23-25 March 2012. Have you ever tried to keep your Austin 7 on the straight and narrow while being buffeted by gale force winds in freezing cold conditions? This is exactly how we started our long week-end on Friday 23 March 2012 when twenty-two members and friends headed for Goulburn. Nine A7’s and a couple of moderns left home for what became a very hair raising experience trying to keep their little

babies on the road. Everyone had a story to tell upon their arrival. After checking-in to our accommodation we braved the cold weather (complete with our jackets, beanies, scarves and gloves) and set off for a short jaunt to Goulburn’s historic brewery. Brewing is a truly wonderful skill as old as civilisation itself. Only the Bradley Grange Brewery at Goulburn survives from all those established in Australia prior to 1840. This brewery is part of an integrated set of buildings housing various activities associated Continued on page 6

Presidents Report In my last Report I indicated the Committee would consider requirements to legally implement rules for the conduct of Club activities. Accordingly, the Committee has decided that an amendment to our Constitution is necessary to allow for Rules to be set down from time to time without continual amendments to the Constitution. This seems to be a practice of many other Motor Clubs. Included with this month’s Baby Torque magazine is a Notice of Special General Meeting together with the proposed amendments to the Constitution and a Proxy Form to use if needed. This Special General Meeting is scheduled to follow the 9 May 2012 General meeting at the NRMA Training Rooms, North Strathfield. Once the amendment to the Constitution is passed and subsequently approved by the NSW Fair Trading the Committee may then implement appropriate Rules in relation to club activities as and when necessary. Information regarding some proposed Club Rules will be included. Please consider these matters carefully. I hope to see you at this Special General Meeting. Happy Sevening … Warren Gracie

Herbie … a small part of motoring history but a big part of my life.

Robert Yarroll

Robert Yarroll (our editor and webmaster) has compiled a 140 page coffee table book titled “Herbie … a small part of motoring history but a big part of my life”. It’s dedicated to a group of Club members who helped him change his little Austin 7 from a tired old car to a gleaming little gem. There’s lots of photographs inside covering many recent Club events. So why not check-out the book to see whether it includes you or your car? Simply follow the above link to see the book, or if you want, you can buy your very own copy to keep!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Anthony Gore ….….... Queenscliff Kevin Shields ………. Coleambally Events Report Everyone had a fabulous weekend at Goulburn. Three A7’s departed from Liverpool Museum (Eric & Cissy, Warren and Merv & Maureen). Mark joined in his A7 for coffee at Picton. Everything was going great until the wind picked-up and the guys were fighting it from then on; and everyone was glad to reach Goulburn where others were waiting to explore the countryside with us. We were very late in arriving due to the wind. We decided to visit the Brewery instead of a longer run due to the breezy conditions. We were pleasantly surprised with the evening meals at the Steakhouse; a new chef has been appointed and … WOW … the meals are really good. The weather was much better on Saturday although still very cool. Our run to Crookwell was a delight and those who attended the Restoration Day came out saying they really enjoyed it and learned a lot; although it was nothing like what they had expected. Most of the ladies walked down to Crookwell shops and back, checked out the town and then went to the sock factory, had a demonstration of the workshop and of course bought lots of socks in a variety of colours. Our BBQ lunch was delicious and we finished the day with a trip to an

orchard where we spent up yet again. Sunday saw the Austin 7’s going in different directions. Some had not visited Riversdale before and others went back for a second time, and other went to the Goulburn Show before heading home. I suggested a trip to Picton on the way home for a pie from a café highly recommended by radio’s Alan Jones; but it wasn’t open on Sunday! Over the weekend we had nine A7’s and two modern taking part in the run. Attending were Robert & Faye Yarroll, Mark & Joanne Wellington, Warren Tite, Cliff Stockley, Helen Lewis, Carolyn Thompson, Eric Steinhaus & Cissy, Ken Rolley, George & Sue McGill with their friends Ken & Annie, Bruce & Carol Hale, Warren Gracie, Jim & Merilyn Dunn, Mervyn & Maureen Boatwright; a grand total of twenty-two people. Those who travelled from Liverpool and back covered about 275 miles over the weekend. Our next outing is a Breakfast Run to Mona Vale by the waters edge, so if you will be joining us please contact me ASAP as I need to book. See you on the Breakfast Run! Happy Austin 7 touring … Maureen Boatwright

