We are pleased to announce the launch of the first HDBaseT™3 matrix product to the market
Using HDBaseT™3 technology, these powerful HDBaseT™ matrix support uncompromised 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 resolutions over distances up to 100m over a CAT6A. The new HMX88-18G and HMX44-18G come into their own with advanced audio features specifically designed for maximising the integration of AV sources in the modern home. Enhanced audio routing is achieved through the integrated audio matrix. The inclusion of a 1Gb Ethernet channel allows for LAN serving to all HDBT outputs / zones as required, IR and RS-232 pass-through, advanced EDID management, and PoC provide the ultimate flexibility.
The combination of these technology features enable our installation partners the ability to create a truly immersive AV experience throughout the home.

TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER: SEE YOU AT EI LIVE! 2024
As we stand on the cusp of another exciting show, the anticipation for EI Live! 2024 is palpable. The premier event for the AV and home automation industry is just around the corner, set to take place on September 18-19 at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre. For installers, integrators, and industry professionals, EI Live! is not just an event—it’s an essential opportunity to engage, learn and elevate our collective craft.
EI Live! is renowned for showcasing the latest innovations and releases in our sector. This year promises to be no exception, with a host of new products and technologies making their debut. Attendees will have the chance to explore cutting-edge solutions that are poised to redefine the landscape of smart home and AV installations. From advanced automation systems to stateof-the-art audio-visual equipment, the exhibition floor will be brimming with opportunities to discover and interact with the latest offerings from top manufacturers.
However, EI Live! is about more than just new products. It’s a hub for knowledge sharing and professional development. The event will feature a comprehensive program of talks and demonstrations, providing valuable insights into the future of our industry. These sessions are designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills needed to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving market. Expert speakers will cover a range of topics, from emerging trends and technologies to best practices and case studies. This is a unique chance to gain first-hand knowledge from some of the leading minds in our field.
PEOPLE POWERED
But above all, EI Live! underscores the importance of our industry’s most valuable asset: its people. In an age of digital communication and remote working, the value of face-to-face interaction cannot be overstated. The connections we make, the conversations we have and the experiences we share are the bedrock of our industry’s strength and growth. It is through these interactions that we learn, innovate and progress. As our team has travelled around the UK in the first part of this year, the importance of these interactions has been
underlined and we have noticed a fresh impetus for increased collaboration across installers and in fact the whole industry.
It’s well worth reflecting on our own careers in the AV and home automation sector. We are reminded of the countless colleagues and contacts who have influenced our paths. The knowledge and insights gained from these interactions are invaluable, but can get overlooked in busy day to day business. Whether it’s a piece of advice from a fellow installer, a collaborative project with a partner, or a brainstorming session with a mentor, each exchange contributes to our professional development and, by extension, the success of the projects we are involved with.
EI Live! offers a unique platform to foster these interactions. It is a gathering of likeminded professionals who share a passion for excellence and innovation. By coming together, we have the opportunity to learn from each other, share our experiences, and collectively push the boundaries of what is possible in our industry. This sense of community and collaboration is what makes our industry so vibrant and dynamic.
So, as we prepare for EI Live! 2024, I urge all installers and industry professionals to seize this opportunity. Attend the talks, engage with the demonstrations, explore the new releases, and most importantly, connect with your peers. Together, we can build a stronger, more innovative industry.
In the words of Henry Ford, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
Let’s get together at EI Live! 2024 and work towards a future where our industry thrives through collaboration and shared knowledge. See you there!

TRANSFORMING SPACES OF COMFORT
Together For Cinema completes two new installations.
The beginning of summer 2024 saw Together For Cinema install cinema rooms in East Anglia Children’s Hospice (EACH) in Milton, Cambridge, and Newcastle’s Marie Curie Hospice, taking its current total to 44 cinema rooms.
The cinema room at EACH was originally constructed in 2019 and had become a vital space where children and their families found joy
and solace amidst challenging times. However, with the passage of time, the equipment and the room itself needed a significant upgrade.
Together For Cinema called on local AV integration company, thinkingbricks, for the project, which saw the installation of cuttingedge audiovisual equipment, all generously donated by various companies.
Ian Trudgeon and Aaron Clarke, directors at thinkingbricks, aimed to make the Den at EACH Milton more user-friendly by simplifying access to content with an Apple TV and Control4 system. “The new ultra short throw PX1 laser projector from Hisense offers clear visuals even in a fully lit room, perfect for users with mobility needs,” says Aaron. “With the updated Denon AVR and a simple user guide, the room now offers an improved and accessible experience for everyone. It was a real pleasure to collaborate on this project.”
The newly refurbished cinema room is more than just a space for entertainment; it is a haven where children, their families and hospice staff can escape, even if just for a moment, into the magical worlds that films create. This respite is invaluable, offering moments of joy and normally in an environment normally dominated by the stresses of illness.
The project at Marie Curie Hospice, meanwhile, turned an unused space into a vibrant cinema room, offering patients and their families a place to escape, connect, and create cherished memories.
Due to delays with the original installer, it wasn’t until October 2023 that Martin Wakefield of Wakefields Smarter Home Technology was able to visit the Marie Curie hospice, which is just a couple of miles from his showroom in Newcastle. Already familiar with the hospice, Martin’s visit was very positive, despite challenges posed by the room’s size and shape. His vision for the space grew more ambitious as the project progressed and the expertise increased with Lesley McDine from Fleur Interiors, a renowned interior designer, and Dan Clint, a lighting consultant from CP Lighting, joining the project. Together, their combined skills led to an ambitious design that exceeded all expectations.
With the support of generous donations, Martin’s team equipped the room with top-tier audiovisual technology. A Philips Professional Displays 98in screen, a Denon AVR, an Origin Acoustics speaker system, Silent Gliss curtains and tracking, and control supplied by Control4 now create an immersive entertainment experience for all who use it.
“Creating this cinema room at Marie Curie Hospice is a testament to the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together,” says Ian Morrish, founder of Together For Cinema. “The room isn’t just
about movies; it’s about creating moments of happiness and connection for families during some of their most difficult times.”
The installation process was more than just a technical upgrade—it was a labour of love and community effort. Wakefields Smarter Home Technology played a pivotal role, bringing in their expertise to ensure the room would meet the specific needs of hospice patients. It is now a multifunctional space, where patients can enjoy everything from films to music, making it a versatile hub of entertainment.
“Working on this project has been incredibly rewarding,” says Martin. “To see the smiles on the faces of patients and their families when they first experience the room is priceless. It’s about more than just technology; it’s about creating a positive impact on people’s lives.”
The installations are also part of a broader commitment by Together For Cinema to create new spaces and to revisit and refurbish previously installed cinema rooms, ensuring that each remains a source of joy and comfort. “This isn’t just a one-time gift,” Ian notes. “We’re committed to maintaining these spaces, so they continue to serve their purpose for years to come.”
“Working with the Marie Curie Hospice team has been an absolute pleasure, and hearing that the new Cinema Room is already creating memories for families is a reward far beyond financial, concludes Martin. “We’re already looking forward to the next project!”
The collaborative effort behind the projects reflects the commitment to supporting hospices that provide critical care and support to those with life-threatening conditions. By bringing together industry professionals and leveraging their expertise and resources, Together For Cinema continues to demonstrate how meaningful contributions can have a lasting impact on communities.
If you’re interested in learning more about getting involved with Together For Cinema, Ian Morrish will be at the EI Live Show, ready to discuss opportunities and answer any questions. Visit him on Stand 87 to explore how you or your company can contribute to the cause. Whether you’re an AV professional or just passionate about making a difference, this is a perfect opportunity to engage directly with the TFC founder. Together For Cinema togetherforcinema.co.uk

THE KALEIDESCAPE STRATO V STRIDES OUT!
Our team recently held a week-long series of events welcoming a new member of the Kaleidescape family, the Strato V. Joining the party were Tim Barnes, VP International & Marine Sales and Priscilla Morgan, Chief Operating Officer, visiting from the U.S. to introduce this new, lower cost of entry product and underline why Kaleidescape is the best option for high-quality content.
If you have not got across the details yet, the Kaleidescape Strato V Movie Player delivers 4K Dolby Vision playback with lossless audio, offering performance and quality at a lower cost of entry. The player, two years in the making, is a direct response to market feedback and is a major launch for the company, hence the presence of both Tim and Priscilla for a weeklong series of presentations and meetings.
Priscilla explains the importance of the launch and the initial reaction to the product: “The UK market is really important to us. We made it a point to come over right at launch to meet with studio partners, Pulse, dealers, designers, integrators and press. This week has been wonderful because we were able to demo the new product, have great conversations, and answer questions. Every session has been
well received, and the one statement we kept hearing was ‘this product is a game changer’.”
There was also news on more content for the Kaleidescape system. Priscilla reveals, “We just signed a major studio and added around 1,000 titles to the UK store – that’s approximately a 20% increase in fantastic content available for our customers. AND we have also launched our new player – Strato V – and for the first time can offer movies in Dolby Vision. Currently, we have over 100 Dolby Vision titles available, with more coming every week.”
Tim explains some of the key attributes installers were keen to learn about the new player: “Strato V is Kaleidescape’s nextgeneration movie player. Providing stunning 4K Dolby Vision playback with lossless audio, Strato V works on its own or as part of a larger Kaleidescape system. Standalone, Strato V has storage for approximately 10 referencequality 4K movies and downloads movies in as little as 10 minutes during playback, without sacrificing performance.
“Kaleidescape has delivered on what customers have been asking for: Dolby Vision with lossless audio at a lower cost of entry. Strato V is perfect for new customers, and if they choose to expand their catalogue, they can easily do so by adding Terra Prime servers for more storage and additional players for multiple viewing zones.”
With Strato V now available to order, the support and continued evolution of the product will not end there. Tim underlines: “Kaleidescape provides software updates periodically throughout the year that are automatically rolled out to products, including Strato V, which provide enhancements to user experience, new features and bug fixes. There are no costs associated with customers to receive these updates, and no action is required.
“We are also updating the formatting of some of the HD titles on the Kaleidescape movie store to ensure the best possible playback with our Strato V player, thereby replacing some older HD authoring formats. As always, we’re focused on making sure that the movies that are most valuable to our customers are available to them.”
Priscilla underlines further abilities of Strato V: “Dolby Vision is an exciting technology that improves video quality by employing a dynamic set of video parameters. Combined with lossless audio and reference video, Kaleidescape continues its mission to deliver the best possible version of the movie.”

Mike Beatty, Pulse Cinemas Managing Director (Projects Team), immensely enjoyed introducing this new part of the Kaleidescape story to dealers. “We were confident the impact would be positive, but the reaction has surpassed our expectations; this is indeed a game changer for the brand and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”
The Strato V can currently be seen on demo at Pulse Cinemas HQ in the Main Cinema,
and during the launch week the team took the opportunity to do some A/B comparisons with Apple TV+, usually reckoned to be one of the better quality streaming services. Kapes Patel, Pulse Cinemas, Business Development and Technical Director, explains, “The impact of these comparisons surprised many. We used some clips from Top Gun: Maverick and The Greatest Showman. The image with the Kaleidescape is clearly more natural and smoother. Perhaps the biggest difference is in the audio. The Strato V delivers more immersion and needs far less volume to do it. Come and experience it for yourself, and we are confident you will be impressed.
“For me, as well as the obvious implication for projects on a budget or rooms that are not the main viewing space, don’t forget if you are creating a high-performance cinema, you need to spec a high-performance source to get the most out of those other elements: projector, speakers. This new price point opens up options there as well. From our initial stock run, these units are being snapped up fast, so get in touch to get involved with the Kaleidescape Strato V!”

