There is some exciting very exciting news this month as we bring back an old friend, Intelligent Homes magazine; a unique way to communicate with potential customers right in their own homes. Those with a good memory will recall that Intelligent Homes made a brief debut in the early days of Essential IInstall - a consumer-facing direct-mailed publication created to deliver awareness of the smart home, luxury AV and home cinema market. Getting EI to its dominant position in the trade sector was a big task, and at the time something had to give and unfortunately for Intelligent Homes, this initiative had to take a back seat. Now, it is back with a bang at the perfect time, creating more awareness amongst consumers. The basic idea is to create a fantastic glossy coffee table book promoting our industry, four times a year to 25,000 households every time the magazine is published. There will be marketing opportunities attached, but for our purposes here we wanted to talk about editorial content.

THE SUBJECTS

HOW TO GET INVOLVED!

Articles should be between 600-1200

The in-house team creating Intelligent Homes will put our shoulder to the wheel by creating exclusive content for the new and important industry initiative, however we will be asking the industry to get involved and contribute articles gathered directly from their most experienced and knowledgeable team members. If you are an installer, distributor, manufacturer, or a service provider involved in the smart home, home cinema or luxury AV market, we want you to contribute.

In each of the four issues produced each year, Intelligent Homes will invite industry

stakeholders

articles

on

the

to

contribute

following

subjects:

Home Cinema, Music Only Systems, The Smart Home, Lighting and Shading, Case Studies.

THE TONE Intelligent Homes will be sent to 25,000 homes each time the publication is mailed. The aim of the publication is to act as an introduction to the sector for those who have little to no knowledge of our industry and to encourage people to engage with the market. So, the tone of the articles

NEWS ANTIFERENCE AND GLOBAL INVACOM SIGN DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT Antiference has announced it is forming a new partnership with Global Invacom to exclusively supply and support FibreIRS (FIRS) products in the UK and Ireland. This new agreement enables continuity of supply of these market leading products to the professional trade. Global Invacom designed and developed in-building FibreIRS products in 2004 and will continue to manufacture the products in the company’s own facility and supply them to Antiference to distribute in the UK and Ireland. Antiference was identified by Global Invacom as the ideal partner to distribute FIRS products for several crucial reasons: Antiference has ample warehouse space in its facility in Lichfield, Staffordshire to handle the stock effectively. The company also has a county-wide network of independent wholesalers and distributors who supply the trade with professional products and Global FIRS products seamlessly fit into this system of distribution. Furthermore, Antiference can provide a complete support service including system design, advice, plus assistance during and after the installation. This service is carried out with the company’s highly experienced technical team, headed up by industry fibre expert, Matt Presdee who worked for Global Invacom for 10 years and was involved in developing certain products in the range. Matt has spent many years working with these products, designing systems and supporting them so is best placed to offer a comprehensive support service to the professional trade. The partners argue that this new partnership firmly places Global Invacom FIRS products at the forefront of the market with a reputable and longstanding company in Antiference offering a solid supply service as well as a reliable and complete support service.

Global Invacom’s FIRS range, when first developed, pioneered RF optical fibre distribution technology with the use of a single laser system which simplified the process and brought the cost of the systems down significantly. This new process had an overwhelmingly positive response in the industry, with installers adopting the new system and enjoying all that it brings. Installers were able to attend training courses and learn best practices for the installation of these products, including the handling of the fibre and highlighting the importance of cleaning the cables etc. These courses were often hosted by the independent distributors and delivered by the Global Invacom technical team. With Antiference as supply partner to Global Invacom, training courses on the products will continue to be available, enabling installers to learn how to handle fibre products. TRINNOV DEMOED NEW PATENT-PENDING PRESSURIZATION MODE AT ISE 2024

WaveForming will become available to all Altitude owners later in 2024

Trinnov Audio has announced that a new patent was filed to protect its latest acoustic innovation, which was introduced at ISE 2024. A year after the introduction of WaveForming and its unique way of controlling wave propagation, Trinnov Audio is introducing WaveForming’s new patent-pending ‘Pressurization’ mode. The company’s active acoustic technology was revealed in an active 13.14.6 channel home cinema system at ISE 2024 in partnership with Krix, Barco and Officina Acustica. In the last 12 months, Trinnov has selectively released WaveForming to expert partners and a few qualified beta testers with a demanding, professional and methodical approach. This has enabled Trinnov to refine key parameters and confirm the fundamental superiority of its approach, said the company. Now, a year after its initial introduction, Trinnov Audio says it has increased the performance gap with the introduction of Pressurization, its new patent-pending technology. Pressurization adds to the range of active acoustic technologies from Trinnov Audio, making

available, for the first time, a technology to address each of the different acoustic behaviours in home cinemas. Pressurization leverages the power of every subwoofer installed in compliance with Waveforming’s subwoofer placement guidelines, maximising performance below the room’s first mode, adding impact, pressure and efficiency, including infrasonic bass. Trinnov said that propagation does not merely mitigate but eliminates the room’s modal response between the first mode and up to 150Hz, where room modes are the most problematic. In this region, the acoustics are perfectly predictable from a physical standpoint, which enables WaveForming to control 100% of the sound field and simply remove room modes. Propagation leverages multiple exclusive concepts from Trinnov, including multiple sources and multiple controllers. The Optimiser performs several functions: It uses both Pressurization and Propagation modes of WaveForming to achieve global balance and optimal performance in the time and frequency domains across the entire bandwidth. It also mitigates broader acoustic issues which are more perceptual and complex, ranging from electro-acoustic problems such as active-crossover alignment and diffraction issues to psychoacoustic issues by treating the direct sound, early reflection, and power responses of the room (diffuse field) with multiple appropriate techniques.

LENBROOK MEDIA GROUP FORMED TO COMMERCIALISE BLUOS, MQA AND SCL6 The Lenbrook Group of Companies, owner of brands like NAD Electronics, PSB Speakers and Bluesound and the BluOS hi-res multiroom platform, has created a new business unit, Lenbrook Media Group. The new entity has been formed to more effectively enable the commercialisation and development of Lenbrook’s content management solutions, as well as pursue new opportunities that fit Lenbrook’s vision to offer increased choice to music fans and enthusiasts for quality audio. With the BluOS content management platform at its core, this group will also oversee the growth of content encoding solutions MQA and SCL6, which Lenbrook acquired in the autumn of 2023. “The acquisition of MQA’s assets complemented our existing BluOS platform and supports creators in the recording studio with capturing and delivering directly and in the highest quality, their art into the homes of music lovers,” said Gordon Simmonds, President and CEO of The Lenbrook Group of Companies. “Creating the Lenbrook Media Group allows us to fully capitalise on this unique position by giving it focus, and putting the right strategies, structure, and resources in place.” Lenbrook Media Group will be led by newlyappointed Vice President and General Manager, Mike Jbara, the former MQA CEO and Warner Music executive. “We worked closely with Mike when he led MQA and were impressed by his understanding of the complete content chain from creation

RETRA BOARD PROPOSES CLOSURE The Retra board proposes closure of the trade association – members will vote on next steps. Retra has announced that its board has taken the decision to close the trade association, but, if a proposal goes ahead, Retra will be absorbed into BIRA (British Independent Retailers Association), which will create a new division dedicated to electrical retailers and repair agents. The association says that the decision to close Retra, which represents independent electrical retailers, has been made with careful consideration by the board and it is intended that as part of BIRA, Retra will better serve the needs of its members in the ever-changing landscape of the electrical retailing industry. BIRA is a bigger trade association than Retra and it will continue to provide the current Retra support with some additional enhanced services that are not currently offered. The current cost of BIRA membership is £205 per year, which is around half that of Retra membership. A vote took place by Retra members at an EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) on February 1 2024 at 11am to decide the outcome, at the time of going to press the outcome is unkowm, but should the decision be ratified Retra will pay the BIRA membership cost of the first year for its members, and any monies left in the Retra bank accounts will be returned to paid-up members. As part of the process, Retra’s insurance business, Retracare, will be sold. Although nothing has been formally signed, the board is discussing

the sale of Retracare to Pacifica Group. Retra intends for the business to continue and Pacifica is committed to enhancing the range of services on offer. Commenting on the announcement, Retra CEO, Howard Saycell, said, “This decision has not been taken lightly. Every effort has been made to sustain the membership numbers, but sadly, the decline has continued and has accelerated. “The board has decided that it is no longer viable for Retra to remain a stand-alone entity. If the proposal is approved by the members at the EGM, Retra will close. I know this may come as a shock, but we hope to put alternative arrangements in place for the members of Retra and Retracare to continue.” Retra retra.co.uk Proposals are afoot to close Retra, reveals Howard Saycell

ESSENTIAL AWE

DENON AND MARANTZ, NOW WITH DIRAC LIVE ROOM CORRECTION FULL BANDWIDTH & DIRAC LIVE BASIS CONTROL MULTI SUBWOOFER Dirac has announced that its Live Bass Control acoustic software is now available for selected Denon & Marantz products, providing exceptional low-frequency control for single and multi-subwoofer home cinema installations. Distributor AWE explains more. Live Bass Control, which offers consistent and accurate bass performance, is available in eight existing mid-range to high-end Denon & Marantz units available from AWE, as well as future models. James Drummie – Home Cinema Product Manager, AWE, comments, “With multiple subwoofers common place in home cinema designs, manual calibration is tricky, takes an enormous amount of time and, without practice, results can be sketchy. Using Dirac Live Bass Control takes the guess work out of this process allowing you to calibrate the system to give the most uniform response across the entire seating area.”

The key benefit for installers is that Dirac Live Bass Control enables subwoofers to be positioned anywhere in the room. This provides greater flexibility to when it comes to a client’s aesthetic preferences and room layout, without compromising on audio performance. How does it work? The software aggregates the measurement and location data from each subwoofer and identifies gaps in the sound waves. It then ensures time-alignment among all speakers and adjusts low frequencies to optimise the bass for every seating position – whilst accurately producing the entire spectrum of audio with the additional room correction full bandwidth software.

WHAT IS DIRAC LIVE BASS CONTROL?

HOW DO EXISTING CUSTOMERS GET DIRAC LIVE BASS CONTROL?

Dirac Live Bass Control is part of the Dirac Live family of audio processing software. Powered by AI, Dirac Live Bass Control intelligently optimises subwoofers and speakers to deliver smooth and evenly distributed bass.

14 FEBRUARY 2024

Selected Denon & Marantz units will be able to run Dirac Live Bass Control following an over-the-air software update, which will allow customers to buy a license. This will then

activate the software on their unit. Dirac ready units include the Denon AVC-A1H, AVCX3800H, Denon AVC-X4800H, Denon AVCX6800H. Marantz’s Dirac Ready units include the Marantz AV 10, Marantz CINEMA 40, and Marantz CINEMA 50.

