Many baby Austin enthusiasts look forward to their pilgrimage every five years to the National Austin 7 Hub Rally. This major event attracts admirers from all around Australia and overseas who thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to be among the vast array of little cars and to have a friendly chat with their custodians. This year has seen worldwide celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the first Austin 7’s being produced at the Longbridge factory. Production commenced in 1922 and continued until 1939.
This Baby Torque magazine is dedicated to those hard working people who made the 90th Anniversary National Austin 7 Hub Rally a reality and to all those enthusiasts who attended what some say was “the best A7 Rally ever!

Presidents Report The big event this month was the National Austin 7 Hub Rally held in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. And what a great event this was especially as it coincided with the 2012 Bay to Birdwood Run. We give thanks and congratulations to the Austin 7 Club SA and their officials for all the time and effort that went into organising this event. Our club was well represented by a variety of sevens all which performed well. Three of our cars were awarded Best in Class; Mark Wellington’s Chummy, Brian Haywood’s RP Box Saloon and Warren Tite for the Racing Class. Having recovered from the trip I now look forward to the 2017 National Rally to be held in Queensland. Happy Sevening … Warren Gracie

Events Report So ... I guess we’re all back from our adventures in South Australia. I’m looking forward to hearing members travel stories and their experiences in getting there and back home again. Mervyn and I spent almost four weeks on the road travelling. After the rally we attended the Vintage Collingrove Speed Hillclimb where at least ten NSW members thoroughly enjoyed the day’s activities while Paul Boatwright, Ken Rolley and Warren Tite competed for their first time and did very well. After this Paul Pui, Mervyn and I travelled to Kangaroo Island for four days then continued to places including Hahndorf and the Clare Valley; and then Broken Hill for another four days where we joined the Yarroll’s. We had an unusual experience there venturing down the Day Dream Silver Mine … and that was a very long 60 minutes underground for someone who suffers from a certain phobia! The Rally itself? Well what a great experience with so many wonderful places to visit, great food, fantastic organisation, unforgettable scenery and of course meeting up with so many friends we have made over many years of rallying in our Austin 7’s. There’s only another four events and our Austin 7’s will have finished their running until next year. I hope to see many ladies at our Ladies Day. It’s hard to believe this will be our third year of this special day. We celebrate Ladies Day to thank the ladies in our Club for their support over the year. We appreciate the help they give with supplying supper, selling raffle tickets, giving out door prize tickets, assisting with food preparation on runs and weekends away … and much, much more. We are going to have lots of fun on Ladies Day; so please contact me ASAP if you will be attending as bookings are essential. I am also deeply shocked that Robert Yarroll has announced that he will be standing down as our Editor in December. Robert has always given 110% to our Club and with recent proposed changes being raised has decided not to stand as Editor at our next AGM. … Maureen Boatwright

And what a great way for us to celebrate 90 Years of the Austin Seven!
30 September 2012. It was an early start today for many of our members who made their way from Tanunda to Glenelg for the 2012 Bay to Birdwood Run. Although some stayed overnight at Glenelg most had to leave Tanunda at around 5:45am for their one hundred and twenty mile drive. This was just a short jaunt considering everyone had already clocked up around 1,500 kilometres on their way to Adelaide. Cars of all shapes and sizes started arriving from 6:00am at West Beach’s Barrett Reserve. The Austin 7 was a featured car in today’s huge event with about one hundred and fifty little Austin’s in attendance. Page 6
The first cars were flagged off after the Mayor cut the official ribbon at 8:30am but it was another hour before our baby Austin’s departed for Birdwood. Thousands of enthusiastic spectators lined the road for our journey from Glenelg to Birdwood. There was plenty of wide smiles and lots of waving and tooting. No matter how young or not-so-young they were … from babies and children through to more mature folk … everyone was having a ball watching the passing parade. The party was in full swing by the time we arrived at Birdwood; with over thirteen hundred vintage and classic cars, trucks and bikes on display; and the opportunity to watch the judging of the Concours d’Elegance. There was plenty of entertainment, food stalls and amuse-
ment rides for the kids; and of course the day would not have been complete without a visit to the famous Birdwood Motor Museum. This display is definitely something not to be missed by any car enthusiast visiting Adelaide. It was a genuine hardluck story for Graham and Joanne Gullick who couldn’t make the starting-line as their Austin 7 broke its crank shaft. However, the Yarroll’s little Herbie was back on the road again and seen scooting along very well indeed. Many members will have stories to tell on their return home of their 2012 Bay to Birdwood adventures … and I am sure Faye will have some photographs to share online with everyone. So for those who want to see the sites of the Barossa area again, and some pictures of cars and more cars, then check-out our Events Gallery on our Clubs website (see back page for details).

