BY UK ELECTRICIANS REVEALED IronmongeryDirect has analysed thousands of Spotify playlists containing trade-related words in their titles, such as ‘tradesperson’, ‘plumber’ and ‘building site’, to identify the songs which appear the most frequently.

Australian rockers AC/DC are the most popular artist and feature in trade playlists more than twice as often as any other singer or band. Three of the band’s hits feature in the top 10 tradey tunes, with Highway to Hell and Thunderstruck joining Back to Black on the list.

Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 single Dreams, from their best-selling album Rumours, is the second most listened to track, ahead of Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood.

ALFIE’S ARMY COMPLETES CHALLENGE TO RAISE MONEY FOR YOUNG LIVES VS CANCER A team of 13, including National Ventilation’s Andy Bills, has hiked 53km through the Peak District to raise money for the Young Lives vs Cancer charity. The Peak District Challenge is an event which welcomes 2,500 adventurers to test themselves with a range of options from 25km to 100km. Starting and finishing in Bakewell, the team took on the challenge to give something back to the charity that has been supporting Andy’s son, Alfie, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at just three.

All three of the 13 crossed the line, including Andy, who finished the challenge in 12hrs 20mins, burning 5,000 calories. Alfie’s Army has raised an impressive £11,123. However, with charities hard hit during COVID and Young Lives vs Cancer offering families such vital support, the team would welcome further donations.

Young Lives vs Cancer is a cancer charity for children and is funded by donations. The charity helps families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. Every day, 12 more children hear the devastating news that they have cancer.

MEETING NET ZERO TARGETS – AN INSTALLER’S PERSPECTIVE

EMPLOYERS WHO ‘STEPPED UP’ DURING CRISIS PRAISED BY SECTT AND SJIB The Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) and Scottish Joint Industry Board have saluted Scotland’s employers after a record number of apprentices were welcomed into the electrical sector.

A total of 738 new entrants to the industry were recruited in 2021, confounding fears that recruitment could be a casualty of the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

SECTT says the new cohort exceeded all expectations, being 50% up on 2020 and more than the 700 which would be closer to a normal year’s intake.

It praised employers for their positive attitude in such circumstances and said that the figures suggested the attractiveness of the industry.

Anne Galbraith, CEO of SECTT, says: “This really has been a remarkable year.

We took on 500 apprentices in 2020 and we are taking on a further 738 starting in the autumn of 2021. In a normal year, I would expect to take approximately 700 new starts, so this year has exceeded expectations and we are still only in July.

“In addition, nearly all colleges are full and SECTT is now exploring further opportunities for next year.

“We would like to thank all employers who have stepped up and taken on an apprentice this year. As the Scottish Government targets for transition to zero carbon move closer, it shows a real commitment and a recognition that we need to train the electricians of the future now.”

The news comes after the new top team at SECTT recently highlighted the importance of electrical apprenticeships.

David Cowburn, Chief Executive Officer at NAPIT, has reflected on the progress made by the electrical industry to enhance electrical safety over the past decade and considers the issues which remain unresolved.

In recent months he has met with senior politicians which provided the opportunity to discuss with cabinet ministers the need for government and industry to work together to meet carbon reduction ambitions.

What has been clear throughout the discussions is that there is a recognition that future energy and carbon targets cannot be met without both carrot (grants, loans, subsidies) and stick (legislation).

It would be easy to look at the cancellation of the Green Home Grants Voucher Scheme and see only failure, but we need to consider why it failed and what lessons can be learned, he said.

On the regulatory side, the Future Homes Standard will set out energy efficiency standards to ensure that new homes built will be ‘net zero ready’. This represents a clearer indicator of government commitment than funding mechanisms.

Simplifying the training and certification entry route for installers is key to creating a robust, competent workforce. Whilst improving standards and protecting customers must remain the cornerstones of government policy, consideration must also be given to the impact on installers of the cost and complexity of complying with requirements, he said.

INDUSTRY NEWS COWBOY CUSTOMERS LEAVE TRADESPEOPLE £1.7BN OUT OF POCKET New research from Powered Now has found that, at a time when the backlog for tradespeople to commence work on home improvements is on average three months, builders are being swindled out of vast sums.

Whether it be creating fake appointments with tradespeople to get out of rental agreements or as a threat to a landlord to receive a deposit back in full, seldom is it the case that the tradesperson who is losing money through bogus appointments is considered. What’s more, it appears that many Brits have actively withheld payment from their tradespeople to attempt to negotiate a lower price, or lodged false complaints with threats of bad reviews, simply to receive a discount.

Key statistics: • Over five million (5,038,000) Brits have requested a quote for a project from a tradesperson when they know they will not choose them • Over two million (2,496,000) Brits have forgotten about an appointment and been out when the tradesperson has arrived at the agreed time • Over one million (1,282,000) Brits have unfairly criticised work done during a home improvement project in order to receive a discount • 1,743,000 Brits have delayed payment to a tradesperson in order to try to negotiate a lower price With so many people agreeing to use the time of tradespeople for services they know will not be ultimately required, Powered Now estimates that between £776m to £1.75bn of revenue for the UK’s trades has been frittered away, purely through bogus quotes.

CRAWLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL JOINS WITH CITYFIBRE The rollout of a town-wide Full Fibre network in Crawley has taken a major step forward, thanks to a new agreement between CityFibre and Crawley Borough Council.

People living in over 9,000 homes managed

by Crawley Borough Council will be among the first to connect to Crawley’s new town-wide Full Fibre network. This is thanks to the signing of a blanket wayleave agreement, which gives CityFibre permission to connect all Crawley Borough Council properties to the new network it is building across the town.

CityFibre is investing £23m to bring the fastest, most reliable digital connectivity to Crawley and has made swift progress on the town-wide rollout.

This new partnership will ensure the project can continue to go ahead smoothly and reach social housing sites as well as other homes and businesses in the area.

ECA URGES CAREFUL PLANNING AMID ONGOING MATERIALS SHORTAGE

JIB INCREASES NUMBER OF COURSES ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING The JIB Skills Development Fund has increased the number of courses eligible for funding, following a record year of course grants. The Fund distributed £30,000 in course grants in the last funding year and has set about helping even more people with a renewed focus on low carbon technologies.