JBL SYNTHESIS
Building on the original high-end home cinema systems created in the early 1990s, the latest JBL Synthesis systems are more versatile design solutions from a manufacturer with roots deeper in pro-cinema than any rival. Given this provenance, the products are 100% engineering-led, using transducer technology straight from the commercial playbook: high quality compression and cone drivers, crossovers and innovative horn designs. These are discreet,
performance-led tools from engineers not marketeers, including speakers, processing and amplification, created to work together as a synthesised system, and with abundant data for RP22 design practice. With complete systems spanning £35k to over £275k, JBL Synthesis is a scalable turnkey design solution which fulfils its long-held potential, adding real value to the experiences of end users and integrators alike.
First name, last word: matching speakers, processing and amplification make JBL Synthesis the only complete, scalable, highend home cinema solution
JBL MA SERIES AVRS
Developed at Northridge, California, the featurerich MA Series spans a range of competitive price points from £499 to £1,899 inc. All five AVRs are equipped with Class D amplification, Dolby Atmos® and DTS decoding (including DTS:X), high resolution 192kHz 24-bit DACs, a plethora of inputs, ARC and Bluetooth, complemented by rising power capabilities and channel counts from 5.2 to 9.2. Above the entry model (MA310), the lineup offers 8K video processing and connectivity (HDMI 2.1), HDR10+ and Wi-Fi for network streaming. In addition, the line topping MA7100 and MA9100 models are DIRAC Live ready and are compatible with all major automation systems. SIM2
Integrators can now harness the genius of SIM2’s engineering at more affordable £10£15k price points, with choices more compact and aesthetically pleasing than offerings from rival brands. In every SIM2, from luxury to entry levels, the same winning formula of excellent optics, laser hybrid light sources, large format 0.66” 4K UHD DMDs and proprietary HDR management software is at work. This means that SIM2’s acknowledged leadership in perfecting High Dynamic Range (HDR) can be utilised in almost every custom application, not just the large, luxury integrations for which it is justly famous. Realistically, SIM2 offers you the opportunity to enhance the great majority of your projects with a single high-quality brand.
Join your experience with CUK’s on stand 114 to explore the best project outcomes in resi and commercial

ARCHITETTURA SONORA
Outdoor audio is supplied with a bewildering choice of products, all of them challenged by free-air acoustics that can ruin best laid plans and reputations. Supported by matching subs, Architettura Sonora’s distinctive on-ground, Sphere, Cylinder, Cube and Cubino models and ceiling/floor Spherina models reflect full-range time-coherent sound outwards with integrity for up to 10 metres in all directions, delivering high volume levels without distortion reliably over many years. Unlike the standard sat/sub fair, nothing from Architettura Sonora is mass produced, everything custom finished. The brand brings something truly unique to your projects while meeting the demands for exclusivity and individuality from designers and customers.
LODE
LODE’s specialised multizone music streaming architecture is positioned in the market between mainstream multiroom solutions and ‘audiophile’ single room streamers. Designed and built entirely in the UK and with local support, LODE integrates with all the leading home control systems to deliver high resolution audio up to 32bit/48kHz, transforming the experience of music streaming in premium smart home projects.
POWERSOFT
As the scale of systems deployment in homes, cinemas, and gardens continues to grow, so does the demand for more agile high-power
delivery. When a typical 1000W sub amp takes up 2U of space, the same space can house up to 24,000 watts of cool-running Powersoft amplification. Even though this is an extreme example, an 8-channel Powersoft amplifier like the UNICA 8K8, provides 1,000W per channel from just 1U of rack space. That’s 8,000W in 1U compared with 8,000W in 16U! No contest when power density is a significant element in large-scale residential and marine projects. Powersoft’s amplifiers also employ advanced power sharing, so rather than having to divide the budget evenly between channels, you can assign power asymmetrically according to need.
FOCAL
The high-performance audio engineering that has won huge respect from the world’s audiophiles is available in an all-encompassing range of architectural speakers, from the super high-end 1000 Series ‘Utopia’ IW/IC models for luxury stereo and home cinema applications, to the 100 series for discreet high-quality sound around the home, and the Littora range of outdoor systems.
NAIM
Exclusively, CUK is able to unite Focal’s high quality architectural speaker line-up with a matching range of flexible, CI-facing amplification and source products from sister company Naim Audio. Designed to dovetail with Focal speakers, the newly arrived Naim CI Series comprises a streamer/amplifier called the CI-Uniti 102 and matching mono and eight-channel amp platforms, the CI-NAP 101 and CI-NAP 108. Enabling easy set-up, Focal/Naim CI systems share ‘Focal & Naim Manager’ software and a ‘Speakers Profiles’ feature, created to help you customise single or multi-room installations. It’s controlled through the ‘Focal & Naim’ app and also compatible with home automation drivers for Crestron, Control4, RTI, Savant, and Elan.
VSSL AND TRUAUDIO
Fully integrated music streaming architecture is offered by VSSL’s audio streaming amplifiers and ‘SX’ wireless speakers, soundbar and subwoofer. Using proprietary native streaming™ technology, the system allows users to stream from Apps such as Airplay2, Spotify Connect, Chromecast built-in or Alexa Cast. Voice control is also possible through Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant.
From the same stable, TruAudio’s vast range of architectural speakers includes invisible, home
theatre, in-ceiling, in-room, in-wall, surround, subwoofers, outdoor and multizone amps.
MAIOR
Maior’s range of silent motorised TV lift systems includes fully concealed ceiling mounted systems, flush mounted ceiling models, fixed telescopic ceiling-mounted systems, floor and furniture TV lifts. Each solution, which is compact and intuitive to deploy, offers architects, system integrators and customers the power to reimagine spaces within residential developments with the greatest freedom. We’ll be demonstrating the Levante floor mount TV lift at the show.
GARVAN ACOUSTICS
GARVAN’s avantgarde range of speaker designs promises to add artful sophistication to any audio installation and is typified by the extraordinary ‘Goccia’ hanging speakers.
NICE/ELAN
Powerful, scalable and intuitive, NICE/ELAN’s smart control systems combine wired and wireless infrastructure with propriety control protocols, integrating one-touch access, facial recognition and voice technology for a truly intelligent, fully personalised home control experience. We’ll be introducing the ELAN ecosystem at EI Live!, including the extraordinarily capable HR-40 remote control.
FURMAN
Furman’s industry-leading power conditioning units provide power and protection to entire equipment racks while its power sequencing products assist professional, high-performance installations by turning power on and off in an orderly fashion, preventing damage from equipment ‘popping’.

Future Automation (Stand 150) is using the show to introduce several new products including the Architectural Easel Display Stand and UniChannel: The Universal Pocket Shade System.
The Easel is an architectural display mount inspired by the design of an artist’s easel providing interior designers and architects with an attractive display mount that doesn’t rely on a wall or cabinetry to incorporate into a room. The Easel looks good from any angle thanks to its thoughtfully engineered back panel and hidden magnetic cable management.
Light washed oak or walnut solid wood finishes bring unique patterns and grain structure to each stand. Mounting a display to the Easel has been made simple thanks to the inclusion of the Future Automation FB49
slim line bracket, which is just 30.3mm deep and compatible with 65in VESA 200x200 to 600x600 displays.
The UniChannel (UCH) system combines a wooden carcass with extruded aluminium side trim profile instead of the traditional all-aluminium construction to create a more flexible, installation friendly and cost-effective pocket shading system. UCH is available in three sizes for single, dual stacked, or dual side-byside shade installations. This gives the option to combine multiple shade fabrics (such as sheer and dimout) inside a single pocket. All models feature plaster-over flanges to make it simple to create a neat pocket that blends seamlessly into the ceiling. The company will also be offering insight into a new TV Cabinet Range Cineair & Cineair Luxe aimed at exterior displays.

