SAME OLD SITUATIONISTS?

There has been lots of discussion recently, especially postpandemic, about how to make work more human-friendly. Much of this discussion has revolved around location, with increased home working, and environmental issues such as better lighting and more human centric systems. All valuable areas for sure, but what if we were looking at ‘work’ all wrong - and we should not be trying to work at all, but play.

A perhaps unexpected source for shaping the modern workplace comes from a branch of political theory and philosophy that was birthed by a collection of leftist artists and social revolutionaries in 1950s. Situationist International (SI) was the organised arm of the Situationist movement and was prominent in Europe from its formation in 1957 to its dissolution in 1972. This group’s foundations were derived mostly from libertarian Marxism as well as avant-garde art movements like Dada and Surrealism.

So, what the hell has this got to do with the modern world of work? Well one of this group’s most controversial arguments was that everything of real value in human life came from play and not work. ‘Work’ structures, they argued, were mostly the invention of capitalists who wanted to extend their control over workers and isolate them from what made them happy. That is not to say situationists were ‘lazy’, far from it, they were very busy, its just that they looked at the world through a prism of play and not work, so even menial tasks could and should take on an element of fun.

Some forms of meditation also touch on this, encouraging practitioners to train themselves to live in the moment, relax and gently concentrate on what they doing, which, the theory is, promotes more satisfaction and connection to our true nature.

Some modern work practices do try to tap into this idea, although not in the way that the situationists had intended. ‘Gamification’ systems look to introduce an element of ‘fun’ by providing workers with digital structures that encourage them to complete tasks faster and in larger numbers. These sorts of systems can be seen in the service industry, driving/delivery work and in pick and collect warehousing systems. They ‘reward’ workers by setting targets and structures that they can check in on, compare with colleagues and see how their day is progressing. Companies hope that these structures will create a more human and fun response to being asked to complete their tasks, some rewarding with more time off, extra remuneration, but so far most large companies are hoping the system on its own will increase productivity. Millions has been spent developing these systems, so even if these attempts are rather cynical, it does suggest they believe ‘gaming’ work has something to offer.

Imagine, however, what can be achieved when these principles are applied for real and we seriously try to look at work as a game, as fun and structure our systems to encourage this. Now some jobs and tasks are harder to turn into fun than others of course, but one of the keys to this is variety. Breaking down longer more ‘boring’ tasks into smaller groups and introducing more variety to every work day is a good place to start. It is also good to encourage as much voluntary group interaction and comradeship as possible. Other good examples include sharing mealtimes, and well structured, but friendly rivalries for set tasks such as sales. Choice equals freedom and fun, so where practical allow staff to make choices about the workplace and what takes place there. In the end, a lot of this comes down to perception - perceive something as work, its more likely a negative thought process will prevail, make fun more possible, and the result is different.

KALEIDESCAPE UK VISIT HAILED A SUCCESS

Sixty-five dealers took part over three focused events to underline the benefits of including Kaleidescape in home cinema projects.

In a move to underline its presence in the UK market and keep dealers fully informed on the most recent developments, Kaleidescape, sent top executives, Vice President of International & Marine Sales, Tim Barnes, and Vice President, Marketing, Norma Garcia-Muro, on a weeklong visit to Pulse Cinemas, UK distributor for the brand.

The distributor reports that 65 dealers took part in a series of specially curated QnA and demonstration sessions hosted at Pulse Cinemas HQ and also at Minotti London, where the company has a further demonstration suite.

Norma speaking about the event and with particular reference to Pulse Cinemas HQ, said, “I also think what really separates this space is that it was in the most immersive environment. I mean, ideally you want to be in a cinema environment, right? You have the right acoustics, and everything has been calibrated because you need to feel the difference and for me coming from the film world, that is exactly why directors and producers create content. We want you to be totally immersed in our story and I mean, I am doing applause, I don’t know if you can hear it, but this space is amazing. I want to stay here, I am kind of jealous I didn’t hit you up for my 50th birthday party, but I would have brought it over here because the space really does do that.”

Tim added, “I work with a few other distributors, and this is very unique because

of the showroom experience. There are very few people that have a showroom like this and have the different theatres where we can show our products. I think once again just like when we were in London (Minotti London Showroom) I think up here the dealers are very passionate and there was some great dialogue today in the theatre and you know this centre is beautiful, we were in a beautiful theatre being able to talk to dealers, show the products and have an open dialogue and get a lot of feedback.”

Pulse Cinemas reports a very positive reaction from dealers who attended with this comment from Ben Hobbs, Managing Director Cinema@ Home, being typical, “It was great to meet Tim and Norma at Pulse Cinemas, find out more about the Kaleidescape story and future plans. As home cinema builders we know that complex cinema systems are only as good as the weakest part of the system, Kaleidescape ensures that only the very best audio and video is presented to the home cinema equipment. That way the projectors, amplifiers and speakers can all shine.”

The partnership comes concurrent with the justreleased MK2 version of these models announced recently, which deliver a boost in GPU power, upgraded state-of-the-art system components, a redesigned cooling system, a new premium backlit remote control and an attractive custom case designed from the ground up to create the new industry standard for dedicated video processors. French loudspeaker manufacturer, Focal, continues its push into the custom installation (CI) and commercial sectors by partnering with specialist AV distributor, CUK Group, to supply and support its full range of integration products in the UK.

Focal’s integration offering has expanded significantly in recent years, with the launch of the Littora outdoor and marine range and the growth of its in-wall loudspeaker line, which now mirrors the performance levels of its Hi-Fi offering, through to the 1000 Series Utopia models, which feature signature Focal technologies such as ‘W’ composite cones and beryllium tweeters.

Although the ink is still drying on the partnership agreement, there is already a wealth of Focal knowledge within CUK Group as CI Channel Manager, Phil Roe, explained, “In my previous life as an integrator, I have had the pleasure of demonstrating and supplying Focal products to my clients, all of whom have been blown away by the audio quality we have been able to deliver. I’m thrilled to be working with the Focal team again and look forward to bringing these amazing products to a wider market.”

Mike Smith, Head of Sales, Focal and Naim UK added, “The CI and commercial channels have been identified as a key growth area for Focal. The engineering team in Saint-Étienne have delivered a fantastic range of products for this market and the partnership with CUK group adds the channel specific expertise we need to support our integration customers in delivering some very special audio and cinema systems in the UK.”

CUK Group will supply Focal products to UK integrators from its East Kilbride distribution center, but plans are already underway to develop a CI demonstration facility to showcase the best of Focal’s solutions in the south of England.

SONOS EXPANDS INTO COMMERCIAL SPACES WITH SONOS PRO

Sonos’ new SaaS offering makes it easy to bring audio to businesses with remote monitoring and management, commercially-licensed music and personalised support. The launch is US-only currently but other regions will follow. The UK is quoted as 12-24 months away.

Sonos has announced Sonos Pro, a new flexible software as a service (SaaS) offering that makes it easy for businesses to deliver sound across each of their locations. A new product category for Sonos, the subscription-based offering includes a simple dashboard to remotely manage a system across multiple locations, commercially-licensed music and personalised support. The service works with a business’ existing Sonos hardware to fill any space with sound.

“As consumers return to brick-and-mortar, retail stores and restaurants are leveraging music,

visuals and scents to create a sensory in-store experience that builds an emotional connection with customers,” said Patrick Spence, CEO of Sonos. “We’ve seen incredible organic growth for Sonos in commercial spaces as businesses invest in sound solutions to engage customers, which presents a huge opportunity for us. After testing different features in hundreds of business locations to better understand the needs of businesses and the complexities of commercial audio, we’re proud to deliver a simple solution that was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of this audience.”

Sonos says the service is delivering a powerful SaaS offering for businesses alongside its hardware. Typical audio solutions for businesses require a complex set of products and tools, but now businesses can streamline their sound with Sonos Pro.

“Music is the foundation for creating ambiance and keeping customers coming back for more,” said Audra Kinsley, VP and GM of Sonos Professional. “Sonos Pro was designed to make it easy for brands to reinforce their vision and lifestyle through sound, with tools to curate content and create distinct sound experiences that resonate with customers.”

“With the new IP300UHD and IP350UHD, integrators now have a genuinely cost-effective solution to deliver 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 over a 1Gbps network,” says Phil Davis, Managing Director of Blustream EMEA. “With market leading visual performance and unrivalled reliability this is the final piece of the puzzle for video over IP in a residential environment. “Delivering 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 over a 1Gb network

has been the holy grail for our industry for the last few years and it’s great that Blustream is driving these new standards in the market.” Shipping now, the Blustream IP300UHD series Video over IP platform allows virtually latency free (1 frame) distribution of HDMI 2.0 video over a 1Gb managed network. The IP300UHD-TX transmitter is a 4K HDCP 2.2 HDMI transmitter that uses visually lossless compression technology to deliver 18Gbps HDMI, audio, bi-directional IR, RS-

232, and USB/KVM up to lengths of 100m over standard copper network architecture, or greater distances using the built-in fiber SFP network interface. The IP300UHD-RX receiver also features second RJ45 LAN port for daisy-chaining the HDMI signal onto further IP300UHD-RX units. With a full 18Gbps HDMI scaling chipset on board, the HDMI output can be adjusted to lower resolutions where legacy displays are required in the same system as full 4K.

Shipping in June, the Dante-enabled IP350UHD-TX and IP350UHD-RX can support both 4K60 4:4:4 video and Dante audio distribution on a single network. A second RJ45 connection allows for the Dante audio network interface to be segregated from the video over IP network whenever required.

Aiden Jones, Technical Director at Blustream UK, explains where the IP300UHD platform fits in the broader range of Blustream video over IP solutions, “Our installation partners now have the ultimate flexibility with regards to resolution support and system size. Integrators now have the full spectrum of options, from the essential 1080P HD performance of the IP50HD through to the uncompromised 4K 18Gbps over a 10Gb network performance of the IP500UHD SDVoE transceiver. Aiden adds, “All Blustream video over IP products can be powered via PoE from the network switch, or locally, should the switch not support PoE. With endless configuration options available, the flexibility of Blustream makes the new IP300UHD platform ideal for several installation environments”.