The charity provides financial assistance for skills development and career progression, helping apprentices undertake additional training alongside their studies, those employed by JIB member companies and those who are unemployed and in need of financial assistance to re-enter the workforce.

This year, eligibility has been extended to additional occupations for qualified electricians in areas such as solar photovoltaics, electric vehicle charging and heat pump installation and maintenance.

Richard Clarke, Chair of the charity trustees board, said: “Last year saw more applications than ever before. Design and Verification was particularly popular as part of career progression to Technician grading. We are delighted that the Skills Development Fund continues to provide valuable financial help to people in the industry in areas where we are expecting to see the greatest demand for new skills and training. Ensuring the workforce is suitably qualified and competent raises the bar on standards, prevents a race to the bottom, and we are happy to continue supporting the industry in these crucial sectors.”

The ECA is urging its members, as well as the wider industry, to continue to exercise caution and plan as far ahead as possible on projects involving cable management systems (CMS).

This comes after manufacturers’ body BEAMA recently warned that long lead times for CMS supplies are expected to continue into Q1 of 2022, coupled with increasing raw material costs. Factors cited to be behind the ongoing supply problems include shipping and shortages of timber and cardboard, which are affecting packaging.

ECA CEO Steve Bratt comments: “Extra care should be taken when planning projects, and with project costings. For many, ongoing delays in the availability of some cable management system materials will continue to have a negative impact on cost and completion time.

“With this in mind, our advice to the industry is to order your CMS materials in good time to ensure you can finish as planned. ECA will keep members informed as the situation develops.”

INDUSTRY NEWS LONDON REVEALED TO BE THE BEST CITY IN THE UK FOR TRADESPEOPLE With the inevitable rise of Britons looking to renovate or ‘fix up’ their home, Google search volumes show a huge 138,700 people per month searching for plumbers and electricians to repair and renovate their homes. Over 50,000 of these searches came from people located in the capital, suggesting London is the best place to work as a plumber or electrician, due to the city’s number of call out opportunities.

According to findings by alldayPA, London has been revealed to be the number one city for tradespeople to work across the UK. In second place was Birmingham (20,350 searches per month), followed by Glasgow (15,400), Bristol (14,050) and Edinburgh (13,600). The data experts found that these locations give tradespeople the opportunity to earn well over an average salary each year.

Through these findings, alldayPA has pinpointed which locations plumbers and electricians would benefit from relocating to if they want to expand their business or want to increase their salaries. The average UK tradesperson could earn an average annual salary of between £27,572 and £40,671, simply based on their location. alldayPA, alldaypa.co.uk

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY UP £334M SINCE PRE-PANDEMIC New research highlights that the construction industry grew 6% in early spring 2021, meaning that new work and repair and maintenance is £334m above pre-pandemic levels. The research, conducted by specialist on-site storage company SiteStak, looked at the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics, alongside UK Government data, to discover the latest trends in building and construction.

In line with the growth, orders surged by over £1.2m in Q1 of 2021 compared to Q4 of 2020. This represents 12.2%, which also supports an increase in sales of SiteStak’s storage management system which is up around 45%.

Of all UK new builds, 79% represent housing, which is the highest figure since 2000. Of this number, London is also seeing an 11% increase in housing builds since 2019. Further investigation into search data not only backs this figure but is encouraging for the industry, with the term ‘new build’ seeing increased interest over the last two years and searches for ‘new builds near me’ more than doubling between April 2020 and April 2021 (14,800 vs 33,100).

Although house builds are massively on the up, new infrastructure is leading the way across the construction industry as we’ve entered 2021, with high-grossing projects such as Euston HS2, HS2 Northolt Tunnels and HS2 Chiltern and Colne Valley all ones to watch this year.

ince acquiring its first Mobile Training and Demonstration Unit in 2017, Aico has expanded its fleet to four bespoke units that cover the length and breadth of the country. Aico takes its Mobile Units on tour, travelling to various locations throughout the country to raise awareness in support of key campaigns such as Gas Safety Week, highlighting the dangers of carbon monoxide and the importance of alarms. Each of the units are fully equipped for hands-on training, providing customers with a complete overview of Aico’s products and technologies and enables the delivery of its award-winning Expert Installer training.

After having the breaks on for the past 16 months, Aico’s state-of-the-art Mobile Training and Demonstration Units are now back out on the road. Daren Newcombe of Plymouth Community Homes, that utilised the Mobile Unit on Tuesday 15 June, said: “We have specified and installed Aico alarms for the past 15 years and this is the third time we have had the Mobile Unit; this is an excellent opportunity for our engineers. We always receive first class support from Steve Bulley who is our local Regional Specification Manager (RSM), who has extensive knowledge and is always there when we need him.”

CONTRACT NEWS J S WRIGHT SECURES £9.5M-PLUS CONTRACT FOR HOCKLEY MILLS Mechanical and electrical building services specialist, J S Wright, has secured a contract valued at more than £9.5 million for the prestigious Hockley Mills development in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The Birmingham-based contractor will design and build the M&E services for all 395 apartments at the £105 million mixed-use scheme on Pitsford Street for developer Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures Limited.

J S Wright will provide a range of services for the build to rent apartments that are being constructed in six new buildings on the former brownfield site. The one to three-bed apartments are part of a project to build a total of eight highly distinct buildings, including retail, leisure and office space, that reflect the unique heritage and architecture of the Jewellery Quarter.

The electrical works will involve the design and installation of the low voltage switch room including the switchboards for powering the apartments and landlord areas. The commission will also include providing apartment lighting and external lighting systems, access control and CCTV equipment, domestic fire alarms, lightning protection and electric vehicle charging points. An IT system for landlord property management will also be installed by the company as part of the electrical package.

ECO UK GROUP INSTALLS M&E PACKAGE AT HEATHROW AIRPORT’S EXPRESS CENTRE

John Wright Electrical and Mechanical Services was recently involved in the Conisbrough Castle Illumination project – a project with Doncaster Council and English Heritage to light up Conisbrough Castle.

