DELMATIC

CUTTING-EDGE DELMATIC SYSTEMS MAXIMISE EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY Delmatic shares some of its most recent projects and highlights the benefits of integrating smart systems into large-scale designs.

T

he world’s first smart lighting control system was supplied by Delmatic in the mid-1960s for BP’s new 35-storey headquarters in London. The tower was described as a ‘genuine modern building with sophisticated services technology’ and not without reason. Every light fitting was individually controlled by a programmable relay; energy efficiency was optimised by daylight-linking; a corridor-hold feature secured exit routes through the building; and the status of lighting within each zone was monitored in real-time on a central control console. Smart, indeed, for 60 years ago, and these fully flexible, sustainable features are still specified on smart projects today.

Battersea Power Station

The cutting-edge system at Battersea Power Station maximises efficiency and sustainability

FCP (Delmatic).indd 4

One of the most recent smart buildings is Battersea Power Station which has been transformed from a disused industrial site into a vibrant mixed-use destination. Delmatic smart systems manage and monitor lighting across the eight million square foot project, which demonstrates Delmatic’s expertise in multiple sectors and technologies. The project won a BREEAM Innovation Credit for the lighting controls described as ‘unique on a global scale’. The holistic IP, DALI, DALI-2, DMX and BACnet system delivers energy optimised lighting schemes throughout the retail and leisure areas, office headquarters workspace, site-wide basements, residential spaces, landscape and public realm, roof-gardens and facades, as well as dynamic colour-control of the iconic chimneys. Data rich sensors form the heart of the smart building eco-system and are constantly monitoring, continually assessing, and imperceptibly adjusting and optimising lighting and connected services, while seamlessly sharing real-time occupancy and other environmental parameters across the IP network via BACnet and MQTT.

Smart Buildings

The cutting-edge system at Battersea Power Station maximises efficiency and sustainability through multi-discipline sensors which monitor presence, daylight, temperature and humidity for optimised control of lighting and HVAC, while the UK’s largest project application of tuneable white biodynamic control with real-time sky tracking enhances occupant comfort, wellness and aesthetics. Daylight linking algorithms dim lighting nearest the facade based upon the extent of daylight while, in bright weather, the system increases the intensity and colour temperature of interior lighting to perceptually extend the effect of the daylight deep into the space. In the mornings, smart biodynamic scenarios adjust the lighting intensity and colour temperature to reflect the brightness of the sky, while in the evenings and during the darker winter months, lighting is adjusted to create a warm and comforting internal environment. Colour temperatures are configured to match the use and function of each space, while scene-set panels

and smart local control devices empower occupants to adjust and fine-tune all aspects of the lighting to meet their individual needs and preference. The Delmatic system configuration incorporates ‘biodynamic neighbourhood’ algorithms which collaboratively interact with lighting colour temperature across adjoining spaces, achieving seamless gradations of colour temperature and avoiding visual clashes of colour temperature within adjacent areas (for example, a corridor alongside a glazed meeting room). Delmatic’s DALI-2 solution extends beyond lighting control to encompass smart environmental monitoring aspects, including temperature and humidity. DALI-2 multi-discipline sensors monitor occupancy and daylight as well as space temperature and humidity, and the sensors share granular real-time intel on occupancy, daylight, temperature and humidity with the BMS network so that not only lighting but also HVAC speed and temperature adjust according to occupancy and environmental conditions.

Smart sensors coupled with occupancy-based data analytics provide powerful tools for the facility manager tasked with reducing electricity consumption and optimising space planning efficiency. Systems constantly track occupancy and movement and gather insightful data about building performance and energy usage. Knowledge empowers FM and HR teams to make buildings even more energy and cost-efficient through astute optimisation of space and environmental parameters, while remote virtual and cloud monitoring analyse building performance against corporate objectives across portfolios of sites. Dynamic data streams from networks of smart sensors map real-time and cumulative occupancy over time as well as tracking and analysing hotspots and movement patterns across a building or campus. Spatial occupancy heatmaps highlight which areas are occupied, for how long and how frequently, while time-lapse sequencing dynamically animates space utilisation over time, enabling flows to be analysed, patterns identified, and strategies created to optimise space and energy utilisation. Delmatic’s latest BLE beaconing macroclimate sensors combine presence, daylight, temperature, humidity and CO2 sensing with integrated BLE beacons for smart wayfinding and asset tracking as well as wireless local control from BLE switches and devices. The BLE beacons share vendor-agnostic messages which can be understood by nearby smartphones, tablets and apps. Integrated control of external DALI lighting at Battersea provides complete control and management of lighting levels, scenes and coordinated colour scenarios to suit daylight ambience as well as synchronise with special events, holidays and festivals. The power station’s four chimneys – world-famous icons on the London skyline – are ringed by DMX colour-changing floodlights, configured and coordinated to create dramatic light shows for special occasions and events, fully synchronised with the DALI lighting management network across the site. The flexibility and versatility of the smart DALI system provided the ideal solution for the complex project, enabling lighting scenarios to be configured to precisely suit the individual requirements within the various spaces. Addressable lighting scenes celebrate the industrial heritage of the mixed-use scheme, achieve a sensitive balance of light and shade, and create a vibrant atmosphere while meeting the functional requirements for safety and security.

