MAKE TIME FOR MEDITATION

Something that is close to EI’s heart is the importance of finding strategies to cope with life and achieve a level of happiness and contentment that makes waking up every day a joy, rather than something less welcoming. Mediation has been a constant companion in many phases of EI’s life, sometimes simply as a way of maintaining a calm and useful mind and other times as a way of exploring realms inside (and perhaps even outside) of the mind! However, for the purposes of this comment, we are going to talk about using meditation in a simple way to make life and work easier, rather than getting too deep.

The earliest documented records that mention meditation involve a school called Vedantism, a Hindu tradition in India. The earliest recordings of this practice come from around 1500 BCE. Arguments differ, but many historians believe that meditation was practiced before this time, perhaps as early as 3000 BCE. Who really knows? Taking time to reflect and assess where a person is in their life and relationships, may be as old as humanity itself, even if more formal ways of achieving this came later.

There are literally thousands of schools of meditation - you could argue there are as many ways of meditating as there are people doing it - but if this is something that you feel might be of help in your life, EI recommends trying a few. Always keep in mind that you never reach the end of this journey, there are always new things and ways of mediating to learn. EI has been meditating regularly for many years and sometimes feels like it’s just the start

of the journey. The human mind and our responses to what happens around us and to those we care about are as myriad as it is possible to imagine and probably more than that, as of course we don’t know what we don’t know!

IT’S REALLY EASY, JUST GIVE IT A TRY

We hear a lot these days about work-life balance, wellness etc, and sometimes this can sound a little ethereal and undefined; how do we head towards these desirable destinations? Is it suited to me, my lifestyle and how I feel about who I am? The answer to this is that despite there being some useful techniques to try that are easy to learn, there is no ‘wrong’ way to do it. It will be unique to you and that is the power of it. If this all sounds a little ‘soft’: How does it work? Is it like exercise? I work a muscle, and it gets better, stronger, right?’ Well, sort of, but the key to good mediation in EI’s experience is to not try too ‘hard’. Getting the most benefit involves learning to ‘gently’ train the mind to access a calmer, less stressed world. Remember that is there all the time, we just forget because we are ‘busy’ with the material world around us. It can be tricky, but when mediating, the best results come when we simply relax and allow the mind to gently travel in the direction we have asked it to. Don’t force it and a calmer mind will come. The benefits vary from a better organised work and home life, a more positive outlook, a boost in energy, and generally a calmer and more measured approach to life. Try it for just 10 mins a day; the blue sky is always there, our thoughts and troubles are just clouds getting in the way.

HUMANS TO POWER BUILDING AUTOMATION!

A new study shows that graphene-based ‘TENGs’ could finally unlock nature’s wasted energy. Scientists may have finally found a solution to effectively harvesting energy from humans into electrical energy.

Researchers from the Institute of Thin Films, Sensors and Imaging (ITFSI) from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) explored the use of the 3D graphene foam material Gii by Integrated Graphene as an active layer in an energy generator (known as a TENG).

The investigation aimed to transform mechanical energy wasted in nature into electrical energy that could be used to power small electronic devices and sensors in the global market for Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

The research, published in ScienceDirect, shows that the force of a human footprint on a pressure-sensitive mat, equipped with Gii-

TENG sensors, can produce enough energy to anonymously identify people entering or leaving a room. As well as providing a low-cost and energy-efficient solution to monitoring building occupancy, the mats could also help to optimise energy resources by, for example, controlling room temperature upon entrance or exit.

The researchers says the findings of this study will be of particular interest to schools and universities who could employ the technology to link the measurement of room occupancy to a ventilating system and a CO2 monitor, reducing the volume of CO2 which has been shown to reduce the ability to focus. However, the implications for the residential and light commercial markets could also be interesting.

Mechanical energy is one of the most abundant and versatile energy sources available in nature. For around 20 years, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been investigated as a technique for converting mechanical energy from our daily actions into usable electrical energy which can power both small IoT electronic devices and sensors but also more power-hungry items such as electric cars and drones. There are a few examples such as rocker switches providing energy sources, but until now, the use of this type of energy has been relatively limited.

CYRUS AUDIO ANNOUNCES UK DISTRIBUTION PARTNERSHIP WITH AUDIO PHYSIC

German loudspeaker manufacturer Audio Physic has entered into a partnership with Cyrus Audio to distribute its range of high-end loudspeakers, as it looks to grow its business in the UK.

Audio Physic claims to be the first speaker manufacturer to use ceramic foam, showing that glass is not a ‘taboo’ material. The brand’s loudspeakers are still developed and manufactured by hand in Brilon, in the Sauerland region of Germany.

“We are delighted to have found a strong partner and longtime friend with Cyrus Audio in the UK,” said Thomas Saheicha, Managing Director of Audio Physic.

“Both brands are not only a perfect match in terms of technology, but also in terms of philosophy. The combination of Cyrus Audio electronics and Audio Physic speakers can be found in many living rooms and have been enjoyed by our customers for years. As we move forward with Cyrus, we would

like to say a big thank you to Elite Audio, which has been an integral part of our growth plans in the UK, and we are very happy that it will remain one of our key retailers in the UK.”

Nick Clarke, Managing Director of Cyrus Audio, added, “We have joined forces with Audio Physic at several shows in Europe, for some time now. As well as our shared philosophy in extensive research and development, we both place importance on developing and manufacturing our products within our respective home countries. So, when discussions started with regards to Cyrus distributing Audio Physic in the UK, it made perfect sense that such a partnership would only strengthen both brands as we both approach 40 years of building high-end audio products.”

SNAP ONE INNOVATIONS MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR INTEGRATORS

Mark Reynolds, Vice President & General Manager EMEA for Snap One, shares all the important brand and product news from the ground-breaking company whose mission is to make life easier for integrators.

The Snap One ecosystem is anchored on two awardwinning technology platforms, Control4 smart home OS 3 and OvrC remote management. By strengthening this core ecosystem, we are providing a robust base for integrators to build amazing end-to-end projects for their customers.

IN CONTROL

In the past year, key innovations have included major improvements to the Control4 platform which,

according to current research*, is ranked as the #1 most specified and installed brand by 50% of UK integrators and is placed in the top three by two-thirds of integrators for whole-house integrated control systems.

Control4 smart home OS 3 is the operating system for smart homes, designed to unify hundreds of connected devices within the home into one intuitive, user-friendly and easily personalised experience. OvrC is our free, cloud-based remote management platform designed

16 SEPTEMBER 2023 ESSENTIAL SNAP ONE /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

exclusively for professionals and including one of the largest ecosystems of integrated products from both Snap One and leading third-party manufacturers.

Every Control4 OS 3 system can now be remotely managed using OvrC, without the need for additional hardware. Its a huge benefit for integrators.

Another notable improvement to the Control4 portfolio includes the launch of Control4 Vibrant Linear Lighting. This extensive new range gives partners a complete product line to create sophisticated lighting experiences. With LED tape in a full selection of white, tuneable white, colour, and colour + tuneable white options alongside a host of accessories, integrators can now provide a richer and attractively layered lighting experience that can enrich customers homes and lifestyles. Control4 vibrant linear lighting can also be tuned to match the circadian rhythm of natural light to help enhance their comfort and wellbeing, creating new business opportunities for integrators too.

We’ve also introduced our exciting Control4 series of Halo remotes. The Halo model is a beautiful remote that feels good in the hand, has an intuitive button layout perfect for onehanded operation, and is highly customisable. With its premium brushed-aluminium chassis, the Halo Touch includes important feedbackdriven features, such as, an innovative voice button, a full suite of backlit buttons, and WiFi 2.4 and 5ghz support with an advanced antenna array giving a signal that’s up to five times stronger.

LOUDSPEAKERS

Other Snap One brands have also seen significant investment over the past twelve months.

Building on the renowned audio heritage of the Triad brand, our new Triad PDX architectural speakers ensure incredible performance married to simple and very efficient installation. Eight high quality in-ceiling and three in-wall speakers feature in this range and incorporate PushLock technology, so that partners can install these loudspeakers quickly and easilyeven changing the motor unit without needing to remove the cradle.

We have also taken a major step forward in outdoor solutions with Episode Radiance. This is a first-of-its-kind entertainment system

combining lighting and audio onto a single two conductor wire. As a modular family of outdoor grade speakers complete with low voltage lighting and accessories, Episode Radiance has everything you need to bring high quality entertainment to the outdoor spaces of your customers at the same time as improving safety, security, and the overall aesthetics of their property.

POWER MANAGEMENT AND SECURITY

We’re excited about the new opportunities in power management that we have brought to the market with the international launch of our WattBox brand. This range extends from 2-outlet ultra-compact Wi-Fi models to 12-outlet vertical solutions to present a range of solutions to suit different applications. WattBox adds further value by making the integration experience easier and better over the Control4 platform, whilst

The net promoter score is the world’s leading metric for measuring customer loyalty. It comes from the question, “How likely is it that you would recommend (insert company or product/service) to a friend or colleague?” The NPS of our Control4 automation programmer class is an astoundingly high 100%, an unheardof attainment, a figure generated from 100% of the participants surveyed for their feedback.

We also offer industry-leading support for our customers. In Snap One’s partner rewards programme, partners earn on every purchase. The programme features five levels, with benefits including progressively larger rebates, free shipping, and new product adoption credits.

Snap One bangs the industry drum with consumers too. Our #C4yourself campaign promotes Control4 certified showrooms and encourages people to visit and experience Control4.

increasing the functionality of OvrC. Meanwhile, weve successfully introduced easy to deploy surveillance devices from our ClareVision and Luma brands to help grow business in security installation and integration. Both ranges are fully NDAA-compliant and include AI-powered security features, simple installation, and long-term maintenance through OvrC integration.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

Today Snap One encompasses leading brands in networking and remote management, lighting, loudspeakers, amplifiers, multi-room audio, surveillance, power and surge protection, racks, mounts, cables connectors and wiring.

As we evolve, innovate and invest, we will have more developments to share with you across this portfolio in the months ahead.

At the same time, we continue to offer exceptional support to our partners, helping their businesses be as successful as possible.

Finally, we have also introduced this year a new Sustainability and Wellness CPD that we and our partners can deliver to architects and interior designers. Accredited by both RIBA and the BIID, this CPD will open up conversations with these audiences, build relationships and help you communicate how we can create a safer, healthier, and more eco-friendly home for clients. SurgeX CONNECT comprises powerful cloud-based software and firmware, enabling integrators to easily manage an entire estate of compatible SurgeX devices across multiple sites, diagnose power quality issues, and monitor installations from a centralised hub. “SurgeX CONNECT is a huge leap forward, adding powerful remote management and monitoring capabilities to complement the outstanding power management and power quality solutions that we are renowned for,” says Justin Peyton, Director of Sales EMEA, AMETEK SurgeX. “SurgeX CONNECT allows integrators to take control of their installations’ power quality remotely by reducing the need for expensive and time-consuming site visits all while optimising AV performance. The intuitive and secure SurgeX CONNECT platform enables integrators to monitor, toggle, reboot and control outlets and devices remotely,

empowering integrators to meet power quality requirements across project sites. Integrators can monitor and categorise devices based on status, connectivity, battery charge, battery life, input voltage, and energy usage, allowing them to identify and resolve device issues from afar.