THE DETAIL OF DENON

Denon stands out due to the precision and detail of its sound systems for its price point. Meticulously tuned by a Denon Sound Master, Denon AVRs are designed to deliver an immersive home cinema experience by leveraging the brand’s heritage for a superb level of performance and quality. REFERENCE CINEMA EVOLVES WITH TRINNOV WAVEFORMING Pulse Cinemas Reference Cinema enters a new era of high-performance with the addition of Trinnov WaveForming technology, supported by a new array of Krix home cinema speakers. Come and experience it for yourself! Pulse Cinemas is inviting installers to a special event to experience the recent upgrades. The Open Days take place over two different dates and interested parties can sign up and secure free tickets for February 8 and on February 20 by contacting Pulse Cinemas direct or check out company social media. Mike Beatty, CEO of Pulse Cinemas, explains, “When we first opened our demonstration space at company HQ here in Stansted, we promised that we would offer installers the chance to experience the very best in home cinema performance delivering the chance to inspire customers with something they have never experienced before. In this latest development we continue to make good on that promise by adding new cuttingedge Trinnov WaveForming technology in our Reference Cinema as well as some other top additions to the equipment line up.” Kapes Patel, COO of Pulse Cinemas, adds, “Trinnov made a big impact at ISE in 2023 with the launch of this new bass audio technology and we are proud to be the first UK demonstration space to include it. Bass is one of the hardest things to get right in any home cinema project and this advancement delivers a level of accuracy, clarity and believability never experienced before.

18 FEBRUARY 2024

“The Pulse Cinemas team have been working hard to install the new technology from Trinnov, a fresh array of Krix highperformance speakers and subwoofers, Surge X protection and power conditioning and a new MadVR Envy Extreme MKII video processor for added visual impact. We have also added more Vicoustic Wavewood Ultra Lite panels for added diffusion in the ceiling, rear and side walls around the seating area providing the right platform for the new set up. The system has also been calibrated by David Meyerowitz Technical Sales Manager – International at Trinnov. We have been very impressed with the results. The key thing about WaveForming is that it gives great products, even more chance to show what they can do. We are delighted to announce it is now ready to experience, so get in touch and make an appointment today!”

WHAT IS WAVEFORMING?

WaveForming is a new advancement which deals with the issue of room modes/standing waves within a cinema by ensuring they never happen in the first place. Audio for home cinema should create a flat and uniform acoustic response over the entire listening area. The main challenge to achieving this rests with controlling the low frequencies (below 100Hz). The acoustic field

within these frequencies is dominated by the modal behaviour of the room. This introduces large differences between the acoustic pressure across the listening area due to minimum and maximum impact created by modal behaviour. The reflections and long decay times of these room modes hide much of the dynamics and detail available in the audio track. By using WaveForming it becomes possible to recreate lower frequencies with incredible accuracy, bass sounds no longer rumble, last too long or sound muddy. A clap of thunder and a lightning strike feel like they are in the room, explosions are tight and impactful but not muddled and confusing, a gunshot delivers punch and accuracy and is not just a loud noise. In short, WaveForming brings realism to lower frequencies and underpins the audio of a movie, concert or sporting occasion like never before.

while the filters applied to all the subwoofers collectively absorb most of the room reflections and resonances. What is great here is that all of the work to get to this level is done within the system itself, and once installers learn the basics of how to set the system up, great results are achieved. There is of course the opportunity for experienced dealers to use their knowledge to add to the power of this system and create truly bespoke systems for each customer. Kapes explains, “Even in a dedicated space like ours there can be compromises. We have found the low ceiling in our Reference Cinema a challenge in getting the audio to deliver for the whole room. With the new products combined with WaveForming, the audio delivers a better

spread right across the room with the back of the cinema enjoying better performance than ever before. Also, don’t forget with a really tight bass performance delivered by WaveForming, the higher frequencies also enjoy more precision and clarity as the ears do not have to spend time trying to sort out unclear bass sounds. “It is rare that a piece of new home cinema technology comes along that impresses to this level. We will of course be providing full training and support for installers, but the first step is to come and experience it for yourself, we know you are going to be impressed and will want to be involved.” Pulse Cinemas pulsecinemas.com

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Trinnov has combined a new algorithm and accompanying design guidelines to deliver WaveForming. The technology uses multiple subwoofers on the front and back walls with location determined by the room dimensions and the desired bandwidth coverage. A larger number of subwoofers will generally give stronger performance, but the technology also offers flexibility in the number and placement of subwoofers. WaveForming is achieved using two main steps within the technology. Firstly, the acoustic field is evaluated within a volume surrounding and throughout the listening space. This step retrieves the necessary information about the modal behaviour of the room so the algorithm can eliminate any unwanted contributions. This is achieved by sampling the acoustic field in a three-dimensional grid of microphone positions within the room. Step two involves the WaveForming processor within the Trinnov Altitude32 calculating the necessary filters to apply to each subwoofer and applying these filters to eliminate the modal signature of the room. The filters applied ensure the generation of the tightest and most uniform wavefront possible,

ESSENTIAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, APPLICATIONS & IMPLICATIONS

AI SECURITY ANSWERS Danya Golan, VP of Marketing at Hailo and Derek Webb, Product Manager at Snap One, answers some key questions. What types of functionality from AI are installers and end users actually looking for? Derek Webb (DW): We’ve found that most installers and end users are looking for an AI-based security system that is simple and easy to use. As for end users, their priority is minimising error rate and false alarms, as well as swift response to potential security threats, recognising that a matter of minutes can be crucial in security situations. When surveillance triggers an event, a push notification is promptly sent to the homeowner’s mobile device, allowing them to take immediate action. AI enhances the accuracy of push notifications, so homeowners can be sure they are reacting appropriately.

What areas does AI excel at in security systems?

DW: AI presents a valuable opportunity for rapid insights. Rather than security cameras capturing a lump sum of unprocessed images and data, security systems with AI integrations can now offer distinct capabilities. AI enables users to receive immediate information when a security event occurs and empowers cameras to zero in on a specific incident. Danya Golan: (DG): By implementing AI, security systems can also create and analyse metadata to detect and identify individuals in footage. This can allow for security systems to recognise known individuals in real time. It can also use this metadata to understand human behaviour and habits, allowing for a security system to establish known individuals and predict behaviours; or to identify strangers as a potential threat. Unlike traditional security systems which rely on motion detectors and other sensors to identify potential security

22 FEBRUARY 2024

events, AI-powered systems can identify people and vehicles with very high accuracy, even in low light conditions, for maximum accuracy and rapid response. The next phase of AI in security systems is the processing of Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative AI on the edge, to enable, for example, free text searching on video footage.

What are some of the key developments that are just around the corner?

DG: From Hailo’s perspective across applications and use cases, a key development that will only continue to improve as AI processors become more and more adept is low-light image enhancement. For security cameras, visibility at night is critical. AI processing on the device can allow for images that are dark to become clear and visible. For home security system users, night is one of, if not the most, critical time for an effective security system, and this breakthrough allows for security systems to remain consistent and effective, even when in a dark area. DW: The Snap One team is always looking at opportunities that can bring more AI objects to customer’s fingertips. These experiences can include animal detection, facial recognition, and more. Simultaneously, we are working to create a user experience that makes this additional data more powerful in a customer’s hand.

Have you encountered any hostility to the concept of AI in security in terms of itself being a security risk? DG: One way we combat any potential hostility is through edge processing. A significant risk that comes with many home security systems today is that the data – in this case, footage

of the home – is kept and processed in the cloud, where it is susceptible to Wi-Fi hacking and risk. When data processing is done at the edge, personal information is processed on the edge device and that data never leaves the device. Only anonymised metadata is streamed to the cloud, enabling a more secure and efficient system. DW: This is a great question. At Snap One, we store event clips in an encrypted bucket. Our AI system only learns from event feedback if and only if the customer submits the security footage clip of the event. This clip then goes into an automated process of training on our AI model. As such, there’s very little to no human interaction with customer video clips.

Where do you think we will be in five years with AI in security systems?

DG: AI can offer endless possibilities for personalisation and customisation of security systems. For example, facial recognition can serve to notify parents when their children return or leave the house. Object recognition can be used to notify homeowners when delivery vehicles or personnel are approaching or when the postman left an envelope. DW: Luma Insights as a platform is just getting started. Our vision is that Computer Vision AI should feel natural in an end user’s home or business. Cameras are important for security. Snap One wants to continue to enhance that security, so that end users can understand what is going on as quickly as possible. Eventually, actionable responses could even be automatic. After AI in security systems, this could eventually lead to home automation –a home could become smart enough to build routines automatically.

ESSENTIAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, APPLICATIONS & IMPLICATIONS

EDGE AI AND SMARTER CAMERAS WILL REDEFINE HOME SECURITY By placing artificial intelligence directly into cameras and security systems, homeowners can more accurately monitor their properties, quickly detect situations and automate the appropriate response, argues Danya Golan, VP of Marketing, AI expert Hailo. Many in the smart home industry operate at the intersection of two key technologies: cloud-based video security and artificial intelligence (AI). Both are used to analyse everything captured on a growing installed base of cameras. As the two grow more pervasive (it’s estimated the market for smart home cameras will grow to nearly 20% annually through 2030), their combined inefficiencies become apparent. Indeed, the cloud has been a revolutionary platform for a litany of applications – email, video communications, streaming media, and even AI chatbots; cloud-based AI has enhanced all of them. When it comes to home security, for which the impact is often felt in real time and far from cloud data centres, as intelligence needs to be generated in the home – at the network edge.

24 FEBRUARY 2024

SMARTER HOME SECURITY AT THE EDGE

Smart home integrators understand the concept of ‘the edge’ better than most. It’s where the majority of their technology has always lived: IP cameras, occupancy sensors, alarms and access controls. Once network-enabled, these smart home devices become many of the ‘things’ on the Internet of Things (IoT), doing their work far from control rooms and data centres. With the advent of AI, many industries have embraced edge computing putting powerful IoT devices in the field, closer to where data is generated and used. For example, industrial manufacturing uses AI alongside robotics, quickly identifying issues on the shop floor. The healthcare industry uses AI by embedding it into their imaging systems, spotting

life-threatening conditions faster and improving patient outcomes. In the case of home security, detecting threats and initiating a response – even before a control centre can act – requires AI to be built into the security systems, specifically a new class of AI processors designed for smart cameras and video management solutions. Home security cameras often do their work in the dark, therefore they need AI processors to drastically enhance the picture before interpreting what they see. The result is faster, better and provides more accurate security.

