From The

Editor’s Desk Spring has sprung Niamh Marriott, Editor

The daffodils are blooming, the lambs are bleating and the bunnies are frolicking in the fields. Yes, it’s all gone a bit Wordsworth here at the EI offices, there’s even been a visit from the ice cream van. With spring and sunshine getting people outside to soak up the rays, what better time to think about outdoor AV solutions. Ever since joining this industry I have been mightily impressed by discreet outdoor speakers that are concealed as rocks, boulders or integrated into outdoor furniture. A particularly memorable experience was at CEDIA 2017, when Pulse Cinemas invited me to a garden decked out with James Loudspeaker equipment that absolutely amazed, with discreet devices producing spectacularly rich sound. The quality was undeniable. As well as sound, smart lighting can transform an outside space, provide security and create a delightful ambience. There are also a variety of outdoor TVs, projectors and screens, and a whole host of AV options for the garden.

I’m so excited to check out the outdoor offerings at this year’s EI Live! exhibition at Sandown Park, as well as all the brilliant brands showcasing the latest and greatest technologies. This is my inaugural attendance to this longstanding show and I can’t wait to see what’s on display. I’m looking forward to chatting with all of our exquisite exhibitors bringing smart home realness and technical know-how to the tradeshow, catching up with old friends and meeting new faces. There’s been a real shake up of structure, with brand new learning zones introduced including the Retra Smart Home Seminar and Technical Theatre which both boast superb speakers, so I’m keen to pop along to the panel shows and get involved in some real opinion forming content. Ready to party? We’ve got the Smart Building Awards gala dinner on the evening of May 9, and it’s set to be a night to remember. If you’ve not already, register for the show for free online at essentialinstalllive.com, get down to Sandown and I’ll see you there!

2018 CEDIA Awards to be held at British Museum CEDIA has announced that the 2018 CEDIA Awards programme will be hosted at the British Museum in London on September 27. “The CEDIA Awards is always a night to remember,” comments Matt Nimmons, managing director of CEDIA EMEA. “We’re excited to welcome our members to enjoy a fantastic evening amongst the most treasured artefacts from across the globe. The British Museum offers the perfect environment to toast technical excellence and product innovation, where the splendour of our members’ projects will no doubt rival the Museum display.” The black-tie event will commence with a drinks reception in the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery, giving members an opportunity to network with their peers amongst symbolic objects, stylised deities, and architectural pieces from ancient temples and tombs. An imposing stone bust of the great pharaoh, Ramesses II presides over the room, while the world-famous Rosetta Stone, with its inscribed scripts, will no doubt impress. The Awards dinner will be hosted under the spectacular glass roof in the Great Court at the heart of the Museum. To conclude the evening, a post-ceremony celebration will follow in the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery. The 2018 CEDIA Awards is open for entries. Categories include: Integrated Home; Media Room; Home Cinema; Innovative Solution or System; Showroom; Auto, Marine, or Aircraft; and Multiple Dwelling Unit Design. The integration of Alexa-enabled devices allows homeowners to use voice commands

SCP AWE, URC and Alexa give total control Distributor AWE has announced the arrival of the Amazon Alexa Smart Home Skill integration for URC’s Total Control 2.0 control system to the UK market. This new integration with the Alexa-enabled Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Amazon Fire TV, welcomes a host of control possibilities for installs with URC’s new Total Control 2.0 platform. The integration of Alexa-enabled devices with URC Total Control allows homeowners to use voice commands to complete programmed macros without the need for a button press. As consumer awareness on voice activation devices has increased, this new update from URC provides an established and installer-ready option for the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot devices. With simple, intuitive commands, homeowners can select TV programmes, activate whole-home music systems, control window shading, adjust lighting and much more. Any individual Total Control macro can be controlled via the Alexa integration. This new module works by using Alexa Smart Home Skills. With these skills, Alexa-enabled devices can respond to either of the following two commands: “Alexa … TURN ON” and “Alexa … TURN OFF”. URC has created a useful guide for installers to understand more about integrating Alexa home automation and control into a Total Control macro. With Total Control 2.0, installers can personalise a URC system using a fully customisable colour scheme. They can also add images to help define room, scene and background settings. Either single devices or scenes can take preference on the interface to meet the individual needs of homeowners. Up to 100 scenes can be preprogrammed for immediate access to a specific command. AWE also provides training at its Smart Home Academy centre and a URC Total Control specific course is available. AWE 01372 729 995, awe-europe.com

Yamaha mixes with the best at Abbey Road

Studio Two was made most famous by The Beatles

On March 14, around 60 of the UK’s most renowned live mixing engineers, theatre sound designers and representatives of audio rental companies assembled in the legendary Studio Two at London’s Abbey Road Studios for an informal workshop on Yamaha’s RIVAGE PM series digital mixing systems. “This was a way of giving key members of the UK pro audio community a chance to informally network and learn more about Yamaha’s RIVAGE PM series systems, in an inspiring location and friendly, low-key atmosphere,” said Yamaha commercial audio UK/RoI sales manager Alex Warren, who co-ordinated the event with UK/RoI marketing manager Chris Irvine. After meeting for a complimentary lunch and free bar, Jamiroquai’s Derrick MacKenzie (drums), Matt Johnson (keyboards), Paul Turner (bass) and Hazel Fernandez (vocals) performed a few songs, mixed by the band’s Front of House engineer Rick Pope on the Yamaha RIVAGE PM10, through a Nexo M10 PA system and 45N12 monitors. Yamaha’s Andy Cooper then hosted an interesting Q&A session with Rick, which included questions from the assembled guests. From here, guests were able to get hands-on with the RIVAGE PM systems – a brand new PM7, supplied by Subfrantic Production Services, and two PM10s. “We are very grateful to all our guests who made this event such a tremendous success,” adds Alex. “Rick Pope, the band and the staff at Abbey Road Studios, the Subfrantic productions team, Yamaha and Nexo all worked very hard to make it happen, so it was very rewarding to receive many positive responses.”

OPPO Digital to cease development of new products OPPO Digital has been established in the US for over 14 years, and with the support of customers, technical partners, and movie/music studios, OPPO produced many award-winning Hi-Fi audio products and universal disc players, spanning three generations from DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K UHD. Now the company will be gradually stopping all manufacturing of new products, though existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. Firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time. Customers can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high-quality service and support that they have come to expect from OPPO Digital. OPPO Digital UK will continue to trade while stocks last. However, it expects to close its doors in the Summer. Technical support, warranty claims, servicing and spares will in future be handled by a third party, with details to follow. All commitments made by OPPO Digital UK will be met. Nigel Rich, managing director of OPPO Digital UK commented, “We can be very proud of our achievements over the past few years. Smart security

Exclusively distributed by Invision UK, Manchester-based GJD Manufacturing designs, manufactures and supplies professional external detector equipment. GJD’s extensive product portfolio ranges from CCTV and lighting controllers to its Clarius range of white-light and infrared LED illuminators, used for the intruder surveillance industry. EI caught up with Invision’s security sales specialist, Karl Brett, to find out more. How does TechSmart integrate with other products and systems?

Recently, GJD launched its professional TechSmart home automation solutions that combine GJD’s IP enabled detectors and illuminators with smart home technology. The range provides plenty of technology integration options for the custom installer and TechSmart can be easily integrated with existing home automation and building management systems. TechSmart products can also be installed as standalone intelligent IP devices, allowing residential property owners to create smart customised actions to suit specific requirements.

How does the Techsmart range differ from other products?

GJD’s high performance, professional infra-red and white light Techsmart LED illuminators are the perfect night-time lighting solution. They are specifically designed to have a long life and ultra-low maintenance, with the added benefit of being able to adjust the illuminator’s field of view and so match it to that of the camera or detector. Techsmart lights are competitively priced and provide high performance LED lighting ideal for urban and rural environments. Incorporating the latest surface mount LEDs with enhanced optical output, the Techsmart illuminator delivers high quality night-time images, as well as working in conjunction with black and white or day and night cameras, providing a light invisible to the human eye, but fully visible to the CCTV camera. Each unit is fitted with integrated control circuitry to carefully control LED output, delivering consistent illumination. A number of camera manufacturers provide options with built-in LED illumination. These variants are sometimes referred to as ‘bullet cameras’ where the LEDs are positioned in a circle around the lens. The downside to this design is typically a restricted and rather narrow illumination field of view, plus the LEDs attract insects, for example spiders, and invariably the camera’s vision becomes impaired due to cobwebs etc. Discreet standalone illuminations offer long range and adaptable illumination that significantly enhances CCTV recordings and facial recognitions. Although the camera images from cameras with builtin IR can be improved by switching on some automatic functions, this can result in motion blur due to low shutter speeds, poor depth of field (due to wide aperture settings) and overall inferior image quality (due to high gain settings). Using a high quality external Techsmart illuminator can considerably enhance CCTV image quality and I believe GJD Techsmart illuminators outperform the competition and are the ideal choice for the professional CCTV user.

GJD’s portfolio of systems, including drivers for Control4, Crestron and RTI, have been designed to provide two-way control via Ethernet for the GJD TechSmart range. The TechSmart product range includes an IP anything module, external IP enabled detectors and external perimeter illuminators. TechSmart’s accurate perimeter motion sensors and LED illuminators, along with their integrated Lux and ambient temperature transmitters, provide early intruder warning and environmental data to create actions and alerts based on programmed automation rules.

Why do you offer both wired and wireless solutions?

