POWERBREAKER – STILL THE FOREFRONT OF RCD TECHNOLOGY Further amendments to the safety standards BS7288-2016 are due later this year, and GreenBrook Electrical is the first to ensure their products adhere to the latest regulations.

PowerBreaker RCDs are ideal for use in workshops or industrial premises for additional safety measures

T

o explain in simple terms, the new standard requires Type A RCDs and Type AC RCDs. Type A RCDs can detect pulsating DC currents and surge faults that Type AC RCDs may not detect.

Pulsating DC currents are created from faults in modern electronic equipment such as EV car chargers, solar panels, multi-media equipment, USB sockets, iPhone chargers, Sonos, and Alexa. This new standard – due to go live at the end of November this year

– requires much more rigorous testing of the RCDs with high voltage and short circuit tests. Products that adhere to this standard have a more sensitive/ stable trip window, so are a much safer defence against electrocution. GreenBrook is part of the BEAMA Technical Committee, which helped to write the revised standard. GreenBrook has also noticed an upturn in its Powerbreaker RCD business with the changes to the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, increasing the use of RCDs in all public areas. With this amendment, together with the increased safety requirements discussed in the recent government Hackitt Report, there is more call for using RCDs to detect and isolate products at the point of use to help prevent electrical fires, as well as helping to protect the main circuit and the consumer unit (point of supply). Socket RCDs are a perfect opportunity for wholesalers to make an additional sale, whilst ensuring that their customers adhere to the latest safety regulations.

Passive and Active RCD designs PowerBreaker socket RCDs are available in both 30mA and 10mA trip currents, in a selection of Passive and Active designs. Many people are unaware of the differences between Passive or Active products, and do not understand where best to use what. So here is an easy way to understand it... For Passive RCDs, a typical application would be a refrigerator or freezer that would return to their regular mode of operation as soon as the power supply resumes normal operation. Passive RCDs are also useful to use for sockets in hard to reach places, where having to gain access to reset an RCD would be tricky, but where protection is still required. An active RCD is better used for electrical equipment, such as hedge

trimmers or power tools, where unexpected restarting of the equipment could present a danger to the user in a power-cut situation. You will also see that PowerBreaker offers both a 30mA RCD as standard, plus a 10mA option. PowerBreaker 10mA RCDs are the latest products to hit the market and are the super sensitive products. These RCDs trip earlier, as they are more sensitive to a fault current flowing, breaking the circuit before the trip occurs further upstream and takes out the nuisance to the consumer of the RCD tripping – often then cutting out other faultless items. These RCDs have been deemed safer for use in areas with young children, such as nurseries and schools, but also for use in places with more vulnerable

GreenBrook’s RCDs have been deemed safer for use in areas with young children, such as nurseries and schools

PowerBreaker is also suitable for use in places with vulnerable people – such as hospitals or old people’s homes – where a chance of electric shock could be fatal

“GreenBrook has noticed an upturn in its Powerbreaker RCD business with the changes to the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, increasing the use of RCDs in all public areas.”

people – like hospitals or old people’s homes, where a chance of electric shock could be fatal. All public access areas would be advised to use 10mA, as all types of people can pass through these areas. So we see that the degree of risk depends not only on current and time; but if the victim is a child or a person in poor health, the effects can be more serious, so the need for RCD protection is even greater. PowerBreaker socket RCDs also offer MFBL (make first break last) technology, which is critical to avoid upstream RCD nuisance tripping at the consumer unit. There are many other PowerBreaker products available. We offer a selection of spurs, in-line RCDs and weatherproof RCDs. Please visit our website or powerbreaker.co.uk for further details. Power outlets which complement their surroundings are a key trend in the hospitality industry

FIND THE RIGHT FIT Every project has its own needs and challenges, and often it is the contractor’s responsibility to select the right wiring devices for the building application. Here, Emma Segelov, EMEA Marketing Operations Manager at MK Electric, looks at three key solutions which tick the right boxes for end-user and contractor.

W

hether it’s public sector or private, large or small scale, one of the most important considerations for the functionality of a building is the specification of appropriate wiring devices. This decision regularly falls to the contractor, and whilst each project will have its own unique elements, it is well worth having a number of reliable products in mind to suit various environments, for ease and speed of selection.

8 | June 2019

MK Electric.indd 8

Hospitality When selecting wiring devices for hospitality premises, reliability and safety need to go hand in hand with sophisticated design. In fact, hotel booking site Trivago last year reported that power outlets that complement their surroundings were a key trend for the industry. That said, the world of interior design is fast moving, and hoteliers are constantly under pressure to update their premises to meet the expectations of trend-conscious guests.

