EI LIVE! PREVIEW

THE SHOW IS BACK!

SEPTEMBER

MAKE TIME FOR EI LIVE! 2021 A very warm welcome to the EI Live! Special Preview issue of Essential Install! One of our fav issues of the year; we love the anticipation and buzz around the industry as we build up to the show. Obviously, this one has been a while coming for obvious reasons, and we completely understand that for some people travelling and attending a show still presents significant challenges. However, for those that are planning on coming, the whole team has been working flat-out to make your trip the best it can be. All the relevant COVID-19 restrictions and measures needed to put on a safe show will be in place and we have been working closely with the venue to ensure this. Our website (https://www.eiliveshow. com) is now fully up and running and is accepting registrations, so get over to the site now. You can also do loads of the planning needed for your trip on the website too, such as picking accommodation and planning how to travel, its all on there - so go and have a good look around. You can also see who will be speaking in the Technical Theatre this year and what subjects they will be tackling, so you can make that part of your show visit too.

We need also to thank OneAV, (the main sponsor for this year’ show), for all the support the company has shown and the faith that they have placed into the hands of the organising team. This goes for the industry as whole, as the show has tried to maintain contact and momentum via initiatives such as the EI Live! Interactive on-line event, to which the industry responded to with great belief in the show and demonstrates the industry’s ability to come together and put on this fantastic event. This show is and always will be a team effort in full partnership with the industry it serves, it was created that way and will stay the way. This issue naturally contains a full show preview so check that out and discover what some of the exhibitors are up to at the show this year, but you know the only way to experience it for real is to be there. Everyone has found new ways of communicating over the last 18 months, some of those new habits will stay, but there is no substitute for face to face contact and seeing new products for real and in the flesh. The Smart Building Awards will also be back at the show and take place on the evening of the first day at the Village Hotel, Farnborough. You can get more details and tickets at the dedicated awards site smartbuildingawards.com.

See you at the show!

PULSE CINEMAS TAKES ON NEW STAFF AND COMPLETES DEMO SUITE RENOVATION

Corey Hall is joining Pulse Cinemas to support and promote dealers in Scotland and the North of England

Pulse Cinemas’ Reference and Apartment Cinemas and Media Room experiences are all now fully open for demonstrations following a complete overhaul and refit to accommodate new brands and an ambition to offer what the company argues are amongst the best demonstration facilities in Europe. The Reference Cinema now offers the combination of dual SIM2 Nero 4S set-up partnered with StormAudio and the most recent addition to line-up Alcons Audio. There are some cosmetic finishing touches to add, but the company underlines the space is fully operational and able to show just what the combination of these brands can go. Other notable additions include the driving sim concept being offered by new addition to the group Pulse Simulations which is located in the updated Apartment Cinema.

Pulse is also keen to underline the addition of new staff which include Account Managers for the South and North of the UK. An announcement on the Southern position will be made soon, but it has been announced that the Northern Account Manager role will be filled by experienced AV professional Corey Hall. Corey’s current role at a respected dealer/retailer includes programming home automation, selling and setting up AV systems as well as getting involved in the physical installation of whole home automation systems. Corey explains, “I know Pulse Cinemas well as in my current role we deal with some of the brands the company supplies and supports. When the new role of Northern Account Manager came up, it felt like a natural fit for my experience and ambitions at this point. Pulse Cinemas’ commitment to genuine support of customers and dealers fits with my own philosophy of how things should be done and so I am really looking forward to leveraging all my experience and contacts to improve the company’s presence and support levels.” Pulse Cinemas has also announced that Felicity Miller will be taking up the role of Sales Administrator, allowing the rest of the team to spend more time proactively supporting dealers. ESSENTIAL PEOPLE KEF has announced the appointment of Sarah Yule who joins the team as UK Commercial Director. Sarah is tasked with the continued development and growth of the KEF brand within its home market as the company continues its development of its high fidelity, wireless and passive speaker portfolio. Sarah brings a wealth of knowledge after building her career in Sales and Marketing leadership with some of the best-known music, audio and consumer electronics brands. Familiar with the industry, Sarah joins KEF after most recently heading up the EMEA Retail marketing and sales division at Audio-Technica Europe, encompassing the sales, marketing and product category teams. Sarah is also a board director for the Music Industries Association (MIA) and sits on both the accessibility and business development strategic panels. She is also a professional mentor for the Central Research Laboratory ‘Boost’ hardware accelerator program and involved at advisor level with several creative industry start-ups. Sarah has a true passion for audio and is a regular panellist in talks around audio, innovation, technology and music - and an advocate for women in tech. KEF’s dedication to bringing joy in the experience of sound, resonates with my passion for the beauty and balance that audio brings to the lives of us all. I am excited to build on all the great achievements to date and aid the drive of our continued strategic growth.” Atlona CEO and Co-Founder Ilya Khayn Departs Company. Ilya’s successful 18-year legacy includes important key milestones across AV product innovation, global business growth and strong brand reputation, as well as establishing strong integration between Atlona and parent company Panduit. Departing as from September 15, nearly three years after Panduit’s acquisition of the company, Jamey Swigert, Atlona’s Director of AV Sales and Business Development, will assume the company’s top leadership role as Executive Director on the same date. Ilya co-founded Atlona in 2003 with his brother Michael, Atlona’s Vice President of Engineering through October 2020. The two entrepreneurs transformed Atlona from a two-person, garagebased company focused on home AV connectivity products to a leading global supplier of AV collaboration, control and distribution solutions. Ilya was largely responsible for strategising Atlona’s now-

global partner network, which has established the company’s brand in key business regions worldwide. Atlona’s early push toward AV over IP product innovation captured the attention of Panduit, a leader in IT networking and infrastructure solutions. The acquisition has differentiated Atlona from its competition by introducing the brand to a new base of IT consultants, resellers and integrators seeking networked AV solutions for their end users. Ilya says that it will be ‘business as usual for Atlona’ as Jamey assumes the leadership role and anticipates that Panduit’s proven strategic approach to product quality, innovation and simplicity of deployment and operation will lead to a new era of substantial growth and success. This includes a continued emphasis on making high-quality AV products that are IT-friendly. Dutchman Jan Leerschool has passed the baton to Johannes Kampert, who, as Head of Global Sales, will in the future be responsible for the international business of loudspeaker manufacturer Pan Acoustics. Jan has been scaling down his activities over the past few years in order to very gradually approach life in retirement,” said Udo Borgmann, CEO of Pan Acoustics GmbH, who hired the go-getting 69-year-old in 2010. Since then, things have gone rapidly uphill. Jan used his experience and network in the AV industry to advance the Wolfenbüttelbased company piece by piece worldwide together with founder and CEO Udo. Jan said, “When Udo and I introduced the Pan Beam series of active line source speakers to the world eleven years ago, we were an eight-man operation. To date, Pan Acoustics has grown to almost 30 employees, which is great.” Jan now plans to devote his free time entirely to the passion of working with wood. “The fact that we are, where we are now and operate as a reliable global player that keeps pace with the competition in terms of technology is also largely thanks to Jan,” explained Udo. The company now supplies to more than 33 countries through its exclusive sales partners. Johannes Kampert, who has headed up overall sales at Pan Acoustics since March 2021, will direct all international sales activities for Pan Acoustics. “Jan leaves big shoes to fill and has created an amazing distributor network. That’s a great foundation for me and I‘m looking forward to creating more projects with our sound reinforcement solutions together with our partners worldwide,” said Johannes. Mark Bromfield has joined CUK Group as Director of System Solution Sales. After 16 years as business development manager at POLAR, well known industry figure, Mark Bromfield, has joined CUK Group in the newly created role of director of system solution sales. This new field-based role is one of a number that require to be filled at CUK Group during a period of rapid expansion fuelled by both organic growth and acquisition. highlight even more of the benefits provided by our latest range of solutions – as well as our dedicated new partner programmes – to develop business across the range of verticals, notably for me this year, retail, hospitality, education and corporate.” Technological Innovations Group (TIG), the sales agency for Crestron in EMEA, has announced the appointment of Andre Goltara as its new Residential Sales Engineer. Based in TIG’s Head Quarters in Rijmenam, Belgium, Andre’s responsibilities will include working closely with the sales team to communicate to AV integrators the real value of Crestron’s residential solutions, and to demonstrate how the Crestron Home ecosystem itself can be the game changer for their business. Additionally, Andre will also manage TIG’s range of interactive Experience Spaces, located in central hubs across EMEA. Andre commented, “I’m excited to start working for TIG as I see a lot of new opportunities in growing the residential side of the business in Europe and in showcasing Crestron’s technology in our Experience Spaces. This year in 2021 I achieved the Crestron Master Technology Architect certification for both commercial and residential markets, together with only another 50 people around the world. I have always felt like I am part of the Crestron family. So now I am thrilled to start my journey as a Crestron Sales Engineer at TIG!” Steven Dullaert, TIG’s Director of Residential Sales for Crestron in EMEA, added, “We are delighted to welcome Andre into our residential sales team! ESSENTIAL HABITECH