In an ever-changing fast-paced technology-driven world, it is imperative that manufacturers offer both wired, including IP enabled, and wireless solutions. GJD has a range of wired detectors and illuminators which are ideal for new builds. In those instances where running cables is not always practical or desired, for example an out-building or retrofits, GJD offer a complete wireless solution using bespoke or third-party radio technology. Wireless technology is now a well-accepted and a reliable alternative to traditional wired systems.

What support services are offered for both the installer and the end-user?

At Invision, I am the dedicated security sales specialist and am on hand to assist dealers with pre-sales support on specifying GJD solutions as part of a system. I also support on our other security brands, LILIN, Satel and Comelit. We are always more than happy to attend sites to assist with first time GJD installers. Invision have a technical support team manned by experienced technical staff who are at hand to answer any post sale technical queries and GJD’s website provides a comprehensive source for product manuals, install guides and FAQs. OneAV Gallery at Sandown 2018

New to the EI Live! showfloor this year will be the ‘OneAV Gallery’ on stands 37-42. An island of awesome AV demos from a fast-growing specialist connectivity distributor with a wide range of fantastic brands. Demo the Remote and Brain combo in a real multizone setup scenario.

The new MHUB AUDIO 4-zone 110w matrix-amp will be providing the soundtrack to the OneAV Gallery

Recently appointed OneAV chief quality officer, Daniel Adams, has been organising the UK/German distributor’s booth this year and this is what he had to say about the OneAV Gallery: “A few factors have resulted in OneAV needing a much bigger presence at Sandown this year. Firstly, OneAV are focused on catering for those CIs working in both residential and commercial projects, so we have multiple solutions to showcase AV connectivity in business environments such as meeting/huddle rooms, multizone audio, plus videowall or tiler solutions for big impact visuals. Second, we have some scintillating new product additions from OneAV’s smart home brands, with HDANYWHERE’s MHUB AUDIO matrixamp and the famous NEEO remote allowing us to deliver more complete solutions for our dealers. And third, we need the space for good real-life demonstrations! A must in my opinion for making trade shows worthwhile. A few of my personal recommendations for not-to-miss demonstrations at the OneAV Gallery are:

NEEO

The much-publicised NEEO Remote never fails to attract attention wherever it goes. Everyone who walks by it just wants to pick it up and have a play. At EI Live! attendees will not only have the chance to use and demo NEEO, but also meet Founder Raphael Oberholzer in person.

HDANYWHERE

The centralised HDMI video distribution specialists have added multizone audio into their repertoire with the introduction of the MHUB AUDIO. A 55W per channel, 110W per zone, 4-zone matrix-amp with EQ, sub outs and all the trimmings. Whether you’re a fan of apps or not, it’s worth checking out HDA’s patented uControl technology – it often impresses even the biggest of sceptics.

JUST ADD POWER

AVoIP originals J+P recently rebutted Crestron rather publicly on YouTube, hitting back with a pixel-perfect demo of 4K over IP with 16ms of latency. A similar side-byside will be on demo in the OneAV Gallery.

PIXELGEN

THX-Certified HDMI interconnects from a Canadian startup that makes the purest uncompressed solutions that work up to 50m, simply and reliably. Their latest product PXLGLASS will be on demo – a glass fibre cable that supports full bandwidth 18G (& beyond), perfect for the most demanding content and projectors. This art loving New Yorker wanted high-quality music

Meridian marvels in Manhatten This Manhattan corner apartment is not only a feast for the eyes, with curated art adorning every spare inch of wall space, and a fantastic view of the Empire State Building, but it is also a feast for the ears. Three Meridian systems fill the compact space with highquality sound, from the living spaces to the bedroom areas. “The homeowner wanted to be able to listen to music in a way that would do the beautiful surroundings justice, without taking away from the aesthetics,” says Anthony Chrisostomo, managing director of Home Theater of Long Island (HTOLI). “We turned to Meridian to offer elevated sound that also solved specific design challenges within the property.”

Art and audio combine in this New York apartment

Showcasing the view One of those challenges was presented in the living room, with its floor-to-ceiling windows. Naturally, the homeowner didn’t want to obstruct the view, so Chrisostomo and his team installed a 2.1 system using two horizontal DSP5200HC Meridian loudspeakers and a Meridian DSW subwoofer. The 5200HC loudspeakers can be placed lower down thanks to Meridian’s Centre Elevation Adjustment technology, which raises the perceived image location for a lifelike listening experience. This allowed HTOLI to place the loudspeakers so as not to obstruct the Manhattan skyline, yet still deliver a realistic sound. The 5200HC loudspeaker contains its own internal amplifier, which also means that the team were able to install a shorter rack with fewer amps centralised in the office closet, further reducing associated heat. “This allows the homeowner to use the office closet for other things in an apartment where space is at a premium,” says Chrisostomo.

Just look at the state of that view, the audio had to compliment and not distract

The bedroom can deliver TV audio enhancement or just audio

Working with both the homeowner and the interior designer, HTOLI integrated a Meridian DSW subwoofer into the room’s sound system, in keeping with the homeowner’s love for art. The C- shaped wooden pedestal was used to mount a sculpture along one wall of windows, whilst discreetly occupying the Meridian subwoofer at the same time. The office also presented a design challenge given the compressed space. “The homeowner still wanted good quality audio, but because this is a work space, nothing too over the top” says Chrisostomo. “We chose the Meridian M6 loudspeakers, which sound incredible for

their footprint and fill a space with sound as opposed to directional listening.” Not to be neglected, the bedroom contains two different audio systems that share the same subwoofer. The first is an audio system that compliments TV viewing, and the other is a Meridian audio system designed to let the homeowner enjoy music, even in this small space. Due to the number of artworks on the walls, there was a limited amount of space available in this room for audio. HTOLI used Meridian DSP620 in-wall loudspeakers, which can be installed horizontally, above both the artworks and the TV for a more detailed sound. “My goal in marrying the Meridian DSP620s with the Bowers & Wilkins subwoofer was to provide the client with a visceral experience — music she would feel,” says Chrisostomo. He used the Meridian Sooloos system volume control to keep the levels between the two systems consistent, despite their disparate uses. The Sooloos feeds all three sets of loudspeakers, controllable by the Sooloos app on the homeowner’s smartphone or iPad. This visual music management interface makes it easy to store a complete CD collection, upload digital music, or stream music. Chrisostomo adds, “You benefit from better quality, and because of Meridian’s MQA, you get the full bandwidth of the music and don’t lose any imaging.” With high sound merging with high art, city vistas mixed with exquisite interior design, this Manhattan apartment offers an altogether unique experience that has achieved all the homeowner’s goals, without compromising on performance or aesthetics. Layout, decor, acoustics and comfort are all top of the agenda when designing the perfect cinema

Designing bespoke cinema solutions

Nic Black, managing director of CEDIA member company, The Pyramid Group, discusses the key considerations for technology integrators and the best approach to designing bespoke cinema solutions. As CEDIA members, our key role is to provide our clients with both the benefit of our technical experience, as well as creative input. We are an industry partner of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), and as such, we make a significant effort to ensure that the integration of our technologies work in harmony with the interiors of a space. Over the years, we have been lucky enough to be involved in some incredible bespoke projects, such as award-winning luxury cinemas, through to fully automated homes. In every case, as CEDIA members, we recognise the important part we play in realising a complete and integrated solution is delivered. When designing a unique cinema environment, we make sure that we deliver technically correct designs that are in line with industry guidelines. The next and most important step is to ensure that the environment meets or exceeds the client’s expectations in terms of layout, décor, and overall comfort. We all understand that this isn’t necessarily a straightforward process, and rarely do you find yourself working in the perfect environment for a cinema. So, as always, the simple rules of engagement include consideration for viewing angles and screen sizes, projection housings, furniture, lighting design, and the all-important tech balance in relation to budget vs performance. One area that is sometimes overlooked is the acoustic response and performance of a space. In our experience, ensuring that the project stakeholders understand the

A cinema environment has to be both aesthetically and acoustically ideal

enormous impact poor acoustics will have on any audio solution is crucial. You can sell the most expensive and powerful audio processing setup, but end up with a cacophony of noise mixed with a large dose of disappointment if you are not too careful! In other words, if the interior designer is intent on putting hard tiled floors and glass everywhere, then they and the client need to understand the practicalities of that decision and the end result. This is where we step in to guide the project at an early stage, to educate and hopefully create an environment that is acoustically ideal, as well as aesthetically pleasing. In the case of new build projects, we will try and work with architects (and interior designers if the project is large enough) and advise them, not just on the shape of the room, but the way that the room design will impact on the acoustics and sonic success of the cinema. There are lots of ‘off the shelf’ acoustic packages available today, but sometimes the success is in the way they are deployed, either invisibly or with some creative flair. Bespoke solutions are as much about working with our fellow professionals and clients, to let them understand how our equipment integrates and how we need the environment to operate. We then make sure that the space is designed around the tech, so as to create the look and feel that the client wants, whether that’s a themed look, or perhaps they are keen to have their technology ‘on show’. Often the client looks to us for guidance on the aesthetics, so a huge part of what we do is coming up with 3D renders and sketches of a design, and perhaps even a virtual reality (VR) model. Not everyone can visualise a space. It’s our job to come up with interesting and creative designs that allow the cinema space to take on its own identity. This might be a dedicated themed cinema, or a contemporary space capable of being mixed use environment. Overall, as cinema designers we need to be mindful of a range of aesthetic aspects and technical considerations, which in turn will come together to form a client’s own unique and bespoke cinema. Integrating the IoT

Habitech’s technical manager, Justin Martin Lawrence, explains the different thinking behind the new wave of IoT devices and how they can be integrated within smarter homes. When 99% of CI jobs involve networking, the industry needs a way to unite legacy control systems with next gen IoT devices on the same platform

The IoT is everywhere. These days you would struggle to find a home that has a traditional control system without also having at least one IoT device. Whether it’s a camera or a thermostat, a light bulb or a Tesla car - even a child’s dolly - thousands of household products are equipped to communicate directly with the internet rather than the control system. This is the new way of things, and numbers will skyrocket. The big question for a CI industry weaned on proprietary control ecosystems is how to integrate the Internet of Things with whole-house control. When 99% of CI jobs involve networking, we have a responsibility to our clients and businesses to answer this question. We cannot ignore IoT in the hope that it will go away, so let’s first understand why it exists and how it works.

