SONIC SCULPTURES: IMAGINE THIS ELEVATES LISTENING ROOM USING BOWERS & WILKINS NAUTILUS
When UK integration firm, Imagine This, was tasked with transforming a minimalist, reverberant space in a luxury residence into a multifunctional stereo room, the brief was clear: to deliver a high-end custom audio and an acoustical interior design solution, blending aesthetics with top-tier performance.
TECHNOLOGY MEETS DESIGN
The home’s minimalist style, exemplified through clean lines and floor to ceiling windows meant that the environment was extremely challenging acoustically, particularly considering the intended use of the space as a listening room. There was emphasis on finding a solution that would complement the high-end, art gallery-esque aesthetic.
For this project, where both performance and luxury style were of paramount importance, Imagine This turned to Bowers & Wilkins’ iconic Nautilus loudspeakers, as supplied by CI distributor AWE, to meet these requirements.
Guy Singleton, Managing Director at Imagine This, explains why the Nautilus
speakers were the perfect choice: “We wanted something that matched and complemented the aesthetics of the room, which is where the Ammonite theme evolved from, taking inspiration from these loudspeakers to create one, cohesive, artistic statement.”
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS…
Innovative design, precision manufacturing and exhaustive testing ensures Nautilus not only looks like a work of art, but it also performs optimally - with each speaker hand-built to order by a dedicated specialist team in the manufacturer’s UK factory.
A pair of Nautilus loudspeakers were positioned on the left and right sides of the space, now known as the Ammonite room, providing rich, room-filling, two-channel audio.
“These are four-way loudspeakers which come with their own external digital crossovers. Each pair of speakers are serial numbered and is unique to each client. Also, Bowers & Wilkins offer the opportunity to visit the factory to watch a pair of speakers being made” shares Guy.
Each loudspeaker is powered by a Classé amplifier which utilises switching technologies for both power supply and amplification stages, both of which are fed via a preamp/processor.
In addition to their impressive audio quality, the Nautilus loudspeakers exist as a modern art installation, with their instantly recognisable shape providing the perfect focal point in the room for the client, who opted for a distinctive, custom grey finish to complement the ‘Ammonite’ theme.
ACOUSTIC TREATMENT
“We knew that this was a challenging space, with concrete walls, floors, ceilings and lots of glass,” said Guy. “Controlling acoustics in this kind of environment is very challenging, unless you can control the sound in that room, you’re fighting a losing battle.”
To address the room’s acoustics, custom acoustic treatment panels were designed. Firstly, the rooms RT60 (reverberation time) was tested to see how long it took an impulse to decay over 60dB. The RT60 value initially measured at an uncomfortable 4.5 seconds and the aim was to bring it down to half a secondideal for a good-sounding room - by effectively controlling any resonances and reflections.
Inspired by the curved design of the Nautilus, two large, gold parametric panels were installed on the left and right walls, while the back wall featured intricately crafted diffractor panels, made from four types of timber and framed by the striking loudspeakers. The diffractor panels were created out of 528 meticulously handcrafted wooden blades slotted together to expertly combat the acoustic waves that hit the back of the room.
The first reflection point is now controlled by the acoustic treatment’s stylish panel design, ensuring the client experiences the loudspeakers comfortably. Reverberation time
has also dramatically reduced, while back-wall reflections are redirected to prevent unwanted sound concentration in the main listening area. Behind the acoustically transparent panels is absorption for lower frequencies, below 500Hz, while the intricate back panels scatter mid and high-frequency waves for a balanced acoustic environment.
The result was a dramatic reduction in the RT60 from 4.5 seconds to the ideal 0.5 seconds, allowing for a comfortable listening experience. The room now boasts linear RT60 control over seven octaves, providing the client with a finely tuned acoustic environment.
AN UNPARALLELED EXPERIENCE
For this project, where both performance and design were paramount, Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus offered a level of craftsmanship and audio fidelity that matched the client’s vision and the demands of the room. The distinct design of the speakers is almost sculptural, which added an artistic element while delivering first-rate sound quality.
The room was designed to fully harness the capabilities of the Nautilus speakers, ensuring the acoustics and layout brought out their best.
The client’s reaction to the finished space was overwhelmingly positive, towards both the acoustic treatment of the space and the custom, stylish design, particularly regarding the impact of the Bowers & Wilkins’ Nautilus – a true testament to how a loudspeaker can elevate a space, turning it into an extraordinary experience.

PROCELLA-BASED PROJECT TRIUMPHS AT SMART BUILDING AWARDS!