SurgeX CONNECT also gives integrators the ability to view device analytics and detect recurrent power problems from compiled data and event logs. These features help users proactively monitor, manage, and maintain power quality, preventing potential problems from arising over time.

SurgeX CONNECT is available, free of charge, for both the SurgeX UPS Standalone backup solution and the SQUID power management system. Additional availability across the SurgeX Protect + Connect product line is set to roll out globally through early 2024. Keith explains, “I created designflow to help system integrators deliver the proper design and documentation required for any smart home system no matter how complex or indeed simple. We have example projects that system integrators can use with their clients to help sell accurate design fees that actually cover the time and skill required to deliver the proper design and documentation, whilst guaranteeing a

decent margin on design.

“By productising our design & documentation service, we make it easy for system integrators to sell design fees to their clients. This productisation sees the launch at EI Live! 2023 of our new built-in design service where we add the correct design fees for each project directly into the proposal or bid the system integrator has prepared before presenting it to the client.” Find out more on the stand.

FEELING LIKE A MILLION!

Together For Cinema reaches £1 million worth of installations. All the latest news from the industry’s favourite worthy cause.

When Together for Cinema Founder, Ian Morrish, ‘stumbled’, as he puts it, into the AV industry in the early 1990s, little did he know that his journey would lead him to creating a good cause company that has now achieved an incredible £1 million worth of cinema room installations in children’s hospices and other equally important places that support poorly children and their families.

The idea for Together for Cinema first came about in March of 2009, when Ian was watching The Secret Millionaire television programme. It featured a holiday home for children with short lives and their families in Blackpool. “I was so moved by the story I wanted to do more than simply donate to the cause,” he recalls. “So, I contacted the holiday home organisers to see if there was anything the AV industry at large could do to help.”

Around 14 months later, Ian and his team had created a cinema room in one of the log cabins donated by The Secret Millionaire. Having heard how much the cinema room was appreciated, he contacted Together for Short Lives, a large UK charity with 54 children’s hospices under its umbrella. After several meetings and conversations, Together for Cinema was born and set a target to complete 25 cinema room installations by the end of 2020. In September 2020, it achieved this

goal with a combined installation value of well over half a million pounds.

Although Together for Cinema’s journey kicked off in 2009, it wasn’t until March 2021 that Ian committed to running the company full time. It was then that the audio visual and associated industries started officially allocating grants to help fund the operation. This has been essential to securing both the future and development of Together for Cinema. There are now over 70 companies allocating grant funding who, between them, contribute to hitting the budgetary goals needed to shore up the annual operational expenditure, with fundraising activities from intrepid AV colleagues putting some ‘icing on the cake’ of both existing and future projects. Following the organisation being granted Community Interest Company status, Ian now also has a board of directors to help in the quest to continue the great work Together For Cinema does.

So far, with the help of Operational Partners, Installations Partners, Product Partners and Media Partners, Together for Cinema has now delivered 41 cinema room installations. Had these been paid for, they would have cost just over £1 million. “It’s an impressive figure and one that we’re very proud of,” Ian continues. “But by far the most satisfying part is the positive difference this coming together of the AV industry has made to the lives of so many children, their

families, carers, and anyone associated with the management of the organisations in what are often very challenging circumstances.”

The latest installations include a cinema room at Cherry Trees in Surrey and Resources for Autism in London. In September, Jooced installed new cinema rooms at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Walsall, We Are Beams in Hextable, Kent have taken Together for Cinema’s installation total to over £1 million.

To mark this milestone, a £1million Celebration Dinner is planned for May, 2024, which will be attended by 300 Together for Cinema partners and associates that have helped make the installations happen.

“We couldn’t have done any of this without the incredible support we’ve had from so many people and organisations,” Ian concludes. “Hosting a dinner to celebrate both the installations and the people who, completely free of charge, have worked tirelessly and donated the products that are making such a difference to so many people, seems only fitting.”

PULSE CINEMAS JOINS MIDWICH GROUP!

Our biggest ever news story is followed up with yet more initiatives to deliver added value for our dealers underlying the power and reach of our new ownership set up.

Mike Beatty, Pulse Cinemas CEO, explains, “After the news broke about our acquisition by the Midwich Group, we were very keen to set out our vision for the future, emphasising continuity of staff and locations, ambitious growth plans, and collaboration within the Midwich Group.

“I am committed to Pulse Cinemas and our industry, and will remain running the business as CEO, with the support of Kapes and our existing team, to ensure the company continues to grow.”

Mike adds, “There will be no changes to personnel – so dealers can be sure they will speak to the same people and get the same level of service and support that they have become accustomed to. Furthermore, we will continue to operate from our state-of-the-art HQ and demo facility in Stansted.

Co-Founder of Pulse Cinemas, Kapes Patel, who continues as COO, explains, “Over the years, we have been approached by many possible investors, but none seemed to add anything to our continued security, success, and growth. The moment we met the team at Midwich, we knew we’d found a partner that could offer everything we were missing. Despite

being in a strong financial position, we felt the need to give our staff, vendors, and dealers the added security of working with a company like Midwich, which possesses financial stability, extensive experience, and reach to add true value and increased potential to Pulse Cinemas.”

Mike adds, “This union will give us the scope and chance to get back to what we love doing and focus on promoting our brands and the incredible opportunities available to us. Our plan is to help our talented team maximise their potential and create an environment that encourages accelerated business growth. Alongside our carefully selected team, we plan to work closely with our dealers, supporting them as if their businesses were our own, to ensure they can offer their deserving clients the solutions, products, and services we and our partners provide. DÉCORCINEMAS

Mike enthuses, “One of the projects we are particularly excited about is DécorCinema, a concept we have high-hopes for, particularly now we are part of a larger group. If you haven’t heard of it before, DécorCinema is a concept designed to offer a complete high-performance aesthetically focused package to end users that installers can buy into and market delivering a repeatable and succesful way of achieving higher revenue and more success in the home cinema market.”

Owning a DécorCinema will carry credibility and an assurance that customers are in ownership of the ultimate sound and picture, combined with the best aesthetics. The concept will be heavily marketed towards end users via specific channels building an awareness of and

desire for the concept.

The benefits of becoming a Dealer Partner will include use of all Pulse Cinemas facilities for partner events, use of a growing library of communal images for promotional activities created by Pulse Cinemas, as well as support with site/project photography and videos of completed DécorCinema projects. Dealer Partners will also be able to carry the authorised DécorCinema logo within their own marketing. To become DécorCinema qualified, the company will need to have already shown a willingness to support the concept and complete the DécorCinema training programme. In the first year of membership, up to two team members from any installer can attend the new one-day DécorCinema Dealer Partner training course. The course will cover all aspects of cinema installation and execution design around the

DécorCinema framework. All DécorCinema installers will need

to be able to demonstrate a high level of home cinema design and installation competence. This will be achieved or proven via a mix of training from the DécorCinema programme or other exterior agencies such as ISF and HAA qualifications.

DécorCinema demonstration spaces will be made available at Pulse Cinemas HQ and The Minotti London showroom. More spaces will be added as the concept grows.

KALEIDESCAPE MOVIE MAKERS!

Another current initiative we are enjoying is the new promotional video that gives installers a powerful marketing tool to showcase the power of Kaleidescape, the best movie server.

Kaleidescape has created a special video that can be tailored to include dealers’ own contact and marketing details. The video is a tour de force, demonstrating how the Kaleidescape platform takes content delivery to a new level for any type of home cinema or media room project.

Demonstration is, of course, a key part of selling a high-performance home cinema. However, having extra promotional support during initial or final sales negotiations is a great ally, and Kaleidescape has produced a fantastic video that introduces the wider world to the exciting universe of Kaleidescape home cinema.

Not only does the video do an excellent job of introducing and selling the system, but dealers can also apply to have their version created, complete with logos, contacts, and related details, to use on their websites and in promotional campaigns and communications. The only criteria needed to qualify is the ability to physically demonstrate the Kaleidescape system. Dealers that can already do so can be immediately included, and those that don’t yet have a Kaleidescape demo as part of their set up, get in touch! We have already began creating the first few videos for dealers, so get yours ordered today!

Mike concludes, “It is a very exciting time for the whole Pulse Cinemas team, and we can’t wait to start leveraging the advantages our new situation will bring, delivering even more value to our dealers. Get in touch if you have any questions at all.”

THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF INDUSTRY APPRENTICESHIPS

Recruiting staff is a challenge that we and most of the industry have faced for several years. This shortage has highlighted the significance of apprenticeship schemes within the residential technology sector and their role as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.

Apprenticeships offer a unique learning experience that combines classroom education with hands-on training in the real world. In the context of the residential technology industry, this approach is particularly valuable. The industry demands a specialised skill set encompassing a deep understanding of automation systems, networks, audio visual systems, security, etc. Apprenticeships allow aspiring professionals to apply theoretical concepts to installations, repairs, and troubleshooting scenarios.

One of the key advantages of apprenticeships is the mentorship aspect. Seasoned professionals within the residential technology industry have accumulated years of experience and insights that cannot be taught in a classroom. Apprenticeships allow these experts to pass on their knowledge, guide apprentices through challenges, share industry best practices and instil a sense of craftsmanship beyond textbook learning. This direct transfer of knowledge hones technical skills and fosters a strong work ethic and problem-solving abilities.

Apprenticeships within the residential

technology industry have a positive impact not only on individual careers, but on the industry as a whole. As apprentices progress through their training, they contribute to the workforce by assisting in projects, collaborating with teams, and eventually taking on more responsibilities. This combination of fresh talent brings diverse perspectives and innovative approaches that drive the industry forward. Moreover, the sector strengthens its roots within communities by finding local talent through apprenticeship schemes.

For New Wave AV, the experience of employing apprentices for the last eight years has been overwhelmingly positive. They are productive members of the team who are keen to learn and work hard to develop their skills. Bringing staff in at the apprentice level has helped the company to develop a workforce with skills that align with our requirements. Apprenticeships create an increased sense of loyalty that has led to higher staff retention rates.

New Wave AV believes investing in technology apprenticeships demonstrates a commitment to workforce development and professional growth. This commitment enhances the company’s image in the eyes of potential employees, clients and stakeholders. It showcases the company as an employer that values learning, skill-building and creating opportunities for career advancement.

This level 3 apprenticeship standard is aimed at those who are keen to install, configure, and maintain a range of electrically connected digital home technologies. Combining a range of topics, this standard allows them to develop a comprehensive knowledge base and skillset and will help build a skilled workforce for the future. Knowledge areas include documentation; data and IP networking; automation and control; structured wiring, cables and connectors for digital infrastructure and system verification and testing.

PRIME THE CANNON!

REL’s long-standing reputation for subwoofers was born from the late Richard Edward Lord’s desire to fill in the bottom octave of music – exploring depths where few full-range speakers had gone before: high-level subwoofer inputs hooked into the stereo amp terminals, relatively small and subtle drivers and complex, large-volume cabinets were designed to ensure music bass was tuneful and articulate.

