PJ HIFI SUPPLY SUPERIOR HOME CINEMA FEATURING SONY AND BOWERS & WILKINS AWE worked with PJ Hi-Fi to deliver top class home cinema with a challenging brief. When electrical retailer PJ HiFi was asked to provide a high-performance audio solution for a South London home cinema, the client brief was clear – the audio technology should be invisible, concealed within the fabric of the room. The speakers and audio equipment needed to blend seamlessly within the cinema so as not to detract from the aesthetic of the client’s brand-new home entertainment complex. This entertainment space also comprises of a gym, pool, sauna, and office.
THE HIDDEN CHALLENGE Working to an agreed budget and precise design requirements, PJ HiFi worked with AWE to source a sound system that would
The Marantz SR8015, sets a robust and versatile foundation for the solution. This 8K 11.2 channel AVR has been tuned by worldrenowned sound acousticians, for exceptional, audiophile-quality. It provides great capabilities for home cinema as well as gaming, including HDMI technologies such as 8K/60Hz passthrough or upscaling, various HDR format support including HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log-Gamma and Dynamic HDR, as well as the latest gaming technologies such as 4K/120Hz pass-through, Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode. Andy Taylor comments “The Marantz SR8015 provides the driving force for the system, it’s a very economical AVR with the
right power and performance to get the speaker package singing.”
HEARD, BUT NOT SEEN In terms of speakers, PJ HiFi specified three Bowers & Wilkins CT7.4 - 2 Way Vented Box Speakers. The CT7.4, can be integrated within a baffle wall or within cabinetry. For this project, they were used for the left, centre, and right channels, along with two subwoofers positioned behind the acoustically transparent projector screen in a custom-made recess. Each CT7.4 speaker uses high-sensitivity Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeters designed specifically for the reproduction of movie soundtracks along with first-order tweeter crossover filters for minimal signal degradation.
support immersive Dolby Atmos, work with the dimensions and construction of the cinema room, as well as meeting the client’s expectations on quality and performance. “We worked closely with the client on the design and materials within the room to keep everything as discrete as possible, while ensuring compromises weren’t made on audio performance.” Explains Andy Taylor of PJ HiFi.
DISCREET, YET POWERFUL A combination of Bowers & Wilkins speakers, subwoofers and a Marantz AV Receiver (AVR) were selected for the project, available from AWE only to authorised integrators.

The CT7.4s were then partnered with two Bowers & Wilkins CTSW12 12-inch subwoofers. The CT SW12’s 30cm drivers and sealed enclosure deliver serious bass from an easy-to-install design, helping to maintain the client’s hidden tech design request. “When it comes to specifying discreet but ultra-powerful loudspeakers, Bowers & Wilkins is always our top recommendation.” comments Andy, PJ Hifi. To create an immersive audio experience, eight Bowers & Wilkins CWM7.5S2 in wall speakers, with integrated back box, were selected to deliver a Dolby Atmos experience. The CWM7.5s were specified for side and rear channels, and Atmos height (ceiling) fronts and rears. Using only Bowers & Wilkins speakers provided synergy throughout the surround sound field, ensuring the voice and performance are matched. The CWM7.5 houses a 130mm (5in) bass/mid-range Continuum cone driver plus a 25mm (1in) Carbon Dome tweeter, coupled to a forward firing Flowport™ for an outstanding bass response from a relatively small footprint. It has a critically formed baffle constructed from

solution that we could duplicate on other sites in the future. With this second site at Fulham, we really got to show what could be achieved for this customer and client group in terms of the cinema. There is definitely big potential for growth in the luxury MDU sector. There have been systems aimed at this client group before, but the level of performance required here is new, it’s up to us as an industry to show developers that the investment is worth it and this is starting to happen.” As part of the design process, we invited the Riverstone team to demonstrations at Pulse Cinemas to help them understand the different performance levels at various price points. Joe comments, “These demonstrations were hugely helpful to them and us, allowing all parties to narrow down on a performance specification. We had several challenges on the first site at Kensington as we were not involved early in the structural design of the cinema room, and some of the seating positions were compromised. On the Fulham project we were able to deliver room dimension templates early on (based on the number of seats required) and their architects