DPP Smart Home & Electrical chose Procella Audio as the ideal solution for its ‘Surrey Cinema’ project, winner of the prestigious ‘Best Home Cinema Project Over £50K’ at the Smart Building Awards 2024, presented and hosted by Essential Install.
Announced during the UK’s trade show for the smart home and luxury AV sector, EI Live!, the Smart Building Awards are designed to reward the very best in the industry, recognising innovation, attention to detail, and the highest standards of customer satisfaction. With this background, the Procella team was delighted when ‘Surrey Cinema’ by DPP Smart Home & Electrical took home one of the most hotly contested awards, ‘Best Home Cinema Over £50K’. Procella Audio speakers were the backbone of the audio experience in this highperformance cinema.
Dominic Parete, Director of DPP Smart Home & Electrical, explains, “This project was for an existing client. We had already completed work on a multi-room audio system during the renovation of their kitchen, dining room and wine cellar. I had an initial meeting with the client to go through what they wanted. We discussed some options with them and produced a 3D design of how the room would look, incorporating their colour schemes and ideas alongside our knowledge and creative input.”
Dominic adds, “They loved going through the design process with us and were excited to see the mock-ups we had produced. The only real issue was ensuring that we could achieve this in a room that also incorporated a bar/ games area at the rear, without compromising the cinema experience.”
Obviously, with a project of this type, the key is selecting solutions that are going to deliver the required performance while also coping with the design challenges.
Dominic reveals, “The main area of the room is used as a home cinema, with highperformance AV using a Sony projector and Procella speakers. We also used Rako lighting for creating scenes and controlling the blinds and curtains. Fabric lining was employed throughout most of the room. There are two rows of FrontRow leather cinema chairs, built onto a custom platform of our own construction, which also houses a secondary TV serving the back of the room (bar/games area). This platform also acts as a baffle wall, with diffusion diverting audio back to the seated position for some clever audio management.”
In this varied and dynamic space, Procella Audio was chosen to deliver the required sound quality and provide the flexibility the installation team needed. Specifically, three P8s were used for the LCR channels, four P5Vs for the surrounds, and a further four P5iCWs for overhead Atmos.
Dominic says, “We chose Procella for their high SPL and low-distortion levels, suitable for the room size and the number of seats. They needed to maintain a high SPL because they were to be placed behind the fabric we were installing. The Procella speakers were easy to install after some slight adaptation using the brand’s supplied angled brackets.” The Procella range also comes with threads ready for Vesa 100 brackets, furthering their flexibility of installation.
There were plenty of challenges presented by the room, including its construction and shape, but the installation team was determined to deliver the very best results and achieve the CEDIA RP22 Standard. Procella’s involvement was key.
SETTING THE STANDARD
Ben Lancaster, European Sales Manager, Procella Audio, explains, “We went through many variations of the specification to achieve the right performance for the distance from the screen to the seating position. For this, the P8 was ideal, while leaving good headroom for overall performance. The P5Vs were chosen for their slim profile, as they would be visible in the room, while still delivering plenty of performance as surround speakers. The P5iCWs were selected due to the restricted ceiling height (common in UK homes), requiring in-ceiling installation. The great benefit of the P5iCW is the angled baffle and square cut-out, allowing the speaker to be rotated so the tweeter can be aimed towards the Main Listening Position (MLP), improving output and performance.”
Dominic points out that Procella’s Elliptical Waveguide was particularly crucial in delivering controlled directivity, not only for the MLP but also providing strong dispersion and performance for all the other seating positions.
Ben describes this technology, “Each speaker uses a Procella-designed Elliptical Waveguide, which, along with carefully selected crossover frequencies, produces constant power response with superior dispersion characteristics and uniform coverage over a large seating area.”
One of the main challenges was the centre speaker location, as there is a window seat where it would ideally be placed. Again, the wide dispersion characteristics of Procella’s Waveguide technology came to the fore, as the team were able to angle the centre speaker to provide the best coverage for the room.
Valuable input did not just come from the supply of Procella speakers, but also in the form
of support from the Procella team. Dominic underlines that Procella was involved from the early stages and created multiple different systems to deliver the best combination of performance and price.
Ben adds, “We also helped specify the AV processor to create the best synergy for this system. We frequently help dealers with speaker layout drawings to ensure perfect positioning for projects. However, in this case, the team at DPP had this in hand.”
All the hard work and Procella’s performance have certainly paid off, as the customer states, “The overall room exceeded expectations, which were already high. After spending time in our friends’ cinema rooms, our room outperforms anything we’ve ever heard or seen before!”