Why IoT?

Before the influx of IoT devices things were easier for CI, but harder for consumers. In the CI world control APIs were relatively simple, network traffic was significantly lower, and thermostats did not talk to the internet. Companies like Nest were never going to get a prettylooking thermostat to mass-market unless it was smarter than all the others and easier to install. Cost was also a consideration, so putting heavy processing in a wallmounted device was out of the question. But everything would change if you created a device that could intelligently track things like a building’s thermal efficiency whether the customer was at home or not. The local functionality would be simple to achieve: you’d have a microprocessor looking at area temperature and add a simple PIR-type device to detect when there is movement in the house. What you’d need is a way of collecting that information and putting it to good use. Hey presto, IoT.

So how does IoT work?

It’s not like poking a hole in a firewall to access a network camera. It actually works the other way around. Every home network has a router with a firewall, which stops things getting in unless something inside the network has asked for it. When you register your Nest thermostat or smoke alarm, it creates a connection through your router to the Nest Cloud on the internet. From time-to-time the thermostat sends out information like temperature, presence etc, and because there’s a connection from within the firewall, the cloud can send instructions back without being blocked. It can also send software updates and so on. This means that every time you open the Nest app on your iPad, you are communicating through a secure Internet connection to the Nest Cloud, rather than to the thermostat itself, which in turn receives its instructions from the cloud. Applying the same logic to Amazon’s Alexa for instance means that the voice recognition functionality sits in the cloud, not in the device or any other on your local network. This is brilliant for device manufacturers and for consumers. The customer plugs in the device, registers it, and everything starts working. Interaction with the IoT device appears to be effortless because the instructions being sent to and from the cloud are part of the same platform. Furthermore it doesn’t matter whether the customer is at home, at work or on holiday. It just works.

Levering-in a control system

The problem with any traditional control platform is that it relies on an API/Driver provided by the device manufacturer. Whereas IoT manufacturers can update the APIs for the devices remotely and at will, there is an inevitable lag to their implementation within an ‘alien’

Simple Control ties IoT and the trad control system together on the new V5 app for iPad

control system. When a local API/driver must rely on third-party updates to perform complex security transactions, the integration of IoT control often seems as if it’s held in-place with sticky tape.

A better method of control

Tear yourself away from thinking of home control through a proprietary (and usually expensive) user interface with preferences prescribed by the control system designer. The new wave of IoT devices may operate along individual links to the cloud, but collectively they share the benefits of a well-developed application for iOS and Android, bristling with user experience (UX) features including gesture and voice control. And in place of comparatively primitive proprietary screens, IoT devices can rely on a highly sophisticated and near universal control platform already in liberal use around the homes of their customers. The iPad, the Galaxy, the Fire HD are the best examples of the home control screens of the future, available today. Not only can they provide local and IoT control, they can multitask with several apps running simultaneously on split screen views (iOS11 and Android N) making it easy to switch between IoT vendor apps and control system apps.

Simple home

In this new world of home control possibilities, today’s integrators need a global platform that integrates everything in the home. I use SimpleControl. This is an iOS-based control system, designed from the ground up to integrate tightly with IoT but also provide an IP, IR and Serial bridge to control the great majority of home

devices, including existing control systems. Running on a new V5 platform and App, the SimpleControl UX provides preloaded and predesigned graphics, protocols and IP/ serial/IR codes for tens of thousands of products and services, allowing customers to engage with their wholehome audio, video, lighting, heating and security systems in the manner they prefer, on the iPads they already own. Use SimpleControl5 on an iPad to take control of individual devices from ergonomically streamlined ‘action panels’; shortcut access to all of them from the new home bar feature, and enjoy a global view of the entire control environment from freshly-designed ‘dashboard’ screens. You can search and navigate more easily via keyboard input, and browse/customise interactive TV and media guides for all UK services. What’s more, all of this supreme split-screen multitasking is enhanced by a P-I-P mode, which allows you to view security cameras or live TV on the iPad while controlling something else. In place of endless, tedious programming driving ‘floppy’ connections with IoT infrastructure, SimpleControl ties all of the old and the new together with a brilliant UX on a familiar and inexpensive control screen. From installation to integration and operation, home control is, well, simpler and more powerful.

Manage integrating multiple systems with confidence

Integration of interconnected electrical systems in buildings is becoming a bigger priority as technology advances. Gone are the days when a trusty roll of T&E, a pair of side-cutters and a couple of standard-size screwdrivers was sufficient to install the majority of a project. Multiple electrical, communications, on-demand entertainment and networked systems often co-exist in the same building. Installing and working with these systems offers new challenges to electrical contractors.

This Code of Practice will help you to: Save time and effort by learning how to recognise issues before they become problems Be armed with the information you need for best installation practices before a project begins Find answers from experts with real experience in systems integration Learn which trade bodies can help you during your project Understand common myths and the realities behind them when working with connected systems It’s important to ensure that systems are installed correctly to minimise the risk of unreliable operation, or disabling of functions, or a lowering of quality in entertainment systems.

Alltrade will be presenting a range of brands

All-Rack cabinets first appeared in 2003 offering a limited range of floor and wall cabinets. Since then, the range has expanded and consists of 26 different sizes of floor cabinets and 14 different sizes of wall cabinets, as well as a very comprehensive range of accessories. STAND #13 Alltrade is a trade distributor for signal reception and distribution, custom install, home automation and security products for both residential and commercial projects. Sonos, Blustream, Sanus, Niles Audio, Ubiquiti, Hikvision, HDL and many other key brands are available from Alltrade’s seven trade counters across the country with deliveries by its own fleet. The company offers free training, planning and support services and its experienced sales team together with highly respected technical staff means Alltrade really do offer a complete service. STAND #135 is essential, which is why CYP takes training extremely seriously. At its state-of-the-art AV Academy based in its Shepperton HQ, CYP delivers two courses aimed at both the beginner and expert AV installer, which both follow a practical and hands-on look at the AV industry. Supporting a number of crucial topics and solutions that the modern day installer and integrator will face on a daily basis, delegates learn the very latest techniques to aid in the design, specify, implement and test AV distribution systems for both residential and commercial applications. CYP often takes its training courses on the road across the UK and into Europe. For delegates that struggle to get to Shepperton, this initiative is ideal, as CYP is conscious that time is tight yet training in today’s quick-moving technological world is vital! This is one of the key reasons as to why CYP is delighted to sponsor this year’s EI Live! The development of the all-new Technical Theatre mirrors just how important the sharing of knowledge is and is a subject that CYP is extremely passionate about. #Technical Theatre Aerials and Cables Equipment distribute key product ranges for the AV install market, offering specialist training for SONOS audio, fibre optic TV distributions for SkyQ upgrades & HDBaseT certification, which assists with installation of the HDAnywhere MHUB 4K Pro with the uControl app. The company has a range of multiroom UHD TV equipment, for both domestic and commercial applications, and data networking solutions including Ubiquity, TP Link, as well as the new Clear Flow range. Essential Install | Lighting & Lighting Control

Get lit Lighting control can transform a room from day to night, from a working home office to a relaxed reading space, and it’s only getting smarter. Blind control is often considered for installations now, and the options are ever-expanding, especially with new outdoor solutions. EI sheds light on the nicest and brightest. Philips is officially taking its smart lighting product range to the great outdoors, as the company has announced its first lighting range designed for use outside the home. The new range includes wall-mounted luminaires, spot lighting and pillar posts. The new products span both the Philips Hue white and Philips Hue white and colour ambiance ranges. That means users have the choice of whether they want to simply brighten up the outside of their homes or to give it a splash of colour. “Our customers are always looking for new ways to extend their smart lighting system and the new Philips Hue outdoor range takes it a huge step further,” says Sridhar Kumaraswamy, business leader home systems & luminaires at Philips Lighting.

Philips Hue now offers garden solutions too

“While Philips Hue bulbs and luminaires are available for every area inside your home, we wanted to traverse the threshold and offer connected luminaires designed for outside areas. The outdoor range enables you to make the most of your outside areas, be it creating the ideal ambiance to host a BBQ at the weekend or beautifying your garden.”

Outdoor smart lighting

The outdoor range is smart and can be connected to Alexa or the Google Assistant, allowing users to control the outdoor lighting with their voice. All Philips Hue outdoor products are designed to be easy to install and are based on a plug and play system, making installation easy and allowing for full flexibility to position wherever the user needs the light. The products have a colour temperature range of 22006500 Kelvin and feature 16 million colours. Available through AWE, The Philips Hue personal wireless lighting kit offers a complete smart lighting control solution for custom installers. It is a Wi-Fi enabled light source, offering the end user control over light output through an app. With the ability to create over 16 million colour combinations, use ‘wakeup’ functions and choose from pre-configured scenes, the Hue is a personal, smart lighting device. The Hue can be integrated within the Philips Dynalite lighting control system.

