ello and welcome to the February edition of ECN! I hope you’re settling into the new year nicely after what felt like the longest January in history! I’m happy to share some positive news with you this month. The UK Government has recently announced that it is making £190 million available to help industries transition to net zero and reduce manufacturing emissions by switching to cleaner, more affordable energy. The Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan competition has announced 12 winners, each of whom will receive up to £6 million to develop plans for a low carbon future. This funding will enable winning businesses and their partners to work together to reduce their emissions and learn from each other. They will also have access to technical advisors to help them adopt measures such as using hydrogen or carbon capture. The funding will be targeted at projects outside the UK’s major industrial areas, where companies in dispersed locations away from industrial heartlands account for 55% of the country’s industrial emissions.

In addition, the Government has launched a new Industrial Energy Transformation Fund, making a further £185 million available to help companies transform their operations and run on cleaner, more secure energy. The fund will support measures such as replacing inefficient equipment, installing electric furnaces, and switching to hydrogen. The aim is to support businesses in their transition to net zero in a sustainable, cost-effective way, while also creating green industrial jobs for the future. These plans are part of the Government’s commitment to spending more than £12 billion on energy efficiency by 2028, helping more households and businesses enjoy lower bills and cleaner energy. Initiatives like these can only help to inspire positive change in the industry and create a greener world for us all. INDUSTRY NEWS SAINSBURY’S LAUNCHES A NEW ULTRA-RAPID SERVICE Sainsbury’s has launched Smart Charge, a brand-new, dedicated EV charging business that will give drivers access to ultra-rapid EV charging points across its stores. In new research commissioned by Sainsbury’s, 80% of EV users admit to avoiding long journeys because of not wanting to charge at public EV charging stations, describing the main frustrations as chargers being broken, not enough charging bays and speed of service. Designed to mitigate these frustrations, Smart Charge will initially feature over 750 cutting-edge ultra-rapid charging bays rolled out across more than 100 stores by the end of 2024, putting Sainsbury’s in the top five providers of ultra-rapid charging in the UK. Ultra-rapid is the fastest type of EV charging currently available on the market, but 32% of EV drivers surveyed said they have yet to benefit from using it. Designed to be speedy, reliable and easy to use, Sainsbury’s 150kW Smart Charge bays allow users to fully charge their vehicle in as little as 30 minutes, providing enough power to travel up to 200 miles. Many of the chargers can also charge even faster if a driver’s vehicle battery accepts higher charger speeds, up to 300kW. Smart Charge is available at around 200 ultra-rapid charging bays at just over 20 Sainsbury’s locations. The charging technology and equipment are provided by Kempower. Kempower, kempower.com
NICEIC ENHANCES TRAINING PORTFOLIO WITH THE ADDITION OF EWA
LIA AND RECOLIGHT ANNOUNCE NET ZERO LIGHTING CONFERENCE
NICEIC has announced the addition of the Installation Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) to its training portfolio. This industry-approved pathway offers experienced electricians, who might not have completed an apprenticeship or secured a Level 3 vocational qualification (or equivalent), a formal means to validate their competence and industry experience. Candidates applying to undertake the Installation Electrician EWA must have at least five years of proven experience working as an electrician (excluding any time spent in training) and must hold a Level 2 electrical qualification. Acquiring the EWA and its endpoint assessment is recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to an industry apprenticeship, meeting the application criteria for electrical certification bodies such as NICEIC. Furthermore, the assessment meets the requirements for an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) gold card. As part of the process, candidates must compile a portfolio of work and undertake practical assessments. On completion of this phase, participants will be required to pass an AM2E assessment, which mirrors the AM2S assessment taken by apprentices at the end of their training.
The LIA and Recolight are collaborating on the Net Zero Lighting Conference 2024, taking place on 2 May in London. The agenda highlights net zero-focused manufacturing practices within the lighting industry, which covers strategy, materials, energy, packaging, and best practices, delivered by a variety of key players and experts in the industry. The conference emphasises the practical steps that lighting manufacturers can take to reduce the carbon emissions of all parts of their operations to contribute to the low carbon economy. The two organisations have come together to organise this conference in recognition of the vital importance of this topic to the industry, drawing upon their combined expertise. By joining forces on this issue, the LIA and Recolight will help members of both organisations and the wider industry as they seek to fully decarbonise. The lighting manufacturing industry is invited to join the companies at the Net Zero Lighting Conference 2024 for a day of learning and practical strategies to push the lighting industry towards a sustainable and an environmentally conscious future.

SKILLS SHORTAGE IN THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY UNDER SCRUTINY AT NEW EVENT A new event for the electrical industry will focus on skills, safety and solutions for the UK’s evolving electrical installations. As the UK heads towards a low-carbon future with increased electrification of its built environment, this must be delivered safely and professionally. Given the serious consequences of not having enough skilled, qualified and competent workers to deal with an increasingly electric future, there is an urgent need to attract new talent to the industry, as well as bridge a growing skills gap in the electrotechnical workforce. This topic will be just one of several key issues under discussion at the Electrical Installation Seminar on Tuesday 23 April, hosted by Electrical Safety First. With a theme of ‘Switch on to the big issues’, the seminar will also explore making people’s homes safer, putting the spotlight on the quality and consistency of EICRs (Electrical Inspection Condition Reporting). A rapid-fire session will feature presentations on emerging technologies and trends such as low carbon technologies (LCT) and prosumers electrical installation (PEI), and the importance of understanding safety considerations. Held at IET London on Savoy Place, the free half-day event brings together a range of industry actors including manufacturers, wholesalers, awarding bodies, electrical contractors, government representatives, insurers, housing associations, trade associations, certification bodies, and fire and rescue services.