CONSEXTO BUILDS SUCCESS WITH SNAP ONE
Embracing luxury home cinemas, exclusive villas and automation to showcase a fantastic collection of luxury cars, Portuguese integration expert, Consexto, is using Snap One brand, Control4, to enhance the lifestyle and experience of its customers. EI takes a closer look at two extraordinary projects.
In 2021, the owner of this beautiful luxury villa on The Algarve engaged Consexto to create a remarkable luxury cinema at his home. The incredible space reflected the owner’s love for a famous, charismatic spy, with interior styling and smart automation paying homage in eyecatching ways. This included a motorised double door entrance that hides the cinema behind a bookshelf and is voice activated to open; an automated pop-out drinks’ holder from within
the cinema seats; and, the ability to add seating from beneath the floor and reconfigure the space through motorisation. This luxurious cinema, reliant on the Control4 platform, is a very special place.
It’s no surprise that the owner has turned to Consexto again to optimise the experience of two other key spaces at the villa. This time it is two garage areas which are home to an extensive collection of highly collectible cars
and motorbikes. Once more, Control4 is at the forefront of this impressive installation.
Consexto has used Control4 automation, together with smart lighting and invisible audio technology, to create two spectacular areas which showcase the vehicles in all their glory, but also allow the spaces to double up as an event venue, hosting photoshoots, corporate hospitality events and filming locations. Individual spaces, some defined by colour changing KNX lighting and rotating turntables controlled by Control4, perfectly position the cars, while the clean, contemporary décor ensures the vehicles are treated as works of art, receiving all the attention they deserve. Control4 is also the interface for operating a motorised retracting staircase which enables guests and residents to move easily between levels as well as an automated privacy wall which means different areas can be kept separate. A high-end audio system, complete with invisible loudspeakers which are concealed within the walls, allows the owner to provide a discreet soundtrack throughout each area. This ensures the owner can access music through Control4 when enjoying the collection but also offers the versatility for the garages to be used as an events space with a difference.
A Control4 system, consisting of a CA10 Controller with seven T4 Touchscreens, located at key points around each garage – the same model of touchscreen that also controls the cinema – manages the entire setup. With high levels of processing power and memory, the fault-tolerant CA10 offers premium system reliability, while the T4 Touchscreens offer a high-resolution screen and a choice of intuitive GUIs to enhance the experience still further. The automated staircase, privacy wall, turntables and garage entry systems are all handled by Control4, interfacing with PLC drivers and industrial automation to ensure smooth, seamless and reliable operation.
The garages are also on the same network as the cinema, so 210 Switches from Snap One brand, Araknis, are shared by both spaces. Lighting is cleverly used throughout the space to highlight the cars while also creating an ambience that works for the high-end events being hosted in the garages. All lights are controlled by KNX with an IP router used to make the interface between Control4 and KNX.
“We were delighted to work on such an amazing project,” says Joao Vitoriano, Consexto’s CTO. “It challenged our automation skills and our imagination as we worked to deliver the functionality that was required. Everything combines perfectly to create luxurious, elegant and sophisticated yet multi-functional spaces that meet the needs of the homeowner, as well as event guests and corporate clients. We love it and our client does too!”
Elsewhere on Portugal’s beautiful Algarve coast, One Green Way offers luxury, comfort and relaxation in a prestigious gated development. Technology is helping to meet these aspirations thanks to a comprehensive smart home system for every villa designed and installed by Consexto, and featuring Snap One brands Control4, OvrC, Triad, Wattbox and Araknis.

This attractive private development, which curves along the resort’s North Course golf course, offers a selection of contemporary four-, five- and six-bedroom villas. It boasts private landscaped gardens and shared neighbourhood spaces to foster community, sensitive landscaping and thoughtful architecture, and a wealth of amenities, including restaurants, sports facilities, a shopping plaza, clubhouse and spa. Throughout this premium development, the focus has been firmly placed on ensuring residents are able to enjoy their time at One Green Way, with the latest smart home technology deployed and integrated within the clean, contemporary lines of each villa to enhance the comfort, security and entertainment of residents.
Consexto created a solution for each villa to meet these goals built on the Control4 platform.
“One Green Way shows how a luxury lifestyle and elegant interior design can be enhanced by smart technology,” explains Joao Vitoriano, Consexto’s CTO. “All systems are seamlessly integrated and controlled with Control4 which is a pleasure for residents to use. The result is that the technology enhances the lifestyle for every resident at One Green Way. It also represents a great and reliable solution for the developer which fully meets the expectation levels of residents.”