DEPLOYING EDGE AI IN SMART HOMES

Moving AI to the edge of home security requires a different way of processing information. Today,

/Essentialinstall

@Install_mag

essentialinstall.com

ESSENTIAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, APPLICATIONS & IMPLICATIONS

edge AI processors are designed to handle neural networks, managing data-like synapses in a brain, rather than forcing it through a linear pipeline. In practice, such efficient architecture is especially fitting for security systems. AI processors run AI algorithms rapidly, but use less power, which is important when installing cameras throughout a home and property. The most important thing: Eliminating the need to send video data to cloud servers for processing. There are a couple of ways to deploy edge AI in smart homes. It can be integrated into devices themselves (cameras, sensors) or into a gateway system located in a data closet (a video management system - VMS or network video recorder - NVR). Such gateways, often installed with multiple edge AI processors, take video streams from regular IP cameras and apply AI algorithms for image enhancement, detection, identification, and more.

MATCHING EDGE AI SOLUTION TO HOME SECURITY NEED

Smart home professionals play a significant role in deploying edge AI by understanding the owners’ requirements, and applying the best available solution. Companies like Hailo manufacture AI processors, purpose-designed to accurate and quickly run AI algorithms whilst using less power and eliminating the need for active cooling, making them suitable for smart homes. The AI processors are divided into two classes, designed to answer all the AI needs of a home security system: AI vision processors integrated directly into smart cameras and AI accelerators fitted into gateways and NVRs to support the host processor with AI compute power. Smart cameras with built-in edge AI have recently come to market and although they get users as close as possible to real-time video enhancement, analysis, and decision-making, it may not always be feasible – or necessary

essentialinstall.com

@Install_mag

– to swap all regular cameras for AI cameras. Therefore, aggregation gateways offer a way to bring edge AI to existing security systems, or to homes that don’t necessarily require a lot of real-time processing. Actual use cases of edge AI in smart homes typically fall into two buckets. The first involves making decisions and acting faster. Think of a home in a busy neighbourhood or city. When an edge AI security device detects suspicious activity, for example, it can immediately trigger alerts or initiate security measures. The second bucket comprises solutions to intelligently process data for evaluation later. The fact is, despite advances in AI, not all home security video can be analysed in real time. Much is stored and examined – by the homeowner, integrator, or service provider – if an event is noticed. But with edge AI, such videos can be processed, analysed, and categorised before it’s stored, so when someone must go back and look for a person or event, it’s far more efficient. For instance, they can apply search terms to processed and stored video (show all “unknown persons” or “men wearing hats”) rather than pore through all the footage. Ultimately, use cases are driven by need and budget. Certain critical, real-time security solutions benefit from edge AI being built directly into new cameras and other detection devices. Others, including existing camera deployments, are suited to cost-effective edge boxes for aggregating and analysing streams. Chances are most home security solutions fall in the middle – some combination of AI devices and aggregation boxes. Smart home integrators, in consultation with clients, will help match this new hybrid, edge AI ecosystem to each homeowner’s situation. Consider, for example, whether it’s enough that an edge AI system detects loitering in front of a home at 2 a.m., or whether it needs to make out the faces of the loiterers, will help determine the technology used. Whatever the answer, edge AI delivers actionable intelligence where it’s needed most – in the home it’s meant to protect.

THE SNUG HOME CINEMA AT MARTINS HI-FI Martins Hi-Fi revamps the company’s home cinema showroom with the help from DbM. Martins Hi-Fi, a specialist in high-end home cinema, smart home and high-end HiFi, has recently undertaken a transformation of its Norwich showroom’s home cinema demonstration spaces in collaboration with the award-winning distributor, DbM. The room underwent a comprehensive overhaul, evolving from a previous 1920s-inspired art-deco cinema into a cutting-edge high-end environment that provides customers with an immersive audio-visual experience. This redesign allows them to visualise how the setup could seamlessly integrate into their own homes.

Elizabeth Gould, Director at Martins Hi-Fi, expressed the company’s commitment to incorporating the very best and most flexible technology into this new project, highlighting the choice of Meridian loudspeakers. She says, “We are Meridian’s longest-serving dealer and for good reason. It is a great British brand, designed and built in the UK, featuring digital signal processing (DSP) technology, encompassing entire electronics, including amplification.” With the opportunity to work with a blank canvas to create the Snug Home Cinema project, Martins Hi-Fi engaged the expertise of the DbM Design and Specification Service team

to work alongside their in-house engineers and designers. Elizabeth emphasised the importance of this collaboration, stating, “It offered us a valuable service to help design the room and bounce design ideas between one another, ensuring the end results were a success.” Opting for the Performance option through the DbM Design and Specification Service, Martins Hi-Fi’s new home cinema boasts a discreet yet powerful 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos audio setup, incorporating Meridian’s in-wall and inceiling architectural loudspeakers.

Side and rear channel audio are handled by four Meridian DSP520.2 in-wall loudspeakers strategically placed for optimal coverage across all seating positions. Four Meridian DSP320.2 in-ceiling loudspeakers adhere to Dolby Atmos guidelines. Additionally, two Meridian DSW600 subwoofers, installed into the wall beneath the screen, enhance lowfrequency notes. These loudspeakers deliver exceptional sound quality but also create an auditory illusion, making the room sound larger than its physical dimensions. Furthermore, they contribute to reducing the size of the AV rack requirements. The absence of power amplifiers in the loudspeakers streamlines the setup, eliminating the need for rack ventilation. The audio and video signals are processed by the Trinnov Altitude16 AV-Processor and converted to SpeakerLink by a Meridian 271 Digital Theatre Controller, allowing full Meridian DSP loudspeaker integration with non-Meridian processors. Despite challenges, such as discovering a surprise brick pillar in an external wall uniquely brought up by the 300-year-old building, the team’s ingenuity prevailed. Adjustments were made to the speaker layout, and innovative solutions, including Trinnov-based management features, were employed to seamlessly integrate the subwoofer into the surround and Atmos speakers. In summary, Elizabeth says, “Our response to the project can be summed up in a few words: luxurious, immersive acoustics and cutting-edge technology. It has enabled us to demonstrate a room which shows our customers what they can achieve in their own homes.”

ESSENTIAL EXTERIOR AV AND AUTOMATION SYSTEMS

ELEVATING OUTDOOR LIVING: THE NEXT FRONTIER OF CUSTOMISED AV CONTROL The great outdoors is the new zone of the house, demanding customised AV control says Bill Hensley, Head of Global Marketing, RTI. The integration of technology has extended beyond what was once the traditional boundaries of the home. Now, outdoors as an install category is more like the rest of the house, where technology plays an essential role in its enjoyment and use. Accelerated by the pandemic, the demand for advanced outdoor AV technology continues to thrive nearly four years later, according to CEDIA’s 2023 Market Research Analysis. And as with the rest of the home, the control system plays an essential role in the outdoors spaces. Outdoor living has changed significantly. Gone are the days where this area was equipped with nothing more than a grill and lounge area. Now it’s an extension of the home where work, entertainment, and living happen. This resulting reimagining might mean an elaborate outdoor living room and kitchen, complete with a massive flatscreen, outdoor speakers, lighting, multiple audio, video sources and more. The homeowner’s lifestyle might trend toward saunas, hot tubs or cold plunge tubs that need to be ready to use at the touch of a button. The challenge lies in making these outdoor spaces and features function as smoothly and intuitively as their indoor counterparts. Designing a control system for outdoor spaces requires thoughtful consideration and asking homeowners the right questions. Like the inside of the home, customisable programming should be built around the experiences the homeowners want. The control system will need to integrate the specialised gear that is often installed outdoors – lighting, speakers, outdoor displays, TV lifts or motorised mounts, irrigation, retractable pool covers, and more. For that reason, it becomes critical that the control system is highly flexible and unlimited in regard to what components it can talk to and control. A 100% customisable control system ensures that solutions are tailored to individual needs. Taking an existing template and applying it to the outside may not work if the homeowner can’t use the space the way they imagined. The great outdoors is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, which means that as a common area, it can have multiple potential users – homeowners, children and guests – and multiple functions. What should the user

28 FEBRUARY 2024

experience look like for each of these groups? Children and guests probably don’t need access to the full home system – thermostat, security system, indoor lighting, etc. Limiting what guests or kids can control will maintain a seamless experience, but arriving at what components should involve requires thoughtful communication between integrators and clients. It could be as simple as turning on/off the flatscreen, content selection and volume control. Integrators who work closely with clients to understand their preferences and lifestyle will ensure that the control system supports their one-of-a-kind space. The emphasis here is not merely on extending indoor control mechanisms outdoors but on defining how homeowners really want to interact with technology in these spaces. Beyond providing a way to power on and adjust systems, there is a growing emphasis on automation in outdoor spaces. In the same way a home’s lighting system turns on at dusk, the system should be able to automate in response to changes in the environment or schedule. An obvious example is integrating weather forecasts into the control system to optimise a sprinkler system based on upcoming weather conditions. Receiving notifications about forecasted rain can prompt the control system to skip watering the garden. Or perhaps self-care is a priority for the client, and they wish for the system to automatically turn on the hot tub certain days

of the week. This proactive approach enhances comfort, convenience and the broader trend of running a more efficient home. The outdoor space, once considered separate from these technological advancements, is now a seamless zone within the overall smart home ecosystem. The devices to control outdoor AV systems encompass a spectrum of options, from a smartphone or tablet to a dedicated keypad or remote. Weather-resistance for speakers, displays and other components is an important consideration, as it should be for the controller as well. Water-resistant remotes and keypads ensure durability and functionality in wet environments and seasons. Like inside the home, the outdoor AV landscape is not just about adopting new technologies; it involves a comprehensive understanding of what needs to happen there. An advanced control system, with a focus on integration, versatility, and customisation, aligns perfectly with the evolving needs of this category. As outdoor spaces continue to play a central role in the homeowner’s lifestyle, leveraging the right solution becomes paramount in making it enjoyable and functional. And that goal isn’t very different from the rest of the home – it’s just that it might rain from time to time.

Each component has to be able to take outside life in its stride

THE DAWN OF WIRELESS, WEATHER-RESISTANT AUDIO SYSTEMS Amit Ravat, Managing Director of Lithe Audio identifies the key opportunities in AV systems moving outside. A significant shift is underway in the realm of home entertainment, particularly in how we experience audio in our outdoor spaces. The days of cumbersome installations involving indoor amplifiers and extensive cabling running through walls to outdoor areas, are fading into obsolescence. The catalyst for this change? The advent of weather-resistant speaker systems with integrated amplifiers and advanced wireless technologies such as Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Chromecast. This new breed of outdoor audio systems is not just a step forward; it’s a leap into a future where high-quality, immersive audio and cinema experiences are seamlessly integrated into our outdoor living spaces with unparalleled ease. Traditional outdoor audio systems required significant planning and physical infrastructure. Running cables from indoor amplifiers to outdoor speakers often entailed complex installation processes, which were not only timeconsuming but also disruptive to the aesthetics of outdoor living spaces. The introduction of wireless technologies has dramatically altered

GIVING GARDENS A DIGITAL MAKEOVER Adrian Summers, UK National Account Manager at Future Automation, looks at outdoor opportunities. In 2024, clients are seeking more opportunities to create meaningful outdoor spaces. With the average UK garden size being 188m², clients are looking to make better use of this previously unused space and treat it as an extension of their interior spaces. Given this, clients are now seeking to bring the luxury and convenience of their indoor technologies to their gardens, creating a unique fusion of nature and technology. The projected revenue in the smart home market for the United Kingdom is set to reach approximately £8.69 billion by 2024. This means that there are now approximately 2.2 million smart homes in the UK. As many clients are now familiar with the concept of home automation in the home, there are expectations that gardens will have the same level of control. This expectation is driving the transformation of gardens into luxurious outdoor living spaces, ensuring that no square meter goes to waste. This trend in giving gardens a digital makeover means AV integrators have a unique opportunity to deliver outdoor spaces blending technology with nature.