ERA DEFINING?

Sonos brings spatial audio and Dolby Atmos to its latest speaker, adding further flexibility to the Sonos ecosystem. But how does it perform? Our trusty trade reviewer, Richard Stevenson, takes a listen.

The Era 300 join’s Sonos’ third generation of connected speakers, bringing with it multidriver immersive audio including Dolby Atmos, voice controlled smart-speaker functionality and a raft of Sonos system-specific integration features. Yet outside of a Sonos ecosystem, the Era 300 is hobbled by design to keep things in the family, limiting its integration options for larger projects.

Supplied in a neat card box with built-in slideclips, the Era 300 exudes an ‘Appleness’ of design from packing upwards that few other brands can touch. That extends to the unique shape, solid build quality, responsive touch control and slick app. Form follows function and a quick look at the exploded animation on Sonos’s website reveals a six driver array. This is configured as tweeter and woofer either side, plus a tweeter each for firing upwards for overhead and spatial effects and forward for vocals and dialogue – each with its own Class D amp.

Alexa integration comes courtesy of a farfield mic that has a physical on-off switch on the back, but there is no Google Assistant or Chromecast support.

A compact overall size makes it easy to place on a table top or an optional Sonos stand, whichgiven its potential use scenarios - is well conceived. You can set up the Era 300 as a standalone speaker, leveraging its multi-channel/multi-driver array to create stereo to surround sound audio, pair them as left/right main stereo speakers or even use them as rear channels to accompany the Sonos Arc Soundbar.

While using two Era 300s as rear speakers may seem a little over-kill when more compact and lower cost alternatives in the Sonos range (Era 100 or One SL) can do the job, it’s an excellent trade up. The added power and multidirection speaker array of the Era 300 make it a big and easily demonstrable, sonic upgrade for relatively little outlay over the other choices.

Add a Sonos sub or maybe two and you could create a fully amplified, 7.2.4 system without a single speaker cable to be seen. Sonos’ neat stands and wall bracket options for the Era 300 make that even easier.

Alongside WiFi 6 and Bluetooth, connectivity is limited to Sonos’ signature right-angle moulded fig-8 power lead and a single USB-C port. There is no HDMI so no eARC, ensuring if you want to bolster a TV’s sound with Sonos, you will need one of its dedicated soundbars.

The USB-C port can, with a suitable optional Sonos adapter, offer a single analogue connection or hardwired Ethernet. Don’t get too excited by the latter however, as native immersive audio like Dolby Atmos music can only be streamed over Wi-Fi and even then only through Apple or Amazon music services (not Tidal) and even then only via the Sonos app not directly via AirPlay or Bluetooth. That is a niggly extra layer of faff for those looking specifically

for spatial audio tracks. Nor is there any open IP control driver/protocol over the Ethernet connection as Sonos IP control requires knowledge and licensing of the Sonos API.

The Sonos app has something of a marmite reputation but I personally like 99% of its UI and setting up the Era 300, particularly if you are simply adding it to an existing Sonos set-up, is very slick.

Aforementioned foibles aside, retailing at £449 in either black or white, the Era 300 is a sonic bargain. The scale of the sound and bass punch is frankly astounding from such a small relatively inexpensive box of tricks, and this is backed up with enviable clarity and brilliant spatial imaging. As a single speaker placed symmetrically in a room to maximise driver directivity, it creates a wholly convincing spatial effect with even stereo music and is quite the eye opener with true spatial audio. Apple Music is probably the easiest way get dedicated spatial audio recorded tracks, and limited Apple Music functionality within the Sonos app aside, it delivers great results and even glosses over some of the distinctly dodgy spatial mixes.

ON ME ED…

Ed Sheeran’s mellow Eyes Closed leverages the space and clarity in the track’s mix, with the vocal remaining front soundstage and rhythm filling the room. The bass line kicks in when Ed hits the chorus and it is a thoroughly musical and engaging experience. The spatial remaster of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is not the best

but the Era 300 manages to make it sound better integrated than a discrete 7.1.4 system and delivers Elton’s unmistakable timbre and clarity. We are yet to test a stereo pair of Era 300’s but the omens for an impressive stereo system are good.

For installers, Sonos always represents either an ecosystem with annoying compromises or a slick, easy to install, robust and relatively low cost multi-room audio and AV solution. The Era 300 fits perfectly into that mould, yet elevates the performance considerably along the way. As a stand alone speaker, it’s a very neat plug-and-play speaker

for secondary rooms, assuming the home is running Sonos architecture for multiroom.

Perhaps even more appealing is for AV installs. A pair of Era 300s would be the ideal partner to an Arc and Sub, creating a very cost effective wireless 7.1.4 system – with only some mains cables to hide. That could be bolted into a TV room with minimal décor disruption and eliminates the need, or the end-user complexity, of a high-tech AVR.

Sonos is never going to be the panacea for true high performance AV, but if the customer’s budget is tight, the Era 300 adds real flexibility and exceptional sound to the Sonos eco system.

NEW STATUS

Celebrating a milestone.

Following the announcement of Together For Cinema (TFC) being granted Community Interest Company (CIC) status, new directors Melanie Malcolm from Bespoke Home Cinemas, Cadaema Consulting Services’ David Parrett, and Chris Pinder from HDANYWHERE and OneAV, join Founder Ian Morrish, sharing their experiences and their vision for taking TFC’s new status forward.

“I feel like I’ve been involved in TFC for years,” says Melanie. “I was aware of Ian’s work for a long time. I sit on the CEDIA board and was there when we gave him a recognition award. That was when TFC really came to my attention.”

Watching from the side-lines, Melanie loved the work Ian was doing and knew Bespoke Home Cinemas wanted to be involved in a hospice installation, which then led to her becoming part of the TFC steering committee.

Working in advisory capacity, along with four or five other like-minded industry professionals, Melanie brought her knowledge as a cinema installation company along with her event management and marketing experience within the charity sector to the fore to help behind the scenes. It was shortly afterwards that Bespoke Home Cinemas completed its first TFC hospice

installation. “I worked on the project myself and it was such an emotional experience, I was totally hooked,” she recalls.

When conversations began about whether TFC should become a charity or a CIC, Melanie was a constant support to Ian, helping with the decision-making process. “When Ian asked me to be a director, it was a nice transition. I was already in the thick of it, so it was easy to accept. It’s a great fit for me personally.”

David Parrett’s background as a sales director in facilities management, and now as a consultant, brings a different perspective to TFC. His role is, he says, to provide ‘checks and balances’.

His motivation for becoming involved stems from his university training as a teacher, and then his role with Westminster Council providing transport for children with special needs.

“Despite my change in career, I’ve always had an interest in education, children with special needs, and disadvantaged children,” says David. “I’ve also become a school governor and am chair of governors at a local primary school with a portfolio specialty there for children with special needs. Ian is a good friend of mine - our children go to school together - so we have a personal link as well. I’d started my

own business three years ago and was keen to find an altruistic, extracurricular endeavour. Joining Ian at TFC became a very obvious next step for me.”

The fourth addition to the team, Chris Pinder, is well-known for supplying HDMI cables and multi-room AV products to the custom install industry - but has also gained a loyal following for his TFC fund raising endeavours.

“We were supplying cables every now and then to TFC’s cinema rooms,” he recalls. “Our overall contribution for each project was tiny. I was frustrated that we couldn’t do more than just donate the cable and I always had in the back of my mind a hope that one day we would be able to do more.”

Then lockdown happened. Chris’s beloved football was cancelled, but he still wanted to get out the house. “I started doing the odd jog around the block, just to keep sane really and try and keep the beer belly at bay,” he laughs. “As things began to open up again, I happened to be in the office one day and I saw a social post from Ian about TFC’s latest project. I think it was Derian House, and at that moment everything just sort of clicked and I thought right, I’m going to do something to raise money for TFC.”

Huge industry support has allowed TFC to evolve and grow 18 MAY 2023 ESSENTIAL TOGETHER FOR CINEMA /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

Searching for out-of-the-ordinary challenges that would really make people take notice, he googled ‘hardest race in the world’ and came across the Marathon Des Sables (French for Marathon of the Sands), a gruelling six-

day, 251km ultramarathon held every year in southern Morocco’s Sahara Desert. Despite not having even run a half marathon, he impulsively signed up on the spot. His journey from zero to the finishing line is the stuff of legend (you can

read more about it in his blog) and he raised a staggering £46,000.

Chris wanted to become a director as he feels forever emotionally attached to TFC because of how intense the Marathon Des Sables experience was, and also because of the incredible level of support the industry has shown the cause.

“I’m hopeful that what I did will be copied by other people doing other crazy challenges, and will continue to help raise funds, as well as encourage the donation of more equipment,” he says. “For some projects, 80% of the equipment is already in place but they need but they need to buy a ‘this or a that’ so they’d be able to finish the project. I think we might be able to go from five a year to maybe eight or nine, even 10 a year with a little bit more help from myself and the other directors.”

With that aim in mind, TFC is pushing forward with its mission to grow and expand its plans and already has seven projects lined up for completion this year, with more in the pipeline for 2024.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we’re officially recognised as a not-for-profit organisation, and that Melanie, David and Chris are joining me as directors. Each of them brings different skills and knowledge, and their input is invaluable,” concludes Ian. “We’ve already achieved a lot, but having an expanded team that knows the industry, and has such passion to help us achieve even more, is truly heart-warming.” Together

DISPELLING FOUR MYTHS ABOUT CEDIA CERTIFICATION

Mandy Beckner, Vice President of Education and Training at CEDIA, explains.

The Cabling and Infrastructure Technician (CIT) and Integrated Systems Technician (IST) are core elements of CEDIA’s workforce development strategy. These ANSI/ISOaccredited certifications, supported by vetted training and preparation programmes and textbooks, get us in the door with parents, teachers and programme administrators. Inside our own industry, however, many integrators underestimate the value of CEDIA certification for their businesses.

