void. The metal flexible conduits provide cables with mechanical and environmental protection, allowing compliance with Wiring Regulation 543.7 ‘Earthing requirements for the installation of equipment having high protective conductor currents’. They ensure a similar level of resilience to powertrack systems and delivering a low maintenance, fit and forget power distribution solution.
CMD’s Betatrak power distribution system has been installed to distribute the incoming supply on each storey and creates a central spine within the floor void and around 60, six-way CMD Power Hub Units have been installed on each storey to take power to the required locations. At installation, the requirement is for no more than 12 double sockets to be powered by each hub circuit, ensuring any outages are localised to enable the remainder of the building to operate as usual. Ample redundancy has been built into the system to enable further tap-offs to be installed as required, should occupancy rates or connectivity requirements change. Each Power Hub will connect to a CMD Elite+ under desk workstation module via a CMD 20 Series fast-fit Floor Box and serve just two workstations, with cleaner’s hives installed for dedicated sockets for cleaning equipment. With circuit protection at the Betatrak, the Power Hub and the Elite+ workstation power module, any trips on the system will affect a limited number of workstations and devices in case of an electrical fault. For additional resilience, Highadmit Projects has also installed a UPS system for critical locations and a diesel generator capable of a week-long back-up.
Joined-up specification The combination of power distribution and workstation power systems from CMD has enabled a joined-up specification for the Gwent Police HQ at Cwmbran, which has the high levels of resilience required for a blue light environment, while enabling a fast-track installation programme. The electrical fit-out is due for completion in September 2021. CMD, cmd-ltd.com

Brett Smyth, general manager EMEA of IDEAL Industries explains “The Gen II Lever Wire Connectors have been developed following extensive research with electrical professionals as part of our commitment to designing products that are tailored to the needs of our customers on site. They are packed with features to prevent errors and ensure consistency, enabling wire terminations to be carried out more quickly with less risk of snagging. “For example, the levers have been designed to open in the opposite direction to the insertion port, locking the cables into position to prevent any accidental loosening or pull-out, ensuring a safe and secure connection throughout the lifecycle of the installation.” All the IDEAL Industries Gen II Lever Wire Connectors in the new range have a clear casing to enable easy inspection and there is a check port for testing, enabling full safety and consistency verification at the point of installation. The compact design enables easier fitting in junction boxes and enclosures, which is particularly useful in lighting and access control installations, where multiple conductors often need to come together in a tight space. IDEAL Industries has created a range of pack sizes for the new Gen II Lever Wire Connectors range, including boxes, bags and kits, to provide plenty of choice for electricians. Amongst the kits is a new Twin & Earth Kit, which includes a stripper, cutter and 20 each of the 32A-rated twoand three-port Push-In and Gen II Lever wire connectors, along with a 20-piece bag of assorted 32A connectors, including the popular SpliceLine and three-port Push-In Connectors, along with the new two- and three-port Gen II Lever Wire Connectors. Brett Smyth adds: “We already know that there’s a substantial move towards using lever and push-in connectors as a
faster and more consistent alternative to terminal strips because of the success of our existing In-Sure range. “The new Gen II range enables even faster consistent connections, with a product that is CE marked, UKCA and UL listed, ENEC accredited, and fully compliant with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, helping electrical contractors to reduce both risk and labour costs when carrying out terminations.” IDEAL Industries, idealind.com

IDEAL INDUSTRIES SHOWCASES NEW TEST AND MEASUREMENT RANGE The new test and measurement range from Ideal Industries includes Clamp Meters, Fork (split jaw) Meters, Digital Multimeters (DMMs), Voltage Meters, Non-Contact Voltage Testers and Infrared Thermometers. It is segmented into tools for commercial, domestic and apprentice use and has been created with common features and functions to make it easier for electricians to switch easily from one piece of equipment to another. For example, across many of the testers, non-contact voltage, high voltage and continuity indicators have a common display functionality and are located at the top of the unit. The vibrant yellow coloured casing makes it easy to identify the testers on site. The over moulded casing means several of the testers are robust enough to withstand drops and knocks with up to two metre drop protection. Several of the products have IP ratings that provides certain levels of dust and water protection. Probe holders on the back of testers allow for two-hand testing and category ratings provide electricians with peace of mind that the tester is fit for the job and will pass scrutiny if their equipment is audited. User research was integral to Ideal Industries’ product development process, which is why a back light torch function has been included for most testers. The innovative, patented bottom display, which was previously only available on Ideal Industries’ TightSight Clamp Meters, has now also been incorporated into the Fork Meter thanks to user feedback too, aiding visibility for users when working in confined and poorly lit locations. Other key features of the range include a LEAD warning on the DMMs, notifying the user if the test lead has been inserted into the wrong port. Meanwhile, the FUSE notification feature alerts the user to a blown fuse, while allowing them to continue with measurements unaffected by the fuse. Ideal Industries, idealind.com