Using Control4, residents can access and control indoor and outdoor audio, TVs and home cinema operation, lighting, door entry security and heating and cooling systems. Each villa benefits from a Control4 CORE3 controller, which brings speed and performance for instantaneous, interactive control of all technology systems within the property. Residents interact with the system via Control4 T4 touchscreens at key locations while Control4 Halo remotes in the 5.2.2 home cinema and living room offer further control flexibility.
Two Triad SA1 high-resolution streaming amplifiers are used to deliver music to different areas of each villa as well as to the outdoor
spaces via high-performance invisible speakers. In addition, 520 Indoor Access Points and 510 Outdoor Access Points from Snap One brand Araknis support high network capacity and guarantee reliability, while an Araknis 310 Router helps to keep networks secure. Power management for the technology is provided by Wattbox while Control4 Door Station provides residents with an effective and secure video door entry system. OvrC remote monitoring and management of the system ensures that Consexto can effectively keep an eye on every system in every villa at One Green Way, updating and fixing issues before they become major problems.
One Green Way is in development with a number of villas already completed and occupied, and the entire project scheduled for completion in 2026.

SEAHORSES: A COASTAL HAVEN ENHANCED BY SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY
Using Niko Home Control as the basis, this striking cliff top new build embraced the 21st century with easy to use and fully supported home automation woven expertly into the fabric of the building. This install also picked up the Best Whole Home Integration Project, at this year’s Smart Building Awards.
Perched along the Southwest Coast Path in Maenporth, Cornwall, Seahorses looks to deliver a fusion of coastal elegance and cuttingedge technology. Nestled near Falmouth, this new build (which replaced an existing bungalow) was created under the guidance of architect and designers, Iris Projects. The home was created to be the owner’s retirement home, but also needed to accommodate fee paying holidaymakers in the high-end holiday let market when the owners were not at home. At the heart of the home lies the Niko Home Control system, orchestrating each aspect of the home’s functionality.
Andy Moss, owner of Moss Technical Services, official distributor for Niko in the UK, explains, “Ultraline sliding doors are a major part of the home to take advantage of the amazing views. We supply smart locks for the company, and it was they who introduced us to the home’s owner.
“He wanted to create a retirement home, but also be able to rent the property out when he was not staying there, so the system needed to be very simple to use and be able to switch modes from ‘renting’ to ‘at home’ mode.”
Andy adds, “In renting mode, the system restricts access to certain areas and aspects
of the home such as the customer’s personal areas like their wardrobe. We can also access the system remotely to update functionality, and check system health at any time, making the system flexible, efficient and reliable.”
Andy also explains, “This Niko Home Control installation is a BUS wired full installation, but because the use of the property was changed to become a part time holiday let after the house was finished, we were able to provide the locking of the wardrobes and various other additional control elements by adding Niko Home Control wireless Zigbee controls to provide a seamlessly integrated addition to the BUS system already installed.”
Integrated lighting in the home and in the grounds is controlled with internal and external wall controls and easy to use interactive touch screens. Discreetly integrated motion and presence detection (including exterior IP rated units) ensures that much of the lighting functionality is automated and based on whether the space is occupied or not.
Niko’s Pure range of wall controls and interactive touch screens provide the intuitive and attractive control points, offering easy and fast access to the home’s different settings and moods. Seven-inch interactive screens are available to control video entry and delver deeper into the home’s abilities should the need arise.
With 12 underfloor heating zones and towel radiators managed by Niko Home Control, Seahorses ensures optimal comfort year-round. Residents can adjust temperatures to suit their preferences, creating a cozy retreat regardless of the season.
From automated blind adjustments to ventilation regulation, Niko Home Control
also empowers the owner to optimise natural light and airflow, fostering a pleasing indoor environment tailored to individual preferences.
Video gate entry, door locking mechanisms, fire alarm, and intruder alarm systems also integrate with the Niko Home Control ecosystem, safeguarding Seahorses and providing residents with peace of mind.
ELEVATING ENTERTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY
The home also offers various entertainment options. A Sonos Multi-Room Audio system provides music for every mood. The Sonos system also works with Amina speakers in the main entertainment/gaming space.
Niko Home Control offers a wide range of options to stay in command
With centralised SkyQ and CCTV distribution courtesy of HDAynwhere, Seahorses also ensures that residents enjoy seamless access to their favourite entertainment options and can access feeds from the security cameras too. High-speed wireless and wired networking, both indoors and outdoors, courtesy in the main by Netgear and Ubiquity, ensures that residents remain connected to the digital world, allowing residents to work, play and stay connected.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION, EFFORTLESS CONTROL
Despite its advanced technology, Seahorses remains user-friendly, thanks to its full app and voice control capabilities. Whether adjusting lighting, setting the temperature, or queuing up a favourite playlist, residents can manage every aspect of their home environment with a simple voice command or tap of their smartphone.