32 FEBRUARY 2024

Advancements in outdoor TVs have been a crucial component in allowing this trend to be popularised. These weather-resistant displays, once exclusive to luxury hotels or rooftop bars, are now available to premiere clients. They provide an immersive viewing experience, even on the brightest of days, without the usual glare and reflections of conventional displays. Outdoor displays can handle up to 2000 nits of peak brightness, so they can be used on sunny days without worrying about glare and reflections that would affect a regular display. Screen size was once a drawback for outdoor displays, as they had to be viewed from a longer distance than in a living room. But now, many models offer sizes up to 75in, allowing clients to have a more immersive outdoor theatre experience without sacrificing viewing angle or furniture arrangement. However, a large display can sometimes interfere with the natural aesthetics of a garden. While audio equipment can be discreetly concealed inside flower beds a 75in display is a lot more difficult to blend into its surroundings.

There are some unique automated systems that can help turn a display into an artistic feature, or simply hide it from view altogether. These solutions not only improve the aesthetics of the garden, but also help keep the display securely protected when the client isn’t present.

PROJECT – THE SMART HOME GARDEN

Sliding panel mechanisms offer this functionality, incorporating either a single or dual panel system that glides open and closed on command. These systems can be paired with an outdoor display to turn it into a piece of modern artwork when the display isn’t in use. As the panels used in outdoor installations the mechanism may need to be customised to accommodate the additional weight. They will also need to be manufactured using stainless steel to avoid corrosion and will need to be installed inside an appropriate supporting structure. The result is a beautifully crafted unique art installation that blends into the landscape whilst offering an immersive movie-watching experience for the client.

For homeowners seeking less permanent changes to their garden, rollable outdoor theatres provide a versatile alternative to fully fitted display concealment solutions. Systems like Cineair from Future Automation are designed to hide and reveal a display, converting into architectural furniture that blends seamlessly into any outdoor space when the display is lowered. The addition of castor wheels allows the entire cabinet to be easily moved, giving homeowners the flexibility to decide how and where they want to position their display. Some of these systems even include a built-in soundbar concealed behind an architectural grill, removing the need for homeowners to connect external audio to the display.

outdoor conditions. Choosing a mount that is purpose-built for outdoor display mounting like the IP-PS range will also give the client the added benefit of angling the display, avoiding glare and reflections no matter where they are positioned in their garden. Outdoor entertainment spaces are becoming more popular and sophisticated, thanks to smart home technology. Weatherresistant displays enable clients to enjoy high-quality cinematic experiences in their gardens, without compromising the natural

beauty and design of their outdoor spaces. Smart automation allows clients to control and conceal the displays with ease, creating a seamless integration of technology and nature. By offering these solutions, AV integrators can help clients transform their gardens into stunning and functional outdoor living spaces that enhance their lifestyle and well-being. By combining smart home technology and weather-resistant displays, clients can have the best of both worlds: a garden that is both beautiful and entertaining.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Outdoor living and dining rooms are among the top trends seen in modern luxury new home builds and renovation projects. With beautifully designed outdoor spaces with highend amenities becoming a standard, outdoor televisions are becoming a standard for highend outdoor spaces. For locations like these it’s now common to include a wall-mounted display, so the alfresco dining area can be used to enjoy watching sporting events, movies, or TV shows. For locations where displays can remain visible it may be tempting to choose a traditional display mount to hang an outdoor display. However, many of these options are not designed to withstand more demanding

GARDEN FORCE! Designing audio for a garden space allows integrators to be creative and provides an exceptional audio experience for their client. Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales at DbM (top image) and José Coelho, International Business Director at Ambisonic Systems, go green.

The key to providing the right install for your client – whether it’s indoors or outdoors – is understanding your customer. “What we found on recent projects is that you end up using a combination of products depending on the client journey,” comments José. “For example, you would use Landscape Ribbons to focus energy into specific areas where we know the client will be sitting or listening to music. You’d then add the Bollards to fill the area when the client is passing from one area to another area because of that 360° radiation that these speakers provide.” Jose explains, “The way DbM depicts this on the plans is that they utilise the engineering data that is available from Ambisonic so that they can show the journey of the client walking around their outdoor space and how the audio will follow them. Ultimately, the documentation that DbM creates gets used by the integrator to pitch the project to the client, so it needs to be clear and concise.” Barry adds, “When designing the systems, we look at multiple layers. We’ll design one layer to be background music and then drop another layer on top which is what is needed to turn the garden into a more powerful entertaining or party space. This clearly shows them what’s possible and explains the difference in cost and visual impact to enhance the space further.” When designing outdoor audio, the first consideration should be coverage. The

34 FEBRUARY 2024

environment outside is very different from the inside, you don’t have any walls to bounce off, so you have to throw sound a lot further. Directivity is also a key consideration. Clients wouldn’t want the sound to be aimed towards their neighbours or directly blasting their own house. The other issue is having to overwhelm the area with speakers to get the right level of fidelity. With Ambisonic, integrators have the ability to almost ring fence where you want the audio to be. The speakers can be tuned to provide 120° of width dispersion and 90° of height, which means that you won’t be shooting sound into the atmosphere where no one is listening to it or upsetting your neighbours. “One of my favourite demos is standing with a dealer or client five metres away from the speakers and it sounds amazing,” comments Barry. “Then I tell the dealer or client to walk across the other side of the car park and they say that it sounds the same. They can’t believe that the audio loses very little in terms of sound pressure level, fidelity or accuracy, even when you double, triple or quadruple the distance. For me, this is a game-changer. It shows that you don’t have to play music loud to have the ability for the audio to travel.” With Ambisonic, clients also have the option of hiding speakers or having them on display. Most UK dealers are excited about providing outdoor AV to their clients, but there are a lot of integrators who just aren’t tapping into this

market, and they are literally leaving money on the table. “For these integrators who aren’t used to selling and installing systems in the garden, DbM is the right partner for you as they provide a level of handholding that is invaluable,” argues José. “Whether it’s access to their showroom, the ability to bring products to the site for demos, a sales team who fully understand the needs of the client and are confident in supporting the integrator in these conversations and the design service they offer – they’ve got you covered. DbM removes the barrier to those integrators who are not familiar with landscape sound installations.” Another area that DbM has seen growth in is client upgrades – going back to projects from four or five years ago with integrators and putting in a new audio system or perhaps projector. “When visiting these projects, we open up conversations about the outdoor space,” says Barry. “We can either invite clients and integrators to our showroom to showcase the products or we can bring the speakers to the client and provide a real-life demo to showcase what is possible in their garden. We are that confident in the Ambisonic product range that we know if we do the demo at a client’s house, they will say yes.”

CHAMPIONING AUDIO EXCELLENCE: CEDIA HOSTS RP22 WORKSHOPS Since launching the CEDIA/CTA RP22 Immersive Audio System Design Recommended Practice in September 2023, CEDIA has been hosting a number of training courses to provide integrators with an in-depth understanding of what this new document means to them. Since launching the CEDIA/CTA RP22 Immersive Audio System Design Recommended Practice in September 2023, CEDIA has been hosting a number of training courses to provide integrators with an in-depth understanding of what this new document means to them. What is RP22? The RP22 Immersive Audio System Design Recommended Practice emerged as a result of close collaboration between approximately 40 global experts over 3,000 volunteer hours. This collective effort was subjected to rigorous peer review and developed under ANSI guidelines. The main objective of RP22 revolves around achieving measurable outcomes through design. When RP22 is implemented, it ensures that the user understands their investment, the integrator delivers as expected, and the manufacturer’s product excels in its intended design. Crucially, RP22 remains product and format agnostic, concentrating solely on defining objective performance targets for audio systems and room design across private entertainment spaces.

INTRODUCING THE RP22 WORKSHOP

With over 3,000 downloads of the document within the first few weeks of release, the industry was excited by RP22 and there was a desire from integrators to learn more about it. CEDIA worked with Peter Aylett, a renowned industry veteran and Partner at Officina Acustica, and CTA/CEDIA R10 Standards Committee Chair, to develop a two-

36 FEBRUARY 2024

day workshop that provides hands-on training in applying these standards to real-world projects. With the first UK session selling out immediately and proving extremely successful, CEDIA hosted a workshop in India in November and one in London in January. “I had a really good two days with the CEDIA team learning about RP22,” says Richard Coleman, Luxe Home Cinemas. “The document came out around about six weeks ago. I did have a read of it, but there were quite a few calculations that I wasn’t quite sure about and it’s great to be here with Peter who is chairing the whole procedure to walk us through all the different calculations. It’s really going to impact our designs going forward, so I would thoroughly recommend the course to any other CEDIA members.” The RP22 session is centred around the introduction of groundbreaking guidelines outlined in the CEDIA/CTA RP22 Immersive Audio System Design Recommended Practice. During the session, Peter delves into the four newly defined levels of performance that distinctly delineate various immersive experiences. Adopting a ‘teach, then do’ approach, the workshop provides a truly immersive experience. Participants, all adept cinema designers with a strong foundation in performance engineering, engage in small group activities. These exercises aim to apply the RP22 guidelines to real-world scenarios. “The RP22 course has been an absolutely amazing. In terms of what we thought we knew about cinema design and putting all these recommended practices in place, I feel like it’s going to take the design to a new level and will

mean that everybody is working towards the same results,” says Ben Pratt, B Electrical. “For me as someone new coming into the industry, it is key to make sure that I am working with and amongst the best of the best so that I can produce projects that are of the same level. If you haven’t thought about it and you design cinemas, you definitely need to get involved.” The RP22 Immersive Audio Design Course is a testament to industry collaboration and commitment to defining and implementing objective engineering practices in private entertainment space design. The shared knowledge and experiences promise to elevate the future of immersive audio experiences in the region. “It’s been an eye-opening course and I’ve learnt a hell of a lot from it”, adds James Brown, The Cinema Company. “It is by no means a course for people who don’t know anything about cinema. It’s taking cinema to the next level and if you really want to know in-depth about immersive audio, then this course is an absolute must.” Continuing the momentum generated by the RP22 Immersive Audio Design Course, CEDIA plans to host more workshops in 2024. Stay up to date at cedia.org/events. Tell us about your time at Wizard Systems. Wizard Systems was born from a couple of events. The retail environment had changed, and CI was a way to shift momentum from Hi-fi toward a more “concierge” approach. I wanted to deliver the best sonic and visual experiences, but in an easy-to-use format. As much as I love music and Hi-fi and home theatre, I was faced with learning networking, mesh Wi-Fi, surveillance, control systems, etc. This is the plight, I believe, and the backbone of the modern integrator, being a full solution provider for their clients.

