INDUSTRY NEWS NEW REPORT HIGHLIGHTS ELECTROTECHNICAL SKILLS DEMOGRAPHICS Key insights from a survey report commissioned jointly by the Joint Industry Board (JIB) and the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), and published by the Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP), has revealed differences in requirements and opportunities for the UK’s electrotechnical sector at a regional level. With a total workforce of around 276,000, best case scenario calculations estimate around 33,000 additional skilled workers are needed by 2027. Of those employers questioned, 54% and 49% respectively expect demand for qualified electricians and apprentices to increase over the next two to three years to meet the positive growth. The Labour Market Intelligence report outlines trends in the sector over the past few years, including: Greater London: Higher proportion of 25-49-year-olds •  in the workforce (66%) than the UK average (50%), and greater emphasis on the ageing workforce as a barrier to take-up of new technologies (28%, cf. 20%). •  South West England: Greater importance attached to new technologies as a factor driving workforce changes (22%) than the UK average (9%).

skills of job applicants (69%, cf. 58%) and availability of suitable training locally (84%, cf. 69%). •  East of England: Lower proportion of 16–24-year-olds in the workforce (14%) than UK average (20%), and a higher proportion of 50–64-year-olds (37%, cf. 26%).

•  North West England: Higher proportion of 16-24-year-olds in the workforce (28%) than the UK average (20%). •  Yorkshire and Humberside: Higher proportion of 16–24-year-olds in the workforce (23%) than the UK average (20%), and higher levels of satisfaction with

JCC LIGHTING ACHIEVES CARBON NEUTRALITY

ELECTRICAL APPRENTICES ENTER THE SECTOR AMIDST INDUSTRY SKILLS SHORTAGE Helping to support the housing sector skills gap, six electrical apprentices have secured positions, thanks to EN:Able Futures. Following challenging industry circumstances including business failure and redundancies, several electrical apprentices were displaced and without a business to complete their qualifications. Simultaneously, the five-yearly Electrical Installation Condition Reports for properties requires a range of changes to be rolled out and standards to be updated efficiently. Seeing the potential to tackle both issues head on and encourage new people to the sector, housing organisation, Berneslai Homes, partnered with EN:Able Futures. Having not initially set out to hire apprentices, a lack of skilled workers applying saw Berneslai Homes change tactic and work with Efficiency North to offer positions to six apprentices and then upskill them to support the sector’s changing legislation. Julie Deeley, Director of Operations at EN:Able Futures, says, “Placing apprentices where it is of mutual benefit to the apprentice and the organisation is pivotal to our role as apprenticeship facilitators. We supported Berneslai Homes by conducting interviews and presenting potential candidates, and we will now continue to guide all six of the successful apprentices throughout their qualification.” EN:Able Futures operates across the north of England and offers a flexible service, allowing property and construction employers to hire apprentices for either the full training or just part of it.

In 2022, Leviton announced its climate change goal to achieve company-wide carbon neutrality by 2030 and its ambition to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. The company has announced that JCC Lighting, a Leviton company, has become a carbon neutral organisation, seven years ahead of the 2030 target. This significant milestone takes Leviton’s commitment to becoming a carbon neutral group another step forward. The organisation’s carbon neutral journey has involved a multi-faceted approach that encompasses various key areas. Renewable energy adoption: Since moving to its facility, Lux Park, JCC Lighting has transitioned its electrical energy sources to predominantly solar power. The roof is adorned with 1,300 solar panels, significantly reducing its carbon emissions. In addition to this, the company’s fleet of cars has been replaced with hybrid vehicles along with the installation of EV chargepoints at the head office. Product development: The company has continued to drive improvements across its product lines with a focus on energy efficiency and ease of installation. Carbon offsetting: The company has invested in a carbon offset project and the first project chosen is solar electricity production in the Indian Rajasthan state. The company says that by offsetting residual carbon emissions, it can ensure its net impact on the environment remains neutral. JCC Lighting, jcc.co.uk

The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity has partnered with CITB and Samaritans to create a wellbeing support tool, as part of the industry-wide initiative called ‘Make It Visible’. The Make It Visible campaign and portal aims to make welfare and wellbeing support visible on every construction site, helping to reduce the stigma around the subject and increase awareness of the support pathways available. Having secured over £400,000 in funding from CITB, the #MakeItVisible portal was created earlier this year to support the initiative. The portal provides a wide range of resources, covering themes of emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing. It aims to help individuals recognise when they’re struggling and how to cope with the challenges they’re facing. For each area, there is an extensive list of organisations that can provide further in-depth advice and support. Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, lighthouseclub.org

SELECT RECOGNISES ALICK SMITH WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Protect Monitor Control

An ‘unsung hero’ of the electrical industry has been recognised for his remarkable contribution to the sector with the Lifetime Achievement Award by SELECT. After starting out as an electrical apprentice in the 1960s, Alick has enjoyed a long and distinguished career and in recent years has played a key role at SELECT as lead negotiator in its wage discussions with Unite. Announcing the award, Fiona Harper, Director of Employment and Skills at SELECT, said, “Alick is the true definition of what I would call an unsung hero. Over the years, he has done a great deal of work on behalf of our industry, quietly and efficiently, never seeking the limelight and rarely receiving the recognition he deserves. “He is a fantastic ambassador for our industry who is always on hand to offer support and guidance with a quiet, discreet, yet totally significant word. “He is also immensely proud to be an electrician and being part of what he describes as a vibrant and exciting trade, and especially enjoys spending time with the apprentices and future electricians who, in his opinion, society cannot live without.” Alick accepted his award from Fiona and SELECT President, Alistair Grant, at the SELECT President’s Lunch at the voco Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, which was attended by around 100 senior industry figures. The Lifetime Achievement is SELECT’s most prestigious award and is intended to reflect extraordinary contributions to the industry.

THE NEW ECS CARDS FOR THE BUILDING CONTROLS SECTOR The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) has launched a series of new ECS cards for the building controls industry. The suite of ECS cards for building controls includes: Building controls apprentice •  •  Building controls associate Building controls installer (electrical) •  •  Building controls technician (commissioning) Building controls experienced worker •  •  Building controls engineer ECS is currently working with the BCIA to develop an EWA which will lead to a gold card. This will give the opportunity for experienced professionals who did not have the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship or regulated training routes to meet the same standard as those completing their BEMS apprenticeship. The EWA recognises a person’s existing industry experience and takes into account the work they have been carrying out to the nationally recognised standard so it means people do not need to go back to college and is a

cost and time-effective way of assessing the level of work already being undertaken. When you’ve successfully gone through the assessment process, you’ll gain an industry

recognised certification that meets the requirements for an ECS gold card application. ECS, ecscard.org.uk

SCOLMORE AND NIGLON SETTLE LONG-STANDING LEGAL DISPUTE Scolmore has announced that it has settled a long-running dispute with Niglon, which dates back to 2020. Scolmore says that the settlement represents a very significant victory for the company and that it took a stand because it wanted to send a clear message to the industry that Scolmore will always pursue any infringer, wherever they operate. Intellectual property is one of Scolmore’s most prized assets. The dispute arose after Scolmore became aware of claims that Niglon had been making regarding its MEDIAN products in comparison to Scolmore’s MODE products. Scolmore subsequently sued Niglon for the infringement of Scolmore’s registered trademarks and for passing off its own goods as those of Scolmore. Following the settlement of the lengthy legal case, Niglon has paid substantial damages and costs to Scolmore and has apologised, with undertakings having been given by Niglon to the court to not repeat the infringements. In a statement about the settlement which has been published by Niglon, the company accepted that its actions had amounted to trademark infringement and passing off, which it said it regretted and it further stated that it will not in future make any comparisons of the quality, source or origin of its products with Scolmore’s products. Niglon also confirmed that it agrees that its products are not made in the same factory or by use of the same moulds as those of Scolmore. Scolmore, scolmore.com

JTL AND EIC TO DEVELOP MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS COURSES

RECOLIGHT LAUNCHES GAME-CHANGING PLATFORM TO REDUCE WASTE Recolight has launched its Reuse Hub, a new digital marketplace for lighting. It is an online platform that will facilitate the donation of new and used lighting products and equipment. Currently, there are considerable volumes of new and used lighting products that are needlessly recycled when they could be reused. Some are in very good condition before removal and, therefore, a lot of the value and embedded carbon is lost if they are recycled. Many manufacturers hold unsold stock, surplus new lighting taking up valuable warehouse space. Recolight wants to make it as easy as possible for companies to hand over surplus and used products to third-parties, who can put them to good use. The Recolight Reuse Hub allows donors of such products to link up with potential companies that could use the donated products. Donors can offer both unused, unsold lighting stock and used but reusable lighting equipment that may be suitable for remanufacturing, including those from CAT A and fit-outs. Any type of organisation can sign up, including manufacturers, remanufacturers, specifiers, end users, charities, and more. Even those lighting producers that are not yet members of the Recolight compliance scheme may participate. Companies can register as donors, recipients, or both, and the Reuse Hub is currently free of charge for both donors and recipients.

JTL has supported the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) to develop its new online learning platform, Mental Health for All: Training for mental health wellbeing. Recognising the impact that mental health concerns can have on those working in the electrical industry, EIC has launched a free online learning platform, offering a wide variety of mental health training courses and live interactive webinars. All courses are designed to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively navigate mental health challenges, both personally and professionally. During the building of the platform, JTL has supported EIC with scripting some of the courses and resources and contributed towards the development costs. Staff and apprentices from JTL were also involved in the national pilot phase to provide invaluable feedback that has helped shape the platform. The new platform is accessible online, allowing convenient mobile access to resources that provide essential skills for managing stress and offer help to those in need. JTL, jtltraining.com

INDUSTRY NEWS A FIFTH OF TRADESPEOPLE INJURED WHEN BREAKING HEALTH AND SAFETY RULES

WALLBOX AND OCTOPUS ENERGY PARTNER TO REDUCE CHARGING COSTS IN THE UK

New research from Direct Line reveals almost one in five (19%) tradespeople have been injured as a result of breaking health and safety rules on site. The scale of health and safety breaches is concerning, with 46% of tradespeople admitting they do not always take the required precautions when conducting work. For many tradespeople, there is a lack of awareness of the relevant health and safety regulations, with 45% saying they are not fully aware of, or regularly updating themselves on, relevant legislation. Two-fifths (39%) of tradespeople say that there is not always an emphasis on making sure junior colleagues or trainees know how to follow health and safety rules, dangerously combining a lack of experience with a lack of training. When asked whether they would pull up a colleague if they were not following a serious rule, just 60% said that they would step in. Alison Traboulsi, Product Manager at Direct Line Business Insurance, comments, “Health and safety training in some businesses is inadequate, with staff suffering injuries as a result. It is important to stress the importance of this training and not treat it as an optional part of the job – it is a core part of the business’s responsibility to its employees.

Wallbox has announced a strategic partnership with Octopus Energy Group that will enable all Wallbox customers to join the Intelligent Octopus Go tariff by integrating through their Pulsar Max, the smart home charger designed to unlock time and money for EV drivers. Intelligent Octopus Go is a smart EV charging tariff that unlocks significant savings for EV drivers – cars are charged when the grid is cheapest, and usually greenest. It offers an innovative solution for combating climate change and catering to eco-conscious energy consumers. Switching to this system can save EV drivers more than £600 annually with smart charging rates and home energy efficiency. The Intelligent Octopus Go app allows users to schedule the time and amount of charge they need their car back with. Octopus’s tech platform, Kraken, then automates charging during peak renewable energy times, preventing millions of tons of CO2 emissions. It optimises the grid, enhancing energy system reliability and stability, while bringing down energy costs for everyone. Wallbox and Octopus will cooperate in reducing charging costs. Intelligent Octopus Go manages the UK’s largest virtual power plant, surpassing the grid’s biggest battery, now at 500MW through electric vehicles.

