We are delighted to welcome back the smart building awards for 2018 following a highly successful 2017. This year each winning entry will receive coverage across print (essential install magazine) and digital platforms (ce pro europe newsletter and website) as well as dedicated smart building awards newsletter e-shots in the run-up to and after the awards presentation. The winners will receive their trophy at a gala dinner between the two show days at ei live! on the 9th & 10th may. The winners of course will also receive even more coverage in our review within the may issue of essential install magazine, underlining the excellence achieved in their chosen field. The reach offered by this beefed up cross-platform marketing campaign will deliver all who enter an industry-wide showcase for the very best each company can offer whether they are a manufacturer, distributor, training provider or installer. The aim is to deliver the most representative, inclusive and up to date awards initiative in the av/ install world and create a recognised brand and seal of industry approval for years to come. The awards are judged by an independent panel of judges.

Loudspeaker of the year

Criteria: Awarded to the screen shown to have provided the most innovation and commercial opportunities to installers.

Criteria: Providing an easy to install, high performance and expandable system will be key in this category.

What the judges are looking for: The Judges will be looking specifically for improvements to viewing performance as well as ease of installation/flexibility.

What the judges are looking for: The judges will look at audio performance, scalability, ease of installation and the level of future proofing.

Criteria: Awarded to the speaker which has demonstrated the best performance qualities, whilst offering a compelling and easy to install proposition for installer and customer alike.

Projector of the year

Dedicated touchscreen of the year

Criteria: Awarded to the project deemed to have pushed the boundaries of performance whilst offering ease of installation.

Criteria: The category will go to the product deemed to have provided the most exciting and unique user experiences, whilst delivering an easy to integrate system for the installer.

What the judges are looking for: The judges will look for improvements in picture, an installer-friendly approach to set up, calibration and installation.

Bracket/rack or mounting product of the year Criteria: Awarded to the product deemed to have provided the most creative and user-friendly design to not just support a product, but enhance the experience. What the judges are looking for: Judges will look for pure innovation and out of the box thinking where a supporting product takes the performance of its partner to a new level.

What the judges are looking for: The Judges will look for unique features, aesthetics and installer-friendly features.

Tv/display of the year (conventional) Criteria: Awarded to the best conventional TV product providing opportunities the smart building/custom install channel. What the judges are looking for: The Judges will be looking for specific performance characteristics, functions of installation abilities which make the product a strong proposition for installers.

Integrated tv/display of the year

What the judges are looking for: Judges will be on the lookout for specific movement forward in the delivery of audio into the home in a fully integrated fashion, but whilst maintaining performance, or a product that delivers performance and a style statement in one package.

Cable solution of the year Criteria: Awarded to the cable product judged to have improved the quality and reach of signal delivery to the highest degree. What the judges are looking for: The Judges will look for evidence of outstanding performance in terms of reach, manipulation, and ease of install.

Matrix/signal distribution product of the year Criteria: The product judged to have delivered the most user/installer friendly route to solving the issue of multiple signal delivery, will win out here. What the judges are looking for: This category will be judged on which matrix delivers the widest possible features set for the best value, ease of set up will also be key.

Criteria: Awarded to the best-integrated product defined as a set which integrates fully into the fabric of the home using bespoke frames, mirrors or similar. What the judges are looking for: The Judges will look for products which offer the most fully integrated products with offer installation flexibility as well as the aesthetic integration customers want.

Best cinema project

Sales person of the year

Criteria: Award to the distributor judged to have offered the best support to installers.

Criteria: Awarded to the cinema which shows, the most design flair, high performance whilst overcoming tricky project or technical challenges.

What the judges are looking for: Nominated by their own company or a third party, this salesperson will not only have posted impressive numbers in the last year, but demonstrated a high level of ability in establishing the client’s needs and delivering above expectation.

What the judges are looking for: Judges will look for additions to product line up, improvements to field support, technical inquiries, logistics, training and any other forms of support innovation.

Manufacturer of the year Criteria: Awarded to the company judged to have delivered the best in line-up additions and support to installers. What the judges are looking for: Judges will look for product introductions, training support, and marketing innovation.

Training initiative of the year Criteria: Best Smart Building training course is awarded to the course deemed to have provided the most skills installers can take into the field or apply to their business to see instant improvements. What the judges are looking for: The Judges will look for how the course delivers specific improvements to attendees’ knowledge and how these can be applied in the field.