ALWAYS ADDING VALUE

Stand 17 will showcase the astonishing qualities of Samsung’s MicroLED tech

With the custom infrastructure that’s shaping the future, we’ll boost the wow factor at EI Live! and welcome everyone with new ways to add value, says MD Jonathan Pengilley. It’s great to be back at EI Live! to experience truly ground-breaking CI innovation in communion with our glorious little industry. If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that the best products and design services will always find customers. We’re still winning the argument for the highest performance and reliability, but when the rules and tools of engagement are changing so fast, staying ahead of the curve is a big priority. And that’s where distis like Habitech come in. We’re not an IoT company focussed on volume. Instead, we aim to generate productive relationships with customers at every level, based on targeted support and an expectation of mutual rewards. It’s a custom approach in tune with CI, which Habitech has been developing since 2006.

HABITECH TEAMS

I started the company to create a single point of contact for integrators dealing with high-networth individuals wishing to source all aspects of technology for their homes. And I’ve tried to add value with the most relevant products and training ever since. Today, as changed consumer

14 SEPTEMBER 2021

priorities and preferences supercharge the home’s gravitational pull, Habitech is most powerful where demand is greatest, because we’ve been nimble enough to anticipate future trends and support the introduction of new technologies to our partners. As far back as 2012 when broadband loitered at a snaily 40Mbps, we launched our ProNet initiative to supply dealers with the best networking products, the fastest cable infrastructure, and the best training and design tools. We’ve covered the boom in cinema and media room design by partnering with highend brands while offering training and system design intel alongside arguably the UK’s most compelling demonstration rooms. And for outdoor AV entertainment we’ve amassed the widest range of product options available, backed, of course, by industry-leading design support, including SPL mapping. All of this with the reassurance of high stock holdings, rapid-reaction tech and product backup on-line and on-site, secure web access for purchases, pricing and availability 24/7, and the soon-tobe-launched Hab-U on-line training platform. End-to-end, across the CI ecosystem and at every level, our objective is to add positive energy to your business whether you’re new to

CI or an established hand. So, with the aim of enriching existing partnerships and making new ones, here’s a brief intro to our line-up at EI Live!

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Driving the astonishing visual scale and fidelity of Samsung’s modular ‘The Wall’ screens, and soon to feature on a new range of singlepanel displays from 110in down, MicroLED technology delivers precise control over picture quality at the pixel level. Because each pixel is the product of three tiny self-emissive RGB LEDs, its brightness and colour can be delivered with amazing accuracy or be turned off entirely to create a ‘perfect’ black for maximum contrast. As a result, MicroLED tech generates a bright, contrast-rich display across wide viewing angles similar in many ways to OLED panels but with added benefits. There’s no organic colour filtering, so brightness is up around 2000 nits, double OLED’s peak. Power efficiency is greatly improved for the same reason - MicroLEDs can be brighter with less effort - and, at around 100,000 hours (11 years), lifespan is in a different league as well. In other words, MicroLED gives you all the things you love about OLED with none of the tradeoffs. See for yourself at stand 17.

In a breakthrough for architectural speaker design, the Sonance ‘Motion Flex’ invisible speaker line of twoway 6.5in/8in/10in speakers and dedicated 10in/15in woofers, is able to deliver the fullrange fidelity of a high-quality visible speaker. COVER THE GROUND WITH SOUND

GREAT COFFEE AND CONNECTIONS

The genius of Sonance design extends to garden areas as well. Represented at EI Live! by the ‘Garden Series’ of outdoor speakers, the original Sonance sat/sub format envelops a space with clear and balanced audio by deploying small satellite speakers and subwoofers arranged around the perimeter of the property. Full range sound comes from below, above, front and behind, and because it’s directed inwards, there’s less chance of it spilling into neighbouring properties. The new Sonance Garden Series is scalable in up to 16.2 configurations and includes the SGS 8.1 system of eight 3.5in SGS satellites and 10in in-ground subwoofer, and, sold separately, a four-satellite extension pack and a single 10in sub.

On the Smart-e stand the company will feature a brand new line, the SDSC 18Gbps range (SDSC-4x4-RSP HDMI/HDBaseT Matrix) joining the already highly successful SDSC8x8-RSP. The unit is capable of switching and extending 18Gbps video up to 150m, which together with individual output downscaling from 4K>1080p, make this product ideal for corporate, educational and residential use. The company says the SDSC range including the SDSC-4x4 and 8x8 provides the ideal solution to the challenge of distributing high resolution video and audio signals throughout a building. Crystal clear images and hi-fidelity sound can now be transmitted using only a single piece of

network cable to each display. Distances of up to 150m can be achieved in a single run, making the unit ideal for large development wide distribution. Jon Lane, Smart-e’s MD, says, “Our new SDSC-4x4 joins the highly successful SDSC8x8 model already proven in many installations. Through the use of an enhanced version of HDBaseT we are able to extend video up to 150m. This superior protocol can also cope with excessive noise environments, making it ideal for retro fixing existing cable infrastructure. Each output can automatically downscale 4K resolutions to 1080p, allowing legacy displays to be integrated without compromising viewing quality.” Check it out on Stand 69.

SNAP ONE

SNAP ONE – THE ONE PARTNER THAT PROS NEED Snap One is the newly rebranded SnapAV + Control4 company that will step out for the first time in the UK at EI Live! with a simple mission – to make life easier for integrators. OS 3 AND OVRC

From humble beginnings when SnapAV shipped its first products in 2005, to the groundbreaking merger with Control4 in August 2019, the company has evolved as quickly as its technology. The latest step in this evolution is the recent rebrand to Snap One – a shift that has consolidated the union of SnapAV with Control4 and seen Snap One become a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange.

SNAP ONE’S MISSION IS SIMPLE

“Our company was founded by technology integrators who saw a better way to do things. The Snap One name reflects our ongoing mission to make life easier and reinforces our aspiration to be the one partner that pros can depend on. We’re dedicated to keeping things simple, by providing exceptional product quality and selection, premium service and support, and a shopping experience that caters for every need”, says Mark Reynolds, Senior Director EMEA, Snap One. In a fast-moving industry that never stands still, Snap One has a refreshing vision - to bring together the best people, partners and products to make lives more enjoyable, connected and secure. The goal is to deliver one simple seamless solution. From wholehome entertainment to commercial-grade infrastructure, Snap One offers holistic solutions for connected homes and businesses. “While our company name has changed, our product brands remain unchanged,” Mark continues, “We will continue to invest in Control4 as our premier automation brand, and Control4 products will remain exclusive to authorised partners only, helping to ensure excellent partner and customer experiences. The Snap One ecosystem simply gives partners even more opportunity to work with us.”