INDUSTRY NEWS MENTAL HEALTH AND SILENT DISCRIMINATION IN CONSTRUCTION Over 700 construction workers die by suicide per year in the UK – equivalent to two construction workers every working day. Mental health is a common struggle within the construction industry due to a range of factors including long hours, straining work and financial issues. Colemans has investigated a range of aspects when it comes to mental health within the construction industry, including silent discrimination, which can be common due to the ‘banter’ typically occurring on site. Research shows that 21% of construction employees have experienced bullying in the last year, and almost three in 10 say the bullying was regarded as banter. There are some ways employers can help battle these issues and support employees: • Training and educating employees, including managers, on mental health and how to support those struggling. • Implementing mental health procedures in the workplace, such as employee wellness programs, mental health first aiders, and check-in sessions. Mark Coleman, Chief Executive at Colemans, says, “Having experienced difficulties with my own mental health, I know how difficult this complex issue is for any modern-day business to understand and get right.”
He says that at Colemans it started with cultural changes based around education, openness and understanding, where it is necessary to have team members who are empathetic, with high levels of emotional intelligence. “We are working hard to change our own organisation’s attitudes and behaviours, even now after 10 years, we are not there yet and I suppose we will never be perfect, making mistakes along the way. But as long as the culture, attitudes and behaviours are corrected as we go on, we will learn from our mistakes. FORMER GOVERNMENT MINISTERS SUPPORT SELECT’S CAMPAIGN
BT GROUP REPURPOSES STREET CABINET IN FIRST EV CHARGER PILOT
The groundswell of opinion in favour of the campaign for protection of title for electricians has continued into 2024 with a New Year declaration of support from another four prominent members of the Scottish Parliament. Former Business and Trade Minister, Ivan McKee, and ex-Transport Minister, Kevin Stewart, have both shown their backing for the regulation of the industry by signing up to the Wall of Support, spearheaded by SELECT. They have been joined by Conservative MSPs, Craig Hoy and Oliver Mundell, as the long-running campaign continues to attract cross-party support from all political factions. SELECT’s Managing Director, Alan Wilson says, “As we enter another year in our long-running campaign, it is particularly heartening to receive even more support from prominent parliamentarians, particularly those who have served in a ministerial capacity.” By putting their names on a virtual brick in the Wall, supporters are taking a public stance that underlines their backing for legislation in Holyrood, which would make it an offence for someone to call themselves an electrician when they have inadequate qualifications. As well as more than a third of MSPs, other bodies that have contributed a brick to the Wall include Unite the Union, Electrical Safety First, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Scottish Association of Landlords, the Specialist Engineering Contractors’ Group and the Energy Saving Trust.
Etc., the startup and digital incubation arm of BT Group, has announced powering up its first EV charging unit, built from a street cabinet traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling. The announcement marks the first step in the rollout of new technical trials, exploring the potential to upgrade up to 60,000 cabinets, helping to meet the UK Government’s sustainability targets by decarbonising the transport system. Developed to help solve EV charging infrastructure needs by repurposing existing street furniture, the pilots explore how this solution could be scaled to address the lack of chargers on UK roads. New BT Group research shows 38% would have an EV already if charging were less of an issue, and with only 53,000 public EV charge points currently on UK roads, the pilot marks an important step in the journey to net zero. Etc. has announced its first installation location in East Lothian, Scotland, with further pilots to roll out across the UK in the coming months. The charging solution works by retrofitting the cabinets with a device enabling renewable energy to be shared to a charge point, alongside the existing broadband service with no need to create a new power connection. EV charging can be deployed to cabinets that are in use for current copper broadband services, or those due for retirement, depending on the space and power available to the unit. Once the cabinet is no longer needed for broadband, as the nationwide full-fibre rollout progresses, the broadband equipment is recycled, and additional EV charge points can be added. This allows the reuse of existing infrastructure while deploying more charge points at pace.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR ROLE IN THE NEW SAFETY ACT AEI Cables is advising its customers not to underestimate the importance of cables, as part of the new Building Safety Act legislation requirements. The Act, introduced in October 2023, makes new requirements for ‘higher-risk buildings’, those deemed to be at least 18m in height or at least seven storeys, containing at least two residential units. The systems in these buildings powered by electrical cables – including smoke and heat extraction systems – assist fire services in firefighting and safe evacuation. Stuart Dover, General Manager of AEI Cables, says, “We are emphasising to our customers the important part played by the electrical systems and cables that power these systems as part of this new initiative. “We welcome the move to improve the safety of people and property, but we should be aware of our role as a major part of the supply chain. We are happy to provide guidance and support on these issues as demonstrating competence is also a requirement.” Under the terms of the Act, a Principal Accountable Person who fails to register an occupied higher-risk building ‘without a reasonable excuse’ will be liable to either a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years. The Building Safety Regulator oversees the safety and performance of all buildings, in addition to focusing on high-rise buildings. It will promote competence and organisational capability within the sector, including building control professionals and tradespeople. The National Construction Products Regulator will oversee a more effective construction products regulatory regime, leading and coordinating market surveillance and enforcement across the UK. The NRCP has already started taking enforcement action under the scope of existing regulations.