Wiring devices that offer two-part installation – a functional module and a clip-on frontplate – can be an ideal solution. Once the functional module is installed, the frontplate can be replaced as many times as necessary, giving the surrounding environment an affordable style update in a matter of minutes. These devices also offer multiple benefits to the contractor. As the frontplate is separate to the functional module, it need not be fitted until the very end of the build. This protects it from damage, such as paint splatter or

“Lower budgets shouldn’t mean lower quality, especially when it comes to crucial items such as wiring devices.”

scuffing, which could occur whilst works are still ongoing. Additionally, opting for a manufacturer which can supply these parts individually, with separate part numbers, means the frontplate needn’t be ordered until it is required, removing the potential for part loss on site, and catering to any last-minute design changes. Some two-part solutions can pose an issue in terms of usability, as a module without a coverplate will not meet British Standards as a fully usable device. With this in mind, contractors should check that the two-part device they choose is supplied with a recyclable coverplate, to ensure the outlet can be safely utilised throughout the build without the final frontplate. Additionally, two-part products which include backed out and captive screws, and in-line and upward facing funnel entrance to terminals, can help to save time when working to a tight schedule.

MK Essentials offers a broad range of white switches and sockets suitable for smaller budgets, without compromising on customer expectations

Educational facilities In light of the mounting financial pressures on UK schools – with some even turning to local fundraising to cope – it is vital that any product specified is built to last. This means it’s future-proofed to meet the needs of students both today and tomorrow. One key example of this is USB integrated sockets. Earlier this year, the Government issued its Education Technology Strategy, which aims to utilise technology to make learning more accessible whilst cutting costs and reducing the burden on teachers. In order to achieve this, a huge shift in infrastructure is required, and one of the most obvious elements to this is the provision of charging capabilities. With this in mind, wiring device ranges which offer USB integrated charging are a good choice for educational builds. Take care, though, as not all USB chargers are equal. For example, it’s important to ensure that the selected devices include Dynamic Device Recognition (DDR). This feature is designed to detect nuances in charging configurations from a range of manufacturers and react accordingly. This is a key feature, as different devices charge in distinct ways: for example, a USB charger which works for an iPhone may not effectively charge

an iPad. DDR ensures that each device recognises the USB socket outlet as it would its own charger, and therefore draws current to the level for which it is designed. In a busy school, college or university, where time and efficiency are of the essence, this ensures optimal and efficient charging, saving valuable time and resources.

Smaller budgets

The Matt Black finish from the MK Dimensions range is on trend and creates a striking statement

Lower budgets shouldn’t mean lower quality, especially when it comes to crucial items such as wiring devices. It might not be immediately obvious which options can actually offer the quality and reliability required for a fit and forget solution. Choosing a value range from a wellrespected manufacturer is one way to meet a lower budget, without worrying about the quality of a product. By choosing an established brand, contractors can benefit from the reassurance of proven engineering expertise, along with robust

product guarantees, comprehensive customer service and breadth of range, regardless of whether it’s a value or premium range. For example, MK Electric has this year launched ‘MK Essentials’, a new range set to make its products more widely accessible. Designed to offer reliability, ease of fit and quality, MK Essentials offers a broad range of white switches and sockets suitable for smaller budgets, without compromising on customer expectations. Including quality USB outlets, LED dimming, and Euro modules, the MK Essentials range is also expandable, as Grid frontplates from the range are compatible with MK Electric’s Grid Plus range of modules. With a 25-year guarantee, MK Essentials provides contractors with a budget-friendly, reliable solution, no matter what the project. As well as meeting budgets, a value range should also help the contractor to meet build schedules and customer expectations. Look for ranges, such as MK Essentials, which include features such as backed out and captive screws for an easy and convenient fit, and aesthetic benefits such as a screwless design and high gloss finish. Although no two projects are alike, it is helpful to have a number of ‘go-to’ ranges in mind to speed up the selection process when considering wiring devices for a job. Given the importance of reputation when it comes to securing work, it is crucial that contractors source products from a quality manufacturer which they can trust to supply a range of reliable products. KNIGHTSBRIDGE

A SOLUTION, NOT JUST A NECESSITY Last year, Knightsbridge celebrated 20 years of service within the lighting and wiring accessory market. Since its inception as a supplier primarily of metal clad switches and sockets, the company has never stopped evolving its ever-expanding range of wiring solutions.