Court Case Settled: Scolmore (International) Limited and Niglon Limited have settled their dispute over Niglon’s use of Scolmore’s trade marks in relation to its sale of its MEDIAN products. Niglon accepts that this amounted to trade mark infringement and passing off, which it regrets and for which it has paid compensation to Scolmore. Niglon will not in future make any comparisons of the quality, source or origin of its products with Scolmore’s products. Niglon also confirms that its products are not made in the same factory or by use of the same moulds as those of Scolmore.

KNIGHT FRANK AND MER PARTNER TO BRING HIGH POWERED EV CHARGING TO UK COMMERCIAL TENANTS Mer aims to install EV charge points across more than 100 of Knight Frank Investment Management’s (KFIM) client owned sites in the UK. The plan is for Mer to install approximately 450 sockets across the company’s UK-wide portfolio, with a mixture of rapid and ultra-rapid charge points available for public use.

Matt Simmonds at KFIM, says, “After recognising that reliable and future-fit EV charging infrastructure is becoming an increasingly in-demand asset of commercial properties, it was important that we partnered with an experienced charge point operator who understands the complex needs of our portfolio of sites. Mer’s charge points will help us provide an essential service to our tenants and visitors, and

we are looking forward to working with Mer in the roll out of charging infrastructure in the coming months.” Mer will begin in 2023 with 14 of KFIM client sites, which will each have six charging bays offering ultra-rapid charging. Mer, uk.mer.eco

Naked Energy’s TÜV-certified Virtu technology is estimated to reduce more than three times the greenhouse gases per square metre, compared to traditional solar PV panels. While American colleges broadly outrank their UK counterparts in sustainability targets, dozens of leading US schools still rely heavily on fossil fuels to heat and cool their campuses – with some emitting carbon at higher rates than a typical commercial power plant. The innovative approach with Virtu to water heating at Creighton University’s newest dorm delivers a clean energy benchmark for campuses across the country. Naked Energy, nakedenergy.com

CONTRACT NEWS THE ARK HAMMERSMITH REIMAGINED The Ark Hammersmith, located in West London, has recently been reimagined. Originally opening in the 1990’s, today the Ark stands as a modern and vibrant complex, housing a blend of residential, commercial and retail spaces. The project’s success hinged on the innovative use of lighting to create a contemporary atmosphere reminiscent of deluxe hospitality venues. LEDFlex, in collaboration with Lichtvision, played a central role in bringing the office project to life. Lichtvision’s lighting design drew inspiration from circadian rhythms, seamlessly integrating these principles to maximise natural daylight through the glazing, providing bright, energising lighting during the day and soothing illumination at night. The Ark had already achieved heritage status due to its initial design success, necessitating the preservation of the existing exterior lighting scheme; hence it was mainly in the public areas where LEDflex truly shone. For the interiors, careful attention was paid to balancing natural and artificial lighting. Despite the transformation, the building still retains its iconic silhouette, resembling a modern interpretation of the biblical Ark. LEDFlex, ledflexgroup.com

NORTH LONDON HEAT AND POWER PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION Edwin James Group is nearing completion of a project to assist the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) in its £1.42-£1.52 billion North London Heat and Power Project. The project aims to create the greenest energy recovery facility in the country, along with state-of-the-art recycling facilities. Working together, group companies EJ Parker Technical Services and EJ Peak Technology Solutions delivered complex projects totalling over £37 million, covering comprehensive mechanical and electrical (M&E) services, extensive automation and control implementation and the largest solar array in North London. EJ Parker Technical Services was responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of lighting, venting and AC, security and fire suppression, waste management, and rainwater collection. The team also installed 2,235 solar modules and 11 Solis Inverters that will produce renewable energy, equivalent to powering 300 homes a year. The implementation of this sustainable energy solution is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 334,602kg per year, equivalent to the impact of planting 8,830 trees annually. Edmonton EcoPark is a waste management site of approximately 38 acres. The existing Energy from Waste facility is coming to the end of its life, having served North London for over 50 years. The redevelopment aims to generate electricity for 127,000 homes, provide hot water and heating for 60,000, and improve air quality using advanced technology, saving the carbon equivalent of removing 110,000 cars annually.

TURNING NORWICH BUSES GREEN UK Power Networks is installing new underground cables and equipment at a Norwich substation, so that the Roundtree Way bus depot can be fully upgraded to power electric buses, cut carbon emissions and improve air quality in the city. The project is part of UK Power Networks’ Green Recovery programme, which is investing £66 million across 85 sites, to fast-track low carbon energy projects that will help the UK achieve net zero by 2050. The work will enable First Bus to run 70 new electric buses in Norwich by the end of March next year. Piers Marlow, Managing Director of First East of England, says, “The electrification of Roundtree Way is a critical part of the project that will see 70 new electric buses serving Norwich. “The electric buses will not only improve the journey experience for our customers, they will significantly reduce carbon emissions, each saving up to 60 tonnes per year, and will improve air quality for the city, creating a cleaner, greener environment for people to live, work and enjoy.” UK Power Networks, ukpowernetworks.co.uk

CONTRACT NEWS SUSTAINABLE LIGHTING SCHEME PROTECTS DARK SKIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT Working with The Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads, Acrospire has delivered Victorian styled lanterns to create a picturesque setting at the heart of the Ryde Interchange scheme. The Isle of Wight is renowned for its pristine natural beauty and minimal light pollution, making it an ideal destination for stargazing enthusiasts. However, the Isle of Wight Council recognises the importance of preserving its dark skies, and aims to reduce light pollution and achieve official Dark Skies status for the island. The Ryde Interchange is used by Wightlink’s FastCat service passengers between Ryde and Portsmouth, Hovertravel’s hovercraft flights between Ryde and Southsea, and rail passengers using IslandLine trains. The interchange is also the location of Southern Vectis’ busy Ryde Bus Station. The project also involved the creation of a dedicated cycleway through Ryde Esplanade, a new taxi rank and other public realm improvements. Here, Road Island’s challenge lay in finding a lighting solution that met the demanding performance standards and retained the area’s Victorian charm and character due to its conservation status. For the project, Acrospire’s delivered 68 luminaires for the multi-million-pound Ryde Interchange project, creating a well-lit environment along Ryde Esplanade that blended seamlessly with the area’s heritage.

The selected luminaries were chosen to match the styling of the original lanterns and included Streetcare and Birkdale in a warm 3000K colour temperatures to meet dark sky friendly criteria. Streetcare is a compact post top lantern that offers versatile symmetrical and asymmetric photometric options. To cater to the conservation requirements, the lanterns were supplied with pressed ‘leaf’ embellishments, providing a classic heritage appearance.

Complementing the Streetcare luminaires, Birkdale lanterns are mounted on decorative twin and single brackets, adding to the local charm. Birkdale offers up to 75% energy savings on traditional HID installations. Both lanterns were compatible with the chosen City Touch CMS, further enhancing the efficiency of the new lighting scheme. TCLARKE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS LAUNCHES WITH MAJOR WIN TClarke is launching Alternative Energy Solutions to help building owners improve EPC ratings for old buildings, meet climate targets, improve their carbon footprint and, critically, make newly available technologies a practical option. The launch is also marked by the announcement of a major alternative energy contract win and one of the very first commercial building energy upgrades on this scale – helping 30 Fenchurch Street substantially improve its EPC rating, within a holistic programme of design works and technology installation. The project was taken from a stage 2 through to a stage 4a design, and during this process the original plant concept was reviewed and re-designed with performance improvements and enhancements. This was achieved with the implementation of new simultaneous four pipe heating and cooling Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs), along with additional air-cooled chillers to be provided to the roof area. This enabled the original existing water-cooled chillers in the basement and the cooling towers on the roof to be decommissioned and removed. These new capital plant improvements enabled the property’s EPC rating to improve – all with zero impact to the tenant’s business operations.

Property investment and development company, Glenbrook Investments has partnered with Be.EV to install four new ultra-rapid electric car chargers at St Mary’s Retail Park in Rochdale. The eight bay charging hub is equipped with cutting-edge Kempower chargers, which can charge a typical EV to 80% in as little as 20 minutes, compared to four to six hours on a 7kW fast charger. Thanks to the site’s two 550kW power banks, the site is 10 times faster than the chargers currently available in Rochdale. The chargers keep track of the charge level for each vehicle and use load balancing technology to distribute power to those that require it the most. Each charger is equipped with a QR code, which allows drivers to monitor their charge levels from their mobile whilst shopping. Switched on and now available for use, the project sees Glenbrook join the largest public EV charging network that is connecting communities across the North of England and boasts impressive reliability (99.6% operational availability across the entire network).

TRAINING

SPARKING KNOWLEDGE IN THE ELECTRICAL SECTOR Hager UK explains the importance of adopting technology, shares how online learning platforms can enhance employee retention, and explores why training and development should be a high priority on the agenda for businesses.

W

ith the introduction of government targets to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the electrical sector is certainly in the spotlight. Forward-thinking professionals are leading the way into a bright future by developing, manufacturing and investing in the latest solutions to ensure the industry stays on track to reach these ambitious aims. That said, Deloitte’s 2023 Energy, Resources, and Industrials Industry Outlook Report outlined that recruiting and retaining highly skilled staff is proving challenging. Many businesses have a number of roles unfilled and are reporting high turnover rates at a time when business stability, growth and nurturing in-house expertise is essential. Long-term solutions include enticing ex-employees back to the industry, as well as encouraging fresh talent to emerge onto the scene. But what can electrical employers do in the meantime to bridge this gap and ensure they remain at the very top of their game? Hager UK explores why adopting technology is the solution for the electrical industry – now and for future generations. Plus, the company explains why professionals working within the sector need to proactively and regularly participate in training and development to enhance their understanding of emerging products and trends:

An online platform allows contractors to access training at a time most suitable to them

22 | November 2023

Training (Hager).indd 22

“We understand ‘fit and forget’ products are popular among busy contractors. The same ease and simplicity should apply across the sector – whether we’re talking about obtaining a quote, sourcing materials, or participating in training and development. “If training isn’t available at a time and place which suits the learner, it becomes less of a priority. Professionals in this industry don’t have time to take huge chunks out of their day (or week) in order to learn about new industry developments or explore new ways of working. It can even become a logistical nightmare if the entire team is expected to be ‘out of office’ simultaneously. “With mobile phones an essential part of an electrician’s toolkit, the digital world is at our fingertips. So, it’s increasingly making sense for training providers to offer online solutions as the pocket-sized partner to learning. “An online platform allows contractors to access training at a time most suitable to them, and enables them to progress at their own pace. One of your team may want to learn while enjoying their morning brew, while another would prefer to take on information at the end of the day. This is a fantastic alternative to that same person having to take half a day for that very same session – not only due to time savings and convenience, but also enhancing flexibility. “But, it’s not just about when and where they’d rather work, each of us has a unique learning preference – whether it’s visual, audio or kinaesthetic (or a mixture). One size does not fit all. Tailoring learning to suit your bespoke style ensures it is effectively and appropriately understood and retained. Encompassing these styles through a variety of mediums – including text, videos, and end-of-module quizzes – promotes accessibility and inclusivity. Plus, it can increase independence, confidence and motivation, through having

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

the ability to re-read or redo sections without holding others up or feeling embarrassed to ask questions. “Recent research has revealed that offering online learning can increase employee retention by up to 50%, and additional reports outline that up to 60% of this information is better consolidated. Moreover, 73% of students admit to preferring online learning due to being able to work at their own pace. Teams are knowledgeable, motivated, kept up-to-date, and they’re happy, confident and loyal. “Plus, online platforms allow for greater flexibility in terms of participation. For those with lots of experience, it may be a case of refreshing their memory, whereas you may want new starters to go through a much more in-depth training process. “At Hager UK, we believe that when it comes to learning, having a dedicated platform combining information, advice and support is essential. Which is why we’ve launched Hager Academy Online. It’s designed to support professionals with fine-tuning their existing skills and helping them to absorb new knowledge to further their career and enhance business growth. “Accessible 24/7 and on-the-go means that training can be refreshed or topped-up with ease, whenever you have 10 minutes spare or need help, support and guidance. The course contents have been designed by our training experts who boast more than 50 years of combined industry experience. Whether you want tailored technical knowledge or to boost your understanding of Hager products – there’s something for everyone. Following course completion, a free industry-recognised certificate will be issued.” You can sign up for your first course on the Hager UK website. Hager UK, hager.com

KEY ISSUE

STUDY: OVER TWO MILLION NEW JOBS CAN BE CREATED DURING THE TRANSITION TO NET ZERO BUILDINGS Schneider Electric, together with Boston University, has announced a first-of-its-kind study that finds that more than two million new jobs and up to 141 million additional job years can be created in Europe and the United States by adopting clean energy technologies in new and retrofitted buildings. The results come from a research collaboration between the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) and the Schneider Electric Sustainability Research Institute (SRI).