INDUSTRY NEWS CUSTOMER BEHAVIOUR CAUSES TRADESPEOPLE TO WALK AWAY According to research from Direct Line, 47% of tradespeople say they have walked away from a job due to a customer’s behaviour. The study revealed the average value of each job walked away from was £1,062. Four in 10 (41%) tradespeople report arguments with customers because of their behaviour, with the most common issue being late payment (62%). It is a key issue for the industry and can significantly impact cash flow, as tradespeople are owed an average of £6,984 in outstanding payments. Other reasons for arguments include customers trying to tell tradespeople how to do the job (57%) and customers adding additional jobs on top of what had already been agreed (39%). With 42% of Brits struggling to find a tradesperson to do work in their home, the survey also revealed the ‘red flags’ that cause professionals to decline some jobs. On average, tradespeople turn down five jobs a year due to ‘red flags’ they have identified. The most common ‘red flag’ was a customer telling them that they could get someone else to do the job for less (49%). This was closely followed by dictating how much a job should cost (47%) or how long it should take (41%), wanting to cut corners to reduce cost such as using cheap materials (45%), and asking for a discount with a sob story (43%). Alison Traboulsi, Product Manager at Direct Line business insurance, comments on the issue, “We’ve all had to manage challenging situations and people that have tested our patience. While tradespeople understand that often customers’ questions are about trying to understand a task that sits outside of their general knowledge, frequent questions and demands can make for a difficult working environment for tradespeople. It bodes well for
customers to remember that the person they’ve hired, or are looking to hire, is an expert in their field. A tradesperson relies on word of mouth and a good reputation so, ultimately, they want to make sure that they do a good job, on time and at a fair price for the work they’re doing.” Direct Line, directline.com
ECA AND FSA MEMBERS VOICE CONCERN OVER APPRENTICESHIP CUTS Over 60 employers from across Wales, including several ECA and FSA Members, have joined together to call for funding for the Welsh Government’s flagship apprenticeship programme to be protected, to ensure the economic prosperity of Wales. In an open letter, employers say that cuts to the apprenticeship programme announced by the Welsh Government on 19 December 2023 will have a devastating effect on apprentices, employers and communities, signalling very challenging times ahead for the FE and work-based learning sectors. It could mean 10,000 fewer apprentices able to start next year, with the reductions falling disproportionately on young people, and those in the lowest socio-economic groups. The draft budget is a huge gamble for Wales’ economy and communities. The Welsh Government must think again and reverse the catastrophic decision to cut the apprenticeship programme.” Further education colleges are fundamental to a fairer, greener and stronger Wales, but they need sustainable funding to support learners and to deliver for employers. The combination of the cuts to the apprenticeship budget and reductions in funding elsewhere means there is a perfect storm facing the sector because of the proposals in the draft budget, says ECA. With over 20 years of experience in training plumbers, heating engineers and electricians in essential industry qualifications, the company is well-placed to support the next generation of building services installers. Scheduled for launch in summer 2024 at its Northolt centre, the first apprenticeships will be in Gas Engineering and Smart Metering. CONTRACT NEWS NEW EV CHARGING POINTS FOR NORTH LONDON New electric vehicle (EV) charging points in North London have been energised and are ready to use, thanks to a partnership through the UK Power Networks Green Recovery programme. The £1.2 million Green Recovery investment is delivering 1.5MVA of extra power to EV charge points at Motor Fuel Group’s (MFG) service station in Stoke Newington. The upgrade is for MFG Ambassador, on the key A10 route, with eight new ultra-rapid 150kW EV Power chargers now online. UK Power Networks is delivering £66 million in investment across 85 sites as part of the Green Recovery programme, fast-tracking low carbon energy projects, helping achieve the Government’s Ten Point Plan towards Net Zero by 2050. This supports the transition to net zero carbon emissions and London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s pathway for London to be net zero carbon by 2030. GBSM COMPLETES LUCENT PROJECT Gratte Brothers Security Management (GBSM) recently reached project completion on Lucent W1. This is the building that the Piccadilly Lights sit on and is now a new six-storey, mixed-use building. Over the 36-week project, the company installed a security system that spanned all 144,000ft2 of retail, residential and office space, including two basement levels. Sustainability was at the core of the build, with trees, a Winter Garden, and roof terraces housing over 600 plants. To align with the site’s sustainability goals, GBSM worked hard to ensure the reduction of waste wherever possible on site. With a reported revenue of £1 million lost for every hour the screens are off, it was imperative they remained fully functional for the duration of the project. GBSM successfully installed security equipment, including the discreet cameras directly under the lights with minimal disruption to the public. GBSM installed the base build access control, CCTV and intercom systems as part of the shell and core scheme for Landsec. The project included the supply and installation of bronze-clad speed lanes complementing the architect’s detail within the reception area, as well as full lift integration. SANGAMO PROVIDES THERMOSTAT SOLUTION FOR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION The Pinnacles is one of Sheffield’s leading student properties with a mix of one, two, three, four and five-bedroom apartments catering for both UK and international students As the required ongoing programme of maintenance was embarked upon, a key element was overcoming the problems associated with the existing heating control provision. Issues with students operating the system had led to an increase in complaints and maintenance requests, in addition to increased energy consumption due to the heating controls being incorrectly operated. The Sangamo Choice Plus Tamperproof Electronic Room Thermostat from ESP was specified as the solution to overcome the issues identified. To date, more than 200 of the thermostats, in a white finish, have been installed in the communal hallways of each of the flats, and they will continue to be installed on a rolling basis as the maintenance programme is carried out. The Choice Plus electronic room controls are concealed by a discreet tamperproof cover. CONTRACT NEWS 3TI DELIVERS NEW SOLAR INSTALLATION TO BRISTOL AIRPORT 3ti, a UK provider of large-scale solar projects for private and public organisations, has designed and delivered a 2.8-acre solar installation to Bristol Airport, helping it complete the next phase of its sustainability journey. The ground-mounted solar arrays will generate 1.5GWh of sustainable electricity each year and, when combined with existing renewable energy on site, will cater for over 10% of the airport’s annual energy needs. Bristol Airport will use 3ti’s solar installation to reach its ambitious target of 25% self-sufficiency by 2025, building on its success of becoming the UK’s first carbon neutral airport in 2021. The 3ti project will also help the airport’s efforts in achieving net zero operations by 2030, following a multi-million-pound investment into solar power, the removal of gas use, air source heat pumps and low-energy LED lighting. 3ti has created a unique design for the Bristol Airport installation, spreading 2,968 panels across three steel-framed structures that sit low to the ground, using recycled railway sleepers to negate the need for deep piling. The solar installation will generate the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power 388 houses in the first year. ROAD TUNNEL LED LIGHTING UPGRADE COMPLETED FOR KCC
£1.8BN OF CONTRACTS AWARDED TO DELIVER THE UK’S FIRST HIGH-CAPACITY EAST COAST CABLE PROJECT Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1), a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission, part of SP Energy Networks, will see the creation of a 525kV, 2GW HVDC subsea transmission cable from Torness in East Lothian, Scotland to Hawthorn Pit in County Durham, England, enabling the transmission of renewable green energy to power more than two million homes across the UK. EGL1 has reached another significant milestone in the development of a new subsea electricity superhighway by awarding the Prysmian Group a £750m contract to deliver the UK’s first 525kV HVDC electricity transmission cable. GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business and MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals have also been awarded a £1bn contract to supply and construct two HVDC converter stations, one at each end of the link. The UK is transforming the electricity grid – the largest overhaul in generations helping deliver a cleaner, greener, and more secure energy system for the future. This means multi-billion investments in new electricity transmission projects across the country. This upgrade will help move more clean energy from where it is generated to where it is needed and plays a major role in the UK moving towards its net zero target, including six subsea links between Scotland and England, of which this joint project is the first. EGL1 is a key part of the new network infrastructure required for the UK to reach net zero, playing a critical role in supporting the nation’s future security of supply by reducing dependence on and price exposure to volatile global wholesale gas markets.
Bouygues Energies & Services (an Equans company) has completed a contract for the design and build of a new LED lighting and control system for Chestfield Road Tunnel, on the A299 near Whitstable for Kent County Council (KCC). The energy-efficient lighting solution will result in energy savings of over one million kWh per year, a 63% reduction, which is equivalent to the energy bills for over 340 homes per year. The tunnel lighting replacement project presented a significant opportunity to lower the KCC’s energy consumption, carbon footprint and, in turn, reduce maintenance and electricity costs. The previous lighting system had passed it’s designed life span, with maintenance work and costs increasing year on year just to keep the lights on. The tunnel was predominately lit with old fashioned fluorescent tubes containing the hazardous substance, mercury. Forthcoming changes in law, will effectively ban the sale of these lamps going forward, creating further maintenance issues if not upgraded. The newly installed LED system will massively reduce maintenance works and running costs for KCC. The works involved the removal and recycling of all existing lighting systems and cabling along with the associated steel work and control systems, the installation of new stainless steel suspension systems and cable trays, and the latest, most efficient LED lighting technology. The installation was controlled by a completely new state of the art lighting control system incorporating luminance meters (photometers), an RS-485 duplex communication system running throughout the tunnel connecting the DALI controlled lighting to the existing overall tunnel SCADA control system. As part of these works, modifications and replacement to switchgear and electrical distribution systems were carried out, including 14 tunnel distribution panels, 38 function units in existing LV switchboards and over 14km of power cabling, including both AC and DC systems. Additionally, the tunnel’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and battery storage facilities at the end of their design life have been replaced with an efficient and cost effective state-of-the-art UPS system. SELECT LAUNCHES SQA-ACCREDITED INSTALLATION TRAINING COURSE SELECT has responded to the rising demand for electric vehicle (EV) charge points by launching its first installation training course. Developed after extensive consultation with its 1,260 member firms, the one-day module can be delivered in person or online and aims to ensure that EV technology is installed safely and competently by a qualified electrician. Rated at Level 7 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), the first SQA customised award in EV charging equipment installations was delivered at the Gailes Hotel in Irvine in November. Delegates were given an introduction to the technology and an overview of its electrical requirements before getting hands-on with the units and being talked through the installation process. The course was created by Training Development Adviser, Stuart McKelvie, and Consultant Technical Adviser, Billy McRobert, and both delivered the first session in Ayrshire, with Technical Adviser Robert McGoogan sitting in to experience things as a delegate.

