Dirac Live Bass Control, Now Available for Denon & Marantz

BOWERS & WILKINS ISW-8 AND CDA-2HD: THE PERFECT PAIR

Whether creating an immersive home cinema space or a high-end setup for music lovers, the right subwoofer is crucial to ensure impactful bass, richer sound and unbeatable clarity. New offerings from Bowers & Wilkins via AWE offer all this and more.

The long-awaited ISW-8 subwoofer from Bowers & Wilkins is now available from AWE. Paired with the CDA-2HD subwoofer amplifier, it’s already making an impact, delivering exceptional performance for custom install applications.

The ISW-8 has been extensively engineered to deliver the full performance of Bowers & Wilkins’ flagship DB1 standalone subwoofer, whilst being thin enough to install within standard partition walls.

It features a number of new innovations to guarantee power and precision, and it is this remarkable design that sets it apart from other in-wall subs. The ISW-8 features the longest excursion from an in-wall subwoofer Bowers & Wilkins has ever made and a 12in Aerofoil bass driver. In addition, the ISW-8’s entire motor system is mounted externally in front of the cone, rather than at the back, which

significantly reduces the subwoofer’s depth to a super-slim 100mm.

INSIDE THE ISW-8 SUBWOOFER

To make this possible, the engineers at Bowers & Wilkins’ Research Facility selected the strongest type of permanent magnet material commercially available – eodymium. In order to keep it cool, airflow is directed away from the drive unit, allowing the magnet to remain at optimal temperature. And to complete the revolutionary configuration, the chassis employs low-profile aluminium legs arranged in a triangular formation for rigidity. These double as a heat sink for the motor system to reduce thermal compression. The result is an incredibly efficient motor that delivers a deep, dynamic bass response.

The innovations continue with the ISW8’s back box, designed to minimise vibrations transferring into the walls, thanks to integrated vibration isolation mounts. This all-new mounting system decouples the unit by hooking onto a silicone assembly specifically designed to eliminate the transfer of bass frequencies

and ensure a clean bass performance, providing both improved performance and structural integrity. The sealed 30 litre cabinet uses matrix bracing for increased rigidity, giving a frequency range of 12Hz-260Hz – outstanding for an inwall subwoofer.

Designed to work with high-end custom install loudspeakers such as the CI 700 and CI 800 from Bowers & Wilkins in home cinema and high-performance two-channel installations, it also pairs perfectly with the new CDA-2HD high-power distribution amplifier.

Bowers & Wilkins’ Custom Installation Subwoofer range also includes the long-throw ISW-3 and ISW-4 and the new closed box ISW-6. The latter is a discreet, compact and versatile custom installation subwoofer that features twin ‘racetrack’ drivers arranged in a force-cancelling configuration. It is designed to add powerful bass in rooms including Bowers & Wilkins CI 300 or CI 600 Series speakers. The large sound comes from a visible grille of only 136mm x 267mm.

FEEL THE POWER OF THE CDA-2HD DISTRIBUTION AMPLIFIER

When it comes to the CDA-2HD distribution amplifier, power and flexibility have been designed in throughout. With active electronics to achieve a big sound from a smaller box, and dynamic equalisation to improve the performance of the ISW-8, the CDA-2HD superbly enhances the listener’s experience of this no-compromise in-wall subwoofer, delivering outstanding audio results and total control.

“Due to the tailored DSP for Bowers & Wilkins installation speakers, this versatile amplifier can be used in many applications. Whether it’s for a super clean and powerful cinematic experience, or for listening to delicate

music, the flexible setup makes the CDA-2HD the perfect amplifier for any home installation.” Comments James Drummie, Product Manager at AWE.

Watch this video to find out more about the CDA-2HD

The CDA-2HD comes with embedded DSP that allows optimisation of a wide range of products and dynamic EQ for Bowers & Wilkins subwoofers. It boasts two channels of 500 watts each within a half-rack width 2U design, ensuring high performance for minimal rack space. Innovative mounting brackets included in the box also enable two CDA-2HDs to be attached together and both installed in only a 2U rack.