ARCADE FIRE!
This smoking hot project underlines that hospitality projects can come in many forms and as massive arcade fans, we couldn’t resist this total fun fest created by install company Maven.
Director at Maven, Rob Simmonds explains, “This is a commercial application within a high-end residential setting. If ever there was a pure definition of an adults’ playground, this basement bar and games area has to be it. The initial brief was for the space to have a functioning bar area, ‘sports-bar-esque’ TV screens (without being tacky!) and a sound system that could be used for background music or deliver the potential to compete with nightclubs when it came to party time.”
The system head-end components comprising of Control4 audio distribution, Wyrestorm NHD video over IP solution and Kaleidescape media servers are all brought together as part of a Control4 control system housed in a Middle Atlantic rack at the foot of the lobby’s spiral staircase. In addition, Lutron Homeworks QS provides user friendly lighting control from any of the eight keypads in the area.
The main bar/games area has six Artcoustic SL8-4 wall mounted loudspeakers complimented by four in-ceiling speakers as
fill-in audio to ensure there are no dead spots. A further four Artcoustic Impact 2 dual 10in long throw subwoofers cover the entire area with deep bass. Two are positioned to the rear of the room and two are recessed into the joinery columns flanking the bar at the front. These have acoustic treatment within them ensuring the bass is dispersed forward into the room with no leakage behind.
Rob adds some more detail, “Custom grilles were made to match the wall speakers above, resulting in a perfect aesthetic finish. Access to all music streaming services and dedicated Kaleidescape music servers is via the in-wall Control4 10in touchscreen, or of course via the app or Neeo remote control.
“Three Samsung 32in commercial TVs are located behind the bar on mirrored panelling; these are able to display any of the 12 video sources available independently and each has its own dedicated Kaleidescape player. The reason for this is because the client has a lot of vintage sporting events such as classic football matches and boxing fights on their server, so when there is a sporting event or the big fight, the central screen will show the live fight for example, with the flanking screens replaying old fights as part of a homemade build-up to the main event, with the audio of the central screen being played throughout the sound system.
“This is made simple to achieve with custom buttons programmed so the client can select the event and the system is then setup as a sequence with minimal effort. We have also programmed a simple swipe left or right to control either the left or right hand screen.”
COOL AND COZY
In the corner there is a snug area with a separate TV and Artcoustic 2.1 audio system (which can be linked to the main area’s system) dedicated for playing retro games consoles. Should the
owner or any visitor want to play the real thing there is an abundance of restored original arcade machines ranging from Paperboy, Afterburn, Outrun and Moto GP, there is also a fully working flight simulator machine – and all free to use! A pool table, air-hockey, table football and American ice hockey machines are also playable under the custom neon-frosted lighting. A short walk past a side room, currently home to six pinball machines, will eventually be a VR area with 360º moving floor.
Rob enthuses, “Although fairly discreet in aesthetics, this audio system has to be heard to be believed – it is a monster! Walking around the area, there is a very well-balanced audio, purposely at head height and calibrated perfectly with the abundance of bass. The system in here is not fatiguing in any way even when turned up to a light-fitting-rattling level –which happens often!
“Speaking of which, all lighting is set to preset levels depending on whether the room is used for entertaining, gaming or nightclub mode! Frosted neon lighting over the arcade
machines completes the retro yet modern feel to this area.
Furthermore, an ‘Arcades’ button on the Lutron keypad activates all of the sockets for powering up all of the arcade machines, along with the six pinball machines in the adjoining room. A simple double-tap of the ‘Room Off’ button not only fades all lighting off, but also shuts down the AV system along with all of the arcade machines – simple.
Rob concludes, “The client absolutely loves this area for entertaining and it gets used most days (and nights) as there is so much to do in

here. You cannot help but become a child in here with all of the nostalgic arcade games and memorabilia.
“One of the most important things in this area is that it is so simple and easy to use. Too often if a system is complicated it immediately poses a sticking point so doesn’t get used. But with all of the bespoke customisation and ease of use built-in, whenever the client wants to add a feature to set the room up, it is simple to achieve. Although this is intentionally a fun room, there is a very serious system on-tap – as well as the beer behind the fully functioning bar!”

GALLERY OF DELIGHTS
KEF recently opened its flagship showroom in the heart of the nation’s capital. EI presents a tour around this landmark platform for the brand and the AV sector.