with brewing such as malting, milling, coopering, smithing and stabling; and some other activities unrelated to brewing too. This evening members gathered at the Lilac City Motor Inn’s Steakhouse Restaurant for a generous threecourse dinner and an opportunity to sit back and relax after an eventful day. The main event of our long weekend was Saturdays leisurely drive to Crookwell; a lovely country town sitting on the very top of the magnificent Great Dividing Range. Just five minutes before we reached Crookwell everyone got a great view of local wind farms that take advantage of the areas breezy conditions; it’s just perfect for generating electricity using wind turbines. One farm, the Crookwell Wind Farm, consists of eight wind turbines and when built in 1998 was the first grid-connected wind farm in Australia. From here we soon arrived at Sydney Vintage Car Restorations for a full day of restoration talk, workshop touring, tools and techniques demonstrations and then even more car talk! Gee whiz … and they reckon the ladies can talk … but today it was the men’s turn and their voices were in over-drive most of the day. A special thank you must go to Gill & Sara Skidmore, the owners of Sydney Vintage Car Restorations; and Rebecca, Shannon and Tim for their wonderful hospitality and tasty BBQ lunch, and for allowing us to see how they accomplish their high quality restorations. Page 6

This was certainly a very interesting and fun day for all of us. While Gill was amusing the men the ladies went down town to the Lindner Sock Factory. This fourthgeneration family owned and operated business produces on-site a variety of premium sock styles. A tour of the intricate machines in action proved very interesting. The ladies visited a local Orchid after lunch to purchase some fresh local produce. Our busy and enjoyable day concluded with another dinner at the Steakhouse Restaurant … where there was even more discussion about what had been talked about during the day. Sunday saw another early start and some members visited the Riversdale Homestead; a historic 1830’s Inn purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. Some other members visited the 2012 Goulburn Agricultural Show. There was something for everyone at the show and many town folk enjoyed a spectrum of entertainment including industrial displays, livestock, horses and equestrian, wood chopping, a rodeo and lots more. Club member Sue McGill was spotted at the show where she and her pony regularly competed when she was a young girl. Eric Steinhaus and Cissy were also caught enjoying the Reptile and Snakes display while Faye and Robert Yarroll enjoyed the rodeo, wood-chopping and (of course) patting all the animals! Everyone seemed to have a most enjoyable weekend; and after lunch it was time to call it a day and head for home.

4 March 2012. Todays new southern venue was the AustiBeach Café Restaurant Gelateria at Austinmer in the beautiful Illawarra area. This café is a place where the customer is always welcomed and made to feel at home. The food was great and the view overlooking Austinmer Beach was just perfect. The morning started off overcast but the sun was soon shining for our scenic drive from Heathcote to Austinmer. Warren Gracie and Ken Rolley drove their moderns, Ron Selig & Robert Yarroll were in Ron’s classic Holden HZ Premier; and Mervyn & Maureen Boatwright and Mark & Joanne Wellington drove their A7’s. A short time after we arrived at the café we were joined by Eric Steinhaus & Cissy in their A7. It definitely seems that some of our Austin 7 Club members could be a bit slow to learn; because once again the Big Breakfast was a popular menu choice and again it was found to be almost impossible to fully consume. Our breakfast was served with generous helpings of friendly conversation and laughter. So after such a wet week it was very easy to enjoy the new venue and the beautiful weather. Thank you Maureen for once again finding an excellent venue.

Car of the Month ... Mark and Joanne’s 1929 Tourer You may have seen the movie Driving Miss Daisy … well Mark and Joanne Wellington have their own story to tell about driving Miss Hollie. Mark and Joanne set out to find a car after joining our Club about five years ago. In June 2007 a tired little 1929 Austin 7 Tourer was advertised for sale in Melbourne. Mark decided this was the perfect car for him, so he borrowed a tow truck and drove from Sydney to Melbourne overnight. In the morning he took Miss Hollie for a very short test-drive and then loaded her onto the truck and drove straight back to Sydney. Mark and Joanne are the fourth custodians of Miss Hollie, and the previous owner had kept her on blocks for forty years. She was in a very sad condition when Mark first inspected her. Her engine did start, but then blew some smoke and coughed and spluttered; and after just one circuit around a quiet cul-de-sac the little Austin packed it all in and simply died. Poor Miss Hollie didn’t even have enough spark or petrol to make it onto the truck for her homeward journey. But of course this was just the beginning of the fun! Mark now had a new