The company anchors its solutions on two award-winning business platforms - Control4 Smart Home OS 3 and OvrC Remote Management. Control4 Smart Home OS 3 is the operating system for smart homes, designed to unify hundreds of connected devices within the home into one intuitive, user-friendly experience. Meanwhile, OvrC is a free cloud-based remote management platform designed exclusively for professionals. From setup to support, OvrC empowers you to install, monitor, and troubleshoot connected devices remotely to deliver world-class support from anywhere. The latest enhancements to Control4 OS 3 have further simplified the Snap One offering by bringing Control4 into the OvrC ecosystem, enabling OvrC Pro on all Control4 EA and CA Series Controllers. This streamlines maintenance and support by facilitating remote management and servicing to all Control4 connected devices on a system, enabling more Control4 partners to offer service contracts to their clients. This is a significant step forward for the industry, and more proof that Snap One is leading the way.

ESSENTIAL HDANYWHERE

HDANYWHERE STACKS UP ANOTHER WINNER! MHUB S is HDANYWHERE’s (HDA) new stackable matrix which offers installers an option to spec a HDBaseT based solution for up to 32 displays by combining multiple MHUB S systems to operate as one unified matrix. With the release of MHUB S, HDA is simultaneously aiming to move into mediumsized AV distribution projects with a viable alternative to the existing solutions available and create a foothold in the control arena with heavily updated versions of uControl and new operating system: uOS.

The system… MHUB S (8+8x8) 100 is an 8x8 HDBaseT matrix supporting 100m of 18G/4K range and downscaling, similar to that found in the flagship MHUB PRO 2.0 system.

…can be stacked Where the system differs from the rest of HDA’s product offering is that MHUB S features eight video mirror ports on the input stage meaning that all video sources can be split and fed into another MHUB S system - increasing the number of distributed displays by eight at a time. Control over the system is made possible by HDA’s second new product, the Zone Processor, which manages the stack, turning it from unrelated MHUBs into one managed matrix incorporating IR passback, uControl, IoT capability and sequences throughout the entire system. HDA is keen to point out that whilst the Zone Processor is important in its road map, it is not necessary if an installer wants to use a control system. The MHUB S + control system offers those customers an easy alternative option for low-cost mid-sized video distribution projects - no more complex than installing any other MHUB.

Control gives MHUB S the edge HDA admits that the market is already saturated with AV over IP offerings from manufacturers who are selling much of the same thing in

38 SEPTEMBER 2021

this space - that is video distribution using encoders, decoders (of various types) and a managed switch. Where HDA aims to gain traction as an option to existing solutions is the fact that control is directly built into MHUB’s offering. With MHUB S there is no need to use a control system if budgets do not permit it, with no noticeable sacrifice in the end result. Where this might have been a deal breaker with AV over IP, with MHUB S it is no issue as control for everything connected to MHUB (that’s sources, AVRs, MHUB and displays) is included in the single unit cost. It’s possible to go even further with uControl’s best-in-class API which means anything uControl can do can be leveraged by any HTTP capable device to create entirely unique control applications for the end user. This means that doing something like turning on all displays, switching to an input like Sky Q and going to a desired channel, is as easy as sending a single URL to the system with options to automate that (make this happen at 6am every weekday) now easier than ever before.

Five reasons to consider MHUB S as an option against AV over IP: 1. Significantly cheaper There is no denying that there is a jump in costs between a standard (8x8) fixed format matrix and a similar AV over IP system. As systems scale up there is a natural crossover between HDBaseT and AV over IP, and HDA has identified this at around 32 displays or four MHUB S systems stacked together. If you’re building a solution between 8 and 32 screens then it’s likely that MHUB S is going to be the cheaper alternative. 2. HDBaseT is easier than IP That jump in cost is also mirrored with a jump in complexity. HDA knew that its network of installers were keen to explore bigger AV

projects but many were cautious of entering the world of IP based distribution. Now there is another option in MHUB S, because, in comparison, installing HDBaseT is relatively simple, with no knowledge of switches, IP or knowledge of all component SKU’s required. 3. Video quality The most affordable (and most common) AV over IP systems operate over a 1G backbone. Full-Fat 4K is 18G and MHUB S uses TPC compression to fit this into 10.2G which HDBaseT supports. AV over IP has to compress harder and more aggressively to get 18G down to 1G. Video quality is subjective but that is a lot of data to crush down to. 4. uControl is included for free but not necessary MHUB S comes with a built-in ability to control itself and the devices connected to it using uControl or HDA’s API. For some commercial scenarios this may negate the need for a control system entirely but using uControl is optional and control system drivers are available for Control4, RTI, Savant, Loxone and Crestron. 5. Familiar Burn less calories thinking about your video distribution solution and spend more time actually building it, argues the maker. Choosing MHUB S over AV over IP means giving a familiar sales pitch to customers, working with familiar infrastructure and using familiar technologies. Specifying MHUB S is also easy, with only 2 SKU’s to remember as everything you need comes in the box. The maker argues that for many integrators, HDA MHUB S represents a very real and capable alternative option to successfully taking on and delivering larger AV distribution projects. See MHUB S (8+8x8) 100 first at EI Live! or visit HDANYWHERE.com/mhub-s.

ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS

SEEING IS BELIEVING WITH SIM2 To create a compelling offering, installers need to deliver unique solutions that are not available elsewhere. To achieve this, it helps to work with companies that aim to do the same. Time to find out more about how Pulse Cinemas and SIM2 can transform and develop your home cinema offering, says the company’s Sales Manager, Simon Schino. SIM2 exceeds its competitors for technical specifications and product functionality and world-beating imagery, but also adds strong product aesthetics. “Our mantra with this brand is come and see how it performs and you will literally SEE the difference. This brand mixes high-performance imaging with good looks, either on show with its fantastic cabinet designs or completely hidden with the xTV concept. This ability to combine either discreet installation or good-looking products with high-performance and bright imaging is only growing in importance as home cinema evolves to include more living room and media room systems where cinemas have to complement their surroundings and cope with more ambient light. For the flexibility to cover dedicated spaces and everywhere else too, you need SIM2! The progress made by the brand is underlined by the fact that figures by analyst PMA show SIM2 second only to Sony in Europe for projectors 10K -25K category. SIM2 XTV

A key part of the SIM2 family, this shortthrow integrated system can be mounted in the ceiling, hidden in cabinetry or placed on show just below the screen. Our partnership with Minotti London, one of the capital’s most exclusive and attractive furniture showrooms, features an in-ceiling configuration arranged around a sumptuous room set that shows integrated living room home cinema at its finest. The xTV is not just about concealment and practicality, this is a real high-performance projector with 4K-UHD, laser light source, a lifetime of 25,000 hours and the ability to deliver imaging to screen sizes ranging from 85in-95in, 95in-105in and 105in-120in. Minotti London is open for your own personal screening of this wonderful technology.

THE DOMINO 4K

Now featured in our revamped Apartment Cinema, the SIM2 DOMINO 4K UHD HDR uses the same software and some of the same features as the next product up the SIM2 tree, the CRYSTAL 4K UHD HDR projector, but with a slightly simplified hardware platform. This is a very capable machine, particularly when it comes to reproducing the biggest step forward in imaging in recent times, HDR. The unit features the latest 4K 0.67in UHD

