A fine time at Farnborough Daniel J Sait, Editor-in-Chief
Only one subject to open with this month and that is the fact that the re-imagined, re-animated and really fantastic EI Live! 2019 sponsored by CYP is heading your way very soon. In fact, the show takes place April 30 - May 1 at its new home of the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. Home to the world’s oldest and largest commercial aviation trad show, this venue has been planning its own exhibition space for several years and EI Live! is lucky to be one of the first shows to make this futuristic and striking new venue its home. Good looks is not the only thing the new venue has going for it; location and ease of access are two big plus points. We did not want to lose the great access offered by the old venue, so this commercial vehicle friendly site offers the same opportunity to spend all day at the show, or whatever time you have, with ease and at no cost. Driving to the site is also easy, with the venue located just off the A325, accessible from the M3 (J4) and A31. Satnav users should
dial in GU14 6AZ, which will take you to the Queen’s Roundabout, from there follow signs for event car parking. The venue is also located within easy reach of four train stations: Farnborough Main, Farnborough North, North Camp and Aldershot. If you are feeling very flash, you can of course arrive by air as the venue has its own airport, one of Europe’s leading business airports, so private business jet travel is available for visitors to the venue. So, once you are at the show, having registered at the official website at www.eiliveshow.com, what can you expect? Well of course we have all the usual domestic AV and automation delights the show is known for. This year looks to be a particularly good year for home cinema with all the major players offering top quality demo of their kit including a stone-cold world exclusive in a full demo of an IMAX approved home cinema set up. If you are interested in home cinema at all, you simply have to be at the show this year. Organisers have also worked hard in encouraging exhibitors to offer exclusive offers and deals only available by attending the show. Want to save some money? Then come along to the show. You can check out many of the special deals on offer in our full preview of the show in this very issue. The show this year also offers an insight into the world of commercial projects, with a huge presence from Barco with its awesome European tour truck making a stop at the show to wow people with the many commercial focused projection opportunities that the market offers. There are also training opportunities on offer to either increase your footprint in the commercial sector or make your first moves into the area. Learning is a big theme of the show as always. Get HDBaseT certified courtesy of Bluestream or learn more about the opportunities in the commercial sector from a specially created course presented by Habitech. Lastly do not forget the Smart Building Awards which take place at the Village Hotel, close to the venue, on the first evening of the show. Tickets can purchased from the awards site (smartbuildingawards.com). Top night in prospect with lots of fine food and drink, good company and the awards themselves of course. See you all at Farnborough!

Amazon’s Ring now calls on OneAV
OneAV is now distributing the Amazon Ring range of products
Since Amazon acquired Ring back in March 2018 for $1 billion, the retailer has concentrated on pushing the range of smart products on its own platform. That means it hasn’t had much of a presence in front of installers, but that’s now set to change, with OneAV picking up distribution for Ring’s range of products in the UK. Ring’s most famous product is its smart doorbell, which is offered in a variety of styles. That includes a battery-operated unit, a professionally installed model, and an Elite model, which uses power over ethernet. The firm also offers a variety of security cameras and related accessories. OneAV will also be providing dealers with third-party integration drivers for linking the doorbells up with Control4 and URC, both of which were made available from Blackwire Designs, a specialist USA driver company. James Trumper, Director of OneAV, commented, “Ring is already an incredibly popular product with our home technology professional customer base. We’re so happy to be collaborating with Ring to further promote the brand to the CI channel, providing the trade account purchase benefits OneAV offers – such as credit accounts, trade discounts and easy-ordering. OneAV are furthering our home security product range and we can’t think of a better way of making an entrance than with Ring.” OneAV 01684 576 348, oneav.co.uk
The secrets to merging technology with interior design
TIG is looking to marry technology and design
As part of the London Design Week talk strand ‘Conversations in Designing Technology’, distributor TIG (Technological Innovations Group) put together an interactive panel discussion on how design and technology can work hand-in-hand to deliver stunning smart homes for clients. The discussion was held at its Crestron home technology showroom, on Tuesday March 12. The session was chaired by consumer technology journalist, Chris Haslam, and the topic for discussion was ‘The Integrated Home – from Concept to Reality’. The session explored the challenges and rewards of designing a home that seamlessly integrates interior design with technology. Joining Chris on the panel were, Simon Hart of PRS Architects, Greg Currie, Regional Sales Manager at Crestron, Dan Eades from Environ, plus a representative from the lighting design community. The panel highlighted a real-world project and winner of the ‘Best Design Meets Technology’ award at the Crestron EMEA Integration Awards 2019, a Grade 1 listed country estate, which has been completely transformed with technology. The Eco-Luxe Country Estate showcases the benefits of early involvement of all parties in the design process – the importance of outlining a clear brief, close communication with the client, and much more. Attendees got the chance to understand how it is possible to create a stunning home, featuring an easy-to-use yet sophisticated home technology solution. Petra van Meeuwen from TIG commented, “We are excited to be involved in London Design Week this year, it’s an opportunity for us to provide insight in to the complete design process, alongside highlighting the benefits of home automation with the wider design community.” Technological Innovations Group, tig.eu

Dynaudio joins the CEDIA Designer’s manufacturer database
Dynaudio is the latest brand to join TCD database
Dynaudio, Danish Hi-Fi, pro-studio and automotive speaker specialist, has joined The CEDIA Designer’s (TCD) global cloudbased design-software database. TCD has gained traction by offering integrators a way to design high-render-channel-count immersive home cinemas or simpler media rooms. Now installers can spec Dynaudio’s new Custom Studio range of architectural speakers into the bargain. Currently available on TCD database are Dynaudio’s hi-fi speaker ranges, Emit and Contour, alongside the custom install speakers including the Cinema Master 60 reference LCR speaker, the Studio series architectural range and the Sub3 and Sub6 active subwoofers. The CM60 is based on Dynaudio’s highest performance professional studio monitors. Designed for continuous high-power operation, the CM60 has a 22hz to 21khz frequency response and is capable of SPL levels of 135db without compression or distortion. The Studio series modular LCR speaker is made up of the LCR65W dual 6.5in woofer unit and the LCRMT 4in midrange and 1in soft dome tweeter unit respectively. These can be combined or mounted individually for several configurations, making them suitable for both media rooms and home theatres. Also in the Studio range are three in-ceiling speakers, which come in 6.5in, 6.5in dual-voice-coil and 8in variants. These all have woofers angled at 18°, as well as adjustable tweeters. There are also two-way in-wall speakers in 6.5in and 8in woofer sizes. Peter Gibb, CI Business Development Manager EMEA, said, “At Dynaudio we want listeners to experience music or movies the way the artists and producers intended. We engineer products which deliver that ethos, but even the best speakers need to be paired with the right electronics and a good listening environment. “That’s why we’re so pleased to have partnered with The CEDIA Designer. It also makes the integrator’s lives so much simpler by helping them provide a polished, bespoke proposal to their client in a fraction of the time it could otherwise take.” Dynaudio’s CI Install are distributed by CAVD in the UK. BBC, ITV team up for BritBox
Is the UK ready for BritBox?
Given Netflix’s success in the past few years it’s no surprise that content providers are clamouring to launch their own streaming service. Disney’s streaming service is expected to launch later this year, while Apple is also reportedly working on its own Netflix competitor. Not to miss out, the BBC and ITV have announced a joint partnership to launch a new ‘made in Britain’ streaming service for British viewers, and it’s called BritBox. If the BritBox name sounds familiar, then that’s because it is. The streaming service is already available to those in the US and Canada, and essentially offers the best of British TV in boxset form. That means those in the US and Canada have been able to binge the entire back catalogue of Poirot and Luther, along with a whole host of other shows, all for a $7-a-month subscription fee. Now the two broadcasters want to bring that service to the UK, with an aim to launch the service as early as the back half of 2019; provided regulators approve the move. Both the BBC and ITV already have an existing relationship with Netflix, although BritBox goes further than the licensed shows available to Netflix users. Both broadcasters have 50 years-worth of content to pull from, and BritBox takes advantage of pretty much all of it. It’s not known whether the launch of its own streaming service will affect existing relationships with Amazon or Netflix, however; the latter of which is already contending with Disney and other content providers pulling their content in favour of their own streaming services. BritBox won’t solely be focused on old content, however. The service is also expected to launch several original programmes. If BritBox does launch in the UK, it’s expected to be made available on a variety of platforms. BritBox britbox.co.uk

High flying Meridian Audio makes deal with British Airways
Meridian is flying high with another iconic British brand
Meridian Audio has announced that it is entering a new partnership with British Airways, that will enable customers to enjoy a first class in-flight audio experience with sound engineered by the company. British Airways is set to deliver significant changes to the onboard product and service in its First cabin as part of its £6.5bn investment for customers. Part of this investment sees the airline improve the in-flight entertainment offering by providing customers with the opportunity to relax and enjoy the 1,000 hours of programmes available through high performance headphones crafted by British manufacturer, Meridian. Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ Director of Brand and Customer Experience, said, “In this, our centenary year, we’ve sought out some of the best British designers and manufacturers to work with to ensure travelling in First with British Airways is an unforgettable experience.” John Buchanan, CEO of Meridian, added, “We are thrilled to be partnering with British Airways and to have the opportunity to enhance the entertainment experience for passengers travelling in First. The aircraft cabin is an acoustically demanding environment and we have relished the engineering challenge of delivering headphones that will, for the first time, enable passengers to sit back and truly lose themselves in their in-flight movies and music.” John explained, “These new headphones have been designed to significantly reduce resonance, reflection, and distortion, allowing the user to enjoy a combination of exceptional noise cancellation, excellent sound quality, and ultimate comfort — resulting in a fully immersive in-flight sound experience.” Meridian 01480 445 678, meridian-audio.com
Clarity honours John Bamford with honorary fellowship
Paul Miller, (right) Editorial Director of AV Tech Media and President of EISA accepted the award on behalf of John Bamford
The Clarity Alliance honoured the late John Bamford during the seventh annual ‘Best of Show’ awards at The Bristol Show, bestowing its Honorary Fellowship award on the hugely respected and greatly missed journalist. Awards were also presented to exhibitors for their displays and demonstrations at the show and a special presentation was made to Simon Byles for his services to Clarity. Clarity, the UK Hi-Fi trade association, undertakes to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to the industry. The sixth annual Honorary Fellowship was awarded to one of the most respected members of the UK Hi-Fi industry, the late John Bamford, former Hi-Fi Answers and Hi-Fi News journalist, Hi-Fi Choice editor and Pioneer and Meridian product specialist. Presenting the award, Clarity’s chair, Tom Barron, said, “John was one of hi-fi’s great guys, with a love of music, hi-fi and a true gentleman. His warm smile, passion and enthusiasm and his huge contribution to the British hi-fi industry make him a very worthy recipient of the Clarity Honorary Fellowship. He will be very sadly missed.” Receiving the award on behalf of John Bamford was Paul Miller, Editorial Director of AVTech Media and President of EISA. Paul commented on John’s ability to convey complicated subjects in an easy to understand manner. “John’s elegant and communicative writing style was a boon to Hi-Fi News and his voice will be sorely missed.” He continued, “Although John had a varied career in hi-fi, he remained a true audiophile throughout. While at Pioneer he was an early advocate of high-resolution digital audio, employing the brand’s 96kHz/16-bit DAT players in some very convincing demonstrations. Later, he was a passionate evangelist for what we now know as ‘computer audio’. Insightful, good-humoured and hugely knowledgeable, John will be greatly missed by all who knew him in the hi-fi industry.” The Clarity Alliance +44 (0)20 8150 6741, clarityalliance.co.uk

Indigo Distribution picks up Cerasonar invisible speakers
Hidden sound just got a new partnership with Indigo and Cerasonar
There’s a new range of invisible speakers available to resellers in the UK, as Indigo Distribution has announced that it will begin supplying invisible loudspeakers from Danish brand Cerasonar. The creative and intellectual forces behind Cerasonar are Constantin, Julius and Ulrich Ranke; the latter of which founded the Eton hi-fi brand. While Eton is known for its patented Hexacone ultralightweight honeycomb membrane, Cerasonar is hoping to continue the legacy of offering something different to the marketplace. Cerasonar’s installation is comparable to that of a plasterboard panel, but that doesn’t mean it’s a one-size-fits-all offering. In fact, there are several ranges available from Cerasonar, including the Fit, Reference, Ultimate and Subwoofer series. Marc Waple, Sales and Marketing Director of Indigo Distribution, said, “The ability to offer our integrators a truly invisible loudspeaker option has been something on our list for a long time. Finding a brand like Cerasonar isn’t something that happens every day and we are delighted to have found this hidden gem for our customers. Invisible speaker brands so often focus on invisibility first and audio quality a distant second. We took our time finding that perfect product for the UK market that doesn’t compromise on sound yet still delivers the invisible.” Davide Artanidi, Sales Director of Cerasonar, added, “Finding the right distributor in the UK was key to our success and continued growth in 2019 and beyond. We believe that with Indigo Distribution and the unique benefits they offer to their loyal integrators, we have made the right choice.”

