INTRODUCTION

A SMARTER FUTURE FOR ALL Welcome to our first supplement of 2019, which offers a dedicated focus on products and innovations driving forward the smart building evolution. Recent research from GfK Global showed that the UK is the fastest-growing smart home market in Europe, and today, it’s estimated to be worth in the region of £900 million. In addition, the UK is also now the second biggest smart home market in Europe, so the importance of smart technology – whether it be for commercial or residential properties – certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. The study also found that consumers were most concerned about price points and personal privacy concerns, but as companies continue to innovate, these factors are becoming less and less of an issue. In this supplement, you’ll find comment and expert analysis from a wide range of industry experts, and details on some of the latest and greatest products in the smart home technology market. Our next supplement will appear in our June issue, and the focus this time will be on wiring accessories, which – in the wake of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations – is another of the industry’s hot topics at present. If you would like to be involved, please contact either myself or Kelly Byne via kelly@allthingsmedialtd.com We hope you enjoy this special supplement, and I hope you enjoy each of the intriguing articles contained within.

LED ECO LIGHTS

LED TO SAFETY LED Eco Lights, one of the UK’s leading experts in LED lighting and wireless lighting control solutions, explains why smart LED lighting is perfect for emergencies.

mergency lighting is integral to evacuation plans for any building, and it is also a legal requirement for most premises. With any loss of power, an effective emergency lighting system ensures the safety and peace of mind of everyone on the premises. Evacuating people out of a building in darkness can be difficult and dangerous, but emergency lighting systems ensure that the path to safety will be well-lit and easy to navigate. While safety of building users, owners and occupiers is the main priority, it will also help emergency services perform their task more effectively. The basic approach to emergency lighting changed fundamentally in 2016, with the extensive revision of BS 5266 Emergency Lighting – Part 1: Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises. This is founded on strategies of switching to batteries or backup power when the main power source is lost. Further guidelines recommend that emergency batteries should test and operate minimum lux levels of 0.5+ lx in open areas and 1lx or more for escape routes, with a three-hour duration in emergency mode. Such guidelines present a top-down approach, but if existing lighting systems already fulfil the base requirements and system standards, there is still ample opportunity to gain cost and operational benefits by upgrading emergency lighting luminaires, lamps and illuminated signage with LED technology.

Wireless lighting control is particularly ideal for warehouse and production environments

Enhancing safety and compliance Smart LED lighting systems have the potential to transform the implementation of emergency lighting in buildings. Manual testing is tedious, time-consuming, costly and may be prone to human error. An emergency lighting monitoring system enables building managers to automate routine and periodic testing of emergency lighting and also the regulatory reporting and recording of test results. Areas where automation of the emergency lighting process should be strongly considered are in multiple occupancy dwellings, such as social housing, care homes, healthcare, education, hotels and leisure. In the wake of recent events like the Grenfell Tower disaster, the spotlight has fallen on preventing emergency lighting failures that contributed to these tragedies. Smart LED lights, connected to the building services, create new opportunities. For example, lighting can be connected to a building’s alarm system. In the event of a fire alarm, all lighting can be triggered to 100% on to assist the evacuation. Battery back-up mode can be activated only when the mains power to an area actually fails. Implementation of these solutions is simplified by the recent introduction of simple, scalable, lighting control systems such as Light Boss. Light Boss creates a wireless lighting network, controlled by an Android app or web interface, with simple software

to set and adjust the building’s lighting. The control system connects wirelessly to individual light fixtures creating a network of tens or even thousands of LED lights. Right out of the box, Light Boss provides self-test emergency light monitoring, allowing operators to check for faults remotely without testing individual light fittings; also eradicating the need for manual reporting. In addition, it provides live reporting on energy consumption of all connected lighting fixtures, allowing energy management of a single site or a group of sites, making it the ideal tool for complete energy performance of multi-site installations. Unlike alternative SMART networks, Light Boss lighting control is universal, and retrofittable. This enables lighting to be readily upgraded to a fully controllable LED scheme based on new wirelessenabled luminaires. Even non-LED luminaires can be converted to join the smart network. The Emergency Light Monitoring Dashboard continuously displays the status of emergency lighting units’ health and pre-alerts operators to check emergency fittings for faults. It is everyone’s hope that emergency lighting systems are never used, but the use of LED fixtures keeps the cost of this ‘insurance’ to the minimum, and compliance to the full. SCOLMORE

SCOLMORE’S SMART SOLUTIONS – IN A BOX With demand for the smart home continuing to rise, it’s up to electrical contractors and installers to provide solutions that are simple to operate and easy to install. Scolmore explains why its unique range of products are the perfect fit.

