INEVA SEATING GOES ‘DIRECT TO THE DEALER’ IN THE UK

Ineva Seating, a premier producer of luxury home cinema furniture, has revealed its plans to engage directly with UK dealers. The company says this strategy enables dealers to collaborate closely with the manufacturer, leading to several advantages such as faster design, improved pricing and dealer incentives like CGI room visualisations and demonstration room promotions.

Ineva Seating argues it can deliver a more efficient experience for its clients by connecting directly with dealers. A direct communication channel between dealers and manufacturer accelerates the design process, making it more effective, reducing lead times and expediting order fulfilment. Apart from the perks of swifter design and production durations, dealers directly partnering with Ineva Seating will also benefit from superior pricing. By cutting out intermediaries, Ineva Seating says it can present its products at more attractive prices, enabling dealers to extend these savings to their clientele.

As an added motivation for dealers to collaborate directly with Ineva Seating, the firm is presenting various dealer incentives, such as CGI Renders and demo room deals. These offerings aim to assist dealers in optimally displaying the brand to their clients, allowing them to witness the excellence and practicality of the seating solutions in person.

“We are thrilled to be going direct to dealer in the UK,” said Paul Ricci, MD of Ineva Seating. “This move is a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible service to our customers. By working directly with our dealers, we can ensure that they have access to the best possible pricing and the highest quality seating solutions. We look forward to building even stronger relationships with our UK dealer network and continuing to deliver innovative seating solutions that meet the needs of our customers.”

to increase brightness in dark areas with the Black Equalizer, which makes it easier and more comfortable when seeking objects and opponents. The Game Menu also offers six types of crosshairs for improved aiming. Moreover, the A95L model introduces multiview, a function that lets users watch gameplay guides and walkthroughs simultaneously while playing their favourite titles.

“The new models are uncompromising in realising our vision and bring together decades of Sony’s expertise.” says Masashi Takiguchi, current Head of Pan-European Home Entertainment and Sound and the incoming President of Sony Europe.

PULSE CINEMAS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF SIM2!

A very special Open Day Series will take place on 21-22 June to celebrate a massive milestone in the history of Sim2 as the company marks 30 years in the home cinema industry.

What better way to celebrate than to come and meet the Sim2 team at Pulse Cinemas HQ over the two days of this special Open Day Series, and witness the power of the NERO 4S Gold recently installed in our Reference Cinema, and also find out about some very special offers available on Sim2 products. Massimo Zecchin, International Sales Director at Sim2 will be in attendance to answer any questions you may have and guide you through the fantastic range on offer from Sim2.

“As far as we are aware, we are the only company to have the amazing NERO 4S Gold on permanent demonstration,” says Pulse Cinemas COO, Kapes Patel. “Our Reference Cinema is a seriously high-performance space and it is quite large, so only the very best products thrive in this environment. The NERO 4S Gold is right at home and surpassed even our high expectations for what the product can do. Once installers see this product in action, we are confident they will want to specify the NERO 4S Gold into future projects and so existing cinemas do not miss out, we are also offering a special upgrade programme for existing Sim2 customers.”

Kapes adds, “There are plenty of capable projectors out there, we all know this, so if you want ok performance, fine, but if you want something that feels really special and offers real insight into the vision of content creators, you need a product that uses the desire, imagination and knowledge of a company like Sim2 to

create something unique. You don’t take an SUV created by a corporate company to a track day, right? You take a sports car lovingly created by a specialist. That is the Sim2 difference. Offering your customers something like the NERO 4S Gold not only delivers fantastic performance, for movies, gaming and sports, but it also builds

2023 SHAPING UP WELL FOR TOGETHER FOR CINEMA

It is always a pleasure to hear about the work that Together For Cinema (TFC) does and this month we are pleased to report that 2023 is shaping up well, that installations for the remainder of the year are progressing and that the organisation is not only working on projects for children’s hospices, but in other equally important places that support children and their families.

The first of these is a cinema room installation that was completed by Nethaus earlier this month at Cherry Trees in East Clandon, Surrey, a charity providing exceptional home-from-home, specialist short-break respite visits for children and young adults aged 0-19 with a range of complex disabilities including learning, physical and sensory impairments. Founded in 1980 by a group of parents and doctors, Cherry Trees is a lifeline for the families of more than 100

children and young people who are regularly cared for there, whether that is after school for a few hours, a weekend or a longer stay.

The second is for London charity Resources for Autism, which provides practical services for children and adults with a diagnosis of autism, and for those who love and care for them. Due to start at the end of May, it is being installed by Smart Living Solutions.

The summer months will see Jooced start work on a project at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Walsall, West Midlands, followed by an installation from Ideaworks at We Are Beams in Hextable, Kent which provides comprehensive support services to children and young people with any form of physical, learning or sensory impairment living in Dartford, Gravesham, Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas.

Exclusive Solutions and Majik House are currently finalising designs for a cinema room at Hope House Children’s Hospices in Oswestry, Shropshire and The Space Centre, Preston, Lancashire, whose mission is ‘To provide a place where those with physical, learning or emotional difficulties may more easily acquire skills and enjoy experiences usually denied to them.’

Together For Cinema is also extending its usual remit of working with organisations that cater for children to the Marie Curie Adult Hospice in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, where Art of Smart is undertaking the design and installation of a cinema room for this well-known and respected charity.

“2024 seems a long way away, but, with the network of children’s hospice and others deserving venues we have, I can confidently say that 2024 will be another busy year,” says Ian Morrish, TFC Founder. “We’re expecting to work on another six or seven cinema room installations during the year. It’s impossible for us to know of all the deserving venues in the UK that could use our help, so we’re always grateful when people tell us about them.”

Currently, TFC has 68 companies putting forward charitable grants. They vary in amount, but every one is much appreciated and are vital to help in TFC’s day-to-day running, and of course the long-term security, of the organisation and the difference that it makes.

The latest of these is technology giant Meta, which has enrolled TFC as an Official Partner to channel its AV equipment to good causes. “With so much AV equipment being open to re-purposing, we are delighted that Meta sees a future with TFC,” Ian notes. “Currently we are only placing a handful of products, but this will increase towards the end of 2024 when our Repurposing Programme will develop further.”

As well as charitable grants, intrepid fund raisers take on challenges in support of the TFC cause, and this summer sees two cycling challenges being undertaken, one by an experienced cycling duo, the other is by two keen amateur cyclists, one of whom is Ian himself.

On Friday 23 June industry personality Tom Dellicompagni and his friend Jim Carter will cycle 1,000 miles over nine days. Leaving

from the Red Bull F1 Factory in Milton Keynes, they will ride to the Red Bull Ring racing track in Austria, arriving on Saturday 1 July. If you would like to support this incredible challenge, you can donate at https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/teamride2

Sunday 10 September will see Matt McLernon from LILIN, one of TFC’s Charitable Partners, and Ian ride the 55 miles from London to Brighton. “We will do this unaided, with no safety net and just pure manpower, grit, and good old British spirit and determination,” says Ian. “We’ll also have 16,000 other riders encouraging us! I suspect Matt will pip me to the post, but I’ll definitely see him at the finish line!”

All fundraising activity is much needed and hugely appreciated. The funding is important, but knowing so many people are behind the cause is equally so. “We are so grateful to all those that have, are or will fundraise for us,” Ian concludes. “Whether it’s running marathons or riding across continents, we applaud you.”

ARE PERLISTEN D212S A SUPER SUB?

Our resident reviewer, Richard Stevenson, feels the power of the Perlisten D212s.

Founded in 2016 in Verona, Wisconsin, Perlisten Audio has only recently arrived in the UK courtesy of Karma-AV. One of the first speaker brands to achieve THX’s flagship Dominus certification for larger rooms, the brand offers a rich list of premium freestanding and in-wall loudspeakers and two subwoofer series’ - covering six models ranging from seriously potent to monumentally epic.

Given the cabinet of the latter £9,000 RRP, D215s is 800mm tall and would encroach on the bottom of the test screen, we opted for the marginally saner D212s. This formidable sub packs in two 12in carbon fibre composite cone drivers mounted in a 90° offset push-pull configuration and a 3kW amplifier in a 668mm tall cabinet that is ‘just’ 420mm wide and 550mm deep. At a RRP of around £7,000 it has a lot of stiff competition - but none of them boast the D212s THX Dominus certification.

Intriguingly, the two bespoke Perlisten drivers have +/-30mm of travel and are arranged in a sealed enclosure, one woofer facing forward and the lower one facing into the sealed part of the cabinet. The lower section of the cabinet beneath the internal woofer is extensively vented on three sides.

The woofers are still moving acoustically in phase but are mechanically out of phase, which helps to cancel second order distortion by an additional 10-12dB. The sealed enclosure ensures the low frequencies to remain tight and controlled while the increased surface area of using dual drivers results in prodigious maximum SPL

even down to very low frequencies that reach 15Hz at -6dB in ‘large room’ mode.

The amp is a Perlisten-designed 3kW peak/2.4kW RMS output capable Class-D unit controlled by 32 bit ARM M4 cortex processor with voltage-based limiters and very low 5ms sub-delay (plus DSP) to account for in the system set-up. Connectivity covers stereo XLR and stereo RCA inputs and corresponding pass-through outputs, a 3-12v trigger socket and a USB service port. Controls are via the top-mounted 24in LCD touch-control display for the basics and advanced control via the Perlisten iOS or Android app.