EV CHARGING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS The UK’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is accelerating rapidly, presenting a significant opportunity for electrical contractors, says Ben Hugh, UK EVC Business Development Manager at Vestel UK.

ith over 30% of the UK’s new car sales now hybrid or fully electric vehicles (excluding mild-hybrid), the rollout of EVs is accelerating much faster than the growth in charging infrastructure at traditional fuelling locations – petrol stations, motorway services and supermarket forecourts. Few of these locations will ever have the space capacity for the longer times required to recharge an EV compared to a liquid fuel top-up, fundamentally changing the way we look to refuel vehicles in the future. Destination charging, where vehicles are charged either at home and/or the destination they are travelling to, is a compelling solution to this problem. Even for those EV drivers unable to charge easily at home, plugging in at work, at the supermarket, at the cinema, in small business and retailer car parks, and at public facilities across the UK will become the new normal of refuelling. EV charger installation at all these locations will be fundamental in creating accessible charging infrastructure, offering a huge opportunity for electrical contractors over the next decade or more. One of the most significant areas of opportunity lies in the installation of EV chargers in residential properties. As more individuals purchase electric cars, the demand for home charging stations is increasing. Installing a charger at home offers convenience and potentially lower charging costs for EV owners and, outside of major city conurbations, there are plenty of homes with private parking and driveways to accommodate personal charging. Beyond residential installations, there will be a growing demand for EV chargers from businesses, particularly retailers. Retailers with their own car parks are ideally placed to offer smaller AC chargers that customers can use to top-up while they shop. This could be offered free to loyal customers as an incentive, discounted with cash-back codes from purchases or simply charged for at a commercial rate. Installing EV chargers looks good for the brand and underpins its sustainable credentials and increases customer dwell-time in-store, which can act as a powerful shopping incentive, or it can be used to simply increase revenue.

The growing market for the installation of EV chargers requires skilled electrical contractors
The latter is likely to be the strongest incentive for non-retail businesses to install chargers in their car parks. While this could be offered as an employee perk, free or discounted, the opportunity to offer commercial charging 24/7, including weekends, could generate significant revenue, even outside of normal business hours. While larger hyper-fast DC chargers would be prohibitively expensive for smaller companies to install, AC chargers designed specifically for small businesses are ideal. Given the low up-front cost of fully specified dual-output models like the EVC10, these are very compelling reasons for business owners to investigate EV charging, opening the door for contractors to sell the concept and the installation. This growing market for the installation of EV chargers requires skilled electrical contractors who can ensure that installations are safe, efficient and compliant with regulations. The sheer number of potential installations in residential properties, businesses and public facilities translates into a vast market for these services. Electrical contractors who position themselves in this niche can expect a steady stream of business as the EV market continues to grow. PROVIDING SOLUTIONS TO MULTIPLE INDUSTRY CHALLENGES Carly Weller interviews David Cunningham, Kidde’s Area Specification Manager, about his role and the future plans for the company. CW: Tell us about yourself and how you got into the sector. DC: I’ve been working in the fire safety sector for over 20 years. I had planned to study as a car mechanic initially, but an opportunity arose to join a fire and security distributor. After spending a few years working within wholesale and distribution, I then decided that I wanted to gain some experience out in the field, which I achieved from working for a BAFE accredited contractor. Since then, I have had numerous roles in the sector, including Business Development Manager, Project Manager and Fire Program Manager before my current role at Kidde Safety Europe.
CW: For those who may not know, can you give us an overview of the work that Kidde does? DC: Kidde has been a leading manufacturer of fire and life safety products for more than 100 years. Our ranges include smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms, and our portfolio has been extended with the latest products inherited by the Cavius acquisition in 2021. This is great for electrical contractors as it means we can offer greater flexibility and choice for residential systems. Kidde offers a wide range of Grade D1, D2, F1 and F2 devices that meet the standards required for all types of domestic property in the UK. In addition, Kidde recently launched a new CO2 detector, which is ideal for the home, school or workplace by monitoring air quality levels and also monitoring room temperature and humidity levels. CW: Tell us about your current role - what are you responsible for and what does the normal working day consist of? DC: I am Area Specification Manager for the London region. My current responsibilities include achieving specification for Kidde and Cavius products within the social housing and new build arenas. This is achieved by working with consultants and electricians to provide professional advice and discuss possible solutions to assist the client with their compliance matters. More recently, Kidde has launched a CPD accredited training program called PRO Installer, which I help to deliver. It provides education and guidance to people within our sector, including electricians and social housing consultants. Also, I strongly believe that attending events is key as it’s a valuable platform to speak directly to installers – gaining feedback and opinion. CW: What are the best things about your role? What are the most challenging? DC: I enjoy meeting industry colleagues and professionals on a daily basis and helping to provide a solution to the multiple challenges that are faced in the industry. For example, I thoroughly enjoy showing landlords/residents the long-term benefits of bringing their systems up-to-date with current legislation. Aspects of the role which are most challenging but also rewarding include helping the responsible person to fully understand and appreciate the current regulations and standards to ensure that the building that they have responsibility for is safe and compliant.

CW: What’s next for you and for Kidde? DC: Over the foreseeable future I will continue to promote Kidde and Cavius products to the sector whilst providing updates to our industry with regards to product development, events and training initiatives. I am extremely excited about the recent launch of the Cavius CV9004 Relay, which is designed to provide enhanced safety to building occupants by serving as a dedicated connection between Cavius RF smoke and heat alarms which can integrate with third party equipment such as Telecare systems, and Part 1 fire detection systems. CW: Do you have any career advice for anyone starting out in the industry? DC: Be yourself, work hard and the training should never stop. Listen to industry professionals and read the necessary documentation and legislation to make sure you remain up-to-date with any changes and revisions. CW: What do you think are the most exciting products or technologies coming to the market? DC: I believe that IoT and integration of services will reshape the way we implement fire detection systems for years ahead, meaning that all professionals within our sector will have to adapt to an entirely new way of working. SMOKE ALARM INSTALLS: THE HIDDEN REQUIREMENT IN BS 7671 Aico highlights the importance of regulation compliance in fire detection and alarm system installation, and reveals a concealed requirement that must be followed.
E
ven if familiar with BS 7671 and the electrical wiring regulations, you might be missing a crucial detail lurking within its pages. This seemingly innocuous line tucked away at the back holds major implications for electricians – and your next smoke alarm installation could depend on it. That line simply states: ‘Fire detection and fire alarm systems shall comply with the relevant parts of BS 5839 series.’ But what it truly means is that BS 5839:6, another British Standard specifically dealing with fire alarm systems, is inseparable from BS 7671 when it comes to smoke alarm installations. Remember, the word ‘shall’ in the appendix clarifies that complying with BS 5839:6 isn’t optional, it’s mandatory.
Membership matters: Why compliance is key
For electricians, adhering to BS 7671 is essential. It’s the foundation for maintaining a NICEIC or equivalent membership – and good standing in the industry. That paragraph linking BS 7671 to BS 5839:6 leaves no room for ambiguity. New smoke alarm installations or partial upgrades must meet the minimum requirements of BS5839:6, which vary depending on the type of property:

• Rented properties: Grade D1 Category LD2 is the minimum. • Private dwellings: Grade D2 Category LD2 (new/materially altered property or where rewire is undertaken), Grade D2 Category LD3 in existing properties. The standard states that the level of protection for the occupants needs to be directly related to the fire risk; the categories of system describe the level of protection the systems provide:
• Rework and frustration: Potentially pulling up carpets and floorboards to install the missing alarm, adding time and complexity to the project. • Damage and delays: Unforeseen property damage and potentially upset clients are never desired outcomes.
Radio frequency: A modern solution
• Category LD2: A system incorporating detectors in all circulation areas that form part of the escape routes from the premises, and in all specified rooms or areas that present a high fire risk to occupants, including any kitchen and the principal habitable room. • Category LD3: A system incorporating detectors in all circulation areas that form part of the escape routes from the premises.
Wireless Radio Frequency (RF) technology offers a convenient and flexible alternative to traditional wired systems. With RF products and accessories, minimal disruption is required to a property. While many products may look the same, performance properties vary greatly
properties can differ significantly. Where fire performance is a concern, these properties must be scrutinised fully to ensure they meet the stringent safety requirements of the application. There are numerous products available on the market, often for a lower cost than comparable alternatives. Selecting one of these can be a false economy, so it is essential to verify all recommended performance criteria to avoid inadvertently reducing the level of safety and increasing risk. This encompasses the basic requirements such as non-flame propagation, but also additional aspects such as the oxygen index, low smoke emission, high flame retardancy, low toxic fumes, and halogen-free properties. A good way to verify a supplier’s claim is to request details about the testing process that the conduit has been subjected to. Independent test results, conducted by professionals with expertise in the specific field can help eliminate bias in the evaluation. Specifiers should confirm that the chosen testing methods align with established benchmarks for fire safety performance. It can be especially beneficial if the manufacturer can provide evidence of long-term performance testing. To offer low fire hazard classification, a product should meet four clearly defined characteristics. This includes low smoke emission, high flame retardancy, low toxic fumes and halogen-free properties. Low smoke emission: Here a sample of material is burnt under controlled conditions in a smoke chamber and the smoke obscuration of a defined beam
of light is measured. This determines how much smoke is produced when the material is on fire, which could restrict visibility within an installation. Flame retardancy: Flammability – the measure of how difficult it is to ignite the conduit if it is exposed to a heat source – is often cited here. The minimum requirement is that the product is self-extinguishing, according to conduit system standard EN 61386. Here a vertical sample of conduit is exposed to a 1kW burner and must extinguish within 30 seconds of the removal of the flame with no flaming droplets. This determines whether the material will continue to burn or potentially spread the fire. Low toxicity: In this test, a sample of material is burnt under controlled conditions in a smoke chamber and the fumes are analysed for various gases. The concentration of each gas is then multiplied by its toxic potency to give a toxicity index. This determines the type of gases which may be created if the material was to catch fire and whether they are toxic or dangerous. If halogens, sulphur or phosphorus are present in a material, it is unlikely to pass the low toxicity tests. Just because a material is halogen-free it does not mean that it is automatically a low fire hazard product too. Without the accompanying low toxicity, low smoke and flame-retardant properties, it will not meet the full criteria. Typical halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. All of these produce highly toxic fumes and thick smoke if exposed to a naked flame. Halogen-free Polypropylene conduits without flame retardants are used commonly for data centre cable protection as they are halogen, sulphur and phosphorous free. These will not aid acid formation or damage equipment, but they are highly flammable, and flame propagating. In contrast, PA6 (nylon) can offer a truly superior lower fire hazard classification when it comes to fire performance as it is self-extinguishing, halogen, sulphur and phosphorous-free. While many products may look the same, performance properties vary greatly so customers should always check suitability and compatibility for their application and consider the installation as a complete, system. hen it comes to selecting cable protection for low fire hazard performance, looks can be deceiving. Although flexible conduit might look the same visually, with similar colours and profiles, material properties can differ significantly. Traditionally, halogen-free materials have been specified and often based on the common misconception that they offer comprehensive fire protection performance. Although such a conduit, stated as halogen-free, may prevent the generation of toxic gases in some settings, it does not always mean it is flame retardant or consists of low smoke properties – and could still be flammable if exposed to a heat source. Rob Sprason, Technical Sales Manager from Atkore Flexicon, a supplier of flexible conduit, discusses the importance of specifying the correct cable protection to meet all low fire hazard requirements, alongside checking the manufacturer’s performance claims thoroughly. The UK wiring Regulations (BS 7671) require non-flame propagating (self-extinguishing) conduit to be called for and tested by means of the flame propagation test in EN 61386, as a bare minimum. Many operators assume this basic requirement will be met by any flexible conduit they specify, but this is not always the case. This can give rise to a potentially dangerous situation where cables can be laid in flexible conduit that, by its standard, only needs to clarify if it is self-extinguishing and does not offer a comprehensive level of fire performance. Unfortunately, no single European classification standard for low fire hazard cable management products defines the terms and results expected, and further clarification is required. The lack of a defined standard makes it all the more important that specifiers verify the manufacturer’s claims to ensure that the conduit specified offers more than non-flame propagation performance alone. One length of flexible conduit can appear much like another, and while two products might look identical on the surface, their underlying performance

SAFETY HAS TO BE PARAMOUNT WHEN DEALING WITH ARC FLASH DANGERS Eric van Riet of Fluke explains how thermal imaging and wireless test and measurement devices can help minimise the risk of injury to engineers who work near arc flash zones.
E
ngineers who are required to work near exposed energised conductors or live circuit components are at risk of significant injury or even death due to the phenomenon known as arc flash, so it is vital that companies prioritise their safety when required to operate in such hazardous environments.
What is arc flash?
Arc flash is the light and heat that can be generated by a massive electrical arc fault explosion in which temperatures can reach between 2,800°C and 19,000°C (5,000°F and 35,000°F). If those figures are difficult to relate to, consider that the temperature at the surface of the sun is said to be around 5,500°C (9,932°F) – making the maximum temperature of an arc flash up to

four times the heat of the sun. These kinds of temperatures are capable of igniting clothing and burning the skin of anyone who comes within a few feet of an arc flash, they can also vaporise metals such as copper, aluminium and steel and can cause lung and eyesight damage and lead to hospitalisation (or worse). Arc fault incidents take place many times a day around the world – in a single year in the USA, 1,000 electrical workers were said to have suffered shocks and burns, some of them fatal – so they are real and they are dangerous. No engineer or health and safety team should ever think that arc flashes will not happen on their watch. They should also be aware that a plasma arc has a virtually unlimited current carrying capacity once it’s established and if vaporised metals are present this could strengthen the plasma arc further, turning a single-phase arc into a more dangerous and powerful three-phase arc.
The first step in minimising injury from arc flash is to understand how it is created. An arc flash is an explosive release of energy from an electrical arc when the electrical current passes through ionised air. In less than a second, an arc flash is initiated from a phase-to-ground or a phase-to-phase fault. The energy of an arc flash converts primarily into heat and light while the associated arc blast creates pressure waves that can rupture panels, create flying debris and lead to acoustic injuries or devastating physical trauma for anyone nearby. One of the most common causes of arc flash is voltage transients or spikes, resulting from switching reactive loads or lightning strikes. The transient might last only microseconds, but it can carry thousands of amps of energy and if it happens while measurements are being taken, a plasma arc can form – inside a measurement tool or outside. Other common causes of arc faults – making them particularly difficult to predict or avoid – can include touching a test probe to the wrong surface or something as simple as dropped tools, worn or loose connections, gaps in insulation, improperly installed parts, dust or corrosion.