My colleague, Paul Skelton, recently conducted some revealing market research. Nearly all the integrators he surveyed recognise that the industry needs strong certifications – but they aren’t personally willing to pursue certification. Where is this belief – that ‘certification is great, but not for me’ – coming from? Based on my conversation with Paul and integrators, Amanda Wildman, Mike Ranpura, and Pete Trauth at ISE, there are a lot of myths about certification that persist in the industry. If we’re going to attract the next generation of talent and seize the opportunities before us, we need to dispel those myths now.

MYTH #1 – IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER YOU’RE CERTIFIED

Certification carries a lot of weight with allied trades who have a strong tradition of certification, licensing and continuing education. Electricians, architects, and engineers recognise the meaning of ANSI/ISO accreditation, and are far more likely to seek to engage with partners who can verify their expertise to an accepted standard.

“Every day, I speak with architect associations, builder groups and government agencies. The conversations always follow the same path,” says Paul Skelton, Regional Development Consultant for CEDIA in Australia and New Zealand. “They’re excited about the industry, but they want to know how they can tell whether an integrator is qualified.”

CEDIA’s globally-accredited certifications are the answer to that question. When subcontracting to an allied trade, having multiple certified staff members gives you a crucial competitive edge. As part of the bigger picture, a critical mass of certified integrators will prove to allied trade groups, government

agencies and lawmakers that this industry holds itself to rigorous, defined standards.

MYTH #2 – YOU DON’T NEED CERTIFICATION IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE

Do you want the next generation of home technology professionals to value precision, expertise, and standards? Then lead by example.

Pete Trauth, CIT-SME, IST-SME, ESC-T, ESC-N, ESC-D, Owner of Nirvana Home Entertainment, once told me, “I can’t ask my staff to commit to certification if I don’t first commit to it.” As the banner of letters behind his name attests, he has committed fully – and found personal growth in the process.

Certification is a journey that doesn’t end with passing the test. CIT and IST holders must renew every three years by refreshing their knowledge with any new material that’s been added to the exam content outline. Maintaining a certification demonstrates your determination to stay on the industry’s leading edge.

“There’s a difference between ‘years in the industry’ and ‘experience,’” says Pete. “You can do the same things over and over again, but you don’t grow from that. Certification keeps you up to date. Keeping your learning going throughout your career is what builds real experience.”

MYTH #3 – YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO TRAIN FOR CERTIFICATION

Training your staff does not cost nearly as much time as not training your staff. You may arrive at a project with a clear plan and explicit instructions for inexperienced staff members, but things can change quickly on site. When the drawing doesn’t match the build, can your technicians make the right call?

“When a new person makes unsupervised decisions on a job site, a single mistake can cost a lot of money and time in rework,” says Amanda Wildman, ESC, CIT-SME, IST-SME, Owner of Trumedia and CEDIA Board Secretary. “CIT helps define what decisions a technician is qualified to make, and what decisions require approval or oversight from an ISE-certified staff member.”

Often, time spent in training is repaid with onsite effectiveness. “I have dedicated study days for my newest hire, preparing him to take the CIT,” says Mike Ranpura, CIT-SME, IST-

SME, ESC-T, ESC-N, Director of Smart Life AV. “The information that he learns on study days leads him to ask more interesting questions on site. In fact, he often exhibits more knowledge than the senior subcontractors he works alongside.”

MYTH # 4 – CEDIA CERTIFICATIONS ARE US-CENTRIC

“A few years ago, it probably would have been me saying that,” says Mike. The CIT and IST, however, are different. Making these new certifications reflective of the global CEDIA community was a core goal of CEDIA’s certification volunteers.

“We worked extremely hard to make sure these certifications would be relevant in all the regions where there is significant CEDIA activity,” Mike affirms.

The CIT and IST do not reinforce a North American lens. They are written to allow home technology professionals worldwide to demonstrate their expertise. As a result, preparing for certification will empower CEDIA members to better communicate with their peers globally.

“These certifications will expand your technical vocabulary, so that when you come to CEDIA Expo, ISE, or other events outside your home country, you can share ideas,” says Amanda. “They are giving us, as integrators and as CEDIA, a common language to work from.”

BE A CATALYST FOR CHANGE

Certification is the future of the industry and your business. If you want an edge against competitors in your marketplace – especially licensed professionals like security integrators and electrical contractors – you need to get certified. If the industry wants recognition as a profession, its members must demonstrate their commitment to professional accreditation and standards.

As Paul puts it, “If we want to be taken seriously as an industry, we need to take ourselves seriously first.” CEDIA and its certification volunteers have built rigorous certifications for the industry; building the community of certified integrators is up to you. Visit cedia.net/certification to get started.

DÉCORCINEMA A NEW ERA IN PROJECT ACQUISITION AND EXECUTION

Since

Where did the inspiration and motivation come from for DécorCinema?

Mike Beatty, Pulse Cinemas MD, explains, “For many years the luxury AV and home cinema industry has struggled with the best way to create a larger market by increasing the awareness and appeal of what we can deliver. It’s a competitive world out there with many luxury items and experiences competing with home cinema, often with a higher profile built over years and with deeper pockets to market their sector. To a great extent the industry has relied on word of mouth and the marketing skills and contacts of installers to build the sector, this has worked well up to a point. However, at Pulse Cinemas we strongly feel that dealers deserve more from manufacturers and distributors and so we created the DécorCinema concept to generate awareness and work directly with the consumer looking for the best in performance and design.

“Right now you can visit the new dedicated website at (decorcinema.co.uk) to a get a feel of how we are targeting consumers, but for more details on how this revolutionary concept will benefit your business, read on and begin a new journey with us into the fantastic world of DécorCinema.”

What exactly is DécorCinema?

DécorCinema is a new consumer facing platform designed to create awareness for and excitement around the world of integrated home cinemas. Bolstered by its own website and further marketing initiatives, the idea is to spread the word on how cinemas can be a fantastic design addition to any home and be completely integrated with an existing living space or installed in an under-used space for a dedicated cinema approach. Pulse Cinemas will leverage our own expertise, contacts and worldclass brands to build a profile for DécorCinema. The concept also includes exclusive access to one of the UK’s top interior design teams who are fully versed in how to merge fantastic aesthetics with home cinema performance. How the cinema will look is just as important to end users as the performance and DécorCinema will ensure that it does, either in an existing living space or by creating a strong design concept for a dedicated home cinema room. Consumers will recognise that DécorCinema represents a complete package that they can purchase and then relax knowing they are going to get everything they wanted from their dream home cinema and their authorised DécorCinema dealer.

we launched our DécorCinema concept (decorcinema.co.uk) we have had many dealers asking specific questions on how this new customer facing initiative will work and how it will benefit dealers. Here we present a full account of how this exciting new way to market highperformance fully integrated home cinemas to end users will work.
ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com 22 MAY 2023

What are the DécorCinema Dealer Partners benefits?

For the customer, owning a DécorCinema will carry credibility and an assurance that they will be getting the ultimate sound and picture, combined with the best aesthetics driving sales and awareness.

The benefits of becoming a Dealer Partner will include use of all Pulse Cinemas facilities for partner events, use of a growing library of images for promotional activities, site/ project photography and video testimonials of completed projects. Dealer Partners will be able to carry the authorised DécorCinema logo within their own marketing.

Regular awards will be given to the best completed projects, creating more awareness and credibility within the concept for those involved.

Dealers will also be supported in entering other award initiatives such as the CEDIA Awards. DécorCinema will become a CEDIA member and Exclusively partner creating more awareness for the brand.

Which brands are included in the DécorCinema concept?

We have a clear idea of the brands that fit within the concept; we will be approaching these companies to communicate our goals and vision, requesting that they provide an agreed amount towards marketing the initiative to end users. It’s important to clarify that all contributions received from partners and distributed brands will be used to market DécorCinema to a targeted audience.

Funds raised through Dealer Partner and manufacturer fees can be used to develop and support future DécorCinema spaces in businesses such as Minotti London around the UK, if these aren’t charged at cost and it is agreed that the installation should be completed FOC.

Other complimentary brands may be brought into the DécorCinema platform, but will only ever include products that guarantee the sound and picture performance criteria are met. Pulse Cinemas may recommend certain products for lighting control etc, but these will not be included in the list to achieve

DécorCinema status. Projects created from the DécorCinema website or other marketing avenues will be allocated on a customer location basis with the nearest authorised dealers gaining the work.

Where can customers and installers see DécorCinema demonstrated?

DécorCinema demonstration spaces will include the Reference Cinema, Reception Area and Media Room at Pulse HQ as well as The Minotti London showroom. More spaces will be added as the concept grows and dealers will also have the chance to create their own with support from Pulse Cinemas and associated brands.

What is the criteria for becoming DécorCinema qualified?

The dealer will need to have already shown a willingness to support the supporting DécorCinema brands and the dealer will also need to complete the DécorCinema training programme. Additional training will be offered to partners to ensure accreditations and up to date knowledge is kept at industry leading levels.

In the first year of membership, up to two team members from any installer can attend the new one-day DécorCinema Dealer Partner training course.

The course will cover all aspects of cinema installation and execution designed around the DécorCinema framework. The training will take place regularly at the excellent training facilities of Pulse Cinemas HQ. It will be only then that authorised status is given. At this point, the dealer will be given a portal page on the website; this can be populated with previously completed projects, certifications, awards and time in the industry etc. The better the portal page, the more chance the dealer will be recognised by the client.

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS MAY 2023 23 essentialinstall.com @Install_mag /Essentialinstall

The training course will include;

• Product knowledge assessment

• Technical knowledge of all partner brands

• Cinema design training

• Acoustic training

• Social media masterclass

As always at Pulse Cinemas, fantastic food and drink will be provided to ensure every attendee stays fresh and focused. Any additional members of any company can join the training at a cost of £200 plus VAT per person.

On successful completion of the training, each individual and Dealer Partner will be awarded DécorCinema authorised status.