Carried out by Nucleus, this project presented a serious challenge in terms of its scale and complexity. Nucleus was founded nine years ago by Durgesh Sinh. The company grew from an IT consultancy that Durgesh was a partner in and organically got involved with the CI market. Based in Borehamwood and servicing the surrounding areas and London, the company also on occasion takes on national and international projects. The team is made up of 10 experienced professionals able to take on any project the CI world can throw at them.
Durgesh explains, “Nucleus were introduced to key members of the KEF Team, who had acquired three floors of the central London property. The first floor had been converted into KEF’s London office, where the ground floor and basement were earmarked to build a showroom and experience space.
“The plan was to create a showroom, but instead of simply building rooms of kit on demo, we wanted to create a cohesive space that was fully integrated and installed in the same manner as it would be in a high end residential custom install, while still operating as a commercial space, and have the flexibility to be utilised as event space for KEF and collaborative brands. Like all projects, there
were construction issues and design decisions that lead to changes over the course of the project, from layout changes, to rack locations and everything in between.”
The space is divided into several distinct areas, each serving a different purpose.
MAIN GALLERY AND EVENT SPACE
The Main Gallery and Event Space serves as the primary welcoming area and multifunctional hub of ‘KMG London’. It showcases the KEF product line and doubles as an event space with a seating area for the Coffee Shop. Performance-wise, this space is equipped with a 10.8.8 Dolby Atmos system featuring KEF LS50 Meta, Ci200RR THX ceiling speakers, and KC92 subwoofers, driven by a Trinnov Altitude 32 processor and amplification. This setup delivers a versatile audio experience capable of high sound pressure levels for events, immersive Atmos playback and live performances, aligning with KEF’s high standards. The flexibility to reconfigure audio setups, along with multiple data, audio and video I/O points, enables a wide range of event and demonstration possibilities.
KEFé
The KEFé area is designed to function seamlessly with the overall audio experience while allowing for conversational ambiance. Equipped with four KEF ceiling speakers, this zone operates independently from the main system to maintain appropriate volume levels for a relaxing café environment. This strategic separation ensures that guests can enjoy music without the audio overshadowing conversation, enhancing the customer experience in this casual setting.
PODCAST STUDIO
The Podcast Studio is acoustically treated to create an optimal environment for recording and broadcasting. It features KEF LS50Wireless II bookshelf speakers and KEF Mu7 headphones for precise audio monitoring, with provisions for additional speakers if needed. THE CHALLENGE
Durgesh explains, “One of the primary challenges was designing a space that could seamlessly transition between its various functions: showroom, podcast studio, event space, training hub and coffee shop—without compromising performance. This required meticulous planning of the layout and AV infrastructure to ensure each zone could operate independently yet harmoniously when needed. Balancing acoustics for diverse uses, from quiet listening areas to high-energy live performances, was a complex task that necessitated advanced acoustic treatments and dynamic audio calibration.
Strong networking and future proofing were also part of the project
“The need to future-proof the installation while maintaining high performance presented significant technical hurdles. The project demanded a scalable infrastructure that could accommodate foreseeable changes in technology and usage. This involved installing flexible data, audio and video connections throughout the facility, ensuring that new components could be integrated with minimal disruption. Achieving this level
of adaptability required careful selection of versatile and robust control systems, like Crestron, that could handle the complexity of the multifunctional environment.”
Getting the acoustics and performance to the right standard was also no mean task.
Durgesh reveals, “Each area of the facility had unique acoustic requirements, from the highly dampened podcast studio to the immersive Dolby Atmos setup in the
Main Event Space and Staircase. Ensuring optimal sound quality across these varied environments required advanced acoustic modelling and precise speaker placement. For example, the stairwell’s unconventional Atmos layout needed custom content to fully exploit its potential, which was a challenge to implement within the standard Atmos specifications.”
Control also had to be spot on, as Durgesh comments, “A major challenge was integrating the various control systems into a unified, userfriendly interface. The facility’s diverse needs— ranging from lighting control with brightness and colour temperature adjustments to managing multiple audio zones and video endpoints— demanded a sophisticated and customisable control solution. Developing a seamless interface for Crestron that could manage DALI Type 8 lighting fixtures through a custom protocol bridge was a notable technical feat, ensuring that the complex lighting requirements were met without sacrificing usability.”