CEDIA updates Boot Camp course for new recruits
CEDIA is expanding its Boot Camp concept
CEDIA is hoping to encourage new recruits into the custom install industry, and it’s doing that by updating its Boot Camp for 2019; a course that is designed to teach the basic skills integrators need to get started in the industry. The CEDIA Boot Camp is a five-day course that focuses on foundation knowledge and skills in the most common areas of smart home technology. It is taught by CEDIA Certified Instructors and includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training. The course will also teach the engineering and technical foundations necessary to go on to CEDIAʼs five-day Technical School and the ESC-T certification exam. As part of its latest updates, the 2019 Boot Camp will offer a oneday course dedicated to testing, measurement and troubleshooting techniques. This course is all about what to do when commissioning systems, and for when things don’t quite go as expected. It covers troubleshooting methods and best practices, electrical system measurements integrators would use in their day-to-day operations, plus hands-on use of test equipment. The updated Boot Camp course also benefits from a new Electronic and Science Skills day. This will provide attendees with the essential training in the typical maths, science, and electronics that integrators will have to utilise within the home technology industry. While the whole Boot Camp is over five days, sessions can be booked individually. Those sessions will cover Electronic and Science Skills; Cables, Connectivity, and Structured Wiring; Testing, Measurement, and Troubleshooting Techniques; Audio, Video, and RF Systems for Integrators; and Health and Safety. Those wishing to attend can also book it as a package. CEDIA’s Boot Camp course is available to book for £799 + VAT for members, and £1,199 + VAT for non-members.

At EI Live!, OneAV will showcase the Kanta N2 and its 100 and 300 integration range using EQI (easy quick install), meaning no tools are required. Dedicated to acoustic performance, the Kanta N2 offers a new combination of Hi-Fi technologies: the marriage of Beryllium in the next generation IAL3 tweeter, and Flax for the midrange and bass speaker drivers. Being a fairly new partnership, OneAV is very excited to be showcasing Ring this year; a company that is committed to reducing crime in neighbourhoods around the world. By creating innovative devices that put the power of home security in the hands of homeowners, Ring is making that mission a reality. Be sure to look out for the video doorbell Elite on the stand. Exhibiting two-way noise cancellation, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection @ 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz, and ethernet connection including POE, 1080p HD video, live view and night vision, homeowners no longer have to compromise safety by blindly answering the door. OneAV is also giving the stage to HDANYWHERE’s MHUB 2.0 video matrix. Designed for the most modern home entertainment market requirements, the new matrix models ‘MHUB U’ and ‘MHUB PRO 2.0’ are (unsurprisingly)
fully HDMI 2.0 compatible, boasting 18G HDMI interfaces that support the latest 4K HDR video content, and Dolby Atmos surround sound. As with all MHUB systems they’re easily controlled via the bundled uControl universal remote app, or with Alexa voice control. Being one of the UK’s leading waterproof electronic suppliers, ProofVision is another brand that OneAV is always thrilled to illuminate. ProofVision’s mission is to be known for having high quality, affordable waterproof electronics and also to be able to ‘make it work in challenging conditions’. Installers can check out the range of outdoor Aire screens, that boast high-brightness panels, 4K picture quality, a slimline design, an operating temperature of -20 to 60°, antireflective screens, IP66 waterproof rating, and aluminium heat dispersion technology. Just Add Power’s design and manufacturing philosophy is ‘evolutionary, not revolutionary’. OneAV will be exhibiting the 3G+ 767DSS Dante Enhanced Sound System Transmitter. Just Add Power’s Dante not only distributes Ultra HD and 4K video with HDCP 2.2 over a single Cat5e cable, but is also compatible with Dante and AES67 audio networks, with separate switching of audio and video. Want to offer the client something new? Use the power of 4K HDR support, local HDMI loop out, and videowall mode to impress potential and existing clients without the risk of losing out on that all-important quality. So a very packed line up from One AV this year, get to the dedicated show site at www.eiliveshow.com sign up and make sure you see it all. OneAV 01684 576 348, oneav.co.uk

Essential Install | Case Study: Inspire Audio Visual
A hard act to follow This whole house project is already an award winner
Inspire AV picked up the Best Whole-Home Project at the recent global Control4 awards for this project known as Granite Smart Home. Company director Jonathan Apaloo brings EI up to speed. Jonathan explains, “We established Inspire Audio Visual back in 2009 after a spell where we worked for another integrator who had gone into administration. Ben (Davies, the company’s other director and founder) and I found ourselves out of a job and approached some of the clients who were either part way through their projects or had paid deposits, and negotiated to deliver them within the original scope and the business flourished from there. “Having come from sales and business development and Ben from electrical engineering and lighting design, we had a natural split of abilities which enabled us initially to deliver projects start to finish. Our roles have kept a similar theme, although as the business has grown there are added areas of involvement.” Jonathan says that the company loves influencing the project from the earliest stage possible and delivering something really special. “One of our earlier projects in London was on Great Cumberland Place which we were

The AV, automation and style of the home create a very pleasing synergy throughout the property
able to do just that. It was a project with eight zones of HD video, 12 zones of audio, integrated alarm door entry and CCTV. As we were fully based in the north of the UK, the logistical challenge meant that being as productive offsite and prior to the install was key to remaining efficient and profitable.” For this particular projector, Jonathan, explains, “The initial enquiry came from one of our partners, a high-end joinery and kitchen designer and the client had asked for an introduction to a cinema specialist. After a couple of discussions around the requirements, I arranged a meeting with the client to take a look at the property and get more info on the client and their family and also their expectations.
“Whilst the initial brief was around designing a cinema room, we established that there were also further smart home requirements throughout the property. This project was for a young family and this was a major renovation to a large house they had purchased in the city, it hadn’t had any real work done in the past 30 – 40 years so was ripe for such a project.” The client was an existing Control4 user so was comfortable with the user interface and understood the way in which the system operated. However, there were other features including lighting control which they currently experienced, so it would be quite a different system from the current house. Jonathan elaborates, “I would class the client as pretty ‘tech savvy’, although he’s not within the same industry, his industry relies on an extensive array of technology to get results, so it’s only natural he was keen to be involved and understand the end result. He allowed us to take control of all the technical aspects of the project. The property was stripped to a bare shell to allow us to integrate the latest technology into this stunning (now future-proofed) home. “At the planning stage we were able to provide a mood board and 3D renders to enable the client, interior designers and other trades involved to visualise the end result. Prior to installation, we invited the client to a demonstration facility room to get a feel of how the finished article may look and feel. There is nothing like trying before you buy.” The brief remained pretty solid through the build, however the eye-catching garden lighting became an additional feature as the garden design was not completed upon the initial engagement. Once the design was provided, the team added a further 16 circuits of lighting to the Control4 system so that they could be tied into the whole house lighting system. The Control4 intercom anywhere app was also added as it became available during the project.

Project detail Control4 automation is at the heart of the cinema and the rest of the house
For AV control, Jonathan explains, “As they already had Control4 within their current home and were happy with it, we naturally specified it again to control their AV devices. Eight zones of Control4 audio with Sonos feeding the system using the Control4 iPad/iPhone app and in-wall and Wi-Fi touchscreens, and then Control4 SR260 remotes to control Sky Q in the rack plus local sources at each TV and of course the TVs themselves. Due to the distance
to the client from our office, we wanted to include an HD distribution system which allowed us to monitor the system remotely and diagnose issues, so we included a Pulse-Eight 8x8 video matrix which would also allow us to distribute a 4K signal where required.” Over in the cinema room, the client wanted a space for films, gaming and sport, so from a viewing perspective a 1.78:1 screen was the obvious choice.

The client was an existing Control4 user
Jonathan adds, “In providing a reference quality cinema, we considered the room size, number of seats and ambient light before we selected the Sony projector (which had just been released). Having demonstrated the audio system at the demonstration facility, we were confident, as was the client, that the Triad system specified would be more than capable of delivering the required audio quality.” The lighting control system was specified around the lighting design, taking into account the dimming/ switching required for each zone so the team could deliver the best lighting levels for the customer. Control4 compatible RGB LED strip lighting was specified for both the kitchen and cinema room which is fully controlled from the Control4 panelised lighting system.
Jonathan says, “Again due to the distance to the clients site, we added remote monitoring from Domotz to preempt any issues with the system. Coupling this with an ‘essential spares kit’ and a local IP camera in the rack room has enabled us to reduce the number of visits to site.” As for other challenges, Jonathan recounts, “There were a number of challenges from very thick granite walls from both a Wi-Fi point of view and cabling, high ceilings, and the initial shape/layout of the cinema room. We also had to integrate some of the clients existing B&O equipment which required more time than expected. As previously highlighted, this project was a 12 hour round trip journey from our HQ. This required clear, concise planning and execution of the project.” So favourite part of the project? Jonathan enthuses, “The lounge and kitchen area with the Sony Pro TV and Artisan soundbar looks amazing, but we really feel that the cinema room is our favourite and the client’s favourite. The way in which we designed the room in the given space and the end result has blown us all away; it has just worked so well. It’s one room where we can really show all our creative skills and integration in one place; audio, video and lighting control. The best part is the way the client feels about the cinema; all the family love it and use it regularly.” Inspire AV 0203 151 50750 inspire-av.com

EssentialREVIEW Klipsch C-310ASWI Subwoofer
Super sub? Our intrepid CI focused review series continues as Richard Stevenson runs his ears over Klipsch’s flagship air-shifter, the C-310ASWI.
Klipsch’s flagship C-310ASWI subwoofer boasts a solid specification and an impressive raft of installer friendly features. Its automatic EQ system offers extremely flexible installation and the associated app has a wealth of control as well as six EQ presets and sereval control system integrations. Once set up, there is no need for access to the rear panel, further aiding install flexibility. Top line specification is on par for the price point, featuring neatly made, near cube-shaped heavyweight MDF cabinet. It is remarkably compact, at around 350mm on each dimension, and finished in handbuffed piano gloss black paint. Power is supplied by a 400W ‘BASH’ hybrid Class D amplifier driving a forward facing 10in long throw driver. The driver is the largest of Klipsch’s ‘Cerametallic’ cone models, said to offer high speed and exceptional power handling. Bass reproduction from the compact cabinet is aided by a pair of 10in passive radiators, positioned on the left and right flanks. These are unusually finished with a flat, circular gloss panel. They give the Klipsch a svelte and
stylish look but do limit precisely where you can place the subwoofer. Tight against a sidewall or built-into a stud wall with only the main driver exposed are naturally not options. Around the back, the rear panel offers a veritable cornucopia of connections for a subwoofer. The roster covers low level RCA, balanced XLR, high level speaker input and 2.4GhZ Wi-Fi for connection to Klipsch’s WA-3 wireless sender. All inputs are stereo and any one can be used for LFE by connection to just one channel. Each of the four inputs is individually selectable from the app, allowing you to configure the sub for a variety of different set-ups. For installers, Klipsch’s Low Control app sets the standard for subwoofer remote control systems. Input selection, subwoofer EQ, 5-band manual parametric EQ and individual level trims for each input headline the options. The app extends to mirroring all of the controls on the rear panel including adjustable low pass filter, full 0-180 degree variable phase, and the ability to adjust the power-on mode threshold signal level.

EssentialREVIEW Klipsch C-310ASWI Subwoofer
Impressive performance?
With the C-310ASWI suitably dialled into the room with Auto EQ implemented to obtain the flattest response at the listening position, the Klipsch is extremely impressive. The difference in performance between the raw sub dropped into a corner and one with a little time spent on placement positioning and running the EQ system is night and day. Getting the Klipsch dialled-in to this extent is supremely easy and very quick compared to pretty much any other sub on the market. For time-pressed installers, that is ideal. Despite its compact dimensions it delivers serious maximum SPL at key LFE frequencies too; well over 110dB at 1m in our test room. The dual passives massively help to drive efficiency in the room even if it does realistically require the C-310ASWI to be in free space. Another trade-off to the high efficiency derived from the passives is some slight blurring of attack and decay transients. Sealed box designs will win the day here with sharper focus and increased slam, but you would be looking at a 12in or 15in sealed box subwoofer and an amp with twice the horsepower to deliver the same levels as the Klipsch. It would necessarily be a much larger box, which would less than ideal for all but the most grandiose scale installs. For its compact size, excellent Auto EQ system and sophisticated control from app or CI system, the Klipsch C-310ASWI is an ideal install sub form small to mid size AV projects.
With a hard-wire Ethernet network connection on the rear panel, there is also an option to power up via a network linked control system. Full integration into Control4, Crestron, Savant, and RTI control systems are all catered for, allowing programming to automatically change input, EQ, gain, and phase settings by source or activity. For finessing the install you can adjust audio delay from 0-20ms, adjust the brightness of the front LED indicator or turn it off altogether, and switch the Auto EQ implementation on or off. This is an extremely comprehensive line up of functionality, all available from a CI control system or any Android or iOS smart device. The key to the Klipsch’s USP for installers is without doubt its DSP engine with self-EQ function. Few AVRs even attempt to EQ to the sub channel, leaving the LFE channel speaker to interact with the room as the fickle whim of room acoustics dictates. In an install where the sub position is fixed due to cosmetic retraints,
being able to EQ the LFE channel can have a profound influence on the overall sonic result. The auto-EQ function involves running the Klipsch Low Control app on a smart device with a microphone. You simply place the smartphone/tablet on top of the sub, and run the Auto EQ system. The sub emits a sweep tone and the mic in the device pics up the signal as a near field measurement. A second sweep can be measured at the listening position and filtering is applied to the sub output accordingly. During the EQ measurement, the app shows a frequency response graph in real time to give you an idea of what is happening at the listening position. Assuming you have some flexibility in sub position within the installation design, you can move the sub around to give you a very good idea of how the position effects the response as perceived at the listening position. For simply setting up a subwoofer in a standard home cinema system, that is an invaluable tool.