@Install_mag
have also taken these for future projects as well.” Joe explains, “Getting involved early meant this cinema was going to face very few compromises and could include a separate ‘projection room’ to house the equipment, improve performance and of course give us ease of physical access. Our design meant that speakers could be positioned correctly, doors would not be placed in areas that would compromise performance and the height of the room allowed for unobstructed views of the screen in any seat.” “We had already worked on modelling subwoofer positions and nodal issues before delivering the templates using REW software. This size of room required quite a particular speaker layout (7.6.4) with six subwoofers to deliver a great bass response to all the seats. The customer was very clear that they wanted very high performance when it came to the picture and a large screen to boot so we landed on a Barco Balder Cinemascope Laser Projector and a 5m Screen Research fixed acoustically transparent 2.37:1 projection screen.”
/Essentialinstall
Joe explains, “Some sound proofing had already been done on the space before our installation began in earnest, and because of the apartments above, we were told we would be restricted to 83db in the room. We were able to easily demonstrate that this level would not be enough. We used a sound level metre and just by whistling showed we could reach that level and it would not be sufficient. However, we were able to show that with further sound proofing we could get to 95db and with further demonstration it was agreed that this would be the optimum level for the cinema. The system can go higher to give us headroom, but for the client group this level is optimal. We also used curtains and thick carpet in the room to help control the sound and also guided the structure of the room towards all wood instead of using any metal stud work construction techniques which can cause vibration. There are also Vicoustic treatments in key spots around the room such as behind the screen.” Because image quality and consistency were very important the team used a Lumagen 4K Video Scaler which in real time scales any image to 4K so there are never any delays in image delivery or drops in quality when transitioning between different sources or when residents are watching a cable broadcast from Sky. Sports like F1 and Golf are popular, so the system had to deliver really good quality for these types of broadcasts, so when the broadcast cuts to advertising there is no jarring loss of picture or quality as the system tries to readjust to a different picture format, everything is at 4K all the time. Other sources in the room include Sky and there is also a Panasonic 4K HDR Blu-Ray player so residents can bring their own content to enjoy in the cinema. However, for the best in performance, the system also enjoys access to a Kaleidescape Strato 4K Media Player 6TB. The cinema provides options for residents to choose from and the building’s managers download and playback the required content. There is also a games console and a laptop input to deliver presentations to residents.

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY which allows the space to be used as a lecture theatre as well as a cinema. Joe adds, “We have also built in a full remote access system onto the backend. If any technical assistance is needed, we can jump on from wherever we are and make any adjustments or perhaps reboot parts of the system and make sure we are always at optimum performance.”
BUILDING ACCESS Access in another way is delivered by the ‘projection room’ behind the main cinema room. The space has two portholes to allow for the projector to do its work and for the person setting the system up to play can see what is going on. The whole space is controlled with RTI set up to be easy to use for staff. The room is automated using RTI to respond accordingly during pauses or beginning of playback altering Joe explains, “Control of the cinema is delivered by an Anthem MRX 1120, giving us 11 channels of amplification to play with. However, to deliver more dynamics into the room we furnished the front three channels with extra amplification in the form of an Anthem MCA325 three channel amp. Due to the size of the room, we also doubled up in the number of side speakers and added four overhead channels too. “Bass was always going to be a challenge in this room, part of this issue was solved by using six Paradigm Defiance x 10s in optimal positions, but at slightly different heights, however we also used some DSP DDRC-24’s so we could control the performance of the subs separately from the 1120. These magic little
boxes allow us to separately EQ and time align each of the subs to improve the performance even further. The rest of the speaker array was rounded out from the excellent Paradigm CI Pro range giving us a really superb audio performance for the whole room.” Bearing in mind the customer group, there were some other special modifications and additions the team needed to implement. A few of the residents have hearing issues and so Prestige Audio employed a Sennheiser system that allows viewers to use their smart devices to access a special audio track they can listen to on their own headphones. This feed promotes clear dialogue and presents an experience tuned to those living with hearing loss. The room also has a full Shure Microphone and transmitter system
the lighting and bring all the systems on-line. Joe underlines, “Special mention also has to go to the interior design company on the project, Bowler James Brindley. They really were a joy to work with and we formed a really good partnership making sure the project got where it needed to be in the performance and aesthetic ambition for the space. For us in many ways this project marks an interesting waypoint as our sector expands and other trades understand and appreciate more what we are bringing. This system is most uncompromised cinema we have produced in a long time, maybe even ever.” Prestige Audio prestigeaudio.co.uK