While the brand has done very well offering subwoofers to the home cinema market over the years and effectively designed models that work in both camps, the designs have always retained the music-first DNA, right down to the high-level inputs. Until that is, the HT (Home Theatre) series came along: stripped down LFE-focused machines with attractive price points, black-only finish and forgoing the high-level input. They even gained distinctly cinema-esque names like ‘Predator’ and ‘The Hammer’. With some irony, they sounded damn fine with music too.

Fast forward a couple of years, and we have here the first of the HT second-generation

models, the middle-of-the-range HT1205 MkII. The 12 represents the 12in(300mm) custom REL CarbonGlas driver, and the 05 bit indicates the half-kilowatt class D amplifier within. It also gets an all-action pseudonym… The Cannon. For budget home cinema installs, it ticks all the key boxes, being relatively compact at a roughly cubic 41cm x 39cm x 44cm, finished in black, and with a sealed and braced box design. The forward-facing driver makes integration at the front of the room and/or back to the wall very easy. The line-grained composite around the sides gives way to a gloss black top plate, giving the design a classy look, if not ideal for screen reflections in some positions. The feet are very nicely crafted in a brushed metal finish, with REL logos on the front, albeit incapable of being ‘stacked’ like the top-spec HT1508 MkII model.

The outsourced amplifier is a MOSFET design Class D rated nearer 800W, so it is simply cruising along at the 500W stated, with plenty of headroom. The onboard filter network and crossovers remain in the analogue domain,

including analogue sub-sonic filters to minimise infra-noise from soundtracks that dip well below the resonant point of the driver.

Connectivity is stereo RCA line level or LFE inputs with daisy-chain RCA outputs, and the controls are limited to gain, crossover, 0/180 degree phase and auto power on switch. That covers all the essential ingredients for a basic cinema subwoofer cake, with the icing being the price. Currently retailing at £699.00 (down from £849 for a while) makes The Cannon a material bargain for lower-cost AV install projects.

Connection and setup are as easy as it gets, not least of which is that, at under 20kg, you can wiggle the HT1205 MkII around the room to find the sweet spot without risking several vertebrae. It is compatible with REL’s wireless HT Air system, so it doesn’t matter if your sweet spot is far from the AVR. That said, being a sealed design with the forward driver, it wasn’t that critical of room position. I ended up with the unit at the front of the room, back to the wall beneath the screen, just off-centre. With a quick flick of the phase switch, a tweak of the gain

Compact, powerful, affordable and easy to install, is REL’s new HT1205 MkII Cannon the subwoofer to fire into your budget AV installs? Richard Stevenson lights the fuse.
24 SEPTEMBER 2023 ESSENTIAL REVIEW: REL HT1205 MKII - THE CANNON /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

and letting the AVR do the legwork with the LFE crossover, The Cannon is ready to fire at will.

And fire it does. The HT1205 MkII is the sort of subwoofer that cuts straight to the chase scene, delivering punchy, aggressive LFE with minimal bloat and overhang. The car chase and the bomb explosion in The Batman give the REL a thorough workout, and even at the limit of its notinsignificant SPL volume abilities, it remains supremely well-composed and enjoyable. With the sofa shaking with big LFE thumps, you must remember that all this performance is being delivered by a subwoofer comfortably under £1,000, even at its full RRP.

Switch to music and, like its predecessors, this MkII’ Home Theater’ (spelt incorrectly as REL is now American-owned) sub is remarkably articulate with stereo thanks in no small way to its super-tight bass control across the low-frequency spectrum. It thumps out rap and rock with the best of them and does an excellent job of filling out the lower registers with gentler content.

Of course, some subs go deeper than its claimed 22Hz at -6dB, and louder than its 12in driver, 70-litre enclosure and 500W amp will allow physically, but none at anything like the REL’s appealing price. In my installation, the 22Hz @ -6db figure would be a little ambitious, but given the bulk of LFE content is in the 30-80Hz region, that will not make a hill of beans difference at this installation level.

The great value opens further opportunities to up-sell the customer and upscale the installation. One could easily create an impressive front sub ‘array’ using the daisy-chain facility for less than the cost of a single, premium, larger driver/larger cabinet design from other manufacturers. Four or six HT1205 MkIIs along the front wall beneath the screen, naked or concealed with fabric-over-frame like commercial cinemas, would deliver a very ‘pro’ cinema cosmetic. Given this model’s pseudonym, we could call this setup a Battery.

It could deliver stupendous LFE output in a more discreet format and at a lower cost than one premium, fully-featured 15-inch sub from other brands. Sprinkle in some compensation LF EQ from, say, Dirac Live or Audyssey MultEQ-X on the AVR, and you could easily trim back the prodigious output above 25-30Hz to reveal greater depth below. If we can convince REL to loan us another five units… we will keep you posted on the results.

REL’s HT series was a great success, and the theme continues into the MkII incarnation with aplomb. As the middle unit in this discrete, compact, frill-free and well-put-together line-up of subwoofers, the HT1205 MkII arguably sits at the sweet spot for sheer value too. With the current 20% discount only running for the summer, it might be time to charge up your REL batteries now.

SEPTEMBER 2023 25 ESSENTIAL REVIEW: REL HT1205 MKII - THE CANNON essentialinstall.com @Install_mag /Essentialinstall

D b M AND LUMAGEN

Lumagen provides solutions for video switching, calibration, plus deinterlacing and scaling. Together, these allow knowledgeable integrators and enthusiasts to provide the best quality and most accurate video images for their home theatre installations.

Whether you’re looking to scale BluRay for a new 4K UltraHD display, to elevate your experience with studio-quality colour calibration, or to simply want to watch a movie as the director intended, Lumagen video processors will open your eyes. With numerous advanced controls, including Lumagen’s No-Ring scaling, geometry control and 4913-point CMS, your home theatre can reach its full potential.

THE LUMAGEN STORY

Lumagen was founded in 2001 to develop and manufacture low cost, high quality, scaling solutions. Since then, Lumagen has taken the industry by storm and revolutionised the calibration market in the process.

Vision and Vision Pro were the first products that Lumagen launched. They provided a balance between superior picture quality and affordable pricing. In 2004, the company introduced a more advanced digital range. These digital in and out video processors were the first domestic devices to feature parametric multi-point gamma and greyscale adjustments.

In 2007, the Lumagen Radiance range was launched. Since then, Lumagen has continually strived to increase their performance and functionality with constant software development – with updates such as adding

support for 3D formats and 125 point colour gamut LUT adjustments.

D bM AND LUMAGEN JOIN FORCES

Lumagen appointed DbM as a sub-distributor for the Radiance range of video processors in November 2022. The deal allows DbM to meet the demand for integrators to have the ability to process dynamic mapping on HDR content in a more effective way than that which takes place within the projection system.

“We aim to offer the complete solution at DbM,” comments Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales at DbM. “We had seen the challenges that dynamic tone mapping presented in our own demonstration rooms, and using content metadata was unreliable, the frame-by-frame approach utilised by Lumagen is the perfect solution. Recognising that Lumagen has been in the business for 20+ years and is a renowned specialist of video processing and video calibration, we knew that they would be the right partner for us. We saw synergy between what we want to achieve for our integrators and what Lumagen offers.”

Integrators purchasing the Radiance range of Lumagen products via DbM will have access to a full calibration service, which will see the Lumagen team visit site to calibrate the system.

“DbM puts performance and customer service at the forefront of its business model,” comments Gordon Fraser, Managing Director of Convergent AV. “The brands it represents, such as Meridian and Barco, are world renowned for producing reference quality video

and audio products. Lumagen has been at the top of the game for video processing solutions for the last 20 years, with the current Radiance Pro platform going from strength to strength as we continue to develop and enhance features and video accuracy.”

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

The Radiance range of processors use Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) processing, so they offer a hardware-based solution. This allows them to be fully programmed by the Lumagen team, meaning integrators have a more reliable and robust platform housed in a compact device with just a 1U form factor.

Regardless of input resolution, the Lumagen processors offer a full suite of resolution enhancement and picture quality improvements, including aspect ratio detection and non-linear stretch. Another massively useful feature (especially considering super lowlatency projectors such as the Barco range) is the video delay option. This feature delays the video signal to the projector, enabling perfect lip-syncing (normally only the audio can be delayed in an audio processor). Small details like this really boost the immersion of a system and draw the viewer in.

The Radiance Pro™ series of video processors enhance the award-winning Radiance video processor family by adding support for 4k60 inputs and outputs, including HDCP 2.2, HDR, and HLG.

ESSENTIAL CUK SEPTEMBER 2023 29 essentialinstall.com @Install_mag /Essentialinstall

THE EVOLUTION OF LIGHTING

Phillip Pini, Director of Residential Sales UK, Crestron, looks into the light.

For decades, artificial lighting for the home evolved at a pace that was nearly glacial. After the introduction of incandescent bulbs in the 1800s, early fluorescent bulbs came to market in the 1930s, followed several decades later by the first practical LED lights.

That slow pace of development changed dramatically in the 2000s. While the early LED bulbs were quite harsh, the technology has improved substantially, now offering a range of tunable white and colour-changing options.

FROM SHOWY TO SUBTLE

What may be most remarkable, however, is the shift in these lights from ‘novelty’ applications to genuine environmental impact. As the first coloured LED bulbs were introduced –including those that could be adjusted for a spectrum of effects – the use cases seemed to centre around these luminaires as curiosities. Want a red bath of light throughout a room for a ‘party’ effect? LEDs could do the trick.

Now, however, lighting is part of the environmental aspect of our lives – changes in the lighting spectrum delivered by these bulbs are becoming less and less obvious to the end user. Circadian shifts in light, for example, can now occur with the same kind of background subtlety that one expects from a quality HVAC system.

The technology that drives HVAC systems has reached a state where they manage themselves. There’s very little interaction other than the occasional tweak of the controls. Tunable LED lighting is completely capable of the same thing: Set it and forget it. The number of button pushes associated with a lighting system can be reduced to near zero – especially if one has an outdoor sensor that can capture the minute-by-minute changes in sunlight and mimic that illumination within the walls of the home.

NEW FORM FACTORS, NEW APPLICATIONS

As tunable bulbs themselves become more ubiquitous, these luminaires also become more attainable. Currently, any consumer who sets foot inside a ‘big-box’ store will be confronted by a staggering number of bulbs, all with their own hue and temperature. The dizzying number of choices on the shelves is bound to become less overwhelming in the near future as price points for single bulbs that can “do it all” come down.

LED technology has also, of course, allowed for an incredibly broad range of form factors both inside and outside of buildings – in fact, it’s never been easier to use light as a true architectural or design element that can literally follow the lines

of a structure instead of merely highlighting a particular feature. These luminaires can be designed in a manner that lets architects and designers truly ‘draw with light’ to create effects that were unimaginable – or at least prohibitively expensive – just a few years ago.

The negative environmental impact of exterior light can be lessened as technology advances, too. When outdoor light is deployed and scheduled properly, it can provide everything from ambiance to path lighting without disturbing neighbors or nature. This trend will continue – the advances we’ve seen in interior lighting will continue to make their way outdoors, creating patio and porch spaces that are truly ‘rooms of their own.’