LightwaveRF have signed a deal with John Lewis

HDL’s lighting keypads are highly customisable

products below, whilst encouraging customers to move freely and explore the store. Perimeter joinery displays wrap the external walls and feature integrated luminaires that provide an extra layer of contrast. Feature floral displays are illuminated with miniature downlights that punctuate the columns, washing light over the installations and bringing them to life. HDL’s portfolio of stylish lighting and home automation keypads continues to expand and is available from Alltrade. The HDL portfolio comprises a large number of lighting control keypads and wall panels that can be programmed and controlled from the HDL app. With a broad range of styles, finishes and colours available, HDL controllers are a neat and attractive solution giving users full control from the wall panel or an app. LightwaveRF may have been bolstering its coffers to ensure that it can compete with Nest and Hive, but this smart home firm has just earnt itself a place in front of thousands of consumers as it has signed an agreement with John Lewis to stock its products. The DIY smart home market is growing at an exponential rate, and that’s largely thanks to companies such as LightwaveRF. While the big players concentrate on smart heating or smart light bulbs, LightwaveRF has been developing integrated solutions that are a bit more advanced, including smart power outlets and light switches. Agreements are already in place between LightwaveRF and technology distributor Exertis, as well as deals with City Electrical Factors, Edmundson Electrical, Stearn Electric Co and YESSS Electrical. Andrew Pearson, chief executive of Lightwave, says, “We entered 2018 with an intent to add further partners that complement and extend our distribution capability. This new set of contracts means we have achieved this and put in place relationships with distributors whose Europe-wide operations will also aid us in launching our international device range later this year.” A recent project has shown how retail outlets can gain an advantage through customer centric lighting as French natural beauty brand L’Occitane en Provence, has opened an iconic new flagship store on Regent Street, creating an immersive experience that offers customers an exploration of L’Occitane’s full range of beauty products. Nulty + Retail were brought in to aid customer navigation through the store. The naturally warm interior palette is complemented by the use of high CRI LEDs, which bring out the true colour in the materials used, emphasising the warmth and natural ethos of the brand and emulating the ‘golden hour’ of light. Incorporating layers of light was key to the success of this scheme. The ceiling was kept clean and uncluttered with carefully positioned downlights that cast light on the

High demand

Steve Simper Alltrade’s MD comments, “We are seeing a huge increase in demand for lighting control systems in homes and our trade customers are really capitalising on this growth. Smaller lighting projects are simplified thanks to HDL retro-fit wall keypads, many of which slot straight into an existing lighting back box. HDL has really opened up lighting control possibilities for our trade customers and the range continues to expand.” With all HDL lighting controllers on the HDL Buspro platform, lights can be programmed to switch on, off, dim or flash if the security system has been breached. They can also be set on a timer to create a sense of security for the end-user. The system can be easily integrated with Demopad control software and a host of other third-party systems to create full lighting scenes around the home. For installers building a lighting platform onto existing CI control systems, HDL integrates with DALI, DMX and several other systems as well as a wide range of lighting technologies including LED. HDL’s Trailing Edge dimmer series ensure the maximum compatibility with dimmable LED lights and the low-voltage LED control products allow for RGB colour changing with minimum wiring fuss. Crestron solutions offer customisable control of all lights, plus control of everything else in the home at the touch of a button, offering both wired and wireless control solutions that integrate with third party systems. Crestron’s recent partnerships with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant enable even easier lighting control with voice commands. The company’s new remotes (HR-310 & TSR-310) and Horizon Keypads (coming soon) are stylish alternatives to the standard light switch.

Throwing shade

When discussing a full lighting solution, Crestron considers shading to be a vital aspect of this. Natural light can dramatically affect the artificial lighting scenes that a client wishes to create, and Crestron recommend combining lighting with a shading solution to maximise the effect of light in the home at various times of the day. Sensory controls are always a great option for its clients, Crestron says, and the company can offer total flexibility and choice on the design of the lighting solution. For example, LED controls integrated with sensory controls create a daylight harvesting solution that automatically optimises light levels throughout the day, with no adverse impact on the comfort of users within the room. This means that the lights will be automatically switched off or reduced to around 10% brightness when there is plenty of daylight, or when there is nobody present in that particular room. Security lights also have sensory options.

KNX cables are being increasingly used in both commercial and high-end residential applications for total building control. The TruLighting KNX cable has been tested and certified by the KNX Association for guaranteed compatibility with KNX devices and equipment. Stocked in one or two pair, green or white, external and armoured versions are also from stock. Since CPR became a legal requirement in July 2017, all TruLighting cables have been independently tested in the UK to EN50575, the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Class Eca. Commenting on the rise of smart lighting solutions, Mark Booth, sales director at Gira UK, says, “Modern buildings are already being designed with highly intuitive and intelligent systems that are creating a working brain within the home that convenes to the home-owners lifestyle, personal preferences and daily routine. Lighting is key when it comes to the growth for smart home technology and it is now able to benefit the kitchen space too. Whether reactive/sensitive operation, remote access, programming and control or simply, offering improved utility and convenience, smart lighting is able to control brightness of the orientation light, devise lighting scenes tailored to the individual, as well as offer intelligent range detection through doors and walls including materials such as glass, stone, plasterboard and wood.” Gavin Williams, marketing manager for electrical accessories manufacturer Hamilton Litestat agrees, saying, “We’ve seen an increasing market demand for smart controls thanks to changing lifestyle choices.” He says, “Smart controls, particularly smart lighting control, are becoming popular. Seen as a luxury feature, homeowners are increasingly looking to incorporate these high-technology solutions in their homes.”

Motion sensors

The lighting control can extend into the outside space with Hamilton Air Wireless Switching. This enables remote control of multiple lighting circuits and external electrical devices. Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensors can also be installed so lighting automatically responds to motion in the garden or within the home. Additionally, photocell sensors that respond to ambient light can also be incorporated. For over twenty years, RGB Communications has partnered Lutron and together offer dealers the tools to provide the most exclusive homes with the very best in lighting / shade control says the distributor. Since the innovation of LED technology, lighting control has changed significantly. Increased use of DALI control in the home and the requirement for home owners to integrate their shading with the lighting control are now the norm. Lutron has developed EcoSystem technology which adds additional features on a similar base as DALI, which includes support for up to 64 zones per Link. EcoSystem devices are guaranteed to avoid pop-on, stepping, flicker, or ‘popcorn’ effect which are all common issues associated with dimming (the currently unregulated) LED light sources. Adding Lutron’s Lumaris linear lighting and Finiré recessed downlights creates an end to end guaranteed solution. Lutron has kept its product development initiatives on the move with fresh introductions at ISE 2018 including a new retrofit RF inline dimmer and switch range that is easy and convenient to install, and works via the Homeworks QS Main repeater.

Blinding light Lutron offers Sivoia QS shading solutions

Hamilton Litestat has received growing demand for its Smart Lighting Control system, which can be managed with two types of touchscreen control plates; the capacitive touch Linea-Vetro CFX Glass Controller, or the resistive touchscreen controller that can be coordinated with other Hamilton wiring accessories. The system can also be linked to and controlled by an iOS/Android app.

Alongside electric light, Lutron offers Sivoia QS shading solutions that provide natural light control with roller blinds, curtain tracks and venetian blinds. Top features include ultra-quiet performance, simple Homeworks QS integration and stand-alone operation. Finally, for whole home integration, Lutron has the Connect bridge allowing for voice activated light, shade and temperature control with the leading voice control devices such as Amazon, Google and Apple HomeKit. TDI distributes Mode Lighting, offering the eDIN Range of metal DIN rail enclosures designed to accept industry standard DIN rail modular devices. The range includes eight enclosure sizes to house from 13 to 72 modules. They feature a robust powder coated finish with removable and reversible hinged door with lock and supplied with Neutral and Earth screw terminal bars fitted and provide IP2XC protection. These enclosures provide a practical method for the housing of the eDIN range of components and other modular electrical and isolation devices, allowing the installer the opportunity to create an attractive and coordinated lighting control solution. Niko Home Control’s lighting system is designed to allow for a simple switching system whilst ensuring the homeowner has customisable settings that can be programmed to work at different times, controlled via a touchpanel or smart phone. Pleasant lighting means better ergonomics and better safety features too. Lighting can be used throughout a Niko home to improve safety and security. For example, lights can be used to simulate movement, turning on and off in sequence or at random to mimic life within to conceal that the home isn’t occupied.

Essential Install | Lighting & Lighting Control

Lighting can be used throughout a Niko home to improve safety and security

Fire safety

ln the unlikely event of a fire, lights can be triggered by an alarm to ensure that residents have a well-lit exit pathway and a safe, illuminated area outside to wait until emergency services arrive. What’s more, lighting effects can be used to signal a ringing doorbell if the doorbell has been turned off. Niko is distributed and supported in the UK by Moss Technical. Sun-Light Solutions, distributor of the amBX lighting control solution, continues to impress with a range of recent dealer installations in a mixture of market sectors. One notable installation, with Electric String, is intelligent lighting control into eight bedrooms of a residential care home for children and young people with additional needs. This included lighting control for a hydrotherapy room and an immersive sensory room, further adding to facilities of relaxation, downtime and inclusion. Circadian style lighting is provided for the bedrooms to aid with

natural daily routines offering pre-set lighting scenarios for cool white light in the mornings, warmer light in the day and colour selection at night. The amBX is combined into a full Crestron control system using its Crestron HTTP API integration module. Other integration modules are available for Lutron, Control4, Savant, DemoPad, AMX and Amazon Alexa voice control. Bespoke control APPs are also available for standalone projects. Sun-Light Solutions also markets the Digital Light Surface, which offers animated art from digital light and is built as a bespoke solution in differing shapes for differing applications be it corporate or residential. Sun-Light Solutions also offers very impressive British hand blown glass chandelier solutions, which can be designed for any space, to any height. The fittings can be of any colour temperature, RGB or RGBW and when used with the amBX lighting control system, differing coloured effects can be achieved.