DLP chipset from Texas Instruments, high precision and resolution optics and SIM2’s advanced video processing technology. Also on-board, a 1.5x zoom lens for simple setup and a 280W lamp that enables the delivery of up to 1,900 ANSI-lumens at the screen. SIM2 is a true master of HDR and was at ground zero when the technology was being developed. As early as 2009 SIM2 worked with Dolby on a producing a popular monitor used in the commercial space. SIM2 understands HDR reproduction like no other projector maker. This model is HDR-capable (accepting an HDRencoded signal via HDMI 2.0a, HDCP 2.2) on all three of its HDMI inputs and delivers a full set of features dedicated to HDR picture display including automatic metadata recognition. This feature describes the characteristics of the image being displayed and the DOMINO 4K detects them and automatically enables its HDR mode. themed surroundings, this unit ups the ante even further with an even better-looking crystal glass exterior (white or black) and class-leading performance. Using a blue laser light source, the Crystal SH is able to deliver high brightness with a colour gamut that not only reaches REC709, but goes beyond it. The Crystal 4 SH uses two colour wheels, one with phosphors and one with dichroic filters. The first with its latest generation green and yellow phosphors offers constant emissions over the machine’s lifetime and as the temperature changes. The dichroic filter purifies the colours, delivering extreme colour accuracy. An impressive 3,600 ANSI-lumens is delivered at the screen offering the ability to inhabit dedicated spaces and living room cinema too. Compare this to the Sony VPL-VW870ES and this trails off to a much less impressive 2,200 ANSI-lumens. The Crystal 4 SH can deliver a perfect white point colour and an expanded colour space, exceeding 80% of the DCI standard (the colour space of commercial digital cinema projectors), meaning natural imaging is promoted. Assisting in calibration is LCC 4.0 (Live Colour Calibration), a special PC software developed by SIM2 that allows accurate automatic colour calibration. Worth remembering here, that if calibration is not your strong suit, our very own Technical Sales Support Manager, Simon Gibbs is on hand to assist. For the HDR performance the newest 0.66in DMD panel from Texas Instruments with state-of-the-art processing and perfect HDR management is in place. The chip allows a higher brightness and much lower dispersed light performance creating images with a higher contrast and lower black level. The Crystal SH

in fact uses the same processing developed for the SIM2 NERO 4S, recognised as the current reference standard for HDR imaging (more about that later). The Crystal SH also has a high resolution, very low dispersion 1.6x zoom projection lens. Combined with the performance of the DMD, this delivers extremely low background light and helps to deliver the model’s high-performance contrast, clarity, sharpness and uniformity over the whole screen. Other features include a response time of between 15-20 milliseconds meaning game play is responsive and immersive and the machine is also very quiet, again a strong feature for the versatility needed in today’s market. Connections wise, the unit has an impressive list of connections that make it a genuine custom install proposition.

THE NERO 4S

SIM2’s most high-performance machine in the game, this high-concept projector is the master of HDR reproduction. Don’t just take our word for it, listen to just a few of the comments from respected reviewers around the globe. In popular U.S tile Widescreen Review, Doug Blackburn, perhaps the most detailed reviewer on the planet, said, “...The Nero 4S is one of the most satisfying UHD/HDR projectors I’ve used at any price.” Respected UK based reviewer John Archer for Home Cinema Choice, said, “During my audition, it routinely delivered far and away the most compelling, detailed and dynamic 4K HDR experience I’ve seen from any consumer PJ.” The Nero 4S of course has the latest Live Colours Calibration software to take its impressive

performance curves to even greater heights. Other stand out features include the 6,000 ANSI-lumens delivered onto the screen for unprecedented performance and flexibility. Also on-board are 75% vertical and 35% horizontal lens shift abilities, and four different HDR presets created during installation which perfectly adjusts the HDR processing to different screen sizes. The motorised zoom and focus deliver 10 individual lens memories for various image formats. Featuring Texas Instruments’ best chip for HDR 8.3 million different pixels can be displayed. Outstanding reliability is also a feature of this machine which is now installed into our Reference Cinema demo suite in the SIM2 HDR Dual System for the ultimate in image production. Basically, in this configuration, one unit delivers the brightness and the other concentrates on colour. A luxury, minimal but elegant crystal glass cabinet strongly suggests the high-quality contained inside. Come and witness this imaging marvel for yourself and we are convinced you will love the Nero 4S as much as huge SIM2 fan Francis Ford Coppola who has the projector in his home. If it’s good enough for the Director of the Godfather, its probably an offer too good to refuse. Get in contact today and become a SIM2 believer. Pulse Cinemas pulsecinemas.com

ESSENTIAL LIGHT AND LIGHTING CONTROL

INTEGRATED EXPECTATIONS Stuart Dantzic, Managing Director of Caribbean Blinds, answers some of the key questions facing the ambient light and lighting control sector. What do you feel are the major trends and technical advances experienced by the sector in recent times? Without a doubt, technology - being able to seamlessly operate your lighting from different brands and in different areas of the home and garden from a single source (app). This means allowing the lighting to work harmoniously with each other; there is a lot of demand and expectation from customers. As a society, we have become very ‘push button’ and expect to be able to control everything from one device, whether by physically pressing buttons or using voice control. Customers now expect technology to be more integrated and increasingly looking to create different scenarios. For example, when they are dining outside, they might expect their pergola lights to switch onto 80%, the border lighting to turn on to 50% and the water feature light to turn on to 100% while the interior lights in the adjacent room dim to 20% and all other lights switch off. That’s where we are heading.

42 SEPTEMBER 2021

What will change for the future? Lighting tech will integrate with other technology to create a holistic approach. Using the lighting example above, there will be additional expectations for the ‘outdoor dining’ experience. As well as the lighting set to different levels in different parts of the home and garden, the outdoor speakers will turn on and automatically play a pre-selected song or playlist, with the volume set to a level of choice that can be adjusted at will. The water feature will start running and the automatic side screens of the pergola will lower for privacy and protection from the weather, all creating the ultimate alfresco dining experience with almost no effort from the customer.

How big a part can lighting/ambient lighting control play in making homes more efficient for example. I think that it will play a considerable part. Automated lighting reduces excessive lighting use by ensuring lights are switched off in areas

that are not being used, thus saving energy. The latest update in our tech at Caribbean Blinds is the bi-directional technology which allows customers to control their outdoor shading systems but also works across the lighting and heating systems from anywhere via an app on their Smartphone, even setting the percentage that you want your lights to be working at and in which parts of the house and garden. This means, for example, that if you are in the kitchen, you can set all other lights in the house to switch off or reduce their output. This plays a big part in reducing energy consumption and making homes more efficient. However, equally as important is that having lighting set accordingly creates a comfortable environment that is better for our health; it is kinder to our eyes by not being so bright and can even help to reduce stress levels as the atmosphere feels more relaxing if the lighting is right. These benefits are not just about saving energy but also looking after our wellbeing.

44 SEPTEMBER 2021

Five years ago, installing an intelligent setup that linked heating, lighting, security and entertainment systems via one centralised hub seemed beyond the realms of possibility for most. A layered illumination setup that could be activated at the swipe of a button, or a security arrangement that simulated actions to make the house appear lived in, seemed to be reserved for tech-savvy homeowners with big budgets to spend. The general public

weren’t really aware of the possibilities of a smart home back then. Home automation as it was referred to, was widely perceived as expensive, over complicated, and likely to go wrong. Today, the picture couldn’t be more different. The influx of DIY Wi-Fi-controlled systems and devices that link easily to a smart phone has made smart tech much more accessible. Adverts for wireless retrofit or DIY products like Hive and Nest have made people realise they can control their homes whilst away. The proliferation of voice assistants (Alexa, Google etc) has allowed homeowners to easily integrate their lighting and entertainment streaming services. For example, the Phillips Hue range of smart illumination products offers a selection of simple-to-install solutions, with prices starting at less than £20. Plus, they can easily be linked to whichever voice assistant you are using to create a simple DIY smart setup. The possibility of saving energy (not to mention money on bills) by incorporating an efficient heating and lighting system is another benefit that homeowners can’t ignore. Ultimately, when we discuss smart tech advances in the last five years, the main difference is our shift in mentality.

ESSENTIAL LIGHT AND LIGHTING CONTROL

What are the biggest innovations? Standalone smart devices that homeowners can install themselves have worked wonders in terms of opening people’s eyes to what’s possible. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what can be achieved of course. In a post-pandemic world, where people have become more reliant on connectivity, smart tech will be called upon to deliver more than basic functionality, as homeowners strive to create a seamless system that flawlessly unites heating, lighting, entertainment and more. “These fast-moving consumer devices which rely on global cloud services are ill-suited to the critical functions in the home – lighting, heating and security,” says Darren Palmer, director of marketing and sales at smart home manufacturer Baulogic. “People want to be effortlessly connected to their homes at all times and wired systems provide the required reliability, as well as securing long-term value and future-proofing the house.” One major area of innovation has been the tool with which we can now interact with our smart home systems, thanks to intuitive controls. The Niko Digital Black, for instance, provides a user-friendly wall display that allows you to operate lighting, heating, ventilation, rooflights, shading and music – all from a single interface. Such powerful yet simple control removes the requirement for lots of individual touch panels cluttering your surfaces. As many homeowners move towards an open-plan layout, where kitchens, living rooms and dining areas link to one another, (rather than being closed off), smart tech can help to integrate these zones more effectively. If the installation was wired conventionally, this would mean lots of switches on the wall, as there might need to be 10 to 15 lighting circuits covering the whole area, not to mention blind/curtain and heating controls. With Niko Home Control, the Digital Black can combine all these switches into one 83mm x 83mm intuitive touch screen where moods and scenes can easily be established.