All of these developments – and their potential – have been absolutely top of mind for us at Crestron, especially as we continue to update and expand our Crestron Home OS. With greater functionality comes the challenge of maintaining simplicity and intuitive ease of use. Just as we’ve given our dealers and installers the power to edit rooms and scenes quickly, we’re also extending that level of control and customisation to the end user. The ultimate goal remains the same: Give whoever is using our lighting systems as much control and customisation as we can without adding complexity to the interface.

LIGHTING THE WAY TO FUTURE SUCCESS

Lighting has the potential to make a hugely positive impact on the comfort and wellbeing of homeowners and their families, not to mention the attractiveness of a property. So, what can integrators do to achieve these results? And, how is the pathway to growing the lighting side of an integrator’s business now so much easier to navigate? Snap One explains, with the help of one of its London-based Certified Showroom Partners, Naim Cohen from NGC Systems.

What difference can a well-designed and controlled lighting scheme make to a property?

In short, a beautifully designed, controlled and layered lighting solution can influence emotions, change moods and set just the right tone for the customer and their family. On a practical level, it can assist with different tasks and be an important part of helping them feel more comfortable, happier and more secure. Beyond these benefits, good lighting also creates an environment that breathes life into the interior, enhancing the elegance of its colours, the artworks on display, as well as the furniture, fabrics and finishes within the home.

In the words of Naim Cohen from CEDIA award-winning company, NGC Systems, “Lighting plays an exceptionally crucial role in a home. It can transform a good home into an outstanding one. Poor lighting, on the other hand, can ruin even the most fantastic interior design, leading to the dreaded ‘runway of spots.’”

Now, more than ever, Snap One Partners are well placed to bring professionally designed and implemented lighting solutions within the reach

of their customers. They can take advantage of a revenue stream that provides fully immersive enhancements to an installation and also personalise the automated lighting experience for the benefit of everyone in the home.

VIBRANT LINEAR LIGHTING

Vibrant Linear Lighting is a complete range of LED tape in a full selection of white, tunable white, colour, and colour + tunable white options which allows architects, interior designers and lighting designers to work with their Snap One Partners and create sophisticated, accented lighting experiences for every need and budget with a simple, low-voltage set up.

This new line also supports circadian health, with its capability to mimic nature with bright, cool light during the day that slowly dims and warms in the evening. Scenes can be easily activated with the press of a button, a voice command, or through Control4 automation to provide a more immersive experience and enrich a customer’s lifestyle and well-being.

In addition to the creation of personalised experiences to enhance wellbeing, the Vibrant Linear Lighting line is designed to ensure a simple and professional-looking installation.

This is achieved through aluminium extrusions for mounting, translucent lenses to soften and diffuse light and Zigbee, DMX or DALI modules that provide reliable control of colour and lighting temperature settings. Power supplies are provided in a range from 30W to 300W to fit the needs of each room and project.

THE PARTNER OPPORTUNITY

“As we undertake various projects, our understanding of lighting design keeps expanding,” says Naim. “We have become acquainted with the distinct styles of different designers and the guiding principles of effective lighting design. While we have applied our expertise to smaller projects, for more complex, larger ones, we engage the services of a specialised lighting designer.

“At NGC Systems, we’re passionate about lighting and what it can do for our clients as well as for our company. We love light! And we love what we can achieve with Vibrant. We can create an elegant, transformative lighting experience that can be fully and seamlessly integrated. It’s also a solution that’s valued and appreciated by our customers.”

GO INTO THE LIGHT!

The world of audio-visual (AV) technology and integration is extensive. From loudspeakers, amplifiers and acoustic treatments to screens, projectors and control systems, the job of the AV integrator in understanding the nuances of what’s on offer and how best to bring all of these different technologies together on the right cabling and network infrastructure into an attractive, high-performance and fully functioning solution can be a challenging one.

It helps that we’re passionate about our industry and, for many of us, that is a key driver behind why we do it. But what happens when we have to convince others to get excited about it as much as we do?

It would be fair to say that when we’re dealing directly with a tech-savvy homeowner, then, that’s not usually a huge problem. Often their partner tends to be less enthusiastic. Architects, interior designers and property developers even less so.

It’s not uncommon for architects, designers and developers to have such negative preconceptions of AV before a project has actually started. One poor experience of a brand, or an installation that didn’t quite meet their expectations can stay with them for a long time.

The result is that integrators can immediately be on the backfoot when coming in to share our ideas, especially when we lead with AV. From the mid-2000s onwards, working at a variety of AV companies and starting my own business, this was an increasingly common experience. I began to think that there has to be a better way to engage clients, architects, designers and property professionals. The answer is lighting.

WIDE APPEAL

Everyone can get their heads around the concept of lighting design where the visual impact of good design is clear to see, more tangible and easily demonstrable in a way that all parties on a project can relate to. It’s a topic where two-way feedback and opinion is also much more openly voiced and shared.

Clients may have seen something they like in someone else’s home or in a hotel or restaurant; they may have pictures of fixtures that they like the look of, or they may want to splash out on a chandelier centrepiece –either way lighting creates more of a two-way conversation than a discussion about an HDMI matrix switch ever could.

Lighting is in the fabric of every building, and how well it’s managed is key to how well the building works. Architects, designers and developers know this, and they know that end users want their houses to be lit nicely. Their lighting priorities are attractive design, easy to understand and personalised control, aesthetically attractive fittings and a reliable quality of light throughout the building.

We saw how meeting this type of brief with the solutions that we have at our fingertips was much more straightforward and excited everyone on the project. Putting lighting at the heart of the offering provides an opportunity to start those conversations on a more positive note and shows the value that we can bring to a project to build trusted relationships with all parties.

We are experienced in demonstrating the comfort, flexibility and aesthetic benefits that a control system, such as, Rako can offer on

a project. But lighting is more about control. In terms of business success, we believe it’s important to offer all aspects of a lighting installation. You can’t put a control system in without the design because it would just be an expensive dimmer switch; and you can’t put the design in unless you know the products you’re specifying. All components of a lighting system need to work together.

We’ve seen the opportunity and embraced lighting fully in our business. We’ve even dropped the AV name from our business and are now known as Lighting of London.

Leading with lighting doesn’t mean that our conversations start and end with lighting. We’re involved on projects from the get-go, developing a relationship with the project team which naturally opens up discussions on other areas of our expertise. For example, we can talk about how the lighting integrates with other aspects of the home automation system, including blinds, security, and, of course, the AV parts of the system.

If you are an integrator who does lighting control but you want to take that further, look at the different markets, the various aspects of a project and work out where you think you can build your business to offer more. Collaborations with lighting designers, interior designers and the support of forward-thinking lighting controls companies, such as Rako which we enjoy, can help on this journey, allowing installers to identify the opportunities and reap the benefits.

Steve Noyes, Managing Director at Lighting of London explains how lighting can be a great route into projects for installers where prospective clients and design professionals may not be over-excited about professionally installed audio, media room or home cinema solutions.

GREAT PERFORMANCE, EASY INSTALLATION AND LOW MAINTENANCE

Automated blinds provide a lifestyle experience that improve convenience, well-being, security and room aesthetics for a client. They can bring a benefit to any room on a project from living areas and bedrooms to cinema and media rooms where they can be integrated easily with other technologies to help give that wow factor that every installer wants their client to feel. If you want to create an experience that goes ‘above and beyond’ for the client, then, automated blinds are an important, visible part of that solution.

Within this context, it’s then important to look at the key features and benefits of the brands that you work with. Here’s what John Thompson at Oldfield LSV has to say on the topic.

“I was first introduced to QMotion EMA at a trade show in 2017 and we immediately found the brand and products to be a perfect fit for us. We have worked on many projects where contractors and designers have included automated window treatments that required specialist cabling. By having QMotion in our product portfolio, we are able to offer motorised solutions as part of our custom installation

package and even retrofit them to already completed projects.

“Since we don’t need specialist wiring, we can complete the main part of the installation work and when all trades had left, we can return to measure and install the battery-powered QMotion blinds with minimum fuss.”

Aesthetics are also a significant factor in brand selection and specification. Clients want to be able to match the blind fabric with the décor or other soft furnishings in their rooms.

John says, “we show them our fabric binders and from this, they select a sample that QMotion then sends directly to them. Once the fabric is confirmed and the windows are measured, we produce a professional QMotion customer quote. The blinds only take three weeks to arrive from order and, often, less than a day to fit and commission.”

John continues, “One of my first projects in 2017 was for a client who wanted automated shades in three locations within their home. But, first fix had already been completed and it was not possible to get any cables in. The client lived in an area with spectacular views and wanted the freedom to enjoy the vistas

but retain an element of privacy, when needed. The fabric chosen complemented the décor in the room, helped with solar gain and allows the client to still enjoy the amazing views outside the home. The client was sceptical to begin with when I said the batteries would last 4-5 years. But, I returned in 2022 to change the batteries, and they were pleasantly surprised. As a result, they’ve ordered four more QMotion shades for a games room extension.”

QMotion EMEA offers a 20-year lifetime warranty on the control and power provided by the company’s ultra-quiet Cat6 wired motors and native integration with Control4 and Rako along with drivers for Crestron Home, Elan, KNX, Loxone, RTI, Savant and URC to make the installation process as fast and efficient as possible.

When it comes to motorised window treatments, John Thompson from Yorkshire-based Oldfield LSV outlines what does the job for him.

‘FALL’ BACK ON SMART SECURITY SOLUTIONS FOR A PROFITABLE AUTUMN PERIOD

Of course, darker nights make for the perfect conditions for burglars, with more areas to hide and move around undetected. So, it’s no surprise that burglary rates typically increase at this time of year, with recent analysis of home insurance claims by Churchill Home Insurance proving a link between this rise and the clocks going back.

October also signals the arrival of National Home Security Month (NHSM) from Yale. An initiative designed to make homeowners aware of the importance of home security at this vulnerable time of year.

Home security today isn’t just locks and safes. Although these are still integral parts of keeping consumer’s homes and belongings safe, the smart home market has changed the game in the category, allowing for remote control and monitoring of a home via a smartphone.

According to recent figures from Yale, smart security systems are one of the most in-demand products for consumers, with 53% of homeowners willing to pay more to buy or rent a home with a smart security system in place.

SMART ALARMS

Smart alarms are a great investment area for installers looking to boost profits as the cooler months approach. High quality smart security systems, such as the Yale Sync Smart Home Alarm range, allow homeowners to arm and disarm their alarm from anywhere at any time, all from the convenience of a smartphone.

These systems will raise the alarm when it’s been activated, sending a notification to alert the homeowner, ensuring they can have complete control over their home security from afar.

When opting to add a smart alarm to your smart security portfolio, installers can also open up opportunities for further upselling. The most advanced systems allow for the addition of other security accessories including window and door sensors, interlinked smoke detectors, motion detectors and smart plugs.

SMART SECURITY CAMERAS

Smart security cameras, or CCTV systems, are another key area. Smart security cameras allow homeowners to monitor their home from anywhere, at any time via their smartphone to always be ‘in the know’ about their home security.

Smart security camera systems, such as Yale’s new Smart Motion CCTV & Door Camera Kit, are designed for professional installers and electrical contractors and have a variety of handy functionalities for homeowners.

From image masking, live viewing, intelligent detection and night vision capabilities, a high quality smart security camera is a worthwhile investment for homeowners looking to improve their home security ahead of the new season.