CEDIA Member of Excellence Programme
Giles Sutton, CEDIA Senior Vice President of Industry Engagement, explains the aims of the recently introduced CEDIA Member of Excellence Programme. Can you explain the thinking behind the scheme – what does it looks to achieve?
Giles Sutton, CEDIA Senior Vice President of Industry Engagement, explains the roll out of a new member scheme
The Member of Excellence programme was born out of member feedback to encourage inclusiveness and honour the best in the industry. The Member of Excellence programme further confirms the extraordinary work of our members. In crafting the programme, we took a holistic approach that focusses on companies’ continuing education, customer service, and community service efforts. Our hope is that member companies of all sizes will use the programme to push themselves to the next level of professionalism and service.
What are the details of how the scheme will actually work? What do I do to qualify and how do I stay qualified?
Broadly, participating companies must engage in the application process and demonstrate their commitment to continuing education, customer service, and community outreach. More specifically, aspiring Member of Excellence and Advanced Member companies must meet requirements including: • Having one CEDIA Certified individual within the company (based on company size) and a percentage of all full-time staff must achieve 10 Continuing Education Unit points per year. • Three client or customer references from three projects within the last 12 months and two references from CEDIA Trade Supplier Members. • Either one CEDIA volunteer on full-time staff or at least one CEDIA Outreach Instructor (COI) on staff. • In addition to meeting all Advanced Member status requirements above, Member of Excellence designees must be selected as a CEDIA Awards Winner or CEDIA Awards Finalist within the last three years and a percentage (based on size) of each company’s full-time technical staff must hold at least one CEDIA advanced certification — ESC-T, ESC-D, or ESC-N Certification (does not include ESC). Once a company has been confirmed as a CEDIA Advanced Member or Member of Excellence, they carry that designation through two renewal periods. CEDIA will check with the company after the first year to ensure all of the original information that was submitted continues to be accurate. At the beginning of the third year, each company will be required to re-submit their information to receive the designation.
What are the main benefits for those who are admitted into the scheme?
In addition to the heightened industry recognition and an increased prowess among their customers, Advanced Members will receive access to exclusive marketing tools like the CEDIA Advanced Member logo and a higher listing on the CEDIA Find a Professional tool on the CEDIA website. CEDIA Members of Excellence are given an even greater set of marketing tools, first placement in CEDIA Find a Professional listings, increased access to cutting-edge CEDIA Education offerings, and a discount on CEDIA training products. For more information, visit cedia.net/programs/

Essential Install | Pulse Cinemas
Pulse Cinemas will showcase Lutron’s Sivoia QS Triathlon blinds
Pulse Cinemas looks to light up EI Live! 2019
Pulse Cinemas is set for its biggest ever EI Live! presence with a barn-storming fully loaded cinema demonstration, as well as insights into new brand offers such as UK power products specialist, IsoTek. The next stage in the company’s live outreach efforts will focus on EI Live! 2019, which takes place April 30 to May 1 at the show’s new venue of Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. Pulse Cinemas’ show presence will consist of one area offering a full cinema demonstration, allowing visitors to assess just how good Pulse Cinemas’ line up of specialist cinema brands are, and another area where installers will get the chance to learn more about some of the other crucial products and new brand introductions.
The Pulse Cinemas team will be on hand to maximise the value of your visit to their stand at EI Live! 2019
Immersive cinema experience
One thing Pulse Cinemas is a huge believer in is experiencing its brands in the flesh. Pulse Cinemas also feels it currently has the strongest line-up of products that it has ever offered. For EI Live! the company is offering a full Dolby Atmos experience to underline what can be achieved with the right products, set up and knowhow. The cinema will feature Paradigm speakers, a brand that Pulse Cinemas long admired before securing its distribution in the UK in 2018. The brand’s ability to deliver the power, but also the detail needed in cinema settings, is one of the main reasons the distributor was keen to secure the brand and this will be showcased with Paradigm delivering three P5 LCRs to make up the front firing part of the audio. Get the front sound stage right, and the rest should fall into place, and Paradigm gives installers the confidence to do just that, says Pulse Cinemas. Paradigm also features in the surrounds and rear channels with four Millennia LP Xls taking up that role and four CI Pro P80-Rs filling in the rest of the channels. Bass will be delivered by two Paradigm Defiance x15 subs. The Defiance range is a relatively recent introduction and promises power and control in ‘defiance’ of the speaker’s relatively small form factor. Pulse Cinemas believes that integrated audio never sounded this good and it aims to prove it at EI Live!

Essential Install | Pulse Cinemas
A full-blown Dolby cinema will feature Paradigm, AudioControl, SIM2, Kaleidescape, Screen Research and Primasonic
AudioControl will be powering and controlling the cinema
Power and processing are of course vital and for EI Live! AudioControl steps to the fore with an AVR 7 and Pantages G3 five channel amp driving the cinema. The two products will be working together as the AVR 7 will be processing all the channels, but only powering the Atmos height channels. All the other channels will be powered by the Pantages G3. The Pulse Cinemas team is keen to show installers just how powerful, but also flexible, AudioControl can be. A Screen Research F S3 fixed frame acoustically transparent screen will be partnering a recent addition to the Pulse Cinemas family, a Domino 4 UHD HDR projector from Italian specialist SIM2. This single-chip DMD 4K UHD beamer has a reputation for delivering a particularly vibrant and engaging colour pallet and Pulse Cinemas is keen to show that off. Completing the picture will be an anamorphic super wide lens from Primasonic, partnering the projector. Delivering the content will be Pulse Cinemas stalwart, Kaleidescape with a Strato 4K movie and content player. The room will also be fully treated with Vicoustic panels for absorption, diffusion and bass management, allowing Pulse Cinemas to show how this area can take cinemas up that vital extra notch.
Power to the people! The Pulse Cinemas presence at EI Live! will also include a deep dive into some of the company’s other offerings including a new addition to the brand line up, UK maker IsoTek, with its high-quality range of power control and cleaning products. IsoTek’s mantra is that the first input into any system is the electricity; without quality there, any cinema or AV system will struggle. This is especially true today as many pollutants create ‘noise’ within the mains supply. Items such as computers and kitchen appliances, mobile phones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth products all contribute to interference. The electricity supply, which flows through every component in an AV system or cinema and ultimately delivers the experience to the user, needs to be clean and free from interference to let the magic happen. IsoTek has a whole range of clever products to help installers do just that: clean up the power, protect the equipment and make every system the best it can be. Keith Martin, MD of IsoTek will be at the show to explain exactly how his products can take projects to the next level. Pulse Cinemas will also be featuring products from the Lutron family including a live demo of the maker’s Sivoia QS Triathlon blinds. This series is described as the most fashionable, flexible and affordable motorised shading available, delivering battery-powered functionality for easy installation and maintenance. It is a strong retrofit proposition for cinemas and other areas of the home. Its party time!
No doubts that the hospitality industry is fertile ground for exciting and engaging AV and interactive systems. But how do installers get involved? By reading on of course! The new Habitech Pro Division and Commercial AV Training Courses that form the just established ‘Habitech Professional’ initiative were set up not only to introduce established commercial install operations to Sonance Pro, Yamaha Pro, Ruckus and Wyrestorm etc, but also to help residential installers into the commercial workspace. In response to a growing number of requests from it’s trad dealer base, and with the support of the resi sales team, Habitech has created two complementary Commercial AV training courses, scheduled for May 2019 and designed to help CI integrators extend their skillset to commercial installation. The one-day ‘Introduction to Commercial AV’ course is aimed at those wishing to expand their commercial AV knowledge and offers a better understanding and experience of planning and deploying systems. It examines the difference between residential AV systems and those used in commercial applications; power and impedance requirements; low impedance serial/parallel applications; high impedance (‘constant voltage’ systems); audio transports; audio sources; automixers; integrating video and audio; AVoIP and the handson experience of designing a system. Developed for engineers who have attended the ‘Introduction to Commercial AV’ course, or those with
experience of commercial AV installation, the ‘Commercial AV Integrator’ course covers the more advanced aspects of CAV deployment including introduction to CAV configuration software; organising CAV diagrams; configuring an MTX/MRX system using MTX/XMV Editor (including a hands-on practical, wiring video and audio sources, including balanced inputs). As part of the training the company will be introducing Habitech Professional’s expanding product range, including the Sonance Professional Series of distributed audio in-ceiling, pendant and all-weather on-wall speakers; Yamaha Pro’s configurable multi-zone power amplifiers and versatile audio processors, which offer integrators the ability to design centrally-managed, expandable systems; Wyrestorm’s ‘Network HD’ videoover-IP platform, Ruckus’ peerless switch technology and wireless prowess, and iPort’s ‘Surface-Mount’ platform of iPad wall-mount solutions. Also contributing value-added power to the ProAV space are Habitech’s audio design services utilising EASE Software and the talents of Giovanni Scatola in support of two new business development specialists: James Dennis, ex Bose Pro and Gareth Cooke, ex Harman and Ministry of Sound.

The pendants adopt a minimalistic design similar to pendant lighting for discreet installation to blend into the environment. They’re available in 4in, 6.5in and 8in two-way designs and an 8in woofer in either black or white (paintable). An integrated top cover hides the mounting hardware and wiring connector, while the supplied 16.4’ (5m) suspension and safety cable with integrated Gripple hangers, ensure a fast and secure installation. The weather-proof surface-mount speakers feature Sonance’s Fast-Mount bracket and front cable connection to speed up the installation process and provide a minimalistic appearance. They’re available in 4in, 5.25in 6.5in and 8in two-way models and an 8in woofer in either black or white, also paintable. The 600 Series adds to Wyrestorm’s multi-platform NetworkHD line of scalable AVoIP solutions, delivering lossless 4K/60 4:4:4 with HDR at zero latency over 10GbE SDVoE. Other features include 4K/2K scaling, routable multichannel audio and IR/RS232 control, along with video wall and powerful multi-view processing. AptoVision’s BlueRiver NT2000 with Plethora engine provides the firepower behind the 600 Series delivering lossless instant switching of full HDMI 4K UHD at 60Hz 4:4:4 with HDR and zero-frame latency via off-the-shelf 10Gb Ethernet switches. The NHD600 series joins the low bandwidth H.264 HD over 1GbE 100/200 Series TX/ RX modules and the low latency JPEG2000 4K HDR over 1GbE 400 Series architecture The Ruckus ICX 7000 family delivers high-performance switching and reliability to meet the network demands of
high-density 802.11ac / 802.11ax Wi-Fi deployments and UHD video streaming. Its introduction is designed to offer seamless, scalable, end-to-end Ruckus network operation. Ruckus ICX-7000 switches offer 10GbE uplinks and high PoE budgets (with support for PoE+ and PoH) to serve new generations of wireless APs, surveillance cameras, video displays and other devices in high-density wireless environments. The ICX 7650-48ZP switch for instance is designed for next-gen 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless access points and future wireless technology, supporting the 803.2bz standard and offering 2.5/5/10GbE ports to connect Multi-gigabit APs at data speeds up to 10 times faster than regular Gigabit Ethernet on standard twisted pair cables. It takes PoE to the next level with support for the 802.3bt standard (pending ratification) delivering up to 90W per port to power high-end Ethernet infrastructure. It’s also compatible with UPOE (up to 60W per port). All ICX switches offer 10GbE uplink options at the entry-level and 40GbE and 100GbE at the mid-range to eliminate bottlenecks between network layers. ICX multi-purpose switches can be deployed standalone or stacked, providing simplified network deployment and management.
Auction house to fun house
As an example of what can be achieved, the old Cape Dunn auction house in Manchester was recently transformed into a four-storey live music venue and bar comprising two bars, a kitchen serving food, pizza from Pepperoni Playboys, two gig and club spaces as well as a roof terrace. Taking care of this hospitality transformation was Hollowsphere, appointed to provide both the lighting and projection equipment that would be used for live music visuals, film screenings and digital signage. With a 250 capacity, the ‘Pink Room’ on the first floor is the largest of the gig spaces and needed a bright projector to fill the large projection area. The team chose the WUXGA resolution Optoma WU515ST, which has a large zoom range, lens shift, built-in HDBaseT and fourcorner geometric adjustment to simplify installation. The team ran video over HDBaseT using SY Electronics’ HDMI to HDBaseT converters.

This compact little projector from Epson delivers opportunities into the hospitality sector
Adrian Ball, director at Hollowsphere, says, “We needed a super bright projector for the largest gig space and the WU515ST fitted perfectly. The inbuilt HDBaseT made installation straightforward.” The team installed the full HD resolution EH400+ projector in the basement space, which gives a platform to emerging artists and the short throw full HD EH200ST on the stairs for digital signage. Adrian adds, “There was very little room on the stairway so we needed the short throw projector to accommodate this lack of projection distance. And the EH400+ is a great cost-effective all-rounder for the basement.” All the projectors are fitted with Raspberry Pi boxes to provide scheduled digital signage and can be operated remotely for music visuals on club nights. YES opened its four-storey space for musicians and music lovers in September 2018, designed with a different vibe on every level. The projectors are used on a regular basis for film events and background visuals for bands and DJs. Adrian explains, “Having so many projectors in one building of this type makes it stand out from other bars and clubs. The imagery is bright and vibrant and really adds to the atmosphere of this venue. The feedback has been excellent and the club has been nominated for City Life best live music venue and bar of 2018.” Underlining the increasing opportunities for projection, Paul Wilson, Product Manager for pro displays at Epson UK, observes, “In
today’s digital age, customers are looking for immersive and stand out experiences whether they are eating out with their family or relaxing with friends. The world of hospitality is slowly catching up with increasingly sophisticated consumer expectations and restaurateurs are beginning to look towards digital signage projectors as a way of displaying information, engaging with their customers, and making the overall experience more exciting and immersive. “Restaurants and bars have traditionally opted against using projectors, not wanting a bulky rectangular box hanging from the ceiling detracting from the aesthetics of the venue. However, Epson’s LightScene EV-100 series comes disguised as a subtle spotlight, that also offers great flexibility through its 360° installation capability.” The small cylindrical chassis features a sealed optical engine, which reduces the possibility of any dust getting into the product, removing the need for a filter. Similarly, being a laser projector, no lamps are required either so from a maintenance perspective, user input is minimal. Epson says that a 20,000-hour maintenancefree guarantee provides a generous competitive advantage over existing products, such as flat panel displays or TV screens. Paul adds, “The projector can be used as a traditional spotlight when simple lighting effects are needed, and also comes with Epson’s own Projector Content Manager Software for quick and easy set-up without specialist installation.