T

he evolution of the smart home gathers pace, with the market witnessing a continued increase in the appetite for smart technology from end users. Whilst this advance will bring significant business opportunities for switched on electrical contractors and installers, there is reluctance on the part of some installers to fully embrace this new technology as it is often deemed too complicated to install, and they are therefore unwilling to upsell to customers. With a reputation for developing products and solutions that make installation projects quicker and simpler to achieve, Scolmore’s range of Click Smart intelligent wiring accessories aims to strip home automation right back to basics to offer a simple system that has, at its core, accessibility and simplicity for the installer and end user. To make things even easier, Scolmore has identified a number of scenarios that installers are regularly faced with on the job, and have come up with a ‘smart’ boxed solution. This means that every component part necessary to provide the smart solution is contained in one handy box. For example, the Click Smart Dimmer from Scolmore provides everything needed in one box to overcome the problems associated with flickering lights.

6 | March 2019

Scolmore.indd 6

The Click Smart Dimmer provides everything needed in one box to overcome the problems associated with flickering lights

Scolmore’s range of Click Smart intelligent wiring accessories seeks to make life simpler both for the installer and the end user

The solution to flickering rotary dimmers is to use a retractive switch instead of a rotary dimmer (wired). Everything required is contained in the box, including a dimming module, face plate and one retractive switch module. The components are compatible with traditional wiring and can be retrofitted to an existing circuit. Simply replace the rotary dimmer with the retractive switch supplied and add the dimming module to the light fitting. It dims up to 160W of dimmable LED and there is no need to ever worry about changing the dimmer if the LED light source is changed. It also allows for two-way dimming, which is not achievable with traditional rotary dimmers. Another example is the Click Smart Outdoor Socket and Switch. There are many reasons for wanting to add a wireless switch to an outdoor socket, for example switching on a light, controlling an outdoor appliance or sprinklers, or the ability to switch off power for security. Scolmore has made this task simpler than ever with this smart solution. It is part of Scolmore’s Aquip66 range of durable, easy-to-install weatherproof boxes, which come as completely sealed units and are designed to offer a high level of protection against ingress of water jets and dust. It is available as a boxed smart solution, with each box containing one two-gang anthracite grey IP66 weatherproof socket, one white smart switch and one white receiver. By simply adding the receiver to the socket and the switch to a convenient

location, it allows smart control of anything plugged into the socket, from anywhere in the home. The IP66-rated weatherproof socket and switch enclosures offer users a single fix installation, with the whole of the back box fixing to the wall to accommodate the socket or modules. Multiple knock-outs on each side (20mm) allow for entry from all angles, and a flexible rubber base with rear entry gasket provides extra weatherproof protection, as well as allowing for mounting on most types of uneven surfaces. The sockets and switches can be purchased as empty unfurnished boxes or furnished with the appropriate socket or switch modules. A spring-loaded lid makes for easy access and the units are also lockable, which safeguards them against tampering and also allows for safe isolation. The range is supplied in anthracite grey, with its robust construction providing high-impact resistance, and it is UV protected against fading. The versatility of the range means the units can be used for a wide range of wiring accessories, including fused connection units and isolation switches. These boxed solutions are part of Scolmore’s growing Click Smart range of intelligent wiring accessories, designed to make it quick and relatively cheap to adapt and update a property to provide extra security, energy saving, comfort and control. DOEPKE

SMART HOMES – DON’T SKIMP ON PROTECTION Gerold Roolfs, Director of Design and Development at Doepke, explains why it’s essential for a networked home to strive for the strongest possible levels of safety.