The Castle is a 12th Century Norman castle, now a picturesque ruin for people to visit. It was given by William the Conqueror to William de Warenne as part of the lordship that was bestowed upon him.

The project was an external lighting scheme that showcases the beauty of the structure, even when the rest of the world is bathed in darkness.

This is the first time that this has been done in 25 years. Using an LED lighting system, the site was bathed in light from dusk until dawn, and will continue to be so from now onwards.

Eco UK Group was recently awarded a contract to collaborate on a project at the UK’s only Express Centre based at Heathrow Airport.

This project involved the relocation of the Express Centre to a neighbouring building at Heathrow Airport.

Work included the provision and installation of state-of-the-art wall mounted commercial air conditioning units, reconfiguration of the existing ventilation and mechanical pipework services (HVAC).

The company was also responsible for the provision of power supplies to a vast amount of the facility areas and business critical equipment, such as display screens, drivers’ kiosks, weigh scales, metal detectors and turnstiles, X-ray machines, a baggage conveyor system, caster deck and lifts and overdoor heaters.

The company also installed energy efficient LEDs into the Express Centre to replace the existing inefficient fittings in order to deliver the desired lux levels throughout the facility.

It included the provision of both external LED linear lighting and replacement LED floodlights above the dock doors. Internally, the team supplied and installed a selection of industrial and office smart lighting solutions such as LED high bay warehouse lighting, LED panel lights and LED linear batten light fittings. Most of the lighting is controlled via PIR sensor technology and local key switch control for the emergency lighting.

DESIGNERS APPOINTED FOR NEW LEEDS HOSPITALS Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has appointed BDP to lead the architectural design of its Hospitals of the Future programme, as part of its long-term vision to transform healthcare facilities for patients and staff in Leeds and the wider region.

BDP was named as the preferred bidder, following an international design competition process, for a new state-of-the-art adults’ hospital and a new home for Leeds Children’s Hospital.

BDP’s first design concepts propose a circular hospital structure that is shaped like the contours of the Yorkshire fells and dales, with a large island garden and play deck at its centre.

The Trust has also appointed WSP as its civil and structural designer to work on the project, along with Ove Arup as the client civil and structural technical advisor. WSP has also been appointed as the mechanical and electrical designer, providing specialist net zero/sustainability and digital design advice. Mott MacDonald has been appointed as the client mechanical and electrical technical adviser, also providing sustainability and digital advice.

The Trust hopes to build the new hospitals by 2026.

CONTRACT NEWS BALFOUR BEATTY SET TO DELIVER UK’S LARGEST COVID-19 TESTING LABORATORY Balfour Beatty has secured a contract to deliver the new COVID-19 testing laboratory in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, on behalf of NHS Test and Trace.

Balfour Beatty is constructing the new 225,000 foot-square ‘Rosalind Franklin Laboratory’ which is now open and on completion will add hundreds of thousands of tests to the UK’s daily COVID-19 testing capacity.

Works include the construction of a series of laboratory ‘lines’ within the facility as well as the associated welfare and waste management facilities to support these essential operations, with Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick providing the associated mechanical and electrical works for the new testing facility.

The laboratory is being built in a modular approach to enable test processing capacity to increase whilst construction continues.

Having successfully completed the in-house laboratory at the Manchester Engineering Campus Development and the temporary NHS Louisa Jordan Hospital in Glasgow, Balfour Beatty will utilise its knowledge and expertise to safely and considerately deliver this innovative, cutting-edge laboratory.

Works are already underway, with completion expected in later this year. At peak construction, the company will employ a workforce of approximately 600.

NISSAN UNVEILS £1BN EV HUB Nissan has unveiled Nissan EV36Zero – a £1 billion flagship electric vehicle (EV) hub creating a world-first EV manufacturing ecosystem.

Centred around the record-breaking plant in Sunderland, Nissan EV36Zero will supercharge the company’s drive to carbon neutrality and establish a new 360-degree solution for zero-emission motoring.

Comprised of three interconnected initiatives, Nissan EV36Zero brings together electric vehicles, renewable energy and battery production, setting a blueprint for the future of the automotive industry.

Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer, Ashwani Gupta, says: “This is a landmark day for Nissan, our partners, the UK and the automotive industry as a whole.

Envision AESC, the battery arm of global green tech company Envision Group, will deploy integrated AIoT smart technology to monitor and optimise energy consumption, manufacturing and maintenance at its new gigafactory, enabling it to rapidly increase production and provide batteries to power up to 100,000 Nissan electric vehicles a year.

As part of the £1 billion announcement, Nissan will invest up to £423 million to produce a new-generation all-electric vehicle in the UK.

SURESERVE WINS CONTRACT WITH SOCIAL HOUSING CLIENT Sureserve Group has announced that two of its gas businesses, K&T Heating Services working in London and the South East, and Aaron Services working in East England and the Midlands, have successfully secured a long-term gas servicing, repair, installation and electrical testing contract with a new client, PA Housing.

The contract term is capped at eight years, commencing on 1 August 2021, and is expected to generate a combined sales revenue of £36 million over the entirety of the contract term. PA Housing is a large registered provider of social housing that owns and manages more than 23,000 homes across the Midlands, London and South East.

SPIE AWARDED LOW VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION CONTRACT FOR BIOGAS FACILITY SPIE UK has been awarded a new contract for the design, supply and installation of the main low voltage (LV) distribution for the site electrical supplies to the gas upgrading equipment and site communications for CNG Service’s biomethane to grid scheme at Sterling Pharma Solutions’ Cramlington site.

SPIE UK will be completing the detailed electrical design for the LV distribution, procuring the LV distribution equipment, and conducting the cabling, installation and testing of the LV power system.

The SPIE UK team will be challenged to work under tight space constraints, given the size of the site, requiring close collaboration with the other contractors to ensure a commitment to safety and that the work is completed to the five-week deadline. This scheme is due to complete in October 2021.

However, ensuring your new hire is the right cultural fit for your business is key. n every business, culture is key.

It sets the precedent for the way you work, and, with 90% of UK employers saying candidates need to have the right cultural fit, it’s clear it should be a key part of the recruitment process too. Your new recruits need to integrate well into your existing culture to help your business continue to grow.