Like smart alarms, security cameras are also an effective visual deterrent to help reduce the chances of being targeted by criminals.

Installers should also be aware of the current, ongoing issues with car theft and ensure their customers are clued up on this threat. Statistics reveal an increase in car theft of 29% in the past year alone, and paired with the darker nights on the way, you should also consider recommending solutions that have a built-in security light such as a floodlight camera.

By recommending that these products are positioned at the front of the home, high quality options, such as the Yale Floodlight Camera, allow homeowners to keep an eye on

their home, garden and even car in any low-light conditions with high quality video and multiple lighting modes.

SMART HOME AUTOMATION

With smart home products also comes the benefit of automation and wider connectivity. The smart home security sector offers similar benefits, with a range of add-on products, such as smart locks, smart alarms and security cameras to name a few, helping to build a connected ecosystem that all works together seamlessly.

When it comes to investing in the right products in this area, the key is choosing the most respected brands in the market.

When it comes to security, homeowner’s trusting the product is essential, with statistics revealing that 41% of Brits would decide to purchase a security product based on whether it’s from a trusted brand. Brands such as Yale have a long heritage and experience in security, both mechanical and smart, and are well-known amongst consumers, allowing you to provide high quality products that will protect your customer’s homes all year round.

With next month signalling the clocks going back and National Home Security Month, be sure to stock up on these security solutions in advance to ensure your customers, and their homes, are prepared for the dark nights period ahead.

Autumn’s approaching. To many, that means cooler, breezier weather on the horizon and the start of shorter days and nights drawing in. But an area that many of us forget to consider as autumn arrives is the increased risk of burglary to our homes. Matt Claydon, Head of Trade at Yale UK, shares his advice.

WHAT MATTERS IN SURVEILLANCE?

Snap One considers some of the fundamentals when it comes to keeping watch.

According to the Home Security System Global Market Report 2023¹, the global market forecast for security systems is set to grow at a CAGR of 1.6% to $4.26 billion by 2027.

For homeowners in the high-end residential space, minimising threats and keeping property, contents and, of course, family members safe from intruders is an imperative. That’s why home security and surveillance systems represent a key area of growth for the professional home technology industry.

So, if integrators are looking to expand their business in surveillance and security, what are the key product features and benefits they should be looking for?

An extensive line up of products and solutions that offer robust performance to meet different requirements is fundamentally important.

In IP cameras that versatility should extend to options in bullet, turret, and dome solutions with different resolutions and fixed and varifocal lens options to suit application and budget requirements. It’s critical also to select cameras that include 24/7 colour with Colour at Night technology and offer the best clarity in low-light environments.

Meanwhile, AI technology is transforming the performance of IP cameras. AI analytics can now distinguish between human, vehicle and non-motor vehicle detection and notifications. When used with a control system, a series of events can be triggered. For example, when a car enters the driveway, the IP camera could signal the control system to automatically activate the pathway lights to turn on.

Flexibility is also significant in Network Video Recorders (NVRs). Key capabilities to look for include support for higher resolution cameras up to 8MP, 4K HDMI output, intelligent analytics, long-distance PoE, multi-channel configuration and large storage capacities.

Easy control with the chosen brand’s surveillance app and integration with the home’s control platform, such as Control4, is also an

important consideration to ensure a simple, fast and efficient installation.

Lastly, NDAA and ONVIF Conformance ensures that the products you specify will have the right compatibility for almost any project.

THE EASY ROUTE

At Snap One, we’ve made it our mission to make life easier for integrators and offer everything required for every project – including a growing portfolio of security and surveillance products. We’re now bringing these technologies to UK and European integrators with solutions that are purpose-designed for quality performance and easy integration into home automation systems.

Our new core security lineup of NDAAcomplaint solutions from Luma and ClareVision

deliver a powerful and versatile surveillance experience tailored for professional integrators, yet accessible and user-friendly for end customers.

Whilst both Luma X20 and ClareVision solutions can be installed and used independently, they can also be mixed and matched to create custom systems to meet the needs of any client. Installers can also leverage the full benefits of our OrvC platform to offer clients better support in real-time. Luma and ClareVision products can be seamlessly integrated with OvrC, allowing for easy deployment and configuration on site, as well as access to remote management and troubleshooting of the system.

SECURITY DETAIL

LILIN UK CEO Steve Liddiard explains the best way of specifying an integrated security system for the non-security installer.

We’ve all seen it: every spy, action or thriller film seems to have a scene in which a man in a control room manages to identify the villain in a city centre crowd, zoom in and pinpoint their exact location, and verify the identity with enough time for the hero to swoop in and catch them- or vice versa.

Unfortunately, CCTV in the real world is not quite as Hollywood would have it appear- that incredibly powerful, clarifying zoom with unreal motion tracking just doesn’t exist yet! If security isn’t your company’s bread and butter, you might find it tricky to know how to make sure the system you’ve specified will hit all of the client’s requirements, so here are a few tips from LILIN UK to get you started.

Know what questions to ask

The most important part of your client consultation is making sure that you leave fully understanding what your client wants to achieve. They may just breeze past the security aspect of the installation (we know it’s not as

interesting as a cinema room) and ask you to install a system, without really considering what they want.

1) What do you want the camera to see? When you playback the footage, what do you want to be able to make out? A general surveillance camera covering a wide area probably won’t be able to give a huge amount of detail 30M down the driveway, such as a license plate or an identifying image of someone’s face. Try to pin it down to more exact terms and make sure you are on the same page. If they change their mind later, you can always expand the system!

2) What do you want the system to do? Does the customer want a specific reaction from the camera? This may lead you to a specific series of cameras if you are looking to introduce additional analytics- such as our IVS2.2, Human and Vehicle Detection or other features such as License Plate Recognition.

Does the client want to have remote access to their system i.e., through a mobile app? As this will probably be the main interface the customer uses to view their system, it’s important to have an intuitive, end-user-friendly app experience.

3) What do you want the system to look like? It’s the age-old security question, do you choose overt or covert security? Do they want the cameras to blend into the house, or do they want it to be obvious and act as a deterrent?

Cameras come in a range of sizes and form factors to suit a variety of installations, from the pinhole covert camera to the IR PTZ. It is important to let the client know that, though you will try to take their preference into account, you may be restricted to a certain size or form factor to achieve their desired outcome. A tiny microdome with a fixed lens can’t provide the same distance or IR range as a larger bullet camera.

Know what is feasible:

Once you understand what your client wants, can it be achieved? Speaking to a manufacturer like LILIN or a distribution partner will help you build your project specification.

1) What do you want the camera to see?

You can usually achieve most reasonable requests, but you need to be specific. A camera can read a license plate at a 50M distance, but it needs to be one camera dedicated solely to this, with the lens calibrated to that distance. We would recommend speaking to the manufacturer to try and find a solution, even if it initially seems a strange request!

2) What do you want the system to do?

Most current IP cameras will have features such as HTTP posts and RTSP streams available for you to integrate with a third-party product or into a home automation system. Some manufacturers go a step further and develop drivers to make this automation more intuitive and give access to features like controlling the cameras or playback through the control system. LILIN developed the first Control4 driver for security cameras 10 years ago in 2013 and we have been sure to stay up to date with technological advances.

3) What do you want the system to look like?

IP cameras usually come in a white chassis as standard, with a dark grey or black chassis also being a popular option. LILIN also offer a custom finish service, so you can match your camera to a specified RAL colour. If you have to size up to achieve your goals, then you can at least offer the option of colour-matching the camera to the home to make it less obtrusive.

SECURITY AND SUPPORT

A good support network is important and knowing exactly what you can get is vital to help you build a strong maintenance contract with your client.

Make note of the product warranties and the returns/repairs procedures and terms, but also be sure to check for additional policies that be useful, for instance, are extended warranty periods or advanced replacement services available? Can repairs be conducted in the UK for a quicker turnaround? (Hint: LILIN answers are Yes, Yes, Yes!)

How easy is it to speak to technical supportand does the manufacturer or distributor have experience with home automation to be able to understand your systems?

Checking the manufacturers’ cybersecurity policy is vital to ensure that the security system is itself secure; if the products have a history of backdoors and are easily hacked, then the system and therefore the property cannot be secure.

The security landscape is currently abuzz with discussions regarding where security products are manufactured, following the implementation of the USA’s NDAA which restricts the use of Chinese-made surveillance products. Similar rhetoric is echoed in Taiwan, Australia and the UK, with some industry-specific and regional bans enacted in these countries.

The driving force has been the end-user, who is concerned about the security of their system and the ethical implications of using the same products that are currently monitoring ‘deprogramming’ camps in China. After all- the customer is always right!

DOLBY ATMOS’ DISAPPOINTING SUPPORT FOR INFERIOR PRODUCTS

Regular EI contributor Joe Carri, Director at install company Prestige Audio, worries Dolby might be damaging their own brand when it comes to Dolby Atmos.

We love creating truly immersive home cinemas based around Dolby Atmos audio. This is the cutting-edge surround sound technology that has transformed in-home and commercial cinema audio forever. This is why we feel compelled to ask why Dolby is allowing the concept to be watered down and damaged by allowing products that can never truly produce Dolby Atmos to carry the logo?

Creating a truly immersive home cinema using Dolby Atmos is a complicated business. A huge amount has been written, discussed and commented on around how exactly to get the best performance, and this will continue as fresh ideas and content arrive.

The Dolby Atmos Specifications publication is 24 pages long and carries literally every angle of what installers need to know and adhere to when creating a home cinema that will enable the customer to enjoy the full force of the technology. It is a very thorough document and is used by many installers as the blueprint for ensuring they deliver all the system can offer. The choice of components and products is of course up to the installer and will be determined by many factors that change from location to location and client to client, but the rules that determine how to build a Dolby Atmos home cinema are always the same. They

were created by Dolby to enable installers to reach the performance zenith the system offers and presumably this took Dolby scientists considerable effort; and that is before you get into all the effort Dolby went to in creating the technology in the first place!

The process of creating a fully certified Dolby Atmos home cinema endorsed by the company is even more challenging and begins with using the company’s own processor equipment, allied to software that is downloadable only after the company has approved all the drawings for speaker placement in the room (the process requires a lot of work and many drawings). Once the design has been approved by Dolby, the software, using the drawings as its guide, can be downloaded and fed into the Dolby processor. To get the official seal of approval from Dolby should be a challenge and we welcome the fact it is controlled in this way. We would not expect a company of this calibre and history to put its official stamp on projects that do not meet the very highest standards.

WHY?

So, taking all of this into account, why is Dolby allowing products, such as soundbars that are not equipped to properly deliver the true immersive nature of the technology, carry the

official stamp of Dolby Atmos? Just Google ‘Dolby Atmos Soundbar’ and a whole host of options appear at a wide range of price points.

Now we are not saying these soundbars are bad products and some do carry the ability to place sound in the room by reflecting audio off the walls/ceiling, and to be fair this has been part of the domestic approach from a long way back, perhaps mostly out of the need to cope with unfavourable rooms or the need to meet a budget so fewer speakers are required.