@ElecConNews

FCP (Delmatic).indd 5

Delmatic’s user interfaces and applications continuously monitor the complete lighting ecosystem and display real-time granular data and intelligent analytics on lighting performance, including emergency light monitoring and testing, as well as individual lamp and driver failure diagnostics. The system monitors and displays the operational status of every lamp and driver, flags failures in real time, and generates re-lamping plans to ensure the sustainable replacement of luminaires. The smart solution creates flexible workplaces for the future with the versatility to greet whatever new technology or societal challenge that comes along. Adaptable, configurable solutions support a range of activities and working practices, motivate and stimulate individuals and teams, focus on wellbeing, empower individuals with control of their environment, and optimise lighting levels and colour temperature. Smart systems hardness technology to blur the lines between physical and digital environments and make the most of space, delivering timeless, scalable solutions that adapt to the evolving nature of the workplace and accommodate lifetime fit-outs. Delmatic’s scalable and agile digital solutions place flexibility precisely where it is needed, while individual addressing of every luminaire provides absolute versatility to adapt and change lighting configurations.

Elizabeth Line stations are managed and monitored by Delmatic smart systems

@ecn_magazine  electricalcontractingnews.com

Elizabeth Line Delmatic’s scope extends beyond the smart system within Battersea Power Station and its environs to include DALI lighting control solutions in the new Battersea Power Station London Underground station as part of the Northern Line extension. Battersea Power Station Underground Station forms part of a network of London Underground and Elizabeth Line stations managed and monitored by Delmatic smart systems, reinforcing Dematic’s expertise in the transportation and infrastructure sectors. Delmatic DALI systems manage lighting across the Elizabeth Line central London stations, shafts and portals. The Elizabeth Line, Europe’s largest infrastructure project, was the most significant expansion of London’s transport network in over a century and the central section running deep beneath the heart of London involved the boring of 42km of new tunnels and the construction of eight brand new underground stations. The Elizabeth line is the first major sub-surface infrastructure project to be lit entirely by LEDs and the complete lighting installation uses DALI drivers and DALI devices to optimise efficiency, safety and aesthetics. Delmatic DALI systems provide energy-efficient management and monitoring of normal and emergency lighting throughout the Elizabeth line

stations – Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Custom House, Whitechapel and Woolwich – as well as the network of shafts and portals. The project team regarded the lighting design and lighting control as critical, not only for passenger safety but also for enhancing the experience within the subterranean environment. Indirect ambient lighting within concourses, escalator tunnels and platforms enhances the feeling of space, while accent lighting highlights specific features and areas such as help points and escalator landings. The versatility of the Delmatic system enabled ambient and accent lighting levels to be balanced and optimised while also meeting London Underground’s precise requirements for lux levels on the horizontal plane (where passengers step on and off trains and escalators) as well as the vertical plane (to assist in reading display information). For the first time on a rail project, lighting colour temperatures were used to guide passengers through the subterranean stations – cool white lighting encourages movement in transition spaces such as escalators and cross-passages, while warm white lighting is applied on platforms and in areas where passengers gather. DALI Multisensors and Photocells optimise energy efficiency by adapting lighting levels and scenarios to occupancy and daylight, while custom-configured DALI touchscreens and scene-panel switches offer local switching, dimming and scene control. The Delmatic systems within each station integrate via BACnet and SCADA with the BMS over the IP LAN network, forming a key part of the energy management systems throughout the stations and supporting Crossrail’s goals to deliver energy efficient, sustainable solutions for London’s transport network. Smart integration with the BMS enables the lighting network to share status and fault intelligence with the BMS and rail command centre. Interfaces with the station UPS system activate regular emergency lighting tests via the lighting control system to simulate power failure scenarios. The project was the first of this scale to embed sustainable thinking from the outset, and the stations achieved BREEAM ‘very good’ rating – the first time the environmental standard has been applied to underground stations. The Delmatic smart system contributed to this achievement and the line’s legacy as an example of best practice and a benchmark for rail projects around the world.