Snow, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, Patsy Cline, lots of early country. I bought a book at Radio Shack about speaker design and learned how stereo imaging worked. I was astonished by what I was hearing from just two speakers. Painting an image in the mind as wide and high as a movie screen. Any recording was then worthy of exploration.

What were some of the earliest positions you held that helped you grow professionally? In the 90s, I was a salesperson for Hi-Fi and surround systems at a local retailer, 6th Ave Electronics. I quickly learned that, if I wanted to make any money at all to pay the rent, I needed to convey my excitement for AV to my clients. Long hours, but I felt a great sense

Can you explain your journey through your association with the Onkyo, Integra, Pioneer, Elite brands, through to your role as Senior Director of Category Ownership & Integrated Electronics, Premium Audio Company? Sure, I was one day contacted by Onkyo USA to discuss the Integra brand. It was meant to be a discussion from ‘the street’. Meaning, what does an integrator like and dislike about this product. Well, being an Integra/Onkyo dealer, I filled their ears and they hired me to work on the Integra training program. That snowballed into product development for all brands. ESSENTIAL MARINE AV AND AUTOMATION SYSTEMS

NAVIGATING AV CONTROL ON THE OPEN SEAS Luxury yachts demand customised, cutting-edge automation experiences says Bill Hensley, Head of Global Marketing, RTI. Navigating the open seas, luxury yacht owners expect nothing less than an exceptional onboard experience. Control, automation and AV is a central player in elevating this experience. The world of luxury yacht ownership is getting bigger, with reports of record sales in 2022 and forecasts predicting that the industry will double in revenue in the next 10 years to $19.9 billion, according to Future Market Insights. AV integrators who find themselves working in this industry will need to navigate the challenges the marine environments present and lean on the innovations that cater to the unique needs of these high-end vessels. In marine control and AV, providing an outstanding automation experience involves prioritising several key factors that are part of any installation – customisation, reliability, ease of installation and programming and system openness. Marine AV shares striking similarities with those found in luxury homes – albeit with some unique challenges. Perhaps even more than the luxury home, AV control on a yacht must revolve around 100% customisation. Yachts often have multiple users, including the owner, guests, and the crew. A one-size-fits-all approach with predetermined templates will likely fall short of meeting the needs of one or more of these user groups. For example, the owner may want individual zone control for the cabins and state rooms for the guests, but also have the ability to group these zones if they’re entertaining. It’s also important to think about the guest experience. Guests – and even some owners – who don’t live onboard or use the system daily will be unfamiliar with the control system. For this reason, intuitiveness is essential. When they walk into the room, they need to be able to manage lighting, shades, TV sources and volume with a simple command, whether from a remote, touch panel on the wall, or mobile device app. In this context, an integrator might approach the control design much like they would a guest house. When it comes to outfitting a yacht with AV, one area of focus will be selecting components that can handle the elements if they’re exposed. While IP ratings are crucial for anything on deck, the control system itself is typically tucked away inside the yacht. There is an outdoor aspect that can be easily overlooked, and that’s the

remote control. If a remote will be part of the system, opt for one that is weather-resistant, like the RTI U3 remote. Beyond its IP66 rating, the electronic paper screen is easy to read in bright light. Reliability is a non-negotiable aspect of all AV control projects and especially in marine. To say responding to a service call on the open sea is significantly more challenging would be an understatement. Thus, it’s important that the selected control system has a legacy of reliability and testimony of its use in marine environments, ensuring uninterrupted entertainment and control. It’s also essential that the control program is easy to program and install. In the marine industry, this plays a particularly pivotal role. In luxury residential, getting into an installation early on can be one of the biggest benefits and challenges to creating a tailored AV system. In the luxury yacht market, integrators should expect they’ll have an even tighter timeline. That’s because yacht construction can take up to three to four years and is typically done in specialised shipyards, perhaps even be on a different continent than where it will eventually dock. The integrator and AV installers need to make the most of their installation window. Preprogramming the system, before having access to the vessel, will allow installers to work much more quickly during the final outfitting and finishing stages. This will expedite the installation process, providing the AV team with

the flexibility they need to meet tight schedules and ensure the top-tier performance that’s expected within a luxury yacht. One final consideration is the integration of control system with other vessel systems. A seamless experience for the owner and crew is achieved when the control system can also provide a dashboard that displays critical vessel data in the vessel monitoring and control system. The RTI control platform is built around an open API, allowing integrators to leverage–or create– drivers that facilitate communication between the RTI processor and the different systems onboard. And of course, the system needs to be able to keep any sensitive information in the vessel monitoring and control system away from the guests. As luxury yachts continue to redefine opulence on the high seas, the role of AV integrators in creating unparalleled entertainment and control solutions is becoming increasingly vital. The good news for integrators is that those who are already familiar with working in the luxury residential will feel less ‘at sea’ in this industry, as both demand prioritising reliability, customisation, and ease of installation. Mirroring the high level of customisation that defines the luxury residential experience applies to the luxury yacht world. However the marine environment presents its own unique challenges for integrators to not only meet but exceed.

ESSENTIAL MARINE AV AND AUTOMATION SYSTEMS

CAPTAIN CONNECTED As CEO of Intrinsic Group, overseeing subsidiaries Intrinsic Dev, Smart Yachts International, LINK Connected Smart Marine and Your Smart Home, Will takes a view of a more connected marine world. In the marine world, the current state of ship systems often reflects a historical legacy of isolation, where each system functions independently, disconnected from others. This approach has left ship systems historically disjointed, creating a patchwork of separate services that lack cohesion and synergy. Such fragmentation not only hampers the operational efficiency of these vessels but also detracts from the seamless experience that those aboard luxury yachts and cruise ships rightfully expect. The significance of seamless system integration in these marine environments cannot be understated. Crews are used to navigating their way around disparate systems. However, for owners who seek the pinnacle of luxury and comfort at sea, the fluid interplay of various systems – from navigation and safety to entertainment and climate control – is a fundamental expectation. Achieving this level of integration is more than a convenience; it’s the new requisite for delivering the impeccable, high-standard experience that defines modern luxury maritime travel. Integrating AV and control is awash with challenges, number one being space. The confined quarters of a vessel demands innovative solutions that maximise functionality without compromising the vessel’s aesthetic or comfort. Space for AV equipment is at a premium, often peppered throughout the ship’s harder-to-access spaces which necessitates designs that are both compact and powerful. Another hurdle is the knowledge gap in regarding AV technology, prevalent among many boat builders and shipyards. This lack of deep understanding often leads to inadequate provision for AV equipment thereby hampering the ability to fulfil AV specifications for projects. Reliability should be the cornerstone of these systems. Systems must operate flawlessly, especially on the day when the ‘boss’ is onboard! This reliability is not just a feature; it’s a necessity to ensure that every voyage remains glitch-free thereby maintaining the hallmark of luxury that guests expect. The luxury yacht world has a wide spectrum, from the modest models like Princess and Sunseeker to vast vessels that are in essence extravagant personal cruise ships. This diversity

essentialinstall.com

@Install_mag

is mirrored in their AV and automation needs. On smaller vessels, the focus is on AV systems that are compact, simple and intuitive. Conversely, the larger yachts, frequented by ultra-high-net-worth individuals, necessitate vast, complex and highly secure networks. Remote control and monitoring is new in the marine industry, revolutionising how crew and guests interact with the vessel’s technology. These features facilitate an unprecedented level of control and accessibility, offering the convenience of managing systems from any location in the world both on or off the yacht. Simultaneously, the integration of CCTV in marine security is escalating, underscoring a heightened focus on safety in the marine environment. This trend reflects a growing demand for sophisticated surveillance systems offering peace of mind. The sector is witnessing a significant shift with the introduction of Smart Marine Technology. This evolution represents a leap towards integrating advanced AV and IT systems, akin to those used in luxury homes. The integration of data collection and monitoring with onboard systems has changed the game. By collating data from diverse sources, such as navigation, engine metrics and entertainment systems, it offers a holistic view of the vessel’s functionality, ensuring smooth operations and enables enriched guest experience by offering such things as moving maps and live vessel information. The introduction of Starlink marks a significant milestone in this area. Starlink’s role in boosting data availability and connectivity at sea is transformative, providing high-speed cost-effective internet even in the most remote maritime regions. This advancement in connectivity not only enhances communication but also facilitates real-time data processing and decision-making. The market has many options for separate monitoring and integration; however, a vanguard of the new era of connected smart

marine solutions is LINK. This innovative system goes beyond traditional vessel management, significantly enhancing the integration of AV systems with the ship’s core functionalities. Furthermore, LINK’s ability to provide comprehensive access to the ship’s data through AV control platforms marks a leap forward, offering a more intelligent, connected and responsive approach to luxury maritime travel. The integration of marine information into control platforms, such as Crestron touch panels, is transforming the user experience in marine environments. These sophisticated systems bring data like speed, heading and navigational information to the fingertips of crew, owners and guests, presented through user-friendly interfaces. It provides a more intuitive and interactive way to engage with the vessel’s systems, elevating the overall functionality. The integration of advanced systems which harmonises AV with vessel data, marks a significant milestone in this journey. As we look forward, I see a new era where luxury yachts become smart connected yachts.

ESSENTIAL MARINE AV AND AUTOMATION SYSTEMS

MARVELOUS MARINE MANIPULATIONS Adrian Summers, UK National Account Manager, reveals the secrets to concealing AV equipment on Super, Giga and Terayachts. Superyachts are the epitome of luxury and sophistication, but behind the scenes, they are a marvel of engineering. These floating palaces are meticulously crafted to meet the demands of discerning clients, often serving as a ‘home away from home’. However, replicating the AV experience of a home on a superyacht, in our hyper-connected world, is a complex task. This task is undertaken by interior designers and architects who aim to create a space with aesthetic appeal, that is also functional and accessible. This is because despite the impressive scale of these superyachts, which

can range from 37 metres (120ft) to over 90 metres (300ft), space is always at a premium. Sweeping panoramic windows, lower ceilings, and natural curves created by the design and construction of the boat create unique challenges that have to be navigated. This is where AV integrators come into play, as they can offer innovative solutions that optimise the available space without compromising on aesthetics or functionality. AV automation can transform a room, giving it multiple functions and saving valuable space for the client. A common form of AV

automation is display concealment. Automated display mounting systems allow clients to watch TV as they would at home, but also provide the option to completely conceal the display when not in use. The most popular methods of display concealment on superyachts involve concealing the display within cabinetry or the ceiling. These options are favoured over fixed position displays because they allow a space to be open plan as it removes the need for a wall to mount the display to. They also give greater flexibility with placement to optimise viewing angles for the client. A display installed inside a low-level cabinet can be placed into a room in a way that avoids glare and reflections. A larger TV can also be used as it won’t be on permanent display. This enhances the client’s entertainment experience without compromising on aesthetics or practicality. However, not all motorised display lifts are suitable for marine projects. Gravity-assisted display lifts can be susceptible to the constant motion of a boat and the display is not locked in position as it is concealed or revealed. Therefore, it’s important to choose a display lift with a direct drive system and motorised lid. This is typically a lead screw or chain system. Each of these options allows the display to be secure regardless of its position, ensuring it will be unaffected by the motion of the boat.