T

he open-access paper, ‘Building a Green Future: Examining the Job Creation Potential of Electricity, Heating, and Storage in Low-Carbon Buildings’, is the first to estimate job creation in low carbon ‘buildings of the future’ at such a granular level. Taking a micro-scale view, the study estimates the global employment outcomes for low carbon building archetypes spanning residential, hospital, hotel, office, retail, and education in regions of North America, Europe and Asia. The data focused specifically on the potential around deploying rooftop solar panels, heat pumps, and energy storage batteries for self-produced (or prosumer) renewable energy. These low carbon technologies – all of which are readily available today – support the electrification and digitalisation of the buildings sector, which is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. The study’s job estimates will be fully realised over time in alignment with global net zero goals targeting 2050, making this a reasonable timeline for 100% renovation of eligible buildings. “It is increasingly clear that, thanks to modern technologies, it is now feasible to rapidly transition buildings to net zero,” explains Vincent Petit, Senior Vice President of Climate and Energy Transition Research at Schneider Electric and Head of the SRI. “What we often do not realise is that such a transition comes with significant socioeconomic benefits. This research is another demonstration of this fact.”

Key findings

Job creation potential depends on both the region and type of building. For residential buildings, approximately 0.05 jobs can be created per building. For commercial buildings, it ranges between 0.3 and 4.7 jobs each. Due to the number of combined residential and commercial buildings, the job creation potential surpasses millions. Europe envisions substantial job creation, with specific figures indicating the potential workforce growth in several key countries. France could potentially generate 295,000 jobs, closely followed by Germany with 257,000 jobs, Italy with 252,000 jobs, the UK with 247,000 jobs, Spain with 212,000 jobs, and the Netherlands with 66,000 jobs.

24 | October 2023

Key Issue (Schneider).indd 24

It is now feasible to rapidly transition buildings to net zero

Significant job creation is anticipated across various regions of the United States, with 182,000 potential jobs created in the West region, while the Midwest is projected to see an increase of 18,900 jobs. In the Northeast, 123,000 jobs are anticipated, and the South and Southeast regions are poised for substantial growth, with an estimated 319,000 jobs. The greatest job creation potential is in using heat pumps for large buildings and battery storage in regions and building types with surplus solar energy. For heat pumps, solar PV and batteries, the largest share of job years comes from construction and installation. The research expands on two recent findings from the SRI that demonstrates over 60% carbon emissions reduction can also be achieved when implementing these low carbon solutions, and up to 70% when deploying digital building and power management solutions in existing office buildings. “Employment is often a polarising topic at the centre of the transition to a net zero economy, mired in uncertainty about

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

emerging opportunities in green energy,” states Benjamin Sovacool, Director, Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability and Professor, Earth & Environment, College of Arts & Sciences. “This study brings greater detail to the sizable potential for new jobs created by low carbon buildings, a compelling co-benefit of decarbonisation that could have the power to ease social and economic concerns and positively shape climate policy.” These findings can drive significant benefits in the near term, making the detailed estimations useful for informing companies, communities, and governments seeking to engage in building projects. For policymakers, understanding the potential that the transition to net zero living can have on creating jobs could potentially incentivise sceptics to favour a green energy shift. For business decision makers, job estimates can improve forecasts around scope, investment, lifecycle management and impact for building projects. PROJECT FOCUS

HARMONISING ARCHITECTURE AND ILLUMINATION FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND AESTHETIC BRILLIANCE Zumtobel and its sister brand Thorn have collaborated with 5plus architects, MZA Consultants, Ardmac, Emtec and Rexel to implement an energy efficient lighting scheme at the iconic 100 Barbirolli Square. The Zumtobel Group’s innovative lighting solutions successfully met the brief, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the building.

B

arbirolli Square holds historical significance as the birthplace of the renowned Hallé orchestra. Founded by conductor and cellist, John Barbirolli, the orchestra quickly gained international recognition for its diverse talent and artistic excellence. Today, 100 Barbirolli Square symbolises this triumph of creativity and resilience during a time of global conflict. The Zumtobel Group Lighting brands played a pivotal role in the £20 million upgrade of the prominent 1990s office block in Manchester. The three-year project involved a complete refurbishment of the 150,000ft2 building, across 12 floors, including reception spaces. The aim was to create a visually appealing lighting design that utilised exposed services, while reducing energy consumption.

Incorporating sustainability

The refurbishment project at 100 Barbirolli Square also prioritised sustainability and occupant wellbeing. The design features a sophisticated and understated style, with exposed concrete, poured concrete flooring, raw polished plaster, natural materials, and air purifying plants. Moreover, the

also used in the basement plant, back-ofhouse and cores. The use of LED technology and intelligent controls significantly reduced energy consumption, aligning with the project’s sustainability goals. Emmet McAteer, 5plus architects, says, “Our aim was to strip the building back to its frame and design a high-specification environment that meets the needs of modern occupiers. The lighting solution provided by the Zumtobel Group perfectly complements the architecture. The SLOTLIGHT infinity ID not only delivers exceptional lighting performance, but also enhances the visual aesthetics of the space. It beautifully integrates with the exposed services, creating a seamless and harmonious design.”

introduction of a large cycle hub with changing rooms directly accessible from the street encourages alternative and sustainable transportation options. A flexible studio/gym and spacious changing rooms were included to promote the health and wellbeing of the building’s users.

A lighting solution to match the building aspirations

Working closely with the architect and consultant, Zumtobel developed a comprehensive lighting solution for the project. Central to the scheme was its newly launched SLOTLIGHT infinity ID, which perfectly matched the design aesthetic and provided excellent lighting performance. The SLOTLIGHT infinity ID, known for its wide-angle uplighting, ensured there were no hotspots on the ceiling, enhancing the overall visual appeal. The warm 3000K colour temperature created a cosy atmosphere against the concrete soffits, contributing to the building’s inviting ambience. Additionally, other Zumtobel products, including PANOS infinity-P R70, Comsign, RESCLITE PRO, and SUPERSYSTEM integral, were strategically installed in different areas of the building. Thorn Lighting’s Aquaforce Pro and Chalice were

Impressive results

The lighting installation at 100 Barbirolli Square delivered impressive results in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. Lighting traditionally accounts for approximately upwards of 25% of the energy used in an office building. Here the use of the Zumtobel Group’s LED luminaires and intelligent controls reduces this by more than 50%, limiting the environmental impact. The following statistics highlight the overall project’s success: •  Embodied carbon saving: 71% over an equivalent new building •  Whole life carbon saving: 20% over an equivalent new building •  EPC Rating: B

INTERVIEW

STRAP IN, MYENERGI’S COMING! Carly Weller speaks to Jordan Brompton, Co-Founder and CMO of myenergi about her career so far, life at myenergi, and the company’s plans for the future. CW: Tell us about yourself and how you got into the sector

The industry is rife with innovation and new tech

JB: I’m an entrepreneur, angel investor and passionate sustainability expert, but I’m probably best known for founding myenergi in 2016 alongside my good friend Lee Sutton. In just a few short years, we’ve built one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy tech businesses – renowned for designing and manufacturing first-to-market products like the solar-compatible zappi EV charger. To be honest, I got into the sector almost by accident. Having left school at 16, I tried my hand at almost everything to see what captivated me. From hairdressing and radio presenting to waitressing and even selling on the local markets, I wanted to find a career that I got excited about. But try as I might, nothing stuck. Nothing captivated me. I felt like a round peg in a square hole. Underutilised, unfulfilled, uninspired. That is, until I took a chance sales role at a small renewable tech startup run, conveniently, by Lee. The business was small, but Lee had created some incredible products that he was selling to electrical wholesalers all over the UK. The whole thing fascinated me – the people, the innovation, the imagination and the passion. I immediately fell in love with the industry and knew it was the perfect home. While the business fell victim to the widely publicised ‘solar coaster’, I’d found my calling. When the opportunity came up to start a new venture in the sector, I knew we could create something special. It’s fair to say that the rest is history!

CW: For those who may not know, can you give us an overview of the work that myenergi does? JB: myenergi has a simple ambition – to leave the planet in a better place than we found it. We want to build a business renowned for driving sustainable change, removing the barriers to renewable energy adoption and pioneering the future of sustainable tech. In reality, the big idea came from a conversation over a bottle of wine. Lee and I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a product on the market that allowed users to charge their electric vehicle from the solar PV panels installed on their roof. Instead, they were forced to export their green energy to the grid and then buy it back at a premium price in a format that could be used to charge their car. We didn’t have the money to undertake extensive market research, or spend millions of dollars on focus groups, so we just went on Google. We couldn’t find any competitor products past the end of page two, so came to the conclusion that no-one else was trying to solve the problem. Mad, right!? From there, we’ve developed and launched a first-to-market suite of eco-smart renewable energy products that help consumers to save money, reduce their reliance on the grid and maximise the use of renewable energy within the home. Our zappi EV charger was the start, but we now also manufacture products that enable users to store energy, power their heating devices with 100% green electricity and much, much more!

Jordan Brompton, Co-Founder and CMO of myenergi

CW: Tell us about your current role – what are you responsible for and what does the normal working day consist of? JB: As Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), I’m responsible for leading the sales and marketing departments, driving business development and facilitating corporate partnerships. Simply put, it’s my role to build the myenergi brand both in the UK and internationally, position us as a leader in eco-smart home energy tech and showcase the groundbreaking innovation that we’re bringing to market. It’s fair to say that my typical working day is therefore a little hectic! Whether onboarding a new partnership, delivering a keynote in front of thousands of industry professionals, or announcing a new product launch, my diary is always bursting. CW: What are the best parts of your role? What are the most challenging? JB: As an entrepreneur, I love the hard grind. I find every part of running a business energising, challenging and rewarding in equal measure. Yes, you have the ups and downs, but the energy you get from every day is infectious! The biggest challenge is always reacting to the unexpected – navigating component shortages, legislative changes, supply chain disruptions or complete curve balls like the COVID-19 pandemic. In these situations, it’s high pressure. You need to make decisions quickly and you need to trust your gut. It’s not something that anyone looks forward to, but these are the scenarios that make or break your business.

INTERVIEW

We’ve recently completed the second build phase at our eco headquarters in Stallingborough, which has seen a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility added to the growing site. This will see our entire production operations relocate – not an easy task, but a key milestone in our impressive growth journey. It feels as though we’ve already come so far, but it’s amazing to think that the journey has really only just begun. Strap in, we’re coming! CW: Do you have any career advice for women starting out in the industry? JB: Traditionally, it’s fair to say that the sector hasn’t been the most inviting for women. While there’s huge progress still needed, it’s positive to see that we’re moving forward and things have come a long way. For every one person that will tell you that you can’t, two will tell you that you can. Don’t get me wrong – it’s still an uphill battle and you’ll have to fight far harder than you should need to, but it’s an inspiring sector to be part of, and it really is a career for life.