But are these systems delivering true Dolby Atmos? We don’t feel so. The customer is taking them home, believing they have a Dolby Atmos system, when we would argue they don’t. What is our team to say to a client who, after we explain at length how to create a true Dolby Atmos home, they say say, ‘I already have that on my soundbar, its officially endorsed by Dolby. It’s got the logo and everything’. Now, we like to think we are good at explaining the benefits of investing in our expertise and experience, but when something is officially endorsed by the company who created it, that presents us with a challenge.

So, in conclusion it is accurate to say that we love Dolby Atmos and we thank Dolby for creating it, but we would ask the company to stop damaging its own concept by endorsing products that we feel can’t meet the true specifications required to deliver it. Dolby Atmos is a great system, let’s protect it!

A BARNSTORMING SHOWROOM FROM STEINWAY LYNGDORF

In an exclusive first visit, EI was invited to check out the brand-new showroom created to showcase the Lyngdorf Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf brands in the UK.

In October of 2021 it was announced that after establishing a new company in the UK, the Lyngdorf Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf brands would be supplied to dealers and installers direct, with the maker appointing a new team to lead this new approach. With Charlie McClarron appointed as Sales Director, later joined by Simon Schino as Sales and Operations Manager, supply direct began in April of 2022.

A part of this new approach was always the ambition to build a comprehensive showroom to give installers, dealers and their customers a chance to experience fully what the company has to offer. That ambition is now a reality with this impressive showroom nestled in the North Essex Countryside, residing on a beautiful early Georgian farmstead and equestrian centre called Brook Farm.

The showroom is situated in a stunning converted medieval barn, a fine canvas to showcase the different solutions the company can offer, delivering an appropriate backdrop for the client group the team wants to target.

The open plan space provides two floors of luxury showroom with the groundfloor operating as the Lyndorf Audio showcase and the upstairs catering for the Steinway Lyngdorf products. The ground floor also features a meeting/planning area and an impressive home cinema showcasing both brands.

Charlie explains, “It has been a real challenge to get to this point. We knew right away when we first viewed it that this location was the right fit for us, but as we all know, working with a period and listed property such as this presents a certain set of challenges; some you can foresee, others are not so obvious. However, all the hard work has paid off and we are proud of what has been created here. We feel it gives a great insight into each brand and we have designed the space to showcase different solutions for a range of use case scenarios that customers will be able to relate to.”

50 SEPTEMBER 2023 ESSENTIAL STEINWAY LYNGDORF /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

Explaining the details of what is on demonstration, Simon reveals, “Across both brands, we are highlighting 12 different systems. We have everything from a basic on-wall speaker setup with no subwoofers, to stereo setups with subs, a 5.2 media room system, and two full on 7.2.4 cinemas. To list the systems, we have an MH-2 with no subs running from a TDAI-1120, CS-1 in cabinet speakers running from a TDAI1120, MH-3 with BW-3 subs running from a TDAI-1120, D-500 with BW-2 subs running from a TDAI-1120, and a CUE-100 running from a TDAI-3400.

“We also have Steinway systems in stereo which include Model O, Model A, Model B, Model D, then we also have a Model S 5.2 living room system. In the cinema we have a Lyngdorf LS-1000 cinema running with BW20 subs, MP-60 processor and SDA-2400 amps. In the same space we we have a Steinway IW-66 cinema running with LS Boundary Woofers and all the electronics. We feel this gives visitors a good insight into what the brands can deliver, covering a huge range of scenarios and price points.”

With a space like this, industry partnerships are always a big part of the project. Charlie explains, “Install company Sinemas were instrumental in the build and design of the space, helping us with the install, build and then the interior design – using their panels in many of the spaces to lift the aesthetics and performance of the showroom.

“We also have Loewe TVs throughout, and a Kaleidescape movie server for content. HDA helped us with the cables along with the guys at FS Cables; the whole building is wired with their cables. Sony helped us with a projector, which was provided by AWE.”

THE DEMO JOURNEY

The systems that visitors can experience are presented in a well-thought-out journey that allows each customer or installer to identify the most appropriate system. The space has lots of natural light which floods the interior, providing

a pleasant setting in which it is easy to spend several hours in complete comfort.

The Lyngdorf Audio floor underlines the strong value available from this brand – the performance-to-price ratio is perhaps one of the strongest aspects of this brand and the team have done a good job allowing visitors to understand everything the manufacturer can offer in real world scenarios. Integrated around this part of the showroom is the planning space with a large table and large screen TV to look at detailed plans – either in print or up on the screen. For those customers who want to be involved with this type of planning or for installers to plan out their next project with the team, this is a practical and welcome addition to the space.

The next part of the tour moves to the mezzanine where the power of Steinway Lyngdorf is brought to the fore. In the first zone a comfortable swivel chair allows the visitors to sample some of the brand’s most powerful two channel systems in turn, moving the seat into the sweet spot for demonstrations of the Model O, Model A, and Model B speakers. High-performance staging and imaging have always been a particular hallmark of this brand, and this aspect gets a particularly strong outing here. At the opposite end of this space, the mighty Model Ds get their chance to shine. Dominating their space physically, visitors get the chance to experience these powerful, open and precise speakers.

The final stop on this part of the tour is a home cinema scenario showcasing the compact Model S speakers. One of the brand’s best sellers, this space underlines why, with impressive performance from these attractive compact speakers.

The home cinema is kept simple with a black interior and single sofa offering the chance to experience a Lyngdorf Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf cinema set up.

Charlie underlines the importance to the company of music in the home cinema sector. Unlocking the full potential of experiencing music concerts, or if required just listening to music, is a space the company feels has

not been fully exploited, and an area in which both brands can shine. So, any visitor can expect demos to include a healthy helping of music performances.

Charlie enthuses, “We are keen to underline that both brands are fully immersed in their traditional audio roots, but offer thoroughly modern solutions that answer any customer needs, as well as fully embracing the digital delivery revolution. It really is a best of both worlds scenario.”

Now the space is ready for visitors, what areas are the team most proud of?

Charlie says, “I think the cinemas are both amazing, especially for the price point they both hit! But for me I think the area upstairs with all the floor-standing speakers is next level; it’s just something totally different for the industry that no one else has. It shows the industry and their clients what a proper stereo listening experience can be.”

Simon adds, “I love the fact that the whole building works using our electronics as well, not just speakers. We are powering every system from both brands with all of our electronics, meaning we can sell full systems rather than just parts of systems. Both brands can provide the total package consumers want.”

As for the business benefits to be gained from the project, Simon states, “I think the obvious benefit is for our dealers and the fact they can bring their clients over to such a special space and we can show them so many different systems and solutions; it is a real game-changer. We also want to use the space for training to help all our dealers get the best from every product we sell.”

Charlie concludes, “We want the industry to know the space is ready to welcome them and their customers to experience what both of these fantastic brands can do. It’s a wonderful setting to showcase some beautiful audio experiences that will bring customers huge enjoyment for many years, and we hope will either continue or begin a fulfilling journey with Lyngdorf Audio and Steinway Lyngdorf.”

WHAT’S THAT NOISE?

Mains power conditioners are now considered to be essential components in high quality home theatre installations. However, the benefits of power conditioning are seriously compromised when the power cords lack shielding. That’s because unshielded cords act as antennas that conduct high frequency interference from Wi-Fi and other sources into the components, where it can degrade sound and image quality. Even some shielded cords fail to block high frequency interference because their shields are only connected at the wall plug, which is only effective at low frequencies. Properly shielded power cords can make surprising improvements in sonic and visual performance.

The most obvious value provided by mains conditioners is their ability to protect components from damage

but equally valuable, are the sonic and visual improvements that people experience with cleaner power. Those improvements show that residential power is generally noisy and reducing the amount of noise entering a system

transformers, such as those made by Torus Power, are the only type of mains conditioner that can actually reduce the line impedance, resulting in greater current delivery and dynamic impact. They also do an outstanding job of reducing noise and protecting components.

However, isolation transformers have their own limitation, and that is the result of using one isolation transformer to power multiple components. Since the power supplies of the components are connected together without isolation, any noise produced by one of them will spread to the others. As with passive filter type conditioners, providing isolation between components can make further improvements in sound and image quality.

due to voltage spikes and surges. These common over voltage issues can destroy or degrade a component over time or all at once. Less obvious,

usually improves its performance. The key sonic benefit of good power conditioning is the ability to hear quieter sounds, along with a more complex and natural tone quality. Most mains conditioners are passive filters that use inductor coils and capacitors to reduce noise and MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) to suppress voltage spikes. These can provide good value if they are built well, with multiple filters that isolate each component from the others. However, passive filter mains conditioners also share a common limitation in that they increase the impedance of the mains connection, which tends to compress the reproduction of dynamics. Another type of mains conditioner, isolation transformers, are generally more expensive than passive filters and they provide the considerable advantage of not raising the line impedance. Isolation

The goal of providing clean power to a full system of components can best be achieved with properly shielded mains cords that also function as effective noise filters. That is the concept of Wireworld Power Conditioning Cords. Unlike other cords, their advanced designs were developed through direct comparisons to battery power, the ultimate in sonic and visual purity. Wireworld Shielded Mini Power Cords are the world’s only two-conductor cords with true end-to-end shielding. These cords are also flexible enough to use with small components, like streamers, wireless speakers and TV soundbars with figure-8 (IEC-C7) power inlets. Featuring Fluxfield designs and ultraquiet COMPOSILEX insulation, Wireworld three-conductor flat power cords and twoconductor C7 cords extend the functions and benefits of power conditioning all the way to each component’s power inlet.

NAVIGATING THE TECHNICAL LANDSCAPE

Kevan Sproston AKA ‘Cable Kev,’ International Sales Manager at Kordz, takes into cable capability.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, understanding the intricacies of cable choice and installation can make all the difference in delivering top-notch solutions. So, let’s explore what installers should be aware of when it comes to offering some indispensable tips for selection and installation, how to avoid common mistakes, and perhaps glimpsing into the future.

QUALITY AND CERTIFICATIONS MATTER

Installers need to be acutely aware of one golden rule: quality and certifications matter. It’s no longer just about getting cables from point A to point B; it’s about ensuring that those cables are up to the task, reliable and safe. This brings us to a critical aspect—fire certification. As responsible installers, it’s our duty to prioritise safety. Fire-rated cables are paramount,

especially when dealing with AV systems in residential and commercial settings. The peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ve chosen the right cables that meet stringent fire safety standards is invaluable. It’s not just about delivering an exceptional experience; it’s about ensuring the wellbeing of your clients and your business since you could be left responsible should any unfortunate event occur.

ALMOST ALWAYS CAT6A

When it comes to choice, one Cat cable stands out from the crowd, Cat6A. Bandwidth is king, and Cat6A reigns supreme. This cable, with its enhanced capabilities, ensures longevity and ample bandwidth overhead, allowing you to be future ready without making infrastructure changes for your installations.

ESSENTIAL CABLES AND CONNECTIONS SEPTEMBER 2023 55 essentialinstall.com @Install_mag /Essentialinstall

supposed to use non RJ45 connectors. Cat8 is undoubtedly faster at 40Gigabits per second, but in terms of distance only has a third of the reach of Cat6A.