However, with average costs of bespoke superyachts costing an average of £1.5 million per square metre some interior designers may want to further maximise usable floor space in their projects. This is where hinged ceiling mounted displays come into play. These mechanisms offer interior designers and architects the opportunity to conceal their display inside a ceiling. Boats offer the perfect opportunity to discreetly conceal these mechanisms inside a ceiling as boat ceilings are often panelled. This means the mechanism can seamlessly blend into the surrounding ceiling and can be painted or finished in a matching finish. These ceiling hinge TV systems are specifically designed with marine considerations in mind. They include marine locks that hold the mechanism in place when the display is open and closed, preventing the display from swaying. Moreover, ceiling hinge TV systems can include the ability to rotate, serving multiple areas of an open-plan room. For instance, the display could face a living room and then rotate to face a dining area. Weather-resistant versions

are also available, built with stainless steel to avoid corrosion and perimetre seals offering dust and water ingress protection.

ALL ABOARD!

Often for clients purchasing a super, giga, or terayacht they will be seeking an additional wow factor. Bespoke display concealment solutions offer a unique opportunity to make a statement. Imagine a bespoke display hinge installed on the deck of the superyacht, fully weather-sealed and capable of opening in under 60 seconds to reveal a screen of up to 228in using weatherresistant video walls. The entire mechanism can either sit on top of or can even be recessed into the floor, so it doesn’t obscure views out to sea. The entire frame is also load-bearing so clients can walk across the top of the mechanism without fear of wasting valuable floor space on your sun or aft deck. The ability to turn the deck of your boat into a private movie theatre under the stars is an alluring prospect for anyone looking to make a statement.

In the realm of luxury yachts, the integration of cutting-edge AV and automation systems is redefining the marine experience. These systems, tailored specifically for marine environments, are overcoming challenges to deliver seamless entertainment and control solutions. Display concealment solutions, whether within cabinetry, the ceiling, or even the deck, are among the latest trends transforming marine AV. These innovative solutions not only enhance the entertainment experience but also maximise usable floor space, a crucial aspect in yacht design. The ability to transform any area into a private cinema adds an extra layer of luxury, resonating with the exclusivity associated with yacht ownership. As we navigate the future, these trends and technologies will continue to evolve, pushing the boundaries of design and functionality in marine AV and automation systems. This evolution offers clients a unique blend of luxury and practicality, making each journey a statement of their style and sophistication.

ANY CONTENT, ANYWHERE – EVEN AT SEA Why AV-over-IP is perfect for marine integration argues Daniel Kerkhof, Director of Crestron Marine. The way clients are consuming media is changing. The ability for a user to call up any content from any location is a must. The platforms themselves have shifted: YouTube, for example, was considered just a video platform – but more and more clients are turning to YouTube as a music provider. Spotify now offers audiobooks and podcasts in addition to music. The list goes on.

It’s a shift Crestron have noticed in residential integrations, and that invariably means the same for marine clients. Since Crestron is known for creating products in luxury residential installations and superyacht environments, it is constantly striving to create incredibly durable, high-quality products that can serve up ‘entertainment everywhere’ for the end user.

Marine projects come with their unique challenges, not the least of which is the potential for an ever-changing list of end users, from owners to guests (including charters) to crew. Marine integrations demand intuitive control for their state-of-the-art systems. Add tight spaces to the mix, and AV-over-IP solutions become the obvious choice.

THE MANGUSTA OCEANO 50.2 A tremendous example of this is the Mangusta Oceano 50.2, a yacht comfortably hosting 12 guests in six cabins, including a master stateroom on the main deck. AV was critical to this integration, which explains its presence on every control room. AV, with automation controls – lights, shades, A/C – is available as pop-up subpages. As noted in the case study, based on the primary user, each area has a dedicated tablet customised with different capabilities. The crew dinette features a 10in Crestron touch screen receiving calls from the tablets doubling as a monitoring station for lights and A/C. It allows the cabin attendant to set the right mood and prepare each room for guests’ arrival.

The client also wanted to pick up any of the phones on the yacht and speak to any combination of staterooms from the AV system’s speakers. This is where audio-overIP distribution proved especially helpful: Deploying Crestron DM NAX technology meant adding the analogue output of an extension to one unit was all that was needed to meet the demand. This kind of customisation per individual user and multi-purpose functions of different technologies is at the heart of providing clients and guests with the broadest possible array of entertainment options, whilst simultaneously creating easy-to-use controls for other systems via a single screen.

THE ARTEXPLORER

The flexibility of AV-over-IP solutions in marine integrations is illustrated in the ARTEXPLORER – a luxury catamaran that doubles as a touring museum. As we shared on the Crestron blog : When the yacht is configured for museum duties, the primary presentation in the ‘tunnel’ is an advanced digital show with multi-channel audio and a massive LED image. PARTY TIME! Nick Fichte, Business Development Director, L-Acoustics, Home & Yacht, takes to the seas. When it comes to outfitting yachts and superyachts with audio systems, the standard solution calls for a relatively inexpensive array of 6in marine-grade installed loudspeakers fitted for background music and entertainment. While some yachts may have opted for some component and performance upgrades along the way, these basic audio systems are neither powerful nor dynamic enough to fulfil the needs for parties. This means that when a party is called for, clients must turn to an outside supplier to deploy a DJ-style set-up of pro-audio speakers for extra power and volume. In addition to the logistics of sourcing and set-up, installing pro-audio speakers for onboard events involves temporary rigging and cabling. Yachts and superyachts are synonymous with opulence and refined design. Temporary installations of freestanding DJ speakers with the necessary poles and cables, alongside the need for installers/riggers running around the decking pre-event, can disrupt the clean lines and sophisticated ambience that a luxury yacht owner has so carefully curated. An ideal solution would be dedicated installation loudspeakers with marine-grade protection that deliver professional audio performance and sound pressure levels. Models with that level of engineering are far from common in the installation industry, but L-Acoustics offers a range of professional-grade integration speakers using technologies from its famous professional audio and touring portfolio that deliver on that brief. The benefits of ‘pro’ specification audio in the marine sector extend beyond convenience and high SPL. Having control over the sound through professional installation into the yacht environment, along with dedicated EQ systems,

52 FEBRUARY 2024

delivers unrivalled improvement in ambient or daily sound performance. Yet when the party starts, they can perform gig-scale performances for onboard musicians and DJs. Control over sound dispersion and coverage can be far superior with professional audioderived integration loudspeakers, where technologies such as a colinear line source, compact line arrays and coaxial drivers can offer easy tuning of sound directivity. This ensures peak power and performance in the key listening areas with far less sound power projected in the wrong direction or lost overboard. For parties on yachts at moorings, this helps reduce ambient noise that could disturb other vessels or residents around the harbour. With fully integrated professional audio loudspeakers, this level of performance and always-ready convenience can seamlessly integrate into the vessel’s structure, blending

harmoniously with the overall aesthetic. The client can cruise along to a mellow playlist on Spotify and offer a simple plug-in for guest DJs and musicians for entertaining and parties – all from one convenient, near-invisible installed system. These high-quality installation speakers with professional audio performance are by far the superior choice for luxury yachts and superyachts. Moreover, to well-heeled yacht owners, it is an easy sell since these systems offer unmatched aesthetics, sound performance and slick convenience for guest musicians, and seamless adaptability to varying audio demands from background music to DJ and concert-level scale. For integrators working in the marine industry, specifying premium professional audio can really impress clients and add significant value to AV installation projects, either at yacht build or as an attractive retrofit project.

The clean lines of a yacht don’t have to be spoiled with unattractive or temporary pro speakers

SMART THINKING

VISUALISE THE FUTURE Richard Benson, Co-Founder, Pikcells, specialist in CGI & 3D Software applications, casts his eye over the shape of future expansion of the smart home. In my opinion, the install market is primed for future growth given the growing sophistication of the end user as smart home technology becomes an integral part of the home and today’s busy lifestyles. I think we can all agree that changes in technology have impacted every part of our industry, from the supply chain right through to the final sign-off on projects. I believe there is no alternative but to lean into these technological advancements, as having the right tech partner on board will enable you to keep pace with market change and the

growing digital expectations from today’s customers. In my opinion, forward-thinking retailers and installers will be looking to enhance the buyer’s journey as well as uplevelling their project management capabilities with the latest visualising technology. Since Covid changed the world, connectivity and convenience is everything for a timepressed, always-on generation which plays to the strengths of our sector. It seems to me that the shift towards hybrid working and the rise of the multi-generational household means

that AV systems will come to the fore for both work and play, inside and outside the house. In fact, there seems to be a huge potential for the worlds of wellness, tech and entertainment to crossover into the home entertainment market as premium consumers aspire to media walls – which will add value to a home gym, games room, home office or family room. Given the growing popularity of the sports bar concept in the UK, I can envisage how the install market might evolve so that homeowners can replicate and personalise the experience in a bespoke games room which effectively blends the wow factor of a home cinema with the sociability of a home bar when entertaining.

What are some of the technologies that will shape the market? We have seen the rise of digitalisation in our industry, with virtual appointments now standard when speaking with our own teams as well as management meetings with sales reps and manufacturers, and so your choice of design tool shouldn’t take a back seat either. We all know how important staging and styling your retail/demo space is to create an elevated user experience and so having the support of a virtual design space is a great way to convert an enquiry into a sale. We have found that by

SMART THINKING offering end users a similar-looking space to their own with the options provided in an easyto-use layout, they can quickly play with ideas and capture this design for use later. In fact, a forward-thinking operator might want to see an online visualiser as a lead generator or sales tool which never sleeps! A customer who is enjoying seeing their new living space coming to life on screen in 3D is well on the way to making it a reality with the help of a designer who can suggest further upgrades and special touches to personalise the design, whether that might be altering the position of speakers or explaining where the cabling will go. When an initial enquiry becomes an interactive, enjoyable and personal experience, I truly believe more customers will not only appreciate our industry’s expertise but also be more likely to give you great testimonials and word-of-mouth recommendations to grow your business. In my experience, investing in the right technology will not only benefit the customer but also your team. It shows your people that you believe in the business and are betting on yourself and them for the long-haul. Let’s be honest, our people wear a lot of hats in terms of being ambassadors for your business and

hugely diplomatic when problem solving with people and logistics. If we want to retain and develop the best talent, we need to ensure they have the best tools for the job for both residential and contract projects. Research from Statista indicates that consumers’ expectations are growing rapidly as they discover the convenience of product customisation and quick check out processes via e-commerce. These functions all speed up the customer’s journey and can therefore lead to warmer leads from end users who are more ready to buy. We know that buying a home cinema, games room or new garage is not a spur of the moment decision for the average consumer. I think we have a duty of care to make it as easy and as exciting as possible to guide them through the design process and close the sale with confidence and mutual respect. People buy with the eye, so it is a huge challenge to sell a high-quality product with the low-quality visuals that are inherent in online design tools. In an age of HD TV and immersive experiences, a basic blueprint or 2D plan is not going to reflect either the quality of premium products or the talent of your design team. Today’s visualisers capture and retain data and sync seamlessly across multiple platforms.

