LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE SPEAKERS!

One of our favourite product categories, once again, gets the attention it deserves in our latest dedicated supplement. One thing is for certain, this category has undergone huge changes in recent years. Going back a few decades, apart from a few notable exceptions, the speakers’ only job was to sound great, aesthetic concerns were perhaps of less importance, and often speakers tended to be good at ‘one thing’ rather than being great all-rounders.

Now, the market has moved on and more and more types of consumers wish to have their audio experiences enhanced, the demands placed on the humble speaker have increased. Gamers, movie fans and, of course, music aficionados all want their experiences to be the best that they can be, and in an increasing number of projects, the speaker has to cope

with all three of these functionalities in order to keep customers happy.

These days, there many more ways to enjoy high quality audio than there have ever been. Today, movies can be enjoyed in high quality surround sound from multiple different formats and new technologies such as spatial music platforms (like Dolby Atmos Music) are also coming on stream and providing listeners with other exciting worlds to explore. There is of course good old stereo still going strong and providing huge amounts of joy to customers of all types.

There is also the subject of aesthetics to consider. At EI, we firmly believe that form following function will often deliver strong visual appeal, this is as true today as it always has been. However, it is fair to say that manufacturers have recognised the need to do better in this area and are producing stunning looking products, creating more opportunities for high performance audio on show for those customers who like to see their speakers.

There have also been huge strides in discreet and hidden audio technology in recent years too. It is really no longer a question of always thinking about compromise when audio is hidden, but just what is appropriate for each project and customer, in confidence that whatever decision is made a qualitative experience will be the result.

The industry and many manufacturers we are delighted to recognise have really stepped up to the plate, offering remarkable advancements at many different price points and for many different applications.

The purpose of this particular publication is to give some of those companies a platform to explain what they have been up to and why installation companies should be looking in their direction when making their next purchasing decisions. Inside you’ll find a whole variety of distributors and manufacturers underlining the advantages hope their approach and we sincerely of you find the information interesting and useful.

With 7.2 channels of pure Marantz power, this is cinematic sound, redefined.

AWE Exclusive

AWE PREMIERES AUDIO STARS OF 2023

Meet the latest and greatest audio solutions from Bowers & Wilkins, Marantz and Rotel

From home cinema rooms, media rooms and multi-room integrations, AWE offers the latest high performance, highly desirable speaker and audio solutions from Bowers & Wilkins (B&W), Marantz and Rotel. Exclusively available to the professional custom installer from AWE, this trio of iconic brands - starring B&W 700 Series floorstanding speakers, Marantz Cinema range AV receivers and Rotel Diamond Series integrated amplifiers - presents the perfect combination for achieving five-star reviews and acclaimed project sequels.

THE BRILLIANT BOWERS & WILKINS 700 SERIES S3 FLOORSTANDING SPEAKERS:

Let’s start with the new ultra-high performing 700 Series by B&W. Installers will be thrilled to hear that the 700 series is fitted with the same acoustically incredible tech as B&W’s flagship

800 Diamond Series. After three years in development, the 700 Series has been realised with several transformative elements to elevate your project. We love the customisation and finer details of this range, such as cabinet design, construction and finish through to key acoustic and mechanical improvements.

In a first, the new B&W 700 Series presents slimmer cabinets showcasing a curved front baffle and drive units mounted in external ‘pods’. This design provides a direct visual and technical link to the 800 Series Diamond range as well as acoustical benefits. The revised form significantly reduces the impact

ESSENTIAL SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 04 SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 2023 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

of the loudspeaker baffle on sound quality by minimising the ‘cabinet diffraction’ effect. In terms of premium aesthetics, an all-new Mocha finish and beautiful, highly grained wood cabinets effortlessly complement the reworked dimensions and detailing of the 700 Series.

Bowers & Wilkins has incorporated its revolutionary Biomimetic Suspension in these loudspeakers, which dramatically reduces unwanted noise from the output of the spider as the midrange cone operates. The result is astounding midrange transparency. All models in the range also feature updated, larger diameter Flowports, for a more substantial output and expansive sound.

WHAT IS AVAILABLE IN THE BOWERS & WILKINS 700 SERIES

702 S3 Floor standing loudspeaker with Tweeter-on-Top

The flagship speaker of the range. This stateof-the-art floor-standing speaker defines new standards for performance in its class. If

you want the best, this is it. Its Carbon Dome tweeter is housed in an all-new Solid Body Tweeter assembly which, in combination with a downward-firing port configuration and trio of Aerofoil Profile bass cones, delivers unbeatable bass.

703 S3 Floor standing loudspeaker with Tweeter-on-Top

The new 703 S3 now features the iconic Tweeter-on-Top configuration for the first time, alongside a decoupled FST Continuum cone midrange driver, enhanced by the addition of Biomimetic Suspension and twin Aerofoil Profile bass drivers.

704 S3 Floor standing loudspeaker

This might be the slimmest floor-standing loudspeaker B&W makes, but the 704 S3 still packs a mighty punch. Its twin Aerofoil Profile bass drivers ensure ample extension and scale, while its decoupled Continuum cone FST driver delivers crystal clear midrange performance.

THE MARANTZ CINEMA SERIES

The Marantz Cinema Series establishes new benchmarks for high-end performance: impeccable sound quality, feature-rich design, and beautiful styling. The perfect partner for the B&W 700 series floorstanding speakers, the Cinema Series consists of a flagship preamp/processor with matching 16-channel amplifier and four AV receivers to indulge movie aficionados with the most superior, and stunning, at-home cinematic audio experience.

The AVRs boast superb performance and a powerful 3D soundscape thanks to the latest immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, plus 8K video available on multiple inputs, room optimisation available on multiple inputs, and additional features designed to enhance the at-home entertainment experience. With HEOS built-in technology they also support seamless multi-room set-up, so clients can still enjoy their favourite music, podcasts or sports from popular streaming providers or personal music libraries – connected via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and AirPlay 2.