The app allows the control of up to eight subwoofers, with trim levels, phase in 1° steps from 0-270°, polarity, delay from 0-100ms, low-pass slopes form 0dB-24dB/Octave, and four to eight standard EQ sets to fit some generic room shapes. There

is also a 10-band parametric EQ with three user pre-sets. These are entirely manual so you either rock the EQ tuning by ear or deploy thirdparty software, like REW or similar, to measure the output in-room and manually enter the trims.

I can’t help thinking that is a relatively inelegant EQ solution for a sub at this price. Although, you could argue it is highly likely to be partnered with similarly affluent AV processing with flagship versions of Dirac, Audyssey or ARC, all of which can EQ the sub-channels anyway.

Build quality is absolutely outstanding throughout, although the lack of grille is unusual in the UK if not a deal breaker. Its ludicrous 68kg notwithstanding (over 80kg in the very sturdy packaging), the tall and relatively narrow form factor makes the D212s fairly

22 JUNE 2023 ESSENTIAL REVIEW /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

flexible in placement compared to much lower and wider models such as REL’s similarly-priced No.31. The lower section of the cabinet vents on the front, left and right panels, which will make building the D212s into room cabinetry a compromise, albeit still an option given its ostensibly sealed enclosure design.

Using Denon’s flagship AVC-A1H AVR, we set up the D212s in the front corner of the cinema room and let Audyssey’s paid-for MultiEQ-X system do the sub-EQ trim. That said, in some irony, it didn’t have to do a lot as the Perlisten produced a relatively smooth response in my room straight out-ofthe box. Quite why it seems to smooth some of the inherent architectural room nodes without EQ may well be due to the front-facing driver and LF energy emerging from three sides in the lower half of the cabinet, but smooth it does.

Suitably dialled in with phase, level and some subtle out-board EQ tweaks to best work the room and integration with the main speakers, the D212s set out its stall as an absolute sonic beast. The beast part of that sentence ought to be in bold-face with foot-high letters. No other subwoofer has produced such hard-hitting, super-fast and ridiculously high sound pressure LFE in my 20m2 room and the D212s has the headroom to do the same in a room four times the size with consummate ease.

Ripping through a bunch of classic movie test scenes, this is a sub that is wholly at home with big and very deep LFE effects, from the tyrannosaurus footsteps in Jurassic Park to driving home the percussive impact of gunfire in The Matrix or Heat. Super low frequency ambient effects (such as submarine rumble in any of the well-produced war films) are catered for with aplomb, creating a physical effect you can feel more than hear. As an all-round, ludicrously impressive LFE sub for cinema systems, the D212s has few peers at the price in terms of sheer impact and depth-plumbing ability.

Having the nicely reactive app to hand will be essential if you are romping through various musical genres or artists via a streaming app. The D212s dynamically reveals the different bass levels in musical mixes and its high gain via either of the line level connections makes for frequent gain or trim adjustment to get different mixes sounding balanced. You end up reducing the gain for bass-heavy rap and dance and then nudging it back up by several points for tunes with lighter LF content in the mix. To be fair, that is far from unusual with larger, powerful subs, but several brands smooth that dynamic gain change via high-level inputs, which isn’t an option here.

That said, hit the right gain balance and the D212s turns just about any genre of music into a visceral, ‘live’ feeling session that encourages anything from foot tapping to air-guitar duck walking around the room. As if it were a track almost designed to highlight the Perlisten’s incredible depth and agility, We Come 1 by Faithless has several breaks with a deepening bass sweep that goes sub-sonic. The D212s is one of the few subs I have ever tried that can get to the very end of the sweep at the same SPL throughout – and that is mighty impressive.

Perlisten’s D212s is a supreme feat of audio and physical engineering, from the overall architecture to the custom amplifier and drivers, and it delivers spectacularly impressive LFE in even the largest rooms. The inclusion of the manual PEQ system baffles me and the lack of high-level inputs seems a little frugal and perhaps uncompromisingly cinema-centric. Yet, if I was looking to deliver the biggest, fastest and deepest LFE in an uncompromising large-scale home cinema system installation, there is very little to touch the D212s at or around the price. Well, not in my room where the D215s just won’t fit!

GOING PRO

Following the recent launch of the new L Series line source array at a private Hollywood Bowl event, Nick Fichte, Director of Sales for L-Acoustics Creations, looks at how professional audio loudspeaker technologies can benefit Luxury residential and commercial installations.

Customer experiences for residential and light commercial installations such as hotels, restaurants and bars are increasingly being enhanced as a result of improvements in quality to audio systems - and especially developments in loudspeaker technology. Many of those developments have trickled down from the professional audio world, where the global demand for engaging, immersive sound for live events has never been higher.

As such, the market for loudspeakers is perhaps more buoyant than ever, with advancements in technology and evolving consumer demand for quality live experiences driving parallel successes in luxury residential and commercial AV.

Dr Christian Heil and a team of sound engineers at L-Acoustics revolutionised modern sound production in 1992 by developing the modern line source array, achieving greater throw, uniform audience coverage, directional precision and clarity. Refined and updated many times in the last three decades, the line source array for large commercial venues has reached a pinnacle with the new L Series launched at the Hollywood Bowl in April this year.

Line source technology has unique performance benefits that can answer many of

the demands and challenges of commercial and luxury home audio installations.

A line array is made up of a number of usually identical loudspeaker elements mounted in a line and fed in phase to create a near perfect line source of sound. The distance between adjacent drivers is close enough that they constructively interfere with each other to project sound further than traditional loudspeakers, with a more evenly distributed sound output pattern.

Line arrays can achieve high SPL output over a large area that is focused on the audience area, which avoids reflected energy from ceilings or walls. In indoor venues, this translates to better clarity and consistency of sound and in outdoor spaces line source technology improves the range and power performance of the sound system.

In residential and commercial settingswhich often have low ceilings compared to a dedicated performance venue, and hard surfaces - attaining intelligible sound for highperformance entertainment over a wide area can be a major challenge. Compounded with a desire for discrete installation expressed by many venues and achieving required performance with traditional loudspeakers can be near impossible.

L-Acoustics brings benefits of line source array technology to luxury residential-friendly L-Acoustics Creations models. Both the Syva and new Soka models bring L-Acoustics’ line source heritage to a sleek, plug-and-play loudspeaker design, using colinear source array.

In the flagship Syva, this configuration incorporates six medium-frequency and three high-frequency speakers in a J-shaped progressive curvature format, allowing installers to create professional grade audio in residential and smaller commercial venues. The cabinet is just 144mm wide, 209mm deep and 1,300mm tall, and is available in a range of RAL custom colours, making for incredibly discreet installation.

As well as being favoured by residential installers, Syva has found favour with integrators working on corporate events, fashion and trade shows, as well as for sound reinforcement in amphitheatres and performing arts centres. The small cabinet, exceptional high SPL and wide dispersion characterises the collinear source array to make this type of loudspeaker an attractive option for houses of worship as well as intimate settings such as home cinemas or lounge bars.

The Soka is smaller still, at 99mm wide and deep, and just over 1m tall, and is suitable for onwall or in-wall mounting. The driver configuration incorporates nine 3.5in MF drivers and three 1in HF diaphragms in a colinear configuration that uses the same constructive interference physics of a line array. That delivers the same benefits in terms of high SPL, extended range and wide horizontal / narrow vertical dispersion, making it ideal for a range of commercial and premium residential installations.

Coaxial loudspeaker technology is another concept that was first designed for professional audio, but has found favour in commercial and domestic environments thanks to its unique acoustics benefits. The technology was first developed for recording studios, enabling sound from HF and low frequency drivers to come cohesively from the same point source. Setting the HF driver at the centre of the bass

cone affords performance benefits including a wider field of listening and a symmetrical radial pattern of dispersion. Coaxial loudspeakers are also popular in stage monitors as they give the musicians a wider, more even sound field thanks to the single source characteristic.

Another advantage of the coaxial driver is the reduced baffle size, allowing designers to reduce the overall real estate of the loudspeaker. Coaxial driver loudspeakers such as L-Acoustics X4i can be incredibly compact but deliver exceptional SPL and clarity. Despite being just 116mm wide, 109mm tall and just 99mm deep, the X4i can deliver up to 110dB maximum SPL across 65Hz to 20kHz. It is also IP55 weatherproof and available in a range of RAL colours, making it a real ‘do-it-all’ speaker for commercial and residential installs.

This exceptional size-to-performance ratio neatly addresses some of the prevailing trends in the CI and commercial audio sector, including outdoor AV, multi-zone audio and discrete, décor-sympathetic installation.

Both end clients and consumer-facing businesses are looking for loudspeakers that are high-performance, discreet, rugged and waterproof. The emphasis on durability and weather resistance has led these clients to seek out professional audio systems that have a proven track record in intense outdoor use such as on cruise ships and outdoor amphitheatres. The ‘variable’ UK weather will not pose a problem for these workhorse audio systems.

Multi-zone audio systems that enable synchronised audio playback across different zones, inside and outside the same venue or home, are also continuing their popularity. Yet getting loudspeakers originally conceived and tuned to be used in an enclosed space to sound powerful, and engaging in an open space is a significant engineering challenge.

The miniaturisation of loudspeakers is also on the rise, allowing for sleeker, more compact designs that blend into décor or venue architecture. That adds yet another challenging demand in creating loudspeakers powerful enough to fill larger areas with sound using ever

smaller and discrete cabinet designs. That is exceptionally challenging using traditional transducers and traditional cabinet design, where driver displacement and enclosure volume play a significant role in speaker sensitivity across the audio spectrum.