M

aking a home ‘smart’ places high demands on the electrical installations and on protection against dangerous residual currents. A networked home relies on electricity being permanently available. Power outages, such as those due to storms or by random tripping of RCDs, are undesirable and can cause extensive work if the smart home has to be reprogrammed. To improve energy efficiency, appliances are generally equipped with semiconductorbased technology, including switched-mode power supplies used in PCs, AV and LED drivers, and frequency converters for speed control associated with washing machines, heating pumps and ventilation. Some switched-mode power supplies do not limit the inrush current (<80 x In). This in itself is

8 | March 2019

Doepke.indd 8

not dangerous, but a number of these units switched on at once could result in nuisance tripping of Type A RCDs. In addition, switched-mode power supplies and frequency converters can produce residual currents with mixed frequencies (composite residual currents). The standards and wiring regulations 531.3.3 define the use of Type F RCDs. For composite residual currents, refer to regulation 133.1.1 and 133.1.3. Type F residual current circuitbreakers from Doepke are highly resistant to surge currents and even lightning. They react reliably to pulsating and AC residual currents and composite residual currents with mixed frequencies, ensuring electricity can still be used safely in smart homes. The Doepke Type F uses a sophisticated, patented electronics system powered exclusively by the low energy of the summation current

transformer, generated by the residual current. Therefore, the residual current circuit-breaker remains independent of auxiliary voltage and does not consume any extra energy from the network. Doepke, doepke.co.uk

THE LED SPECIALIST

SMART BULBS LIGHT THE WAY FORWARD The LED Specialist, an independent lighting wholesaler and an approved Philips LED seller in the UK, provides a full overview of smart light bulbs and explains why they play such an important role in today’s smart homes.

I

nvesting in some smart light bulbs is an ideal first step to creating a smart home. Smart lighting, especially when coupled with a smart speaker, can be a seamless way to control your home – and it makes for some very cool experiences. And it’s not just all Philips Hue nowadays – there are plenty of alternatives. There are a plethora of technologies, sizes, shapes, colours and styles on offer, from a huge array of different brands.

Why buy smart lighting? Well, there’s plenty of reasons. Smart bulbs have tons of features, so you can dim them and turn them on and off with your voice (when paired with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri). You can group bulbs together to have your whole downstairs, living room or home under a single control. And you can set up routines, so ‘movie time’ turns off the main lights and turns everything else to a warm colour, for instance. Or, you can have your porch lights turn on when you open the front door (with a sensor). It’s not just impressing your mates with garish colours – this is useful stuff.

How do smart bulbs work? If you’re new to smart bulbs, let’s clear up the basics. These devices are actual bulbs that are internet connected. How they connect is another matter. Some work via Wi-Fi, which means you need no extra hardware. Others need a hub connected to your router.

Why do so many smart bulbs need a hub? It’s not ideal, but smart bulbs work better when connected to a hub. The presence of a hub means they work using Zigbee or Z-Wave, which is a much more stable connection, with a longer range that’s less prone to dropouts than Wi-Fi.

How do you fit a smart bulb? Every system is different, but you set up the hub and app, and then just screw in your bulb and turn it on at the wall. It should be found within the app. For hubless Wi-Fi bulbs, screw them in and turn them on – your phone will connect to them via Bluetooth and pass on your Wi-Fi details.

Are all smart bulbs expensive? The price is dropping all the time, but yes, they’re more expensive than standard bulbs. We’d advise getting a good deal on a starter kit and then waiting to grab single bulbs in the sales – the big retailers are always discounting. But there’s an alternative. You can get many of the benefits of smart bulbs by changing out for a smart light switch instead. You lose some of the dimming and colour features, but it saves buying 25 smart GU10 bulbs for your kitchen.

Is there alternative technology to Wi-Fi? Delta Dore uses a proprietary radio frequency protocol called X3D, and this is the foundation of their smart home products that are installed into approximately three million homes. This technology falls into a similar category as names such as Zigbee and Z-Wave, as far as it uses 868mhz; but what these protocols don’t have is the ability to achieve communication ranges up to 300m. By building the core of your smart home on this type of platform, it ensures that you have a genuine stability of signal that will not let you down. When we compare this with Wi-Fi, the X3D smart home products don’t rely on the internet to communicate, meaning that when you are on Netflix and the kids are playing their favourite game, you will still have seamless use of your smart home system while your bandwidth takes a hit. This also has a positive effect if you

“X3D smart home products don’t rely on the internet to communicate, meaning that you will still have seamless use of your smart home system while your bandwidth takes a hit.”