THE ROTEL DIAMOND SERIES

A memorable finale for your audio integration - the Rotel Diamond Series comprises of the RA-6000 Integrated Amplifier and the DT6000 DAC, CD Player.

The RA-6000 Integrated Amplifier supports an exceptional array of modern and legacy sources with RCA, XLR, aptXTM HD, AAC Bluetooth and Coaxial, Optical and asynchronous PC-USB inputs. For vinyl lovers, the RA-6000 also features a Moving Magnet Phono stage. The design is elegant but there’s plenty of power under the hood, the RA-6000 delivers 350 watts of robust, Class AB output power into 4-ohm speakers. The Rotel toroidal transformer feeds dedicated power to all critical circuits, delivering ripple-free power with exceptional control of rich, deep bass energy.

The DT-6000 DAC supports Coaxial, Optical and PC-USB inputs as well as an integrated CD Player. Multi-channel processing delivers exceptional detail with an ultra-low noise floor, resulting in an immersive, expansive sound stage. The smooth action tray-loading CD player utilises Rotel’s award-winning disc spinners. The design includes a spring-floating CD mechanism with damping materials to reduce mechanical noise and vibrations during playback. Precision motor controls and the optical laser pick up every nuance from the CD.

BEALE STREET AUDIO –HEAR THE HISTORY

Dave Wilson of Dizzyfish Dizztribution sings the praises of Beale Street Audio, available exclusively in the UK from this passionate installer-focused distribution company.

Beale Street, Memphis Tennessee, America’s most iconic street and officially the home of the Blues and the true birthplace of Rock n Roll. In reference to this, Beale Street Audio, is creating its own iconic sound inspired by the energetic performances, synonymous with Beale Street. Beale Street Audio firmly believes that this rich history should be celebrated in the speakers that carry its name, and as such we are launching the #hearthehistory promotion.

So why should you look at what Beale Street Audio offer for your projects? We thought an overview from one of our team would help.

ARCHITECTURAL SPEAKERS: BUILT INTO YOUR LIFE

By their definition, architectural speakers are designed to be installed into ceilings or walls. They offer many advantages over conventional speakers, in that they can be built seamlessly into the home - making them something many of our clients request and a real mainstay for AV integrators.

Despite these advantages, typical architectural speakers often introduce several challenges for integrators such as sound loss into the cavity, low bass production due to lack of cabinet, noise pollution, exposure and lack of air flow control.

SONIC VORTEX TECHNOLOGY – ‘A TRUE GAME CHANGER’

It is in addressing these challenges that Beale Street Audio truly excels and earns its place as an architectural speaker range we are unable to see past.

Beale Street speakers use a Sonic Vortex technology which is based on the ‘ported transmission line design’ used in larger floor standing speakers and ultimately designed to move more air, giving them the capability to produce more bass. In Beale Street speakers a long port is wrapped around an integrated and sealed enclosure. This forces air through the cabinet at a high velocity, creating more bass in less space.

It is the use of this technology that allows them to provide all the advantages of an architectural speaker without the usual challenges.

So, what are the advantages offered by this range?

• More bass than can generally be achieved by typical architectural speakers.

• Built in protection for the speaker components.

• No back box problems such as rattle and restricted airflow.

• Control of the sound, meaning each speaker sounds exactly the same, despite any differences in location.

• In-ceiling subwoofers can deliver deep bass that can be felt, but does not take up much space.

The Beale Street Audio range includes over 25 architectural speakers to suit various requirements and budgets, ranging from the B Series, offering smooth sound and great value through the MB series, with a broader sound and deeper bass, to the BB Series offering more sound detail and power handling.

IS IT ACTUALLY ‘ALL ABOUT THAT BASS’?

After listening to these speakers, I am inclined to think that it is about so much more than just the bass as the sound quality is excellent at all levels. Sometimes listening to some of your favourite songs on a new piece of kit almost seems to transform the songs you know and love and give you a new enjoyable experience and this was definitely the case with this speaker range.

As integrators we have also found that a big advantage of these speakers comes in their inbuilt sound control ability which, not only means they sound the same, no matter the location, but also means it is easily possible to demo their use with clients. The sound you achieve by placing these on a table top pretty much emulates the sound they will produce in situ.

On top of all this these speakers really look the part with a stylish design that fits easily into any space. Oh, and did I mention the lifetime warranty?, because they have that too!

Put simply, these speakers look great and sound even better, providing an amazing sound solution for users and integrators alike!

form factor that features dual woofers. This in-wall solution is perfect for an LCR solution in a surround-sound setup. There’s also a terrific in-wall subwoofer, the IWS82, with dual eight-inch speakers that bring the LFEs to life in any movie.

OUTDOOR

Crestron’s innovative partnership with Origin Acoustics has taken the company’s entire speaker range to new heights, offering an incredible spectrum of sound for residential and marine applications with two complete lines of in-ceiling, in-wall, and landscape speakers.

Both lines use Origin’s patented, streamlined ‘bayonet ring’ installation system, as well as power handling that’s nothing short of remarkable. The lines include a baseline collection that provides excellent performance at a competitive price – the Crestron Reference series – and a premium solution, the Ultimate series.

In addition to the Origin lines, Crestron’s also released a new surface-mount Saros model – tough enough for outdoor use.

CRESTRON REFERENCE SPEAKERS IN-CEILING

Available in small aperture, 6in and 8in diameters (Reference IC6 and IC8) these twoway speakers feature woven glass woofers that provide well-defined low and midrange response with a compression molded woofer basket that complements the bottom end. Silk DPSP tweeters deliver clean, crisp highs effortlessly. These speakers are rated to handle a steady 100W of program power with a 200W peak at 8ohms.

IN-WALL

The Reference IW4X8 is a two-way rectangular speaker that features the same woofer and tweeter materials as the in-ceiling models in a side-by-side layout. Power handling is the same, too, and frequency response in this workhorse checks in from 60Hz to 20kHz. The speaker’s turn and click Spring Lock mounting system makes installation quick and easy.