Immersive sound, clear and intelligible audio and well-distributed sound coverage are where hospitality businesses can differentiate themselves from competitors and attract more customers. The professional audio environment has been addressing those demands for decades, making pro-audio technologies a natural fit for these projects.

The audio benefits of line array loudspeakers across industry-leading SPL per size, unparalleled consistency over the audience area, and improved rejection everywhere else, can deliver truly immersive sound throughout the venue. Similarly, the benefits of coaxial loudspeaker technology have been incorporated in many recording studios and stage sets where compact cabinets, coherent point-source sound and wide, radial dispersion are required.

Those line array and coaxial technology benefits are very often the defining requirements of smaller commercial venues and large residential installations too. Shrinking full-size line array technology into a smaller colinear array loudspeaker design brings many of the benefits of a full-size line array into a more domestically friendly package, and utilising coaxial drivers in a small enclosure offers huge benefits to installers looking to incorporate great sound in aesthetically-lead venues.

The concept of using professional-audio derived loudspeaker technologies in luxury residential and commercial audio continues to gain popularity with high-end integrators. For an exceptional example of integrator Homeplay using colinear source and coaxial driver loudspeakers to create a high SPL multi-channel residential sound system, check out the article on The Cotswold House in Essential Install’s spring 2023 Outdoor AV supplement, that comes with this issue.

INTEGRATED SPEAKERS VS. FLOOR STANDING SPEAKERS

In an industry where there are highperforming integrated speakers and statement floorstanding speakers, it’s important to understand the key factors that customers should be thinking about when they are trying to decide between the two options.

Aesthetics can easily override any potential differences in performance between the two approaches. Some customers want to revel in the appearance of their loudspeakers and they are keen to give them pride of place. The loudspeakers might be seen as high-quality pieces of furniture and are considered to be ornamental or even sculptural assets to the room. Other customers (and many interior designers!) abhor the idea of floor-standing loudspeakers, equating them to necessary appliances or equipment which should be kept out of sight. To borrow from Le Corbusier, they are simply just part of the ‘machine for living in.’

Naturally, the potential disruption associated with the installation of in-wall loudspeakers can be a showstopper. A room which is being built or refurbished lends itself to having loudspeakers built into the walls or ceiling far more easily than a beautifully decorated and finished space.

There are sometimes occasions when a customer is happy to consider either type of loudspeaker. In these cases, the performance can be compared. Some customers won’t even be considering in-walls, believing the level of performance they are after is available only from floorstanders. However, we’ve seen cases where such customers have performed a complete volte-face once they’ve heard a system using the very best in-wall offerings.

INTEGRATED SPEAKERS –PROS AND CONS

Integrated loudspeakers keep floors clear and therefore increase flexibility for the position of other items in the room, such as furniture and ornaments. When the loudspeakers are integrated seamlessly into the control structure of the home, everyone in the household can benefit from their performance without having

to ‘switch on the Hi-Fi’. Some users really like the effect of being immersed in sound without the obvious presence of large floorstanders; they report that it’s easier to disassociate what they are hearing from the kit that is producing it – always the aim for a good loudspeaker design.

The biggest issue can be the need to build integrated loudspeakers into the fabric of the house. Then, once installed, integrated loudspeakers are not easy to move! A decision that a TV would be better if it were on a different wall is complicated by the fact that the loudspeakers are likely to need re-installing.

FLOOR-STANDING SPEAKERS – PROS AND CONS

It’s usually possible to fine-tune the positioning of floor-standing loudspeakers. This allows experimentation with spacing and toe-in to elicit the best possible sonic image at the listening position. Floor-standers can be moved within a room, or into another room should the need arise. Moving the loudspeakers may mean

some work to relocate their connecting cables, but this is usually less onerous than cutting new holes into walls or ceilings.

However, floor-standers may be non-starters due to the not-inconsiderable issue of personal taste in regard to aesthetics; some customers just don’t want to see the loudspeakers. This is particularly understandable for rooms with period décor. There is an old joke about a ‘Chippendale video cabinet’; well, have you ever seen a three-way bass-reflex monitor in a regency style?! Another issue in some applications is that floor-standers are, well, on the floor! If the requirement is for sound to be produced at anything like head-height or above, almost all floor-standers literally fall short. Such use-cases can include the surround speakers in a cinema system, not to mention (obviously) any height channels. Similarly, in rooms where the seating or other furniture blocks the passage of sound to the listeners’ ears, integrated loudspeakers offer the option of getting the sound up into the air.

THE INVISIBLES!

Wayne Hyde, Technical Manager, Sales and Marketing Support at Custom AV Distribution, takes a look at speaker trends.

At CAVD we’re finding that the invisible speaker category, which has always been healthy, is continuing to grow. There’s a requirement to do more than plaster and decorate over these in some rooms. With more walls finished with fabrics and veneers, we are being asked to provide advice and assistance to deliver these more demanding solutions. There’s a strong future for the invisible category and to any integrator who hasn’t worked with invisible speakers, we would say get on board! Clients, interior designers and architects love them. It’s a step-up in appearance, from a traditional inwall or ceiling speaker that has a circular grille. Plaster over speakers are totally invisible and produce sound which utilises the surrounding surfaces where they are placed. You can still expect a convincing performance that can even play loud enough for partying. Especially when you add matching invisible subwoofers.

The home cinema sector is heading for a significant change, with regards to the design process. CEDIA’s ‘Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice’ paper is near to release, and industry awareness, through social media, forums, ISE seminars and webinars is significant. The result will mean a better experience for clients. We’re finding

that integrators are now beginning to ask for loudspeaker specs, deep detailed specs! These are required to make calculations on how speakers and subwoofers will behave and perform across a multi-seat space like media and cinema rooms. This is different from what’s expected from a speaker for a Dolby Atmos studio and Hi-Fi use for example, where there’s normally one key listening position. For this category, speakers with compression drivers and outboard digital crossovers, which have high sensitivity, can be a great tool. The amplifier feeds the drive unit directly rather than passing through a ‘thirsty’ analogue passive crossover inside the speaker. Options to angle all speakers towards listening areas will improve the experience as will choosing speakers with good on and off-axis responses. These criteria, along with others, help to ensure better results across the rows of seating.

For multiroom audio, demand is slightly waning for entry-level ceiling speakerswhilst higher-end audio in select rooms is favoured. This is catered for with CI speakers, which employ premium driver and crossover components which can deliver a more addictive musical experience. Floor-standing Hi-Fi speakers do this best of course; we’re finding

that active wireless streaming high-end speakers are meeting this need. Consumer trends are showing a growing need to enjoy not just music through distributed audio, but podcasts and audiobooks as well. Better quality distributed audio systems make these formats easier to follow and immerse yourself into, especially at low volume levels without disturbing other rooms.

Lastly, on the commercial side, at CAVD we’re seeing a demand for better distributed audio systems, packages that will differentiate the integrator’s proposal from the usual run-ofthe-mill installed system. This can be in-ceiling or suspended pendant speakers with matching subwoofers to rig to the ceiling. Premium grade components partnered with DSP amplifiers tuned and voiced to really stand out and make a statement. In a retail environment for example, the combination produces an eye-opening performance that adds something special to a customer’s experience. For audio or video conferencing calls, the clearer the sound, the more productive the meeting. For challenging acoustic spaces, such as art galleries and churches, clearer, controlled audio means music and dialogue can be conveyed at sensible volume levels.

CABINET EVOLVES

Keir Livock, Channel Sales Manager at Anatech Distribution, discusses the evolution of speaker construction technology.

audio playback, it is obvious that the sound radiation is far lower than traditional MDF or plywood cabinets.

AE has also driven innovation through choice of materials for driver construction, traditionally using hard-anodised aluminium cones and more recently carbon-fibre for the AE500 range. Both of these are light and inflexible with excellent damping, delivering a pistonic performance even at high volumes. The material used for woofers and tweeters will be matched within each speaker, creating a cohesive sonic signature.

We’ve been incredibly impressed with all the AE products we have on demo and the carbon fibre 500 series in particular are a revelation in terms of timing and control.

Acoustic Energy products, including cinema packages, on-wall speakers, and stands, are available now from Anatech Distribution.

So, when choosing a speaker brand always consider the materials used in the construction, with the basic design approach remaining relatively unchanged, they can make all the difference.

The design at the core of speaker construction - drivers, crossovers and a holding structure to insulate against vibration - have not changed much in over 70 years. Rather than adapting these principles, speaker innovations have largely been made ‘around’ them - architectural and invisible speakers effectively using part of the wall structure as the cabinet (and in some cases the driver), active speakers adding amplification to the box, smart speakers going one step further with connectivity and streaming. Stripped to its basic function though, a speaker’s performance will live or die on the quality of key components, the strength of the engineering and the choice of materials used.

For the best possible reproduction of sound, strong consideration should be given to the cabinet itself - which being found lacking in architectural speakers, leads more audiophile customers to traditional ‘box’ speaker designs for their main listening rooms. Naturally, for these rooms customers also wish for speakers to be beautifully designed and constructed.

CI dealers generally have access to a lot of the same brands which produce both architectural and ‘box’ speakers, but within our dealer community, we have a split between pure Hi-Fi dealers, integrators and those who do both. For our more audio-focussed integrators there is often a desire to differentiate from the well-known brands. With a brand like Acoustic Energy we’re able to offer a product which delivers rich sound, is fantastic looking and keenly priced - so it’s ticking a lot of boxes. It’s also home-grown.