Another recent addition to Bowers & Wilkins’ distribution amplifier offering is the CDA-4D, which can power the ISW-6 to new levels of performance and can drive two of the subwoofers with 250W to each speaker.

Set up of both the CDA-2HD and CDA-4D is quick and easy via a simple web interface. If you have any questions about any of the latest Bowers & Wilkins subwoofers and amps, check out this Q&A video

“With the addition of the ISW-8 and CDA-2HD, Bowers & Wilkins now completes the most powerful and versatile line up of installation subwoofers they have ever had. The ISW-8 offers deep, extended, powerful sub bass which has not been experienced from an installation subwoofer before. Installers looking to complete cinema and media room installations, along with high-end listening rooms, now have a subwoofer which may not be seen but will definitely be heard.” Concludes Ben Davidson, Head of Elite Dealers at AWE.

HIGH QUALITY AUDIO NOW WITHIN REACH FOR MORE PROJECTS

Snap One explains how the continued growth in the home cinema and media room sectors, alongside product design and performance innovations, are creating the right environment for in-room and architectural loudspeakers to feature in a broader range of projects.

The home cinema and media room sectors continue to be a priority category for home technology integrators.

CEDIA’s 2023 Professional Smart Home Market Analysis1 highlighted not just the volume of business currently being carried out in these

areas but also pointed to favourable industrygrowth projections in 2024. The survey valued the industry at £2.9 billion, with home cinema projects representing an estimated £314 million and media rooms accounting for a healthy £234 million of this total value. The analysis points to anticipated growth of 36% in each category for the year ahead.

This is no surprise when you look at figures released in January 2024 by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE)2 on UK home entertainment consumption. The UK Home Entertainment Category is valued at

£4.9bn in 2023, up 10.8% on 2022, with the delivery of content continuing to shift towards video-on-demand (VOD) and electronic-sellthrough (EST), including day/date cinematic releases. In Q3 2023, BASE estimated that 19.3 million UK households had access to a streaming service, with over 56 million subscriptions held in 2023, representing a 5.4% year-on-year rise.

Looked at alongside the CEDIA figures, it’s clear that consumers are keen to invest in their home entertainment systems. The good news is that they can now enjoy a fantastic experience, without having to create as deep a hole in their pocket.

A dedicated, high-quality home cinema with spatial audio – dependent on existing space – is no longer a luxury reserved for the superrich with upwards of six figures to spend. It can now be achieved for a more modest five-figure budget. In properties without a dedicated space, exceptional multi-functional media rooms can also be affordably created with the experience of incredibly life-like and detailed pictures on large screens brought to life by high-performance audio.

EPISODE HOME THEATRE INNOVATION

The way that audio is recorded has advanced, making home cinema and media room entertainment an even more exciting and immersive sound experience. Music, movie and content streaming audio is now being recorded using spatial techniques that deliver a more realistic, 360-degree listening experience for the consumer. This is the closest technology to recreating a live experience that we have ever had and it’s becoming more accessible.

At Snap One, we’ve been working closely with Dolby Atmos for many years, delivering Dolby Atmos cinemas for our Partners to create as full, rich and immersive an experience as possible. Products from our Episode and Triad brands are designed for delivering these fantastic Dolby Atmos experiences.

Our latest Episode Home Theatre offering includes eight in-room and four architectural speakers with home-theatre and home-theatrereference performance classes. This series is designed to support Partners wanting to offer a high-quality audio solution at a more affordable price point. The range features a number of design innovations included within the products to optimise audio performance and ease of installation.