SRND Group (Stand 65) is delivering the UK debut of the Planar UltraRes W Series, a range of Ultra-Wide 5K LCD Displays.
Neil Davidson of the SRND, enthuses, “This is a really big one for us as we are launching this massive brand for the luxury living market. As well as partnering with them on the best dvLED wall (the DCI certified Infinity Cinema Wall), at the show we are showing off the 105in 21:9 UltraResW display!
“We think that this is a killer solution for media rooms and small cinemas as it avoids the complexity of projection and gains most of the benefit of dvLED but in a simple contained package – it’s a big TV ultimately.”
Another big UK launch at the show comes in the form of MAG Theatron. MAG is a Ukrainian manufacturer coming from the commercial world to tackle residential with strong value and high-performance cinema speakers. Neil explains, “They have literally thousands of commercial cinemas using their solutions (one of the best-known names in that market) and so the residential products come with great pedigree. At some point we plan a launch at one of the several boutique cinema chains in London using them –just need to work out who also has a Barco projector!”
SoundTube Residential (formerly MSE Audio) will also be featured with a big product launch and its recent re-brand. The product launch is the new DSM16 which is a Dante gateway for the residential market. Offering a multitude of analogue and digital inputs it makes it easy to get signals into a Dante network, perform powerful DSP and control matrix functions. SRND Group we will also be showing the company’s own Fabric Walls, and Light Walls LED elements.
PMC (Stand 59) is launching its new Active twenty5i series to the UK CI market. The four, two-way, models provide an optimised solution for installers’ music-loving customers who are looking for PMC’s studio quality sound, with its ultra-high resolution and clarity, from a fuss-free system that dispenses with the need for external amplification.
Building on the company’s 30+ years of manufacturing high-performance studio monitors with active amplification, the Active twenty5i series brings the same approach to PMC domestic audio systems for the first time. With integrated electronics and matched amplification, the Active twenty5i models enable impressive performance without requiring a separate power or integrated amplifier. All that is required is to add a pre-amp or streaming device to create a complete high-resolution system.
Each drive unit in the Active twenty5.21i, 22i, 23i and 24i models is directly coupled to a dedicated and perfectly matched 100W power amplifier, designed to control the driver with grip and precision. In circuit before the power amplifiers is a custom-designed analogue crossover, which splits the frequency bands of the incoming line-level signal and ensures each amplifier only supplies the signals appropriate for its drive unit.
IP Video Door Stations from DoorBird you will find the right solution for every project. Easy installation due to compact components Easy wiring and start-up High quality products Future-proof through open
PMC will also use the show to deliver the UK debut of its multichannel amplifier, the power 750-8, which has been specifically designed to meet the needs of the custom installation, home cinema and professional immersive audio markets requiring multiple speaker systems.
The PMC power 750-8 is an eightchannel amplifier that combines exceptionally transparent and neutral sound with a massive power output of 750W per channel, says the maker. When bridged and configured as a fourchannel amplifier, the power 750-8 can deliver 1,500W per channel.
Designed to power any passive PMC speaker, this 2U rack-mounted amplifier is particularly well suited for use with PMC’s Ci series of slimline monitors, which are now widely used for surround and ceiling channels in Dolby Atmos home cinema installations and professional studios.
In addition, the power 750-8 also offers fully featured DSP control for each of the eight
channels. Inputs are selectable/switchable as either balanced analogue or Dante. Adjusting EQ for each channel is also easy thanks to
System Engineer software that can be installed on any PC to control and set up any number of amps.
Dizztribution (Stand 46) will be highlighting speaker lines from Beale Street audio, which include the sonic vortex technology to provide a deep, rich bass in their in-ceiling speakers. The company will also be introducing the iEAST range of audio streamers and streamer amplifiers which provide the core for any smarthome installation. A ‘Cinema in the Home’ takes centre stage with Connected Distribution (Stand 3). This approach to cinema design for domestic installations differs to all others in that it centres around Aurea’s ‘proper’ cinema speakers, says the distributor. Aurea, made by LW Speakers in Spain, follow all the design principles of the LW Speakers professional cinema speakers, as installed in cinemas across the world, including Odeon Leicester Square and the BFI Imax. Wide dispersion, intelligibility in the nearfield and higher SPLs are the watchwords in the cinema industry and Aurea domestic speakers adhere to these and are voiced identically to the pro cinema speakers – they’re just a little smaller!
Also on show, from Indy Labs in the US, the Acurus Muse is a compact, class-leading, high resolution immersive audio processor with 16 channels, sufficient for all but the largest installations (a larger 20 channel version is also available). The partnering M8 power amplifier outputs well in excess of 200W per channel across its eight channels, with bridgeable options for additional power. Combine them with the Aurea speakers and the ‘A’ Team is a powerhouse combination says the supplier.
Also on display will be the latest products from other Connected Distribution brands, including Russound’s new D1290 multi-channel amplifier and the AVA mini AVRs. And the first chance to see the new Russound Cinema Bar 3.0 – a passive LCR soundbar designed to be used with the new AVA 3.1 or any AVR.
From Parasound the ever-popular Zonemaster amplifiers; the powerful control system from ProControl; Muxlab’s Unified Communications products; subwoofers from
Earthquake Sound and a selection of products from Yamaha Pro Audio, will also be on show.
Connected will also be introducing a new range of KNX solutions to the UK, bringing style, flexibility and incredible quality to installers working in the BMS sector.
Steinway Lyngdorf (Stand 30) will debut in the UK the impressive Steinway & Sons Soundbar. The Steinway & Sons Marine speakers will also be featured. From Lyngdorf Audio the team will also be debuting the new subwoofer, plus the MXA-8400 power amp will also be in attendance. The firm is also partnering with LED Studios for the show, who will be providing two
screens, so the stand can feature best video and audio combined. Charlie McClarron Sales Director, UK and Simon Schino, Sales and Operations Manager will be at the show, along with Craig Wheeler from LED Studios.
The team will be underlining that they can deliver full systems under one brand, as all the systems are designed to work in harmony and provide everything needed for a highperformance audio experience. The company will also highlight RoomPerfect, the brand’s room calibration software which works very differently from others. Get to the stand and find out more.
GAINING A NEW PERSPECTIVE
Shane Caswell, Business Development Specialist Cables at Webro, offers insight into gaining a new perspective through CEDIA’s smart home technician essential skills course.
As a business-focused professional with over 14 years in the smart home industry, I’ve always been fascinated by the rapid advancements in AV and custom installations. My role at Webro, a leading cable distributor, has allowed me to witness the pivotal role that cables play in the connected world we live in today. But despite my experience, I felt there was a missing piece in my understanding - something that would allow me to truly grasp the technical nuances in our industry. That’s why, last year, I enrolled in CEDIA’s Smart Home Technician Essential Skills Course.
My role at Webro has always been centred around business development, not specifically the technical side. When I first joined the company, I saw the potential in aligning Webro more closely with the AV and custom install sectors. Therefore, we decided to become CEDIA members. Being part of this community has been incredibly beneficial - we attend all the major shows and continuously learn about the latest trends.
However, as much as I’ve enjoyed these opportunities, I wanted to deepen my understanding of the technical aspects of our
industry. I believed that by doing so, I could better appreciate the work our technicians do and contribute more meaningfully to conversations with our clients and partners.
The Smart Home Technician Essential Skills Course was exactly what I needed. Spanning a full week, the course was an ideal mix of classroom learning and hands-on experiences. We delved into the core principles of smart home technology from the technician’s perspective, everything from the basics of wiring to more advanced installation techniques.
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the practical sessions, which provided real-world scenarios where we learnt to wire systems correctly - an essential skill in this industry. I came away with a new-found respect for the detailed work that goes into every installation.
The instructors themselves were a highlight of the course. It was clear that they are experts in their fields with years of experience. They were incredibly generous with their knowledge. No question was too basic or too complex; they welcomed input from all of us, regardless of our backgrounds. This open and inclusive environment was one of the reasons I felt so comfortable throughout the course. I wasn’t the only non-technical participant, there were individuals from various fields, including security and electrical work. We were all able to share our unique perspectives and learn from one another.
The course really expanded my understanding of the smart home industry. I can now see how our products fit into the broader ecosystem and how they contribute to creating seamless and connected experiences. This knowledge has already improved the way I engage in discussions with our technical team and clients. It has also helped me feel more confident in my role.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who is new to the industry, considering a career shift, or simply looking to broaden their understanding. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, this course offers invaluable insights.
The next CEDIA Smart Home Technician Essential Skills Course will be taking place 16 – 20th September at the CEDIA HQ in St. Neots. To find out more, visit https://cedia.org/smart-home-professionals/education/inperson-training/uk-training/smart-home-technician-essential-skills/.

IS IT CONTROL OR CHAOS?
Recent data from D-Tools reveals a 21% decrease in the percentage of proposals that include a whole-house control system. What is going on? asks our resident number wizard Jason Knott, data solutions architect evangelist at D-Tools.
Do you recall watching the 1960s TV show ‘Get Smart’? I hope that television show aired in reruns in the UK like it did in the U.S. Created by Mel Brooks (the same person behind classic comedy movies Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and The Producers) Get Smart centered around bumbling agent named Maxwell Smart, Agent 86. Smart worked for a government spy agency named Control, and every episode he was battling wits against his archenemy Ziegfried, who worked for an evil spy agency dubbed Kaos.
Well, today’s landscape for traditional whole-house control platforms is emulating that Get Smart battle between ‘control versus chaos.’ Indeed, recent data from D-Tools identifies a diminishing trend among integrators to propose and install traditional whole-house
control solutions for their customers. The downward trend is undeniable, but the data suggests that they could be leaving a substantial among of money on the table by reducing their deployment of controls.
For several years integrators anecdotally have told me they opt to offer their customers two distinct choices when it comes to wholehouse controls:
Option #1 – Integrators install a traditional full whole-house control solution that oversees multiple subsystems such as audio, video, lighting, climate, shades and security. This option tends to be more expensive for the customer, and more profitable for the integrator. However, as every integration company knows, the more complex the system, the greater the chance of it requiring post-installation service calls. Smaller
integration firms run lean and mean in terms of labour, so they often do not have the available manpower to handle service.
Option #2 – Integrators do not provide a whole-house control solution but instead install individual subsystems that each have their own control app. This option tends to be less expensive, which often helps close the sale more easily. But what about the lost revenue? Many integrators say that their clients who select Option #2 will often add additional pieces of equipment or upgrade the components in the proposal. For example, they might decide to include several more motorised shades or upgrade the quality of the loudspeakers, both of which are highly profitable categories for integrators. The customers’ mindset for making those improvements is that they are still ‘under budget’ because they rejected the more-expensive whole-house control solution.
According to new data from D-Tools Cloud, which has 2,100 users, the percentage of proposals that include a traditional whole-house control has fallen by 21% in the past two years. That means integrators are not even offering clients Option #1… they are going straight to Option #2. Not surprisingly, integrators’ reticence to even offer a control solution in their proposals has led to a corresponding drop of 22% in the percentage of signed contracts with controls included since 2022.
So, what does that mean for integrators’ revenues? According to D-Tools Cloud data, projects that have a control solution included in them – everything from a whole-house control to a remote control – have an average value 160% greater than installations without a control solution included. That is not a misprint… if the installation includes controls, it boosts the contract from an average of $16,404 to $42,750. Of course, it makes sense that larger projects will be the ones that tend to include a control element, while smaller projects in most cases will not. But the potential increase in revenue for the integration company should be a strong enough incentive to at minimum offer clients that Option #1 versus going straight to Option #2.
Am I wrong?
Note: I look forward to discussing this topic and whatever else is on your mind at the upcoming EI Live! show in Farnborough on 18-19 September 2024.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CYBERSECURITY IN RESIDENTIAL ACCESS SYSTEMS
2N discusses why you should take cyber-attacks seriously – even in home environments.
The demands of homeowners are rising. A residential access system is no longer just about locked doors, it’s about providing residents with the tools they need to feel safe while having control over their living environment. This means that more and more, residential developments require advanced IoT devices that depend on robust internet connectivity for seamless operation.
The fundamental purpose of such devices is clear in the minds of residents and installers alike: to protect from unwanted intrusion and potential theft. But what about protecting them from theft of an entirely different kind?
Cybersecurity is often thought of as a concern solely for large, commercial complexes that store vast quantities of valuable company data. Its importance in the residential environment has an alarming tendency to be downplayed – however, the risk is high.
Today, there is an average of over 20 devices connected to the Internet per family, with an average of eight attacks per day on home networks. Such attacks are not limited to mobile phones and computers - access control and other residential technology such
as home automation can be targeted too. Some examples of documented cyber-attacks on this technology include:
• An attacker in Finland used a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack to hack into the heating system control unit of two residential buildings, leaving residents without heat for three days in the middle of winter.
• A building automation engineering firm in Germany experienced a cyberattack that locked the firm out of the system and rendered several hundred devices in the building nonoperational, affecting the lighting, motion detectors and window shutter controllers.
• Using a publicly available application and a default username and password, hackers gained access to hundreds of IP cameras and other audio-video devices such as baby monitors within apartments worldwide, allowing them to spy and listen in on residents.
• Even more alarming, an attacker exploited a backdoor in an access control device, allowing them to create a new user with full credentials, and move freely around the property.
PROTECTION THROUGHOUT THE PRODUCT LIFECYCLE
It’s clear from these examples that cybersecurity shouldn’t be an afterthought. A good quality residential access control system is manufactured by a company actively involved in cyber security - both in terms of information security management (the ISO 27001 certification) and product development.
Devices and software should be made with cybersecurity in mind from the start: from initial concept to extensive testing at the R&D stage, and finally in product production. Evidence of this in action is something called a Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC). The official ‘name’ of SSDLCs can vary company by company (2N uses one called the Axis Security Development Model) but the purpose is the same: to make software security an integrated part of development, reduce security-related business risks, and increase customers’ and partners’ awareness of security considerations. An SSDLC can also create the potential for cost reduction thanks to early detection and resolution of issues.
QUALITY DEVELOPMENT = RIGOROUS TESTING
Thorough testing is the cornerstone of a development process that prioritises cybersecurity from the outset. If a device has an integrated operating system, each update should be thoroughly tested before launch to ensure maximum protection, as vulnerabilities can often arise. Each new version of the 2N OS (and other 2N software platforms) undergoes more than 2,000 automated tests before its official release. We also conduct continuous threat modelling to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities (ensuring a more secure architecture from the ground up) and carry out in-depth and continuous real-world testing of devices before launch.
PROTECT PERSONAL DATA
Of course, intercoms and other devices in apartment systems record video and audio. How can you ensure they carry out this vital function without compromising personal data? Ensure GDPR compliance. 2N designs products to prioritise privacy. With intercoms, video recording is only activated when needed, and no surveillance occurs without user instruction. Personal data is encrypted and not shared for any purpose. The indoor stations you install inside apartments have inactive microphones in standby mode, and conversations are not stored. Access control readers that secure common areas or lifts do not ‘scan’ mobile devices to use data for marketing. Lastly, our cloud and software services also encrypt personal data and store it securely, with continuous enhancements to data protection.
BUILD YOUR SYSTEM USING DEVICES WITH QUALITY COMPONENTS
As you’ve seen, 2N make cybersecurity a priority in many aspects of our manufacturing, and this includes the physical components we use. Our products, their chipsets, or other components capable of processing software are all NDAAcompliant. An example of this is the 2N IP Verso 2.0 video intercom, a great choice for apartment complexes thanks to its modular design. It can support up to five access technologies, has a Full
HD camera, and is powered by the ARTPEC-7 processor – a trusted chipset produced by our parent company, Axis.
A SHARED AND ONGOING RESPONSIBILITY
Finally, remember that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility that extends beyond only the product’s manufacturer and their due diligence. It encompasses the efforts of distributors, installers, and end customers alike; and only by working together can we strengthen our defences against cyber threats.
o Manufacturers play a crucial role in developing secure products and providing regular updates that include security patches as well as new features.
o Distributors must ensure the integrity of the supply chain and deliver products free from tampering or compromise.
o Installers bear the responsibility of configuring, deploying and maintaining systems securely, adhering to customer requirements, ensuring regular updates and following best practices.
o End customers must actively engage in securing their systems. They should always be wary of unsolicited communication that asks for sensitive information and contact a certified installer for configuration changes.
o Anyone who finds a vulnerability should report it immediately – and the company they use should make this process easy & clear.
When building an access control system, we recommend thinking about more than the physical durability and modern features of the intercoms, access readers, and indoor units you install. Whilst those traits are vital for a secure apartment intercom system, cybersecurity is of utmost, if not equal, importance.