BUILT IN BRITAIN

British-based Acoustic Energy’s speaker cabinets are made from HDF (High Density Fibreboard), MDF and at the higher end, RSC (Resonance Suppression Composite) technology - a high mass inert layer sandwiched between two sheets of MDF to create self-damping, inert panels. These are both heavier than standard cabinet materials and better damped. From touch alone during

MAKE ROOM FOR MEDIA AND DATA CABINETS

Dan Winterton, Sales and Marketing Director, Antiference, delves into how data cabinets can deliver.

For so many years, data cabinets have been fitted to commercial installations to hold equipment associated with the data network. This includes a lot of the usual suspects such as cables, patch panels, routers and Ethernet switches etc. These cabinets, the unsung heroes of the data network installation are essential to the system and come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate all the required kit.

In more recent times, we have begun to see a data cabinet appear in many more installations - including small commercial installs as well as domestic jobs too. The (formerly) ‘data’ cabinets have fast become adaptable for a variety of applications, very much becoming a ‘media and data’ cabinet for a simple home data and AV network. Devices such as HDMI splitters/matrix systems, TV distribution amplifiers, an ISP router plus Ethernet switch are fitted together thus creating the ‘home hub’.

Why am I talking about a 19in media and data cabinet I hear you ask? Doesn’t seem like the most interesting subject to discuss when there are tonnes of funky and very much cooler kit on the market for a custom audio-visual installation.

Well, this small home hub installation is a growing area of interest, and whilst the demand is positive, this can often bring challenges which we have not encountered as a professional industry before. One of these is space. The size of the space often dictates what is possible and sometimes the access also restricts the installation and can be the difference between having the install fitted ideally and professionally and having to adopt a ‘make do’ approach.

Another challenge is quality as sometimes the ‘make do’ option can come with a compromise such as facing having to put in substandard gear.

Antiference has recently developed a range of media and data cabinets for the home hub installation which do not compromise. They are manufactured from high quality mild steel with a powder coated finish and incorporate a lockable glass door, removable sides, and adjustable rack position.

One of the main benefits to this new range of cabinets is that they are supplied flat packed ready for self-assembly. This enables the installer to assemble the cabinet in a potential

tight space or pass through a loft hatch before assembly, which is not always possible with a pre-built cabinet.

The assembly is very simple and can be carried out in around 15 mins so avoids a timeconsuming build process.

The range offers either a 450mm or 600mm deep cabinet option with a choice of heights from 4U to 15U.

It is easy to see why this will be a popular option to increase the standard of installation, whilst easing the process.

For more information, contact Antiference or your usual supplier.

BRINGING THE INDOORS OUT

extensions

Homeowners have fallen back in love with their gardens, causing a surge in demand for the same AV creature comforts homeowners enjoy inside their homes. Outdoor display sales are on the rise as clients look to recreate their living room setups outside. Many of these homeowners are drawn to the appeal of alfresco home theatres in their gardens so they can enjoy Netflix while grilling on the barbecue. This has created a new opportunity for AV integrators to create thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces that cater to this new way that homeowners are using their gardens.

Britons have spent more than £16 billion on their gardens in the past year, creating their own tranquil spaces to relax in as they look forward to the warm summer months. As clients are now using their gardens as an extension of their living rooms, homeowners are seeking to replicate their entertainment setups outside.

Premiere clients are particularly interested in using their gardens as living rooms because they want to create a luxurious outdoor space that is an extension of their indoor living spaces. They want to be able to entertain guests in style and enjoy all the creature comforts of home while enjoying the beauty of nature. Outdoor home theatres are a great way to achieve this goal because they allow homeowners to enjoy movies and TV shows in the comfort of their own garden.

This revitalised market has recently benefited from advancements in weather-resistant outdoor display technology, meaning these types of displays are no longer only reserved for five-star hotels or rooftop bars. With up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness, outdoor displays can now be confidently used on bright sunny days without the typical glare and reflections you’d see if you brought your traditional display outside. Their screen size used to be a limiting factor for outdoor displays as users are typically seated further away from the screen when compared to their living room. However, many models now boast sizes up to 75in - which lets clients enjoy a more immersive outdoor theatre experience without having to compromise on viewing position or furniture placement.

However, a 55in, 65in, or 75in display will inevitably stand out against the foliage found in a well-tended garden. This is why it’s important for AV integrators to carefully consider how they introduce outdoor displays into their clients’ outdoor spaces. Luckily for AV integrators, it’s possible to borrow some of the same techniques used to conceal displays inside the home, in the garden.

Concealing the display from view when it isn’t in use is an effective strategy to maintain a consistent design aesthetic across your garden. IP-rated display lift mechanisms can be recessed into the ground or built into

architectural features to cleverly conceal the mechanism from view.

While there’s already a healthy appetite for in-built display concealment solutions in gardens, mainstream clients are looking for less permanent additions to the structure of their garden. For these clients, rollable outdoor theatres like those from Future Automation offer a less permanent alternative to a fully fitted display concealment solution.

The Cineair and Cineair Luxe display lifts are designed to conceal and reveal either a 55in or 65in Samsung Terrace display. The inclusion of castor wheels makes them easy to reposition the entire cabinet so clients can choose how and where they want to set up their display. When the display is lowered, these cabinets turn into architectural cabinetry that seamlessly blends into any outdoor space so guests will have no idea there’s a home theatre system tucked away inside the cabinet. There’s even a built-in Samsung Terrace soundbar hidden behind an architectural grill so clients don’t have to worry about connecting external audio to the display.

The future of outdoor entertainment is bright. With advancements in weather-resistant displays, it is easier than ever to create a beautiful and functional outdoor entertainment space that brings an immersive cinematic experience to clients’ gardens.

Ollie French, Commercial Director at support innovators Future Automation, says clients are using their gardens as
of their living rooms, and it is creating new demand in the AV industry.

PUTTING THE INSTALLER’S NEEDS FIRST

A well-designed rack helps ensure that all the necessary equipment can be fitted and cabled quickly and neatly within a space. Getting this part of the project right, the beating heart of a home automation system, is also significant in making service, maintenance and upgrade visits as smooth and efficient as possible.

In recent years, we’ve seen installers shift towards a greater demand for flexibility in their requirements from an AV rack. There are two key reasons for this move – the first is accessibility.

Static racks can limit ease of access and make servicing and adding new AV equipment challenging, as well as unnecessarily timeconsuming. In contrast, moveable racks, featuring slide-out or rotating designs, make access much easier, whilst also providing a much more space-conscious solution.

At Snap One, we recently launched a new line of Strong in-cabinet slide-out racks, carefully designed so that integrators no longer have to sacrifice rack space for a slider base.

The second driver is the environment available for rack installation. As the market for professional smart home installation continues to thrive, it’s not always possible for integrators to find the right rack location, particularly on smaller renovation projects, or where there is competition from an architect or interior designer for use of the available space. Not every home has a dedicated rack room, or a perfectly flat floor, or an easily accessible area that can be the right home for centralised AV equipment.

Again, product innovation is helping to meet these challenges. Rack features, such as pedal-activated slide and rotation release, as well as multiple locking positions can ensure a stable rack platform for AV equipment. Alternatively, slide and rotation mechanisms can again improve versatility and be unlocked using convenient foot pedals to enable single-person operation in confined spaces.

ADAPTING TO TECHNOLOGIES

Mounts are now delivering the industry’s lowest profiles to match today’s thinner TVs, whilst providing the key features needed to offer flexible placement and adjustment of screens for an optimised viewing experience. For installers, mounting options need to consider a variety of positions, including fixed, tilt, articulating, motion, ceiling and even outdoor.

We recently developed the Strong Carbon series, a range designed with installercentric features like post-install levelling, easy adjusting, magnetic pull cords on the locking mechanisms for easy cord management, and UL listing to meet these requirements with added reassurance.

Installers faced with organising hardware locally, such as, digital matrix switches, amps, players, processors, receivers and other devices recognise that aesthetics, as well as versatility, matter. To meet these demands, we have a purpose-built line of recessed Strong VersaBoxes which can be easily paired with

Strong mounting solutions to hide media extenders, power conditioners, or an AppleTV, creating a pristine in-room set up. Additionally, with a specially designed removable panel on the VersaBox Pro, power management tools, such as a compact WattBox, can be easily ‘dropped in’ for a fully integrated solution.

The Strong range of dealer-inspired racks, TV mounts, unique backbox solutions and accessories is available from Snap One to make every installation and maintenance project as smooth and straightforward as possible.

Racks, mounts and AV furniture continue to be vitally important parts of every integrator’s smart home installation. Snap One argues its a moveable feast.

QUALITY CONCIOUS

James Attfield, Managing Director at Turnstone AV, sole UK importer, exclusive distributor and support provider for Vogel’s audio visual mounting solutions, has some words of caution for installers.

We are also seeing a significant increase in larger format TV wall mounts, and for its part Vogel’s range of Elite sku’s now have double arm (Elite TVM 5845) and scissor arm (Elite TVM 5855) for TV’s up to 100in with weights up to 75Kg.

We are seeing a very clear distinction now between entry-level mass-market products that are available everywhere, and more premium brands that are active in the satellite and aerial market - as well as all the way up to high-end custom installers (CI). Whilst the market therefore becomes more fragmented, it is important for brands like Vogel’s to deliver feature rich products that are easy to install, are well designed and have a hallmark of quality.

The smaller number of sales both offline and online in the retail market has led to a preponderance of entry level products coming into the market, I do urge the custom install market not to be seduced by poor-quality low-price products in what is very much a high-end, high quality, high cash margin sector.