OUTDOOR

The Crestron Reference outdoor solutions (Reference OD4.1 and OD4) pack a lot of punch for their size, with a 4.1 package that covers 1,500ft2. The kit handles 120W of continuous power and 240W peaks to provide superb audio for music or movies. Satellite expansion speakers are available individually as well.

CRESTRON ULTIMATE SPEAKERS IN-CEILING

Both the 6in and 8in models of Crestron’s audiophile-quality speaker solutions (Ultimate IC6 and IC8) can fit into the same opening with the Origin Acoustics bayonet ring solution – an installation process that takes seconds and requires no tools. The carbon fiber woofers and ceramic-coated aluminum tweeters in both sizes are rated for 150W of steady program power with peaks of 300W. The depths of both options clock in at under 5in, making these speakers perfect for a wide variety of challenging installations. For an even smaller reveal, the Ultimate IC3 (coming soon) has a tiny visible speaker area – a mere 3in in diameter –backed by a 6.5in driver behind the surface that handles 200W.

MARINE

Crestron’s Ultimate IC8-AW Marine speakers carry an IP66 rating, protecting against dust and water ingress. Built to handle the worst environments – not to mention salt – every connection and screw is designed to hold up for many years at sea, in a spa, or any other humid environment.

IN-WALL

This two-way option (Ultimate IWLCR62 and IWS82) brings all the technology and features of the in-ceiling Ultimate speakers into a rectangular

The 12in landscape subwoofer in the Crestron Ultimate line delivers 23Hz to 100Hz frequency response from its polypropylene woofer. This passive sub brings the bass at 200W continuous power handling and a whopping 400W at peak. Couple that with satellite speakers that deliver tremendous audio from their glass fiber woofers with co-located planar magnetic ribbon tweeter for great outdoor sound. Models are the Ultimate OD6T and IGS12T.

SUBWOOFERS

There are options here – choose either the booming dual woofers of the Ultimate in-wall subwoofer (the IWS82) or the in-ceiling model (ICS8) for those instances where an in-wall installation isn’t practical. Both are rated for massive power handling (200W continuous, 400W peak), and both can handle marine applications. The line also features Crestron’s first active sub, aptly dubbed the Ultimate Active Subwoofer made by Origin Acoustics. Constructed from premium carbon fiber materials with a unique design, this 10in, 400W subwoofer can be mounted on its side, upright, or on the wall.

SAROS - SURFACE MOUNT

The Saros SMT indoor/outdoor speakers are an excellent choice for a broad variety of both residential and commercial applications. These two-way solutions in contoured, weatherised enclosures are available in 6in and 8in form factors. They’re paintable to blend in with exterior (or interior) landscapes and décor and can handle 110W continuously with 200W peaks.

CERTIFIED AUDIO PROFILES

In addition to the time-saving installation features built into many of these solutions, every speaker carries its own pre-set Certified Audio Profile that can be accessed from the cloud and programmed in the Crestron DM NAX lines of amps and preamps. It’s a feature that saves even more precious minutes on the job site and takes your audio installation from good to great in a hurry.

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!

TV’s get thinner and thinner, Pictures get better and better, but somehow sound gets worse and worse. Delivering an ultra-thin soundbar that performs has become a major challenge for the CI industry.

NextLevel Acoustics took that challenge! Their uniquely designed, passive soundbars are made for the thinnest TV’s, right down to the ultra-thin Samsung Frame range.

The Fusion Frame and newer Frame Slim are designed for both the older (2020) and current (2021 onwards) models of the Samsung Frame, with the Frame Slim having just 3.2cm of visible depth. The range offer both Stereo and LCR speaker layouts and a choice of different finish options to match the screen’s frame, including a primer base coat to give that truly colour coordinated, designer finish.

At only 5cm deep, the Fusion Flat range again offers Stereo and LCR speaker configurations and is custom built to match your TV width. Offered with different surround

colours and an IR ‘notch’ option to absorb any odd shaping across the bottom of the screen, the Fusion Flat allows you to nestle the soundbar tight to the base of the TV for that truly integrated finish.

With the modern demands of customer and interior designers, the whole Fusion range genuinely offers unmatched audio performance and clarity for all projects. Starting at just £999.50 trade, NextLevel Acoustics really do seem to have all your ultra slim TV bases covered.

What about the Bass you say? Well, they have that covered too with NextLevel Acoustic’s hidden in-cabinet, 8in, 10in & 12in passive subs. Great when an install requires nothing to be seen but most definitely heard. The proprietary forward port firing, band pass design delivers ultra clean performance and higher SPL’s by concentrating its output along a waveguide and out through a kickplate, which can then be customized by a client’s cabinet makers. Easy to install, totally unique!

Then we come to the Elite Bar, or rather the Elite Enclosure! Designed specifically to hide a Sonos ARC, this unique bar has been acoustically engineered to enhance the ARC’s function and let it perform in an open-plan space. There is no need to have the ARC mounted forwards of the TV or reflecting sound off the ceiling and side walls. NextLevel Acoustic engineers took care not to impede any of the drivers, so Sonos Trueplay will still function and set up the room, allowing clients to enjoy an Atmos performance in its intended audio glory. With an Elite enclosure, suddenly you have an integrated look with full Sonos and Atmos functionality. With trade prices from £499.50 for a 65in enclosure to £1,574.50 for a 100in version, when you partner with NextLevel Acoustics you really can accommodate just about anything!

LET’S TAKE THIS OUTSIDE!

Garden Audio has always been a struggle to provide for customers as there has only ever been two options. Cheap, portable bluetooth speakers - which anyone can buy and use, or expensive systems that need separate amplification and control.

Well, American Audio Co and OSD Audio are setting out to change that in 2023. Their unique, bluetooth, on-wall and in-garden speaker packs give the luxury of built-in audio, without the traditional set up headaches or silly costs.

Simple to install and use, you just mount them on the wall or hide them in the garden, wire the speakers together, plug in the waterproof power supply and they wake up with a bluetooth connection for you to play from your phone, tablet or even via an OK Google/ Alexa command.