The audio needed to leave the aesthetic ambition for the space completely in-tact
Shaun explains, “The brief was simple, but ambitious, the venue wanted the very best audio system available for The Aubrey. The aim was to create a world-class ‘background’ music experience, but also accommodate the live DJ sets. The venue attracts some well-known DJ’s and is fast becoming an ‘influencer’ space in the heart of the capital. “The Aubrey vibe is high end but achingly cool, and the interior design put some challenging requirements on achieving the performance required without affecting the final aesthetic of the main room or the individual areas. We needed high-performance loudspeakers discrete enough to blend with the interior furnishings, yet powerful enough to deliver the sonic escapism the brief dictated.” For the project, Knektd chose L-Acoustics compact X4i coaxial loudspeakers for the smaller areas and bays, along with the brand’s high-performance wall-mounted Syva colinear line source speakers for the large open area of the main restaurant. Low-frequency reinforcement across the system was provided by L-Acoustics Syva Sub hidden out of sight around the venue and built in to custom joinery to further blend in with the interior design. The system was configured, optimised and tuned for the space by L-Acoustics Creations and Knektd, with the entire system controlled by Crestron making sure it is easy for staff to change things if needed. There are also pre-sets built in that cater for different times of the day reflecting different moods.

Shaun argues, “There is nothing on the market quite like the X4i for delivering outstanding performance for their size. Within a 4in cube, the coaxial driver offers an exceptionally smooth response from 120Hz to 20kHz, with a maximum sound pressure level of 116dB. The coaxial driver configuration gives point-source musical
integrity and exceptional imaging, seamlessly across a very wide area in front of the speaker. They can be bracket-mounted or flush-fitted and are available to order in any RAL colour to match the venue décor.” X4i were incorporated across five small sectioned-off areas of the venue to ensure consistent sound pressure irrespective of

where the guests are located. Set against the dimmed room décor and dark wood-stained ceiling, the standard finish dark grey-brown X4i worked admirably for The Aubrey. The X4i were all bracket-mounted rather than flush, to aid directivity and final room tuning. The main Syva loudspeakers are the backbone of L-Acoustics Creations’ audio offering for premium residential and hospitality installations. Drawing heavily on the brand’s extensive pro-audio and stadium-level live sound expertise, Syva is a compact colinear source loudspeaker with unique L-FINS waveguide and L-VENT porting to deliver all the advantages of a line-array: exceptional coverage across a wide area, clear vocals with smooth horizontal dispersion and powerful, articulate low-frequency performance. In the main restaurant space, the Syva speakers are wall-mounted above table height, fulfilling the need for visual discretion. Their slim column format, back-to-wall mounting and standard dark grey-brown colour were a perfect match for The Aubrey’s warm, rich décor and opulent style. Mounted on the long wall of the rectangular room, the colinear source driver array and unique waveguide engineering ensure cohesive, articulate sound across the restaurant area without any live or dead spots. Over the eight-month refurb project at The Aubrey, Knektd was in constant dialogue with the interiors team to ensure the final design hit all the benchmarks in the brief for both aesthetics and sound. The result is another exceptional project from Knektd in a premium London venue and another flagship installation for L-Acoustics Creations.