All Episode Home Theatre speakers are built using a rigid MDF construction with an aluminium baffle. This reduces vibration, preventing SPL (sound pressure level) loss and delivering cleaner sound while the removeable enclosure back improves bass extension. Meanwhile, the use of premium components, such as, a strong carbon fibre cone resists deformation, while the rigid die-cast basket reduces mid-bass distortion and increases cooling. Inverted ribbed surrounds increase the effective piston area, allowing stretching and a greater linear cone excursion to minimise sound distortion at higher volumes.

The aluminium dome tweeters in the range are strong, lightweight, and react quickly to changes in music. By chambering the tweeter and pairing it with a copper shorting ring, fundamental resonance and distortion is reduced, enhancing sound quality. Episode Home Theatre speakers also incorporate Linkwitz-Riley filters with Zobel impedance matching to linearise system impedance, improve dynamic range, and promote a better listening experience while allowing the amplifier powering the speaker to work more efficiently.

Other clever design options for Partners include a 2-Way Design with Ambient and Direct Modes for the in-wall speakers in the Reference Series. This enables the speaker to be installed like a traditional direct radiating speaker or as a bipole/dipole in-wall surround speaker. Alternatively, it can also be used as a ceiling-mounted height channel. Using the Sound Field Management switches for

the Aluminium Dome Wide Band Transducers, Partners can also change and enhance the perception of acoustic spaciousness and envelopment to optimise the listening experience for the specific space and speaker layout.

Another useful feature are the integral bass and tweeter Tonal Balance Controls which can be used to enhance the speaker for the installation environment. Meanwhile, Spatial Sound Controls enable selection of either bipole or dipole usage and allow fine tuning of audio dispersion and intensity based on listening position, optimising the audio in any seat.

The Episode Home Theatre series supports the latest immersive surround formats including Dolby Atmos / DTS:X and Auro3D and is ideal for installations where great performance is needed on a more affordable budget.

EXCITING TIMES

These are exciting times in the world of professionally installed audio. Home entertainment continues to thrive as a sector and listening experiences are becoming more immersive, more beautiful and more realistic than ever before. Right now, talking to clients about the possibilities available to them for capturing the best quality and performance in home cinemas or media rooms, is likely to be one of the most rewarding conversations Partners can have.

Existing Snap One partners can learn more and purchase Episode Home Theatre speakers at Welcome to Online Ordering. To apply to be a partner please visit New Partner Application Additional information about Snap One can be found at snapone.com

CRESTRON SPEAKERS: PART OF A SYMPHONY OF AUDIO SOLUTIONS

Speakers created specifically to work in harmony with the other electronics in the system are always going to perform better.

In the ever-expanding world of audio, the seamless integration between your speaker choice and the system itself is crucial. When speakers are designed to work harmoniously with the audio distribution system they are intended for, the result is a symphony of sound that elevates the overall audio experience. That’s why Crestron’s award-winning, marketleading Audio-over-IP solution (DM NAX) was designed with that integration at its heart, creating the perfect combination of speakers and distribution technology.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEAKER-SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY

Speakers are the final link in the audio chain, responsible for delivering sound to our ears. For optimal performance, they must be carefully matched with the audio distribution system they are designed for and perfectly tuned for their environment.

Crestron understands this critical aspect. That’s why our speakers are specifically engineered to seamlessly integrate with DM NAX® technology. It’s a powerful system, capable of everything from distributing perfect audio from any source in any room to simplifying how you tune the speakers. DM NAX® Audio-over-IP is the platform that supports it all. This compatibility enables precise synchronization, efficient power delivery, and enhanced audio quality, resulting in an immersive and enjoyable listening experience — regardless of the source.

CRESTRON’S SPEAKER LINES

Crestron offers several lines of speakers built primarily for residential (and marine) applications, all built to keep up with the higher resolution and increased power that our new amplifiers could support. Two lines are the result of a partnership with Origin Acoustics, and Crestron’s offerings now include in-ceiling, inwall, and landscape speakers. Both lines utilize Origin’s patented “bayonet ring” installation system, streamlining installations. The lines include a baseline collection that provides excellent performance at a competitive price — Crestron’s Reference series — and a premium solution, the Ultimate series.