With the Bluetooth built into the speaker housings, they look good too. The modern, rounded design of the 5in and 6.5in on-wall patio speakers wouldn’t look out of place on

the wall of your favourite bar’s patio, whist the 5.25in or 8in Bluetooth rocks easily melt into the foliage of a garden boarder.

Then we have OSD’s super cool Sub/Sat system, again with bluetooth built in. Power the 8” subwoofer, connect to the Bluetooth and the sub and up to four smaller satellite speakers will have your garden dancing in next to no time. Perfect for parties, around a pool and hot tub or sharing tunes to different areas in your garden.

With a Sub/Sat system there is no need to deafen those on your patio area, just to be able to hear the music further down the garden and because everything is mounted low down, in amongst the foliage, you won’t be entertaining the neighbours at the same time.

The design suggestion is to position the main subwoofer (bass) somewhere in the middle of the garden boarders and fan the supplied waterproof speaker cable out to the left and right for the satellite (mid/high range) speakers.

American Audio also recommend feeding both a left and right channels in either direction

to give an even distribution of sound as you move around the garden and prevent any unusual sound imaging. This is best achieved in a L/R/Sub/L/R style of configuration.

With trade prices starting at £189.75 for the smaller 5.25in on-walls, only climbing to £399.25 for the Sub/Sat kit, these simple garden systems are an easy system addition and install for anyone working with smart home systems, garden rooms, lighting and electrics.

THE MERIDIAN APPROACH –POWERED BY DSP

Des Ford, Technical Marketing Manager at Meridian, explains the power of DSP.

DSP means much more to Meridian than it does to most other audio brands. The three words, ‘Digital’, ‘Signal’ and ‘Processing’ have been entwined in almost everything we’ve done since the 1980s.

As an industry we have experienced the proliferation of DSP in recent times. Most products’ use of DSP is limited to the adjustment of frequency response in some way. And whilst this is a valid approach to offering the functionality of a graphic equaliser, parametric EQ or tone controls, Meridian uses DSP for far more than that.

Every Meridian loudspeaker is a selfcontained audio system comprising of driveunits, amplifiers, digital-to-analogue converters and powerful DSP engineering – all contained within a sophisticated and inert cabinet with a luxurious finish. This design eliminates any electrical interference, noise and distortion that all cables can introduce to the signals they carry.

By using digital connections, we open up the opportunity to take advantage of our DSP

technologies without lossy conversion between the analogue and digital domain. The result is a loudspeaker capable of delivering maximum sound-quality, invaluable functionality and added user-controls.

At Meridian, we use DSP to tailor the sound sent to each drive-unit within our loudspeakers. We call this technology ‘Bespoke Signal Mapping’, and it takes the place of the analogue crossover circuits found in passive loudspeakers. BSM performs this task with supreme precision and control.

Our ‘E3 Bass’ technology expands, extends and enhances low-frequency performance, two forms of protection guard against damaging the drive-units, and ‘FFA’ (Full Frequency Alignment) automatically corrects for groupdelay so that all frequencies reach the listener’s ears at the same time.

In addition to the technologies which contribute to audio performance behind the scenes, DSP is harnessed in Meridian loudspeakers to provide integrators and users with features that can be used to overcome issues that are inherent in all audio systems.

ESSENTIAL SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 14 SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 2023 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

One example is Meridian’s ‘Free-Q’ technology, which can compensate for acoustic problems associated with specific loudspeaker placement conditions. When a loudspeaker is placed close to a wall or positioned in a corner, there is a perceived increase in bass output, but the increase is often ‘boomy’ and uncontrolled. We analyse how the bass from each of our loudspeakers behaves when they are used in these locations and, because we know how they should sound when used in free space, we can use our findings to design DSP filtering which counteracts the effect of each type of location. You can select the differing Free-Q settings while listening to music and dial-in the one that does the best job of making the walls disappear!

Another feature which overcomes a problem with many AV installations is ‘Image Elevation’. This helps in situations where the front loudspeakers are installed below the screen being used. To achieve this, we again analysed the sound from our loudspeakers; this time to identify how they sound when positioned at the height of the middle of the screen and compared this to their behaviour when mounted lower in height. Again, we used our findings to engineer a DSP-based solution so that the integrator can dial-in a varying amount of ‘virtual upwards offset’ until the picture and sound ‘snap’ together. Now, of course the sound is still coming from below the screen (our DSP is good, but it can’t cheat the rules of physics!) However, at Meridian, we understand the psychoacoustics

behind how we hear; the human brain ‘wants’ sounds and images to be meshed together – after all, that’s what we’re used to in real-life. Image Elevation gives our perception the helping-hand it’s already looking (and hearing) for!

So, if you’ve read this far, you’ll appreciate that Meridian has chosen to challenge convention in our approach to the design of loudspeakers. Naturally, our aim is to produce the highest possible sound quality from all our products. However, our research also allows us to break new ground in how we deliver that sound in the real world - both in what happens

within the loudspeaker itself, and in the way the loudspeaker works in the installation. The development of our own technologies allows us to offer novel functionality to solve real-world problems faced by integrators every day. What’s not lost on us is that all of this is taking place in the background, while customers enjoy the results, blissfully ignorant of why their playback system delivers an authentic, lifelike and natural listening experience.

THE VOICE OF VELODYNE ACOUSTICS

UK distributor Redline introduces a duo of innovative subwoofers from bass specialist Velodyne Acoustics - the VI-Q and Deep Waves Series.

Since 1983, Velodyne Acoustics has been delivering a unique approach to low-frequency creation, making it one of the leaders in this field. Today, its products bring a new dimension to music, games and movies, with a strong emphasis on creating a wide range of products - appropriate for many different applications and customers.

VI-Q

The VI-Q is a fresh app-controlled, ultra-high output, low distortion subwoofer available in 10in, 12in and 15in versions. Combining attractive cabinets in a high-quality matte black scratch-resistant paint, the VI-Q was created to be the beating heart of any stereo or home cinema application by delivering defined, accurate bass. A highly efficient carbon frontfiring firing driver produces impressive bass output, setting a new standard in performance at its price point and beyond.