MANAGING DIFFERENT SPACES FOR MULTIPLE USE CASE SCENARIOS

ASSISTED LIVING & PROMOTING WELLNESS

Unfortunately, none of us know what the future holds, and whether ailments in older age might mean mobility issues. One thing that is for sure is that though in our heads, we may still feel 21, our bodies might not feel the same. Living an independent life at home for longer is key and by making use of Apps and Voice Control, can help achieve this. The ‘connected home’ will not only make your life more comfortable by use of lighting control (as well as the other integrated functions within the smart home), but with a video entry system… that flashes lights… and possibly pauses music… can only be a good thing. Activating a panic function, or saying ‘Alexa, I need help’, can unlock your door, flash your lights and send a notification to a family member, is all possible. One recent installation carried out by a Niko installer, for a disabled lady who prior to this, needed full time, live-in carers reported, “Amazing! Niko Home Control has changed my whole way of living and has allowed me a relatively normal life within my own home.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

In the last few years, the use of smart tech has expanded from the abodes of tech enthusiasts and early adopters to include the average homeowner. Over the next decade, this shift is set to carry on, especially amongst retirees. A smart house can mean living an independent life at home for longer, saving tens of thousands on care home costs. Prices have come down, too, which will continue to make smart tech more affordable for those who are keen to incorporate it. The way in which we physically interact with smart home technologies is likely to change, too, with innovations that’ll allow multiple surfaces throughout the home to become touchscreens or displays. The experience will become increasingly convenient and more immersive.

Some people think that smart lighting is just for the main habitable areas ie the kitchen and living room, but for those who understand the benefits fully, Smart Lighting is actually for the whole home, inside and out! Bathroom lights that turn on at 100% in the evening but only 10% in the small hours. Lights that in a child’s bedroom turn off automatically if left on. All lights turn off when the ‘leaving the house’ button is pressed. Outdoor motion detectors that illuminate drives and pathways late at night. Lights that turn on if the fire alarm activates. Presence simulation when you’re not in, where lights turn on and off as if you are in the house still, even though you’re out. The list is endless. Likewise, when using Niko motion detectors, these can act as security detectors when you’re not in and if used in an elderly person’s home, can report no movement in the home at a certain time, to give the family chance to check if an elderly relative is ok.

ESSENTIAL LIGHT AND LIGHTING CONTROL

The changes are seamless, with no annoying sudden changes or requirements to alter the lighting once set up. Ideal for where a space requires a constant light for concentration, such as a study, or where an area receives a lot of footfall, such as a kitchen or hallway, Daylight Mode from Savant has enabled installers the ability to not only supply lighting but also to help customers with their wellbeing. When integrating these solutions with home automation, many systems now work over LAN networks and utilise the wiring infrastructure to set-up, control and fault-find. Making the installation significantly more straight-forward than ever before, installers are also now able to dial into a customer’s system remotely to check and/or fix any issues. This is a very cost-effective way to offer customer support. Most systems are also able to link in with other smart home devices by offering relatively straight-forward integration with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home Kit for basic voice control. However, the more sophisticated systems require their own proprietary set up software but, once configured, can still be controlled by off-theshelf VR devices.

THE OPTIONS

Fundamentally, the choices are limitless and every integrator should be discussing lighting options with their clients. With the adaptation of the smartphone/tablet and smart home devices as control interfaces, consumers are

getting used to using their devices to control and/or monitor their homes more than ever, such as with smart heating control (Nest, Hive etc), with lighting becoming the obvious next opportunity. In particular, as the retro-fitting of systems is now relatively simple and requires minimal disruption and installation, this is a great revenue opportunity for any installer, particularly as some manufactures now offer wireless solutions that incorporate battery technology that can last up to five years. I believe that as customers become more aware of the possibilities open to them, they

will be very open to investigating how light plays such a roll in the home. Crucially, installers need to educate themselves on what is available and how the different systems will suit particular properties. This knowledge, combined with the ability to educate the customer, will be a major factor over the coming years, with those installers that see lighting as an opportunity to increase their business, reaping the benefits. ESSENTIAL LIGHT AND LIGHTING CONTROL

LIGHTING: BALANCE IS EVERYTHING As a home automation professional, you know (almost) everything there is to know about luminaires, Kelvin, light output, dimming, lighting control, up lighters, chandeliers, and everything in between. So it’s easy to forget that the best form of light is daylight. Well, unless you recently had the experience “I had while on vacation!” Phillip Pini, Director Residential Sales UK at Crestron, explains. During the summer, I spent some days in a rental. The house was luxurious and fun, but also frustrating on a personal and professional level; because it had automated blinds and skylights that needed to be controlled by at least four different devices. And of course, they didn’t work properly. So, there were days where I just decided to keep the blinds closed and turn on the lights. Which isn’t smart because it meant blocking out natural daylight, which is paramount for your health and wellbeing - nor very efficient. Our body needs UV-B rays to be able to produce vitamin D. On top of that, research shows that daylight helps establish a healthy circadian rhythm. This isn’t really an issue during a short break, but when it comes to a house where your client spends lots of time, perhaps even is working from home, it’s essential to have a system that considers not only the electric lighting and control, but also the control of daylight. Ideally it automates the combined control of shades and lighting. Let’s say your client has some nice, big windows in their home where the sunlight comes in. When the sun is shining, their home system

50 SEPTEMBER 2021

might be smart enough to know that it doesn’t need to turn the lights on or that it might want to dim the lights. However, when the sunlight is streaming in and the shades are up, its not only letting the sunlight in, but also the heat. Even with triple glazed windows with film on the back, nothing is stopping some form of solar heat gain. If you made the home automation system truly smart, the blinds lower enough so the room doesn’t overheat, while keeping some natural light to allow dimming the lights. Obviously, shades and shade control do not solve everything, especially not in a country where it rains more often than there is sunshine. The lighting design is one of the most important elements of the home, after the physical structure itself. Lighting can make or break the house and the way the homeowner feels. Yet, homeowners seem to think that a decent system will be expensive, resulting in a situation where they are willing to spend thousands of pounds for a chandelier which they control from a standard light switch. To convince them, it often suffices to talk about how recent developments in lighting

and lighting control are increasingly boosting efficiency. About a decade ago, luminaires were made more efficient with the introduction of LED. Now, lights do not need to be on their highest level with a control system as we are able to achieve a nice, fine balance and level things out, which means more efficiency and less energy consumed. DALI as a protocol allows each lamp to be controlled independently or in groups, so the homeowner can make features out of tables or artwork. Since all control is in the balast, the homeowner saves room on multiple dimmers within an enclosure. And the absence of resistant dimming diminishes the amount of heat gain. DMX is on the rise too. It has even more channels available than DALI, which means that colour phases can be programmed so that the solar tracking can be automatically followed. And of course, it doesn’t hurt if you can offer a true lifetime warranty on all lighting and window treatment hardware where critical pieces are always available, making the process of swapping failing items almost instantaneous.