However, the pressures and the challenges pale into insignificance when you consider the upsides. The indescribable feeling of launching a new product, the pride when you see your name in the national press, the humbling experience of winning a prestigious award, or the ‘pinch yourself’ moments like visiting 10 Downing Street for an audience with the Prime Minister. The best part of my role is stopping for breath and looking back at the incredible business that we’ve worked so hard to build – the mountains we’ve moved, the lives we’ve changed and the experiences along the way that we’ll never forget. CW: What in your career are you most proud of? Collaboration is key to driving the industry’s further growth

JB: There are so many contenders jostling for position – shipping our 500,000th unit, landing a major investment from ex-Tesco

CEO Terry Leahy to first take zappi to market, being handed the keys to our Stallingborough headquarters, taking part in a panel discussion alongside Bill Gates… the list goes on! I think though, when it comes down to it, I’m most proud of the moment that I decided to risk it all and start myenergi. Looking back, it was such a brave move – but one that changed my life almost immediately.

The zappi EV charger was the first in myenergi’s suite of eco-smart renewable products

CW: What’s next for you and for myenergi? JB: We recently announced a £30 million capital investment, so I’m not breaking any confidences by saying that we have really big plans for the future. Alongside an ambitious new product development pipeline, we’re committed to accelerating our internationalisation activity and becoming a household name around the world.

CW: What do you think are the most exciting products or technologies coming to the market? JB: The industry is rife with innovation and new tech, but some of the products coming out of myenergi are really game changing. Recently, we launched libbi – our next generation smart battery that helps users to capture surplus green electricity and access it immediately when they need it most. libbi is modular by design, with each module able to store up to 5kWh of electricity. This means that housebuilders can offer an entry point, keeping costs low but providing the opportunity for buyers to increase storage in the future. CW: What do you think should be made a priority for the electrical sector? JB: In my opinion, collaboration is key to driving the industry’s further growth. It’s no secret that the electrical sector is facing the same hurdles as most – an aging workforce, increasing skills gap, lack of talent attraction and challenges when it comes to female representation. There’s a big opportunity for the future, but we need to work together to really make it stick. CW: What are your interests away from work? JB: My daughter Bonnie is my main interest, hobby, past-time and inspiration. I’m doing this all for her – so that she, and her children, and her great grandchildren, have a planet that they can inherit just like we did. Every spare second away from the office is family time. Having that work/life balance is so important and I’m trying my hardest to be an inspiration to her as she grows up. myenergi, myenergi.info

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

ALL YOUR FIRE PROTECTION SOLUTIONS UNDER ONE ROOF Neil Baldwin, Managing Director of ESP, looks at the different types of fire protection solutions available and highlights how ESP’s support for contractors goes way beyond the supply of a comprehensive product range.

F

ire alarm systems are broadly divided into two main groupings – ‘conventional’ fire alarm systems and analogue addressable ‘intelligent’ systems – with each type best suited to different kinds of premises.

Conventional systems

Introducing

MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm systems are aimed at small to medium contractors

Intelligent systems

Addressable or ‘intelligent’ fire alarm systems overcome these limitations and are designed for large commercial premises and more complex networked systems. They are more expensive and more complicated than conventional four-wire systems, having increased flexibility, intelligence, speed of identification, and scope of control. In addressable systems, different types of initiating devices are wired in one or more single loops around the premises,

requiring less cabling than conventional systems, with each detector or call point having its own unique address. The fire control panel receives information and status reports from each device and indicates its exact location if there is a fault, contamination or activation via smoke or heat detection. As these control panels have become more sophisticated and more powerful, they are capable of handling an increasing number of loops per panel and it is possible to network numerous panels together to increase the capacity.

www.espuk.com

Conventional, or four-wire, fire alarm systems have been traditionally used in smaller properties, such as shops and restaurants. They work by dividing the building into a number of detection zones, with the detectors and call points within each zone hardwired on dedicated two-core cable to the control panel. There may be multiple detectors in a single zone. A separate two-core, fire-protected cable for the alarm’s sounders is required, as they are wired on different circuits. If a detector is activated, the control panel identifies the circuit that contains the triggered device and so indicates the zone from which the fire alarm has originated, but the area then has to be manually searched to pinpoint the individual device. Because the majority of conventional detectors are simple, two state devices, they can only be in either a normal or fire condition. Although modern components and quality system design can play a part in reducing potential problems, it is not uncommon for conventional systems to generate unwanted alarms. As such, conventional systems are not suitable in large buildings which could potentially have over 50 zones in order to correctly protect the property to the prevailing industry standards. A conventional system would prove a costly and time-consuming exercise.

Two-wire technology

Two-wire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. However, unlike standard conventional four-wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, the new intelligent two-wire technology allows all devices to be wired on the same set of two-core zone cables back to the control panel – enabling it to use a single circuit per zone, both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material cost.

From an initial enquiry to discuss the requirements, the next stage will be one of information and measurement gathering. For larger and more complex design schemes, a visit to site will be carried out for a detailed survey. With all the relevant information gathered, including drawings and specifications, a suitable design proposal for a fire system will be created and supplied to the client, along with a quotation. Two-way interaction between customer and the ESP design team throughout the process will be of paramount importance to ensure the design scheme meets all the necessary requirements.

design service. BAFE is the independent registration body for Third Party Certified fire safety service providers across the UK, and ESP now appears on the National BAFE Fire Safety Register. BAFE manages and maintains a scheme called BAFE SP203-1 which covers Fire Detection and Alarm Systems. This scheme exists to deliver quality, independent evidence that providers – like ESP – are competent to deliver fire system designs for its fire detection and alarm systems. ESP is only permitted to become BAFE Registered and appear on the national BAFE Fire Safety Register once the company holds the appropriate/valid Third-Party Certification. ESP continues to meet the criteria of the relevant BAFE Scheme. This establishes robust evidence of competency requirements that demonstrates the provider’s commitment to quality. It also provides assurances to ESP’s customers that the company will deliver a fire system design that complies with all the relevant British Standards.

Complete package

With these latest developments, contractors can now take advantage of a full fire systems package from ESP, which gives them access to a design service, a vast choice of products including the latest two-wire systems, the new commissioning service, plus technical support from a team of qualified and experienced operators. ADVANCED FIRE PROTECTION FLIPS THE SCRIPT FOR ICONIC FORMER FILM STUDIO A shared use office and retail space at the landmark former home of British Pathé is now being protected by Advanced.

A

new Advanced fire alarm system with phased evacuation was commissioned by 360Fire, as part of a wider restoration and refurbishment project, which will see the creation of a number of workspaces, including private offices, office suites and full floors, alongside social areas and retail units. Located at 142 Wardour Street, Soho, Film House, was once at the heart of London’s ‘film row’. By the late 1940s, it’s estimated that up to 100 film companies occupied the street, including Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox.

Originally the site of Faraday Electrical Works, the office building was rebuilt in 1929 in the Art Deco style

Originally the site of Faraday Electrical Works, the office building was re-built in 1929 in the Art Deco style. Over its long history, it has acted as the headquarters for several iconic British businesses, including the Associated-British Pathé film company, and, later, HMV. Taking design responsibility for the project, 360Fire worked with Mechanical Services (MSL), who installed four, four-loop Advanced MxPro 5 panels and one repeater panel, alongside Hochiki detectors, covering all six tenanted floors of the building. Selected for their open-protocol nature, the panels are integrated with a voice alarm system allowing for phased

evacuation, with lifts operating on a dual signal to the ground or alternative floor, depending on fire location. An out of hours override activated via the panel’s function button cancels the phased evacuation and enables the system to revert to a ‘one out all out’ system with no delays. Further integration with the building’s BMS enables control over sprinklers, door access, lifts, and smoke vents. The system also makes use of MxPro 5’s stand-out false alarm management capabilities. Available as standard on MxPro 5 panels, AlarmCalm delivers unprecedented control of verification and investigation delays. By dividing sites up into virtual false alarm ‘building areas’ independent of fire zones, much more precise control of false alarm management and reduction strategies can be achieved, that exactly fit the needs of each part of a building. An optional AlarmCalm button allows trained occupants to verify if they believe a local fire signal is a false alarm too – a highly effective way of eliminating unwanted alarms. Chris Peart, Service and Commissioning Manager at 360Fire, says, “This was a complex project and MxPro 5 panels were specifically chosen due to their open protocol nature, flexibility and ease of cause-and-effect programming. Advanced is the market leader and without fail represents the best solution for both the installer and the end user.” MxPro 5 is a multiprotocol fire system solution, approved to EN54 Parts 2, 4 and 13. It offers customers a choice of four detector protocols and a completely open installer network, backed up by free training and support. MxPro 5 panels can be used in single-loop, single-panel format, or easily configured into high-speed networks of up to 200 panels covering huge areas. Ease of installation and configuration, as well as a wide range of peripherals, make MxPro 5 suitable for almost any application.

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

WHAT IS THE REAL RISK OF FIRE FROM SOLAR PANELS? With recent reports of a domestic solar panel exploding on a roof at a West London council house, is there a hidden danger lurking? How does this impact confidence and the growth of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels across both domestic and commercial sectors? Richard Williams, Engineer, Founder and Managing Director of Aztec Solar Energy, shares his views on safety issues facing the sector.

L

But what controls are in place and who is monitoring safety? Some may be shocked to learn that PV installers are not legally bound to follow the guidelines or obtain accreditations from certifying organisations such as the MCS. The big issue is that anyone can install a solar panel in the UK. Yes, work must be cleared by the local council, and the government ‘recommends’ the use of a registered electrician, but it’s not a necessity by law. As with all electrical installations, electrical incidents may happen, which is

FIRE SYSTEM DESIGN SERVICE November feature 40 ECN | November 2023sponsorship Strip ads - Magduo.indd 2

Fire, Safety & Security (Aztec).indd 40

why all electricians are qualified and must undertake regular competency training and ongoing refresher training. Arc faults and faulty wiring can cause solar panels to catch fire and the risk of a solar panel catching fire is very low, but it is not zero. Solar panel fires can be caused by improper installation or maintenance, and by damage from extreme weather events, such as hail or lightning. Higher voltages can be prone to arcing and is a known common cause of fires, but through the installation of micro inverters connected to the panel to convert the output to a safer level, they considerably reduce the risks. As does using reputable and registered PV installers, and like maintaining your car, checks need to be done on all PV installations regularly. PV panels are often forgotten about and left to deteriorate and with those systems come risks, as with any neglected equipment. It’s important to be up-to-date with the latest safety recommendations and regulations, and as with all things new, products evolve. Technologies continue to develop and with that have come new solar panels that are more resilient and offer an even greater reduction in fire risks. Understanding

these products and their installation comes from experience and working in an evolving sector and with experts who can recommend the most appropriate panels and systems for installation. The first step would simply be to ensure those installing your PV system and/or battery storage are registered with the MCS and that the system has been installed in accordance with IET guidance. This will verify the competence of the installer and the installer is duty-bound to use verified products, so ensuring safety and quality. Anyone concerned about their PV systems should seek further advice and consider retrofitting a micro inverter AC system or module level optimisation. Look at the maintenance programme and ensure the system has been checked through periodic testing and by a professional. If at all worried and you suspect signs of overheating, isolate the supply and call the installer. As with all technologies that have been installed effectively and are maintained and managed, be assured that solar PV panels will deliver clean, cost-effective power safely. www.espuk.com

ast year, primarily due to the energy price crisis and a sustainability drive, the solar power industry saw a significant jump in solar PV installations. According to data from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) – the standards organisation for solar energy and heating – 130,596 solar panels were mounted on UK rooftops in 2022. This figure represented growth in one year that was previously only experienced in the three years between 2019 to 2021 combined, with the exception of those years following subsidy changes. These figures include all solar PV systems with a generating capacity of up to 50kW and registered with the MCS, notably therefore the figure is likely to be even higher, with an increasing number of installations in the UK not registered at all. It does mean there are over 1.3 million registered solar power installations across the country, two-thirds on the ground and the remainder on residential and commercial roofs, generating at least 15GW of solar power in the UK. PV solar panels promise cost savings in terms of energy bills and are described as clean and green electric energy. Seen in many a field and rooftop, the growth of the solar PV panel has been significant and is changing the energy landscape.