Dynaudio Custom Studio series
Heard, not seen. The Dynaudio Custom Studio series: round in-ceiling and rectangular in-wall speakers in both 6.5in and 8in versions, including DVC and modular in-wall LCR variants. All featuring our acclaimed 1in soft-dome tweeters and MSP woofers. And all – of course – designed and developed in Denmark.
Our in-wall and in-ceiling speakers are a piece of cake to install. Before we even put pen to drawing board, we made a long list of all the little woes and gripes installers commonly have. And then we stamped them all out with clever solutions such as our innovative install frame (with clever friction clips for tool-free fitting); simple adjustment of the speaker position (just push it with your finger); and paintable magnetic grilles (which snap right into place without adjustment). Done. Now, about that cake…

BSN.cloud is BrightSign’s new multi-layer playermanagement platform
The software allows users to upload their own content to the projector, create playlists and schedule content in a real-time calendar. Favourites can then be added onto the remote control, which in itself can be used as a shortcut for all functions. “For even more flexibility users also have the option of uploading their desired content to an SD card which can be inserted into the back of the projector; making the LightScene a standalone device that simply runs on power and the SD card. The uploaded content can be changed remotely without the need for a computer.” Paul also argues, “Projected digital signage gives restaurateurs extra flexibility enabling them to display the most up to date information in real time and tailoring the experience the customer receives, ensuring it is always fresh and relevant. “For example, rather than just showing traditional pricing, staff can update the day’s specials on the go as they sell out or provide updates on sports events. More experienced users can also work with advanced techniques such as edge-blending to achieve stunning results in larger spaces that require multiple-unit installations.” Paul adds that creating content should not be a problem, “The use of digital signage in hospitality is an entirely new market, meaning that there is limited content available. However, even those that were previously using more traditional AV products can easily create a dynamic and exciting customer experience. Signage projectors that blend into any environment enable hospitality establishments to surprise their clients, giving them an interactive experience that will have an immediate and lasting impact.”
Signage seekers
Digital signage is of course a big part of offering compelling and engaging experiences for hospitality venues. Specialist in this area BrightSign has recently announced its new BSN.cloud, a robust playermanagement platform driven by BrightSign OS 8.0, the commercial-grade operating system purpose-built for digital signage. “BSN.cloud consists of three clouds,” explains Jeff Hastings, BrightSign CEO. “At the base level, the Control Cloud subscription is included with every player. It offers BrightSign customers simple provisioning and setup options and real-time data about player health.” Within the Control Cloud level, the B-Deploy feature enables complete configuration of players remotely, reducing install times and making player setup or provisioning an almost automatic process.
Large-scale rollouts are simplified via new options for automatically setting up large groups of players simultaneously. And for small-scale rollouts, a new onscreen setup process uses QR codes for easy player setup via mobile phone. The Control Cloud also includes access to view realtime health information of the player and the ability to change configurations and deploy operating system updates in real time without having to ever physically interact with the player. BrightSign says it is also committed to partnering with the leading digital signage solutions partners. Appspace, Carousel Digital Signage, Creative Realities, Diversified, Four Winds Interactive, Mvix, Reflect Systems and Signagelive are just a few of the partner companies in the process of using the BSN.cloud APIs to integrate their software with the BSN.cloud management platform. Regardless of the software chosen for a project, all BrightSign players can connect – at no charge – to BSN. cloud and take advantage of all the Control Cloud services. “As it becomes increasingly common and more desirable to connect all kinds of devices to the cloud, digital signage for the vast majority will exist as connected networks,” adds Jeff. “BSN.cloud is a robust playermanagement platform intended to provide secure and scalable networking options for end-users, integrators, network managers and DOOH operators.” The other two clouds within BSN.cloud are the Management Cloud and the Content Cloud. The Management Cloud is a data-driven cloud service that delivers a complete set of digital signage network management tools to the end-user. It collects and stores data about performance measures that are important to network managers such as advertising proof of play, player performance and health, remote snapshots. The Management Cloud pushes out email notifications about issues important to end-users such as a subscription that is about to expire or players that are reporting errors. At the highest level, the Content Cloud adds the media library and content feeds, schedules, presentation management and content distribution tools. BrightSign’s user interface into the BSN. cloud player management platform is the new BrightAuthor:connected which will be available in Q2 2019. Other UI’s will be available in the coming months from CMS and channel partners. BrightSign also recently launched its HD and LS Series 4 players rounding out its Series 4 player family. The three new BrightSign HD4 and LS4 models feature upgraded player hardware and run the latest version of BrightSign’s dedicated operating system (v8.0). The players feature updates to the HTML rendering engine, with the HD4 offering 4K native decode supporting HDMI 2.1 and HDR10. Both the HD4 and LS4 boast even higher power efficiency than their Series 3 counterparts.

What is Brexit going to bring the installation market?
Brexit: Strange and interesting times
Experienced programmer, regular EI contributor and MD of Clever Rooms, Cliff Stammers grabs Brexit by the horns. There is no doubt that it is the most divisive question to have faced us metropolitan Brits in modern times. Regardless of your own personal politics or opinion, there absolutely is no escaping the fact that Brexit looms large for all of us, and that the implementation of it (or otherwise) is probably going to have a long-lasting impact on our livelihoods for the rest of our working careers. Big stuff indeed then. Without dwelling on the perceived benefits or shortcomings of such a contentious issue, I feel sure that many of you reading this will have each gazed in to your own crystal ball in an effort to try to second guess which way this one is going to fall; positively or negatively. Based on little more than instinct and intuition, we have all – over the last thirty months or so – been making enormous decisions for our respective businesses. Decisions that we feel will put us in the strongest position come the day of reckoning. After all, that’s our job is it not? To protect our income, to protect our staff and to protect our families. Well, by the time you read this, judgement day will have been and gone. So: how was it for you? And what happens next? I’ll be bold here and state that it’s my guess that we are all probably currently united in one thing – that what we have all confidently predicted at a hundred dinner parties, heated pub rows and cold-hearted family melt-downs and punchups since June 2016 is, in fact, actually very far removed from what is really going down. In essence, we are all wrong. The minutiae of each individual Brexit perambulation – that domino effect of decision-making – will only now start to become apparent as the whole process begins to unfold in the real world. In precisely the same way that we might design a convoluted audio and video distribution system on paper, we’ll only properly get a feel for how that system works once it is finally implemented. Brexit is going to be the same as that. And right now, we’re at ‘first fix’. The fateful day has passed, and we still cannot fully comprehend what it is that has been done, much less so how it will impact on our businesses and on our industry. We cannot know any of this until enough time has passed
to allow the ramifications of a decision as momentous as Brexit to mature. Anyone who tries to tell you that they know how this will play out is, at best, simply guessing intelligently. Me included. With so many of the products that we include in our systems being manufactured overseas, the import of goods has got to be the number one consideration. After that, I would suggest the availability of labour to physically deploy those systems is the next biggest concern. While I have no doubt that, given time, any concerns over the restriction of labour can be addressed by training, in the short term our industry could experience a possible curtailing of skill sets that may make operations difficult to sustain. Although this of course isn’t government policy, there’s no denying that a significant number of overseas nationals may not feel so comfortable living in our post-Brexit world. And in an industry like ours that has for years often struggled to provide enough decent engineering capability, we are facing a situation where, if that pool of talent shrinks, then the inability to call upon qualified labour is going to exacerbate an already problematic factor in our individual quests to supply a quality product to our clients. At least in the short term. As for product import, this surely has got to be an obvious potential problem. With Brexit being implemented without even a clearly defined border in place between the UK and the EU, then the movement of goods across an invisible line is going to be endlessly subject to interpretation by those that seek to lower costs via the toxic mechanism of tax avoidance. And what if any of these taxation laws become retrospective? And goods found to be in contravention of these laws are removed from the UK? It could remain a threat hanging over our work for many years to come. Like I say, nobody really knows right now what the coming months will bring. But one thing is certain; we are all in this together for good or for bad. So please, let’s open some debate on this subject and see if we can make sense of it: something our elected politicians appear to have so far failed to achieve.

Essential Install | Automation Platforms
There is a definite trend for automation platforms, entry level and high-end, to put more control in the hands of end users
Programmed for success
The world of automation platforms is moving pretty fast these days with established players and newer entrants all vying for a piece of the pie. EI presents a round up of the latest news.
The Elan platform is on a charge in the UK currently looking to expand its installer base
The Elan system is definitely on a charge of late with an expanded distribution network that now covers Alltrade, Aldous Systems, and Indigo Distribution. For its part, Alltrade underlines that the full product line up, technical support and training for the Elan Certified Dealer programme is now available from this distributor which sees its involvement as a significant expansion of its smart home plans. Ronan McTernan, Alltrade’s CI Sales Executive, comments, “Elan offers one of the most popular and widely installed domestic home automation and control platforms across Europe. “It is designed from the ground-up to be easy to install and configure, integrates seamlessly with a wide range of automation products, and the Elan Configurator allows a very high level of project personalisation without traditional programming. We are not the UK’s only trade supplier of Elan, but we aim to be the best.” To try and realise that goal, Alltrade has taken on the full Elan portfolio of hardware across CI, AV signal distribution, security and home automation. The range features HDBaseT matrix switches, touch panels and Elan’s innovative G! controller as well as speakers, sensors, IP cameras and Wi-Fi room thermostats.
The range is available over the counter at all six of Alltrade’s Trade Counters in Brighton and Hove, Cardiff, Hemel Hempstead, Maidstone, Bournemouth and Reading. Own vehicle next day delivery in a roughly 50 mile radius of each trade counter is a major part of the Alltrade’s offering. Each branch offers immediate stock, face to face advice from staff and a free project planning service. Next day courier delivery is available for customers with projects further afield. Each branch has a dedicated training room and offers a regular calendar of free Elan training courses. The Introduction to Elan training course covers the Elan product family and associated digital resources and setting up the gTools configuration software. Elan’s scalability means projects can get large and complex, making Alltrade’s free project planning service a valuable resource, says the company. The team can specify Elan products and architecture from plan or, for larger projects, undertake site visits, offering advice on how to maximise the features and benefits of the system. Other notable Elan additions include two new intelligent touch panels (8in and 12in) which include voice control, IntelliVision face recognition and high-resolution video. Also included is a dual digital MEMS microphone-array providing enhanced voice control that lets users choose their preferred voice interface (including Amazon Alexa) without needing to fill the house with voice assistant hardware.

Crestron has re-imagined its entry level platform and birthed Crestron Home
The first control system to really pull this off convincingly, the face recognition is a strong addition and can act as a gateway to pre-programmed scenes, settings and access scenarios. With face recognition enhanced by voice control as well, Elan argues these are amongst the highest functioning panels around. The touch panels display high-resolution video, including monitoring and playback from Elan Surveillance cameras and NVRs. Two-way audio and video enable communication with the video doorbell, paging, and Elan Intercom services. Elan Discovery simplifies installation by auto-discovering the touch panels on the network and configuring them with just a click. The panels can be powered locally using a 12VDC power supply or via PoE and connect to the controller over Wi-Fi or using power over Ethernet and with a single wire. As well as being represented by its distributors, Elan will have its own stand at EI Live! 2019 (97), so get to the show and check all the new functionality out. Habitech wants to underline the possibilities of the Legrand MyHOME_Up automation platform, which is designed to offer fulsome functionality, but at a very competitive price. Its plug-and-play architecture uses commonplace wiring techniques to deliver control over light, heating/cooling, music and door entry in any room from a choice of luxury switch designs or a mobile app. The system can extend to one room or scale to control a large residential house, MDU or hotel without the need for programming and sets up through the app. And because it’s from Legrand, there is a big choice of décor-matching switch designs supported by complementary styles for every wall fitting, including light switches, single and double-gang sockets, and data points all in UK sizes. What sets the system apart from its predecessor is the new MyHOMEServer1 server, which enables the ease of control and expansion of the system. The app is also designed so that end users can create and customise smart actions of their own, based on their lifestyle. Richard Hopkins, Lead Marketing Manager, Wiring Devices for Legrand UK & Ireland, comments: “The beauty of the system, particularly for contractors, is the use of the intuitive ‘app’ configuration tool, which allows contractors to install and handover a home automation system in a fraction of the time they would have previously been able to do so.”
Crestron puts Pyng out to pasture Crestron’s big news is the ‘retirement’ of the Pyng platform – well the name at least – as the plug n play Crestron offering has evolved to a new version called Crestron Home, which has a slew of new features and refreshed interface. A completely new UI with attractive dials and sliders offers many more chances to personalise the interface experience with images of the home and family. In a similar vein to other systems, Crestron is looking to get users more involved with that side of things, providing the ability to adjust scenes and personalise. The system is powered by OS 3 and has been designed from scratch for the IoT era. “OS 2 delivered the foundation; OS 3 perfects the experience. It’s completely redesigned; simple, clean, and sophisticated. Add in remarkably fast deployment of any sized project, and top it off with the best hardware in the business. Why use anything else?” says Michael Short, Global Residential Marketing Manager for Crestron. The new interface platform is attractive and navigation around inside is smooth and should feel more familiar to customers used to the interfaces used on their smartphones and tablets. New features include more intuitive page designs, more dynamic room controls and icons and support for multiple homes, favourites, custom access and room image customisation. As with Pyng, all the programming is done through an app, making installation faster and achievable by more members of the team. Crestron Home becomes fully available this Spring. There is no doubt this new system offers a serious upgrade from Pyng; it’s attractive, fast and intuitive, however some Crestron installers, programmers in particular, will still be asking where it leaves their long acquired and hard-won skills. Crestron argues this is an ‘as well as’, not ‘instead of’ solution, so when the customer wants the full Crestron treatment only available through a skilled programmer, that side of the company also has a strong road map planned out. The 3-Series control suite is receiving a standardsbased HTML 5 programming environment in 2019, and will continue to receive other major updates. Crestron has also been highlighting its Performance UI which in particular delivers impressive performance on the TSR-310 remote within the new Crestron Home system.