The venue’s different areas all needed to be catered for
On completion of the project, Matt Reid, co-founder of The Aubrey commented in the London Evening Standard, “There’s always such a passion for music in Japan, where the curation of the soundtrack always comes from the room, from the feel of it. Here at The Aubrey, the sonic experience is absolutely part of the identity of the place.” Shaun underlines, “We had a very positive experience working with L-Acoustics Creations. They offered full support right throughout the project from creating impressive 3D visuals using their Soundvision software at the start to on-going support now the system is
finished and up and running. We have the same products in our showroom and the audio is very impressive. Huge depth, with a really warm and unique ability to deliver high-quality for all kinds of music.” A really well executed project all round this one and an area that seems to be on the rise. After some obviously challenging times for the hospitality sector, these types of spaces seem to be coming back strong. Shaun concludes, “This type of project is definitely seeing lots of growth. We have several projects in the pipeline because of being involved here. It’s been a really positive experience all-round.”

THE MOORINGS SETS SAIL John Brimage, Technical Director at Sensible Technology, guides EI through this impressive project, including a high-performance home cinema. Since 2003, Sensible Technology has been delivering technology-focused solutions for high-specification homes and commercial premises in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The business started by delivering multi-room audio systems, lighting control systems and high quality light fittings. Since changing ownership (to Matt Guille and John Brimage) in May 2016, Sensible now provides significantly more ‘smart home’ products and services including Control4 home automation Lutron and Rako Lighting Control Systems and structured cabling (data and WiFi networks).
14 CASE STUDY REVIEW 2023
For this project, John explains, “We regularly work with architects, builders and interior designers and are often involved early on in the design stage. Having worked with Architect Tom Bourgaize (The Drawing Room) before, we were again invited to specify the technology part of this stunning east coast Guernsey home.” John continues, “We had not worked with the client before, so it was important to discuss with them their lifestyle and important technology they enjoy in the home. One of the requests was a no compromise home
cinema and easy-to-use technology. We agreed a brief from the start and very little changed throughout. “The client had already experienced Lutron and Control4, so already had knowledge on what a smart home can offer. Naturally we chose Lutron Homeworks QSX for lighting control with the tried and tested international Seetouch keypads. During the first fix part of the project Lutron released the elegant and versatile hand crafted Alisse keypads which was an immediate hit with our clients so replaced the original specification.”

Comfort and cutting edge tech collide in the cinema
John also explains that ceiling coffers were a feature designed by the architect in most rooms, so the team chose to illuminate these by installing 3000k linear LEDs linked to the Lutron DALI system. For areas where downlights were required the team used used Orluna lighting, a favourite with the firm since 2013. For light control, John explains, “For shading solutions, we always work with our partners Ace Contracts, so we immediately asked them to take the lead with this. The clients were introduced to the team at Ace who specified a wide range of solutions from Lutron.” As for particular technical challenges, John reveals, “We had to integrate Velux motorised skylights, shutters and blinds so they could

be controlled via the Lutron keypads and individually via a Control4 Touch screen, this was integrated using a Lutron contact closure interface and Velux’s io-homecontrol Interface. Also due to the location of the property (on the cliffs) the 4G mobile signal was terrible, so Stella Doradus equipment was installed to boost the signal. The home also features a multi-room audio system using Bluesound Powernode amplifiers, Bluesound Pulse Soundbar+, Gallo Acoustics Habitat speakers, Triad Silver in-ceiling speakers and some hidden options in the form of Amina Mobius 7i and an Amina ALF80 invisible subwoofer. The home also enjoys viewing options from a Samsung QLED Q95 and Frame TV.