H

ere at Knightsbridge, we see wiring accessories as solutions, not just necessities. The switches and sockets on display around your home, at your workplace or around your children’s school are not a random assortment of products. They’re a unit; a fully-fledged wiring system. They are there to provide you power when you need it, enhance your lifestyle and complement your home décor. Switches and sockets should be developed to match the tech-driven lifestyles of modern users, and the rise of USB ports is a precedent to this. To provide some context, USB was introduced in 1996 to standardise the connection of keyboards, mice, printers

12 | June 2019

ML Accessories.indd 12

and other large hardware generally surrounding the chunky PCs of the time. Nowadays, according to Ofcom research, desktop PC ownership is down and stands at just 28%, whilst smartphone ownership stands at 78%. This summarises the swift change in preference to smaller, more portable devices over the last decade. Despite all of these changes in technology, and the decreasing ownership of the desktop PC, the demand for USB charging solutions has never been higher, due to the volume of smaller, portable devices integrated into so many people’s way of life. Consumers are spending an average of 24 hours a week online – twice as long as 10 years ago. Simply put, this means that more charging is required on more devices.

Pick a solution with quality components If you are tasked with equipping a home, commercial space or any environment with a contemporary wiring solution, it’s important to choose switches and sockets that are compliant with modern standards: • Quality controllers: IC controllers and USB controllers should be from reliable sources to ensure longevity in their usage. The last thing you want is USB sockets failing one month after commissioning. • ErP ready: ErP stands for Energy Related Products. This Europe-wide directive aims to improve the efficiency of products and systems installed in

Wiring Accessories

24/05/2019 11:53

KNIGHTSBRIDGE properties throughout the UK. In the case of sockets, it is a function to save power when your device is in standby mode. This regulation is to ensure that the total power of the device, when not in use, won’t exceed 0.5W. • EMC certified: Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of equipment or systems to function satisfactorily in their electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbance to anything in that environment. EMC testing is a series of tests to ensure the product’s electromagnetic compatibility. EMC compliance is a mandatory requirement in the UK market. • British Standards: BS 1363-2 recently got an upgrade to BS 13632:2016+A1:2018, so it is important to take this into account when purchasing these solutions. In our case, we make sure our switches and sockets now test to EN 62368-1, which merges EN 60065 (the electrical safety standard for audio, video and similar equipment) with EN 60950-1 (the standard for electrical equipment for information processing, office machinery and telecom equipment). In addition to bringing the scope of two previous standards under the same umbrella, EN 62368-1 represents a significant departure from what a standard normally looks like. Instead of being based on descriptions of requirements, the standard focuses on the risks that may occur. We also now test to EN 62680-11, which relates specifically to the USB charging function. • RED: Where a Bluetooth function has been implemented into a product, it is important to ensure RED Compliance. RED is the Radio Equipment Directive, formerly known as the RTTE Directive.

USB Innovations So what products can help consumers get more out of their switches and sockets? Using some of our own products as examples, here is a taste of what is available.

The Quad USB Outlet is a 1G socket that allows users to charge up to four devices at the same time. This outlet has a huge total charging power of 5V DC 5.1A, with the right-most port able to deliver a dedicated 2.1A of charging power for larger devices, such as tablets and laptops. This solution is perfect for tech-driven homeowners, hotel rooms and public charging points. We have also recently introduced FastCharge sockets into the Screwless range. These sockets, available in matt white, brushed chrome or matt black, are compatible with QC2.0 enabled smartphones and can offer charging up to three times faster than conventional 5V DC 1A chargers. During FastCharge mode, the USB socket will switch from standard 5V through to 9V, and even 12V, giving up to an 18-20W charge rate. This means compatible smartphones will see 50% of their battery charged in just 30 minutes. Devices that do not have QC2.0 functionality (such as iPhones) will still receive a charge rate of up to 5V DC 3A, depending on the make of device. The FastCharge capability makes these sockets perfect for cafes, motorway services and airports, where timepoor consumers are seeking a quick, convenient place to charge their devices.

Future-proof solutions Another thing to consider when buying sockets with USB ports is the type of USB ports available on the market. A new feature we have introduced within our own FastCharge range is the option to choose between a Type-A or a Type-C USB port.

More and more devices are emerging on the market with Type-C USB ports, so the demand for this smaller port is increasing. This makes a socket with a Type-C port a good long-term investment for any home or public space.

“The demand for USB charging solutions has never been higher, due to the volume of smaller, portable devices integrated into so many people’s way of life.”

The perfect fit It’s not just about the technology, it’s also about where the product can be installed. According to research by Britannia, we spend on average six hours a week cooking, which is why it makes sense to utilise sockets that can be installed under kitchen cabinets. The same goes for desktop sockets, which can be either recessed within worktops or surface mounted within corners, thanks to specially-angled designs.