Miss Hollie … a stunning 1929 Austin 7 Tourer Page 8

and rather big project to keep him busy for the next fourteen months or so. Miss Hollie needed a total ground-up restoration and the only things not replaced were the upholstery and the tyres. Every other component, every nut and bolt and the chassis was either repaired, replaced or restored in some way. By 2008 Mark and JoJoanne and Mark anne had finished a remarkable restoration of Miss Hollie who was now looking amazing. The car was freshly painted in Kingfisher blue with black mudguards; and the engine had now quit smoking. Marks restoration has given a once very old and tired little car a completely new life ... and now she’s as pretty as a picture. Soon after Miss Hollie was back on the road and touring again. Mark and Joanne took her to the 2008 All British Day at the Kings School, North Parramatta. It was here that Mark was interviewed by Fletch, the presenter of TV’s Classic Resto’s, about the restoration of his beautiful 1929 Austin 7. This interview has been screened many times since then on national TV. Mark went on to become our Club President between 2009 and 2010; and finished his term of office with a fantastic Presidents Weekend Away in the NSW Southern Highlands. And what a weekend it was … undoubtedly the years highlight for many members who attended with their Baby Austins. We asked Mark what was he looking forward to next? “Well, I’m looking forward to the 2012 Austin Seven Hub Rally in Tanunda South Australia”, he said, “and I think I’ll drive Miss Hollie … it’s only about thirteen hundred kilometres each way!” Now that’s dedication … and some would say it’s touring at its best! Long live Miss Hollie. And I hope we’ll see everyone in Tanunda SA.

companion, and it surely must have been, for a few minutes later I hit a protruding rock, being unable to see it through the snowwreathed wind-screen, and it speedily became obvious that the bump had affected the steering. Matters were so bad that we were obliged to come to a standstill, but just as we were wondering what on earth we were to do another Good Samaritan came along in the shape of a cowboy in an old Ford. He stopped, got out, and came up to us. I told him not to bother (all the time hoping, and indeed, feeling sure that he would!). “I can’t leave you here in this storm,” said the gallant fellow; and after a little argument we gratefully accepted his aid. Forthwith he packed us both into his own car and drove us to the next garage, seventeen miles farther on, from which, later on, when the storm was over, we returned to the Austin with the garage man, who put the steering right and enabled us to resume our journey.

When I first subsided wearily into the cowboy’s car I felt something hard on the seat, and looking down to see what I was sitting on it was a large revolver! He told me that I, too, ought to carry a gun in these parts since there were some lawless characters about. An adventure we had a little later on in New Mexico made me see the wisdom of his advice. THE HOLD UP One day a pair of particularly villainous-looking fellows halted us and demanded money, threatening unpleasant things if we didn’t cash up. I put them down as brigands at the time, but fancy they were actually “bootleggers.” I told them I was due at the next town for passport formalities, and that if I didn’t turn up there would be immediate inquiries which would make matters hot for them. While they were considering the matter I slipped in the clutch and dashed off. I half expected them to fire after the car, but they didn’t, and we got clear. All the same, after that I bought a small Colt automatic, which in future I carried loaded on the ledge in the dashboard of the car. We got through to Arizona

without any further real trouble, and in doing so ran from cold and snow into a most perfect climate in spite of the month being December. I reflected pleasantly on the change as I sat on the balcony of my motel at Needles writing up my diary. It was a wonderful night, warm enough to sit out in pyjamas and a coolie coat. Down the main street rows of pepper trees, great palms, and flamboyant flower-covered shrubs bore witness to the sub-tropical climate, and handsome Indians strolling about gave the place a fascinating atmosphere all its own. Hitherto I had been disappointed with the American Indians I had seen, but these were charming – tall and slim, with regular features and beautiful white teeth. There were about six hundred of them in the little city, and they proved very friendly. In fact, they could not have been more interested in my trip if I had been an Indian woman doing a round-theworld trip in an Indian car! We were not on the edge of the famous Mojave Desert, and set off early one morning carrying four gallons of water, fruit, a tin of biscuits, and the invaluable Thermos flask, like-

wise full of water. For the first few miles the road was quite ordinary. Then came the desert – limitless stretches of sand and rocks, a few coyotes, a weird bird or two, and all over the glorious Californian sunshine and a cloudless blue sky. After eighty miles or so we reached Amboy, a small Indian settlement, where an old red man told me that all their water had to be hauled from Newbury Springs, sixty-two miles away, and cost thirty-five cents a barrel! Recently, he said, no rain had fallen for over a year, and a temperature of 120° was not uncommon. I was fascinated by the desert, but it was evidently possesses drawbacks for those who live in it! Its sunshine is soft, golden, invigorating; its scenery marvellous, and, in addition, it has an atmosphere of adventure, optimism and modernity that is all its own. There are orange painted inns set down in the most isolated spots of desert country, with signboards bearing such legends as: “Come Right In and Let’s Get Acquainted,” or “Oh Boy! Hot Dog – Let’s Stop!” and so on.