The Crestron Performance UI is a user experience designed exclusively for the Crestron TSR-310 handheld touch screen remote. It integrates natively within the Crestron Home operating system to give integrators the power to deliver user experiences never seen before in a handheld remote, says its creator. And it takes practically no time to deploy. Crestron says the Performance UI transforms and elevates standard UI actions with smooth, stunning transitions, animations, and icons. Media with TV presets, lighting, shades, room switching, and climate control are all integrated, along with quick actions and voice command capability. And there’s myCrestron Favourites for everyone. Other Crestron introductions include the new DINTHSTAT DIN Rail mountable thermostat and Professional Installation Cabinet which combine to provide cleaner more professional installations. Flush or surface mounted in the cabinet, the DIN-THSTAT provides three-stage heating and cooling, support for three independent remote sensor inputs, a full colour LCD display, and flexible Cresnet communications. The cabinet is available in three sizes and can contain up to 10 thermostats. Controls are exposed for easy access and a service rail is provided for power supplies. There is also a new addition to the DM NVX family, the DM-NVX-E30(C) and DM-NVX-D30(C) are encode or decode only units that support HDMI connectivity and analogue audio. Compatible with all other DM NVX products, they deliver additional flexibility for basic endpoints when only video and audio are needed. Crestron says they deliver flawless video with pixel perfect processing and PoE+ support. The fan can switch off when not in use (ideal for bedrooms) and the products support the highest quality formats; 4K60, 4:4:4, HDR and use standard switches and CAT5e cabling. Crestron has also underlined its Apple TV, Siri and HomeKit integration. The move will bring IP control of Apple TV, including voice commands via the TSR-310 touch screen remote control, and support in the Crestron Home operating system and SIMPL. RTI’s recent roll outs have included the new T4X flagship remote control. The unit offers a customisable interface via its high-res capacitive LCD touch-screen and includes some hard controls too. The T4X also has dual-RF and Wi-Fi, grip sensors and ‘instant on’ accelerometer. Perhaps more crucially, the company offers the KA8 or KA11 for whole house control in 8in and 11in screens respectively. Both have a customisable touch-sensitive widescreen display and can be wall- or stand-mounted. Automatic screen-brightness and backlight adjustment are included as is built-in gigabit Ethernet with PoE and dual-band Wi-Fi which delivers video intercom use and IP security camera monitoring. The resurgence of the dedicated controller has been a theme with many companies and it’s certainly the case here that RTI is backing itself when offering something unique that nondedicated tablets and phones just can’t deliver. RTI is distributed in the UK by Invision. Savant is another platform that has been busy of late, unveiling compatibility between its control platform and Resideo’s Honeywell Home T Series Smart Thermostats. This cloud-to-cloud integration delivers intuitive operation, including voice control via Savant’s touchscreen Pro Remote and Pro 8 app, says the maker. Homeowners with a Honeywell Home T5, T6, T9 or T10 PRO Smart Thermostat from spin off brand, Resideo, can simply say ‘I’m hot’ or ‘I’m cold’ into the Savant Pro Remote to trigger a two-degree adjustment of the temperature setting. Users can also integrate climate adjustment as
part of the Savant Scene engine, giving them one-touch or voice command access to instant comfort. When combined with Savant Energy, users will have access to energy usage data, enabling them to combine lifestyle features with efficiency. “It is especially meaningful to builders and custom integrators that two innovation leaders in the smart home industry have come together to bring elegant, intuitive climate control functionality to consumers,” says Craig Spinner, VP of Business Development at Savant. “We are thrilled to be able to showcase this functionality.” “Our ‘Works with Honeywell Home’ program features more than 3,000 companies, and helps homeowners achieve seamless comfort and control,” adds Scott Harkins, Vice President and General Manager, Connected Home, Resideo. “Our latest integration with Savant offers consumers yet another way to integrate our products and technologies into their home’s ecosystems and makes it easy for them to use those systems to achieve a smart and simplified home.” These features will become available early Q2, 2019. Savant has also announced updates to Studio, the company’s iPad-based quick configuration tool for integrators. The accessibility and portability of a tabletbased solution such as Savant Studio is designed to increase productivity by enabling junior techs to manage S2 host-based system configuration, freeing senior technicians to address more complex assignments in the field. For the Savant S2 host platform, Studio now features a Smart Behaviors Editor, enabling integrators to create customised workflows that improve configuration efficiency. Examples include the capability to automatically raise/lower a motorised lift when a TV is powered on/off, or creating an audible and/or visual alert when the doorbell has been pressed. Working in conjunction with Savant’s cloud-based central management portal (SCM), user preferences such as Savant Scenes, customized Savant Pro App photos and other Studio configuration parameters can all be stored in the cloud for fast, easy access. Savant Studio also supports a new feature enabling the S2 host to create a secure, wireless connection to the Savant Pro Remote and other wireless devices without requiring access to the client’s Wi-Fi network, a feature often requested by Savant integrators. “Long considered the premium automation and control solution for the luxury residential market, Savant is now more accessible than ever before to a broader range of smart home consumers through the introduction of our S2 host and Savant Studio,” says CEO Robert Madonna. “We believe that Studio is as significant an integration tool as Savant’s introduction of Blueprint over a decade ago.” The new version of Savant Studio also adds more third-party device integrations, including door locks, IP control of Samsung displays that require an encrypted registration process, and more. The new Alert Center provides a useful checklist of items needed to complete the Savant configuration, to make the installation process more efficient. The Alert Center notifies integrators of items required to complete the system, such as entering IDs for devices or connections that may prevent an audio or video path from functioning correctly. The company argues that Savant Studio, working in conjunction with Savant Central Management represents a critical opportunity for a broad range of integrators to modernise their business practices by efficiently creating scalable programming while developing auditing practices for field service, employee access and system/ software versions across all installations. All new Savant Studio features are available now.

Control4 wants end users to be able tweak their system via its When >> Then Automation platform
Control4 recent developments have included the introduction of the expanded video intercom experience, via Intercom Anywhere. Using the Control4 Door Station and the Intercom Anywhere App, homeowners can talk with whoever is at their door with video and audio and also control other actions such as unlocking the door, turning on exterior lights, sounding a siren or opening a garage door. Control4 is also keen of late to underline its commitment to being an inclusive platform pointing to its compatibility with communication protocols such as Wi-Fi, Serial, IP, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Infrared, and now, KNX. With its own products and native import for KNX devices from Basalte, CJC Systems, Ekinex, Gira, Jung, Tense, and Vitrium, Control4 has added more choice of keypads, lighting, HVAC, blinds and rollers, and bus management products. Another company who is pushing the idea of more power for the home owner to create their own scenes, Control4 underlines its When >> Then Automation platform, which combines professional installation and design with home owner customisation; using the web interface and a 4Sight subscription, homeowners can now adjust the voice scenes, lighting schedules, push notifications and playlists in their system without calling up their dealer. Now dealers might argue they don’t necessarily want home owners to be able to set scenes, as that is their job, however the maker argues that the system is designed to allow users to make only minor adjustments and so unburdens dealers from having to make the small customisations which even if done remotely can eat into time, and in turn, profit. Just over a year since Control4 acquired Ihiji, the firm announced at ISE that it had purchased Switzerlandbased NEEO, the creators of a smart home remote control distributed by One AV in the UK. This distribution agreement has ceased for the simple reason that the NEEO platform and team will be absorbed into the Control4 world and will be focused on the
company improving its dedicated controller and interface designs. Those who currently own the NEEO product will be guaranteed 24 months of support and Control4 has promised to offer an upgrade path to existing owners, although it’s not yet clear what that might look like. Control4 is keen to exploit the knowhow within the NEEO set up to develop touch panels, remote controls, keypads, and similar devices which are a little more modern than its current line-up. It’s an important part of Control4’s strategy, as the firm will be increasingly facing competition from the large consumer electronic firms, such as Amazon and Google with the company’s Senior Vice President of Products & Services, Charlie Kindel, having come from the former. NEEO’s founder Raphael Oberholzer will report directly to Charlie in order to create Control4’s next generation of products. “Raphael built a world-class customer-centric product team with proven strengths in industrial design, product development, and user experience. We’re keen to add NEEO’s unique expertise and award-winning Swiss design ethic to enhance our plans for reimagining the way homeowners interact with their Control4 systems,” says Martin Plaehn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Control4.

How can IMAX Enhanced make home cinema better? Ion Smith of CEDIA member, Cyberhomes, looks at the future of IMAX Enhanced in the home IMAX is renowned for being, arguably, the best cinema experience at the local multiplex with its giant screens, improved audio and alternative aspect ratios. IMAX Enhanced aims to bring that premium experience to the home cinema and media room environment. We think it has great potential in the CI space, providing a fantastic opportunity for our businesses to engage with existing and new customers. Launched late last year, IMAX Enhanced is both a new licensing and certification program for home entertainment equipment.
Certification, content and optimisation
Cyberhomes delivered a technically excellent home cinema, securing first place in the Best Home Cinema £120,000 £340,000 category at the EMEA 2018 CEDIA Awards
The IMAX brand is the ‘go to’ for those looking for premium entertainment experiences. To qualify and carry the IMAX Enhanced logo, the highest-end TVs, sound bars, AV receivers must meet carefully-prescribed performance requirements established by IMAX, DTS and Hollywood’s leading colour experts to create a consistent and higher bar for image and sound specs on premium devices. By marking home cinema equipment with the IMAX Enhanced logo, IMAX is adding its stamp of approval to what it considers to be the best performing AV products. The IMAX Enhanced logo, already starting to appear on some 4K Blu-Ray disks, means that the content has an expanded aspect ratio and immersive sound (other immersive sound formats like DTS:X and, more commonly, Dolby Atmos are already featured on many Ultra HD BluRays; and DTS:X is the core codec behind the immersive sound format used in IMAX Enhanced). IMAX digitally re-mastered content for the home environment will, it is claimed, provide the sharpest 4K HDR images and powerful, immersive sound as the filmmaker intended. IMAX is designing an ‘IMAX Mode’ for the enhanced devices that will be meticulously calibrated to play digitally re-mastered content to deliver the best viewing and listening experience on that device. This advanced process accurately reduces noise and grain under the filmmaker’s guidance to best optimise the content for a much higher quality, higher brightness 4K HDR display format.
Without this technology, high-dynamic range content can sometimes look worse than what was originally seen and intended by the filmmaker due to excessive noise and grain in the film. How similar is IMAX Enhanced to the multiplex cinema experience? The majority of films in IMAX cinemas use the 1.90:1 aspect ratio, which also works well in the home because with 1.90:1, there is only a very small amount of letterboxing on a 16:9 (1.78) display. At most, it will fill the 1.78:1 TV screen, eliminating letterboxing entirely. This is likely to drive a shift from 2.35:1 to 16:9 ratio projection screens in home cinemas — something that Cyberhomes has been advocating for some time, especially when motorised masking is not installed. For optimal playback of IMAX Enhanced content, the recommended speaker layout for an IMAX Enhanced system is 7.2.4 with seven main speakers (left, centre, right, left surround, right surround, left rear and right rear), two subwoofers and four height speakers. 5.1.4 is the minimum layout for IMAX Enhanced AV receivers and processors. The AV industry has seen many standards and formats come and go over the years. Some have succeeded, others like HD-DVD, and, to some extent, 3D, have paled into obscurity. Timing wise, there are more 4K HDR displays than ever, making it a good time to release a standard that capitalises on IMAX’s system of high-resolution cameras and film formats that use bigger, brighter, higher resolution projectors boasting higher contrast. IMAX Enhanced TVs and projectors must be 4K HDR, and to get IMAX Enhanced audio, the AV processor must carry the IMAX Enhanced logo. It is aimed at home cinema enthusiasts that are looking for the premium entertainment experience in the home and are prepared to commit the budget necessary to achieve it. That gives installation businesses an upgrade option, where existing home cinema clients need to consider replacing their equipment with IMAX Enhancedcertified alternatives. Not all of this needs to be done at once to see an improvement. For example, if a customer already has a DTS:X capable AV processor and immersive speaker array in their media room, they may choose initially to just replace the display to get the IMAX Enhanced image experience. As with most technologies and formats, content is king. If IMAX Enhanced isn’t supported by filmmakers and the studios then it is unlikely to achieve the necessary momentum to be supported by all the equipment manufacturers or justify the extra investment for a small number of optimised movies (brands like Sony, AudioControl, Denon, Integra, Marantz, Trinnov and others have already announced their support). The next 12 to 18 months will surely see it either sink or swim; but we certainly support endeavours to improve the potential of the home cinema experience for our customers. Essential Install | Security
Security focus
EI takes a look at a few of the companies and products offering installers enhanced security options. The ELAN automation platform has been improving its security offering of late with surveillance configuration and recording options. Users can set a recording schedule and choose between constant, motion only, or custom modes. The custom mode schedule can be created and quickly applied to all channels, and all users can set, clear and customise motion area and sensitivity with motion-only and weighted recording support. It’s also possible to employ a privacy mask password protection on a per-user basis with up to four regions per camera, and add link recording and privacy options to system mode. Getting false alerts is of course one of the main reasons they get ignored, so as the system can tell the difference between a tree waving in the wind and a person, this is a definite step forward. Additionally, dealers can now optionally set static IP addresses for NVR and cameras in the discover tab with a new preview window when adding cameras, to assist with identification and renaming. The update also offers improved surveillance footage timeline loading, and progressive loading for more responsive local and remote playback. Intellivision video analytics are also built into the next generation of ELAN dome cameras, plus the upcoming ELAN Intelligent Video Doorbell, while ELAN 8.3 system software upgrade enables the video analytics in the line of ELAN dome cameras already in the market. At the heart of the analytics is object classification and motion detection, which accurately distinguishes people from moving objects such as a passing car. This all but eliminates false alerts that cause many users of doorbell cameras to turn them off. The analytics also enables defining a ‘Survey Area’ to trigger alerts whenever something relevant moves into a pre-defined area. This can be combined with object classification and advanced motion detection, for example
to trigger an alert for anything that enters the Survey Area but only for a person elsewhere in the camera’s view. One of the distributors for ELAN in the UK, Aldous Systems also offers access to the Visualint brand which has recently introduced virtual sensors that also broaden the scope of what a surveillance system can do. Traditional surveillance captures still images or video footage of events while they happen. Those systems rely on physical landmarks like walls, windows, or doors to provide alerts. Visualint creates custom virtual sensors via seven motionbased analytic rules. Using these rules, Visualint can proactively deter potential events or unwanted guests and reduce false positives by up to 97%, so you’ll save time and effort for the work that really matters. Using size-based object tracking instead of lightbased motion, Visualint analytics are set up to create precise events using trigger variables, so each camera can distinguish between a small dog, a human, and a vehicle. Trade supplier Alltrade has expanded its portfolio of CCTV and security equipment for 2019 to cater for rising demand. Alltrade’s CCTV range now spans entry-level analogue cameras to fully smart building integrated AI digital surveillance systems, backed-up by Alltrade’s commitment to free local training and technical support. “The 2018 AMA Research report revealed a 5% year on year growth in the UK’s electronic security market,” comments Paul Tanner, Business Development Manager at Alltrade. “The market is likely to be worth over £2.5bn in the UK in 2019 with CCTV and surveillance security counting for well over half of that revenue. Our security, surveillance and access control range now incorporates products from leading brands, including MaxxOne, Hikvision and ELAN, with a price and sophistication level to suit every project budget.”