Privacy penalty

Those who haven’t been living under a rock may be aware about the current discussions surrounding privacy. Whether it’s Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal, the fact Grindr was selling its user’s HIV status, or the upcoming changes to data protection laws in Europe; it’s impossible to go anywhere without hearing about your data and how it’s used. But is this the price users pay for convenience and access to free services? Over the last few days, Mark Zuckerberg has been grilled by the United States Congress about the company’s practices surrounding the handling of data. Despite the congressional hearing supposedly focusing on the misuse of data by Facebook, what was actually clear was that many of the members of congress didn’t know much about Facebook or the internet at all. As an example, Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah asked a question that every member of congress asking questions should have known – “So, how do you sustain a business model in which users don’t pay for your service?” Zuckerberg replied with an expression of disbelief, noting that Facebook ‘runs ads’. If they don’t understand how Facebook generates its income and what it does with its data, however – how is the average consumer? Facebook isn’t the only company that collects personal data, many other tech firms rely on a user’s data in order to fill their coffers. Both Google and Amazon now have always-listening devices in millions of homes around the world, allowing the companies to potentially target its customers with advertisements tailored to conversations they’ve had in the privacy of their own home. Despite Google and Amazon’s ability to listen to every uttered word, consumers are still more trusting of those

two behemoths than they are of Facebook. In a poll conducted by Re/Code and Survey Monkey, 56% trusted Facebook the least with their data, compared to 5% who named Google. Is that entirely fair? Facebook has a history of being too trusting. Developers have received a lot of information about those who use its apps. This was designed to allow users to automatically import all their information into an app in a single click, but in essence it gave third-parties a lot more information than the user was aware of. Facebook’s trust was further betrayed when certain developers decided to sell that data to other firms who used the information for other purposes. Despite concerns around privacy, users seem more willing than ever to give up their details as long as they feel like they’re getting something in return. Google ranked well below Facebook in the poll, and it’s definitely not because it’s less invasive than the social network. There are benefits to Google, however. It’s able to suggest news results based on what people have been searching, and even keep track of the places you regularly visit to notify you of journey times. In order to do so though, and successfully, it requires a lot of information. Try going to myactivity.google.com to find out just how much. Whether a user cares about their data being shared or not, it’s only fair that companies are transparent about what happens to that data, and what is being collected. It’s important that this information is clear and concise, and that users are plainly told what’s going on. That way there will be a lot more trust between these tech giants and the consumers that use them. As Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana told Zuckerberg during the congressional hearing “your user agreement sucks.”

Essential Install | Touchscreens

Touching base

Touchscreens have always been a key component of a smart home, and as the main interaction point they define the user experience of the entire system. Many new solutions are being brought into the spotlight, with some rather novel applications. EI investigates.

Crestron’s new touchscreens have super fast processors

Crestron says its touchscreen offers an ideal user interface for controlling all technology in the home, boardroom, classroom, courtroom, or command centre. For controlling audio, video, lighting, shades, HVAC, security and other systems, Crestron touchscreens are fully customisable with easy to use controls and icons, true feedback and real-time status display, full motion video windows, and a full featured media player for an enhanced multiroom entertainment experience. Crestron says its TSW touchscreens have been designed with an extremely fast and more responsive new processor, giving an even better user experience. Only new Crestron TSWs are able to run the full Sonos application and interface right on the touchscreen as part of an integrated whole home audio system. And the maker says this is just the start – the new generation of TSW touchscreens are designed to deliver even more incredible applications for the luxury home market. To support high quality video intercom experiences between residents in different rooms and buildings,

models are available with built-in cameras and microphones, the screen border now features backlit capacitive buttons that illuminate according to user needs, resulting in a sleeker look and more intuitive user navigation.

Essential Install | Touchscreens

The new MirrorTouch by AGATH has 40 touch points

Crestron has been involved with some very novel touchscreens including one that specifically opened the door of a dog kennel, so the dog could roam at its leisure. Other memorable ones include the control of a robotic arm, which pushed a bottle of champagne through the wall of the fridge, popped the cork and poured two glasses, and the control of a car ferris wheel so that the owner could choose his favourite car easily. Are touchscreens the future? Will they ultimately replace remotes and switches? Crestron is dubious and offers a selection of both. Crestron’s Emily McKay says, “Consumers are looking for technology that is beautiful. By using touchscreens and simple keypads, you can eliminate wall clutter and ‘remote overload’ and the technology can be art itself. Everything is hidden behind the scenes leaving you with subtle controls that are intuitive and visually appealing. With that being said, consumers also like the tactile nature of a remote, and the speed of pressing physical buttons. Crestron is all about versatility and that is why we offer both touchscreens and remotes, our sleek new remotes (HR-310 and TSR-310) are stylish as well as functional, offering clients the best of both worlds.” Habitech distributes SimpleControl, a sophisticated app-based control system for home theatre and home automation that uses Wi-Fi to control thousands of devices like TVs, cable/satellite boxes, receivers, Blu-ray players, lights and thermostats. SimpleControl works on familiar and ubiquitous iOS tablets, mobilising IP control functionality that already exists. It recognises that virtually every new

home entertainment device from smart TV screens and AV receivers, to light bulbs and controllers, heating systems and multi room audio setups has an IP identity and connects over Wi-Fi to the cloud via a control app. Simple Control ties them all together. The world’s largest IP, serial and IR libraries provide preloaded and predesigned graphics, protocols and control codes for tens of thousands of devices, meaning that most smart products are already compatible. And because it marks a shift in the entire control culture from a rigid prescriptive model to a more liberal IoT cosmos, integrators can manage client systems remotely, saving cost while sustaining the essential service elements of client relationships. New to SimpleControl is the SC5 platform for iPad, which features ‘action panels’ for control over individual devices, a new home bar feature for easy device shortcuts and ‘dashboard’ screens for a global view of the entire control space. Keyboard navigation makes search easy and multitask with dual views of cameras and live TV through a neat P-I-P mode is also available. CAVD distribute AGATH mirror TVs and with the introduction of the new MirrorTouch by AGATH, the range for AGATH architectural televisions has been taken to a whole new level. With a combination of a touchpanel, an AGATH television and a luxurious mirror designed to interact with home automation systems, the MirrorTouch impresses. The new screen is available in any screen size from AGATH at 2K or 4K resolution, and is compatible with home automation module interface systems such as Crestron and Control 4.

HDL’s screens boast a customisable backlight

AWE offers the URC TDC-7100 tabletop controller

AGATH’s MirrorTouch can be mounted in-wall or on-wall, creating a very attractive addition to an interior. The device is IP65 rated too which means it’s ideal for bathroom or kitchen applications. Bespoke glass sizes can be applied right up to 3m x 2m using the majority of AGATH’s glass technology options. There are 40 touch points across the surface that can register input from more than one user simultaneously, with a quick start up response and high accuracy. Director of custom install company ECSAV, Gavin Codd offers his opinion on the RTI touchscreen, having recently completed an install in his own home. “I used Lutron homeworks for my lighting control, RTI & Alexa for my control system, Doorbird for my entry phone and Sonos for music. I discovered that the RTI touchscreen, which is also the video display for the doorbird, was only audible (when a visitor called) in the room in which it was located. But using the power of RTI, I managed to integrate the Sonos players in the house, so when a visitor called it played a ding dong sound at a set level on all the Sonos players in the house. I also set it so that it only rang between daytime hours and ensured it did not disturb the children with the Sonos players in their rooms.” HDL’s range of programmable and touchscreen keypads offer intelligent, stylish and programmable control for every install budget. Available from Alltrade, the touchscreens boast flexible control and style, HDL’s

user interfaces manage energy consumption, HVAC, lighting and security in a minimalist, user friendly and affordable package. Many of the Intelligent keypad products fit directly into a 1G lighting switch pattress to simplify installation. The keypads offer dimming and scene, HVAC and blind control, as well as offering zoneby-zone room thermostat, all in the same device. This negates the need for an additional device on the wall, creating a cleaner and more aesthetic look in the property. The HDL range spans from simple intelligent keypads with customisable buttons to HDL’s sophisticated touchscreen Enviro Panel. The Enviro Panel is as eye catching as it is practical. The multi touch capacitive display ensures excellent readability in low light environments. The screen also boasts a customisable backlight capable of automatic activation. When the energy efficient screen is not in use, a sleep mode will activate, awakening only when a user approaches. This fully customisable colour screen can be adjusted to suit any style or decoration. Building on the success across its CI division, Alltrade has actually just opened two new Trade Counters in Berkshire and Greater Manchester. As with all of Alltrade’s Trade Counters, the new branches stock a range of Alltrade’s products and have been fitted with a cuttingedge, fully interactive installer training rooms. Available exclusively through AWE, the URC TDC7100 tabletop controller and the TKP-7600 in-wall touchscreen focus on performance, design and efficiency. The TDC-7100 tabletop controller and TKP-7600 inwall touchscreen provide whole-house control of entertainment and smart home products. It features a 7in colour touchscreen, built-in camera, microphone and AV intercom, making it well suited for door integration, room to room and whole-house communication. The tabletop controller includes an integrated charging base which means that this product is perfectly suited for installation in the kitchen, bedroom or family room. In addition to control for entertainment, lighting, thermostats, blinds and security, the two products deliver faster-than-ever speed, enhanced graphics and sensor-