The audiophile-worthy Ultimate speakers feature ceramic-coated aluminum dome tweeters, which can handle industry-leading wattage — 200 W continuous and 400 W peak — in part due to the carbon fiber material for the woofers with enough strength and flexibility to drive low frequencies well. Be on the lookout for two new additions to our stable of existing speaker solutions, the Saros IC6VLP and Saros IC6ULP. Those last three letters of the model designation stand for “very low profile” and “ultra-low profile,” making them perfect for installation in plenum-restricted environments. All of these speakers can be tuned perfectly via the best-in-class onboard DSPs you’ll find in our amps and preamps.

STREAMING AND BEYOND

Crestron’s DM NAX Audio-over-IP system can deliver streaming audio from services built into our amps and preamps, but now a range of DM NAX “Audio Edge Devices” allow for a world of connectivity from a wide range of sources. From RCA inputs to balanced XLR jacks to USB connectivity, the system can handle everything from legacy devices to high-end components, pro audio, and music right from a laptop. Mix in the new DM-NAX-XSP audio return processor, and you can bridge streaming TVs to Crestron’s DM NAX multi-room audio distribution system.

We’ve also added a new amp to our offerings: The 1RU, half-rack-wide DM-NAX4ZSA-50, a four (plus one) zone amplifier that includes all the features of the eight-zone DM-NAX-8ZSA . It’s our first amp to feature GaN Class D technology. That means more boom in a smaller box: GaN amplification allows higher output power to fit into small form factors without sacrificing efficiency or audio performance. It’s passively cooled, so its fanless operation is perfect for installations where quiet is a must.

Crestron’s commitment to innovation and forward-thinking design ensures that its audio distribution solutions are scalable and futureproof. The DM NAX platform is designed to adapt to evolving technologies and audio standards, providing homeowners with a system that can grow and evolve with their needs.

JBL STAGE XD SERIES

Distributor IMP introduces the mighty JBL Stage XD Series speaker range.

HANGIN’ TOUGH

JBL’s Stage XD Series is a hardy, flexible, eco-friendly loudspeaker range for outdoor and indoor applications. All models in the Stage XD Series deliver exceptional sound quality, offering the smile-inducing audio performance we all expect from JBL loudspeakers. Tough by name – XD stands for extreme durability – and tough by rating; all Stage XD Series models feature IP67-coded weatherproofed, waterproofed enclosures. The result is a speaker line with an indomitable spirit, as happy in the worst of the weather as it is in the comfort of the home.

FIX YOU

When it comes to green credentials, the Stage XD Series ticks all the right boxes, literally in the case of its sustainably designed packaging. And in a world-first for an IP67-rated speaker, users can repair rather than replace, significantly boosting the line’s sustainability score. In the unlikely event that a Stage XD Series model fails, JBL designs the enclosure to come apart and undergo repair, extending the potential life of the speaker.

BLACK OR WHITE

The Stage XD Series comprises two passive loudspeaker models, the XD-6 and the XD5. Both models are available in black or white, include wall mounts, and feature Zero Bezel magnetically attached grilles and a rotatable logo for horizontal and vertical applications. JBL applies a 25 mm aluminium tweeter with an acoustic lens and High-Definition Imaging (HDI) waveguide throughout the range to deliver dynamic, crystal-clear sound over a wide listening area. The 30 cm-tall Stage XD-6 employs a 165 mm polycellulose cone woofer, while the Stage XD-5 stands 25 cm and uses a 130 mm woofer.

INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN

“We’ve brought the high-performance sound of JBL to the great outdoors with resiliency and sustainability in mind,” says Jim Garrett, Senior Director, Product Strategy and Planning, at HARMAN Luxury Audio Group. “The IP67 rating of the Stage XD Series represents one of the highest levels of ingress protection certification. This level of weatherization provides protection against ingress of harmful dust and airborne particles, as well as protection against water and liquids, including immersion in water up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes.”