Makers like Dahua have been pushing the boundaries of lowlight performance
Having recently taken on ELAN, Alltrade has unveiled a full portfolio of ELAN security products. Alltrade argues ELAN’s smart security products integrate seamlessly into the ELAN ecosystem offering installers a simple and compelling route to increase project revenue. Alltrade offers free structured ELAN training at all six of its trade counters across the south. Alltrade also offers access to Hikvision, one of the world’s largest CCTV companies. With products ranging from basic 2MP CMOS bullet cameras to the brand’s flagship PanoVu 360° cameras and 128 channel NVRs, Alltrade stocks a full commercial and residential CCTV portfolio. The Hikvision offering is supported by a huge range of installation accessories. Alltrade’s budget-friendly MaxxOne security products are suited for entry-level CCTV and stand-alone alarm system installs. The range encompasses a diverse portfolio of cameras, DVR/NVRs and CCTV test and installation equipment, along with the MaxxOne Kite Smart Alarm System, an affordable, wireless, appcontrolled intruder alarm that is simple to install. Distributor Habitech highlights new options from Dahua with a new API and Control4 Driver for the brand’s cameras. Habitech has been working exclusively with Dahua and driver creator Janus Technology to create a useful working API and a true two-way Control4 driver controlling view type (what camera is displayed), playback and alarm out over IP. These developments offer smooth integration of Dahua security infrastructure with Control4 systems and more versatile control and monitoring from remote locations via IP. The API is now available for Dahua’s 5000 S2 series eight, 16, 24 channel NVRs from Habitech. Also new is the Dahua DH-IPC-HDBW4239R-ASE Starlight Dome Network Camera, which offers strong performance at a competitive price. Armed with upgraded H.265 encoding technology for efficient video compression and storage, the DH-IPCHDBW4239R-ASE features starlight and full-colour starlight capability for low-light surveillance employing smart IR technology and intelligent image analysis techniques to set a new level of performance for Dahua’s entry range.
The DH-IPC-HDBW4239R-ASE will deliver 1080P colour views in low light conditions over one lux, and monochrome views down to 0.006 lux. Built-in IVS algorithms monitor a scene for tripwire violations, intrusion detection, and abandoned or missing objects, supported by face detection and tamper detection triggers. The 3.6mm lens provides detection at a range of up to 53m and recognition at 11m, while the optional 6mm lens offers detection at 83m and recognition at 17m. True Wide Dynamic Range (WDR 120 dB) capability optimises the detail resolution of both bright and dark areas of a scene simultaneously to provide the best video quality. The camera’s proprietary ePoE technology delivers long-range duplex transmission and PoE over a maximum range of 800m at up to 10Mbps, or 300m at 100Mbps via Cat 5 or coaxial cable media, greatly simplifying wiring and legacy system upgrades. Built with a ±30% input voltage tolerance, a 6KV lightning rating, IP67 and IK10 weather and impact protection, the capable DH-IPC-HDBW4239R-ASE is ready for the most unforgiving environments. Both the two-Megapixel Full HD ultra-low light Starlight Dahua ANPR cameras use specialised LPR algorithms to support plate cut-out, overview snapshot and video recording features, and are IP66 weatherprotected. The ITC237-PW1A has a powerful 4-8mm motorised lens and IR light, ideal for monitor ANPR distance at 4-8m; the ITC237-PU1A uses 10.5-42mm lens and IR light, ideal for long distance ANPR as far as 40m. Thermal cameras can be bulky and expensive, but Dahua’s DH-TPC-BF2120 is designed to challenge that, providing optimum day/night detection and advanced analytics at an entry-level price. Its advanced IP network camera design integrates one thermal camera for monitoring in total darkness and one optical camera with Sony Starvis sensor to acquire high resolution colour images. IR LED illumination turns on at night to ensure no detail is missed in any lighting condition, while intelligent analytics include ROI, IVS, PIP, image fusion plus fire hazard warning and alarm message delivery. Mini-sized and durable, the DH-TPC-BF2120 measures 24 x 9 x 9 cm and its IP67 rating offers protection against water, dust and other contaminants.

These also come in black – LILIN has created black finishes as standard due to popular demand
Bespoke Telecoms offers access and installation support for the Panasonic range of solutions and has recently added a neat extension using the Panasonic Mobile Softphone, a brand phone application that brings audio and visual communication together in a mobile device and connects it to the main comms and security systems of the home. The feature combines a home telephone system with an iPhone or Android smart phone, to leverage Wi-Fi and 3G/4G networks when away. Not only can home phone calls be taken when away, but when used in conjunction with a bespoke MKII Gate Entry Panel, or the range of 2N IP Entry Panels, mobile users can interact with and control these home security features. Users can see who is at the gate/door, talk with them, control their access, and instruct visitors appropriately. The Panasonic KXNS700 system supports electro-maglock release from the same connection. Trade supplier Invision UK has built a strong relationship with the LILIN brand which has made strong efforts to appeal direct to smart-building focused installers. Some recent highlights include the less than 250g and no bigger than a tennis ball MR6822, argued to be the smallest IR dome camera in the world. Despite compact dimensions, it still delivers full HD 1080p resolution at 30fps, a high and wide dynamic range for optimum image quality, and integrated infrared illumination to provide night vision to a distance of 30m and automatic tamper detection. A really useful solution when small or awkward spaces are the only options for mounting or simply that the camera needs to be discrete. The mini PTZ PZD6422X3 is a compact IP dome camera (just 12cm circumference by 11cm height) but has 3x optical zoom, giving a focal length from 3.35mm to 10.05mm. This camera can also stream 1080p highdefinition video at up to 30fps, and its high dynamic range ensures strong reproduction of both highlights and shadows with no smearing or pixelation. It can operate equally effectively both day and night, and its 360° rotation means users can position the camera to give a perfect field of vision. Its pan/tilt/zoom functionality allows the field of view to be adjusted both rapidly and accurately – and the LilinViewer app (iOS and Android) makes remote viewing (both live and playback) simple. The ZSR8122LPR is an outdoor varifocal IP camera that provides full HD resolution at 60fps in more challenging environments. Combining WDR, 3D noise reduction, intelligent image signal processing, and built-in SenseUp+ technology, the camera delivers strong images in extreme low-light without any motion blur. With an IP66 rating, it is designed to prevent ingress from rain and dust and to deliver a perfect performance in the most demanding conditions.
LILIN also recently announced the expansion of its popular 5 Series range of 4K recorders. The 5104E, 5208E and 5416E are four, eight and 16 channel NVR models featuring built-in PoE switches to make installation and configuration quicker and easier. These Plug-and-Play PoE NVR’s are capable of configuring connected cameras’ IP addresses automatically, saving the installer time and installation cost. All 5 Series PoE NVRs offer full 4K recording resolution across all channels and are capable of recording up to 60fps on a single 1080p channel. With a sleek, all in one design, finished in high gloss black with no front panel controls, this range of NVRs is well suited to the CI. LILIN has also introduced a new facial recognition solution, which is able to identify a person from a photo database of up to 1,000 faces. This can then trigger a variety of remote actions; for example opening a door or turning on a light, based on customisable lists, which can be integrated into a home automation platform. The NAV2036F Facial Recognition Server is a 16 channel unit, four of which can be designated as facial recognition cameras with a recording resolution of up to 4K. The NAV2036F supports Navigator features including SmartSearch and multi-channel playback and backup. This server is housed in a 2U, 19in NVR style chassis with no front panel controls to fit in with any installation. LILIN has also been working on providing deep integration with automation platforms. In the past, the end user would often only be able to view single, low resolution video streams – LILIN wanted to go further. Steve Liddiard, CEO of LILIN UK, says, “We have designed drivers that give the client full control of their surveillance system – they could view a live feed of all cameras in high resolution, change views and control playback including freeze frame, fast forward and rewind, all from the remote or panel. Essentially, everything that the user could do at the NVR, the client can do through their home automation system, including controlling their PTZ cameras! “Furthermore, all LILIN products are SDDP; ensuring that any LILIN firmware updates will not result in incompatibility with the automation system or require additional, continual configuration. This allows us to provide a secure solution that is ‘future-proof’ – the client can easily expand the system if needed, assured that there will be no compatibility issues.” In another initiative, Steve explains, “Our recent partnership with Deloitte Taiwan aims to address the cyber security concerns that are currently prevalent in the industry. Deloitte are assisting LILIN in identifying possible network vulnerabilities, and work with us to prevent any damaging cyber security attacks for our customers with their rapid detection and response strategy. LILIN take cyber security concerns seriously and we are dedicated to developing this partnership to protect our customers’ systems.” A further step LILIN has taken is to provide black chassis cameras as standard at the request of dealers.

A cavalcade of carefully crafted kit
A swish new blind solution from Lutron
Lutron launches Palladiom shades Palladiom is Lutron’s all-new shading solution, which its creator says features highly-crafted exposed hardware for a sophisticated look. This aesthetically-driven system has been designed to offer industry-leading shading performance and reliability, plus integration with Lutron products and other third-party systems, creating an immersive light, blind and temperature control experience. Palladiom is made for exposed applications, to be installed without a fascia, pocket, or recess and to look attractive. Created to deliver very quiet performance, the unibody aluminium brackets are hand-finished and are robust enough to support a 3.6m by 3.6m blind with a slim 76mm profile. They’re also available in a variety of finishes to allow them to blend into any architectural style. The bracket itself conceals all wiring, programming buttons, and LED indicator lights with a rotating ring design. Lutron has also added the Palladiom Bottom Rail using a new method of clamping onto the fabric – no matter the fabric thickness – to ensure that the hembar will always sit flat and perpendicular to the fabric plane. The subtle curve along the hembar face matches the roll diameter at the top of the blind, so that when the blind is fully open, the hembar disappears into the negative space behind the blind. Palladiom boasts symmetrical 13mm light gaps, and if gaps need to be larger to accommodate certain blind configurations, a finished bearing sleeve ensures a complete and attractive look. Ideal for mounting on or above a window frame, the end bracket showcases each hand-finished surface. Exactingly proportionate, the arm and foot of this bracket have an equivalent depth, designed to offer a balance and grace. End brackets can be mounted to the wall or to the ceiling. Centre brackets can be mounted to the wall or to the ceiling, whilst the jamb bracket is designed to sit inside a window frame. Lutron 0207 702 0657, lutron.com