In June, Vogel’s will be 50 years old and over the last 10 years the company has worked tirelessly to expand and improve on its more advanced offerings, and subsequently has cemented the company’s position as not only a dominant brand in retail, but more recently a major player in the custom installation arena and as a pioneer in design and movement quality, producing a suite of products that are more aligned than ever before to the install market.

As an example, Vogel’s has now introduced the Signature range of wall mounts and the marquee product is the TVM 7675 Pro. Equipped with ethernet and RS232, the product can now be attached to the local network and also has drivers for the Control 4, Crestron and Crestron Home. This is a game changer for Vogel’s and for the CI market in general in the UK.

The engineering quality of Vogel’s wall mounts means that these and all turn sku’s are great for accurate recesses as there is zero tilt, drag or fall. We are seeing more of these installations where turn is required to access the TV in the recess, and the installer can proceed happy in the knowledge that the bracket will retain its form for years to come!

Flat TV wall mounts are still important for CI market. At Turnstone AV we urge installers to be diligent about what you are paying for these products, there is a clear relationship between price and quality and even if the product sits flat behind the TV the considerations of accessibility, security and usability should still be taken into account. As an example, Comfort TVM 3605 in 100% Recyclable packaging is £64.95 and will hold 75Kg and 100in TV. Vogels is one of the most powerful brands in this sector for Europe with strong purchasing leverage, if you are paying more than this or your chosen brand can’t get to this size or weight, I suggest you should question the quality and ultimately the commitment your chosen brand has to this category!

THE STYLE COUNCIL

Outdoor entertainment is also becoming big business, again driven by the home building/ decorating shows and plethora of gardening improvement shows. It’s even happening in the UK, with our unpredictable weather, but most definitely across Europe and other areas with more settled weather patterns. Sanus has just launched a pair of dedicated outdoor TV mounts – tilting and full motion – to satisfy the growing demand for outdoor entertainment areas.

Once again this provides real opportunities for installers. The TV, the mount, cabling and an audio system to go with it. Just think of it as another room in the house and make the suggestion to the client that they could easily add an outdoor entertainment area while they are drawing up the requirements list for their install.

Style and convenience are the driving forces in this category. The aesthetic of a person’s environment is so much more important these days, which I would put down to the massive increase in interior design and house building programmes on TV, and the success of events like Grand Designs Live and The Homebuilding and Renovating shows. This has created a realisation that technology, which is often intrusive, can, with a little thought and planning, be complementary to the room’s décor and enhance the environment.

Take for instance the rise in multi-room streaming services and how this has simplified the audio systems in many homes – no stacks of black boxes, big speakers and trailing wires anymore. We’ve noticed a huge uptake in demand for products like our stands and wall mounts for Sonos as these types of products have taken off. Putting your streaming speaker on display on a matching stand can make it a focal point, and give it an almost sculptural presence in a room.

The same can be said for TV mounts. In the old CRT days, the TV was a big box that sat on a piece of furniture. That furniture was often only there to act as a stand for the TV. With the dawn of flat panels there was a realisation that they could be taken off the furniture and fixed the wall, which revolutionised the layout of rooms.

The floorspace could be liberated and the TV securely mounted to the wall – improving the viewing experience and making the room a safer environment as the risk of accidents with the TV was removed.

The attachment sale opportunities for TV mounts are a great opportunity for installers. Not only is it an additional sale, but the margins are substantially better than can ever be achieved by just supplying the TV!

We continue to see requirements for additional AV equipment to support the ever-growing smart home category and this has had a huge impact on the high demand of AV racks within the residential and commercial space. For installers, the Sanus AV Racks provide a simplicity of options on size and include all the required parts to complete a set-up on-site. Sanus offers four pre-assembled sizes: 15U, 27U, 36U and 44U, and three stackable skeleton racks (10U, 15U and 20U) which have the option to be wall-mounted with a swingarm mounting solution. The skeleton racks are are great space saving option as they come flat packed, take up very little room in a van and can be assembled on site in just 15 minutes.

For those not yet familiar with the Niko brand, Andy explains, “Niko Home Control is a Belgian manufactured smart home solution, designed and built to work in complete harmony with the electrical installation systems of a home. Whilst many smart home systems focus on the audio distribution, home cinema or video distribution, Niko controls lighting, heating, ventilation and shading as its core functions - making it a true native when it comes to home automation. It can of course also control music and many partner brands. IFTTT, voice control, HVAC control and so forth

are all easy to integrate and there are also drivers for full compatibility with Control4 and ELAN systems.”

Andy and his team became involved in distributing and supporting Niko as they were experienced installers of the system and following some international restructuring the UK office that was dealing with Niko closed. Andy approached the company and the era of Moss Technical supplying and supporting the Niko brand for the UK began in April of 2011.

Underlining what he feels are the main strengths of the Niko concept, Andy says, “Niko is a good fit for many parts of the smart home market. For established installers it delivers a

strong level of control and ease of installation many will appreciate and with over 100 years of engineering experience behind the brand, it’s a brand you can really rely on. For those just coming into the market, especially from an electrical installation background, Niko is primarily focussed on a level of control they are familiar with including lighting, heating, ventilation and shading control. As additional functionality such as networking, multiroom music systems, AV/TV distribution are optional, Niko is less daunting for newer installers and provides a great gateway into the market. Whether an experienced installer or a newby, Niko has something to offer.”

Andy adds, “We are actively involved in the field with installation support and are fully accredited and practicing NICEIC electricians, so have loads of on-site experience and as such are able to fully and genuinely support the brand no matter what the issue.”

Andy expands on the level of support and understating on offer, “Moss Technical are unique in that we are not only the suppliers of the product, but we install on-site where we have projects in areas where there are no trained installers, working with clients directly in order to deliver the end result. Crawling through attics, carrying out rewires and installing equipment means that we know what it is like for installers and understand the system inside and out. We are also experienced installers of many other types of electrical systems such as CCTV, gate control

and alarms so our knowledge of the issues encountered is very thorough. We will often help installers out of hours in order to make sure the client is happy and their expectations are met or exceeded.”

Training in the UK for the brand is modular and is carried out via live video link, where an installer can follow the training in manageable sessions from the comfort of their own office and not have to write off time and cost in travel and accommodation. The Niko training is also CEDIA accredited and CEU training points are awarded on completion of each module. The training can also be split in that the more basic modules can be carried out at the point of, or in advance of specifying Niko for a project, and then the more advanced parts can be carried out to suit conditions and time schedules nearer the point of completion and handover.

There are also a number of installations for demo purposes in the UK, including the Moss Technical offices in Pyle, Bridgend. Also, at Swindon in the National Self Build & Renovation Centre and at the Education House at the Gravenhill site in Bicester.

Andy adds, “We also exhibit at shows throughout the UK and can also carry out virtual live demo’s with installers and clients directly. Our goal is to help the installer win a project as we both win, so we are happy to converse and help sell the benefits of Niko directly to a client on the installer’s behalf.”

Andy highlights some of the key takeaways from how Niko operates, “Niko has a large R&D department and are constantly improving the product. We are seeing more DALI control in domestic installation now and Niko are up to speed with that. Also skilled at software developments and roll out, Niko customers and installers carry on benefiting from R&D from improvements and new functionality as these are automatically uploaded to existing systems. The company has a strong history here updating its systems to include voice control, IFTTT, HVAC control and partner brand integration as these became available, this will of course continue.”

As for the future, Andy is confident Niko can keep pace, “As our expectations grow, based on our life experiences, technology needs to meet these needs. Until we had the functionality of a smart phone, we didn’t realise the possibilities. Now that we know what is possible, we expect it, and this means increasingly customers will expect it from the home. This is why Niko is constantly working on meeting these needs in an ever-changing market. The beauty of Niko is that these improvements are implemented with a simple software upgrade and not having to change hardware! Niko is also able to adapt to different budget situations meaning its adaptable across the smart home sector.”

Maintaining a strong work/life balance is also important to Andy, “There’s no denying that I love my work, when I am driving it. When it starts to drive me, then I need a release and time away with Nicky is really important to us both. Our camper van is a haven, getting around the UK and exploring new parts of the country on our bikes is bliss, especially the Cotswolds. For when I need solitude and a complete switch off, fly fishing is my passion where the tranquillity and wildlife that experience is a gift.

“Nicky founded and runs a charity called Cost Of Cancer (www.costofcancer.org.uk) which is a registered charity issuing grants to people going through cancer treatment, often outlaying hundreds or even thousands of pounds to pay peoples bills, mortgage, rent and expenses to ease the money worries that come hand in hand with having cancer.”

IN THEORY!

Our Install Pioneer Series returns as EI talks with AV industry veteran Marc Bertrand, who has been involved with brands such as Tannoy, helped shape a major distribution company and has recently been appointed COO for Pro Audio Technology and Theory Audio Design.

Tell us about your time at Tannoy (1994-2008)

Tannoy is where I cut my teeth, it was fun to be involved with a transformation of that magnitude in the Americas. Vegas was a significant milestone for me. First, we secured the audio at the Hard Rock, and then the biggest turning point was winning over the Bellagio, Venetian, and Paris resorts and casinos when they were built. From our success with those projects, we secured the Wynn properties (and several more following).

With Tannoy, I was lucky enough to be part of a team that moulded, shaped, and built a very special brand, so I look back at my time there very fondly.

Tell us about the formation and achievements of TC Group Americas

TC Group Americas was formed a few years after Tannoy was purchased by TC Group A/S out of Denmark. The TC Group of companies was comprised of TC Electronic, TC Helicon, TC Applied Technologies, Tannoy, Lab Gruppen and was the global distributor for Dynaudio Professional products at the time.