HAVE WE LEARNED ANYTHING DURING THE LAST 18 MONTHS? High-performance and specialisation are the key components to find success beyond 2021 says Kevin Kelly, MD of Atlas Cables. The consciousness of all consumers has been enlightened over the last 18 months; Worldwide viral pandemic, global warming, trade disruptions etc all add to the insecurity of the future. Surely these transformational topics have raised an understanding in our industry that we can’t continue as before, where competition driven by price delivers insecure, unstable outcomes. The best customers demand performance, security of compliant leading design and an enhanced lifestyle that we, as specialists can deliver. Being a performance led project business is like being a bespoke manufacturer for your customer, delivering guaranteed quality and consistency of your approach is critical. The weakest component selection in your design defines the overall delivered quality and establishes and reinforces your company values to all your staff. The interconnections between functional blocks are usually where performance is supported or lost and cable and plug choice as well as tools selection are critical decisions that should not be driven by the cheapest option. We often get lost in the myriad of technical details, for example the advance from 18 to 48Gbps Video processing, copper to fibre etc without assessing what’s the best implementation of new standards, how much headroom is there in

the solution we are proposing to our customers, what about long-term performance? Often, it’s the superficial specification and the cheapest price that drives on to the quotation as we try and second guess customer response. Customers need more education to allow them to choose wisely - they absolutely want value for money! However, it’s their money not yours and for them to decide they simply need all the pertinent information. What if you wanted to buy something and the sales guy judged your financial capability and didn’t offer you the best they had to offer? You would be incensed, so offering the best cabling infrastructure is a must. When you install an in-ceiling or in-wall speaker with a bare conductor, the sound quality of the installation will deteriorate over time. Were you aware of the issue surrounding cable oxidisation and increasing contact resistance? What If you decide, for example, to fit Atlas OFC Metik crimps to every connection (costs very little) to protect the delivered sound quality of an installation over time. What if you informed the customer about these small but very important details, how do you think they would view you and your business over the competition? What about the effect on your staff and their implementation of your values on site? Remember values are what you won’t do (fit bare wires) not what you say you will do.

THE KNX BUS: CABLING JOB DONE! Just one cable and a mains supply? Too good to be true? “Not with KNX” argues the communication platform. The growing KNX market is enthusiastically backed by over 500 different manufacturers; offering thousands of products between them, and is now simply too big to miss out on – and the KNX cable bus is the backbone of the solutions you can create. There can be little doubt that the future of installations is in the seamless integration where the KNX communications standard leads the way. KNX is the world’s only truly open communication standard for home and building control, surely the obvious choice for integration and control of multiple systems. Flexible KNX solutions integrate certified products from multiple manufacturers, with all the devices communicating using one common language with the single signature green cable that is the KNX bus as the system’s backbone. KNX certified devices are configured and programmed using the KNX ETS software, and can be combined to manage and co-ordinate

60 SEPTEMBER 2021

multiple applications: intelligent lighting, blinds and shutters, HVAC, security systems, energy management, audio, video, white goods etc. KNX-based systems can be controlled locally in the home, or from anywhere in the world, making remote monitoring and preventive maintenance easier for installers and building managers. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of interest in the potential for KNX solutions to provide robust and reliable assisted living services. KNX cable is RF- and EMF-shielded so it is run alongside the mains supply, making onsite installation even easier, the KNX bus cable in particular. The KNX standard also supports Ethernet (KNX IP) and radio (KNX RF), which can be combined to create the ideal custom solution for any project combining lighting, heating, metering, AV and many other functions. However, the backbone is the KNX cable bus. Think of the KNX bus as the main central nervous system for intelligent automation. The

bus cable is routed to all devices and systems on the network: sensors/actuators, controllers, power supply units and keypads, as well as application specific gateways such as DALI 2, Philips Hue, BACnet, Savant or Control4 and Modbus (increasingly popular for heat pumps and AC projects. The most commonly-used green KNX bus cable is complemented by a white version (for running round skirting boards etc), armoured and duct versions for outdoor use or where UV protection is needed, and a smaller, lighter single-pair option.

TOGETHER FOR CINEMA

A CINEMA TO REMEMBER A new report submitted to EI by Together For Cinema (TFC) founder Ian Morrish, covers this ambitious cinema project carried out for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice by Bespoke Home Cinemas. hearts, hearing the pleasure and joy it will bring to the children and families makes all the time and effort worthwhile.” TFC Kit List Supporters DONATED AWE Europe (General): Ongoing support and assistance in securing the required items Cinema Build Systems (Screen): Halo screen with LED surround Collingwood Lighting (Lighting): 16 x H2 pro lights Control4 (Control): EA1 and an SR260 remote control The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice located in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire is a pioneering children’s hospice that never stops looking for new and better ways to support local children and their families. For such an ambitious organisation, the provision of a cinema had to also go the extra mile and this is where Bespoke Home Cinemas enters the scene in partnership with Together For Cinema (TFC). TFC is fortunate to have Melanie Malcolm, Director of Bespoke Home Cinemas, sitting on it’s Steering Committee and Melanie’s business is based in Leeds. So, when TFC was contacted in January 2020 by one of Forget Me Not’s team it was an easy match and Melanie committed for her team to take the installation on. COVID prevented any chances of getting together at the beginning of 2020. However, by the end of summer there was a little more confidence and Melanie, along with her Husband Gifford Malcom, Managing Director of Bespoke Home Cinemas, were able to visit Forget Me Not and view the proposed room for the installation in September of 2020. After a discussion the design was approved and an ambitious kit list was drawn up. This included star lighting effects, 4K projector, a new (first in production) state of the art halo cinema screen with LED surround, motorised blinds and acoustic fabric walls. The install was spread over a three-week period due to other installation works scheduled by Bespoke, but the actual installation took

only six physical working days! The team really put in the extra hours to turn this room around whilst taking into consideration the day-to-day operations within the hospice environment. On August 6 the Hospice hosted a cinema room opening, wedged between various scheduled film screenings for the children. Industry colleagues from Epson, HD Connectivity, OneAV and Cinema Build Systems, as well as others who were involved as part of the hospice attended. The demo provided by Gifford Malcolm was really impressive and reflected all the hard work that was put in to make the room as great as it is. Ian, Melanie and Luen Thompson, the CEO of Forget Me Not, all said a few words. Luen said, “This year we’re celebrating 10 years since our hospice was built. Being able to mark this incredible milestone with a fantastic state-of-the-art cinema room is something we could never have imagined. Many of our families cannot go to public cinemas because of their child’s condition and so miss out on this uniquely wonderful experience. That we can now bring the magic of the movies to them right here at the hospice means the world to all of us.” Melanie added, “We have always wanted to donate one of our cinema rooms to a worthy cause and after recently celebrating our 25th year in business and Forget Me Not Hospice celebrating their 10th Birthday it’s a very special gift from us to them! COMPANY FOCUS: PMC

SLEEK AND SLIM The PMC ci series has quickly established itself as a versatile range of speakers that are equally at home in home cinema installations and professional Dolby Atmos studios. Chief Technical Officer Oliver Thomas brings EI up to speed with the development of the range and, in particular, the ci90slim. The range has made a name for itself really quickly since it launched. What’s the secret that makes it so special? There’s no secret, just good engineering principles and 30 years of design experience in both the home and professional markets. The ci series builds on our core technologies - the Advanced Transmission Line and Laminair, and presents them in a format that is suited to use in home cinemas and multi-speaker studios.

How does professional use translate into the home cinema market? There isn’t a sound for the studio and a sound for the home - the same speaker should be suitable for use in both. The form factor of the ci series makes them perfect for use in mix rooms and in home cinemas, where they can be mounted in or on the walls to reproduce the audio exactly as it sounded in the studio.

Apart from the ATL and Laminair what other features of the ci series make them stand out from the crowd? We designed the Qikfire in-wall mounting system to make installation very simple and, for on-wall mounting, the optional on-wall kit provides pin-point level adjustment. Each speaker in the range, apart from the large flagship ci140, can be used in-wall or on-wall – this gives great flexibility. We also engineered the cabinets fully sealed at the rear, so there is almost no sound leakage into the adjoining room as they don’t rely on the cavity wall to act as the enclosure.

Tell us about the ci90slim – how did this model come about? The ci90 slim is a super-slim design, making it suited to retrofit in-wall installations where the studwork wall is not being built from new, and for installations that use a flat panel TV and require a speaker to complement the screen. There’s no compromise in sound quality. It shares the drive units and acoustic design principles of the other models to provide the absolute clarity and dynamics that PMC is famous for.