/Essentialinstall

In an age of contactless payment and biometric solutions, clunky and dated technology reflects badly on retailers and service providers. Frankly, I believe that our genius as an industry relies on bridging the gaps between design possibilities and the practicalities and using visualisers to explore this interface has the potential to transform our industry, attracting newcomers and career changers alike. Having technology which is ‘just enough’ will eventually let you down and usually at the most inconvenient time. This is why I urge retailers to look at the latest options for design tech with an entrepreneurial eye – and do the maths to see how quickly they can recoup the upfront investment, which typically starts from around £10,000. The ROI on a good quality visualiser is well worth the investment. Aberdeen Group Study reports there is a 20% average increase in revenue for companies that have configurable products online, and harnessing a good quality visualiser will speed up decision making which in turn, will accelerate the sales process and positively impact the number of projects you’re commissioned for.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BUILDING STRONG PROCESSES FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH David Fell a former system integrator with in-depth knowledge of technology, business development and business strategy on a global scale, has a growth plan. In today’s ever-changing business landscape, companies must adapt and grow if they want to remain competitive. However, achieving sustainable growth is easier said than done. Many struggle to maintain their momentum and often find themselves plateauing or even declining. The key to breaking through these barriers and achieving sustainable growth is building strong processes from the ground up. In the context of business, processes are the workflows and procedures that guide how a company operates. From sales and marketing to production and customer service, every area of a business relies on processes to function effectively.

THE BENEFITS OF STRONG PROCESSES

One of the primary benefits of strong processes is improved efficiency. By streamlining workflows and eliminating unnecessary steps, companies can reduce the time and resources required to complete tasks. This, in turn, leads to reduced costs and increased productivity. When employees can work more efficiently, they can accomplish more in less time, which means the company takes on more work without hiring additional staff. Another benefit of strong processes is improved quality control. By establishing clear procedures and standards, companies

58 FEBRUARY 2024

can ensure their products and services meet or exceed customer expectations. This is particularly important in industries where quality is a key differentiator, such as manufacturing or professional services. Finally, strong processes can also improve employee morale and job satisfaction. When employees know what is expected of them and have the tools and resources they need to do their jobs effectively, they are more likely to feel engaged and motivated. This, in turn, can lead to lower turnover rates and a stable workforce.

IDENTIFYING YOUR BUSINESS PROCESSES: MAPPING OUT YOUR WORKFLOW

Before you can improve your processes, you need to know what they are. This requires mapping out your workflows and identifying the steps involved in each process. The goal is to create a visual representation of how work gets done in your company, from the initial request or order to the final delivery or outcome. To map out your workflows, you can use a variety of tools and techniques. One popular method is process mapping, which involves creating a diagram showing the flow of work through a particular process. This can help you identify any bottlenecks or inefficiencies in your processes and determine where improvements can be made.

Another useful technique is value stream mapping focusing on the entire value chain of a product or service. This can help you identify areas where waste can be eliminated, and value can be added to the customer experience.

ANALYSING AND IMPROVING YOUR PROCESSES: CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT

The next step is to analyse and improve your processes. This requires a commitment to continuous process improvement, which involves regularly reviewing and refining your processes, ensuring they remain efficient and effective. One of the most effective tools for continuous process improvement is the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. This is a four-step process that involves planning a change; implementing the change; checking the results and acting on what you learn. By following this cycle, you can test and refine your processes over time, making incremental improvements that add up to significant gains in efficiency and productivity. Another important aspect of continuous process improvement is involving employees in the process. Employees are often the most familiar with the day-to-day workings of a process, and their insights and suggestions can be invaluable in identifying areas for improvement.

IMPLEMENTING AND MANAGING CHANGE: COMMUNICATING YOUR PROCESS CHANGES

process improvement team or committee. This group can be responsible for identifying opportunities for improvement; testing and refining new processes; and communicating

Improving your processes is only half the battle. The other half is implementing and managing change effectively. This requires clear communication and buy-in from all stakeholders, including employees, customers, and suppliers. When communicating process changes, it’s important to focus on the benefits and outcomes of the change, rather than the change itself. This can help build buy-in and support for the change amongst employees and other stakeholders. Another important aspect of implementing and managing change is training and education. Employees need to be trained on any new processes or procedures, and they need to understand the rationale behind the change. This can help ensure that the change is adopted and implemented effectively.

CREATING A CULTURE OF PROCESS IMPROVEMENT: ENCOURAGING EMPLOYEE PARTICIPATION

To achieve sustainable growth, companies must create a culture of process improvement. This means encouraging and empowering employees to identify areas for improvement and participate in the process of continuous improvement. One way to do this is by establishing a

changes to the rest of the organisation. Another important aspect of creating a culture of process improvement is recognising and rewarding employees for their contributions. This can help build momentum and enthusiasm for the process, helping ensure employees feel valued and appreciated for their efforts.

TOOLS AND RESOURCES FOR BUILDING STRONG PROCESSES: PROCESS MAPPING SOFTWARE AND BEST PRACTICES When it comes to building strong processes, there are a variety of tools and resources available to help. Process mapping software, for example, can help you create detailed process maps and identify areas for improvement. Other tools, such as Lean Six Sigma methodologies and process improvement frameworks, can provide a structured approach to continuous improvement. In addition to these tools, there are several best practices that help build strong processes. These

include

standardising

procedures,

automating repetitive tasks and using data and analytics to inform decision-making.

/Essentialinstall

CASE STUDIES: REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES

To see the benefits of strong processes in action, it’s helpful to look at real-life examples. Two companies that have successfully built strong processes are Toyota and Amazon. Toyota is known for its lean production system, which is based on the principles of continuous improvement and waste reduction. By focusing on improving processes and eliminating waste, Toyota has been able to achieve remarkable levels of efficiency and quality control. Amazon, meanwhile, has built its business on a foundation of strong processes and automation. From its highly efficient fulfilment centres to its data-driven approach to customer service, Amazon has been able to rapidly scale its operations whilst maintaining a high level of quality and customer satisfaction.

CONCLUSION: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Building strong processes is essential for achieving sustainable growth in today’s fast-paced business world. By identifying and improving your workflows, implementing and managing change effectively and creating a culture of process improvement, you can streamline your operations, reduce costs, and improve productivity. With the right tools and resources, and a commitment to continuous improvement, you can build a strong foundation for sustainable growth and thrive in today’s competitive market.

We act as the specialist design and fit-out arm to our AV integrator partners, helping them deliver higher quality and more profitable projects.

What are you doing today work-wise? In the design studio we have been working on several very cool and varied residential projects. Two for the UK, and one for Europe. The briefs are varied – from classic to super contemporary. We pride ourselves on always approaching each project in isolation, doing our best to understand the brief and delivering unique work on a project-by-project basis.

60 FEBRUARY 2024

Tell us about the projects you are working on right now.

How do you feel the industry in general is going right now?

In terms of live sites, we have today commenced a residential recording studio for a long-standing client. With our core team initially coming from a professional music background, these projects are always close to our heart. We receive a lot of credit for our aesthetic design and construction, but our competency in technical design often goes under the radar. These projects are a great endorsement of that, as a studio is judged on its technical performance, so it is always rewarding to be awarded these projects on that basis.

It feels like it is heading in the right direction. With Cinema Luxe being relative newcomers to this industry (five years) it has progressed a huge amount in that time. Coming from interior design, an industry which has established practices going back centuries, it was quite a comparison with the AV industry, which still felt like it was really trying to find its place and constantly adapting. We have seen a trend with our most successful dealers, where it is service that is being sold rather than focusing on components. Those dealers seem to be doing well and attracting the right projects.

Tell us about the work you have been doing on showrooms. We have completed several new showrooms recently. Dedicated showrooms for some of our integrator partners and most notably the new Artcoustic showroom, also in Essex. It is a great space for integrators to bring their clients. The showroom focuses on cinema and from our perspective it was a difficult brief to get right. Artcoustic, with its Danish heritage, naturally leans towards Scandinavian design and the showroom needed to reflect that history of the brand. However, there is a fine line between clean, simple lines and the rooms being overly simplistic for the UK market. I think that we have struck the right balance and look forward to client feedback.

What areas of the smart home and luxury AV sector need to improve and how? I feel that the industry is constantly improving; most people seem hungry to develop and be better at delivering projects. I do however feel that sometimes integrators try and take on too much, rather than focusing on their core skills and competencies. When we conceived Cinema Luxe, we made the deliberate decision to not supply the AV. Our strongest skillset was elsewhere. We chose to focus on that and hone those skills so that our AV partners can add those qualities to their existing team. If everyone plays to their strengths the projects are elevated as a result.

COMMENT FROM THE COALFACE

Do you think training needs to be improved, and if so, how? From the outside looking in, I think that the push for professional training on the smart home and AV side is already excellent. We try to stay up to date, even though we are not supplying the kit, as it is important for us to understand the current industry recommendations and parameters of the equipment that we are incorporating. I also see many people actively trying to engage in giving CPDs, showing the desire to integrate with other professions, which is hugely positive.

Is there a project you are particularly proud of and why? We are proud of many projects. I think it is the ones that are difficult to deliver that stand out, or the projects with a particularly niche brief that we have managed to hit. From a construction perspective, I am always proud of our commercial projects as they are notoriously difficult environments to work in. From a design perspective, we have worked on several highend residential care homes with screening rooms. The requirements for these spaces are naturally very different from a standard cinema to ensure it is correct for the user – and I feel proud that we are being sort out to design these challenging rooms.

Are there any brands or products you particularly like working with, and why? I particularly enjoy developing our own products which is why we introduced our fabrication facility earlier this year. It enables us to control the quality and lead-time of specialist fabrication items more closely. We have been developing our own cinema seating product too, The Rockstar. The prototypes have been incredibly well received and we are excited to bring this to market in 2024.