KNX SECURE –CYBER SECURITY ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS AND PROTOCOLS
Reflection and advice from Iain Gordon, GES Digital & KNX UK Chair, on how to keep networks safe and secure.
Iain is a qualified electrician, technician and KNX partner with over 38 years of experience. He has been actively involved in the promotion of KNX technologies in the UK since 2007 and is the current Chair of KNX UK. Throughout his years working with and representing KNX at a national and international level, Iain has presented countless talks on many associated subjects and moderated panels in the Smart technology sector.
The ever-increasing demand for automation and connectivity has increased opportunities for both casual and organised cyber criminals. From causing annoyance just for kicks or wreaking havoc to infrastructure as we have seen again just recently, Cyber Crime is a serious issue.
In our push for net zero, intelligent building systems are no longer a luxury, whether in domestic, commercial or industrial settings. It was therefore only a matter of time before cyber criminals would target vulnerabilities in these systems.
KNX has been safeguarding against this predicted trend for some years and I have, personally, been fortunate to be able to stay ahead of the curve because of this. My association with KNX UK - a community of companies with a shared interest, has enabled
me to focus on secure installations in order to safeguard my clients’ properties and my own business interests.
Business owners who are concerned about their clients’ safety as well as the potential damage to their professional standing, need to be vigilant about security and in particular need to check if they are able to offer this to their clients. Specifically, checking that you are able to provide the following will be helpful:
• Secure technology - EN 50090-3-4
• Blocks against hacker attacks on the digital infrastructure of networked buildings
• Technology that meets the highest encryption standards (according to ISO 18033-3, such as AES 128 CCM encryption)
• Achieves the highest level of data protection
• Extends the IP protocol – so all transferred telegrams and data are completely encrypted.
From a practical viewpoint, knowing how to secure some key areas may be useful in protecting client interests and the reputation of your business. This is by no means an exhaustive guide, but it may be helpful in highlighting potential threats and offer ways to guard against them.
PREVENTING ACCESS TO THE NETWORK
A proper security concept is based on ensuring proper prevention against unauthorised access. This implies that only authorised persons (the installer, caretaker, user) shall have physical access to the installation. Whether the system uses a single protocol or multiple protocols, using the worldwide KNX standard enables smooth interoperability between different devices and protocols that can ensure the whole system is brought within secure parameters, safeguarding your clients and of course your business too.
INSTALLATION OF CABLE AND DEVICES
Applications and devices need to be securely fixed to avoid removal by unauthorised persons. Enclosures and distribution boards must be properly closed or mounted in rooms retained as authorised access only.
External devices could be mounted at height (e. g. weather station, wind sensor, movement/ presence detector) Consideration could be given to make use of conventional devices in connection with binary inputs mounted
in protected areas (e. g. in distribution boards) or push-button interfaces, preventing access to the bus.
When available, anti-theft measures provided by certain Application Modules should be used (e. g. securing devices by screws, only removable with specialist tools, high pull-off resistance).
CABLING
Cable ends should not be visible, hanging outside the wall on the outside or inside of the building.
Bus cable in outside areas poses a higher risk. Physical access to KNX Twisted Pair cable shall in this case be made even more difficult than in the home / building itself.
For extra protection, devices installed in areas with limited surveillance (outside, underground parking lot, toilet, etc.) can be connected to an extra and physically isolated line.
POWERLINE
Electronic filters could be used to filter incoming and out-going signals.
INTERNET CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE BUILDING
It is not advisable to open ports of routers towards an unencrypted internet connection and the (W) LAN installation should be protected by a firewall.
In cases where no external access to the installation is necessary, the default gateway can be set to 0, securing the installation from external communication entirely. If external access is needed, consideration of VPN connections can be helpful.
Many KNX certified products now have inbuilt additional security measures, so it is always worth checking these when choosing the products for your installations.
RF & IP
As an entirely open medium, securing RF devices is reliant on encrypted passwords – never allow your clients to use the default passwords or SSID on any devices that communicate over RF, IP or
IoT. This and other considerations for connected devices are now a subject of the new PSTI regulations in the UK and the soon to be rolled out RED regulations in the EU. There are specialists who can provide guidance on how to comply with these regulations, but the bottom line is to be aware that responsibility now lies with every stage of the supply chain. If you are supplying goods to an end-user this includes your business too.
If you are not an IT network specialist, consulting one to ensure that all security measures have been met will protect your client and your business. Given the public perception of cyber-crime it would be quite reasonable to draw potential clients’ attention to the steps and additional expense incurred to ensure that their system is safe.
DETECTING UNAUTHORISED BUS ACCESS
KNX Secure devices keep track of hacks in security failure logs in this way, it is at any time possible to check whether the installation was subject to security attacks.
Some device types can detect if another device sends Telegrams with their Individual Address. This is not spontaneously announced in the network, but it can be read in the PID_DEVICE_CONTROL and/ or PID_DOWNLOAD_COUNTER. Comparing the read out value (periodically) with a reference value will signal changes in the device configuration.
FUTUREPROOFING

INTEGRATING GATE AUTOMATION WITH SMART HOME SYSTEMS
The convergence of gate automation and smart home technology has ushered in a new era of residential security and convenience, says Chris Edwards, Marketing Director of CIE-Group.
By seamlessly integrating these systems, smart home installers can deliver enhanced control, efficiency and peace of mind.
One of the key challenges for smart home installers is to ensure that gate automation and access control systems are compatible with the existing or planned smart home infrastructure. This requires careful planning and selection of the right products and protocols that can communicate with each other seamlessly.
For property owners, gate automation significantly enhances both safety and convenience. With features such as video verification and remote monitoring through integration with the new generation of IP intercoms and access control systems, users can exercise a high degree of control and deter unauthorised entry and ensure peace of mind. Beyond security, gate automation can help streamline daily routines through automated opening and closing based on user presence or schedules.
Moreover, remote access capabilities – such as smartphone integration – allows users to manage gate access from anywhere in the world, to grant access to visitors or service providers instantly. Also, by integrating with smart home energy management systems, gate automation can also help contribute to energy efficiency efforts by limiting gate operation to daylight hours. Ultimately, as many smart home owners have realised, the combination of security,
convenience, and potential energy savings can significantly increase a property’s value.
EVOLUTION
The evolution of gate automation has been closely linked to advances in communication technology – closely following the same technology trends as those in smartphone advances. Access credential technology has developed to not only use conventional keypad/Pin, but now frequently offers access authentication via face recognition, smartphone NFC and QR code, for example. In addition, LTE, (‘Long-Term Evolution’) wireless broadband connectivity allows IP intercoms and access readers to be connected to the network without the need to run data cables from the house to the gateway.
With the advent of IP intercom technology, remote access control is now possible. This is largely due to the introduction of LTE connectivity which has revolutionised the industry, enabling reliable and widespread remote control of gate systems.
Today, gate automation systems are increasingly integrated with smart home platforms, leveraging APIs to establish seamless communication between different devices and systems. This integration allows homeowners to manage gate access through user-friendly interfaces, such as smartphone apps, tablets or voice assistant technology.
CONNECTIVITY
IP intercoms have been instrumental in the development of advanced gate automation systems. By replacing traditional analogue devices, IP intercoms offer superior audio and video quality, as well as enhanced features like remote access and integration with other smart devices. LTE connectivity has further expanded the capabilities of gate automation systems. By providing reliable wireless communication, LTE enables remote control, real-time monitoring, and remote troubleshooting.
PARTNERSHIP
A smart home installer and a gate automation specialist can form a powerful partnership to create highly integrated gate and home automation systems. The smart home installer typically focuses on the internal aspects including audio-visual equipment, lighting, and security systems, while the gate automation specialist will handle the external aspect of the project, primarily the automation of gates, garage doors = and other outdoor elements of the installation. Both professionals will often work together with the homeowner to understand their needs and desires for the system and iron out any potential conflicts in terms of wiring, control interfaces, and network connectivity.
THE FUTURE
The future of gate automation and smart home integration is poised for significant advances. Key trends include face recognition systems which use biometric authentication for convenient and secure access, which are beginning to take a foothold in the UK market. We are seeing this through Akuvox, one of our key access control brands. Also, AI-powered systems are on the horizon. By staying informed about these emerging trends, smart home installers can leverage the latest technologies to create even more secure, convenient, and efficient gate automation solutions for their clients and customers.