What are the performance benefits of the ci90slim over other similarly sized speakers? Thanks to the ATL and Laminair, the ci90slim punches well above its weight in terms bass performance. It’s deep, dynamic and extremely well defined, and that’s at all levels. We spend an enormous amount of time ensuring that all our models have an exceptionally wide, uniform, dispersion, which is essential to create a large, natural sounding sound field.

How would you sum up the ci90slim? The performance of most speakers is governed by their size, limiting the experience for the user when smaller speakers are employed. By combining our tried and tested technologies with cutting edge design and installer friendly features, the ci90slim finally enables people to enjoy the full audio experience from a more compact speaker. It’s the best of both worlds – power, performance and home friendly aesthetics.

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY: CINEMA@HOME

SYNCHRONICITY CINEMA! Cinema@Home has a created a cracking new home cinema demonstration space, based in the same building that a commercial cinema began nearly a century ago. Cinema@Home is based in Market Harborough, Leicestershire and specialises in feature home cinema rooms. Although Cinema@Home is a relatively new business, this husband-and-wife team of Ben and Thanya Hobbs already have extensive experience having run a home cinema and smart home company. Their previous venture was in in Phuket, Thailand for 17 years; building cinemas, audio and lighting systems into luxury villas and properties throughout Thailand and SE Asia. Ben and Thanya moved back to the UK in February 2020 to open a company specialising in home cinemas just as the COVID pandemic got serious. All the plans for the new business had to be put on hold. However, as things

started opening again - the hunt was on for premises and an old barn in the middle of Market Harborough was identified, which looked ideal. Unbeknown at the time, the property turned out to have been part of an old cinema complex first opened almost exactly a century ago. Named ‘The Oriental Cinema’, the place had been designed with dragons & scrolls, and painted panels in the auditorium - depicting palm trees and oasis scenes, the history gave the project some added spice and was a pleasing piece of synchronicity for the building’s new lease of life. Company MD, Ben, explains, “The original plan was to build a demo room/workshop in the open area of the barn. However, it was cold, damp and too large and irregular to be

able to control the sound as we wanted. We needed to be able to demonstrate the cinema at reference levels, during the day, without upsetting the neighbours, so it made sense to build something completely from scratch that would make this possible.” Ben’s brother Chris also works in the family business and is an expert carpenter, so the team got to work and created their plans for constructing a ‘building within a building’ to deliver the demonstration space needed. Ben adds, “Conceptual plans were drawn up showing what we wanted to accomplish, we knew we wanted a star-filled ceiling, an office area, big solid double doors and the space needed to be isolated and soundproofed as much as possible.”

Ben getting hands on as the cinema takes shape

Knowing the importance of strong partnerships with suppliers, Ben had started a relationship with Pulse Cinemas very early, in fact even before the move back to the UK. The early planning was done hand in hand with Pulse Cinemas. Sales Manager, Simon Schino explains, “Following an on-line meeting Ben visited Pulse Cinemas HQ and took the full tour of our demo premises. Ben made it clear he wanted to create a very special demonstration space and we were able to build up a picture of exactly what was needed product wise once we established the performance objectives Cinema@Home wanted to reach.”

CREATING A ROOM WITHIN A ROOM

Starting from the ground up - 6x2 boards were used to frame out the 8mx4m floor, with a gap of 40cm between joists. Noggins were spaced every metre to give the floor rigidity.

Ben explains, “We needed to make sure the floor was completely flat. Laser measurements were taken across the floor and piers were put in every metre. The floor has over 240 piers holding it up ensuring it is flat and even. Rockwool was placed between the floor joists to trap sound waves and deaden vibrations. The rockwool also helps insulate the room from the cold concrete floor. A bitumen layer was also laid between the joists and floorboards to help decouple them.” The walls studs are 4x2 timber and framed with OSB or MDF, which are of different thickness each side, to help tame resonance. The walls were built in sections and then lifted into place and lined with rockwool. The ceiling joists are 8x2 timber. Each piece of timber for the entire build was screwed instead of nailed wherever possible – Chris being very aware of how nails can potentially squeak and creek. Vicoustic acoustic treatment has been used throughout the interior as well as rockwool based mounted acoustic panels in grey and white for the adjoining office. To limit sound coming in as well as out of the cinema room, acoustic seals were fitted to the door and Koldlok grommets were used for the cable entry points. Ben adds, “The acoustic seals for the door included Batwings, an L shaped seal that is attached to the surface of the door frame. The edge of the door meets the seal upon closure so that gaps around the door are minimised and sound is kept out and in. This also helps give the cinema room a low ambient noise level. It’s easier to hear what’s happening in films and the speakers don’t need to be pushed to their limits.” A CinemaBuild Systems Fabric tracking system was utilised to mount a black velvet surround to the screen and front stage, whilst the same tracking system mounts acoustically transparent fabric walls either side of the cinema. A plush, charcoal colour, flecked carpet was laid throughout and kicked up one foot around the edges of the cinema room.

THE AV LINE-UP

Ben explains, “Engineering the room for performance and value was important. Two things were taken into consideration, there would be no weak links and no superfluous equipment.” Paradigm speakers were chosen with the Paradigm Pro P1 for the front stage Left, Centre, Right and surround speakers. Paradigm Pro IC6.5 are used for the four Atmos overhead speakers and two Paradigm X12 subs drive the bass in a 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos configuration. The Paradigm speakers really hit the price/performance ratio that Ben was looking for. The speakers are powered expertly by an Anthem MRX 1140 and Ben loves the way Anthem’s room correction technology (ARC) works seamlessly between the amp and the Paradigm speakers taking the audio to the next level. A Kaleidescape Strato S 4K Ultra HD Movie Player feeds into the Anthem as the main source for critical viewing with a Nvidia shield providing Netflix, Disney+ and other TV Services. The projection system features the 4K Sim2 Domino projector and a Screen Research acoustically transparent screen at 127in.

Ben adds, “A cinema just isn’t a cinema without great seats. Here maximum comfort is provided by Fortress Seating motorised leather recliners in Black/McLaren Orange, which just happen to be our company colours. There are also a few orange dashes of colour around the demo room and office that help tie the aesthetics together.” The seats were sourced at a competitive price. As luck would have it, a cinema refit at Pulse Cinemas meant these items in the right colours were available. For control and automation, RTI’s T4x remote control and XP3 control system handle the whole area. Ben chose the T4x specifically because it had fewer physical buttons on the remote than rivals and more real estate is given over to the 4.0in high-resolution capacitive LCD touchscreen. All the equipment is mounted into a Sanus 27U rack which fits snugly in an alcove, cooled by a near silent trickle fan. Mood lighting is delivered via a mixture of Philips Hue with a StarScape fibre optic star-ceiling in a 3x3m configuration also in place. The star ceiling is tied into the lighting with a simple Zigbee power switch. Finally, office speakers were supplied by Gallo Acoustics with their Gallo Adiva’SE in Mclaren Orange of course.

ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY: CINEMA@HOME

CHALLENGES OF CONSTRUCTION Ben explains, “Essentially the room is a rectangular wooden box, not so different from a giant speaker. With Two X12 Defiance Paradigm subwoofers the bass is amazing, but it took some taming, which was challenging and more time consuming than initially considered. “First up was adding isolation feet to the subs, this stopped transference of resonance to the floor and out to the walls, tightening up the bass nicely. Rattles and buzzes were chased down and solved, one by one. One particularly persistent buzz which was hard to identify was eventually traced and fixed by bracing the walls with additional timber near the front corners where the subwoofers sat.” Ben enthuses, “We are really happy with how the space has turned out and have a list of customers already keen to experience the cinema space. The focus was always on performance products that offer value and everything ties together perfectly with well-matched audio and video systems. The room feels exceptional and watching a movie looks and sounds incredible. The best part is the overall balance, from the screen size, picture quality, sound levels and acoustics, it all meshes together to form a cohesive environment that feels amazing to experience.” Cinema@Home cinema-at-home.co.uk

YE CANNAE CHANGE THE LAWS OF PHYSICS! OR CAN YOU?