The VI-Q operates in a closed cabinet design, achieving an unparalleled precision in bass reproduction. The acoustically optimised housing is made of HDF with additional bracings inside is designed to eliminate any resonances that might interfere with performance. The completely redesigned driver is built into a 50mm/2in thick, 21-layer plywood baffle ensuring perfect working conditions. The subwoofer’s dynamics and tight bass response is also ensured through the use of feet that are milled from solid aluminium and finished with a rubber base, which not only

minimizes any unwanted subwoofer movement but also enhances overall performance.

Professional room tuning is made possible via the new iWoofer Pro app, allowing the customisation of performance for every project. Through an automated room correction process, the product will adjust to the environment and achieve the maximum amount of SPL with a more linear response that is tailored to any listening preferences. Included within the application is a 12/24/48dB/octave crossover, allowing an even steeper frequency cut off if needed.

Other key features include high level connectors as well as RCA and XLR inputs/ outputs that complete the DSP-controlled Class D amplifier board with up to 1200W of power. The VI-Q series also features anti-clipping and overheating circuitry to prevent distortion.

DEEP WAVES

The all-new Deep Waves Series (Deep Waves 10 and Deep Waves 12) boast attractive cabinets in a similar high-quality matte black paint to the VI-Q. This line offers an expansive performance curve, designed along the same principle as the highly successful MicroVee line with a highly efficient front firing driver partnering two side firing passive radiators to produce highly impressive bass output. The high-quality housing is made of MDF with additional bracings to increase stability and performance. This product line also has access to - and has been created to work in harmony with - the iWoofer Pro app delivering pro level room correction to each application.

The Deep Waves Series also boasts 800W of advanced Class D amplification combining patented core technologies from the subwoofer experts at Velodyne Acoustics. A new DSP controlled effective Class D amp board with dual high output 880W MOSFET power stage takes performance up to new levels at this price point and like all Velodyne Acoustics subwoofers, the Deep Waves series incorporates anti-clipping and overheat circuitry. These products also benefit from a high-purity 2.5in copper voice coil with a four-layer winding design which minimises distortion and power compression with maximum heat dissipation, linearity, and tuned magnetics for precise high excursion. With its 6in spider, this driver can deliver a 28mm Xmax for maximum SPL.

Martin Morecroft, Redline MD, says, As we know bass is massively important in all music, media and gaming applications. It is often one of the more difficult things to deliver really well. A bass specialist brand like Velodyne can help by offering strong lines that bridge a wide variety budget, application and size requirements. This year Velodyne launches three new lines, with VI-Q and Deep Waves coming to market in early Q2. SPL-X will arrive early in Q4 along with Velodyne’s proprietary DSP APP. This new feature laden APP will also operate throughout the entire Velodyne range. Velodyne is back to its innovative best, delivering exactly what installers need.

DON’T FOLLOW THE HERD, CHOOSE BISON FROM TOTEM ACOUSTIC

TOTEM FLEXIBILITY

Totem has impressive abilities right across the audio spectrum and another great example is the KIN Play Tower, providing all the coveted qualities that contributed to the remarkable success of the award-winning KIN Play series. Users can connect all their wireless and wired sources to be rewarded with a bold, hard-hitting performance.

Bluetooth 5.0 aptX HD allows high resolution, simultaneous streaming from one device to two pairs of KIN Play Towers, or to the Bluetooth 5.0 equipped KIN Play Sound Bar (more about that in a minute).

Installers can use the KIN Play Tower to create a powerful audio hub for all the users sources and activities from providing turntable hook-up, to a gamer who wants to take their immersive audio experience to a new level or a home cinema fan who needs powerful, precise audio. An amp bypass input and auto on/input simplify connection to streaming components and custom installation systems too.

UK distributor Redline explains how Totem Acoustic continues to add to its range, with the Bison Series joining popular products like the Kin Play Tower and Kin Play Sound Bar.

The Bison epitomises strength, stability and consistency, three words that accurately describe Totem Acoustic’s 35-year journey of continual success.

The series is initially comprised of threemodels, Bison Monitor, Bison Tower and Bison Twin Tower. The Bison Monitor has been created to redefine the bookshelf category, defying visual expectations coupled with a sonic performance rarely associated with a small enclosure. The Bison Tower and Bison Twin Tower are aimed at those who want a loudspeaker that’s equally proficient with all sources and mediums. Bison loudspeakers are not finicky about placement or electronics, and were created to take charge and effortlessly manage a myriad of sources.

The Bison Monitor has exceptional width and depth of image resulting in more spatial and lifelike restitution, ultra-fast responsiveness, and exquisite harmonics, particularly in the upper octaves. Achieving this level of performance does not happen overnight, a huge number of aspects and components draw on the company’s knowledge and history. For example,

the woofer is the result of four generations of development and provides a greater dynamic capability combined with a 43% increase in the cabinet volume vs other products from the company - such as the well established SKY Monitor. This product is a true ‘plug and play’ monitor that is easy to drive and flexible with regards to placement.

The lateral sound staging abilities of the Bison Monitor were applied to both the Bison Tower and Bison Twin Tower, resulting in ultrawide and deep characteristics with great ‘centerfill’, whereby musical information hits you from all sides. Both Bison Towers are easy to drive and offer a flexible setup delivering impressive performance in the midrange and fantastic harmonics. The Bison Twin Tower offers a more powerful scale that is capable of filling a larger space while maintaining virtually the same phase coherency as the Bison Tower, yet is still comfortable in a smaller room. Finally, both Bison Towers create the perception of a slightly warmer sonic signature in comparison to the Bison Monitor as a result of a frequency response that extends well into the bottom octave, yielding bass response that is round, sumptuous and fast, while sounding musical. Get in touch to find out more about this highly accomplished new introduction.

Pure 200W RMS digital amplification employs no DSP, preserving the phase linearity responsible for KIN Play Tower’s holographic soundstage.