WEATHER WITH YOU

The JBL Stage XD-6 and XD-5 are available now, whether the weather be fine or whether the weather be not.

LEVERAGING L-ACOUSTICS SOUNDVISION

L-Acoustics Soundvision software helps integrators explain, sell and deliver CEDIA RP22 standard immersive sound to clients.

L-Acoustics unveiled Xi Series coaxial speakers at this year’s ISE tradeshow. The X6i and X8i add further flexibility to the L-Acoustics line up of speakers for the home and yacht markets. Alongside the recently launched in-wall mounting versions of its proven Soka collinear array speaker and SB10r subwoofer and paired with its unique Soundvision 3D Audio design software, the new models bolster L-Acoustics integration offering and underpin the brand’s commitment to CEDIA’s RP22 standard for immersive audio.

RP22 brings together a number of measurable, data-driven parameters to define the performance level of multichannel audio systems. It’s quite a shake-up in an industry that would often measure performance purely subjectively. RP22 is a natural fit for L-Acoustics, which has 40 years of experience in the professional audio industry. With the inception of Soundvision in 2004, L-Acoustics were the first to offer real-time 3D sound modelling software, and ever since, L-Acoustics has always designed audio solutions for venues based on

measurable performance data. Bandwidth, SPL, headroom, response, dispersion, audience coverage and more are all essential elements of any professional audio solution, from the most intimate recording studio to the most cavernous sports stadium.

Recently the L-Acoustics Home & Yacht team were asked by a partner integrator to design a showroom system which would achieve RP22 Level 3: Meets or exceeds reference commercial cinema exhibition standards. To achieve this, the L-Acoustics team chose three Soka inWall colinear loudspeakers in an LCR configuration to be mounted behind an acoustically transparent screen. To increase the frequency response, three SB10r in-wall subwoofers were added while, the new X8i were used for surround channels, along with X6i for the height channels, all mounted behind acoustically transparent fabric. Four Syva Sub are used for low frequency extension down to 20Hz, placed at low level within the front baffle wall. Designing the entire system within Soundvision allowed for accurate prediction of the key RP22 criteria before any construction was begun.

Despite requiring 21 channels of amplification, this 11.1.6 system is driven by one 2U LA7.16i amplified controller, delivering

16 channels of amplification at 1,300 watts per channel, one LA2Xi amplified controller for 4 channels of 360 watts and one further LA4X amplified controller to drive the four Syva Subs with 1000 watts per channel. Everything is connected via the professional Milan-AVB audio over IP protocol via the new LC16D network audio converter which connects to a thirdparty AV processor via AES3 for a fully digital solution. Over 26,000 watts of amplification are available with only 6U of rack space.

FLEXIBLE, NEW XI COAXIAL MODELS

The Xi Series is designed to meet the demands of integration projects requiring powerful, premium sound in a discrete format that can blend into any room. The original X4i, one of the most popular installation loudspeakers from L-Acoustics, comes in at an ultra-compact 100mm per side and integrates discreetly into any architecture while offering premium sound quality, high maximum SPL and a wide dispersion pattern. The X6i and X8i offer larger, more powerful variants in cabinets easily wall mounted at a variety of angles, and shallow enough to use behind acoustically transparent walls.

ESSENTIAL SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT: L-ACOUSTICS 16 SPEAKER SUPPLEMENT 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag essentialinstall.com

A key feature of the Xi Series is its coaxial technology, which allows for a compact design and constant tonal balance over distance. This technology ensures smooth coverage for off-axis audiences thanks to its 90° axisymmetric directivity. These passive loudspeakers boast a 1.5’’ neodymium compression driver coaxially loaded by a 6” or 8’’ low-frequency transducer in a bass reflex cabinet that has an IP55 rating, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor installations.