Have you ever hired someone who had the right experience and training, but eventually found that something wasn’t quite right? Although 87% of employers offer inductions for new team members on business culture, occasionally the team member simply isn’t aligned with it.

In small electrical teams, culture is key because employees often work closely together on a daily basis. Your team needs to get on well, so they can do their job properly, as this enables open communication and successful teamwork – key components for any electrical project.

Your culture also impacts your service to customers, which needs to be consistent, no matter which team member is doing the work.

Hiring for cultural fit is about bringing people into the team who will fit in well with your current culture and adopt your core values and overall behaviours that give your business its own personality. It’s not about hiring people who are identical to one another – it means expanding your team with people who can bring a positive influence and something new to compliment your already established team.

For example, if your current team is made up of young people, and you’re interviewing an older candidate who is returning to work after retraining in electrics, you may think they will struggle to fit into your current culture. However, this candidate may be able to bring lots of knowledge and general life and work experience, which could make a significant difference to your business.

Just because a candidate doesn’t ‘look’ like other members of the team, doesn’t mean they won’t fit in with your culture.

Key characteristics to look out for Every electrical business’ culture is different, so the strategy behind hiring for cultural fit varies. However, there are some key characteristics to look out for to see if someone is the right fit for your growing business: • Investment in growth – is the candidate taking clear steps to develop on their career path? Perhaps they have recently completed further electrical training, or maybe they have recently retrained as an electrician through a traineeship and funded their own training. Ask the candidate about how they see their career progressing, and what they are doing to reach their goals. This will help you to determine whether they’re motivated and committed to personal growth.

• Willingness to learn – are they eager to develop existing skills and learn new ones? You could ask the candidate about the kind of training and support they may value if you were to hire them. If they show interest in building their skillset, they are likely to make a committed team member. This is particularly important as electrical guidelines and standards continue to evolve.

• Interest in the trade – does the candidate see the job as simply a way earn money, or are they genuinely enthusiastic about electrics? Ask them why they are interested in electrics, and why they chose to take this particular career path.

• Understanding of your current culture – share your current culture with your candidates and give them the opportunity to show an understanding of this, perhaps by asking them to share stories of times they have embodied a particular value.

Experience vs willingness When hiring, try to look beyond experience alone. A lack of experience doesn’t equal a lack of willingness to learn, or inability to fit in with your business culture.

For example, imagine you’re choosing between Candidate A and Candidate B, and your culture is all about collaborative working. Candidate A has plenty of experience, but enjoys working alone.

Candidate B has only just finished their initial centre-led training and is working towards achieving their NVQ Level 3 Electrical Training qualification, but is very willing to learn and enjoys team working.

In this situation, Candidate B is likely the best option for your business, as they will easily fit into the culture of teamworking, and they are showing clear commitment to learn and grow by investing in their own electrical training.

Fundamentally, previous experience is a crucial part of the hiring process, but eagerness to learn and the right cultural fit shouldn’t be overlooked, as these will often prove to be more valuable in the long-term.

ith its remote location, sitting on a hillside above a creek feeding the river Dart and surrounded by dense woodland, this stunning rural property in Dartmouth certainly provides a tranquil retreat.

The downside of its secluded setting, however, is the difficulty acquiring signals for TV, satellite and internet connections.

This means that any systems requiring internet are working over site-wide Wi-Fi/mesh networks with multiple Wi-Fi access points operating on 3 or 4G, and there is no hard-wired data connection to any of the devices.

These were the challenges facing the electrical contractor when the property owners decided to update the security and door entry provision for the extensive premises.

Having had a CCTV system on a previous site, the owners wanted the benefits of having the property protected but did not want the cable infrastructure that CCTV requires installed throughout the property.

They were looking for a more cost-effective alternative that would provide similar or enhanced features. At the same time, the intercom system on the entrance gate was old and had become inoperable and needed repairing or replacing with a system that would offer remote/wireless control.

Martyn Walley, managing director of Hide, the electrical contracting firm hired to undertake the security installation, looked to his experience working with ESP security products to provide the solutions that would overcome the client’s issues.

ESP’s GuardCam Deco was recommended

by Martyn to provide the general security provision covering the various areas of the property. Four of the systems have been installed to cover the garage, patio/decking area, driveway entrance and the entrance to the boat workshop.

GuardCam Deco is a combined Wi-Fi security camera and LED floodlight system, which has been designed with ease of set up as a key feature, including the option for remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet, using the specially developed ESP Smart app.

GuardCam Deco has the option to deliver motion activation notifications via the app whilst recording the activation. The user-friendly app also allows recordings to be accessed.

With a built-in camera that offers full 1080p HD live viewing and recording, the GuardCam Deco was the perfect all-in-one solution for these premises.

On approaching the unit, GuardCam Deco detects an intruder with proven PIR technology at a distance of up to 10 metres from the unit. It floodlights the area, initiates a video recording and provides the user with an option to deliver a two-way audio message or activate the inbuilt alarm warning.

It features an adjustable 16W high-intensity LED Security Lamp (3000k colour light and 800 lumen) and you can remotely dim or turn on/off the LED lamp via the app.

It was during the initial site visit to assess the security requirements that Martyn identified a number of opportunities where products from other Scolmore Group companies could provide a solution. As a result, three Ovia 10W LED Pathfinder floodlights were chosen to provide ambient lighting to the bordering woodland on the Creek Valley, gently illuminating the backdrop from the raised balcony outlook.

Martyn has used products from Scolmore’s Click Smart+ smart product range to do the switching of the Ovia floodlights remotely from the owner’s mobile phone. In addition, an Ovia 20W LED Pathfinder floodlight with PIR sensor is providing security lighting to the detached single garage on the approach driveway and this has replaced the original failed halogen floodlight.

Another has been installed as a direct replacement to a standard two-gang socket which had been incorrectly installed in an external location by the previous owner of the property – ensuring compliance with the latest British Standard requirements.

LED IS LIGHTING THE WAY FORWARD ECN spoke to Russell Vanstone, Product Development Manager at Knightsbridge, to get his view of where LED lighting is going and what to look out for in the future.