Great aesthetics across the space was also paramount. “Incorporating advanced technical features while maintaining a high level of finish aligned with brand values was another challenge,” says Durgesh. “This included hiding extensive cabling and AV hardware within the industrial luxury design theme of the ground floor and the contemporary high-end residential style of the basement. Custom solutions, such as bespoke bookshelf brackets for the speakers and discrete I/O points for AV connections, were essential to achieving the desired aesthetic without compromising on performance.”
The project included many diverse requirements including a podcast studio
A mix of high-performance AV, acoustic treatment and aesthetics was needed throughout
Establishing a robust, segmented network that could support high-bandwidth applications, secure guest access, and reliable data capture for marketing analytics was also critical. Integrating this with the building’s HVAC, security and alarm systems into a single overarching control platform posed technical challenges, particularly in ensuring that the network remained secure and stable under varying loads and use cases.
High-end audio is also a feature of the space and implementing the systems, such as the Trinnov Altitude 32 for Dolby Atmos and the complex multi-channel setups, required precise calibration and tuning to achieve the desired sound quality. The project demanded careful coordination between different audio processing and amplification components to ensure that the immersive audio experiences met the high expectations set by KEF and its brand standards.
Lastly, the team needed to deliver a system that was not only high-performing but also easy to maintain and service. The solution required
careful selection of hardware and software components that were reliable and supported remote diagnostics and updates, reducing potential downtime and ensuring consistent performance across all areas.
By addressing these challenges with innovative solutions and meticulous planning, the project successfully delivered a multifunctional space that meets the high standards of performance, adaptability and aesthetics required by KEF and its target audience.
PUSHING THE ENVELOPE
Taking on a project like this also meant getting the very best out of all the products and systems installed, so the cinema was professionally calibrated and tuned to achieve optimal performance. The audio calibration was conducted by David Meyerowitz , Technical Sales Manager International at Trinnov and the video calibration was handled by Ricky Jennings, Director and Owner at Kalibrate, both well-known experts in their respective fields.Durgesh explains, “David from Trinnov
meticulously calibrated the Dolby Atmos system, optimising levels and EQ to ensure that sound is accurately reproduced across the entire listening area. This process helps to neutralise the effects of room acoustics, resulting in a balanced and immersive sound field that aligns with KEF’s high standards. The calibration also fine-tunes integration among different audio modes, such as incorporating Hi-Fi two-channel (Muons) and reference cinema speakers, ensuring seamless transitions and cohesive performance.”
Trinnov’s WaveForming technology was employed to manage low frequencies using the 14 subwoofers in the Ultimate Experience Room. This technique ensures consistent bass response throughout the room, eliminating common issues like uneven or excessive bass, thus providing a smoother and more engaging listening experience.
Durgesh adds, “Ricky from Kalibrate focused on the video aspects of the cinema, using precision calibration to adjust the Envy madVR, including colour accuracy, contrast, brightness and sharpness. This ensures that the visual elements match the high fidelity of the audio, delivering a truly immersive cinematic experience. Ricky’s expertise guarantees that the projector’s output aligns perfectly with the room’s screen size and lighting conditions, enhancing image clarity and detail.”
Durgesh adds, “The combined efforts of David and Ricky ensured that both audio and video elements work harmoniously, providing a synchronised AV experience that maximixes the potential of the KEF products and associated hardware. This holistic approach ensures that whether it’s a quiet dialogue scene or an actionpacked sequence, both sound and visuals are presented with unmatched clarity and impact.
“The calibrations were tailored to the unique acoustic and visual requirements of each space within the project, from the Main Event Space to the Ultimate Experience Room. This customisation allows the facility to support a wide range of functions—from live performances and cinema screenings to professional podcast recordings—without compromising on performance quality.”
So, is it possible to pick a favourite aspect of an install like this?
Durgesh replies, “One of the standout aspects of the completed project is the Ultimate Experience Room. This space perfectly encapsulates the project’s ethos of pushing boundaries and delivering the highest levels of audio and visual performance. The room’s ability to switch seamlessly between a reference cinema, an ultimate two-channel Hi-Fi setup, and a hybrid mode that blends the two, offers a truly unique and personalised experience that showcases the versatility and potential of KEF products.
The intricate calibration work by David from Trinnov and Ricky from Kalibrate elevates this room beyond a typical demo space— transforming it into an immersive environment that genuinely captivates and inspires.
“The integration of Trinnov’s waveforming technology for precise low-frequency control, along with the impeccable video calibration, ensures that every detail of sound and vision is presented at its absolute best. What makes this room particularly special is its ability to
provide a ‘wow’ factor for every visitor, whether they are seasoned audiophiles or newcomers to high-end AV systems. The Ultimate Experience Room is not just about showcasing technology; it’s about creating memorable experiences that connect emotionally with the audience.