The popular soundbar category got a seriously high-performance addition when the KIN Play Sound Bar arrived offering the connectivity and performance to enable TV, home cinema and gaming to become the exhilarating and involving experiences they should be. Music could also be wirelessly streamed in high resolution for a powerful, startling realism. A varied array of equalisation settings also ensures the KIN Play Sound Bar adapts to every application, satisfies every listening preference, and excels at any volume level.

Customised KIN Natural Hybrid woofers and Metal Alloy tweeters are driven to perfection by a bespoke dynamic digital amplifier.

There is more good news on this product as the updated version is due for release end of March. This version has all the same inputs as the original, along with the in-built wireless to work with the Kin Sub 10 and the Solution Sub but will also fe ature ARC compatibility via an HDMI input too.

2023: A PIVOTAL YEAR FOR IMMERSIVE AUDIO

L-Acoustics Creations has seen unprecedented growth in immersive audio, from live music to residential systems, and expects 2023 to be a breakthrough year for spatial audio.

The global music industry enjoyed another year of record growth in 2022 and shows no sign of slowing into 2023. Live music continued to bounce back from Covid while streaming services are predicted to have grown by almost

8% to over $37bn. (source: Goldman Sachs.)

The analysts’ predictions for 2023 are equally robust, driving artist creativity from songwriting to recording alongside innovative new ways of delivering the listening experience.

“Both live music and streaming services are embracing immersive audio, and the concept really hit the mainstream last year,” says Nick Fichte, Director of Sales for L-Acoustics Creations. “Across content recorded for

streaming to the way sound is mixed at live venues, immersive audio is capturing the imagination of artists and audiences alike, while becoming a standard feature of many streaming platforms’ premium service offerings.”

London-based electronica and techno producer, Max Cooper is a big believer in the future of immersive audio and has been a featured artist in L-Acoustics Creations’ own immersive listening room. Commented Max, “I’ll keep doing the spatial side of things. It’s not just about sounding nice for the sake of it. You can convey more information, you can express emotion with the spatial forms and that’s what I’m really interested in.”

L-Acoustics has been at the forefront of the immersive audio movement for several years, developing sophisticated recording and processing software for sound engineers as well as premium pro-audio equipment for small venues to stadiums. For smaller commercial spaces and premium residential and marine installations, L-Acoustics Creations, a division devoted to architectural audio technologies, played a pivotal role in demonstrating the power of immersive audio in two important hubs of the music scene, London and Los Angeles.

ESSENTIAL SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 2023 21 essentialinstall.com @Install_mag /Essentialinstall

The company has created stunning sound spaces in these cities, each equipped with an 18.1.12 concert-grade sound system to deliver unrivalled playback of music mixed in spatial audio formats. This includes Dolby Atmos and spatial audio in L-Acoustics’ own technology known as L-ISA (Immersive Sound Art).

Ticketed public listening sessions at these unique venues were a sell-out throughout 2022, frequently organized in collaboration with Pitchblack Playback. During these intimate sessions, about 30 music fans gather to hear an album from start to finish, lights out or blindfolded for a truly immersive sensory experience. Events have included the premiere of Memoria by Trentemøller, the premiere of MORE D4TA by Moderat, Jon Hopkin’s Music for Psychedelic Therapy and the premier of the Dolby Atmos remix of Bicep Isles, Prince and the Revolution Live and Talking Heads 77.

As more high-profile artists become involved in immersive audio, the events have expanded to incorporate VIP invite-only sessions, including artist Q&A. This year’s ‘headliners’ in the L-Acoustics Creations’ spaces have included Talking Heads, Robert Koch, Snarky Puppy, and Max Cooper.

One of the highlight sessions for the L-Acoustics Creations team involved Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree; producer, artist, musician and expert spatial audio mixer. The events, titled “Spatial Audio According to Steven Wilson”, attracted a high-level group of music industry and technology experts from

prominent recording studios, major labels, and streaming services. Guests were treated to an early preview of a track from Steven Wilson’s upcoming solo album, The Harmony Codex, which he composed specifically with spatial audio in mind.

Commented Steven Wilson in a subsequent interview with YouTube personality Rick Beato, “There’s a great L-Acoustics Creations room in North London which is an 18.1.12 system and I’m booking those rooms and doing as many playback sessions as I can. Turn your phone off, we’re going to turn the lights off, and you’re going to hear a record the way you used to listen to records.”

L-Acoustics Creations’ immersive listening rooms have continued from strength to strength throughout 2023 so far, having kicked off in January with Pitchblack Playback sessions in London and LA, featuring the canonical King Crimson, In the Court of the Crimson King, presented in an exclusive spatial audio mix by Steven Wilson.

“Having respected artists choose the L-Acoustics Creations showrooms as a venue to premiere their immersive mixes really pays testament to the quality of our products,” adds Nick Fichte. For commercial and residential integrators, immersive audio adds another premium facet to their offering. “For customers looking for the very best in music reproduction to encompass immersive audio formats available now and into the future, we offer a range of solutions,” he concludes. “From professional

5.1 and 7.1 sound systems to bespoke designs and immersive sound spaces capable of music and cinematic playback, these systems fully convey the excitement of spatial audio formats there’s no going back to stereo.”

GIVE YOUR CUSTOMERS ‘A CINEMA IN THE HOME’, NOT A HOME CINEMA

Connected Distribution’s Product Director, Mike Bonnette, explains the difference and why the Aurea brand changes the home cinema landscape.

Designing speakers for cinemas is a wholly different game to designing speakers for Hi-Fi and home cinemas. In Hi-Fi and traditional home cinema it’s about precision, accuracy, clarity and that indefinable thing, musicality. In cinemas it’s about precision, accuracy, clarity, wide dispersion, intelligibility in the near-field and higher sound pressure levels. Cinema sound is very different from music reproduction as the soundtrack contains dialogue that tells the story, as well as music and special effects, and spans a vast frequency range, meaning the speakers have to work hard.