A Dealer Partner annual subscription fee of £500 plus VAT will apply. All proceeds from the fees will be used in the comprehensive marketing around the concept.

All Dealer Partners will have to adhere to certain financial criteria, so Pulse Cinemas can guarantee the client’s project is completed with high standards met. We are investigating a possible agreement where deposits and payments are protected, until project is completed. More details to follow.

All partner subscriptions will need to be renewed at the end of every year. Dealer Partners can be removed from the group at any time for not adhering to the rules of the group.

How many DécorCinema Dealer Partners Will There be?

There will be no limit to the quantity of authorised Dealer Partners in the UK. Providing the criteria is met, any dealer can join the group and reap the benefits. Our aim is to grow

the concept so that dealers up and down the country can tap into the demand created around the DécorCinema concept. Having said that the high-quality approach needed to qualify as a Dealer Partner will naturally limit the number of those in the scheme to a degree.

Can installers create their own DécorCinema demonstration space?

Yes, Dealer Partners can decide to install their own DécorCinema demonstration space in their own premises, creating their own destination that can tap into the awareness created around the concept. Product for these projects will be sold at demonstration pricing and must be kept for a minimum of one year.

How are DécorCinemas verified?

Any completed DécorCinema will be signed off and calibrated by a Pulse Cinemas representative and only then given DécorCinema status. Following this a full marketing support programme will be accessed which will include presence on the dedicated website and other consumer facing platforms.

THE AMBITION

Mike sums up, “We continue to have the highest ambition for where our sector can go next and the DécorCinema platform is one way of how we plan to get there. We have a clear vision for the incredible things we can achieve if we pool our resources. Focusing on incorporating cinema into existing living spaces continues to be relatively unrecognised when compared to other desirable items. Our aim is to create a desirable cinema brand that high net worth consumers can recognise. We envisage us ultimately growing the market through targeted marketing and exposure; to ensure the finest UK installers are recognised for delivering deserving clients the very highest cinema performance within beautiful living spaces.”

REMOVING THE BARRIERS TO WHOLE-HOME WIRELESS AUDIO

is on the rise.

With the rise of smart homes and the popularity of multi-room audio systems, many homeowners are opting for wireless solutions that offer seamless and enjoyable listening experiences from every room in their home without the hassle of traditional wiring. The best technologies can go a step further, allowing users to transmit TV audio throughout the home, or group components into an immersive home theatre system. Wireless whole-home audio has come a long way and is now more affordable and accessible than ever.

Moreover, developments in whole-home audio mean homes don’t need to be tethered to one brand’s technology. This freedom of choice gives installers and end users more flexibility and means any budget requirements can be met without compromising on audio quality. As a result, we’ll see more purchasing decisions based on sound quality and design instead of feeling the need to commit to buying everything from team Apple, Google or Amazon.

A wireless audio solution connecting all the speakers in one’s home is a top priority to a lot of consumers. Our recent research found that just over half (53%) of American adults and over a third (36%) of Brits agreed that having an interconnected wireless audio solution is important. Breaking down the UK data more, the demand differs greatly by age, with 52% of Millenials and 51% of Gen Z saying that having an interconnected wireless audio solution in the home is important, compared to only 35% of Gen X and 20% of Boomers.

When it comes to TV viewing, sound quality matters too. Among UK TV owners, 93% say sound quality is important to their viewing experience (47% say extremely important). Additionally, UK viewers ranked sound quality higher than display or screen size, resolution, or smart TV capabilities when it comes to their viewing experience. In the UK, a quarter (26%) who watch TV very often own a soundbar too, which leaves a big uptapped market.

Demands for high-quality consumer electronics that enhance user’s personal and professional lives will only continue. Whether its for an immersive at-home cinema experience

or the ultimate house party, or continued acceleration of trends such as the creator economy, hybrid working and immersive gaming, consumer electronics that are easy to use, high performing and affordable won’t go out of fashion.

Choice is crucial factor so that systems can be tailored to an individual’s needs. Ensure you get to the bottom of a buyer’s underlying needs and desires.

Some audio systems are designed specifically for music, while others are better suited for movies and other audio-visual content. TVs, soundbars, amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers aren’t necessarily compatible with every whole-home audio standard - so it’s crucial to assist for the ultimate set-up. The number of rooms, devices and useability are all important factors too, depending on who will be using the equipment, where in the property and when.

Avoid providing technology that doesn’t offer the ability to control audio devices from a smartphone or tablet too – intuitive apps and voice-enabled control for easy navigation and use are must-haves. Transitioning from home to the office and when people are on-the-go with familiar experiences will only lead to more sales too.

To future-proof offerings, installers need to ensure they have a raft of audio products that work with everything, with features that create bridges of compatibility between products and brands, not islands.

Thankfully new technologies, like DTS Play-Fi, are eliminating the need to be constrained by proprietary standards – giving installers and end users the power to mix and match interoperable products from a variety of different brands and across a broad range of TVs, speakers and other products.

This is great news as Europe has seen a surge in home entertainment purchasing over the last few years. In the UK alone, overall sales across digital media, including music, games and streaming services, have increased 6.9% since 2021 (Digital Entertainment and Retail Association’s annual report).

By removing the shackles of brand lock-in, AV specialists can help consumers to create their perfect audio experience, whether that’s a budget multi-room speaker setup to listen to music while cleaning, or a no-expense-spared surround sound experience for a home cinema or immersive gaming room. You can take the pain away from consumers who have to spend ages researching whether the technology back bone they are building upon supports the use cases and devices they want to live with now and in the future.

In 2023, we’ll see more purchasing decisions for audio devices based on sound quality and design – with more options for consumers to choose products from a wide selection of brands and price points. The choices in the wireless world will start looking a lot more like the choices available in the wired world. And that’s a good thing.

HARKNESS ON DARKNESS

Outdoor lighting has a huge impact on buildings and their use. From highlighting building and landscape design to enhancing safety and security, it is an essential element of any development.

Often though, undertaking an external lighting installation can seem like a challenge. With a choice of features and spaces to illuminate, not to mention a wide variety of products and technologies available, deciding what to incorporate can be a headache for installers.

As a lighting designer, when approaching any space I’d advise to start by considering the area in its entirety alongside the project’s specific requirements. Is the brief purely design-led or is safety and security a key focus? Whatever the aim, this step should help you to fully understand the scope of the project.

The next step is to consider individually the different spaces that require illumination. Of course, the design elements will differ according to the requirements of each individual project, but commonly in commercial installations this will encompass car parks, pathways, pavements, façade’s and entrance ways, whilst in domestic projects gardens, driveways, patios and porches will be the main focus.

For patios, facades, porches and entrance areas wall mounted lights are an ideal choice. Available in a huge range of traditional and contemporary designs, they are not only practical lighting options but have decorative appeal too.

For pedestrian walkways, paths, borders, driveways or other access areas, bollard lights are a stylish and practical way to illuminate the space and improve safety after dark. Typically 2-4ft high, bollards improve visibility by projecting light horizontally and/or downward.

In bigger, security conscious spaces such as car parks or larger driveways, floodlighting is a great option, providing high levels of illumination to light the space.

Visual design requirements should also be considered at this stage and will help to shape product specification.

Up-lighting for example gives a very dramatic lighting effect and is ideal for highlighting features such as buildings and fountains, or for making trees and foliage stand out. It can be achieved very easily with spike fittings or up-lights. Similarily, wall lights can be installed to down-light areas from above, including doorways and patios.

UP-TO-DATE

In today’s world, effective outdoor lighting schemes must go beyond simply providing illumination. Light pollution and energy efficiency are also major considerations and will impact the overall design and specification process.

Unfortunately, much of the outdoor lighting we use at night is too bright, ineffectively shielded and badly directed - which is causing the many issues associated with light pollution. But by following simple best practice design principles, these problems can be easily prevented. Opt for products that reduce glare and ensure that any lighting installed meets the objectives of being useful, targeted, low level, easy to control and of the right colour.

As energy prices remain at an all-time high, unsurprisingly the number one objective of most new lighting projects is energy efficiency. This is where the benefits of smart technology come into play.

Enabling numerous luminaires to be linked together, automated and controlled, smart lighting systems will deliver the most controllable and energy efficient solution available and can help to reduce lighting energy use by up to two thirds.

Time of use, duration, output levels and colour temperatures can all be pre-set and different scenes, groups and schedules created.

One important caveat of installing smart lighting outdoors is to check the Wi-Fi coverage first. If there is not sufficient coverage then a Wi-Fi extender can be used.

Another huge benefit of smart technology is that it is measurable. Recent advances in equipment mean that many smart lighting solutions now come with dashboard controls which enable building occupants or facilities managers to accurately view lighting-based energy consumption data and identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary use.

If smart lighting isn’t a realistic solution, products with either photocell or motion sensor detection technology will also help to optimise energy use. Outdoor products such as floodlighting, street lighting and bollard products are often fitted with this technology, enabling the luminaires to turn on as either daylight reduces or motion is detected, and off as morning light brightens or stillness resumes.

Whilst it is clear that there are many factors to consider when approaching outdoor lighting projects, an effective installation can be achieved with relative ease. Investing time into planning, design and specification will ensure that every required objective is met.

When it comes to outdoor lighting, it can be difficult to know how to approach a new project. Aside from aesthetic and design considerations there is a plethora of products and technologies to navigate, alongside energy efficiency and light pollution concerns.

PREMIUM PRODUCT

Alongside ease of installation, it’s clear that automating the shading within a client’s property is a good, profitable business for integrators so long as the system is also easy to maintain.

At QMotion, we offer a 20-year lifetime warranty on the control and power provided by our ultra-quiet Cat6 wired motors – that’s longer than anyone else in the industry and demonstrates just how confident we are in the reliability and performance of the products that we supply.

We also give installers the reassurance of UK fabrication and technical support, eliminating any issues with international manufacturing, shipping delays and giving installers a direct line to experts who can help them on a project when they need it.