Zayed International Airport Terminal A

Delmatic supplied the world’s largest DALI lighting control system to the new Zayed International Airport Terminal A

Smart infrastructure projects don’t get much bigger than the new Zayed International Airport Terminal A, which spans 742,000m2, making it one of the largest airport terminals in the world. Delivering a seamless journey with emphasis on passenger experience, energy efficiency and sustainability, everything functions off a digital-first grid, from self-service kiosks to smooth security screening and baggage handling, while biometrics streamline the screening and boarding process from kerb to gate. Delmatic supplied the world’s largest DALI lighting control system, delivering smart lighting management and monitoring as well as interfacing with the BMS, emergency UPS, fire alarm, and AV systems via BACnet/IP and VFC. The system manages and monitors 180,000 DALI lamps, 35,000 DALI emergency lamps, and 10,000 DALI sensors and switches, all coordinated by 3,400 single and multi-universe DALI control modules. The architecture adopted a holistic approach with normal lighting, self-contained emergency lighting and UPS central battery emergency lighting seamlessly managed and monitored across the single site-wide DALI network. DALI was applied strategically throughout the terminal, precisely matching the extent of flexibility required in each area with the optimum installation approach and combining a mixed-mode network of DALI buswire, broadcast and plug-in applications.

electricalcontractingnews.com

@ElecConNews

The terminal’s unique X-shaped floor plan maximises natural light, and DALI multisensors optimise energy efficiency through extensive daylight harvesting and occupancy-based control. DALI technology enables lighting levels to be dynamically matched to use of areas with lighting scenarios activated automatically throughout the day – DALI Scene-set panels provide user control within specialist areas. An innovative application of DALI technology is deployed across the extensive arrival hall turnstiles where green (open) and red (closed) LEDs are activated automatically via an interface with the immigration control portal. The DALI network integrates with the BMS sharing real-time intelligence on occupancy, lighting levels, and operational status as well as active lamp, driver and module failure data. Zonal integration with the fire alarm system automatically activates 100% lighting within the relevant area and disables local device operation in the event of a fire alert. The Delmatic system provides headline data to an emergency dashboard in the fire command centre, highlighting benchmark status of UPS, power, emergency, lamp and driver failure across the zones of the project. Bespoke diagnostics alert the facilities team when certain failure thresholds are reached, enabling a swift and effective response. Sustainable airport operations are essential to the UAE meeting its sustainability targets of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and Terminal A has been

DELMATIC

designed from the outset around those targets. A key design mission was for major reductions in energy consumption achieved through a climate-responsive building facade, smart systems and services, and advanced energy measurement and targeting which monitors and analyses energy performance. The sheer number of DALI fixtures and scale of the terminal was a challenge, particularly when much of the commissioning had to take place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Delmatic’s modular DALI approach and distributed intelligence architecture enabled phased commissioning and addressing across the project, even before the site-wide IP network was up and running. Sustainability is fundamental to the design, construction and operation of the terminal, which was awarded a 3 Pearl rating from the Estidama green building rating system – making it the highest rated airport terminal in the GCC and the largest singular building ever to be rated globally. The unique integration of the UPS emergency lighting recognised that the 30,000 emergency points vastly outnumbered the quantity of UPS points, so the strategic decision was taken for the Delmatic system to manage testing and reporting of both normal and UPS lighting.

University College Hospital’s Grafton Way Building is a prime example of the benefits of smart integration

/electricalcontractingnews

University College Hospital’s Grafton Way Building Energy efficiency is a key challenge in healthcare buildings that are typically highly serviced and have significant costs associated with the energy consumption of sophisticated medical equipment. To maximise energy efficiency, precise integration and coordination of smart building systems and services is a key requirement of health care projects. University College Hospital’s Grafton Way Building is a prime example of the benefits of smart integration, and the building received a rare BREEAM Highly Commended certification. The state-of-the-art hospital complex offers world-class facilities and ground-breaking radiotherapy and cancer treatments. The hospital is home to one of Europe’s largest centres for the treatment of blood disorders as well as a Proton Beam Therapy Centre, one of only two in the UK providing this latest type of radiotherapy treatment. Delmatic DALI lighting management systems extend throughout the 34,500m2 building which comprises six floors above ground and five levels deep below ground. The DALI systems provide flexible, energy efficient monitoring and control of normal and emergency lighting across the site, including reception areas, treatment