THE ROLE OF AI IN SECURITY FOR THE SMART HOME
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is transforming home security and surveillance, argues Snap One.
This technology revolution is creating a proactive and intelligent environment, increasing the effectiveness of home security and surveillance systems and making them more accessible and user-friendly for homeowners. AI is also increasing the capabilities of home automation services that integrators can provide and generating new business opportunities across a broad range of devices.
One of the most significant changes brought about by AI is the ability to recognise patterns and make predictions. AI-powered cameras can now differentiate between ordinary and suspicious activity, alerting homeowners in realtime to potential threats. They can identify and make distinctions between multiple different scenarios and potential threats, minimising false alarms and ensuring timely responses to genuine threats. For example, Luma IP cameras from Snap One include a feature called Smart AI events to monitor and create alerts for the detection of people, intrusion, line-crossing, loitering and people gathering. AI-powered cameras can also provide useful AI analytics with human, vehicle and non-motor vehicle detection and notifications.
When used in conjunction with a control system, a series of automated events can be
triggered, for example, when a car enters the driveway it can activate the pathway lights to turn on. This integration with other smart home sub-systems allows for a more cohesive and comprehensive solution, with AI serving as a core intelligence that coordinates various elements, such as, lighting, locks and sensors.
AI is also making home security systems smarter through machine learning algorithms that continuously learn and adapt from the data they collect. This means surveillance and security systems can optimise their performance over time, adjusting to the specific needs and patterns of a homeowner’s lifestyle.
At Snap One we have fully embraced AI and its potential to deliver powerful new security and surveillance benefits for our Partners and their customers. This year, we introduced Luma Insights, a new AI-based surveillance solution for Control4 customers that leverages artificial intelligence to enhance Luma Cameras as well as the Control4 Chime inside a customer’s Control4 System.
Insights is easy to install using OvrC to configure and deploy directly into a Control4 OS 3.4+ system in about three or four steps, with no additional programming. Luma Insights is the perfect solution for professional installers
who want to offer their customers a cuttingedge security solution for new or existing systems. Any event-triggered snapshots and video clips are cloud-based and can be easily played back through the Control4 Touchscreens and Apps.
We also launched Luma Bridge, a hardware device that utilises the Hailo-8 AI processor to enable Luma Insights. The Luma Bridge device comes bundled with a three-year subscription to the Luma Insights service, which allows Snap One Partners to integrate powerful new AI and machine learning features that far exceed the capabilities of their IP cameras and NVRs alone. The Insights service is compatible at launch with Luma x10 and x20 IP cameras as well as the Control4 Chime Video Doorbell, and is integrator-friendly, requiring very minimal setup.
At Snap One, our focus is on enhancing the Control4 experience by delivering features including surveillance-based playback, automatic and dynamic notifications all inside of Control4 using the AI of Luma Insights. Our longer-term goal is to continue making it easy for Partners to update existing systems without needing to engage in costly and intrusive system overhauls.
QUICK SILVER
Joel Silver,
CEO & Lead
Developer of the Imaging Science Foundation, Inc speaks exclusively to EI about his story and journey to improve imaging across the AV sector.
Tell us a little about your early life and first work experiences and how they informed your later work.
Well before we launched the ISF I was teaching at an MBA program on Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital at local university – the two basic principles of success we studied were inventing something entirely new – or finding something in the market broken and fix it.
Later on I was part of the launch of a home theatre magazine - and our research found delivery services for TVs missing in action –basically totally broken – there were no services available to properly set up TVs and projectors –we also had a high end audio magazine and we knew there were expert services for professional audio system tuning available around the globe – we saw an opportunity to do the same for the birth of high end video installations.
What are some of your earliest memories of becoming aware of image quality as a phenomenon?
Looking back our experiences at CES and other trade shows were comical – multiple manufacturers were showing TVs with widely different pictures showing the same content –when I brought out a precision colour analyser at press conferences and asked if we could measure their TVs, we were told they ‘did not do that’ - and we were quickly shown the door at multiple booths.
When and why did you first get the idea to found the ISF?
A dear friend with a retail store had invested a fortune in a high-end projection home theatre –he had zero sales – I visited and found the image quality was a disaster and totally unsellable – we calibrated the system and it was vastly improved to everybody’s eyes at the store – sales took off and my friend asked me if we could teach his staff how to calibrate…….with 7,000 people now trained we have a good start.
How easy/difficult was it to get it off the ground?
We were not at all welcomed at shows when we suggested changing the settings on consumer TVs – even after demonstrations showed improvements were easy to obtain, many people were hostile to the implementation of International Display Standards – we were told they had their ‘way’ of setting their TVs and we should leave them alone.
It was years after starting training installers that we found there were some brilliant, talented engineers working at multiple manufacturers that were trying to set their TVs to achieve compliance to the same standards we were teaching people to calibrate to – finding and meeting them gave the ISF a chance – one manufacturer agreed to add an ‘ISF Mode’ to their high end plasma models - and gave us our first big break!
What are some of the major milestones/achievements you are most proud of with the ISF?
That’s easy:
1. Creating awareness that there are international standards for setting up TVs to accurately deliver the intent of the creative artists in homes.
2. Working with the majority of manufacturers to add calibration controls to TV menus to make calibration possible – almost every TV now has at least the basic controls needed for calibration – something we are very proud to have been a part of!
Like many in the sector, Joel is car nut!
3. Receiving the CEDIA Lifetime Achievement award - https://imagingscience.com/ and scroll down to the video from CEDIA.
Tell us about what the ISF is doing right at this point in time, what are you delivering and hoping to achieve?
We are continuing to train calibrators and work with new manufacturers to insure that their TVs will calibrate well.
We have instructors that are running ISF sessions in multiple languages – we just ran two sessions in French in Paris and a German language session in Munich – our instructors now teach more sessions than I do!
Why does the world need video calibration and why has it lagged a little behind its audio cousin?
TVs need calibration now more than ever before – default energy saving settings now choke the life out of dynamic range – and out of the box modes have always been designed to sell TVs under retail lighting conditions - so those default modes are far from the best modes for home use. High end audio retailer stores have almost always been run by dedicated enthusiasts and hobbyists who share their passion with their clients – TV retailers have been traditionally big box discounters.
CEDIA did change that equation - and many CEDIA integrators are more like high end audio people who are dedicated to excellence – I am a long term CEDIA Awards judge and have seen
first hand volumes of superb installations that make me proud to be part of this industry!
New CEDIA standards for video calibration are coming, similar to RP22; Tell us about this and what your involvement has been?
I have been proud to have been the Chair of the RP23 committee for many years – its members are of some of the most brilliant, talented and dedicated volunteers in the industry – my cochair, Jason Dustal, just ran the ISF session at Sony UK and he and I always talk about what we learn from our committee members – all of us are SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) in different disciplines - and all bring unique perspectives to defining and establishing performance parameters for excellence in Immersive Video System Design – like RP22, this will be a landmark document!
What is the most important aspect of calibrating an image?
Dynamic range…….and with HDR it is now doubly important!
Do you have any top tips to get people started?
Be a voracious reader of TV reviews written by ISF certified AV writers – there is a lot of talent publishing credible reviews with calibration data backing up their conclusions – avoid those writers who have ‘opinions’ instead of those who take measurements.
Tell us about volunteering as the chair of the CEA and CEDIA committee on Home Theater Video recommended practices.
It is both challenging work and quite time consuming - and I find it totally educational and rewarding – the ISF is basically a standards compliance organisation – defining excellence has been a life’s work for me – when teaching at MBA programs we asked MBA candidates to aspire to read tomorrow’s headlines – when developing standards, the committees are writing tomorrow’s headlines!
What are some really great looking titles that you have seen recently?
By no surprise Dune 2 – but I found both the picture and sound on Gran Turismo to be a blast – and since I am a serious car nut this is now a favourite demo for my motoring friends!
What do people need to do if they want to learn more or get in touch with the ISF?
Check out our website – and feel free to reach out to me via joel@imagingscience.com.
We also have an 11 module online Level 1 certification with comprehensive content and step by step calibration instruction – it is ideal for those who find it hard to travel to attend one our three day sessions.
Away from work, what are your interests or hobbies?
Well, fortunately for me work is a hobby – as is long distance cycling, photography, travel and learning about wine!
THE SILENT HEROES OF AV: THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD AV CABLES
Joe Carri, Director at Prestige Audio and regular EI contributor encourages installers to give cables the respect they deserve.
In the world of audio-visual technology, much of the spotlight often falls on the glamorous elements—the cutting-edge screens, the highfidelity speakers and the sophisticated software that ties everything together. However, lurking behind this innovation lies an unsung hero: the AV cables. While they might seem like a mere accessory, good quality AV cables are fundamental to the success of any AV setup. Here’s why, from a technical standpoint, they deserve more respect and attention than they typically receive.
SIGNAL INTEGRITY AND QUALITY
At the heart of any AV system is the quality of the signal being transmitted. AV cables are the conduits through which these signals travel. Poor quality cables can introduce a range of issues, including signal degradation, interference and
noise. High-quality cables are designed with materials and shielding that protect the signal from external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI), ensuring that the audio and video signals remain clear and crisp from source to output.
BANDWIDTH AND RESOLUTION SUPPORT
As AV technology advances, the demand for higher resolutions and greater bandwidth continues to increase. Modern displays and audio systems now support 4K, 8K, and beyond, along with high-fidelity audio formats. High-quality AV cables are capable of supporting these advanced specifications by providing the necessary bandwidth. For instance, an HDMI 2.1 cable can handle up to 48 Gbps of data, ensuring support for features like 8K video at 60Hz or 4K video at 120Hz. Using cheaper lower specified cables
can bottleneck these capabilities, leading to a compromised AV experience.
DURABILITY AND RELIABILITY
In professional AV environments, reliability is paramount. AV setups in concert halls, conference rooms and broadcast studios often require cables that can withstand constant use and physical stress. High-quality AV cables are built to be more durable, with robust connectors and sturdy insulation that can endure frequent plugging and unplugging, coiling, and even some degree of environmental exposure. This durability reduces the risk of failures that could interrupt performances or presentations, ensuring that the show always goes on without a hitch. Where possible our recommendation is to solder connections rather than connectors – we learnt this the hard way from our automative days.