It’s been a long time coming … ninety years in fact … but we’ve finally celebrated another major milestone in the long history of our beloved Austin Seven. The 90th Anniversary National Austin 7 Hub Rally at Tanunda in South Australia has attracted more members from our Club than any other National Rally. Members from our Club and other A7 clubs were spread around Tanunda’s motels and caravan parks and it was a real treat to see so many Sevens driving around town. There was spontaneous sightings of baby Austins everywhere with friendly smiles and waves coming quick and fast from thoroughly delighted locals and visitors alike. Day 1: Monday 1 October 2012 - One hundred and seventy four entrants from around Australia were welcomed to the Rally and given their Rally Packs by our host The Austin 7 Club SA. There was time this afternoon to tour through some nearby townships to familiarise ourselves with the local area and enjoy some sight-seeing. That evening the Rally got into full swing with a grand Welcome Dinner at the Rally HQ in the Tanunda Showground. A most enjoyable evening was had by everyone! Day 2: Tuesday 2 October 2012 - The morning started with a drivers briefing at Rally HQ before we departed for Mannum on the Murray River. Today was one of the highlights of the week and the scenery was simply superb! We travelled through Angaston, Keyneton and then down-hill to Sedan and then onto Cambrai and eventually into Mannum. The local Lions Club provided a hearty lunch at Mary Ann Reserve where we sat on the edge of the mighty Murray River and watched houseboats passing-by. We displayed our cars at the park … and with the sun shining through a cloudless sky it made our little babies sparkle. We returned to Tanunda afterwards where some members joined a Noggin and Natter at the Barossa Junction Hotel. Day 3: Wednesday 3 October 2012 - Entrants were split into two groups today; one for the morning tour and the other for the afternoon tour. Today we visited the Jacobs Creek Visitor Centre to learn about Jacobs Creek wines. We then travelled to the Maggie Beer Farm Shop where we tasted and purchased some of Maggies’ famous products and checked-out her pheasant farm. Then we went to Seppeltsfield, the home of Seppelts famous Para Port and other liquid delicacies. Lunch was a tasty BBQ back at Rally HQ. That afternoon Mr Carl Lindner opened his private Jaguar Car Collection to us. This was a rare and unique opportunity for us to view his wonderful and varied assortment of Jaguars; and a big thank you goes to Carl for his generous and friendly hospitality. A film of the 1950’s Redex Trial was featured at Rally HQ tonight with even more food and Page 8
drink to enjoy. Day 4: Thursday 4 October 2012 - After our morning drivers briefing a representative from Seppelts Wines and a cooper (barrel maker) presented a specially inscribed wooden barrel (together with ten litres of Seppelts Port) to competition winner Mrs Gail Sheldon to help celebrate the 90 th Anniversary of the Austin 7. Congratulations to Gail; and I am sure this helped to make (her husband) Stuart’s birthday celebrations the following day just that little extra special. It’s a unique barrel and the perfect memento of this great Rally that will be treasured for many years. After these festivities we headed for the Kapunda Trotting track. This is where today’s fun really began with a State versus State Funkhana. Mark & Joanne Wellington and Robert & Faye Yarroll were chosen to represent our Club today as no volunteers were forthcoming. So what were their tasks? How about the navigator directing (but without touching) a blindfolded driver around witches hats while also instructing the driver when to drop a tennis ball into buckets at various places? Impossible you say … well almost! And … how about driving their Austin 7’s (without stopping) in an anti -clockwise direction around a car tyre while the driver throws six rolled-up newspapers over the roof of his car and into the middle of the tyre. These were just two of six tasks that were all great fun … and the crowd in the stand did a wonderful job barracking for their state team. After lunch it was time to visit the