Plus, Webasto is now providing a five-year guarantee promise at no extra cost, thereby significantly exceeding the statutory guarantee period of two years. A further benefit of the new Webasto Pure is the factory-integrated DC residual current device. This means that it is completely unnecessary to install a separate ‘Type B RCD’ circuit breaker, which saves costs and installation effort. “Webasto is synonymous with high-quality and user-friendly products. With the new Webasto Pure we are specifically addressing customer wishes relating to EV charging. We are also offering consumers safe and reliable access to electromobility with our extended Webasto guarantee,” explains Heike Niehues, who is responsible for the global aftermarket business at Webasto. Just like its predecessor, the new Webasto Pure is available in the two power variants 11 kW and 22 kW to meet individual charging performance requirements. A new feature is that the installer has further available amperages when commissioning the EV charging unit. This enables the installer to better match the charging current to the infrastructure already available on-site. In addition, the universal key switch is retained, which blocks access to the charging station for unauthorised users, as is the simple installation, fast commissioning, and ease of operation of the charger (plug and play). An important feature for electricity transmission system operators is that the new Webasto Pure allows remote access via a ripple control receiver for ensuring grid stability. OVIA’S FLAMEGUARD DOWNLIGHTS NOW WITH PUSH-FIT FLOW CONNECTORS Ovia is investing in the Flameguard range to further enhance its features. Flameguard fire-rated downlights are supplied pre-wired with push-fit Flow connectors, which feature push-in, low maintenance terminals to offer more to installers. Products that incorporate Ovia’s Flameguard system technology benefit from a 30-, 60- and 90-minute fire rating – including I joists, metal web joists and solid timber. They also have an acoustic rating (0dB) and are airflow compliant. The Flameguard intumescent seal, when exposed to fire, forms a carbon char which separates the substrate from the heat of the fire. The seal eliminates the flow of air through the void, preventing combustion. There are four of the Flameguard LED downlights in the range – GU10 cast fixed, GU10 fixed, GU10 cast adjustable and GU10 adjustable, available in a choice of chrome, satin chrome and white. They have an IP rating of up to IP65 and come with a warranty. Ovia, oviauk.com

ELLIS FOCUSES ON NON-METALLIC MARKET WITH SOLUS LAUNCH Ellis Patents has boosted the strength of its product offering with the launch of Solus – a range of non-metallic single cable clamps suitable for cables from 25 to 75mm. Designed, developed and manufactured at Ellis’ North Yorkshire headquarters, Solus is made from a high strength glass-filled nylon and joins Trident – a trefoil clamp – as part of its expanding non-metallic product range. Danny Macfarlane, managing director of Ellis, says: “Non-metallic cable cleats have been very popular in mainland Europe for many years, and their use is now growing swiftly in the UK and many of the export markets we operate in around the world.” “Their benefits are numerous but key is the fact that they have extremely long lifespans meaning they can be used practically anywhere, including in extremely harsh environments.” The reason for Solus’ extremely long lifespan is that the glass-filled nylon material used is a high-grade engineering polymer. The new range is also fully stackable, meaning additions to cable runs can be made without having to disturb any cables already installed. Solus also features different mounting options that enhance its installation versatility; and because the product can accommodate a wide cable range, customers can stock small numbers of units to cover a wide range of cable sizes. “Innovation is very much at the heart of everything we do, and Solus is the latest in a long line of new and improved products to have come out the Ellis Patents Innovation Hub here in Rillington,” adds Danny. Key to Ellis’ ability to innovate is its ability to take products from initial ideas through to IEC61914:2015 compliant products; with its in-house Innovation Hub incorporating 3D printers, FEA analysis and a fully equipped testing laboratory.