You could think of TC Group Americas as the wholly-owned master distributor of all brands for the Americas. The key was the

market segment approach, we broke out our teams into commercial, residential and musical instruments (MI) segments. Very strong performance resulted from that strategy.

Tell us about your recent appointment at Pro Audio Technology and Theory Audio Design

Theory is truly different. Don’t let the style and elegance fool you, Theory products have professional grade, high performance transducers under the hood as well as serious

amplification and DSP. They also benefit from mechanical and industrial design that are second to none, along with well thought out and extremely practical accessories.

With Theory, we have the solutions and an equally well-defined roadmap; the exciting part now (especially for me!) is having a sharp focus on building the partner relationships globally in addition to an organisation that is as strong or stronger than the products themselves. Theory makes a simple promise: to deliver the best performance available in any product category we enter. A bold claim, and we stand behind it.

Pro Audio Technology (or PRO as we call it for short) takes performance to the next level with a product range developed specifically for high-end private cinemas and we are a very strong and well-respected player in that space. What excites me about PRO is we are seeing major potential for the brand in high-end commercial spaces. The more industry folks that are being exposed to it, the more have noted they could use the brand in those types of applications.

Do you have any comment on the UK and European development of the brand?

Both the UK and Europe are extremely important and key geographic markets. I have a particular affinity for both and have very high expectations for our performance in each market. It is and will be a big focus for us. Stay tuned!

For those who are not aware of or haven’t used the PRO and Theory, what are the main things dealers should be aware of?

Both brands offer performance that is second to none. I challenge anyone to prove me otherwise. What you get with PRO and Theory is a level of sonic clarity, nuance and detail from background to foreground audio at ANY SPL.

The elegant simplicity of the Theory product range is also a breath of fresh air. Theory packs a wide, versatile application range into very few models, which is very attractive for CI and commercial integrators and consultants.

PRO is intended to be installed in high-end private cinemas primarily behind acoustically transparent fabric and projection screens. So, the focus is on performance and installability. Also, PRO speakers do not break. That’s right, I said they do not break. The amps will clip long before the drivers or any of the speaker components will.

Are there any products from each range that you feel are particularly strong at the moment?

Both brands are very strong across the board. We don’t introduce new models just to introduce new models. They are all purpose and application driven. However, for fun if you are asking me to call out a strong model from each brand, I would say the Theory sb25 and the PRO SR-28212ai.

How do you feel the AV and smart home markets are performing currently? How could they improve?

The residential AV and smart home markets did very well throughout the pandemic because more people invested in their homes and ways to enjoy the various spaces they live in. Most would argue that as the world opened up, spending (or

at least the number of transactions) reduced in these areas as people shifted their disposable income to travel and entertainment experiences outside of the home.

However, our experience is the integrators that get it right regardless of the economy, continued to be successful. These are the integrators that have strong relationships with their clientele and builders, architects and designers. There is still plenty of disposable income to be spent out there, people just want to work with people they have positive experiences with. If you’re a good and reliable partner, person and company to do business with, chances are your business will thrive.

In terms of what the industry could do better (beyond being a good partner)? Stop selling gear. It’s not about the gear. It’s about an improved experience. Technology is supposed to improve our lives and life experiences, not complicate things and get in the way. With smart home technology that means reducing the number of disparate apps end users are forced to use and integrating a seamless system with the technology, interactions and commands that matter to each client (and each person within the client’s household – because it’s very unlikely it’s the same for a teenager than it is for grandma).

To be successful at selling audio, we say stop talking about the gear and focus on why the client wants a system in the first place. Maybe it’s to have distributed audio throughout the house so that by a simple command an end user can listen to their favourite music in any room. For others it’s wanting to feel immersed in movies or a favourite sport. Finding out what the client wants, rather than trying to sell them gear will win them over every time.

If you have the opportunity to provide a high-quality demo that replicates that desired experience – do it. For us, bringing clients to the PRO and Theory Experience Centre sells a system - every single time. Once the client signs the dotted line, it’s now your job to make the gear disappear.

The residential integrators that are most successful know not to focus on selling gear. They are selling an experience. They are selling a feeling. They are selling thrill.

If someone has never watched a game of ice hockey, why should they start now?

I’m very biased on this question, because it’s the best sport on the planet (in my opinion of course!) very fast, very tough, very fun to watch.

You are a keen golfer, do you a favourite player or course?

Playing golf with my two boys – well, men now. They’re my two favourite golfers, and you can’t just choose one course, there’s too many great ones! A personal favourite of mine is Kingsbarns near St. Andrews, Scotland. There was an epic Tannoy/Lab golf event there that was Ryder Cup style. Your readers will be ecstatic to learn the Europeans took that crown.

What is the best thing about being involved in the AV and smart home market?

Being back in this space is like coming home. There’s a huge sense of community, even amongst competitors. It’s a place where interesting and cool technologies keep spurring us all on to be more innovative and adaptive to the market needs and evolving technology trends. Plain and simple, the best thing about this industry is its good fun.

IT’S TIM TIME!

Tell us a little about your company, what do you specialise in? Who is involved?

At AV.com our aim is to be the number one destination for home entertainment products. When the brand launched, our objective was to provide a wide choice of products, with a large volume of stock, powered by an informative website and great customer service.

Our team in Bacup, Lancashire, provides direct support to customers for sales or service by phone, email, and of course in person at our fully renovated showroom. Over in York, our commercial teams work hard on getting the right products, working closely with our content teams to ensure our website answers all our customers’ questions.

We pride ourselves on stock holding – no-one, and particularly installers on project deadlines, want to order something and find out the retailer doesn’t have it. It’s also clear that different customers want to buy in different ways, so at AV.com we strive to make sure that if you phone, email, visit in person or simply visit our site, the level of service remains high.

What are you doing today work-wise?

Right now, we are continuing to look for new brands and ensure we have the products and ranges that consumers are looking for. We

tantalising reader questionnaire.

continue to make improvements to the website both in terms of content and user experience, while also adding exciting new features that help customers learn more and find their ideal product. Oh, and as it’s the start of the month the team are updating the AV.com playlist –everyone puts three songs on each month – it’s a great way of hearing some new music and learning more about your team!

Tell us about the projects you are working on right now

With a continuous focus on improving the experience for customers and helping people to find the product that best fits their needs, we are developing online tools such as our Home Cinema Builder, which helps guide customers through the process of building and configuring their ideal solution.

62 JUNE 2023 COMMENT FROM THE COALFACE /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com
What could you learn from Guns n Roses’ Slash?

You recently completed a new showroom,

tell us about that

Many consumers prefer to deal with us in person and experience the range of products that AV.com has available. The showroom allows us to welcome consumers who want to shop this way. We have four booths which are ready and running - we really like the idea of having several systems ready to go so that, if you are simply collecting an item, you can also get inspiration for your next purchase. In addition to the open areas, we have two rooms for quiet and professional demonstrations. One of the rooms features a full Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 home cinema set up, and another for our two channel Hi-Fi demonstrations. We also have a large car park, a great coffee machine and even an EV charger, so customers are well catered for!

How do you feel the industry in general is going right now?

There are challenges for the industry as a whole, and I think for most of us who have been involved for many years have experienced similar market dynamics in the past. We sell luxury items, and in light of the current economic backdrop, customers are more selective on where they want to spend. At the same time, with streaming services at the level they are, there is an increased demand for products which enhance this experience. Linking products to customers’ lifestyles is key!

What areas of the smart home and luxury AV sector need to improve and how?

We need to stop talking so much about the product’s technical specs and more about its result, less about amplifier topologies and impedances, and more about how great music can really enhance your home and bring joy. We also need to do the work to make the products easy to use for consumers and explain the differences between them. I feel there is a lot of confusion out there that puts people off engaging with specialist retailers and installers, and they ultimately settle for a product which doesn’t meet their needs or perform how they hoped.

Is there a project/part of the business you are particularly proud of?

I joined the AV.com business as it was acquired in 2021, and the speed and focus of the new owners - alongside the commitment from the existing team to get the business integrated and re-launched - was one of the most fulfilling projects of my career. The teamwork and spirit during that process was just fantastic to be a part of, and that starting point gave the whole business a new platform that we could build on.

Are there any brands or products you particularly like working with, and why?

We work with lots of different brands and have great working relationships across the range. The industry is incredibly fast paced so it’s great when brands have structures in place for fast responses. I particularly welcome brands that have moved to online portals that give us access to comprehensive information regarding product availability and digital assets. We also welcome in-person training so that our staff are up to speed with product knowledge and we have some brands that are superb at this.

How do you see the sector changing in the future?

I think consumers are getting more and more comfortable with smart devices, and I believe we will see more and more connected items around the house. I’m amazed at how many Google Home and Alexa devices I see in people’s homes, and I think it will be important for brands to develop products that work seamlessly within this eco-system. I really like voice control too and feel that this makes products far more accessible for everyone in the household. In our main arena of Hi-Fi and home cinema, we need to keep delivering the performance, but more products need to add the connectivity and ease of use that is becoming more common in everyday items. The other day I walked past my five-year-old daughter’s room as she asked Google to turn her light on – blew my mind that to her even a switch will be old fashioned!

Are there persons/organisations/ companies that have been particularly inspirational in your work life? Why?

As is the case for anyone, throughout your own career there are people or organisations you work with who influence you and give you new ways of looking at your personal development. I have been fortunate to work for both Yamaha and KEF, brands with a strong heritage, who have a clear philosophy that drives their business. That focus determines the culture and strategy, and keeping aligned to that is what allows business like theirs to maintain their position in the market. For me, more broadly I have been impressed by how so many brands in our industry have managed to navigate the challenges of the last couple of years. What this has shown me is that innovation and great design will always have a place and customers will keep coming back to that.

