the Victoria & Albert Guesthouse as it appeared in the early 1920’s
23-24 June 2012. There’s nothing like a winter weekend away in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Twenty-one of our hardy members enjoyed the brisk fresh air (literally freezing), iced-over Baby Austins and relaxing drinks by a warm log fire when we visited the Victoria & Albert Guesthouse at Mount Victoria this weekend. Some members set off early Friday morning for a cold and rainy trip up the mountain. An early dinner that evening followed by a chat near the log fire helped to thaw everyone out. Naturally, there were many stories about the cold to tell other members the next morning.
On Saturday morning the sun was shining but the temperature was still about zero degrees. Many members met at the guesthouse at 11:00am today and then eight Austin 7’s and a few moderns departed for a run to Lithgow. Our first stop was the Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum. The factory commenced in 1909 and a new factory named the Small Arms Factory (SAF) was opened in 1912. The first 40 short-magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III rifles were completed by May 1913. Following the outbreak of WWI in 1914 production rose to 1,600 rifles each week. Today, continued on Page 6

Presidents Report All financial Club members will receive a copy of our new Members Mate booklet with this Baby Torque magazine. This booklet includes the Clubs Constitution, the new Club Rules, a listing of all Club members and their contact details plus Conditional Registration procedures. This is the first time our Club has compiled such a comprehensive document for members. I would like every member to peruse this booklet and familiarise themselves with its contents.
Hopefully this guide to our Club’s procedures will assist those members who have been unsure in the past of what to do or how to proceed. It is proposed that this comprehensive Members Mate booklet will be updated annually and then distributed to all financial members. I hope that this booklet will allow all members to be fully aware of our Club’s requirements and procedures. Happy Sevening … Warren Gracie
In memory of
Brian Bloser Age 73 years Members of the Austin 7 Club NSW Inc extend their condolences to Jenny and her family on the recent passing of Brian. I was saddened to learn of Brian’s sudden passing in late May this year. Brian and Jenny joined the Austin 7 Club NSW Inc in the early years. They lived at Cartwright in Sydney and assisted our Club whenever they could. Jenny purchased and sometimes made Club shirts for members then embroidered them. If anything needed to be transported to and from meetings or outings Brian and Jenny were there to help. When they retired to Vincentia on the South Coast they continued to do whatever they could to help our Club. Members once spent a week away travelling throughout the South Coast region and we will always remember the magnificent feast that was waiting for us at Brian and Jenny’s beautiful home at Jervis Bay. In my mind Brian will always be a somewhat eccentric person; he loved tinkering with his Austin 7 in his huge garage and he dreamed that he would one day see his car on the road. He was always eager to give advice wherever he could and he loved to sit and chat for hours. Brian will be sadly missed by his many friends in the Austin 7 Club. Maureen Boatwright Page 3
Events Report Our Breakfast Run to a new venue at Camden Valley Inn turned out to be a good gathering of members; and we were joined by three visitors on the day. The food and service was extremely good and everyone loved the scenic drive through the surrounding areas and we finished up at the Wallacia Hotel for refreshments before heading home in the early afternoon. I would say from what I heard from members and also my own impression of the June Weekend Away at Mount Victoria … a great time was had by all. Saturday saw our group go to Lithgow for about five hours where we all enjoyed ourselves. We then returned to a warm log fire for a relaxing chat before dinner. Some folk returned back to the open fire before retiring for the evening. Some members have already asked me when can we go back to the guesthouse for another weekend away! Sunday saw an array of cars parked for the lunchtime buffet and then a visit to the movies. Stuart Sheldon from the Vauxhall Owners Club organised a great day of fun and laughter. I’ll see you at the Don Avery Memorial Shield Run in July. Don’t forget to advise me if you will be attending. Happy Austin 7 touring … Maureen Boatwright