Light Walls is a new easy fit way to finish a room with pleasing aesthetic results
Light Walls launches From the same team behind the Display Technologies brand, Light Walls is a new concept which aims to make it easy for dealers to obtain attractive fabric solutions using backlit panels; a strong look in living spaces, media rooms and cinemas. The plan is to sell direct from the maker to installers to ensure that the best support is delivered, but also make a solution that would be competitive with getting in a typical fabric company to finish a room. The concept’s creators say now the dealer can do it themselves quickly and easily and with strong profit margins. The concept is designed to follow a logical design process and be easy to install with its ‘push to fit’ fabric system. Installers mount the frames on clips and then push the edge of the fabric into a channel. The easy to install system also means they can be removed for service, cleaning or to swap to something different. To create a solution using the system, installers specify the room size, select the desired panel layout, choose the colour pallet needed and then select options for the LEDs. The LEDs can be used to create many different moods to match the home or more formal spaces such as offices. The concept can be supplied with advanced applied finishes that accurately simulate almost any material. The shape of the panels defines the architectural feel of the space. Contemporary to classical, flat to layered, there are loads of choices. Light Walls lightwalls.co.uk
Focal’s powerful super-sub
Focal has introduced an i-wall sub and amp pairing
With its 100 Series range of integrated equipment, Focal is continuing its overtures to installers with the addition of two new products. For the first time it’s including a built-in sub and matching amp in its line-up: the 100 IWSUB8, along with its dedicated amplifier, the 100 IWSUB8. This new bass enclosure, specially designed for in-wall mounting along with an amplifier, have been created to deliver a unique ambiance and sound coverage, blending in with the chosen setting, says the maker. The products are the ideal add-on to a 100 Series audio-video setup, also providing strong value for money. Including an 8in polyglass speaker driver and a front vent with a streamlined inner frame to guarantee no-noise operation, the Focal 100 IWSUB8 high-power passive bass-reflex subwoofer can be installed during pre-construction of the walls using 16in OC studs. The sub has a shallow in-wall depth (33m/8in), a high-quality bass reproduction (bass cut-off frequency: 30Hz to -6db) and is covered with a low-profile magnetic grille, which can be painted. The 100 IWSUB8 has been developed as a dedicated easy-install amplifier specially tailored for this subwoofer, that can also be rack-mounted if desired. Capable of powering up to two subwoofers connected in parallel, it delivers 200W of power over 4ohms. Focal is available in the UK from OneAV distribution. Pro-Ject offers an invite to paradise city
Sweet Child O’ Mine, Pro-Ject is very proud of its new baby, a Guns N’ Roses turntable
Pro-Ject Audio Systems has announced a new Artist Series special edition turntable collaboration with one of the world’s most talked about bands. After successful collaborations with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Parov Stelar, the company is delighted to announce a new turntable design in partnership with Guns N’ Roses. The company argues that whether you grew up with their music or not, it’s impossible not to feel their pure energy and emotion when you hear their instantly recognisable musical style. The virtuosity and the honesty of their performances survives thanks to the industry-leading analogue recording and production techniques used at the time they released some of their most popular work. So, what better way to experience their iconic sound than with an award-winning turntable that’s designed in their honour? A real Hi-Fi talking point for many a client. The Guns N’ Roses Record Player is based on the Pro-Ject Essential III A turntable. With audiophile components, including the Ortofon OM 10 elliptical cartridge, the stable belt drive system topped with a precision diamond-cut aluminium pulley, and the 8.6in aluminium tonearm. For the first time, Pro-Ject has directly printed artwork onto the Acryl-IT E platter. The Guns N’ Roses logo fills the entire 12in platter surface. The end result is a yellow hue that glows above the gloss black MDF plinth, which itself features a small logo underneath the tonearm’s rest position – nice touch this one. Finished with a clear dust cover and terminated with high-quality Connect-IT E RCA cables, the turntable is ready to connect to any Hi-Fi system with a phono stage connection. The player retails at £429.00 and is available to installers via distributor Henley Audio. Henley Audio 01235 511 166, henleyaudio.co.uk

Russound parades its new streamers Russound, distributed by Connected Distribution, is introducing the compact MBX-AMP amplifier and MBX-PRE pre-amplifier, the first of a new generation of MBX streaming audio products designed to deliver networked music, internet radio, streaming via Bluetooth, Chromecast or Airplay and local TV sound, to the customer’s room or multiroom installation. The 50W-per-channel MBX-AMP acts as the cornerstone of a distributed audio system, whether centralised or decentralised, for installers who need to offer the most up-to-date streaming solutions to their clients, says the maker. Its range of connectivity options and ability to reproduce high-resolution audio are other pluses. Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet connections allow for quick, reliable streaming of all network stored music, plus Tidal and Deezer at up to 24bit/192kHz high resolution. In addition to TuneIn, vTuner, UPnP, DLNA and Apple AirPlay, the MBX features built-in Chromecast to play any music (Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.). With integrated Chromecast, the MBX is compatible with Google Home and can be voice controlled via Google Assistant. Both products can be controlled using the MyRussound app for iOS and Android and are compatible with the Russound XTS touchscreen. External audio sources can be connected via an optical digital or analogue input, plus a USB socket makes provision for locally stored music to be played. Each audio input can be distributed to the other Analogue line level and optical digital outputs permit connection to external amplifiers and distributed audio systems. The MBX-AMP also features a dedicated subwoofer output. The 21cm x 18cm x 4.5cm MBX-AMP is slim enough to wall mount behind a TV and attractive enough to have on display in a room. The MBX also features an optical digital input to which the TV’s audio output can be connected. The companion MBX-PRE is a preamplifier version of MBX-AMP. It has all the same capabilities, but is designed solely to feed any external amplifier or distributed audio system. Connected Distribution 01242 511 133 connecteddistribution.com
A new Concept From Q Acoustics
Q Acoustics is pushing the bang for buck credentials of its new speaker
Building on the flagship model (Concept 500) the company has developed the Concept 300 (£2,999/$4,499). Harbouring leading edge acoustic and speaker stand technology, this design is billed as company’s most progressive loudspeaker yet, refining and advancing all the technological highlights of its bigger brother, while boasting a statement interior-friendly design. As a flagship stand-mount model, the Concept 300 sports a premium design and finish to match its audio innovations. Combining real wood veneers with multiple gloss lacquer, the dual finish is created to fit into any interior space, while the introduction of a new silver and ebony finish joins the gloss black/rosewood and gloss white/oak models. The Concept 300 employs the same Dual Gelcore cabinet construction and internal P2P (Point-to-Point) bracing found in the Concept 500. Comprising of three individual layers, separated by a non-setting gel, this bespoke adhesive dissipates high-frequency vibrations, generated by the moving drivers, into heat to maintain focus. The Tensegrity tripod stand reduces further the transmission of vibrations and provides a stable support. Q Acoustics’ engineers have also developed the Isolation base plate system that is integrated into the bottom of the Concept 300 cabinet. Not only does it securely anchor the cabinet to the stand, but provides a flexible suspension system. The Concept 300 features the wide-dispersion high-frequency driver and isolating mount developed for Concept 500. This design protects the tweeter from sending or receiving unwanted vibrations and allows it to be mounted close to the mid-bass driver, enhancing integration with the larger mid/bass driver and improving timing. The Q Acoustics Concept 300 dual finish model (including Tensegrity stand) comes in three finishes: Gloss Black/Rosewood, Gloss White/Oak and Silver/Ebony and is available from March 2019 priced £2,999 / €3,749 / $4,499 (SRP). Lithe Audio adds bathroom Wi-Fi speakers Lithe has added a wet room version of its in-ceiling speaker
Lithe Audio, has added a bathroom version of its Wi-Fi ceiling speakers, providing an all-in-one solution for multi-room music streaming. With the amplifier and Wi-Fi built-in, there’s no need for speaker cables or servers, making the IP44 speakers easy to install. They are also AirPlay-certified and come with a dedicated App that has Spotify Connect, Deezer, TIDAL and vTuner radio already enabled. The Lithe Audio Wi-Fi ceiling speakers enable streaming from any audio service to a single, a selection or up to 30 speakers at once for a full multi-room audio experience. The App saves a user’s settings for individual zones or can deliver all zone party mode. At £429.99 for a pair of IP44 speakers with built-in 60W RMS amplifier and WiFi, bang for buck ratio is strong. All the speakers, including the new bathroom version, offer a full integrated solution, simply connect power from a lighting circuit, link to a smart device via the App, and the music can begin. Users can switch between mono and stereo output and have varying volume levels in each room whilst playing multi-room audio. Designed by Lithe Audio’s team of specialist home electronic product designers, the frameless speakers are designed to ‘disappear’ into the ceiling, only protruding 3mm. The magnetic grille covers can be removed for cleaning or for replacement with a different coloured finish. The grilles can be painted to match the ceiling for a barely-there look. Meridian’s inside knowledge With a mounting depth of 100mm, both the DSP640.2 and DSP520.2 loudspeakers are discrete yet impactful
Meridian Audio has released details of two new in-wall loudspeakers added to the architectural loudspeaker line-up, enabling integrators to deliver the Meridian experience for media room and home cinemas. Characterised by their high SPL’s and strong bass performance capabilities, the DSP640.2 and DSP520.2 are the first to be powered by the new Meridian ‘CLASS-M’ DSP engine. The maker says that the double precision Aux filter improves resolution on low frequencies, and the built-in Dynamic bass protection technology maximises bass extension. Both models are also the first to integrate Meridian’s ‘Dynamic’ Hi-Res amplifiers. Each drive unit is driven by a pair of powerful, high bandwidth, ultra-HD amps for high-performance and complete control, exceeding the Hi-Res audio standard. The amplifier’s high mass toroidal transformer is electrically screened, potted, and optimised for the lowest possible mechanical noise, whilst post filter feedback delivers lower output noise and improved total harmonic distortion. This new feature is also intended to deliver greater control, accurate detail, and precise spatial resolution. The DSP640.2 model features eight power amplifiers delivering 100W per drive unit and L + R mode for high-power soundbar applications. It’s capable of delivering over 105dB over 4m, providing full range sound with bass extension down to 40Hz, together with Meridian’s on-board Enhanced Bass Alignment that aligns high, mid, and upper bass frequencies with the low bass for added clarity. Meridian’s Centre Elevation technology raises the perceived image location from an under-screen loudspeaker so that it appears to come from the centre of the screen. With a range of other enhancement technologies, Meridian says the DSP640.2 can be used as a full-range loudspeaker with no need for an additional subwoofer. The DSP520.2 boasts an all-new quad-amp DSP design with four amplifiers delivering 100W per drive unit. L+R mode technology ensures the true reproduction of all the audio present in a stereo recording when a single loudspeaker is used on its own, whilst delivering bass extension down to 50Hz for full range sound. The DSP520.2 features 1 x 140mm long throw bass driver and 1 x 85mm wide-range drivers for full-frequency response, maximum dispersion, and wide listening area. Meridian adds that the slim profile and frame system allows for easy installation and precise positioning, whilst the grille can be painted to blend in. Meridian 01480 445 678, meridian-audio.com

Faradite launches the ultimate cinema motion sensor at EI Live!
Iain Gordan, President of KNX UK, will be talking about what makes a system future-proof. Iain says, “As the first generation of smart buildings reach an age where users want to make changes and add new functionality, they are discovering how expensive it can be if you don’t plan for the future from the outset.” Find out how to future proof from Iain. Enno Vandermeer the Founder of Roon Labs will be talking about the wonderful world of high-quality music streaming. With products that span the software and hardware part of this equation, Enno is perfectly placed to explain how to get the best from high-performance digital music and multi-room systems. Hugo Fitzjohn, Educations Manager at Meridian Audio will be explaining how to make multi-room audio more profitable. The talk asks questions such as ‘why install mediocre multi-room all over the house, when often it’s only really a few crucial high-quality areas that clients want?’ Wayne Hyde, Technical Director, CAVD will present a talk entitled: ‘Stay on top of your game – audio tips to master an installation.’ This interactive Q&A style session will suit veterans and engineers that are new to the industry. The idea is to address some of the common audio mistakes seen in residential CI from the most basic installations through to high-end projects. Wayne is keen to share tips to help installers avoid mistakes and deliver a better sound. Aimed specifically at electrical professionals entering the smart building market, Darren Smith, the Electrical Contracting Associations’ (ECA) Digital Buildings Solutions Advisor, will offer a talk entitled ‘Ushering in the Smart Age’ explaining how manufacturers, software companies and entrepreneurs are developing and delivering new products and services for smart homes, buildings and cities, and exploring the opportunities that electrical professionals must seize to help ensure they stay relevant to their clients.
Pulse Cinemas will present a full Dolby Atmos cinema demonstration. The cinema will feature Paradigm, AudioControl, Screen Research and a Domino 4 UHD HDR projector from SIM2. Completing the picture will be an anamorphic super wide lens from Primasonic and adding the images will be Kaleidescape with a Strato 4K movie and content player. The room will also be fully treated with Vicoustic panels for absorption, diffusion and bass management. Pulse Cinemas is keen to showcase its best ever brand line up. The show will also offer the chance to learn more about ISoTek. Brand new to the Pulse Cinemas line up, this UK maker offers products that condition the power allowing products to perform at their best as well as providing vital protection from spikes or surges. Keith Martin, MD of IsoTek will be on hand to explain exactly how his products can take projects to the next level. Pulse will also be featuring products from the Lutron family including a live demo of the maker’s Sivoia QS Triathlon blinds. First time at the show, Faradite makes a big entrance with a world exclusive launch at the show of the company’s all black motion sensor aimed specifically at the home cinema market. Created from direct feedback from customers who wanted all the functionality of Faradite’s high-quality motion sensors, but in a more discrete package, the sensor is now available. The new black, volt free motion sensor blends completely into the background, helping projects achieve high levels of aesthetic performance whilst also delivering the functionality needed. Not only does the product melt into the background, it delivers all the connectivity needed in a top end cinema, being compatible with Control4, Lutron and Crestron lighting and automation systems. All sorts of clever activity can be triggered by the sensor such as controlling the lights, AV for set reactions and scenes based on presence and movement. The sensor can also close the cinema down should there be no movement detected for a set period of time. The sensor can also be used to boost the heating within the cinema whilst in use giving that extra bit of comfort while reducing the heating bill. Based on the already successful Motion Sensor 360 – Volt Free design, the product is billed as the ultimate home cinema motion detector. Check it and the company’s other products out on Stand 36.