based wake-up function. With network cameras, the TDC7100 and TKP-7600 can display live video for surveillance. Both offer visual status feedback from URC devices and third-party products. Total Control 2.0 from URC can be connected seamlessly to the TDC-7100 and TKP-7600. The integration of Alexa-enabled devices with URC Total Control allows homeowners to utilise voice commands to complete programmed macros without the need for a button press. Available via RGB Communications, Savant has recently launched two touchscreens, the in-wall or free-standing, 5.5in and 8in. They not only provide dedicated control of all the usual services throughout a home, they both have high-resolution graphics, PoE connectivity, presence sensors, a built-in microphone & speaker and the larger touchscreens can be mounted in portrait or landscape orientation. They are suitable for new installations and high traffic areas where quick and easy control is a must. Alongside the touchscreens and iOS or Android control, they have the unique ‘Savant Pro’ Remote. This attractively designed, ergonomic remote provides control of all the entertainment, lighting, and blinds, from a sleek device. The high-resolution touchscreen only shows the controls needed at the time, eliminating the extra, unnecessary buttons. Individual user profiles give everyone in the family their own personnel remote, with everything they love a tap or voice command away. The biggest challenge with designing the layout of a touchscreen is to how to make it truly user friendly. The most common mistake is when programmers over complicate the touchscreen in such a way that the user finds it impossible to operate and quickly gives up. Using the Savant App on touchscreens and mobile devices delivers simple, easy to use, good looking screens which are consistent throughout the home or homes says the maker. Finally, EI spoke to Gavin Williams, marketing manager at Hamilton Litestat, to hear about the company’s offerings and to discuss the future of control. “The touchscreen controller is becoming the nerve centre of the home, controlling all electrical services, including heating, ventilation and lighting,” says Gavin. “However, issues can arise if adding an extension to a property where the homeowner would like this integrated with the existing electrics. Alternatively, they may just want to add lighting or audio control.”

Hamilton Litestat offers two types of touchscreen control plates suited for these circumstances. The Linea-Vetro CFX Glass Touch Controller for lighting or audio control uses the same technology as smart phones in an eye-catching design. Available in black and white, it has eight capacitive touch controls with LED back-lit panels: four for preprogrammed selections and four for level control. “Meanwhile, our resistive touchscreens allow for the dual management of Hamilton’s smart lighting control and audio systems,” continues Gavin. “The controller has a resistive touchscreen set within a metal frame that’s available in many Hamilton designer styles and finishes, including the popular Hartland CFX and Sheer CFX collections, for a coordinated look with other wiring accessories. Installers can be reluctant to install lighting control as they believe programming knowledge is required, but Hamilton’s smart lighting and audio control are extremely simple to install, while the touchscreen controller is pre-loaded with software for complete ease of use. Yet today’s ‘ultimate touchscreen’ is the smart phone, and Hamilton’s controllers can be linked to an iOS/Android app, so they can also be controlled by smart phone for ease and convenience.” He concludes, “Most of our daily activities are governed by the swipe of a finger. The rising trend for voice control has made the headlines, but I think that there will still always be a place for physical control plates and touchscreens provide the easiest, one-swipe option.”

The rise of the community cinema

As the price of cinema tickets continues to skyrocket, not to mention the price of the popcorn, the Friday night film date is quickly becoming less frequent. Epson’s Pro Displays business manager, Charlotte Hone, talks through the latest trend of the DIY community cinema. The days of a trip to the local cinema being a cheap and cheerful night out are long gone, having been replaced by an experience that many people feel has become excessively expensive. According to a study by the BFI, the average price of a cinema ticket in the UK increased from £4.87 in 2006 to £7.17 in 2015 – and in major cities such as London, a single adult ticket can easily cost close to £20. The cost of taking a family of four to see a film, including tickets, drinks and popcorn, can now break the £100 barrier, highlighting just how expensive the activity has become.

Excessively expensive

The issue is being compounded further by television packages such as those offered by Sky, as well as online services like Netflix and Amazon. The cost of a monthly subscription can be cheaper than a single cinema ticket and thus offer much better value for money. These factors are combining to relegate the cinema visit from being a fan favourite to an occasional treat. Instead, people are seeking an alternative cinema experience that provides the same quality viewing experience without the expensive price tag.

Quality viewing

What’s more, advances in technology means that just because viewers are watching a film locally in an informal set-up, the viewing quality doesn’t need to be compromised. In fact, modern projectors are now so advanced that communities can enjoy very similar image quality as they do in cinemas. It is also an experience that can be shared and enjoyed by whole neighbourhoods. Community cinemas give villages the chance to get lots of people together for a casual, family-friendly event; whether that be a cosy indoor movie night during the winter or open-air screenings throughout the summer. Tring Cinema is one such perfect example; a pop-up community cinema for Tring and the surrounding villages, it is run and organised by local members of the community. Tring Cinema received financial support from local businesses, which enabled it to build a 2.5m x 5m screen in a village hall in the centre of Tring. The group then selected a top-of-the-range Epson projector, offering high definition images that could be shown in a variety of light levels and connects to various high definition devices, to deliver a full cinematic experience. Such initiatives are quickly becoming commonplace across the UK, with more and more people keen to take part in a shared movie experience that doesn’t disappoint.

Showtime

Rise of the pop-up cinema

This alternative is increasingly taking shape in the form of community cinemas, film clubs and societies running their own movie screenings. We’ve all heard of (and may have seen) cinema screens popping up on rooftops and racecourses on fairly large scales, and as a by-product of that, groups have started dusting off their camping chairs and establishing cinemas of their own in whatever location takes their fancy. From schools and village halls to cricket clubs, parks, and even back gardens, no space is exempt from being turned into a quirky home-grown cinema that local residents can enjoy at their leisure – especially when armed with a projector and a popcorn machine. Not only does it bring the community together in its shared cinema experience, but it can save it money too. A trip to the village hall is likely to be far cheaper than travelling into town to visit the closest multiplex. It’s also more convenient, as the venues are usually local and just a walk away; meaning no reason to bundle everyone into the car for a matinee and you can happily have a drink with your evening film, as it’s just a short walk home.

So, how can you get your community get involved in this movement and create a mini-cinema of your own? The first step is to put your team together. This should include a range of people with different skills that can cover tasks such as bookings, equipment, finance and marketing. When this team is in place, you can start working out the financials to consider whether a fundraiser or sponsored event is needed to raise some money. Remember that, along with venue and equipment hire, license and insurance costs also need to be factored in – although these can be offset by ticket, food and drink sales once you’re up and running. Of course, no community cinema will be able to function without the right equipment. Films can be screened using a basic kit, commonly comprising of a DVD or Blu-ray player, a projector, a screen and a sound system. Larger venues may require slightly higher quality equipment to achieve greater clarity of sound and vision, but today’s level of projector technology is more than capable of meeting these demands. In some cases, new equipment can be sourced through local companies or large enterprises, and cinemas that have been running for six months can choose to apply to the BFI Neighbourhood Cinema Equipment Fund. Next comes the fun part: choosing your first film and promoting the screening throughout your local community. There are many ways you can market your screening and it doesn’t have to drain your budget. Social media, for example, is a free and effective way of getting your message out, as are local newsletters, notice boards and leaflets. Whether it’s to watch an iconic cult classic, a modern blockbuster or even the next big sporting event, all that’s left is to sit back, relax and enjoy the community cinema experience!

Cinema Tools: Cinema design made easy

In the December issue of Essential Install, this column introduced Cinema Tools, a free and open online resource that allows you to quickly perform the most important cinema design tasks, to ensure that you can deliver a great cinema experience. Now, Neil Davidson expands on how to make the most from its features. In March, the Cinema Tools, website www.cinema-tools. com, was launched as an open beta, and I wanted to highlight just how much information you can get from our set of launch calculators.

Projector Location Calculator

The Projector Location Calculator is a powerful tool to evaluate exactly where you can install the projector and still fit the image on the screen. Page 1 shows the native image size that will be created by the projector. This is important as more models come to market that are not 1.78 native, such as the 2.37 Barco CinemaScope projectors or the 1.89 Sony projectors. Page 2 shows the full range of lens shift and any lens off-set. The lens shift is shown as a diamond shape to reflect that you increase the range of horizontal lens shift as you decrease the range of vertical lens shift. Page 3 show the minimum and maximum throw distance and range for the selected lens. It is important to remember that throw is given in terms of the native image size which is why that is clearly presented earlier in the report. Page 4 shows a chart of how the brightness of the output changes as you move through the lens throw range. It is often not understood that projector brightness is typically quoted at the mid-point of the lens throw and that if you go closer you get more brightness and further away, less brightness. This difference can be as much as 20% +- brightness, which can be critical in these challenging days of HDR.

Viewing Angles Calculator

The Viewing Angles Calculator is used to quickly determine the ideal seating distance for the given screen size and aspect, and to quickly check the horizontal and vertical viewing angles and sight lines for up to four rows of seating. Page 1 shows, with a top down view, the minimum, recommended and maximum seating distances from the screen along with the horizontal viewing angles. These are all also summarised in the data table. Page 2 shows, with a side view, the vertical viewing angles, the relative heights of the screen and viewers and the sight lines. Again, this is summarised in the data table. To be able to quickly check sight lines is an invaluable benefit of this calculator.

Beam Size Calculator

The Beam Size Calculator enables a quick evaluation of the projector light beam size at up to four separate locations. This is extremely useful to verify the required size of port holes or folding mirrors that will be in the light path. Page 1 details the width of the beam at the specified points. Page 2 details the height of the beam at the specified points.