ECN: Does LED lighting now rule the roost?

RV: It would be hard to argue against the assertion that LED lighting is now the predominant lighting source for UK residential, retail and commercial applications. Industry researcher IBISWorld estimates that sales for LED products and ancillaries will reach £2.4 billion this year. That’s a lot of LED lamps flying off the shelves!

While other mainstream lighting sources have fallen by the wayside, the LED world has grown and grown. There’s probably not a house, office or retail shop in the UK that doesn’t have LED lamps installed somewhere. In fact according to findings from German electrical magazine, Reichelt, 73% of UK consumers are already reaping the benefits of using LED lamps in their home, with 17% of respondents having already switched to LED lights completely.

ECN: Why do you think that is?

RV: There are many reasons behind LED’s success – one of the most influential being the vastly improved lumen output over the last couple of years. Couple this with the ability to put LEDs into almost any kind of light fitting, making them extremely flexible and versatile, and you have the almost perfect lighting solution.

can have when positioned and installed correctly. The colour rendering, the efficacy, the energy-saving nature, all contribute to the increasing adoption of LEDs across home, business and retail.

ECN: So, what next for LEDs? RV: I think that one of the challenges is bringing greater utility to LED lighting products. By that I mean increasing a product’s functionality, its ease of installation, even its economy of stocking for wholesalers, that’s to say a ‘one product, numerous solutions’ approach that allows inventory to be kept to the minimum, while offering the buyer a product that meets a variety of needs.

For instance, let’s take an LED downlight. Currently, an installer will invariably choose a product that offers a fixed performance in terms of watts, lumens, colour render and, once installed, that’s it. The scope for changing how that installation works is limited to removing the downlighter and installing another one with different performance characteristics.

That’s just more time and cost. Now imagine a scenario where the installer could effectively ‘dial in’ the characteristics from wattage (lumen output) to CCT prior to the installation and then change it at a later date, should the need arise. Make the connector system one that can be plugged in or unplugged very easily to facilitate removal of the unit and you now have a downlighter that really adds value.

Now the next challenge is to maximise the installation opportunity for your ‘next generation’ downlight by making it super compliant, whatever the situation or application. Make it Fire Rated for solid timber, web joist or I-joist configurations

and then throw in an IP65 rating so it can sit happily in bathrooms, wet rooms or wherever moisture is prevalent.

You can begin to see the huge benefits of such a product. Then the finishing touch would be to offer different style bezels to suit the colourway of the room or installation in question. Again, these could be changed at a later date to suit any refurbishment or redecoration. It really is lighting the way you want it.

ECN: So, is that that something the trade can look forward to soon?

RV: Yes, indeed it is. Our own take on this is called the Spektro LED, which is something we are very excited about. It addresses the points I have mentioned previously, and we believe that installers, and homeowners, will reap the benefits offered by this new, exciting LED downlight.

OFF TO A FLYING START The AX’s doors and mounting plates are simply added to the delivery package and are quick to machine using the Rittal Perforex BC

Meurer-etechnik is looking to the new AX compact enclosure from Rittal to improve its production efficiency. How does the new model differ from its predecessor, the AE? A day spent with enclosure production staff reveals all.

A

new working day dawns at Murer-etechnik in Germany’s Westerwald region. In the incoming goods section, a young man wearing a black T-shirt with the company logo on the front and the sleeve is taking delivery of a

pallet with eight AX compact enclosures from Rittal. Production Manager, Steven Lauer, is already waiting for their arrival.

In just a week’s time, the UL-compliant enclosures are set to be delivered to a special-purpose machinery manufacturer based in the Cologne area. Steven can’t wait to see how the new AX enclosures differ from the predecessor model, the AE.

Let’s get started,” he says. Steven has assigned the task of fitting out the AX enclosures to three of the plant electricians. One of them is already clamping the first enclosure door into the Perforex CNC machining centre. The mounting plates are next. Progress is rapid, because the doors and mounting plates are simply added to the delivery package

UPS & POWER MANAGEMENT and staff don’t have the hassle of first detaching them from the enclosure, as is normally the case. Using the digital twin’s manufacturing data from Eplan Pro Panel, the machine cuts all the necessary holes in double-quick time. “That part is the most fun,” says Steven, who is standing casually at the machine’s operator terminal.

“There are hardly any questions to deal with and you can see the results straight away,” he adds. It’s now time for pre-assembly, configuration and wiring. A fully automatic wire processing machine has already produced the necessary cable harnesses – also using data from the design engineering department. In this way, Meurer-etechnik is gradually implementing ‘enclosure manufacturing 4.0’.

Steven indicates an area in the rear part of the light-filled factory building to three members of staff, who lift the compact enclosures onto small metal trestles.

Next to each of the plant electricians is a trolley with tools and a number of boxes containing electronic components. The enclosures are now lying on their backs with the doors fitted. Beside them are the mounting plates, to which the men next attach the mounting rails and cable ducts. Contactors, terminals, inverters and similar components are then installed.

During this configuration process, the electricians regularly consult their tablets to compare their work with the 3D model.

Next comes the wiring. Last but not least, the fully wired mounting plate is fitted into the enclosures.

Steven has been with Meureretechnik for 10 years. Back when he was an apprentice, he still had to learn how to position each hole manually.

“The technology has come a long way since then,” he says before asking his colleagues the following question: “So, what’s different about the AX?” The answer: “It feels like there’s more room on the gland plate.” And there is indeed 30% more space for inserting cables. “That’s a huge advantage,” insists Steven, because digitalisation is continuously increasing the

number of components in the enclosure and thus also the number of cables that need to be routed inside via the gland plate.

He also takes a closer look at the interior wall of the compact enclosure. “There always used to be problems with the interior fit-out, because there weren’t enough options for fitting the depth stays. That has now changed,” he notes. Being able to install the rails at a variety of heights makes the process of designing the levels more flexible. Steven points to a grey box on one of the trolleys. There are now only three cable

harnesses left in it. “Once the box with the cables starts looking empty, I know we’re on the finishing straight,” he says.