Lithe Audio will introduce its unique Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speakers at EI Live!
Other new names at the show include Lithe Audio and Retrotouch on Stand 33. Lithe Audio is a really innovative UK brand that designs, manufactures and sells a broad range of high quality, innovative electrical products including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi based in-ceiling speakers. Sister company, Retrotouch, will be highlighting its attractive range of lighting and switches. Really worth checking out are the Lithe Audio Wi-Fi speakers, which deliver an easy to install way to up-grade a home’s AV for new build, renovation or retrofit projects. Placing the amplification and Wi-Fi connectivity inside the speaker delivers a true all in one solution, and they sound good too. The company also has an award-winning Bluetooth version of the speaker design. They are also AirPlay-certified, a first for an in-ceiling speaker. The speaker’s amp has Spotify Connect, Deezer, TIDAL and vTuner radio already enabled. An IP44 bathroom version is also available. With the speakers users can stream audio from any audio service to a single, a selection, or up to 30 speakers at once. The dedicated app will save settings for individual zones or play party mode (all speakers at once). For installation, simply connect power from the existing lighting circuit, link to any device via the App, and stream. Also on show will be Retrotouch’s new iotty Wi-Fi smart switches. These attractively-designed switches also use built-in Wi-Fi to enable lighting throughout a home or office to be controlled from anywhere in the building – or from anywhere with an internet connection. The switches integrate with other automated home features such as automatic garage doors and gates and

Rako will launch several new products at the show
The company will also reveal new modular push button wall plates with a clean contemporary design and all metal flush wall plates which are a collaboration between Rako and the company’s Indian distributor, Vinshek. Antiference (Stand 70) will highlight the Clear Flow range of networking devices with new arrivals for 2019 to include several new lines. One new arrival is the central controller (CF-GWPOE) which features a four port PoE switch and is installed at the heart of a Clear Flow system. It can manage groups of APs, bandwidth control and comes with a host of other advanced features for the next level of professional installation. Also now available are the Clear Switch Gb 48V PoE Ethernet switches that can send power and data to Clear Flow AIR, WAP & BEAM products. The range offers four and eight PoE port options (CF-POE4 & CF-POE8) and each model features two additional uplink/downlink passive ports. Other products on show this year in the HDMI distribution range are the all new HDMI scaler/splitter range allowing a 4K source such as SKY Q to split to combination of 4K and 1080p TV sets. AMINA (Stand 79) will be highlighting the prowess of its Edge3 product and will possibly be launching some new products at the show, you will have to come along to find out. The Edge3 has a slightly smaller form factor (300mm by 400mm) than others in the range and a more aggressive price position with an RRP of £500 ex VAT, making it a good choice for medium power commercial applications such as retail and hotel. Additionally, particularly where budget maybe an issue, the Edge3 will allow an invisible multi-room audio solution in the home to be extended into rooms where such a discreet solution may not previously have been considered an option. The Edge 3 is an efficient speaker with a sensitivity of 86dB 1m/2.83Vrms, a power
handling of 30W cont., 60W peak giving max SPL of 101dB. This specification has allowed Amina to create the price point for a high performance, invisible speaker. Penn Elcom (Stand 132) will focus on its support solution for the home automation sector including the slide and rotate racking which offers quick and complete access to tightly-stored enclosures, allowing users to easily slide the rack in and out and spin it in either direction. Simply screw the lockable base plate to a flat, solid surface and stability is ensured. The family offers 6U, 8U, 12U, 16U, 20U and 24U models. Wall bracket and rack shelves with magnetic faceplates for the newly released Sonos Amp product as well as models for all major other devices like Sky TV, Amazon Fire, Apple TV will also be on show – really neat products these ones. Indigo Distribution will be highlighting its new distribution partnership with one of the worlds largest speaker manufacturers Klipsch and will be showcasing their CI and commercial ranges. These two product ranges are available exclusively from Indigo in the UK and Ireland. Klipsch’s famous no-compromise approach in integrated speakers will be demonstrated at the show. When it comes to speakers, Indigo will also be featuring three other new loudspeaker brands, all with different applications. Krix Loudspeakers, which are available in the UK and Ireland for the first time, have a product offering that includes high-end in-wall, freestanding and two-channel options, as well as home-theatre solutions. Scandinavian brand Jamo crafts relevant products that look amazing in your home, are easy to use and sound fantastic. Finally, Cerasonar Invisible Loudspeakers, which doesn’t compromise on sound while still delivers the invisible, will also be showcased. Indigo’s premium control platform, Elan, will be demonstrated at the show by the Indigo team, with all the newest features and products including the stunning new 8 and 12in touchscreens, the revolutionary new door entry system, and the new security and advanced analytical features. The team will also demonstrate new programming techniques exclusive to indigo enabling installers to get the most out of installations, and benefit from Indigo’s experience with this brand. Additional brands such as Xantech IR solutions, and Furman power conditioning will also be at the show. Last but not least, Indigo will be exhibiting Aerohive, a commercial-grade networking brand that focuses on IT for custom installation. The technology is designed to be sophisticated yet straightforward, offering access points, switches, routers and management tools all focused towards custom installation. Meridian Audio (Stand 41) will be showing how its products, combined with solutions from its ‘Distributed By Meridian’ brands, can deliver high-quality experiences. Visitors will be able to find out about Meridian, Barco Residential, Display Technologies, and Cinema Acoustic Treatment Systems products, while also gaining an understanding of how Meridian can support integrators through its Design and Specification Service. Meridian will be showing its new In-Wall Loudspeakers, the DSP640.2 and DSP520.2. This new architectural loudspeaker line-up enables integrators to deliver the authentic, superior audio performance that customers want for their home cinema or media room installations. Characterised by their high SPL’s and strong bass performance capabilities, the DSP640.2 and DSP520.2 are the first to be powered by the new Meridian ‘CLASS-M’ DSP engine. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the growing 200 Series, including the 251 Powered Zone Controller, 218 Zone Controller, 271 Digital Theatre Controller, 258 Hi-Res Eight Channel Power Amplifier, and the recently launched 210 Streamer, which helps integrators meet client demand for reliable, high quality audio streaming throughout the home. The Meridian M6 Digital Active loudspeaker is a visually attractive loudspeaker and will also be on display.
Activated from the Digital Channel Selector switch, Meridian’s unique ‘mono’ mode technology sums signals from the left and right channels so that the M6’s signature sound can be achieved from just one single loudspeaker. The show also sees the coming together of two of the industry’s leading design specialists, Sinemas and designflow. In a unique collaboration, the two companies will launch their partnership to help integrators sell and deliver cinema rooms in the easiest possible way. By combining the sales tool Sinemas’ new Virtual Showroom has to offer with designflow’s design and documentation services, to deliver cinema build drawings, an integrator can now show a client a Virtual Reality (VR) cinema room that they can deliver in double quick time in the easiest and smoothest way possible. Launching officially at the show, SInemas’ new Virtual Showroom uses VR to show potential customers a selection of different cinema demo rooms. Sinemas’ VR goes a step further than others as it allows you to see what the VR headset is looking at on a nearby linked screen. As anyone who has used VR with clients will know, once the client puts the headset on, the conversation stops as you are unable to see what the client is seeing, but with SInemas linked screen technology, now the integrator can comment on what the client is seeing. The show also sees the official launch of designflow’s revamped pricing structure, as the company transitions from a project percentage based design fee to a price per drawing type. There is a completely revised price list and a supporting design fee calculator, which anyone can use to calculate design fees on a project, removing any doubt or questions about pricing. Also new for 2019 is designflow’s new sales book in A3 format. This book can be branded to suit any integrator and includes a sample project from beginning to end. The event also sees the return of free if you win proposals. Free if you win proposals gives anyone signing up for proposals during the two-day event, the opportunity to have the cost of proposals refunded against the design fee when the job is converted into a live project. Sinemas will also be offering a free VR headset to any new clients who sign up for a year to their new Virtual Showroom. Stand 1 for all of this.

The MA-421is also the first product to include the company’s new CYP Control app, and also delivers a stereo amplifier, line-level output, IR control and LAN connection, meaning it is well suited for installations where minimal fuss, yet strong control is required. Long associated with the implementation of HDBaseT technology, CYP has created the MA-421 to suit applications that require simple installation and control, but still retain the high-level of performance its larger matrix products are known for. The generous four HDMI inputs can be independently switched to either of the two outputs (single HDBaseT or HDMI with mirrored HDBaseT), allowing for dual display use in one room (TV screen and projector) with the same or different source in another. A single HDBaseT receiver (PUV-1710LRX-AVLC) is included in the package allowing users to get up and running quickly and with no fuss.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
CYP says quality of performance is assured as the MA-421 delivers the same up to 4K UHD (18Gbps, 4K @50/60Hz 4:4:4 8-bit) and Dolby Vision performance as its larger siblings. This is thanks to the inclusion of the company’s AVLC (Adaptive Visually Lossless Compression) technology, which compresses the 18Gbps signal down to 10.2Gbps so that it can fit within the bandwidth offered by HDBaseT. AVLC faithfully reassembles the image, so that the user receives the same 4K UHD image as supplied at the source. Scaling is also offered on all the outputs, with independent EDID based output scaling for automatic compatibility with 4K/4KHDR and older 1080p TVs.

CYP’s PUV-1082PRO is rammed full of powerful features
The new CYP app delivers ease of control
Audio is also given lots of attention as the MA-421 can support the passthrough of HD audio formats including LPCM 2/5.1/7.1CH, Dolby Digital 2/5.1CH, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos and DTS- X / HD Master Audio. The built-in 20W stereo amplifier and mirrored 3.5mm stereo line output can be assigned to any of the outputs, allowing the user the flexibility to improve audio performance where needed. The HDMI output also has built in ARC (Audio Return Channel) audio return pathway to pull the audio signal back from the connected TV and utilised by the built-in amplifier and/or line output. The new free CYP Control app included means the user can control any connected TV or source from their mobile device via IR as well as the MA-421 itself, including source selection and volume levels. Set up is simple from the MA-421’s integral WebGui. CYP argues that with a packed feature line up, the MA421 mini-matrix it a top pick for a multitude of domestic and commercial applications.
More matrix magic
The PUV-1082-PRO has been created to cope with the most complex distribution systems
Another really crucial recent release from CYP is the PUV-1082-PRO 10 x 10 HDMI HDBaseT matrix with audio matrixing and AVLC technology. This is a really feature packed product designed to cope with the most complex of AV distribution systems. Its flagship matrix, CYP explains that the PUV-1082PRO is based on the successful PUV-1082-4K22, but offers independent video scaling on all outputs as well as CYP’s AVLC technology, which like its smaller cousin reproduces 18Gbps 4K UHD video signals over HDBaseT. Available now, the PUV-1082-PRO comes packaged with IR remote control, rackmount ears, detachable handles two IR extender cables, two IR blaster cables and two power supplies. The PUV-1082-PRO supports the transmission of video (resolutions up to 4K UHD 10/12-bit HDR & Dolby Vision, HDCP 2.2, HDMI2.0) and multi-channel digital audio
from 10 HDMI sources to eight HDBaseT outputs and two independent HDMI2.0 outputs (18Gbps). Despite the 10.2Gbps limitation of HDBaseT technology, the product enables data rates of up to 18Gbps to be transmitted using CYP’s AVLC tech. The transmitter enables 4K UHD sources up-to and including 4K@60Hz (4:4:4 8-bit) as well as 10/12 bit sources with HDR (including Dolby Vision) to be extended to a compatible receiver. The result is a perfect 4K 6G visually lossless image delivered to the display screen. The PUV-1082-PRO also supports independent video output scaling on all of the HDBaseT and HDMI outputs. This is particularly useful when transmitting a 4K HDR image from the matrix to a standard 1080p HD display within an AV setup so those legacy products do not cause any problems. The product also incorporates an independent audio matrix with 14 audio outputs and 10 audio inputs. These outputs and inputs can also be used for de-embedding HDMI audio to the audio outputs and embedding audio to the HDBaseT and HDMI outputs. The audio CAT connections, along with compatible bi-directional audio modules (PU-305BD-RX & PU-305BDA-RX) allow integration with remote sources and remote audio zones. In addition, volume, mute, treble, bass and audio lip sync correction control are available on all direct audio outputs. Optical Audio Return (OAR) Technology allows the optical input on the PUV-1830RX-AVLC receiver to be routed back to the audio matrix. This matrix supports also high resolution digital audio formats such as LPCM 7.1CH, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio as well as 3D video content. LAN connectivity provides a 100BaseT network for smart TVs or games consoles in each zone. The matrix has a useful built-in pattern generator which can be used to verify the video signal on any of its 10 output ports – really useful feature this one. The Power over HDBaseT (PoH) function provides power to compatible receivers. Control is via manual selection buttons, IR, RS232, Telnet or Web GUI. CYP provides control drivers for all the major control automation. This unit also supports RS232 pass-through to the receivers. The PUV-1082PRO is designed to be used with PUV-1830RX-AVLC or PUV-1810RX-AVLC receivers that use the PoH and LAN capabilities of the matrix. CYP Europe +44 (0)203 1379180, cypeurope.com