Away from work what are you interests/hobbies?

Well, I have two young children so that takes up a lot of time but after that it doesn’t look a lot different to work! I love music, playing my guitar or listening to some vinyl. I love a good series or movie – I really enjoyed the latest Mandalorian series on Disney+. It looked and sounded great.

You have magic powers and get one wish concerning the smart home and luxury AV market, what are going to wish for? Got to be wireless power, right?

Favourite music and movies? What are you watching/listening to right now?

Favourites is a nightmare to answer but music that is never far from the system include The Prodigy and Guns N Roses, right now my tip though is Pokey Lafarge. Go check him out!

You can invite three people (living or not) out for a meal/drink, who’s coming and why?

Slash, so he can teach me the Nightrain solo, Gazza to thank him for that goal against Scotland and Jesus for an amazing life story.

CRAFTING AN EFFECTIVE MARKETING PLAN

David Fell, successful systems integrator with in-depth knowledge of technology, business development and business strategy on a global scale, continues his ‘Installer Academy’ series exclusively for EI. This month, ‘Crafting an Effective Marketing Plan: Tips and Strategies for Success’.

Marketing is the core component of any successful business. It is the process of identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer needs and wants through the creation and delivery of valuable products and services. A well-planned and executed marketing plan can help you attract and retain customers, increase brand awareness and ultimately drive sales.

A marketing plan is a comprehensive document that outlines your marketing strategies, tactics and activities. It helps you to focus on your target audience, identify your unique selling proposition (USP), and allocate your marketing budget to the most effective channels. A marketing plan is essential for any business, regardless of its size or industry. It ensures that you are targeting the right audience with the right message at the right time and in the right place. A well-crafted marketing plan can help you to stay ahead of the competition, increase customer loyalty and drive revenue growth.

IDENTIFYING YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

It is essential to understand your target audience’s demographics, interests, behaviours and pain points to create effective marketing messages that resonate with them. To identify

your target audience, you can start by analysing your existing customer base. Look at their demographics, such as age, gender, income and education level. Identify their interests, behaviours and pain points. Use this information to create customer personas that represent your ideal customers. Customer personas are fictional characters that represent the different types of customers you are targeting, helping you to create marketing messages that resonate with your target audience.

CONDUCTING MARKET RESEARCH

Market research is the process of gathering information about your target audience, competitors and industry trends. It involves both primary and secondary research methods. Primary research involves collecting data directly from your target audience through surveys, focus groups, or interviews. Secondary research involves analysing existing data from sources such as industry reports, government statistics and competitor websites. By conducting market research, you can identify gaps in your market, understand your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses and uncover new opportunities.

SETTING MARKETING OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

Marketing objectives are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART) goals that align with your overall business objectives. They should be based on your market research findings and target audience personas. Marketing objectives can include increasing brand awareness, generating leads, increasing sales, improving customer retention, or launching a new product or service. They should be specific, measurable and have a clear timeframe. By setting marketing objectives and goals, you can measure the success of your marketing activities and make adjustments.

DEVELOPING A UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION (USP)

A USP is a concise statement that explains why your product or service is better than your competitors’ offerings. Your USP should be based on your market research findings and target audience personas. To develop your USP, you must identify what sets you apart. This could be your product’s unique features, the quality of your service, or the benefits your customers receive. Your USP should be concise, easy to understand and communicate.

It should also include the cost of any marketing tools or software needed. By creating a marketing budget, you can ensure that you are allocating your marketing spend to the most effective channels and maximising your return on investment (ROI).

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MARKETING CHANNELS

Your marketing channels should be based on your target audience’s personas and marketing objectives. They should be the most effective channels to reach your target audience and achieve your marketing goals. Marketing channels can include social media marketing, email marketing, content marketing, search engine optimisation (SEO), paid advertising and events. It is essential to choose the channels that are most effective for your target audience.

DEVELOPING A CONTENT MARKETING STRATEGY

Content marketing is the process of creating and distributing valuable content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience. It is a powerful way to engage with your target audience and establish your brand as a thought leader in your industry. A content marketing strategy is a plan that outlines your content creation and

distribution activities. To develop a content marketing strategy, you need to identify the types of content that resonate with your target audience. This could include blog posts, videos, infographics, or podcasts. You must also determine how to distribute your content, such as through social media, email marketing, or search engine optimisation (SEO). By developing a content marketing strategy, you can create valuable content that engages your target audience and drives traffic to your website.

UTILISING THE LATEST DIGITAL MARKETING TOOLS

Digital marketing tools are software applications that help you to automate and optimise your marketing activities. They can include tools for social media marketing, email marketing, content marketing, SEO and analytics. Digital marketing tools can help you to save time, increase efficiency and maximise your marketing ROI. To utilise the latest digital marketing tools, you need to identify the tools that are most effective for your target audience and marketing objectives. You also need to invest in training and education to ensure that you are using the tools effectively. By utilising the latest digital marketing tools, you can automate your marketing activities, optimise your campaigns, and achieve your marketing goals.

MEASURING AND ANALYSING MARKETING EFFORTS

Measuring and analysing your marketing efforts is crucial to understanding the effectiveness of your marketing plan. It involves tracking your marketing metrics and analysing your results to determine what is working and needs to be

adjusted. Marketing metrics can include website traffic, leads, conversions, sales and customer retention rates. By measuring and analysing your marketing efforts, you can identify areas for improvement, make data-driven decisions and optimise your marketing activities for maximum impact. It is essential to track your marketing metrics regularly and make adjustments to your marketing plan when necessary.

MAKING ADJUSTMENTS TO YOUR MARKETING PLAN

It is important to keep reviewing your marketing metrics regularly and making changes an when necessary. Adjustments can include changing your marketing channels, adjusting your marketing budget, or refining your target audience personas. By making adjustments you can ensure that your marketing activities are effective, efficient and aligned with your overall business objectives. It is essential to be flexible and adaptable in your marketing approach to maximise your marketing ROI.

CONCLUSION

Crafting an effective marketing plan is crucial to achieving your business objectives. It involves identifying your target audience, conducting market research, setting marketing objectives and goals, developing a unique selling proposition (USP), creating a marketing budget, choosing the right marketing channels, developing a content marketing strategy, utilising the latest digital marketing tools, measuring and analysing your marketing efforts, and making adjustments to your marketing plan. By following these tips and strategies, you can create a successful marketing plan to set your business up for success.

To maintain the quality levels seen throughout the rest of the development, AV specialists The AViology were called upon to specify and fit out the screening room, and the team enlisted the help of distributor AWE to assist in the specification and supply of the appropriate equipment.

68 JUNE 2023 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY

Although this will be a shared facility, the approach was very similar to creating a personal home cinema room and the focus remained very much on creating a high-end space that delivers the best audio-visual experience possible. To achieve this AWE supplied a Sony VPLXW7000 native 4K laser projector along with a 7.2.4 Bowers & Wilkins speaker system and suitable amplification.

The extensive audio setup includes three CWM7.3S2 and four CWM7.5S2 in-wall speakers powered by a Denon AVCX6700 AV receiver twinned with a Rotel RMB-1555 power amplifier, as well as two CCM7.5S2 inceiling speakers, two ISW-4 in-wall subwoofers and a SA1000 subwoofer amplifier. A Sony UBPX800M2B.CEK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision provides a local source.

Dan Wheadon at The AViology explains, “I’ve used AWE for some time. I’d previously heard a Bowers & Wilkins cinema room and I was very impressed, so now being able to source through AWE is a real bonus. I was looking for the right opportunity to use Bowers & Wilkins in a cinema room and this came up. It was a bit of a

no-brainer; I know and trust the brand and have a great relationship with the supplier.

“We’ve gone to the higher end because performance is crucial; we want the clients to be impressed and when they walk into the room and all systems are fired up for them to go, ‘wow, that sounds and looks great’.”

RESIDENT FOCUSED

The residents were also front of mind when the room was being designed, of course, as Dan says, “These are high-end apartments, and the cinema room is part of the package – obviously a cinema space sounds like a cool shared amenity, but from our side, we don’t want to just tick a box, we want the residents to be blown away when they first use it.”

With the cinema room being in the basement of a residential building and surrounded by apartments, one area that did require more thought than a standard private cinema space was the noise output. As well as the potential impact on residents, the building also had to abide by all noise, ventilation, mechanical and electrical regulations.

JUNE 2023 69 essentialinstall.com @Install_mag /Essentialinstall ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY
High-performance shared spaces are a major aspect of the project

Dan says, “We’re putting a substantial number of high-powered speakers into the walls, so we needed to carefully consider the impact of noise bleeding through to the apartments and the surrounding areas. Obviously, as it’s part of a large apartment complex, the mechanical side of things are strictly regulated too. So, for example where the rack was going to be, we had to work out the exact heat output to have the correct extraction as this forms part of the complex heat recovery and ventilation system across the entire block.”

AWE was on hand to provide information and offer technical assistance to ensure these measurements were accurate.

Dan explains, “There’s an acoustic consultant employed for the whole complex

for all aspects of noise control, of course one of these was the noise output of the cinema room. AWE was able to assist us with calculating the exact noise output levels for the room based on the equipment purchased from them. These were submitted to the acoustic consultant, the same with the heat output for the equipment. We were able to submit that to the mechanical and electrical consultants to make sure that it complied within the constraints that they have to work with.”