FIRE, SAFETY & SECURITY

UWE TURN UP THE HEAT ON KITCHEN SAFETY Prefect Controls was approached by the University of the West of England (UWE) to provide a solution that would prevent any incidents leading to the activation of fire alarms.

C

hris Shellard is a Project Manager and the Maintenance Supervisor for student accommodation at UWE. He is responsible for the day-to-day running of heating, lighting, access and other practical aspects to ensure students are comfortable and safe across the 3,000+ rooms. Safety, and in particular kitchen safety, is top of his priorities. National statistics suggest that across the 1.7 million rooms within the UK student accommodation estate, there are the equivalent of five fires every week during a typical academic term. 80% of these taking place in kitchens*. Chris explains, “Although not a common occurrence, we perhaps have a kitchen incident, once a year at UWE. Fortunately, our smoke detection and fire alarms prevent its escalation.”

Even so, Chris and his team searched for additional surety in terms of a preventative device that would avoid any incident causing fire alarms to be activated. They use a building energy management system, and Chris spoke to Prefect Controls, the company behind the heating control, Irus, to see if they had any suggestions. The response was HobSensus – a product launched in 2021, designed specifically for the student accommodation market. HobSensus reduces the risk of kitchen fires as it prevents hobs from being left switched on when the kitchen is unattended. It has a timer with 15, 20, 30 or 120-minute run times – enough for most pan-based meals to be cooked. When the time elapses, should the person preparing the food forget to turn the hob off, the power will be automatically cut. The clever part is the 64-zone sensor that ‘watches’ the cooking surface, measuring the temperature in each zone.

HobSensus reduces the risk of kitchen fires

If the heat approaches a dangerous level, an audible warning is sounded and the green active lights begin to flash amber. If no action is taken and the temperature continues to rise, the warning sound becomes more intense and the lights flash red. Then, before flashpoint is reached, the power is cut to the hob. Chris initiated the introduction of HobSensus to UWE, and since 2021, has installed more than a thousand units across several properties at the Frenchay Campus in Bristol. He continues, “We initially trialled about 100 rooms and it just worked, so we rolled it out across the whole site. Since installation, touch wood, we haven’t had any fire incidents at all! When installed mid-term, we had to explain why there was a change happening to some students, and show them what to do, but Prefect provided a sticker that goes next to the unit with operating instructions and a QR code that takes you to a video explaining why and how, etc. It’s easy to use – just press the red button, then carry on as usual. With new intakes of students, they don’t question it as they realise it’s for their benefit and they just get on with it.” HobSensus integrates with Irus to enable other features. From the secure portal, managers can check the battery level of any units that are not hard-wired to their power units, check on power usage of individual hobs, and view a trigger log to see if there are kitchens where the unit is activated more often than usual. HobSensus can also connect to detection pads that will alert the portal to leaking water in the kitchen. Fire and smoke alarm systems can also integrate HobSensus. In the event of the need to evacuate a site, the system will automatically turn all the hobs off as kitchens are hurriedly cleared. Chris concludes, “Installation went very well and was straightforward, considering most rooms were occupied. Prefect gave us a schedule and stuck to it, and they have very good aftercare, with training, issue solving and providing instructions, videos and all those kinds of things. Automation of this kind just makes my job a bit easier.” Prefect Controls, prefectcontrols.com

Make kitchens safer. HobSensus prevents hobs from being left on when the person preparing food is distracted or leaves the kitchen. The sensor monitors the pans on the cooking surface and if temperatures reach dangerous levels or the pre-determined ‘on’ time elapses, the power to the hob is cut, resulting in safer kitchens.

SAFETY AND FIRE CONSIDERATIONS WHEN INSTALLING POWER OVER ETHERNET Andrew Sedman RCDD, Head of Technical Support & Training, R&M, looks at the importance of following best practices in installing Power over Ethernet (PoE) to prevent fire hazards and ensure safe and efficient operation. PoE simplifies the installation and management of smart technologies

While PoE simplifies installations and reduces the need for additional wiring, it’s important to follow best practices to prevent fire hazards and ensure safe and efficient operation. R&M has compiled several practical tips. Adhering to these best practices is a good start to minimising risk associated with PoE deployments and ensuring installations are safe and efficient. By planning in the appropriate way and choosing suitable products, your cabling system will meet the high requirements of the latest PoE standard – thus enhancing safety and mitigating fire risks.

Observe the standards

PoE can provide power to multiple devices via PoE-ready switches where no power outlets are available

Fire, Safety & Security (R&M).indd 44

First, familiarise yourself with PoE standards such as IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at, among others. These standards outline the specifications for safe power delivery over Ethernet cables and define the supported voltage, power levels and cable types. Be aware that using non-standard equipment or methods can risk equipment safety and reliability and may result in time-consuming and costly re-work and repairs. Make calculations and run tests to make sure the power capacity of PoE switches or injectors is never exceeded. Every device, whether it’s a switch or an injector, has a maximum power budget. Ensure the sum of the power requirements

of all (potentially) connected devices does not surpass this. Many PoE switches are equipped with management features that allow you to monitor the power consumption of each port and this can help identify excessive power draw.

Cabling considerations

Make sure you’re using high quality cables that meet or exceed the recommended standards (such as CAT5e or CAT6 for many PoE applications). Lower quality cables can heat up more easily and may not handle the current as well. Inferior or damaged cables can lead to resistance, causing voltage drops and potential fire hazards. Avoid coiling or bundling cables tightly together, as this can cause heat build-up. Maintain some space between cables, allowing air to circulate. Avoid stretching, bending or crushing Ethernet cables, as this could damage the wires inside and lead to short circuits. Keep cable lengths below the maximum specified distance (usually 100m or 328ft) to ensure power and data integrity. Take steps to avoid power surges. Surge protectors can help protect the data and power lines of PoE equipment in environments where power surges are a concern. Ensuring PoE equipment is properly grounded, especially outdoors, helps prevent electrical surges.

www.espuk.com

P

ower over Ethernet allows electrical power to be transmitted over data cables (typically Ethernet cables) to power devices remotely. Current is provided over wires in the Ethernet twisted-pair cable. This makes it possible to provide power to devices without separate power cabling and outlets. A huge benefit of PoE is the fact that it can provide power to multiple devices via PoE-ready switches where no power outlets are available or power connections are difficult to reach. In the UK, PoE is being adopted in numerous applications. Many modern offices and buildings have integrated smart technologies for things like lighting, heating and security. PoE simplifies the installation and management of these systems. PoE-enabled CCTV cameras and access control systems have become standard in many commercial and some residential settings. Wireless access points, routers, switches and VOIP phones in commercial environments often utilise PoE for flexibility in positioning and to reduce the need for additional wiring and power sources. The original PoE standard supported 12.95W, but the latest version can deliver up to 90W on every PoE port – and this has significant consequences for cabling as temperatures may rise considerably. The greater the power level supplied, the more heat is generated – this, in turn, can affect safety as well as data transfer.

A PoE network requires regular maintenance

channel in any system, with the patch cords in place. To use tested permanent links without surprises, one would need to choose specifically defined patch cords that have been designed to prevent resistance unbalance. For example, patch cords with IDC termination will ensure a reliable, low resistance wire termination over the entire service life of the cord. Although ISO 11801-1 (6.3.3.7. Direct current resistance unbalance) defines maximum resistance unbalance figures, it specifies this element to be tested as optional. Fortunately, test equipment manufacturers are making it possible to go beyond basic requirements described in standards. Various devices now offer options to test for these additional parameters.

Maintenance and documentation Test for resistance unbalance

To ensure long-term reliable network operation, the ISO/IEC 14763-2 and EN 50174-2 cabling standards have been extended to include Remote Power supply categories RP1, RP2 and RP3. These new categories define requirements prior to installation and after commissioning, with the goal of ensuring cabling and PoE keep running safely. An RP category is determined by the average allowable DC current in a cable bundle – the higher the rating, the higher the permissible current. Complying with the ‘Remote Power’ categories is of great importance for fulfilling warranties and preventing expensive, time-consuming equipment replacement and repairs. A ‘Remote Power’ category, according to ISO/IEC 14763-2, needs to be specified for every single installation, and planning, installation and product selection must support the category specified. The ISO/IEC 14763-2 standard specifies that each cable in a bundle must be capable of fully supporting PoE at the highest level. Assurance that the cable bundle will not overheat is essential for achieving category RP3 compliance. With RP3, cabling is configured during the planning phase, so that all cables can transmit the maximum PoE current at the same time. This makes the system especially safe. Network planners must ensure the attenuation budget for data transmission can always be respected with RP3 cabling and that the permissible temperature in the cable is not exceeded. In part, this may be achieved by adjusting link lengths to the installation or using thicker gauge copper.

Introducing

A key challenge introduced by PoE technology is the issue of resistance unbalance. In a PoE system, power is transmitted over two pairs of wires in an Ethernet cable. However, if there is an imbalance in the resistance between cables in a pair, or between cable pairs, unequal voltage drops may occur. As a result, there will be inconsistencies in power delivery. Consequently, when using remote power supply (PoE), resistance symmetry is an absolute precondition. It is, therefore, vital to measure this and ensure it remains stable throughout every channel, end to end. Differences in resistance between cables in the bundle may increase the effective current value and therefore invalidate RP3 certification. What’s more, thermal stress can only be managed if this resistance imbalance is kept to a minimum. Resistance unbalance testing verifies the deviation in resistance between each of the cores in a twisted pair. Testing offers insight into pair resistance unbalance, which expresses how much the DC resistances of the conductors of a pair differ from each other (not the same as the ‘Resistance’ or ‘DC Loop Resistance’ commonly seen in the measurements). Due to the critical nature of resistance unbalance in links requiring remote powering, this test may become mandatory in future editions of the standards. To date, the advice has always been to test the permanent link and then attach standards compliant patch cords. However, this may present problems for PoE, if cords and their connectors present resistance unbalance errors that are not tested as part of the complete channel. Therefore, R&M strongly recommends testing the complete

In short…

Besides allowing for power and data to be transmitted over a single Ethernet cable, reducing the number of cables needed for installation, and reducing the need for power outlets, PoE offers numerous additional benefits. It helps reduce installation costs and saves energy, lowers risks associated with electrical installations thanks to its reduced voltages, supports new technologies, enables centralised monitoring and management, and minimises clutter. By following the steps above, respecting standards, and utilising the right tools, you can effectively plan, build, optimise, map and monitor a PoE network, ensuring its optimal performance, safety and reliability. R&M, rdm.com

Specify Remote Power categories

Of course, like any system, a PoE network requires regular maintenance. Periodically check cables, connectors and devices for signs of wear or damage. It’s also essential to have a means of documenting your entire PoE setup and keeping track of changes. This can help in troubleshooting, vastly reduce Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and ensure that future changes or expansions can be carried out efficiently and safely with minimal re-testing. Network discovery tools can be used to detect all the devices on your network and dedicated systems can be used for PoE monitoring. These can show, for example, the power consumption of each port, warning you when the power budget is exceeded, and providing other PoE-specific metrics. For large or distributed networks, ensure that access capabilities are in place. This allows you to monitor and manage the PoE network from any location.