Not only that, but our unique manual override system means that clients can accidentally pull the blind to move it without damaging the mechanism and causing unnecessary breakage and call-outs.

When it comes to meeting the aesthetic expectations of the client, then, again automated blinds tick many of the right boxes for clients. We offer a wide range of different fabrics for the client to choose from and can provide options for Roman Blinds as well as Roller Blind installation.

For a clean, contemporary interior finish, we also have Blind Pocket, an affordable blind concealment solution which can be used to hide the roller within the ceiling and ensure only the fabric is visible when the blind is fully lowered.

It’s not just what you see with automated blinds that matters, it’s also what you hear, or rather don’t hear from the mechanism that’s important for clients. Our patented spring-counterbalancing system keeps battery power consumption to a minimum and delivers near silent operation in every application.

This is another fundamental part of making sure that the client has a great experience from the work that integrators do – it’s what we care about and so do you.

THREE OPPORTUNITIES TO STAY COMPETITIVE WITH LIGHTING CONTROL

Our buildings are under pressure to be many things at once - sustainable and energy-efficient, comfortable and stylish, welcoming and functional. To answer all these needs at once, the smart building technology sector is poised to be more integrated and intelligent than ever before. With advancements in smart technology and the proliferation of the internet of things (IoT), lighting control systems are evolving to include features such as wireless communication, overthe-air-updates, and data analytics. With such rapid technological advancement happening across many areas, it can be difficult to keep track, and to separate the ‘hype’ from the industry-changing features that are here to stay, and that you as an installer need to understand.

SHINING A LIGHT ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY

If it isn’t already, understanding energy efficiency opportunities is a must-have in the modern installer’s toolkit. The urgent need

for businesses to deliver on sustainability goals is driving commercial investment into energy saving and efficiency measures, and across both the residential and commercial sectors, skyrocketing energy bills are further driving energy-efficient building-tech up the wish list.

Lighting is a wise place to start for those looking to save on energy costs. The Climate Group estimates that lighting contributes to approximately 5% of worldwide CO2 emissions, which is surprising given the several easy ways to incorporate energy savings along with an improved user/occupant lighting experience. Indeed, preserving energy does not require us to give up advantages like comfort, productivity and interior design.

For example, in commercial office projects where lighting usage can be quite extensive, incorporating occupancy sensors and daylight sensors can help regulate the lighting and save

energy. By using occupancy sensors, lighting can be turned off in unoccupied areas, and with daylight sensors, artificial lighting can be dimmed or turned off in areas where natural light is sufficient. These sensors can be easily integrated into lighting control systems, providing a seamless user experience while also saving energy and reducing costs. Additionally, the use of LED lighting technology can also significantly reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs over time.

Smart lighting control can offer significant energy efficiency gains, in a variety of ways including with occupancy sensing which detects when a room is occupied and adjusts the lighting accordingly, as well as daylight harvesting which adjusts artificial lighting based on the amount of natural light in a space. Furthermore, dimming and scheduling can prevent unnecessary energy consumption, and remote control reduces energy waste.

36 MAY 2023 ESSENTIAL LIGHT AND LIGHTING CONTROL /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS, ONE INTEGRATION AT A TIME

The best lighting control doesn’t work in isolation. Lighting is one crucial part of a bigger puzzle – ambience is the result of the right temperature, sights, sounds and many other elements. So, understanding how to achieve successful integration with other systems or building services is key for any installer in 2023.

Innovative integration of lighting and shading solutions with audiovisual and IT systems has the potential to transform building management, streamlining user experience and optimising energy efficiency – especially in commercial spaces like offices and schools or universities. In these settings, optimal system integration empowers users to easily control lighting, shading and audiovisual equipment from a single interface.

The ability to integrate systems also plays into the energy efficiency objective – allowing building managers to monitor overall facility energy usage and optimise individual applications from a central location. This centralised collection of building data ultimately empowers building managers and owners to make more wellinformed decisions to support sustainability goals and enhance occupant comfort.

THE HYBRID WORK OPPORTUNITY FOR INSTALLERS

Hybrid and remote work are no longer a niceto-have, it’s a given for many employees. Whilst it has boosted productivity and flexibility, it has also brought forth new difficulties, notably regarding online meetings. Understanding

these challenges will be a key differentiator for installers when speaking with potential commercial clients – expanding your value from an installer to an AV advisor.

The key challenge to understand is this: the quality of the meeting experience has grown more crucial as many businesses rely on virtual and physical meeting venues. In addition to being annoying, poor audio and video quality can have an adverse effect on productivity – so AV has a vital role to play in the modern workspace.

To address this issue, there has been a surge in demand for meeting room technology that focuses on creating a high-quality online meeting experience. Leading companies like LG, Microsoft and Logitech have recognised the need for clear audio and video in online meetings and have developed solutions that address these challenges. These solutions include high-quality microphones and cameras that deliver clear and crisp audio and video, as well as software that improves the overall meeting experience.

USING THE RIGHT SOLUTION

With the latest update in Part L2 of the building regulations, it is now required to use systems fit for purpose so that the new requirements can be met. The days of standalone devices are numbered. We are now in the era of lighting control systems, where the different energy saving strategies can be layered dynamically on top of each other to maximise energy savings. Furthermore, with modern integration capabilities it is possible to reduce installation costs by having systems that can calculate energy usage and share it with the building management systems, and thus avoid the need to install power meters in each lighting circuit.

In today’s world, keeping up with the latest technology can be daunting, especially when it comes to smart lighting control. As an installer, it’s crucial to educate yourself on the latest trends in energy-efficient solutions to provide your clients with the most effective and costsaving options. By integrating smart lighting control with other applications, investing in energy-efficient strategies and focusing on hybrid working, you can set yourself up for success in this growing industry. With the benefits of reduced energy consumption, improved comfort and productivity and greater sustainability, smart lighting control is an essential addition to any modern workspace. By staying informed and adapting to changing industry trends, you can ensure that your business thrives in the years to come.

Domestic and commercial spaces are now making more demands on lighting than ever

CREATING A BRIGHTER FUTURE

It is estimated that we spend around 90% of our time indoors, so the environment we create in our homes is an important factor for our wellbeing - as well as how energy efficient we are. Lighting is part of the core infrastructure within a home and one of the first elements installers and specifiers should consider when installing smart technology. The need for sustainable and adaptable lighting and lighting control are two key factors driving current and future trends.

The topic of sustainability has become intertwined in many elements of our lives, with many of us making changes to how to live and control our own homes.

The adoption of LED lamps and lighting control features like the ‘whole house off’ function, or geo-fencing via smartphones demonstrates how the industry has progressed to be more energy efficient. However, sustainability, not just at the point of use, but across the entire life span of

the products is emerging as a key consideration for manufacturers, installers, and specifiers.

Lighting fixture manufacturers are focusing on modular products designed to be easily assembled, disassembled and reconfigured. In turn, the products open more opportunities to be repaired, reused and/or repurposed rather than being thrown away.

Mirroring this progress, lighting control has an increased focus on products designed for longevity. For example, at Rako, we focus on highquality products that will last a significant portion of the house’s lifespan. Our products can be repaired and we offer repair services to support this. We also offer backward compatibility on our products meaning adding new components including dimmers and keypads, both wired and wireless, to existing systems is possible without rendering older products obsolete. Thereby extending the lifespan of existing systems and

components and reducing the electronic waste that comes from discarding outdated products.

The movements in sustainable innovations are not slowing down any time soon. It is likely we will be seeing further innovations, considering new angles to making the lifecycle of lighting systems more sustainable.

As we look at making lighting systems better for the environment, we are also making lighting systems more attuned to the end users. Now the lighter evenings of spring have come, discussions on the impact of light on our bodies are leading the lighting industry. The health benefits of light such as heightened concentration, better sleep and improving our general wellbeing have piqued the interest of end users. Since the introduction of LEDs, we are starting to see practical solutions to the idea of adapting lighting to people’s natural, circadian rhythms and it has become a key consideration for lighting designers too.

The current trends in lighting and lighting control are purpose-driven, smart technology has the capability to provide healthy, sustainable and efficient homes as Peter Broome, Director at UK smart lighting controls manufacturer, Rako, explains.

HUMAN-CENTRIC

There is an emergence of circadian focused lighting products with features like tuneable colour temperature and control solutions that can build rhythms into lighting designs. At Rako we have incorporated these capabilities into our refreshed app. The Rako app allows quick and easy control of colour temperature and light intensity with touch sliders, enabling occupants to adjust lighting to suit their needs for a particular task or to set scenes by linking lighting with individual circadian rhythms.

We have understood the effect of lighting on wellbeing for some time, however it is only with these recent innovations we have had the ability to act. We are at the beginning stages with these types of smart technologies with exciting prospects on what we can do to better tailor our products holistically to the lives of consumers.

As well as lighting that works in combination with our bodies, consumers want products that are personalised and customisable. They require lighting and lighting control to be a seamless part of the interior design within a home. Keypad flexibility remains a poignant trend in the industry, offering functionality and simplicity in operation as well as lots of choice in control options and a range of finishes which suit the unique style of every customer and their decor.

Homeowners want to keep the aesthetics of their keypads tied together with other features like electrical sockets, door handles and hinges. Again, here at Rako, we’ve invested a lot of time to ensure installers and specifiers have a wide range of solutions to offer, allowing them to cater to these demands. We have also recently introduced our EOS portrait keypads, giving orientation options and greater choice for designers to use in any space.

Customisable and personalised keypads is a trend that is here to stay, it is such a key offering to integrators, designers and end user alike. For us, moving with these changes, keeping on top of popular styles is going to be key to future product design.

Lighting is and will always be a fundamental part of a home. With the current trends in lighting and lighting control we are only just starting to push the boundaries, to make this core infrastructure an elevated tool to improve the lives of consumers. It is important that we communicate these advancements to end users, so they can utilise the benefits this smart technology can bring to their homes, their wellbeing and the planet.

VAN HAVEN?

Is your van fleet safe from prying eyes, and even worse, results of not being fully projected?

