Editorial: Abscission

T

hrough abscission is understood the process of shedding various parts of an organism, such as a plant dropping a leaf, fruit, flower, or seed. The term comes from Latin, where ab means “away”, and scindere, which means “to cut”.

Currently, the world’s future is quite uncertain for many people, but one thing is quite clear: pretty much everything is changing. Now, we are seeing all tides change: from cars and money to aesthetics and politics. It is hard to be in a state of abscission, especially if you can’t figure out what is the direction in which things are going. Some people are already giving contour to the world, but it is still a big unknown for most. There was a question roaming around, a thought that seemed in many ways a teenage pondering, but which is very relevant today. It went something like “does the caterpillar know it will turn into a butterfly?” It is definitely interesting to imagine what it must be like for a transforming butterfly not to know what is happening to him, but, more or less fortunately, we are now experiencing it on our own skins. And that is very likely an experience we will never forget.

NEWS FROM A SERVER IN GENEVA:

WATCHES & WONDERS 2021

A

Text: Attire Club

fter going digital in 2020, the Watches and Wonders show (previously known as Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie or SIHH), decided to keep it digital for 2021 as well – as least as far as their Geneva event was concerned. Thus, this time around W&W took

place digitally between 7-13 April and was followed by a live event in Shanghai. The Geneva show was originally announced to be fully digital, so it was not a major surprise that it took place that way. HourUniverse, the new Basel show, was also supposed to take place around those dates (8-12 April), but the organizers decided to cancel that event and maybe move it to a later date in the year. During the digital Geneva show, many new watches were unveiled, and many watch enthusiasts were excited to be able to see them online. However, the full experience of the show was definitely absent. While the organizers did do their best to replace a physical experience with a digital one, in many cases, this simply cannot be (yet) done. The issue is that it is simply something too different to make it work in another way. The move from a physical event to a web-based experience is too great a gap. It is somewhat like saying that your favorite film is now a side dish, which you can experience at McDonald’s. It simply doesn’t work. However, out of this entire debacle, there were still a few good things that rose to the surface. The coolest one was the shows which W&W offered on their YT channel. With a friendly and professional host (Belle Donati), the morning episodes and panel discussions were fresh and cool and really did bring the event closer and tied the whole experience together. Such shows and a stronger online presence of the watch community is something we would definitely like to see more of. HourUniverse also promised to deliver a great online experience, but, so far, it has not really launched any viable platform in that sense. Moreover, a digital event gives people the chance to interact with each other and connect faster. The issue with it, besides the fact that it cannot replace the physical experience, is that a lot of trolls can join the discussion and, secondly, that the watch community will become smaller and more exclusive. It sounds counter-intuitive, as a digital show is supposed to bring in more people, but the people who have access to actually see and touch the watches and to engage with key people in the industry diminishes by a lot if the entire activity is moved online and if there are no common, semipublic places where people can meet. A huge part of watch events is, for everyone, meeting other people – at the booths, at parties and talks and even at a bar, a couple of hours after the official event has closed down. Now, with a digital show, all those avenues of

22 | InCompanytAttirehClub

connecting have closed. It’s hard to tell if and, if yes, how watch fairs will return to a physical form. However, what is quite clear is that online shows may be an excellent complementary idea, but they are not a replacement of a physical show in any way. How many people took days off work to watch the latest releases from various watch brands? How many people had a group chat of their own regarding the watches? These questions may be relevant to the watch community, but to the watchmakers, the only real relevant questions are those regarding money: did they lose money or not? How will this shift impact their revenues in the long term? 38 watch brands showcased their newest releases during the digital Watches & Wonders event, but, moving forward, it is very likely that Geneva will become the hotspot for watch fairs, so more brands will likely attend the next editions of the show. It may become more exclusive, but that also means that the standards will be higher. Let’s be optimistic.