the factory manufactures the Austeyr F88 weapon and has about 140 employees. A huge and very interesting range of rifles, machine guns, pistols and even some household appliances were on display. After all this excitement we visited the Lithgow Workers Club for lunch. We then went to historic Eskbank House & Museum. This beautiful house was built in 1842 by a local stonemason for Thomas Brown (a Scotsman and the first industrialist in the Lithgow Valley) and his wife. We then drove to the ruins of the old Lithgow Blast Furnace which closed in the 1930’s. As the afternoon drew to a close we headed back to the Guesthouse for our dinner and a few more drinks by the warm log fire. Sunday morning saw the temperature drop to freezing again and
the little Austins were all iced over. It was very very cold. But we all rugged-up, lined up our cars in formation and then waited for members of the Vauxhall Owners Club and their friends to arrive. About fifty cars arrived at about 11:00am and after suitably arranging the cars for Display we all moved into the Guesthouse for a tasty lunch. Afterwards it was time for a movie at the Mount Vic Flicks. Our entertainment was the Aussie film Kitty and the Bagman. It featured some of the cars that were on Display today … and everyone had a fun time. A big thank you must go to Stewart Sheldon and Maureen Boatwright for arranging this weekend. At about 4:00pm it was time for everyone to pack-up and return home after yet another great run touring in our baby Austins.

To Austin 7 Club members, This is a photo of the Sponsors Choice award I won for my Austin 7 at our local Motofest Display in June. There was about one hundred and fifty cars and bikes on display. I’m so happy that an Austin 7 can still bring home the bacon … yeah!

Ted Johnson Remembers … by Denis & Helen Quartly Ted Johnson is a close friend and neighbour of ours and can still remember when he owned a baby Austin 7. This photo was taken at Plumpton in 1947 and rekindles many fond memories for Ted. Everyone knows how good the brakes can be on an Austin 7; and Ted recalls driving to the local picture show with a friend and commenting if they had to stop quickly the friend should pull on the hand brake while he would manage the foot brake … so the story goes. Ted also remembers coming out of another picture theatre one day to find that some clever young chaps had lifted his little Austin 7 onto bricks so he wouldn’t be able to drive off. Ted, always being one step ahead, noticed what had happened. So as quick as a flash he gave the car a good shove and then hopped in, started it up and drove off ... much to the amazement of the chaps who had put the car on the bricks and who were now wondering …. how did he do that? These are just a few memories from a wonderful friend and neighbour. Page 7
Car of the Month ... Cliff & Jeanette’s 1935 A7 Tourer This month we feature Cliff and Jeanette Edwards 1935 Austin 7 Tourer named Aussie. The Edwards have been Club members for about ten years and inside their garage you’ll also find a cute little blue Morris named Morrie. Cliff and Jeanette regularly attend our Club events (and the occasional rally) and are also members of the Austin Motor Vehicle Club. Cliff’s dad had an Austin Seven in his younger days and used it as the family car. Cliff and dad both shared a love and passion for the baby Austin and in 2000 bought a very tired and neglected 1935 Austin 7 Tourer from John Webster. John had the little car sitting in his garage for seven years but never found the time to commence its restoration; so he finally decided to sell the car and let someone else have all the fun. So Aussie became Cliff’s new total ground-up restoration project. But where does one begin … well Cliff and dad started by dissembling the car one piece at a time.
Aussie … a 1935 Austin 7 Tourer Page 8
Cliff and Jeanette Unfortunately dad passed away not long after the project started and never got to see the finished product. But … Cliff did eventually complete the car and it now looks amazing. Little Aussie was rewarded recently when Club members voted him as our 2011 Club Car of the Year. Cliff and Jeanette are now seasoned Austin Seven tourers having travelled to Austin’s Over Australia at Ballarat and also to the Canberra, Warwick and Forbes rallies. They even attended the Echuca Steam Festival with Melbourne’s Austin 7 Club. Little Aussie has now clocked up quite a few miles travelling throughout much of eastern Australia. Cliff and Jeanette have many happy memories of meeting new friends over the years … all thanks to Aussie. Their next big trip will probably be to Bendigo next year for Austins Over Australia. But between now and then there should be a few shorter trips too! We all wish Cliff, Jeanette and Aussie many more happy years touring around Australia together.
Information Sheet If you would like to see your Austin 7 featured in this magazine please complete and return the “Car of the Month - Information Sheet” available from the Editor. Page 9
Round the World in a “Baby” Car by Gladys de Haviland Part 6
I would willingly have spent a longer time in this wonderful Dominion, but once more a voyage lay before me – this time across the Tasman Sea to Sydney’s marvellous harbour, whence the “Baby” was to carry me to Melbourne and Adelaide.
I flew over Sydney Harbour in an aeroplane, and had the pleasure of meeting those famous Australian airmen, Mr. KingsfordSmith and Mr. Ulm, and also their great motordriver, Mr. “Wizard” Smith, who gave me some good advice. “If you meet a snake in Australia,” he told me, “don’t run over it. They are liable to be caught up in the wheels and perhaps jerked into the car.” I was to remember this a little later on.
tralian, sitting at my table, told me he had just motored over the desert, but: “Never again!” quoth he. “I shall ship the car back.” Then he went on to speak of aborigines, snakes, “old man” kangaroos, and emus, telling me I should probably meet the lot! Aborigines in the north, he said, had recently captured a white woman who had been shipwrecked, had made her the wife of the chief, and were feeding her on big white grubs!
I took a great fancy to Sydney. It is such a friendly, gay sort of city, and the Australian women seem to me to be not only extraordinarily good-looking but very sporting and full of the “joy of life.” Anyway, I had a simply lovely time there being entertained to lunch by the Royal Automobile Club, and having tea with the Civic Commissioners at the Town Hall, where Mr. John Garlicks conversation specially interested me.
The journey from Sydney to Melbourne was accomplished without any particular incident, the road being by no means a bad one as roads go in Australia. All the way along people were most kind to me, and I made a detour en route to visit the new Federal Capital of Canberra. Melbourne I found a very beautiful city, with wide, well-planned streets, and it was certainly not behind other places in hospitality!
I suspected a “leg-pull” and was not unduly alarmed, but when I was actually on the desert, and the wind and sun made me feel sleepy and tired, I had only to contemplate being made an aboriginal chief’s wife and dining on white grubs, to make myself “step on the gas” and do a forty-odd miles an hour over tracks that the average English motorist would not believe a car could negotiate at all.
“Tell people in England to come out to Australia,” he said. “After all, if you’re hard up, isn’t it better to be hard up in a warm country than a cold one?”
Adventure began when, having left Melbourne behind me, I was lunching on the edge of the Coorong desert at a little town called Robe. An Aus-