It’s something that Luis Wassman, Founder of Madrid based LW Speakers, one of the world’s foremost suppliers of loudspeakers to the commercial cinema sector, knows only too well. He is a cinema industry legend, whose career started with the manufacture and supply of 35mm film projectors. In the early 1990s, when Dolby systems started to appear in cinemas, Luis diversified into speaker design to service the growing need for better quality audio systems to complete the package of projection and sound. He’s been designing and supplying speakers to the likes of BFI Imax, London, Odeon Leicester Square, and 10 screens, including two Dolby Atmos and one Imax, at the Odeon Milton Keynes, and hundreds of other venues around the world ever since.

Aurea is the domestic brand created by LW Speakers in 2015. But when we say

‘domestic’ don’t think about the usual on-wall or in-wall speakers sold by CI manufacturers and distributors – these are scaled down (although in some cases not by much) versions of the cinema speakers that deliver the same quality and dispersion characteristics of movie soundtrack reproduction as the LW Speakers products deliver in cinemas. When we met with Luis he was very careful to point out that Aurea speakers are not home cinema speakers, but are ‘cinema speakers for the home’.

What Aurea has achieved with its residential products is the goal of ‘intelligibility in the nearfield’ in the same way it did for commercial cinema, allowing home users to experience their movies sounding like they do ‘at the movies’. This is the game changer for the install industry – now you can provide a truly genuine cinema experience in the home for your discerning clients.

The Aurea range is vast, covering every eventuality for home installation, from the diminutive neo range of compact enclosures that are perfect for media rooms (but also adhere to the cinema design principles), up to the almost professional sized Aurea 26 screen system and Aurea 21 Sub with its 21in bass driver. These larger models are available with or without builtin amplification and DSP control.

Perhaps more commonly installed in domestic settings are the Aurea In-Wall range, which are designed to fit in standard stud walls, behind acoustically transparent screens or fabric walls. If you came to EI Live!, it’s this system that you experienced in our Dolby Atmos/ DTS-X demonstrations, so you’ll know what it’s capable of.

Several specialist ceiling mounted co-axial speakers and wedge-shaped surround speakers complete the line-up. And the ability mix and match all the models in the Aurea range without compromising tonality or dispersion, makes it hugely versatile and suitable for all installations.

The amplification is key also to achieving that cinema sound experience in the home. Under the Aurea brand a complete suite of amplification products is available, which are identical to the amplifiers supplied to the commercial cinemas by LW. These range from two-channel to 16 channel models with up to 12,000W in diminutive 2U chassis and prices that won’t blow your mind. And, to achieve the perfect performance characteristics, a dedicated DSP processor is available, enabling each speaker and the entire system to be configured to the cinema industry response curve. And, once again, this is the same system used in the cinemas - not a domestic system like the ones you can find in home cinema processors.

We’re stocking demonstration products from across the ranges to enable you to experience the speakers for yourselves. Customer installations will be manufactured to order and we will be offering on-site DSP configuration assistance to ensure the perfect ‘Cinema In The Home’ results.

Take a look at Aurea and see for yourself how you can give your customers a true cinema sound experience in the home.

DESIGN-LED SPEAKERS FOR SENSATIONAL SOUND

Invision, looks at the desire for not just great sound but design-led speakers when it comes to audio systems.

From the sleekness of a modern OLED TV to the quality finish and feel of a custom light switch, the post-Apple design ethos has permeated everything that we choose to install into our homes. As we crave an aesthetically pleasing and efficient home, scrutiny increases with every choice. And particularly, within those homes where the client has engaged a custom install professional to improve the systems on which their home depends.

Along with the CI professional, increasingly there are other specialists on-site. For a new build or a major renovation, the architect will have strong ideas about how the finished build should look, and work. And if there is an interior designer involved too, then there is the potential for a three-way difference of opinion.

As homeowners become more aware of what is possible, thanks to access to wider inspiration through the likes of their Instagram or Pinterest feed, or from the multitude of home improvement vlogs and TV shows; the awareness that clean lines and symmetry can improve the ‘feel’ of personal space by creating balance, calmness, and stability is on the rise.

According to the American physicist Alan Lightman, the human brain strives to see things symmetrically. He says, “I would claim that

symmetry represents order, and we crave order in this strange universe we find ourselves in… [it] must help us make sense of the world around us”.

As a result, the way something looks and makes us feel is of upmost importance to the end user.

Traditional in-ceiling speakers, despite having flush-to-ceiling grilles and a neutral colour finish, are circles on a ceiling that some clients and some decorators just will not tolerate. But a good quality, easy to use, audio system will still be part of the brief.

Plaster-over, or ‘invisible’ speakers are popular with interior designers, but they have never been able to match traditionally built speakers in terms of performance, and therefore rarely appear in more crucial listening environments such as media rooms or in homes where the client expressly wants a great sound system.

There is a place for invisible speakers, but the understanding is always there - that the audio will be somewhat compromised in favour of the room aesthetics.

The new Origin Acoustics MOS36 addresses both of these challenges by delivering great performance, whilst also respecting the interior design requirements.

According to CEDIA’s Integrated Home Market Analysis - 2021, 9% of a CI’s revenue in the UK was from audio systems and there was an anticipated growth in the market of 33% in

2022. The business is there for CIs to install exceptional audio systems for their customers that fits in with their desired home aesthetics. Hence, the need for the new Origin minimal opening speaker system.

The new MOS36 is the latest addition to the minimum opening system line of products from Origin Acoustics. The easy to install enclosure provides amazing low frequency response from a 6in fibreglass woofer, which ports around a 2in wide-band aluminium driver, providing a well-balanced sound from a design centric 4in opening.

The system includes six different finish choices, in square, round, and both flushed and surface mount options, along with the necessary spacers to adjust for various surface material thickness. This speaker is the most recent in a series of products that address the interior design needs of today’s modern homes, while still delivering the high-performance sonic experience that customers desire.

The ability to satisfy the designers vision with the finish of the lounge or kitchen/diner, by keeping the 4in grilles in line with the GU10 light fittings, is huge.