There were no errors during testing, and the enclosures for the special-purpose machinery manufacturer were even ready half a day ahead of schedule. “You’re happy if, when you get to the end of the day, there’s no danger of failing to meet the delivery deadline and the quality is as it should be,” says a delighted Steven.

oes a business model built on a single manufacturer’s catalogue work for the manufacturer or for you in the new world of smart home control? If you really want to be a winner, it’s clearly you that should be in control.

People want much more in their homes and workplace – they want to integrate heating and cooling, shading and energy control and entertainment with security.

They don’t want them installed separately.

So, given that a globally-proven, robust open-source automation platform that makes bringing it all together easily exists, and hundreds of manufacturers produce compatible products that are available from forward-thinking UK wholesalers, why wouldn’t you put yourself in the driving seat? The open control platform that allows all these products to talk to each other and work together is KNX, and you can master the software that brings your choice together for a custom installation in a week at a UK training centre.

During the weird year of lockdown and tiers, KNX has gone from strength to strength. It celebrated its 30th birthday as the de facto global open control protocol and Sony took its count of manufacturer members past the 500 mark. Yes, that’s 500 manufacturers making controls that are guaranteed to work together, guaranteed to be backwards compatible, and guaranteed to enable you to broaden your horizons by designing interworking between applications controlling every aspect of home control. The real value added in automation comes from the quality of a systems integrator’s thinking, and the combination of skill and talent that creates scalable, flexible solutions that meet customer expectations and – above all – are just reliable.

People want much more in their homes and workplace

So, don’t limit yourself by starting with a proprietary control system that only controls one or two aspects of building control. Instead, leapfrog straight to an open protocol platform that offers the control of the majority of the building’s requirements. You can still add your favourite proprietary control for, say, AV on top, using gateway devices.

The big risk with relying on proprietary solutions is that they might require you to update an installation’s central controller when a new range of keypads is released. Meanwhile, with a KNX-based system and KNX-certified products, a systems integrator would have simply programmed the new keypad design into the existing system, made a quick physical swap onsite, and then sat back and continue to enjoy an amicable and profitable long-term relationship with the customer.

There are KNX devices and solutions for every application – it may be lighting control with Theben DALI Gateways, BMS integration with the ABB application control or visualisation and remote access with the Gira X1/S1 combo. But that’s not to say you have to ditch your favourite systems or familiar products because, for the most part, the proprietary players have already made the KNX choice for you. They have created the gateways that let the magic happen. Control4 and Savant both offer a native IP connection to KNX, simplifying the integration of KNX lighting and comfort, with audio and video entertainment for homes around the world. Crestron has an IP to KNX gateway, a bi-directional Ethernet interface capable of addressing up to 250 KNX objects, while even Lutron can be interfaced using third party software.

Sonos, Apple Homekit, Siri, Alexa and Google Home are all able to either control or be integrated with a KNX system.

KNX integrators in the UK have been delivering high end projects in the UK market for many years. The KNX ETS programming software is continually evolving and its underlying stability is the real strength of KNX – you are investing time and energy in a platform that you will be able to use to consistently deliver projects with lifecycles extending into decades. KNX UK Association members are now maintaining and expanding systems they installed 15 years ago, adding more sophisticated security devices, for instance, or building in the whole new approach to entertainment that has evolved since the CDs that were prevalent when their system was first designed.

Not all updates need to be done at once. Projects can be phased, or evolved as lifestyles change – children may leave home or older lifestyles begin to call for automated help with assisted living. All of this can be catered for with the cross-application flexibility of KNX without having to go back to the drawing board. As KNX is a system with distributed intelligence, there’s no high-risk central point of failure and new devices can simply be attached to the nearest node, a switch or sensor perhaps. Changing a KNX system is not disruptive – the customer will hardly know you’ve been there.

Big or small, commercial or residential, simple or complex, there will always be a KNX solution that makes sense. Don’t let the proprietary systems fool you – why be good at one or two things for the length of the project when you can be good at many things for the whole, decades-long life of the installation?

Deployment made easy with dashboards The IoT Connector enables the visualisation and analysis of data collected by maintenance-free sensors in customer-built dashboards and is available as a Docker Container Image, which is a file consisting of multiple layers that is used to execute applications in a Docker container.

In the typical model, the IoT Connector is deployed in an existing connectivity infrastructure: either in edge devices or third-party clouds. Typical use cases are centralised controls such as lighting and building automation. With the new model, the data is processed directly at the final destination like a cloud or server from the customer. For example, this could be Microsoft Azure cloud. Typical use cases are data analytics and IoT applications and the major advantage is that the client has total control over the data flow. With this new model there is no third party or third storage location involved when transferring the data from sensor to cloud. Customers decide what happens with their data, whether visualised, analysed or archived.

An easy and cost-effective way to incorporate the EnOcean IoT Connector into IoT applications is by leveraging existing building infrastructures. The infrastructure can easily be upgraded to send EnOcean IoT data, for example, with an EnOcean USB stick that is put into a Wi-Fi access point from Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company. Also, data from existing EnOcean buildings can directly be forwarded to the IoT Connector in raw format (ESP3 – EnOcean Serial Protocol 3). These access points support the EnOcean USB stick without need for additional software. The Aruba access points talk directly to the IoT Connector running as part of the infrastructure or the final data destination, so no additional gateways are needed. With this complete scenario, customers have exclusive control over the data flow.

The GTC 600 C Professional also now features an extended list of emissivity values. More than 30 different materials are stored. If, for example, tiles has been selected as material, the device considers the emissivity of this surface, i.e. its heat radiation, during the infrared measurement. The surface temperature is therefore determined more precisely. In addition, professionals can save the five most important materials individually and have fast access to them. This function distinguishes the GTC 600 C Professional from its competitor models.