EI asked for some advice from security experts, Yale. Matt Claydon, Head of Trade at Yale UK, responds.

Most people who own a commercial van would agree that they are one of their most valuable commodities. Not only do they allow you to get from one job to another, but they also carry your much-needed tools and equipment.

Given their value, it’s no surprise then that van theft is becoming a worryingly common

theme. In fact, according to the Office for National Statistics, van theft is on the rise, with more than 12,000 reported incidents in 2020, a 5% rise on the previous year.

Additionally, a study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles revealed that the average value of equipment stored per van stands at

£2,500, which means UK tradespeople are footing a £4.4 billion bill for replacement tools every year. These statistics further highlight the need to take precautions to protect your van from opportunistic thieves.

INSTALL AN ALARM SYSTEM

Vehicle alarms can be effective in preventing vehicle theft, however the quality and type of alarm system installed can have a significant impact on its effectiveness. For example, some alarm systems may be easily bypassed or disabled by experienced thieves, while others may provide more comprehensive protection.

The most essential features of an alarm system are those that detect attempted theft or tampering and alert others to the situation. The more comprehensive the system, the better the protection it can offer against theft. Ensure the alarm you install includes some of these key features; shock sensors, motion sensors, remote control so you can arm and disarm the alarm wherever you are, a loud and persistent siren, an immobiliser and GPS tracking to track the van’s location if needed.

USE A VAN LOCK

We would recommend investing in a high security van lock to not only protect your van and its contents, but also to deter would-be criminals. The security market has been responding to current threats surrounding vehicle security, and as a result maximum security van locks are available, such as the Yale Heavy Duty Van Lock.

Ensure the lock you chose has been tested to British Standards EN12320:2012 to ensure it can protect against a range of attack methods, and that it is made from corrosion-resistant hardened steel for outdoor use.

SECURE OR REMOVE VALUABLES

Consider fixing down valuable equipment with security cables and maximum-security padlocks to offer protection against a range of attack methods and to keep items secure when driving.

For maximum security, chose a Boron shackle to prevent cutting and ensure they have been tested against British Standards.

PARK IN WELL-LIT AREAS

Try to park your van in a well-lit area to help deter thieves and make it easier to spot any suspicious activity. You may wish to install outside lighting or, preferably, a floodlight camera on your

property that is positioned where your vehicle is parked. Not only will it light up your outside space, but its camera will also capture thieves, enabling you to check the security status of your home and sound a siren to stop thieves in their tracks.

CONSIDER INSTALLING CCTV

Installing a security camera outside your property can help deter thieves and provide evidence in the event of a break-in.

Ensure your CCTV system can be operated remotely via your smart device, so you can monitor from wherever you are, and that it

includes night vision and a quality light such as a 2,000lm floodlight.

KEEP YOUR VAN ORGANISED

Keeping your van organised can help you quickly spot if any tools or items are missing. It also makes it harder for thieves to quickly grab items and run.

With van theft expected to increase to a staggering 20,000 vans per year by 2030, according to a study carried out by Comparethemarket.com using information from WhatDoTheyKnow.com, we are continuing to stress the importance of improved van security to trade professionals.

THE NEXGENTEC STORY

DbM introduces the expansive and agile power of nexgentec.

Founded in 1995, nexgentec was launched because of a lack of interfaces existing that were suitable to allow the high-end marine and residential markets to fully work with Dante audio over IP solutions. The MCP4K, the very first product launched by nexgentec, was warmly welcomed, and soon designated ‘the last missing link’, taking audio over IP truly to the next level.

Since then, nexgentec continues to engineer solutions that are always more efficient in terms of application, system design, size and energy consumption. It guarantees not only the best digital sound quality, but also the coolest user experience in terms of features and functions, and can be fully controlled and customised in the proprietary software modules, so it can be used for any equipment in every zone.

Today, nexgentec has made itself indispensable in this niche market, where it is being specified by most shipyards and technology advisers and installed by all the main integrators in Europe.

D bM AND NEXGENTEC JOIN FORCES

In March 2022, DbM and nexgentec established a UK distribution partnership to bring the high-quality range of Audio Over IP (AoIP) products and solutions to integrators working in the high-end residential and superyacht sector.

“Audio over IP is an increasingly popular option for integrators, seeking to offer a scalable, fully flexible and high-performance audio solution on their projects,” comments Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales at DbM. “nexgentec is the innovative brand that’s spearheading the AoIP solution, and we are delighted to be able to have partnered with them to supply their exceptional range to our customers.”

DbM supplies the UK and EIRE markets with the full range of nexgentec products and solutions and supports the brand with training to help integrators in the design, specification, installation and commissioning of an AoIP network. The nexgentec range will also be added to DbM’s complimentary Design and Specification Service, which helps integrators specify the right products and solutions for their projects.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

With nexgentec, the dream of being able to deliver large scale, high-performance projects that truly integrate everything everywhere with AoIP is becoming the reality.

nexgentec empowers the IP network for audio distribution using its pioneering implementation and bespoke innovations, including Dante and AES76 technology. Renowned for their reliability and highperformance, nexgentec’s extensive range

of digital signal processors, amplifiers and digital and multichannel audio-interfaces work together to distribute pristine audio signals from any source to any zone over a home or superyacht’s network infrastructure.

Patching and routing become logical functions configured in the nexgentec software, not via physical wired links. Loudspeakers can be connected via a single network cable and the nexgentec approach also eliminates the need and limitations of AV matrixes in traditional audio distribution systems whilst always retaining the integrity and quality of the audio signal in transmission. Integrators can also access and control nexgentec powered audio systems remotely, resolving any issues quickly and efficiently, without the need for an in-person visit.

ROOMS WITH VIEW

Tell us a little about your company, what do you specialise in? Who is involved?

Well Cinema Rooms started in 2009, so 14 years ago now. I remember we did one of the first ‘meet the installer’ articles in 2010!

We specialise in home media and cinema rooms and have moved away from the smart home side of things. We also do garden audio - especially during lockdown.

We have evolved over the years by gaining knowledge and experience, but have a great team behind us.

We have a great programmer Mike Hinton who has been in the industry for over 25 years!

Our fit-out team consist of Maciek and Ben. Ben has his own security firm but is great at a number of things like Rako & Unifi as well as room builds.

We have recently teamed up with Cinema Luxe, who provide bespoke design and interior fit-out solutions for us.

They offer us a turnkey solution that takes care of all design elements including fabrics, custom seating, bespoke joinery and construction services.

What are you doing today work wise?

We have a client who has featured in Essential Install before with their award-winning home cinema room but are now after a media room in their outbuilding.

This room is 10m by 5m with a bar, pool table and media room.

In conjunction with Cinema Luxe we have designed a beautiful looking room that ticks all the boxes in terms or look and usability.

How do feel the industry in general is doing right now?

I think the industry is in a great place. After the pandemic, installers have learned to adapt and either expand more or are just concentrating on what they know best. More customers are

looking to do more in their own homes and have such luxuries as a media or home cinema room or garden audio.

What areas of the smart home and luxury AV sector need to improve and how?

We are seeing some fantastic looking rooms out there at the moment but it’s a bit concerning what tech is behind it all. It’s like having a nice looking Porche but the engine is from a camper van!

Another taker for our new installer-focused questionnaire. This month Simon Gregory, Director, Cinema Rooms, has his say on the industry.
50 MAY 2023 COMMENT FROM THE COALFACE /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com
Cinemas Rooms would like to see more consistency across the home cinema world

That’s why at ISE we did the CEDIA/CTA RP22 course which is a paradigm shift in media and cinema room design. You can have a great looking room but if it is not designed correctly can sound awful and the image not as intended.

Some great speakers with poor off axis dispersion and a cheap AV amp is NOT giving your client the best overall experience with the nice looking room. More needs to be done on what equipment and speakers are used and why they have been chosen to get the best out of the room. I believe CEDIA RP22 will help with this for both customers and installers.

Do you think training needs to be improved, if so, how?

As above really, if you want to install something that is cost effective but the client wants a nice looking room is this the best value for their money?

It’s concerning that some in the industry just want to ‘give it a go’ and hope for the best, but more training from either CEDIA, distributors or more training with the Smart Homee communitie on building and selling better rooms. Their USP over any other event in this industry is to walk away from the day with real tangible added value as a business! All would be beneficial to the industry.

Is there a project you are particularly proud of and why?

It is one of our first big cinema installations which was for a BAFTA award winner and he

wanted the room not only for watching his producing work, but for nominating potential BAFTA’s. A lot of responsibility to get the sound and picture spot on which I think we achieved. The 12-seater cinema back then looked and sounded fantastic!

Are there any brands or products you particularly like working with, and why?

We like working with people who offer great support, so whether it’s the design, supply or technical assistance that’s who we like to use. Nothing worse when someone does not get back to you when on site and your there stuck working until 10pm at night!

What is the best and the worst thing that has happened to you on site?

Our best was a small cinema room we did and the client said ‘this is the best room in the house. If I could sleep in here I would!’ The worst was when one of our installers needed a number two at the 12-seater cinema job but the toilet was not connected to the piping system so when flushed it went everywhere!

What is the most unusual client request you have had?

We have had it twice now where the client wanted the Pearl & Dean theme as every movie started to evoke an instant aroma of popcorn and that cinema experience.

How do you see the sector changing in the future?

Standards will play a bigger factor in the industry and how it is implemented compared to today. A more immersive experience will be expected from the client such as the use of video walls and active VR experience. Imagine those 3D immersive outdoor LED displays for advertising that you see.

Are there persons/organisations/ companies that have been particularly inspirational in your work life? Why?

After the pandemic we saw and connected with Together for Cinema. During the lockdown we were lucky enough to still be going to customer’s nice houses and the cinema rooms and outdoor swimming pools with garden audio and what Together for Cinema wanted to achieve really resonated with us and we just wanted to help.

Ian Morrish has since told us we were the first installer to sponsor them and really gave him the belief that Together for Cinema was going to work.