In order to minimise the risk of electrical injuries, three arc boundaries have been defined: the restricted boundary closest to the exposed equipment; the limited approach boundary further away; and the arc flash boundary. The latter is usually the furthest boundary from the exposed equipment. Essentially, the closer a worker is to exposed and live equipment within these boundaries, the more they require personal protective equipment (PPE). The arc flash boundary is the minimum ‘safe’ distance from an arc fault incident and can change depending on the

potential arc flash hazard. The boundary is calculated to 1.2 calories/cm2 of incident energy, which is the distance where a worker without appropriate PPE would receive second-degree burns. Sometimes this boundary is the furthest one from the exposed equipment, other times the limited approach boundary is the furthest out. When the arc flash boundary is the furthest away, it becomes the line no one should pass without proper training and PPE.

One such device is Fluke’s PQ400 electrical measurement window (EMW), which is permanently installed into cabinets with voltage and current connections made inside the panel. The PQ400 gives workers access to critical power quality and energy data while decreasing testing time and maintaining a high level of safety. Users can plug their power quality tools directly
into the EMW to collect all the data that’s needed. As well as the safety aspects, advantages of using the PQ400 include lower maintenance costs and reduced downtime by being able to make critical power quality and energy measurements without opening the panel door. The EMW also enables logging and monitoring to be done at any time, without disrupting operations, while measurement efficiency is increased. Similarly, Fluke’s CV400 ClirVu 4in window is a permanent infra-red window that provides a view of what’s on the other side of a panel without workers being exposed to live voltage or needing full PPE. Offering the most visibility into a panel for a thermal camera (simplifying the inspection process by allowing measurements to be taken without having to open a cabinet), the widest Fluke window option available also helps to reduce time and costs involved in preventive maintenance. Another device, Fluke’s TiS75+ thermal camera, enables operators to capture and measure heat energy emanating from a source without making physical contact, meaning they can see instantly what’s running too hot or too cold before anything breaks down. Offering one-handed image capture, review and save facilities, the camera not only helps operators to keep a

safe distance from an arc flash boundary but also allows them to compare thermal scans over time using the Fluke Connect app. Another product – the Fluke 376 FC clamp meter – makes it possible to set up measurements and transmit the data from inside the arc flash boundary, meaning someone within 20m of the equipment is able to open the Fluke Connect app and read the figures from outside the boundary. As well as reducing the time technicians spend in the arc flash boundary, the clamp meter helps them to log, trend and monitor measurements remotely so they can pinpoint intermittent faults. Finally, the Fluke 3000FC digital multimeter is a flexible DMM allowing users to read results through the Fluke Connect app outside the arc flash boundary. Using this equipment cuts the time technicians spend inside the boundary and offers them an easy-to-read display with large digits and bright backlight. While it is impossible to completely eliminate the dangers of working with electricity, with careful planning, taking the approaches described above and using the correct tools, there are highly effective ways available for engineers to keep the risk of arc flash injury to an absolute minimum. It isn’t always possible but, ideally, operators should work on de-energised equipment whenever they can – it’s the only effective way to eliminate the chance of hazards. Engineers should also test for the absence of voltage before conducting any tests without wearing the necessary PPE – until this testing proves that the circuits are dead, they must be considered to be energised. It is also important to inspect equipment regularly in order to identify any wear and tear before it becomes a problem using condition monitoring tools or infrared (IR) windows. Knowing the history of the equipment being inspected – and what a normal reading looks like – can help an engineer to identify abnormalities and take any corrective actions. Baseline readings should be obtained by inspecting such critical components as electrical connections, insulation and circuit breakers. However, by far the best way for an engineer to be as safe as possible when checking live circuits and energised conductors is to stay out of the arc flash boundary altogether – there is no need for anyone to place themselves into an arc flash zone unless it is absolutely necessary. The most effective way of remaining distanced from danger is to use non-contact thermal imaging or wireless test and measurement devices as well as remote displays, all of which enable accurate and instant readings to be taken on energised components without having to make any kind of contact.

ccording to the English Housing Survey, the majority (93%) of the population owns a smoke alarm. However, more than one-fifth of those surveyed admitted they had never tested it – despite industry advice being to test at least once a month. While many perceive the installation of an alarm system as the only protection they need against fire harm, regular upkeep of the devices and the creation of a fire escape plan is equally as important to ensure safety. Electricians have a real opportunity to make a difference to the habits of the nation, by engaging homeowners in how to safeguard their homes from the threat of fire and saving lives.
A call for change in the UK

It’s easy to perceive fire as a distant threat but its risk is only increasing. In the year ending March 2023, England experienced a 5.1% increase in primary fires compared to the previous year. Primary fires are defined as those occurring in non-derelict buildings, vehicles or outdoor structures, involving fatalities, casualties, rescues or fires attended by five or more pumping appliances. Research shows that without a working smoke alarm in the home, occupants are around 10 times more likely to die from a fire. Reflecting on the English Housing Survey, the data means that one in every five people in England are significantly increasing their chances of fire injury or even death. Alarmingly, the most vulnerable in our society are disproportionately affected by fire deaths, with nearly 50% of fire deaths among children under 16 involving those under the age of five. Evidently, children need change, and the statistics illustrate why we need to enhance fire safety knowledge.
Taking steps to reduce fire harm
The role of electrical contractors and electricians in sharing vital fire safety information Electricians and electrical contractors are already trusted individuals in their field, and given this role, the industry has a unique opportunity to advocate for fire safety and share resources with clients who already trust and believe in them. Electricians don’t need to deliver the message alone, though. It starts with collaboration throughout the whole system. By working with alarm providers offering quality resources homeowners can use to protect themselves, electricians can significantly improve awareness of fire safety. Fire can start for a multitude of reasons. While people may think they have everything under control, a simple mistake with a candle, oil on a stove, or an electric fault, can cause a fatal spark. Fire burns faster than ever due to materials used in our furniture, and in less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a fire. n average, each year firefighters in London attend more than 250 fire alarms in kitchens at student accommodation premises, but 90% of those are false alarms. This is hugely inconvenient for everyone who is evacuated from the building. It is also dangerous, as fire crews could be delayed from attending genuine emergencies. For many students, moving away from home for the first time is very exciting. But with the excitement comes the potential for distraction, and inadvertently placing themselves in danger by not giving the cooking of meals their full attention. In UK homes, 67% of fires start in the kitchen. Electrical Safety First, the campaigning organisation, aims to reduce death and injury caused by electricity and is recognised by government and industry as the leading authority on electrical safety. It’s five-year survey concluded that one in seven – the equivalent of 300,000 students – admitted to falling asleep while cooking food, while 56% confirmed they had used a cooker while under the influence of alcohol. Unsurprisingly, during the survey period, there were 911 accidental fires in student halls, 80% of these in kitchens and 60% of those are during the night. These are harrowing statistics. Keeping young people safe must be the priority of any accommodation provider. But this responsibility extends beyond the student population. Residents of assisted living accommodation, hostels, holiday cabins and caravans, and the kitchens of people living with dementia, are all environments that would benefit from devices that monitor heat levels on the cooking surface and identify unattended kitchens. Audible and visual alerts warn occupants of imminent dangerous situations. A SECURE HOLD FOR A PHOTOVOLTAIC FACADE Photovoltaic panels have been used to clad the rear-ventilated rainscreen facade over the course of an extensive energy upgrade of the Il Palazzetto residential complex in the metropolitan city of Palermo, Sicily.