THE HOME CINEMA Following the request for an easy to use, but high-performance home cinema, John says, “We immediately got in touch with Pulse Cinemas, and following a video call they put their team of designers to work on three different specification for the space we had to work with. “Pulse cinemas specified suitable speakers and amplification for the room size from Paradigm and Anthem, a motorised screen from Screen Research and projector from Sim2. The room was small in size with a low ceiling height which meant we had to get creative with the seating layout to enable access to the back seats.
“Again, Ace Contracts supplied the acoustic wall treatments which also gave the room that extra bit of luxury. Premium leather Fortress Seating chairs with retractable tables, reading lights and cup holders were supplied by Pulse Cinemas. We also fitted a Buttkicker (Haptic Transducer) in each seat for that extra impact when watching action movies and a star ceiling from Starscape. “I think we all agree our favourite part was the cinema. As a business we had installed cinemas before but not as astounding as this room turned out to be.” Sensible Technology sensible.gg

BRIGADE’S HOME CINEMA BONUS AViology adds advantages, including a home cinema, for residents of this new innovative development. Situated in the heart of Borough and just minutes from London’s bustling South Bank, Brigade Court is a new luxury residential development. Set in the former home of the London Fire Brigade, it connects past, present, and future through a mix of Grade II listed buildings and contemporary architecture, set around a central courtyard for a smart take on modern living. In addition to the studio, one, two and three-bed apartments on offer, what sets this development apart is the quality and extent of the communal spaces’ residents will be able to enjoy. The Social offers resident lounges and workspaces, all managed by a 24-hour concierge who can attend to any needs they may have. The Mess Room dining space with a fully equipped kitchen can be booked for private dining or meetings, while the Lookouts are shared roof terraces with impressive views of the London skyline. Perhaps most unexpected, however, is a 12-seat cinema screening room which can be booked exclusively by residents or used any time for casual viewing. To maintain the quality levels seen throughout the rest of the development, AV specialists The AViology were called upon to specify and fit out the screening room, and the team enlisted the help of distributor AWE to assist in the specification and supply of the appropriate equipment.

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY High-performance shared spaces are a major aspect of the project
Although this will be a shared facility, the approach was very similar to creating a personal home cinema room and the focus remained very much on creating a high-end space that delivers the best audio-visual experience possible. To achieve this AWE supplied a Sony VPLXW7000 native 4K laser projector along with a 7.2.4 Bowers & Wilkins speaker system and suitable amplification. The extensive audio setup includes three CWM7.3S2 and four CWM7.5S2 in-wall speakers powered by a Denon AVCX6700 AV receiver twinned with a Rotel RMB-1555 power amplifier, as well as two CCM7.5S2 inceiling speakers, two ISW-4 in-wall subwoofers and a SA1000 subwoofer amplifier. A Sony UBPX800M2B.CEK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision provides a local source. Dan Wheadon at The AViology explains, “I’ve used AWE for some time. I’d previously heard a Bowers & Wilkins cinema room and I was very impressed, so now being able to source through AWE is a real bonus. I was looking for the right opportunity to use Bowers & Wilkins in a cinema room and this came up. It was a bit of a

no-brainer; I know and trust the brand and have a great relationship with the supplier. “We’ve gone to the higher end because performance is crucial; we want the clients to be impressed and when they walk into the room and all systems are fired up for them to go, ‘wow, that sounds and looks great’.”
RESIDENT FOCUSED
The residents were also front of mind when the room was being designed, of course, as Dan says, “These are high-end apartments, and the cinema room is part of the package – obviously a cinema space sounds like a cool shared amenity, but from our side, we don’t want to just tick a box, we want the residents to be blown away when they first use it.” With the cinema room being in the basement of a residential building and surrounded by apartments, one area that did require more thought than a standard private cinema space was the noise output. As well as the potential impact on residents, the building also had to abide by all noise, ventilation, mechanical and electrical regulations.