have an unreliable internet connection, as your products will still be running to their schedules regardless of connection. With X3D transmissions being secured and using only occasional minimal emissions (1-5mW vs a mobile phone that emits 600 – 2,000 mW), it ensures that you will not have any cross communication, whilst at the same time providing the peace of mind that your smart home is secure. With our additional protection of the Delta Dore home cloud, you can be sure that your data is kept in the house; unless you give permission for it to be used. Beyond this, we appreciate that there are many other great brands, and by using Delta Dore, you have the option to scale your smart home in your own time – either by using some of our 120 ecosystem partners, directly through X3D, or indeed via our IOT platform that integrates systems such as Philips Hue and Google/ Alexa voice control. By providing a stable and flexible platform – Delta Dore ensures you have a solid and secure foundation to build your smart home today and in the future. Plus, the products are brilliant for electricians to easily install. The LED Specialist, theledspecialist.co.uk

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

THE PATH TO A SMARTER FUTURE

The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), one of EI Live’s partners, will deliver a talk assessing how new products and services can be delivered for all types of smart buildings. Below, the ECA explains in its own words how the industry is evolving.

C

ities in the UK are quickly becoming ‘smart’, and technology is now an integral part of the fabric of society. It is anticipated that globally, by 2100, 80% of people will live in cities. As progress marches on, more and more data is collected daily from the individuals, devices, buildings and assets which make up our cities. Billions of points of information are being used to better manage the power, transportation, and data networks we use. Electrotechnical designers, installers and maintenance technicians will be key to what happens next. But what are the components and themes of the new electrotechnical networks that will support society and business in the future? As an association partner, ECA will be on hand to help answer this question and more at this year’s EI Live! event. Darren Smith, ECA’s Digital Buildings Solutions Advisor, is set to deliver a talk covering the ways manufacturers, software companies and entrepreneurs are developing and delivering new products and services for smart homes, buildings and cities, and the opportunities that electrical professionals must seize today to help ensure they stay relevant to their clients tomorrow. Darren’s talk will be most relevant to electrotechnical engineering and services professionals; in particular, for those involved in smart home installations and building automation control systems (BACS).

One of the most anticipated presentations at EI Live! will be delivered by Darren Smith, ECA’s Digital Buildings Solutions Advisor

From smart homes… Electrotechnical professionals are uniquely placed to help homeowners realise the potential of smart technology in the home: fully automated controls for fire and security, energy management, heating, lighting and entertainment and more will soon be essential tools for daily living. The implications of installing and upgrading these – both in new builds and in retrofitted properties – can be an opportunity but also a minefield.

…to smart buildings The UK construction and infrastructure sectors are gradually adopting a digital approach to better design, build, operate, and integrate the built environment. The change is happening gradually, but the pace is expected to pick up dramatically. The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon fall into critical areas including logistics, manufacturing, digital assets, and field service applications. It is also set to cover the complete supply chain to include the lifecycle of products, and digitalisation of services when the data is harnessed. Our relationship with the built and urban environment is fundamentally changing, and the electrical industry is crucial in respect to developing an infrastructure which consists of truly smart homes and buildings. CEDIA

THE FUTURE IS SMART The development of connected technology is exciting, and incredibly fast-paced. Matt Nimmons, Managing Director of CEDIA EMEA, explains how electricians can provide their clients with the right cabling requirements for the modern home, and why education and certification is incredibly important in the rapidly-expanding smart home technology market.

A

lmost every household today includes some sort of smart connectivity device, as more and more homeowners become aware of the benefits smart technology can offer. This presents a lucrative opportunity for electricians to expand their professional reach and create new business. A professionally installed integrated system offers so much more, and so many more lifestyle advantages to the consumer. It also brings opportunity to the professional, well-trained and informed installer; a growing number of whom are expanding into this world from electrical contracting. The challenge with this, however, is staying ahead of the game and providing a service that homeowners can benefit from. For many electrical contractors, moving from installation of the wiring infrastructure to fully fledged home technology integrator can seem like a daunting prospect, but CEDIA is here to help.