he photovoltaic system has a permanent, secure hold thanks to fischer BWM facade systems and fischer heavy-duty fixings. The fixing specialist provided the client with additional support as a project partner from the design stage, through pull-out tests and on-site installation until the project’s successful completion.

The Il Palazzetto residential complex lies in the popular Termini Imerese community in the metropolitan city of Palermo and was in desperate need of renovation due to its high energy consumption and larger structural deficiencies compared to modern construction methods. As a result of a comprehensive survey, a solution was found that meets the current energy requirements of modernised old buildings. Key measures included: insulating the building; replacing doors and windows; overhauling the facilities; installing a photovoltaic system; and an energy storage system for the individual apartments and communal rooms. EPS panels (expanded polystyrene) with a thickness of 6cm were used to insulate the entire building envelope. The original windows and doors without a thermal break were replaced by PVC doors and windows with six air chambers in the profiles and double glazing with a 90% argon filling. Each apartment was equipped with split air-to-water heat pumps for heating, air conditioning and hot water supply. In addition to this, each apartment was equipped with a 4kW photovoltaic system consisting of monocrystalline silicon capable of absorbing solar radiation and is used in the production of photovoltaic cells. Each apartment also features a 6kW energy storage device. A 10kW photovoltaic system with a 10kW

energy storage system was additionally installed for the building’s communal areas, in order to reduce energy consumption. One of the notable features of the Palazzetto project was the installation of the photovoltaic system to two vertical walls of the building’s envelope. The photovoltaic panels were used as cladding while applying the rear-ventilated rainscreen facade principle. The BWM ATK 100 Minor VPT vertical profiles were used for the installation. These were inserted in fischer BWM 150 LFH and 80 LSH wall brackets with Thermostops. The facade construction specialist installed horizontal profiles onto the ATK vertical profiles and fastened the cladding to them. The FAZ II Plus bolt anchor and fischer injection systems were installed in addition to fischer facade accessories. “The renovation is the result of thorough planning decisions and required specialist knowledge of the energy sector,” says Vincenzo Torregrossa, founder of ENNETI, the company responsible for the engineering work carried out on the project. “Several critical factors were taken into account, including thermal expansion, wind loads and tensile strength, which led us to opt for the reliable and robust products by fischer.” fischer, fischer.de

POWERING UP SOLAR PV SYSTEMS Power Quality Expert looks at the importance of photovoltaic installation safety testing and servicing.
T
he very rapid and dynamic development of photovoltaic installations taking place in the world in recent years is impressive. This is largely due to the departure from traditional, non-renewable energy sources. Greater social awareness and the government’s desire to encourage people and businesses to take responsibility for the climate around us has forced a shift in the energy sector towards green energy. In addition, we have seen the technology constantly evolving, which is resulting in lower costs for consumers to adopt solar PV energy solutions. This, combined with the constant increase in energy prices, makes an economic shift more and more favourable for the photovoltaic sector and is a key factor moving customers towards further investment in solar PV systems. With the push for energy saving increasing, it is important to remember that testing the safety of the photovoltaic installation and the servicing of these installations is a growing business. Because of this, it is very important that the installation complies with all safety requirements after installation and that its operation complies with the applicable regulations. We can only be sure of this by carrying out the appropriate tests and inspections and periodic checks. The requirements for these are described in Section 712 of the 18th Edition Amendment 2, along with the standard IEC 62446. The standard also defines the method and scope of safety control of photovoltaic installations. Measurements allow you to determine not only the safety, but also the efficiency

By measuring the parameters of the PV installation, such as the short-circuit current Isc or the open-circuit voltage Uoc, you can quickly verify the correct connections of the modules in the string, their polarity and operation. Measurements can be made for the entire chain of panels or for a single module. The continuity of protective connections and the grounding resistance on the DC side are measured in the same way as in AC installations. In the case of insulation resistance tests, the difference is that the measurements are carried out under voltage, therefore special care should always be taken. The values of operating currents and power on the DC and AC sides must be checked during the operation of both installations. Based on these measurements, the efficiency of the inverter is verified and compared with the efficiency declared by the manufacturer. The manufacturer of the inverter will usually specify the parameters of individual elements of the PV system which are measured in STC (Standard Test Conditions: 25°C, 1000W/m², AM 1,5). For comparison purposes, solar installation testers such as the Sonel PVM-1020 can automatically convert the results to STC conditions. This is done using an irradiance and temperature meter such as the Sonel IRM-1. Both of these meters cooperate with each other and normally work over long distance through radio link. The automatically transmitted data is then converted to measurement values of short circuit current and open circuit voltage referenced to the standard STC conditions.

ENERGY TRANSITION —A MYRIAD OF OPPORTUNITIES IN AN UNCERTAIN MARKET The UK construction market faces an uncertain outlook in 2024 based on many factors including volatile finance and energy costs, a forthcoming general election, and the potential impact on policies. Yet despite this uncertainty, the UK electrical sector provides a myriad of opportunities for electrical contractors to support their clients’ energy and sustainability needs and to outperform the underlying construction market based on strong technical and financial foundations. Marc Gaunt, Eaton’s UK Commercial and Industrial Segment Manager, explains how.