FUTURE-PROOFING
Investing in high-quality AV cables is also a matter of future-proofing. As technology continues to evolve, having cables that can support new standards and higher specifications means that your AV setups will remain compatible with the latest devices and formats. This long-term perspective not only protects your investment but also ensures that you can seamlessly integrate new technology without having to overhaul your entire cabling infrastructure.
INSTALLATION
In professional AV installations, aesthetics matter. High-quality cables often come with better designs, including sleeker connectors and more flexible, manageable cabling. This not only helps in maintaining a clean and organised setup but also makes it easier to manage and troubleshoot the cabling infrastructure. Invest in a good cable labeller and label all the cables. This might sound like something we all do however, most of us have been to a site in the past where the cabling is very untidy and not labelled. A tidy, professional-looking installation reflects well on the quality of the work and can even enhance the overall user experience.
CONCLUSION
While it might be tempting to cut corners with cheaper AV cables, the technical drawbacks of doing so far outweigh the initial cost savings. Good AV cables are not just a conduit for signals; they are the backbone of a reliable, highquality AV system. From ensuring signal integrity and supporting advanced resolutions to providing durability and minimising latency, the benefits of investing in high-quality AV cables are clear. For any AV professional aiming to deliver the best possible experience, understanding and prioritising the quality of your cables is not just advisable—it’s essential.
THE UNSUNG HEROES
James Chen, Managing Director at Kordz, champions the humble cable and their importance in performance.
Cables and connections are quite simply the unsung heroes of every smart home and luxury AV setup. Although typically hidden from view, their role is fundamental to the flawless operation of almost every technology. From delivering high-definition video, engaging audio and seamless control to maintaining a stable and robust home network, the quality of your cables and connections directly influences performance and reliability.
In today’s increasingly connected world, where the demand for exceptional experiences continues to grow, the importance of specifying the right cables and ensuring they are properly installed has never been greater. Every detail matters: from the type of cable to its construction, the way it’s terminated and even its length, as these factors can have a significant impact on signal integrity and overall system efficacy. Understanding these often-overlooked and misunderstood details are key to achieving the reliable performance expected in an elite AV environment, taking your projects from good to great.
THE EVOLUTION OF CABLES AND CONNECTIONS
The journey of cables and connections has been one of steady evolution, transforming over the years from basic analogue wiring systems into sophisticated, high-performance digital connectivity solutions that power today’s smart homes and luxury AV systems. In the early days, cables were simple conductors, primarily focused on carrying analogue electrical signals. As technology advanced, so did the demands placed on cable infrastructure with a profound shift from analogue to digital communications.
One of the most significant digital advancements has been in high-speed data transfer. Modern cables, such as HDMI and Ethernet, now support eye-wateringly fast data rates, enabling ultra-high-definition video, immersive audio and ultra-fast internet connectivity. Precision cable construction has been one part of the story, the other has been the advancement of connector technology.
These advancements have had a profound impact on the smart home and AV markets,
allowing for more integrated, high-performance systems that meet the growing expectations of today’s tech-savvy consumers. The result is a more immersive, reliable and visually appealing AV experience, where every connection counts in the system’s performance.
THE HIDDEN COMPONENT MAKING UP MOST OF THE SIGNAL PATHWAY
Ideally, cables and connections should remain hidden from view, quietly performing their crucial tasks behind the scenes—except in highend Hi-Fi systems where cables are often part of the aesthetic. Most clients are more concerned with the functionality and seamless operation of their systems than the inner workings, much like central heating, where the goal is warmth without visible pipework.
In modern AV setups, Cat cables are the essential data lifeline, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted operation. Even modest installations can require hundreds of metres of Cat cable. While primarily used for IP

WHY ISOLATING THE LAN WILL IMPROVE AUDIO PERFORMANCE, AND HOW TO DO IT
AV veteran Alan Ainslie, Managing Director of ADMM, explains.
Incorporating audio systems into established LANs can impact performance and the musical experience. This is because computer networks are designed for shifting large amounts of data around as quickly as possible. Audio files, by comparison, are not very large, so the speed and bandwidth a 1GB LAN offers, albeit it good for streaming video and huge files, is unnecessary for high-quality audio.
Cables attract noise as they are large antennas, such as RF interference from airbound signals etc., and with wired LANs, this presents a problem, especially for audio, as this interference affects data integrity – the Ethernet Eye Pattern is compromised making data recovery more of a burden. Yes, wireless connectivity could be used, but we all know the issues that can create, such as signal instability, especially when there are lots of devices on the same network. This is why most audiophile brands always recommend that a wired LAN is used.
Electrically noisy network connections will also affect analogue sources, as the system is being injected with noise from the external LAN. Even when suppression devices are used, these cause trouble by dumping the interference to Ground, and Ground is the reference for all unbalanced audio systems; so
unlikely as it seems, disconnecting an Ethernet cable can easily improve Phono replay!
To get the best performance for networked audio, the ideal solution is to electrically isolate the audio products from the wired LAN. Sounds simple but why do this? Digital signals are just as susceptible to noise and interference as analogue signals, and with the amount of wireless devices used throughout the average home, along with other forms of interference, it is likely that however well screened a cable is RF is picked up and conducted within the LAN, which damages the integrity of the pulse edges, resulting in timing errors and jitter.
So what is the solution? By converting the data signal from electrical into optical fibre, which is electrically insulated and nonconducting, the conducted interference is isolated, removing the interference and isolating the audio system, leaving just the uncluttered data in its purest form.
To convert from copper Ethernet to Optical Fibre, ADOT use a ‘media converter’. This not only performs the copper to fibre conversion, but also rebuilds the damaged and untidy Ethernet data resulting in a clear ‘eye pattern’ for improved sound, even from streaming sources external to the house such as TIDAL or Qobuz. Additionally, within the data rebuild, there is the
option to throttle the data rate from the common 1000Mb/s necessary for video etc, to a more audio friendly 100Mb/s – this is selected by a couple of switches on the media converter.
In its basic MC02 Dual configuration, such as for a system utilising a single LAN socket, two ADOT Media Convertors are connected together by the supplied fibre cable and matching SFP adaptors, with one box fed from the LAN via RJ-45 and the other offering a direct connection into the system, also via RJ-45. This is the perfect introduction to LAN noise isolation for streaming-based systems, such as Naim, Linn, Auralic etc., where a single RJ-45 socket is located on the main device. The MC02 Dual should also be utilised where the main LAN connection is connected to a dedicated RJ-45 Network Switch for the audio system, with multiple products receiving the same isolated data supply. Alternatively, were there to be a dedicated audio Switch in the system that has an SFP input, the ADOT MC01, which is a single Media Converter, can be used, connecting the fibre output directly to the Switch via the SFP termination.
ADOT should be the last connection directly into the audio system. For example, were a streamer to be used, then the output of the ADOT (either RJ-45 or SFP) connects directly to the streamer’s LAN connection. Where a data switch is used, such as the Melco S100, then the output of the ADOT should connect directly to the switch, with the streamer and/ or other audio LAN devices connecting to the same data switch.
So will you and your customer hear a difference? This is a classic question for any audio product and with the same answer – try it for yourself! We do add that there are many customers who use ADOT kits in their systems who are extremely happy with the outcome, especially those who use powerline-type ‘wired’ LANs.
We would certainly recommend trying ADOT in any audio installation that is connected to a wired LAN. For every installer, the goal is to deliver the very best performance for the customer, and if the LAN is anything less than perfect, the system will reproduce what it is given. Why would you put up with an inferior LAN when it could be isolated and deliver a better performance?
EVOLUTION POWERS REVOLUTION
Alan Chow, Managing Director of Chowmain, software developers for home automation system apps, drivers, modules and plugins, offers an installer’s perspective on the evolution of programming and commissioning home automation systems.
The home automation industry has undergone a profound transformation over the past 20 years. For installers, the journey from basic, standalone systems to today’s complex, interconnected smart homes has been nothing short of revolutionary. The tools, technologies, and approaches used in programming and commissioning these systems have evolved significantly, altering the landscape of the industry and the role of the installer.
THE STATE OF HOME AUTOMATION 20 YEARS AGO
Twenty years ago, home automation was in its infancy. The systems available were relatively simple and at times isolated in functionality. Home owners often only dealt with individual subsystems—such as lighting control specialist, security system installer, and the home theatre expert —those of which operated independently of one another. The term ‘smart home’ was not as widely recognised, and automation was considered a luxury, primarily reserved for high-end homes.
1. Limited Integration: Back then, integration between different systems was limited or non existent. Installers had to rely on hardwired connections and basic control protocols to achieve any level of integration.
2. Manual Programming: Programming was a manual and time-consuming process. Installers often had to write custom macros for each function. The programming environments were rudimentary and the user interfaces were not intuitive.
3. Commissioning Challenges: Commissioning a system 20 years ago was a labour-intensive process. Installers had to spend a considerable amount of time on-site. Troubleshooting was a challenge due to technologies such as infrared and serial being common, and identifying issues often required trial and error. Moreover, the lack of remote access meant that any post-installation support required a return visit to the site.
4. User Experience: From the end-user’s perspective, operating a home automation system was not always straightforward. The systems were often complex and required significant user training. The hardware and interfaces were clunky, slow and proprietary.
THE STATE OF HOME AUTOMATION TODAY
Fast forward to today, and the home automation industry has matured dramatically. The modern smart home is defined by its seamless integration, ease of use and
extensive customisation options. The evolution of technology has significantly impacted how installers approach programming and commissioning these systems, making their work more efficient and allowing them to deliver more sophisticated solutions to clients.
1. Seamless Integration: One of the most significant changes over the past 20 years is the move towards seamless integration of various subsystems. Today’s home automation platforms allow installers to integrate lighting, security, HVAC, audio-visual and other products into a unified control interface with ease due to specialised drivers developed by companies such as Chowmainsoft. Ethernet and Wi-Fi networks in homes have become increasingly complex, and video distribution is more intricate than ever.
Installers now work with standardized communication protocols, such as IP, KNX, Dali, DMX, Zigbee, and Z-Wave, which enable different devices and systems to communicate effortlessly. The use of these protocols has changed the way homes are wired and made it easier to retrofit new devices to the system. Moreover, the advent of voice control through assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri has added a new layer of convenience, allowing users to control their smart home with simple voice commands.