High performing, audio video connectivity delivered in plastic free packaging

Coax Cables

L-Acoustics has announced the launch of its newest addition to the SB lineup, the SB10i. Delivering the same sonic signature of the company’s much larger subs, but from a scaleddown enclosure, SB10i is not much larger than two side-by-side shoe boxes. “The L-Acoustics R&D teams took on the challenge of designing a low-frequency enclosure with the industry-recognised L-Acoustics sound in a living room-proportioned enclosure,” says L-Acoustics Product Manager Germain Simon. “Even though it may sound like it defies the laws of physics, our new SB10i is a brilliant realisation of that objective. It condenses the full power of an SB Series sub into an incredibly small, efficient package that will fit into any environment where a visually discreet yet high-performance system is desired.” Equipped with a single 10in driver, 27 Hz bandwidth limit, and 124 dB maximum SPL output, the high-powered SB10i measures only 21.3in L x 21.3in W x 6.7in H (540 x 540 x 170 mm) and weighs 33 pounds (15 kg). Sonically corresponding with L Acoustics X4i and 5XT ultra-compact coaxial speakers, the new sub has a discreet design and is available in RAL colours, making it a strong choice for high-end residential and commercial environments and hospitality settings, sports luxury boxes as well as museum installs, says the maker.

The SB10i is also billed as offering flexible and limitless installation possibilities. The integrated ‘tech face’ contains all connectors and mounting points in one unobtrusive panel, so mounting hardware, cables, and connectors can be hidden, regardless of where or how the SB10i is installed: freestanding on a shelf or tucked away under a couch, chair, or architectural feature. “There has been increasing demand in the residential and commercial markets for audio systems that give the same experience as being at a dynamic, vivacious live show,’” says Nick Fichte, Global Business Manager for L-Acoustics Creations. The SB10i is available for order now, with volume shipments scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2022

Redline offers its Custom Colour Cloth printing service across the range and full custom paint service for the speakers themselves

UK distributor for the brand, Redline in underlining the expanded Kin Play range from Canadian speaker creator Totem Acoustic. Offering a mix of traditional Hi-Fi quality combined with modern connectivity, the family now offers the Kin Play, Kin Play Mini, Kin Play Soundbar, The Kin Play Sub 10 and the Kin Play LINK. The Kin Play delivers an attractive active bookshelf speaker (w x h x d 180mm x 355mm x 235mm), which also offers freedom as the active 120W per channel design means there is no need to find extra space or power sources for other products. Offering the same feature set and audio ambition, is the Kin Play Mini, great for when space is at a premium with its compact dimensions (w x h x d 162mm x 270mm x 190mm). Designed to partner screens of 55in and up (w x h x d 52mm x 1200mm x115mm) the Kin Play Soundbar marries the screen to its audio output, but also delivers for audio only applications via in-built Bluetooth 5.0 Qualcomm aptX HD technology. Other connections include Optical, 3.5mm (Mini Jack), Stereo RCA and subwoofer output. The product also has its own mounting system or isolation feet. The Kin Play Sub 10, equipped with a 10in Woven Fiberglass Woofer, driven by an oversized vented magnetic structure is designed to deliver impressive dynamic capacity. MONITOR AUDIO’S SILVER SEVENTH SON Monitor Audio has released the seventh generation of its Silver Series 7G loudspeakers. Ever since the Silver Series was introduced in 1999, the company argues it has set standards where performance, finish and value for money are concerned. And with the new seventh generation, Monitor Audio claims it has put even more distance between the Silver Series and its competition. The seventh generation of the Silver Series 7G features a new, contemporary design in a choice of five finishes, numerous acoustic innovations and a model line-up extensive enough to cater for every music and home cinema requirement, says the series’ creator. The design is described as crisp, clean and distinctive. The available finishes are ‘deeply lustrous high-gloss black lacquer, equally distinctive satin white, or a choice of three real-wood veneers: Ash, Natural Walnut and Black Oak’. Looks aside, the maker says every model, from the Silver 50 7G and Silver 100 7G bookshelf/ standmount speakers, through the Silver 200 7G, Silver 300 7G and Silver 500 7G floorstanders, to the home cinema-specific Silver C250 7G centre channel, Silver FX 7G rear surround speakers and Silver AMS 7G Dolby Atmos enabled speaker, is a result of performance-led design. And each one features fresh, original engineering to deliver highquality sound.

The C-CAM gold dome tweeter design features a new Uniform Dispersion Waveguide II for lifelike, convincing treble reproduction. The new RST II mid-range and mid/bass drivers feature a more rigid profile than before, with its new hexagonal dimpled structure just one indicator of the changes to the cone and geometry structure that result in smooth, low-distortion sound. The new crossover design is an elegant solution to the problem of splitting frequency information between drivers in a smooth, controlled manner. Every seventh generation Silver Series loudspeaker also features new driver trims, minimising the appearance of the driver surround and creating a harmonious look. Monitor Audio monitoraudio.com Every floor-stander is supplied with outrigger feet with spun metal trims, developed for stability on carpeted or hard floors

SNAP ONE SETTLES IN WITH SONOS

High performing, audio video connectivity delivered in plastic free packaging

Multicore Cables

Snap One has introduced the new Binary B-260ARC Audio Return Extender developed for professionally-installed Sonos systems that allows integrators to locate a Sonos Amp up to 150 meters (492 feet) from the source TV. According to Andras Balassy, Snap One’s Senior Business Development Manager for Control & Entertainment, Binary worked with Sonos to make the popular wireless audio system even easier to integrate by allowing the Sonos Amp to be located virtually anywhere within a home. “Snap One is always looking for ways to help our partners meet the demands of clients with new products that simplify and expand the functionality or use cases with systems like Sonos,” Andras comments. “The new Audio Return Extender allows for Dolby 5.1, DTS 5.1 and two-channel LPCM audio signals to be sent from a TV to a Sonos Amp up to 492 feet away, which is perfect for professionally-installed home AV systems where components are often located in rooms far from the TV.” The B-260-ARC Audio Return Extender consists of a transmitter and a receiver and enables integrators to use either SPDIF or HDMI ARC to transmit audio content from a remote TV back to a centrally located amplifier. The units can be powered by HDMI, USB or 110V connections and each unit features a DIP switch to determine

whether signal is being sent through S/PDIF or HDMI ARC. For the longest runs, Cat5e cable or higher is required. The B-260-ARC supports CEC pass-through between the HDMI ARC input and output to handshake and transmit. “Amp was designed to provide dealers with a simple and easy solution to integrate TV sound into architecturally stunning installations and we’re always looking for ways to offer even more flexibility,” says Benji Rappoport, Director of Product Management for Architectural at Sonos. “Snap One has deep expertise in installation and product design and it has been inspiring to work with their team as they deliver this solution to the installer community.” Snap One snapone.com

the L52 classic delivers ‘big sound that must be heard to be believed’. Following on the heels on the larger L100 Classic and L82 Classic models, the compact L52 Classic boasts a size that allows it to work in a variety of applications from stand-mount, to bookshelf, to tabletop, to wall-mount. The appearance of the L52 Classic echoes that of its larger siblings with a walnut wood veneer enclosure and a Quadrex

foam grille available in a choice of black, blue, or orange. Designed as a scaled-down version of the award-winning L82 Classic, the L52 Classic is a two-way design using a 0.75in titanium dome tweeter mated to an acoustic lens waveguide and a 5.25in white cone, cast-frame woofer. A premium crossover network design is in place to offer optimum system performance, while a front panel HF level attenuator allows the sound to be tailored to its environment. Enclosure tuning is bass-reflex via a front-firing tuned port and a set of binding post speaker terminals provide a secure connection to speaker cables. The enclosure is finished in walnut wood veneer and includes a pair of threaded inserts on the rear panel for use with third-party wall mount brackets. Bass is described as powerful, sound is dynamic, and the soundstage presentation is large, allowing the loudspeakers to disappear into the room. For those who do not have the space for the larger Classic Series models, the L52 Classic doesn’t sacrifice big sound for its small size says the maker. JBL Synthesis jblsynthesis.com