MAXIMISING THE BENEFITS OF A FIBRE-OPTIC INSTALLATION With a high speed broadband connection of ever-increasing importance – especially in light of the pandemic – BT OpenReach is looking to roll out FTTP (Fibre-to-the-Premises) connections across the UK. However, with the ‘last-mile’ of copper cabling from the cabinet to the property still in place, the speed and stability of the new connection is curtailed. Paul Churm, Telecommunications Specialist at REHAU, talks through how contractors can maximise the benefits of a new fibre-optic installation.

he pandemic has brought about somewhat of a sea change in the way we view connectivity, with the challenges posed by the past year rendering our appetite for data greater than ever. This is perhaps most true of the nation’s businesses, with a 2021 Statista report indicating that 82% of businesses used the internet for banking in the past year. Moreover, 59% required the internet to operate social media pages and accounts, while 58% used it to store customers’ personal information. As such, it is clear that a high speed internet connection can no longer be considered a luxury – but rather a necessity.

Limitations of Infrastructure With a gigabit-capable connection becoming an increasingly attractive feature for any premises to have, many property developers and businesses are looking to ensure that premises come equipped with fibre-optic broadband as standard. While this is certainly a positive sign for the nation’s connectivity goals, it is important to first consider the limitations of current infrastructure before undertaking new installations.

At present, the UK is largely equipped with antiquated, copper-based wiring. This type of infrastructure is designed for landline phone connections and cable television, and is growing increasingly ill-suited for the nation’s connectivity needs. As such, BT OpenReach is looking to phase out its copper network by 2025 in favour of the ‘Fibre First’ programme. This initiative will see FTTP connections rolled out to an additional 551 cities and towns across the UK, in an effort to satiate the nation’s growing thirst for data.

However, it should be noted that if fibre-optic installations are completed using an external distribution point such as a toby box, the effectiveness of the connection may be limited. This is owing to the fact that the external cabinet is most often linked up to the house connection by way of existing infrastructure that is

already in place. This so called ‘last mile’ of copper cabling is not designed with high speed internet in mind, and so can have a substantial negative effect of prospective broadband speeds.

Enabling high speed connections A fibre-optic connection is only as strong as its weakest link. As such, if contractors want to maximise its benefits, they should ensure that the ‘last mile’ of infrastructure is future-proofed for high speed fibre-optic cabling before undertaking an installation.

For electrical contractors, this can be done by fitting microducts within the premises, allowing optical fibres to be blown all the way into the property and enabling a true FTTP connection.

Moreover, with many businesses now demanding more sophisticated broadband set-ups such as FTTD (Fibre-to-the-Desk), the installation of microducts allows scope for a number of complex arrangements to be introduced in future. Traditionally, fibre arrangements in commercial properties have made use of an ONU (Optical Network Unit) within the property to do this, splicing the cable between multiple devices.

However, the installation of microducts in an FTTD set-up allows each workstation to benefit from its own connection, with speeds of up to 10Gbits/s. This can have a major effect on a property’s valuation, which contractors should consider when specifying solutions for developers.

However, the quality of the microduct solution employed should be a key consideration before beginning any installation.

Low calibre products can provide sub-optimal conditions for the blowing-in process, while even presenting a health and safety risk in the event of a fire. To ensure that microduct fittings do not fall foul of legislation, contractors should opt for only trusted solutions.

A high speed internet connection can no longer be considered a luxury

When undertaking a new installation, it is critical that electrical ducts meet British Standard (BS) EN61386, as specified in the criteria set out by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

BS EN61386 specifies that a system’s installation must not interfere with the property’s occupational or fire safety.

Moreover, cabling must not present an additional hazard in the event of a fire.

Certain low quality cables are made with halogens, meaning that they produce harmful gases during combustion. This has the potential to exacerbate the blaze, or even cause direct harm to the occupant.

As such, by opting for cables and ducts that adhere to BS EN61386, contractors can guarantee the safety of their installation at no extra effort. High quality solutions like REHAU’s RAUSPEED Inhouse micro ducts, are halogen-free and produce minimal smoke during combustion, in accordance with BS EN 61034-2 regulations regarding smoke density. Their self-extinguishing nature ensures additional compliance with BS EN 61386-1, meaning that the spread of a potential fire is significantly limited.

A fibre-optic installation can introduce a host of benefits to any property, but it is vital that adequate infrastructure is in place if contractors want to maximise its effectiveness. Yet Wrexham Mineral Cables (WMC) Commercial Manager, Steve Williams, explains why all hazards need to be put under the spotlight to make way for a safer future.

I

n the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, building safety has rarely been out of the headlines.

The fire at New Providence Wharf in London was another reminder of why occupant safety needs to be a priority throughout the life cycle of a building.

London Fire Brigade’s initial findings showed that a serious failure of a vital safety systems resulted in the building acting like a ‘broken chimney’, leaving residents’ only escape route smoke logged. London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner Richard Mills commented: “The New Providence Wharf fire needs to be an urgent wake-up call to all building owners and managers. Look at the fire safety solutions inside your building and take action if they are not performing correctly. It is too late to wait for a fire to see if they work.”

Three years after Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, the government has sought to introduce legislation to address safety concerns. And in publishing the Building Safety Bill last month, it highlights a commitment to create a lasting, generational change.

The bill has been designed to tackle bad practice head on and will ensure high standards of safety for people’s homes, in particular for high rise buildings. In addition, a new regulator will provide essential oversight at every stage of a building’s lifecycle, holding those in charge accountable for any mistakes, with tougher sanctions for those that fail to meet their obligations.

Greater accountability The changes will have an impact on almost everybody in the supply chain. And the overriding message is that in order to make buildings safer for the people who live and work in them, we must embrace a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Yet we can only truly make buildings safe by identifying all possible hazards. To date, the focus has been largely on identified defects.

But it is the unidentified issues – such as the installation of inferior fire-resistant cables – which, WMC believes, need to be put under the spotlight.

It has also become clear that steps need to be taken to ensure the tests to which construction products are subjected to are relevant and can be relied upon. This is particularly important for specifiers and designers with whom the responsibility of product specification lies. How can they be held accountable if products cannot be relied upon and do not perform as marketed?

Higher classification Should a fire break out, fire-resistant cables play a fundamental role in ensuring that emergency and building critical systems – including emergency lighting, extraction systems, emergency generators and fire alarms – are supported, providing vital time for the safe passage of occupants out of the building, and allowing for shutdown procedures to take place.