One-stop-shop Whatever project you may be working on, be it a new office space in Central London or a small rural homestead, we have been evolving our wiring solutions for over 20 years to accommodate a huge range of needs. Let us help you get the most out of the switches and sockets used on a daily basis and provide you with a contemporary wiring solution for your next project. Get in touch with us today to find out more. Knightsbridge, mlaccessories.co.uk

•T ype-A USB ports are the standard flat, rectangular interface that you find on one end of nearly every USB cable. These are the most common and widely recognised ports. •T ype-C is an emerging standard that has a lot of promise – it’s smaller, reversible, and provides and receives more power.

SCOLMORE

A LA MODE WIRING ACCESSORIES FROM SCOLMORE Scolmore’s Click Mode range of stylish, contemporary, white wiring accessories remains the company’s best-selling wiring accessories collection to date.

T

he Mode range was conceived and developed as a high quality, flexible and modern solution for virtually any domestic wiring requirement. The smooth, contemporary lines of the Mode accessory plate will fit easily into traditional and contemporary designs alike. The modular design of Mode allows installers unprecedented flexibility in creating dedicated wiring solutions to deal specifically with actual wiring needs. Scolmore has continued to invest in this range since it was originally launched, introducing products in visually contrasting versions to meet with Part M regulations. In 2016, the company added the awardwinning Mode locating plug socket to the range. It was designed to assist people with impaired vision or poor hand-to-eye coordination to more easily insert a plug

into a socket. The contoured shape of the front plate guides the earth pin into position. Other innovations for the range include the addition of USB sockets – now available in one- and two-gang, and single and twin USB options. In 2018, a 3-pin safety shutter socket, which exceeds the required safety standards, was launched. It features a safety shutter that cannot be operated using only one terminal – it requires correct insertion of all three pins of a standard UK plug. All of Scolmore’s white moulded and Mode Part M wiring accessories are manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. All products independently tested achieved a 99.99% kill off rate across all four types of bacteria strains – MRSA, E. coli, salmonella and klebsiella pneumoniae.

The Mode range has been specified and installed across a huge range of applications, including schools, hospitals, care homes, hotels, offices and leisure complexes. The Mode accessories are covered by a ‘no quibble guarantee’ against any fault in materials or manufacture experienced at any time within 20 years of the date of supply. Scolmore, scolmore.com

HAGER

ASK THE EXPERT: RUGGED PROTECTION FOR WIRING ACCESSORIES With lighting and other gardening accessories requiring safe and robust power solutions, Jane Yorke, Product Manager at Hager, outlines some of the most common questions regarding a safe protection solution for wiring accessories – the Sollysta IP66 range. What are the benefits of Hager’s Sollysta IP66? Manufactured from a tough, durable thermoplastic, the Sollysta IP66 range is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, where wiring accessories may be vulnerable to dust and water. In addition, the IP66 features a unique dual action hinge so the lid can be opened to 180 degrees for easy plug insertion and switch operation. It is also suitable for moulded on plugs, thanks to the extended enclosure and extra wide gel seal. In addition to ease of operation, other installation benefits include 20mm cable knockouts which can be easily removed by pushing out from the inside of the back box, while a drain feature can be drilled out using a 5mm drill. Finally, the factory fitted soft gel seal fits snugly around power cables to

maintain the IP66 rating while in use with the lid fully closed.

What does the range include? Delivering rugged good looks, the Sollysta IP66 range includes a number of tough and high-quality socket outlet options all of which are from the Sollysta white moulded range. The range also features 10A and 20A switches, a bell push switch and a fused connection unit to provide a wide range of solutions, even in the toughest of environments.

The importance of safe installation Of course, safe use of any electrical item needs to be a top priority, so that users have total peace of mind at all times. Sollysta IP66 is a range ideal for indoor and outdoor applications where

wiring accessories may be vulnerable to potentially harmful effects of dust or water ingress, or even high-pressure water jets. In addition, the Sollysta IP66 features safe locking functionality so that padlocks with up to a 5mm diameter shank can be fitted to prevent unauthorised use.

What about conforming to current British Standards? The Sollysta IP66 rating conforms to BS EN 60529: 1992, with all functional products fully tested and certified to appropriate British Standards and independently tested. The highest quality manufacturing materials ensure long-lasting performance, designed to withstand the elements. Hager, hager.co.uk/product-catalogue/ wiring-accessories/sollysta/ip66/38664.htm

Surge

Protection With the 18th Edition of the wiring regulations in place, a number of key amendments that affect both electrical designers and installers have taken effect. Surge Protection is an area covered that has inherited a new set of test standards that installers need to consider during risk assessment. In many cases, surge protection devices may be required for both commercial and residential installations and SPDs used must meet the safety requirements in order to protect against overvoltages. We offer a range of SPDs as well as 18th Edition compliant boards with surge protection included. Check out our 18th Edition Hub on our website for more information on our 18th Edition solutions. hager.co.uk/18thedition