The X6i delivers full-range sound reproduction down to 54 Hz and produces a maximum SPL of 117 dB, while the X8i reaches 43 Hz, producing a maximum SPL of 123 dB, already far higher than typical residential installation loudspeakers. Using L-Acoustics amplified controllers, different presets tailor each speaker’s response for subwoofer integration. This affords the X6i a maximum SPL of 123 dB and a frequency response down to 69 Hz, while the X8i will achieve a maximum SPL of 129 dB and a frequency response down to 67 Hz.

SOUNDVISION, A POWERFUL RP22 TOOL

More than just an engineering solution, Soundvision software is a unique and powerful tool for integrators looking to achieve RP22 reference standards. It can be a valuable ally in the sales and customer relationship process, providing visual representations of the predicted sound coverage and performance in the room and generating detailed reports, drawings, and documentation of the designed sound system. This allows integrators to present clients with detailed and easy-to-understand visualisations, helping them to comprehend the proposed system design and make informed decisions about their audio specifications and setup early in the process.

Originally developed for professional audio installations, Soundvision is just as applicable to residential systems. Soundvision simulates and analyses the acoustic performance of a given space to reveal an accurate prediction of sound propagation as in-room heat maps. This helps

integrators optimise loudspeaker placement, coverage, and aiming angles to achieve the desired sound quality and distribution throughout the space.

The software calculates coverage maps, sound pressure levels, frequency response curves, and other essential parameters, allowing integrators to make informed decisions about equipment choice and placement. It can be particularly useful in Atmos and other complex speaker array systems, helping to optimise speaker specification and layout for the best immersive audio experience.

2024 is set to be a big year for L-Acoustics Home & Yacht team, now offering a diverse line up of loudspeakers, electronics, and software for the sector. With its Highgate, London showroom and demonstration facility for integrators reopening later this year, L-Acoustics is the ideal brand for installers looking to design and build premium AV projects to RP22 standards.

THE SONOS IN-CEILING SENSATION

The recently announced Sonos 8in in-ceiling speaker delivers bold sound and stunning performance.

Making it’s global debut at ISE 2024, the new 8in In-Ceiling Speaker by Sonos has set a high bar for architectural speakers. Visitors to the Sonos booth could preview this new speaker‘s performance for the first time as part of a specially-designed 7.2.4 surround-sound demo room.

“This addition to our portfolio provides installers with a new size option that sits discreetly within the ceiling and delivers a wide, powerful, and bold sound profile. Performance is further enhanced when Sonos Architectural speakers are paired with the Sonos Amp, ” said Stephen Rhead, Installed Solutions Manager, UK & Ireland, Sonos. “The feedback we received at ISE was really positive, this is a product that installers have been asking for and we’ve listened and delivered.”

The new 8in In-Ceiling Speaker extends the highly successful Sonos Architectural line of passive speakers and has been designed with installers in mind. The design has evolved as a direct response to the needs of Sonos installers who asked for more size options and greater flexibility to suit different installation situations. The new 8” speaker provides installers with a greater scope to choose the design and sound experience to best fit within each space.

Designed and tuned in collaboration with Sonance, the 8in In-Ceiling Speaker features a custom-built, enlarged woofer and highexcursion motor for a smooth midrange, stunning deep bass down to 32Hz, and a greater listening area. A 30mm tweeter and newly optimised waveguide ensures natural sounding vocals and better high-frequency dispersion, for wide, even coverage that fills a room with sound.

EVEN BETTER WITH AMP

When used in combination with Sonos Amp, the Sonos Architectural line provides crisp and clear multiroom audio while also benefiting from overdrive protection and custom tuning enhancements that ensure a balanced frequency response and fuller sound profile. Sonos Amp can efficiently and effectively power up to three pairs of Sonos Architectural speakers per channel (six speakers in total), providing more sound for multiple areas, from a single Amp.

Moreover, installers and clients can benefit from Trueplay tuning, accessed via the Sonos App when paired with Amp. Trueplay measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and automatically

adjusts the EQ for optimal sound. For installers, this saves time when calibrating the system and provides peace of mind when handing control back to the client.