Rising energy prices and falling PV costs mean that there are now strong business cases for investing in more renewable energy on-site or consuming more existing renewable energy, rather than exporting back to the grid. Whilst PV might seem like an obvious business opportunity for many contractors, integration of energy storage systems provides further business potential for contractors whilst adding significant value to the business case for clients.
any clients are now driving electrification not just of their buildings but also of their vehicle fleets. Initially stimulated by carbon reduction commitments and government policy, the need to change is now accelerating due to recent past and likely future volatile fossil fuel prices. The electrification of building heating and fleets means many clients will be looking to upgrade their existing electrical infrastructure, providing ongoing opportunities to both integrate new technologies whilst upgrading existing infrastructure.
Overcoming the challenges of capacity and grid connections
Renewable energy integration Despite oil prices falling from their peak post the start of the Ukraine war, they remain significantly above average levels seen over the past decade; with future ‘volatility’ being a key word used by many market analysts. Renewable energy integration is a significant opportunity for businesses to mitigate price volatility from external suppliers by increasing their self-sufficiency (percentage of total energy provided by onsite energy sources) whilst significantly reducing emissions.
One size does not fit all when choosing the right solution for commercial buildings
Electrical capacity and access to new, or larger grid connections is a challenge for many building operators across Europe, including the UK. At the end of 2023, only 39% of motorway services had reached the government target of six or more rapid chargers. Whilst this might seem like merely a challenge of the roll out of chargers themselves, in 2023 Moto Hospitality reported charge points for electric vehicles were ‘sitting with no power’ due to a lack of capacity. As well as providing the potential to maximise the use of renewables, energy storage systems have the potential to reduce the grid connection size required. By integrating energy storage systems,
contractors can enable developments to be operational in a much shorter period of time, allowing faster introduction of new environmentally friendly heating systems or revenue generating infrastructure such as EV charging.
Legislation
Current and likely future governments are continuing to review, refine and lay down legislation which supports the adoption of new technologies in both residential and commercial buildings. Since April 2023, all let office accommodation must achieve a minimum EPC rating of band E. Legislation currently before Parliament will raise this threshold further to band B by 2030. If implemented, these proposals are set to generate substantial refurbishment and retrofit over the remainder of the decade, as many existing premises are currently below these ratings. For example, since 2020, 36% of EPCs issued for existing London premises fell below band C and 73% were below band B. This is likely to generate significant refurbishment and redevelopment opportunities for electrical contractors through the integration of new technologies.

APPROVED DOCUMENT M — ACCESS TO AND USE OF BUILDINGS Scolmore Group addresses some of the minimum recommendations detailed within Approved Document M1 and M2 (ADM1 and ADM2) for electrical accessories within premises.
A
pproved documents (AD) provide practical guidance about how to comply with the requirements of The Building Regulations for England and Wales (where relevant). Under schedule 1, Part M of the Building Regulations requires that, amongst other things, reasonable provision is made for people to gain access to, and use the building and its facilities. Part M is split into two Parts – M1 and M2. Part M Volume 1 (M1) covers dwellings and Volume 2 (M2) covers buildings other than dwellings.
Dwellings: M1
Reasonable provision should be made for most people, including wheelchair users, to access and use the facilities in a ‘visitable’ new dwelling. To this end, insofar as electrical services are concerned, services and controls should comply with clause 1.18. This clause details where switches, socket-outlets and the like
should be installed. Diagram 1.5 (Fig 1) of clause 1.18 sets the range within which services and controls should be installed as between 450mm and 1,200mm. However, the consumer unit should be positioned at a height where the switches are between 1,350mm-1,450mm above floor level. Accessories require no special consideration, such as colour, larger switch mechanisms and the like. Where a dwelling is ‘accessible and adaptable’ and a wider range of occupants are likely to access the dwelling, such as the elderly, those with reduced mobility and some wheelchair users, additional thought should be given to clause 2.30 of ADM1. In addition to the general requirements detailed for visitable new dwellings, switches and socket-outlets and other controls should be a minimum of 300mm (measured horizontally) from an inside corner. As with visitable new dwellings, there are no special requirements for accessories. Where a dwelling is designed for wheelchair users, there are further considerations to make regarding height, position and the nature of accessories. Consumer units are to be positioned as for visitable dwellings, however,
switches, socket-outlets and controls are to be mounted with their centre line 700mm-1,000mm above floor level and, to aid access, a minimum of 700mm (measured horizontally) from an inside corner. Isolators used in kitchens should be installed within the same height range. Light switches are to have individual plates unless wide rocker or full plate accessories are provided. Where twin socket-outlets are installed, their switches should be on the outside of the accessory. Furthermore, provision should be made for the principal bedroom to have bedhead controls in the future, to include two-way lighting controls, telephone, socket-outlets and the like.

For buildings other than dwellings, the same requirements for access to, and provision of, services exist as for dwellings. Clause 4.25 highlights the key factors affecting the use of switches, socket-outlets and the like as, ease of operation, visibility, height and freedom from obstruction.

Colour contrast
Clause 4.28 recognises that ‘Controls that contrast visually with their surroundings are more convenient for visually impaired people, as are light switches activated by a large push pad’. Adequate visual contrast exists when the light reflectance value (LRV) between two surfaces is greater than 30 points. However, where the illuminance on a surface is greater than 200 lux, a difference in LRV of 20 points is considered reasonable. Light reflectance values are a measure of the percentage of light reflected from a surface. For example, at one extreme the assumed light reflectance value (LRV) of ‘black’ is 0% and at the other extreme the LRV of ‘white’ is 100% (Fig 2). This simple chart (Fig 2) details approximate values of LRV for certain basic colours. Using this by way of example and assuming cream painted walls, a 30-point contrast exists between the following: Cream and white • Cream and blue/red/wood/pink/brown • and black In this same example, a suitable contrast does not exist between: • Cream and silver Cream and yellow/purple/green/grey • or orange Therefore, in this example, an accessory range of white would be reasonable as would black or brass. Where a 20-point contrast is permitted then the following would apply: Cream and white/silver • Cream and grey/orange/blue/red/wood/ • pink/brown and black Manufacturers of paint products will typically detail LRVs on their websites. Click Scolmore details the LRV value of its accessories at the back of its catalogue. By way of example, the anthracite grey of the Part M range has an LRV of 8.9.
Mounting heights
The mounting heights above floor level and other recommendations for accessories is detailed in clause 4.30 and may slightly differ to those recommended for dwellings. Some of the key recommendations are detailed below: • Socket-outlets/TV/telephone: 400mm-1,000mm with the lower value preferred. • Switches for permanently wired appliances: 400mm-1,200mm. • Switches requiring precise hand movement: 750 mm-1,200mm. • Simple push button controls: Not more than 1,200mm. • Approved Document M – access to and use of buildings. • Socket-outlets are located consistently and no nearer than 350mm from room corners. • The operation of switches, outlets and controls does not require the simultaneous use of both hands. • Switched socket-outlets indicate whether they are on. • Mains and circuit isolator switches clearly indicate whether they are on or off. • Front plates contrast visually with their backgrounds.
There are instances where there are differences in mounting heights recommended for dwellings and buildings other than dwellings. The designer should recognise the differences between ADM1 and ADM2. For each type of premises, designers should carefully consider the mounting heights of accessories and control equipment for accessibility, the nature of the switches (push pads etc. where necessary) for their ease of use, colour contrast to be seen, and positions near wall corners and the like. Care should also be taken to ensure that suitable contrast exists between the light reflectance value of accessories and control equipment and the surfaces they are mounted on. Paint manufacturers will typically provide such data and allow designers to select a suitable range of accessories.