COMMON MISTAKES IN CABLE INSTALLATION

Mistakes happen, even to the best of us. When it comes to cable installation, a few missteps can lead to headaches down the line. One common blunder is neglecting cable management in the rush to get the job done. It might seem trivial, but organised and properly routed cables not only improve aesthetics but also prevent signal interference and facilitate maintenance. Another pitfall is overlooking cable bend radius. Cables aren’t meant to be contortionists and excessive bending can degrade performance. My motto is ‘fit and forget, not plug and pray’. To that end make sure you install headroom in the system so you’re not simply teetering on the edge of a system working and make sure you thoroughly test your cabling, but a £5 wire mapping continuity checker for Cat cable isn’t good enough. Invest in a quality cable tester or buy pretested patch leads from a reputable manufacturer. Time spent in testing is seldom wasted and will prevent costly return site visits and disgruntled end users. Improper termination can lead to signal loss and frustration, so take the time to master the art of termination.

INNOVATIONS AND ULTRA-THIN WONDERS

Having been in structured cabling since its infancy, not much has changed and evolution has been slow but there is one noteworthy development: the emergence of ultra-thin Cat6 and Cat6A cables. These sleek and slender marvels are the perfect fit for rack building, tight cabledense runs and tricky installations. Imagine the ease of routing and installing cables in confined spaces without compromising performance. It’s a testament to the industry’s commitment to streamlining processes, optimising installations by continual innovation.

In conclusion, the journey is one of constant learning, adaptation and innovation. In the current climate, prioritising quality and certifications, particularly fire certification, is non-negotiable. Cat6A has taken the throne as the go-to choice for networking, offering longevity and bandwidth overhead to ensure your installations are future ready. Learning from common mistakes ensures that your work stands the test of time, while exciting innovations like ultra-thin cables reshape the way we approach installations.

So, my fellow cable lovers (and loathers), let’s embrace the evolving landscape with open arms and a passion for excellence.

INSIDE OUT: WHY CABLE CHOICE MATTERS

CONSIDER DUCT GRADE

By contrast, if cables are being buried in the ground, in ducting/conduit, or in more challenging environments, then the best advice is to use something more robust such as duct grade cables.

They have a double jacket, with the outer jacket being made from a heavy-duty PE material that’s resistant to water, moisture, and UV light, to ensure that cables can be pulled through ducts.

WATERTIGHT CONNECTIVITY

As summers continue to get warmer and last longer, many are making the most of the finer conditions by creating liveable outdoor spaces for relaxation and entertainment. In essence, they’re building an extra room on the outside that combines the living room, kitchen-diner, and recreation area.

OFTEN OVERLOOKED

To optimise functionality in these spaces, the right equipment needs to be selected. From speakers and lighting, to sound equipment and Wi-Fi, they must be suitable for the outdoor environment where changing weather and ground conditions come into play. Interestingly, as people focus on the big ‘wow’ devices such as HD TVs and sound systems, one of the most common mistakes is made on cable selection, which is in fact the linchpin to connect it all together.

WISE CHOICES, AVOID LSNH

It’s advisable to avoid cables with Low Smoke Non-Halogen (LSNH) jackets in external environments, otherwise the jackets can discolour, become brittle, crack over time, and then cause malfunctions. From a safety perspective, if the jacket fails it can expose the core bundle inside.

USE POLYETHYLENE (PE)

Where cables are being routed ultimately determines the best type to use. If cables are being run above ground, along walls, fences, or roofs - where they’re exposed to the elementsthen external grade polyethylene (PE) jacketed cables are recommended. They have good water and UV resistance, remain flexible and thus easy to route, and are competitively priced.

Make choices designed especially for these tasks. For example, Webro has a specific range of duct grade cables, some of which also include the latest water blocking technology. They have a dry, water blocking fleece tape that’s wrapped around the core bundle. It only becomes active if moisture comes into contact with the tape, which then causes it to swell to form a blocking layer of gel. This immediately stops moisture migrating through cables, and enables the equipment that they’re connecting to function without interruption. The upshot for installers when terminating cables is that by using this technology, they don’t have to worry about making a mess or cleaning up cables that have old-fashioned petroleum jelly inside them.

CONCLUSION

Choosing the right cables for your outdoor living spaces is crucial for ensuring reliable connectivity and durability. By considering factors such as environmental conditions, routing requirements, and compatibility with devices, you can optimise the performance of your outdoor setup.

Chris Mellor-Dolman, Head of Marketing and Gary Banfield, Business Development Manager at Webro consider the importance of making the right exterior cabling choices.

FIVE PROVEN STRATEGIES FOR HIRING AND RETAINING TOP TALENT

David Fell, experienced and successful systems integrator with in-depth knowledge of technology, business development, and business strategy on a global scale, continues his ‘Installer Academy’ series exclusively for EI.

As a business owner or manager, you know that your team is the backbone of your company. Without top talent, your business may struggle to achieve its goals and remain competitive in today’s fast-paced market. But finding and retaining top talent can be challenging, especially in a job market where competition for skilled workers is fierce. Fortunately, there are proven strategies that you can use to attract and retain the best people for your organisation. Whether you’re a small startup or a large corporation, these tips can help you build a team of high-performing individuals who are committed to your organisation’s success.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HIRING AND RETAINING TOP TALENT FOR BUSINESSES

Top talent brings creativity, innovation and a drive for excellence to an organisation. They possess the skills, knowledge and experience needed to take on critical roles and drive business growth. Without top talent, companies may struggle to meet their goals, lag behind in innovation and lose their competitive edge.

Moreover, hiring and training new employees is costly, both in terms of time and money. It’s much more cost-effective to retain top talent and invest in their development and growth within the organisation. When employees see that their company values and invests in them, they are likelier to stay loyal and committed to the organisation. So, it’s crucial for companies to focus on hiring and retaining top talent to achieve long-term success.

OFFER COMPETITIVE COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS PACKAGES

Research shows that salary and benefits are among the top factors employees consider when looking for a job or deciding to stay with a company. To attract top talent, it’s essential to offer a salary that is competitive with the industry average, if not better. In addition to salary, companies should provide comprehensive benefits packages that include health insurance, retirement plans and paid time off. Companies can also offer additional perks like flexible work arrangements, gym memberships and professional development opportunities. These perks can help set your

organisation apart from competitors and create a positive work environment that attracts and retains top talent. It’s worth noting that compensation and benefits packages aren’t the only factors employees consider when deciding whether to stay with a company. A positive work culture, growth opportunities and a supportive work environment are also critical factors that can impact employee retention.

CREATE A POSITIVE COMPANY CULTURE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees want to work for a company that aligns with their values and provides a supportive and inclusive work environment. A positive company culture can also help employees feel more engaged and motivated to contribute to the organisation’s success. To create a positive company culture, companies should start by defining their values and mission. These values and missions should be communicated to all employees and reflected in the company’s policies, practices and day-today operations. Companies should also foster a culture of transparency, open communication,

and collaboration. Encouraging employee feedback and involvement in decision-making can help employees feel more valued and invested in the company’s success. Creating a positive work environment involves more than just the physical space. Companies should focus on creating a work environment that is safe, comfortable and conducive to productivity. This can include providing ergonomic workstations, natural lighting and flexible work arrangements. Companies should also prioritise work-life balance and support employees’ mental health and well-being.

PRIORITISE EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

Companies that prioritise employee development and growth opportunities are more likely to attract and retain top talent. Investing in employee development benefits not only the employee but also the company. Employees with opportunities to learn and grow are more motivated, engaged and productive, which can drive business growth and success. To prioritise employee development, companies should provide regular training and development opportunities that align with employees’ career goals and interests. This can include workshops, conferences and mentorship programs. Companies should also provide clear paths for career advancement and offer opportunities for employees to take on new challenges and responsibilities.

USE EFFECTIVE RECRUITMENT AND HIRING PRACTICES

This can include providing clear job descriptions, timely communication, and a smooth application process. Companies should also use a variety of recruitment channels to reach a diverse pool of candidates. Traditional job postings and recruiting events can be effective, but companies should also consider using social media, employee referrals and targeted advertising to reach a broader audience. It’s also essential to use effective hiring practices to ensure that the right candidates are selected for the job. This can include conducting thorough interviews, skills assessments and background checks. Companies should also prioritise diversity and inclusion in their hiring practices to ensure that candidates from all backgrounds and experiences are considered.

PROVIDE ONGOING SUPPORT AND RECOGNITION TO RETAIN TOP TALENT

Employees want to feel valued and appreciated for their contributions to the organisation. Companies that provide regular feedback, recognition, and rewards are more likely to retain top talent. To provide ongoing support and recognition, companies should prioritise regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback that helps employees

grow and develop. Companies should also recognise employee achievements and provide rewards that align with employees’ interests and preferences. This can include financial incentives, time off, or professional development opportunities.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

In addition, there are several additional tips that companies can use to attract and retain top talent.

• Offering flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or flexible schedules.

• Providing opportunities for volunteerism and community involvement.

• Creating a diverse and inclusive work environment.

• Encouraging work-life balance and supporting employee mental health and well-being.

• Providing opportunities for professional development and career growth.

• Offering competitive salaries and benefits packages that reflect the industry average or better.

Hiring and retaining top talent is critical for business success. Top talent brings creativity, innovation and a drive for excellence to an organisation. They possess the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to take on critical roles and drive business growth. Companies prioritising hiring and retaining top talent are more likely to achieve their goals, remain competitive, and achieve long-term success.

THE POWER OF HOME CINEMA SYNTHESIS

A JBL Synthesis Dolby Atmos surround system makes visitors a part of the movie at the Reference Sounds Experience Center.

In 2020, Reference Sounds – a Benelux distributor for a number of high-end audio manufacturers – began construction on its new Experience Center in Almere, the Netherlands. Designed to provide the company’s dealers and other partners with the ultimate environment for experiencing its lineup of high-end audio products – while also showcasing its capabilities in delivering complete custom solutions – the showroom offers a variety of fully optimised rooms for stereo listening. Its crown jewel,

however, is the Reference Sounds Cinema. Built in collaboration with Exult, the company’s own interior builder, the six-seat home theatre showcases Reference Sounds’ expertise in acoustics and interior design, while highlighting the performance of JBL Synthesis cinema systems, which are at the core of the company’s cinema portfolio. Here, visitors are treated to an immersive audio experience delivered by a JBL Synthesis 11.4.6 Dolby Atmos surround system.

64 SEPTEMBER 2023 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY

CHALLENGES

“Every good cinema is a tight collaboration between a number of elements – room dimensions, acoustics, visual aesthetics, viewing angles, and of course, well-engineered speakers and audio components that deliver the immersive sound that transports listeners into another dimension,” says Michael Huigen, Founder of Reference Sounds. “Without senseprovoking sound, the visual spectacle of film is lost, so selecting the right audio equipment is vital. That’s why Reference Sounds has been a proud distributor of JBL Synthesis for years. More than offering great products, the company provides perfectly coordinated systems that are instrumental in engineering the ultimate cinema.

“Not only do JBL Synthesis speakers provide well-controlled dispersion, but no other brand on the market so effortlessly reproduces the myriad of sounds in movies and soundtracks – from gunshots to flyovers. And there is really only one way to truly convey the power and immersive energy of JBL Synthesis systems to our dealers; they have to experience it for themselves in a home cinema. At the Reference Sounds Experience Center, they can do just that.”