SMART LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROL

THE TECHNOLOGY TO WATCH FOR Emergency lighting in all public, commercial and high occupancy residential buildings is subject to legal requirements, which entail the regular maintenance and testing of systems. However, these processes can be flawed, putting lives at risk. Chris Anderson, Technical Manager at Ansell Lighting, explains the emerging control and monitoring technology which delivers enhanced reliability and safety for emergency lighting systems.

T

he safety regulations relating to emergency lighting are understandably stringent. Designed to protect occupants when there is sudden darkness caused by a power cut, fire or other circumstance, emergency lighting should provide sufficient light for long enough to enable all occupants to evacuate a building safely. Legally required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, The Health and Safety at Work Act, Building Regulations, The EU Workplace Directive and the Fire Safety Regulations, the rigorous luminous requirements for emergency escape and standby lighting are specified under the European Standard BS EN 1838. There can be tragic consequences if occupants cannot safely escape a building,

48 | November 2023

Smart Lighting & Lighting Control (Ansell Lighting).indd 48

The most common installations to ensure a building can be safely occupied or evacuated when normal illumination fails are escape routes, open area and high-risk task lighting. Commonly, building users can opt for emergency lighting systems that either require manual testing or incorporate self-test products, often stipulated within the design brief. For a manual test, once all lighting circuits and luminaires have been isolated a tester must pass through the whole building or circuit, checking that each emergency luminaire is operating correctly. The mains supply is then restored, and the whole building or circuit must be walked again to check the emergency lights are operational. Self-test lighting systems allow for more cost-effective maintenance. When

particularly in the case of a fire. Yet a lack of sufficient emergency lighting remains a common cause of health and safety cases coming before the courts. A guilty verdict can result in building owners and landlords facing hefty fines, and in worst case scenarios, imprisonment. So, the need to ensure that emergency lighting systems deliver optimum reliability and safety is clearly vital. Emergency light testing is a central part of regular building maintenance and most insurance companies require it. Each building project will have its own specific emergency lighting requirements and new installations will be designed in consultation with the architect, lighting designer or fire risk assessor. In all cases, ease of maintenance and testing should be a key consideration.

the unit is first installed, the fitter will randomly select a test date of between 200 and 365 days. The system will test at the same time every year for a full three-hour test, with an automatic 10 minute test completed every 30 days. A small LED button on the fitting will indicate regular function or that a fault has occurred. Whilst self-test systems clearly have the advantage over manual compliance testing, they remain imperfect. In both

cases, it may not be possible to check luminaires often enough to comply with legal requirements and assess whether emergency lighting systems are up to code, for example, if buildings are unoccupied or being renovated. However, advancements in new technology are set to provide a solution to these problems, making the control and maintenance of emergency lighting systems more straightforward, cost effective and timely.

Dashboards offer central monitoring capability, providing a visual display of a building’s lighting system in one place. They enable all connected emergency lighting systems to be tested wirelessly and automatically at the touch of a button and can highlight remotely whether an individual luminaire or driver is operating outside of expected parameters. Highly efficient, they provide insight and access to emergency lighting systems throughout a building or an estate – not just singular installations – improving the speed of testing and maintenance, and removing the need for costly and time-consuming manual checks. Dashboards are also hugely beneficial when it comes to management and reporting. Alongside providing full real time visibility of compliance status at all times, they store historical test reports and data logs for all connected buildings and systems. This enables those responsible for building maintenance to access information whenever it is required. The use of dashboards is set to become increasingly popular in the emergency lighting arena, but they can be applied equally for all lighting installations, offering enhanced controllability and providing the data required to ensure buildings are operating efficiently. They are certainly the technology to watch for all contractors and installers wishing to deliver safe and efficient lighting systems to their customers. Ansell Lighting, ansell-lighting.com

SMART LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROL

SHEDDING LIGHT ON MODERN LIGHTING CONTROL CABLES In this article, Webro explores the intricacies of modern lighting control cables in the context of smart building design.

L

ighting control cables are the vital connection between lighting devices and control systems in domestic and commercial buildings. They provide residents, owners and managers with control over the lighting system within the living or working environment. They can also be used to provide power. They measure and regulate the transmission of automated processes. Therefore, they’re an important consideration in the overall design of a lighting system. Historically, lighting has been controlled from single or multiple switches located throughout a property. Originally, they only had ‘on/off’ functionality, which later expanded to include a dimmer option that offered variable light output. The default cable was 1.5mm² two-core-and-earth in this regular lighting circuit. Things have changed though. We’re moving at pace to become a better-connected world that’s sustainable, whereby customised solutions such as smart lighting are taking centre stage. Ultimately, lighting and controls will provide the Internet of Things (IoT) backbone that will save energy in smart buildings, reducing their running costs. By employing the right smart lighting control technology, direct-wire LEDs, sensors, and related devices, energy costs can be reduced by more than 70%. Controls are crucial for implementing more intelligence and data connectivity into existing buildings. They take a simple interface and help it to ‘talk’ to standard lighting fixtures, retrofitting these systems

52 | November 2023

Smart Lighting & Lighting Control (Webro).indd 52

Lighting control cables are the vital connection between lighting devices and control systems

and pulling them into a connected lighting system. Once installed, these lighting control systems can easily be updated by both users and developers as new technology comes to the fore. Connected lighting provides an IoT backbone to buildings, breaking down data silos. Just like companies that fail when their teams don’t communicate effectively, buildings suffer in the same way when data isn’t shared across channels. Universal systems that manage lighting, heating, ventilation etc. are the most effective and efficient way for smart buildings to make the best use of their data. Smart lighting control technology creates a unified building, using one sensor variant to control multiple devices, and saving money on equipment in the process. Smart lighting control technology has already evolved to the point where it’s easy to install, and it also delivers the freedom for users to enjoy personalised lighting preferences, with flexibly programmed light levels and dimming schedules, colour temperature, and spectral changes, as well as other lighting characteristics that are important to human physiology and wellbeing. It’s important to remember that we’re living in a new era where the pandemic has impacted how the buildings of today are and will be used. While traditional lighting systems are designed for ‘static use’, lighting control technology serves the new hybrid work model, whereby people are not physically present in the office every day of the week. This is a vital feature for building owners and facilities managers who are looking to make running cost savings. Without a doubt, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) will both be integral in the design of future buildings. This could include lighting control technology that can read behaviour throughout the property, adjusting to provide the best environment for those present. Combining recent technological advancements with developments that make lighting controls more affordable and appealing, smart lighting has become a focal point in the development of smart city design. The control element at the heart of smart lighting is set to revolutionise building design and infrastructure, and it will create a brighter, more sustainable, and more cost-effective pathway to intelligent buildings. Lighting control cables will provide the foundation to enable this to happen. Beyond home and commercial spaces, modern lighting control cables are being

used across a diverse range of applications, including: •  Theatres and other performing arts venues •  Retail and display spaces •  Art installations and galleries •  Security and emergency systems Making the right lighting control cable choice is crucial to optimise signal quality, and to minimise interference and noise. Beyond that, there are significant benefits to using modern lighting control cables, including: •  Improved energy efficiency – dedicated cables that are designed specifically for the task work more efficiently, helping to save energy and money. • Enhanced lighting control and functionality – whether it’s creating ambience by adapting light levels to match personal tastes such as mood lighting, adjusting to suit the requirements of undertaking practical tasks such as cooking, or optimising security with timers and sensors, lighting control cables provide the full scope of options for doing so. •  Compatibility with smart home systems – increasingly, property owners want to mix and match smart devices. Lighting control cables provide the base for them to work together. •  Durability and longevity – installing the correct cable that’s designed specifically for lighting control systems ensures that its lifetime is maximised, preventing overloading, for example. • Safety features and protocols – lighting control cables must be UKCA CPR classified, REACH and RoHS compliant, and conform to British Standards (BS) for flame retardancy, low smoke, and halogen gas. Ignore these at your peril. •  Ease of installation and set-up – lighting control cables are made for purpose, so they’re straightforward to fit and simple to commission. The application of lighting controls in contemporary building design is wide-reaching and varied. Its success hinges on the unsung hero – the lighting control cable that enables the system to communicate and deliver automated processes. Investing in the right lighting control cable is key if design and installation professionals are to realise the full potential of lighting in the future. Webro, webro.com

Casambi. Thanks to permanent mixed light measurement, the lighting controls manufacturer achieved excellent results in rooms with challenging lighting situations, such as in the glass open-plan offices. The PD4 model, with an extra-large detection range of 30m, was used for higher ceilings in the building. This model has a mounting height of up to 16m, while another version of the same model was utilised to take an ‘exact light‘ measurement on the floor of the multi-storey lobby with its state-of-the-art variably adjustable telescopic light sensor. The lighting control solution included a DALI-SYS Router which supports central emergency luminaire management, displays all information about installed luminaires,

DALI-SYS was installed as an intelligent ‘green’ solution for comprehensive lighting control

and automatically performs all necessary function and service life tests. B.E.G can also take over central functions such as calendar functions, energy monitoring and malfunctions, if required. In these cases, fault messages are sent by email for the maintenance of the lighting system, while incidents can be reported in real time. Paul adds, “The lighting control system B.E.G. has put in place at OCA Global’s new headquarters has been comprehensively designed and this fantastic new building is now ready for the future. The DALI-SYS will help make the company’s flagship a perfect place for the OCA Global team to work, collaborate and enjoy on a day-to-day basis.” B.E.G., beg-luxomat.com

“Since the detectors are addressable, the multi-sensors can be set up as master and slave. The multi-sensors have no power supply unit and are supplied with power via the DALI bus. “The ‘guided light’ function has been implemented at OCA Global Group to synchronise the motion detection of several groups, especially in stairwells where no occupancy detectors are installed. This increases the energy efficiency of the building and, at the same time, the employees benefit from the high comfort of the building automation.” B.E.G. installed its PD4 detectors in the new building, which are available as switching detectors for KNX, BMS DALI-2, DALI-SYS, DALI-LINK and

SMART LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROL

LIGHTING UPGRADE FOR HABERDASHERS’ HALL Over the past few years, smart lighting solutions expert, Tridonic, has evolved its offering to make buildings more intelligent than ever before. Demonstrating this, Tridonic recently delivered a wireless lighting project for an events venue in the heart of London.

T

he team at Tridonic UK was commissioned to provide wireless lighting solutions for the refurbishment of Haberdashers’ Hall in London. The hall is owned and utilised by the Haberdashers Company, one of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies; an ancient merchant guild of London. The hall is also used as a venue for conferences, weddings, events and parties.