Like all Sonos Architectural speakers, the 8in In-Ceiling Speaker paired with Amp will benefit from the Sonos ecosystem. This includes the easy-to-use app that supports your clients‘ favourite streaming services, Apple AirPlay 2 control, regular software updates and the ability to add additional Sonos speakers and componants over time.

ELEGANT DESIGN

The Sonos 8in In-Ceiling Speaker includes a discreet grille that blends seamlessly with any interior. While bigger in size than the Sonos 6”in In-Ceiling Speaker, the aethestics of the grille are unchanged, ensuring the 8in and 6in speakers can be installed together with the same look and feel.

The 8in In-Ceiling is available in white to match the widest range of ceilings. The grille, which is made of steel, can also be painted to meet the customisation requirements of homes and business environments. The grille fixation is magnetic making it easy to install and remove as required.

The Sonos 8in In-Ceiling Speaker will be available to dealers from Spring 2024. For more information visit Sonos.com

PMC CI SERIES – THE REFERENCE FOR DOLBY ATMOS AT GAT3 STUDIOS

The PMC ci series has become the go-to speaker system worldwide for Dolby Atmos music mixing, a fact reinforced by its installation in another cutting-edge facility, GAT3, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The use of PMC in GAT3’s stunning 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos studio further reinforces the company’s position as the reference for the production of immersive soundtracks, and confirms it as the perfect choice for the playback of Atmos music and movies in people’s homes.

“We decided to upgrade an existing stereo studio to Dolby Atmos because many of our customers were asking for album projects to be mixed in this format and we needed a stateof-the-art facility that would allow us to satisfy these demands,” says Glenn A Tabor III coowner of the GAT3. “The decision to install a PMC speaker system was an easy one to make. I’d heard PMC speakers in many other studios and had always loved them because they are so precise. As an audiophile who has been into HiFi from a very young age, I felt there was only one brand that could deliver the accuracy of a mastering room without sacrificing musicality, and that was PMC. It’s a very fine line to balance, but PMC manages to achieve it perfectly.”

Glenn adds that, “PMC’s team in the USA were enormously helpful when it came to designing the room, choosing the right speakers for the space and matching them to the right amplifiers. The room is by no means small, but space is still at a premium and I wanted to maintain as much of it as possible so that the room didn’t feel claustrophobic. We stripped the room back to its bare bones and with advice from Maurice Patist (president of PMC USA and head of Pro Global) and Dolby, we rebuilt it

to ensure the acoustics were absolutely right for a Dolby Atmos setup.”

Assistance in the design and implementation of the room was also provided by engineer/ producer Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush, Pink, Seal), who is also a part of Gat3’s engineering team, as well as the Gat3 Academic programmes. GAT3’s PMC system comprises Ci140 monitors for the LCR, four Ci140 subs and 12 Ci65 monitors for the surround and height channels – the same speaker models used in PMC’s recent demonstrations at the ISE show – if you heard it you’ll know just how good it sounded.

As ci series speakers are passive, choosing the right amplification was also critical. Glenn opted for three of the new PMC power 7508 eight-channel amplifiers, which combine exceptionally transparent and neutral sound

with a massive power output of 750 watts per channel. GAT3 is now the first studio to install these amps and Glenn says he couldn’t be happier with their performance.

“They are fantastic – we love them” Glenn says. “They are the perfect match for the ci series because they are accurate and also musical. They don’t sound sterile or harsh in any way. I’m also a big fan of the fully featured DSP control, and the fact that it is really quick and easy to adjust EQ for each channel using the System Engineer software.”

The success of the room and the popularity of the PMC speakers has inspired Glenn to look at other studios to see which will be next for a PMC upgrade. Currently he is focusing on the transforming another room into a second Dolby Atmos facility early in 2024.

“We would also love to have PMC speakers in our listening room, which is part of the recording academy,” he says. “By the time we have finished, this will be a serious PMC facility, but it will take a little time to achieve that!”