Amplifier Power Calculator

The Amplifier Power Calculator is a powerful tool to evaluate how powerful an amplifier will be needed to achieve the target SPL for the given speaker parameters. The data entry page for this calculator is designed to try and ensure that the speaker data in particular is handled correctly given all of the tricks that manufacturers can use to make their specifications look more impressive. Page 1 shows the RMS (steady state) SPL that can be achieved along with the Peak SPL as the distance from the speaker increases. It is always important to remember that the often quoted 105dB target is a Peak number. We understand that there is always interest in training that can support the tools and products that we offer and I am excited that we are going to be offering a great programme over the next few months starting with Cinema Expert presents...Projector Fundamentals. In this class, we have decided to really focus on the practical side of understanding how to work with projection, understanding throw ratios lens shift and keystone the impact of these on the image. Dates and locations should be available as you read this. Article and contents by Neil Davidson. EssentialREVIEW Focal 300 ICW 8

Focus on Focal In a brand-new feature in Essential Install, respected AV reviewer Richard Stevenson puts some top CI products through their paces. This month he takes a look at the Focal 300 ICW 8, the company’s recently launched 8in coaxial in-wall/in-ceiling installation loudspeaker.

Focal might not be a brand that immediately springs to mind when you consider install speakers. Yet the company has now brought much of its well-regarded residential and automotive loudspeaker tech to the in-wall and in-ceiling market. The 300 Series is a threestrong line-up of two-way coaxial install loudspeakers featuring an inverted dome magnesium alloy tweeter and Focal’s distinctive Flax bass/mid cone. The Flax cone was first rolled out on Focal’s Aria series domestic loudspeakers and subsequently to many of the brand’s premium automotive designs to much acclaim. The natural fibres are more ecofriendlier than plastics and polymers and said to result in a very light, rigid cone with good natural damping. Grilles off, the cone’s distinctive texture and colour certainly look the part too. The premium feel runs throughout the flagship ICW 8 model on test. Fitted with an 8in Flax driver, the coaxially mounted tweeter is fixed, perpendicular direction, but does allow limited rotation to align logos. There is a +3dB / 0dB / -3dB switch for trimming HF output on the rear of the driver assembly.

24/04/2018 14:33

Mounting

The 300 ICW8 has a unique, tool-free fitting system that splits the speaker from a mounting frame. The latter has four large, sprung loaded and locking ABS clamps. These accommodate mounting on substrates from 9mm plasterboard up to more than the 26mm MDF baffle of our test wall. Once installed, the clamps act as four-point bayonet fitting for the driver, which simply pushes in and quarter turns to lock into place. It is a very neat and very effective mounting system. It’s much quicker to install and remove than the traditional screw-turn lugs and the wide-bodied clamps are potentially less damaging to fragile substrates. Once installed, the clamps are no wider than lugs so should not cause issues fitting fire hoods. Better still, removing and replacing the speaker assembly takes a couple of seconds, affording easy access to the HF trim switch to tune the system. The 300 ICW 8 requires at least 13cm behind the mounting surface. The sprung terminals are recessed into the rear panel, so the mounting depth will also need to accommodate the thickness of the speaker cable. With a mounting depth for clearance approaching 14cm then, the ICW 8 is on the deep side for an 8in install speaker. All models in the range are supplied with two magnetic, frameless grilles, one circular and one square, and a clear magnetic paint shield. The grilles are nicely made, well finished in white and incorporate a removable cloth screen if you want to see the Flax driver and metallic tweeter through the mesh. The frame sports 12 strong magnets and no amount of thumping the wall or 100dB+ SPLs were going to shift the grilles once installed.

The on-axis measurement for the Focal 300 ICW 8

Installation

In the box, the first piece of information you are greeted with is a white circular card, printed with instructions on how to use the locking clamps. Also printed on the card is a QR code. One might assume (well, one did assume…) that the card is the cut-out template and the QR code takes you to further mounting instructions.

Performance The 300 ICW 8 clearly leverages Focal’s well respected audiophile credentials. This speaker produced one of the flattest 30 degree off-axis responses I have measured from a large, coaxial install speaker. The onaxis measurement (pictured) shows a mild HF lift but, given the tweeter pod is fixed, the listening position is almost certainly going to be off axis. If not, setting the HF trim to -3dB will smooth out the response. LF reaches down to around 50Hz (-6dB) in a typical sealed/infinite baffle install such as a ceiling with floor above. While that will vary depending on the installation, such an extended LF response means you can keep the subwoofer crossover to 60Hz, reducing the sub’s perceived directionality. Subjectively, as a stereo pair mounted in-wall, the 300 ICW 8s sound outstanding. Quite unlike a typical in-ceiling speaker sound, they deliver rich tones and musical articulation more akin to good domestic cabinet loudspeakers. A single unit comfortably hits 100dB SPL (@1m) with music without sounding strained, and both speakers on test survived a week of rock and hip-hop abuse without so much as a rattle. Aside from a note about the mounting depth and gripe about the dubious ‘non-template’, Focal’s 300 ICW 8 is an exceptional premium installation speaker. The clamping frame system is inspired, the speaker’s performance outstanding and its fit, finish and build quality is beyond reproach throughout.

Sadly, the QR code takes you to a dead link for the domestic Aria 900 loudspeakers and the circular card is just for information. It’s not the template. An innocuous beige template card is packed deep in the box and is 15mm larger in diameter than the instruction card. That of course lead to cutting the mounting holes twice. Incorporating a circular ‘information’ card that is not the template frankly beggars belief and I expect I am not the first installer to make that error. Thankfully, once the cut-out holes had been enlarged to the real template size, fitting the 300 ICW 8 is unrivalled in its speed and simplicity. The clamping system is robust and being able to pop out the speaker in seconds will save plenty of time during snagging and fine tuning. Focal, focal.com

Essential Install | Smart Thinking

Why manufacturers must help electricians to see the light Here, Steve Adams, field applications engineer and Lutron brand manager at Armour Home explains why installers should get smart to lighting control. The ongoing rise in technology, including recent strides in AI-powered devices such as Amazon Echo and Google Home, has acted as a catalyst for more consumers wanting to innovate their homes. This is particularly pertinent across the younger generations, with US-based Wakefield Research revealing that 86% of millennials are willing to pay more for a home or rental property incorporating smart technology. The main reason for consumers selecting smart home products is because they are so convenient and can be controlled through simple apps, via mobiles and tablets, or on keypads. Generally, smart technology also looks more attractive, with fewer wires and boxes, whilst the products are getting smaller, sleeker and more sophisticated, meaning they fit into any home very easily. When it comes to integrated audio systems or intelligent lighting solutions, there is a perception among electricians that products of this nature are complicated to install, leading to a reluctance to add them to their portfolios. However, I don’t think this is the case, and as a result, I believe many installers are missing out on vital revenue. Armour Home is an official distributor of Lutron, the US-based company that has created many smart lighting products for both residential and commercial properties, designed to provide more control, reduce energy costs and enhance comfort. Of course, some smart installations are more intricate than others, however Lutron does its best to take that complexity away. For instance, typically electricians may be tasked with making each localised switch

operate efficiently through very tricky wiring. However, with Lutron, you link all the switches and circuits back to a centralised enclosure that contains a processor (the brain of the operation!), which then communicates with each keypad within the building. Therefore, it is important that electricians don’t assume the more hightech the product, the more difficult the install – it is often the other way round. I believe manufacturers have a commitment to electricians to debunk this myth by offering additional support before and during the installation phase. First of all, we offer a three day certification course for Lutron products, which is readily available to willing participants. Secondly, we are also offering to work closely with electricians onsite to help install and programme any Lutron system they have sold. Electricians have the opportunity to establish themselves as a smart home advocate, and to create an extremely healthy pipeline of business from tech-savvy consumers. In fact, we have ensured that certain Lutron products fully integrate with our multi-room audio solution Systemline 7, so electricians can upsell to homeowners who wish to control their lighting and audio from the same platform. We are attempting to give electricians the confidence to go and communicate with their customers regarding the latest market-leading smart-home products, without getting bogged down by the technical detail. There is a fantastic opportunity for them to take advantage of the rise in smart technology to not only supplement their income, but to shape their portfolio of products for the future. Essential Install | Alliances

Championing high-quality Hi-Fi

The Clarity Alliance is the UK Hi-Fi industry’s trade association, formed of retailers, installers, manufacturers, distributors and the media, who are all working to bring high quality home entertainment to consumers. Governance comes via a 10 strong board of directors, elected each year for their expertise to help shape and drive the policies of the association. Phil Hansen elaborates. Membership is open to everyone to whom the prosperity of the industry matters. All members have equal status – whether they make one valve amplifier a year or are a multi-national company with thousands of employees; whether they run an online Hi-Fi store or a chain of high-street shops; whether they publish a blog from their dining room table or print 50,000 magazines each month. Our objective is simple: To get more people into more of our stores, so that they can experience just what drives our collective passion for high quality audio. There are literally hundreds of trade associations in the UK, some you’ve heard of, like the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and some you probably don’t know, such as the Adhesive Tape Manufacturers Association. They’ve all got one thing in common and that is to look after the interests of their members and industry. And so it is with Clarity – we exist to help the industry prosper and we, like the other bodies, do this in a number of ways. We bring like-minded people together in a forum where ideas can be shared and intelligence pooled to work through common issues and provide solutions that will aid many members. This could be the provision of training, or information on emerging technology and impending legislation. The Clarity Conference, the UK’s only annual Hi-Fi conference, takes place every February and includes presentations on topics of interest to the industry, with guest speakers from brands such as Google, GfK, BPI and Dolby.