rooms, operating theatres, surgical wards, patient rooms, meeting rooms, staff rooms, shared spaces, corridors, plant rooms and external courtyards. The advanced DALI system incorporates comprehensive DALI emergency light testing and monitoring and integrates with the hospital’s site-wide central battery network. Delmatic’s unique asynchronous logic routines enable secure and comprehensive testing of the emergency lighting system across the site, including critical spaces occupied and in use 24 hours a day. The hospital has been designed to maximise the extent of daylight with a central courtyard and atrium allowing natural light to flow into the heart of the building. The precise DALI digital dimming and scene-setting in response to daylighting and occupancy enables the desired and fluid lighting schemes within the various spaces of the hospital while enhancing the comfort and wellbeing of patients and occupants. The Delmatic system minimises energy usage and enhances sustainability and operational efficiency through flexible, energy-efficient digital dimming, integration with connected services and the real-time management, monitoring and sharing of key data. PREFECT CONTROLS

SMART ENERGY AUDITING Adrian Barber explains how using real-time data, collected by Irus from individual rooms, can help when auditing energy use.

What is energy auditing? An energy audit is the collation of information regarding energy use, and the formulation of a plan to reduce consumption without unduly affecting the comfort of those within, or the performance of, the building. A ‘walkabout’ helps to familiarise those conducting the audit with the layout of the building. A visual inspection helps pinpoint the obvious areas of wastage. In service industries, most energy is used for heating and lighting. So, insight is gained by sensing the hot and cold, and light and dark areas as the inspection progresses.

Knowing how a building is used helps with energy planning

Heating consumption per room (December 2023) - the size of circle distinguishes between high and low users across this 175 room site

In accommodation properties, consulting residents on how they use the space will help to establish occupancy patterns, while taking note of grievances they have or discomfort they experience provides a better understanding of how the building is, or should be, performing. Hard facts then come into play with analysis of energy bills and actual kWh of energy used over the course of a year. If data is available for multiple years, it is wise to calculate the average use – this will smooth out the weather-affected peaks and troughs. By logging all these findings, and producing a plan of action, benchmarks are set against which saving initiatives can be measured.

Holistic reviewing of energy use Particularly in accommodation, assessing water consumption alongside space heating and lighting is necessary. A large proportion of energy use will be attributable to water heating. The energy audit examines consumption throughout the year and identifies where savings can be made. As an annual event with markers in place, initiatives can be analysed more accurately. Of course, this is a simplification of the work that goes into an energy audit. But imagine if, rather than ad hoc inspections, minute-by-minute reporting was available, and an automated system was constantly striving to reduce power input. Energy managers would be confident that their buildings were not sucking energy in unnecessarily.

and alert, occupancy or presence reports. The mass of data is easily configured for more bespoke analysis to develop daily, monthly, seasonal or annual illustrations of an individual room’s performance, that of a whole site, or in the case of student accommodation, the national estate. But not just room heating! Irus measures the volume of water flowing into a building’s cylinders and accurately reads and records the temperature of water, deep inside each tank. It also monitors water temperature across the system, from the incoming cold supply to the hot and cold taps, and sends alerts when leaking pipes or tank pressure causes escape of water.

Remote energy auditing

The major contributor to unnecessary consumption of both commodities is the lack of measuring, monitoring and, ultimately, control over use. Irus central control differs from a typical BMS by drilling down and producing a room-by-room picture. Not only reporting on energy use within, but, dependent on occupancy patterns and environmental conditions, it controls input. This is effectively a minute-by-minute energy audit conducted 24/7, 365 days a year.

So, how would a system such as this work? It would need to have outstations, or data collection points, in many and varied locations. These would transmit information to a centrally accessible hub, with the capability of collecting and handling a significant amount of data. It processes the data and produces meaningful reports quickly and accurately. Standard reports include energy use by type, device and room; daily or half hourly on-times; average temperatures;

B.E.G

B.E.G. LAUNCHES A VIRTUALLY ‘INVISIBLE’ PIR SENSOR B.E.G. has launched a new rectangular flat PIR sensor which is virtually ‘invisible’ for ceilings or luminaires.