many interesting places along the Kapunda Heritage trail before returning to Tanunda for dinner. Day 5: Friday 5 October 2012 - On our last day we visited the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus and their very interesting Agricultural Museum. Our group-photo was taken on the Roseworthy Oval. A tour of the Vet Science Campus was also arranged and this allowed us to see their state-of-theart training facilities and the new 24x7 Veterinary Services now open to the general public. Some local model train enthusiasts brought out their engines for us to ride during the day. It’s possible that these little trains had more grunt than our babies! After another busy and fun filled day it was time to head for home to dress for our farewell dinner at Nuriootpa’s Vine Inn. Tonight’s black and red theme really created a happy atmosphere. There was a wide range of amazing outfits on show and a party mood quickly overcame everyone! Our dinner was lovely and various Rally Awards were presented afterwards. Our Club was well represented at the Rally and our members received the following Awards; Best Tourer - Mark & Joanne Wellington, Best Sedan Brian & Deirdre Haywood, Best Race Car - Warren Tite. Congratulations to you all! The Rally finally drew to a close and a big thank you must go to the organisers. The Austin 7 Club SA has set the bar very high indeed … and we all look forward to more fun and camaraderie at the 2017 National Hub Rally at Toowoomba in sunny Queensland. Page 9
Sheldon also enjoyed the day. Robert and Faye didn’t race their delicate Herbie but did take him for a drive around the steep track during the lunch break. Faye was hanging on during the drive and said, “once around was enough … it was scary and steep … and that was driving slowly and not the speed of the racing drivers!
7 October 2012. The 50th Anniversary Vintage Collingrove Speed Hillclimb immediately followed our National Austin 7 Hub Rally. Some Club members took the opportunity to participate in this exciting event while others simply enjoyed being spectators. For those of us who were uninitiated with this form of motor-sport it was quite surprising to see the steepness of the hills. And talk about sharp hair-pin bends! How are our baby Austins supposed to climb such grades anyway? But climb them they did … and with surprising ability! Paul Boatwright, Ken Rolley and Warren Tite put their A7’s through their paces and were very competitive on the day. It was with some luck and good management that they all survived the event without any major problems. Spectators from our Club included Mervyn & Maureen Boatwright, Simone Christopher & Paul Stevens, Paul Pui, Bob & Judith Riches, Cliff Stockley and Robert & Faye Yarroll. Club friend Stuart Page 10
The Collingrove complex has a long history and has undergone many improvements over the years. Today it is a comfortable place for motor-sport fans to enjoy cars of every type and era compete on one of the most challenging tracks in Australia. But no matter how challenging it is … ultimately it’s all about having fun! After lunch there was a raffle for a large gift hamper of local produce, wines and treats. Well ... the lucky winner was from NSW with Maureen Boatwright holding the winning ticket. Congratulations Maureen! On the day before the Hillclimb event their was a tour of the Barossa Valley. Several members went along for a lovely morning tea at Eden Valley and onto a BBQ lunch at Moculta Cricket Ground where the local Rotary Club organised a sit-down lunch. We had the chance here to talk to other visitors and competitors in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Yet another fun weekend and Faye says, “look out for kangaroos and koalas … they really are out there!”

I have mentioned a number of times that next year “2013” is the 30th Anniversary of the Austin 7 Club NSW Inc. This is not so – the club was formed in 1984. Thing went wrong when the 10th Anniversary was celebrated and at that time the club was only 9 years old and has remained one year out ever since. What do you think, should we celebrate 29 years in 2013 or wait for 2014 to celebrate the club’s birthday in 2014?