We provide a number of financial benefits that significantly aid members’ businesses. For example, we offer specialist insurance services developed for Hi-Fi retailers. We give each Clarity retail member complimentary membership of Retra, providing access to its benefits, including ultra-low rate credit card processing fees, consumer finance packages and extended warranties. We work closely with the manufacturers and distributors to facilitate an exclusive discount each month for Clarity retail members. And with all the financial benefits available it is more than possible to save the cost of membership and ease the burden of running a retail business. We act as a promotional body on behalf of the members. Our website includes a comprehensive dealer locator which is promoted via a Google AdWords campaign, targeting those people searching for Hi-Fi shops in the UK, connecting them with their nearest Clarity member retailer within just a couple of taps of the finger. A trade association should recognise the individual efforts of the members of the industry. We organise the annual Best of Show awards at the Bristol Show and each year present an Honorary Fellowship award, recognising an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the UK Hi-Fi industry. This award is now in its fifth year and has been presented to John Dawson, founder of Arcam; respected journalist Paul Messenger; Sony’s Eric Kingdon; Paul Stephenson from Naim and, most recently, the Audio T group. With the resurgence in vinyl and audio becoming ‘cool’ again, Hi-Fi’s future looks bright. By being part of The Clarity Alliance, your experience can contribute towards the specialist audio industry prospering well into the future. Clarity Alliance 020 8150 6741, clarityalliance.co.uk

Opulent Offerings Of AV Automation The XF83 is arguably the star of this new line-up

Sony debuts three new 4K HDR TVs Sony has announced three new additions to its 4K HDR TV line-up. The new models include the XF75, XF70 and XF83, and will sit below the A8F OLED, XF90 and XF85, which have already been announced. The XF83 is arguably the star of this new line-up, as it will slot into Sony’s high-end TV line-up, which includes the aforementioned models. That’s because it boasts the company’s 4K HDR Processor X1, which is identical to the one offered in the XF85. Sony says that this processor should ensure rich colours and a clean picture, and it’s even capable of upscaling 1080p images to 4K. Next down in the new line-up is the XF75, which may lack the X1 processor, but does still boast Sony’s 4K X-Reality PRO technology. This again upscales 1080p content to 4K and promises to deliver sharp imagery that is refined in real-time. After the XF75 is the slightly more affordable XF70, this model offers 4K HDR in four screen sizes – 43, 49, 55, and 65in. It features the same X-Reality PRO technology, and its stand design is able to keep cables from set-top boxes or Blu-ray players out of sight. The Sony XF83, XF70 and XF75 series 4K HDR TVs will be available this spring, with the XF83 available in 60 to 70in. Sony, sony.co.uk

The module allows for control/ feedback over input switching, volume and play controls

New module for URC Total Control 2.0 Chowmain has released a free two-way VSSL A.6 module for URC Total Control 2.0. The development has been sponsored by VSSL and has been certified by URC. VSSL produces matrixed amplifiers that have embedded streaming technologies built in that allows for independent streams of Google Cast, Apple Airplay and Spotify Connect. What this means is that each room can now listen to its own music streamed from iPhones, iPads, Android devices or even initiated by Google Home. On top of streaming, the amplifier also provides matrixed analogue inputs which can be connected to various sources for distribution around the home and bus line outputs which can be connected to other amplifiers/receivers. “VSSL offers a unique solution to streaming audio using Airplay/Google Cast/Spotify Connect technology that is already widely accepted and adopted by consumers. VSSL combined with Total Control 2.0 will provide consumers with a simple to use premium user experience like nothing else on the market,” says Dan Allen of VSSL. The new BluOS Controller desktop app has improved browsing functions

New desktop app for BluOS Lenbrook International, developer of the BluOS wireless high-res audio streaming platform, has announced the release of the new BluOS Controller desktop app. Described as a powerful new control interface for macOS and Windows, the BluOS Controller has been redesigned and refined with a fresh, modern look and features that streamline music controls across a desktop or mobile device. The company wanted to create a more seamless and fluid experience to go with the high-quality music delivery platform. Highlights include faster access to the Navigation Drawer where users can browse local music libraries, streaming music services and playlists all in one place. The Player Drawer itself has been redesigned to prioritise the most important controls and multi-room grouping buttons and the simplified browse model makes searching for albums, artists, and songs easier. Andrew Haines, BluOS product manager, says, “The new BluOS Controller is the future of the desktop experience with its incredible design and amazing new features, all engineered to mirror the mobile app that our customers love. Our goal is to always engineer our products, platforms, and applications together, so we are able to create a seamless user experience across all devices—no matter how you like to listen.” With the desktop app, the BluOS experience now has a cleaner look where controls are designed to be clearer, smarter and easier to understand, while the intuitiveness of the Navigation and Player drawers lets users focus on their music without comprising functionality. The updated search design makes browsing and finding music easier too. Users can type in the name of an artist, song, or album, and have the search results auto-populated and displayed in real-time. JVC unveils 4K HDR projector

The projector uses newlydeveloped TRP DMD technology to deliver 4K images

JVC already has a 4K HDR projector in its line-up, but it uses D-ILA technology, which is a sort of hybrid between LCD and DLP. Now, the company has launched a brand-new model in the form of the LX-UH1, and it uses DLP technology. It features a compact design and wide lens shift to suit a broad range of home installations. One of the first ‘mainstream’ brands to really deliver serious products into the home cinema market, JVC is looking to build on its already considerable popularity in the sector with this new beamer and the company says this 4K HDR DLP projector is looking to extend the brand’s reputation for strong image quality to a wider audience of home theatre enthusiasts. The new JVC LX-UH1 is a 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) projector that uses newly-developed TRP DMD technology to deliver 4K images, and offers HDR support, 2,000 lumens, Dynamic Contrast Ratio of 100,000:1, with a wide vertical and horizontal lens shift. JVC says the new 0.47in TRP digital micromirror device (DMD) is a 4K UHD DLP chipset that, in combination with the LX-UH1’s high-quality optical system, delivers crisp 4K (3840 x 2160) video. An RGBRGB colour wheel completes the imaging set up for this new machine. The projector includes two HDMI inputs, an RS232C interface and a 12-volt screen trigger output. To accommodate a wide range of installations, the LX-UH1 provides a ±60% vertical lens shift and ±23% horizontal lens shift. In combination with the projector’s 1.6x wide zoom lens, this enhanced versatility helps to make installation much easier. JVC tells EI that distribution will be taken care of by Habitech and Invision UK for the UK market. There are whispers that it might make an appearance at the EI Live! show too. The new speakers fit perfectly into IKEA furniture

IKEA launches Bluetooth speaker IKEA has already showcased its desire to get back into the AV market, with the company announcing a partnership with Sonos late last year, but it’s now finally ready to launch a new product; the IKEA Eneby Bluetooth speaker. This is not the first time IKEA has attempted to capitalise on the AV industry, with its Uppleva TV offering a unique experience for those who want to perfectly pair a TV with a TV stand, an odd product to say the least. Thankfully, this time around it looks like IKEA’s foray into the AV market should be a little more successful. That’s because the Eneby looks like a well-designed Bluetooth speaker, and it boasts a bunch of must-have features for this category; things such as the ability to adjust the bass and treble, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. This is likely to be the first product in what will become an onslaught of products from IKEA in the AV industry. The Eneby does not look like it’s a product of its partnership with Sonos, and it looks like this is more of a standalone effort. That’s evident in the price, with this Bluetooth speaker easily beating out many that are currently on the market. The smaller model measures 20cm by 20cm and costs £45, while the larger Eneby is 30cm by 30cm and costs £80. No matter what size consumers purchase, however, both speakers have been designed to fit alongside, and inside, IKEA furniture. The Swedish firm’s KALLAX storage solution is a mainstay in homes all around the world, which is why Eneby has been designed to perfectly fit them. Unfortunately, the only thing particularly special about the Eneby is the design. It fits in IKEA furniture, it’s incredibly intuitive, while still being minimal. There’s nothing groundbreaking, and things like Alexa or Google Assistant support are also lacking, leading EI to question whether it is truly smart. IKEA, ikea.com

Legrand introduces Nuvo P400 tabletop speaker The tabletop speaker allows home audio to be extended to other rooms

Legrand has launched its first all-in-one stereo tabletop speaker, the Nuvo P400. Featuring a 2.1 system with a 5¼in subwoofer, two midrange drivers, and two tweeters, the Nuvo P400 provides full, high-fidelity stereo reproduction from a single compact unit. As part of Legrand’s Nuvo range of whole home audio systems, the tabletop speaker means home audio can be easily extended to other rooms. What’s more, the speaker is able to stay perfectly in sync with other zones simultaneously playing the same song. The unit provides instant access to music from connected devices and popular online streaming services such as Spotify, Napster and Deezer. The tabletop speaker is controlled via the Nuvo Player app (available for free from iTunes and Google Play) and optional in-wall keypads with capacitive touch controls on the device to provide play, pause, volume, mute and track navigation. The unit can deliver streaming audio via a wired or wireless connection through Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Line Input. Richard Hayward, lead marketing manager for Legrand UK and Ireland’s Wiring Devices business, comments, “Professional audio quality need not be confined to recording studios, and the Nuvo Player Portfolio, complete with the new P400 speaker, represents an easy to install home audio system that allows high quality audio to be effortlessly and discretely carried throughout any home. The Nuvo P400 tabletop speaker offers ultimate control, making it easier than ever before for users to listen to music whenever and wherever they want.” Legrand 0345 605 4333, legrand.co.uk