2. Advanced Programming Tools: The tools available for programming home automation systems have also evolved. Modern programming environments are more intuitive, often featuring drag-and-drop interfaces and pre-built templates that simplify the programming process. On top of this, drivers make integration of products fast and easy. This has reduced the time required for installation and allowed installers to focus on customising the system to meet the specific needs of the client.
Furthermore, cloud-based programming has become a standard feature in many home automation platforms. This allows installers to program and update systems remotely, providing greater flexibility and reducing the need for on-site visits. The ability to perform remote diagnostics and troubleshooting is a game-changer, enabling faster resolution of issues and minimising downtime for the user.
Drivers also significantly speed up the programming of systems by providing preconfigured, standardised communication protocols that facilitate seamless integration between devices and platforms. These drivers eliminate the need for custom coding, allowing installers to quickly configure and deploy devices within a smart home environment. By leveraging professionally developed drivers, like those from Chowmainsoft, installers can streamline the setup process, reduce programming time, and ensure compatibility across various systems, resulting in faster, more e cient commissioning and a smoother overall installation experience. This e ciency enables installers to focus more on customisation and optimisation, enhancing the value delivered to clients.
3. Streamlined Commissioning: The commissioning process has become more streamlined thanks to advancements in technology. Installers now have access to sophisticated diagnostic tools that can automatically detect and troubleshoot issues during the commissioning phase. This has reduced the amount of time spent on-site and improved the overall reliability of the systems.
Commissioning tools also allow for better documentation and reporting. Installers can generate detailed reports on the system’s configuration and performance, which can be provided to the client for future reference. This level of documentation was often lacking in the past, leading to challenges in maintaining and upgrading systems over time.
4. Enhanced User Experience: Today’s home automation systems are designed with the enduser in mind. The interfaces are more intuitive, often featuring customisable touchscreens, iOS/Android apps, and voice control options. Users can easily manage their entire home from a single interface, whether they are at home or away. The focus on user experience has led to higher adoption rates and greater satisfaction among homeowners.
THE ROLE OF THE INSTALLER TODAY
The evolution of home automation technology has also transformed the role of the installer. While technical expertise is still essential, today’s installers must also be proficient in network configuration and software integration. The ability to provide ongoing support and remote management has become a key di erentiator in the industry.
1. Networking Expertise: With the shift towards IP-based communication, installers must have a deep understanding of networking principles. Configuring routers, setting up secure Wi-Fi networks, and ensuring that devices can communicate reliably over the network are now critical aspects of the job. This has elevated the skill set required for installers, blending traditional electrical skills with modern IT knowledge.
2. Software Integration: The complexity of today’s systems requires installers to be adept at software integration. This includes not only programming the automation platform but also integrating third-party devices and services. Installers must ensure that all components work together harmoniously and that the system is optimised for performance.
CONCLUSION
The state of programming and commissioning home automation systems has evolved dramatically over the past 20 years. What was once a niche luxury market has grown into a mainstream industry with a wide range of solutions for every type of home. For installers, this evolution has brought both challenges and opportunities. The availability of professionally developed drivers, such as those available from Chowmainsoft.com marketplace, has been instrumental in streamlining and accelerating the programming and commissioning process. As technology continues to advance, the trend towards greater integration, ease of use, and remote management will likely continue. Installers who leverage these developments and use professional drivers will be wellpositioned to thrive in the ever-expanding world of home automation, delivering sophisticated and reliable smart home solutions that meet the needs of today’s homeowners.
ALLSEE OVERVIEW
Dr. Baoli Zhao is the founder and Managing Director of Allsee Technologies Ltd and Vieunite Ltd. Here, he speaks to EI about his life and the B2B potential of the recently launched Vieunite Pro concept. Come back next month for Part 2!
Tell us a little about your early life and work experience.
I was born and raised in rural China, on a farm in a village near Beijing. I began studying for my PhD in Artificial Intelligence in the UK in 2002, with my research topic being Speech Recognition. After graduating, there wasn’t much of a market for the practical application of this subject, unlike today where AI is booming. I then joined a research oriented private company in Glasgow in 2006. During this time I remember seeing the infamous bouncing balls advert which was used to launch Sony’s LCD TV brand, Bravia –which had a profound impact on me. I quickly came to the realisation that LCD technology was in mass production and although priced very highly at the time, my computer science background gave me the insight to understand that this technology would become more affordable within the coming years. When pondering how this technology could be applied for commercial success it was apparent that the domestic TV market was already very competitive with very large brands dominating. I wanted to develop a product for small businesses to advertise and promote their products and services. At the time the primary marketing methods for businesses were still relatively traditional – such as local radio advertising, magazine advert, trade shows – as social media was still in its infancy and Google had not become the giant it is today. I believed that by creating a new digital medium that was accessible for SMEs I could make
this a commercial success. With this concept I founded Allsee Technologies in 2007, initially manufacturing four 32in advertising displays.
What was the motivation behind founding Allsee Technologies?
The main objective behind the formation of Allsee was to advance commercial displays by democratising digital signage. At the time, and in many cases even to this day, digital signage solutions comprised of three separate elements from three different suppliers. These are: the display itself, a PC or media player and a content management system. The two biggest issues with this type of system for most SMEs were that they were complicated, requiring technical resources, and expensive, requiring a large budget. This meant that the majority of businesses couldn’t realise the benefits of this
technology. I wanted to created an integrated system that was easy to use and wouldn’t break the bank. To do this, I adopted a similar technology to that used in digital photo frames, which were very popular at the time. I helped to develop a PCB that could process videos as well as images and be used on larger sized displays. Using a CompactFlash memory card, which quickly evolved into the more practical USB flash memory, I pioneered a ‘plug and play’ system which meant that users with little to no technical acumen could simply copy images and video onto their display via the integrated flash memory. Many years later, as cloud-based software become more popular, we also developed our own CMS platform. This provided users with a means of updating their displays remotely in an affordable and still relatively simple way.
STEINWAY & SONS MODEL S SOUNDBAR
The Steinway & Sons Model S Soundbar redefines soundbar performance, delivering extraordinary clarity, outstanding musicality, and exceptionally powerful bass. Made from machined solid aluminum panels, available in immaculate high gloss black with gold details, and with signature strings at the sides, the Model S Soundbar is as beautiful as it is timeless, built to last for decades.
Even though we began with a single wallmounted 32in model, I quickly realised that the requirements for each business type were much more varied than that of a consumer. For example, locations such as train stations, airports and hotel lobbies called for a freestanding display, and other businesses such as hairdressers and estate agents needed outward facing window displays. Over the last 17 years our range has grown and become exponentially more varied, with the development of other types of commercial displays, such as touch screens, outdoor displays and even battery powered screens. In recent years the popularity of DV-LED solutions has exploded and we currently have a wide range of both modular as well as packaged all-in-one solutions.
My goal was always to allow access to the benefits of businesses having promotional screens, regardless of size or budget. This has been a core value that the company has been built around, and as our portfolio expands, our mission remains the same.
What are you seeing as the major trends in digital signage currently?
In the last few years, we have noticed that there are a few display technologies growing in popularity, the first of which is high brightness displays for use in shop windows. This has been driven by the accessibility of LCD panels which have an increased resistance to temporary blanking defect. The advancement of this technology has also influenced the robust growth of outdoor LCD displays in the last 5-10 years. The rise of smart cities has also played a major role in this trend too. More recently, DVLED has exploded in popularity, this has been driven by the pixel pitch decreasing, meaning that higher resolutions can be achieved, as well as the price dropping. We’ve made it our mission to make this technology, which is significantly different to LCD technology, more accessible to our reseller partners and by extension their end user customers.
On the software side of things, there has been a shift in recent years from traditional and simple content management platforms to a more analytical approach. This has allowed users to understand user behaviour and measure ROI more accurately. In the last six years or so we have invested more into the R&D for our CMS platform, My Signage Portal. That being said, we still work with a huge number of reseller partners that either have their own software platforms or have a preferred thirdparty software. In spite of generally taking a simplified, fully integrated approach, we have always accepted that the digital signage market is an interdisciplinary and fragmented one, with parties such as content creators and integrators playing a key role in many projects. While Samsung are usually credited with pioneering the ‘system on chip’ approach and working with software partners to drive their hardware sales, a strategy which they have recently taken a U-turn on with the launch of their own VXT platform, we still believe that it is vital to nurture this ecosystem. We understand that the digital signage market is not only driven by hardware and it is crucial to work closely with all external partners to ensure successful projects.
As well as DV-LED technology, our own growth in recent years has been driven by the ability to manufacture bespoke solutions. Most recently we were chosen as the hardware supplier for a £5million project. The requirement was for large ultra-wide stretch LCD displays to be integrated into the gantries of specific counters in Tesco stores. Working alongside several of our integration partners we were able to manufacture over 5,000 displays as well as helping to facilitate and oversee the successful integration of these displays across 3,200 stores.
Tell us about winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation
From day one our primary goal has been to make digital signage accessible; winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the
exclusive category of Innovation came from the culmination of years of hard work from all of our teams, including product development, sales, marketing, service and support teams. We won this prestigious award due to the ‘user-friendly’ and ‘scalable’ nature of our integrated digital signage solutions. Winning this distinguished award was truly an affirmation that we were able to make this technology accessible.
Since we were awarded this great honour by the Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, we have received incredible international recognition. It has helped immensely with our international growth and business development, as well as acknowledgment and prestige domestically here in the UK.
Tell us about Vieunite and its off-shoot Vieunite Pro
Having worked in the digital signage industry for the past 17 years we fully understand that this market is still growing, with many SMEs still not completely capitalising on commercial display technology. The key purpose of this technology is for advertising and promotion; one important element of the effectiveness of this technology is novelty. In recent years screens have become so commonplace public spaces they have lost some of their ability to capture people’s attention in the same way they did 10 years ago. Most people only look at screens in public if they are actively seeking out information. Therefore, the effectiveness of commercial display technology must shift towards a content driven approach to engage people in new ways, by effectively utilising meaningful content. The initial concept of Vieunite came about by believing that art could be used as a primary source of content, giving an audience direct access to evocative and enjoyable content. We understand that this type of shift doesn’t happen overnight, and this is a long-term progression with the hope that this concept can play a large part in the next generation of digital signage.
Another impetus to establish this brand was the realisation that artists are not able to make a living from selling their work. One of my close personal friends, who happens to be such an artist that is not able to sustain a living with the income from their artistic endeavours, confronted me about Allsee’s ability to create a platform to achieve just this. The idea of creating a Texture accurate digital canvas, paired with an art library and marketplace for artists to sell their work digitally, was born from this. Our aim is to create a solution that is similar to Spotify, but for artists rather than musicians. Once again, we want to give access to the masses but this time rather than digital signage technology, accessibility to the seemingly exclusive world of art. This is the main reason we initially launched Vieunite as a consumer brand, in spite of our experience being in a B2B model.

B.E.G. TURNS ITS OWN HQ INTO ‘SHOWCASE FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY’
B.E.G.
has made an example of how buildings can become more sustainable by turning its own headquarters in Germany into a ‘showcase for energy efficiency’.
The construction and operations of buildings is deemed one of the biggest ‘climate killers’ accounting for 38% of global emissions according to research.
But B.E.G. in Lindlar, has become a ‘trailblazer for sustainable buildings’ thanks to the installation of a new server solution and state-of-the-art NetX building automation systems technology. The tech incorporates geothermal heat pump, ventilation, photovoltaic system, blinds, lighting, access and security areas to form a single automation system.
At Lindlar, the geothermal system is controlled via ModBus, the photovoltaic system via BACNet. Air quality, air-conditioning, shading, the control of the gate system and accesses are controlled via KNX, the lighting control via the in-house DALI-SYS. In the high-bay warehouse, a wireless system called Casambi is also used due to its flexibility.
Different communication protocols and bus systems such as Modbus, BACnet, KNX, DALI and Casambi become a functional unit under NetX via one simple router. Heating, shading, excluding unused areas, increasing security, all improve comfort at Lindlar.
B.E.G. employees have an individual access chip which opens and closes the access gate to the premises and activates the room air conditioning when a building area is opened.
In the offices, super-flat sensors are used to control the lighting and provide increased comfort. This changes the light colour during the day and helps support the natural biorhythm of the employees. In the dark winter months, the Human Centric Lighting (HCL) function ensures a fresh start to the day.
Special HVAC wall sensors not only control temperature but humidity too so fresh, oxygenrich air is experienced in the office rooms. In the process, it measures the proportion of volatile organic components - VOCs for short – so adhesives and chemicals that are emitted from walls, floors and furniture which can lead to feelings of illness are removed.
Human exhalations such as the smell of sweat, sulphurous compounds, essential oils, perfume, hairspray and deodorant are also VOCs. If there are too many of these VOCs in a room, it is automatically ventilated. The sensors are also used in the conference rooms of B.E.G. where many people spend long periods of time
and where permanently fresh air increases the ability to concentrate and the sense of well-being.
Hygienic and particularly energy-saving lighting of the sanitary facilities is implemented via another sensor, called the Indoor 180-KNXDX. It reacts to movements and then switches on the light. It also has a noise detection system. This means that it also detects a presence in individual cubicles. During periods of non-use, luminaires remain switched off.
By adjusting the BMS server via a KNX router in connection with a blind actuator and a KNX weather station, building automation at Lindlar can also be adjusted to the course of the sun. In this way, the climate is much more pleasant inside during the summer, while in winter the blinds provide additional thermal insulation.
A mixture of KNX, DALI and Casambi sensors are installed in the B.E.G. warehouse building. In the high-bay warehouse area, detectors with their excellent daylightdependent regulation in combination with KNX sensors help to ensure that optimum lighting conditions are always available.
B.E.G. has also implemented an innovative lighting guidance system where light accompanies the user through the warehouse like a ‘cloud of light’. Thanks to sensor coordination across groups and even lines, the light is fully activated in the area where the user is located. The surrounding areas dim to a fixed orientation light value. As a result, the user never has a completely dark area in their field of vision: all adjacent, visible aisles are illuminated with orientation light.
In all unused areas, the light is automatically switched off and energy is saved. All the different systems are controlled by a server located at each site and combined with a higher-level server installed in the administration building. This allows the greatest possible degree of failsafety through the use of several controllers as well as a maximum degree of control at the same time, and this is location-independent. The user only needs an internet-capable end device (smartphone, tablet, notebook) with a pre-installed browser and a secure connection.
The German manufacturer insists the ‘path to climate neutrality is through building automation solutions’ which is an ‘investment in the future’. Paul Jones, Sales Director of UK & Ireland at B.E.G, also says these type of systems are vital to the world in achieving its ‘climate goals’. The UK currently aims to reach Net Zero by 2050.
Paul says, “The B.E.G. HQ in Lindlar is a fantastic example of how using building automation systems can turn buildings into highly energy efficient spaces. Building automation also makes the use of a building a lot more flexible as control can take place digitally. Changes can be implemented quickly and cost-effectively with less effort.
“In any building in which sensors perceive their environment, energy can be saved in areas where no use takes place. In addition, weather data and existing lighting conditions can be incorporated to prevent energy waste.
“The savings also mean an increase in comfort for the building user, because there is no need to worry about functionalities such as air conditioning, lighting, or security as everything runs automatically.
“Since renewable energies are not sufficient to satisfy the current hunger for energy, the NetX B.E.G. technology installed at Lindlar can be key to the world achieving its climate goals.”