SOLUTION

In the 21-channel theatre, Reference Sounds is using three JBL 4349 2-way 12in Studio Monitor loudspeakers for the front right, left, and centre channels. Eight SCL-4 2-way in-wall speakers are being used for the wides and surround channels, while six SCL-5 two-way in-ceiling speakers deliver the Dolby Atmos experience. For a seamless surround sound experience that covers the entire room, the SCL-4 and SCL-5 use the patented JBL 2409H 1in compression driver and 7in Advanced Aluminum Matrix cone woofers, while their High-Definition Imaging (HDI) horn ensures smooth dispersion. All speakers are hidden behind acoustic transparent fabric for a clean look.

To deliver powerful bass, Reference Sounds is relying on four JBL Synthesis’ SSW-2 dual 12in passive subwoofers, each placed on a special insulating platform in a different corner of the room. The system is completed by an SDP-75 immersive surround sound processor, three SDA-2200 Class G power amplifiers for the front channels, two SDA-7120 Class G power amplifiers for the surround and ceiling channels, and two SA4-D power amplifiers for the subwoofers. The company calibrated the surround system using the SDP-75’s built-in room calibration function.

RESULTS

“We are incredibly proud of the Reference Sounds Cinema, which is an absolute feat that merges technology, acoustics, and interior design into an enchanting audiovisual illusion,” says Michael. “Everyone who’s experienced

it has been floored by the phenomenal audio performance. When you take a seat in the cinema, the sound doesn’t just come from above, in front, or behind you – it actually happens to you. It’s everywhere and delivers an emotional impact that truly makes you a part of the movie. This is a direct result of the quality of JBL Synthesis audio components, speaker placement, calibration and room acoustics. Our Experience Center opened in 2021, and it’s no surprise that the Reference Sounds Cinema has become the star of the show. It’s proven to be a powerful tool in demonstrating to our dealers just what JBL Synthesis is capable of.”

Henley Audio has announced the imminent availability of the Musical Fidelity A1 integrated amplifier. Unveiled to the press and public at Munich High End 2023, this is one of the most anticipated model reintroductions of recent years, says the company.

True to its original intention as an amplifier designed simply to make music, the A1’s Class A topology and recognisable industrial design have been updated only to meet modern technical expectations. The A1 (SRP £1,499.00) has been created to deliver a sweet, fluid, characterful sound with a beautiful soundstage surrounding natural instruments.

Key A1 features include 25W (8Ω) pure Class A integrated amplifier, ability to dynamically

‘slide’ into Class B when the allowable current draw is exceeded, a built-in low-noise MM/MC compatible phono stage for connecting a turntable and a direct switch on the front panel that bypasses the gain stage before the volume control stage.

The A1 also boasts discrete symmetrical electrical layout featuring 25A Planar Audio transistors in the power stage, low-noise pre-amplifier circuitry taken from the ‘original’ design and also comes with a new remote control for adjusting volume only. The product offers the same industrial design as the original A1, with modifications for better heat management. An updated power supply inspired by the original A1 design, featuring dedicated power supplies for the left and right channel is also included.

The A1’s creator says it sounds sweet and fluid, facilitating a beautiful environment for favourite music to come alive within. When paired with well-matched speakers in a suitably sized room, the product has been created to deliver a warm, full, exciting sound without harshness.

PHASETECH UNLEASHES POWER LUX DSP SUBWOOFERS

Nearly 70 years of audio engineering expertise is represented in the launch of PhaseTech’s Power Lux DSP subwoofers.

Using DSP to control the amplifier and driver, these subwoofers create a new standard for low frequency output and max SPL, says the maker. Power Lux has debuted four models at CEDIA Expo.

The Power Lux DSP subwoofers - the PL-10S and PL-12S compact sealed subs and the PL-10P and PL-12P ported subwoofers have output as low as 17 Hz. Power Lux DSP subs will play louder and go lower than anything in comparable sized cabinets, claims their creator. The DSP subs are also enriched by an integrated 900W peak power amplifier.

Enclosed in either a sealed or ported design, each featuring a 10in or 12in long-throw micagraphite poly cone with NBR Surround, the speakers are equipped with a dedicated app (iOS and Android compatible) which is used to control level, phase, EQ, high/low pass crossovers, signal sensing auto turn on/off, and user-

generated presets for audio personalisation. The subs come with LFE and stereo inputs/outputs. The inputs and outputs have independent high pass and low pass control making the subs usable as part of a sub/sat system or can be daisy chained with multiple subs.

The Power Lux subwoofers and Premier Lux speakers offer contemporary finishes with standard or custom colours. The subs come standard in a classic black finish or can be custom painted in any matte or high-gloss colour.

The complementing Premier Lux audiophile speakers come in an array of configurations: bookshelf, center channel, surround, and tower. These speakers come equipped with one or more patented 6.5in tri-laminate Kevlar RPF glass fiber flat-piston woofer, and 28 mm highperformance soft dome tweeter(s). The flat plane surface of the woofer coupled with the Absolute Phase crossovers amplifies vertical and horizontal dispersion patterns, introducing strong placement flexibility and a wide sweet spot.

LINDY’S PORT BLOCKERS TARGET CYBERSECURITY AND DATA PROTECTION

Lindy has released Port Blockers, a physical response to emerging market trends that prioritise data protection.

In an era characterised by unprecedented digital connectivity, safeguarding sensitive data has become a paramount concern for individuals and organisations.

The Lindy Port Blockers have been designed to exemplify a proactive approach to countering the escalating threats posed by unauthorised data access, particularly through physical ports on electronic devices.

These port blockers serve as a versatile tool for mitigating the risks associated with physical data breaches. They function as a mechanical barrier, rendering unused ports on laptops, computers and other devices inaccessible.

To use, users should simply plug the ‘keylock’ into the port, release the latch and the lock remains in place. The key is then plugged back into the lock to remove.

Market trends underscore the pressing need for such innovative solutions. The rise of remote work, bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has exponentially

SWITCH TO SNAP ONE

Snap One partners can now tackle the most demanding networking jobs following the launch of several new series of high-powered, OvrCcompatible Araknis switches and routers.

These commercial-grade switches and routers enable high-speed processes and communication and support advanced use cases such as building management systems, 4×4 Wi-Fi 6 and highbandwidth installations while ensuring partners can complete jobs of any size or complexity.

To support technologies like 4×4 Wi-Fi 6, the new Araknis 620 Series managed switches provide 8 or 24 RJ45 ports with 1/2.5Gbps capability, plus two 10Gbps SFP+ uplinks.

In addition to full Layer 2 functionality such as MAC-based VLANs, link aggregation, QoS, IGMP Snooping, STP and LLDP, the 620 series also provides some Layer 3 functions including static IP routing. Each port supports the 802.3BT Type 3 PoE++ standard, providing up to 60W of power per port to enable new applications like PoE lighting, surveillance and network audio.

The new Araknis 920 Series offers OvrCcompatible 12- and 24-port managed switches that provide RJ45 ports with 10Gbps connections and 90W Type 4 PoE++ capability. Both the 12-

expanded the attack surface for cybercriminals. Consequently, cybersecurity strategies are evolving beyond software-based protection, embracing hardware-level fortification.

Lindy’s Port Blockers’ user-friendly design and compatibility with a wide range of devices make them a practical choice for safeguarding sensitive data across industries. As regulatory frameworks like GDPR and HIPAA impose stringent data protection standards, the Lindy Port Blockers provide a tangible means of compliance.

As threats continue to evolve, embracing innovative solutions like the Lindy Port Blockers becomes a strategic imperative for anyone seeking to navigate the complex landscape of cybersecurity with confidence.

Lindy lindy.co.uk

and 24-port models also offer expansion modules to add one or two slots for 100Gbps QSFP28 uplinks, respectively.

The 920 Series provides Layer 3 functionality including interVLAN routing, static routing and multicast routing, plus typical Layer 2 features such as MoIPv3 required ACL’s, IGMP snooping and querier, MAC-based VLANs, link aggregation, QoS, STP and LLDP.

For high-bandwidth instals, the new 220 Series Single-WAN VPN Router features 2.5Gbps speeds and support for basic VPN capabilities and advanced network functionality such as VLANs, QoS, and port forwarding.

For larger projects requiring multi-gig support, the new 520 Series Dual-WAN VPN Router supports a full 2.5Gbps throughput with a 1Gbps secondary WAN for load balancing or link-failover applications.

OvrC Pro provides enhanced system health, troubleshooting capabilities and diagnostic data designed to improve remote support.

THE CHORD COMPANY OFFERS PRICE CUTS

Chord Company has dramatically lowered the ownership cost of XLPE-technology interconnects, with the launch of the new ClearwayX ARAY Analogue RCA (£130 1m).

The new cable brings Chord Company’s advanced XLPE insulation to its lowest ever cost, with prices starting from £105 (0.5m) for the British-made cable.

GET KITTED OUT BY YALE

Yale has launched an exclusive Yale Smart Motion CCTV & Door Camera Kit designed for professional installers.

The kit will be exclusively available to trade members only and has been designed with installers in mind, providing everything needed to install a full CCTV solution on a standard residential property within one box.

As well as dedicated Yale after sales support, the kit also comes with a five-year warranty, up from the standard two-years, which can be transferred to the end user to reduce the need for call backs.

The Yale Smart Motion CCTV & Door Camera Kit comprises four Smart Motion Detection cameras to monitor the property from the front, back and side, whilst the All-in-One Camera with two-way talk can be positioned at the front door to ensure all entry points are covered.

All the necessary cables and fixings are also included, whilst the XVR recorder has eight channels to allow for future expansion of the security set up (which can support up to eight Yale wired cameras and two Wi-Fi cameras)

Yale Smart Motion CCTV allows users to check in on their homes from anywhere via a smartphone using the Yale View app. The Smart Motion Detection featuring AI technology focuses on human shapes, whilst the Dual Tech corroborates movement to limit the number of false alarms and the bright white lights act as a deterrent to any potential intruders.

The ClearwayX ARAY Analogue RCA is now the most affordable way to benefit from Chord Company’s recently introduced cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) dielectric. The cable also enjoys the latest enhanced ARAY geometry, shielding systems and factory technologies.

ClearwayX ARAY Analogue RCA improves on its predecessor, already a What Hi-Fi? ‘Best interconnect’ for six successive years (20172022).

Despite the low cost, the ClearwayX ARAY Analogue RCA is handmade in the Wiltshire factory and offers good value for money.

In addition, the cable benefits from Chord Company’s proprietary ChorAlloy-plated Chord VEE3 RCA connectors and is available in a variety of useful lengths, with custom runs and terminations to order, including DIN and XLR.

The ClearwayX ARAY Analogue RCA’s achievable price point gives it versatility across a wide range of AV systems and components.

Chord Company chord.co.uk

Also included in the kit is a Yale All-in-One Camera that can be installed outside or inside the home, but is recommended as part of this kit to provide cover for the front door.

The two-way talk, 1080HD resolution, IP65 rating, 80dB siren and bright security light work together to offer a solution in partnership with the CCTV cameras to protect a property.