It’s great to see them go from strength to strength with lots of installers and distributors getting behind them. It such a worthwhile cause for children’s hospices and other deserving causes.

Away from work what are you interests/hobbies?

I like to play tennis and I’m a member at the local tennis club. The whole family are now getting more involved. I like watching football and playing video games on the big screen.

You have magic powers and get one wish concerning the smart home and luxury AV market, what are going to wish for?

More consistency within the industry would be nice. If you ever have had a takeover job you know what I mean!

Favourite music and movies? What are you watching/listening to right now?

Love a bit of Metallica and favourite movie would be The Shawshank Redemption but have probably watched Pulp Fiction more than any other film. Right now anything in lossless Spatial Audio sounds fantastic and the latest Depeche Mode Memento Mori album really gives a system a good test.

You can invite three people (living or not) out for a meal/drink, who’s coming and why?

Robin Williams, because he would be just all round great and he loved Zelda games so would talk to him about this most the night. David Attenborough for his life stories and how he has seen the world change and Dwayne ‘the rock’ Johnson for his positive attitude towards life and how inspirational he is to others.

FIND DIRECTION AND STAY ON COURSE!

David Fell, a former system integrator who possesses in-depth knowledge of technology, business development, and business strategy on a global scale, begins a new ‘Installer Academy’ series exclusively for EI. This series will provide valuable guidance on how to establish, expand and maintain a successful business in the smart home and luxury AV industry. First up, how to set yourself on course for success.

One of the key elements of building a successful business is to have a well-defined mission and vision. Your mission statement should articulate the purpose of your business, while your vision statement should describe the future you want to create. Having a clear mission and vision will help you align your business activities with your goals and values. Another important aspect of having a clear direction and plan is to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timebound (SMART) goals. SMART goals will help you stay focused, motivated, and accountable. You should also list the resources you need to achieve your goals, such as operating capital, business assets, talent, technology and partnerships. In addition, you should create a business plan that outlines your market analysis, competitive landscape, marketing strategy, sales forecast, financial projections, and operational plan. Your business plan should be a living document you can update and refine as your business evolves.

IDENTIFYING YOUR TARGET MARKET AND UNDERSTANDING THEIR NEEDS

Knowing your target market will help you tailor your offerings, messaging and customer experience to their preferences and pain points.

To identify your target market, you should conduct market research to gather information about their demographics, psychographics, behaviours and attitudes. You can use various tools and techniques to collect data, such as surveys, interviews, focus groups and social media listening. Once you have identified your target market, you should create buyer personas representing your ideal customers. A buyer persona is a fictional character that embodies the characteristics and preferences of your target market, this will help you empathise with your customers, anticipating their needs.

RESEARCHING THE COMPETITION AND DIFFERENTIATING YOUR BUSINESS

Differentiation means creating a unique value proposition that sets your business apart. Your value proposition should articulate the benefits and outcomes your customers can expect from you. Conduct a thorough competitive analysis that identifies your competitors’ strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You should also analyse their product offerings, pricing strategies, marketing tactics and customer feedback. Based on your competitive analysis, you should identify areas where you

can differentiate your business. For example, you could focus on a specific niche, offer a more personalised customer experience, provide better pricing or quality, or leverage emerging technologies. In addition, you should create a unique brand identity that reflects your values, personality and style. Your brand identity should be consistent across all touchpoints, including your website, social media, branding, and advertising.

CREATING A UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION AND BRAND IDENTITY

Your value proposition should articulate the benefits and outcomes your customers can expect from you. You need to identify your unique selling proposition (USP), which should be customer-focused, relevant and compelling. To create a strong brand identity, you should define your brand’s mission, vision, values and personality. Your mission statement should articulate the purpose of your business, while your vision statement should describe the future you want to create. Your brand values should reflect the principles and beliefs that guide your business decisions, while your brand personality should be the human traits that represent your brand’s character.

DEVELOPING A MARKETING STRATEGY TO REACH YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

Your marketing strategy should be customercentric, data-driven and integrated across all touchpoints. You need to define your marketing objectives, which are the specific goals you want to achieve with your marketing efforts. Your marketing objectives should be aligned with your business goals and SMART. Once you have defined your marketing objectives, you should conduct market research to gather insights about your target audience, such as their demographics, psychographics, behaviours and attitudes. Based on your research, you should create a buyer’s journey map that outlines the touchpoints and interactions that your customers have with you. A buyer’s journey map will help you understand the customer’s perspective, identify pain points and opportunities, and optimise your marketing efforts. In addition, you should develop a content marketing plan that includes various formats and topics that resonate with your target audience. Content marketing can help you build brand awareness, generate leads and nurture customer relationships. You should also leverage social media, email marketing, search engine optimisation (SEO) and paid advertising to reach your target audience.

ESTABLISHING PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS

Partnerships and collaborations can help you access new markets, technologies and resources - and leverage the expertise and credibility of other businesses. You must identify potential partners that share your values, vision and goals. You should also assess their strengths, weaknesses and reputation to ensure they align

with your business strategy. Once you have identified potential partners, you should contact them and propose a partnership or collaboration that benefits both parties. Your proposal should articulate the value proposition, scope, and benefits of the partnership or collaboration. In addition, you should participate in industry events, conferences and associations to network with other businesses and professionals.

STAYING UP-TO-DATE WITH TECHNOLOGY AND TRENDS

New technology and trends can help you improve your products and services, streamline your operations and enhance your customer experience. You must also conduct regular market research and monitor industry publications, blogs and forums and attend industry events, conferences and webinars to learn about emerging technologies and trends. Consideration must also be made to invest in research and development (R&D) to create new products and services, ones that meet the evolving needs of your target market. R&D can help you innovate, differentiate and create a competitive advantage.

BUILDING A TEAM AND COMPANY CULTURE

A strong team and company culture can help you attract and retain top talent, foster creativity and innovation and create a positive work environment. You need to define your hiring strategy, which includes the skills, experience and personality traits that you want your team members to have. You should also create a job description that clearly outlines the responsibilities, requirements and benefits of the position. Once you have defined your hiring strategy, you should recruit, interview and onboard candidates that fit your criteria and align with your values and culture. You should

also provide ongoing training, feedback and recognition to help your team members grow and develop. In addition, you should create a company culture that reflects your values, personality and style. Your company culture should be inclusive, transparent and supportive. You should also provide opportunities for team building, social events and community service.

CONTINUOUSLY EVALUATING AND ADAPTING YOUR STRATEGY

Evaluating and adapting your business strategy can help you identify opportunities, mitigate risks and optimise your performance. To evaluate and adapt your business strategy, you need to define your key performance indicators (KPIs), which are the metrics that you use to measure your business performance. Your KPIs should be aligned with your business objectives and SMART. Once you have defined your KPIs, you should monitor and analyse them regularly to identify trends, patterns, and insights. You should also conduct periodic SWOT analyses to assess your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Based on your analysis, you should adjust your business strategy and tactics to optimise your performance and achieve your goals. You should also communicate your changes and updates to your team, partners and customers.

CONCLUSION AND KEY TAKEAWAYS

Building a successful business requires more than just a great idea and a few products. By following these steps and strategies, I hope you can continue to build a thriving and resilient business. One that distinguishes itself from competitors, exceeds the needs of your customer base, and accomplishes your commercial objectives.

THE MOORINGS SETS SAIL

Since 2003, Sensible Technology has been delivering technology-focused solutions for high-specification homes and commercial premises in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The business started by delivering multi-room audio systems, lighting control systems and high quality light fittings. Since changing ownership (to Matt Guille and John Brimage) in May 2016, Sensible now provides significantly more ‘smart home’ products and services including Control4 home automation Lutron and Rako Lighting Control Systems and structured cabling (data and WiFi networks).

For this project, John explains, “We regularly work with architects, builders and interior designers and are often involved early on in the design stage. Having worked with Architect Tom Bourgaize (The Drawing Room) before, we were again invited to specify the technology part of this stunning east coast Guernsey home.”

John continues, “We had not worked with the client before, so it was important to discuss with them their lifestyle and important technology they enjoy in the home. One of the requests was a no compromise home

cinema and easy-to-use technology. We agreed a brief from the start and very little changed throughout.

“The client had already experienced Lutron and Control4, so already had knowledge on what a smart home can offer. Naturally we chose Lutron Homeworks QSX for lighting control with the tried and tested international Seetouch keypads. During the first fix part of the project Lutron released the elegant and versatile hand crafted Alisse keypads which was an immediate hit with our clients so replaced the original specification.”

John Brimage, Technical Director at Sensible Technology, guides EI through this impressive project, including a high-performance home cinema.

John also explains that ceiling coffers were a feature designed by the architect in most rooms, so the team chose to illuminate these by installing 3000k linear LEDs linked to the Lutron DALI system. For areas where downlights were required the team used used Orluna lighting, a favourite with the firm since 2013.

For light control, John explains, “For shading solutions, we always work with our partners Ace Contracts, so we immediately asked them to take the lead with this. The clients were introduced to the team at Ace who specified a wide range of solutions from Lutron.”

As for particular technical challenges, John reveals, “We had to integrate Velux motorised skylights, shutters and blinds so they could

be controlled via the Lutron keypads and individually via a Control4 Touch screen, this was integrated using a Lutron contact closure interface and Velux’s io-homecontrol Interface. Also due to the location of the property (on the cliffs) the 4G mobile signal was terrible, so Stella Doradus equipment was installed to boost the signal.

The home also features a multi-room audio system using Bluesound Powernode amplifiers, Bluesound Pulse Soundbar+, Gallo Acoustics Habitat speakers, Triad Silver inceiling speakers and some hidden options in the form of Amina Mobius 7i and an Amina ALF80 invisible subwoofer. The home also enjoys viewing options from a Samsung QLED Q95 and Frame TV.

Comfort and cutting edge tech collide in the cinema

THE HOME CINEMA

Following the request for an easy to use, but high-performance home cinema, John says, “We immediately got in touch with Pulse Cinemas, and following a video call they put their team of designers to work on three different specification for the space we had to work with.