I’LL BE BECK!
Industry veteran and PBIAV Managing Director Philip Beck takes on the testing challenge of our industry questionnaire.
Tell us a little about your company; What do you specialise in? Who is involved?
PBI Audio Visual have been in business since 2003 and personally I have been in the AV sector for nearly 40 years. My son Dan now taking a leading role in the business means we have attained the expertise in providing a complete solution for a client.
What are you doing today work-wise?
Today I am completing a garden bar and gym with entertainment space that we have designed and built from the ground up, giving this customer a complete solution covering lighting, climate, security, audio and visual requirements.
Tell us about the projects you are working on right now?
At present we are finishing off a Dolby Atmos home cinema room which again we covered right from the start when the room was a kitchen, and the space has been completely converted to a home cinema room with seating for eight people. We covered all the specification and design and covered all the aspects from the black out automated curtains to wall acoustics and lighting.
How do you feel the industry in general is going right now?
I think the industry has grown stronger on retrofit networking and security and home cinema, but the new build market has reduced with many customers extending or building in their gardens.
What areas of the smart home and luxury AV sector need to improve and how?
Smart home technology is being flooded into the market from various providers, meaning that products may not be fit for purpose or have any reliability. I personally believe that customers need to be educated to why you would look towards well-known brands and integrators over a throw away product from big box retailers.
Do you think training needs to be improved? If so, how?
I do believe training needs to be more comprehensive and that it should be recognised within the industry, so if an integrator has done this training, they should be a preferred partner over someone who has not.

Is there a project you are particularly proud of and why?
The main thing I am always proud to see is a customer’s face when they are using their newly installed system, and you know the hard work was worth it.
Are there any brands or products you particularly like working with, and why?
After 40 years in the industry, I have worked with many brands, but currently we are enjoying working with Control4, when paired with the correct products it delivers a great platform for any home that is easy to use and build upon. We have primarily been using Sony for all our visual products. I don’t think there is a better projector range out there without blowing the budget. Bowers & Wilkins; We have been very impressed with the B&W range and how they have progressed within those last few years, giving customers excellent audio quality with a wide range to suite most budgets. The key thing for us is that having a great distributor that works with us is worth its weight in gold and can make a brand or product even more successful for us.
What is the best and the worst thing that has happened to you on site?
The worst was upon completion of a large home automation system we left site on a Friday ready for a deserved bank holiday weekend. The customer was not at home and the pool guys had left the pool filling at high pressure for us to get the call on the Tuesday morning saying that the basement was flooded where the rack room and majority of the hardware was situated.
The best, certainly many to think of here, but for me it was when we worked on a sensory solution covering various aspects of visual, auditory and touch stimuli within a large group of organisations in the UK and Europe to try to understand and develop how audio and video technology can be better used with children with special behavioural and educational needs.
What is the most unusual client request you have had?
It must have been 25 years or so ago, but we got asked to develop a multi revolving video display system weighing probably three tonnes. We did come up with a solution that surpassed the customer’s initial vision.
How do you see the sector changing in the future?
We have seen the integration of IP / networks, electrical and all our sector amalgamating over the last 20 years. This will certainly continue and I believe it will be the power and security management that will be the biggest areas of change.
Are there persons/organisations/ companies that have been particularly inspirational in your work life?
Probably my father being a business owner certainly has helped me along the way, but maybe the negative part was he was a workaholic.
Away from work what are your interests/hobbies?
Any activity that is fun and gets me away from my phone, I enjoy.
You have magic powers and get one wish concerning the smart home and luxury AV market; What are you going to wish for?
Reliable products that just do what is promised.
Favourite music and movies? What are you watching/listening to right now?
A bit of AC/DC Thunderstruck always makes me turn the volume up, but I enjoy a wide variety and working in this industry we get introduced to new music and genres by our customers all the time. I like comedy and you cannot stop laughing at Clarkson Farm
You can invite three people (living or not) out for a meal/drin; Who’s coming and why?
Well for a fun night probably James Corden, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a man that makes sense and for some just right-out laughter, Michael McIntyre.

From the company’s Dorset head office, the Harbour team has completed prestigious projects around the globe and pride themselves on the quality and workmanship of the installs completed. No matter the nature of the project, the firm has the expertise to deliver the perfect technology solution tailored to any client’s lifestyle.
When faced with the need for a comprehensive upgrade to their home automation system, a private client sought
the expertise of Harbour Automation. Recognising the pressing demand for modernisation and efficiency, the team embarked on a mission to revamp the existing infrastructure, delivering innovative solutions tailored to meet the client’s evolving needs. Through meticulous planning, cutting-edge technology integration and unwavering commitment to excellence, Harbour Automation is poised to transform this client’s living space into a seamlessly connected and intelligently controlled environment.
Steven Kelly, Harbour Automation MD, explains, “With the stunning property spanning around 50,000 SQ ft, this project presented
a monumental challenge that Harbour Automation enthusiastically embraced. Tasked with orchestrating a transformation on a grand scale, our team navigated the complexities of this expansive property with finesse and precision.
“From the sprawling outdoor spaces to the intricately designed interiors, every corner of the estate was meticulously outfitted with state-of-the-art automation solutions. Despite the scale of the endeavour, our dedication to excellence remained unwavering, culminating in a project of immense magnitude that we are exceptionally proud to have undertaken.”
18–19 SEPTEMBER
Steven expands on a few more details of this recent project, “We came highly recommended from another client after we had provided a whole home automation solution on their new build property the previous year. The private client resides in a property spanning around 50,000 sq. ft in the Surrey Hills. For us, this is the pinnacle of projects and one that has it all.
“After the initial meeting and the customer already knowing our history of quality workmanship and professionalism, the deal was more or less done. We carried out a full day of investigations before design commenced.”
Steven continues, “The initial brief was for a comprehensive upgrade to the existing infrastructure that was in rapid decline after
almost 15 years of use. After 13 years of Crestron, we proposed a sophisticated and highly spec’d Control4 system throughout the property that would provide the customer with the best possible experience for many years to come.
“Given our thorough design and implementation, we didn’t really come up again and there weren’t many challenges apart from just the pure scale of the site and that the family was always around whilst we transitioned from one system to another whilst trying not to have any downtime. It was almost like brain surgery as no matter what, we had to keep the Crestron functioning whilst ripping it out. That was the biggest challenge by far.”
Some other highlights were underlined by Steven, “Here at Harbour, we always go above and beyond for every single client. The cinema room alone is outstanding, but we added a four metre blind with artwork, one that conceals the immersive fixed cinema screen when not in use.
There are so many amazing parts to the project and it’s difficult to say without giving away too many details of this private location. The cinema room is pretty impressive along with the amount of automation throughout this impressive home.

ANTIFERENCE GOES WITH THE FLOW
Antiference has announced the launch of the new Wi-Fi 6 ceiling mount access point in the Clear Flow networking range.
The Air30 is an welcome addition to the selection of Wi-Fi access points offered in the Clear Flow range as it features the newest WiFi 6 (or 802.11ax if you want to get technical) technology for optimum performance.
Wi-Fi 6 technology is a new and more efficient way of handling data, improving speeds and increasing the number of users. Wi-Fi 6 systems can deliver multiple data packets to multiple devices at once, making it a faster process simply by a more efficient handling service. Additionally, the bandwidth of Wi-Fi 6 is increased allowing for a greater number of concurrent connections meaning a faster connection to the network for user devices.
All of this improves the speed of the connection to the Wi-Fi network, download speeds, increased numbers of users/devices etc meaning a much faster and more capable system. What does that really mean? Antiference says, put simply, if users want to stream a 4K or 8K movie while the kids are gaming online for example, Wi-Fi 6 will enable greater bandwidth to accommodate increased usage like this.
The new Clear Flow Air 30 features WiFi 6 tech as well as a host of other useful features. The dual band access point can deliver
Wi-Fi signals on the 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz bands, meaning a long range and fast transmission as well as the option for multiple SSIDs and the ability to manage users and devices. The Air 30 is also fitted with dual Gigabit Ethernet ports so is ideal for super-fast broadband systems.
SNAP ONE ANSWERS WHAT’S NEXT FOR WATTBOX?
Snap One has launched a new family of 20-AMP WattBox power distribution units for projects with 20-Amp requirements.
New 820 Series from WattBox delivers safe, conditioned power to 20-amp devices common in commercial and high-end home cinema, with all the remote monitoring features of OvrC.
Snap One has introduced a series of WattBox IP controllable power distribution units (PDUs) designed specifically for 20amp systems. The three PDUs comprising the high-amperage 820 Series retain many of the same features as WattBox’s original 15-amp 800 Series, including OvrC remote monitoring and resolution; self-healing auto reboot as well as control, scheduling and metering of individual outlets. These capabilities are in place to facilitate a smooth transition for systems integrators handling commercial and dedicated cinema projects, which often have high power requirements. Snap One says the 820 Series is designed to meet the demands of these high-power environments while delivering the reliability and functionality WattBox users have come to expect.
The first two models available in the 820 Series are the WB-820-IPVM-12 and WB-820CH1U-IPVM-8, featuring 12 and 8 individually controlled and metered outlets respectively. WattBox will follow this initial release with a two-outlet version, giving systems integrators options for jobs of all sizes. 20-amp and 15-amp outlets can be combined within a single 820 Series power distribution unit to meet the power specifications of a job.
The Air 30 is fitted with the same onboard programming software as other Clear Flow devices so is a seamless upgrade to any existing system and can be installed quickly and easily.