What is the best and the worst thing that has happened to you on site? We are a small and tightly knit team, so when things do not go to plan or schedule, it affects us all! We have learnt over the years that problems

are best attacked and dealt with as quickly as possible. If the client sees you approaching issues in the correct manner, there is usually little resistance and it enables you to get the project back on track quickly. The best is always client reaction. I would say that 75-80% of our site time goes into the prep and construction – so end finishes often come together very quickly. When an engaged client sees this happen in real-time it is often the point of most excitement! For us, it is also the positive effect this has on our AV client’s reputation, which is hopefully why we develop the long-term relationships that we have. It is also the reward for the huge amount of work and planning that goes in off-site to enable us to deliver our projects in a slick and professional manner.

What is the most unusual client request you have had? We have had several dedicated karaoke rooms, which bizarrely seems to be a growing market! They have many similarities with the cinema and audio spaces that we design with a few unique challenges, such as robustness and eliminating feedback! Fortunately, we have been able to lean on our historic professional music background and contacts for advice, so we have been able to assist the integrators with specifying the right kit to avoid any issues. We don’t supply AV kit, but we hope that we can bring value from a technical perspective to assist the integrator where required and this is a good example of that.

How do you see the sector changing in the future? Clients are more interior design researched and focused. The shift is happening already, and from our perspective the integrators having the most success are the ones using the room designs to sell the AV equipment, rather than the other way round.

Are there persons/organisations/ companies that have been particularly inspirational in your work life? It is always those with integrity, that treat other people and businesses in the

correct way and how they would expect to be treated themselves. It sounds like a cliché, but people buy from people and those individuals and companies with the right ethics and morals always progress the furthest.

Away from work, what are you interests/hobbies? Most members of Cinema Luxe are either from professional music or have a passion for it. It is something that we seek out in recruitment, and we believe it a good foundation to integrate with our team and adds a unique take on what we do. We have our own recording studios where we write and record, although it always feels like time to do this nowadays is at a premium!

You have magic powers and get one wish concerning the smart home and luxury AV market. What are going to wish for? More collaboration, even between rivals! We are in a growing industry and market and there are enough projects to go around for everyone. A pooling of thoughts, the sharing of skills and resources across the industry will only make the entire sector stronger.

Favourite music and movies? What are you watching/listening to right now? I think that it is a sign of age… however I have been going back in time and re-discovering music that I was listening to years ago. Editors, Santigold, Jay-Z and Kanye, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Depeche Mode have been on heavy rotation recently.

You can invite three people (living or not) out for a meal/drink. Who’s coming and why? Quincy Jones, to try and understand the genius behind the ears and mind, architect Frank Gehry, and Patrick Monahan (my best friend and business partner) – he would be furious if he was not invited!

Designed and built from the ground up, Cinema Luxe creates bespoke rooms for many applications

Meridian tech played a major role in this wide ranging project

Within the living room, the homeowner did not want to see any in-room speakers. Len Wallis Audio specified an 85in TV screen complemented by a pair of Meridian DSP520.2 In-Wall Digital Active Loudspeakers, hidden behind cloth grills and framed in a custom-made aluminium housing. It’s a bold and considered design statement allowing the family to enjoy natural, authentic and lifelike sound. Len Wallis Audio then installed three Meridian DSP640.2 In-Wall Digital Active Loudspeakers behind a 135in Severtson woven Screen within the family’s cinema room. The team decided to also include a pair of Meridian DSP520.2 In-Wall Digital Active Loudspeakers to fill the room with cinematic sound, and a pair of DSP320.2 In-Ceiling Digital Active Loudspeakers at height for a fully immersive Dolby Atmos experience. The bass is delivered by a pair of Meridian DSW Digital Active 12in subwoofers, finished in a custom matt finish to complement the décor of the space. Bass sweeps through the room without creating any audible vibration, and overall, this is a near-reference level immersive cinema space. Indeed, the quality of audio throughout this home is described as exceptional – it’s a standout feature of the property’s design.

FOCAL ARIA EVO X SPEAKS WITH ONE VOICE Focal presents Aria Evo X, a line of high-fidelity loudspeakers to follow in the footsteps of the Aria 900 range, which has enjoyed a decade of success. The French brand has developed this new range as a continuation of the Aria philosophy: ‘to deliver a pure listening experience by providing the best loudspeakers in their category’. Created for home cinema and music only playback, Focal says Aria Evo X pays homage to traditional Hi-Fi with its collection of five products: one compact bookshelf model (Aria Evo X N°1); three slender floor standing loudspeakers (N°2, N°3, N°4) and one additional model for to act as a centre soundstage in a home cinema configuration (Aria Evo X Center). Much like the Aria 900 loudspeaker line launched in 2013, Aria Evo X exists to provide high-fidelity audio that is expressive while accessible in relation to the performance it delivers. The line promises sensational listening pleasure, with the brand’s signature immersive experience says Focal. The loudspeakers boast technological innovations that are exclusive to the brand including the ‘M’-shaped inverted dome TAM tweeter, successor of the TNF tweeter. This feature reproduces treble more faithfully by going further into the high and low ends of the spectrum. The surround on the midrange is equipped with TMD (Tuned Mass Damper)

technology to stabilise how the surround behaves, reducing distortion and delivering perfectly balanced dynamics. The ‘M’ shape of the dome is another Focal innovation, capable of reproducing high frequencies up to 30kHz. In the woofers the magnet has been revamped to deliver more impact in the bass. Focal’s engineers have also reworked the

crossovers with better components to improve loudspeaker balance. The brand is also offering a new Moss finish, as well as Black High Gloss and Prime Walnut finishes. Focal focal.com

LUXMAN INTRODUCES ITS FINEST EVER INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER At the start of its 100th year, Japanese brand Luxman has released what it is calling its ‘finest integrated amplifier yet’– the L-509Z. Introducing the manufacturer’s ‘singlechassis separates’ concept, the new, all-in-one flagship amplifier has, according to Luxman, evolved beyond the concept of a traditional integrated amplifier. Both the preamplifier and power amplifier sections simultaneously use the brand’s new generation amplification feedback engine, LIFES for the first time. The volume control is supported by Luxman’s new LECUA-EX

attenuator system that suppresses sound quality deterioration and realises a more precise feel of operation. By feeding back only the distorted components generated in the audio signal’s journey to the final amp stage, Luxman’s proprietary ODNF amplification circuitry is said to achieve impressive static characteristics and natural sound quality as if it were a nonfeedback system. The L-509Z is equipped with independent LIFES modules, operating simultaneously in each of its fully discrete pre and power

The Luxman L-509Z is available to order now and is part of the IAG Group

sections. The L-509Z’s output section utilises three stage Darlington bipolar transistors in quadruple-paralleled push-pull configuration to achieve the desired output power and reportedly ‘near perfect’ power linearity performance comparable to a standalone power amplifier, developing 120W+120W at 8 ohms and 220W+220W at 4 ohms. For precise control the L-509Z combines a highly precise rotary encoder with a newly developed weighted rotation mechanism to create the LECUA-EX. This approach offers greater reliability and a natural, high-quality operational feel, while 88 steps from 0 to 87dB and an acceleration setting for the speed at which the volume knob is rotated and a long-press setting for the remote control allow for comfortable and thorough volume control action with minimal degradation in sound quality. The L-509Z is also equipped with Luxman’s traditional, highly stable power supply circuitry, featuring a bespoke, highly regulated 600VA El transformer and newly developed largecapacity filter capacitors (10,000μFx 8). MCINTOSH HITS THE POWER BUTTON

Upgrades include enhanced circuit designs with shorter signal paths, updated electrical wiring and bayonet IP68 rated interconnect cables

McIntosh, celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 2024, has announced the launch of its new MC2.1KW Monoblock Power Amplifier – one of the brand’s most powerful amplifiers to date. The tri-chassis product possesses the ability to deliver 2,000W of power.

The first 75 pairs of MC2.1KW sold in 2024 in each country where McIntosh is distributed will include special anniversary badging with ‘75 Years’ engraved in the handles and a special medallion with the 75th logo on top. Leveraging three separate modules – one Output Module that houses McIntosh’s bifilar wound Autoformer and two Power Modules each containing a 1,000W amplifier, the MC2.1KW’s engineering reportedly delivers ‘unmatched’ sound quality. Thanks to the brand’s Autoformer and its ability to output full power at three separate impedances, the full 2,000W of power can be delivered into a speaker no matter if its impedance is 2, 4 or 8 Ohms. It is ideally suited for audio systems that have power hungry loudspeakers, systems located in

extremely large rooms, or for audio enthusiasts who demand the latest and best in state-of-theart home audio amplification. Crafted with stainless steel chassis polished to a gleaming mirrored finish and metal casework, the MC2.1KW features black glass front panels, illuminated logos, rotary knobs, aluminium handles and a responsive blue Watt metre. Following the MC2KW’s introduction in 2005, the next generation MC2.1KW offers many sonic upgrades. Chief among them are substantially larger filter capacitors that improve the performance of low-end frequencies, as well as significantly improving dynamic headroom. There are patented Solid Cinch speaker binding posts for 2 Ohms, 4 Ohms and 8 Ohms, with the connectors for each impedance rating located on a separate platform on the back of the Output Module. Each output platform also has three sets of identical binding posts to facilitate bi- or triwiring the loudspeaker. McIntosh mcintoshlabs.com

MORE CLARITY FROM RUSS ANDREWS The Russ Andrews Clarity Pro 2.0 is the latest iteration of the successful ‘field generator’ products utilising Coherence Technology, created to significantly improve the performance of Hi-Fi and home cinema systems. The Clarity Pro 2.0, not a mains filter in the traditional sense of the word, actively reduces noise and stray electromagnetic fields, which, in turn, benefits the musical presentation from the audio system, says Russ Andrews. Tracing its heritage back to the popular QRT Quantum products, introduced at the CES show in 2006 and subsequently superseded by the Clarity Pro, the new iteration developed once again in conjunction with the US-based inventors of the technology. The new circuit, developed for the 2.0 version, came after extensive testing and cooperation between the two companies, refining and fine-tuning the circuit to give the best performance with a Hi-Fi or home cinema system. The inventors of the technology state that the field generator increases the coherence of the ground plane to neutralise noise caused by discrepancies in time and amplitude on the ground. The result is an audible improvement in the performance quality of the audio signals and, therefore, in the listener’s ability to

76 FEBRUARY 2024

appreciate and gain greater enjoyment from the music. The Clarity Pro 2.0, supplied in a purposedesigned ABS case, should be positioned as close as possible to the Hi-Fi system, like on a spare shelf on the rack or top of components. On the front of the unit, the single control knob can adjust the strength of the effect. The Coherence Technology modules generate a pre-programmed field of a specific pattern

and duration, with the adjustment controlling its strength. Tuning by ear ensures the correct result when the music snaps into focus and sounds ‘right’. Clarity Pro 2.0 is powered by a 12V DC power supply supplied as standard. Russ Andrews russandrews.com