CASE STUDY REVIEW 2023 19
ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY
Dan says, “We’re putting a substantial number of high-powered speakers into the walls, so we needed to carefully consider the impact of noise bleeding through to the apartments and the surrounding areas. Obviously, as it’s part of a large apartment complex, the mechanical side of things are strictly regulated too. So, for example where the rack was going to be, we had to work out the exact heat output to have the correct extraction as this forms part of the complex heat recovery and ventilation system across the entire block.” AWE was on hand to provide information and offer technical assistance to ensure these measurements were accurate. Dan explains, “There’s an acoustic consultant employed for the whole complex
for all aspects of noise control, of course one of these was the noise output of the cinema room. AWE was able to assist us with calculating the exact noise output levels for the room based on the equipment purchased from them. These were submitted to the acoustic consultant, the same with the heat output for the equipment. We were able to submit that to the mechanical and electrical consultants to make sure that it complied within the constraints that they have to work with.” It was also important to ensure the room was easy to use, with simple controls for elements such as lighting and AV Control. Dan adds, “If it was someone’s home, we might have more options for the user, but this is going to be used by a wide range of people with different
technical abilities. The room has the same backend equipment, but on the user-facing side it’s a case of keeping it simple.” ”With the construction team on site having to deal with various delays due to COVID-19 and materials shortages, the flexibility of the AWE team was particularly beneficial throughout the project,” concludes Dan, “I’ve had a great relationship with AWE for some time now and the team were very helpful getting stock allocated. They were able to line up all the stock and held the order for us until we were ready to take delivery on site. That side of it was very good as always.” AViology theaviology.co

A TRULY MAJIK AUTOMATED HOME
Following a three-year redevelopment project, a single-storey, four-bedroom home in Lytham St Anne’s that enjoys a comprehensive Control4 automation system designed by Snap One Partner, Majik House, has been acclaimed the Winner of the Best Smart Home Project category at the 2022 Northern Design Awards. Built in the 1950s, this striking 13,000ft² contemporary home offers a stunning, living space inside and out, including an Olympiclength swimming pool, a high-end gym, nine bathrooms and open plan communal spaces that adapt to the client’s needs at the touch of a button. Ben Jurin Architecture was commissioned to create this ultra-high end, bespoke residence by a client who considered himself to be nontechnical. Ben was also new to the world of smart home technology and so turned to Snap One partner and automation specialist, Majik House, to advise on what could be achieved. They worked in partnership with Opus-Electrical on the design and delivery, project managing the electrical installation and the activities of contractors.
22 CASE STUDY REVIEW 2023
Jit Mistry, Sales Director at Majik House, explains, “Preston Pools referred Majik House to the architect Ben Jurin who had never built a smart home before and wanted a very step-by-step understanding of what was required, therefore, the project grew over the build process.” While the home largely keeps to its original footprint, every other aspect has been enhanced as Ben Jurin Architecture worked to create a bold and contemporary, yet timeless design that offers luxury living at its best. To achieve this, smart home technology has been integrated throughout, all while respecting the architect’s core requirement that it remained unobtrusive and complemented the property design rather than overshadowing it. This meant that everything needed to be discreet, seamless and, crucially, easy to use.

To meet this need, the property uses Control4, utilising hand-held remotes and T4 touchscreens, to ensure the client can quickly and easily adapt any space to meet their needs. For example, the family only needs to interact with the control system when they wish to change a lighting scene, isolate the AV to individual rooms (zones) or join it up in ‘party mode’, when required. Invisible speakers and subwoofers were deployed to deliver expansive sound without impacting the aesthetic. These are enabled by multi-room amps and an audio matrix from Snap One brand, Triad.