SPRING CLEANING: HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HAIR? ...AND OTHER QUESTIONS ANSWERED

T

here are many simple questions regarding clothes, fashion and style that are pretty common among every group of people: men, women, younger, older, from

the West, from the East… These are usually practical questions that concern the “how often” category of style and clothes. Most of these clothes are questions regarding styling habits and washing clothing. We have put together a list of some of the most common “how often” questions and gave answers that will guide you the next time you will have any of these dilemmas:

How often should you wash your hair? This is a frequent question we get, but there really is no exact answer. However, there are a few guidelines we can give you: If you use hair styling products every day, you should wash your hair every day. Most hairstylists don’t recommend washing your hair every day, but you will damage your hair more if you go to sleep with product in it, compared to washing it every day. If you use gel, spray, wax or anything else every day, you should also use shampoo and other products to strengthen your hair. If you don’t use hair styling products, you can get away with washing your hair less frequent (every three days, for example – some even say once a week). It should not be too rare though – a week seems a bit too much. Let’s say that if you don’t use hair styling products at all or not very often and don’t invest a lot of time in maintaining and styling your hair, you should probably wash your hair every other day or every second day. This depends on the type of hair you have too. Some people have hair that gets naturally greasy fast, which means that they should wash it more often than people who have hair that looks and feels OK for longer periods of time. Furthermore, note that bald people must wash their heads as well, even if they currently don’t have any hair.

How often should you wash jeans? It is known as common knowledge that one shouldn’t wash their jeans too often. However, there are many people who take this idea and run wild with it. This is how some people get to wear jeans that have not been washed for over 6 month or so. The truth is that, even though it is true that you shouldn’t wash

24 | InCompanytAttirehClub

your jeans too often, you should wash them at least once a month or once every three weeks. Also, remember that it is always best to wash jeans in cold water. Cold water helps retain the dyes in the fabric for a longer time, and you will be able to have fresh-looking denim longer.

How often should you exfoliate your skin? Exfoliating your skin is essential if you wish to have a healthy and good-looking look. However, doing it too often can damage your skin, as it will not have time to regenerate after you have removed your bad cells. This is why it is best to exfoliate your skin not more than twice a week. As a note, remember that, even if you don’t have to exfoliate your skin every day, you must wash it every day and maybe use a moisturizing cream.

How often should sweaters be washed? Sweaters are also clothing items that don’t need to be washed too often. However, the frequency of the wash depends on how you wear your sweater. If you wear your sweater on your skin or just with a tank top underneath, you should wash it after one wear. Otherwise, you can wash it only after two or even five wears, but not more than that.

How many times can you wear a pair of underwear until you need to wash them? Once.

How often should you cut your hair? It really depends on each individual how often you wash your hair, but it is indicated to have it trimmed or adjusted at least once every four weeks, regardless of its style and length.

How often should you trim your beard? Unlike the hair on your head, your beard grows faster, so it is important to have it trimmed at least once a week. If your beard grows very fast, you should trim it more often. Even if your beard takes some time to grow, you should still adjust it at least once every three weeks or so.

And there you have it, some of your most burning universal, practical and quick questions answered. If you follow these rules, you will be able to look and feel better and have clothes in shape for a longer time.

HOW TO MAKE ORDER IN YOUR WARDROBE Text: Attire Club

Every once in a while, every man should make some order in his wardrobe. There is not much of a point in owning many things if they are not easily accessible or ready to be worn when you need them. A well-organized closet is a time-saver, a money saver and a great way to maximize your sartorial purchases. De-cluttering your wardrobe might be hard, which is why we have come up with five simple steps that will help you make order in your wardrobe. Read on for tips on how to make the best of your clothes when you do not have them on…

5. Repair or throw out bad items If an item is broken in any way, from hanging strings to holes in shoe soles, you should either fix it or throw it out. If you can’t get yourself to fix it rapidly, are you sure you will be repairing it later?

Additional information The clothes you no longer need should necessarily go in the dumpster. Many towns have charities or clothes-dumping boxes on the streets that allow you to drop your clothes. This way, someone who needs clothes but cannot afford to buy any can enjoy them. You can also sell them at a second hand shop, but you will probably not make much of them. If you have some very high-end designer pieces you no longer wear, you might be able to sell them to specialized stores, but don’t expect to get more than 50% of what you initially paid for them, even if you wore them only once. Alternatively, if you have clothes with holes in them or that are too bad to be donated, you can turn them into rags or use them to make beddings for your pet. Keeping your wardrobe organized will make you more focused, and this will reflect in your attitude and in your way of doing other things as well. Now that you have these tips, you can make the best of your clothes, and you will be able to scan your closet rapidly and see if there is a department you need to complete, and you