58 | November 2023

Smart Lighting & Lighting Control (Tridonic).indd 58

The project achieved impressive energy savings of between 20% to 30%, compared to the previous lighting sources

The brief was to provide a wireless lighting control system that would be easy to use and retrofit, whilst also fully upgrading the existing seven-year-old lighting system that had started to experience lighting failures. The lighting system also needed to enhance the architectural features of the hall, such as the natural wood fixtures and finishings that provide a sense of modern opulence. Wireless controls were a necessity to ensure the wiring infrastructure in the hall would remain intact. Tridonic’s solution focused on retrofitting, reusing existing infrastructure and minimising waste. As retrofitting involves adapting existing luminaires for new components, this needs extensive engineering, measuring, and prototype testing to achieve the required results. Fortunately, Tridonic’s LEDs were compatible with chosen light sources, working seamlessly with LEDiL holders and reflectors. Opting for remanufacturing over purchasing new fittings significantly cut the building’s carbon footprint and the amount of waste going to landfill. Tridonic supplied 189 basicDIM Wireless drivers, facilitating control of the luminaires to dim from 1-100%. By utilising bDW drivers, the solution gave the client flexible control of each luminaire, for easy scene setting. Bespoke scenes and groups allow the end user to make adjustments to the lit environment to achieve their desired ambience. Using the wireless Tridonic Xpress Switches allowed the client to select up to four scenes. The scene plates are used to create scenes that provide atmosphere and drama to their hosted events and occasions, while future-proofing the building for future changes or enhanced functionality, for example, via over-the-air firmware updates. All light sources were Tridonic SLE G7 LEDs, with a colour temperature of 3000K and a high colour rendering of RA>90, a highly customisable solution that helped to accentuate the true colours of the natural wood finishes in the hall. The high efficiency of the G7 LED chips meant that the existing heatsinks could be retained, with a 20-30% energy saving achieved by utilising these new fixtures. The LEDs supplied blended energy saving with high colour rendering and high efficiency to achieve the overall effect. The results are undoubtedly impressive. Through the enhancements made, the total energy savings per year will be 43087.51Kwh, with a carbon saving

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

per year of 23267.26kg. Over five years, the cost saving (based on 0.15p per Kwh) will be £32,316. Utilising remanufacturing techniques during the retrofit the project has saved 178.1kg of waste from going to landfill. Retrofitting existing fixtures always poses challenges, but Tridonic’s expertise in LED technology and adaptable products made the process smoother. Prototyping, engineering, and testing were essential to ensure compatibility and optimal results. The ability to retain existing heatsinks due to the high efficiency of Tridonic LED chips reduced waste and furthered the project’s environmental goals, while implementing wireless technology allowed the wiring infrastructure in the hall to remain intact. James Huntington, OEM Controls and Solutions Manager for Tridonic, comments, “This project serves as a shining example of how innovative lighting solutions can transform spaces, reduce environmental impact, and benefit both clients and communities. We were able to fulfil the client’s brief to retrofit innovative new lighting solutions into Haberdasher’s Hall, to enhance its heritage features and create a more sustainable system.”

Project highlights

Employment of basicDIM Wireless controls not only enables easy operation, but also provides a future-proof solution, with the end user able to modify and upgrade the lighting system with minimal effort. Key to the success of the project was the fitting of a lighting system that enhanced the aesthetics of the hall’s natural wood finishes. This aspiration was delivered with the provision of high-quality LED light sources with a colour temperature of 3000K and a colour rendering index (CRI) of Ra>90, making the wood finishes stand out. As well as creating on-point aesthetics, the project achieved impressive energy savings of between 20% to 30%, compared to the previous lighting sources. This reduction in power consumption not only lowers operating costs, but also reduces the environmental footprint. The new lighting system not only improved energy efficiency, but also contributed to the hall’s ambience. The high-quality lighting and flexible wireless control enhance the hall’s visual appeal, making it a more inviting and socially valuable space for various events and activities. OVIA LIGHTS UP FRUIT PACKING AND DISTRIBUTION FACILITY Ovia has supplied the lighting for the expansion of a Kent farming business.

A

C Hulme & Sons is a family run mixed farming business which has been operating in the Canterbury area of East Kent since 1946. The company farms approximately 4,000 acres, supplying some of the UK’s foremost retailers as well as local markets, farm shops and other outlets. The farms grow a diverse range of produce, including fruit (apples, pears, cherries, apricots and plums), hops and potatoes, and also has a large herd of beef cattle and sheep. A major development project to expand the operation saw the company grow to become a major player in the top fruit world. Ovia was specified as the exclusive lighting supplier for the development – a large and complex project that required where possible, a ‘business as usual’ approach. The new building covered part of the footprint of existing packing and distribution facilities and these had to be operational until the very last moment. This is where the expertise of Ovia’s lighting scheme designer came to bear – a highly experienced and qualified member of the Ovia team, responsible for pulling together the lighting design proposal and working in close collaboration with the contractor and the director of the farming business. A variety of Ovia light fittings have been installed across the range of buildings,

PIR Controls – recessed passive infrared sensors – have been fitted for all offices and external lighting requirements. Occupancy sensors were chosen as part of the desire to help save costs and energy usage. For the extensive external areas, a number of Ovia IP65 LED Pathfinder Floodlights – 50W and 150W – have been installed. These robust, metal floodlights are powerful yet energy efficient. Where there was a requirement for emergency lighting on the project, a number of self-test options were selected. These were the 30W emergency LED self-test maintained box exit signs and the IP65 3W emergency LED maintained bulkheads. Commenting on the project, Steve Collins of BMS Electrical Contractors, says, “This was a very large and quite complex project from a lighting installation point of view and having worked with Reg and Ovia on a number of projects, we knew that this was the right team for the job. We have been very impressed with the design service they have provided from the initial submission of the tender and coming up with solutions to a number of issues that emerged. They were able to supply us with a raft of sample fittings for the client to see and approve, and the quality of the products and ease of installation they offered meant we were able to hugely improve the install time for the overall project.”

office space and external locations. Several PIR lighting controls, as well as Ovia’s Flow connectors, were also specified to provide quick and easy solutions for specific areas. For the vast packhouse shed, Ovia’s Inceptor Hion LED Dimmable Highbay fittings with microwave sensor were installed. A white finish in the Hion was selected and fixed to the ceiling using the surface brackets, to provide the finished look required by the client. The non-corrosive U-Lite slimline linear LED fittings in a range of standard, emergency and microwave options were selected for a number of areas including the packaging store, plant room, forklift charging room, traffic light area, pre-grader store, grader room and dispatch area. There were various requirements to be met for the main office areas and these were satisfied using the Inceptor Iona commercial LED downlight in both standard and emergency options for the corridor and stairwell locations. The Inceptor Slate LED recessed panels were chosen for the main office area, with their low UGR19 diffusers making them suitable for working environments. These were fitted in conjunction with the Flow connectors, which provided a quick and easy method of configuring the lighting circuits. Inceptor EVO Bulkheads in standard and emergency options were selected for the external façade by the entrance reception lobby. These featured the IK10 metal housings for added protection.

SMART LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROL

HOW NEW LIGHTING SOLUTIONS HAVE TRANSFORMED THE BBC The benefits of smart lighting and lighting control are well documented, with many organisations and businesses introducing new technologies to deliver many gains. Recently, intelligent lighting provider, Photonic Lighting Solutions, introduced a new system for a high-profile broadcaster – the BBC.

T

A full suite of lighting solutions from Photonic has been installed into the BBC Studios

he redevelopment of Salford Quays attracted many high-profile organisations to take up residence, including the world-famous British broadcaster, the BBC. Located in the development’s MediaCityUK building, a 200-acre mixed use property, are many of the broadcaster’s studios and production functions. The media outlet recently wanted to improve the lighting in the studio environments as the current lighting and control systems were failing. Given the crucial role light plays in television production, it was vital that a robust and reliable system was introduced. Facilities manager for the BBC offices, Mitie, chose to work with electrical wholesaler, Rexel, in partnership with Photonic, who developed project-specific right across the site. While improving the lighting was a key element of the project, it was also imperative that the upgrade resulted in a reduction in energy consumption. Not only does this align with the BBC’s drive to be more sustainable, it also supports the broadcaster’s commitment to managing its budgets in the most effective way possible.

62 | November 2023

Smart Lighting & Lighting Control (Photonic Lighting).indd 62

While the BBC’s system was outdated and needed replacing, elsewhere in Media City a Casambi system had been introduced to modernise the lighting and add controllability. By conducting a survey of the studios, Photonic found that by using the current electrical installation, Casambi solutions could easily be integrated into new areas, introducing the benefits of Casambi across much more of the development and delivering huge advantages for the BBC. The recommended Casambi solution from Photonic enables the control of lighting levels, at the same time as saving energy where required. The system supports the use of timers, pre-set lighting levels and scenes, as well as various control options that allow the user to create the correct lighting levels or preference in that environment. A full suite of lighting solutions from Photonic has been installed into the BBC Studios, delivering excellent lighting levels, full control and energy savings. Specifically, this is a Casambi 10W track spot unit which has been installed into the existing 3-circuit track system. This features a colour temperature of 2700K, and a wide-angle diffused lens. These are ideal for illuminating the studio desks and various other pieces of equipment, as they provide low-level lighting for task work while minimising light pollution into the other areas of the studio. There is full control by the end-user; switching on-off and dimming up and down on an individual luminaire or group luminaire basis, and the system can also be locked down by the end-user to ensure they have safeguards in place. Photonic provided full payback calculations for the project, which show more than 50% of the original output is saved. This was run in conjunction with surveys to ensure the lighting was getting the balance between efficiency and comfort for users. Various LUX plots at differing workstations were conducted – a light meter was used to record the light levels when someone was working at the station, making sure the lighting was offering suitable working conditions that supported the individual’s preference, health and wellbeing. Photonic’s work at the BBC and Media City more widely is set to continue through a number of future upgrades. The manufacturer has been appointed to deliver a fully controllable system in the stairwells, toilets and amenity areas, as well as the

electricalcontractingnews.com

back of house and two additional radio stations at the BBC. By using the same technologies for these areas, this will allow for consistency and a holistic approach to improving the lighting. This consistency is preferable rather than isolated projects, where aesthetics may become the main focus rather than a system that works in harmony with other areas of the BBC and the building. The BBC is just one of many Casambi projects that Photonic Lighting Solutions currently has in the pipeline, delivering fully controllable systems with simple user interaction and offering significant reduction in energy usage.

Improving the lighting was a key element of the project and the upgrade led to a reduction in energy consumption

SMART LIGHTING & LIGHTING CONTROL

PAVING THE WAY FOR INTELLIGENT AND ADAPTIVE LIGHTING SOLUTIONS In an ever-evolving world where infrastructure development, energy efficiency, and safety take centre stage, the A2 Poznan project in Poland shines as a beacon of innovation in the realm of smart lighting and controls.

T

his remarkable endeavour on the A2 motorway’s Świecko-Modła section demonstrates a visionary approach to enhancing energy efficiency through smart lighting, all while weaving sustainability into its fabric. A2 Poznan embarked on the journey of optimising 59 engineering projects, from intersections to toll collection points, with a focus on reducing power consumption while adhering to lighting standards. Over 130 distinct luminaire types, equipped with power reduction systems, dynamically adjust lighting parameters based on traffic conditions and potential road hazards. This meticulous engineering excellence was at the heart of the project’s success. It redefined what was possible in highway lighting by optimising existing infrastructure and introducing innovative lighting solutions. The project’s vision was to create a smarter, more sustainable and energy-efficient lighting system for the A2 motorway’s Świecko-Modła section, a key transportation route in Poland. The mission was clear: to reduce power consumption, improve lighting quality, and enhance road safety. Rather than undertaking extensive infrastructure modernisation, the A2 Poznan project astutely adapted existing infrastructure elements such as pole placement and road geometry. This approach eliminated the need for disruptive overhauls and conserved valuable resources. The project’s primary focus was on the replacement of lighting fixtures and the transformation of power supply points. By retaining much of the existing infrastructure and intelligently upgrading specific elements, the project minimised disruption to road users. This dual emphasis on energy efficiency and

64 | November 2023

Smart Lighting & Lighting Control (LUG Lighting).indd 64

infrastructure preservation exemplifies a forward-thinking, sustainable approach to large-scale lighting projects. Diverse types of luminaires were strategically employed to ensure that the project met the lighting parameters specified. This unification of lighting parameters across all facilities was essential in maintaining a consistent and dependable level of illumination, contributing significantly to improved road safety. Unifying the lighting standards not only helped to maintain safety but also contributed to the aesthetic consistency along the motorway. The result was a visually appealing, well-lit roadway that provided a sense of security and coherence to travellers. The project’s efficiency was further enhanced by utilising existing power lines, enabling a communication system with the luminaires through the existing power supply infrastructure. A ground-breaking innovation utilised in the A2 Poznan project was the integration of smart traffic intensity monitoring devices. These devices enabled the creation of an adaptive lighting system that adjusted illumination levels in real time based on current highway conditions. This dynamic approach not only optimised energy consumption but also bolstered safety by providing adequate lighting in varying circumstances and conditions. The introduction of smart lighting and control systems represents a significant step forward in the realm of roadway lighting. As smart cities and intelligent transportation systems become increasingly prevalent, the project showcases the practical benefits of implementing such forward-thinking technologies in our road networks, promising safer, more sustainable, and energy-efficient transportation corridors for the future. This integration of smart lighting and control not only enhances energy efficiency but also paves the way for

electricalcontractingnews.com

intelligent, adaptive lighting solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into the broader smart infrastructure ecosystem. The A2 Poznan project serves as a testament to the transformative power of smart lighting in creating safer and more sustainable road networks. Speaking about the project, Darrell West, Country Manager UK of LUG Lighting says, “As we illuminate the roadways of today with smart lighting, we are in fact paving the way for a brighter, safer and more sustainable future. Smart lighting isn’t just about efficiency, it’s a promise of intelligent, adaptive lighting solutions that will seamlessly integrate into the cities and roadways of tomorrow.” Another striking achievement of the A2 Poznan project was the remarkable reduction in electricity consumption. By embracing new LED technologies, the project achieved energy savings of approximately 70% when compared to the original state, where conventional light sources were employed. This achievement highlights the potential of energy-efficient lighting solutions in reducing environmental impact and lowering operational costs. LUG Lightings’ role in the project epitomises the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainable lighting solutions for the future. As a leader in the lighting industry, the company is driven by a vision of creating smarter and safer urban environments. BY THINKING SMART, ELECTRICIANS CAN DRIVE THE UK INTO POLE POSITION WHEN IT COMES TO EV CHARGING It’s clear that the transition to EV is one of the greatest infrastructure challenges – alongside internet connectivity – that the country has faced in recent years. As with any revolution, there are those talking about why we need change, those planning the change and the unsung heroes actually doing the hard yards. EV is no different, writes Will David, CEO at Clenergy EV.