If your customers are looking for that authentic immersive audio experience, with Atmos soundtracks reproduced the same as they sounded to the director and mix engineers, then the ci series and dedicated PMC power amps are the perfect choice.

HIDDEN TALENT

The Redline White Glove installation service delivers peace of mind. We have the UK’s most experienced invisible install team, delivering the very best performance and product invisibility to all our projects. .

Hidden speaker system sales are growing exponentially. Customers and the design community increasingly expect their interiors to remain visually untouched, so the aesthetic ambition for each space can be realised. Systems that leave modern interiors with their clean lines intact, or that do not impact on the classic lines of a period or listed property (Grade I and II) are in strong demand. Customers also do not wish to compromise on the quality of the delivered audio. The hidden speaker market has risen to the challenge with brands such Amina, JBL, Nakymatone, Sonance and Stealth offering products that combine these crucial abilities.

The delivery of discreet bass to support invisible speaker systems has also evolved rapidly. Redline offers numerous custom plasterin grilles for in-wall subwoofers and in addition, our unique custom speaker cloth printing service, allows seamless colour blending with the design environment.

A unique performance characteristic of invisible speakers relates to their full-band dispersion capabilities. This means large spaces can be filled with fewer speakers than would be needed if using conventional ‘on show’ products. This not only delivers great value for the customer, but a far superior room filling experience.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

The opportunity in this sector should be an obvious one for installers. However, with the complex nature of whole-home or home media room projects, companies do not always have the confidence or the time to devote to the installations of these systems. This is where our White Glove installation service comes in.

With over 20 years’ experience in this sector, we can design, deliver and install every aspect of any hidden speaker system, allowing installers to contrate on other aspects of the project safe in the knowledge that the very best results will be achieved. Confidence in our service also means installers can be more ambitious in their offering of hidden speaker systems. We have taken on and successfully completed every type of project from the very largest contemporary spaces to complex heritage projects that require a lot of care and knowledge.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

As part of project execution, experts are often drafted in to add their specialist knowledge. Our White Glove service falls firmly into this category offering genuine expertise in an area that many installers find challenging in terms of reliable execution, or the time needed to keep up with the rest of the project’s delivery.

There is much to consider when installing invisible speakers.

You cannot simply rock up, cut some holes and hope for the best.

Attention to detail during the install is critical as is asking the right questions before starting the install.

From the obvious ‘thickness of plasterboard’ to the less obvious choice of numerous ceiling finishes ranging from standard multi-finish plaster to specialist finishes like Microcement and Venetian Stucco, the information that you need to gather before starting a job is considerable.

You also need to spend time understanding the lighting, acoustics, fire-rating, soundproofing and client performance expectation aspects of a project, and only then are you on the road to understanding the whole job in hand.

With over two decades of experience executing these projects, we have built an intimate knowledge of all the possible scenarios that these schemes can deliver and can plan for them right from the start ensuring the best end result each time.

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE

We have seen demand for the White Glove service increase as installers are asked to deal with an increasingly wide variety of installation projects in the commercial and domestic sector.

As the design community’s knowledge of hidden and invisible audio systems has grown, projects increasingly call for knowledge of how to work with a wide variety of materials. We can deliver projects working with a vast array of materials including wood veneers, laminates, slates, tiles, fabric, leather and fibreglass. If there is a material we have not worked with before, we are more than happy to test out the viability of its use and build a bespoke way of delivering it. This deep knowledge also allows us to deliver audio systems in some of the most challenging spaces such as swimming pools, bathrooms and saunas.

With our experience and the technology at our disposal, we can specify rooms perfectly using speaker heat maps to ensure the right number of speakers are specified and their optimum placement is achieved.

Using our experience, there really are very few places these systems cannot go. Get in contact with us as soon as you know there might be potential or a desire for hidden/invisible audio in a project and we can help design, plan and execute.