T

The PD5N PIR sensor has a 9m detection range

he new PD5N detector is the latest product to be introduced by the German manufacturer, combining the advantages of passive infrared sensor technology with intelligent design. Integrated into slat ceilings or luminaires, the sensor is designed to be unobtrusive and can blend in any virtually any room space. The PD5N becomes the latest DALI-2 certified device to be launched by B.E.G ensuring a high level of interoperability so it can be used wherever light and motion detection need to be measured. Paul Jones, Sales Director of UK & Ireland at B.E.G., says the new PIR sensor offers “optimum lighting conditions for working, atmospheric lighting scenes, attendance-dependent blind and lighting control, and attractive design bringing comfort to organisations”. Paul says, “In business premises, offices, conference rooms or classrooms

where detection ranges of less than 10m are required, working and living comfort requirements determine the design. In such cases, it is nice when technology blends into the room design as unobtrusively as possible, and this is exactly what the new B.E.G. PD5N PIR sensor delivers end users.” The PD5N PIR sensor has a 9m detection range and is developed for lamella ceilings or vaulted roofs which typically consist of a criss-crossing pattern of parallel arches skewed to the sides of the covered space. Lamella ceilings tend to be composed of relatively short members hinged together to form an interlocking network in a diamond pattern, such as designed by Interalu with its SAPP ceilings. The unit is pre-wired so it can be plugged in directly and clicked into place. For dark slat ceilings, a sensor with a black housing is available in addition to a white one. The sensor is

also suitable for installation in DALI-2 luminaires and in a luminaire strip. The B.E.G. PD5N detector is characterised by low power consumption of the devices, providing a positive effect on the load of the DALI BUS. The five new instances can be conveniently operated by end users via a B.E.G. mini-IR remote control. Other features include setting options for the resolution of the light sensor from 12 bits to 10 bits, which is designed to achieve greater results of light control in unfavourable room conditions – made via the generically accessible memory bank. The reflection factor can also be set to values between 0.1 and 1.0. This simplifies the use of higher-level visualisations, as the lux value transmitted by the sensor no longer needs to be converted. B.E.G., beg-luxomat.com

IDEAL

SMART TECHNOLOGIES CALL FOR SMART DATA TERMINATIONS As the UK continues to deliver progressive, smart-enabled buildings, Mike Cullom, Northern Europe Sales Manager of IDEAL Industries EMEA, explains why consistent, error-free data network terminations go hand in hand with the smart boom.

hen it comes to all things ‘smart’ in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, the industry is seeing staggering demand. According to recent research[1], the number of buildings globally deploying smart technologies will reach a whopping 115 million in 2026, up from 45 million in 2022. In addition to demand for energy efficient homes and buildings, this huge growth also reflects the increased use of Internet of Things technologies, awareness of safety and security measures, rising living standards and consumer demand for user-friendly, personalised experiences. Smart solutions and services are everywhere. In the office, for example, smart technology has the potential to improve working environments by streamlining processes and reducing time spent on everyday tasks. In the home, technologies such as smart thermostats and smart lighting can save energy and cut bills. In the retail sector, intelligent technology is used to enhance and personalise the customer experience, whilst its use in the hospitality sector adds a layer of luxury to guests’ stays. Smart buildings have the potential to positively impact occupants’ happiness, wellbeing, lifestyle and productivity. But it’s not just occupants reaping the benefits; for building owners, the ability to collect data and track performance results in improved functions, for example minimised energy consumption and optimised space usage.

Smart Buildings

As developers increasingly recognise that buildings can and should do more in terms of energy efficiency and enhanced occupier and owner experiences, it’s easy to see why the smart building market is set to soar in the coming years. From subtle upgrades around the home to the fully AI-powered developments seen in the UK’s major cities, the construction sector must rise to the challenge of installing increasingly sophisticated data networks. What’s more, this complex infrastructure must be installed without delaying the project, either during the build programme or as a result of snagging. This is where the IDEAL Electrical FT-45 Feed-Thru data termination system triumphs. In contrast to the traditional, time-consuming RJ45 assembly and crimping process, the FT-45 system ensures fast and error-free assembly and termination of CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6A cables by eliminating the need to trim conductors to a precise length before inserting the cable into the plug. The FT-45 Feed-Thru Modular Plugs are single-piece connectors, so there is no need for installers to assemble a three-piece connector. Nor do conductor wires need to be accurately trimmed to a specific length; instead, installers simply remove an appropriate section of jacket,

remove the centre spline (if present), untwist the pairs into the correct order, and trim the ends flat. The cable can then be slid into the connector until seated. The unit features open ends that allow conductors to be completely fed through the connector before crimping. The cable can be pushed into the connector to ensure the twisted pairs are as close to the pin contacts as possible, and that the jacket is seated beyond the primary strain relief for a secure connection. Developed with a clear connector design, the installer can visually inspect and verify the correct wiring order with ease. To complete the process, the installer places the assembled plug into the compact and easy-to-use FT-45 Crimp Tool and squeezes the handle to the closed position. As more and more buildings are developed and retrofitted to deliver all things smart, network termination issues risk delaying important build projects. However, the IDEAL Electrical solution offers complete consistency for every termination.