T

he hardware manufacturers may be making the kit and operators (CPOs) preparing the infrastructure rollout, but it is the electricians that are ensuring the chargepoints are physically in the ground, and working. The government has mandated a minimum of 300,000 public EV charging points must be installed by 2030 to meet predicted ‘charge’ demand. It is expected that by this time there will be approximately 11 million EVs on UK roads. Which may be why some lean closer to The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) belief the UK could require closer to 2.3 million chargers.

We must support our electricians

The latest data from Zapmap states that over 50,000 public EV charging stations are now available to EV drivers across the UK. Even if the minimum figures were used, it’s clear the pace needs to accelerate if an extra 250,000 chargepoints are up and running in six years’ time. To put it into context, that’s on average 42,000 chargepoints installed per year, which offers a huge opportunity for the UK’s electricians who have the experience to help install robust EV charging networks. More is needed to support the EV industry’s key workers if the UK is going to achieve this goal. Research from the City & Guilds suggests that in 2022 only 22% of the UK’s current electricians had undertaken any form of EV chargepoint specific training. Despite this, almost three-quarters (73%) of respondents would seek work to install or repair EV chargepoints over the next 12 months. Forward wind to 2023, the intention hasn’t necessarily come to fruition. According to ElecricalDirect, less than a third (32%) of UK electricians are currently installing EV chargepoints, despite the ability to make substantial increases to their monthly pay packet. This could change – the London South Bank Technical College is the first educational institution to announce a pilot of a six week course on installing electrical

chargepoints. No doubt other colleges will follow suit. Given the potential revenue opportunities of working in this sector, alongside the ability to future proof their career, it seems like a missed opportunity for many electricians, as well as a potential roadblock in the making for the EV chargepoint rollout targets.

UK’s electricians have the experience to help install robust EV charging networks

What’s holding back the move to EV?

Every electrician involved with the installation of EV charging knows that hardware (the chargepoint/s) is only one, albeit critical, part of the public EV charging infrastructure ecosystem. The glue that binds it all together is the software. And it is incumbent on suppliers to educate electricians, so they can provide the best service to CPOs and home users on why it is important. Quite simply, EV chargepoints require software to get the best out of them – similar to a mobile phone which uses software to keep it secure and updated with added functionality. The same is true with EV chargers – the hardware can power up an EV and provide access to basic charge data. However, it is the software that provides vital features such as contactless payment, driver roaming, and easy ways to manage and maintain a network.

electricalcontractingnews.com

What is often overlooked, or unknown, is that EV software from the likes of Clenergy EV includes a host of smart features, so electricians can offer their customers and their customers’ end-users the very best chargepoint experience. But perhaps, the most important advantage for electricians is as well as earning money on the installation itself, electricians have the option to increase their profits substantially with pre-agreed fees for installing software, which takes a few minutes. And then take a percentage of the transaction fee every time the charger is used, which results in significant passive income over the lifetime of the charger.

A simple, smart switch

It’s clear that there is a lucrative revenue opportunity for the experienced and knowledgeable electrician to lead the charge to install the much needed 250,000 EV chargepoints. However, not all EV charging software is created equal – a simple switch of provider and becoming a ‘smart’ EV installer could future proof an electrician’s EV revenue streams for years to come. After all, the UK is only at the beginning of its EV journey and there are many more years of EV chargepoint installation, maintenance, and down the line, replacement to come. HOW TECHNOLOGY IS TRANSFORMING BUILDING COMPLIANCE Building compliance requirements are changing rapidly, and technology will ensure mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractors keep up with the pace, Dave Carr from Propeller Powered explains.

E

developed, eliminating the need for manual, paper-based processes. The technology ensures the building owner or manager complies with the latest regulations, while driving time and cost efficiencies for small-to-medium sized contractors. All compliance areas can be managed through a single platform containing all the relevant legislative certificates for gas and electrical equipment, including renewables. These certificates are created digitally on a mobile app and can be validated on site, saving time, improving service levels, and minimising the risk of non-compliance for the building owner or manager. All information recorded during the checks is fed into a dashboard, providing a real-time view of compliance for the building’s landlord.

ver-changing legislation, combined with the need to improve energy efficiency, is making building compliance more complex and time consuming. The Building Safety Act is introducing a raft of new rules, including more stringent requirements for fire safety and a need for all those in the supply chain to prove competence. For the public sector, the new Social Housing Regulation Act will shine an even brighter spotlight on housing safety compliance, requiring more stringent inspections and transparency. A growing number of social landlords are also choosing to conduct electrical safety checks at least once every five years ahead of possible new legislation, which will align with legal requirements already in force for privately owned properties. At the same time, the government’s net zero targets are seeing some building owners prioritise measures which will help to minimise environmental impact and costs. This means that equipment such as solar panels and air and ground source heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular in both commercial and residential buildings.

Streamlined processes

A single source

For M&E contractors responsible for building compliance services, these changes are creating a raft of extra tasks, which means more reporting, administration, and potential costs. To address these challenges, new cloud-based software has been designed and

The need to improve energy efficiency is making building compliance more complex

To improve efficiency, engineers can be managed remotely and in real time using the same software, with job data provided instantly. All documentation can be completed electronically and is then stored for each property, along with photographs, materials and costing information. Intelligent scheduling is also available, enabling contractors to automatically allocate work by priority, availability, location and skills. Identifying appliances such as renewable energy equipment is another task which can swallow extra time and costs. This process can be managed with the same software, using QR codes which are applied to each piece of equipment, giving it a unique asset tag. As well as allowing contractors to

build an accurate database, the QR codes can be scanned to reveal a detailed job history, enabling service plans to be set up, including schedules that meet the SFG20 standard maintenance specification. To overcome the long-standing issue of access, automation is a critical element in the technology. Tenants can be automatically reminded of appointments using a variety of tools including text messages, email and WhatsApp, depending on individual preferences. For those unable to be at home for the appointment, there is also the potential for them to respond so a new time can be arranged.

Adapting to change

As the legal landscape continues to evolve, some M&E contractors are being called upon to deliver additional services. For example, Propeller Powered has been contacted by several M&E contractors which have been tasked to carry out fire door checks following the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, which were enforced in January 2023. This legislation sets new legal duties for those who own or manage multi-occupied residential buildings over 11m high. These include an obligation for the ‘responsible person’ to conduct quarterly checks on communal doors that lead onto common areas, such as hallways, and annual inspections on flat entrance doors. Evidence of the steps taken to comply with the regulations must also be recorded. For engineers who have been asked to assist with this challenging task, there is specialist cloud-based software available for this too. This allows fire door maintenance and inspection programmes to be managed digitally. Fire doors, including time-stamped images, can be digitally recorded into a database, along with a history of inspections for auditing purposes. All other areas of compliance, including gas, electrical and legionella, can be incorporated into the same system, bringing key data into one place, eliminating the need for multiple systems.

The future is now

With the task of maintaining building compliance becoming more challenging for landlords across both the public and private sectors, M&E contractors have a key role to play. By adopting new technology, all compliance areas can be brought under one system, generating time and cost efficiencies and ensuring building owners comply with the latest legislation. BLACKHALL HEATING & ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMS WITH BIGCHANGE MOBILE CLOUD TECH Blackhall, Edinburgh’s oldest family-run provider of plumbing, heating and electrical services, has invested in a BigChange job management system to secure the next 100 years of business. Blackhall has transformed the management of its mobile operation with integrated CRM, tracking and reporting, resulting in better customer communications, fewer queries and more accurate on-site charging.

B

igChange is also supporting Blackhall’s green ambitions with intelligent scheduling and routing of its fully electric fleet and its commitment to 100% paperless working. P Blackhall was established by Peter Blackhall in 1913 and has been run by his descendants ever since. Now in the hands of the fifth generation, the company has diversified its service offering and was one of the first to specialise in renewable energy solutions in Edinburgh. The company has more recently started to offer EV charger installation, service and maintenance. Blackhall selected BigChange to replace a previous scheduling system, which it felt had not kept pace with technology or its changing requirements. “Blackhall has been through various transitions in its 110-year history, evolving from a one-man-band to hugely respected provider of high-end domestic and commercial services, and technology

has always played a part,” comments, Stuart Blackhall, Business Director and Peter Blackhall’s great, great grandson. “My grandfather, who was awarded an MBE for his services to the engineering sector, made the first foray into computers in the early 1980’s with a reported investment of £20,000 and a desire to extend the use of technology to support all aspects of the business. “Now, 40 years later, that is exactly what we have with BigChange,” Stuart continues. “A system that supports every aspect of the business. From initial customer enquiry, right the way through to invoicing and payment, BigChange allows us to capture and record information and share it within the business to inform decision-making, and with our customers to improve service levels.” The cloud-based BigChange job management system, which incorporates customer relationship management (CRM), job scheduling, live tracking, resource management, job finance and business intelligence, in one simple to use and easy to integrate platform,

was selected by Blackhall and is being used across the business. Customer enquiries, quotes and correspondence, created and stored within the CRM, together with automatically generated ETA notifications, are boosting customer service levels without additional back-office resource. Whilst, customisable job sheets, complete with photographs and time and date stamps, are helping to manage customer queries and improve on-site charging. Blackhall is also using BigChange to minimise its environmental impact and manage rising costs. Having already invested in a fleet of electric vans, Blackhall uses BigChange to intelligently schedule jobs and route its vehicles between jobs, reducing unnecessary mileage and avoiding areas of congestion. Real-time tracking and driver behaviour alerts are also helping to improve the performance and maintenance of vehicles, reducing servicing costs and minimising additional charges, such as parking fines. At the heart of the Fort smart security range is the smart intruder alarm, which will support up to 32 RF devices and provide remote monitoring and alert notifications directly to the Click Smart+ app. The range also includes a Smart Alarm Keypad that is usually positioned in entrances and hallways. The keypad requires the Smart Alarm Hub and provides users with arm, disarm, home mode and panic functions. The Wi-Fi Smart Alarm Hub includes an inbuilt siren, backup battery with up to eight hours standby time and GSM backup facility (SIM not included) for additional system security. The Hub is compatible with a range of battery powered RF devices that can be controlled to provide whole home security in and around a property. ESP, espuk.com