Apart from the various unpleasantnesses it holds for the motorist, the Coorong, like the Californian desert, is weirdly beautiful. Wild flowers of magnificent colouring abound after rain, and at certain seasons bird life is plentiful. All the same, I was glad to reach Adelaide. Here I enjoyed a further round of festivities, and then the time came for me to leave Australia. Colombo was my next port of call, and I spent several very pleasant days in Ceylon before proceeding to Calcutta for my dash across India to Bombay. This proved to be by no means the least interesting portion of my long
For one thing, the mosquitoes drove me nearly frantic. Their everlasting hum got on my nerves, and their bites covered my arms and neck, causing me to think ruefully of a certain green georgette frock I had bought for evening wear in Bombay. The frock, I knew, would look very nice, but what my own appearance would be by the time the insects had completed their fell work I shuddered to think. I did what I could with a mosquito spiral and a spray, but most of the time saw me huddled up in my Burberry, with a car cushion for a pillow, praying for the morning.
bungalows, an opinion that was confirmed when I had to stay in another at Kudra. Here there were not only more mosquitoes, but a small animal the size of a rat was running about the room all night. It was probably only a mongoose, but I wasn’t sure, and once again sought the protection of my Burberry. I don’t know why it is, but I always feel braver in this garment, perhaps because it gives me a more “mannish” appearance! On both those never-to-be -forgotten nights, by the way, I dined luxuriously on bully beef, soda water, and biscuits – hardly the kind of meal, somehow, to generate courage! From Baraker to Kudra was a lovely run along a first class road, with a thrilling period when I passed through the Chorporan Jungle. I had been told in Calcutta that I will see lots of game, including tiger, bear and sambhur, and the khansama at the Kudra bungalow informed me that there were “too many tigers about; they come out nights and take pigs.”

I decided then and there that I had no use for dak Page 11

Albert has been renamed the ERG Special and can be seen on his own website at www.wegspecial.webs.com. It was good to hear from you Wally, and we’re all so glad at the Austin 7 Club that you got such a quick response.