In order to meet the requirements of a fire-resistant cable, they must meet the British Standard appropriate to their type of fire-resistant cable. There are several references for fire performance on cables including BS 50200, BS8434, BS8519 and BS6387.

However, as we all know, fire is a dynamic force that moves, expands, and changes the shape, size, and properties of all it comes into contact with. As a manufacturer of fire-resistant cables, WMC has been calling for more stringent testing standards for years. The company believes there needs to be a single test for enhanced fire-resistant cables. Regardless of size or construction, if a cable is required to function in the event of a fire, each cable sample must have to pass a true fire scenario test.

Due to its unique construction, no polymers or plastics are used to aid fire protection on Mineral Insulated Copper Cable (MICC). This means over 85% of the entire MICC range fall in the under 20mm category.

Currently, only fire-resistant cables that are greater in diameter than 20mm must undergo testing for direct impacts to reflect falling debris and water testing on a single test sample. For fire resistant cables under 20mm, no direct impact testing takes place and different stages of each test are carried out on different samples of cable.

The government has sought to introduce legislation to address safety concerns

As the call for mandatory sprinkler systems in taller buildings gathers momentum, it becomes even more concerning that smaller fire-resistant cables may not survive fire, water, and direct impact.

This has resulted in too many cables being classed as fire resistant, but that would not be adequate in the event of a fire, as the tests do not represent real world conditions. WMC strongly believes there should be a higher classification of cables introduced to help specifiers and designers identify those which can survive, rather than simply resist fire.

A new was standard introduced in the wake of Grenfell. BS8629:2019 states enhanced fire-resistant cables must be placed in costly fire-proof conduits unless its construction is armoured or made from MICC. These very cables not only don’t perform like a fire survival cable, but they are more expensive with fire resistant conduits and take longer to install. The recommendations in BS8629:2019 have clearly got many experts asking what was recognised in BS8629 that is considered not applicable for any other type of fire-resistant cable standard such as BS 5839, BS 8434-2, BS EN 50200 & BS 6387 CWZ. In an era of greater accountability, there should be no compromise, and as an industry we can no longer aim for minimum compliance to get the job done.

hreaded rod and strut has been a trusted method of cable management suspension for decades and provided a reliable solution for most projects.

uilding resilience into power distribution networks is important in any commercial environment. It could involve measures as simple as installing cleaners’ hives to ensure essential equipment is not inadvertently unplugged when the cleaner plugs in the vacuum, it should always involve circuit protection and it can sometimes be wise to limit the number of workstations dependent on a single circuit to prevent nuisance tripping. At the current electrical fit out of the new Gwent Police headquarters in Cwmbran, all of these strategies have formed part of the specification using CMD Betatrak powertrack and Power Hub distribution systems to aid both speed of installation and resilience.

A 21st Century police HQ

The new building will occupy around half the footprint of the existing HQ

The new 5,178m2 headquarters in Cwmbran will replace the current Gwent Police HQ in nearby Croesyceiliog and will accommodate 480 officers and staff. The new building will occupy around half the footprint of the existing HQ and has been designed to reduce running costs by more than £1m a year, while providing facilities that include the force’s control room for 999 and 101 calls, wellbeing and training accommodation, and a base for major crime teams, support services and senior management.

Delivered by electrical contractor, Highadmit Projects, the electrical fit out has been specified to ensure that any trips or outages on the electrical network affect as little of the building as possible to support 24/7 operational continuity and efficiency. The Power Hub system was specified by the M&E consultant in conjunction with the client, Monmouthshire County Council, in order to satisfy its electrical design criteria.

Combining speed with security of supply

Power Hub system The power distribution installation includes Auxiliary Earth 63A Betatrak powertrack, which connects to CMD’s Power Hub system. Power is then delivered to the workstation via CMD’s Elite+ under desk modules.

Simple to install and providing flexibility for office layouts and future adaptations, the CMD Power Hub system provides up to six power outputs from a single mains input. The system combines compact hub units with flexible metal conduits or ‘umbilicals’, which connect the hubs together to create the electrical distribution network in the floor void. The metal flexible conduits provide cables with mechanical and environmental protection, allowing compliance with Wiring Regulation 543.7 ‘Earthing requirements for the installation of equipment having high protective conductor currents’. They ensure a similar level of resilience to powertrack systems and delivering a low maintenance, fit and forget power distribution solution.

CMD’s Betatrak power distribution system has been installed to distribute the incoming supply on each storey and creates a central spine within the floor void and around 60, six-way CMD Power Hub Units have been installed on each storey to take power to the required locations. At installation, the requirement is for no more than 12 double sockets to be powered by each hub circuit, ensuring any outages are localised to enable the remainder of the building to operate as usual. Ample redundancy has been built into the system to enable further tap-offs to be installed as required, should occupancy rates or connectivity requirements change.

Each Power Hub will connect to a CMD Elite+ under desk workstation module via a CMD 20 Series fast-fit Floor Box and serve just two workstations, with cleaner’s hives installed for dedicated sockets for cleaning equipment. With circuit protection at the Betatrak, the Power Hub and the Elite+ workstation power module, any trips on the system will affect a limited number of workstations and devices in case of an electrical fault. For additional resilience, Highadmit Projects has also installed a UPS system for critical locations and a diesel generator capable of a week-long back-up.

Joined-up specification The combination of power distribution and workstation power systems from CMD has enabled a joined-up specification for the Gwent Police HQ at Cwmbran, which has the high levels of resilience required for a blue light environment, while enabling a fast-track installation programme. The electrical fit-out is due for completion in September 2021.

SCOLMORE ENTERS THE CONSUMER UNIT MARKET

OVIA’S FLAMEGUARD DOWNLIGHTS NOW WITH PUSH-FIT FLOW CONNECTORS Ovia is investing in the Flameguard range to further enhance its features.

Flameguard fire-rated downlights are supplied pre-wired with push-fit Flow connectors, which feature push-in, low maintenance terminals to offer more to installers.

Solus also features different mounting options that enhance its installation versatility; and because the product can accommodate a wide cable range, customers can stock small numbers of units to cover a wide range of cable sizes.