“Ultimately, the ability to offer a flexible, top-tier audio-visual experience that can adapt to various needs while consistently delivering outstanding performance makes this space my favourite part of the project. It’s a testament to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved and serves as a true representation of what high-end AV can achieve.”

CROMER’S CROWNING GLORY: THE WHITE HORSE
Ribble AV undertook a fantastic project, developing the AV and automation systems at The White Horse near the popular coastal town of Cromer, North Norfolk. KNX, Artcoustic, Control4 and Anthem all contributed to the transformation of this much-loved local attraction.
While the prize for Best Commercial Integration Project at the recent Smart Building Awards was claimed by Snap One for the Joali Being Resort, we must confess a real soft spot for this excellent project by Ribble AV, particularly as it was the company’s first fully commercial project and has led to more work for the same customer.
Tom Helm, Managing Director of Ribble AV, explained in his award entry, “The White Horse is a bar and restaurant in Cromer, Norfolk. It has just undergone a significant refurbishment after one of our residential clients purchased it. We were approached to provide lighting and HVAC
control, audio, video distribution, a network with guest access and CCTV.”
The brief from the client was that the operation had to be simple enough for any staff member to use. All of the tech needed to complement the high-end interior and deliver visually discreet, high-quality audio, but without excessive volume due to complaints from a disgruntled neighbour who had already filed complaints with the council. Don’t you just hate it when people move next door to a pub and then complain about living next door to a pub! The system also needed to accommodate and distribute the feeds from two Sky boxes to three screens.
Tom says, “After seeing the renders of the interior design and the amount of glass on the ceiling, we knew we had to select some form of on-wall speakers. Therefore, Artcoustic seemed the obvious choice because their speaker design fit the space perfectly. Working with our partners at Artcoustic and being aware of the noise constraints, we specified 16 Evolve 1 speakers and 6 Sub Z subwoofers (hidden in bench seating) across the restaurant and bar, which are the smallest speakers in their range.
“We powered these with an Anthem MDX16 so that we had simple control and audio
switching. We could also rely on ARC room correction to achieve the best possible sound. Overall, the end result for the audio ticks all the boxes for delivering great, consistent sound wherever you are seated in the restaurant and definitely looks the part!”
Tom adds, “We also installed a pair of ceiling speakers in the bathrooms that play audiobooks; this was an unusual request that worked extremely well. All streaming is handled by Sonos Ports, as they integrate perfectly with the venue’s licensed music streaming subscription.
“We knew that the TVs in this venue would be off more than on due to the restaurant setting, so we specified Samsung Frame TVs that display seaside-themed artwork throughout the day. Distribution is handled by an HDA MHUB.”
With over 50 circuits of lighting, five zones of heating, and a zone of air conditioning throughout the venue, KNX was a strong choice as the backbone of much of the project. All LED strip circuits were handled with DALI to keep things simple and ensure smooth dimming.
Tom explains, “We provided the staff with four editable scenes for different times of day and events, which are operated from a backof-house keypad or bar Control4 touch panel. However, with the client wanting super simple control of everything for the potentially high turnover of staff, we utilised contact closure outputs from the alarm panel straight into the KNX system. This means that when the first member of staff opens up and disarms the alarm, all the lights and music are turned on, and everything switches off when the last member leaves and sets the alarm. Therefore, the staff only need to manage the music source, volume, and TV channels.”
Challenges arose not just from the technical demands of the project, but from logistics as well. Tom reveals, “With the project being so far away in Norfolk (we are based in Preston), it made sense to choose products that we fully understand and know will just work. Hence the use of KNX for all the BMS and lighting, Ruckus for networking, Control4 for control, Anthem for amplification, and HDA for video distribution. We also ensured we had multiple ways to remotely access the system via router VPN, KNX VPN using a Gira S1, and Control4 OVRC.”
Tom concludes, “I’m confident we fully met our client’s brief and even surpassed expectations with the final outcome. The bar is open seven days a week, and we’ve had zero teething problems since opening. The client has
now bought another bar, Bernie’s in Cromer, and has already instructed us to carry out all the works on that one as well. This is a testament to the success of this project.
“Overall, this was an incredible project to be involved with, and it was our first full commercial project. It certainly wasn’t easy, and blood, sweat, and tears went into it, but I couldn’t be prouder of how the finished
result turned out and the level of installation we achieved, with all work being carried out in-house by our small team of four. Ultimately, our scope was really quite vast, and I believe our hard work and excellent results deserve recognition.”