Jit reveals, “We used Redline to help us design invisible speakers (Amina) with discrete but powerful bass using Velodyne and Ariston products. Habitech supplied all the Sonance in-ceiling speakers and garden series Sonance solution, the network was Snap One’s Araknis but Wi-Fi was Rukus.” The home also features Lutron QSX Lighting control and Silent Gliss curtain motors with Blind Space tracks. Future Automation Under Bed TV Lift and all articulated brackets were also included.

Lighting control proved to be a particular focus for the architect as the possibilities within the property became clear. Majik House were initially given a base lighting design to work from, but this expanded as the project developed and the lighting scheme throughout is now integrated into the fabric of the building, enhancing the clean and precise lines of the structure, all controlled by Control4. Elsewhere, automated curtains and shading, security and access systems are all integrated and controlled by the Control4 system.

The exterior fire-pit and music zone is a particular favourite of the install team
Jit says, “The architect was excited at being able to control all the lights and to have a global scene for such an open plan space. Ultimately, we’ve created global scenes for the whole house – the customer has three scenes that he uses for different events and it sets the whole house, inside and outside.”
MORE CONTROL
The Control4 CA-10 primary controller along with the EA-5 are used to ensure a simple client experience, no matter how complex the programming behind the scenes. The system is built on a robust data and Wi-Fi network using the Araknis and Pakedge products from Snap One. The CA-10 also comes with OvrC from Snap One which allows Majik House to offer advanced remote management and monitoring and effectively maintain the system, without having to be overly intrusive with unnecessary visits to site. Majik House provides extensive warranties for the whole installation, including remote rebooting of technologies in the house, when needed and operating system software updates all managed through OvrC. “Because OvrC is embedded within Control4, it’s so easy for us to set up and then be able to reset devices, like satellite boxes,” adds Jit. “The client expects us to look after the system with a high level of customer service and with OvrC we can maintain it without any hassle at all.” The customer says, “Having Majik House and Opus-Electrical involved in the project proved a huge benefit right from the outset. Their approach was never that of a contractor, more a trusted and assured partner who would bring their experience and expertise

to the table throughout. Whatever was asked of them, they provided solutions; not always easy, but solutions which would ensure Ben’s beautiful design of our new home was never compromised. They never tied us in knots with technology – just like the operation of the lights, the sound, the TVs, everything is just nice and simple. There’s no question, the involvement of Majik House has elevated our home beyond our expectations.” Jit concludes, “My favourite area is outside in the firepit with the water feature and music from
hidden speakers in the hedge. The customer loves to entertain in summer with music on, all doors open, which creates one open space and brings the outside, inside.” Looking ahead, the positive outcome of this project has also led to a strong relationship between architect and integrator, with the pair committed to working on two more projects together this year. HIGH HOPES FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE This customer had high hopes for their very own home cinema space. Cinema Rooms set about making it happen. Simon Gregory, Director at Cinema Rooms, explains, “Our client contacted us in 2019 and was keen to have a dedicated cinema room. The client was clearly a home cinema enthusiast and previously had his old system in Home Entertainment Magazine. ”The client made a visit to the Artcoustic showroom to see what could be achieved in his own home. The project which, while not difficult to win, was subject to delay due to the pandemic. As the rest of the house was having rebuilding work completed the pandemic
26 CASE STUDY REVIEW 2023
caused delays with materials and builders. During this time first fix commenced while the rest of the house was being finished off.” Discussions continued to get the room which measured 7 x 4m technically correct. After completing a bass simulation starting with them in the preferred locations, the team could then see how the room would react and what bass quality could be expected. To get the correct output to deliver Dolby’s 115db, the room required four subwoofers.
Simon says, “Trying to get the clients to have four subs is not easy, but the customer has seen the bass simulation so it was agreed to go with two Artcoustic sub 3s at the front (two 10in longthrow woofers in each sub) and one Artcoustic sub 4 (employing 4 x 10in long-throw woofers).” The customer loves 3D movies and with the prospect of the release of new titles such as Avatar: Way Of The Water, was keen to get a projector that was capable of 3D and to have enough 3D glasses for the seven seats that were going into the room.