What the judges are looking for: The Judges will look for installation know-how and adaptability to deliver something beyond the client’s expectations.

Best commercial integration project Criteria: Awarded to the product which delivers the highest customer satisfaction and technical innovation.

Special recognition award What the judges are looking for: The person deemed to have delivered an outstanding level of contribution to the industry. This award is decided by All Things Media, Editor in Chief, Daniel J Sait.

What the judges are looking for: The Judges will search for a project which meets precisely its brief and then goes beyond to add a faultless end result.

Best whole house project Criteria: Awarded to the project which deliver on all levels offering the customer a truly integrated solution which is not an add-on, but genuinely is part of the home’s utilities. What the judges are looking for: Judges will be looking for forward thinking, innovation and delivering real character into a project.

Multi-dwelling unit (mdu) project of the year Criteria: Awarded to the project which demonstrates the most innovation, professional finish, attention to detail and skilled planning to bring the project in on time and to budget.

One of the most experienced writers in the sector, Jason is vice president of consumer electronics and security at EH Publishing, overseeing trade publications and websites for technology titles CE Pro, Commercial Integrator, Security Sales & Integration, Campus Safety Magazine, and TechDecisionsMedia. Ce Pro US editor for a total of 17 years, Jason’s knowledge of the building and home automation market is extensive and a hugely valuable asset to this year’s panel.

Daniel is the founding editor of the UK’s trade bible for the smart building market, Essential Install (EI) and also editor in chief and co-founder of All Things Media, owner of EI and the smart building awards. Daniel has been promoting the advantages and achievements of the smart building sector for over a decade through the pages of EI and prior to that in various trade editor roles in the AV sector. The deadline for entries to the Smart Building Awards is Friday March 16. EI Live! will take place May 9 – 10 Sandown Park, Surrey.

Create something that encompassed Stuarts passion of technology was key in his decision to start his new company. So in 2007, Stuart started the company now known as Just Add Popcorn. At first they secured a contract for our local Sony Centres and dealt with all their TV’s being WallMounted, which naturally evolved to customers wanting more technology and more complex installations. Now in 2018, the company goes from strength-to-strength, covering initial wiring of smart home infrastructure to high-end design and creation of home cinemas. Stuart’s also a Cedia Volunteer, Trainer and sits on one of the Global Industry Committees.

Anna Gamble is managing director at Customised, a residential install company based in East Anglia. Whilst overseeing the day to day operations of this growing and innovative company, Anna’s main focus is on marketing, business strategy and development. Anna spent over a decade working in agriculture and the food supply chain, taking new products to market, developing business growth strategies and diversifications.

Melanie Malcolm has been a key member of Bespoke Home Cinemas for the last fifteen years’ working closely with husband Gifford and the team growing the Bespoke brand across the UK. Recently Melanie sat as CEDIA Board Director which gave great experience and knowledge to support the industry. Still an active volunteer for CEDIA, Melanie is currently leading the Apprenticeship group developing the Smart Home Technician standard. With two other companies, Yorkshire Ladies Links, a conference & events company which supports individuals and businesses to grow their network and also Director of The Yorkshire Choice Awards that recognises inspirational people, businesses and charities at an annual award ceremony.

Owen Maddock started the successful install company ConnectedWorks with the belief that technology in homes should be simple, beautiful – even invisible. Intuitive so you forget it’s there, yet capable of creating unforgettable experiences to share with friends and family. ConnectedWorks is now one of Bristol’s leading home technology specialists, particularly well known for Wi-Fi networking, lighting control and home cinema. Owen is an active volunteer member of CEDIA, the global smart home trade body, heading the working group writing a new CPD course about home cinema and media rooms. An Oxford MA, Owen also carries the CEDIA Certifications Designer, Networking Specialist and Technical Specialist. Owen regularly delivers smart home training to architects and interior designers, and has presented at the RIBA Roadshow for the last two years.

One of the most experienced executives working the automation and AV sector, Vin is currently responsible for global business development at AV and connectivity maker VCOM. Vin is also former CEO of global smart home trade body CEDIA, overseeing a period of highly successful consolidation and increased marketing activity producing nearly 300 collateral pieces, videos, blog posts plus consistent social media efforts which resulted in more than $2 million in earned media relations in a year. Vin has also served on the Consumer Electronics Association’s TechHome Division Board and was director of marketing for seven years at automation specials Crestron Electronics.