And to be able to experience full-range, beautiful music from such discrete openings, is game-changing.

TRIAD PDX LOUDSPEAKERS EXCEL IN PERFORMANCE AND EASE OF INSTALLATION

Snap One, the partner for audio in the custom installation channel, explains how recent loudspeaker innovations are bringing an uplift in audio quality alongside simpler and faster installation.

Snap One is all about making life easier for its Partners and for their clients.

We all know that this is a fast-moving industry, one that is constantly evolving, whether that’s around technology innovation, our lifestyle needs, or, often, both.

In this industry, it’s important for our Partners to be able to keep pace with these changes and be in as strong a position as possible to take advantage of opportunities. Nowhere is this clearer than in the audio market where the Snap One brand, Triad, is leading the way with innovation that meets the needs of our Partners as well as those of their customers.

Launched in Summer 2022, the Triad PDX Series of architectural speakers provide Snap One Partners with a solution that pairs the premium audio performance that Triad is known for with a simplified installation experience made possible by Push Lock by Swarm technology.

The series includes thirteen speakers and nineteen accessories, including optional custom-coloured grilles, rear enclosures and pre-construction brackets for discrete in-wall and in-ceiling installation.

Designed and engineered at the Triad HQ in Portland, Oregon where artistry, engineering and experience intersect to create category-defining products, Triad PDX creates a remarkable listening experience by using high-performance materials and the finest components like carbon fibre, Kevlar, Teteron, dual voice coils, chemically etched metal components, and more.

For example, on Triad PDX Series 4 loudspeakers within the range, the high carbon fibre count adds to the woofer’s strength and responsiveness ensures stunning linear tonal balance, while the cone’s PVA coating dampens resonance for higher sonic purity. A high excursion 1-1/4in voice coil allows increased motor stamina, heat reduction, improved power handling, and superior bass performance.

ESSENTIAL SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 28 SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 2023 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

Meanwhile, on Series 5 Triad PDX loudspeakers, the infusion of Kevlar into carbon fibre for the woofer allows customers to experience every audible detail with precision technology and build quality. The interwoven Kevlar and Carbon fibre with PVA coating command higher control of cone breakup, while the aluminium shorting ring further fine-tunes sound with tighter bass and enhanced distortion reduction. The fusion of top-tier material selection and design distinction of Triad PDX has yet to be seen in architectural audio.

EASY INSTALLATION

To make installation a breeze for Partners, Triad PDX uses Push Lock, an exclusive toolless mounting solution specifically designed for Snap One. The proprietary installation technology – which is employed in Signature by Episode speakers – allows for an upgrade path to a more premium product by securing the speaker with the simple press of a button for fast and secure installation.

The two-piece baffle/speaker module assembly allows Partners to easily remove the speaker while leaving the cradle and grille in the ceiling or wall – preventing the speaker from being stolen or damaged during the construction process and allowing for HVAC pressure testing for certification of occupancy.

The series also includes helpful accessories like construction brackets that offer flexibility during a new build or install process, rear enclosures for all models that can control air volume and sound propagation to adjacent rooms, and replacement grilles for all models that can be painted and custom-ordered to match the project aesthetics.

Triad PDX is ideal for Partners who want to bring the Triad sound into architectural speaker applications where audio performance can now be improved to capitalise on the market opportunity supported by a faster, more efficient and more flexible installation process.

Take home cinema design as an example. In recent years, homeowners have invested significantly in their entertainment set-ups within their properties. A premium home cinema offers an experience that can be far superior to the local multiplex and do full justice to the high-

quality content made available by streaming services, TV and movie channels and on Blu-Ray.

SOUND OPPORTUNITIES

Delivering a Dolby Atmos cinema, in particular, offers great opportunities for Partners to create as full, rich and immersive an experience as possible.

Triad is a brand that’s aligned with Dolby and has been for many, many years. Triad was selected by Dolby Labs as their Development Partner for Home Atmos, creating a long and fruitful relationship. It resulted in Triad teaming with them to demonstrate Home Atmos for the first time at CEDIA in 2014, even before Atmos capable electronics were released.

Now with Triad PDX, Snap One is in a great position to support and advise Partners on the best way to demonstrate and deploy these highquality immersive cinemas for their clients.

Another opportunity for growth is the multidwelling unit space. Equipping properties for sale with multi-room audio is frequently in the spec for a smart home, but there’s often so little in the budget that Partners may often be forced to compromise on audio performance. They may feel obliged to fit low quality, affordable in-ceiling loudspeakers to tick a box for the developer at

little or no margin, or benefit to themselves, or the eventual homeowner.

The Triad PDX two-piece baffle/speaker module assembly allows Partners to fit the cradle and grille in the ceiling at an early stage of the build but no actual speakers until the property has been sold. When the home is purchased, it’s an immediate upgrade opportunity for the Partner to remove the speaker grille, add in the full Triad PDX speaker and provide a high-quality audio experience for the new homeowner.

Triad PDX loudspeakers have been expertly engineered and tirelessly refined to provide the best audio experience possible. Now, pairing that with easy installation, Partners can provide premium sound from sturdy, customisable, beautiful and easy-to-install architectural speakers at their fingertips. It’s the perfect marriage of simplified installation technology with Triad’s legacy of excellence in engineering, construction and performance.

Existing Snap One/Control4 Partners can learn more about Triad at dealer-emea.control4. com. To apply to be a Partner please visit control4.com/for/dealers.

With its shallow profile, the new Rumble-KU315 combines power and compactness, for applications where space and visual aesthetics are at a premium yet there is

no room for compromise on sound quality. The largest of the Rumble range, RumbleKU315 is suitable for outdoor as well as indoor installation, there is also a marine version for especially challenging environments.

Also new is the Thunder-KSC12P infrasubwoofer for boutique and home cinema applications. With its pared-down dimensions, Thunder-KSC12P offers even greater versatility for smaller spaces. Furthermore, both Rumble and Thunder are now Dolby ATMOS certified and feature in the DARDT Dolby ATMOS Room Design Tool.