The power of education With new technology, unfamiliar terminology and specialist integration skills, it can be an overwhelming task entering the industry without the necessary training. CEDIA is the pre-eminent body to help electricians make the transition into the home technology industry, with a number of training courses, events, and resources to help you gain awareness of the market and progress your career. To make sure electricians are equipped with the correct skills and knowledge, CEDIA is on hand with the best available training when it comes to wiring for smart homes. BEG

NEW MULTI-SENSORS FOR DALI-2 Manufacturer BEG Lighting Controls has released its first range of DALI-2 multi-sensors for building management systems.

BEG’s impressive new range of DALI-2 multi-sensors.

B.E.G.

ALI-2 is the new open protocol for bi-directional communication between lighting and control products. Being an open protocol, the standard – based on the IEC 62386 international standard – is managed by the Digital Illumination Interface Alliance (DIIA), of which BEG is a member. Compliance means that all member products will be tested to prove interoperability and will have additional functionality compared to the original DALI standard. The new BEG DALI-2 range is comprised of eight indoor and one outdoor multi-sensor detectors based on its most popular product styles, including the PD11, which is one of the thinnest detectors on the market today with a surface thickness of less than 1mm.

BEG Director for UK & Ireland, Paul Jones, said, “The new BEG DALI-2 sensors and systems still use the same cabling and infrastructure layout as the traditional DALI. The big advantages are increased functionality and interoperability, which means specifiers can quote DALI-2 safe in the knowledge they will be getting a competitively priced product, which is tested and approved to a known standard. “End-users will benefit from excellent detection quality for movement and occupancy due to digital passive infrared sensor technology, and extremely reliable light measurement from the external light sensor. The future is DALI-2 lighting control, from shops and offices to airports.” The new DALI-2 standard means it is possible for sensor information, including movement, occupancy and light values, to be sent via the multi-master mode

without cyclical queries. This information is standardised so that all BEG DALI-2 sensors can be used with all DALI-2 compatible controllers. The main differences between standard DALI and DALI 2 is the inclusion of application controllers and inputs, which were not previously included in DALI. The certification of DALI-2 has also been introduced to improve interoperability with devices now capable of being used together on the same DALI bus, regardless of the manufacturer. BEG’s sensors cover a wide range of applications including for offices, schools, hospitals, conference rooms, warehouses, and loading ramps. There are also sensors for monitoring corridors, public lavatories and archive rooms. BEG, beg-luxomat.com

urora’s AOne smart lighting platform, powered by Gooee, has been designed to make smart lighting simple and easy to install. The UK’s leading lighting manufacturer gives you its most versatile and innovative solution yet. It provides home and business owners the opportunity to create smart lighting spaces by using the AOne app. Only a year after the release of this smart lighting platform, the Aurora Lighting Group has dramatically increased its smart lighting portfolio. There are 30 brand new ‘Smart Inside’ products, with a built-in smart capability. Alongside this, there are over 900 standard luminaires in Enlite’s new Trade Edition Two catalogue that can be made smart with AOne circuit control devices. Aurora’s AOne is designed with the contractor in mind, covering light, power, sensing and control. The AOne system consists of an app, hub and a comprehensive range of easy-to-install Smart Inside devices that enables the user to control their lighting the way they want to from anywhere, via the AOne app.

Ease of install The new ‘Smart Inside’ products have an integrated Zigbee protocol to form a mesh network with the Gooee Smart Space Hub. It allows for complete control over one or multiple lights in a space. On top of that, each luminaire provides significant energy savings, is low maintenance, affordable, easy to install and is interoperable with Samsung SmartThings and Amazon Alexa.

Setup is very straightforward and can be completed in four simple steps: 1. Download the AOne app 2. Connect the hub 3. Install device(s) 4. Take control Smart integration for both new build and retrofit installations is made far easier with the AOne system, as the devices have been designed to replace standard luminaires and wall controllers. Once configured, your clients will also have peace of mind with the fully certified 128-bit security level.

“Aurora’s AOne is designed with the contractor in mind, covering light, power, sensing and control.”

The AOne app has been designed with great care to provide a simple interface for the best user experience. You can download the app for both Android and iOS devices directly from Google Play or the Apple store for free. Once you’ve activated your account, you can log in, connect to the hub, pair your devices and start creating your personalised lighting schemes. In a market flooded with unnecessarily complex, expensive smart lighting solutions, the Aurora Lighting Group has managed to not only streamline and simplify the application and control, but improve how the installation process is implemented using ergonomic and user-friendly product features – saving both time and money.