“Pulse cinemas specified suitable speakers and amplification for the room size from Paradigm and Anthem, a motorised screen from Screen Research and projector from Sim2. The room was small in size with a low ceiling height which meant we had to get creative with the seating layout to enable access to the back seats.

“Again, Ace Contracts supplied the acoustic wall treatments which also gave the room that extra bit of luxury. Premium leather Fortress Seating chairs with retractable tables, reading lights and cup holders were supplied by Pulse Cinemas. We also fitted a Buttkicker (Haptic Transducer) in each seat for that extra impact when watching action movies and a star ceiling from Starscape.

“I think we all agree our favourite part was the cinema. As a business we had installed cinemas before but not as astounding as this room turned out to be.”

Karma-AV has introduced the ultra-discreet SVS 3000 in-wall subwoofer to UK integrators.

Promising reference low-frequency performance on par with traditional cabinet subwoofer designs and primed for retrofit or new construction, the new 3000 in-wall subwoofer system from SVS delivers classleading depth and dynamics, versatility and control for ultra-discreet architectural applications, says Karma AV.

BOOMBASTIC BOLLARD

Origin Acoustics, manufacturer of architectural audio, announces the new Bollard 10 outdoor landscape speakers from Ambisonic Systems are now available.

The new Ambisonic Big Bollard 10 delivers incredible performance from a stunning aesthetic design for any residential or commercial outdoor application, says the maker. Available with round or square aluminum sleeves in silver, black, or bronze finish, each speaker contains a 10in subwoofer, 6.5in polypropylene mid-range woofer and a round planar magnetic ribbon tweeter. The round ribbon tweeter design allows 360° dispersion and is treated with a Kapton coating using a special application process that allows the product to stand up to the outdoor elements without affecting the sound. The Bollard 10 speakers are built tough for the outdoor elements and are available in 180° and 360° sonic dispersion options.

Each speaker has an adjustable impedance setting for 8ohms, along with 70v/100v with

The 3000 in-wall system comprises twin custom designed high-excursion 9in SVS drivers in a sealed aluminium/MDF flush-fitting cabinet, driven by a unique outboard version of the company’s Sledge amplifier platform from its award-winning 3000 Micro subwoofer. Generating 800W RMS, 2,500W peak power, the outboard amplifier combines the highcurrent output of discrete MOSFETs with Class D efficiency and the processing power of an Analog Devices DSP.

Equipped with 56-bit filtering, the 50 MHz Analog Devices Audio DSP is described as the most sophisticated available in a home audio subwoofer amplifier. It helps to shape the ideal audio response through powerful DSP controls and pre-sets via the SVS subwoofer DSP smartphone app for Apple, Android and Amazon devices. Using the app via Bluetooth, installers are able to set and control volume, adjust crossover frequencies and set the three-band parametric EQ, as well as polarity and room gain, all from the listening position. Bi-directional feedback shows the adjustments in real time on both the app and the amplifier’s front panel interface.

For added versatility, the 2U rack mount amplifier design can be configured to output the full 800W to a single subwoofer or to supply 400W each to a dual subwoofer array.

Installation of the 3000 in-wall is described as simple for both retrofit and new construction.

By combining easy installation for both retrofit and pre-construction opportunities, comprehensive control and tuning capabilities, versatile amplifier design and most importantly, reference low-frequency performance on a par with traditional cabinet subwoofer designs, the SVS 3000 in-wall is a significant advancement in the art of deep and discreet bass for architectural speaker system designers.

multiple wattage taps for each. This allows for installation flexibility and with nearly 300W of peak power handling and the ability to play from 32Hz to 20kHz.

AUDIO INTELLIGENCE FOR THE UK

Operly - the ‘revolutionary’ German speaker manufacturer - enters the UK market for the first time with its flagship horn-loaded speaker, the Operly Intelligence III.

The product is now available across the UK (from Hi-Fi Network) showcasing Operly’s combination of avant-garde design and groundbreaking audiophile engineering.

Operly’s unique, horn-loaded speakers are available to the UK Hi-Fi market for the first time, with the release of its flagship line - the Operly Intelligence III. Designed for discerning

audiophiles who demand nothing but the best in sound quality, the Operly Intelligence III represents a whole new generation of fullrange speakers, combining German precision engineering with advanced, revolutionary technologies developed by Operly’s team of expert engineers, says the maker. The result is described as a rich audio delivery with exceptional and effortless clarity.

The Operly Intelligence III’s striking, standout design is said to be a fitting aesthetic for its cutting-edge engineering - a visual

embodiment of its philosophy for creating the shortest possible sound reproduction path. The impressive monocoque body is constructed from high grade fiberglass, with a uniform thickness of 15mm along the entire length of the backward horn and formed in a vacuum for maximum strength.

Under the hood, elements of audiophilia go hand in hand with brand new technologies, looking to elevate the entire sonic experience as a result. The driver features a unique design, uses a short coil with small diameter and high gap, achieving uniformity of the magnetic field and maximum fidelity. A patented full-range horn system eliminates all connections between the forward and backward horns - allowing the front horn to be perfectly mated to the speaker diaphragm, resulting in an arresting design that is exceptionally good for the sound, says the speaker’s creator.

Operly says the Intelligence III is set to make a serious mark on the UK HiFi industry, making horn-loaded sonic excellence a tantalising prospect for British music lovers nationwide. Operly operly.uk

DOORBIRD FIREWALL TAKES FLIGHT

The new DoorBird A1051 Internet Firewall is now available worldwide. DoorBird says it is the first in the industry to launch a user-friendly solution that provides additional protection for the network of door communication systems.

The easy-to-install firewall increases security for all networks where DoorBird products are used - both inside and outside. The Berlinbased manufacturer Bird Home Automation GmbH creates another selling point in the field of smart IP video communication with the DoorBird A1051 Internet Firewall product.

The firewall is designed to stop unauthorised network traffic without the need for complicated configurations. The product is pre-configured at the factory and ready for immediate use. The installation takes place between the local internet router and the DoorBird IP video door communication network - easily and without any prior technical knowledge, says the maker. The network is protected against unauthorised access at main and side entrances, underground garage entrances, floor accesses or other rental areas indoors. This makes the internet firewall suitable for large office complexes, commercial buildings, apartment buildings and single-family residences. For example, a tenant could misuse the network cable connected to an IP video indoor station to

surf the internet or gain unauthorised access to other network components in the building. Implementing firewall solutions for this purpose with well-known firewall products is expensive, complicated and most of all very timeconsuming to implement on a day-to-day basis, says DoorBird.

In order to meet individual network requirements, smart home systems from third-party providers (e.g. DoorBird Connect partners) can be ‘whitelisted’.

Q ACOUSTICS LAUNCHES 5000 LOUDSPEAKER SERIES

The 5000 stereo and home cinema loudspeaker series from Q Acoustics redefines how a speaker can look and sound, says the maker. Showcasing an advancement in driver design, the introduction of the leading-edge C3 Continuous Curved Cone profile in the mid/ bass driver is included to elevate the 5000 series beyond its class and will form a technical platform for years to come. The series also inherits innovative cabinet and driver technology from the company’s flagship Concept range. The 5000 series has also been created to bring sophistication to any listening room with its contemporary and minimalist design lines.

Positioned between the multiple awardwinning 3000i range and Concept series models, the 5000 family is comprised of the 5010 bookshelf, 5020 standmount, 5040 floorstander, 5050 large floorstander, with the 5090 centre-channel completing the line-up for a home cinema speaker set-up.

C3 (pronounced ‘C-cubed’) Continuous Curved Cone design in the mid/bass driver ensures smoother high-frequency integration with the tweeter and superior bass dynamics. Sophisticated, clean and contemporary design with dark acrylic baffle motif mirrors the minimalist C3 Continuous Curved Cone profile.

QMOTION TURNS TO REVOLVE

With a design taken from the Concept series, but in a new housing, the high-frequency driver is fully hermetically sealed and mechanically isolated from the front baffle to protect from internal cabinet pressure and resonances from the mid/bass driver.

Ground-up mid/bass driver design delivers increased power handling.

Point-2-Point (P2P) internal bracing stiffens the cabinet to minimise lower frequency vibrations, while focusing stereo imaging and

improving soundstage. Helmholtz Pressure Equalisers (HPE) reduces internal pressure and standing waves (5040 and 5050 models only).

All speaker models arrive in a choice of four modern but classic finishes including the introduction of a new stylish lighter wood veneer. High-quality finishes include Satin Black, Satin White, Santos Rosewood and Holme Oak.

QMotion UK has introduced Revolve – a simple, whisper-quiet and elegant automated curtain solution for homes and businesses.

Revolve is, according to QMotion, the only revolving motorised drapery system available on the market for professional integration, providing an attractive option for installers, interior designers and their clients. The pressed aluminium rods feature formed grove

spirals, which allow the drapery hook to move effortlessly across the track. Revolve’s eggshaped ring design prevents any ‘wavering’ of the rings as they traverse along the rod, minimising noise and increasing the visual appeal. The rings include a feature where a bead chain can snap in, allowing for a ‘ripple’ look with a flat panel or rod top curtain.

Installation is made easy with rod bracket plates. These allow for easy adjustment, while the bracket arms enable the rod to simply snap in. In dual applications, only one control board is needed and it is housed in the Sensor Box. Motors from both rods connect directly into the Sensor Box for control and power through the single power supply. A grouping option allows users to move one curtain by pendant activation and send every other curtain in the group to that position. Revolve also includes a sensor to detect obstruction, which means that the motor will stop if required, preventing any damage to the curtain.

These motors can be powered by four different battery options, two wall plug options, a hardwire panel and several remote-control options. Revolve can also be quickly and easily integrated with popular third-party control platforms such as Control4, Crestron, RTI and URC for quick and intuitive operation.

Revolve rods are available in formed, fluted and smooth shapes. The formed rod is either manual or motorised, while the fluted and smooth rods are supplied as manually operated options.