Simon adds, “Due to the size of the room and number of seats, we also wanted to get air conditioning in place, but due to the bar and hidden projector we were limited for space. Due to the lens shift capability on the projector, it was decided to move the projector to one side so the ducted air con unit could fit within the bar area.”
BUILDING THE CINEMA Simon recalls, “The first job we needed to undertake was the build out of the screen and side walls. We built the screen wall out by 300mm and created a carcass to house the Artcoustic LCR’s and sub in the centre of the wall. The void was then backfilled with rockwool

and clad over with OSB leaving the speaker carcass exposed in the centre. The same process was carried out with the side and back walls with much smaller carcasses for side and rear speakers. “The next job was to create a dropped ceiling to allow for a coffer towards the front of the room at the original ceiling height. The framework was built, filled with rockwool and again clad with OSB.” Simon adds, “We also created a bespoke bar cabinet along the back wall to house the AV rack, projector and air conditioning unit. Antique mirrors and LED lights were added, as was a custom grill for the projector. We also built a stage to create better viewing for the second tier of seating. The window and curtain coffers were lined with the same material as the bar and stage step cladding to create a reoccurring theme throughout the room.” The team also applied 12mm foam to the walls and ceiling to help with the acoustic quality of the room and then stretched fabric to create a seamless finish. The majority of the fabric in the room was navy blue with a contrasting gold feature band running around the centre. The fabrics chosen were from the company’s cinema luxe acoustically transparent range. A star scape ceiling was added to the ceiling coffer to finish the room with the coffer perimeter being finished in the same material as the bar, window liner and stage cladding. Once the room fit out was completed the equipment was installed and calibrated. Multiple subs were installed at front and back

positions to address room modes that were shown in the initial design processes. Simon reveals, “By installing subs at both the front and back, we measured an incredibly flat response in every seat. The system has enough headroom to be able to play Dolby’s reference of bass at 115db down to below 20Hz in the seating positions. The Sony projector offers a fantastic picture with the benefit of lens shift and 3D functionality. The client already had a Oppo Blu Ray offering great picture and sound. We also installed the excellent Zappti for its versatility in movie watching. A Starscape Infinity modular star panel system was added for that wow factor along with Rako lighting control to set the right scene for whatever is being watched.”

Talking of seating, the cinema benefits from two rows of FrontRow Serenity chairs the middle front pair are in the lounger option - for extra comfort. As for a favourite aspect of this project, Simon reveals, “Our favourite part is how the room sounds! It’s one of the best we have ever done and only with careful planning and acoustic simulations have we been able to achieve this. And thanks to our partners at Cinema Luxe the room looks amazing which has also helped with the sound due the quality of the room build!” The customer says, “It has been dream to have my own home cinema for a long time. Even though it took longer than planed due to the covid situation and other unforeseen
circumstances, we finally got there in the end and the wait was well worth it. To choose a favourite part of the new cinema room would be hard because everything was so well thought out by Cinema Rooms. The picture and sound and the overall look and feel of the room is amazing and has all come together perfectly.” The client is going to call the room The Majestic after the movie about an old run-down cinema called the Majestic which has become derelict due to hard times, but the community get together and decide to restore it; nice touch! Cinema Rooms cinema-rooms.co.uk
ANY PARTICULAR CHALLENGES?
Simon says, “This particular client is a movie fanatic and naturally wanted the biggest screen he could possibly have, but also wanted two rows of seating. We built the stage 100mm taller than we normally would to ensure the full screen could be seen wherever you sat in the room. Due to our experience, most technical issues will be ironed out at the design stage ensuring a stress-free and seamless install. “The 16:9 screen for sports and movies is still 3.3m wide, 149in diagonal; plenty big enough and technically correct from the main seating position. We of course had the projector offset in the room but you would never know due to the excellent lens shift on the Sony projector.”