It was also important to ensure the room was easy to use, with simple controls for elements such as lighting and AV Control. Dan adds, “If it was someone’s home, we might have more options for the user, but this is going to be used by a wide range of people with different

technical abilities. The room has the same backend equipment, but on the user-facing side it’s a case of keeping it simple.”

”With the construction team on site having to deal with various delays due to COVID-19 and materials shortages, the flexibility of the AWE team was particularly beneficial throughout the project,” concludes Dan, “I’ve had a great relationship with AWE for some time now and the team were very helpful getting stock allocated. They were able to line up all the stock and held the order for us until we were ready to take delivery on site. That side of it was very good as always.”

EDUCATING THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW

The whole point of working with the college is to offer better opportunities. “It’s about giving back. And giving someone a chance to do something they didn’t think they could do, but now they can,” he says.

It’s an added benefit that creating this strong foundation for students also helps AV companies and reenergises the opportunities to get people in the door. More knowledge is beneficial to the students and makes them better engineers when they become employed.

Electricus has offered four classes at Waltham, including fascinating subjects like smart lighting and music. All the training answers two simple questions:

• How does it work?

• Why does it work?

HOW DO WE FACE THE OBSTACLES?

For Kyri, grassroots efforts are key. Having conversations and providing opportunities for young people and career changers to learn about the smart home technology industry is vital.

Integrators and other industry professionals should get connected with colleges that offer electrical courses. “I’d say more information targeted towards colleges would be good because they’re steady. People could walk through the door and have the smart home courses as part of their learning options. It might open someone’s eyes to go, ‘What’s that about? Let me read more about it’ as part of their prospectus,” he says.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kyri Androu, owner of Electricus Audio Visual realised he needed to add more engineers to its growing team. There was just one problem: the engineers he was working with didn’t have the necessary experience.

So, he set about creating a strategic solution: train the workforce early.

“Electricians know how to run cables, but they can’t terminate. If you can terminate a cable properly when you’re dealing with high voltages, why can’t you terminate low voltage?” Kyri questions. When he was approached by Waltham Forrest College, he knew it would be a great way to educate the future engineers of tomorrow.

He’d taught himself the AV trade, but it doesn’t have to be as complicated for new students. He explains, “Why not give a kickstart to someone else who’s doing their electrical apprenticeship? They’ll have a feel or some form of experience with AV, understand it a bit better, which gives them a better job opportunity going forward.”

As they learn, they may continue with electrical career pathway or love AV and decide it’s a career they will enjoy. Either way, Kyri emphasises, “Through the college, we’re giving them a foundation. It’s being able to understand basic level stuff, so they’ve got a good foundation. With a strong foundation, they can go out into the workforce and say, ‘I can help you with that so we’re doing it properly.’”

Kyri has found that since he’s been working with students, he’s becoming even more effective in conversations with his clients because he’s more clearly able to explain why he’s making project choices.

CHALLENGES IN DEVELOPING THE WORKFORCE

The path to successful workforce development is beginning to become clearer, although it’s not without challenges. Kyri points out a few obstacles he’s noticed.

General lack of awareness of the industry. “Most people don’t know this industry actually exists unless they’re in the ultra-high net worth space. Even those people don’t really know. They know they’ve got something in the house that when they push a button, something happens, but they don’t actually understand they’ve got a smart home,” he notes.

Clients aren’t necessarily managing their own smart home systems – integrators often work with the maintenance team. The clients who can afford ultra luxury solutions likely know the systems they have. They know they have a Lutron lighting system, for instance, but they’re happy knowing that when they push a button or touch screen, and something happens in their home. The maintenance teams are the people who understand how the technology works more than the client.

As for Kyri, he’s not slowing down his efforts. In fact, he wants to carry it on to more learning institutions. He explains, “I’ve got proof of concept. I know it’s working. I know I’ve helped a few people at least because they’ve come to our Instagram and messaged us saying ‘I really love what I’m doing now. You gave me good insights and it’s opened the door.’”

So far, Kyri’s model has directly impacted three students from the college. The students got opportunities in three different companies they may never have gotten before. And the companies may not have known about these guys before, either.

It certainly gives students hope – and the industry. Opportunity has been top of mind for most people hiring and looking for work in the growing smart home technology industry, and this new focus on workforce development brings a new level of excitement. Educating the future of tomorrow, as Kyri likes to say, is a winwin for everyone, and a model that could work around the globe.

MCINTOSH MAKES ITS MARK

McIntosh, has announced the launch of the ML1 MKII, a new and improved version of the brand’s original 1970s ML1.

The ML1 MKII is a unique loudspeaker where vintage style meets contemporary sound, explains the maker. Reborn with a similar bass response as the initial iteration but without the need of an equaliser, the ML1 MKII can be connected with amplifiers up to 600W to

fill the largest of rooms. It also features wide dispersion, which allows for an equal distribution of sound throughout the listening area.

McIntosh says the external design of the ML1 MKII retains the same charm as the original ML1 with its oiled American Walnut solid wood cabinets and satin finish veneers. However, internally, it features a full modern revamp to reflect McIntosh’s present-day

18Gbps HDMI, audio, bi-directional IR, RS232, and USB/KVM up to lengths of 100m over standard copper network architecture, or greater distances using the built-in fiber SFP network interface.

The IP300UHD-RX receiver features a second RJ45 LAN port for daisy-chaining the HDMI signal onto further IP300UHD-RX units. With a full 18Gbps HDMI scaling chipset on board, the HDMI output can be adjusted to lower resolutions where legacy displays are required in the same system as full 4K. The scaling capabilities of the receiver also allow for videowall deployment.

Shipping in June, the Dante-enabled IP350UHD-TX and IP350UHD-RX can support both 4K60 4:4:4 video and Dante audio distribution on a single network. A second RJ45 connection allows for the Dante audio network interface to be segregated from the video over IP network whenever required.

All units can be powered via PoE from the network switch, or locally should the switch not support PoE.

Linn has launched an all-new flagship loudspeaker – 360 – featuring new cabinet, new drive units, new electronics, new everything in fact.

Linn says the speaker produces a performance with unprecedented clarity and realism, that’s entirely absent of sonic colouration. Incorporating innovative drive unit and amplifier technologies, 360 turns out Linn’s lowest ever levels of audible distortion. The honed curves of its cabinet are partnered with meticulously matched drive units to deliver the cleanest possible dispersion characteristics, says the maker. All that is experienced with 360 is sound-stage; with vocals suspended in space and true-to-life scale and depth listeners devoid of the sense they are listening to a pair of stereo speakers, says Linn.

The 360’s curvaceous cabinet, intricately machined trim and range of dynamic finishes combine to present an overall aesthetic that is familiar, yet with ultra-modern flair and contemporary class, says its creator.

Critical to 360’s sonic character, is the wholesale elimination of audible distortion brought about by the cutting-edge material science which drove development of the drive

units and their subsequent integration with Linn’s latest amplifier technologies in both the Bass System and new 360 Array. When these acoustic and electronic innovations are deployed alongside the company’s established loudspeaker technologies – Exakt and Space Optimisation – 360 has been designed to become audibly invisible. The tweeter is the first 19mm Beryllium dome seen in the audio industry. Tooled by Linn, this drive unit now has all of its inherent distortion and resonance pushed far above the range of human hearing – beyond even the range detectable by Linn engineers’ measurement system.

The midrange dome is crafted from thin-ply, woven carbon fibre, a cutting-edge composite originally utilised by NASA for the Mars rover, proving the perfect mix of stiffness and lightness.

Both upper and lower bass drive units employ an aluminium-magnesium alloy, also selected for its more-than-ample stiffness, thus ensuring precise piston-like behaviour without deviation.

X MARKS THE SPOT FOR CHORD COMPANY

Chord Company has reimagined a classic, timeproven analogue interconnect from its longestrunning cable range, Signature. The new SignatureX Tuned ARAY features upgraded materials, construction and specification, making it the best Signature analogue interconnect in the range’s 25-year history, explains the company.

The SignatureX Tuned ARAY is described as a cuttingedge, high-performance analogue interconnect benefitting from the latest Chord Company cable technologies and drawing on the Wiltshire specialist’s near-40-year UK cable design and manufacturing expertise. Handmade in England for 25 years, the new SignatureX Tuned ARAY has been upgraded with XLPE (Cross-linked Polythene) insulation, following its earlier introduction in the award-winning SignatureXL speaker and power cables. The upgraded insulation complements the high-performance shielding architecture and proprietary Tuned ARAY conductor geometry technology carried forward from the previous generation model.

SignatureX Tuned ARAY benefits from ultralow-mass RCA connectors (with precision PTFE surrounds); high-performance XLR and DIN connectors are also available. The contact areas/ pins are plated with the recently released ChorAlloy plating technology and a special zero-compression strain-relief system avoids any changes in impedance where the cable is terminated.

The cable’s high-quality conductors are multi-stranded silver-plated OFC types with XLPE insulation, complemented by a highdensity silver-plated braid and foil combination for high-frequency shielding.

The SignatureX Tuned ARAY interconnect is available in a range of useful configurations, including DIN, RCA and XLR to suit all Naim Audio devices, including the NAP250/300/500 and the new Classic range, a turntable-ready version (to order), plus tonearm cables in slim (two-conductor) or reference (four-conductor) versions from 1.2m, fitted with straight or rightangle tonearm connectors.

Chord Company is also taking the opportunity to announce that all future Signature range interconnects will be upgraded to XLPE insulation.
